- 0:08Speaker 1: Hell, Hey, Angel fans, and welcome back to Halo Territory
- 0:11Speaker 1: with Mike D. Giovanna, former Early Times Baseball writer and
- 0:14Speaker 1: host of the show, joined by Mark Trumbo, the former
- 0:17Speaker 1: Angel slugger and regular co host, and back with us
- 0:20Speaker 1: today for his regular Hope Well, I hope it's a
- 0:22Speaker 1: regular stint on HT Sam Baum and the Athletic. How
- 0:26Speaker 1: are we doing today? Guys?
- 0:28Speaker 2: Great?
- 0:28Speaker 1: Are you? I'm good? Mark Hope trying to direct. Mark
- 0:32Speaker 1: looks very stoic today. I think he's uh.
- 0:34Speaker 3: No, No, Mark, Mark's ready to go. We got a
- 0:37Speaker 3: right to cover. What are we talking about? Mike Well?
- 0:40Speaker 1: Sam Uh Sam posted a wild story this morning on
- 0:43Speaker 1: the Athletic website about an Angel scout who called himself
- 0:49Speaker 1: the baseball spy and he was fired early this season
- 0:52Speaker 1: four Well, spying on baseball. We'll get to that later
- 0:56Speaker 1: in the show, but first we have to talk about
- 0:58Speaker 1: Monday night's game and a conversation we had with interim
- 1:00Speaker 1: GM John Mozeylock before it. Well, the Angels were zero
- 1:05Speaker 1: to forty nine when trailing after eight innings before Monday,
- 1:09Speaker 1: when they staged an improbable rally two run rally in
- 1:13Speaker 1: the bottom of the ninth for a three to two
- 1:14Speaker 1: win over the Saint Louis Cardinals. The rally included a
- 1:18Speaker 1: score tying RBI double by Von Grissel and two hit
- 1:21Speaker 1: by pitches, one by Jorge Solaire and the other by
- 1:26Speaker 1: Joe Adele with the bases load at the force in
- 1:29Speaker 1: the tying run. It was the sixth time an Angels
- 1:32Speaker 1: franchise history they had a walk off hit by pitch,
- 1:35Speaker 1: and it also gave the Angels, I should do the
- 1:38Speaker 1: drum roll here, their first two game win streak in July. Well. Wow,
- 1:45Speaker 1: I don't know what's going to happen these last two
- 1:47Speaker 1: plus months of the season, but is this at least
- 1:50Speaker 1: the kind of win that can catapult them toward a
- 1:53Speaker 1: more respectable finish to the season that was as improbable
- 1:56Speaker 1: as it gets?
- 1:58Speaker 2: No, I mean what whatever?
- 2:01Speaker 1: Right?
- 2:01Speaker 2: I mean, you're kind of at that, You're kind of
- 2:03Speaker 2: at the point of the season where it's like, okay,
- 2:05Speaker 2: I mean that, you know, the Cardinals had a full
- 2:07Speaker 2: on riley of Brian had a full on a implosion
- 2:10Speaker 2: there and you know, yeah, yeah who also, I believe
- 2:15Speaker 2: had a pretty significant hit by pitching that All Star Game. Uh,
- 2:19Speaker 2: Junior Cambon Aro. So yeah, you know, just you sit there,
- 2:23Speaker 2: take your take your hit by pitches and you get
- 2:25Speaker 2: to win. I mean I would, I just I'm not.
- 2:27Speaker 2: I think we're at the point of the year where
- 2:28Speaker 2: it's like, you know, it's like you of course you
- 2:30Speaker 2: rather win the game than lose. I think you know,
- 2:32Speaker 2: you're you're basically trying to avoid one hundred losses. So
- 2:35Speaker 2: these are the margin wins and wins and losses that
- 2:37Speaker 2: maybe will determine that. But ultimately, what's the difference. I mean,
- 2:41Speaker 2: it's a win or a loss, And you know, I
- 2:43Speaker 2: think it's just another season in which the you know,
- 2:47Speaker 2: any playoff hopes or anything is kind of evaporated by
- 2:50Speaker 2: the time you get to late July. So it's it's
- 2:51Speaker 2: what it is, you know.
- 2:52Speaker 1: Yeah, Mark, any momentum to be had from from a
- 2:55Speaker 1: win like that, I.
- 2:58Speaker 3: Don't know, to be honest, but maybe maybe they could
- 3:03Speaker 3: do some big things that It's the type of question
- 3:06Speaker 3: that as a as a player, I would I would
- 3:08Speaker 3: give you probably push on the room mushroom program feeds
- 3:12Speaker 3: your blank and keep you in the dark. But yeah,
- 3:15Speaker 3: Obrian more than anything had that deer in the headlights. Look,
- 3:19Speaker 3: he's been well terrible since April twenty fifth, Sam stole
- 3:23Speaker 3: some of my talking points, but he said there five
- 3:27Speaker 3: to six ERA since then, he drilled Cam and Aro
- 3:31Speaker 3: looks totally out of sorts. He did have a nice
- 3:35Speaker 3: bat well, he was the one pitching against Trout that
- 3:38Speaker 3: that did look sharp, and then it just fell apart. Mike,
- 3:41Speaker 3: did you think the Angels offense like came to life?
- 3:44Speaker 3: Was that the the big sturge that we're looking for.
