- 0:09in a little bit. Hop on up, man.
- 0:11How you doing, Josh? Oh, just peachy.

- 0:22today. Gentlemen.
- 0:23Well, we appreciate you coming out there.
- 0:24Definitely saw that you're going to be out of camp today.
- 0:26Appreciate you stopping by. I know you do a show as well.
- 0:29Working on listeners find you. All streaming platforms, I've
- 0:32been taking a break. You know, I just got to say, if
- 0:36you need to take a break, take that break.
- 0:39And that's what I've been doing. But the Kirby on Sports Podcast
- 0:41www.kirby on sports.com all streaming platforms All
- 0:46listening platforms. It's.
- 0:48Been a blast for five years and all the connections I've made
- 0:51today. You've probably seen me go
- 0:53around talking to everybody and it's just a lot of fun handing
- 0:57out my business cards and making more connections everywhere I
- 1:00go. It is.
- 1:01It definitely is. And I mean we we know all the
- 1:03same people that we swim in the same circles.
- 1:06But I want to hear from your perspective, how do you feel a
- 1:12as a fan once these guys took over and what's your thoughts on
- 1:18this season specifically this year?
- 1:20Well, once they took over, I feel like myself, along with the
- 1:26rest of the fan base, more of a sigh of relief, if you get what
- 1:31I mean. And like that hope, like that
- 1:35light at the end of the tunnel is, so to speak, like the
- 1:39commanders are turning the page. Getting things going, we can
- 1:44finally see a good football team here who could potentially win a
- 1:48couple playoff games. I'm not saying it's going to
- 1:52happen overnight, but I think the new ownership is in the step
- 1:57in the right direction. So this season, I mean, looking
- 2:02at Chase, I know we've had a lot of conversations about Chase and
- 2:05how he's going to look, how Sam Howell is going to look, but I
- 2:09feel like. Ron Rivera and Eric the enemy.
- 2:13Eric the enemy I love. I loved his energy out there at
- 2:16training camp today, but I feel like the right coaching staff is
- 2:22in place. I I will say that Ron Rivera, I
- 2:26think he might be on a short leash this year just based on
- 2:31what I'm hearing, what I'm seeing.
- 2:33But. I I I think it overall it's
- 2:35going to be a decent year. I don't think they're going to
- 2:39make the playoffs, but I think big strides are going to be made
- 2:42to see where this commander's team will be headed moving
- 2:46forward. So I got a question for you.
- 2:49So as a fan, what are you most looking for this year as a fan,
- 2:54not from. The football side, But just as a
- 2:56fan, as a fan, I'm hoping. More fan friendly, like
- 3:03Commander. Stuff like this.
- 3:05Training camp was amazing. I'm going to be coming to a lot
- 3:08more more fan friendly stuff, hopefully more content creator
- 3:12stuff too, because last year I'm not sure if you were there, but
- 3:15the draft they had like boots where people could set up,
- 3:20bringing players around, so on and so forth.
- 3:22So stuff like that. I feel like the new internship
- 3:25in Jason, right? I talked to him for like. 5
- 3:28minutes Today I was like, I you don't get that with any other
- 3:31team president. I mean I I would think but he
- 3:34took his time. I was like man you're doing
- 3:35great work what you did for the content creators and just share
- 3:40my work with him and everything and it it's just so great to see
- 3:43some more fan friendly stuff like that.
- 3:46I feel like that would be amazing to see.
- 3:48If agreed. There's definitely a lot of
- 3:51stuff going on. I've missed that last year
- 3:53during actually two years ago during the draft because I was
- 3:55doing a charity event at the stadium.
- 3:58But if today shows you anything, they are wanting to welcome the
- 4:03fans back. They're trying to give us
- 4:06outlets. I mean I was laughing and joking
- 4:09with was was Sherry Burris that we saw today from NFL Network.
- 4:14That's the draft day party at National Harbor.
- 4:18The credit card machines didn't work and you have a merchandise
- 4:22tent and people cannot buy stuff.
- 4:24And no one cares cash anymore? No, because most places don't
- 4:27take cash, but it's like those little small things today where
- 4:30they had a massive tent. It felt like we were in Richmond
- 4:33without the good BBQ. I mean, from a setup
- 4:36perspective, they had the massive tent out there.
- 4:39They are making the investments to make fans want to come back
- 4:42and spend money. And that is something I'm
- 4:46excited for because to me that money is going to go back into
- 4:49other things that is going to want players to come here,
- 4:53facilities, things like that. And hearing you know, Magic was
- 4:56a player. Granted, different sport, but he
- 4:58knows, and Joe Gibbs was a huge proponent of this.
- 5:02If you make the players happy and don't have them want for
- 5:05anything, then they will perform better.
- 5:07And to me it's the same thing for this band base.
- 5:10If you keep us fat and happy, then eventually the winds will
- 5:14come. You can't control the winds
- 5:16right off the bat as a new ownership group, but there's
- 5:19other stuff within your purview that you can affect, and they're
- 5:22trying to do that now. Today out at Ashburn, let's face
- 5:27it, we all watch NFL Network. And when you watch NFL Network
- 5:31and they go around the different teams, you see that that's the
- 5:35true training camp if NFL Network without an Ashburn a
- 5:38day. And they pan that camera.
- 5:41It would make you feel as though you're at a true training camp
- 5:45for the first time. I'm you know what I'm saying?
- 5:47That the vibe was there. It was a training Camp 5.
- 5:49Absolutely. More so than than ever before.
- 5:52Thing is, I mean, how do we know?
- 5:53Because it's never felt like that.
- 5:55I've been to training camp for two plus decades.
- 5:57It has never felt like that. And I don't go to Fan
- 5:59Appreciation Day just because I don't want to deal with the
- 6:02traffic, not because I don't want to be bunks, everybody.
- 6:04It's just a lot of people and it's on the weekend and I'm not
- 6:06going to go this Saturday because they're expecting 10,000
- 6:09people. Well.
- 6:10They're not calling it Fan Appreciation Day.
- 6:12What exactly are they calling it?
- 6:13Back to football day or? Something Yeah, yeah.
- 6:16So a lot of people have been asking me, I don't see where it
- 6:18says Fan Appreciation. They're not calling it Fan
- 6:20Appreciation Day, they're calling it something else.
