- 1:04do it. So I am so glad that this
- 1:08happened and you were super flexible and could work with me
- 1:11on this because this was not the intention when I first started

- 1:18podcast episode on Pivot. Like that was not gonna happen.
- 1:22So I'm really appreciative of you and I'm so glad that your
- 1:25first time on Pivot is with this giant big ass show.

- 1:33I wasn't even planning to watch this show and I was funny story
- 1:40how I even like I pretty much. Long story short, not to be like
- 1:44a pick me, but I was in Korea, I was at a chicken shop and on the
- 1:48TV was playing my dearest. And so I was like, oh, I was
- 1:52like, oh, that's my dearest whatever, eating my chicken 10
- 1:56minutes. And I'm like like watching him.
- 1:57Oh heck no. I gotta go back to the Airbnb
- 2:00and watch it. Yeah.
- 2:03Wow. So you literally were in Korea,
- 2:05saw some of my dearest on the television in a public place,
- 2:09and we're like, I need to go back to my bedroom?
- 2:12Yep. And get going watching this
- 2:14drama from episode one episode. Is that good?
- 2:17It was episode 18. No.
- 2:19Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes, yes. I was like, what is going on?
- 2:25Oh, heck no. Now I have to watch it.

- 3:37Which we will remains to be seen what that is, but that's going
- 3:40to show up on the Patreon feed as well.
- 3:42OK, so without further ado, we're going to talk about my
- 3:46dear, both parts of My Dearest, Part One and Part 2, the show as
- 3:49a whole. And here is the My Drama List
- 3:52synopsis, a love story between a noble woman and a mysterious man
- 3:55who shows up in her hometown. Set in the 1600s during the Qing
- 3:59invasion, Yukichi is a pretty bubbly and and a bit spoiled
- 4:03young lady who's called the 99 tailed fox of Nungungui.
- 4:07She is also a a bit of an outcast because other young
- 4:10ladies are jealous of her. They seem to think she's too
- 4:12straightforward and her behavior is inappropriate for a young
- 4:14lady. While young noblemen think
- 4:17highly of her, Kilche knows how to get men to fall for her, but
- 4:20fails to capture the heart of the person she likes.
- 4:23EI Dong Hyun is a mysterious man who suddenly appears in the
- 4:27Nungun Liu social scene. Nobody really knows anything
- 4:29about him. Young nobles don't like him, but
- 4:32the elderly are wrapped around his finger.
- 4:34He's been dating around a lot, but he becomes curious about a
- 4:36certain 99 tailed fox, and one day the said fox, quite
- 4:39literally crash lands into his arms.
- 4:42Once war is brewing, the pair finds themselves separated
- 4:45before they could even start to make sense of their feelings,
- 4:48and it spins out from there. OK, that's a little bit more
- 4:52Part 1 synopsis, but that's fine.
- 4:54It applies to both. Part 1 aired from August to
- 4:58September 2023, there was a five week break, and then Part 2
- 5:02aired from October to November 2023.
- 5:05We are recording this at the very beginning of December, so
- 5:07we are hot on the heels of the finale episodes.
- 5:11It is 21 episodes long, 10 for part one and 11 episodes for
- 5:17Part 2. It was directed by Kim Sung
- 5:19Yong. He has directed The Veil, which
- 5:22also stars Nam Kunmin, My Healing Love and The Flower in
- 5:26prison from 2016. That is it.
- 5:29That is all this director has done.
- 5:31Yeah, I know. It's wild.
- 5:35No, it's wild. I think it's wild for him to
- 5:38have done like just big show. And this person only has three
- 5:43shows under their belt. It's wild.
- 5:46OK. It is written by Huang Jing
- 5:48Yong. This female screenwriter has
- 5:52written The Rebel from 2017 and The King's daughter Sue Beck
- 5:55Young from 20/13/2014. And that's it.
- 5:59Those are the only two shows that she's written.
- 6:02The Rebel was six years ago. Whoa.
- 6:06Big gap between now and her last project.
- 6:10Wow, that. Yeah.
- 6:12Well, already then. OK, that was not we're.
- 6:14Already like I know I. Was not expecting OK already.
- 6:20I know, I know. The show stars Nam Kumin as
- 6:25Yisang Hyun, our male lead. He's done about 26 television
- 6:30shows, including most recently $1.00 Lawyer and the Veil Hot
- 6:34Stove, Lead doctor Prisoner. I remember him from Chung Dong
- 6:38Dong Alice and becoming a millionaire, a billionaire girl.
- 6:42What did you think? Did you watch him in that?
- 6:47I am bad with names. Alice with Moon Gun Young.
- 6:51Uh huh. Yeah.
- 6:52That's the one that I remember him from.
- 6:54Yeah, yeah. Which is basically a decade ago.
- 6:58Yep, so. I haven't seen anything else
- 7:03that he's in recently. Same thing.
- 7:05OK, OK, so we're basically on the same page, yeah.
- 7:08Yep. He's a star of yesteryear who is
- 7:12now, has had a career resurgence in the last few years and
- 7:15they're in the pandemic years, Yeah.
- 7:18And I'm like, who's? Strange.
- 7:20Before I recognize them. Who's that guy?
- 7:22But yeah. Who's that guy?
- 7:26So his Co star is Anand Jin, who plays Yukichi.
- 7:30She's had a very good year because she was in the good bad
- 7:33mother earlier in 2023, which was a very popular show.
- 7:38Everyone was pretty pleased with her performance in that.
- 7:40I have yet to watch it. I will watch it in the next
- 7:42couple of weeks because, yeah, So what happens is every
- 7:48December, I think that I can watch all of the year's dramas
- 7:53in like the span of a month. Same.
- 7:56And because I have a couple of guest recordings that I'm doing,
- 8:00I am gonna freaking try my bit. I'm gonna try and come in as
- 8:05prepared as possible and so I'm trying to watch the whole year
- 8:07inside two weeks. And that's why I say I will
- 8:10probably have watched the good, bad Mother, the Good, bad mother
- 8:13in the next couple of weeks. She's also been in Goodbye
- 8:16Earth, the One and Only, which is Diner.
- 8:19I know her from hospital playlist.
- 8:21She's one of the doctors, not one of the main doctors, but you
- 8:24know, in the hospital. OK, yeah, she looked.
- 8:28Does that make sense? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 8:31Yeah. So she's in Hospital, playlist
- 8:32one and two, Diary of a Prosecutor, Strangers from Hell
- 8:36from 2019. I think her career really
- 8:40started in 2019 and going through the pandemic years and
- 8:44of course this year was like basically her coming out party.
- 8:48Yes, definitely. Mm hmm.
- 8:51So this cast is pretty extensive.
- 8:53I'm only going to cover those two.
- 8:54There's other names that we will definitely touch on in the show,
- 8:59but for now, Sorai, what did you think of my dearest?
- 9:04Oh man, that is a scary question.
- 9:06No, I'm just kidding. How do I start and where do I
- 9:11begin? Because I.
- 9:13Girl, I don't know. You're like, get out with it.
- 9:17I do not know. So OK, it's really hard without
- 9:26spoiling it. Now that I now that I'm here,
- 9:29right now, now that I think about it, I'm just like, crap.
- 9:36OK, so at first, I like I said before, I wasn't planning on
- 9:42watching it. However, I was kind of feeling
- 9:46like a Sega drama. I was kind of like Craving 1.
- 9:49And then when I watched it, I was like, oh, this is what I
- 9:53kind of was looking for. Like I was, yes, this is
- 9:57satisfying my craving, my historical Sega drama, too much
- 10:03going on craving. Yeah.
- 10:06So I I actually really, I watching it through.
- 10:09I loved it. I definitely binged it.
- 10:13I do have my some qualms obviously towards the ending,
- 10:18but I think the big thing is that it was something that I was
- 10:22looking for through this year. And I think when I watched, I
- 10:26was like, this is what I've been looking for because this year
- 10:30was kind of weird with dramas. It was like dramas.
- 10:34I I was watching dramas that I I felt like I should like, but
- 10:37then realized I don't think I'm liking these dramas.
- 10:40And then here comes this one. I wasn't expecting much and I
- 10:43was like, oh, this is big. It was a big one.
- 10:47So, yeah, those are my overall thoughts overall.
- 10:52OK, in a nutshell, OK, I'll go a little.
- 10:55I'll go a tiny bit into spoiler territory.
- 10:58Not that much though, not that much.
- 11:01I How do I put this? I didn't start watching until
- 11:06Part 2 had come out, started airing.
- 11:09What is it like 2 episodes a week for Part 2?
- 11:11And then I was like, OK, I'm going to start watching part one
- 11:13and just go straight into Part 2 because I didn't want to wait
- 11:17for episodes. I'm not.
- 11:19I never want to wait for episodes.
- 11:22So this show is so sweeping and so immensely scaled.
- 11:31It's an epic about survival and love.
- 11:34That is the word it's. Yes, it's a gripping storyline.
- 11:39I thought it was sensational. The backdrop of real historical
- 11:44events, the Ching invasion of the 17th century makes the
- 11:47stakes higher, the plot more intense, and I appreciated so
- 11:53many elements that make a drama worth watching, like the great
- 11:57acting, the amazing cinematography, the direction,
- 12:01the writing, my own personal investment in the characters and
- 12:05their growth throughout the series.
- 12:07So many characters saw real change, had arcs, and there is
- 12:14so much commentary that this show does.
- 12:17Deep commentary on gender roles and double standards.
- 12:21Heavy-handed criticism of Confucian ideals and the demands
- 12:26that women be sexually pure victim blaming.
- 12:29In so many ways, I thought that the show was a love letter to
- 12:35the resilience and fortitude of women as they battle like a very
- 12:40internal fight with the fallacy of the patriarchy.
- 12:43And it's so much about sticking together for survival, about
- 12:47being too smart for the era, about that's.
- 12:50A good one. Yeah, yeah.
- 12:53Because they're so smart and and yes and about being the backbone
- 12:59of society when the men tell them that they're so much less.
- 13:03And the only people who actually achieve this dominating
- 13:08Confucian ideal of maintaining loyalty and protecting the
- 13:12family are the women the men like lack throughout the show.
- 13:20Like almost every man except for the male lead is like has some
- 13:24sort of issue that you're like. That's a red flag, even if it is
- 13:29very historically fitting. So I felt like the men and the
- 13:34patriarchy are just taken to task in the show.
- 13:37It holds up a giant mirror to those characters with lofty
- 13:42morals and dreams of serving the nation.
- 13:45These self-proclaimed intellectuals or scholars who
- 13:49get called on their bluff like the plot itself calls them out
- 13:54on their bluff over and over again.
- 13:56And it reminded me a lot of, like, keyboard warriors today.
- 14:01Everyone can be brave online or, you know, when you're talking
- 14:05shit with like your friends and stuff with people in the
- 14:08society, with your teachers and family.
- 14:11But what these people risk it all on a real battlefield, say.
- 14:16That again, girl. Sorry, sorry.
- 14:21It's like, I can't look at you when I say these things because
- 14:24you're like excited and you're like talking me up.
- 14:28It's funny. Excuse me?
- 14:29My. Excuse me.
- 14:31I'm sorry, I get overexcited. My no.
- 14:33No, no, but. Like I said, commentary.
- 14:35It's OK. It's OK.
- 14:37I feel like I'm in church. Like does that make any sense?
- 14:39So it's like, yes, like you're that's right, talking up the
- 14:42passage. So thank you.
- 14:45So. It's like, I mean you're facing
- 14:47right now, so OK. I'm almost done.
- 14:49I swear, no, this is general. Thoughts.
- 14:52I don't know how I was, like, everything you're talking about
- 14:54I felt like was a spoiler, but you just did it beautifully
- 14:56right now, so yeah. I'm not naming names, basically.
- 15:01That's all. I'm not doing.
- 15:06Beautiful. Let me see.
- 15:07It's it's a very grim sometimes sarcastic look at the monarchy
- 15:14and the political system and these traumatic ways of holding
- 15:23national preservation and self-image above human life.
- 15:29And we can talk about the king later and his son and this whole
- 15:34drama. But you know it's like the show
- 15:38also showcases national anguish. Yes.
- 15:43Which is tough to do, right. I think it's tough to do.
- 15:46Like there's some movies that you can see it like if you're
- 15:50it's around 4th of July, these right.
- 15:51There's like these movies that have these really deep
- 15:56patriotism overtones and you feel like a certain way.
- 16:02There's also movies that show national anguish.
- 16:06What's a movie? It's like Schindler's List I
- 16:09feel is a great movie that shows.
- 16:12When I say great movie, like that movie swept at the Oscars,
- 16:15it's like an iconic Holocaust movie.
- 16:18Spielberg did it the same year, Jurassic Park.
- 16:20It's wild. And that movie has a lot of
- 16:25cultural national anguish in it. And this show does that really
- 16:31well. You know, Let me see.
- 16:35There's LGBTQ plus representation in this, which we
- 16:38have to talk about later with that character.
- 16:42But I feel like overall, the show is a masterpiece and you
- 16:47could write a thesis on it if you wanted to.
- 16:50Not that I want to, but I think a lot of people, I don't want to
- 16:57say it's underrated, but when I was looking online for people
- 17:01who had thoughts about my dearest, there were not a lot of
- 17:04people because they don't watch historicals.
- 17:07Yeah, like there's a whole subset of people in in K Drama
- 17:12Land that don't watch Saguks or historicals, and that blows my
- 17:17mind that. Definitely, yeah.
- 17:19Because I'm like how? If you're looking like I'm like,
- 17:23talk to me, talk to. Me how can you?
- 17:24As I was watching the show I was like like how can people not
- 17:29watch like this is what got me into K dramas like exact.
- 17:36I'm speechless right now. I'm speechless.
- 17:38But I I'm just like, how can you not?
- 17:41This is my own personal opinion because I I was talking to
- 17:43myself like how can how can you not like this right here?
- 17:47Like because the reason why I got into K dramas was definitely
- 17:52the culture, even though I didn't understand that at all
- 17:56because I was so young and my frontal lobe wasn't fully
- 17:59developed. But but I loved like seeing
- 18:04something different, you know, and I loved in general, I love
- 18:07period pieces. So even in American films, I
- 18:10love period pieces. So I think it's just amusing, I
- 18:14think because I love just historical period pieces and and
- 18:19I feel like there's something more more romantic and more like
- 18:24land and like how you said epic seeing all that and seeing how
- 18:30how love happened in that era because it's easier now and it's
- 18:35kind of, But back then especially in that type of
- 18:38culture, I always think like, how do they do it?
- 18:41Because literally I'm like, do they do they even have boyfriend
- 18:45girlfriend. Obviously they didn't have
- 18:47boyfriend girlfriend and Joe Sinera.
- 18:50Absolutely not. Like, it's like you're engaged
- 18:52and that's it, you know. And a lot of the times you don't
- 18:55even know who your husband is or who your wife is.
- 18:58And so just to see for me, I'm like, Oh my gosh, now that you
- 19:01can definitely do like a a epic love story with that, doing
- 19:06something that goes against all odds, which I'm a sucker for.
- 19:11Yeah, they're star crossed lovers for for all intents and
- 19:14purposes. I were so emotional.
- 19:21So yeah, yeah, they're star crossed lovers.
- 19:23I think 100% they are. And what I liked about the show
- 19:27as well is that you couldn't tell if it was going to have a
- 19:30happy ending or not. It was.
- 19:32It kept you guessing until the last minute if it was going to
- 19:35happen or not. It did the only thing, OK, yeah.
- 19:42That's rare, right? Like, you can pretty much watch
- 19:45a Cage drama and be like, that's going to happen, yeah.
- 19:47That's true, right? This.
- 19:49This one you start watching and you're like this could go
- 19:52anywhere either. Way, Yeah.
- 19:55Anywhere. No one's safe.
- 19:57No one's safe. No one is safe.
- 20:00That's how I felt, like nobody's safe.
- 20:02They could. All die like smallpox.
- 20:05That could happen again and they all died like you don't know.
- 20:10Yeah, like all they need is a little cough, cough from
- 20:13somebody with tuberculosis or the smallpox and that's it.
- 20:17Like the? End.
- 20:18That's the end of that character.
- 20:21They tell me they died. I'd be like, well, that that
- 20:24tracks, you know, like there's nothing they could do which.
- 20:27Well, I'll say that later, but yeah.
- 20:31I know there's like a lot of like, land spoiler landmines
- 20:34that we're trying to avoid. But let's talk about this
- 20:37filming schedule, because I put on an APB on Instagram and
- 20:40TikTok for people to send in their questions or concerns,
- 20:43things that they wanted us to talk about.
- 20:45Topics, characters, scenes, whatever.
- 20:48And I got AI got a little inundated.
- 20:50So we're going to make our way through these as much as
- 20:53possible. Someone said the crazy filming
- 20:57schedule slash extension episode 21 extended version.