- 3:48Speaker 1: I did not. I would not agree with that. They
- 3:50Speaker 1: had six hits. At least they didn't strike out a
- 3:53Speaker 1: million times, which is a positive. You know, one thing
- 3:56Speaker 1: in that ninth thing that really surprised me O'Brien seemed
- 3:58Speaker 1: to be having going back to All Star Game too,
- 4:01Speaker 1: a lot of trouble pitching to a right handed batters
- 4:03Speaker 1: for some reason. And I know some guys right handers
- 4:06Speaker 1: will you know, leave us in general, will lose the
- 4:09Speaker 1: release points. But why the heck did they walk Josh Lowe,
- 4:13Speaker 1: He's a left handed hitter to load the bases for Adele,
- 4:16Speaker 1: who hit a home run early in the game. That's
- 4:18Speaker 1: what really surprised me about that hitting.
- 4:22Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, go ahead, man decisions. Sorry, we'll cut the cross,
- 4:29Speaker 3: but uh, there's been some odd ones too.
- 4:32Speaker 4: A J.
- 4:32Speaker 3: Hinch the other the other day chose to pitch to Guzband
- 4:35Speaker 3: over Ohapi with the base open, and then you know,
- 4:39Speaker 3: last night walking Josh Lowe, who we've talked about, he
- 4:43Speaker 3: did hit a kind of a line drive into left
- 4:44Speaker 3: field earlier, but I don't know if that's simply just
- 4:48Speaker 3: kind of that robotical style of Okay, he's right handed pitcher,
- 4:51Speaker 3: left handed batter. O'Brien quite honestly kind of looks like
- 4:54Speaker 3: he has the thing. Oh. I mean, he's hit eight
- 4:59Speaker 3: batters and last twenty seven innings pitch so not including
- 5:03Speaker 3: the All Star Game if you're a rightyout and one
- 5:07Speaker 3: thing the Angels are doing a lot of one one
- 5:10Speaker 3: hitter in particular, is crowding the plate like nobody's business,
- 5:14Speaker 3: where you know, getting brushed back on pitches that are
- 5:17Speaker 3: not only not off the plate in they're well they're
- 5:20Speaker 3: on the plate in the middle third almost and just
- 5:22Speaker 3: kind of falling backwards. You guys can try and figure
- 5:24Speaker 3: out who, but you know, that kind of comes with
- 5:27Speaker 3: the territory when you when you're right on top of it.
- 5:30Speaker 1: Yeah, maybe O'Brien, shav a little conversation with Brian Zephyr
- 5:33Speaker 1: John while he's in town. He seemed to have the
- 5:36Speaker 1: same problem earlier in this season. Sam, you were going
- 5:38Speaker 1: to say about the Josh Low decision, No.
- 5:41Speaker 2: I totally agree and make you know. I was sitting there, like,
- 5:44Speaker 2: why are they walking him? I understand, like the you know,
- 5:46Speaker 2: the base some of the there's some conventional wisdom and
- 5:50Speaker 2: walking and me set up a force at every base
- 5:51Speaker 2: and double play with one out, But just given where
- 5:54Speaker 2: that guy was on the mound and his inability to
- 5:57Speaker 2: throw a strike, I mean, it was just it was
- 5:58Speaker 2: beyond risky. And then he didn't even I don't think
- 6:00Speaker 2: he was even in the realm of the strike zone
- 6:02Speaker 2: against Adel And yeah, I mean, I mean the thing
- 6:06Speaker 2: I guess is I guess that's a baseball thing. We're
- 6:08Speaker 2: not supposed to say the word, but yeah, that guy
- 6:10Speaker 2: looked like he just was is mentally unable to do it.
- 6:13Speaker 2: But he's had a good He's got like twenty five
- 6:15Speaker 2: days this year's you know, he's done. He's been able
- 6:18Speaker 2: to get through those moments even if he hasn't been great.
- 6:21Speaker 2: But it was, you know that that was not a
- 6:23Speaker 2: good showing. And I agree with you on the goose.
- 6:25Speaker 2: I felt the same way about that that decision by
- 6:27Speaker 2: a J And I think some teams don't know exactly
- 6:30Speaker 2: how to evaluate some of these lower third of the
- 6:32Speaker 2: order angels, hitters maybe, or just you know, are not
- 6:35Speaker 2: feel like I look at Denzer Guzman is a much
- 6:38Speaker 2: bigger threat than Logan Happy at the moment, and I'm
- 6:42Speaker 2: surprised that that's how you're sitting see it that way.
- 6:45Speaker 1: Mark, You ever get a case of the hips in
- 6:46Speaker 1: baseball or to playing first base, and then the corner
- 6:49Speaker 1: outfields spots kind of shield you from anything like that.
- 6:54Speaker 3: I never dealt with it personally. I've seen it many times,
- 6:57Speaker 3: though it's tough to watch going through. I don't know,
- 6:59Speaker 3: I don't think this, I you know, it's speculating something
- 7:02Speaker 3: doesn't look right and he I mean the broadcast barely
- 7:07Speaker 3: caught that last pitch he through. I mean, when you
- 7:10Speaker 3: talk about slowing the game down, that is not what.
- 7:12Speaker 1: It looks like.
- 7:13Speaker 3: I mean that was destined for failure. I don't for
- 7:16Speaker 3: a thirty one year old, it looked like he kind
- 7:20Speaker 3: of lost the composure and they just kind of resigned
- 7:22Speaker 3: to the resigned to his fate. That they were going
- 7:25Speaker 3: to somehow lose that game. I didn't see a lot
- 7:26Speaker 3: of battling going on there for them. But credit to
- 7:29Speaker 3: the Angels, they Von Grissom especially get getting that big
- 7:33Speaker 3: hit that Kurtzuzuki was talking about that. That is a
- 7:36Speaker 3: big hit in a big situation.
- 7:38Speaker 1: Yeah, the Adele at bat, he threw three balls to
- 7:41Speaker 1: start that at bat. I don't think one of them
- 7:43Speaker 1: was even close to the strike zone. Almost surprised. I
- 7:46Speaker 1: don't know, I can't remember if anybody's warming up, but
- 7:48Speaker 1: I might have just yanked him at that point and
- 7:50Speaker 1: take my chances with another guy we mentioned, Joe Adell.
