Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: I believe I've got joining me on the line right now.
- 0:03Speaker 1: I think that we have all been quite heartbroken actually
- 0:06Speaker 1: to see the news that had come through a little
- 0:09Speaker 1: bit earlier in the week, at the loss of a
- 0:12Speaker 1: beautiful nineteen year old girl, Kayla May is her name,
- 0:17Speaker 1: nineteen years old, and I know her family must be
- 0:20Speaker 1: feeling incredibly broken at the moment. But I believe I'm
- 0:24Speaker 1: joined on the line right now by Judy. Judy is
- 0:27Speaker 1: Taylor's mom's mum, so her grandma, and she joins me
- 0:32Speaker 1: on the line right now. Good morning to you, Judy,
- 0:36Speaker 1: Good morning Katie. Judy. Firstly, I'm so sorry for the
- 0:40Speaker 1: loss of Kayla.
- 0:44Speaker 2: Thank you so much, Katie.
- 0:46Speaker 3: We really appreciate all the love.
- 0:48Speaker 2: And thought messages and support that we've seen from so
- 0:52Speaker 2: many people across Darley. It just we can't begin to
- 0:56Speaker 2: express our gratitude.
- 0:58Speaker 3: It's just amazing. Okay, There's been so much negativity around Darwin.
- 1:04Speaker 3: There is still so much negativity around Darwin, and at
- 1:08Speaker 3: a time like this, you just realized that there are
- 1:13Speaker 3: just amazing, beautiful, kind hearted spirits out there, and we
- 1:17Speaker 3: are so grateful to those people.
- 1:21Speaker 1: Oh, Judy, I bet you are. I know you'd send
- 1:24Speaker 1: us an email and said that you you know that
- 1:27Speaker 1: you and her family really wanted to express that gratitude
- 1:32Speaker 1: and thank you know, thank everybody out there who supported
- 1:37Speaker 1: your family at what is such a difficult time.
- 1:41Speaker 2: Katie, they're still supporting us. I can't begin to explain
- 1:46Speaker 2: what it means to us. I just there are a
- 1:49Speaker 2: couple of people, not a couple of people, but our
- 1:53Speaker 2: next door neighbor. Neighbors are Brian and Amy Challon. On Monday,
- 2:00Speaker 2: after this all happened, So let me explain what happened.
- 2:08Speaker 2: Kayla was a beautiful girl, and she absolutely loved things
- 2:11Speaker 2: like sunrise, dunsets, the beach, the pool we have in
- 2:16Speaker 2: our yard because we live we're a family that all
- 2:19Speaker 2: lived together. We're fortunate enough to live together on the
- 2:22Speaker 2: same property. And she was recently diagnosed with epilepsy. So
- 2:30Speaker 2: earlier this year she was diagnosed with epilepsy, and she
- 2:36Speaker 2: was told, you know, not to swim in the pool.
- 2:37Speaker 2: But of course, how do you deny someone their freedom
- 2:40Speaker 2: when they love something so much? So on Monday, at
- 2:44Speaker 2: some stage she got her bowl of berries and her
- 2:46Speaker 2: water and her cap as she always does, and put
- 2:49Speaker 2: the bowl of berries by the pool and went and
- 2:51Speaker 2: sat in the pool. And then later in the afternoon
- 2:56Speaker 2: when her mum just got home from work, she was
- 3:00Speaker 2: talking on the phone to her auntie down south, and
- 3:05Speaker 2: their youngest brother, Mali, said, I'm going for a swim. Mom,
- 3:09Speaker 2: I've been riding my bike or down I'm going for
- 3:11Speaker 2: a swim. And he came around the corner to the
- 3:15Speaker 2: pool and he saw Kayla floating face down in the pool,
- 3:20Speaker 2: and Key just jumped in the pool and grabbed her.
- 3:23Speaker 2: Screen for his mother. She said it was the most
- 3:25Speaker 2: blood curdling scream she's ever heard. And then of course
- 3:28Speaker 2: they had the horrible task of trying to pull her
- 3:31Speaker 2: out of the water and trying to revive her, and
- 3:35Speaker 2: that's just going to be ed in their minds forever. Anyway,
- 3:40Speaker 2: they got her out and they tried to revive her
- 3:44Speaker 2: and they just couldn't. The police in the ambulance people,
- 3:48Speaker 2: oh my god, we had so many of them here,
- 3:50Speaker 2: and they were so beautiful. Oh my god, they were
- 3:53Speaker 2: so beautiful, so honorable and respectful, and you could actually
- 3:58Speaker 2: feel their love and their sorrow was amazing. And Tara's
- 4:02Speaker 2: husband works at MacArthur River Mine, so we were trying
- 4:06Speaker 2: to get him home because we wanted him to see
- 4:08Speaker 2: Kaylor before they took her away, and unfortunately there was
- 4:14Speaker 2: no charters available. One of the police officers was trying
- 4:17Speaker 2: everything she could. She had contacts and she tried everything.
