- 0:01SPEAKER_00: Welcome to everyone's critics.
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: I'm your host, Yanis Cove, a formerly pretentious film school student.
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: Ten years later sees the error of his ways.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: Our guest today was a former head writer and performer for College Humor and a guest writer on Astronomy Club, Reka Shankar.
- 0:23SPEAKER_05: Thank you so much.
- 0:25SPEAKER_05: Happy to be here.
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: How are you doing today?
- 0:28SPEAKER_05: You know, I'm great.
- 0:29SPEAKER_05: I'm honestly waking up to rewatch a rom-com is a good way to start the day.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so you picked um uh Fools Rush In.
- 0:40SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: Because you said you said that you don't watch a lot of movies.
- 0:44SPEAKER_05: I I like truly do not watch very many movies at all.
- 0:48SPEAKER_05: If you if you name any movie, I probably have not seen it.
- 0:52SPEAKER_05: But when I was younger, because we never went to the movies as kids, um, so all the movies I saw were just on TV.
- 1:00SPEAKER_05: And if you're talking about a movie that was on TV, Fool's Russian was always on TV.
- 1:05SPEAKER_05: Whatever version of TBS existed in 1998 or whatever, it was constantly on.
- 1:12SPEAKER_05: And I I've seen this movie, God, it's this Mrs.
- 1:17SPEAKER_05: Doubtfire and Space Jam that I've probably seen the most in my life because we had Mrs.
- 1:21SPEAKER_05: Doubtfire on a VHS and uh and Space Jam on VHS, and this was always on.
- 1:26SPEAKER_05: So I've probably seen this movie like 25 times or something.
- 1:29SPEAKER_02: Whoa.
- 1:30SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:30SPEAKER_05: For someone who's never I've never seen Star Wars, and I just saw Indiana Jones over quarantine because I was like, I might as well.
- 1:37SPEAKER_05: Uh, and then I didn't know that I was accidentally watching the third one instead of the second one.
- 1:42SPEAKER_05: It's like, why does everyone say the second one's bad?
- 1:44SPEAKER_01: I liked it.
- 1:45SPEAKER_01: And like you watched the third one.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: Oh Why have you never seen why why have you not got round to watching anything then?
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: Is there a reason you just don't have interest in?
- 1:58SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I've always just been a TV person.
- 2:01SPEAKER_05: The idea of sitting down to watch a movie is sounds so boring to me because I'm I'm very like, if I like characters, I want to see their story over and over and over and over.
- 2:12SPEAKER_05: I want to see 3,000 permutations, even if they're all bad.
- 2:15SPEAKER_05: So, like, to me, the idea of watching 11 seasons of a sitcom over like through a a trilogy, I'm always gonna put 11 seasons of a sitcom.
- 2:26SPEAKER_05: Because I want to see if I like them enough, I want to see everything.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: Of course, yeah.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: Do you find that's affected like uh your pop culture knowledge or anything?
- 2:36SPEAKER_05: Absolutely.
- 2:37SPEAKER_05: I'm an improviser and a comedian, which is like white male mecca.
- 2:41SPEAKER_05: It's like every Star Wars reference.
- 2:44SPEAKER_05: I don't under I have to call I wrote for this uh college humor show called Troopers, uh, which was uh I don't know, what the fuck is it called?
- 2:53SPEAKER_01: Oh my god, what the fuck is it called?
- 2:55SPEAKER_01: Uh yeah, that's what it's called, right?
- 2:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: I I don't know which one you're talking about.
- 2:59SPEAKER_01: What am I talking about?
- 3:00SPEAKER_01: Why don't I remember the show I wrote for?
- 3:02SPEAKER_01: Uh uh uh yeah, it's called Troopers.
- 3:05SPEAKER_05: What the fuck?
- 3:05SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 3:07SPEAKER_05: Wow.
- 3:08SPEAKER_05: This shows how much I care.
- 3:09SPEAKER_05: Uh so but it was it was a Star Wars like stormtroopers show.
- 3:13SPEAKER_02: Like, oh right.
- 3:14SPEAKER_05: What do the minions in Star Wars do get up to?
- 3:18SPEAKER_05: I don't, I don't have no idea.
- 3:19SPEAKER_05: I have no context for that.
- 3:21SPEAKER_05: And I I legitimately tried to watch Star Wars to like help.
- 3:25SPEAKER_05: It just was so boring to me.
- 3:28SPEAKER_05: And and I just couldn't do it, but I still wrote for this show.
- 3:31SPEAKER_05: Uh uh and so it definitely hinders me.
- 3:33SPEAKER_05: I don't, it's not something I boast about.
- 3:35SPEAKER_05: Like, I had never seen anything.
- 3:37SPEAKER_05: I I it's more a weakness that I I would rather watch a TV show that tells me what Star Wars is than watched Star Wars for whatever reason.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: Have you seen the Star Wars TV show that's all out at the moment?
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: The Mandalorian.
- 3:50SPEAKER_05: So Mandalorian, I watched a couple episodes of because Baby Yoda looked really cute.
- 3:55SPEAKER_05: Of course, yeah.
- 3:56SPEAKER_05: And I had to see, I had to see the child.
- 3:58SPEAKER_05: Uh, but I haven't seen the full thing because ultimately also like sci-fi sagas are not super interesting to me.
- 4:05SPEAKER_05: Uh, I am much more into like uh very interpersonal, like I like like a rom-com, I love like a friendship story, love stories about like sad women, um that kind of thing.
- 4:19SPEAKER_05: And and Star Wars is a little too like even Lord of the Rings.
- 4:23SPEAKER_05: I liked the movies, but I wouldn't go back and re-watch them.
- 4:26SPEAKER_05: Um, it's a little too fantasy for me, or or whatever genre.
- 4:31SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's all fantasy.
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: Like that's that's the big those are always the big movies, anyways.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: Always fantasy movies and sci-fi, and yeah.
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: So I get why you haven't seen a lot of those then as well.
- 4:43SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 4:44SPEAKER_05: Because I it it it it is sort of a a genre that is uh it is typified by like big mythology, big like sagas, and I'm just not into any of that.
- 4:58SPEAKER_05: So yeah.
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: You must have like nothing to talk to Brennan about then.
- 5:03SPEAKER_05: It is funny, Brennan and I do not really overlap on a lot of uh pop culture, but that's why DD was so interesting because the DD was always explained to me pretty poorly, and so I was like, oh, that's not for me, I'm not a fantasy nerd.
- 5:17SPEAKER_05: But Brennan, you know, is obviously this great hybrid of a comedian and a and a DD person.
- 5:22SPEAKER_05: So he was like, Ray guys, just improv.
- 5:24SPEAKER_05: He's like, oh, I've been doing improv forever.
- 5:27SPEAKER_05: I can do that.
- 5:28SPEAKER_05: And so, like, obviously, my character is probably the least uh mythology-based in that show uh in D20.
- 5:35SPEAKER_05: Uh uh, and it's all based that whole season was based on Lord of the Rings, the season I was on.
- 5:40SPEAKER_05: So I knew the basic story, but like my character is not from Lord of the Rings.
- 5:44SPEAKER_05: My character is an invented character for a reason.
- 5:45SPEAKER_05: So I was like, uh, I can be the girlfriend of Sauron.
- 5:49SPEAKER_05: I can't be anything that's like canon to this because I don't know, I don't remember, and I'm not gonna rewatch these movies.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but I think also like you don't want to be some canon character within that anyway.
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: Like it's not it's like you don't want to be replicating all that the that history and everything.
- 6:04SPEAKER_05: Totally.
- 6:04SPEAKER_05: So sometimes it can be an advantage.
- 6:06SPEAKER_05: Like in even in Troopers, when we were coming up with characters, they're all they're coming up with a lot of like Star Wars staples.
- 6:11SPEAKER_05: And I know the basics, but I I I pitched trashy as a character, which is like a trash can robot.
- 6:18SPEAKER_05: Uh, because I was like, well, R2 D2, I don't really know what his function is, but like there could be this like trash can robot uprising kind of thing.
- 6:26SPEAKER_05: Spoiler.
- 6:27SPEAKER_05: Uh uh, and I do think you can use your stupidity as a strength.
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: Well, it's it's all that plays on the top of your intelligence, isn't it?
- 6:35SPEAKER_05: Yes, exactly.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: So, yeah, so this movie itself, it's just like a it's a very typical rom com.
- 6:43SPEAKER_00: Yes, it's it's it plays all the tropes of a rom-com.
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: So it's just it's uh these two people meet, they have a one-night stand, turns out she's pregnant, yeah, and then hilarity ensues.
- 6:59SPEAKER_05: Hilarity ensues, and it it they're actually like soulmates, right?
- 7:02SPEAKER_05: They're like it wasn't just a a one-night stand, it was like it was meant to be.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 7:08SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 7:09SPEAKER_00: So it's I what I thought about this when I first I'd literally just watched this like right before the book.
- 7:15SPEAKER_00: Oh fun, yeah.
- 7:16SPEAKER_00: And uh I was thinking to myself, I was like, oh, knocked off, knocked up ripped this off.
- 7:22SPEAKER_02: Thank you.
- 7:23SPEAKER_00: It's very similar to knocked up.
- 7:24SPEAKER_05: Thank you.
- 7:25SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 7:26SPEAKER_05: Because okay, so part of what was funny about like when you told me the concept of the podcast and I was looking up movies, so I didn't even think to look this one up because one, I haven't just like thought about it in a while.
- 7:38SPEAKER_05: And then two, it didn't strike me that this is any worse than any other like 90s rom-com.
- 7:45SPEAKER_05: So when I when I saw that it had such a bad rating, I was like, what the fuck?
- 7:49SPEAKER_05: Why does this of all things have such a bad rating?
- 7:52SPEAKER_05: Like, I've I saw While You Were Sleeping recently, I was like, that was one of the stupidest movies I've ever seen.
- 7:58SPEAKER_00: And I'm like people love that movie.
- 8:00SPEAKER_05: People love that movie.
- 8:01SPEAKER_05: I'm like, nobody talks about this movie, and not in a way where I'm like, why aren't you talking about it?
- 8:05SPEAKER_05: But I'm like, yeah, I guess because it's an average rom-com, but certainly you should not hate it unless you hate all rom-coms.
- 8:13SPEAKER_05: Uh so that really surprised me and it made me want to defend it.
- 8:17SPEAKER_05: And like, yeah, to your point, I'm like, yeah, knocked up is the same concept.
- 8:20SPEAKER_05: There's more like goofy comedic actors in it.
- 8:24SPEAKER_05: Uh, but like Matthew Perry is a Seth Rogan of his of the 90s.
- 8:30SPEAKER_00: I mean, he's one of the one of the things about him is this like, why is every woman so in love with this man in this movie?
- 8:38SPEAKER_00: And you think the same thing as Seth Rogan in Locked Up?
