- 2:00Speaker 5: in this with a bang, the big one. Yeah, this
- 2:04Speaker 5: is this is one that I'm excited for. I know
- 2:06Speaker 5: Troy is definitely excited for Inky Inky Johnson. If you're
- 2:09Speaker 5: not familiar, you've been under the rock for the last
- 2:11Speaker 5: five years, ten years, so I don't even call them
- 2:14Speaker 5: motivational speaker. Inspirational speaker for sure, father, family man, best
- 2:22Speaker 5: selling author, philanthropists, entrepreneur, the list goes on. And this
- 2:29Speaker 5: is gonna be a dope conversation because we's never really
- 2:32Speaker 5: have had a detailed conversation with anybody that was a motivational,
- 2:37Speaker 5: inspirational public speaker on a really larger scale. So a
- 2:42Speaker 5: for me, it's always dope to actually get the backstories
- 2:45Speaker 5: and learn the inner workings of it. But then also
- 2:47Speaker 5: from a technical standpoint, learning the business and learning about
- 2:49Speaker 5: you know, putting yourself out there a lot of people.
- 2:52Speaker 5: I feel like everybody has a story, Like Ashcat says,
- 2:54Speaker 5: everybody has a story. Everybody should write a book or
- 2:57Speaker 5: everybody should because you never know who could relate to you,
- 3:01Speaker 5: who could help, And just like you're watching somebody on TV,
- 3:05Speaker 5: somebody potentially could be watching you on TV on the
- 3:07Speaker 5: flip side. So this is a conversation that you know
- 3:10Speaker 5: is going to cross a variety of different feels and factors.
- 3:14Speaker 5: I'm sure. So, first and foremost, thank you for joining us, brother,
- 3:17Speaker 5: appreciate it.
- 3:17Speaker 3: That it's a pleasure.
- 3:18Speaker 7: Man.
- 3:19Speaker 1: I got great respect, admiration for both of you brothers, man,
- 3:22Speaker 1: and what you do so great, appreciate it.
- 3:24Speaker 5: Thank you, brother, Thank you. All right, So let's let's
- 3:27Speaker 5: jump right into it. You know, people might have seen
- 3:28Speaker 5: your clips on Instagram, they might have seen you on YouTube,
- 3:32Speaker 5: they might have you know, heard you for a variety
- 3:35Speaker 5: of different outlets, but they might not fully know like
- 3:39Speaker 5: how you got to this point, right, So can we
- 3:42Speaker 5: can we go a little bit about the backstory. I
- 3:43Speaker 5: know you was an athlete, and you know your life
- 3:47Speaker 5: obviously changed drastically, So can you talk about that a
- 3:51Speaker 5: little bit?
- 3:52Speaker 1: Absolutely, man, you know, former collegiate athlete. You know my
- 3:56Speaker 1: whole life, you know, I wanted to make it to
- 3:59Speaker 1: the league. You know, I grew up here in Atlanta,
- 4:03Speaker 1: corner of Kirkwood six six, you.
- 4:08Speaker 3: Know the cats.
- 4:10Speaker 1: I grew up on that side, you know, product of
- 4:13Speaker 1: Atlanta Public school system. And my mom had me at
- 4:17Speaker 1: sixteen and she took me back to one twenty five Warren,
- 4:20Speaker 1: two bedroom home, fourteen people and I sleep on the floor,
- 4:24Speaker 1: you know, on pallets like no cats in the inner city.
- 4:27Speaker 1: Some of the best times in my life. But I
- 4:29Speaker 1: was fortunate because I got to see both sides of it.
- 4:32Speaker 1: You know, you see the side to where a cat
- 4:33Speaker 1: out in the street, they doing what they're doing, and
- 4:36Speaker 1: then you see the side when people get up and
- 4:37Speaker 1: go to work every day. But me watching my mom
- 4:40Speaker 1: and so I wanted to make it to the NFL
- 4:43Speaker 1: because I wanted to give my family a better way
- 4:45Speaker 1: of life. And I was the first one in my
- 4:47Speaker 1: family to go to college play ball. In my junior
- 4:50Speaker 1: year man, I was a projected first round draft pick
- 4:53Speaker 1: as a corner.
- 4:54Speaker 3: I went out to make a tackle.
- 4:56Speaker 1: And almost lost my life when it ended up changing
- 4:59Speaker 1: my life and my dream. God, that day September ninety,
- 5:03Speaker 1: two thousand and six, you know, it became one of
- 5:05Speaker 1: the greatest days of my life, you know, outside of
- 5:07Speaker 1: marrying my wife and having my two children.
- 5:10Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean that's a lot.
- 5:13Speaker 3: I mean yeah.
- 5:13Speaker 4: I mean, even you're saying that's one of the best
- 5:15Speaker 4: days of your life, most people would see it. It's like, Yo,
- 5:17Speaker 4: that's probably the most drastic day of my life because
- 5:21Speaker 4: my dreams have now been deferred and potentially ended in
- 5:24Speaker 4: that time. September sixth, what's the process of it. You're like,
- 5:28Speaker 4: all right, this is all over, or you're like, know, what.
- 5:30Speaker 4: I'm still here, I'm still brieving, I can still be winning.
- 5:33Speaker 1: Yeah, it was surreal man at first, just being honest, man,
- 5:37Speaker 1: total transparency. I didn't think I could lose it that quick,
- 5:41Speaker 1: you know, because I had been working. It's like if
- 5:43Speaker 1: you work for something from the time you seven to
- 5:46Speaker 1: twenty and you give everything you got to it, like
- 5:49Speaker 1: you don't think you can lose it with an injury, right,
- 5:51Speaker 1: Like I never thought I could go out one day
- 5:53Speaker 1: and make a tackle. Even though you hear about it,
- 5:56Speaker 1: you don't think it can happen to you. It's like
- 5:57Speaker 1: when you tell a young cat, hey, man, do this, dude,
- 6:00Speaker 1: you know, say for rainy days, when a cat tell
- 6:02Speaker 1: somebody that cats be like, yeah, I hear you, but
- 6:04Speaker 1: you know it's not gonna happen to me. So when
- 6:06Speaker 1: it happened, I was disappointed. But you know, I knew
- 6:10Speaker 1: I wasn't quitting. I knew I wasn't giving up right,
- 6:13Speaker 1: and I didn't have anything to go back to. And
- 6:16Speaker 1: so I tell people all the time like you never
- 6:18Speaker 1: know how strong you are until being strong is the
- 6:20Speaker 1: only choice you have. And in that moment of adversity,
- 6:24Speaker 1: I felt like being strong was the only choice I had,
- 6:26Speaker 1: Like I was coming from a two bedroom home with
- 6:28Speaker 1: fourteen people, Like what, I'm gonna just go back to
- 6:31Speaker 1: the porch, you know what I'm saying, sleep on the floor.
- 6:33Speaker 1: And so it was about processing it and figuring out
- 6:36Speaker 1: a way to use it.
- 6:38Speaker 5: So in that moment or at what point do you
- 6:41Speaker 5: say okay, because I'm sure that there has to be
- 6:43Speaker 5: some level of like you know, depression that kicks in
- 6:46Speaker 5: and then it's like, all right, you know what, not
- 6:49Speaker 5: only am I gonna get past this, but I'm actually
- 6:51Speaker 5: gonna inspire other people by telling my story and you know,
- 6:56Speaker 5: just giving the game on it. So at what point
- 6:59Speaker 5: do you realize it's like the way for you is
- 7:02Speaker 5: actually public speaking and sharing your story.
- 7:06Speaker 1: Yeah, so that was that was a process. And so
- 7:09Speaker 1: the nature of my injury, the reason I almost lost
- 7:13Speaker 1: my life. I ruptured my seedlavian artery in my chest
- 7:16Speaker 1: and so when they ran the test, they noticed I
- 7:18Speaker 1: was bleeding internally.
- 7:19Speaker 5: What is that? What's what's that?
- 7:21Speaker 1: It's like the main artery in your chest, like with
- 7:23Speaker 1: your heart. Yeah, I don't, I just know that you
- 7:25Speaker 1: said that the main one and uh, just the main
- 7:29Speaker 1: artery and I was bleeding right internally.
- 7:32Speaker 3: But at the time and I'm bleeding internally, I'm sitting
- 7:35Speaker 3: here and.
- 7:35Speaker 1: I'm talking like we talked right in a room, talking
- 7:38Speaker 1: to my mom, chilling, and the doctor rushes in and
- 7:42Speaker 1: my man is like, we got to rush you back
- 7:44Speaker 1: to surgery right now.
- 7:44Speaker 3: You're bleeding internally. You're about to die.
- 7:47Speaker 1: And I'm like, I'm thinking he's joking, and he's like, nah,
- 7:50Speaker 1: you you're bleeding internally. We got to take the main
- 7:52Speaker 1: vein out of your left leg and plug it into
- 7:54Speaker 1: your chest.
- 7:55Speaker 3: And the next morning I wake up.
- 7:56Speaker 1: I got six cuts down my left eye, one cut
- 7:59Speaker 1: across the left side of the neck, one of course,
- 8:00Speaker 1: the right twice do my right ribs, cut out my
- 8:03Speaker 1: right peck, bottom of my arm pit to the bottom
- 8:05Speaker 1: of my hand, three hundred and fifty staples in my body.
- 8:08Speaker 1: The advantaged me from my neck to my knees because
- 8:10Speaker 1: when they went in to repair the artery, I had
- 8:12Speaker 1: torn the nerves from my spine that controls my shoulder,
- 8:15Speaker 1: my arm, my hands, and my fingers, and so at
- 8:18Speaker 1: that point they was like it's over, and I would
- 8:21Speaker 1: go out and do community service. Even after I would
- 8:24Speaker 1: do rehab and things of that nature because I needed
- 8:27Speaker 1: something to shift my mindset right and coming up, a
- 8:30Speaker 1: lot of people had helped me and my family. And
- 8:32Speaker 1: so when I would go into these environments to answer
- 8:35Speaker 1: your question about speaking, I would go in and a
- 8:38Speaker 1: cat like you could see my arm right you could
- 8:40Speaker 1: see the atrophy, you could see right off, like something
- 8:43Speaker 1: happened to him, you know what I'm saying. So people
- 8:45Speaker 1: would be saying, as we would be doing habitat for
- 8:47Speaker 1: Humanity Community Service, cats had just come over and be like,
- 8:50Speaker 1: what happened, Like what happened to your arm? And I'd
- 8:52Speaker 1: just be like, I have football injury. Cats are like, nah,
- 8:55Speaker 1: what happened? Like tell me what happened? And I would
- 8:57Speaker 1: just be talking to him nothing, trying to speak, just
- 9:00Speaker 1: informal and we would get done and it would be
- 9:03Speaker 1: a crowd of cats and we would walk off and
- 9:05Speaker 1: cats would be like you might need to speak, and
- 9:08Speaker 1: I was like, no, I'm good, Like I'm not trying
- 9:10Speaker 1: to speak like I'm good. I need a job at
- 9:13Speaker 1: the time because I'm like, I don't want to grow
- 9:15Speaker 1: up like I grew up, and I want to take
- 9:17Speaker 1: care of my family right when I have one. And
- 9:20Speaker 1: so from that point, man I was searching for purpose.
- 9:23Speaker 1: You know, it wasn't even about speaking at the time.
- 9:25Speaker 1: I needed purpose, I needed fulfillment. I needed meaning for
- 9:28Speaker 1: my life because at one point in an athlete, it
- 9:31Speaker 1: brought me that. But when people started talking about it,
- 9:34Speaker 1: that was the first time my will started turning about
- 9:37Speaker 1: and maybe I can use what happened to me to
- 9:40Speaker 1: add value to someone's life.
- 9:42Speaker 4: Yeah, so I'm imagining like at a certain point, you're like,
- 9:45Speaker 4: I'm just I'm tired of talking about this.
- 9:47Speaker 6: I'm living it. And that rehab process obviously was I
- 9:51Speaker 6: can imagine grueling.
- 9:53Speaker 4: But you said you wanted to go back into your community, right,
- 9:56Speaker 4: So you have the injury, you go through the rehab process,
- 9:58Speaker 4: you're back in Kirkwood, and you're looking for employment. So
- 10:02Speaker 4: you go back to the Direct Center. What was that
- 10:04Speaker 4: like when you got back there?
- 10:06Speaker 3: Man? It was it was wild.
- 10:08Speaker 1: And so the way I got back to Atlanta, I
- 10:11Speaker 1: was pursuing a career to be a coach, and so
- 10:13Speaker 1: I had been a graduate assistant for a few years
- 10:16Speaker 1: and I thought I was going to become a defensive
- 10:18Speaker 1: backs coach, a position I played. And my wife caused
- 10:21Speaker 1: me one day and I'm in the office doing cut
- 10:23Speaker 1: ups on the computer, and she was like, I got
- 10:26Speaker 1: something to tell you. I'm like what you got and
- 10:28Speaker 1: she was like, I'm pregnant. I was like, you pregnant?
- 10:31Speaker 1: Like I think I might have said, like how that happened?
- 10:35Speaker 3: Shot?
- 10:35Speaker 6: Gratulation?
- 10:37Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying at the time, I'm not
- 10:39Speaker 1: making no money, you know what I'm saying, Like I'm
- 10:41Speaker 1: a graduate assistant Tennessee, Like I'm not making no money.