- 6:22But nevertheless, it is happening this Saturday.
- 6:26This Saturday is when it's happening.
- 6:27So back together Saturday is what they're calling it, and I
- 6:29think that's an NFL thing. But I know you've been a
- 6:32training camp before. I mean, just your thoughts on
- 6:38how practices run. Well, what do you mean from a
- 6:42coaching standpoint? Like on the field, Eric the
- 6:46enemy? I mean just his energy, his
- 6:49intensity, like there was a miscue or something.
- 6:53He's like get off the field, get off the field.
- 6:55He said it 3-4 times. I don't remember the exact
- 6:58instance on what happened, but his energy, I'm like, Oh my
- 7:02gosh, but just looking from afar.
- 7:07It looked like the players were in it.
- 7:10The coaches. I don't really see Rivera much
- 7:13but Eric B Enemy he just stood out to me he was a get off the
- 7:16field. I that energy if that keeps up
- 7:19throughout the season I I I think this offense might be
- 7:22kicking into another year with him and his style because he
- 7:27only expects the most out of the players and if they're if the
- 7:32offense is not going to give their best to the coaching staff
- 7:36and Eric B enemy. They might have to take a seat.
- 7:39So Speaking of Eric Bien and me, him being the assistant head
- 7:43coach, I'm big on this question, so I'm going to put you on the
- 7:45spot here and I ask everyone this question.
- 7:48When is the last time that the Redskins Washington football
- 7:51team slash commanders have had an assistant head coach?
- 8:00I can't say off the top of my head.
- 8:02No one can. It's been a long time now.
- 8:05We talked to EB from the junkies, right?
- 8:08That was Grandpa. My bad, My bad, brother, hey, my
- 8:12bad, my bad. But Grant I asked him and he had
- 8:17the same response. And then he thought about it and
- 8:19he said Joe Gibbs. And so Joe Gibbs and I said,
- 8:23well, we don't know if it was Joe Gibbs one or Joe Gibbs 2.0.
- 8:28So, but the fact is, he is. The assistant head coach, which
- 8:33speaks volumes to me because okay, I'll tell you who it was.
- 8:37It was Joe Gibbs. Two point O and it was Greg
- 8:40Williams. Greg Williams, he was the
- 8:41assistant head coach and I can see that because granted, I I
- 8:46really feel that if this franchise, if Snyder would have
- 8:49let Greg Williams be the head coach after Joe Gibbs, then we
- 8:53would have had a better trajectory that we would have
- 8:56not had so many years of just losing everything else have.
- 8:59You start all over again. Yeah, Greg, he's a good coach.
- 9:01I mean, he's done fantastic stuff with the DC defenders and
- 9:05their defense and everything else.
- 9:07But yeah, Greg Williams. That answer that question then
- 9:10finally, so but I I'm right there with you, but Josh want to
- 9:14make sure we get to some other fans here.
- 9:15One last thing. Give me a bull prediction.
- 9:18What's Josh Kirby's bull prediction for the Commanders
- 9:21this year? It can be on the field.
- 9:22It can be off the field. Just give me something.
- 9:24Ron Rivera gets canned if they don't win more than three out of
- 9:29their. The first three out of their
- 9:31six, Yeah, I I think he's gone. If they can't get off to a very
- 9:37hot start and I think Eric the enemy takes over.
- 9:41That's that's my bold prediction.
- 9:43And I mean, maybe I see Ron Rivera more in this stage as
- 9:50some guy who runs in the front office.
- 9:53Doing stuff because he seen it seemed like last year he was
- 9:56doing everything. I heard the press conference
- 9:58where he said it. It feels good not to be a
- 10:00manager. So we'll just have to see if
- 10:03he's actually focusing on just the football field because you
- 10:07know all that other stuff that we're going to forget about.
- 10:12He had to. He had to deal with that in a
- 10:14way. Let's not get get our minds.
- 10:17To answer treatments and everything.
- 10:19That too, but I mean with all that stuff.
- 10:22Piling on he had to answer a lot of non football related
- 10:25questions and he's getting back to football.
- 10:29So I feel like though and I'm hearing this all around from
- 10:34different people, I know different connections.
- 10:37If he does not get off to a hot start and the commanders are
- 10:41like maybe three and five, three and six, something like that, I
- 10:46I feel like he's gone. I agree with you.
- 10:49I mean, I I think that was my prediction a couple weeks ago
- 10:52that I don't think Ron's gonna live out his contract.
- 10:54His teams historically start off slow and then end up picking up
- 10:58a little bit of steam. And then we usually go, you
- 11:01know, 7:00 or 8:00 and then somehow we managed to go 500
- 11:04last year at 8-8 and one. So I he is not managing the
- 11:08offense, he's not managing the defense, he's not really general
- 11:12managing the team because we've got the Marty's in place.
- 11:15So what is he doing other than taking a paycheck?
- 11:17And I think that he will be let go in the beginning of the
- 11:21season. Yeah, it was absolutely
- 11:45terrible. And Eric, the editor, finally
- 11:24gets a shot to see what he can actually do.
- 11:27Because you heard it. Sam House says he has total
- 11:30control of Eric Gaming's offense, and Ron didn't really
- 11:34do much today. I'll be out there for four or
- 11:36five days of training camp. I'll be curious to see what he
- 11:38actually does, because he didn't even know that we could get
- 11:41kicked out of the playoffs last. And I tell you what I I bet.
- 11:49That Cleveland was going to be Washington because he put,
- 11:53Carson once said. I'm fine with the once decision
- 11:56to have him play because you had $28 million wrapped up in the
- 11:59table. You had to find out what he had
- 12:01in him. But he rested his hat on Carson
- 12:06Wentz. I'm the guy that looked at the
- 12:08tape and the bleeding analytics and everything else.
- 12:10And you know what didn't work out?
- 12:12That was after a win, too, Against Chicago, against
- 12:15Chicago. And he gets pised that.
- 12:18That they're talking about Carson and and he just stormed
- 12:21off after a win too. That says a lot but I I'm not a
- 12:25fan of his. You knows I'm not a fan of his.
- 12:26I'm very public about it and I hope for this fan base that I'm
- 12:30wrong and that you're wrong and that he does well and that's the
- 12:34hogs have a tough decision to make on do they extend him.