- 7:54Speaker 1: Joe snapped a twenty four at bat hitless skid with
- 7:58Speaker 1: a solo homer in the third inning Monday night. Let's
- 8:01Speaker 1: hear a little bit about what he had to say
- 8:03Speaker 1: after that game.
- 8:05Speaker 5: Pitch was that, what does that mean?
- 8:07Speaker 1: The best time you can get by a pitch?
- 8:09Speaker 6: Yeah, that's one of those you don't feel right there,
- 8:11Speaker 6: any hit by a pitch with the walk off, right,
- 8:12Speaker 6: So yeah, good stuff.
- 8:15Speaker 5: Just you you had a rough FIEW week or so,
- 8:17Speaker 5: I mean to have a homer and something like this,
- 8:19Speaker 5: like how much kind of relief is this.
- 8:22Speaker 6: Yeah, it's been a secret. I've been struggling and you know,
- 8:24Speaker 6: the past week, but just getting back to kind of
- 8:26Speaker 6: seeing pitches and not trying to do too much. I
- 8:28Speaker 6: feel like my first advice was kind of example of
- 8:31Speaker 6: just waiting it out and finding a pitch and really
- 8:33Speaker 6: just tried to do that throughout the course of the game.
- 8:35Speaker 6: So good things happen. Obviously we ended up on top, I.
- 8:38Speaker 1: Think with Chrison's double dependence at that. All update is
- 8:41Speaker 1: that was huge.
- 8:42Speaker 6: Just capitalize on a really elite level sinker like that,
- 8:45Speaker 6: and to go gi other way at that. You know,
- 8:48Speaker 6: obviously he's shooting for ground balls, so to be able
- 8:50Speaker 6: to you know, get him up in there and get
- 8:52Speaker 6: us put us in that situation. I thought it was
- 8:54Speaker 6: out really, you know, really just kept the momentum going
- 8:58Speaker 6: and we got it done.
- 8:59Speaker 1: That goes pitching. You might hold you guys in the game.
- 9:02Speaker 1: I'm sorry, how good it's a pitching tonight. Holding the
- 9:05Speaker 1: game tonight?
- 9:05Speaker 6: It was great. Soriano was. I mean, he just kept
- 9:09Speaker 6: eating inns and doing what he does. It was very
- 9:11Speaker 6: impressive and you know, the terror coming in and for
- 9:14Speaker 6: me and I mean it was really good stuff all
- 9:15Speaker 6: the way around, and they threw the ball well on
- 9:17Speaker 6: their side, really well. So it was definitely gonna come
- 9:20Speaker 6: down to something like this, and we came out on top.
- 9:23Speaker 1: You broke your back right before the pitch you hit
- 9:25Speaker 1: the home run. I believe pick up somebody else's bat
- 9:28Speaker 1: by any chance or.
- 9:30Speaker 6: No, it was. It was actually I had two different
- 9:33Speaker 6: types of bats out there than I had, and they
- 9:35Speaker 6: picked the wrong one at first, and then I said,
- 9:36Speaker 6: now I gotta go get the other one, so pick
- 9:40Speaker 6: the right one.
- 9:40Speaker 4: I guess.
- 9:41Speaker 7: So thanks Jore.
- 9:44Speaker 1: Now, Mark, on our last show, you had mentioned Joe
- 9:48Speaker 1: Joe's stance not being right. Did you see any kind
- 9:51Speaker 1: of adjustment with him Monday night.
- 9:54Speaker 3: From that aspect? No, it was he's gonna I mean
- 9:59Speaker 3: this thing that he's obviously worked on. And what he
- 10:02Speaker 3: did do a good job of, like you said, was
- 10:03Speaker 3: getting a pitch he could handle, hanging curveball from the
- 10:07Speaker 3: Cardinals starter lady, who was actually outstanding, and you talk
- 10:12Speaker 3: about stuff. Plus if you guys are tired of hearing
- 10:15Speaker 3: about it, let us know in the comments. But the
- 10:18Speaker 3: guy had four pitches that grated out extremely well. Uh
- 10:22Speaker 3: one fifteen, so one hundred is I think baseline, whereas
- 10:25Speaker 3: Soriano really only had two pitches that were His best
- 10:28Speaker 3: pitch was actually his four seamer and his curveball was
- 10:31Speaker 3: a little bit above. But as far as Joe goes,
- 10:34Speaker 3: I think it is a situation where a lot of
- 10:37Speaker 3: the it's the Angels hitters as a whole getting a
- 10:40Speaker 3: pitch they can they can handle. They swing a lot
- 10:43Speaker 3: and part of the time or a lot of the time,
- 10:47Speaker 3: those pitches are especially the ones down in the way,
- 10:49Speaker 3: which other teams have realized they're not a strength. The
- 10:52Speaker 3: Angels hitters had a hack at it, and if you're
- 10:55Speaker 3: going to hack at it, I think directionally, you want
- 10:57Speaker 3: to make sure that you know you're not trying to
- 10:59Speaker 3: hit it down the third baseline. That's not the greatest strategy.
- 11:02Speaker 3: But Joe caught one of the few hanging pitches that
- 11:05Speaker 3: lay he made and deposited another nice single later on too.
- 11:09Speaker 3: So that's the type of thing that can spark editor
- 11:12Speaker 3: to go on a streak.
- 11:15Speaker 1: All right, We're going to take a break for a
- 11:17Speaker 1: word from our sponsors, and when we come back, we'll
- 11:19Speaker 1: talk about John Moseylock's interview with us before Monday Night. Scam.