- 8:41SPEAKER_05: Yes, he is sort of a like because in the 90s, like I was, I was, I'll say, uh uh caught up in the Matthew Perry sandstorm of like so attracted to him on friends, so unaware of his extremely explicit homophobia as an as a seven-year-old girl.
- 9:00SPEAKER_05: Uh, I now I look back, I'm like, I see it for being like a little kid.
- 9:06SPEAKER_05: I'm not really like attracted to him when I watch this now.
- 9:10SPEAKER_05: Uh, I am attracted to my nostalgia of it.
- 9:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 9:14SPEAKER_05: And so I get it.
- 9:15SPEAKER_05: Uh uh, he is also like a funny leading man.
- 9:19SPEAKER_05: He is just being Chandler Bing with 98% of the homophobia removed, but there's still some of it there.
- 9:26SPEAKER_00: There's some of it there.
- 9:27SPEAKER_05: They simply must.
- 9:29SPEAKER_05: Uh, and that is honestly, when you watch Friends, it's just like egregious.
- 9:32SPEAKER_00: And it's so much.
- 9:34SPEAKER_05: I cannot rewatch it.
- 9:35SPEAKER_05: It is so disgusting uh to rewatch.
- 9:39SPEAKER_05: But with this, I'm like, okay, you get the perks of Chandler Bang, which is like your sarcastic, weird boyfriend, uh, with uh 98% of that.
- 9:49SPEAKER_05: Uh uh, so it's still bad.
- 9:50SPEAKER_00: But um But it includes more like racism in this.
- 9:54SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah, it's interesting because so far a while also defend this movie.
- 10:00SPEAKER_05: I don't know if I'm jumping the gun here.
- 10:01SPEAKER_00: No, it's fine, go for it.
- 10:03SPEAKER_05: Uh uh, so I had never seen a movie with a brown woman lead.
- 10:09SPEAKER_05: And as a young, like Indian girl, firstly, I don't know if this is gonna track with all the women of color listeners, but like any person of color, any woman of color was me.
- 10:19SPEAKER_05: It did not matter what her race was, if she looked like me, it simply did not matter.
- 10:23SPEAKER_05: Angela of Women's World, that was me.
- 10:26SPEAKER_05: Uh, any any Chinese woman, and oh, that's me.
- 10:28SPEAKER_05: Oh, yes, oh, a Latin uh Latinx woman, that's me too.
- 10:32SPEAKER_05: Oh, okay.
- 10:33SPEAKER_05: Any any person that was tan, that was me.
- 10:36SPEAKER_05: Anyone with black hair or brown eyes, that was me.
- 10:38SPEAKER_05: And so, like, you're you're starving at this point.
- 10:41SPEAKER_05: You don't even realize it.
- 10:43SPEAKER_05: This movie coming on TV is like, wait, who is Salma Hayek?
- 10:47SPEAKER_05: I I am her.
- 10:48SPEAKER_05: It's so crazy, I didn't realize that I am her.
- 10:51SPEAKER_05: Uh and so when I watched this movie, it was just like, it was like my eyes were glued to the screen anytime this movie was on, which was constantly.
- 11:01SPEAKER_05: Uh, because I had just never seen, I was like, wow, he desires her so strongly.
- 11:06SPEAKER_05: And now I realize I'm like, oh yeah, Salma Hayek's fucking hot.
- 11:10SPEAKER_00: Like, but of course he desires her.
- 11:12SPEAKER_05: Yeah, they picked like the hottest woman on earth.
- 11:15SPEAKER_05: But at the time, I'm just like, who is this unknown actress?
- 11:18SPEAKER_05: Because I'm like little and I don't know who she is.
- 11:21SPEAKER_05: Uh uh, and it was like, whoa, she is being desired, she's being chased by somebody who is considered a mainstream, like funny leading man.
- 11:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 11:32SPEAKER_05: This movie, I mean, I was I was sold.
- 11:34SPEAKER_05: This movie could have been absolute dog shit for two hours and I would have watched it.
- 11:39SPEAKER_04: I was just like, I'm here for the ride, man.
- 11:42SPEAKER_04: They could they could murder each other at the end.
- 11:44SPEAKER_04: I don't care, I'll watch this.
- 11:47SPEAKER_00: So I my my experience with it was like I'd never seen it, but I remember like for the longest, longest time, anytime I would go to like Blockbuster or anything, it would just always be there, just always up front.
- 12:01SPEAKER_00: It was always there.
- 12:02SPEAKER_00: So like the I I remember the poster, I remember the video, like the the cover of the VHS tape.
- 12:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 12:08SPEAKER_00: So much about it, knew nothing about the plot.
- 12:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 12:11SPEAKER_00: I thought, oh, it's just a typical rom com.
- 12:14SPEAKER_00: I'm a teenage boy, I have no interest in this.
- 12:16SPEAKER_02: Yes, yes.
- 12:17SPEAKER_00: Now, now I like I like rom coms.
- 12:20SPEAKER_00: I had no issue watching it.
- 12:22SPEAKER_00: Like, it's a perfectly fine movie.
- 12:25SPEAKER_00: I don't think it deserves the low rating it has.
- 12:29SPEAKER_01: I agree, yeah.
- 12:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it just it's I don't know.
- 12:34SPEAKER_00: I wonder if it's like I wonder if it it's a fact of like rom coms getting reviewed lower than they should be because they're rom coms.
- 12:44SPEAKER_05: Yes, I think people judge the formulaicness, but actually, I'm gonna look.
- 12:49SPEAKER_05: Like, you've got mail or something, right?
- 12:51SPEAKER_05: It's like a really typical rom-com that came out at around the same time, like 1998.
- 12:56SPEAKER_05: I bet you it's not rated as poorly.
- 12:58SPEAKER_05: I bet it's a pretty I bet that's higher.
- 13:00SPEAKER_05: It's a 69% tomato meter and a 73% audience score.
- 13:06SPEAKER_05: And like that's like a pretty like pristine up there rom-com.
- 13:11SPEAKER_05: So I'm not saying this is as good as it, but I do it's yeah, right.
- 13:16SPEAKER_05: They're all like it's all the same basic thing.
- 13:18SPEAKER_05: It's fine.
- 13:19SPEAKER_05: The thing is, you've got mail that's fucked up.
- 13:21SPEAKER_05: I know I'm not talking about another movie.
- 13:23SPEAKER_05: I used to watch that on a plane.
- 13:25SPEAKER_05: By the way, I see all movies either on TV or on plane.
- 13:28SPEAKER_05: This is also I just, I just, I've seen if almost any movie you ask me, I probably have seen it on a plane.
- 13:35SPEAKER_05: Um, and uh uh you've got mail.
- 13:37SPEAKER_05: This is not a new opinion, but when you re-watch that, you're like, oh my god, he lies to her for so much of this movie.
- 13:47SPEAKER_05: And she still ends up liking him.
- 13:50SPEAKER_05: And that makes no sense to me re-watching it now, and in that that kind of allure of the movie is taken away.
- 13:57SPEAKER_05: It's still a cute movie that is very like uh sort of uh delightfully dated in its AOL kind of motif.
- 14:05SPEAKER_05: But like this, at least I'm like, they had a rapport, they didn't fucking hate each other.
- 14:10SPEAKER_05: There's not that trip of like two people who hated each other that end up together, they like get flirty, they have a one-night stand, they don't hate each other, there's just a cultural difference, and that I also related to like going to uh Isabel, her the main it's almost character's name, uh, her house.
- 14:27SPEAKER_05: There's like eight million people there.
- 14:28SPEAKER_05: I'm like, yes, if you go to a party at my house.
- 14:31SPEAKER_05: I I did like question, and I don't know Mexican culture super well.
- 14:34SPEAKER_05: It's like, would they have like a mariachi band at just like a casual family dinner?
- 14:39SPEAKER_05: That seems incorrect, but who am I to say?
- 14:43SPEAKER_00: Um I highly doubt that it's accurate.
- 14:46SPEAKER_05: I I want to venture to say, and anyone please at me about this.
- 14:51SPEAKER_05: Uh I I want to venture to say that is a a white ism in the script.
- 14:56SPEAKER_05: Uh, but like I did relate to the like when Matthew Perry is like, this is your family, and she's like, Yeah, some of them couldn't make it because there's like two million people at this party.
- 15:05SPEAKER_05: I was like, oh yeah, there's like 80 billion people at every family gathering, and everyone is related to you.
- 15:11SPEAKER_05: And I know that when I've explained to my friends or like a partner, like this auntie and this auntie and this auntie and this auntie, they're like, okay, uh.
- 15:19SPEAKER_05: And even just seeing Matthew Perry willing to try, I was like, that's hot.
- 15:23SPEAKER_05: That's hot.
- 15:24SPEAKER_05: I like that.
- 15:24SPEAKER_05: This movie rolls.
- 15:25SPEAKER_04: I've even just this morning rewatching, I was like, yeah, that's still hot.
- 15:28SPEAKER_04: Okay, this tracks, yeah, okay.
- 15:30SPEAKER_05: 22 years ago, I kind of had it, I had the right idea.
- 15:33SPEAKER_05: This good, this good.
- 15:35SPEAKER_05: Him eating Mexican food and not like the typical like shit people, oh, this is spicy, or spicy food, yeah.
- 15:43SPEAKER_05: Yeah, like, or like with Indian food, it's always like, I'm gonna fucking shit myself or whatever.
- 15:47SPEAKER_05: I'm like, God.
- 15:48SPEAKER_00: I'm so glad there were no jokes about that.
- 15:50SPEAKER_05: I'm so glad because friends did that all the time.
- 15:53SPEAKER_05: There's like a fucking, what are we feeding this baby?
- 15:55SPEAKER_05: Indian food?
- 15:55SPEAKER_05: Like, shut the fuck up, Rachel.
- 15:57SPEAKER_05: Uh and and and with this, at least I was like, good.
- 16:02SPEAKER_05: There are so many like big uh landmines that people were using and willingly stepping on in 1997.
- 16:10SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 16:10SPEAKER_05: Uh uh uh in terms of like comedies with any person of color in it, comedies with any woman in it, whatever.
- 16:18SPEAKER_05: And this surprised me at its minimalism and racism and sexism.
- 16:26SPEAKER_00: It's so minimal for 97, you're right.
- 16:28SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 16:29SPEAKER_00: But it's there's still stuff.
- 16:31SPEAKER_05: Yes, yes, exactly.
- 16:32SPEAKER_05: And and there is still, but even the scene where like uh Matthew Perry's parents and Salma Hayek's parents meet, you do expect, I expected a lot more like, whoa, what's this Mexican guy doing?
- 16:46SPEAKER_05: Kind of things of like weird misunderstandings, but I do kind of like that they made both the dads agree that, yeah, you kids are stupid, and the moms be like, I don't know, I kind of get it.
- 16:56SPEAKER_05: And I was like, Yeah, okay, you see, okay, cool.
- 17:00SPEAKER_05: I I don't know.