- 12:38But he is a lame duck coach and typically lame duck coaches it
- 12:42can. And I made a comment on Fox 5
- 12:45last week, said that he's a dead man walking.
- 12:48And I got so much crap for that because of fans saying, you
- 12:53know, he came back from cancer and this and that, like.
- 12:56True, He did. Yeah, he did.
- 12:58Get your panties out a bunch, right?
- 13:00He's a dead man walking because his track record is He starts
- 13:03off slow. He does not have a winning
- 13:05record as a head coach. Period.
- 13:06He has won three seasons as a NFL head coach.
- 13:09He luck box his way into Cam Newton.
- 13:12I always want to say that Steve Spurrier to the coach, Cam
- 13:15Newton to 15 to 1 so we can see what he does with his team.
- 13:19But for the longest time Eric the enemy never got credit for
- 13:25his offense. It was always Andy Reid.
- 13:27If this team does well offensively, it ain't going to
- 13:30be because of Ron. It's going to be because of the
- 13:31enemy. So other than Ron already being
- 13:34paid and coaches contracts being guaranteed, he should be going
- 13:37to mine. Well, it starts September 10th.
- 13:41And that'll be the new day that we see what this regime is going
- 13:45to do. Jeffrey, appreciate you being on
- 13:46the show with this man. Appreciate you.
- 13:48Keep in touch, keep on doing what you do best.
- 13:50You all do great work. Thank you all.
- 13:53Thanks for coming, man. All right, Mellow, let's get you
- 13:55up here, brother. We got DJ Mellow T coming up
- 13:59right now. That's right from the mellow
- 14:03slide. What's going on, fellas?
- 14:06It's good to see you, man. It's good to finally meet you in
- 14:07person. I've heard so much about you.
- 14:10And then rally did the Cowboys home rally right.
- 14:14My boys restaurant, right. You guys seem to have a blast
- 14:17there. I'm hoping we can you know, make
- 14:19that a ritual. Absolutely back here in the DC
- 14:22area and just glad you're able to make it out of here, the
- 14:24brewery and hang out with us again.
- 14:25Something to think about Rally. That's a good, good, good idea.
- 14:28Oh, by the way, same my same sentiments to you, Ted.
- 14:32I'm finally glad. Glad to meet you.
- 14:34Heard good things about you from Rally Got.
- 14:36You know, knew about the show, knew about your podcast.
- 14:39But here we go, my man. So I'm glad to be here, man.
- 14:43Thanks for having me. I appreciate it.
- 14:45Thanks for having me. And and you too, my main rally
- 14:47captain right here. So it's a good look.
- 14:48Y'all. Appreciate you coming out, man.
- 14:50It means a lot. I'm here, baby.
- 14:51I'm here. So what were your thoughts, man,
- 14:54when you have you been at training camp in the past?
- 14:56When's the last time you were? Oh, absolutely.
- 14:59Multiple years, multi years. So I ran in a rally cap over the
- 15:03years. You know you've been down in
- 15:04Richmond a couple times. Back in the day when Back in the
- 15:09day. But I I picked my spots and
- 15:11picked my, you know, I choose my times based on what I got going
- 15:14on in the other life, you know? This crazy business I'm in, what
- 15:19would you say is one of the biggest changes since you've
- 15:22been to other training camps? What would you say was one of
- 15:25the biggest changes from the from the other training camps to
- 15:29today's training camp? Oh, gotcha.
- 15:33Good question. I would say the need, the new,
- 15:37the renewed feel of enthusiasm and the air that you, it's a
- 15:42different air, it's a new air. You know, you can, you can just
- 15:47walk right through it, you know, you can just see it, man.
- 15:49And it's like a renewed sense of let's get it, you know, let's we
- 15:54here we can breathe again. That's what I feel.
- 15:57I feel like the fan base. Is feeling that same, you know,
- 16:01across the board, the landscape. I was looking at them very
- 16:03intently. But you know, when we were
- 16:05together earlier and I was really looking at the faces and
- 16:08I was looking at the the, the whole thing, the camaraderie,
- 16:11the new, just like I said, it's a renewed sense of we got that
- 16:15cloud from over our head, Let's get this thing cracked.
- 16:18That's what I feel. I'm right there with you.
- 16:22I mean our listeners obviously here rally, they hear me, they
- 16:25understand, you know that from an early perspective we kind of
- 16:28have our feelings. But from your standpoint, yes,
- 16:31you felt it today too. Absolutely.
- 16:33I mean, we're talking to executives standing along the
- 16:36sideline telling them I have never seen a weekday.
- 16:40It is Thursday, Thursday at 9:00 in the morning when most people
- 16:43should be at work, right? Most people, it was standing
- 16:47room only. Those bleachers hold 2000
- 16:49people, so there were at least 2000 people there.
- 16:51Not to count, all the other fans lined up behind us, standing in
- 16:55the typical spot. At least three deep.
- 16:57Yeah, absolutely. Plus the other section on the
- 17:01other side of the field that was full there.
- 17:03I mean, this is just, it's unreal.
- 17:06And someone put on Twitter that's this fan base is a
- 17:10sleeping giant that is ready to wake up.
- 17:14And if today does not show that, then you must be Stevie Wonder
- 17:18and you're blind. This isn't this isn't the 19. 99
- 17:26two thousand, this is 2023 and like you said, we're ready to
- 17:32roar. Prince said it all.
- 17:34You're sleeping, Giant. He got a line in his pocket.
- 17:36We're we're ready to roar, man. We we really are.
- 17:39So I want to ask you this question.
- 17:42I feel it's going to take a couple of years.
- 17:44And the Harris ownership group is saying that, you know,
- 17:47there's 31 other NFL owners, they're trying to do the same
- 17:50thing, right? This fan base has been dying to
- 17:54win for over 2 decades. Got you.
- 17:58We're in a honeymoon phase, right?
- 17:59Right. How much time will you give them
- 18:04to actually get this thing back on track?
- 18:06As far as a Super Bowl appearance?
- 18:08As far as winning again as far as being in the playoffs?
- 18:14I actually think that we can hit the playoffs this year.
- 18:17This year. I do.
- 18:18I was watching the squad intently.