- 12:26Speaker 1: Hey, welcome back to Halo Territory with Sam Blum Mark
- 12:28Speaker 1: Trumbo and Mike Dgievana. Well, we met Memo before Monday
- 12:32Speaker 1: night's game. When asked if he feels he will have
- 12:35Speaker 1: autonomy to make deals before the trade deadline August third,
- 12:40Speaker 1: he said, quote, I definitely feel like mister Marino is
- 12:43Speaker 1: intrusting me to get this right, and that's certainly what
- 12:46Speaker 1: I'm going to try to do. A number of other
- 12:48Speaker 1: topics came up during about a ten minute conversation, so
- 12:52Speaker 1: let's have a listen to at least one excerpt from that.
- 12:56Speaker 1: Tuck is very strong.
- 13:01Speaker 5: Yeah, I've enjoyed this experience. Do you think you can
- 13:05Speaker 5: get to twenty seven angels to be contvers.
- 13:10Speaker 2: Why?
- 13:12Speaker 5: That is a I think that's a challenging task. Can
- 13:19Speaker 5: I answer that like a week?
- 13:22Speaker 1: Okay?
- 13:24Speaker 2: All wow?
- 13:24Speaker 5: Yeah, I just felt like, yeah, I'm working through some
- 13:27Speaker 5: things to, like, you understand how to get there, and I.
- 13:30Speaker 1: Don't know.
- 13:32Speaker 3: How important is it?
- 13:33Speaker 2: Just like to be honest about that, you know, with yourself,
- 13:35Speaker 2: with the organization, right because I feel like this is
- 13:38Speaker 2: just having been here for a while, I thought it's
- 13:39Speaker 2: always been a challenge, like the idea of rebuilding or
- 13:42Speaker 2: acknowledging that it's going to take a little while it's
- 13:44Speaker 2: just not something you hear very often.
- 13:46Speaker 5: But having patience in regard to what we're trying to
- 13:49Speaker 5: accomplish is it's going to be needed. Like that doesn't
- 13:51Speaker 5: mean you can't win a few more baseball yeah right,
- 13:54Speaker 5: Like even when you just decide to sect this year,
- 13:58Speaker 5: Yeah right, what's their one run loss record?
- 14:02Speaker 1: But what.
- 14:06Speaker 3: Right?
- 14:06Speaker 1: Exactly right?
- 14:07Speaker 5: And so like you know, like it doesn't take much
- 14:09Speaker 5: to just change that. Now if you run differential and
- 14:12Speaker 5: you know minus one hundred at this point, well you
- 14:15Speaker 5: probably have more than just one thing to fit, right,
- 14:17Speaker 5: And as I look around this club, I mean clearly
- 14:20Speaker 5: the one thing you can look at is, yeah, our
- 14:23Speaker 5: walk kind has been shaky at times. But you could
- 14:25Speaker 5: also say, like we just don't have enough left handed
- 14:28Speaker 5: thumb if you.
- 14:29Speaker 1: Will, to score runs.
- 14:31Speaker 5: So that's just there's things that I think you can
- 14:33Speaker 5: address in different manners. And if those are I think
- 14:37Speaker 5: just on the margins, you're slightly better. Right. So, like
- 14:42Speaker 5: I don't want to commit to anything right now because
- 14:44Speaker 5: I think I'll regret saying it. So those are things
- 14:47Speaker 5: that we do think about child them.
- 14:49Speaker 3: The way do you think of the stand of the farm.
- 14:50Speaker 5: System, I think it's from my understanding of just like
- 14:55Speaker 5: internally how we're doing things. Again, I haven't gone out
- 14:58Speaker 5: and seen any players. If I did, I don't know
- 15:00Speaker 5: if I changed my mind, but I think, like I
- 15:03Speaker 5: think from a I think it's it's it's stronger than
- 15:06Speaker 5: maybe public persessions, but you know, it's still not contended.
- 15:12Speaker 2: Well.
- 15:12Speaker 1: For the record, the Angels after Monday night's game are
- 15:15Speaker 1: twelve and seventeen and one run games. Well, gentlemen, let's
- 15:19Speaker 1: start just some general reaction what we heard from O
- 15:22Speaker 1: last night. Sam.
- 15:25Speaker 2: I appreciated that answer he gave to Jeff about this
- 15:27Speaker 2: twenty seven Angels because I felt like it was important.
- 15:30Speaker 2: That's why I asked that follow up, because you just
- 15:32Speaker 2: never hear that where he's like actually thought about what
- 15:35Speaker 2: he felt like was the honest answer and said, that'll
- 15:39Speaker 2: be a tough task, right, And I just think, to me,
- 15:41Speaker 2: that's that's important. Right. You could talk about the kneeding,
- 15:43Speaker 2: the bullpen or the left handed it's not I mean,
- 15:45Speaker 2: all those things are true, and all those things will,
- 15:48Speaker 2: you know, either be addressed or not. But I think
- 15:49Speaker 2: what's most important is, you know, process and mindset sometimes
- 15:52Speaker 2: with the Angels, and so if you if you have
- 15:54Speaker 2: a guy who's operating and understanding this is going to
- 15:58Speaker 2: be a process. This might not mean twenty seven Angels
- 16:00Speaker 2: are going to be a playoff team. You know, then
- 16:03Speaker 2: that that's I think that that's that's important. And listen,
- 16:08Speaker 2: I think he's also he said earlier in that scrum
- 16:10Speaker 2: that you know it's they could still be good next year.