- 17:01SPEAKER_05: They were just again, maybe it's giving like too many cookies to this movie, but but they kind of play his parents off as the joke as well.
- 17:07SPEAKER_05: Yes, which is nice, which is nice because his parents come and they immediately are like, Oh, she's the help, which is like rude and offensive, and you're like, Okay, but it does they come off as like assholes about it, not like it's funny that they think that uh at least in just kind of briefly watching it this morning.
- 17:27SPEAKER_05: Uh uh, so I appreciated that, and like again, like you know, sometimes you look back at a movie you liked in 1997, you're like, oh fuck, like when I rewatched Friends, you're like, absolutely not.
- 17:38SPEAKER_05: I cannot, but I watched that because I was like, nah, this tracks, this movie tracks.
- 17:46SPEAKER_00: So when did you uh can you remember when you first watched it?
- 17:50SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I believe I watched this probably the first time it started syndicating on TV.
- 17:55SPEAKER_05: So I would say 1998, because I think it came out in 97.
- 17:59SPEAKER_00: Um so you were like a young kid then.
- 18:01SPEAKER_05: Yes, I was like eight or seven years old.
- 18:04SPEAKER_05: Uh and so that's prime time to be like absolutely like any representation that hits that comes out, that's the age to suck to suck a young person in.
- 18:15SPEAKER_05: It's like, yeah, wow, you've got me.
- 18:17SPEAKER_05: I'm I'm gonna give, hey, I hope we're a Nelson house.
- 18:20SPEAKER_05: I'm giving you every watch on this movie.
- 18:25SPEAKER_00: Can you believe mine was Aladdin?
- 18:28SPEAKER_05: Oh my god, are you kidding me?
- 18:32SPEAKER_05: With Aladdin.
- 18:34SPEAKER_05: I watched again, my criteria is very low.
- 18:37SPEAKER_05: Does she have black hair?
- 18:38SPEAKER_05: She's me.
- 18:39SPEAKER_05: I was like, wow, I'm Jasmine.
- 18:41SPEAKER_05: She is quite thinner than me, and that did make me feel strange.
- 18:44SPEAKER_05: I was like, wow, Jasmine's so tiny.
- 18:47SPEAKER_05: I was like, wow, she is so hot, and Aladdin is so hot, and they are both so hot and they desire each other.
- 18:54SPEAKER_05: Wow, incredible.
- 18:58SPEAKER_04: They are Indian.
- 19:00SPEAKER_00: That's all yeah, they they're not they're not even Indian, but I'm just like, nope, they're Indian.
- 19:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah, because that's why I'm exactly.
- 19:07SPEAKER_05: I it it would you the anybody is anybody, Angela.
- 19:10SPEAKER_05: Wow, she is Indian.
- 19:11SPEAKER_05: I cannot believe it's just you're so starved for it.
- 19:14SPEAKER_05: And as a kid, it's like literally any.
- 19:16SPEAKER_05: I mean, like, I think that's why I gravitated a lot towards movies that also had animals in them.
- 19:20SPEAKER_05: Because I'm like, they could be anybody.
- 19:22SPEAKER_05: Fox and the hound.
- 19:24SPEAKER_05: The fox and the hound are both Indian.
- 19:26SPEAKER_05: Amazing.
- 19:27SPEAKER_05: Uh like I watched Arthur a lot, even into adulthood.
- 19:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 19:30SPEAKER_05: Because anybody is anybody, you know.
- 19:32SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 19:33SPEAKER_00: Uh makes so much sense looking back on that.
- 19:35SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 19:36SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 19:36SPEAKER_05: Any animal, I'm like, oh wow, person of color, anybody, Doug, you know, they at least everyone was a different color.
- 19:44SPEAKER_05: You have your everyone's like, Skeeter is black, whatever.
- 19:47SPEAKER_05: But I was also like, Skeeter's me.
- 19:49SPEAKER_05: What do you mean?
- 19:51SPEAKER_04: He's blue, yes.
- 19:52SPEAKER_00: He's blue, he's gotta be he's gotta be Indian.
- 19:56SPEAKER_00: He's be proud.
- 19:57SPEAKER_05: Yes, exactly.
- 19:59SPEAKER_05: And so that stuff in kids shows in in PG13 movies that kids can watch and stuff is so it it really affects you.
- 20:09SPEAKER_00: I'm literally trying to think back of like what like all I can think of is Aladdin and then like everything, like like you said, anything like to do with like an animal that you're just like placing.
- 20:19SPEAKER_05: Oh my god.
- 20:20SPEAKER_05: The movies that my my parents did not buy us movies, we did not go to the movies, but like my uncle gave me Space Jam for my birthday, which was like it's not a rom-com, but I was like, I literally, oh my god, my because kids used to make fun of my name all the time.
- 20:34SPEAKER_05: And so I I remember I asked my mom, I was like, Can I change my name to Lola?
- 20:38SPEAKER_05: Because I was like, she is this she is a woman, she is good at basketball, she is tan, like yes, for Lola Buddy.
- 20:48SPEAKER_05: Um my uncle also got me off-brand Pocahontas.
- 20:52SPEAKER_05: It was not the Disney one, it was some like really weird one.
- 20:56SPEAKER_05: Off-brand, like whatever.
- 20:58SPEAKER_05: And I was like, yes, Pocahontas is also me, but her story was like like way sadder, so I like did not re-watch that movie a lot.
- 21:06SPEAKER_05: But like this seems, and John Smith is also like not a desirable lead.
- 21:12SPEAKER_05: Whereas like Aladdin or someone is like, oh, everybody wants a piece of Aladdin for sure.
- 21:16SPEAKER_05: Um uh uh I'm trying to think of the other movies we had that like Fox and the Hound, we had we had uh Robin Hood.
- 21:23SPEAKER_05: Robin Hood is hot.
- 21:24SPEAKER_05: We did not have Robin Hood.
- 21:26SPEAKER_00: Everyone says it's hot.
- 21:27SPEAKER_05: He's so hot.
- 21:28SPEAKER_05: He's hot for it's weird because Fox and the Hound, it's a different type of fox because that's a realistic fox and not like an anthropomorphized fox.
- 21:38SPEAKER_05: Both are hot.
- 21:39SPEAKER_05: Uh both are very hot.
- 21:42SPEAKER_05: Um try to think of other, like, yeah, movies that I watched all the time.
- 21:47SPEAKER_05: I mean, God.
- 21:48SPEAKER_00: I watch Space Jam a lot.
- 21:49SPEAKER_00: I remember that.
- 21:50SPEAKER_00: Oh god.
- 21:51SPEAKER_05: I watch that like every day after school.
- 21:53SPEAKER_05: It's obsessive, and there's like one woman in it, and you're like, yes, diversity, and she has to.
- 22:00SPEAKER_05: To be like a sex kitten rabbit.
- 22:02SPEAKER_05: Um yeah, I'm trying to think it really was a lot of animals.
- 22:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah, well, I think we're like both about the same age and both like desperate, like yes, they're so desperate for diversity on screen that it's it's like we both had the same references, I think.
- 22:18SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it's it's crazy.
- 22:19SPEAKER_05: Like I watched children's TV well into adulthood, I think for the same reasons.
- 22:24SPEAKER_05: Like even like Nick Jr.
- 22:27SPEAKER_05: and stuff, I would watch like like because like Gulla Gullah Island was like an all-black family.
- 22:33SPEAKER_05: Uh like the busy world of Richard Scary.
- 22:35SPEAKER_05: I'm like, they're all cats or bears or whatever, so they're all me.
- 22:39SPEAKER_05: Uh uh, I'm trying to think about it.
- 22:41SPEAKER_05: Dorothy Explorer, I remember my brother being like, this is how low the bar is.
- 22:45SPEAKER_05: My brother's like, she looks like you.
- 22:46SPEAKER_05: I was like, Yeah.
- 22:47SPEAKER_05: I'm like, I was like, that show came out in like 2000.
- 22:50SPEAKER_05: I was like 10 or whatever.
- 22:52SPEAKER_05: I'm like, that's just not for me, but I was like, I'll watch this.
- 22:54SPEAKER_05: Okay, cool.
- 22:55SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah, she looks like me.
- 22:56SPEAKER_05: Oh my god, cool.
- 22:57SPEAKER_05: And I could learn a little Spanish.
- 22:59SPEAKER_05: Cool.
- 23:03SPEAKER_05: So sad.
- 23:06SPEAKER_00: What area did you grow up in?
- 23:07SPEAKER_05: Um, I'm from the Philly suburbs, but I'm I was born in Connecticut, so I lived there for like nine or ten years, and then we moved to the Philly suburbs.
- 23:15SPEAKER_05: It's all pretty like white northeastern areas.
- 23:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Connecticut, especially.
- 23:20SPEAKER_05: My god, I was like one of three Indian people I had ever seen in my school.
- 23:26SPEAKER_05: Uh and the other Indian girl, I like so badly wanted to be her friend or be her.
- 23:32SPEAKER_05: I couldn't tell.
- 23:33SPEAKER_05: It's like very demented.
- 23:34SPEAKER_05: What growing up being like one of the only people is like you have no like reflection back of you, so it's very uh bizarre.
- 23:43SPEAKER_00: I had the um I had the reverse experience of like I grew up up into the age of 10, I was uh like a very mixed school to ever like everyone there.
- 23:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 23:54SPEAKER_00: Then I moved to uh an all-white suburb, and I was like the I was like the one that's like stood out there, like no there was one Indian kid other than me.
- 24:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 24:04SPEAKER_00: And so from like the age of 10 to 18, it was just that.
- 24:09SPEAKER_05: Wow.
- 24:09SPEAKER_00: I was like, oh, this is so fun going through my teenage years, experiencing this.
- 24:14SPEAKER_05: Yes, it's truly a nightmare.
- 24:17SPEAKER_05: It's just like, oh god, I remember when the first Indian g woman or girl, whatever, we were like 12, moved into my high school that wasn't me.
- 24:27SPEAKER_05: And for for whatever reason, I I have a guess, I was assigned to like tour her around the school.
- 24:35SPEAKER_05: Who's to say why?
- 24:36SPEAKER_05: I have no clue.
- 24:38SPEAKER_05: But I didn't realize she was like the hot kind of Indian girl.
- 24:42SPEAKER_04: So she immediately became popular.
- 24:44SPEAKER_05: And I was like, oh and she because she has like hazel eyes and she's like really hot.
- 24:50SPEAKER_05: I was like, oh, I see.
- 24:54SPEAKER_05: There's an intersectionality to being a woman of color too.
- 24:58SPEAKER_05: That's also like if you are hot, there's like that's a really interesting intersection.
- 25:02SPEAKER_05: We don't talk about being really hot and also being virginalized.
- 25:08SPEAKER_00: But I think there's like like that's interesting because I think there's also that to this movie.
- 25:11SPEAKER_00: Is this like they bring it, yeah.