- 18:21The squad last year and you know both of you guys are hardcore
- 18:25fans like myself, so you know, y'all are very intent with the
- 18:29goings, ONS and of the mechanisms, who's doing what and
- 18:32who ain't doing that. I really feel as though there
- 18:35are some extremely talented pieces that have been
- 18:38implemented on this team that are now going to take shape with
- 18:42the addition of Sam Howell because he is a sleeper.
- 18:45I'm telling you, he is a sleeper and he the kicking ball.
- 18:49And he ain't scared. That's the most important thing.
- 18:52He's not scared at the moment. That's what I look for,
- 18:55especially in the quarterback. And he can do it all.
- 18:58He doesn't know it all. Of course, we all know there's
- 19:00room for improvement. So to answer that question, I'm
- 19:04going to give it to you. They can hit the playoffs this
- 19:07year. I don't know how far, but the
- 19:09Sky's the limit once you get there.
- 19:11And if you hit your stride, who the well, who the heck knows
- 19:14what's going to happen? But I I give him a shot to go
- 19:17in. And if not this year, not too
- 19:20far behind. Trust me, I see.
- 19:22They're just that talented. Especially if the difference
- 19:24shows up. A lot's going to hinge on Chase
- 19:26Young as well. This will make or break year for
- 19:28him. He's going to be good or he
- 19:30going to be out of here. That's it.
- 19:33Well, Melo, I like him. Sam Howe to Neo from The Matrix.
- 19:38And if did you watch The Matrix? Yeah, So in the beginning of the
- 19:42Matrix. They didn't know, was he the One
- 19:46or what did he turn out. He turned out to be the One.
- 19:48And so that's how I view me Sam Howe right now as Neo because he
- 19:53basically right now against Dallas.
- 19:57I like your analysis, by the way.
- 19:59Against Dallas, he he No one thought, no one gave him a
- 20:02chance, just like Neo. But now all of a sudden the
- 20:06people in the background are saying maybe he is the One
- 20:09exactly and so. Let's just see if he can
- 20:12continue what he did against Dallas in 22 in this 23 season
- 20:17to to have your prediction come true.
- 20:20Exactly. And and let's hope that is the
- 20:22case. So Ted, I just don't think we're
- 20:24that far off. I hear you, but let's just say
- 20:29they don't make the playoffs. How much time are you going to
- 20:32give them before the honeymoon's over?
- 20:37Not long at all. One to two year window.
- 20:39Really. One to two year, Because you
- 20:41know they're going to do that with this new renewed sense of
- 20:44urgency and fan enthusiasm and player enthusiasm, ownership
- 20:48enthusiasm. You can't sit around as an
- 20:51organization and not give the pieces that are needed.
- 20:55You're going to have to bring them because we ain't waiting
- 20:57for that, because nobody's waiting.
- 20:59We've waited 2 decades. Thank you.
- 21:00So there's no more waiting. So if they missed the missed the
- 21:03boat this year, trust me, it won't be long after it because
- 21:07we in that phase now let's go. I like the excitement.
- 21:10I like the enthusiasm. I like your protection.
- 21:13I hope you're right. I just don't think that Sam can
- 21:18do it on his own. I know he can't do it on his
- 21:20own. And the problem is going to be
- 21:21that offensive line. And we saw the offensive line
- 21:24get destroyed today, just absolutely demolished.
- 21:26Sam got sacked at least three times.
- 21:29If they were allowed to take him to the ground, a bunch of balls
- 21:31flew up in the air. But the problem is.
- 21:34You can't really see anything because the guys want that pads
- 21:37on. The guys aren't engaging, but we
- 21:40have 4 new guys starting on that offensive line in new positions
- 21:44and that to me Sam can be all world, but if he doesn't have a
- 21:49couple of guys up front that can actually block for and give him
- 21:51some time, it ain't going to matter.
- 21:54I like that good, good perspective.
- 21:56If I can respond, may I? Sure.
- 21:59That's why you guys were talking about.
- 22:02Be enemy. That's the be enemy effect is
- 22:04going to come in. That's when the be enemy effect
- 22:06is going to come in because he is not going to allow that kid
- 22:10to get beat up because what he'll do is put those guys in
- 22:14front of him the the old line you're talking about and he will
- 22:17put them in a punishment bro. Because he don't be playing.
- 22:20He will put them in a punishment where they will not want to
- 22:23allow a sack. It's a different guy.
- 22:25It's a different sheriff in town, bro.
- 22:28I agree with you. Definitely a different guy in
- 22:30town. So let's go back a couple years.
- 22:33Let's go back to 2012. Yes, we know that the offensive
- 22:36line in 2012 was not that good, but what made them look good?
- 22:41RG3's legs, of course. So we know that Sam Howe has,
- 22:44he's not as fast as RG3, but we saw when he played for North
- 22:48Carolina the fact that he had scrambling ability and he could
- 22:52think on the fly. So what I see is the way, the
- 22:56same way that the Shanahans did with RG3, rolling him out,
- 23:02making playing to his strong suits.
- 23:05That's what I see. EB, after possibly the first
- 23:08game or even the first preseason game or the the first, the
- 23:10first, actually practice against Baltimore when they really have
- 23:14another jersey in front of them who's playing for something more
- 23:18than just kudos from your boy, you know?
- 23:20So I think that once that true talent comes and they play each
- 23:25other, EB's will say hypothetically okay, yeah, we're
- 23:30not where we need to be. So I'm going to have to figure
- 23:32out some offensive plays to roll my quarterback out the same way
- 23:35they deal with RG. So I think that like you, we'll
- 23:39be okay. I think we'll be okay.
- 23:42Especially with him as Shift Man, I just, I just feel that
- 23:45y'all. I hear you and I've.
- 23:48I've got that energy. I've got that excitement for
- 23:50beyond me. I just wish that they gave him a
- 23:56chance to get some more weapons in this draft.
- 23:59To go first pick and 2nd pick defensive back to me was doing a
- 24:03disservice to your new fall offensive coordinator where you
- 24:06have invested in defense after how many years in a row on this
- 24:10team and you have not made a true significant investment in
- 24:13offense. You have put in scrubs on
- 24:17offensive line guys that would not have been picked up by other
- 24:21teams. Fourth round picks, fifth round
- 24:24picks in your offensive line. At a certain point you have to
- 24:27invest in a stunt. And that's something they
- 24:29invested in, was Cosby, who is a tackle.