- 16:14Speaker 2: I think he's probably weighing, you know, ultimately, what ardi
- 16:18Speaker 2: moreno wants with what he sees as being realistic. And
- 16:22Speaker 2: if you've been around the Angels or you followed the
- 16:25Speaker 2: Angels for any amount of time, right, Like, it takes
- 16:27Speaker 2: a lot for someone to say something like that, and
- 16:29Speaker 2: laraty moreno is doesn't really ever allow for that type
- 16:33Speaker 2: of talk of punting a season or acknowledging that things
- 16:36Speaker 2: might not be great. So I listen, I I think
- 16:40Speaker 2: some of the breadcrumbs from this last month have been positive.
- 16:43Speaker 2: I don't know what that means. We'll find out a
- 16:45Speaker 2: lot more on August third or by August third. Uh,
- 16:48Speaker 2: But you know, like I said, I just think overall,
- 16:50Speaker 2: it's it's refreshing to hear from from Mosella because he
- 16:53Speaker 2: just he's at least approaching this the right way. I
- 16:56Speaker 2: don't know if he's executing the right way. Well, we
- 16:59Speaker 2: won't know that for a long time, but he's approaching
- 17:01Speaker 2: it the right way, I think, and that's important. It's
- 17:03Speaker 2: it's unique.
- 17:05Speaker 1: Mark. What were your impressions.
- 17:08Speaker 3: Has he been more accessible than the previous Well, I think.
- 17:13Speaker 1: He made himself available last night or Monday night because
- 17:16Speaker 1: the Cardinals are in town, the organization he spent thirty
- 17:19Speaker 1: some odd years with, so that was sort of the
- 17:22Speaker 1: the reason he did that. But I don't know, Sam.
- 17:28Speaker 1: He has given a lot of interviews with various writers
- 17:31Speaker 1: throughout the country. He's done some TV, He's appeared on
- 17:35Speaker 1: the broadcast maybe more than once. Sam, do you get
- 17:39Speaker 1: any sense that he's at least being a little more
- 17:41Speaker 1: accessible and open than the previous GM.
- 17:44Speaker 2: Yeah, one hundred percent. I mean, you know, I think
- 17:47Speaker 2: Perry was accessible in waves at different times. Like there
- 17:51Speaker 2: were times where you could get him quite whenever he
- 17:53Speaker 2: wanted to, essentially, and then there were times where would
- 17:55Speaker 2: disappear for four months and it was it was impossible
- 17:59Speaker 2: to reach it. I mean, I think Perry's last interview
- 18:02Speaker 2: was like early May before eventually getting fired in like
- 18:06Speaker 2: late June. So you know, he went a long time
- 18:08Speaker 2: there without saying anything. I mean, yes, so I would
- 18:11Speaker 2: say that he's been a little bit more accessible. But
- 18:13Speaker 2: you know, again, these are the kind of things where
- 18:15Speaker 2: we'll see how it plays out, you know, does once
- 18:18Speaker 2: some of these players and some of these moves, some
- 18:20Speaker 2: of these decisions start to be owned by John Moselac,
- 18:24Speaker 2: that's when we'll find out more about, you know, really
- 18:27Speaker 2: like the way this dynamic is going to operate. But
- 18:30Speaker 2: like I said, earlier returns are positive.
- 18:32Speaker 1: Mark. Do you think is there any way you can
- 18:35Speaker 1: accomplish the goal of getting some left handed thump and
- 18:38Speaker 1: some relief help by maybe putting a dent in your
- 18:42Speaker 1: rotation by trading Reed Detmer's and or Jose Sorriano this month?
- 18:47Speaker 3: I think within the last hour or so, Jeff Passon
- 18:50Speaker 3: said at least they're open to listening to offers on
- 18:54Speaker 3: the shortstop as well.
- 18:56Speaker 1: So I saw that as well. Yeah, I do an
- 18:59Speaker 1: interesting one.
- 19:01Speaker 3: I mean, you scribes and journalists where these sources come from,
- 19:05Speaker 3: Nightingale Hayman kind of running it back weekly. I don't
- 19:10Speaker 3: know if that's for clicks or what, but apparently, yeah,
- 19:14Speaker 3: I mean, obviously there's there's some guys that are productive ballplayers.
- 19:18Speaker 3: Other teams have some needs as far as the left
- 19:21Speaker 3: handed thump, ideally you kind of get that from your
- 19:26Speaker 3: first baseman. But Nolan's been getting his hits. He's getting
- 19:30Speaker 3: a lot of hits. I think he's on a hot streak.
- 19:32Speaker 3: It's obviously is they're all singles, and is that great
- 19:37Speaker 3: the greatest protection for trout in front of him? It's
- 19:40Speaker 3: better than nothing. But he is not really driving the ball,
- 19:44Speaker 3: so it's always that odd fit where doesn't run all
- 19:47Speaker 3: that well. The defense has been improved. He's squaring the
- 19:51Speaker 3: ball up for him, but it's not going very far.
- 19:56Speaker 3: And where are you going to find that left handed thump?
- 19:59Speaker 3: The left hand bats are actually more available. Right handed
- 20:02Speaker 3: power is what is really lacking around the league right now.
- 20:06Speaker 3: So I think that ideally Josh low two would be
- 20:09Speaker 3: providing that thump. And well wayde Meckler did get in
- 20:13Speaker 3: a bat yesterday, squared it up. Fortunately they actually ruled
- 20:17Speaker 3: it a catch in the air, even though I think
- 20:20Speaker 3: it did hit the dirt. That probably would have been
- 20:21Speaker 3: a double play. But you know, another competitive at bat,
- 20:24Speaker 3: and you know as far as who they move and
- 20:28Speaker 3: what I don't know their farm system. Yeah, it's up
- 20:30Speaker 3: for debate. They have some guys doing well, but enough
- 20:33Speaker 3: people see them still towards the bottom, and Bremner has
- 20:37Speaker 3: really been scuffling lately. The area is closer to five
- 20:40Speaker 3: than not, so hopefully that that goes in the right direction.