- 21:00They'd filmed for 11 months, but we're still shooting the night
- 21:04before episode 21 and it snowed. Also, Vicki has updated episode
- 21:0821 deleted scenes. Some people probably never saw.
- 21:12The updated 21 also changed the last OST on the beach.
- 21:16Why? So a few things in that that we
- 21:20can break down. The filming schedule was crazy.
- 21:23They were filming for 9 or 10 months, right?
- 21:26Basically the almost the whole year, the whole of 2023 they
- 21:30were filming this. Show I can still see that
- 21:33though. And I can see it because there
- 21:36was a lot of, like, battle scenes, a ton of extras.
- 21:41When you add these things together, this is time.
- 21:44This is Money, right? Because they're hiring all of
- 21:47these people to be in one shot, you know what I'm saying?
- 21:50In one. Little like 2 second.
- 21:53Scene, right, right. So there was a lot of logistics,
- 21:56I'm sure that happened. Costuming that had to be done
- 22:00and they, I think NBC announced that they were going to be
- 22:05extending the drama by one episode because of its
- 22:07popularity, so. Crazy.
- 22:10Yeah, it was leading the ratings in its time slot, ranking first
- 22:14in drama popularity for three consecutive weeks.
- 22:16And then they were like, we got to keep these good vibes
- 22:19rolling. Let's go to 21 episodes, milk it
- 22:22to the end. Yeah, let's milk it.
- 22:25And of course, no one was upset. I was a little scared because
- 22:28whenever they extend the episode for.
- 22:30Sure. I'm like, oh God, I hope they
- 22:32don't ruin it. Yeah, same same girl, same.
- 22:36They did that last year for the red sleeve which went to 17
- 22:40episodes, and this year they did it for my Dears, which went to
- 22:4421 instead of 20. They said that they also wanted
- 22:49to influenced by the desire to fully unfold the story and
- 22:53satisfy the dedicated fans who want to enjoy it for longer.
- 22:57Weird way of saying that they wanted to get more money out of
- 23:00it, but OK on as far as filming until the last moment.
- 23:08On November 15th, this outlet reported that My Dears will
- 23:11conduct its final filming on November 16th, just a day before
- 23:15the broadcast of the last two episodes, which was on November
- 23:1817th and 18th. Subsequently, another outlet
- 23:22shared that the drama is expected to.
- 23:24I know. I'm like, sorry my commentary.
- 23:27Well, it is shocking because you don't expect them to be doing
- 23:31that in this day and age, filming so close to the airing
- 23:35date. But they did.
- 23:37And then this other outlet shared that they were expected
- 23:40to conclude final filming in the early morning of November 18th.
- 23:45That's the date. Like, that's the day of the last
- 23:49episode. When did they have time to edit?
- 23:53Well, that's the whole thing, right?
- 23:55That was the magic of K dramas back in the day, or the trauma
- 23:58of Cage dramas was that they would film week to week and they
- 24:04would edit and write the episodes on the fly based on
- 24:07audience reaction. And now they largely don't do
- 24:11that. And you can see how much time
- 24:13and effort Part one and the bulk of Part 2 took to get here.
- 24:18And then the last two episodes, I'm sure they were editing and
- 24:22cutting and filming up until the last second.
- 24:27So that might contribute to some of our nitpicks, I'm sure.
- 24:32Like we can pick some nits about this show, let me tell you.
- 24:36Yeah. For.
- 24:38Sure. Uh, huh.
- 24:38So this show also had a bunch of controversy, most most notably
- 24:44the plagiarism controversy with Gone With the Wind.
- 24:47So in a report cited by a news portal, screenwriter Huang Jing
- 24:53Young shared that My Dearest was planned for five years, and she
- 24:58had said prior that I wanted to write stories of ordinary people
- 25:03who are trapped in a tragic situation.
- 25:06I didn't even dare to start writing the script, because the
- 25:09Qing invasion is undeniably this history of defeat.
- 25:12But the novel Gone With the Wind inspired me to start writing
- 25:15casually. So she openly said that Gone
- 25:19With the Wind was an inspiration for her and people were like,
- 25:24oh, this is plagiarism. It's the same story, blah blah
- 25:27blah. And I wouldn't go so far as to
- 25:29say it's it's plagiarism. I would say she took the broad
- 25:36strokes of Gone With the Wind for sure and sort of like the
- 25:39bones of it and re skinned it. This is a retelling, a loose
- 25:43retelling. That's how it was sold to me as
- 25:45well when I was reading up on Gone With the Wind.
- 25:47It's like, right, Not Gone With the Wind.
- 25:48When I was reading Up on My Dearest was that it was a loose
- 25:51retelling of Gone With the Wind and I thought, oh, this is going
- 25:55to be crazy. Yeah, yeah.
- 25:58When I first heard that, it was like Gone with the Wind.
- 26:02I was like, what? What would it look like?
- 26:08Like what? So I was kind of, I was a little
- 26:10bit concerned because I literally thought it was like an
- 26:13like an adaptation. Like, literally, Like, they took
- 26:17Gone With the Wind and they're just doing it all like, you
- 26:20know, in just an era. But when I watched it, I
- 26:23honestly didn't get those vibes. Was I looking for those vibes?
- 26:26Yes. Was I looking for like, OK,
- 26:29Who's Who or whatever? Like, yeah.
- 26:31But then towards, like, as I kept watching, I kind of forgot
- 26:33about Gone With the Wind. I'm not going to lie.
- 26:35By Part 2, though, the plot was not the same as Gone with the
- 26:42Wind. Like, Again, broad strokes are
- 26:44there. The character archetypes are
- 26:46there for sure, but as far as like where they took the plot,
- 26:51no, that's not the same as Gone With THE Wind.
- 26:53So I can't really subscribe to the fact that she plagiarized
- 26:56Gone With The Wind. Like get Off, Get out of that.
- 26:58Like, did you watch? Settle down.
- 27:00Did you watch the show? #1 #2 Have you?
- 27:03This is a big #2. Have you watched Gone with the
- 27:06Wind? I think the answer is yes.
- 27:07Yeah, but like like with my. No, you don't need to say.
- 27:13What? You watched.
- 27:13You watched it. OK, because what I didn't know
- 27:18until interacting with people on social media was that a lot of
- 27:23people have not seen or read Gone With the Wind AM.
- 27:27I that. Old and that alarmed me and it
- 27:30baffled me it. Doesn't know Gone.
- 27:33I was like you. That's what I That's what I
- 27:36said. I was like you don't have any
- 27:38clue about the story. Clark Gable Every ROM Com and.
- 27:44Literally I was like this. OK, the big dresses like.
- 27:49I know, I know. Like we're we're on.
- 27:52The same piece, But yeah, we're looking at each other's shot.
- 27:57So Clark Gable as Rhett Butler. Vivian Lee as Scarlett O'Hara,
- 28:011939 Best Picture winner, swept the Oscars.
- 28:05Who doesn't know who's? Such an important Who doesn't
- 28:08know Scarlett O'Hare? So anyway, it is such an
- 28:11important part of film history and it's wildly controversial
- 28:16snapshot of the pre and post American Civil War South in
- 28:20regards to its portrayal of slavery.
- 28:21So with that being said, my dearest does showcase a ton of
- 28:28slavery, yes, even in a tangent, tangential way, sexual slavery
- 28:34as well. But this is like a big question,
- 28:37so if you want to answer it later, that's fine.
- 28:41I wonder if we can draw any conclusions from this, like,
- 28:45especially as a Western audience, as to how Korea feels
- 28:48about it enslaving its own people no matter the colour of
- 28:52their skin and the ching enslaving Koreans.
- 28:56Like perhaps the political approach taken by the Royals in
- 29:00the show is the biggest sin. I don't know.
- 29:05Like, did you have any thoughts about the portrayal of slavery
- 29:09in this show in My dearest? Can I say it without?
- 29:13Like, should I wait for later? I'll say this though, like I
- 29:22think it was very I think it was insane exactly what you said.
- 29:26How? I'll wait for later.
- 29:29I'll wait for later. You'll wait for later.
- 29:31OK, we'll circle back to the slavery question.
- 29:34Here's also what I'll say in regards to Gone with the Wind.
- 29:36So what my dearest, does extremely well, which feels very
- 29:43gone with the Windish, is bring to life a world of Fair maidens
- 29:48and brave men, of gallantry and chivalry and civility, of master
- 29:55and slave. As the opening of Gone with the
- 29:57Wind says, it's a world of flower picking festivals, much
- 30:01like the elaborate barbecue on a plantation at the beginning of
- 30:06Gone with the Wind. It's about it has these like my
- 30:10Dears has these Technicolor silk on handbooks and these scenes of
- 30:14just It's like a utopia for the elite, for the nobility.
- 30:19And it's a world that even by the end of the show never
- 30:24reappears. It dies.
- 30:28And it's a historical study, true too, of the Qing invasion
- 30:33and its effects on Tolson. It's people at all levels and
- 30:37the future of that of Korea. And just like the beginning of
- 30:42Gone with the Wind says it's a civilization Gone with the wind.
- 30:47That is. What's magical and interesting
- 30:49too, about the show is that these people lose their way of
- 30:54life, but they still have slaves.
- 30:57Yep. Yeah.
- 31:00Sorry, I'm. Just.
- 31:03Like yeah and and that's exactly what I was feeling when I as I
- 31:06was watching like especially towards the end like they're
- 31:09literally they don't even they're obviously divided you
- 31:13know and easily easily divided within themselves and that's
- 31:18exactly what the like I I I apologize if I offend anyone or
- 31:23if I say something incorrectly just because I'm really bad with
- 31:26names and I'm not I like watching historical stuff but
- 31:29I'm not a historical person so that's.
- 31:31It's hypocritical of me. Oh yeah.
- 31:33Yes, thanks. Please help me.
- 31:35But I just it was exactly, exactly what you said like the
- 31:39fact that they I just, I thought it was interesting how they kind
- 31:45of they were they were they thought that the Ching, which
- 31:50they did brought them down but it was within themselves because
- 31:53of I guess well it's a. Spoiler They caused division.
- 31:58They caused division without even causing division.
- 32:01They did 'cause major division, but they also did the more like
- 32:05the emotional and mental intelligence, division between
- 32:08themselves, especially with the Crown Prince and the king, and
- 32:12you know what I'm saying? And and then even within the
- 32:15people themselves. Right.
- 32:19It exasperated issues that were already there.
- 32:23So yeah, it's it's, it's interesting to say the least, to
- 32:29see how it all unfolds and to see what the effects are on the
- 32:35regular people, on the nobility, on the women who have gone
- 32:39through this terrible, terrible ordeal to the slaves and the
- 32:43people that are still captive in the chain as well.
- 32:49You know, how are they, which like are how are they
- 32:52negotiating to get them out of this?
- 32:55Because these are citizens of of Tolson.
- 32:59So that is crazy. And it is very close Cleaves,
- 33:07very close to Gone With the Wind territory, especially the
- 33:11juxtaposition of the beginning and the end of the show, you're
- 33:15like, this is a whole new world they did not get back.
- 33:17It almost you know. Where they were.
- 33:20They were in a glass castle and it was completely broken because
- 33:24like nobility and like, so all my terms are gone today,
- 33:31apparently. But like, you know, like they're
- 33:34like the they're, gosh, you know, the confusion, the ideals
- 33:40of like, they have to be there has to be nobility.
- 33:43There has to be like, you know, there has to be that separation
- 33:46when it came to the that war and the, you know, the the invasion,
- 33:50all that stuff. It didn't matter who you were
- 33:53once. It leveled everybody.
- 33:54Like, especially when when someone who was a noble woman
- 34:00got captured, it didn't matter. Yes, even though she was saying
- 34:05I'm a noble woman, I'm a noble woman.
- 34:06They're like and especially when she set foot in Shimyang.
- 34:11So like, you're in Shimyang, Justin doesn't matter anymore.
- 34:15Which is, to me, I was like, wow.
- 34:17Like, they literally were in a glass castle of like very
- 34:22conservative. And then this happened.
- 34:24And then everything starts shattering and they start
- 34:28shattering mentally. And yeah, obviously the key.
- 34:31Yeah, so. So yeah, I I think that's also a
- 34:38big part of the show and a parallel with Gone With the
- 34:41Wind. The other controversy for my
- 34:45dearest was I think in earlier like May 2023, NBC had to sever
- 34:51ties with an external company supplying the background actors,
- 34:54which we've mentioned earlier. There were a ton of background
- 34:56actors on the show following the revelation that this actor had a
- 35:02sexual assault case back in 2004.
- 35:05A background actor and they basically hired someone who
- 35:08basically was blacklisted, was supposed to be blacklisted in
- 35:11the in the industry and I don't know, along along with the
- 35:16plagiarism, which didn't seem very fair, but this one I was
- 35:20like oh that's a little. Yeah.
- 35:23So that was the other controversy for the show was
- 35:25that they hired a sexual assault.
- 35:29And that kind of dude, that kind of frustrates me because I'm not
- 35:33going to I I have to be honest, like I was really, as much as I
- 35:36loved this show, I was very frustrated because I was
- 35:41applying a lot of stuff to myself in this in the way you
- 35:45know. You're a.
- 35:46What do you mean? OK, For example, just like you
- 35:49said, like a guy who's blacklisted.
- 35:51Got right, got hired. Yeah, it's just kind of a
- 35:56reminder of how it was back in the day.
- 35:57Like I could not stop thinking of like if I were, well,
- 36:01obviously, like I was just so frustrated even though there's
- 36:06nothing I could do about it. But I was frustrated how the the
- 36:09men, like, the men can just do whatever they want, can sleep
- 36:13with whatever they want, and they're clean and they're pure,
- 36:16but just one, just by one like touch, like from a barbarian and
- 36:24they're defiled or just even like even like an encounter, you
- 36:29know? And it's like, I don't, I don't
- 36:31like hearing when when when like you know people who are who have
- 36:37that in the background are are hired because it's like like how
- 36:43come you guys make a big deal out of the dumbest things if
- 36:47like if it's like a woman or if it's like something else that I
- 36:50don't, I don't want to get into it.
- 36:52Yeah, like other things. Like even like something
- 36:58bullying versus, like, sex assault.
- 37:02Right. You know, not obviously.
- 37:05They're both bad. But like, how come one is being
- 37:09swept under the rug and then someone just gets us like,
- 37:13knocked down, loses their career for something that, you know, I
- 37:18don't know. I don't want to get into it.
- 37:20But yeah, I was just thinking about it a lot during this show.
- 37:22Like the frustration, like, how come, like, why?
- 37:31Why is it that if it's a man doing it, it's OK?
- 37:35Or it's like, oh, it's not a big deal.
- 37:36It's not a big deal, but it's a woman.
- 37:37It's like, oh, no, you gotta, you gotta, you gotta excellent,
- 37:43you gotta, you know, that's just one part of it.
- 37:46There's other stuff, but yeah. Yeah.
- 37:49So I guess we should mention now trigger warning for anyone who's
- 37:53listening about No, it's we gotta talk about anyway.
- 37:57Trigger warning about sexual assault, suicide and just
- 38:07violence, I guess toward women and and children and elderly
- 38:12people. So do you want to talk about the
- 38:17acting? Because I think that is a big,
- 38:21big reason why this show sort of works.
- 38:23Right. So you have Nam Kumene, who's
- 38:25leading the charge. He's the male lead.
- 38:28I think he's the one who largely made the show what it is, Like.
- 38:33He took my breath away. He was so skillful in presenting
- 38:38this character and inhabiting Chang Hyun truly, and he has
- 38:43these extremely expressive eyes. He sure does.
- 38:48He's like a micro expression queen king and I think there was
- 38:52AI know, I think there was like just a genuineness to him that
- 38:57kept me riveted. He hit the comedic bits
- 38:59perfectly and he nailed all the emotional beats as well.
- 39:03How did you feel about this man? So somehow I fell in love.
- 39:09I'm just kidding. I always say that, but I feel
- 39:15like it was so well casted. I think throughout the entire
- 39:18drama I was watching, I was like this show is just like perfectly
- 39:21casted. This is well casted.
- 39:24He took, he took this role. He just like, I don't know if it
- 39:30would have worked with anyone else, who knows?
- 39:33But I feel like he just amazed me when there was moments where
- 39:37like there was a lot of scenes where he didn't say anything,
- 39:42right. He had no lines at all and like,
- 39:45he didn't have to say anything. And it's so funny because
- 39:48there's so many scenes where they ask him questions and he's
- 39:51just there. He doesn't say anything at all
- 39:53and they answer or they they ask another question and he's just
- 39:56like, I mean I can't get, I can't, you know give the facial
- 40:00expressions that he does, but. They'll ask him something and
- 40:04he's just like, he'll do his thing and then they'll ask him.
- 40:08They're like they're having a conversation with him and he's
- 40:10just there. Like he's just there.
- 40:13And you know what he's saying. And I'm like, Oh my gosh, I I
- 40:17haven't seen that in a really long time.