- 10:46Speaker 1: Like they giving cats like cards to go to the mall,
- 10:50Speaker 1: signing cards and stuff like that, Like I'm not making
- 10:52Speaker 1: no money. So I'm like I might have said something
- 10:54Speaker 1: like i'd happened or something like that shot, and she like,
- 10:57Speaker 1: how didn't happen?
- 10:58Speaker 3: Like you know how? And so I went in and
- 11:01Speaker 3: talked to the coach.
- 11:02Speaker 1: I gathered myself and I told him the situation, and
- 11:05Speaker 1: I was like, I don't want to just leave.
- 11:07Speaker 3: I want to handle the situation right.
- 11:09Speaker 1: And he was like, now, if you feel that conviction,
- 11:11Speaker 1: you go there to Atlanta, man, and you be there
- 11:13Speaker 1: for your family. Because I was like, I don't want
- 11:14Speaker 1: my kids to grow up similar to how I grew up.
- 11:17Speaker 1: And so at that point I made the call to
- 11:19Speaker 1: the guy that worked at the rec Center City of
- 11:20Speaker 1: Atlanta Parks and Wreck where I grew up, and I
- 11:23Speaker 1: was like, man, I need a gig and he was like,
- 11:25Speaker 1: think you can come Like yesterday I got you. And
- 11:28Speaker 1: so when I moved back, I called him and he
- 11:31Speaker 1: had left and I went up to the rec center
- 11:33Speaker 1: and I told him the situation and they was like,
- 11:36Speaker 1: you overqualified. And I was like, what's that? Like what
- 11:38Speaker 1: you mean, Oh? I just want to work with kids
- 11:40Speaker 1: and create leadership curriculums and they was like, nah, we
- 11:43Speaker 1: can't do it. And at that point, I'm two blocks
- 11:46Speaker 1: away from where I grew up, and I was confused,
- 11:49Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying, Like I was. To be honest,
- 11:52Speaker 1: I was like, God, like, I know, you didn't bring
- 11:54Speaker 1: me from Kirkwood, a two beton home, fourteen people, first
- 11:57Speaker 1: woman in my family to graduate college and even go
- 11:59Speaker 1: to college and go through all of that, get that
- 12:02Speaker 1: close to making my dreams of going to the NFL
- 12:04Speaker 1: come true and bring me right back two blocks away
- 12:07Speaker 1: from where I grew up in my wife's grandmother's home
- 12:10Speaker 1: with nothing, you know what I'm saying, Like, I'm like,
- 12:12Speaker 1: I can't I can't understand that and so at that point,
- 12:17Speaker 1: that's when the faith journey started of what I'm doing now?
- 12:20Speaker 5: And so your first speaking engage me. You told me
- 12:22Speaker 5: it was at a barn.
- 12:24Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 12:24Speaker 5: Man, Can you talk about that?
- 12:26Speaker 6: Yeah? Man.
- 12:27Speaker 1: So so when I first decided like to do it,
- 12:32Speaker 1: I'll never forget. I called my boys Rod Mayo, you know,
- 12:36Speaker 1: he's linebackers coach for the Patriots now, and I was like, man,
- 12:40Speaker 1: I need fulfillming, I need purpose and he was like,
- 12:42Speaker 1: you need to speak. And I talked to my wife
- 12:45Speaker 1: about it, and I prayed.
- 12:47Speaker 3: Bro. It was a simple prayer. What I'm saying, I
- 12:50Speaker 3: don't know preachy stuff.
- 12:51Speaker 1: I just prayed, like like, I don't know what you
- 12:53Speaker 1: want me to do, right, I thought it was this.
- 12:56Speaker 1: It's not that I thought it was this. It's not
- 12:58Speaker 1: that I got yield. I give up, man, whatever it
- 13:02Speaker 1: is you want me to do. People are saying speak,
- 13:04Speaker 1: if it speak, it feels right, I'll be obedient, right,
- 13:07Speaker 1: And it says obedience is better than sacrifice. But as people,
- 13:11Speaker 1: what do we do when we go on a journey
- 13:12Speaker 1: or pursuit of something. We judge the level of sacrifice
- 13:15Speaker 1: without first being obedient? Right, what is it gonna cost me, Like,
- 13:18Speaker 1: what is this gonna do to me? What do I
- 13:20Speaker 1: have to give up? Why do I gotta do this?
- 13:22Speaker 1: So I said, I just want to be obedient whatever
- 13:24Speaker 1: opportunities come. It ain't about money, it ain't about structure.
- 13:27Speaker 1: At this point, I just want to be obedient to
- 13:29Speaker 1: what I feel like I'm being called to do with
- 13:31Speaker 1: my life. And so at that point, you know, I
- 13:34Speaker 1: get an opportunity from Mississippi and I go and it's
- 13:37Speaker 1: like a fifteen hour round trip driving and I go
- 13:40Speaker 1: and I speak like when I show up, I call
- 13:44Speaker 1: my wife and I'm like, man, like I'm in the
- 13:47Speaker 1: back woods. I'm like, you might need to call my color,
- 13:51Speaker 1: you know, like, oh, this thing don't look right.
- 13:54Speaker 3: I go back there. They got the music going, the
- 13:56Speaker 3: lights going.
- 13:57Speaker 1: I speak and keep in mind like when I talk
- 14:00Speaker 1: my man, I just told him I'll come like I
- 14:02Speaker 1: ain't say hey, man, like, let's let me sit over
- 14:04Speaker 1: my contract, get with my assistant, say none of that.
- 14:07Speaker 3: I didn't have any of that. I spoke.
- 14:09Speaker 1: And after I come off stage and my man it's like,
- 14:11Speaker 1: thank you so much. And he gave me a coffee mug,
- 14:14Speaker 1: and so I get the coffee mug I drive back,
- 14:17Speaker 1: get back like three am and my wife was waiting
- 14:19Speaker 1: up for me. She hyped, you know what I'm saying,
- 14:21Speaker 1: this is my first gig. She's like, how did it go?
- 14:24Speaker 1: It went great? And she was like what you get
- 14:26Speaker 1: what they give you? I was like, they gave me
- 14:28Speaker 1: this coffee mug and she was like, you sure this
- 14:31Speaker 1: is what you're supposed to be doing. I was like, yeah,
- 14:34Speaker 1: it feels right. I think this is what I'm supposed
- 14:36Speaker 1: to be doing. And I credit her for this because
- 14:40Speaker 1: this could have altered my purpose if she would have
- 14:42Speaker 1: been like, nah, I go do something else.
- 14:45Speaker 3: But she was like, all right, cool, let's do it.
- 14:47Speaker 1: Like if you feel like this is what you're supposed
- 14:49Speaker 1: to do, rock with you.
- 14:52Speaker 5: So from there, how do you scale that into a business? Like,
- 14:57Speaker 5: all right, you realize this is your purpose, you realize
- 15:01Speaker 5: that you have a gift. I'm sure you're probably you know,
- 15:04Speaker 5: working on in and getting better at it. But at
- 15:08Speaker 5: what point do you say, Okay, this is what I'm
- 15:10Speaker 5: gonna do for a living, and this is going to
- 15:12Speaker 5: become my livelihood, this is going to become a business.
- 15:14Speaker 3: Absolutely.
- 15:15Speaker 1: So at that point when I decided that, I had
- 15:19Speaker 1: confirmation to speak like this is what I was supposed
- 15:22Speaker 1: to be doing.
- 15:23Speaker 3: At that point.
- 15:24Speaker 1: The money was the last thing I worried about because
- 15:26Speaker 1: I didn't want it to jay my process, right, And
- 15:29Speaker 1: so the thing that I focused on the most was
- 15:31Speaker 1: how can I become the most diverse in my communication
- 15:34Speaker 1: in my gift right? And so immediately I started going
- 15:38Speaker 1: to all type of speaking engagements.
- 15:40Speaker 3: Right.
- 15:40Speaker 1: I didn't pigeonhole myself and say, oh, I'm a former athlete,
- 15:43Speaker 1: I just want to speak to athletes. Oh, I love kids,
- 15:46Speaker 1: I just want to talk to kids. Nope, Like I'm
- 15:48Speaker 1: gonna go to the birthday party. Cats twelve thirteen and
- 15:52Speaker 1: the sixth of them, and they hit me like can
- 15:54Speaker 1: you come speak at my kids' birthday party? I'm like bat,
- 15:57Speaker 1: And can you come to the country club? We got
- 16:00Speaker 1: elderly women seventy years old. I'm like, bad, it's ten
- 16:03Speaker 1: of them, And can you come and speak to these
- 16:06Speaker 1: c suitet cats? And can you come and speak to
- 16:09Speaker 1: these athletes? And I'll never forget a cat said to
- 16:11Speaker 1: me like, man, why do I see you in all
- 16:14Speaker 1: these different environments? Like you speaking of elderly ladies, kids, athletes, corporate,
- 16:19Speaker 1: Like why are you going all over the place. Why
- 16:21Speaker 1: do you just speak to one dynamic, one group like athletes,
- 16:24Speaker 1: that's your element? And I was like, no, I said,
- 16:27Speaker 1: because I want to become diverse.
- 16:29Speaker 3: I said.
- 16:29Speaker 1: I didn't know a lot at that moment about speaking,
- 16:32Speaker 1: but I knew I couldn't speak to everybody the same.
- 16:34Speaker 1: And I knew the more diverse I was in my communication,
- 16:37Speaker 1: the more opportunities I would get. And so I looked
- 16:40Speaker 1: at the landscape of it and said, what's going to
- 16:42Speaker 1: work for me and my family? Where can I go
- 16:44Speaker 1: and speak and get right back home to my son's
- 16:46Speaker 1: baseball game. Where can I go and speak and get
- 16:49Speaker 1: right back home to my daughter's recital?
- 16:50Speaker 3: Okay, corporate would allow me to do that.
- 16:52Speaker 1: And so every environment I go into, how can I
- 16:55Speaker 1: control the narrative with my content? When I speak and
- 16:58Speaker 1: when I put it out on social media, put it
- 17:00Speaker 1: out on YouTube, when I put it online. The narrative
- 17:03Speaker 1: that I'm trying to create is a narrative of even
- 17:05Speaker 1: if I'm speaking to some elderly ladies, even if I'm
- 17:08Speaker 1: speaking to kids, a corporate group can look at this
- 17:11Speaker 1: content and say, man, that's great. We can apply that
- 17:14Speaker 1: to our organization. And I knew the pay scale in
- 17:17Speaker 1: corporate was a lot different, and so everybody else was
- 17:21Speaker 1: a byproduct in terms of what I was trying to
- 17:23Speaker 1: get to. And for most cats, they won't take the byproduct.
- 17:27Speaker 1: They'll just say I want to speak the corporate and
- 17:28Speaker 1: they'll go and they're crash and they're burned. And so
- 17:31Speaker 1: I'm going to go with everybody else and use them
- 17:33Speaker 1: as the byproduct to the goal that I'm really trying
- 17:35Speaker 1: to get to in a pay scale that I'm really
- 17:37Speaker 1: trying to get to while controlling the narrative at the
- 17:39Speaker 1: same time and perfecting my craft and my processes.
- 17:43Speaker 4: That was a lot, man, that was a lot because
- 17:45Speaker 4: I heard family balancing there. Absolutely, I heard the practice
- 17:48Speaker 4: and the word. Man, So while you were saying that,
- 17:50Speaker 4: I'm like, yo, I know you studied sports psychology in school. Absolutely,
- 17:54Speaker 4: public speaking wasn't your thing and communication was it, so
- 17:57Speaker 4: that the practice made you the expert at it. The
- 18:01Speaker 4: different diverse communities, that's what made you the expert.
- 18:04Speaker 1: Yeah, man, learning that and just understanding everything I wanted
- 18:08Speaker 1: to understand everything that revolved around communication, right, And so
- 18:12Speaker 1: for most cats they'll look at me and say, like
- 18:15Speaker 1: the world like I never label myself motivational speaker, like
- 18:19Speaker 1: that's never came out of my mouth, not one time,
- 18:21Speaker 1: And so the world would say motivational because when I speak,
- 18:24Speaker 1: I'm passionate about what I do.
- 18:26Speaker 3: I love what I do.
- 18:27Speaker 1: But at the core of it, I'm just a servant,
- 18:29Speaker 1: Like at the core of what we do, Like when
- 18:31Speaker 1: I look at business in the landscape of business, at
- 18:34Speaker 1: the core of it, like we're all in the same business,
- 18:36Speaker 1: Like we just want to make an impact, we want
- 18:37Speaker 1: to add value, and we want to turn a profit.
- 18:40Speaker 3: Right, But the way I look at what I do,
- 18:42Speaker 3: I'm a servant.
- 18:43Speaker 1: And so if I want to understand everything that revolves
- 18:45Speaker 1: around communication, I have to study communication. So when we
- 18:49Speaker 1: step on the stage, and you got all these years
- 18:51Speaker 1: of experience behind your name and what you do. You've
- 18:54Speaker 1: been in corporate you work for Bank of America, or
- 18:57Speaker 1: you work for this insurance company. And now I'm in
- 18:59Speaker 1: a ro and I'm speaking to five hundred insurance agents,
- 19:03Speaker 1: and you're going before me, and you got the experience.
- 19:05Speaker 3: And then they see me in the cut and they
- 19:07Speaker 3: see me dress.
- 19:08Speaker 1: However, I'm dressed with my collar writing my jeans, and
- 19:11Speaker 1: they looking at me like what my man got to
- 19:13Speaker 1: say to us, Like what he's finna come up here
- 19:16Speaker 1: and say, Like, I get him, he worked in the business.