- 25:13SPEAKER_05: The hottest woman on earth.
- 25:15SPEAKER_05: Like, and again, as a seven-year-old, I didn't realize like that's Salma Hayek.
- 25:19SPEAKER_05: And now I'm like, yeah.
- 25:22SPEAKER_05: Salma Hayek is doing, yeah, of course, of course.
- 25:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but it's like the hottest, one of the hottest women in the world.
- 25:33SPEAKER_00: With with Matthew Perry! Matthew Perry, like the most bland white guy in the world.
- 25:40SPEAKER_05: It's it is.
- 25:42SPEAKER_05: It's funny because this movie has a nostalgic pull to me, I don't look at it and go like, Matthew Perry, the same way you might like you look at like any classic, like shlubby dude and hot fucking woman combo movie that we see nowadays.
- 25:59SPEAKER_05: Uh, I don't look at it the same way, but I totally understand that that is what it is.
- 26:04SPEAKER_05: I will say, like, he at least has a job, and uh what what a low bar.
- 26:09SPEAKER_05: He has a job and is not like some immense fuck up who has like no, like she doesn't like fix him really in the same way that I feel like sometimes they do in night days.
- 26:22SPEAKER_05: She, I guess, makes him have more feelings, but even in the beginning, like I I guess so.
- 26:28SPEAKER_05: One line that surprised me when they have their one night stand, Selma Hayek's like, I've never done anything like that before.
- 26:34SPEAKER_05: He's like, me either.
- 26:35SPEAKER_05: Like, yeah, Matthew Perry is not supposed to be this scumbag guy that sleeps around all the time and she's the one.
- 26:42SPEAKER_05: He's just some guy that like it seems like he just doesn't date or doesn't care.
- 26:46SPEAKER_05: Even like any woman that's hit on him in the movie, he hides from.
- 26:49SPEAKER_00: Um, he seems to like have no interest in any woman except for some hype.
- 26:53SPEAKER_05: Exactly.
- 26:53SPEAKER_05: When which I'm like, okay, super hot.
- 26:55SPEAKER_05: Okay, he has no interest in anyone except the brown protagonist, very hot.
- 27:00SPEAKER_05: And uh also, like, okay, he's not that typical like shithead male protagonist that's like, this is the one woman that tames him.
- 27:09SPEAKER_05: He's just kind of a milk test dude that works a nine to five, that's like in town to make the building or whatever.
- 27:16SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it's not entirely clear.
- 27:17SPEAKER_00: Like, he does some, he does some some kind of building with nightclubs, and that's what he builds like nightclubs for a living.
- 27:25SPEAKER_05: And and yet he doesn't want to live in Vegas.
- 27:28SPEAKER_05: He's from Manhattan.
- 27:30SPEAKER_05: They are that's also a funny trope of like movies at this time because like I live in Manhattan.
- 27:35SPEAKER_05: I'm like, nobody who lives in Manhattan says, like, I live in Manhattan, they've got any live in New York, but whatever.
- 27:41SPEAKER_05: Uh uh.
- 27:44SPEAKER_00: One thing is when it opens, it opens with Christmas in New York, and I'm like, yes, I'm in.
- 27:49SPEAKER_00: I love this trope in movies.
- 27:52SPEAKER_00: This is like the height of a rom-com for me at Christmas.
- 27:55SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 27:56SPEAKER_05: But then it has nothing, it has no bearing on any.
- 28:01SPEAKER_05: It almost feels like they're playing a trick on you of like, we get you in by saying it's Christmas in New York, but then 99% of this movie takes place in Las Vegas during not the holidays.
- 28:11SPEAKER_00: During all very constantly like January in Vegas.
- 28:15SPEAKER_05: Which is very yeah, they keep talking about the holidays.
- 28:18SPEAKER_00: Oh no, I don't want this.
- 28:19SPEAKER_05: I think they tricked us.
- 28:20SPEAKER_05: I want to think that that was like a funny subversion, like, haha, bitches.
- 28:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but it instantly puts me off it.
- 28:27SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 28:29SPEAKER_05: But it is a very unusual, cool setting, like the Southwest and Mexico for this movie, which again, I dig.
- 28:37SPEAKER_05: It's not some New York running through the streets to the Empire State Building.
- 28:42SPEAKER_00: It's like Oh, I'm all about that though.
- 28:44SPEAKER_05: I it it that stuff is fun, but I will say, like, anytime, okay, the Mindy Project has all of its flaws in the world, and they make Danny the most egregious fucking shithead by like season four.
- 28:56SPEAKER_05: I don't know if you've ever seen the show.
- 28:57SPEAKER_00: I've seen some of it.
- 28:58SPEAKER_05: Okay, so like Danny becomes this like love interest, and there it is a spoiler.
- 29:03SPEAKER_05: Uh, but there is an episode where Danny flies to India to meet her parents, and I'm like, I took pictures of it.
- 29:13SPEAKER_05: I watched this show for the first time last year.
- 29:17SPEAKER_05: I am 30, and I was like, oh my god.
- 29:22SPEAKER_05: And I took the logic of it doesn't even make sense.
- 29:24SPEAKER_05: Mindy is South India and her parents live in Delhi, and they all speak Handy.
- 29:27SPEAKER_05: I'm like, that doesn't make sense.
- 29:28SPEAKER_05: Uh, but uh I took pictures of it on my phone and I saved them.
- 29:33SPEAKER_05: This is demented.
- 29:34SPEAKER_05: I also have pictures of Lane Kim and Adam Brody from Gilmore Girls, sorry, uh Keiko Gaina and Adam Brody.
- 29:41SPEAKER_05: Because I was like, wow, this is me.
- 29:43SPEAKER_05: Also from two years ago that I saved onto my phone.
- 29:47SPEAKER_05: It's so crazy.
- 29:48SPEAKER_05: But in this movie, Matthew Perry drives down to Mexico, right?
- 29:54SPEAKER_05: To like see her family.
- 29:56SPEAKER_05: And I was like, if I had a phone at that time, I absolutely would take a picture.
- 30:02SPEAKER_00: So you just like look back at them and just like reminisce.
- 30:05SPEAKER_05: Yes, I literally do.
- 30:09SPEAKER_05: I oh my god, I watched Bendit.
- 30:10SPEAKER_00: That's so sad.
- 30:11SPEAKER_05: I know.
- 30:12SPEAKER_05: I watched Bend at Like Becca for the first time since I was 13, uh uh during quarantine, like a month ago.
- 30:19SPEAKER_05: And I I I took pictures.
- 30:21SPEAKER_05: I was like, wow, Jonathan Reese Myers is so into Parmindernagra.
- 30:26SPEAKER_05: That's so hot.
- 30:28SPEAKER_05: Even though that movie has tons of things people can say, but I was like, wow, I was like live watching it.
- 30:33SPEAKER_05: He even at one point, my god, she's talking about how she's like, you just don't understand the like discrimination I face.
- 30:41SPEAKER_00: He's like, Oh yeah, that deadline is like I get it so bad.
- 30:45SPEAKER_05: I I get it.
- 30:46SPEAKER_05: I'm Irish, and I have no idea if that's supposed to be a joke because Gorinda uh Chada made this movie, she's an Indian director.
- 30:54SPEAKER_05: Uh but also I guess I know Irish people in the UK do have that feeling, maybe.
- 31:01SPEAKER_05: So I was like, I don't know if this is real or not.
- 31:05SPEAKER_04: Like this, this I'm laughing at it.
- 31:07SPEAKER_04: I don't know if this is supposed to be a joke.
- 31:09SPEAKER_00: It doesn't make me laugh, it makes me go, I do not like you for saying this.
- 31:14SPEAKER_05: I know, I know, it makes me go like, oh god, this is where this is where she goes, ah, noted, okay, not attracted to you anymore.
- 31:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 31:23SPEAKER_05: But still, my 13-year-old heart sings when I see it.
- 31:27unknown: Yeah.
- 31:28SPEAKER_05: It's so sad.
- 31:30SPEAKER_05: Anyway, sorry, off track, off track.
- 31:32SPEAKER_00: It's fine.
- 31:33SPEAKER_00: It's fine.
- 31:33SPEAKER_00: We it I think it's important to discuss that within the context of this as well.
- 31:36SPEAKER_00: Like all of those.
- 31:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 31:38SPEAKER_00: It's um but yeah, so it's uh Christmas in New York, and he's like, um, he's for some reason he's holding a swordfish, and it's never explained.
- 31:47SPEAKER_04: It's literally not explained.
- 31:49SPEAKER_00: And it's supposed to be for the-what's going on.
- 31:53SPEAKER_05: I think it's I I think okay, but here's what I liked about that.
- 31:59SPEAKER_05: I like as a screenwriter, as a writer, there are just little pieces of business you can give your actors.
- 32:06SPEAKER_05: So Matthew Perry does a lot of business with the swordfish for whatever reason he has it.
- 32:12SPEAKER_05: It's like funny that he has it, establishes him as like a little bit of a weirdo.
- 32:15SPEAKER_05: He's reciting Japanese phrases.
- 32:17SPEAKER_00: That's fine.
- 32:18SPEAKER_05: And I will say he's reciting the two phrases that everyone on earth absolutely knows, which is Kenichua and Noma Aragato.
- 32:26SPEAKER_05: Uh, and I do think he does not need a Walkman um uh Japanese language guide to know those two phrases.
- 32:34SPEAKER_00: Um, but he seems to be struggling with it as well to remember those two phrases.
- 32:39SPEAKER_05: Yeah, he's repeating these two things, literally every person on earth knows.
- 32:43SPEAKER_05: Uh, and he uses the swordfish to push the elevator button.
- 32:47SPEAKER_05: I'm like, that's actor business.
- 32:49SPEAKER_05: I like that.
- 32:49SPEAKER_05: That's funny.
- 32:51SPEAKER_05: And then they're like, you didn't get the Japan deal.
- 32:54SPEAKER_05: You got the the Las Vegas deal, you know, whatever.
- 32:57SPEAKER_00: You don't even want the Japan deal.
- 32:59SPEAKER_05: Yes, exactly.
- 33:00SPEAKER_00: Trust me, you want Vegas.
- 33:02SPEAKER_00: I do believe.
- 33:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah, obviously, you want the Vegas deal.
- 33:04SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah, right.
- 33:06SPEAKER_05: I do believe this swordfish is supposed to be um some sort of uh party a decoration for the because it seems to be like a sushi party for this, like which also and maybe maybe that's fucked up of me to assume the Japan deal has a sushi party, but one of his coworkers offer him sushi, and he's like, and he does his little Matthew Perry thing where he covers the fish's ears.
- 33:31SPEAKER_05: He's like, whoa, that's not sad.
- 33:33SPEAKER_05: I'm like, okay, that's a little funny.
- 33:35SPEAKER_05: That's a little bit funny.
- 33:36SPEAKER_05: That's a tiny joke.
