- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome back to Mayor Spoke House Barbecue. It is the
- 0:02Speaker 1: Yukon Hockey Coaches Show for a Monday nights and we've
- 0:04Speaker 1: got Friday night ice on the radio for you this
- 0:07Speaker 1: weekend as it's our last game on the radio of
- 0:10Speaker 1: the first semester. It'll be Yukon and Merrimack from the
- 0:14Speaker 1: ice box known as Lawala Rink. I'll be there, Solo
- 0:16Speaker 1: is that will be having football duties that weekend, six
- 0:19Speaker 1: forty five on the radio here in the Yukon Sports Network.
- 0:22Speaker 1: We'll get to Merrimac a little later with Mike Kavanaugh.
- 0:25Speaker 1: You had a friend show up yesterday. That's the rink
- 0:28Speaker 1: by the way. Anytime I get ready to do my
- 0:30Speaker 1: pregame interview with Gino, he's always asking about your hockey team.
- 0:34Speaker 2: Always well, he's such a good friend. But you know,
- 0:36Speaker 2: before we get you know the to Lala and Rink.
- 0:40Speaker 2: That's where I played my high school hockey.
- 0:42Speaker 3: You know, no kidding, I grew.
- 0:44Speaker 2: Up playing in that rink. And no, the freezer crew
- 0:49Speaker 2: from South Windsor who's right there in the ice lounge
- 0:52Speaker 2: for many games. I don't know if you've ever seen them,
- 0:54Speaker 2: Joe the Plumber and yeah, Kevin Sharbono and Matt Woodcock
- 0:58Speaker 2: and Mario Costa, the whole crew of them. They're they're
- 1:01Speaker 2: coming up for the game, I think so at Merrimack.
- 1:03Speaker 2: Joe's daughter goes to Merrimac, so they're they're great supporters
- 1:07Speaker 2: and they know Gino as well. But I'm sure it's
- 1:10Speaker 2: just we have a special relationship, you know, Gino and I,
- 1:15Speaker 2: and it's grown since the twelve years have been here.
- 1:17Speaker 2: And he was there in the he was there at
- 1:21Speaker 2: the press conference right afterwards, waiting in my office after
- 1:24Speaker 2: the game. But it was great. We went to dinner
- 1:26Speaker 2: afterwards at his place and it's great. It's what's nice
- 1:30Speaker 2: about it is I can share different ideas with him,
- 1:34Speaker 2: and believe it or not, the two sports are very similar.
- 1:39Speaker 2: You know, people don't see it, but it's really trying
- 1:42Speaker 2: to find a two on one and you know there's
- 1:44Speaker 2: picks and you're trying to create a two on one
- 1:46Speaker 2: in an odd manned situation. And it's just like we're
- 1:49Speaker 2: not going to defend out it the blue line as
- 1:52Speaker 2: hard as we're going to defend in front of the net,
- 1:54Speaker 2: just like sometimes you're gonna let a guy shoot a
- 1:56Speaker 2: three if you don't think he can make it. You know,
- 1:57Speaker 2: you want to protect the lane. Is a lot of
- 2:00Speaker 2: similarities that we talk about, and I'll watch his practices
- 2:02Speaker 2: and get drills for myself watching his practices.
- 2:06Speaker 4: Sometimes that you're in the new building, I mean it's
- 2:09Speaker 4: a couple of hundred yards away from the old building.
- 2:12Speaker 4: Are you did that make it harder to connect with
- 2:14Speaker 4: one another? Not that you were ever in gamble, he
- 2:16Speaker 4: was never really here.
- 2:17Speaker 2: No, I think you know, it's easy enough. I mean
- 2:21Speaker 2: we're both very busy. It's not like it's not like
- 2:23Speaker 2: I see him every day, you know, but when I
- 2:26Speaker 2: if I had, you know, I'm probably I'll see what
- 2:28Speaker 2: we have going on Thursday night, but my wife and
- 2:31Speaker 2: I are doing anything, I'll go watch his game down
- 2:33Speaker 2: the Excel Center, and you know, when time, you know
- 2:38Speaker 2: it's affordable, I will go support his team just like
- 2:41Speaker 2: he does as well. But I'll do that for all
- 2:43Speaker 2: the teams that you can.
- 2:44Speaker 3: Yeah, how's his golf game these years?
- 2:46Speaker 2: These? Yay? I heard he played very very well the
- 2:49Speaker 2: other day. I didn't have a chance to play. I
- 2:51Speaker 2: was invited to play with him, but unfortunately I do
- 2:55Speaker 2: have a day job this time of year, so it's
- 2:57Speaker 2: a little harder to get out and it's painful with
- 3:00Speaker 2: this seventy degree weather. I'll tell you that I.