- 19:20Speaker 1: I get him speaking to us. Well, what's this young cat,
- 19:23Speaker 1: Let's be real about it. What's this young African American?
- 19:25Speaker 1: What's this young black cat got to say? The five
- 19:28Speaker 1: hundred of us that do this every single day. And so,
- 19:31Speaker 1: if I know communication, if I know the feeling that
- 19:33Speaker 1: you want your group to leave with, if I know
- 19:35Speaker 1: how to index my stories and my content, I'm an
- 19:38Speaker 1: murder my man. It ain't nothing against him. He might
- 19:41Speaker 1: be nice, but he's just getting up and he's so
- 19:43Speaker 1: cocky and arrogant. And he thinks, because I got the experience,
- 19:46Speaker 1: because I've already been in the industry, I know the
- 19:48Speaker 1: industry inside and out, I'm gonna get up and I'm
- 19:50Speaker 1: gonna do it. But we all know it's not about
- 19:53Speaker 1: what you say, is how you say it. We all
- 19:54Speaker 1: know with perspective, it's not about what you see that
- 19:57Speaker 1: matters is how you view it. We all know sometimes
- 19:59Speaker 1: it's out about the things that you say, but how
- 20:01Speaker 1: it makes the people feel that you say it too,
- 20:04Speaker 1: and how they receive it.
- 20:05Speaker 3: And so in terms of me and my messaging.
- 20:07Speaker 1: I understand communication, I understand behavior science, I understand sports psychology,
- 20:12Speaker 1: and so you might look at me and think, oh,
- 20:14Speaker 1: I'm speaking. I did this when I was younger. I
- 20:17Speaker 1: would walk into a room and see a cat speak.
- 20:19Speaker 1: And we all know when you see somebody that's great
- 20:22Speaker 1: at what they do or do it for real, like
- 20:25Speaker 1: and practice it. You can walk into a room and
- 20:27Speaker 1: see them do it, and you could be like, oh,
- 20:29Speaker 1: that's easy, because they make it look easy.
- 20:32Speaker 3: You see them make the crowd laugh. It's dope. I know,
- 20:34Speaker 3: I got some jokes.
- 20:35Speaker 5: I can make it.
- 20:37Speaker 3: I know I got three in the pocket. And then
- 20:39Speaker 3: you tell your three in the pocket.
- 20:40Speaker 1: They looking at you like, uh uh, it didn't land
- 20:44Speaker 1: and playing and land, you know, and didn't land.
- 20:48Speaker 3: And then you start to understand that, oh, it's more.
- 20:51Speaker 1: It's more to it, right, And you got to understand
- 20:53Speaker 1: that process of what is that that's more to it?
- 20:56Speaker 1: That can make them laugh, that can make them ah,
- 20:59Speaker 1: that can make them you're like, oh, they can make
- 21:01Speaker 1: them give you an ovation in the middle of your presentation.
- 21:04Speaker 5: So how'd you learn that as far as because like,
- 21:06Speaker 5: you didn't go to school for that and you're right.
- 21:09Speaker 5: It's like one of those things where you watch a
- 21:11Speaker 5: comic and you like, I'm funny, Like I joke with
- 21:16Speaker 5: my friends all the time. I can get up in
- 21:18Speaker 5: front of ten thousand people. Until you get up in
- 21:20Speaker 5: front of ten people and you realize it's not just
- 21:23Speaker 5: because you're funny with your friends doesn't mean you're a comic,
- 21:26Speaker 5: and you realize that they actually work on it. They
- 21:27Speaker 5: have writers and they practice it, and they go on
- 21:29Speaker 5: the road and they test out their material like a
- 21:32Speaker 5: comic of going like small venues and test out their
- 21:35Speaker 5: material before they go to Madison Square Garden.
- 21:37Speaker 6: At the highest level.
- 21:38Speaker 5: Yeah, So how did you learn how to put material together,
- 21:44Speaker 5: how to engage the crowd, how to become a public speaker?
- 21:48Speaker 5: Because it's not easy and it's actually the biggest fear
- 21:51Speaker 5: that most people have is public speaking. So how'd you
- 21:53Speaker 5: learn that?
- 21:55Speaker 1: I incorporated like feedback forms into all of my engagement
- 22:00Speaker 1: and I still do it until this day. And so
- 22:03Speaker 1: when you think about most cats, if they think they
- 22:06Speaker 1: nice at what they do, they think they nice at
- 22:09Speaker 1: what they do, and the cat don't want feedback.
- 22:11Speaker 3: A cat will discredit feedback.
- 22:13Speaker 1: A cat don't want to hear it, and so I
- 22:15Speaker 1: wanted feedback because I knew I wasn't the best communicator.
- 22:19Speaker 1: I'm still not the best communicator by no means, but
- 22:22Speaker 1: I think I put in enough work to where if
- 22:25Speaker 1: I go give a presentation like my due diligence, my preparation,
- 22:29Speaker 1: like I'm gonna put together solid presentation because of my
- 22:32Speaker 1: research and my amount of work that I'm going to
- 22:33Speaker 1: put into it. And so with me when I would
- 22:36Speaker 1: get these feedback forms, I'll never forget. I was at
- 22:39Speaker 1: an engagement and there was multiple speakers on the bill
- 22:42Speaker 1: and it was pages of feedback, and I was speaking with,
- 22:47Speaker 1: you know, a big public figure at the time, and
- 22:51Speaker 1: as they gave us these pages of feedback, everybody kind
- 22:54Speaker 1: of grabbed they joining was like just like try to
- 22:58Speaker 1: they talk. I ain't tripping on and I'm in the
- 23:00Speaker 1: corner like I'm flipping through the.
- 23:04Speaker 3: You know what I'm saying. I'm I'm down. Then to
- 23:06Speaker 3: him like and one of one of my dudes come
- 23:09Speaker 3: to me like, man, you reading that? Like what you read?
- 23:11Speaker 3: You speaking you on the stage? You reading that? I'm like, yeah,
- 23:14Speaker 3: I'm reading it.
- 23:15Speaker 1: I'm like because they're giving me feedback on what I
- 23:18Speaker 1: need to do better and I'll never forget. I read
- 23:21Speaker 1: a comment and it showed up different ways on different pages.
- 23:24Speaker 3: People would say it differently.
- 23:26Speaker 1: And a person said, I love what he does, man,
- 23:29Speaker 1: I love how he does it right. But she said,
- 23:32Speaker 1: I can't understand sometimes if it's passion or if it's anger,
- 23:37Speaker 1: Like I can't understand some time when he gets hyped
- 23:39Speaker 1: and he gets to going right, if he's happy about
- 23:42Speaker 1: what happened to him, or if he's really mad about
- 23:44Speaker 1: it and it's covered up like. It showed up several
- 23:47Speaker 1: different ways, and so I was like, all right, cool,
- 23:49Speaker 1: this showed up. I went and I watched several of
- 23:52Speaker 1: my presentations and I cut the volume off right and
- 23:55Speaker 1: I just watched me. I watched my mannerism, watch my
- 23:59Speaker 1: body language, my fassions. I was like, they're right, you
- 24:02Speaker 1: know what I'm saying. And I went and I started
- 24:04Speaker 1: altering my presentations. I went and I started altering. But
- 24:08Speaker 1: I did that with several elements of my presentation. And
- 24:12Speaker 1: I did this. CATS thought I just did it to
- 24:15Speaker 1: master communication. I want a master communication. But I also
- 24:19Speaker 1: did this because I got a certain figure I'm trying
- 24:22Speaker 1: to get to right. I got a wife and I
- 24:24Speaker 1: got children, Like, I ain't out here just to be
- 24:26Speaker 1: playing and running with some cats to say, Oh we
- 24:29Speaker 1: speak it feel good?
- 24:30Speaker 6: We cool.
- 24:31Speaker 1: Nah, don't get it twisted. I got a wife and
- 24:33Speaker 1: I got two kids, you know what I'm saying. And
- 24:35Speaker 1: I feel as if what I'm doing, like I take
- 24:38Speaker 1: it serious, and I feel like I'm being trusted with
- 24:40Speaker 1: a level of accountability when I'm put in front of
- 24:42Speaker 1: a group to speak to them, and it's people on
- 24:45Speaker 1: the other side of the words that I would never
- 24:47Speaker 1: take for granted.
- 24:48Speaker 4: So when you take the assessment self assessment of yourself,
- 24:51Speaker 4: I'm in a vision in Is it like your wife
- 24:54Speaker 4: is sitting there listening to you, hear the speech, giving
- 24:56Speaker 4: you feedback.
- 24:56Speaker 6: Are you in the mirror? Like all right, I got
- 24:58Speaker 6: to pay my eyebrows?
- 25:00Speaker 5: Is nah?
- 25:00Speaker 6: Wait did I smile here?
- 25:02Speaker 5: Like?
- 25:02Speaker 6: What does that process look like?
- 25:05Speaker 3: So it's it's several different ways.
- 25:06Speaker 6: Man.
- 25:07Speaker 1: I'll take a story and I'll just share it, you
- 25:10Speaker 1: know what I'm saying, Because story stories telling is one
- 25:13Speaker 1: of the greatest forms of communication. Like you think about
- 25:16Speaker 1: even when we were children, think about a cat to
- 25:18Speaker 1: get a bedtime story.
- 25:19Speaker 3: You know what I'm saying.
- 25:20Speaker 1: You think about when you sit with your elders, cat
- 25:22Speaker 1: to sit around and tell you stories for days and
- 25:24Speaker 1: you'll love it.
- 25:25Speaker 6: Right.
- 25:25Speaker 1: You think about when a cat want to get something across,
- 25:27Speaker 1: most of the time they'll put it in story form.
- 25:30Speaker 1: And so for me, I'll sit there, man, and I'll
- 25:32Speaker 1: practice different ways to say a story. I practice different
- 25:35Speaker 1: ways to say things right, and so I'll just sit
- 25:38Speaker 1: there and practice it. I'll bring somebody in and practice it, but.
- 25:42Speaker 6: No, I won't.
- 25:43Speaker 3: I won't be in the mirror looking at my but
- 25:45Speaker 3: I'll be practicing.
- 25:46Speaker 7: Though.
- 25:47Speaker 5: Now what you said was actually vitally important, especially for
- 25:49Speaker 5: content creators, public speakers, things that nature, because A you
- 25:53Speaker 5: have to be open the feedback absolutely and B it's
- 25:56Speaker 5: just like I always say, like for me, learning like
- 26:00Speaker 5: playing sports taught me more than like the academic side
- 26:02Speaker 5: of school. So yeah, one one of the things that
- 26:05Speaker 5: I learned from sports, playing in sports, I never forget,
- 26:08Speaker 5: you know, watching game film. And I have been watching
- 26:11Speaker 5: game film my whole life, like you know, even in
- 26:13Speaker 5: high school, like we watched game film and I never
- 26:15Speaker 5: I was the kind of person like I never really
- 26:17Speaker 5: paid attention. I was in the back, like you know
- 26:19Speaker 5: what I'm saying, like I ain't really pay attention to
- 26:21Speaker 5: game film. But I remember when I when I was
- 26:24Speaker 5: at u NBC to coach Monroe and I sat down
- 26:28Speaker 5: with him and it was me and him in the office,
- 26:31Speaker 5: and he was kind of like it was the first
- 26:33Speaker 5: time somebody had ever actually walked me through how to
- 26:35Speaker 5: actually watch game film. Because you're thinking you're watching game
- 26:38Speaker 5: film and you're just watching it, but I'm just watching
- 26:40Speaker 5: it from just like I'm just watching it. He's showing me,
- 26:44Speaker 5: like you see this, backcut this, and he's pausing it
- 26:47Speaker 5: and he's like, so, now this is my first time
- 26:48Speaker 5: actually seeing it how a coach is seeing it, you
- 26:52Speaker 5: know what I'm saying. So it gave me a whole
- 26:54Speaker 5: different perspective on how to actually watch the game, Like
- 26:56Speaker 5: even like rest in Peace Kobe, and Kobe did that
- 26:59Speaker 5: thing the call when he was breaking down game and yeah.
- 27:03Speaker 5: So it's like I say that to say for you,
- 27:07Speaker 5: that's like when I'm envisioning when you're watching yourself with
- 27:10Speaker 5: no volume more and you're watching your mannerisms and all that,
- 27:14Speaker 5: it's kind of like watching game film. It's like, oh,
- 27:16Speaker 5: I missed that cut right here. I gotta do that.
- 27:19Speaker 5: So I think it's vitally important for content creators a
- 27:23Speaker 5: not to get defensive when somebody gives them constructive criticism,
- 27:26Speaker 5: and also to watch your content. I know, like a
- 27:31Speaker 5: lot of times like we put our stuff and be like,
- 27:33Speaker 5: we don't want to watch it after we do it.
- 27:35Speaker 5: But it's like, by watching it from a critical standpoint,
- 27:39Speaker 5: you can say, oh, I'm not making eye contact, or
- 27:41Speaker 5: I'm cutting somebody off, or it'll actually help you tremendously.
- 27:47Speaker 4: It's crazy you said that because my brother when we
- 27:48Speaker 4: started the podcast, he knows us, he's been around us
- 27:51Speaker 4: our whole lives, and he was like, yoall, don't listen
- 27:53Speaker 4: to anything.
- 27:54Speaker 6: I watched it on mute. I listened to it.