- 40:19It was very refreshing to see him, to see the his.
- 40:23The way he portrayed this role was so, so refreshing to me.
- 40:28I was like, this is like, this is a man.
- 40:30This is a man. This is a man.
- 40:33This is not like an actor trying to be a man.
- 40:36This is a man. Just being a man.
- 40:38And exactly what you say. Like, so genuine too.
- 40:41I thought it was very, very genuine.
- 40:44Yeah. And yeah.
- 40:47Yeah, loved him. So good, what did you think
- 40:50about our kill Che, played by An and Jen?
- 40:57So I liked her. Female lead.
- 41:01I liked her. You liked her?
- 41:04I have to say though, at the beginning, I had to warm up to
- 41:09her at the beginning, which is OK.
- 41:12It's. I mean, I mean, it's OK because
- 41:13like, it's like the first couple episodes, there's the actors are
- 41:17getting used to their characters, yadda yadda.
- 41:20Which is fine. But for me, I was like, OK, like
- 41:22she's cute. I like what she's doing.
- 41:27I I, yeah. But I liked her.
- 41:29I liked her. You liked her?
- 41:33Yeah, on that note, she said. Anand Jin said it was really
- 41:38difficult to approach period genre series to portray Yugi
- 41:42Che. I always question myself if
- 41:45there was, if this was the right way.
- 41:47I started with getting myself used to the dialect first, so I
- 41:52had to study the script more than I did with previous ones.
- 41:56Towards the beginning of the production I focused on getting
- 41:58used to the genre and now I've come to be more comfortable
- 42:01around the set and found more room to express what I want.
- 42:04It might not be perfect, but as you see from you's perspective,
- 42:07you will be able to follow her story.
- 42:09So I asked for much love. So she was basically like,
- 42:11forgive me, this is a a big tall order for me to speak in a
- 42:17different dialect. The saguks are notoriously
- 42:19difficult. It's a whole different style of
- 42:23speaking and inflections and different things, and I think
- 42:27she did very well considering that this is such a layered
- 42:32character and I want to touch on the fact that so many people
- 42:36were upset with this character. OK, can I?
- 42:40Because I say though like they match really well and.
- 42:44They kept up with. Each other.
- 42:46Really. Well, I just want to say that I
- 42:48did like her. I just wanted.
- 42:50OK, go ahead, go. Ahead, I agree.
- 42:52I agree that they complemented each other very well.
- 42:56And one thing about this couple is that this is a big age gap
- 43:00between them. Ten years Nam Nam Kun Min is 45
- 43:04years old in real life. Oh, wow. 45 I'm in Jen is 32 Oh.
- 43:09Snap. OK.
- 43:12So that's thirteen years between them, 13 year age gap, that's
- 43:17huge age gap in real life. And I do feel like that is the
- 43:21age gap in the characters as well.
- 43:24I think she starts to show as a teenager.
- 43:27She ends the show maybe in her 30s.
- 43:30I agree. There's a one point where he
- 43:32does say like, I'm way much older than you and it doesn't
- 43:35say. Yeah, he says.
- 43:36I'm basically waiting for you to grow up because you're so
- 43:38charming and cool and like bad ass right now, but you you have
- 43:43some growing to do like internally.
- 43:47Yep, yes, yes. You need a girl as a person
- 43:49before you're like ready. For me, that's when he basically
- 43:52told her at one point and she was like, what the hell do you
- 43:55mean? And as an audience, like we
- 43:58totally understand where he's coming from.
- 44:00But it is an age gap romance. He is way older than her, same
- 44:04same as Gone With the Wind as well.
- 44:06Like Brett Butler's supposed to be a man and I think she's a
- 44:11teenager when she starts the the Movie or Slash book and it is a
- 44:16span of 12 years in Gone with the Wind.
- 44:19I also feel like this is a large span of time.
- 44:22Especially when they talk about like, yeah, years ago and I'm
- 44:25like, I swear I just saw two years ago on the thing I'm like,
- 44:29oh, OK, we're doing all righty then, I think.
- 44:34I think it's the same, right? Like it's got to be at least a
- 44:36decade between the first episode and the last episode of the
- 44:41show. So something to keep in mind
- 44:43there. As far as people getting upset
- 44:46with the character, I didn't quite understand.
- 44:49I understand, but I also don't understand because she's so much
- 44:56like Scarlett O'Hara who is prideful and stubborn and vain
- 45:02and petulant. But she's soft hearted where it
- 45:05counts and tactical where it counts.
- 45:08And she's resilient and defiant and self assured and courageous.
- 45:12And I love that fierceness about both of them, The fact that
- 45:17she's flawed, she's human, she does make mistakes.
- 45:21And who's that going to make mistakes?
- 45:23We all Jack. Up when Look around what's
- 45:26what's happening around her? Yeah, for sure.
- 45:31Yeah, I really liked. I mean, I like both characters,
- 45:35but I liked when I first start towards the beginning, I liked
- 45:39seeing like how she was so honest and why people the
- 45:44character, why everyone's like oh she's so like out there.
- 45:47She's like so brazen or she's so whatever.
- 45:51Like she's you know I'm just like she's literally just being
- 45:55herself and she's honest and she's like do.
- 45:58Especially when like she's she's trying to follow her friend's
- 46:01lead and doing like cutie stuff and like say like they're like
- 46:06doing. So for example, like they're
- 46:08trying to do something and they have to be on their knees for a
- 46:10long time and she's just like, Oh my God man, he's hurt like
- 46:14she's not. I think they were praying.
- 46:17She's like, and then she's OK and I'm like that is so real.
- 46:21Like, yeah, in reality, like as much as ladylike as I would like
- 46:27to be a lot of times. It's hard.
- 46:32It's hard. She is like, I like the fact
- 46:34that she was Oprah. She was genuine about how, like,
- 46:40there's a lot of things like the fact that she the way when she
- 46:43would cry, when she when she found out so and so and so and
- 46:47so we're getting married and she was like, crying.
- 46:51Yeah, like just crying. She wasn't like.
- 46:53She was just like, wailing to her heart, like.
- 46:56Yeah, like a child. Like a child.
- 46:59And then if she's doing something that's supposed to be
- 47:03like kind or nice, but if it's uncomfortable for her, she says
- 47:06it's uncomfortable for her. So, like, this is uncomfortable
- 47:08or this hurts, but I really enjoyed that.
- 47:11She was like, that just made her real.
- 47:15Yeah, I think she was a fully realized character and she does
- 47:19have a a really great arc that we can talk about in the
- 47:22spoiler. Section She does.
- 47:24You know, just like her man's. Oh, by the end of the show,
- 47:26she's a different. Person.
- 47:27She. I have so much to say about her,
- 47:31but OK, yeah, yes. And then him too.
- 47:34But yeah. Yes.
- 47:35OK. So why don't we do this?
- 47:36Why don't we talk about our ratings for the show and then
- 47:41we'll just get into the spoiler section because girl, I think
- 47:43we've had enough of, like, dancing around the characters
- 47:47and what happens to them and all this stuff.
- 47:48OK, So what would you give this show out of Five Soldier
- 47:52bottles? OK this is so hard I would like
- 47:58to give the show if wait no that is that makes no sense.
- 48:07Can I do 4 social bottle Soulju bottles and a shot of Soulju?
- 48:14Yeah, like a 4.94 point. Five, yeah.
- 48:19I'm very like recency bias right now, especially I'm kind of on
- 48:23that high so. Talk about it.
- 48:26Yes, speak on it. So there's a thing called
- 48:28recency bias, which I I completely agree with.
- 48:31It's basically you're too close to the thing.
- 48:33You need to give it some time before you can the Rose colored
- 48:37glasses come off and the experience wears off and you can
- 48:39kind of see the flaws, see what it is for real in comparison to
- 48:42other things as well, things that are a little bit older and
- 48:46so I also think that it is a 4, 1/2, maybe even 5.
- 48:50Soldier bottles, But I was like, I don't want to be extra.
- 48:55I think it's a four and A5. Let's do 4 1/2 for me, 4 1/2
- 48:59Soldier bottles and then you got four in a in a shot because it
- 49:04is excellent. I'm not gonna deny it's
- 49:06excellent. I think there are The plot gets
- 49:11a little wobbly towards the end of the show.
- 49:13I think Part 2 wasn't as strong as part one, but overall it is a
- 49:17feat. It is to do this type of show so
- 49:20well and to get people on board and really sort of sell the
- 49:26thing, you know what I'm saying? There's other shows that I've
- 49:29done it really well and still the endings are a little wobbly.
- 49:32But at the end of the day, you're like, that was a fucking
- 49:34great show. Like Mr. Sunshine, it's one of
- 49:37those shows. The red sleeve is another one of
- 49:40those shows where you're like, Oh my God, that's a masterpiece.
- 49:43But the ending we got, there's some things that I'm like, I can
- 49:48nitpick here and there about this or that, but overall it's a
- 49:53great experience, a great watch and I don't regret anything that
- 49:58happened. It made me feel things.
- 50:00Like I felt like everything. I felt the I I was swelled.
- 50:07I was swell. I was like I I felt everything.
- 50:10I was like feeling things. I'm not just like watching like,
- 50:15you know, watching. I'm just like, right, I'm being
- 50:19enveloped. You can't passively watch this
- 50:20show. You have to, you know, Eyes,
- 50:23ears, hearts open when you watch my dears.
- 50:26For sure, Even when I was like, all right, I'm so sorry, No,
- 50:30keep going. Like, I get on my phone like,
- 50:32naturally or by an extinct, and then I look up.
- 50:35I'm like, what happened? I'm actually usually I don't
- 50:38rewind, but at this show I was rewinding.
- 50:41I was like, no, hold on, let me put my phone away.
- 50:43I can't miss this. Yeah, I would do that too.
- 50:48I would like try and write a note down and then I'd be like,
- 50:51wait, I missed something And then I'd be like, Oh no, I can't
- 50:54do that. I I honestly didn't write any
- 50:57notes. During.
- 50:58My watch of the show. It was after the show had ended
- 51:01in like weeks later that I was like, OK, I need to sit down and
- 51:03like get this all out, but that's so rare for me.
- 51:06I usually write things down as the show is ending while I'm
- 51:10watching, but I did not this time.
- 51:12I needed my full attention. Feel that it was hard, OK?
- 51:17All right, so we're going to get into the spoiler section, so if
- 51:21you don't care to be spoiled, keep listening.
- 51:22If you want to go off and watch my dears all 21 episodes, I
- 51:25highly recommend you do that before coming back and listening
- 51:29to the spoiler section. We'll see you on the other side.
- 51:38You want to come in? All right.
- 51:40We're on the other side of spoilers.
- 51:41That's all right. Where do you want to start?
- 51:44I think let's go back to the slavery thing that you like
- 51:46skipped over. So talk to me about slavery and
- 51:49my tears. Just such AI know it's OK.
- 51:55I think there was a phrase like, I'm just gonna, like, copy you
- 52:00today, 'cause you're just saying, like, the right, correct
- 52:02terms and phrases. You said something about it was
- 52:05a they had a reflection of themselves or they had a mirror
- 52:09to themselves, right? Yeah, I feel like.
- 52:11There's a big, big mirror to society.
- 52:13To society, I feel like that was like it was interesting to see
- 52:19in that culture, because I was like no one.
- 52:21There's no there's discrimination without
- 52:24discrimination. You know, like no one is.
- 52:29You're like there's nothing. Guys are the same.
- 52:31I don't get it. No, there's discrimination
- 52:34without discrimination if that makes no sense.
- 52:37But like that no one is safe, you know?
- 52:40And it's crazy. How?
- 52:42How, like you said, like they were enslaved.
- 52:45And then within themselves they have that slavery.
- 52:49And I was like, and to me, I'm just like, Oh my gosh, it's just
- 52:54you. You see, that's just a part of
- 52:56everything else of how how blind, how blind, how blind, you
- 53:05know, they were or they can be. I'm just going to stick to the
- 53:09show how how blind they they were to see like literally what
- 53:14they're doing, what they're doing to you.
- 53:17You guys are doing, you've been doing or you guys are doing to
- 53:19them? I think there's a difference
- 53:24between the slavery in Korea and the slavery in the Ching when
- 53:28they get captured and taken away.
- 53:31And I'm not sure if this is accurate.
- 53:35You know what I'm saying? Like, I think that the it's the
- 53:40same problem as Gone With the Wind where it's like this
- 53:42idyllic society where the slaves are not.
- 53:46They're treated well and like nothing's wrong here.
- 53:49And they're happy to be working the fields and, you know,
- 53:53dealing with the house and having, you know, having a
- 53:57master and stuff like that. And that's not.
- 53:59Being friends with your. I mean, that's problematic.
- 54:02Friends are like, yeah, I mean, it's not like it's not possible,
- 54:08but exactly what you were saying.
- 54:10So the fact that, you know, shit basically goes down in the chain
- 54:16and not necessarily in Korean society, I don't know, like the
- 54:21only time where I'm like, oh, this is a real negative
- 54:23portrayal of slavery in Korea is that back story that we get with
- 54:28Chung Hyun and his father and him killing the kid that was in
- 54:33love with his daughter and stuff like that.
- 54:35Like that story is like, oh, and we got that super late in the
- 54:40show. We got, yeah.
- 54:44In that scene I was like. I mean that we could talk about
- 54:46a little bit, OK, I don't know if we should talk about it now
- 54:49or later, but like, that's a nitpick.
- 54:50But I do too. I do too.
- 54:53Regardless, I think there's. I'm not sure what we can say in
- 54:57conclusion about my dearest and slavery other than it seems
- 55:02incomplete and not necessarily portrayed to the in the best way
- 55:10because they were so they were so accurate with other things,
- 55:16right? Like what happened and the whole
- 55:18invasion and the way that the Ching look.
- 55:21They did their homework like this isn't like a party city
- 55:25looking group of people that came to invade Korea like they
- 55:31look real, right? This looks like a real quasi
- 55:35Mongolian force that calms down. And then the way that their
- 55:40whole society looks when we're in Shimyang, it's a well formed
- 55:49like portrayal of them. And of course the slavery over
- 55:53there is like brutal and and and terrible and then they don't
- 55:58necessarily do the same hard look.
- 56:03Yeah, but they don't do the same hard look for the Tolson like
- 56:08slavery, so. It was in their face, but they
- 56:10were like. Right.
- 56:12What? Happened.
- 56:14No, we're cool here. I don't know.
- 56:16We're cool here. So let's talk about the Let's
- 56:22talk about the character Jong Hyun and just his, the way he
- 56:27starts to show and the way that he ends the show.
- 56:30Because I feel like he is so, so cool and so central to
- 56:34everything. Because at the at the beginning
- 56:36of the show, he has, like this inability to commit to a
- 56:40relationship and the story of him hanging out like sans
- 56:44chaperone with a young maiden and then him not proposing
- 56:47marriage that's taken straight from Gone with the Wind.
- 56:50He's a scoundrel, a man who's not bound by restrictive social
- 56:55norms or patriotism. He's pragmatic, not dogmatic.
- 57:00He's at odds with the conservative Korean society.
- 57:03And by the end of the show, he's undoubtedly one of the most
- 57:08heroic characters in K drama, and he finds something worth
- 57:12fighting for. And it's her.
- 57:15It's his deep love for Kilje and the compulsion to keep her
- 57:19alive. And it's also this big sense of
- 57:23justice and compassion for the Korean slaves that were taken as
- 57:27captives to Ching. He's doing like these explosive
- 57:31defenses of his people and the woman he loves.
- 57:35He'll do anything for what's right versus doing anything for
- 57:39himself. And that's how he was at the
- 57:42beginning of the show. But all of this with like this
- 57:46calculated calm and that is fun to see.
- 57:53And I don't know if you had anything else to say about Tang
- 57:58Hyung, because I thought he was such a great part of the show.
- 58:03He definitely was my favorite character for sure.
- 58:08I'm just gonna say he was definitely my favorite
- 58:11character. I obviously was rooting for him
- 58:14and I just the fact that everything you mentioned, I I
- 58:19fell in love with him for that. I'm like can that be like a real
- 58:22man like that Like he he's just, he comes out of nowhere and
- 58:27everyone's talking about him like oh who's this guy?
- 58:29Or like oh he's definitely a fake this or like he's such a
- 58:33coward or he's this or like he mocks like, you know our ideas,
- 58:37our ideals. He mocks like, you know the
- 58:41monarchy. He marks like he he's he he's
- 58:44like, oh, he has this like whole unmarried concept that he wants
- 58:48to do and he wants to do whatever he wants and stuff like
- 58:50that. And I don't know why I feel like
- 58:54that was so freeing. Like I I saw him.
- 58:57I'm like, he's just like so free and he doesn't care.
