- 0:01Speaker 1: Local News Now, a VOCM News Update.
- 0:05Speaker 2: I'm Sarah Strickland. Despite its own safety concerns, the town
- 0:09Speaker 2: of Conception Bay South is moving forward with a plan
- 0:12Speaker 2: to rent e-bikes to residents. The municipality and the federal
- 0:16Speaker 2: government announced funding for the initiative earlier this week, which
- 0:20Speaker 2: includes funding to purchase e-bikes for public use on the trailway.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Mayor Darren Bent points to other urban municipalities that already
- 0:28Speaker 2: rent out e-bikes, but admits he remains very concerned about
- 0:32Speaker 2: the overall safety of e-bikes and e-scooters in the community.
- 0:36Speaker 1: Concepcion Bay South is very pleased to be able to
- 0:38Speaker 1: offer these urban style amenities, lockers, places for people to
- 0:43Speaker 1: get outside and enjoy, and e-bikes are one of them,
- 0:46Speaker 1: and of course the efficiency of an e-bike and so forth,
- 0:49Speaker 1: but What I'll say about regulations, of course we need
- 0:51Speaker 1: regulations with them. We're very concerned about what we're seeing
- 0:55Speaker 1: as what I would call unsafe use of e-bikes, but
- 0:58Speaker 1: mostly e-scooters in our community. And we're looking very forward
- 1:02Speaker 1: to the province's look into regulations and making that safer
- 1:07Speaker 1: for everybody.
- 1:08Speaker 2: A recent Angus Reid survey shows that Mark Carney's response
- 1:12Speaker 2: in the face of rising tensions with the United States
- 1:15Speaker 2: has resulted in what some are calling a Trump bump
- 1:18Speaker 2: in his approval ratings. The latest poll results show that
- 1:21Speaker 2: three in five Canadians approve of the prime minister's performance,
- 1:25Speaker 2: up 11 points from August. The increase comes after three-quarters
- 1:30Speaker 2: of Canadians surveyed indicated that Carney was right to walk
- 1:33Speaker 2: away from trade negotiations in the face of new U.S. demands. However,
- 1:38Speaker 2: Canadians are divided on Canada's bargaining power. 31% say the
- 1:42Speaker 2: country is in a strong negotiating position, while 34% say
- 1:45Speaker 2: it is weak. Most of Canada is in for a drier,
- 1:51Speaker 2: warmer fall. The Weather Network's fall forecast predicts above-average temperatures
- 1:56Speaker 2: and below-average precipitation for most regions of the country. Areas
- 2:01Speaker 2: along the B.C. coast and Atlantic Canada are in line
- 2:05Speaker 2: for a more typical fall. But the Weather Network's meteorologists
- 2:08Speaker 2: say an unprecedented El Nino could introduce some surprises and
- 2:13Speaker 2: uncertainty into the forecast. A new mural commemorating the outpouring
- 2:18Speaker 2: of kindness shown by residents of Gander and surrounding area
- 2:22Speaker 2: in the days following the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001,
- 2:26Speaker 2: was officially unveiled at Gander International yesterday. The mosaic shows
- 2:31Speaker 2: a pair of hands coming together to form a heart
- 2:33Speaker 2: and is made from hundreds of tiles painted by more
- 2:36Speaker 2: than 600 local residents and businesses. This Friday marks 25
- 2:41Speaker 2: years since Newfoundland and Labrador took in thousands of stranded
- 2:45Speaker 2: airline passengers after North American airspace was shut down in
- 2:49Speaker 2: the wake of the terrorist attacks on the United States.
- 2:52Speaker 2: That's your news. I'm Sarah Strickland.