- 27:56Speaker 4: I watched on mute because I just want to see
- 27:58Speaker 4: how much y'all engaging with each other. I want to
- 28:00Speaker 4: see if y'all looking at each other. I want to
- 28:01Speaker 4: see if y'all really enjoying it. And he was like, yo,
- 28:04Speaker 4: y'all got it, because I know, like y'all know each
- 28:06Speaker 4: other so well that I know when he's about to
- 28:08Speaker 4: say something, you start laughing. Like he watched the manual
- 28:10Speaker 4: so here and you said, I'm like, yo, damn. He
- 28:12Speaker 4: knew that from the beginning, and.
- 28:13Speaker 5: That helped us a lot too. When we first started
- 28:15Speaker 5: the podcast, we used to listen. I used to listen
- 28:16Speaker 5: to it like ten times, and I was so critical
- 28:19Speaker 5: on everything, and I was like, you were saying a lot.
- 28:22Speaker 5: We both were saying a lot. Yeah, yeah, you know,
- 28:24Speaker 5: telling him. And I learned because I actually I have
- 28:27Speaker 5: a degree in public and communication, so I learned that
- 28:29Speaker 5: when somebody says, most of the time, they're thinking about
- 28:31Speaker 5: what they're going to say, you know. So it's like
- 28:33Speaker 5: almost like a way to actually get your thoughts together,
- 28:36Speaker 5: and you're like.
- 28:39Speaker 4: When we were it was like thirty seconds, was like yo,
- 28:43Speaker 4: I'm like yo, bro, like yo, you talked like we
- 28:45Speaker 4: got we got each other all, like we got to
- 28:47Speaker 4: get like spaced.
- 28:48Speaker 6: In between it. It was great because it be me
- 28:49Speaker 6: and him in the room.
- 28:50Speaker 4: And then when we said the thing, I was like,
- 28:53Speaker 4: I brought to my coworker shout out to Melissa.
- 28:55Speaker 6: She was like, I was like, you think I'm thinking
- 28:57Speaker 6: too much? She was like, no, you should think before
- 28:59Speaker 6: you speak.
- 29:00Speaker 4: I was like, you know what, You're right, I'm gonna
- 29:02Speaker 4: stop saying it, but I am going to keep that.
- 29:04Speaker 5: Part so let me ask you this, when do you
- 29:06Speaker 5: really hit your stride and become all right? So you're
- 29:10Speaker 5: figuring it out, You're working with a variety of different groups,
- 29:14Speaker 5: church groups, sports, like you said, old ladies, anybody that's listening.
- 29:18Speaker 5: But your goal is to eventually move up into the
- 29:20Speaker 5: corporate world because if anybody's not familiar, that's like real,
- 29:23Speaker 5: real money is in the public speaking game. They pay
- 29:27Speaker 5: hundreds of thousand dollars depending on who you are, to
- 29:29Speaker 5: bring you into corporate events and things of that nature.
- 29:31Speaker 5: So when do you really start to hit that stride
- 29:35Speaker 5: and move up to the next level.
- 29:37Speaker 3: Yeah, So.
- 29:39Speaker 1: In terms of just speaking, like and building up a presentation,
- 29:44Speaker 1: of building up my clientele, I have been speaking for
- 29:47Speaker 1: a while, Like I started early twenties, and as I
- 29:52Speaker 1: was out speaking, a lot of people didn't notice. Man,
- 29:56Speaker 1: I've been making money and speaking for a long time
- 30:00Speaker 1: because of my perspective about it, because of how I
- 30:03Speaker 1: viewed it, and because of my nature to work. And
- 30:06Speaker 1: so you could go somewhere and get paid a certain amount,
- 30:10Speaker 1: do a certain number of those gigs, make a certain
- 30:12Speaker 1: amount of month, whether it was when you first started
- 30:14Speaker 1: and you want to get sixty thousand dollars a month, right,
- 30:17Speaker 1: and you get paid whatever, whether you get paid ten
- 30:20Speaker 1: g's at the time, whatever, slice it up and you
- 30:23Speaker 1: go and you do the work. But when my perspective
- 30:26Speaker 1: change one day, I'll never forget. I was speaking to
- 30:29Speaker 1: an engineering company. It was years ago, and I go
- 30:33Speaker 1: in and I speak, and I think at the time
- 30:35Speaker 1: it's probably the third biggest still company in the world.
- 30:38Speaker 1: And I'm in there and I speak, and I'll never
- 30:41Speaker 1: forget it was the first time I got seventy five
- 30:43Speaker 1: hundred dollars speak and I speak, and I'm hype.
- 30:48Speaker 3: I'm stoked. Right. I get back to my hotel, I
- 30:51Speaker 3: got my check and I'm like.
- 30:53Speaker 1: Man, I just got seventy five right, and I'm talking
- 30:57Speaker 1: to the white I said, but something happened to night
- 31:00Speaker 1: joint blew my mind, all right, And this was years ago.
- 31:03Speaker 3: I never forget. After I spoke. It was a CEO
- 31:06Speaker 3: in the crowd of.
- 31:08Speaker 1: He was a part of the company, but he had
- 31:10Speaker 1: several divisions of his own, and he came up to
- 31:13Speaker 1: me and he was like, man, that was incredible.
- 31:15Speaker 3: He was like, can I pull you to the side
- 31:16Speaker 3: and talk to you.
- 31:17Speaker 6: I was like yeah.
- 31:18Speaker 1: He was like I don't know what you got for that.
- 31:21Speaker 1: He was like, but I would have gave you twenty
- 31:22Speaker 1: to twenty five thousand dollars for that.
- 31:25Speaker 3: And I was like what.
- 31:28Speaker 5: I was like, price going up, price going up?
- 31:31Speaker 3: And he was like in check though.
- 31:34Speaker 1: Like that next Wednesday, my man hit me up and
- 31:39Speaker 1: he offered me two separate gigs and two different cities,
- 31:43Speaker 1: and he paid me that twenty apiece for each. And
- 31:47Speaker 1: it changed my perspective. But what he said to me
- 31:50Speaker 1: was I never forget. He said, Man, you're already speaking.
- 31:52Speaker 1: You work hard. I could tell you value what you
- 31:54Speaker 1: do and you're doing it the right way. He said,
- 31:57Speaker 1: don't do that to your family. Right, Because I was
- 32:00Speaker 1: so locked in on the process communication, It's like, don't
- 32:03Speaker 1: do that to your family, don't undervalue yourself, don't do
- 32:06Speaker 1: that to your wife and your children. Right, Charge what
- 32:09Speaker 1: you're worth. Right, you're worth this, Go out and charge
- 32:12Speaker 1: it and go get it. People will give you this.
- 32:15Speaker 6: Right.
- 32:15Speaker 1: You've been giving everybody a deal right with how you operate.
- 32:18Speaker 1: And that changed my perspective. Man, That was that was
- 32:21Speaker 1: years ago. That's the epitome of know your worth absolutely.
- 32:25Speaker 1: So can we talk about twenty eleventh May eleventh, or
- 32:29Speaker 1: no doubt. I know you know the date because it's
- 32:33Speaker 1: a pivotal moment in your life when you meet the biggest,
- 32:36Speaker 1: one of the biggest bosses of them all. It's sure
- 32:38Speaker 1: that that lady who used to dominate TV and still
- 32:41Speaker 1: does the medium to a certain extent, run into Oprah.
- 32:45Speaker 6: Yeah, but very intentionally you break down that story.
- 32:48Speaker 3: Yeah, man, I met Oprah. I was at a point
- 32:51Speaker 3: in my life.
- 32:52Speaker 1: This was around the time when I was trying to
- 32:54Speaker 1: figure out some things with speaking and just my purpose
- 32:57Speaker 1: in general. And I had my book at the time,
- 33:00Speaker 1: my autobiography, and I was questioning myself. I was questioning
- 33:04Speaker 1: my purpose. I was questioning the creator, right. I was
- 33:08Speaker 1: at that point in the journey that we all hit
- 33:10Speaker 1: at some point to win a cat be like, man,
- 33:12Speaker 1: am I really supposed to be doing this?
- 33:15Speaker 3: Like is it really going to provide? Am I really
- 33:17Speaker 3: going to be fulfilled?
- 33:19Speaker 1: And I got up one morning and I was getting
- 33:21Speaker 1: dressed and I looked at my wife. You know, she
- 33:24Speaker 1: was getting dressed. At the time, she was a school teacher,
- 33:27Speaker 1: and she was getting dressed and I said, Babe, you're
- 33:28Speaker 1: not gonna believe it.
- 33:30Speaker 3: She was like, what you got.
- 33:30Speaker 1: I was like, I'm going to meet Oprah in Chicago.
- 33:32Speaker 1: I'm about to give it a book. And my wife
- 33:35Speaker 1: was like, oh, ain't.
- 33:36Speaker 2: You no Oprah.
- 33:38Speaker 1: I was like nah, and she was like, you know
- 33:41Speaker 1: somebody at the studio and I was like nah. She
- 33:45Speaker 1: was like you sure. I was like yeah. She was
- 33:48Speaker 1: like go for it. You know me and my wife
- 33:50Speaker 1: in rocking since fifth grade. You know what I'm saying.
- 33:53Speaker 1: So she know me, I know her. And when she
- 33:56Speaker 1: said go for it at the time, I probably had
- 33:58Speaker 1: like two hundred dollars to my name.
- 34:00Speaker 3: I was in my truck. I went out.
- 34:01Speaker 1: I got in my truck like I left that day,
- 34:03Speaker 1: like when she went to work. I left. I got
- 34:05Speaker 1: to Chattanooga. I called my buddy Jeff turning in Knoxville, Tennessee.
- 34:10Speaker 1: He picked up. I said, Jeff, you're not gonna believe it.
- 34:13Speaker 1: Jeff's like, what's up inc. I said, man, I'm headed
- 34:14Speaker 1: to Chicago. I'm about to meet Oprah and give him
- 34:17Speaker 1: my book. Jeff was like, ink, you no open. I
- 34:20Speaker 1: was like nah. Jeff was like, oh, I know what
- 34:24Speaker 1: this is. He was like, Ink, You're an extremely ambitious dude.
- 34:27Speaker 1: It's like I get it. He's like, man, but the
- 34:29Speaker 1: chances of this happening slim to none. He said, Man,
- 34:33Speaker 1: I want you to hang up this phone. Call me
- 34:35Speaker 1: when you get the Knoxville, like, I want you to
- 34:37Speaker 1: go all the way up there and be too embarrassing,
- 34:39Speaker 1: too hurt when it doesn't happen. And I called Jeff
- 34:41Speaker 1: when I got the knox He picked up and he said,
- 34:44Speaker 1: you're still going on you I said yeah. He said,
- 34:46Speaker 1: stop by and pick me up. Man, I just make
- 34:48Speaker 1: the ride with you. And we get up there that night. Jeff,
- 34:51Speaker 1: you know, he gets us a room. Get up the
- 34:53Speaker 1: next morning and I go downstairs and Jeff's standing in
- 34:56Speaker 1: the corner getting ready to go work out, and he
- 34:58Speaker 1: watching me like this, dude, serious.
- 35:00Speaker 3: And I'm at the front desk like.
- 35:02Speaker 1: Man, you could tell me how to get the Harpo
- 35:04Speaker 1: studios like I'm debt serious. And they give me the
- 35:07Speaker 1: little joint and I go to walk out of the
- 35:09Speaker 1: door and Jeff is like, ain't wait, man, like I'm
- 35:11Speaker 1: gonna get us a little car real quick. And we
- 35:14Speaker 1: go over there and we pull up. And this was
- 35:16Speaker 1: when her last shows were happening. Around that time, people everywhere.
- 35:19Speaker 1: I get out of the car with the book. Jeff
- 35:21Speaker 1: is like, I'm gonna go across the street to this
- 35:23Speaker 1: little coffee shop. It's like, I see you in a minute.
- 35:25Speaker 1: I'm sure this won't be long. And so I'm walking
- 35:28Speaker 1: around the building. Now keep in mind, I just got
- 35:31Speaker 1: my book. I'm walking and every door that will open.
- 35:34Speaker 1: If I was by a door, I would try to
- 35:37Speaker 1: go in it, right, just young, ambitious, right, not thinking.
- 35:41Speaker 1: As soon as I was stepping the door, like, hey,
- 35:43Speaker 1: I'm Inky Johnson. I drove up from Atlanta. I want
- 35:45Speaker 1: to give open my book. They like, man, get out
- 35:47Speaker 1: of here, like, won't do that. I'm like, brother, don't
- 35:50Speaker 1: y'all give away. I got a book, you know what
- 35:53Speaker 1: I'm saying. God like, y'all get wait cards.
- 35:57Speaker 3: They like, well't do that. And I got so discouraged.
- 36:00Speaker 2: Bro.
- 36:00Speaker 1: I went around the back of the building. I sat
- 36:03Speaker 1: down right, and I was like, sitting just on the
- 36:05Speaker 1: side of the building. I was like, man, my wife
- 36:07Speaker 1: gonna go off and I'll never forget. I looked up.
- 36:10Speaker 1: Everybody had went in the building. And when I looked up,
- 36:13Speaker 1: I looked down the sidewalk and I was walking. It
- 36:16Speaker 1: looked to be like a homeless gentleman. I sit down
- 36:18Speaker 1: beside my man and I was like, how you doing.
- 36:21Speaker 1: My man was like I'm great. He was like, how
- 36:23Speaker 1: are you. I was like, man, I'm cool. I've seen
- 36:26Speaker 1: better days, right, the irony of the situation. And when
- 36:29Speaker 1: I look up, I see Oprah and her security guard
- 36:33Speaker 1: coming down the sidewalk and I stand up. It's just
- 36:36Speaker 1: me and them, and I'm like surely, And I walked
- 36:40Speaker 1: toward her. The security gonna come up, move me out
- 36:42Speaker 1: of the way, but I'm gonna still take my shot.