- 20:45Speaker 3: But I think you don't get onto the more positive
- 20:48Speaker 3: news was Sam's story at some point.
- 20:51Speaker 1: Yeah, we'll get to that. I did want to bring
- 20:53Speaker 1: up one question though, to you guys. I've noticed an
- 20:56Speaker 1: uptick in Zach Notoo's focus, especially on defense lately. I
- 20:59Speaker 1: don't know if coincided with John Mozelock's arrival. I just wonder,
- 21:04Speaker 1: do you guys think it's possible Netto that maybe Mozi,
- 21:07Speaker 1: like mozae Lock, got here and started to see some
- 21:10Speaker 1: of this things, these things with Netto and started to
- 21:13Speaker 1: look at him more as a trade ship than a
- 21:14Speaker 1: part of this team's future. And maybe that's why we're
- 21:17Speaker 1: seeing some of these trade rumors involving Zach. Yeah, I
- 21:21Speaker 1: think if Zach's plain well, he might he might get
- 21:23Speaker 1: you back more than uh. I don't know about Detmers,
- 21:26Speaker 1: but certainly more in Soriana. Is that a possibility you think?
- 21:30Speaker 2: I mean, I think it's so tough with Netto because
- 21:33Speaker 2: like I really think he could he could be like
- 21:35Speaker 2: your franchise shortstop, right, and I think whoever would trade
- 21:38Speaker 2: for him would view.
- 21:39Speaker 3: Him that way.
- 21:40Speaker 2: You know, he's got the ability to. I agree with
- 21:42Speaker 2: you to some extent, right as you know, I I
- 21:45Speaker 2: don't like these challenges that he had. I think their
- 21:47Speaker 2: selfish challenges, you know, especially like in the you know,
- 21:51Speaker 2: leadoff hitter yesterday, Like that's a bad one he had one,
- 21:54Speaker 2: and I think earlier and against the Tigers, very similar
- 21:57Speaker 2: situation just made no sense. So I'm and I think
- 22:00Speaker 2: that there's certain certain things like you know, the other
- 22:02Speaker 2: day he thought he got somebody out on a tag
- 22:05Speaker 2: the Angels challenge, and he like runs off the field,
- 22:07Speaker 2: kind of shows up the umph like just stuff like that.
- 22:09Speaker 2: I kind of I kind of like, why is that necessary?
- 22:12Speaker 2: But you know, then you see him as a player,
- 22:14Speaker 2: like he's underlying all of it. He's an elite player
- 22:17Speaker 2: in my opinion, so you have to be really careful
- 22:18Speaker 2: about trading him when he might not be at his
- 22:20Speaker 2: peak value. You don't need to trade him, I think
- 22:24Speaker 2: if you do, you want to get something back that
- 22:26Speaker 2: just alters the course of your franchise. I mean because
- 22:28Speaker 2: because certainly I think Neto as a player could still
- 22:30Speaker 2: do that for the Angels. The question is your window,
- 22:33Speaker 2: you know, is he you know? Is there any chance
- 22:35Speaker 2: of extending him? Does he like it here? A lot
- 22:37Speaker 2: of there's a lot of things behind the scenes we
- 22:38Speaker 2: might not know. But yeah, I think there's maybe a
- 22:42Speaker 2: little more focus. I saw him in like mo like
- 22:44Speaker 2: have a nice little interaction on the field before a
- 22:46Speaker 2: game the other day, So it's possible they've developed some
- 22:48Speaker 2: sort of rapport.
- 22:49Speaker 1: Uh.
- 22:50Speaker 2: But yeah, I mean I think there's he's been a
- 22:52Speaker 2: little bit better, but still some things I notice.
- 22:55Speaker 1: Yeah, Okay, we're gonna take one more break for word
- 22:57Speaker 1: from our sponsors, and when we get back we will
- 22:59Speaker 1: get Sam's story involving the Dark Arts.
- 23:07Speaker 4: If you're watching us, you already know we're wearing mack
- 23:09Speaker 4: Weldon right now as we talk about a great brand
- 23:12Speaker 4: that makes things so comfortable and easy to wear. But
- 23:15Speaker 4: if you're listening to the show, let me tell you
- 23:17Speaker 4: a little bit more about mack Weldon with my friend
- 23:19Speaker 4: Eric Kratz.
- 23:21Speaker 8: Yeah, it's comfortable, it's light, it's summertime right now for me,
- 23:25Speaker 8: though they cater to what I need tall clothes. Normally,
- 23:30Speaker 8: when I buy tall clothes it's like something that's cumbersome
- 23:34Speaker 8: and boxy. It's still fits incredibly well, super light, perfect
- 23:39Speaker 8: for the summertime.
- 23:40Speaker 3: They got me all covered.
- 23:42Speaker 4: Comfortable performance material can be yours. Mack Weldon is the spot.
- 23:49Speaker 4: Don't sweat the heat this summer. Feel as effortlessly cool
- 23:52Speaker 4: as you look. With Mack Weldon. Go to Mackweldon dot
- 23:55Speaker 4: com and get twenty percent off your first order of
- 23:56Speaker 4: one hundred and twenty five bucks or more with promo
- 23:58Speaker 4: code foul. That's mc kW e ld o N dot
- 24:01Speaker 4: com code f o u L.
- 24:05Speaker 1: And welcome back to Halo Terry Tory with Sam Blum,
- 24:08Speaker 1: Mark Trumbo, and Mike d. Giovanna Well. The Angels hired
- 24:11Speaker 1: a pro scout last December named Justin Boomer Prince Tein.
- 24:16Speaker 1: I think I have that correct.
- 24:18Speaker 2: Yes.