- 33:38SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 33:39SPEAKER_00: I I I was thinking at the time, I was like, that's 100% him.
- 33:42SPEAKER_00: That's always that's his humor.
- 33:44SPEAKER_05: He is Chandler Bang.
- 33:46SPEAKER_05: If you want all Chandler Bang without most of the homophobia, most of the racism, you simply must watch Fools Rush In.
- 33:54SPEAKER_05: He is 300% Chandler banging all over the place in this movie.
- 33:58SPEAKER_05: When he gets out of that hot car, like he sits down in his convertible and it's hot because it's been sitting in the sun.
- 34:04SPEAKER_05: He's like, oh I'm like, oh my god, absolutely.
- 34:09SPEAKER_05: He's chandler bang right now.
- 34:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he so like then it cuts to central Mexico with Samaha lying in a like a what's it called?
- 34:20SPEAKER_00: An inner tube.
- 34:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah, an inner tube.
- 34:22SPEAKER_00: And she's speaking Spanish to these kids who are in love with her.
- 34:26SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 34:27SPEAKER_00: And then you that's how that's how it's explained that like she has broken things off with this one guy.
- 34:32SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 34:32SPEAKER_00: Or like she's not in love with him anymore.
- 34:34SPEAKER_05: And we foreshadow her belief in like uh uh uh or not her belief, but this idea of meeting someone for the first time and falling in love with them.
- 34:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 34:44SPEAKER_05: She's like, how can you know you're in love with me, boys, if you just met me?
- 34:47SPEAKER_05: And it's like, well, you're fucking hot.
- 34:49SPEAKER_05: She's wearing like a middle tide like shirt and like some gorgeous sarong and just bathing by herself.
- 34:55SPEAKER_00: She just like emerges from the water.
- 34:58SPEAKER_05: She looks like the hot, it's unbelievable.
- 35:02SPEAKER_05: Uh yeah, but yes, that's how we like set up her character deal a little bit, which again, I will say, for a rom-com was like pretty creative.
- 35:12SPEAKER_05: I feel like always in a rom com.
- 35:14SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it's always like the parents being like, honey, your wedding is tomorrow, and you're getting married to this guy who's clearly a dirtbag.
- 35:23SPEAKER_05: And like the guy she's supposed to marry, it seems fine.
- 35:27SPEAKER_05: I mean, he is a cop controversial.
- 35:29SPEAKER_05: Um, but he sees he it's like I like that this movie plays a little into subtlety.
- 35:35SPEAKER_05: There's not like completely cartoon characters of in any direction.
- 35:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's true.
- 35:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and like I was fully expecting them to do more with that cop character, and they don't really do a lot with him, which is fine.
- 35:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and I kind of like that they kind of just that this was her past, and let's leave that in the past and let's move on to this next part of her life.
- 35:58SPEAKER_05: I agree, because there's a version of that where it's just two men arguing over who gets to own Isabel, and it ends up just kind of being like, no, she's like, hey, we broke up and I have no interest in you.
- 36:10SPEAKER_05: And he's like, fine.
- 36:11SPEAKER_00: He's like, fine, uh, let's move on, and I will introduce myself to your new boyfriend.
- 36:17SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and I'm like, cool, then we shoot a bunch of rattlesnakes with him.
- 36:22SPEAKER_04: Another crazy scene, which I was like, hey, okay, I'll take this.
- 36:27SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 36:28SPEAKER_00: So they they like they basically they meet at she like flees, goes to Vegas, yes, uh, and she cuts in front of him a line at a Mexican restaurant to go to the bathroom.
- 36:40SPEAKER_05: Okay, here's where I'm gonna start to bring up points of contention.
- 36:44SPEAKER_05: Salma Hayek's acting is like a little all over the place for me in this movie.
- 36:48SPEAKER_00: It is.
- 36:48SPEAKER_05: Whereas Matthew Perry, he's just Chandler Binging, so if you like that, you like it.
- 36:52SPEAKER_05: If you don't, you're gonna hate this movie.
- 36:54SPEAKER_05: Salma Hayek is doing a lot of pretending, and her pretend acting is really, really bad.
- 36:59SPEAKER_05: Like her, like, oh, I when she's on the phone, like trying to demo a fake convo of how to break it off with this cop guy, is like really weird and bad.
- 37:08SPEAKER_05: And some of her like weird flirtiness with Chandler, wow, with Alex, there you go, is like very weird and off-putting.
- 37:18SPEAKER_05: When they're just doing back and forth rapport, I like it, but when they're trying to be like cute, her acting is like very weird to me.
- 37:24SPEAKER_00: It is.
- 37:25SPEAKER_00: I will give her a break because it's an early movie for her.
- 37:29SPEAKER_05: I agree, I agree.
- 37:31SPEAKER_05: Uh uh, I I'm still I'm still entranced, I'm still in.
- 37:34SPEAKER_00: Um but it's an early movie for her, and it's one of the her own her one of her first English roles as well.
- 37:39SPEAKER_05: Oh, I didn't realize that.
- 37:41SPEAKER_05: Okay, then total break for Salma Hayek, because this bathroom scene is also kind of like a weirdly written scene where I I also think the bathroom is unoccupied because doesn't someone leave it while she's on the phone.
- 37:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and they're standing there for ages.
- 37:55SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I'm like, I think someone can hop in there.
- 37:58SPEAKER_05: Whatever.
- 37:58SPEAKER_05: Anyway, basically, Matthew Perry lets her cut in line to go pee.
- 38:02SPEAKER_05: And I think this kind of exchanges cute.
- 38:04SPEAKER_05: She's like, I pee really fast.
- 38:05SPEAKER_05: I'm like, I like that.
- 38:06SPEAKER_05: I like that I like that you're talking about piss.
- 38:09SPEAKER_05: I think that's a really fun first conversation.
- 38:13SPEAKER_00: That's what gets you.
- 38:13SPEAKER_00: You're like, oh yeah, piss.
- 38:14SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I was like when I was seven, I was like, finally, there she's talking about piss, I'm talking about piss.
- 38:19SPEAKER_05: I love it.
- 38:20SPEAKER_00: I see myself in her.
- 38:21SPEAKER_05: Finally, finally.
- 38:24SPEAKER_05: Because normally I will say too, the way women are set up as relatable is often through side of sort of gross bodily functions, or like clumsiness.
- 38:34SPEAKER_05: Those are the two things.
- 38:35SPEAKER_05: It's either like, oh, let's say burped or whatever, or like usually just like I tripped and dropped a bunch of shit or whatever.
- 38:41SPEAKER_05: And you know, this falls into the former camp, but I I like it.
- 38:45SPEAKER_05: I like her talking about game.
- 38:47SPEAKER_00: No, I like it as well.
- 38:48SPEAKER_00: It's like I like them being kind of open about it and just like not playing it as some like gross thing.
- 38:53SPEAKER_00: They're just like, it is what it is.
- 38:55SPEAKER_05: Yes, yeah.
- 38:56SPEAKER_00: It's just a normal function, so that's what happens.
- 38:58SPEAKER_05: And it sort of foreshadows later, spoiler, when one of her little quirks is she likes to talk to to Alex while she's in the toilet.
- 39:07SPEAKER_05: And I simply love that.
- 39:09SPEAKER_05: I love that detail.
- 39:10SPEAKER_00: She makes them come back.
- 39:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but they do that, but like, um, but they it's all silent.
- 39:17SPEAKER_00: You don't hear it, it's in a montage.
- 39:19SPEAKER_05: It is silent.
- 39:20SPEAKER_05: So you okay, Giannis, I get it.
- 39:22SPEAKER_05: You want to hear her shitting.
- 39:22SPEAKER_05: I hear I hear it.
- 39:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 39:24SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah, I want to hear that.
- 39:25SPEAKER_00: I I want I want I want them to heighten it.
- 39:27SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I want them to they they take the music down and we raise the sound of her shitting, and that's that's that's how we improve the movie.
- 39:37SPEAKER_00: It's the only thing missing from this movie.
- 39:39SPEAKER_00: I was sound of her shitting.
- 39:41SPEAKER_05: Yeah, egregious, egregious mistake, yes.
- 39:46SPEAKER_00: But moving on, they sleep together.
- 39:48SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that okay, okay, okay, yes, okay.
- 39:51SPEAKER_05: This is another part of the movie I was like, wait a minute, we just jumped from A to Z here.
- 39:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you really do.
- 39:57SPEAKER_00: It goes from like them talking about her pissing and to them sleeping together, but like after they've slept together.
- 40:04SPEAKER_05: And I was like, okay, one, you simply must show that foreplay.
- 40:08SPEAKER_05: I think this movie should not have been PG 13, make it R, and then make me still watch it, because I want to see that foreplay.
- 40:15SPEAKER_05: And then we cut to that scene.
- 40:17SPEAKER_05: I I was I felt totally like the wind taken out of myself.
- 40:21SPEAKER_05: I was like, Yeah, I didn't see any of this cute little like, this is where you're staying?
- 40:26SPEAKER_05: Huh.
- 40:26SPEAKER_05: Nice decoration.
- 40:28SPEAKER_05: Uh blah blah blah blah blah, and then passionate kissing.
- 40:31SPEAKER_05: I didn't get any of that.
- 40:33SPEAKER_00: It's like very I I found it funny at the time because it was like very, it's very reminiscent to how my uh flat looks at the moment because I'm in the process of moving, so I'm like literally taking everything down.
- 40:43SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 40:44SPEAKER_00: You can you could say, if you look at my flat, it looks empty right now.
- 40:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 40:48SPEAKER_00: And that's how his apartment looks.
- 40:49SPEAKER_05: And that's and that's relatability, right?
- 40:51SPEAKER_05: You want to do it.
- 40:52SPEAKER_05: I related to him.
- 40:52SPEAKER_00: I'm like, yes, I relate to this.
- 40:54SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 40:54SPEAKER_00: But it's funny.
- 40:55SPEAKER_00: It was it made me laugh.
- 40:56SPEAKER_00: It was just like, oh, you're you are so lazy right now.
- 40:59SPEAKER_05: Yes, yes.
- 41:00SPEAKER_00: You have no time to like put anything up.
- 41:02SPEAKER_05: Yes, exactly.
- 41:03SPEAKER_05: Uh uh, so yes, I do wish they had given us more.
- 41:06SPEAKER_05: The beginning of this movie could have had a little bit more connective tissue, for sure.
- 41:11SPEAKER_00: But it's um, yeah, so it's it it I think it just instantly wants to go to their relationship.
- 41:17SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 41:17SPEAKER_00: I think it just wants to go there fast because it's this is like five, ten minutes into the movie.
- 41:22SPEAKER_05: Exactly.
- 41:23SPEAKER_05: So you know, you're right.
- 41:24SPEAKER_05: This is a movie that's gonna be about these two people uh uh uh finding their connection and and it it does deliver on that.