- 36:44Speaker 1: And as I'm walking, she's walking and they don't stop,
- 36:47Speaker 1: and I don't stop. Get a couple of feet away
- 36:49Speaker 1: from me. I said, hey, I'm Inky Johnson. I drove
- 36:52Speaker 1: up from Atlanta. I wanted to give you my book.
- 36:55Speaker 1: And first thing she does, like I got on a
- 36:58Speaker 1: two X suit at the time, say, ain't no here
- 37:01Speaker 1: to it? Yeah, grasps the joint like doing light lord.
- 37:07Speaker 1: She grab yeah, yeah, she's doing light little shake like
- 37:10Speaker 1: this is a nice suit. I think she's trying to
- 37:12Speaker 1: see She's trying to run game, right. I was like,
- 37:15Speaker 1: thank you. I was like, I drove up to give
- 37:17Speaker 1: you my book. I would love to take a picture
- 37:19Speaker 1: with you she grabbed a book. She's like sure, she
- 37:22Speaker 1: handed to the security guard. We take the picture. She
- 37:25Speaker 1: was like, all right, I got to go in and
- 37:26Speaker 1: do my show. And that she's walking in my man.
- 37:29Speaker 1: Jeff running like, ain't tell her a ways?
- 37:34Speaker 3: Like oh yeah, little faith.
- 37:37Speaker 1: And as I go to walk off, man, I never
- 37:39Speaker 1: forget this.
- 37:42Speaker 6: This episode is brought to you by P and C Bank.

- 39:33Speaker 8: Coach, the energy out there felt different. What changed for
- 39:35Speaker 8: the team today?
- 39:36Speaker 1: It was the new game day scratches from the California
- 39:38Speaker 1: Lottery players.
- 39:39Speaker 3: Everything. Those games sent the team's energy through the roof.
- 39:42Speaker 8: Are you saying it was the off field play that
- 39:44Speaker 8: made the difference on the field.
- 39:45Speaker 3: Hey, little play makes your day, and today it made
- 39:48Speaker 3: the game. That's all for now, coach.
- 39:50Speaker 8: One more question play the new Los Angeles Chargers, San
- 39:53Speaker 8: Francisco forty nine Ers and Los Angeles Rams Scratchers from
- 39:56Speaker 8: the California Lottery. A little play can make your day.
- 40:00Speaker 8: Peacepay Responsible. It must be eighteen years older to purchase claim.
- 40:02Speaker 1: I go to walk off. Her security guard says. He
- 40:05Speaker 1: was like, hey, lo man, it's that come here, and
- 40:08Speaker 1: I walk over to him. He was like, I'm not
- 40:10Speaker 1: saying anything it's gonna come up this. I'm not saying
- 40:13Speaker 1: you're gonna be on her book club show. I'm not
- 40:15Speaker 1: saying any of that. He said, I just want you
- 40:17Speaker 1: to know what just happened. That never happens. He said,
- 40:21Speaker 1: She'll tell me go up, clear him out and tell
- 40:23Speaker 1: him send it here. She'll never get it. He was like,
- 40:25Speaker 1: I'm not saying anything is gonna come out of it.
- 40:28Speaker 1: I just want you to know that that moment that
- 40:30Speaker 1: just happened, it never happens. I was like, thank you,
- 40:33Speaker 1: and I walked off and I sent the picture out,
- 40:35Speaker 1: put it on social media.
- 40:37Speaker 3: Cats is like, Man, you're gonna be on the show
- 40:40Speaker 3: on the book Club, you know what I'm saying.
- 40:42Speaker 1: I was like, nah, I was like, I don't care, man,
- 40:44Speaker 1: it ain't about that. And then you know, Cat's like,
- 40:46Speaker 1: what you mean you don't care? It ain't about that.
- 40:48Speaker 1: You went all the way up there. I was like,
- 40:50Speaker 1: it wasn't about that for me. I said, it was
- 40:52Speaker 1: about confirmation. And I was like, the Creator showed me
- 40:56Speaker 1: confirmation in that moment that he was still walking with
- 40:59Speaker 1: that seven year old kid from Kirkwood, right that fell
- 41:02Speaker 1: in love with the game of football at a young
- 41:04Speaker 1: age and wanted to help his family. I was trying
- 41:06Speaker 1: to find purpose, right. Oprah was the vehicle. Oprah was
- 41:09Speaker 1: the tool that God placed in my journey at the
- 41:12Speaker 1: time to say, all, bro, I got you, Like, if
- 41:14Speaker 1: you want to do something, this outland is to see
- 41:17Speaker 1: if I'm still rocking with you, do it, and I'm
- 41:19Speaker 1: gonna show you I'm still rocking with you. And so
- 41:21Speaker 1: at that point it gave me all the confirmation and
- 41:23Speaker 1: all the fuel I needed. And I firmly believe amongst
- 41:26Speaker 1: our journeys in life, like it's some things that we
- 41:29Speaker 1: encounter and some things we go through like I'm sure you'
- 41:32Speaker 1: all then experienced it with the podcast. Entrepreneurs experience it
- 41:35Speaker 1: all the time, like God speaks, speaks to us in
- 41:38Speaker 1: different ways, like things happen. Confirmation comes in different ways
- 41:41Speaker 1: to where you know, like oh, that was that moment
- 41:44Speaker 1: to tell me to keep pressing and to keep going.
- 41:46Speaker 1: And that was that moment for me that told me, nah,
- 41:49Speaker 1: I ain't keep going.
- 41:50Speaker 5: I got you that relationship ever maturity and.
- 41:53Speaker 3: Never yielded nothing, never yielded nothing.
- 41:55Speaker 5: But that just gave you confirmation.
- 41:57Speaker 1: It propelled my faith. It's probably the most important thing.
- 42:00Speaker 1: I'm sure your link back up.
- 42:01Speaker 5: Well one day, I think the stars that faith journey
- 42:04Speaker 5: is going to continue. Let me ask you this because
- 42:08Speaker 5: I'm sure you're aware of but I got put on
- 42:10Speaker 5: shout out to vow. She's a friend of mine. She
- 42:12Speaker 5: was the first person telling me about a rider when
- 42:15Speaker 5: you know, when I when you started first speaking and
- 42:17Speaker 5: she's like, you got a rider, And I'm like a rider,
- 42:20Speaker 5: Like what does that mean? You know what I'm saying.
- 42:23Speaker 5: So she was like, you know, I'm gonna send you
- 42:24Speaker 5: my rider. So in her rider, it was like, all right,
- 42:27Speaker 5: I need a first class plane ticket I need a
- 42:29Speaker 5: four to five star hotel accommodation. You don't need to be
- 42:32Speaker 5: paid fifty percent up front fifty percent on the back end.
- 42:35Speaker 5: She's like, you just can't be like saying like, hey,
- 42:38Speaker 5: just give me cash like you got to. You gotta
- 42:41Speaker 5: treat this like a business. So can you talk about
- 42:43Speaker 5: that and get some games for the people that might
- 42:44Speaker 5: not be aware of like how that works for the
- 42:46Speaker 5: public speakers.
- 42:47Speaker 3: Absolutely, it's very important.
- 42:49Speaker 1: And because if you don't have that in place, you
- 42:53Speaker 1: have nothing to hold them to. And the CADI furnests
- 42:56Speaker 1: you in that, you know what I'm saying, like cast
- 42:58Speaker 1: thing a cademy for nessing in the street, Like you're
- 43:00Speaker 1: show up in that check won't be there and the
- 43:02Speaker 1: cat will say, oh, something happened with accountant, right, And
- 43:05Speaker 1: but you done went up and you gave them everything
- 43:07Speaker 1: you had and you're going back home empty handed, and
- 43:09Speaker 1: you can't blame nobody but yourself because you didn't have
- 43:12Speaker 1: any structure in place. And so for me, when it
- 43:14Speaker 1: came to hotels, it came to flights. When it came
- 43:17Speaker 1: to deposit, it came to direct deposit, whatever the case
- 43:20Speaker 1: may be. I'll never forget when I first started. You know,
- 43:23Speaker 1: you want to be modest, you don't want to ask
- 43:25Speaker 1: for too much, and you want to be respectful. And
- 43:28Speaker 1: I was trying to do that and the cat was
- 43:30Speaker 1: like no, Like this comes with the business, right, like
- 43:34Speaker 1: how you do what you do. You want to be
- 43:35Speaker 1: comfortable when you're going to row, And so for me,
- 43:38Speaker 1: like everywhere I go, it's a first class flight in
- 43:42Speaker 1: my writer, you know what I'm saying. Everywhere I go,
- 43:44Speaker 1: it got me five star accommodations. Everywhere I go. I'm
- 43:48Speaker 1: being paid before I go most of the time, or
- 43:51Speaker 1: I get the check on site. Like I don't go
- 43:53Speaker 1: anywhere and I go speak and I'm not paid either
- 43:57Speaker 1: yet or at that event. Because I look at what
- 43:59Speaker 1: I do, and I run what I do like a business.
- 44:02Speaker 1: It's a real business, and so I treat it that way.
- 44:05Speaker 1: But that writer, that contract is very important because if
- 44:07Speaker 1: you don't have that in place, I could cat of
- 44:09Speaker 1: get you to come to speak.
- 44:11Speaker 3: You'll speak, and then it'll.
- 44:12Speaker 1: Start to jage your process because instead of worrying about
- 44:15Speaker 1: your content, now you're worrying about the money and worrying
- 44:18Speaker 1: about how you're going to get it. You need to
- 44:19Speaker 1: be worried about your mission and your and your focus,
- 44:22Speaker 1: and your and your principles and your values.
- 44:24Speaker 4: So you obviously present as a solo entity. Are you
- 44:29Speaker 4: also handling the business? Are you built out a team
- 44:31Speaker 4: that creates the structure and creates the system to make
- 44:34Speaker 4: your job a little lighter?
- 44:36Speaker 3: Right?
- 44:36Speaker 6: You? You can just focus on the speaking.
- 44:38Speaker 1: Yeah, So got four cats, you know, and we operate
- 44:42Speaker 1: as a company. It used to be a point in
- 44:44Speaker 1: time to where I was doing things by myself early
- 44:47Speaker 1: early in my career, to where when I just started speaking,
- 44:51Speaker 1: and then opportunities started to come and I'm feeling everything right,
- 44:55Speaker 1: I'm negotiating.
- 44:56Speaker 3: I'm talking to a cat, I'm emailing right.
- 44:59Speaker 1: And then it got to a point to where I
- 45:00Speaker 1: started to really structure my business and get people on
- 45:03Speaker 1: my team. And a cat gave me some great advice
- 45:07Speaker 1: early on, man, because I was speaking to these companies
- 45:10Speaker 1: and to these corporations. And another thing, I wouldn't just
- 45:13Speaker 1: go on the road to speak. I would going to
- 45:15Speaker 1: road to acquire, you know, knowledge. I would want to
- 45:18Speaker 1: get information. I would go to these successful companies like
- 45:21Speaker 1: I'm not just coming to speak, I want to learn too,
- 45:22Speaker 1: So I'm gonna come and sit in the office and see,
- 45:25Speaker 1: can I.
- 45:25Speaker 3: Talk to you for a hour?
- 45:27Speaker 7: Right?
- 45:27Speaker 1: How have you sustained this company for the past thirty
- 45:30Speaker 1: years and been as successful with the amount of employees
- 45:32Speaker 1: you got? Like, let me get some of that information,
- 45:35Speaker 1: Like David tell you everywhere I go, when I go
- 45:38Speaker 1: to a place to where it's an event and people
- 45:40Speaker 1: are speaking, like, bro, I'm gonna show up with my notepad, right,
- 45:43Speaker 1: Like if y'all have a live event and I'm there, like,
- 45:46Speaker 1: you can guarantee I'm gonna be there with my notepad
- 45:48Speaker 1: and my pen, I'm gonna be listening and taking notes
- 45:51Speaker 1: and I'll never forget. I was talking to a dude
- 45:54Speaker 1: and I said, what's the most important thing you can
- 45:56Speaker 1: tell me about a company of business? Building it out
- 46:00Speaker 1: in the position that I'm in, right, And he said,
- 46:03Speaker 1: a little success can create a lot of overhead. He said,
- 46:07Speaker 1: a little success can create a lot of overhead. And
- 46:09Speaker 1: for me it was so important because a lot of
- 46:11Speaker 1: times in speaking in whatever realm they're doing it, then
- 46:15Speaker 1: cats will go out and get twelve cats, right, and
- 46:18Speaker 1: don't even know how to control a payroll. While you
- 46:21Speaker 1: got twelve cats, Why you're going to get a building
- 46:24Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying, like to build what you're
- 46:25Speaker 1: gonna just film yourself. Now, when you got an operation
- 46:29Speaker 1: in that building, like you got content in that building,
- 46:33Speaker 1: you got events in that building. That's great. But for
- 46:35Speaker 1: most cats, cats want to seem so big time and
- 46:38Speaker 1: seem so important. Cats go get all these people and
- 46:41Speaker 1: don't know how to structure and don't know how to
- 46:43Speaker 1: pay him. And so I'm all about being efficient and effective.
- 46:46Speaker 1: So if I can get the job done with four
- 46:48Speaker 1: cats and we can turn a profit and do what
- 46:50Speaker 1: we do in a great way, everybody family can eat
- 46:52Speaker 1: and we can handle our business.