- 24:18Speaker 1: A few months later, he was fired by a former
- 24:20Speaker 1: GM Perimanasian after he was spotted filming Colorado coaches on
- 24:24Speaker 1: his phone in corus Field by a member of the
- 24:27Speaker 1: Rockies organization. Here's an excerpt from Sam's story. The Rockers
- 24:33Speaker 1: reported the incident to MLB, which alarded the Angels front office.
- 24:36Speaker 1: Then Angels GM Perry Manassian fired Princetein right away. He
- 24:42Speaker 1: also apologized to the Rockies front office, including Paul D. Pedesta,
- 24:46Speaker 1: the president of Baseball Ops, and general manager Josh Burns.
- 24:49Speaker 1: Multiple sources briefed on the initial matters said that both
- 24:52Speaker 1: organizations believe the scout acted on his own initiative and
- 24:56Speaker 1: that the Angels are not facing any punishment from the league.
- 25:00Speaker 1: And remember, the Rockies are giving their calling pitches from
- 25:05Speaker 1: the dugout. So I think that's what's sort of prompted
- 25:09Speaker 1: this whole thing. Sam, Why don't you just start by
- 25:11Speaker 1: telling us how this story came about.
- 25:14Speaker 2: Well, I can't tell you too much about that, but yeah,
- 25:18Speaker 2: you know, it's just it's listen, I think there's just
- 25:22Speaker 2: it sucks. I feel for the scout to some extent,
- 25:25Speaker 2: but ultimately right, like, you can't do that, and it's
- 25:28Speaker 2: like a pretty known thing that you can't do that.
- 25:31Speaker 2: And you know, if you read the story, he's quoted
- 25:33Speaker 2: in a podcast from the talking about that. He had
- 25:36Speaker 2: his own podcast in twenty nineteen where he's talking about
- 25:38Speaker 2: the Astros doing it, and he acknowledges that you can't
- 25:40Speaker 2: do this, so he knows that it wasn't like it
- 25:43Speaker 2: wasn't like a non nefarious mistake. I think he knew
- 25:46Speaker 2: he was breaking the rules. But again, you know, he
- 25:49Speaker 2: didn't call me back, It didn't text me back anything
- 25:51Speaker 2: like that, So I can't ever really know what's in
- 25:53Speaker 2: his head. It's just kind of like the Angels, you know,
- 25:56Speaker 2: trying to cheat against the Rockies is what it is
- 26:00Speaker 2: in terms of, you know, the dynamics and the perspective
- 26:02Speaker 2: you might have on that. But uh, yeah, what what
- 26:06Speaker 2: what a ridiculous thing? And uh, I think it's also
- 26:09Speaker 2: you know, I mean, you don't want to like paint
- 26:11Speaker 2: two brought a stroke brush struck here, but like I mean,
- 26:14Speaker 2: it's the Angels, Like it's a bad hire. I mean,
- 26:15Speaker 2: you should make me smart about this type of stuff.
- 26:17Speaker 2: And this was a position that essentially I believe was
- 26:19Speaker 2: created and then they hired Princekin for it. And you know,
- 26:23Speaker 2: they didn't have this many pro scouts last year. They
- 26:25Speaker 2: added one and they added him, so, uh, I don't
- 26:29Speaker 2: know what the hiring processes, but clearly something was kind
- 26:31Speaker 2: of lost here.
- 26:32Speaker 1: Yeah, do either you guys think this hiring Lee's another
- 26:35Speaker 1: stain on the record of Periminasium.
- 26:41Speaker 3: I don't think it looks very good. This is a
- 26:43Speaker 3: rogue actor. That's this guy. I why are you? I
- 26:47Speaker 3: mean the quote from the article, I think it was
- 26:50Speaker 3: an anonymous scout. This isn't twenty fourteen. Every team, even
- 26:53Speaker 3: the Angels. That's the technology to upload and analyze the broadcast.
- 26:58Speaker 3: I think some of the a lot of the comments
- 27:01Speaker 3: focused on even the Angels. Uh, did you really have
- 27:03Speaker 3: to put that part in there? But yeah, I don't know.
- 27:07Speaker 3: It seems like if you're not cheating, you're not trying.
- 27:10Speaker 6: Uh.
- 27:10Speaker 3: And I don't know if I'm really buying that this
- 27:13Speaker 3: guy just on his own. Uh. I'm assuming an iPhone
- 27:17Speaker 3: maybe Samsung or some you know, hack hacker thing from China.
- 27:21Speaker 3: But is it's hard to covertly film video. I mean
- 27:26Speaker 3: many times that when I was playing at dinner and stuff,
- 27:29Speaker 3: you see you know, people trying to kind of take
- 27:31Speaker 3: pictures and stuff. It's obvious. I mean, good luck with that.
- 27:34Speaker 3: And and I don't know if he was just holding
- 27:36Speaker 3: it up and uh, filming the dugout. And I know
- 27:40Speaker 3: that I believe their pitching coach said, you know, good
- 27:43Speaker 3: luck trying to trying to crack it. Uh, there's say
- 27:46Speaker 3: there's signs that is. But what a bizarre story. I guess. Uh,
- 27:51Speaker 3: you know, it seems like there's going to be no penalty,
- 27:53Speaker 3: but uh, and I guess you can you can categorize
- 27:57Speaker 3: this guy is acting on his own accord and cut
- 28:01Speaker 3: bait with him and now he's in hiding somewhere. So
- 28:03Speaker 3: a very weird story. Did not expect to see this
- 28:06Speaker 3: this morning.
- 28:09Speaker 1: Chillie David saying, one of my favorite all time angels
- 28:11Speaker 1: to cover one of his many he used to repeat
- 28:14Speaker 1: it all the time. If you ain't cheating, you ain't trying.