- 3:02Speaker 1: Played last week. Yeah, I got my last round in
- 3:04Speaker 1: on Thursday, and then yeah that's it. With the week
- 3:06Speaker 1: I've got yet, it's like, yeah, we're done.
- 3:07Speaker 2: Yeah, it was kind of a season.
- 3:09Speaker 1: Adam and I tried to play once a year and
- 3:12Speaker 1: we always play up at Raceway up in Thompson. But
- 3:14Speaker 1: I think we're gonna have to try Connecticut National. I've
- 3:16Speaker 1: heard nothing but good things that I know you had.
- 3:18Speaker 2: Avatur, my old my teammate from Bowden. He owns it
- 3:21Speaker 2: and he's done. Although they just had unfortunate fire in
- 3:25Speaker 2: the clubhouse, this is not affecting the golf course. Yeah,
- 3:27Speaker 2: and he's going to be able to build and build better,
- 3:29Speaker 2: I think. But it's a awesome, awesome spot.
- 3:33Speaker 3: We'll have to try that next summer.
- 3:34Speaker 4: Thinking to that second till yesterday's game, the second game
- 3:39Speaker 4: of the weekend again Vermont, you mentioned the penalty that
- 3:44Speaker 4: Viking had against him at the end of regulation. Toward
- 3:47Speaker 4: the end of regulation in house, from our vantage point,
- 3:51Speaker 4: we weren't really able to get a great look at
- 3:53Speaker 4: a second replay whatever it was. In real time, it
- 3:56Speaker 4: felt like maybe wrong place, wrong time, what was the set?
- 4:00Speaker 4: Was there something that he could have done to avoid?
- 4:02Speaker 4: What was, you know, a five minute major.
- 4:05Speaker 2: I think it was an unfortunate situation because we were
- 4:08Speaker 2: going up the ice and his momentum was taking him
- 4:11Speaker 2: up the ice, and the puck turned over and came back,
- 4:16Speaker 2: and as he was coming up, I think he was
- 4:18Speaker 2: trying to make a play on the puck, but it
- 4:20Speaker 2: changed direction, and it's just a it was the optics
- 4:24Speaker 2: of it. I think we're a lot worse than the
- 4:26Speaker 2: actual hit. Yeah, you know, I can't. Our referees do
- 4:31Speaker 2: a great job in our league, so I'm not gonna
- 4:35Speaker 2: They made a decision and they went and looked at it,
- 4:36Speaker 2: and I understand. I talked with the Commissioner of Officials today
- 4:39Speaker 2: and I understand their point of view. It was just
- 4:43Speaker 2: an unfortunate play. It wasn't malicious round tent. If there was,
- 4:48Speaker 2: he would have been suspended and he wasn't. So it
- 4:50Speaker 2: was just an unfortunate play and sometimes that happens, and
- 4:54Speaker 2: we were able to kill it and move on.
- 4:56Speaker 1: Mike, you're nine games in, you have four shorties as
- 4:59Speaker 1: a team, and two power play goals, which is which
- 5:02Speaker 1: is wild to think. But Tabor Heath slipping, I got
- 5:05Speaker 1: I think it was Adam that you brought this up.
- 5:06Speaker 1: It was John Spetzer jumped up in the play right
- 5:08Speaker 1: on the short handed goal. Yeah, that kind of put
- 5:11Speaker 1: the honest on the defenseman to worry about Spetsy and
- 5:14Speaker 1: let the goals or worry about Tabor he slipping.
- 5:16Speaker 3: That was a great shot.
- 5:18Speaker 2: Yeah. I Nick, Nick Perusi and Vince Stiletti work with
- 5:23Speaker 2: the penalty kill and I think they do a great
- 5:25Speaker 2: job articulating to our players what the plan is going
- 5:30Speaker 2: to be and where the trigger points are going to
- 5:33Speaker 2: be to create turnovers because a lot of times the
- 5:37Speaker 2: power play is standing still and if you can get
- 5:41Speaker 2: a turnover and you can catch them. And I think
- 5:44Speaker 2: they've really done a fine job of identifying a team's
- 5:50Speaker 2: weakness when it comes to trigger points, and we've been
- 5:53Speaker 2: able to exploit that and to our our advantage on
- 5:56Speaker 2: many occasions this season.
- 5:58Speaker 4: And so for Prusy coming in as someone who's new
- 6:01Speaker 4: to the staff, is that did it feel like the
- 6:05Speaker 4: players that are returning that are getting this message for
- 6:08Speaker 4: the first time? Was there like an awakening that like oh, okay,
- 6:11Speaker 4: this is even if it's a similar message just packaged differently.
- 6:15Speaker 4: Sometimes that's all it takes for guys to realize maybe
- 6:18Speaker 4: what you've been trying to preach all along.