- 41:32SPEAKER_05: They do try to really establish a rapport between the two of them.
- 41:36SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 41:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, because it instantly like she sneaks out.
- 41:40SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 41:40SPEAKER_00: And then it cuts to three months later.
- 41:42SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 41:43SPEAKER_00: And uh he's he's like built in the place building everything, and then like um he's built he's like it's at the early stages of the of building the the uh club in Vegas.
- 41:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 41:53SPEAKER_00: And this woman, Catherine Stewart, shows up.
- 41:57SPEAKER_00: And I keep call I kept writing case due.
- 41:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, there you go.
- 42:01SPEAKER_00: Every time I wrote down notes, it case you.
- 42:02SPEAKER_01: Kristen Stewart shows up.
- 42:04SPEAKER_00: Kristen Stewart.
- 42:06SPEAKER_00: And I wrote down why is everyone so into Alex for no reason, because he shows no interest and like he's got no interest, he shows no interest, and he's he's fine.
- 42:17SPEAKER_05: He's totally fine, which in and I will say, which in 1997 rom-com world actually makes you really desirable because you're not um a dumbass shithead.
- 42:27SPEAKER_05: Like, again, we think of Joe Fox in uh fucking You've Got Mail, and he sucks, and she still likes he's such an asshole, yeah, and she still likes him, and in like freaking like I'm thinking of all those movies, like Sleepless in Seattle, he's he doesn't suck.
- 42:46SPEAKER_00: Anything with Tom Hanks, yeah.
- 42:48SPEAKER_05: Anything with Tom Hanks, he sucks.
- 42:49SPEAKER_05: Uh no, but just like there's so often they're like shitty dudes, and I think that Malcolm Harry is such a neutral in this movie that I guess that's supposed to be really hot.
- 42:58SPEAKER_05: His friend is like what I expect him to.
- 43:01SPEAKER_00: Oh, his friend is awful.
- 43:02SPEAKER_05: His friend is disgusting.
- 43:03SPEAKER_05: His friend is like that, I'm pervin on a bunch of women.
- 43:06SPEAKER_05: Aren't you gonna join me?
- 43:08SPEAKER_00: Uh come hang out with me.
- 43:09SPEAKER_00: Oh, you don't want to be tied down to a woman.
- 43:12SPEAKER_05: Exactly.
- 43:12SPEAKER_05: He's like what I usually expect Matthew Perry to be in this movie.
- 43:18SPEAKER_05: So, yes, this woman comes and she's like, Where is he?
- 43:21SPEAKER_05: Uh, we're old childhood friends, and you can tell she like wants to marry him tonight, uh, and she's obsessed with him.
- 43:28SPEAKER_00: She's like, yeah, I don't, yeah.
- 43:30SPEAKER_00: All we know is that they're old childhood friends.
- 43:32SPEAKER_00: We don't know anything.
- 43:33SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 43:33SPEAKER_00: I don't know anything about her.
- 43:35SPEAKER_05: Yes, exactly.
- 43:36SPEAKER_05: And we continue to not know.
- 43:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah, the whole movie, you know nothing about her.
- 43:40SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 43:40SPEAKER_00: Um, but then Isabel shows up and it turns out she's pregnant with his child, yeah, and she's keeping the baby.
- 43:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 43:47SPEAKER_00: He thinks she's gonna give have an abortion.
- 43:49SPEAKER_00: He's like, Yeah, I'm so on board with whatever you want to do, I'm pro I'm pro whatever you want to do.
- 43:53SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 43:53SPEAKER_00: And then instantly finds out she's keeping the baby and freaks out.
- 43:56SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 43:56SPEAKER_05: And that scene is actually with another woman that is desirable.
- 44:00SPEAKER_05: Alex, it's with Zelda from Sabrina.
- 44:02SPEAKER_00: Yes, that's true.
- 44:03SPEAKER_05: Beth Broderick.
- 44:04SPEAKER_05: They're having some business meeting.
- 44:06SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 44:06SPEAKER_00: I didn't even recognize her.
- 44:08SPEAKER_05: Oh, yes.
- 44:09SPEAKER_05: They're having some meeting about a building or whatever.
- 44:12SPEAKER_05: And she's like severely whatever, buying a building, making a building.
- 44:17SPEAKER_05: And she's like hitting on him severely during some business deal, and he's not interested.
- 44:22SPEAKER_05: And his scumbag friend is like, you should fuck her so we can seal the deal.
- 44:26SPEAKER_05: And then Isabel shows up at the house and is like, I'm pregnant.
- 44:29SPEAKER_05: And also from this scene that I thought was really sweet, you get the um Alex Whitman backstory.
- 44:35SPEAKER_05: He's like, Isabel, you took off.
- 44:37SPEAKER_05: I didn't have a phone number.
- 44:38SPEAKER_05: I didn't have any way to call you.
- 44:40SPEAKER_05: I was like, ooh, he wanted to call her.
- 44:43SPEAKER_05: We like that.
- 44:45SPEAKER_05: He wasn't just like, oh, hey, I thought we were never gonna see each other.
- 44:48SPEAKER_05: He like actually wanted to pursue her.
- 44:50SPEAKER_05: And I was like, again, very hot.
- 44:54SPEAKER_00: It's yeah, I I'm I'm starting to get more on board with this the more you go over it.
- 44:58SPEAKER_00: Like thank you.
- 44:59SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 44:59SPEAKER_00: It's more, there's more things in it than I thought about where like they they've like subverted the expectations.
- 45:06SPEAKER_05: Exactly.
- 45:07SPEAKER_05: They by making him milk toast, they have actually made him desirable compared to other male protagonists of this time.
- 45:15SPEAKER_04: He is a totally normal man or average man.
- 45:20SPEAKER_00: And that's what you want of the most desirable women in the world.
- 45:24SPEAKER_05: Yeah, of the average, completely vanilla man whose name could literally be read as Alex Whiteman.
- 45:32SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, it's Alex Whitman, isn't it?
- 45:34SPEAKER_05: It is.
- 45:35SPEAKER_00: Alex Whiteman.
- 45:37SPEAKER_05: I remember because um like immigrant people always use containers for other things to store other things.
- 45:44SPEAKER_05: So we always had Whitman sampler boxes that stored like sewing needles and whatever, and I was always like Whitman, like Alex Whitman when I was a lot.
- 45:53SPEAKER_00: I was so in love with Whitman.
- 45:54SPEAKER_04: I was in love with this movie.
- 45:56SPEAKER_04: Oh my god.
- 46:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 46:03SPEAKER_00: That's so funny.
- 46:04SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 46:05SPEAKER_04: So she says she's keeping the baby.
- 46:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah, she's keeping the baby, and she ends it, and then she's like, bye, and gets out of there.
- 46:12SPEAKER_05: Yes, she does dart off, and um Alex is supposed to go to this big building meeting with uh Zelda Aunt Zelda, and he's like, Oh, actually, I I got a family emergency.
- 46:23SPEAKER_05: Ooh, cheeky.
- 46:25SPEAKER_05: And he drives his uh convertible after her.
- 46:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 46:29SPEAKER_00: And they meet at the uh Hoover Dam.
- 46:32SPEAKER_00: The Hoover Dam, yes.
- 46:33SPEAKER_05: They meet at the Hoover Dam, which is a lot of attraction.
- 46:36SPEAKER_00: She always goes to as she passes through on the way to her parents.
- 46:40SPEAKER_05: We did do foreshadowing where she throws a silver dollar that I guess she always refills in her um bow compartment, and she throws it somewhere um near the Hoover Dam uh and she makes a wish, and we don't know what her wish was.
- 46:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 46:55SPEAKER_00: And he like so he like meets her there and then she says, Oh, if we're gonna do this, come and meet my family.
- 47:02SPEAKER_05: Yes, because she's basically like, if if we play this off like you're my boyfriend, and maybe it didn't work out, it's gonna work a lot better than if it was a one-night stand to them.
- 47:13SPEAKER_00: Which is fair as well.
- 47:14SPEAKER_00: It's understandable.
- 47:15SPEAKER_05: So he goes uh that night, right?
- 47:19SPEAKER_00: They go in no, they they go from they leave his car there and they go to the.
- 47:23SPEAKER_05: Yes, because he's wearing the same clothes and they go to this big party with the mariachi band and whatever it is.
- 47:30SPEAKER_00: But which is just a weekly weekly dinner.
- 47:32SPEAKER_00: Weekly dinner.
- 47:33SPEAKER_05: And I was like, wait a minute, does she drive from Mexico to Las Vegas every week?
- 47:39SPEAKER_00: She That's what I was trying to work out.
- 47:41SPEAKER_05: She lives, so her family also lives in Vegas.
- 47:44SPEAKER_05: So why was she in you know what?
- 47:47SPEAKER_05: She was staying with her great-grandmother in the beginning when she's on the inner tube, but she lives in Vegas.
- 47:52SPEAKER_05: So she drove to Vegas, that's where her weekly dinners are, and then occasionally she goes back down to visit.
- 47:58SPEAKER_00: Got you, got you.
- 47:59SPEAKER_00: That makes sense.
- 48:00SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 48:01SPEAKER_00: So I was like, that is a long drive.
- 48:03SPEAKER_00: And it's not even, it's not even like the it's not even the border of Mexico, it's the set central Mexico.
- 48:08SPEAKER_05: Yes, exactly.
- 48:08SPEAKER_05: They specify that she lives in central Mexico very often in this movie.
- 48:13SPEAKER_05: Um, yes, okay, that's very funny.
- 48:15SPEAKER_00: Because he takes like six planes at one point.
- 48:18SPEAKER_05: Wow.
- 48:18SPEAKER_00: Umlight at one point.
- 48:21SPEAKER_05: That's true.
- 48:22SPEAKER_05: Actually, that's demented to have that many layovers, but you do pay for business stuff.
- 48:26SPEAKER_05: Um but uh yes, so they drive.
- 48:30SPEAKER_00: It's a giant family get together.
- 48:32SPEAKER_00: It's every stereotype you can think of.
- 48:35SPEAKER_05: Absolutely.
- 48:36SPEAKER_05: Simply every stereotype, even the fact that I will say like the goofy thing of like the white person walking in and all the people of color literally drop their fork, stop what they're doing, and stare.
- 48:47SPEAKER_05: Whatever, I roll.
- 48:49SPEAKER_05: I mean, literally, what would happen if I brought a white person to a party is um everyone would continue speaking in Toml, they would say hello to him, forget every piece of information about him that he said, and move on with their lives.
- 49:03SPEAKER_05: They would not they they might they might say something about like uh uh like oh, where where are you from?
- 49:12SPEAKER_05: Uh oh, okay.
- 49:13SPEAKER_05: Uh uh, how long and they might ask me about like marriage or something, but that's about it.
- 49:18SPEAKER_00: The marriage thing would definitely come up, and that's about you.
- 49:20SPEAKER_05: Yes, exactly.
