- 0:00Welcome to Kid Cast Daily, where we bring news, trivia, fun
- 0:04facts, and more just for curious kids like you.
- 0:07Today we're traveling way, way back in time, so grab your
- 0:10imaginary time machines and get ready because we're about to
- 0:14explore one of the coolest mysteries in all of science, the
- 0:17extinction of the dinosaurs. Imagine stepping outside and
- 0:20seeing a world filled with giant creatures, some as tall as
- 0:24houses, some with long necks, some with sharp teeth, and
- 0:28others with bumpy armor. That was Earth around 66,000,000
- 0:31years ago, during the time of the dinosaurs.
- 0:34Dinosaurs ruled the land, the sky, and even the water.
- 0:38They were the superstars of their time.
- 0:40But then something incredible happened.
- 0:42Almost all the dinosaurs disappeared.
- 0:45Poof, gone. It's one of the greatest
- 0:47mysteries of all time. So what happened to them?
- 0:50Let's find out together. First, let's talk about what
- 0:54extinction means. Extinction is when a kind of
- 0:57animal or plant disappears from the earth forever.
- 0:59It means there are no more left. Dinosaurs aren't the only
- 1:03animals to go extinct, but their extinction is super famous
- 1:06because they were so big and amazing.
- 1:08Now scientists call the time when the dinosaurs disappeared
- 1:12the Cretaceous Paleogene extinction event.
- 1:14Whoa, that's a big name. Let's just call it the Big Dino
- 1:18Wipeout. This event happened about
- 1:2066,000,000 years ago, and it didn't just affect dinosaurs.
- 1:24Lots of other animals and plants went extinct too.
- 1:27Some scientists say that as many as three out of every four
- 1:30living things on Earth vanished during the big Dino wipeout.
- 1:33But why did this happen? Well, scientists have a few
- 1:37ideas, but one is the most popular.
- 1:40Picture this. You're playing outside and
- 1:42suddenly a huge fiery rock falls from the sky.
- 1:46That's what happened to Earth. A giant asteroid, which is a
- 1:49huge space rock, crashed into our planet.
- 1:52Scientists think this asteroid was as big as a mountain, maybe
- 1:56even bigger. It hit a place that we now call
- 1:58the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. The spot where it landed is
- 2:02called the Cheek Shaloob Crater. If you could see it from space,
- 2:06you'd notice a giant dent in the Earth.
- 2:08When the asteroid hit, it was like the biggest explosion ever.
- 2:12Imagine all the fireworks you've ever seen going off at once, but
- 2:15a million times bigger. The impact sent dust, ash, and
- 2:19tiny rocks flying up into the sky, covering the whole planet
- 2:23in a thick dark cloud. It got so dark that the sun's
- 2:26light couldn't reach the ground. Imagine having to wear
- 2:29sunglasses even at lunchtime because it's so gloomy.
- 2:32Without sunlight, plants couldn't grow.
- 2:35And if plants can't grow, the plant eating dinosaurs like
- 2:38Triceratops and Brachiosaurus had nothing to eat.
- 2:42And if the plant eaters disappeared, then the meat
- 2:45eating dinosaurs like Tea Rex and Velociraptor didn't have any
- 2:49food either. It was like a giant game of
- 2:52dominoes. When one falls, the rest start
- 2:54to fall too. But wait, there's more.
- 2:57The blast from the asteroid was so hot that it started wildfires
- 3:01all over the world. The air got smoky and the
- 3:04temperature dropped, making it really cold, almost like a
- 3:07sudden winter. This impact winter lasted for
- 3:10months, maybe even years. Many animals and plants just
- 3:14couldn't survive in those harsh conditions.
- 3:16Now, here's a fun fact. Did you know that scientists
- 3:19have actually found a thin layer of special rock all over the
- 3:22world that was made at the time of the Dino Wipeout?
- 3:25This rock has a lot of Iridium in it, which is a rare metal
- 3:28usually found in asteroids. It's like a secret clue left
- 3:31behind from the day the asteroid hit.
- 3:33But some scientists think there were other things happening too.
- 3:37Around the same time, there were massive volcanoes erupting in a
- 3:40place called India. These volcanoes were so big they
- 3:43covered the land in lava and sent even more dust and gas into
- 3:47the air. It's kind of like Earth was
- 3:49having a really bad day. Asteroids from above and
- 3:52volcanoes from below. So which was it?
- 3:55Asteroid or volcanoes? Most scientists think the
- 3:58asteroid was the main reason, but the volcanoes didn't help.
- 4:02It was a 1-2 punch that changed the world forever.
- 4:05You might be wondering, if the dinosaurs all disappeared, how
- 4:09do we know they ever existed? That's where fossils come in.
- 4:12Fossils are like nature's time capsules.
- 4:15They're pieces of bones, teeth, or even footprints that have
- 4:18turned to stone over millions of years.
- 4:21By studying fossils, scientists called paleontologists can
- 4:24figure out what dinosaurs looked like, what they ate, and even
- 4:28how they moved. It's a little like being a
- 4:30detective, but instead of solving crimes, they're solving
- 4:33the mysteries of the past. Here's another cool did you know
- 4:37moment Not all dinosaurs went extinct.
- 4:40Wait, what? That's right, scientists believe
- 4:43that birds, the ones you see in your backyard or at the park,
- 4:46are actually modern day dinosaurs.
- 4:49So the next time you see a Robin or a pigeon, you can imagine it
- 4:53as a tiny feathery dinosaur. How cool is that?
- 4:56After the big Dino wipeout, Earth was a very different
- 4:59place. With the dinosaurs gone, new
- 5:02animals started to take over. Mammals, which were small and
- 5:05furry at the time, began to grow bigger and try new things.
- 5:09Eventually, some of those mammals became the animals we
- 5:12know today, like elephants, whales, and yes, even us humans.
- 5:17Let's take a quick recap of what we've learned today.
- 5:20Dinosaurs ruled the Earth for millions of years, but about
- 5:2366,000,000 years ago, something dramatic happened.
- 5:27A giant asteroid crashed into Earth, causing darkness,
- 5:30wildfires, and a long cold impact winter.
- 5:33This made it really hard for plants and animals to survive,
- 5:37and most dinosaurs went extinct. At the same time, giant
- 5:41volcanoes were erupting, making things even worse.
- 5:44But not all dinosaurs vanished. Birds are their feathery
- 5:47descendants, still living with us today.
- 5:49Isn't it amazing how one event can change the world so much?
- 5:53The extinction of the dinosaurs was sad for them, but it opened
- 5:56up new opportunities for other animals, including mammals like
- 6:00us. It also gives us a chance to
- 6:02learn about our planet's history and to imagine what life was
- 6:05like long before people came along.
- 6:07So the next time you see a bird, look at a fossil, or even just
- 6:11watch a dinosaur movie, remember the incredible story of the
- 6:15dinosaurs and their mysterious extinction.
- 6:17Who knows what other secrets are waiting to be discovered right
- 6:20under our feet? Thanks for joining us on Kid
- 6:23Cast Daily. Keep asking questions, keep
- 6:25exploring, and remember the world is full of amazing stories
- 6:29just waiting for curious kids like you to discover them.
- 6:32See you next time.