- 46:53Speaker 3: Let's work. Cats be lazy.
- 46:56Speaker 4: That's incredible because in my mind, I'm thinking about my
- 46:59Speaker 4: favorite quotes that you said when you go into a
- 47:01Speaker 4: space and you're like, yo, I'm willing, even at this level,
- 47:04Speaker 4: to keep going and taking notes and learning from other people.
- 47:07Speaker 6: You said, I want to read it to.
- 47:08Speaker 4: You said, locating ego in situations so we don't miss
- 47:11Speaker 4: our blessings. So when you started, where was your ego?
- 47:16Speaker 4: And is this something that you have to learn through
- 47:18Speaker 4: the process, Like you know what, let me humble myself
- 47:20Speaker 4: before so I can continue the faith journey and see
- 47:22Speaker 4: the blessings and receive them.
- 47:24Speaker 1: Oh for sure, definitely definitely had to humble myself because
- 47:29Speaker 1: you know, when you're young and you learning how to speak,
- 47:31Speaker 1: you like a young cat that who you know how
- 47:34Speaker 1: to hoop, you get a crossover, you know what I'm saying.
- 47:36Speaker 1: You know how to come from that triple threat. You
- 47:38Speaker 1: know how to pivot. You just want to dump, you
- 47:40Speaker 1: know what I'm saying. You just want to smack once
- 47:42Speaker 1: you learn how to dunk. Everybody getting posterized. You know
- 47:45Speaker 1: what I'm saying, I want to put everybody on the poster.
- 47:48Speaker 1: And it's the same way with speaking, like you're just
- 47:50Speaker 1: going there. You just want to kill it, like you
- 47:52Speaker 1: just want to go hard. Right, I'm a passionate dude.
- 47:55Speaker 1: I'm studying like I'm seeing cats do what they do. Right,
- 47:59Speaker 1: I'm going to events and a cat to tell me, like, man,
- 48:01Speaker 1: like you got the highest feedback, but you got paid
- 48:04Speaker 1: the least. You know what I'm saying, Like you got
- 48:07Speaker 1: you got the greatest feedback, Like they gave you a ovation,
- 48:10Speaker 1: but it ain't got of everybody that just spoke. Bro,
- 48:12Speaker 1: they paid you the least. You know what I'm saying,
- 48:15Speaker 1: Like that's an ego check. But at the same time,
- 48:17Speaker 1: I didn't take it and say, oh man, they paid
- 48:20Speaker 1: like a little boy.
- 48:21Speaker 3: I'm like, bro, what did they do to get paid
- 48:23Speaker 3: what they got paid?
- 48:25Speaker 1: I ain't tripping. I got a wife and I got children.
- 48:28Speaker 1: Put me on game. Let me understand it right. I
- 48:31Speaker 1: didn't want to be a speaker my whole life, so
- 48:33Speaker 1: I never studied the industry. So when you tell me this,
- 48:36Speaker 1: let me locate my ego in the situation. Let me
- 48:39Speaker 1: find my ego in the situation, because it's people. The
- 48:41Speaker 1: reason is so important when you start dealing with things,
- 48:44Speaker 1: whether it be anger, whether it be precious situations, opposition, adversity,
- 48:48Speaker 1: whether you're speaking and things are not going to where
- 48:51Speaker 1: you want them to go.
- 48:52Speaker 3: Like at a certain point, you gotta check your ego.
- 48:54Speaker 1: Whether you get to a point and you think you
- 48:55Speaker 1: demand a certain amount and you're not getting paid that
- 48:58Speaker 1: and so you end up pricing yourself out of them market.
- 49:00Speaker 1: You gotta locate your ego so you can be smart
- 49:03Speaker 1: about what you do and learn how to navigate some
- 49:04Speaker 1: of those treacherous waters to accomplish a goal.
- 49:07Speaker 5: It's one of these things that's interesting as far as
- 49:11Speaker 5: pricing for entrepreneurs, and I personally think the right price
- 49:15Speaker 5: is whatever people are willing to pay for it. That's
- 49:17Speaker 5: the right price for product, because you might think your
- 49:19Speaker 5: product is worth a whole bunch more, and it probably is,
- 49:23Speaker 5: but if nobody's willing to pay for it, you're just
- 49:25Speaker 5: gonna stand and like be broke like about So I
- 49:30Speaker 5: feel like public speaking is the same way, because we
- 49:32Speaker 5: spoke to like Max Maxwell when he told us like
- 49:34Speaker 5: he had Gary vecome and I think he paid them
- 49:36Speaker 5: like one hundred and twenty thousand dollars, And then you
- 49:38Speaker 5: got public speakers that might make one hundred dollars right,
- 49:41Speaker 5: and everybody's in between. So how for people that's trying
- 49:45Speaker 5: to get into the game or even people that might
- 49:47Speaker 5: be in the game. But it's one of these things
- 49:50Speaker 5: where it's like, like you said, a lot of times
- 49:52Speaker 5: you might just low ball yourself because you feel like
- 49:54Speaker 5: you don't want to tell somebody a crazy number, and
- 49:56Speaker 5: they in they mind they're thinking like, oh, I would
- 49:58Speaker 5: have paid you three more times. So how do you
- 50:01Speaker 5: know what the right price is? And how do you
- 50:04Speaker 5: work your way up like periodically without actually pricing yourself
- 50:08Speaker 5: out of situations?
- 50:10Speaker 1: So like a strategy that worked for me, Like early on,
- 50:14Speaker 1: I would just try to put out different prices, you know,
- 50:17Speaker 1: and try to test the market and see, all right,
- 50:19Speaker 1: they land in that ten, or they're landing that twenty,
- 50:22Speaker 1: or they land in that twenty five like the most
- 50:24Speaker 1: and so boom, I'm gonna go with this. And one
- 50:28Speaker 1: time a dude told me, He's like, nah, but I
- 50:29Speaker 1: don't do that. He's like, create the form. I was like,
- 50:32Speaker 1: what form the price range form? Let's just put it
- 50:35Speaker 1: on the form and if a cat won't, you get
- 50:37Speaker 1: a couple of questions on there so you can see
- 50:39Speaker 1: if they're serious or not, and they'll put their price
- 50:42Speaker 1: range in there and you don't even have to ask them.
- 50:44Speaker 1: And so you could be thinking twenty five. But you
- 50:46Speaker 1: create this form when your site or whatever source they're
- 50:50Speaker 1: coming to witness and see you do what you do?
- 50:52Speaker 1: You create the form they put in the price range,
- 50:54Speaker 1: and so you could have been thinking, oh, man, I'm
- 50:56Speaker 1: gonna do this event for twenty and a cat will
- 50:58Speaker 1: put on there.
- 51:00Speaker 3: A budget of sixty to seventy K.
- 51:03Speaker 5: That's what Lenney and Jef said, right like, you you
- 51:05Speaker 5: don't really say your price, you ask what's their budget
- 51:07Speaker 5: is actually what's your budget and you'll.
- 51:09Speaker 6: Know if this is something that I can allocate time for.
- 51:12Speaker 5: Absolutely, Yeah, shout out to gen like they told us
- 51:14Speaker 5: that we need a Google that you see people there
- 51:16Speaker 5: all the time. Like even like if you're working with
- 51:18Speaker 5: like a pr PERM or something like that, they don't
- 51:20Speaker 5: say it with their prices. They say, what's your monthly budget?
- 51:24Speaker 5: What are you looking to spend?
- 51:25Speaker 6: Well, know what we can provide you with.
- 51:26Speaker 5: No, that that makes a lot of sense because you
- 51:28Speaker 5: don't really know what the price is if they give
- 51:31Speaker 5: you a budget, and then you can also offer all
- 51:34Speaker 5: of cart services like all right, I usually charge fifty, Well,
- 51:38Speaker 5: your budget is ten, So here's what we can do.
- 51:40Speaker 5: We can do a zoom call da da da da.
- 51:43Speaker 1: Like I've gotten some of the biggest paying gigs in
- 51:48Speaker 1: my life doing it that way that when I got
- 51:52Speaker 1: the form through, if I just would have looked at
- 51:54Speaker 1: the gig, I wouldn't have been thinking the price range
- 51:57Speaker 1: that they were thinking.
- 51:59Speaker 6: Right.
- 52:00Speaker 3: It blew me out of the water, And I'm like, bet,
- 52:03Speaker 3: I remember what I was like. Rather they make a
- 52:06Speaker 3: mistake and put us in.
- 52:08Speaker 1: And then you talk to them, You're like, oh no,
- 52:10Speaker 1: they that's serious, right, And it was a blessing for me, man,
- 52:14Speaker 1: because it you know, it takes off a load in
- 52:16Speaker 1: the situation to where you going back and forth. That
- 52:19Speaker 1: was just what do you have allocated? What's your budget,
- 52:21Speaker 1: what's the range of it? And then y'all go from
- 52:24Speaker 1: there and.
- 52:25Speaker 5: Then you can do like different things like a panel discussion,
- 52:27Speaker 5: an hour and a half an hour things. Let mesk
- 52:30Speaker 5: you this. How how have you been managing and how
- 52:33Speaker 5: have you seen the industry change during COVID? Being the
- 52:35Speaker 5: age of COVID, everybody's you know, restructuring their business model
- 52:38Speaker 5: and public speaking is one of those things where you know,
- 52:41Speaker 5: it shut down for the vast majority of the world
- 52:44Speaker 5: for live events, virtual events still going on. So how
- 52:48Speaker 5: has that affected the industry you and how have you
- 52:50Speaker 5: been able to pivot?
- 52:51Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 52:51Speaker 1: Man, So I think with the nature of COVID and
- 52:55Speaker 1: what it's done to the business, I think this is
- 52:57Speaker 1: why relationships are so important. So I think this is
- 53:00Speaker 1: why communication is so important and retainers are so important.
- 53:05Speaker 1: Meaning you already have relationships, and you already have people
- 53:09Speaker 1: that you speak for numerous times, you already have contracts
- 53:12Speaker 1: in place. How many times you go to these people,
- 53:15Speaker 1: these organizations, these teams, and so when it's hits, it's
- 53:19Speaker 1: kind of just shifting the landscape. But with me, at
- 53:22Speaker 1: the beginning of COVID, like I talked to a couple
- 53:25Speaker 1: of my buddies that were speaking, and cats just try
- 53:28Speaker 1: to get greedy, right, because you couldn't go live at first.
- 53:31Speaker 1: Now I'm able to go to certain places with small
- 53:33Speaker 1: leadership councils, with companies and teams and things of that
- 53:36Speaker 1: nature and still be able to do work. But when
- 53:39Speaker 1: it first happened, like y'all said, it shut down everything
- 53:41Speaker 1: and it was just virtual. And so what I saw
- 53:43Speaker 1: cats do was get greedy, right, Cats, somebody hit them up,
- 53:47Speaker 1: Hey can you do this?
- 53:48Speaker 3: Virtual?
- 53:49Speaker 1: Cats just go crazy right now it's going to be
- 53:52Speaker 1: this And so they'll just be like, all right, bet
- 53:53Speaker 1: we ain't doing it, and the cats just fall on
- 53:56Speaker 1: his pockets.
- 53:56Speaker 3: Right.
- 53:57Speaker 1: And so for me, when a lot of the companies
- 53:59Speaker 1: and teams and people that I have been working with
- 54:02Speaker 1: that I've already made money with, like I've already been
- 54:05Speaker 1: making money with a lot of these people, I've already
- 54:07Speaker 1: been serving them when they hit me up. At the
- 54:09Speaker 1: beginning of COVID, I could see the climate of what
- 54:12Speaker 1: they were going through. My cats were panicking, cats were
- 54:15Speaker 1: stressed out. Think, we just need you to talk to
- 54:17Speaker 1: them that. Let's set it up. When do you all
- 54:19Speaker 1: want to do it? How many times do you want
- 54:21Speaker 1: to do it?
- 54:21Speaker 3: This early?
- 54:23Speaker 1: How many times you want to do it? All right,
- 54:24Speaker 1: we could do two sessions. Boom boom boom. Can you
- 54:26Speaker 1: do this an hour, hour and a half, No problem,
- 54:29Speaker 1: let's do it. And I did it. I did a
- 54:31Speaker 1: lot of them. I didn't charge a thing. And then
- 54:34Speaker 1: once things got stabilized and people kind of got back
- 54:37Speaker 1: into the pocket to where they was like, all right,
- 54:39Speaker 1: now I see how to navigate it. Like all that
- 54:42Speaker 1: bread came back times ten, right, because of the relationships
- 54:46Speaker 1: that I already had in place, and I was willing
- 54:48Speaker 1: to do something that a lot of people wasn't. And
- 54:50Speaker 1: that was at the beginning of the pandemic. I was
- 54:52Speaker 1: just focusing on serving the people.