- 49:21SPEAKER_05: No one's like fucking breaking a glass on the floor.
- 49:25SPEAKER_00: Um but also that if you're saying they live in Vegas, they're gonna see a white guy from time to time.
- 49:31SPEAKER_05: They're gonna see the grossest white guys from time to time.
- 49:34SPEAKER_05: Um but uh yes.
- 49:36SPEAKER_05: And then uh she's like, this is my boyfriend, and then we get this interface with her ex Chewie.
- 49:41SPEAKER_02: Uh Chewie, what a great name.
- 49:44SPEAKER_05: What a great name.
- 49:45SPEAKER_05: I did, I honestly, okay, so I know I know enough about Star Wars, but Matthew Perry introduces himself as Luke Skywalker, and for like a minute, I was like, What the fuck?
- 49:57SPEAKER_05: Why did he do that?
- 49:58SPEAKER_05: Uh I thought it was.
- 49:59SPEAKER_00: Wait, when you watched it today?
- 50:01SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 50:01SPEAKER_05: Not because because I didn't, I didn't connect it to Chewy.
- 50:05SPEAKER_05: I thought he was just like, I'm Luke Skywalker to be like, I could be anybody.
- 50:08SPEAKER_05: I'm a white guy.
- 50:09SPEAKER_00: I got you, right.
- 50:10SPEAKER_05: Then when he goes, uh, okay, I was like, oh, okay, whatever.
- 50:15SPEAKER_05: Bad joke, dude, very stupid joke.
- 50:17SPEAKER_05: Uh yes, uh, uh, uh, yes.
- 50:21SPEAKER_05: Anyway, to be like, joy okay, and here's something this was so hot.
- 50:27SPEAKER_05: How he remembered, or at least tried to remember everything about her family.
- 50:33SPEAKER_05: I was like, that's hot.
- 50:35SPEAKER_05: I know he speaks to them all.
- 50:36SPEAKER_05: Yeah, he's making so much effort.
- 50:38SPEAKER_05: In Gilmore Girls, there's an episode where Adam Brody reads the entire Bible for Keiko Againa's character because uh Lane Kim's mother is super religious and would never abide by them dating because he's not Christian.
- 50:51SPEAKER_05: So he comes over, he's like, I read the entire Bible, and she's like, His mom's her mom is like, wow, cool.
- 50:57SPEAKER_05: And that is the hottest thing on earth.
- 51:01SPEAKER_05: And that was what I got.
- 51:03SPEAKER_05: I got Lane Kim, Adam, uh, uh, uh, and uh Dave Grigowski, Rugowski, whatever, vibes from uh this scene.
- 51:12SPEAKER_00: So what you're saying is what is hot is make an effort.
- 51:17SPEAKER_05: Listen, Giannis make the minimal effort at its heart.
- 51:20SPEAKER_05: It absolutely is! You have so little to do.
- 51:24SPEAKER_00: I know, it's fucking wild.
- 51:26SPEAKER_05: It's stupid.
- 51:27SPEAKER_05: Literally, if you just remember somebody's name, I'm like, thank you.
- 51:33SPEAKER_05: Uh God, terrible.
- 51:35SPEAKER_05: Uh, but yeah, he's just like kind of enjoying the party, trying to remember everybody's name.
- 51:39SPEAKER_05: He like eats the food without complaint, so minimal.
- 51:44SPEAKER_00: He like he holds the baby.
- 51:47SPEAKER_05: He holds the baby.
- 51:48SPEAKER_00: He holds the baby and he tries, yeah.
- 51:51SPEAKER_05: And Salma Hayek sees it and is like, whoa, and she's like pouring coffee for everyone.
- 51:55SPEAKER_05: She like is dead-eyed, staring at him holding the baby, like he looks hot holding the cabinet.
- 51:59SPEAKER_00: They fully sexualize her there, though, as well.
- 52:01SPEAKER_00: She's like leaning over.
- 52:02SPEAKER_05: Oh my god.
- 52:02SPEAKER_05: The amount of lean uh leaning over Salma Hayek shots of her like blowing out candles or like dancing while making food, I was like, okay, whatever.
- 52:13SPEAKER_05: We don't get any sort of sensual Matthew Perry in giant oversized clothes shots.
- 52:19SPEAKER_00: Oh, I would not.
- 52:20SPEAKER_00: Oh god, that would be so gross.
- 52:25SPEAKER_05: No attempt, even his underwear in that scene where she's like taking off his pants and it's like a little cute.
- 52:31SPEAKER_05: His underwear is so gross.
- 52:32SPEAKER_01: It's like tiny whitey is like so nasty.
- 52:36SPEAKER_01: Ugh.
- 52:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you're but you're right, like everything is so huge on him as well.
- 52:41SPEAKER_00: Except for that.
- 52:41SPEAKER_05: Oh my god.
- 52:42SPEAKER_05: Every item of clothing he's wearing is 11 sizes too big.
- 52:46SPEAKER_05: It's so big.
- 52:47SPEAKER_05: Because he's so skinny.
- 52:49SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
- 52:49SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 52:50SPEAKER_00: I think it's I think it's just like 90s attire, but like, oh, just wear something that fits you.
- 52:56SPEAKER_05: Even oh my god, he would be so much hotter if he just wore like a fitted, even if you okay, there's a scene, the scene where after he gets the cactus in his ass, he's like recovering and he wears like fitted-ish jeans and an oversized shirt.
- 53:10SPEAKER_05: Just one part of you, it just needs to be a little fitted.
- 53:13SPEAKER_05: Not all of it can be like 11-year-old wearing his dad's clothes, like kind of luck.
- 53:20SPEAKER_05: Anyway, sorry, I digress.
- 53:22SPEAKER_05: They're at this party and it's hot.
- 53:25SPEAKER_00: And then they uh yeah, he holds the baby, the baby, like, I guess, throws up on him or something.
- 53:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 53:29SPEAKER_00: Because afterwards they cut to that, and he's like what cleaning himself up.
- 53:32SPEAKER_00: And then uh and then they like embrace each other and kiss.
- 53:36SPEAKER_05: Okay, I will say that was very sudden, and they did not need to have them be so far apart to have to close that distance.
- 53:42SPEAKER_01: They could have started a little closer, so they didn't need to show all that awkward time of them walking next to each other.
- 53:48SPEAKER_04: That kiss, I can't tell if that kiss was gross or hot.
- 53:52SPEAKER_00: It was gross.
- 53:53SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 53:53SPEAKER_04: It was gross.
- 53:54SPEAKER_04: It was very like like mushy.
- 53:59SPEAKER_04: It was a little weird.
- 54:00SPEAKER_00: Rake was making like fish mouth, like a fish mouth.
- 54:02SPEAKER_05: It was very like, okay, I will say there's one microsecond where he bites her lip.
- 54:07SPEAKER_05: That was hot.
- 54:07SPEAKER_05: The rest of the kiss was very weird and like it looked like uh it was just very mushy.
- 54:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 54:15SPEAKER_00: I don't know if it's that I don't know if it's just that they don't match.
- 54:22SPEAKER_05: It might be that they don't match.
- 54:24SPEAKER_05: I mean, I think like even just like a really I'm I'm not someone that's like, give me a gentle kiss, but like a gentle kiss could have worked in that moment.
- 54:34SPEAKER_05: That was like do a pa someone sort of an alien mimicking like a passionate kiss.
- 54:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 54:40SPEAKER_05: And I think if those are your options, you can just do like a really gentle one.
- 54:44SPEAKER_00: The gentle kiss would have been nice there, because it's like it's it's also been like a nice subtle romantic thing of like exactly.
- 54:52SPEAKER_00: A nice family evening.
- 54:54SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 54:55SPEAKER_00: But they don't need a fully very weird sort of that's what you ex that's what you expect leading up to their one-night stand.
- 55:03SPEAKER_05: Exactly.
- 55:04SPEAKER_05: And we didn't see that.
- 55:05SPEAKER_05: And we didn't see they're subverting things all over the place, and maybe that's what makes it a bad movie to some, but to me.
- 55:14SPEAKER_00: But then, yeah, they they they but this is where they go and and they they get married in Vegas.
- 55:20SPEAKER_05: Okay, this was weird because this it all happened on the same evening, and I will say that's weird.
- 55:25SPEAKER_05: Um, because he was like, Let's just get married, and I I don't really get why she says yes, but also I don't care.
- 55:32SPEAKER_05: I found myself not caring.
- 55:34SPEAKER_00: Um I didn't really care.
- 55:35SPEAKER_00: I thought, like, she'll yeah, I guess she'll she's going through some stuff as well.
- 55:39SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 55:40SPEAKER_05: So they go to Vegas, they get married, and I was like, yeah, it's cute, okay, whatever.
- 55:46SPEAKER_05: And then they go to a hotel room.
- 55:49SPEAKER_05: And then this was hot.
- 55:51SPEAKER_05: This is really hot.
- 55:53SPEAKER_04: I loved this.
- 55:55SPEAKER_04: I was on the phone when that scene happened, and I just stopped talking because I was like, this rolls.
- 56:04SPEAKER_04: I love this.
- 56:06unknown: Shh.
- 56:08SPEAKER_04: I should literally, I should.
- 56:10SPEAKER_04: If I wasn't on the fucking phone, I was like, shut the fuck up.
- 56:12SPEAKER_05: I'm I I'm watching something.
- 56:14SPEAKER_05: Um uh it was okay.
- 56:17SPEAKER_05: So to describe what happened, they go to big, they're in the this like big suite.
- 56:22SPEAKER_05: Salma, okay, he's like outside like looking at the stars, and she comes out and she's wearing a very 90s sexy neglige, which is like it goes to like the fucking floor, which is very funny.
- 56:33SPEAKER_05: It seems like so annoying to wear.
- 56:36SPEAKER_05: Um, and then he turns around, he's like, you know, because it's fucking Salma Hayek and a neglige.
- 56:44SPEAKER_05: And then they jump cut too.
- 56:47SPEAKER_00: Oh no, no, you missed it.
- 56:48SPEAKER_00: Oh sorry, what he does, he does the he does the typical thing of like he's got the champagne.
- 56:52SPEAKER_00: Yes, oh, he fits it.
- 56:54SPEAKER_00: Yes, yes, and and he does the he does like the the fake ejaculation thing.
- 56:59SPEAKER_05: You're like, oh yes, the champagne pops, yeah.
- 57:03SPEAKER_05: Yes, yes, like like his dick is soon to do.
- 57:07SPEAKER_05: And then yes, exactly.
- 57:10SPEAKER_05: He came in that moment, uh, and then they're on the back, and he's on top of her and they're kissing, and I'm like, okay, Eli.
- 57:18SPEAKER_05: And then you're like, okay, how is this going to go?
- 57:20SPEAKER_05: I know this is getting a game.
- 57:22SPEAKER_05: And then he like works his way down, and of course he kisses her chest, because like literally, who on earth wouldn't kiss Salma Hayek's chest if you're in this scene?