- 24:32Now they're moving a men to guard.
- 24:34You know, you just you can't let the most popular position on
- 24:40your football team because of your past Super Bowl wins be
- 24:43completely neglected like that. And they should have gave him
- 24:46some help and okay Nick Gates coming in from the Giants.
- 24:51That's great, but. Can he stay healthy?
- 24:53Can he be healthy? There is just too many question
- 24:56marks at a line and we're not going to know until they put the
- 25:00pads on, until they go against the Ravens, until they're
- 25:03actually doing some stuff in preseason.
- 25:04But really, we're not going to know until week four, Week 5
- 25:07because of attrition. This is a game that takes a toll
- 25:10on its players and can these guys stand up and hold up?
- 25:14Yes, one of the questions that I like to ask you B and I don't
- 25:16think it was brought up and and if it has been, maybe you guys
- 25:19can answer this question. Had you mentioned getting him
- 25:23some help? How much say did he have in the
- 25:27draft? Do you know?
- 25:29That's a good point. How much say?
- 25:30Because he may have said. I think, I think we're okay.
- 25:33Well, the lineman a lot of the the top tier lineman went before
- 25:36we picked at that point. So because they weren't there
- 25:39they're going best player available.
- 25:41But a lot of people say well that Emmanuel Forbes was not the
- 25:43best player available. They would rather go on
- 25:45Christian Gonzalez than what to the.
- 25:46I agree. But to me, if Forbes fits the
- 25:49system and I love Fred. But Fred could sell salt to a
- 25:54slug. I mean, the way he talks, he's
- 25:57hyping up Forbes like he's the next second coming of Champ
- 26:00Bailey. But we'll have to wait and see
- 26:03how we can handle today. I mean, I told you, hey, there's
- 26:05Forbes. Watch out.
- 26:06He's turned sideways. You can't see him.
- 26:08You know, I mean, he's a stick figure right there.
- 26:13But I just wish that we had a chance to actually see what he
- 26:17could do. And.
- 26:19Because Ron is a defensive guy, I feel that some of that was
- 26:22kind of lean towards that side of the ball.
- 26:24But you know full well that's the offensive line has been
- 26:28struggling for a very long time and we'll see what happens and
- 26:31hopefully this camp we get a chance to actually see because I
- 26:34talked about this the other day. They constantly love saying iron
- 26:38sharpens iron. Well, this offensive line has
- 26:40been going against this defensive line for how many
- 26:43years now and I'm sorry that knife is dull.
- 26:46It ain't getting sharp. We going to find out when they
- 26:50play Baltimore. Yeah, we will the joint
- 26:52practices. We will yeah.
- 26:54And I I can't wait to actually shout out to to well I hope to
- 27:01be at training camp against the joint practices in Baltimore.
- 27:05My fingers are crossed I may have a situation where I might
- 27:09be able to attend so I'll just keep it right there.
- 27:11But if so you guys are going to see and I'm going to give these
- 27:14guys a true critique of what I feel and well for you got you
- 27:20fans, you know that. Yeah I am.
- 27:22I'm a very, I'm an optimist, I I want to see the best.
- 27:25But if it's not there, you're going to hear the real rally,
- 27:29you know? So yeah, if I'm able to go, if
- 27:33I'm able to go and I can actually see what they look like
- 27:36in pads against another color jersey, I'll give you my honest
- 27:40opinion and critique of how far we can go this season.
- 27:44We welcome it. I welcome it.
- 27:46Definitely and Speaking of welcome.
- 27:47Thank you. Appreciate it, Mel.
- 27:49Thank you so much. Thanks for having me, Fam.
- 27:50Speaking of which before you go, yes Sir.
- 27:52Are you working on any new projects or anything like that
- 27:54you that you can talk about? Oh, yeah, actually, yeah.
- 27:56Well, yeah, we have the we will, we will be filming I think next
- 28:01week actually the continuing footage for my new Commander
- 28:05Stomp song and which you will be in, of course.
- 28:08And you're already on the song rally Cap, ladies and gentlemen.
- 28:11And so we'll be doing that. And of course I have the new the
- 28:15new song Let the Good Times Roll.
- 28:17Popping out real soon for the HBC us.
- 28:20And yeah, I got three other things I'm working on.
- 28:23And where can they find these songs?
- 28:24Oh, absolutely. Everything is going to be when
- 28:26it's up. It's going to be on all digital
- 28:28platforms, you know, Spotify, the Apple Music Shoot, you name
- 28:32it, every Amazon Music, everything.
- 28:35And all the videos will be on YouTube and.
- 28:38Every other platform you know, it'll be, you know, distro, kid,
- 28:40everything. So we'll be rocking it nice.
- 28:42We'll be hitting it, you know. Glad to have you on board that
- 28:44thing too, bro. Like Ted say, we got to get that
- 28:46thing popping. I like the the rally thing, but
- 28:49especially them Cowgirls. Thank you all for having me.
- 28:53I appreciate. You Ted.
- 28:54We. Appreciate you to your rally
- 28:55cap. All right, now peace out, bro.
- 28:57Sir. You're one of the most positive
- 29:00fans I know, but there is someone to me that is more
- 29:02positive than you, and I got to ask him to come up here more
- 29:05positive than me. Yeah, it's him.
- 29:07We got my boy Tim Meek in the house from Indianapolis.
- 29:10Come on up, Tim. So it is the first day of
- 29:13training care and this man flew. I think he flew.
- 29:18He drove. He drove you.
- 29:19Drove all the way out here, he drove.
- 29:22For training, Care put it on. He drove from Indianapolis.
- 29:32True fan. How long did that take you, man?
- 29:34Okay, the drive from India is not as bad as it probably
- 29:37sounds. It's about 8 1/2 hours.
- 29:40So with me a lot of times when I come out here, a lot of times
- 29:44when I come out here, it's because or or how I get out here
- 29:48depends on travel as you know very well rally.
- 29:51There's flights like this time that the the timing didn't work
- 29:55out. So I could have got here today
- 29:57but I'm going to miss camp today and I have a lot going on out
- 29:59here. I'm visiting some family, going
- 30:01to an Orioles game, playing some golf, so.