- 59:00And because of that, it was so easy for him to fight for what
- 59:03he wanted to fight for. From my opinion, especially when
- 59:06he fell in love with her and I I was like, it all started because
- 59:13he was like, oh, I'm a bucket. When, you know the first time
- 59:15that they were going to in the little little Nunguri where they
- 59:19had, they were like forming this little militia to go and save
- 59:22the king. And he was.
- 59:24Like peace out this. No, I'm I'm I'm heading out to
- 59:29this this this sounds this is like dumb.
- 59:32I'm gonna leave in my terms. Obviously you said it better
- 59:35than I did. But he and then you know once he
- 59:39once he knew that it it involved her because you know because she
- 59:48was in love with another man. Is it?
- 59:51Is it crazy? That was a home and.
- 59:53Like he I was just like bro, like he's like, I'm going to
- 59:56make sure he's safe for her sake, you know?
- 1:00:01Yeah. Like, yeah.
- 1:00:02Who does that? What kind of man is that?
- 1:00:04You know, like, what kind of man?
- 1:00:05Obviously. Like he didn't do the the
- 1:00:08regular. Like, what?
- 1:00:10You want to see what you want from an actual man?
- 1:00:12Like, OK, like, I want marriage. I want this.
- 1:00:15I want that. He wasn't doing any of that, but
- 1:00:17he was doing like even grander things.
- 1:00:19He was doing even better things. He's like she's he saved her so
- 1:00:23many times. And from there it kind of
- 1:00:26trickled like this whole. Here's the thing, like, I I
- 1:00:29thought that it started with his love for her because he wanted
- 1:00:33to make sure she's safe, you know, and make sure she's OK And
- 1:00:36then from there he's he joined, you know, the he joined the war.
- 1:00:41He joined, You know, he started helping out with like all these
- 1:00:45different political, you know, scenarios and stuff like that
- 1:00:47because he's really smart, very very smart, very intelligent.
- 1:00:53He knows how to, like, play people.
- 1:00:54He knows how to play. Like he knows how to play the
- 1:00:57game between, like, politics and between Ching and between Josen.
- 1:01:01And he knows how to talk with people and he knows how to like
- 1:01:05he knows, you said calculating and exactly like he knew.
- 1:01:08He knew other people's next move.
- 1:01:10And before they make that next move, he would say like do this
- 1:01:13and that because this person's going to do this.
- 1:01:15He was very like that. But I'm like, that was so
- 1:01:18attractive to me because I'm like because here here's what I
- 1:01:24I wrote somewhere I said this male lead is proactive.
- 1:01:29I love, we love a proactive male lead.
- 1:01:33Like a proactive male lead. Like he's always proactive.
- 1:01:38He's always doing something, whether it's for her or if it's
- 1:01:42like from there, then like he started.
- 1:01:44Obviously, like you said it, it started with her.
- 1:01:47OK, well, he's always been what's?
- 1:01:50Weird is that the protection, the protection extended beyond
- 1:01:53her. Exactly from their.
- 1:01:55It was like, Oh yes, like people that she cared about, including
- 1:02:02his, his love rival, the man that she loves, who does that.
- 1:02:08That's true love right there. Not here, I don't say.
- 1:02:12I'm just kidding. Yeah, yes, very proactive.
- 1:02:15And I love when a male lead is proactive and and not just like
- 1:02:20he, he definitely was proactive and doing something in general
- 1:02:24actually helping out and making some kind of difference and
- 1:02:28using, you know whatever He has read over resources he has, but
- 1:02:32he was also proactive with her and I love that even though at
- 1:02:36first she was, he was like like I know that that also counts.
- 1:02:40He told you straight up like I I'm gonna.
- 1:02:44I'm living the unmarried life. But I like you, you know, like
- 1:02:47this, you know you don't like he was straight up from the
- 1:02:50beginning. This is what I this is what I
- 1:02:53want for right now. But I really like you.
- 1:02:55I want you in my life. She's like, Oh no.
- 1:02:57And then it keeps going like he's always proactive with her.
- 1:03:01Like he never he always is straight up with her and tells
- 1:03:04her like, well, except for except for except for some.
- 1:03:11You know when he saved, when she saved her like from like 17
- 1:03:15soldiers or 13 soldiers. But anyways, we're.
- 1:03:18Oh, yeah, right. That was, that was like a little
- 1:03:20a big life. So I I like I said Gilche goes
- 1:03:26through a big change throughout the show and she saw the most
- 1:03:30growth. Yes, to me, she her teenage
- 1:03:34immaturity, her nonchalance over the serious Ching invasion, the
- 1:03:39way she's too. She's so shallow and feisty and
- 1:03:43outspoken, and she comes into her adulthood with a compelling
- 1:03:48inner strength that taps it. She taps into it during the war
- 1:03:52years, the invasion years, and she later runs her own business.
- 1:03:56She takes responsibility for her helpless circle of dependence.
- 1:04:01Her family and the servants slash slaves.
- 1:04:04And to me, people were also seemingly upset with Kilche
- 1:04:10because she doesn't choose him time and time again.
- 1:04:14OK. And it seemed like I I honestly
- 1:04:19didn't hold it against her at all.
- 1:04:20That she kept was like, no, and like didn't understand her own
- 1:04:24feelings and all this stuff for so long.
- 1:04:26He was the right person at the wrong time. 100,000 percent
- 1:04:30100,000. Percent so.
- 1:04:33And even if he was a green flag and he loved her deeply, he he
- 1:04:38could see her fire. He could see her grit, her
- 1:04:42determination as a survivor before she ever could.
- 1:04:45And that to me means that they're not.
- 1:04:48They don't. How do I put this?
- 1:04:51They're he's a complete person. Even if he changes later and has
- 1:04:55a character arc, he's a complete person and he knows who he is.
- 1:04:58She is not. She's not there yet.
- 1:05:02Like her frontal lobe hasn't developed yet so exactly so.
- 1:05:07He always knew who she was, but she did not.
- 1:05:10And it's her brazenness that he admires deeply.
- 1:05:16I I honestly don't get why people were like, upset with
- 1:05:21her, because I was. Upset.
- 1:05:22That's crazy. I don't know.
- 1:05:24Like it was just I I can't name names of like this person was
- 1:05:28upset with Kill Chip. Like, I feel like a lot of
- 1:05:31people were just annoyed with her, with her antics and the
- 1:05:35fact that she was so in love with Ashley.
- 1:05:38I mean Yongjun. Ashley I was kidding, Yeah.
- 1:05:42Ashley is the equivalent character in Gone With the Way.
- 1:05:46Yeah, But yeah, I I think this love story is a slow burn.
- 1:05:50It's a lot of push and pull between them.
- 1:05:53Will they, Won't they? Yes.
- 1:05:55And that's what's appealing to me, like let that's what keeps
- 1:05:58you coming back, is that they keep having these run insurance
- 1:06:02in really stressful life or death situations.
- 1:06:06He saves her, He's continually looking after her and she's
- 1:06:10continually looking after her own people as well and getting
- 1:06:14them out of scrapes and delivering babies in the
- 1:06:16wilderness and the list goes on. So they're both on their own
- 1:06:23separate journeys, and it's like they intersect in certain
- 1:06:26moments throughout the show. And what's frustrating is that
- 1:06:30they always have this like crazy emotional goodbye where one of
- 1:06:34them wants something out of the other one and they don't get it
- 1:06:38exactly exactly. And.
- 1:06:42It's angsty and I'm an angsty bitch, so I love like.
- 1:06:46Give me the angst. Give me the angst.
- 1:06:48Yes, I I feel like I. One thing that I appreciated is
- 1:06:53there was so many. There's a lot of like a good
- 1:06:56chunk of the show where they were not together, but yet I
- 1:06:59still felt like the love, like I still felt the longing.
- 1:07:04And I'm like, especially coming from him.
- 1:07:07And like, even if they didn't, even if there was so many scenes
- 1:07:11without them together, I still felt like, oh, this is a love
- 1:07:15story. Like, I feel it across, like
- 1:07:19across from like I just, I yeah, he was portraying it really well
- 1:07:25on his own. Really, really well.
- 1:07:28Like really well. So yeah.
- 1:07:32Someone wanted us to talk about Kilche's character growth and
- 1:07:37him being the greenest flag ever.
- 1:07:39I think we have touched on that. Someone wanted us to talk about
- 1:07:44the metaphors of their love, like the sound of flowers on the
- 1:07:48moon thing. OK, so talking about their love
- 1:07:51story. There were, I mean, he fell in
- 1:07:55love with her at first sight #1 and he said, I think in episode
- 1:08:02I have it here, episode seven, he says.
- 1:08:05Did I tell you when you smile, I can hear the spring flowers
- 1:08:08bloom? Let me just, let's just end the
- 1:08:13episode right here. Because like, he can hear the
- 1:08:16fucking flowers bloom when she smiles.
- 1:08:20Are you fucking kidding me? This is romance.
- 1:08:24This is romance. OK, so this metaphor of him
- 1:08:31hearing the sound of flowers and at the end of the show, it comes
- 1:08:34back again when she's like, why don't you remind me what did you
- 1:08:36hear when you first saw me? And he says he remembers that he
- 1:08:42heard the sound of he heard flowers, which flowers make no
- 1:08:45noise. It's like amazing.
- 1:08:47An amazing, like, juxtaposition. It's so poetic for him to say
- 1:08:55literally he's like, do you hear that?
- 1:08:57And his buddy's like, Nah man, he's like, I hear the flowers.
- 1:09:01That was such a good scene. That was such a good scene,
- 1:09:04yeah. And the fact that he heard of.
- 1:09:05Such a great scene. I believe it was his servant
- 1:09:09first when he he was in love with his sister and he's like, I
- 1:09:14I he said the same thing, right? He said when she smiles like
- 1:09:17weird sound of flowers And so he's like, well, that's weird as
- 1:09:21a kid. That's what love is.
- 1:09:23That means to me is he learned what love is through that
- 1:09:26relationship between the slave in his household and his older
- 1:09:30sister, and that crashed and burned.
- 1:09:33But he kept that like sound of flowers.
- 1:09:36So then when it happened, it's like, oh, this is what he was
- 1:09:40talking about. This is it, He.
- 1:09:43Loved it. Which you can see how that is a
- 1:09:46very sad visual slash like metaphor for their relationship,
- 1:09:54I think. Because flowers don't last.
- 1:09:58Good point. That's a good point.
- 1:10:02Flowers wither and bloom all the time, and the sound of flowers
- 1:10:10like that's another level of like it doesn't exist.
- 1:10:14Like the sound of flowers doesn't exist.
- 1:10:17First of all, doesn't exist. They wither so, so.
- 1:10:22Fast. It is a stunning, beautiful
- 1:10:27line. If your man doesn't hear the
- 1:10:30flowers bloom when you smile, he's not the one.
- 1:10:34OK, break up. He is not the one.
- 1:10:39He has to hear for flowers. OK, Bloom.
- 1:10:42Yeah. Hear flowers bloom and then the
- 1:10:43moon thing. He has to hear the flowers move.
- 1:10:46So and then the moon thing, which was the other thing this
- 1:10:48person wanted us to talk about. Did you want to take over the
- 1:10:51moon thing? I have no notes on the moon.
- 1:10:55I love the moon. I literally have a wallpaper of
- 1:10:59the moon. Quit.
- 1:11:02I'm serious. I'm so serious.
- 1:11:05Like I have a a wallpaper of the moon.
- 1:11:08You do? Oh my God.
- 1:11:12Talk to me, Moon. Girl, I think it's just so it's
- 1:11:14kind of like the whole flowers thing, like you said.
- 1:11:16Like they they bloom, they wither, and then another one
- 1:11:20comes out. It's like there's always a new
- 1:11:22moon, you know? You always have.
- 1:11:25Which means no moon. And it's just, I love the fact
- 1:11:28that he's like every time there's this moon, this
- 1:11:30beautiful new moon. And he didn't say New Moon, but
- 1:11:34I'm always meeting you like this and I think that is so beautiful
- 1:11:38because. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:11:39They kept the meeting on like the full moon.
- 1:11:41Which is like. Which is once a month, right?
- 1:11:44Yes, literally once a month. I don't know.
- 1:11:47I just think it's such AI love. I love the idea of like, there's
- 1:11:53always something new coming, you know?
- 1:11:55There's always like a new thing coming, especially in your life
- 1:11:59when you know things go bad or whatever.
- 1:12:01There's always hope for something else, hope for
- 1:12:03something new. And the fact that there's always
- 1:12:05like a new moon, it dies out. It goes into Half Moon, it goes
- 1:12:09into like, you know, no moon. And then it goes back into it.
- 1:12:14No, Right. Just like just like flowers.
- 1:12:18They withered and then the other one blooms.
- 1:12:21So I just think it's. I just think it's so beautiful
- 1:12:25that he's like that he was watching the the moon.
- 1:12:30Oh, we were spoilers at the end, right?
- 1:12:34Where was he? Yeah.
- 1:12:35We're in sport, yeah, yeah, Someone said.
- 1:12:40Let's see. I'm thinking of characters.
- 1:12:42Oh, please cover the relationship between unne and
- 1:12:46kilche. It's so underrated.
- 1:12:50So what do you think about the female relationships in this
- 1:12:52show? I love them.
- 1:12:53I thought it was like, as much as I love the romance, I loved
- 1:12:59what they. I mean, obviously not not what
- 1:13:00they went through, but how they just went through it all
- 1:13:04together. And they always stuck together.
- 1:13:06And they were like as whether one one of them was about to die
- 1:13:11or one was, you know, about to give up or one was about to, you
- 1:13:13know, you know, end it. They always reach out for each
- 1:13:17other. They always were like, Nope,
- 1:13:19which is mostly Gilche who was like, let's do it.
- 1:13:21Let's do it. Like, no, we got it.
- 1:13:23We got this. And you know, I love there's
- 1:13:26this, you know, regarding them too.
- 1:13:29There's this scene disclaimer where a barbarian, they're this
- 1:13:35is literally right after left. They left Hungary, They're
- 1:13:37running away. They're.
- 1:13:39This is part. One, it's winter, it's cold,
- 1:13:43they separate for a little. No, Gilche goes in to look for
- 1:13:47more resources. And Anne is like, kind of like,
- 1:13:50where are you? So she goes after her and runs
- 1:13:53into a barbarian. And a barbarian pretty much not
- 1:13:58fully assaults her. But you know she encounters her
- 1:14:03about to and then here comes Gilche and you know kills him.
- 1:14:09She kills him. She's like And the fact that she
- 1:14:13and it was like remembering what that old lady told her like if
- 1:14:17you even encounter might as well just die.
- 1:14:20And so she's like, OK, might as well die.
- 1:14:22You know like who's going to want me like this.
- 1:14:24And so guilty is like, no, that never happened.
- 1:14:28I never killed a man. Yeah.
- 1:14:29You never that this never happened.
- 1:14:32OK. And I I think that's so powerful
- 1:14:35because trigger warning, like when it's, you know, when people
- 1:14:42that go through stuff like that and they go through healing and
- 1:14:46stuff like that, there's this moment where it's like, you know
- 1:14:49what? Where they go through the
- 1:14:51healing process. And like, I'm a new person, you
- 1:14:54know, I'm a new person. I'm not that defiled person
- 1:14:56anymore. You know, they believe that.
- 1:14:58And so I thought it was very powerful because she was like,
- 1:15:00no, you're still pure believe that you're pure girl.
- 1:15:06You still like you still got everything that you're Matt
- 1:15:09wants like don't even like this is my own personal take.
- 1:15:12But I thought it was just very powerful between the two.
- 1:15:14And ever since then, even though Anne already kind of, you know,
- 1:15:18loved her and and, you know, kind of look after her, even
- 1:15:22though Gilche was trying to get Herman.
- 1:15:25But you can see that there was still affection within each
- 1:15:28other. And ever since then, like, she's
- 1:15:30like, no, I got to make sure that she's OK to the point that
- 1:15:36she gets sick when when she gets, you know, taken away,
- 1:15:40which I'm like, well, damn, yeah, damn.
- 1:15:42Yeah. I think this is a very special
- 1:15:45relationship. It's one between wildly
- 1:15:48different personalities, like these two women could not be.
- 1:15:51More different. And I love that so much.
- 1:15:53Love it. I know, I I love that.
- 1:15:56And there is definite jealousy, like from Kilche toward Inne,
- 1:16:02because Inne has the man that she wants.
- 1:16:05And the fact that Kilche is so powerful in their journey to
- 1:16:15survive and escape and find refuge during the invasion and
- 1:16:21even afterward, like when they have no money and they're
- 1:16:25starving. Like guilt.
- 1:16:26Just the one that really leads the charge and creates that
- 1:16:29business and starts to feed them through her own creative means,
- 1:16:34through her own skills and business savvy.
- 1:16:39Unn. You feel like she is naive.
- 1:16:42She's a fool. You feel like she doesn't
- 1:16:45understand that guilt just going for her man, like loves her man.
- 1:16:50You feel like Unn is just sort of, like, useless because she
- 1:16:56faints when the baby's being born.