- 28:17Speaker 1: The thing that got me about this story is why
- 28:20Speaker 1: are you taping the Rockies coach coaches to get an
- 28:24Speaker 1: edge on a series between two of the worst teams
- 28:27Speaker 1: in baseball? And yeah, two out of three in that series.
- 28:31Speaker 1: That one didn't make any sense to me.
- 28:32Speaker 2: Sam, Yeah, I mean, and you know the interesting thing
- 28:35Speaker 2: is the Rockies actually stopped calling pitches from around this time.
- 28:38Speaker 3: Now.
- 28:39Speaker 2: Warren Schaeffer was asked about it in like late June,
- 28:41Speaker 2: and he said, we stopped about three weeks ago, which
- 28:43Speaker 2: is around the time that this all happened. And so
- 28:45Speaker 2: I don't know if there's any connection there, but it
- 28:47Speaker 2: is interesting the timing of that. And yeah, I mean
- 28:51Speaker 2: I don't I don't think he was successful in it clearly,
- 28:54Speaker 2: like you said, they they lost that series and it's
- 28:58Speaker 2: just and I mean, you don't. I think you don't
- 29:01Speaker 2: want to ever be in a situation like whatever happened
- 29:03Speaker 2: with the with the Astros, and you know, hopefully people
- 29:06Speaker 2: have learned their lesson from that and this would be
- 29:08Speaker 2: a much sillier, worse executed version of that. So you know,
- 29:13Speaker 2: I don't know. I credit to the Angels for a
- 29:15Speaker 2: nipping into the bud as soon as you know they
- 29:17Speaker 2: find out. At least that's according to what we've heard.
- 29:19Speaker 1: Were you able to find out, Sam, who this guy is?
- 29:22Speaker 1: I mean, he spent so little time with the organization.
- 29:25Speaker 1: We don't hear a lot of names of pro scouts.
- 29:27Speaker 1: They're pretty anonymous in the game. What's his background and
- 29:31Speaker 1: how he got this job at all, and any idea
- 29:34Speaker 1: what he's what he's doing now.
- 29:36Speaker 2: I also want to give credit to Britt Giroli, who's
- 29:38Speaker 2: off co Violin on this, and she did really heavy
- 29:41Speaker 2: lifting on a lot of this stuff. But yeah, I mean,
- 29:44Speaker 2: his background is you know, he I think coach baseball overseas.
- 29:48Speaker 2: He's been a scout with the Orioles and the Reds,
- 29:51Speaker 2: been a scout for two KBO teams in Korea, so
- 29:54Speaker 2: he's kind of been around and done different things. You know,
- 29:56Speaker 2: you've we've heard, you know. I think if you do
- 29:58Speaker 2: kind of a deep dive on some of his past stops,
- 30:01Speaker 2: it's some of it's a little hard to decipher. So
- 30:03Speaker 2: you know, I don't want to. I don't know. I
- 30:05Speaker 2: don't know his whole life. You know, you could go
- 30:06Speaker 2: through his LinkedIn you can try to understand stuff by
- 30:08Speaker 2: looking you know him up online. He goes by the
- 30:11Speaker 2: Baseball Spy, and I think that kind of tells you
- 30:13Speaker 2: all you need to know about. That's his you know,
- 30:16Speaker 2: self appointed nickname, so it kind of tells you everything
- 30:18Speaker 2: to know.
- 30:19Speaker 1: Mark any final thoughts on our spy.
- 30:23Speaker 3: So you brought up this topic about why you would
- 30:26Speaker 3: do this against the Rockies. Well, I mean, if in
- 30:29Speaker 3: the case of someone who was probably fighting for his job,
- 30:33Speaker 3: you got to pick on the weakest prey out there,
- 30:37Speaker 3: to me, and that's a team that you could reasonably
- 30:39Speaker 3: beat two of three times, maybe that looks better. He
- 30:42Speaker 3: got fired shortly, or at least those conversations with Molly
- 30:46Speaker 3: and most started right around that time. I think somebody
- 30:50Speaker 3: on the show, you know, guests at least, that what
- 30:53Speaker 3: could have caused this lost to the Rockies, lost to
- 30:56Speaker 3: the Dodgers. The Dodgers not surprising, but losing a series
- 31:00Speaker 3: to the Rockies, and you know they haven't been a
- 31:03Speaker 3: good team for a long time. Their owner kind of
- 31:06Speaker 3: medals as well. And I think that the funny thing
- 31:12Speaker 3: to me is the Angels hitter swing at everything, so wait, wait,
- 31:15Speaker 3: what good does it really do? They're not the patient
- 31:17Speaker 3: you know Yankees of old or the Red Sox where
- 31:20Speaker 3: they're going to really take advantage. I mean, the first
- 31:23Speaker 3: pitch of the game that the Angels leadoff hitter usually
- 31:26Speaker 3: offers at it, whatever it is, a lot of the
- 31:29Speaker 3: guys do. They get their swings in. Sometimes it really works,
- 31:33Speaker 3: sometimes it doesn't work. But it doesn't seem like they
- 31:36Speaker 3: care at all about what pitch is coming. They can
- 31:38Speaker 3: see it, you know, sometimes they can hit it, and I, uh,
- 31:42Speaker 3: this princetein guy at the Baseball Spy, uh you know
- 31:47Speaker 3: double O seven.
- 31:48Speaker 7: I I don't know.
- 31:49Speaker 3: I think if he goes by that that handle you
- 31:51Speaker 3: know you know what you're getting when you bring him in.
- 31:55Speaker 1: All right, that is We're gonna end on that note.
- 31:58Speaker 1: Thank you for tuning, thanks for listening. We appreciate the sport.
