- 0:02You know, normally I'm not a person to say the words I told
- 0:09you so, but I told you so and work as far as Saturday night
- 0:16was concerned, if you watch the game between Clemson versus LSU,
- 0:23everything that I've been saying leading up to that game pretty
- 0:28much validated and confirmed about two things.
- 0:37Well, it was really only A1 sided affair.
- 0:40But regardless, what essentially confirmed for me was that this
- 0:48season very well might be the end of Dabo swing and Clemson.
- 0:58The 41 point ass kick and they suffered from LSU on Saturday
- 1:04night was the worst loss in his nineteen seasons with the
- 1:10program. I mean, if you really watched
- 1:14the game, or at least part of it, I mean there was almost,
- 1:19it's almost laughable the way LSU worked in the way Clemson
- 1:26did. So I mean, that's how bad it
- 1:32was. Happy Labour Day everyone.
- 1:36I hope everyone is enjoying their three day weekend.
- 1:41But now I am going to talk about how after Saturday night's so
- 1:47lacking at the hands of LSU and potentially moving forward, why
- 1:54this season is more likely to be double swing's last with the
- 1:59Clemson Tigers. So last week I had talked about
- 2:05how Saturday night's season opener for Clemson and LSU was
- 2:11really going to tell the tale of how those two team seasons could
- 2:17potentially go as far as expectations.
- 2:22While there was no doubt that both Lane Kiffin and Dabble
- 2:26Sweeney had something to prove, it was really more so Dabble
- 2:30Sweeney that I took more of an interest than than Lane Kiffin.
- 2:36See, I pretty much knew Clemson was probably going to lose the
- 2:41game, but I thought at least before the game started because
- 2:45if you remember, there was about close to an over hour delay due
- 2:51to weather there. But I thought before it gave.
- 2:55Well, I think Clemson will lose, but I still think they're going
- 3:00to put up a competitive effort in spite of that.
- 3:05When kickoff finally came around, I was dead.
- 3:12Not only did Clemson prove that they didn't belong on the field
- 3:17on Saturday against LSU, it was like a contrast of the two
- 3:24teams. LSU looked like a team that was
- 3:32essentially more ready, more prepared and more focused
- 3:36despite, you know, the noise surrounding them and their head
- 3:41coach. While Clemson, on the other
- 3:44hand, they essentially look like AJV high school team.
- 3:52Now, that might be kind of being nice in all respect, but let's
- 3:57just be real honest. I mean, this game, it was pretty
- 4:00much over at halftime, and that's actually when I stopped
- 4:05watching it because when LSU was up by 4 touchdown, A4 touchdown
- 4:10margin, I essentially turned my attention to video games.
- 4:15I mean, that's how bad this game ended up being for them.
- 4:20And you know, I was just about to turn the channel and I just
- 4:25happened to have the game on. Then by the time halftime ended
- 4:28in the second-half was about to begin, I essentially saw a half
- 4:36Henry Stadium. Now mind you, LS U's Tiger
- 4:41Stadium is also nicknamed Death Bowie.
- 4:45At best only given night it could have balling standing room
- 4:50only at least 110,000 people. There was a round for what I
- 4:57read, 102 to 103 at the game on Saturday night, 103,000.
- 5:05By the time else you got uncomfortably, most of those
- 5:10fans left because they probably thought, you know, Clemson will
- 5:16put up a better fight. But by the time the second-half
- 5:19began, those LSU fans said, well, we appreciate the ass
- 5:24kicking you're giving Clemson, but we're going to go do
- 5:28something else. I mean, does that really say it
- 5:32all as to how that game went on Saturday?
- 5:37But to make Madison worse, as far as Clemson is concerned,
- 5:40like I said in the open, it just looked like they didn't even
- 5:44belong on the same field. And of course, there was no
- 5:48surprise when after the game was over, Dabble, Sweeney
- 5:53essentially said. And he didn't really shortcut
- 5:56it. We got a long way to go after
- 6:00this loss tonight. Oh, Clemson has a long way to
- 6:06go, all right. The crux of all this, however,
- 6:11is will there be you? Could head coach even be around
- 6:17for the long term? Look, it's no question that
- 6:25during Dabo's nineteen seasons with the program, he has
- 6:29established himself as one of the top tier coaches in college
- 6:33football. I mean, his 1% is around 77%.