- 30:04The way the flights lined up, the the timing just wasn't going
- 30:06to work. So I drove.
- 30:08Yeah, that's dedication, right? 8 1/2 hours each way.
- 30:13But I I do it all the time. I do whatever I got to do to
- 30:16support the team. That's what we do.
- 30:19It is. It is that's.
- 30:21What all three of us do? For those that don't know, I
- 30:23mean, Tim, I don't know how you don't know.
- 30:25If you listen to the show, you're a fan of the team.
- 30:27I mean, Tim lives in Indy and he represents burgundy and gold.
- 30:31I mean just through and through and I was telling rally before
- 30:34he walks up here to me I I wanted to do the show a rally
- 30:37because he is kind of the counter thought to me.
- 30:41He is very glasses half full whereas I am it's half empty at
- 30:46times And you the glass is always full, it is never empty
- 30:50and that juice is fresh and there is no pulp in there
- 30:53depending on how you like it. So I mean, how have you stayed
- 30:57so positive throughout? At least past 24 years, man, I'm
- 31:02especially being out there. I mean, it's a long story, but
- 31:05the the gist of it is I've been out of market my entire life.
- 31:10So this team, the way I view it, is different than how you guys
- 31:13may view it here. I never attended a home football
- 31:17game until 2012. Really.
- 31:19Really. But really, what brought me into
- 31:23this community? Was being at Canton for the Monk
- 31:27and Green art and Darrell. I was there in Canton for the
- 31:32for that celebration for that weekend.
- 31:34Was the first time in my entire life and I was in my late 20s, I
- 31:37believe when when I went to that.
- 31:39I'd never been around other Redskins fans at that level.
- 31:43I've always lived out of market where I'll go to a road game in
- 31:46whatever city I may have lived in.
- 31:48You're going to see a couple 100, maybe 1000 fans, but we're
- 31:50not all together. I'm not tailgating those people.
- 31:53We're not really talking to those people.
- 31:54We're going to high five each other if we're in the same
- 31:56section. And that was about it.
- 31:58So the first time I go to Canton, I'm around thousands and
- 32:01thousands. Oh my gosh.
- 32:03I I. So you were there.
- 32:05I my, we pulled into the parking lot where they shuttle you to
- 32:10the stadium, right? And those buses were full.
- 32:19Of Redskins fans, One after another, just shuttle after
- 32:22shuttle. So I step on the bus for the
- 32:24first time. I just got in there and on the
- 32:28bus ride over, The very short bus ride over, they're singing
- 32:31hailed with Redskins as a group. I've never heard that in my
- 32:35life. I never been around.
- 32:36I was in tears as a as a young man I was brought to tears and
- 32:41the whole weekend was just nothing but tears.
- 32:43Meeting people tail, truly tailgating with other fans.
- 32:48Experiencing that atmosphere that we had there because you
- 32:52were so close to the players, you know, I'm talking to art and
- 32:55to Darrell and Fred Smoot, and for as far as players from that
- 32:59era. I was talking to Fred Smoot and
- 33:01Chris Cooley and all those guys from that generation, and I was
- 33:05already a rabid fan. But that made me realize this is
- 33:09what brings me to life and it makes me happy.
- 33:12It makes me most happy. So I need to figure out how I
- 33:15can do this more. So ultimately, you know like
- 33:18because I was still pretty young there, I didn't even have kids
- 33:20yet, I had kids. So that kind of slowed the
- 33:22progress a little bit. But eventually in 2012, I was
- 33:25able to attend my first game. The RG3 year was, you know,
- 33:28obviously that was same type of energy and electricity was
- 33:31brought. And my first time at FedEx 2012,
- 33:35I thought it's it's the reason to this day I love FedEx.
- 33:38It was my first exciting experience RFK, that's why I
- 33:42love this team the way I do. I've only seen through the lens
- 33:45of losing. And in the in the sphere of
- 33:50being at the games, that's all I've ever witnessed.
- 33:53I'm old enough to visually see what happened in the glory
- 33:57years, but during that era I did not watch them on.
- 34:01They were only on where I lived when it was a nationally
- 34:05televised football game, which was four or five, six times a
- 34:08year. Otherwise, I'm sitting at home
- 34:11watching the Vikings play. And waiting for the ticker to
- 34:14come across because back then it didn't scroll 24/7 like it does
- 34:17now. You're waiting for that 15
- 34:19minute update so I can get the score of the Redskins game.
- 34:22And that's how I grew up. Watching the Redskins
- 34:24highlights, ESPN reading the newspaper, that's that.
- 34:28That's how it all started. And I think that's why my
- 34:31perspective is much different with the current situation and
- 34:35why I was able to make it through the Snyder era with so
- 34:38much positivity because I came into it late.
- 34:42As far as being in that atmosphere in that community, I
- 34:48was late coming into it not with the fandom, but with being
- 34:52immersed amongst the people. So do you think that you also it
- 34:57helped being in an away market? Because here we hear it day
- 35:02after day, hour after hour. He's listening to the same
- 35:05shows. You might not live here, but
- 35:07you're streaming the fan and listening to the shows.
- 35:10But I think it's different still living out of town versus being
- 35:15here and seeing it. I mean, you can hear about it,
- 35:17but to see it, it's a little different, right?
- 35:20It is different. But what's changed is when these
- 35:23podcasts have started and when these radio shows are now
- 35:26streamed through the podcast systems.
- 35:28No, I I didn't know who Kevin Sheehan was until seven years
- 35:32ago, when I first picked up his pot, and he's my favorite person
- 35:36to listen to. But he's.
- 35:39Relatively new to me compared to to you guys.
- 35:43I had no way of listening to these shows like you said.
- 35:46So I think when you look at some of the negativity that's that
- 35:49comes about in the maybe in the local community, it's because it
- 35:53resonated through talk radio, through the newspaper that I did
- 35:57not get as I was growing up. I I certainly get it now, but
- 36:02in, you know, even in my opinion, I think everybody's
- 36:04pretty pretty level headed with them.
- 36:08You know, at least the people I listen to, so yeah.
- 36:11Yeah, I would. I would say so.