- 54:54Speaker 5: You So that's that's key too. So it's like when
- 54:57Speaker 5: even a lot of landlords. I remember Lord of the
- 54:59Speaker 5: Slumpshot though, he's a big time landlord in Jersey, and
- 55:02Speaker 5: he was like, you know, give your tenants if you
- 55:04Speaker 5: can give him some leeway. Yeah, so you can't let
- 55:08Speaker 5: them take advantage of you. But it's a pandemic, like
- 55:10Speaker 5: at the beginning of the pandemic, like you'll give them
- 55:12Speaker 5: a month off, like give them you know what I'm saying,
- 55:14Speaker 5: give them a couple of weeks to get them back
- 55:15Speaker 5: on their feet. Like you're trying to beat these people
- 55:17Speaker 5: over the head and they're gonna be like, I don't
- 55:19Speaker 5: got it, find somebody else. It's a pandemic. You can't
- 55:22Speaker 5: kick me out. No judge is gonna put me out
- 55:24Speaker 5: right now, not in New York at least go back
- 55:27Speaker 5: up to New York ya. So so yeah, so talk
- 55:30Speaker 5: about that a little bit because yeah, I feel like
- 55:32Speaker 5: that that level of just humanity, even everybody struggling, it's
- 55:37Speaker 5: like you gotta, you know, take that little loss or
- 55:40Speaker 5: a long term win as they said, like instead of
- 55:42Speaker 5: trying to just get in somebody's pockets right away, and
- 55:45Speaker 5: it's like you gonna end up hurting yourself even worse.
- 55:48Speaker 1: And I think what it comes down to, like you said,
- 55:50Speaker 1: humanity and valuing people like cats operate out of scarcity,
- 55:55Speaker 1: right like you operating out of scarcely, Like it ain't
- 55:57Speaker 1: gonna be no more times where you can speak no
- 56:00Speaker 1: more times you can make money, and it's gonna make
- 56:01Speaker 1: you make bad decisions and bad choices. And so for me,
- 56:05Speaker 1: it's about valuing what you do first and foremost and
- 56:08Speaker 1: valuing the people that you're able to service.
- 56:10Speaker 3: And so for me, like a lot.
- 56:12Speaker 1: Of times people see me and they say, hey, bro,
- 56:14Speaker 1: you don't have a lot of products, right, Like, what's
- 56:17Speaker 1: up with that? And so it's a strategy on my part, right,
- 56:20Speaker 1: Like I'm trying to build up a level of trust
- 56:22Speaker 1: with the people that follow me.
- 56:24Speaker 5: Right.
- 56:24Speaker 1: Like, in my industry, a lot of people sell things
- 56:27Speaker 1: and they do a great job at it, whether it
- 56:28Speaker 1: be courses, programming, product, merch whatever, and they do a
- 56:31Speaker 1: great job at it. And then it's a lot of
- 56:33Speaker 1: people that do it and you can see it.
- 56:35Speaker 3: It's a quick hit. They're just trying to get something.
- 56:37Speaker 1: And so in my industry, I'm very aware of where
- 56:40Speaker 1: I stand in terms of what I represent. I'm a
- 56:42Speaker 1: young African American male, I'm thirty four years old. Some
- 56:45Speaker 1: of these rooms I go into, some of these companies
- 56:47Speaker 1: I go into, cats are sitting on the front row
- 56:49Speaker 1: like what my man doing. And so I knew if
- 56:52Speaker 1: I was out selling a certain product. Chick fil A
- 56:55Speaker 1: wasn't gonna call me. I knew that. I knew if
- 56:58Speaker 1: I was out selling a certain product like Wells Fargo
- 57:01Speaker 1: wasn't gonna call me. I knew if I was out
- 57:03Speaker 1: selling a certain product. Bank of America wasn't gonna call me. Right,
- 57:06Speaker 1: I knew if I was out selling a certain product,
- 57:08Speaker 1: the third highest selling still company in.
- 57:10Speaker 3: The world, they weren't gonna call me.
- 57:12Speaker 1: Not because I was selling the product, but the perception
- 57:15Speaker 1: that went along with the product of where I stand
- 57:17Speaker 1: in my industry, and so in terms of me and
- 57:19Speaker 1: how I view the landscape of it.
- 57:21Speaker 3: When they call me, they expect me to say, oh,
- 57:24Speaker 3: it's gonna be this.
- 57:24Speaker 1: If you want me to speak at the beginning of
- 57:26Speaker 1: the pandemic, I know you expect me to do it.
- 57:28Speaker 1: I'm a young black man, right, I got a gift.
- 57:31Speaker 1: I know you expect me to do it. So I'm
- 57:33Speaker 1: gonna use reverse psychology on you. When you say what
- 57:35Speaker 1: it is gonna cause it's nothing, I'm good, right, I'm
- 57:38Speaker 1: gonna just add value to you. I'm gonna just serve you, right,
- 57:41Speaker 1: And I'm in the pocket to where I can do
- 57:43Speaker 1: it because of how I grew up right, I ain't
- 57:45Speaker 1: out here living crazy, ain't out here all over the
- 57:47Speaker 1: top doing this and doing that with something to prove.
- 57:50Speaker 3: Now, I'm cool. I could do it. I can.
- 57:51Speaker 1: I can hold my position right, and I'm gonna provide
- 57:54Speaker 1: so much value that after I provide the value when
- 57:56Speaker 1: you get stabilized and you get good and you remember
- 58:00Speaker 1: people that helped you and looked out for you in
- 58:01Speaker 1: the mister badversity in opposition, the first person you're gonna
- 58:05Speaker 1: think about when you come out of the storm is
- 58:07Speaker 1: I'm gonna look out for my man ink. He served
- 58:10Speaker 1: us when they got hot in the kitchen.
- 58:12Speaker 4: So that's interesting because like now right, and especially I
- 58:15Speaker 4: know you're a family man, even now, like you have
- 58:18Speaker 4: to go and you're coming back in the same day
- 58:19Speaker 4: because you want to be around your family.
- 58:21Speaker 6: Is it? What do you think to put the going forward?
- 58:24Speaker 6: What it will be for speakers? Right?
- 58:25Speaker 4: Because most people are like, yo, I'm good right here
- 58:28Speaker 4: in my home. To get me to actually come to you, yeah,
- 58:31Speaker 4: we're gonna have to pay more. You think that's what
- 58:33Speaker 4: we're head with this?
- 58:34Speaker 1: Yeah, I think in a certain instance it is like
- 58:36Speaker 1: for some people, right, And if you got the leverage
- 58:39Speaker 1: to do it.
- 58:39Speaker 3: Hey, by all means do it.
- 58:41Speaker 1: But for a cat that don't have that type of leverage,
- 58:43Speaker 1: I think he's gonna have to make that adjustment. And
- 58:45Speaker 1: the virtual joint, man, that's sweet, like gets sweet. You
- 58:49Speaker 1: can sit there with your camera and you can get busy.
- 58:52Speaker 1: If you really can get busy, you can get man,
- 58:54Speaker 1: it's sweet. You can knock out six in a day,
- 58:57Speaker 1: and some cat's gonna pay you for it, like for real,
- 58:59Speaker 1: for a just sit there in your living room.
- 59:01Speaker 3: You can clock eighty k.
- 59:03Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying, And don't leave and go
- 59:05Speaker 1: in there and you know, fix your sandwich.
- 59:12Speaker 3: Pick your kids up in the carpool line. It's sweet,
- 59:14Speaker 3: you know what I'm saying.
- 59:15Speaker 1: And so but when cats asked you to go to places,
- 59:19Speaker 1: I think it's just based upon what works for you, man.
- 59:22Speaker 1: And if it does work, you know, going and giving
- 59:24Speaker 1: them people all you got. But I think it's gonna
- 59:26Speaker 1: work both ways. I don't think the industry would go
- 59:29Speaker 1: back to the same. Like me, for example, I never
- 59:31Speaker 1: used to do virtual. Cats used to hit me up
- 59:33Speaker 1: and be like, hey, can you do virtual? I just
- 59:34Speaker 1: love doing live so much that I never tapped into it.
- 59:37Speaker 1: But when the pandemic hit, you know, I had to
- 59:39Speaker 1: have a level of mental agility to make that shift.
- 59:42Speaker 3: So I can do it, and I fell in love
- 59:43Speaker 3: with it.
- 59:44Speaker 5: So what's what's what's next for you? Yet? Your vision
- 59:48Speaker 5: as far as how far do you want to take this?
- 59:52Speaker 5: Are you want to like help other people get in
- 59:55Speaker 5: the game? I know you write books, like I know
- 59:58Speaker 5: you seem like the kind of person that's always thinking
- 1:00:00Speaker 5: the Hey, the next the next play? So what's the
- 1:00:03Speaker 5: what's the next play?
- 1:00:04Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 1:00:04Speaker 3: So I.
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: Help a lot of cats, man in terms of just
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: you know, talking in an unofficial way, like I don't
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: have them on contract or have them on you know,
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: no program or anything like that. But for me, the
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: way I view speaking like a cat can speak for
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: a long time, Like you look at less, Yeah that's
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: up there, that's brown, you know the og of it.
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: But he's up there and he's still able to do this,
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: you know, some of the cats Tony Robbins, you know,
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: e t like you can do this for a long time.
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: And so for me, I just want to be a
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: good steward of my gift, you know. And I feel
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: like a lot of times when when a cat speaks
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: like it's exhilarating you go, people are clapping for you,
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: people going crazy, Like a cat can get full of
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: itself real quick and prostitute that gift.
- 1:00:52Speaker 3: You know what I'm saying.
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: A cat can start the prostitute his gift and then
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: end up with a landslide. And so me being a
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: good steward of my gift making sure I'm using it
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: in the right way. And also man just growing and
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: scaling in different avenues right, whether it be universities, whether
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: it be corporate companies and things of that nature. Teaching
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: more like teaching is something that I have on my agenda,
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: Becoming a professor is something that I have on my agenda.
- 1:01:16Speaker 3: And so being a great steward of my gift something that's.
- 1:01:19Speaker 5: How does that? How does that? Actually? Because you brought
- 1:01:21Speaker 5: up a good point when Kanye said it's hard to
- 1:01:24Speaker 5: be humble when you're starting on a jumbo trunk and
- 1:01:26Speaker 5: it's like it's like, no, it's it's a crazy experience
- 1:01:30Speaker 5: when it's like, you know, thousands of people that's captivated
- 1:01:33Speaker 5: by you, and then everybody's trying to talk to you
- 1:01:36Speaker 5: after you get off stage, and you know what, I'm saying, like,
- 1:01:39Speaker 5: how is that for you? And how have you been
- 1:01:43Speaker 5: able to manage that and not let that, you know,
- 1:01:45Speaker 5: go to your head because it's like anything, it's like,
- 1:01:47Speaker 5: you know, it could definitely jade you. So how has
- 1:01:51Speaker 5: that been for you?
- 1:01:52Speaker 3: It's hard, man.
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: That's why, like I speak about locating that ego, and
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: the reason I say located is because like we can't
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: kill it, Like we all got ego, you know what
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: I'm saying, Like we can't kill it. We all got it.
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: It's a part of who we are. And so it's
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: that in different situations, how can we locate it? We
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: can walk out of the door right now and a
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: cat can say something crazy and that ego gonna flare
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: up immediately, like hey man, like it's on you know
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: what I'm saying. But when you locate it, nah, man,
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: I got kids, you know what I'm saying. My man
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: just talking reckless? He lost eat it, you know what
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: I'm saying, Locating that ego. When you get up there
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: and they clap for you, great job. You don't walk
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: out of the door and think you treat the god
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: that's driving you like trash. Right, the cat that hold
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: the door for you. You acting as if no, you're
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: supposed to hold the door for me.
- 1:02:38Speaker 6: Right.
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: It's cats that going rooms and they speak at people, right,
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: not speaking to people, because they feel as if once
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: they get out on the stage. A mistake that people make.
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: They think when they get invited to speak to a
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: certain group, certain company, right, that cat's just inviting you
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: to speak because one, yeah, they might want to learn
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: from you. Two yeah, they want to hear what you
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: got to say. But a lot of cats think they're important,
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying, Like, I'll never forget watching
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: the speaker. And I was in the room with one
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: of my dudes back up in Tennessee. It was in
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: the early years, and a dude speaks right, does his thing,
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: and my man is thinking, like, no, I'm the man,
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: I'm the most important dude in the room, right, And
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: the dude wanted to take a picture with him, one
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: of my older dudes, and you know, he took a
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: picture with him, but he kind of brushed him off,
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: and the dude was like, okay, And the dude he
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: brushed off.
- 1:03:23Speaker 3: My man owned fifty hotels, you know what I'm saying.
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: On fifty the whole and he just sitting there, he
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: chilling like he ain't trying to he ain't trying.
- 1:03:33Speaker 3: To be loud. My man owned fifty hotels and drive
- 1:03:35Speaker 3: a Hungda. You know what I'm saying.
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: So if you seeing your perception, you might be thinking
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: with your ego. If you popping and you got whatever
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: you got and you see my man. I remember the
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: first time I was sent to meeting and they was like, yay,
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: you on fifty. They telling me about him, and I'm
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: riding around a lot. I'm like, surely thinking like a
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: man got fifty of me up here in that thing.
- 1:04:00Speaker 6: I'm riding around.
- 1:04:01Speaker 3: Like I don't see it. What is he driving?
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: It's like you're in the Honda. I was like, oh,
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: my man, been here right? And I go meeting bro
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: the most chill, nicest person in the world. And I
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: think that's a lesson for a lot of cats to learn.
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: You know, even when you're doing what you're doing and
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: you're having a level of success, man, bravo, you know,
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: good riddance to you that things are going well. But
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: always understanding man, like being smart about your gift. Understanding
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: sometimes man, that new money loud, that old money quiet.
- 1:04:30Speaker 3: That's how you treat people.
- 1:04:32Speaker 4: It's like perfect, it's perfect timing because you said success.
- 1:04:36Speaker 4: So I wrote down another one of my favorite clodes.
- 1:04:38Speaker 4: It was like, it's easy to acquire access success and
- 1:04:41Speaker 4: not acquire fulfillment.