- 1:16:58She's not even a help there. She's like dead weight in the in
- 1:17:02the group, and even afterward, when they're trying to make ends
- 1:17:08meet after the invasion and there's peace, relative peace in
- 1:17:11the land. Anne is not the one who's, you
- 1:17:15know, getting her hands dirty the way that Gilche is.
- 1:17:19And despite all that, like they really come to a deep
- 1:17:24understanding and not deep sisterhood between all of those
- 1:17:27women, even the the slaves slash servants.
- 1:17:30They go with them on this journey and there is a a bond
- 1:17:36and a camaraderie that they have that the men never.
- 1:17:39You don't see that with. Them really achieve in the same
- 1:17:42way? Yeah, like their friends and
- 1:17:43their buddies and they care for each other and they would die
- 1:17:45for each other. But, like, have you ever stopped
- 1:17:48your friend from being raped? That's like, like, this is a new
- 1:17:52level of trust and compassion between each other and
- 1:18:00understanding on a deep level. And one day I feel like it's
- 1:18:04really special. Because she.
- 1:18:06It turns out that even though she subscribes to all of these
- 1:18:11ideals that they've trained into them like these patriarchal
- 1:18:14ideals and the Confucian ideals of you need to kill yourself.
- 1:18:19If you are even remotely defiled by a barbarian, that's your duty
- 1:18:25as a as a woman, as a wife or whatever.
- 1:18:29Don't come back because it's shameful.
- 1:18:32Like you should die. You should be willing to die for
- 1:18:35your purity. And even though she subscribes
- 1:18:38to that, she is very surprised when Yongjun is like, so upfront
- 1:18:45about it later in the show. And he's like spouting these
- 1:18:49ideals to her face and she it's very brave of her to say that's.
- 1:18:54Kind of shocked. Not going to lie, I almost got
- 1:18:56raped. Yeah, even though I didn't like
- 1:19:01he, like, touched me and like, should I kill myself?
- 1:19:06And she sort of challenges him, you know what I'm saying?
- 1:19:10Like it? It would have been so easy for
- 1:19:12her to just shut up. Right.
- 1:19:14And not say anything and not. Tell her story and she says no.
- 1:19:19Like Kilchek killed the guy and I'm here because of her.
- 1:19:25We all are shit. Like what?
- 1:19:30What are you going to do about it?
- 1:19:31You know what I'm saying? Like, it's a fair challenge that
- 1:19:33she poses to Yonjun and it like, breaks him and we can talk about
- 1:19:37him in a SEC. But I think that one is very
- 1:19:41compassionate and good-natured, and that's something she has in
- 1:19:44common with her equivalent character, Melanie in Gone With
- 1:19:48the Wind. And same as Melanie who in Gone
- 1:19:52With the Wind, she's the one who's pregnant and Scarlett
- 1:19:56delivers her baby under the rest.
- 1:19:58But besides that being like a switcheroo that they did in this
- 1:20:03story, I think that she's very motherly.
- 1:20:10Yes. And I I think that the way that
- 1:20:14Gilche is so aggressive and like domineering at times and so
- 1:20:19powerful, Una is very much like a feminine archetype and they
- 1:20:24complement each other really well in their friendship.
- 1:20:28And I love how Una is like a ride or die for Gilche.
- 1:20:32Gilche is a ride or die for everybody around her, but Inne
- 1:20:36is also a writer. Die for Kilchi, and she's always
- 1:20:39advocating for her when she gets kidnapped to the Ching Dynasty.
- 1:20:44Like she is the one that's like, you need to do something.
- 1:20:47We need to get her back. I'm going to go get her myself.
- 1:20:49Oh, she's so. Cute.
- 1:20:52And that was a big I know she's so cute and that was a big
- 1:20:55moment for her to be like she would do the same for me.
- 1:20:58Yes. Yes.
- 1:21:00How can I not try and get her back?
- 1:21:03Love. That she had a certainty like
- 1:21:06she would. Yeah, yes, she had a certainty.
- 1:21:11I like that word. Yeah, yeah, I honestly, I love
- 1:21:16that. I honestly feel like although
- 1:21:18she was naive, I feel like and this could just be me, that when
- 1:21:23you know, when they were younger, when they were still
- 1:21:25teens, I feel like she knew that, you know, guilty was after
- 1:21:32Yunjun. I feel like she knew, but she
- 1:21:36just was like, I don't know, she was like, you know, like, yeah,
- 1:21:39she is. But like, I know who she really
- 1:21:41loves. So she just needs to like, you
- 1:21:44know, figure that out. So it's OK.
- 1:21:47I feel like there's, I think there was a scene where she's
- 1:21:50like where she told when he told Male Lead, she told him like, I
- 1:21:57know she's kind of after Yunjun or am I making that up?
- 1:22:02No, no, no, she did say like I She doesn't realize it now, but
- 1:22:05she loves you. She.
- 1:22:05Doesn't realize it now, but she does love you because she's
- 1:22:08she's. She looked at you during the
- 1:22:11announcement that they were going to war, that there was an
- 1:22:14invasion, and she looked at you and everyone was looking at the
- 1:22:17person they most cared about. And she was, like, concerned and
- 1:22:20looked at you. So I know that deep down she
- 1:22:24loves you. She you're the person she's
- 1:22:26worried about, even if she doesn't realize it.
- 1:22:29So she one is very astute. Yeah.
- 1:22:34Because since day one, she was like, Oh yeah, Gilche loves
- 1:22:37Tony. No, out of my mind, yeah, yeah.
- 1:22:44Someone said it was interesting seeing what the female
- 1:22:47characters went through, and it made me think about purity
- 1:22:50culture as a whole. So I guess we need to talk a
- 1:22:56little bit about just that and how they I almost want to just
- 1:23:04bring up Yong Joon and his bullshit because he that's
- 1:23:09Ashley like that character. Because he done lost his fucking
- 1:23:14mind in the last few episodes. He lost his fucking mind in the
- 1:23:18last few episodes. No, for real.
- 1:23:21I'm like because like, bra, bra. What do you mean?
- 1:23:29What do you mean? You're preaching, You're
- 1:23:31preaching to the women about how they need to commit suicide, and
- 1:23:35you don't even want to go on an envoy to the Ching because you
- 1:23:40know it's a suicide mission, and it's.
- 1:23:42Like this is that's. Exactly what you're a coward you
- 1:23:45know about. Exactly what you just said, yes.
- 1:23:47OK, he's a coward. Since the beginning and and and
- 1:23:53Hyun Jiang Hyun, he calls him out for it and I love that scene
- 1:23:56so much when he's like you're. Yes, I love that scene as well
- 1:24:00because. He's like, you're a coward
- 1:24:02because you do like her, but you feel like you can't handle her,
- 1:24:05so you just leave on and so and you're a coward.
- 1:24:10And I'm like, I love that scene, but yeah, he's a coward.
- 1:24:14Yeah, that was a really frustrating aspect of the show
- 1:24:17Was not only that the guys were just kind of at odds with each
- 1:24:21other and Yongjun was a a little bitch like for the whole of the
- 1:24:26show, but like the purity, the fact that the women are so
- 1:24:30strong throughout everything. And it was very heart wrenching
- 1:24:37to see so many like women. Not not just our main like 4
- 1:24:43ladies, but like there were other women who were choosing to
- 1:24:47commit suicide throughout the show just to get away from the
- 1:24:53shame of being raped by a barbarian or being sexually
- 1:24:57assaulted or put in sexual slavery.
- 1:25:00Because that reality is very real and I don't.
- 1:25:04I don't, I will never presume to know what the right answer is.
- 1:25:08Like if I'm in that situation, would I jump off a Cliff or
- 1:25:11would I choose to live? I think the show is trying to
- 1:25:15say that you should strive to live, that it's not a shame to
- 1:25:21experience that, and that it's it's not the end of the world.
- 1:25:26You can heal through this even if society is dead fucking set
- 1:25:32against you. So yeah.
- 1:25:39That is the message that I think the show is trying to.
- 1:25:41To say I agree, I I I definitely.
- 1:25:44Because even even when Crown Prince who took him there, was
- 1:25:51it was it he, John Young? Was it him who took him to the
- 1:25:55marketplace in Shimyang? Who?
- 1:25:58I can't remember. Someone took him there.
- 1:26:00I can't remember who took him there, but he went because he
- 1:26:02needed. Did he need farmers at?
- 1:26:04Is it farm? No.
- 1:26:06What did he need? Like?
- 1:26:07I don't remember. I'm sorry.
- 1:26:09Everything's jumbling, but he need.
- 1:26:11It's OK. It's a long show.
- 1:26:12But he, they took him to the marketplace where he saw the the
- 1:26:18captives there and how they're being treated and how.
- 1:26:21And there's this scene where they're auctioning off some of
- 1:26:25the captives and one of them is a female and she's like she's a
- 1:26:30virgin and everybody in the car is like show, I wanna see more,
- 1:26:34I wanna see more. And so they don't show it on
- 1:26:37screen, but it's implied that they show her private parts of
- 1:26:43her body and he literally just he books it to like a corner and
- 1:26:49started like throwing up and he says like why would she bring
- 1:26:55shame on her country like that? Yeah, he starts trying her.
- 1:27:00Bro, I just get so triggered when that happens.
- 1:27:03I'm like. It's so triggering it, really.
- 1:27:06Is not. But yeah, like, yeah, that scene
- 1:27:09was like, bro, no, like. Wrong approach, wrong thing to
- 1:27:13say. Absolutely wrong approach.
- 1:27:15Like you saw everything that's going on with your people and
- 1:27:19that's what you're gonna say. You're gonna say and.
- 1:27:22As if she had a choice. As if exactly as if she had a
- 1:27:26choice. As if they have a choice.
- 1:27:28The other choice that he's talking about is death.
- 1:27:31He's just like, oh why is she choosing to go for this?
- 1:27:35Because the other option is she could just be dead.
- 1:27:38Dead. I'm like, OK, you know, And I
- 1:27:44think it was what's that one girl's name, which I'm just
- 1:27:47gonna say right now, I don't really like her.
- 1:27:49She's the Princess of. The Crown Princess.
- 1:27:53That's the crown. Princess, not his wife.
- 1:27:56All girl the Ching Princess. Girl, that home.
- 1:28:00Girl, OK. That bitch girl, OK?
- 1:28:03Girl. Yeah.
- 1:28:03So I didn't like her. I didn't like her.
- 1:28:08I'm just going to say that right now.
- 1:28:09I'm sorry. I'm sorry.
- 1:28:10I don't like her. When she was like what?
- 1:28:14You know, looking at, she's like how like the fact that you
- 1:28:17people, you chosen people, you know, went through all the
- 1:28:20humiliation, that you look so pathetic, still still trying to
- 1:28:24strive to live after being enslaved after going through all
- 1:28:28this. And then then I'm just like girl
- 1:28:30like you sound so dumb right now.
- 1:28:34I know you. I know you sound dumb.
- 1:28:36You're. Saying.
- 1:28:37Sit down, girl. Sit, sit down, sit down.
- 1:28:40And you're saying this to the guy that you Segun sorry,
- 1:28:44supposedly. Like So it's like she's like not
- 1:28:48impressed. You don't know who you're
- 1:28:49talking. To right now, OK, this is a
- 1:28:51whole of it. Like, that is character and her
- 1:28:53mentality is like a whole other side.
- 1:28:55I know. They're conversation, but.
- 1:28:57Yeah. OK.
- 1:28:58Great. Great.
- 1:28:58Yes, girl, that's that's not OK. But on that note, on that note,
- 1:29:07like on this topic, someone said that they wanted us to talk
- 1:29:11about the line he gives her in episode 17.
- 1:29:14I love Gilche and lists all of the qualities of her.
- 1:29:18So I have the line here. Two people actually wanted us to
- 1:29:22talk about this, that line when he listed all the parts that he
- 1:29:24liked about her. So this is episode 17, he says.
- 1:29:30Do you not you? Do you still not understand how
- 1:29:31I feel? For me, you are enough.
- 1:29:35Poor Gilche. Wealthy Gilche.
- 1:29:37Cheeky Gilche. Gentle Gilche.
- 1:29:40Gilche, who does not love me? Kilche who does.
- 1:29:43All I need is Kilche. All I need is you.
- 1:29:47And she at this point had already sort of implied that
- 1:29:52something happened to her while she was a captive.
- 1:29:56And she says, like, this is huge for her to after the divorce,
- 1:30:00after everything, after he's finally here back with her, like
- 1:30:07this is the love of her life. And she's about to tell her how,
- 1:30:10tell him something that she got divorced over.
- 1:30:16So she says very bravely, what about Kilche, who was defiled?
- 1:30:23And I don't think I was breathing at this point.
- 1:30:27Like I was holding my breath, like I knew he wasn't going to
- 1:30:30say something shit, but I was still like, Oh yeah, what is he
- 1:30:33going to say? He says the perfect thing.
- 1:30:38He says I'd embrace her and hugs her and says you must have
- 1:30:44suffered so much. But even if you push me away,
- 1:30:48I'll be by your side from now on tonight can I hold you?
- 1:30:53And they finally kiss and she kisses him back and and I'm
- 1:30:57like, I needed to pause the show at that point I was.
- 1:31:01Like. I.
- 1:31:02Need a minute? Yeah, he.
- 1:31:07Could not have had a more perfect reaction.
- 1:31:13Yeah. To her confessing that she had
- 1:31:16gone through a whole era of sexual assault in her life,
- 1:31:20yeah. And I think what hit me the
- 1:31:23most, not the most, but really just was like, he didn't make it
- 1:31:27about himself at all. I just like he didn't make it
- 1:31:31about himself. Like I feel like.
- 1:31:33Which is? He didn't say, like, well, I
- 1:31:36feel like shut up. No, Like, you know, or like a
- 1:31:38man. Like, what is this need for me?
- 1:31:40Like, it's not about you right now.
- 1:31:42It's not about you right now. You know he didn't.
- 1:31:45Bring it back. To himself.
- 1:31:46He didn't make it about himself or how he feels or anything.
- 1:31:49He focused on how you must have, you must have suffered, you
- 1:31:53know. I love that, Love that.
- 1:31:56I love the complex emotions playing on his face that he's he
- 1:32:01already knew what she was going to say, OK?
- 1:32:04I have no doubt that he already suspected that this happened.
- 1:32:09He's smart and she had already like started broached the
- 1:32:13conversation with this in mind and he read the tea leaves on it
- 1:32:18OK way long ago and he still was there.
- 1:32:22Like when she finally confessed he was heartbroken.
- 1:32:26Yeah. And went to comfort her like
- 1:32:30this is huge I. Know.
- 1:32:33The juxtaposed that to Young. Tune So Girl.
- 1:32:43I could not. I was like, ain't the one.
- 1:32:48If I had cabbage, if I had Rotten Tomatoes, I would have
- 1:32:50thrown it at the screen when good name was talking to Yunjun
- 1:32:54about almost getting raped. The quasi rape.
- 1:32:57Which is still fucking traumatic.
- 1:33:00Traumatic as fuck, OK? And he's like, shocked.
- 1:33:06What? How?
- 1:33:07How does this mean for me? This is like crippling my world.
- 1:33:11What I say? How could you?
- 1:33:13How could you lie to me like he was saying every fucking wrong
- 1:33:16thing. Yeah.
- 1:33:17Me. How can you?
- 1:33:17Yeah. Made it by himself.
- 1:33:22Made it about him. Anyway, so this, that was a big
- 1:33:28part of like the way that they got together, Kilche and
- 1:33:34Changyun, that was a big turning point for them and their
- 1:33:37relationship. And after that they have sex
- 1:33:40too. Like, we we go into the bedroom
- 1:33:42with them and I'm like, Oh my God, this is amazing.
- 1:33:47It wasn't gratuitous though. They didn't show anything.
- 1:33:49Like just in case you're listening to this and you
- 1:33:51haven't watched the show. Like it wasn't like suddenly NC
- 1:33:5517 in here. Beautiful scene.
- 1:33:57It was a beautiful. Scene.
- 1:33:58It was beautiful. It was very intimate and it was
- 1:34:01on her terms because earlier in the show he had saved her, he
- 1:34:09had rescued her out of slavery and then she was kind of living
- 1:34:13with him because he was still injured from that like arrow in
- 1:34:17the back. That's a whole nother fucking
- 1:34:20thing. But he's so fine and he was like
- 1:34:23pretending to be injured for a while so that she would stay and
- 1:34:27take care of him and so cute cure his little Boo boos and
- 1:34:31stuff and he comes on to her real strong.
- 1:34:37Like do you remember he was like changing his, like dressing on
- 1:34:40the on his and they showed his body and I was like, OK, Nam
- 1:34:44Kunman is like walking. Ripped Loki I'm not going to
- 1:34:48lie, he is jacked. I feel ashamed, but I was very
- 1:34:51shocked that he was like that. Jacked that was not expecting
- 1:34:57like disrespectfully, disrespectfully, like hot.