- 36:12I think part of it is living here rally and I specifically
- 36:18get crap or got crap because we wore gear because we went to
- 36:23games. We would walk around the grocery
- 36:26store and I would have somebody ask me what I what they should
- 36:29make for their wife for dinner because they see me on TV.
- 36:32And then after I help them, they say, oh and by the way, how can
- 36:36you support that ass one? How can you support Dan Snyder?
- 36:39And I loved what Antonio Gibson said.
- 36:41And today I talked to him at camp.
- 36:43He was playing catch with the fans in the stands along the
- 36:46sideline. That has never happened.
- 36:48I was at every day at camp last year, that has never happened.
- 36:51B Rob running up the sideline, high fiving everyone, Just the
- 36:54energy. Everyone just feels better.
- 36:56And yesterday during his press conference, Wednesday's press
- 36:59conference, you guys haven't listened to it of Antonio
- 37:01Gibson. He talked about how he would
- 37:04post something on social media. And fans would just reply
- 37:07arbitrarily with sell the team. I'm never coming back until he's
- 37:11gone this and that and just that negativity draws you down.
- 37:15So when Rally and I are walking around town, I'm walking in a
- 37:17grocery store, we're hanging out of the brewery and just doing
- 37:21what we do. Being you, just being you here
- 37:24locally. We will get crap for it.
- 37:26I literally sent an emotional text to who was it?
- 37:31Who the Hell's our team president Jason saying Jason,
- 37:34when the time is right. Please thank them for rescuing
- 37:38this fan base, giving us our team back and just making us
- 37:45feel safe walking around again. I have had people threaten me
- 37:50just because I'm a fan of this team, walking down the street
- 37:53throwing stuff and I know that stuff that you're not going to
- 37:56see and really experience unless you're in enemy territory and
- 37:59you're going to an Eagles game because.
- 38:01Much like you, I will wear my gear to an Eagles game I'm
- 38:03playing there. I don't care.
- 38:04I'm sure you do too. But that is all gone now and
- 38:09being in the stands today, you drove here 8 hours to watch a
- 38:15glorified excuse of a practice they had.
- 38:18They didn't even have shells on, they just had a jersey on and
- 38:21shorts and a helmet. But why did you do that?
- 38:26For what I kind of hit on earlier for the community
- 38:28because I get to see you guys. Yeah, I get to see all the other
- 38:32fans that came out today. I get to see so many people that
- 38:34I don't normally get to see. I get to meet new people that I
- 38:37interact with on social media. That becomes a community for me.
- 38:41It becomes family. I mean some of my closest
- 38:44friends I've met through this community.
- 38:47And you know even beyond that you I I get to talk to a lot of
- 38:51the people that I listen to on podcast.
- 38:53You know when you're looking at some of the media people and
- 38:55they're so generous with their time and they they talk to you.
- 38:58I I got to talk to Bram today for the first I've never I've
- 39:00spoken to Bram one other time but he took time out two
- 39:04different times. Sorry two different times today
- 39:06to just talk ball with me and you don't get that I I I that
- 39:11camaraderie. Means a lot to me.
- 39:13You know you grew up playing sports and you lose that most of
- 39:16us and we don't play past high school and you you kind of lose
- 39:20that. And to me that's that's a big
- 39:22part of my life and that's a big reason why I came here is just
- 39:24to be it. It wasn't.
- 39:25I don't get anything out of the practice.
- 39:26I only know what I'm watching half the time.
- 39:29You know, I try to isolate a guy or two.
- 39:32But the truth be told, I these guys, we all have opinions for
- 39:37sure. But I when I watch Sam Howell,
- 39:40I'm seeing it through a different lens than Eric.
- 39:42The enemy is. So you got to be careful, like
- 39:44what you're seeing and what you're suggesting and what your
- 39:47opinions might be, because you don't know what's really what,
- 39:50what's what's really happening. So for me, it's not so much
- 39:54seeing the team, although that's an awesome thing.
- 39:56That's an awesome perk while I'm here is to be able to watch them
- 39:59practice. Get to see him up close and
- 40:01personal. And I'm not like really the
- 40:02autograph guy, but just to be there and see these guys,
- 40:04they're real people. See how they interact with the
- 40:07kids. Terry Mclaurin, absolutely
- 40:08amazing, by the way, as was other people.
- 40:11Cody Barton, I don't know if you guys noticed him sat or stood
- 40:16over there and signed autographs probably for 30 minutes after
- 40:18practice and it was well beyond just autographs.
- 40:21He was engaging the kids and that's that's what it's about
- 40:24kids and trying to get that next generation that we've lost.
- 40:27Because we've lost a generation through all this dysfunction and
- 40:30losing at least one. Yeah, I'm working on two and we
- 40:33need these kids. And it was, Oh my God, I was
- 40:35standing on the sidelines after practice was over and Terry was
- 40:39over heading towards the towards the exit and had stopped to do
- 40:43autographs. And these two kids is that we're
- 40:45probably five or six years old. Oh my God, Terry Mclaurin's over
- 40:49there. He's signing on.
- 40:50Let's go. I mean, they were.
- 40:52That's what made me a fan as a kid.
- 40:54So hopefully players like John Allen and Terry Mclaurin, like
- 40:58those types of players, those culture guys that we have on the
- 41:01team now are going to feed what we've been missing for a long
- 41:06time and then we add this new ownership group.
- 41:08It's it's all a culture that's going to hopefully propel us
- 41:11into the next generation and we all can come together and get
- 41:16along and yeah, get along and root for the same team and
- 41:22understand we're all on the same team.
- 41:24Even if we might have a different opinion on the team,
- 41:26on the name or the direction of the organization, let's just
- 41:30let's just enjoy the ride, right?
- 41:32And I I sent out a tweet this morning.
- 41:34I was at a red light car was stopped.
- 41:36It was in park. But I I want to send it out.
- 41:38It's like it's it was 555 in the morning.
- 41:43Today felt like and tell me if you agree, but it felt like the
- 41:45first day of school. I'm driving myself to school at
- 41:50this point, but I'm driving myself out to Ashburn and I
- 41:52can't wait to be back out there with my classmates, my fellow
- 41:58fans, because we have all been apart from each other during
- 42:02summer break or the offseason. And it felt like that first day
- 42:05of school where you get to hang out and.