- 6:20Speaker 2: I think that might be part of it. But it's
- 6:22Speaker 2: also maturity for them as players. Last year, Tabor and Jake,
- 6:29Speaker 2: it was their first year killing penalties really on a
- 6:31Speaker 2: consistent basis, So you just don't want to get scored on.
- 6:34Speaker 2: Now they have confidence of we know how to kill
- 6:37Speaker 2: a penalty. Let's take the next step. You know, probably
- 6:41Speaker 2: like a golfer who hits middle of the green all
- 6:44Speaker 2: the time just to keep it safe. Now, all of
- 6:46Speaker 2: a sudden, you get pretty confident and you can go,
- 6:49Speaker 2: you know, pin seeking. Yeah, that's not my game.
- 6:53Speaker 3: So if I'm pin seeking, it's by accident.
- 6:56Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 6:57Speaker 1: Mike John Spectra turn of the lineup this weekend, and
- 6:59Speaker 1: I thought he played pretty well. With the goal that
- 7:01Speaker 1: tied the game at two. I thought he made a
- 7:03Speaker 1: really good play for the right point. He took an
- 7:06Speaker 1: extra minute, kind of faked a slap shot, kind of
- 7:08Speaker 1: bite at his time, and just gat a nice saucer
- 7:11Speaker 1: pass towards the middle and it ended up with Ethan
- 7:14Speaker 1: scoring the second goal. I thought that was just a
- 7:16Speaker 1: really good intelligence play.
- 7:18Speaker 2: I thought that pass and was outstanding by John. And
- 7:23Speaker 2: there's probably not a player on our team that's more
- 7:26Speaker 2: prepared for a game than John Sprite. He watches more
- 7:30Speaker 2: film than any player I would imagine on our team.
- 7:34Speaker 2: And I also thought the play Jake Richard made for
- 7:38Speaker 2: our third goal was a really high end pass over
- 7:41Speaker 2: to Kate and Shahan for that power play goal. It
- 7:45Speaker 2: was a you know, everybody and even me thought he
- 7:48Speaker 2: was gonna shoot that bucket and he slides it across
- 7:51Speaker 2: in for an empty net goal. So he made the
- 7:53Speaker 2: extra pass, as they say, across the Royal Road, and
- 7:56Speaker 2: good things happen when you can complete those passes.
- 8:00Speaker 4: In overtime, when you know the game winning goal is developing.
- 8:04Speaker 4: It's such where you enter overtime. So the entire period
- 8:08Speaker 4: has played four on three because of the extra man,
- 8:11Speaker 4: So the penalty expires, it's still four on four hockey
- 8:14Speaker 4: at that point, back at even strength. So was there
- 8:18Speaker 4: something planned with the group to say, hey, you know,
- 8:21Speaker 4: this is what we're going to be looking for, or
- 8:23Speaker 4: was that just Tristan Trey Scott, Ryan Taddle just improvising
- 8:28Speaker 4: and just doing their thing.
- 8:29Speaker 2: Are you talking about on the winning goal?
- 8:31Speaker 4: Yeah, on the winning goal.
- 8:32Speaker 2: Now, we were just happy to kill a penalty and
- 8:35Speaker 2: get our guy back out there. Yeah, Trey made a
- 8:38Speaker 2: really nice play coming through the neutral zone, sucking in
- 8:42Speaker 2: their top defender and when he gave it to Tristan,
- 8:44Speaker 2: it gave him a pretty good gap between the defenseman
- 8:46Speaker 2: and Tristan. Did he You know? We work on that.
- 8:50Speaker 2: We have drills. We call it the Tampa six shot,
- 8:53Speaker 2: where you're shooting through sticks and coaches stand out there
- 8:58Speaker 2: and you got to shoot it through a stick or
- 9:00Speaker 2: try to shoot it by the leg because it's it's
- 9:03Speaker 2: a hard play for a goalie. And I think it
- 9:05Speaker 2: might have hit their defenseman scat bounced, I think, which
- 9:09Speaker 2: which made it a tough save.
- 9:10Speaker 1: Yeah, And it looked like he and were gonna criss cross,
- 9:13Speaker 1: and then Taddle instead went.
- 9:15Speaker 2: To the Yeah.
- 9:17Speaker 3: Yeah, that's a pretty goal. We'll take a break.
- 9:19Speaker 1: We'll come back with more of the Yukon Hockey Coaches
- 9:21Speaker 1: Show later time. Muslik and Ethan Gardila will join us
- 9:24Speaker 1: in interviews that I did earlier with them this afternoon.
- 9:27Speaker 1: This is the Yukon Hockey Coaches Show Bob Joyce sent
- 9:29Speaker 1: him Gardino, Mike Cavanaugh here from Bear Smoke Cows Barbecue
- 9:32Speaker 1: on Learfield