- 1:35:05Damn. So he's there, you Sir.
- 1:35:08But yeah. I underestimate the truth.
- 1:35:15That ass. No.
- 1:35:16OK, so sorry, sorry. Oh God.
- 1:35:23I need to. I need to calm down.
- 1:35:25So you're fanning yourself. So there's that scene where he
- 1:35:29is half naked. He puts on like a his hat, his
- 1:35:33shirt or something and then walks over to her and he kisses
- 1:35:37her on her forehead and like cradles her face.
- 1:35:40And I'm like, this is so amazing and intimate, but she's not
- 1:35:43really reciprocating at that point.
- 1:35:45It I didn't tell that. She's very hurt and nervous and
- 1:35:49she's technically still married at this point, so she is has a
- 1:35:52lot of stuff going on. But the second time around when
- 1:35:56he says that he loves all parts of her, right, he is completely
- 1:36:02in love with her. He loves her good side and he
- 1:36:04loves her bad side. He loves everything.
- 1:36:08Like everything that she's been through, it's OK.
- 1:36:12And at that, it's at that point where she trusts him enough with
- 1:36:15her story, with her experience, with her pain that she lets him
- 1:36:21in and they finally have sex and everyone's happy for them.
- 1:36:24But it was a process to get there because back in Chang back
- 1:36:29when she was taking care of him and she was technically free and
- 1:36:32could I think she could have had sex with him whatever back then
- 1:36:35because even if she was still married her husband abandoned
- 1:36:39her. If I was her I would have been
- 1:36:43like let's go but beside the point where he at where he room
- 1:36:49at time to come down. Is it is it this to right I will
- 1:36:56go wherever. OK.
- 1:37:01I have someone said. Someone said every time he
- 1:37:04confessed to her no matter what happened to her that was that.
- 1:37:07I think that same scene and everyone was fucking reeling
- 1:37:10over episode 17 and that perfect confession from him which he had
- 1:37:15confessed to her little by little throughout the show.
- 1:37:18But it like this is the one that really shook people up.
- 1:37:22I think talking about her sexual assault experiences, someone
- 1:37:28said how let's we had to talk about how they didn't show
- 1:37:31unnecessary rapes but suggested it.
- 1:37:35And I also think this is really important because there's some
- 1:37:39films and shows that are super out of pocket with rape scenes
- 1:37:47and the show did not at all like, besides the fact that it's
- 1:37:51airing on NBC, not Netflix or Amazon Prime or whatever.
- 1:37:55The fuck They did not. They chose a very tasteful way
- 1:38:00of presenting really horrific violence toward women.
- 1:38:07And I appreciate that. Yeah.
- 1:38:09I didn't think they need to go that far.
- 1:38:13Yeah. And they they just suggested and
- 1:38:16and the fact that she says it without us having seen it, like
- 1:38:20we can all up assume that this happened to her.
- 1:38:25But you know, her voicing it is more impactful than us seeing
- 1:38:30it. Yeah, because it must be so hard
- 1:38:33to say it out loud and then. Oh my God.
- 1:38:36Said say it out loud too. You know the man she's in love
- 1:38:39with? Too Woo she.
- 1:38:42I think it's even more evident when he reaches for her.
- 1:38:48By the way, can I just say I love that scene, I love that
- 1:38:53scene when he when he finds out that she's there and she's being
- 1:38:57auctioned off. Oh, fuck off.
- 1:39:01Fuck off. I love that scene.
- 1:39:03It had me. Balling it had me like I was
- 1:39:06like, like I I was speechless. I was breathless, like my heart
- 1:39:12was like not in like I. Fuck out of here like that scene
- 1:39:18was written and acted. He did so good and I was kind of
- 1:39:24nervous on how that scene was going to play out because it was
- 1:39:27like like that's so difficult. It could go either way.
- 1:39:31It could be like kind of like unclimited or like anti
- 1:39:35climactic. Yeah, yeah, it could be anti
- 1:39:37climactic, but it. Wasn't be like, oh, you extra.
- 1:39:41He was like, he was like, he's perfect, perfect.
- 1:39:47I know from the I know when he spots her through the crowd and
- 1:39:52she's like like she's you could see that she's just praying that
- 1:39:57he doesn't see her because she's so prideful and so ashamed of
- 1:40:03her situation. And I would be too.
- 1:40:06Like if I if the love of my life, if I saw the love of my
- 1:40:09life in that situation, I would be like, you know, one of two
- 1:40:14minds, one of be like, get me the fuck out of here or #2, I'd
- 1:40:16be like, please, I don't want you to see me like this.
- 1:40:20Exactly. And that's how she.
- 1:40:23Felt it, was she. And he just like cuts through
- 1:40:26the crowd. He's mowing down people
- 1:40:30aggressively, trying to get to her.
- 1:40:32And then he comes up just devastated and screaming.
- 1:40:37Why? Yeah, so good.
- 1:40:41And I'm like a pause. I need to calm down.
- 1:40:45I had to pause and I was like, crying.
- 1:40:47I'm like, I'm like that. Is that was how the episode
- 1:40:51ended? Yes, that is right.
- 1:40:53That was like, what was that like 13 or 4 episode 14 or
- 1:40:57something? I think so.
- 1:40:59One of those. Around there I.
- 1:41:01That was my heart was bounding and I was crying and yeah, he
- 1:41:07did amazing. She did really well.
- 1:41:09She did so good too. It them together in that scene
- 1:41:12was just like oh holy holy smokes but when he reaches for
- 1:41:17her her shoulder she like does this.
- 1:41:21And she. Oh, I was and I was like that is
- 1:41:24the evidence right there. And I think he he also like he
- 1:41:29though he was he put two and two together that moment as well And
- 1:41:32I'm like. Yes.
- 1:41:34Thank, yeah. I don't.
- 1:41:40I don't know. I don't even know what.
- 1:41:41That's, that's that has to be one of my favorite scenes, one
- 1:41:45of my favorite scenes for sure. It is pitch perfect the way they
- 1:41:48did that scene. But OK, let me see.
- 1:41:51Someone said they wanted us to talk, to talk about Mr. Goo,
- 1:41:56Ryangam, Yongjun and how these men have been trash all along.
- 1:42:02And I was like cool. Say like, yeah, no.
- 1:42:06Trash. Mr. Goo is her husband.
- 1:42:09Because there's like a lot of Mr. Goo's and I figured it was
- 1:42:11the husband. Mr. Goo is the husband.
- 1:42:15Then you have Ashley, Yongjun and Ryangam which is one of the
- 1:42:19besties, one of his the the gay best friend.
- 1:42:25Let's talk about Ryangam first, because he is the the represent
- 1:42:28the LGBTQ plus representation in this show and I thought that for
- 1:42:34the for the largest part of the show I was so annoyed.
- 1:42:39With him. Absolutely could not stand.
- 1:42:43Him. Yeah, same.
- 1:42:45Could he's so. I mean, he's so obviously loved.
- 1:42:50Zhang Hyun, respected and admired him, would die for him.
- 1:42:54But he was openly jealous of Kilche and multiple times
- 1:42:58sabotaged their relationship. Say that again please, Yes.
- 1:43:03He's a saboteur. OK, Yes, so I could.
- 1:43:09He was like the best the the gay best friend from hell to me and
- 1:43:16I couldn't. I could not get behind him and
- 1:43:20have sympathy for him until much, much later in Part 2 when
- 1:43:26they showed more of his back story and more of how he came
- 1:43:30into the fold and Chung Hyun's life.
- 1:43:32And how he was basically a child sex slave in the household of
- 1:43:39some nobleman there who was literally torturing him if he
- 1:43:44perceives some sort of sexual advance from somebody else that
- 1:43:49he accepted as a child. Literally a child.
- 1:43:55And he had this whole journey in Ark himself, and I felt that the
- 1:44:01show maybe didn't do his character.
- 1:44:03Justice at all. I agree, because I'm not going
- 1:44:08to lie, he wasn't really some scenes.
- 1:44:11He was. But a lot of the times he wasn't
- 1:44:13really doing it for me. And I think I don't know if it's
- 1:44:16the character or the actor, because I know.
- 1:44:21I know because he's not like, he's not like a bad actor or
- 1:44:24anything. It's just like he wasn't likable
- 1:44:28to me the way that he was portraying.
- 1:44:31Again, character writing or the way he was portraying it wasn't
- 1:44:35likable, you know, in my opinion, because a lot of time
- 1:44:40he was just like, OK, you know? And I'm like.
- 1:44:45I guess he wasn't giving. He just wasn't giving.
- 1:44:47Personally, again, it's just how I how I saw it and it.
- 1:44:55Don't want to sit and this is a safe space.
- 1:44:57That's how I don't worry. That's how I was like.
- 1:45:00It's not making it better that I'm not liking this character
- 1:45:03because it could be a likable character, but that way the way
- 1:45:07he's portraying the characters making it not likable for me
- 1:45:11until later on when he kind of. And maybe that's the point,
- 1:45:15because later on he kind of figures out OK, when you love
- 1:45:17Someone Like, You got to like it's not about you.
- 1:45:23Yes. He starts to kind of subscribe
- 1:45:25to Jang Hyung's level of love, where it's not necessarily about
- 1:45:31me being with them, it's about them being happy.
- 1:45:35Exactly. And that's when I was like, OK,
- 1:45:38we're OK, right. That's about when I was like,
- 1:45:41OK, I cannot. And then they were giving them
- 1:45:43me that back story of him and I was like, OK, I can kind of see
- 1:45:49him a little better. It's a little more in focus for
- 1:45:51me. But again, for large parts of
- 1:45:54the show, he was just like, so irritating.
- 1:45:57He and. Was he?
- 1:45:59Treated or talked to Gilche, I don't think that was fair.
- 1:46:02Oh, oh. Out of pocket.
- 1:46:04Just so unacceptable. Yeah.
- 1:46:06And that that's what made me more frustrated towards him
- 1:46:09because I'm like a brick. Like Brick?
- 1:46:14Yeah, I think. And I I love that line when I
- 1:46:18can't remember what it was, but I think that he Rangam went and
- 1:46:22told Jong Hyun that she was a curse.
- 1:46:25In which one she was enslaved in In by the chain And that she was
- 1:46:32there, in that town that he was in.
- 1:46:34Right. And he was like, why the fuck
- 1:46:38didn't you tell me sooner, basically.
- 1:46:41And he was like, well, I didn't want you to be with her.
- 1:46:44Basically the audacity. Like, I'm.
- 1:46:48I know at the audacity, but I'm paraphrasing and Dang Hyun
- 1:46:51responds with That's because you don't know what she means to me.
- 1:46:55I love. That.
- 1:46:57You don't know what she means to me.
- 1:47:00And that's when I think Jiang Jiang sort of change.
- 1:47:06It starts to change his mentality around being with
- 1:47:09Jiang Hyun and the fact that he's never going to going to
- 1:47:12love him the same way that Jiang loves him, right.
- 1:47:17Jiang is not looking for a same sex relationship like period.
- 1:47:22And he's like, oh, but I do understand, like how you feel.
- 1:47:28But he doesn't because he's not on the same level, right?
- 1:47:33It's obsession and it's possession.
- 1:47:35Territorial. Yes, exactly.
- 1:47:39So Ryangam, I think they did him dirty, like with the writing and
- 1:47:45even though he was extremely complex, I I just don't feel
- 1:47:49like they did him well, especially him being the plot
- 1:47:55device of the whole show. He ended up being he.
- 1:48:01So there's two people wanted us to talk about this.
- 1:48:04One person said they want us to talk about Youngam.
- 1:48:08Why is his hair white when no one else seemed to age?
- 1:48:12And then another person said I want to talk about, oh wait,
- 1:48:19where is it? Anyway, people wanted us to talk
- 1:48:21about Youngam. So here's.
- 1:48:23Because he was the the like, the framing device of the whole
- 1:48:28show. Evidently he was the mysterious
- 1:48:31prisoner, the storyteller, through which we're getting this
- 1:48:34rich story in a flashback form. What the hell happened?
- 1:48:42Like this is my theory that that wasn't the initial concept, no
- 1:48:49when they first shot that scene in episode one.
- 1:48:52Definitely so. I really was kind of dying
- 1:48:56laughing at that. But I'm like, hold on.
- 1:48:58Like, let me get. Let me get.
- 1:49:00Serious. I wonder.
- 1:49:00I truly. Because I'm like.
- 1:49:02I truly wonder if they, the writer, had written a happy
- 1:49:07ending initially. I don't think she did.
- 1:49:11I don't think so. I think that was meant to be
- 1:49:14Dang hyun. I thought.
- 1:49:16I thought that was maybe I'm like.
- 1:49:19It was a whole mystery, like people were trying to guess who
- 1:49:22it was In the sanitary, in the sanatorium I.
- 1:49:24Swear when they were like, Oh yeah, we're looking for Jong
- 1:49:27Hyun. I swear they said something like
- 1:49:30that. And so they're like, oh, there,
- 1:49:32that's Jong Hyun and then when? No.
- 1:49:37I know they mentioned Jong Hyun. It was pretty.
- 1:49:40They do. They're like, can you tell us
- 1:49:41about him? And he like, perks up.
- 1:49:43OK, maybe I. And then they say, oh, we know
- 1:49:45you're not crazy. OK, then I'm wrong, OK?
- 1:49:50And then he sort of initiates this whole flashback story, the
- 1:49:53entirety of the show. He is essentially the narrator,
- 1:49:57even though we don't hear him speak and like they make it seem
- 1:50:04like it's it was Rihanna the whole time.
- 1:50:08I don't think that. I honestly don't think that was
- 1:50:11in the first draft, I. Don't think so.
- 1:50:15It literally makes no sense. Like in the final episode,
- 1:50:19Ryangam is like, I'm going to pretend to be you and Jiang Kyun
- 1:50:23is like, no, you're not. Reverse Uno card steals his idea
- 1:50:28and like runs off to face off against all of these.
- 1:50:35What are they like Royal? They're sent from the palace
- 1:50:38like to try and catch him or whatever.
- 1:50:42And no, what the hell happens to Ryangam in that?
- 1:50:45How does scenario? Because he's just unconscious?
- 1:50:48How does he? Get imprisoned.
- 1:50:50He was no one thought to look for him like investigate where
- 1:50:53he was, break him out of the sanatorium.
- 1:50:56How did he get captured? We don't see that happens off
- 1:50:58screen. How did they connect him to Jang
- 1:51:00Hyun? Like does he have an ID card on
- 1:51:03him that says my name is Ryangam and I'm involved with Jang Hyun
- 1:51:07who's a a traitor of the state. Like what?
- 1:51:10How did they connect him to Jong Hyun?
- 1:51:13They just found this dude in the forest.
- 1:51:15From my memory, and again, it was a good minute since I
- 1:51:19watched the first episode. Like, it just made it seem like
- 1:51:25that he was waiting because didn't they say like, Oh yeah,
- 1:51:27he's going to come get me or he's waiting for him to get you
- 1:51:30or he's waiting for him to. Something, yeah.
- 1:51:33I'm waiting for him to either, he said.
- 1:51:35I'm waiting for him to come get me or he's been waiting for
- 1:51:37years for this to get him or someone to get him.
- 1:51:42It's something. Oh, this is a tragic story then.
- 1:51:45Because he's there. He's old.
- 1:51:46Apparently he's not that old. Apparently, he's not that old.
- 1:51:49That was like, OK. I'm like, oh, it's tragic.
- 1:51:53It's like he's old and like, you know, I don't know, they put
- 1:51:57this wig, they put this. Wig on beyond.
- 1:52:00I mean, it's like Gray and shit and he turns around in the final
- 1:52:04episode like bitch and it's literally the same actor playing
- 1:52:09Rangam Young playing him now with like a full on Gray ass
- 1:52:14wig. What the hell is that?
- 1:52:18Yeah, they refused to age. Him.
- 1:52:20I don't know. And and OK.
- 1:52:22How much time has passed? Exactly?
- 1:52:25Like what was the point of the investigation?
- 1:52:29And that an official going to investigate and talk to the
- 1:52:33young I'm in the sanatorium. Like I'm this whole red herring
- 1:52:37thing, like the framing device of the whole show.
- 1:52:40Shit, shit shit, 100,000. Percent at the Yeah, no for
- 1:52:45real. OK, so justice for Diango,
- 1:52:51because that was fucking weird. And then someone said, oh, we
- 1:52:55have to talk about Mr. Goo, her ex-husband, real fast.
- 1:52:58So piece of shit, motherfucker. So let's talk about him.
- 1:53:03Piece of shit, motherfucker. So I feel like Sam Jackson, this
- 1:53:09part of the show, OK, this man, he took credit for saving her in
- 1:53:14the woods against that like 17 on one fight later, he tried to
- 1:53:19fix it. He was like, no, no, no, it
- 1:53:20wasn't me. I just killed the last guy.