- 42:08Yes, it's school, but there's nothing but fun.
- 42:10Yes, we're sitting out in 90 degree heat.
- 42:12We're not actually doing anything, we're just standing
- 42:15around. But we were just around each
- 42:17other and that's all that mattered today.
- 42:20And to me, that's what the season is going to feel like.
- 42:25They will eventually get back to winning.
- 42:27They will eventually make us crowd on the field, but we can
- 42:31all now come back together as a fan base and heal from what
- 42:35we've been through. And then enjoy the fact that you
- 42:40and you and other people that were here have been here through
- 42:43thick and thin. And from my standpoint, welcome
- 42:47back. Those that left rally still on
- 42:49the fence about that. It's just, it's exciting.
- 42:55It's a new day. It's a new era in the energy.
- 42:59I haven't felt this energy from this fan base.
- 43:05I won't say ever. Been to 20 years of training
- 43:09care. I didn't go to the Super Bowls
- 43:11because I was too young and my family didn't have money.
- 43:14We didn't have seats at RFK because we were on the wait
- 43:16list. But I haven't missed a home game
- 43:20at FedEx Field since it opened. And I have not felt this energy,
- 43:25just positive energy. And I'd say 2012, but 2012, we
- 43:30still we had to win all those games to actually get in.
- 43:34We. Lost how many games in a row and
- 43:36they're basically punting the season at that point and then
- 43:39all of a sudden we turned it around.
- 43:40Turned it around. But this positivity right now,
- 43:43we always went off the field. We're winning off the field
- 43:45right now. But there's something different
- 43:47in that agree completely. We're winning off the field, but
- 43:53the positivity is different and that's the shift that I see and
- 43:58and something to echo what you said, going to the grocery
- 44:01store, I had a I went to Wawa yesterday and a guy says.
- 44:05I I know I've seen you you you're the guy and I and I said
- 44:10I said well thanks man. I appreciate it that the mere
- 44:12because I had on the commander's tshirt.
- 44:14Shocker. The fact is people are getting
- 44:18behind buying the gear. They're getting behind the
- 44:22positiveness, positivity and the positiveness that that this fan
- 44:27base and the ownership has brought.
- 44:30I love it, man. And if you guys can see.
- 44:33I love this shirt that you have on.
- 44:35He's got a Sean Taylor 2004 2007 shirt on and that speaks
- 44:40volumes, man. I love that shirt.
- 44:42I really do. Yeah.
- 44:43Love it too. I wish that they would sell that
- 44:45out in the team store. I was telling them and talking
- 44:47to some executives when I was leaving.
- 44:49It's like put the stuff in there.
- 44:52You know this stuff, a portion of it supposed to go towards his
- 44:55family from the charitable foundation.
- 44:56But you know, it reminded me of I was in the the Winter Classic.
- 45:02I organized the fan travel when the Capitals played the Penguins
- 45:05in Pittsburgh and the Caps beat the Pens.
- 45:08It was a long ass day and then the Redskins then played the
- 45:12Giants that next morning, so we had to drive home from
- 45:16Pittsburgh so I could just get to the stadium that morning.
- 45:18We're walking to the concourse hanging out and we're all
- 45:22arguing with each other as fans. Someone yelled and screamed out
- 45:26F the Flyers. Not as we're playing, but we
- 45:29could all agree on that. And then we all just kind of
- 45:33came together and it reminded me of that Burgundy and Soul party.
- 45:36And I'm sure we're talking early beginning of the show.
- 45:38It killed me not to be there. I'm sure it drove you crazy not
- 45:42to be a part of it and seeing everything on social media.
- 45:45But we can all agree that Dan is gone.
- 45:49It is a new era here in Washington.
- 45:51This fan base is rejuvenated. The sleeping giant has awoken
- 45:55and this fan base is ready. We just need those 53 guys on
- 45:59the field and those coaches to step up because we're right
- 46:03behind. Definitely.
- 46:06Yeah. I mean, it's completely well
- 46:07said. And for me, like the new
- 46:10ownership group is what gets me more excited than anything
- 46:13because I think we, I tweet this a lot and I say this a lot is we
- 46:17change. Just getting rid of Dan had to
- 46:20happen that was that was going to be an addition by subtraction
- 46:24that alone. But when you bring in a quality
- 46:27group that that that is large but made by design.
- 46:32These are smart businessmen experienced great with the
- 46:37community, great with revamping businesses, with growing
- 46:42businesses, with turning around businesses.
- 46:44These guys, Magic, Mitchell, Josh, they all bring something
- 46:52different and they all share the same vision and they are going
- 46:56to work together to give us the best possible product.
- 46:59And it's going to start by bringing in the best possible
- 47:01people and we'd have to trust them.
- 47:04We have to learn to trust and that's really hard when you've
- 47:06gone through a bad relationship, is to learn how to trust again,
- 47:09right? We have to learn how to be trust
- 47:11and be patient. A reporter asked me from WTOP
- 47:14what is the most that I expect and I said I just want them to
- 47:18be honest. Just be honest.
- 47:20If you can't do it, say you can't do it.
- 47:22Don't smoke up our butts. Be honest with the fan base and
- 47:26after you're honest with us, give us a reason or what you
- 47:30want to try to do to fix it. Honesty, as they always say, is
- 47:34the best policy. Tim, thank you for showing up,
- 47:37man. We really appreciate it, man.
- 47:38It's an honor to be here with you 2 fellas.
- 47:41I appreciate you having me on. Yeah, I mean, we see you at the
- 47:43games, but I'm busy. Don't get a chance to really
- 47:46talk and hang out, so it's great.
- 47:49One last question for you. Will you be at Opening day?
- 47:52Oh, come on now. Come on now.
- 47:56I. Got to ask.
- 47:57I'm there, I'm there. I would not miss that.
- 47:59If I couldn't get a ticket for some reason, I'd be in the
- 48:01parking lot, I'd be at Ted's tailgate and we're going to have
- 48:04a good old time. There's a reason you can't get a
- 48:06ticket. I got four.
- 48:07Yeah, one has always got your name.
- 48:09I appreciate that. Love you.
- 48:11We'll see you in a few weeks. Definitely.
- 48:13We'll see you.