- 4:20Speaker 2: It was just amazing. And in the end we had
- 4:26Speaker 2: Troy Bond from TBC TV Constructions trying to get charters
- 4:33Speaker 2: him and his wife, Erica. We had Trishan McGregor and
- 4:38Speaker 2: trying to help get charters. My grandson works out at
- 4:42Speaker 2: the station out of town. She drove out of town
- 4:45Speaker 2: to go and pick him up get him home as
- 4:48Speaker 2: quick as she could.
- 4:50Speaker 4: See.
- 4:50Speaker 2: Kaylor just wasn't to be and we were so upset
- 4:56Speaker 2: that her dad and brother couldn't be here. Anyway, our
- 5:01Speaker 2: next door neighbor messaged me and he said because he
- 5:04Speaker 2: works out there too, and he said I can go
- 5:07Speaker 2: out there and get him if you want. And I said, oh,
- 5:10Speaker 2: we're waiting for a charter. We were still waiting for
- 5:12Speaker 2: word at that stage, and they'd been over here to
- 5:17Speaker 2: see us before that, and I'd said, you know, we're
- 5:21Speaker 2: waiting for a child. Well, in the meantime, he'd messaged
- 5:23Speaker 2: her dad and said, I'll come and get you if
- 5:25Speaker 2: you want to, and my daughter messaged. He messaged his wife.
- 5:30Speaker 4: My daughter.
- 5:32Speaker 2: And said, what do I do? But and she said,
- 5:34Speaker 2: if he's offering to take it? But and he actually
- 5:40Speaker 2: got in his car and he drove out to pick
- 5:44Speaker 2: James up and he got him home here at five
- 5:48Speaker 2: o'clock the next morning, so we all saw the sun
- 5:52Speaker 2: rise together.
- 5:57Speaker 4: It was just such an amazing thing to do. I
- 6:01Speaker 4: don't know how we can ever repay them, because if
- 6:03Speaker 4: James had caught the charter back, waited for a chart
- 6:07Speaker 4: and he still wouldn't have been home until lunchtime or something.
- 6:10Speaker 4: So we are forever grateful to those people that have
- 6:14Speaker 4: helped it, and the people that have continued to support
- 6:17Speaker 4: us with love and just and cash donation and.
- 6:24Speaker 2: Oh, Judy, amazing people are so beautiful and I just
- 6:32Speaker 2: can't thank everyone enough. And you know who you are,
- 6:35Speaker 2: and bless every single one of you, Judy.
- 6:39Speaker 1: I think in life, I firmly believe that the good
- 6:44Speaker 1: people are the ones who are there for you when
- 6:46Speaker 1: you need it the most. And it sounds to me
- 6:49Speaker 1: like your family's definitely got that. I feel absolutely heartbroken
- 6:53Speaker 1: for you and your family has what you've gone through.
- 6:56Speaker 1: This week, Judy, can you tell me a little bit
- 6:59Speaker 1: about beautiful Kayla. It sounds like she is an incredible
- 7:04Speaker 1: young woman.
- 7:05Speaker 2: Can I read something?
- 7:08Speaker 4: I can get to it?
- 7:09Speaker 2: And actually described her to a fee She was a
- 7:13Speaker 2: very spiritual young girl. He just loved nature. She she
- 7:23Speaker 2: was just a beautiful soul. She really was. And you know,
- 7:28Speaker 2: I know there are girls around town that have had
- 7:30Speaker 2: their good fights with her and tried to cause problems.
- 7:34Speaker 2: And that's the one thing I want to say. Come on, girls,
- 7:38Speaker 2: up to your game. Love one another and support each other. Yeah,
- 7:41Speaker 2: knocking each other down. You know, there's just too much
- 7:45Speaker 2: of it, and it's just not worth it. It's not worth it.
- 7:53Speaker 1: No, it's really not. Oh, Judy, I I really thank you.
- 7:59Speaker 1: Please do Can I read this name? I certainly can.