- 1:53:22And she was like, yeah, right, too little, too late.
- 1:53:26And he, he sort of liked her because she was audacious and
- 1:53:37had a great survival instinct and she would do anything to
- 1:53:40live. And he liked he liked her
- 1:53:44because of that. But to me it was like he wanted
- 1:53:48a bad bitch but didn't want a bad bitch at home.
- 1:53:51Yes. You know what I'm saying?
- 1:53:52And that was so like he wanted to tame a bad bitch.
- 1:53:54Exactly. And that's a trash person.
- 1:53:58My finger, she told him. She she told him like people
- 1:54:03like me and and the guys like me for how I am because the end
- 1:54:09they think that once I'm married I'll change think that they can
- 1:54:15take me once I once I once I get married.
- 1:54:17And he and she told him like no like you're you like the idea of
- 1:54:24me but I'm not going to change when I'm I'm going to be the
- 1:54:26same girl. I'm not going to change in my
- 1:54:29paraphrase. So, so yeah, that was very it
- 1:54:34was telegraphed that he wasn't going to take her back after she
- 1:54:40had been taken. He done.
- 1:54:42He done. He wasted so much time.
- 1:54:45He wasted so much time and he wasted so much time being all
- 1:54:50paranoid like. Oh yeah, I was.
- 1:54:53Like, no, not even believe. Like he believed that she was
- 1:54:56gone, but she was like, but he said, you know, oh, you know,
- 1:55:00she ran off again. Like you're not going to trust
- 1:55:03your wife. You're going to trust your wife?
- 1:55:07He's demanding loyalty from a woman who they're saying got
- 1:55:12napped. I'm like officer.
- 1:55:15He's like, she's she. She has a history of running
- 1:55:18away from your marriage, not from her livelihood and all of
- 1:55:23her family. And this little kid, this random
- 1:55:26little kid, they're going to hire this random little kid to
- 1:55:28be like, Oh yeah, like officer. He was, So what a freaking
- 1:55:35problem. So Mr. Goo, again, just a trash
- 1:55:40person. I could not stand him.
- 1:55:44Yeah. I couldn't stand him before and
- 1:55:46I couldn't stand him after he made these just terrible
- 1:55:51decisions. Moment that I had that.
- 1:55:53And then he not, he knocks up some.
- 1:55:55Girl, I was going to say that too.
- 1:55:56The fact that she oh. Girl like he goes, we're just
- 1:56:04like speech. So he goes, they pressure him
- 1:56:09into going to get her. Yeah.
- 1:56:11And he's like, oh shit, OK, so he takes some money, ransom
- 1:56:14money, and go on the way to Chang.
- 1:56:17He like, meets some dudes who were like, Oh yeah, I'm trying
- 1:56:21to ransom my son, I think back from Chang, 'cause he was taken
- 1:56:26unjustly. And they steal his ransom money,
- 1:56:31like the funds that he brought to get her out.
- 1:56:34And they're like, you don't he? Fucking kisses.
- 1:56:38Even after he catches them stealing, he catches him
- 1:56:41thieving and he's like, yeah, you can have my money so you can
- 1:56:44get your son out because. They're like my son is my and
- 1:56:48yeah. Yeah, and they told her while
- 1:56:51she was in that, like slavery camp.
- 1:56:55The marketplace, right? Oh yeah.
- 1:56:57No one ever comes to pick up the women.
- 1:56:59Yeah. No one's ever going to come.
- 1:57:02For well. What they said was no one comes
- 1:57:05for a wife, They'll come for a daughter, not a wife.
- 1:57:09Yeah, but they'll never come for a wife.
- 1:57:14Yeah. Which is like, fuck the
- 1:57:18patriarchy. Say that again, girl key.
- 1:57:21Chain on the ground, we were always.
- 1:57:24Skipping a turf. Sorry, me and my Taylor Swift
- 1:57:28obsession. So, Lord, I got.
- 1:57:32So I was like upended with this character because I was so mad
- 1:57:37at him and he made this the worst decision after worst
- 1:57:40decision. When she comes back, he's like,
- 1:57:43Oh yeah, I'll get rid of this bitch real quick if you tell me
- 1:57:47that you were not. Yeah, the oh, I'm like you.
- 1:57:52She's outside. Like, this is paper.
- 1:57:54Thin walls. She can hear you.
- 1:57:58The walls are made of paper. Yeah.
- 1:57:59So literally, literally, like, oh, that's just AI can fix that.
- 1:58:07What do you mean fix it? Lady outside that you just were
- 1:58:11saying bye to, like if she's your wife.
- 1:58:14What, you mean that's your baby? Like what?
- 1:58:19My gosh, how are? You going to be like JK my real
- 1:58:21wife's back? What a menace.
- 1:58:23Seriously, what a menace. I'll take you back if you're not
- 1:58:28what? I liked about their breakup was
- 1:58:30that not only were we just waiting for it and it finally
- 1:58:33happened, but she says I'm not divorced.
- 1:58:38She just takes ownership of it and takes some agency over it
- 1:58:42and says I'm not divorcing you because I was defiled in the in
- 1:58:48when I was taken. I'm divorcing you because I
- 1:58:51fell. I fell in love with John Hyun.
- 1:58:54That's right. That's right, girl.
- 1:58:56Because he was over there and he saved me and he was like, like
- 1:59:01he was like shocked. What do you?
- 1:59:06I'm speechless. I'm sorry he had me so
- 1:59:09speechless. And not in a.
- 1:59:10Good way. My God, he had me like gagged,
- 1:59:13bro. Like I was like, OK, so let's
- 1:59:15jump off him. And what was the last one that
- 1:59:18people wanted me to talk about? Oh, Yanjun.
- 1:59:24Well, we took him to task already, I think.
- 1:59:28OK, let's not. Let's not belabor the point.
- 1:59:30So Howard, that's done, someone said.
- 1:59:33Talk about the fact that Zhang Hyun was like a third lead in
- 1:59:36his own drama for part of the show.
- 1:59:39So this is a big nitpick of mine too.
- 1:59:43Was that Part 2 felt a little repetitive and irritating
- 1:59:50because the writer kept breaking up and separating our couple
- 1:59:54like for seemingly no reason, especially after she comes back
- 1:59:58from being kidnapped. From being enslaved, there's
- 2:00:02really no reason. Like the episodes, yes.
- 2:00:05Mm hmm. So, And they also took a lot of
- 2:00:10the narrative away from Kilche and focus more on Chang Hyun and
- 2:00:15his whereabouts and what he's up to.
- 2:00:18So that was still very interesting and compelling, but
- 2:00:21it made the story uneven because in the first part it was a lot
- 2:00:25of Kilche and a lot of Chang Hyun, and it was they were
- 2:00:27flipping back and forth between them at a much better pace.
- 2:00:31And in Part 2 it felt really uneven.
- 2:00:34So I see where that person is coming from.
- 2:00:37Where they said it was like he was his own, he had his own,
- 2:00:43like part of the drama. 3rd lead like a third lead.
- 2:00:45I don't know. The fact that he was like a
- 2:00:48third lead. So like not the first lead, but
- 2:00:50a third lead. Well, I don't know what that
- 2:00:55means. 3rd lead in his own drama for part of the show. 3rd lead
- 2:00:59in his own drama for part of the show.
- 2:01:00So like not the lead? Interesting.
- 2:01:03Oh, is it because like of this big like love triangle square?
- 2:01:08I I. Well, it's not even like a love
- 2:01:10triangle at this point. It's like so many players,
- 2:01:13right? Oh.
- 2:01:14Yeah. So love the I love rhombus so.
- 2:01:23I I don't know. Just joking.
- 2:01:26I don't. OK, maybe.
- 2:01:29I feel like. I don't know.
- 2:01:31I didn't feel that way. I don't feel that he was like.
- 2:01:35OK. I always felt like he was the
- 2:01:38first lead. Yeah, I don't think he was the
- 2:01:423rd lead. OK, so another person's let's
- 2:01:46talk about the ending of part one where she chooses her family
- 2:01:51instead of being selfish and running away with him.
- 2:01:52OK, this is where a lot of people were pissed at.
- 2:01:54Guilty because she didn't elope with him and I.
- 2:02:03The problem with that is that she it happens late.
- 2:02:08Like the problem is later because she felt such loyalty
- 2:02:12toward her family, like all this love and devotion toward her
- 2:02:15family, her father, her siblings, the women that she
- 2:02:19went through the invasion years with and stuff.
- 2:02:23So all of that, it was like, no wonder that she didn't elope
- 2:02:29with him, because what was that life gonna be like?
- 2:02:32Yeah, I feel like my like my own.
- 2:02:36This is another like where I kind of put my own self into
- 2:02:40this because I was like, I totally understand because she
- 2:02:45had, you know, her loyalty. Well, yeah, same thing.
- 2:02:49Like, you know, she, she felt like she had that burden to
- 2:02:54carry to take care of her father, you know, and to take
- 2:02:56care of her siblings because, you know, they don't, first of
- 2:03:00all, her father can't, you know, can't take care of himself.
- 2:03:04He has a little brother and that needs someone to raise.
- 2:03:07And the sister is not there yet to like really take care of the
- 2:03:10household. So yeah.
- 2:03:19I see where she's coming from too, with the relationship with
- 2:03:21him, because he's constantly leaving he.
- 2:03:25He's known to not. He is constantly in and out of
- 2:03:29her life and not a consistent part of it, right?
- 2:03:33Like, absolutely. He helps her in times of need.
- 2:03:35Absolutely. He's trying to keep her alive.
- 2:03:38But I feel like she picks the the security like the secure
- 2:03:44choice. Yeah.
- 2:03:47And I think in that society, love is a luxury.
- 2:03:52True. And at that point she didn't
- 2:03:53have that luxury. She, you know what I'm saying?
- 2:03:55Like she couldn't afford it. Exactly.
- 2:03:58And. Yeah.
- 2:03:59So I I see where she was coming from.
- 2:04:02I see that she would had so much love for him and wanted to be
- 2:04:07with Tang Hyun, but he's a he's a bet.
- 2:04:10Yeah, that's like she's betting her life on him.
- 2:04:15We are introduced to him and how the whole non goody town knows
- 2:04:19him that he doesn't stay and he knows it too.
- 2:04:22He doesn't stay in one town for that long.
- 2:04:24He decides because of her to be like, I'm going to, I'm going to
- 2:04:27prove her wrong, I'm going to establish my life here and then
- 2:04:29goody no. So he was kind of already known
- 2:04:32for, like, not really being stable.
- 2:04:35Not really. Putting down roots and being
- 2:04:37this perpetual bachelor and you can't pin him down.
- 2:04:40Not that he. Wouldn't know.
- 2:04:41She didn't really know him exactly.
- 2:04:45She didn't really know him. So I get it.
- 2:04:48And the problem comes later for me.
- 2:04:51It's when she, like, after the fact, after she moves out on her
- 2:04:58own post divorce with Jong Jong. Yes, she had like, her father
- 2:05:04just came in and tried to kill her.
- 2:05:10And that was like a whole traumatic experience.
- 2:05:12I don't think I would ever fully recover after that.
- 2:05:16And she's like, why don't you and they take care of my family
- 2:05:20for me and I'll come back for them.
- 2:05:23So right. She never does.
- 2:05:25She never. Comes back for.
- 2:05:26Her mentally ill father for the younger sister, she leaves the
- 2:05:30brother behind. And the promise of taking care
- 2:05:33of them, of the helpless little brother, the bratty little
- 2:05:37sister, even going so far as to vow to give her sister like this
- 2:05:40fine wedding, All of these promises fell by the wayside,
- 2:05:45and she refused to elope with Jonghin because of her fiance,
- 2:05:51basically holding her family hostage.
- 2:05:53But like, what happened to that? Like the family after the family
- 2:05:58after she moves out? That's a thing it's in.
- 2:06:01We never see the family again. Yeah.
- 2:06:04Like her father, the brother the What happened to them?
- 2:06:07Who's taking care of them? That's the thing where, yeah,
- 2:06:11where it's like, OK, I get you, but.
- 2:06:14I get you in the in the middle like of the show.
- 2:06:16I get you in between part one and Part 2, but at the end of
- 2:06:19the show. And then she spends all this
- 2:06:21time looking for Chung Hyun because he's missing.
- 2:06:24And then they finally reveal that there was no body, so like
- 2:06:27he could be alive somewhere. She goes in search of him.
- 2:06:30Like who the fuck cares about the family at that point?
- 2:06:33But like, I think that's a huge part of her.
- 2:06:37I mean, I mean, unless she was like, you know what I should
- 2:06:40have this is, yeah. You know, so that was my issue
- 2:06:47with not the ending of part one, but the ending of the whole
- 2:06:51show. They didn't quite resolve that
- 2:06:55the way that I think they should have.
- 2:06:58Unless they're just implying like she.
- 2:06:59Someone said they liked the 1st 10 episodes and so they said
- 2:07:04like the 1st 10 episodes then was implausible and too
- 2:07:07repetitive. Bad writing.
- 2:07:08Acting was great. I sort of agree with that in a
- 2:07:12very in a very minor way, which I already I think I already.
- 2:07:16Said agree it was repetitive, but yeah, agreed minor.
- 2:07:25Let's talk about. So we already talked about
- 2:07:28Iyangam being a plot device. Like a shameless plot device.
- 2:07:32We already talked about Gilche and her I know, and the loyalty
- 2:07:36to her family. Oh my God.
- 2:07:38Let's talk about the amnesia trope that they had not once,
- 2:07:40twice, but twice in the show. OK, once.
- 2:07:44Once. OK.
- 2:07:46Because I I don't even like I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm kind of, you know,
- 2:07:50cheesy and corny. Like I do like a good amnesia
- 2:07:53trope. But they did it twice.
- 2:07:56I'm like, was it? Necessary.
- 2:07:59Yeah. No, no, it wasn't necessary.
- 2:08:02I think the first one I was kind of going with it, and then the
- 2:08:05second one I was like fuck out of here.
- 2:08:07But now that I'm removed from the show a little bit, I think
- 2:08:10they should have cut out the first one.
- 2:08:11And then this one, right? Left the last one.
- 2:08:15That would have been more impactful because I feel like
- 2:08:18the first one was like, really? I mean, I mean, it was kind of
- 2:08:23cute. It was just like it was felt
- 2:08:24like filler, like she was taking care of him.
- 2:08:29He couldn't remember her, and he was like they.
- 2:08:31Probably got some like some notes from.
- 2:08:35They had some cute moments together.
- 2:08:38She was kissing him on the cheek and hugging up on him and he was
- 2:08:41like, what the fuck are you doing, lady?
- 2:08:42Who are you? And she was like, we're allowed
- 2:08:45to do this, like that sort of stuff.
- 2:08:48It was cute, I know, But that I could have done without it
- 2:08:52though. For sure.
- 2:08:54It's the amnesia thing. Like, bro, it's 2023.
- 2:09:00Even me who likes it, I was like and I do.
- 2:09:04I was shocked. I honestly wasn't expecting it.
- 2:09:08But then I'm like, oh, OK, like we're gonna do this right now.
- 2:09:12And then the second time around, we're gonna do this again.
- 2:09:14OK, cool. I feel like they.
- 2:09:17I feel like they got the writer got notes.
- 2:09:20Like we need more them two together.
- 2:09:23What do you got? What do you got?
- 2:09:27I can give him amnesia and then they're like, we got to have a
- 2:09:32reason for him to, like, disappear at the end of the show
- 2:09:35to match, like the fact that Jangam isn't been in prison, and
- 2:09:38because otherwise Jangam Jangam would have definitely busted the
- 2:09:42Yangam. Oh yeah.
- 2:09:43Out of out of the sanatorium. Had he known he was?
- 2:09:46There. Yes, exactly.
- 2:09:49And how did he end up there? So.
- 2:09:52OK, that's another. That's the that's what I said.
- 2:09:55I was like, why? Why is he even in there, OK and
- 2:09:58not in a regular prison? Why was it?
- 2:10:00Why was he left alive? Did he feign insanity?
- 2:10:03Like I have all these questions? It doesn't matter anyway.
- 2:10:06Amnesia. Twice.
- 2:10:07I feel like that was a misstep. The ending reminded me of the
- 2:10:12crowned clown. Have you seen that show?
- 2:10:14I haven't. OK, you got to see it.
- 2:10:16It's amazing. Oh shit.
- 2:10:18I might spoil it for you. OK.
- 2:10:23It's out of my God, the end. OK.
- 2:10:26The ending of Crown Clown is basically everyone thinks that
- 2:10:30he died. The male lead dies but in fact
- 2:10:33he was injured and then comes back years later after being in
- 2:10:36a coma and like some random good-natured man like taking
- 2:10:40care of of like of his feeble unconscious body for years,
- 2:10:44which is not how like comas work, but OK.
- 2:10:50OK. It was like the worst, the
- 2:10:52worst. Like, little like hiccup in the
- 2:10:54in the ending on the way to a happy ending.