- 1:04:43Speaker 6: Absolutely, Can you talk about that? Yeah, man, Like that's
- 1:04:46Speaker 6: the word.
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: Yeah, man, that's success, you know, And it's all individual
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: to us all what that means to a certain cado
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: could be making whatever he makes, and that's cool.
- 1:04:56Speaker 3: A certain Cadog could be.
- 1:04:57Speaker 6: Man.
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: I get up and I go to work every day
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: and make it back home, take care of my children,
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: take them to the ball game, and saw individual. But
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: like we do work here at the home the shelter
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: downtown Atlanta with that Lanta mission, and you coming in
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: and you see the kids, and you serve the women
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: food and you talk to the youngins. You know what
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: I'm saying. The young adults, Man, what's up? Talk to
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: them about life and like I tell them all the time, bro,
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: like it ain't none wrong with being rich, Like, don't
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: let nobody trick you, right because you want to be rich,
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: you want to make money, like handle your business, do
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: your thing.
- 1:05:28Speaker 3: Ain't nothing wrong with that.
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: But I always tell them one of the easiest things
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: in the world is to acquire success and not capture fulfillment.
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: And you might have to navigate and it might take
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: you a while to get there. Take us all a while. Again,
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: we don't just get there overnight. But when you get
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: to a certain point, make sure you're doing something that
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: fulfills you. Because our work is going to take up
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: a lot of our lives. So if we're not doing
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: something that's fulfilling us, you can have success. And if
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: you're not careful, you can become a public success or
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: behind closed doors. Your private failure not because you don't
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: have the skill set and talents, but it's gotten you
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: to a place that skill sets and your talents can't
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: sustain you. So making sure you're fulfilled while you're capturing
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: success is important.
- 1:06:06Speaker 6: You know the inspiration.
- 1:06:09Speaker 5: I have one last question for you. How do you
- 1:06:12Speaker 5: I was just thinking about this as far as the
- 1:06:13Speaker 5: public speaking realm, you personally, how do you market yourself
- 1:06:19Speaker 5: to these companies or the companies just come to you
- 1:06:21Speaker 5: like how's that? Because in my brain I'm like, how
- 1:06:25Speaker 5: would you know somebody wants you to speak? I guess
- 1:06:27Speaker 5: once you get to a certain level, people is calling
- 1:06:29Speaker 5: you like now at this point in your career, But
- 1:06:32Speaker 5: did you ever at any point market yourself to organizations, companies,
- 1:06:37Speaker 5: sports teams, like hey, I do public speaking and or
- 1:06:40Speaker 5: was it always them just coming to you? Nah?
- 1:06:43Speaker 3: Early on, I partnered.
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: I partnered with a lot of agencies and speaking bureaus
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: that I felt had the same values and morals that
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: I had, Like I went to meet with a lot
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: of them, and they're all over the country. You got
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: bureaus here in Atlanta, Nashville, New York, California, Chicago, and
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: you talk talk to them and you tell them your goals,
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: your dreams, your aspirations, and some cats are going to
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: be like cool, that works, or some cats is going
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: to be like nah, that's not for us. And so
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: I partnered with a lot of them, and they will
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: put me in these different rooms. And a thing that
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: I was aiming for was when I did a conference,
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: whether it was an education, sports, corporate, I wanted it
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: to be more so of a national conference. So it's
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: people from all over the world. And so when they come,
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: even though I came to serve this group, like, it's
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: going to be people that's going to leave and go
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: back to different markets that's going to probably follow up
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: and hit me up and say, man, I love what
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: you did at that education conference. I love what you
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: did at that corporate conference. And then when I go
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: speak for them. The way I built my audience was
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: when I would follow up with them, I would say, hey, man,
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: if you enjoy what you experienced this is in the
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: early days. If you enjoyed what you experienced, or there
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: are three companies or three other groups that you will
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: refer me to that you think could benefit from my services.
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: And from that point I continued to build up my
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: clientele and manage it.
- 1:08:00Speaker 5: Now that's so key because I'm on financial advisor and
- 1:08:03Speaker 5: when I was like in my early stages of trying
- 1:08:05Speaker 5: to build my financial planning book, That's one thing that
- 1:08:08Speaker 5: they really taught me was like referrals. Either you're going
- 1:08:10Speaker 5: cold call or you're gonna get referrals. And me like
- 1:08:13Speaker 5: cold calling, Like I rob a bank before I cold call,
- 1:08:16Speaker 5: Like I just I hate cold calling, you know what
- 1:08:18Speaker 5: I'm saying, Like it's just it's just the worst thing
- 1:08:22Speaker 5: in the world. So I'm like, if I'm gonna be successful,
- 1:08:23Speaker 5: I have to find a way to get referrals. And
- 1:08:27Speaker 5: I had developed a system in place where I used
- 1:08:29Speaker 5: to have a sheet or like five names on it.
- 1:08:32Speaker 5: So the first five names was friends and family. So
- 1:08:35Speaker 5: after the end of the closing the situation, because the
- 1:08:37Speaker 5: worst thing you can do is close a deal and
- 1:08:39Speaker 5: that's it because then you get paid and that's now
- 1:08:41Speaker 5: you got to try to find something, and that's like,
- 1:08:43Speaker 5: that's the worst thing in the world. So I used
- 1:08:44Speaker 5: to ask them like, who do you know that can
- 1:08:47Speaker 5: benefit and then a lot of times they'll say like, well,
- 1:08:50Speaker 5: I'm not really sure. I don't know. Then the second
- 1:08:52Speaker 5: half of the sheet was like, all right, just had
- 1:08:54Speaker 5: a kid, just lost their jobs. So now I'm not
- 1:08:57Speaker 5: asking you randomly, I'm specifically saying like all right, these
- 1:09:00Speaker 5: are the criteria, and it's like you know what I'm saying.
- 1:09:02Speaker 5: I'm like, I'm not leaving without three names.
- 1:09:06Speaker 4: This is a true story, Like this is a fact,
- 1:09:09Speaker 4: Like he came to my house with this. I'm looking
- 1:09:11Speaker 4: at him likeyo, shy, you know the same people I know. Bro, Like,
- 1:09:13Speaker 4: I don't know what you want me to do. He's like, nah,
- 1:09:16Speaker 4: think of your cowork is it?
- 1:09:17Speaker 3: Bro?
- 1:09:17Speaker 6: I'm like, all right, man, I get it.
- 1:09:20Speaker 5: Because you don't know unless you. And I think everybody
- 1:09:24Speaker 5: at some point in time should take a sales job,
- 1:09:26Speaker 5: a commission based job, because it teaches you to be
- 1:09:29Speaker 5: a real wolf out here. And unless you have never
- 1:09:33Speaker 5: been able to do that, you don't fully appreciate the
- 1:09:36Speaker 5: value of referrals because most people you don't need a referral.
- 1:09:40Speaker 5: But then you realize referrals a life and everything helps you.
- 1:09:42Speaker 5: So not even with the podcast. It's like I might ask, yo,
- 1:09:46Speaker 5: can you introduce me to this person? And that's how
- 1:09:48Speaker 5: we get a lot of our guests. The same type
- 1:09:51Speaker 5: of system as referrals, right, And it's like, once you
- 1:09:53Speaker 5: learn one system, you could put it in place for everything.
- 1:09:56Speaker 5: So that's dope. And I didn't know that it was
- 1:09:58Speaker 5: actually agencies. I guess it's like booking agents. So that
- 1:10:02Speaker 5: makes you like, that makes a lot more sense.
- 1:10:03Speaker 7: Now.
- 1:10:03Speaker 5: It's like, all right, they vet you out, they believe
- 1:10:06Speaker 5: your story, you might be good, and then once you
- 1:10:09Speaker 5: actually get big enough you don't need that anymore.
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: Ye go independent. But also you can meet some of
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: them cats man, and they'll go crazy for you.
- 1:10:16Speaker 3: Man. Cats will get you a lot of opportunities.
- 1:10:18Speaker 5: Like what's some of the names of the best companies.
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: So you got executive speakers bureau, you got athletes and
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: sports entertainment you got, man, you got you got big
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: speak out in California.
- 1:10:33Speaker 5: I guess it was a whole industry. Like a ton
- 1:10:36Speaker 5: of them, man, that represent public speakers, a ton of them.
- 1:10:38Speaker 6: So public speaking is your thing?
- 1:10:40Speaker 4: Now, Well, what's your relationship with the thing you grew
- 1:10:44Speaker 4: up loving and dedicating the first twenty years of your
- 1:10:48Speaker 4: life with.
- 1:10:48Speaker 6: What's your relationship with football? Still follow it? Still love it?
- 1:10:51Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: Yeah, I love it, man. And I do work with
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: the NFL. You work with n Cuba, You work with
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: a lot of schools in groups in terms of colleges.
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: So I'm very close to it because it's something that
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: I care about, you know. And like I've been in
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: the NFL teams when you know, I was send in
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: the back and they got several different speakers and they
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: got the financial literacy guy coming up, they got the
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: tax guy coming up, you know, they got the state
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: planning guy coming up to speak, and it's optional, you know,
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: And I'm there and I'm speaking after one of these dudes.
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: I've been in there when cats would leave the room.
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying and then you see a
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: cat three years later going through it on TV losing everything,
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: and you think back, like, man, my man, weren't even
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: in the meeting, but the dude was present about this stuff,
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying, And so being in there man,
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: and being passionate about you know, just some of the
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: rates and the statistics of athletes. You know how cats
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: get finished with the game and divorce rate or you know,
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: the bankruptcy rate, whatever the case may be. And so
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: you know, being locked into that and making sure I
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: touch on all those aspects as well.
- 1:11:56Speaker 3: It's something that's very important to me.
- 1:12:00Speaker 5: And a pleasure, brother, thank you for joining us. Definitely
- 1:12:03Speaker 5: a lot of free game, a lot of inspiration, motivation,
- 1:12:06Speaker 5: and like I said, I feel like everybody should share
- 1:12:10Speaker 5: their journey. And it's like, no matter what the platform is,
- 1:12:13Speaker 5: you might share it with ten people on Instagram, you
- 1:12:15Speaker 5: might share with a million people in the best selling book.
- 1:12:17Speaker 5: But it's like, never discount your worth body amount of
- 1:12:22Speaker 5: people that are consuming it, because that stops a lot
- 1:12:24Speaker 5: of people too where they're like, only got ten likes
- 1:12:26Speaker 5: on my posts, Like you know what I'm saying, but
- 1:12:28Speaker 5: you never know that one like might have changed somebody's life,
- 1:12:32Speaker 5: like you might have stopped somebody from committing suicide. You
- 1:12:34Speaker 5: never know, Like you know what I'm saying, Like, if
- 1:12:36Speaker 5: you look at it from that standpoint, it was worth it.
- 1:12:38Speaker 5: It's not about like the millions of people that'll come
- 1:12:41Speaker 5: if if it's God's playing. But you know, I just
- 1:12:45Speaker 5: feel like, you know, a lot of times people even myself,
- 1:12:47Speaker 5: like I've been wanting to do what we do now
- 1:12:49Speaker 5: as far as but I was just discouraged because I'm like,
- 1:12:52Speaker 5: who cares about it? Who cares about financial literacy? Like
- 1:12:54Speaker 5: you know what I'm saying, Like people are looking at
- 1:12:56Speaker 5: me like it's corny, Da da da da. And then
- 1:12:57Speaker 5: it's like if I would have started five years ago,
- 1:12:59Speaker 5: we would have been wait even further than we are now.
- 1:13:02Speaker 5: So I just think that stories like yours is just
- 1:13:06Speaker 5: amazing from so many different standpoints. So thank you once
- 1:13:09Speaker 5: again for joining us. What would you like to tell
- 1:13:12Speaker 5: a public any Venure's book Social Media Handles all that now?
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: First off, man, I want to think thank you both
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: man just for the opportunity. You know, I want to
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: thank you all for your platform and y'all add a
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: lot of value to just the community, saying, it's been
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: catch that I don't have to sit down and watch
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: y'all interviews when y'all talk about certain things when it
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: came to financial literacy because where we come from, like me, specifically,
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: a lot of things I didn't learn, Like nobody passed
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: down certain knowledge bases to me about certain things, Like
- 1:13:43Speaker 1: when I got out of college, nobody told me how
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: to get a house. I had to figure that out
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: on my wife. My wife lost both her parents when
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: she was seven. We had to figure that out. We
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: had to figure out accounts, We had to figure out taxes,
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: like I remember the first time I paid two hundred
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: and fifty thousand in taxes. You know what I'm saying,
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: And my man, my CPA was looking at me like
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: you got it, Yeah, I got it.
- 1:14:10Speaker 3: Ain't now you're playing but having to learn real ze man,
- 1:14:15Speaker 3: you know what I'm saying.
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: And having to go through that trial and error and
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: after that, you know, waking up and paying attention and
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: understanding how to get in better positions so you know,
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: some of these things won't have to happen. And so
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: for y'all to do what y'all do, and the way
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: that y'all do it, man. It's an honor and it's
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: a privilege to everybody out there. Man, keep pressing, keep
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: your head up, man, stay focused.
- 1:14:36Speaker 5: I appreciate you. I appreciate that. How can they follow
- 1:14:38Speaker 5: you on social media?
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: Inky Johnson Motivate on Instagram, Inky Johnson on the other
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: social media platforms. It's just Inky Johnson Motivate because a

- 1:14:51Speaker 3: Yeah, wait, hacked me man.

- 1:15:25Speaker 1: But you ain't gotta be a huntred from my book, man,
