- 0:05Sunny Mornings in Boston. I'm your host, Melissa,
- 0:09and it's Tuesday, January 13th. You'll be interested
- 0:13to know. 69 years ago, today in 1957, a pair
- 0:20of playful entrepreneurs shaped a molded plastic
- 0:23disc into the frisbee, turning a simple toss
- 0:26into a widely loved recreational flying toy at
- 0:29parks and beaches. That inventive leap popularized
- 0:33casual outdoor play, inspired organized flying
- 0:36disc sports, and established a cultural icon
- 0:39of mid -20th century. So now you know. And now,
- 0:45it's time for the weather report. This morning,
- 0:51it's mostly sunny, and it feels like 25 degrees,
- 0:55with 6 mile per hour wind. The sunset will take
- 1:00place at 434, and it will rise again tomorrow
- 1:02at 708. It looks like we're in for a sunny Tuesday,

- 2:48news, in a significant development, 12 towns
- 2:52in Massachusetts have failed to meet the zoning
- 2:55deadline mandated by the MBTA Communities Act,
- 2:59which aims to facilitate multifamily housing
- 3:01near public transit. These towns include Carver,
- 3:06Drackett, East Bridgewater, Freetown, Halifax,
- 3:09Holden, Marblehead, Middleton, Rehoboth, Ticksbury,
- 3:14Wilmington, and Winthrop. and they now face potential
- 3:17lawsuits from the Attorney General's office and
- 3:20loss of state grant funding. While some local
- 3:24leaders express uncertainty about the future,
- 3:27others are actively working on proposals to comply
- 3:29with the law. The ongoing tension between local
- 3:33control and state mandates continues to shake
- 3:36the conversation around housing in these communities.
- 3:44Now on to sports. Last night, the Houston Texans
- 3:48dominated the Pittsburgh Steelers, winning their
- 3:51wild -card matchup 30 -6. Despite their quarterback
- 3:56struggling and their star receiver leaving on
- 3:58a card, Houston's defense excelled, marking the
- 4:02franchise's first road playoff victory. Aaron
- 4:05Rodgers, facing relentless pressure, threw for
- 4:08only 146 yards, with the Steelers suffering their
- 4:12ninth consecutive postseason loss. CJ Stroud
- 4:17managed 250 yards, but struggled with turnovers,
- 4:21while Christian Kirk excelled with 144 yards
- 4:25on eight receptions. As the off -season approaches,
- 4:29uncertain delumes for the Steelers and Rodgers,
- 4:31who may not return in 2026. In local sports,
- 4:38Pascal Seacom scored 21 points, including the
- 4:41decisive seven -foot bank shot with 6 .1 seconds
- 4:44remaining, leading the Indiana Pacers to a victory
- 4:48over the Celtics, 98 -96 on Monday night. Derek
- 4:54White missed a go -ahead three -point attempt
- 4:56in the final seconds after tying the game at
- 4:5996 -all on a driving layup with 28 .6 seconds
- 5:03remaining. The Cs were without leading scorer
- 5:07Jalen Brown, who set out with lower back spasms
- 5:11and was fined $35 ,000 for criticizing referees.
- 5:15Up next, the Celtics will face Miami on Thursday.
- 5:21In top news, America is trying to determine if
- 5:24it has hit Keek Pizza. Once the second most common
- 5:28restaurant type in the United States, pizzerias
- 5:31are now outnumbered by coffee shops and Mexican
- 5:34food eateries. According to industry data, sales
- 5:39growth at pizza restaurants has failed to keep
- 5:41pace with the broader fast food market for years.
- 5:45Ravi Thanwala, chief financial officer and North
- 5:49America president at Papa John's International
- 5:52stated, pizza is disrupted right now. Major chains
- 5:57like Pizza Hut and Papa John's are considering
- 6:00strategic changes, including potential sales
- 6:03amid increasing competition and evolving consumer
- 6:06preferences. Pizza still generates around $31
- 6:10billion in sales. but its dominance in American
- 6:14dining is fading. In business news, the Justice
- 6:20Department has threatened the Federal Reserve
- 6:22with a criminal indictment over testimony from
- 6:25Fed Chair Jerome Powell regarding renovations
- 6:28Powell revealed over the weekend. This marks
- 6:31a significant escalation by the administration
- 6:34after President Donald Trump's efforts to exert
- 6:37more control over the independent institution.
- 6:41Trump has criticized Powell for not cutting short
- 6:44-term interest rates and has even threatened
- 6:46to fire him. Powell described the threat of criminal
- 6:50charges as pretext aimed at undermining the Fed's
- 6:54independence. Investors are closely watching
- 6:57as an attempt to fire Powell could lead to falling
- 7:00stock prices and higher borrowing costs across
- 7:03the economy. In crypto movement, Bitcoin is down
- 7:091 % to just over $91 ,000. Ethereum is down 2
- 7:15% to $3 ,000. And XRP is down 1 % to $2 .06.

- 8:16of the James Webb Space Telescope. The James
- 8:20Webb Space Telescope, launched in 2021 at a cost
- 8:23of more than $10 billion, aims to identify potentially
- 8:28habitable worlds around distant stars. Pandora,
- 8:32a smaller satellite, launched early Sunday from
- 8:35Vandenberg Space Force Base in California with
- 8:38a budget of $20 million. It will help scientists
- 8:41better analyze exoplanets and their atmospheres,
- 8:45correcting measurements affected by stellar signals.
- 8:49Pandora will observe 20 selected exoplanets,
- 8:52collecting valuable data to enhance our understanding
- 8:55of life beyond Earth. And in entertainment news...
- 9:02This actor just dethroned Scarlett Johansson
- 9:05as the highest -grossing movie star at the box
- 9:08office. Zoe Saldana now sits atop the list of
- 9:12highest -grossing actors with a massive total
- 9:15of nearly $17 billion at the worldwide box office.
- 9:20Scarlett Johansson's reign at the box office
- 9:22is over for now. The latest film in the Avatar
- 9:27series, Avatar, Fire and Ash, officially crossed
- 9:31$1 billion $200 million as of January 12th. But
- 9:36Johansson now holds the second position with
- 9:39$16 .4 billion. Well, all righty, folks. It's
- 9:44time for the quote of the day. And today, our
- 9:48quote comes from the American author and motivational
- 9:51speaker, Sig Ziegler. And he said, success means
- 9:56doing the best we can with what we have. Success
- 9:59is the doing, not the getting. And the trying,
- 10:02not the triumph. Success is a personal standard,
- 10:06reaching for the highest that is in us, becoming
- 10:08all that we can be. And that's a wrap for this