- 2:10:58And that's kind of what happened here, right?
- 2:11:00Like, he goes missing for all of these years and he was injured.
- 2:11:05And it turns out that he was retracing his steps in their
- 2:11:09relationship without him realizing exactly who he's
- 2:11:14recalling and sets up this life together based on one of the
- 2:11:21last conversations that they had.
- 2:11:23Which, again, this makes no sense.
- 2:11:25That's not really appealing. Very plausible as far as memory
- 2:11:30loss goes, but OK. That ring has to be a powerful
- 2:11:35ring or something. It has, it's it it it has
- 2:11:38powers. Oh, guilty, said she did curse
- 2:11:41it cause twice. Yeah, true, true, he.
- 2:11:45Dropped it twice and all of a sudden he has his back, right?
- 2:11:49Didn't he drop it again at the beach?
- 2:11:51I swear he dropped it again. Yeah, he did drop it.
- 2:11:53Yes, he did. So here's what I like.
- 2:11:55Here's what I liked about the ending is that, well, I guess we
- 2:12:00have to go back to Kilche's dream because she had a
- 2:12:03recurring dream. I personally have vivid dreams.
- 2:12:09So if I had, if we had this recurring dream of running to
- 2:12:14catch up to the red string of fate, only to never catch a
- 2:12:18glimpse of my beloved on the beach during golden hour, I'd be
- 2:12:22fucking concerned. But she was like I keep having
- 2:12:26this dream, the same dream every time.
- 2:12:28I can never catch up. Look at.
- 2:12:29Him the same dream. Weird.
- 2:12:32So I was like very concerned for her, But then at the end of the
- 2:12:36show, with Kilte and Jong Hyun on the beach, her finding him,
- 2:12:41it's just like her dream, which was.
- 2:12:45Literally. When?
- 2:12:46Like a port end of what was going to happen?
- 2:12:48Jump through hoops. She wanders the land in search
- 2:12:51of her love and finds him on the beach, and at first it's about
- 2:12:56her realizing or recognizing him, but in the end it's a
- 2:12:59reversal with it being about him recognizing her that.
- 2:13:06Is so true. Which I liked that bit that like
- 2:13:11full circle nature of it and like it being a call back to the
- 2:13:17dream and stuff, That's fine. But.
- 2:13:22That's fine, but it, I don't know.
- 2:13:27It's just not 100. I guess.
- 2:13:31And does she ever? Yeah.
- 2:13:32Does she ever figure out that it's him?
- 2:13:37What do you mean? Yeah, she does.
- 2:13:39She realizes it's him. Yeah, in her dream.
- 2:13:43Cuz I feel like she was, Or she was just denying it.
- 2:13:45What was that after? No, no, no.
- 2:13:48She. Yeah, She realized it was him
- 2:13:51the whole time. Like he was the one.
- 2:13:54He was the one. He is the one, OK, Yeah.
- 2:13:59Yeah. I mean, yeah.
- 2:14:01So the only other person that we haven't talked about is the
- 2:14:04Ching Princess Kakwa. I mean, hi.
- 2:14:08Yes. So here's my problem with her.
- 2:14:13It is just, I'm gonna go real fast because we've been here a
- 2:14:15while. So this is just another foul
- 2:14:18woman who's had everything she's ever wanted getting murderous
- 2:14:22because she can't have a man. It's tired.
- 2:14:26It's tired. It's been done to death.
- 2:14:28Seriously. The chatter online was that,
- 2:14:31yeah, so the chatter online was that NBC, which is the network
- 2:14:36that aired the show, insisted that this happened, that she
- 2:14:40like be a recurring character in Part 2 because they think it's
- 2:14:44an epic reunion of actors. Because both her and Nam Kunmin
- 2:14:49were in Awaken and $1.00 lawyer together.
- 2:14:54To which I say they're not Kate and Leo, OK?
- 2:14:58They're not Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan.
- 2:15:01So like, settle down, NBC. If that was true, like, who
- 2:15:07cares? Like, who the fuck cares?
- 2:15:08Yeah, I thought that her character was doing too much
- 2:15:12like it seemed like she was. She was a device.
- 2:15:15Cat playing with a toy. She was a device, but she was
- 2:15:18also like kind of a a cat playing with a toy.
- 2:15:21I expected her to get bored and move on to some other.
- 2:15:24Thing, I mean, she looked. By the time that and I was like,
- 2:15:29not her going all the way to Korea just to drag him back.
- 2:15:34Girl, here's the thing, the whole that character, every time
- 2:15:39she was on screen, I felt so uncomfortable.
- 2:15:43What a smug bitch. Girl.
- 2:15:47Like I could not. I was so uncomfortable and
- 2:15:50uneasy. And I'm like, oh, can we move
- 2:15:52along these scenes? And there was so like, awkward.
- 2:15:55And I know that they're trying to do like some kind of tension
- 2:15:58between them. But I'm like, it's not about me.
- 2:16:00Like, it's just like she's looking at him with these dead
- 2:16:03eyes. And like, he's just like.
- 2:16:06Like there's nothing. No, humanity.
- 2:16:08There her like he wants to kill her.
- 2:16:11So like, just have him kill her. No, I'm just kidding.
- 2:16:14Just it was just like, I didn't enjoy the scenes that they had
- 2:16:17together. So I feel like like there was no
- 2:16:20point with her. Literally just a device.
- 2:16:25Yeah, something else that was annoying in the last few
- 2:16:29episodes. The reveal.
- 2:16:30That was it. Girl.
- 2:16:37This wasn't the final few episodes that they touch on,
- 2:16:40this recurring nightmare slash repressed memory, and we get the
- 2:16:44full story, and even though it's really like a chunky story, like
- 2:16:50really kind of interesting and impressive, it they had this
- 2:16:56intense moment too with the father and him, This reunion
- 2:16:59scene where he's like, I'm going to take away everything you
- 2:17:01loved, I took away something that was precious with you from
- 2:17:03you and blah blah blah, it's it's too late.
- 2:17:07Like too. Little too late.
- 2:17:09We're too much too late. By this time, I'm like, I don't
- 2:17:12it was. Give it to me like it was too
- 2:17:15much, too late. And I like the I liked it.
- 2:17:20Like by itself. It's good because it had like it
- 2:17:23was touching on the hypocrisy and like the deconstruction of
- 2:17:27his father's problematic ideals and like his murderous politics.
- 2:17:32But all this happened too late, which makes it seem half baked.
- 2:17:35No, Yeah. By the time that it came to
- 2:17:39fruition, I was like, no, one can't at this point.
- 2:17:43We're just going to just move this alone and make sure that
- 2:17:46our main characters get together.
- 2:17:48And you know, maybe if they trickled it in a little bit so
- 2:17:52that we can anticipate it, at least for me at least I can
- 2:17:54anticipate it. Because even his, from my
- 2:17:58memory, his, his flashbacks, I just remember that he's outside
- 2:18:03in the pouring rain and he's looking at this gate and it's
- 2:18:06like someone's getting beat. And I he's yelling out for his
- 2:18:10father. And the whole time I thought it
- 2:18:12was his father getting beat because no, I'm like, where did
- 2:18:18I go wrong? Like, what did I miss?
- 2:18:22Because then later on it was the dad beating the guy.
- 2:18:25I'm like, what? I'm I'm not like, what did I
- 2:18:29miss that? I didn't get that.
- 2:18:30I didn't get that because, you know, he, we played around with
- 2:18:34the whole, oh, he's not a real noble guy or a noble man, you
- 2:18:36know, And it turns out. He bought his title and he was
- 2:18:42noble. So I'm like.
- 2:18:43Yes, it was like, I don't know it was just too much like a lot
- 2:18:49of back story thrown at us in a very little amount.
- 2:18:52It's not. It's just an exposition dump
- 2:18:54because and it was important, like I think it was important
- 2:18:59because he you needed to know all this, to know why he feels
- 2:19:04that's this way about society, why he's such a trend, what's
- 2:19:09the what's the word that he's like going against trends.
- 2:19:14He's such a rebel. That's it.
- 2:19:17He is such a rebel and feels this way about women in society
- 2:19:24and women's place in society and how he's so like real and and
- 2:19:31ahead of his time liberal. He's so liberal with his
- 2:19:37thoughts about like women and and purity culture and stuff
- 2:19:42like that. It's because of the situation
- 2:19:44that happened in his past where his sister committed suicide
- 2:19:49because the father would not accept this relationship between
- 2:19:52her and the servant because this.
- 2:19:54And then there was this whole thing of like the servant was
- 2:19:58the last family of some. I'm like.
- 2:20:01Like other noble family that the dad, like, unjustly took down.
- 2:20:06And so he was working in the household and the father didn't
- 2:20:09trust that he, like, truly loved her, that this was just a ploy
- 2:20:13for him to get revenge for his. I was like, what the fuck this
- 2:20:17is too. Much I would.
- 2:20:18I would listen. It's OK if he's not a noble man.
- 2:20:24It's OK, noble man. That's true.
- 2:20:27It's OK. We're going to be OK.
- 2:20:31If if the servant was not a no good and even if you know John
- 2:20:36Hyun wasn't one, it would have been fine too.
- 2:20:39But you're right though, that back story was important to see
- 2:20:43why he's like that. You know where it came from and
- 2:20:45stuff like that. But.
- 2:20:48Why he's so compassionate toward her?
- 2:20:50And compassionate towards towards that you know, but we
- 2:20:54got it like at. The Unbelievable.
- 2:20:58That's the end. 02 more things, Two more nitpicks that I have.
- 2:21:01I don't know if you have these same picky nits, but I don't
- 2:21:04think Anne should have taken background.
- 2:21:06Doing say that again. They should have stayed broken.
- 2:21:10Up. They should have stayed broken.
- 2:21:11Up she goes to visit. She goes back to the house.
- 2:21:15The house is of mess and he's like, can I come with you Back
- 2:21:20to Nungun. Shameless.
- 2:21:22Call him the audacious. The audacious.
- 2:21:24The Audacious. No, I can't.
- 2:21:28Like. The shamelessness on him because
- 2:21:32he killed, he basically kills Jiang Hen and saves him at the
- 2:21:35same time like this backward ass way he like saves him, but he's
- 2:21:40been nothing but ruthless to her after she bared her soul to him.
- 2:21:47And Endei was such a precious soul.
- 2:21:48She didn't deserve that at all. He did not deserve her at.
- 2:21:53All. Yongjun did not deserve her, so
- 2:21:56I don't think she should have taken him back.
- 2:21:57And number last thing I have here is Big Hyung Nim.
- 2:22:01Did he did he have to die? Actually, I don't think he did.
- 2:22:05They. Big Hyung Nim played by one of
- 2:22:08the best actors to Trey MU. Oh my God, Trey MU Song.
- 2:22:14I love that actor. He's been in so many things and
- 2:22:17I don't think he had to die. Like I thought they were going
- 2:22:19to give him a little arc for him to get over his own misogyny and
- 2:22:23unfair prejudice and get with that Lady who ended up
- 2:22:25tragically losing her baby. I was.
- 2:22:29Waiting I was waiting for. That never happened.
- 2:22:30He died. I'm like don't give, don't tease
- 2:22:33me like that, Don't tease me with.
- 2:22:35Don't tease me. Because I'm like, you're giving
- 2:22:38little hints here and there between them too.
- 2:22:41And I'm like, oh, nothing, He died.
- 2:22:44I'm like, OK, Yep, that was unnecessary.
- 2:22:48Yeah, He didn't have to die for sure.
- 2:22:50I don't think so. Yeah, I will always remember
- 2:22:54them kissing in the fields. That is such an iconic scene.
- 2:22:58In part one, I. Love that scene.
- 2:22:59Iconic scene, lots of sweeping shots, color and movement in the
- 2:23:04cinematography and I will always remember some of that OST as
- 2:23:08well. Good stuff.
- 2:23:09Yeah, my basic notes are well casted and well OST like the
- 2:23:17OST. I love that.
- 2:23:20Well, OST. The OST just fits so perfect.
- 2:23:26I was like, oh, this is so good. Perfect for this, the, you know,
- 2:23:29psychic. And just for the whole, Yeah, I
- 2:23:34loved it. Epic.
- 2:23:36I have come to the end of my notes.
- 2:23:38They were extensive. I'm so sorry, but I had to get
- 2:23:41it all out now so that I can close the book on the my dearest
- 2:23:45era for myself. OK.
- 2:23:47Do you have anything else you want to add to Rush?
- 2:23:49See, my last notes are I said, I said that.
- 2:23:54I said that I have to do an honorable mention.
- 2:24:00OK, so we don't really touch much on the king.
- 2:24:04He was trash. Oh my God, the.
- 2:24:07King. He was definitely trash.
- 2:24:10What a. Farce.
- 2:24:12But however I did actually, I think I really like Crown
- 2:24:17Prince. Like, I really liked his
- 2:24:19character, even though he wasn't a.
- 2:24:21Interesting. He wasn't a perfect character,
- 2:24:23but I liked his development and where he came from.
- 2:24:27And then at one point he was like he he was able to see.
- 2:24:32I feel like he would have been a good king.
- 2:24:34He was able to develop. Into a good king.
- 2:24:36And with the help of, you know, John Han too.
- 2:24:40And I feel like it was a shame that he died.
- 2:24:43It was a shame that he died. It was a shame that he died.
- 2:24:46Were you surprised when he died? I was so shocked.
- 2:24:50I was shocked like he was. So he was looking really sickly
- 2:24:55and tasty throughout the like progressively throughout the
- 2:24:59show and he ends up finally back home in Korea or toss on.
- 2:25:04And when he says like, oh, I have to wait for the Crown
- 2:25:08Princess to for her to come back with her like porridge or
- 2:25:12something like that, milk tea or something she was going to bring
- 2:25:16him. And then that's it.
- 2:25:19He fucking like breathes his last right there, like open
- 2:25:21eyes, just the soul leaves the body.
- 2:25:24And I was like, what? I was shocked.
- 2:25:27That's it though. That's it.
- 2:25:29That's it. Because.
- 2:25:31That's all he said. I was very annoyed because him
- 2:25:39his interaction between him and Jong Hyun, I loved.
- 2:25:44I loved it so much because they challenge each other well, Jong
- 2:25:48Hyun challenged him so much and. Yes.
- 2:25:52As much as like you know. Questioned his authority?
- 2:25:57Invalid. Ways definitely.
- 2:25:59And at some point he starts to get it and he starts to like be
- 2:26:04open, open minded. And it's just such a shame
- 2:26:07because he could have been a good king.
- 2:26:08And I feel like they I was just expecting and their relationship
- 2:26:13between John Kian and the Crown Prince to develop which I was
- 2:26:17happy when he when John Kian said to the king like I was not
- 2:26:22just the interpreter, I was a very cherished his.
- 2:26:26Cherished. Interpreter So I feel like
- 2:26:29justice to Crown Prince, even though, like he wasn't, you
- 2:26:32know, the best. He was a little, he was a little
- 2:26:36nasty earlier. But I feel like it's it was a
- 2:26:42good got like you know 2 male. Well they're not friends but how
- 2:26:48they're you know he John, he had just impacted him.
- 2:26:52He just impacted him. There was like a mutual respect
- 2:26:55there by the end. Because they kept looking for
- 2:26:56John Young. What do I do now, bro?
- 2:26:59Yeah, you know, And he's done. Yeah, he was a playmaker.
- 2:27:02And so I just yeah. Also shout out to the Crown
- 2:27:05Princess who died really brutally, like she was poisoned
- 2:27:10for days. It was bad.
- 2:27:11It was bad. She got framed by the by the
- 2:27:17concubine that she was leaving trinkets around the palace that
- 2:27:22were cursing her elders and the the the king.
- 2:27:26That was a little frustrating to.
- 2:27:27It was dumb as shit, all right? It was dumb.
- 2:27:29That's it. Yeah.
- 2:27:31Anyway, great show, great show, great show.
- 2:27:33I got a great time. Great show.
- 2:27:36Yeah, highly recommend. If you've come this far.
- 2:27:38I am so sorry, but we might have spoiled the whole show for you.
- 2:27:42It was a happy ending. Finally, I think everyone was.
- 2:27:45It's not that I'm upset that it was a happy ending, I'm just
- 2:27:48upset the the little baby journey that we took at the end
- 2:27:50there was like a little necessary.
- 2:27:53Annoying but. Yeah.
- 2:27:54Whatever. That's it though.
- 2:27:58We've come to the end of it. Sarai, I want to thank you so
- 2:28:00much for coming on this show and for spending all of this time
- 2:28:03and coming prepared and just being so enthusiastic about my
- 2:28:07dearest with me. Because I was like, look, I was
- 2:28:10like looking for someone to share this experience with who
- 2:28:14would just, like, get it and be super on board with doing this
- 2:28:18last minute episode that I was like, you know what, I think we,
- 2:28:21I think I need to talk about this.
