- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here and it is Wednesday.
- 0:16It's the 4th of February and it's great to have your company.
- 0:19Thank you for tapping on play. We have finished off the Gospel
- 0:24of Luke yesterday and today we begin our fantastic book.
- 0:29It's actually becoming one of my favourites.
- 0:32The more I read it the more I love it.
- 0:34This is the book of first John. These epistles that John writes,
- 0:39he writes 3 letters. They are as much a sequel to his
- 0:43gospel as Acts is a sequel to Luke's gospel.
- 0:46This is written not about the the period just after Jesus
- 0:49resurrection, but these are letters that John writes to
- 0:53these Christian communities who are going through these terrible
- 0:57fractures where these separatists are pulling away
- 1:01from the early church separatists that believe Jesus
- 1:05came to be the Christ to to be the vehicle of salvation.
- 1:09And that is the beginning and end of Jesus work.
- 1:12And what John writes to them to urge them about is that Jesus
- 1:17doesn't just come to redeem humanity, but also he comes to
- 1:22show the love, the love of God the Father for us and the love
- 1:26that we are to have for each other as Christians.
- 1:30And he argues that this love is most clearly displayed and
- 1:34modelled for us in Jesus sacrificial death.
- 1:38So that is what he is urging in these beautiful letters, just
- 1:42dripping with love and compassion and urging people to
- 1:47see. And our God is indeed a God of
- 1:49love. So how can you not love this?
- 1:52I do not know. So we are going to read this
- 1:55over the next 5 days. And it's beautiful and I hope
- 1:58that it captures you as much as it captures me.
- 2:01Holy Spirit, let us see you and your love for us as we read
- 2:06these words. All right friends, let us read
- 2:10together first. John, Chapter 1.
- 2:22We proclaim to you the one who existed from the beginning, whom
- 2:26we have heard and seen. We saw him with our own eyes and
- 2:30touched Him with our own hands. He is the word of life.
- 2:36This one who is life itself was revealed to us, and we have seen
- 2:42Him. And now we testify and proclaim
- 2:45to you that He is the one who is eternal life.
- 2:50He was with the Father and then He was revealed to us.
- 2:55We proclaim to you that we ourselves have actually seen and
- 2:59heard so that you may have fellowship with us.
- 3:03And our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus
- 3:07Christ. We are writing these things so
- 3:11that you may fully share our joy.
- 3:15This is the message we heard from Jesus and now we declare to
- 3:19you, God is light and there is no darkness in him at all.
- 3:26So we are lying if we say we have fellowship with God but go
- 3:30on living in spiritual darkness. We are not practising the truth.
- 3:36But if we are living in the light as God is in the light,
- 3:40then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of
- 3:44Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.
- 3:48If we claim we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and
- 3:52not living in the truth. But if we confess our sins to
- 3:56Him, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to
- 4:01cleanse us from all wickedness. If we claim we have not sinned,
- 4:06we are calling God a liar and showing that His Word has no
- 4:11place in our hearts. Ah Jesus, you do indeed change
- 4:24everything, and not just in this grand eschatological way,
- 4:29changing the end of the world and the destiny of all humans
- 4:34that choose to believe in you and giving us eternal life.
- 4:38Yes, all these grand changes that you have made, but you
- 4:41change life here now, today, in this moment that you call us to
- 4:47be a part of your way of light, and you call us to love and to
- 4:53live in deep fellowship with each other.
- 4:58So, Lord, I pray that as we know that our destiny is saved in
- 5:02you, Lord, I pray that you change each step that we make,
- 5:07that we walk kindly and gently and humbly with each other to
- 5:14love and to forgive and to encourage and to bring your
- 5:19Kingdom into this world here and now.
- 5:22Thank you for entrusting us with this incredible mission, this
- 5:26mission that we need your help with.
- 5:29So, Lord, transform us, shape us, and use us.
- 5:33And we pray this in your transformational and wonderful
- 5:36name, Jesus, Amen.