- 6:38He has two national championships.
- 6:40He's been the four national tile games.
- 6:44But as I mentioned last week or about a couple weeks now, his
- 6:53reluctance to adapt to the modern times, to college
- 6:57football has really started to really come back to haunt him.
- 7:02See, I can like I said, respect why Dabo is up the old school
- 7:08mindset that you don't necessarily go reach in for the
- 7:13transfer portal that you build from recruitment homegrown
- 7:18talent and you hope to win from there.
- 7:22But again, it's not really so much of the fact that he hasn't
- 7:29really had the success the program as expected to last him
- 7:33four years. But you can also say in a way
- 7:37he's been kind of exposed as a coach.
- 7:41See the two names I have bought up recently that you can
- 7:44attribute Clemson's success over a decade prior, Chad Morris, who
- 7:50is back with the program as the offensive coordinator and Brent
- 7:55Bendable, who was the architect, you can say of those great
- 8:00Clemson defenses as a defensive coordinator.
- 8:04He's now with Oklahoma as the head coach.
- 8:06And if you watch them over the last couple years on their
- 8:10stewardship, he has gotten that program back to being kind of
- 8:14how like when Barry Schwitzer had those great Oklahoma teams
- 8:18of the 70s with those defenses. So you can kind of say in a way,
- 8:25Chad Morris and Brent Benables essentially made Dabble look
- 8:30good at times that I don't think people even realize.
- 8:34And while that is not to say Dabble isn't a great coach, I
- 8:38mean, the winning percentage in the championships obviously
- 8:43speak for themselves. So why hasn't he been willing to
- 8:52really get with the program as they say, as far as
- 8:55modernization of college sports, a lot of people attribute that
- 9:01to the reality that he's either too stubborn and not willing to
- 9:07actually want to adjust to where the game is today.
- 9:12Some say that he's forgotten how a coach that whatever had worked
- 9:19from in the past isn't working now and he needs to essentially
- 9:23find a different gear as far as coaching style or essentially be
- 9:30shown the door. But the thing I I think people
- 9:34haven't bought up is, and unfortunately I have to go here,
- 9:41it's that when he was at the top of his game, he had that
- 9:47success, You know, when he was in his 40s, OK, as far as his
- 9:51age, he's now in his mid 50s or to tearing to his late 30s.
- 10:01Usually you want to be able to change some things about
- 10:04yourself when you get to that point.
- 10:08But if you aren't willing to even do that, then that's more
- 10:13of an indictment that you've been too stuck in your ways for
- 10:18so long that while everything is changing around you, you haven't
- 10:23been willing to actually go along with.
- 10:28But look, as far as the parameters of this season for
- 10:32Clemson, I normally don't put much stock into, you know, just
- 10:39one game in football, college or professionally.
- 10:45And I certainly don't put stock if it's, you know, baseball,
- 10:50basketball, hockey over the first hand, four games of a team
- 10:54struggles first couple weeks. But here is why ultimately last
- 11:03this past size laws against LSU and in the manner which it
- 11:08happened has a century signed, sealed and delivered devil's
- 11:14faith with the probe. If you looked at Clemson's
- 11:18schedule, you look and you say, well, they could probably still
- 11:25win the conference 'cause if you remember a couple years prior,
- 11:30they had suffered a just kind of similar to sanity against LSU.
- 11:37They had gotten blown out against Georgia, but they were
- 11:41able to rally and end up winning the conference.
- 11:46I actually don't see that scenario happening,
- 11:49unfortunately. You look at their schedule and
- 11:54you will say, well, they have a fighting chance against North
- 11:57Carolina and Bill Belichick. I'm on the fence about that.
- 12:02I do not know how, and it's just just something the Nora boats
- 12:05are pointing out. Outside of North Carolina, I
- 12:10have little confidence they'll do well against Miami.
- 12:14Virginia Tech, keep your eye on that one 'cause I think that
- 12:18could be a sneaky good game. And the other game that I might
- 12:23have concerns about that is against Duke.
- 12:35Unfortunately for Dabo, that's where I think the problem lies,
- 12:39that he will never be able. He can't have this season go any
- 12:46worse because look, I said for at least two years that he
- 13:02should have been fired but or at least mutually, you know,
- 13:12mutually agree the part ways, blah blah blah.