- 8:03Speaker 2: Okay, here we.
- 8:05Speaker 4: Go, dear human, you've got it all backward.
- 8:10Speaker 2: You didn't come here to master unconditional love. That's where
- 8:13Speaker 2: you came from and it's where you return. You came
- 8:17Speaker 2: here to learn personal love, universal love, messy love, sweaty
- 8:22Speaker 2: love and crazy broken love, whole love and views with
- 8:25Speaker 2: divinity and live through the grace of stumbling demonstrated through
- 8:30Speaker 2: the beauty of messing up often. You didn't come here
- 8:33Speaker 2: to be perfect, you already are. You came here to
- 8:36Speaker 2: be gorgeously human, flawed and fabulous, and then to rise
- 8:40Speaker 2: again into remembering. Love and truth doesn't need any other adjectives.
- 8:46Speaker 2: It doesn't require modifiers, doesn't require the condition of perfection.
- 8:51Speaker 2: It only asks that you show up and you do
- 8:53Speaker 2: your best, and that you stay present and you feel fully,
- 8:57Speaker 2: that you shine and fly and laugh and cry and
- 9:00Speaker 2: hurt and heal and fall and get up again and
- 9:03Speaker 2: play and work and live and die as you. It's
- 9:07Speaker 2: enough and it's plenty. And that describes my girl pulity.
- 9:14Speaker 2: She was unconditional love. She was, she would the universe,
- 9:20Speaker 2: and she's gone back there.
- 9:24Speaker 1: Judy, that's their beautiful words. And what you have said
- 9:27Speaker 1: this morning is absolutely beautiful. The you know, the gratitude
- 9:32Speaker 1: that you have for the community. I reckon You've got
- 9:35Speaker 1: all of Darwin sitting and listening to you this morning
- 9:38Speaker 1: and feeling very heartbroken, but also thinking, what a woman,
- 9:42Speaker 1: what strength for your family to be able to come
- 9:45Speaker 1: out this morning and speak about your beautiful granddaughter. Judy,
- 9:51Speaker 1: thank you so much for having a chat with us
- 9:53Speaker 1: this morning, but thank you as well for just reminding
- 9:56Speaker 1: us how wonderful so many people in the Northern Territory
- 10:01Speaker 1: do you know, Kay, it's not.
- 10:02Speaker 2: The color of your skin, it's not anything, it's not
- 10:06Speaker 2: where you came from, it's nothing. We're all the same,
- 10:09Speaker 2: we all believe the same, we all have heart. That
- 10:12Speaker 2: our hearts can be broken at any given time. We've
- 10:15Speaker 2: got to just support each other and love each other
- 10:18Speaker 2: and get on with our lives. Yeah, stop all the crap.
- 10:23Speaker 1: Judy, thank you so much for ringing this morning and
- 10:27Speaker 1: speaking to us. Please pass on my love and care
- 10:31Speaker 1: to all of your family at what is I can't
- 10:35Speaker 1: even imagine how difficult a time it is for you
- 10:37Speaker 1: at the moment and your family, But please pass on
- 10:40Speaker 1: our love and let them know that the whole of
- 10:44Speaker 1: the Northern Territory is behind you. Guys.
- 10:47Speaker 2: Thank you much, respect and thank you so much to
- 10:51Speaker 2: everyone who has sent messages supported us, continue to support us.
- 10:56Speaker 2: The hard times for coming, but we'll get through it
- 11:00Speaker 2: each other, and I know there's a lot of love
- 11:01Speaker 2: out there for this girl. Thank you so much.
- 11:04Speaker 1: Thank you, Judy. Yeah, thank you you too, thanks so much.
- 11:12Speaker 1: Oh goodness me, how lovely of Judy to ring through
- 11:18Speaker 1: and be thinking of other people at this point of
- 11:20Speaker 1: time as well. Despite that absolute heartache that their little
- 11:25Speaker 1: family is going through, it sounds it actually sounds like
- 11:27Speaker 1: they're a beautiful, big family that all live on the
- 11:30Speaker 1: property together and sound like a tremendous family. My heart
- 11:36Speaker 1: breaks for them, and and hearing more about Kaylor is
- 11:41Speaker 1: amazing as well. Kayla May and I know that there
- 11:44Speaker 1: have been so many people online to show their support
- 11:47Speaker 1: for that family, and also so many people reaching out
- 11:51Speaker 1: as you've just heard there from Judy