- 13:16But here's what ultimately he doesn't get a pass for.
- 13:21What if he doesn't ultimately have another great season and
- 13:27everything goes once again underachieving wise and the
- 13:34program not only doesn't completely turn it around but
- 13:40ends up having another disappointing year?
- 13:45What will the athletic director and let's just say the Board of
- 13:52Governors within that program, the boosters and all that, what
- 13:56are they going to do if they end up suffering another
- 14:01disappointing year? Some decisions are going to have
- 14:04to be made and work. I can easily sit here and give
- 14:12a, you know, just my own thought about how if that would have
- 14:18happened, Dabbles really needed Clemson to just mutually part
- 14:21ways. Unfortunately, I actually don't
- 14:26see that part happening. And look, while there was no
- 14:31deny what Dabbles meant for the Clemson program, we can also
- 14:38acknowledge his many shortcomings the last couple
- 14:41years. Not only with his reluctance to
- 14:46not really modernize himself along with, you know, what's
- 14:51going on in college football, but it's the fact he hasn't been
- 14:54able to really understand. He's become his own worst enemy
- 15:00in more ways than one. Now, if you go back to last
- 15:05season, after Clemson had lost a game at home in which they
- 15:08really had no business losing, a Spartanburg, SC, reporter had
- 15:15kind of asked Dabble Swinger about, you know, was he worried
- 15:19about his job security or something along the lines of
- 15:23where do you think things have gone wrong?
- 15:26Dabble apparently did not take too kind to that, and he
- 15:32essentially teed off on the reporter.
- 15:34They even asked him. And it was more like, in a way,
- 15:39how dare you question my coaching acronym, my
- 15:43credentials, everything that I've built here since being
- 15:47hired over a decade ago, and yet you want to question me where
- 15:53everything has gone wrong? It was essentially him saying to
- 15:59that reporter he he was giving them the middle finger for even
- 16:04asking that. And if he stormed off after, I
- 16:07actually don't remember that part, although if he did, I
- 16:11would not blame. But, and here's why I will come
- 16:17to the defense of that report. Dabo, in all honesty, man, you
- 16:25handled that in the worst way you could.
- 16:29He was they were simply asking a question after what was, yes, a
- 16:35tough loss, but you going off and that said report was
- 16:41completely outlandish. And to me, that moment right
- 16:47there from last season essentially has to capsulate
- 16:51what has gone wrong with Clemson the last few years.
- 16:55It's been the man that Century acted like a petulant toddler
- 17:01and people are criticizing him because he hasn't been willing
- 17:05to modernize himself while the game has.
- 17:08And look, the last thing I'll say is as far as Sweeney is
- 17:14concerned, do I actually believe that Clemson would fire him?
- 17:21I mean, it would be hard for me to say they wouldn't
- 17:26considering, you know, what he has meant for that program.
- 17:31And then I believe it was Kevin Clark of ESPN that has said had
- 17:37they actually decided to go this route after the season, there's
- 17:41a huge buyout that probably will have to happen.
- 17:47But you know what, any like those things can be easily
- 17:52solved. I mean, just buy out the guy and
- 17:56go forward. But it is unquestionably clear.
- 18:00After signing nice slack against LSU, Clemson is in a dire
- 18:06situation of being just another college program.
- 18:12And unfortunately, whether or not Sweeney will admit it, he's
- 18:15at the forefront. His reluctance to really
- 18:19modernize himself, really do more, even with lesser talent,
- 18:25that part of it is his own doing and his unwillingness to look
- 18:31within himself and realize that I am the problem that I'm not
- 18:36admitting has ultimately led to this point.
- 18:39And who knows? Maybe Clemson can turn their
- 18:44hopefully season around if you're a Tigers fan, and maybe
- 18:48win the ACC and go on a deep playoff run.
- 18:50Who knows, but the the way last side this past side it showed,
- 18:56it showed clearly two things. That Clemson is nowhere near the
- 19:02same level of where they were from a decade ago and that that
- 19:07is an indication of how the rest of the season will be.
- 19:11Then it's time for Devil Swing to be shown the tour.