- 57:33SPEAKER_05: And then, oh my god, he gets her stomach, which I will say, Salma Hayek's stomach has not grown in any of this movie.
- 57:42SPEAKER_05: Um she's the same size throughout, and I do think that's pretty stupid.
- 57:47SPEAKER_00: Um the fact that he notices later on is it's hilarious.
- 57:50SPEAKER_05: It's absolutely crazy.
- 57:51SPEAKER_05: And um uh he kind of pauses on her stomach and like her and then kisses her stomach as like this roll.
- 58:01SPEAKER_05: I love this.
- 58:02SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and the implication also being like they can't show it and he didn't actually do it, but like, yeah, he's gonna go down on her, and that's like Oh, he's 100% gonna go down on her.
- 58:10SPEAKER_05: And that's awesome, and I like that.
- 58:14SPEAKER_04: And I simply love that.
- 58:16SPEAKER_04: Uh that scene rolled.
- 58:17SPEAKER_04: That put that scene in a book.
- 58:19SPEAKER_04: I love it.
- 58:19SPEAKER_04: Put it in a poster and I I hang it in my home for my family to see.
- 58:27SPEAKER_00: Rika, you've got to get it framed.
- 58:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you gotta take a picture.
- 58:29SPEAKER_05: I know, I gotta take a pic, I gotta make a fucking collage.
- 58:32SPEAKER_05: Can someone make me a collage of all leading women of color kissing men?
- 58:37SPEAKER_05: Literally, I put up an ask of my collar.
- 58:39SPEAKER_00: It's gonna be so small.
- 58:40SPEAKER_05: I know, I know, it's gonna be like three pictures because they're already the ones I have.
- 58:44SPEAKER_05: I put up I put up an ask, oh my god, on my Twitter once.
- 58:47SPEAKER_05: It was like, give me any rom-com where a woman of color is the lead.
- 58:53SPEAKER_00: I think I saw this.
- 58:54SPEAKER_00: I think I saw you write this.
- 58:55SPEAKER_05: And and I said bonus points if if she's Indian.
- 58:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 58:59SPEAKER_05: The amount of people that were like, bend it like Becca, and then someone was like, they're kids, but never have I ever.
- 59:05SPEAKER_05: I'm like, cool.
- 59:06SPEAKER_05: So number one, a movie that came out in 2003 that I did literally just watch before posting the tweet.
- 59:12SPEAKER_05: And number two, teens.
- 59:14SPEAKER_05: Uh, not interesting.
- 59:17SPEAKER_05: I'm not watching never have I ever to get my rocks off.
- 59:20SPEAKER_05: Um, thank you.
- 59:23SPEAKER_00: Yes, please don't like screenshot pictures of kids.
- 59:26SPEAKER_05: Yeah, please don't.
- 59:26SPEAKER_05: I mean, Paxton, I will say the guy that plays Paxton for Love Interest is 29.
- 59:31SPEAKER_05: You can send me pictures of him.
- 59:33SPEAKER_05: Um, but I do not have any problematic that he's 29.
- 59:37SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 59:37SPEAKER_05: The main character, the actress is 18.
- 59:41SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I think that's crazy.
- 59:42SPEAKER_05: But if you want to send me pictures of the guy, that's fine.
- 59:48SPEAKER_05: I'll take those.
- 59:51SPEAKER_05: Uh but yeah, the scene was super hot.
- 59:53SPEAKER_05: I loved the scene.
- 59:54SPEAKER_05: My mouth was a gape.
- 59:56SPEAKER_05: I loved it.
- 59:58SPEAKER_00: I I can't remember like how it moves on, but I just I've got written down that I think Oh yeah, no, it goes to it goes back to uh him his building.
- 1:00:08SPEAKER_00: He's still building.
- 1:00:08SPEAKER_00: And he calls dating stupid.
- 1:00:10SPEAKER_05: I think he's not dating stupid if he's drinking uh like a pink lemonade snapple.
- 1:00:16unknown: Okay.
- 1:00:17SPEAKER_04: I I just think that up because it was such a weird thing for him to be holding, but I'm like, I think that's a choice to make him look like a little goofy still.
- 1:00:25SPEAKER_00: Do you think so?
- 1:00:26SPEAKER_00: I just I feel it I think he wanders past that thing, just picks up whatever's in there and maybe.
- 1:00:33SPEAKER_05: I think it's all art.
- 1:00:34SPEAKER_05: I think it's art.
- 1:00:36SPEAKER_00: This movie is art.
- 1:00:37SPEAKER_05: This movie's art, and he's talking to his scumbag friend.
- 1:00:40SPEAKER_05: Okay, so let's say when I was on the phone, the friend is like talking about like what?
- 1:00:46SPEAKER_05: You don't want to date?
- 1:00:47SPEAKER_05: And he's like, Yeah, I mean, think about it.
- 1:00:49SPEAKER_05: You you dated this woman for five years and you got married, and look where that ended up.
- 1:00:54SPEAKER_05: Uh uh, and and then he admits that he was he got married last night, and his friend says, We're talking about the M word.
- 1:01:01SPEAKER_05: The person on the phone I was on the phone with was like, I'm sorry, what did they just say?
- 1:01:04SPEAKER_05: I was like, they said the M word.
- 1:01:08SPEAKER_04: And I was like, Yeah, that is weird.
- 1:01:14SPEAKER_04: Uh yeah.
- 1:01:16SPEAKER_05: I think especially in I mean, espe especially in any way.
- 1:01:19SPEAKER_00: Two white guys.
- 1:01:20SPEAKER_05: Yeah, exactly.
- 1:01:21SPEAKER_05: I'm like, two white guys don't need to be saying that.
- 1:01:23SPEAKER_05: Um he does reveal he got married, uh uh and he's got the ring on, and I was like, that's hot, that's hot, I like that.
- 1:01:31SPEAKER_00: I do like the line that his friend says though, where he goes, uh so the friend so he says you don't know her, and then the friend goes, Neither do you.
- 1:01:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah and I think that's there you go.
- 1:01:42SPEAKER_00: It's like it's true, you don't know her, you've met twice.
- 1:01:46SPEAKER_05: It's true, and um from there they go.
- 1:01:51SPEAKER_00: Her dad shows up.
- 1:01:53SPEAKER_05: This is the scene that's burning in my brain.
- 1:01:55SPEAKER_05: Her dad driving through that little construction thing.
- 1:02:00SPEAKER_05: I remember that.
- 1:02:01SPEAKER_05: I remember that so vividly.
- 1:02:03SPEAKER_05: That's the scene I always remember in this movie.
- 1:02:05SPEAKER_05: And he's like, you, you are not a man, you are uh you are a thief.
- 1:02:11SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 1:02:12SPEAKER_05: You stole my daughter.
- 1:02:14SPEAKER_05: I was like, ooh, damn.
- 1:02:16SPEAKER_05: And then he just gets really sad and drives away.
- 1:02:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he comes with a baseball bat and then just drops the baseball bat and drives away.
- 1:02:22SPEAKER_05: Yes, and I know to some that's like unresolved tension, but I'm like, no, I like that.
- 1:02:29SPEAKER_05: I like this.
- 1:02:31SPEAKER_05: He's really angry.
- 1:02:33SPEAKER_00: He said his piece, he's done.
- 1:02:35SPEAKER_04: Exactly.
- 1:02:35SPEAKER_04: I like this.
- 1:02:36SPEAKER_04: I liked all of it.
- 1:02:37SPEAKER_04: I like that he scares the shit out of Matthew Perry.
- 1:02:38SPEAKER_04: I think it's good.
- 1:02:39SPEAKER_05: And Vicky embarrasses him and humiliates him, and I like that.
- 1:02:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, at his workplace.
- 1:02:44SPEAKER_05: At his workplace, at the building where he works.
- 1:02:46unknown: The building.
- 1:02:48SPEAKER_05: At the building he's building.
- 1:02:49SPEAKER_05: That's where he works.
- 1:02:49SPEAKER_05: It's his job.
- 1:02:50SPEAKER_05: And he's building a big building.
- 1:02:52SPEAKER_05: And um uh then do we cut to dinner?
- 1:02:56SPEAKER_05: Is that the oh no?
- 1:02:58SPEAKER_00: In something about in-laws, she finds out he lives in New York.
- 1:03:01SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 1:03:02SPEAKER_00: Uh oh yeah, and then the phone the whole family's at his house and redecorated.
- 1:03:06SPEAKER_05: Yes, he he comes in and they've redecorated, they've repainted, there's a dog, all sorts of stuff.
- 1:03:12SPEAKER_05: Uh uh, and um, yeah, that seems fine, I guess.
- 1:03:18SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:03:18SPEAKER_05: Uh uh, I do like the Sama Hike is swearing overalls that are baggy to imply that she is pregnant, but they still have not made her any bigger.
- 1:03:27SPEAKER_05: She is the same.
- 1:03:28SPEAKER_00: They truly do not care about making her bigger in this.
- 1:03:30SPEAKER_05: It's so crazy because by this point, I think she's like four months.
- 1:03:34SPEAKER_05: Oh no.
- 1:03:36SPEAKER_00: No, this must be three months still.
- 1:03:38SPEAKER_05: Three months, because yeah, I guess so little time has passed.
- 1:03:40SPEAKER_05: I'm like, three months.
- 1:03:42SPEAKER_05: I maybe maybe you're not showing that much, but it's only been two days since they got married.
- 1:03:47SPEAKER_05: My god.
- 1:03:49SPEAKER_00: Uh there's like huge time jumps, and then like and then really tiny ones, yeah.
- 1:03:54SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:03:55SPEAKER_00: But the tiny ones are when things happen.
- 1:03:57SPEAKER_05: When a lot of stuff happens.
- 1:03:59SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that's so funny.
- 1:04:00SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:04:00SPEAKER_05: So he's like, oh, you decorated the house, blah, blah, blah.
- 1:04:04SPEAKER_05: And then um, fuck, what?
- 1:04:07SPEAKER_00: Then there's a montage.
- 1:04:08SPEAKER_00: And uh this is where this is your favorite montage where she gets to pee.
- 1:04:13SPEAKER_05: I love this montage.
- 1:04:14SPEAKER_05: Okay, so in this montage, okay.
- 1:04:16SPEAKER_05: First we find out he went to Yale and maybe played basketball because his shirt says Yale's basketball.
- 1:04:20SPEAKER_00: Of course he went to Yale as well.
- 1:04:21SPEAKER_05: Of course he goes to Yale.
- 1:04:22SPEAKER_05: And so, and honestly, you know, they never bring it up any other time.
- 1:04:26SPEAKER_05: I'm like, cool, that's how you bring it up.
- 1:04:27SPEAKER_05: That is actor business.
- 1:04:29SPEAKER_05: That's thinking visually.
- 1:04:30SPEAKER_05: Okay, you put a little t-shirt that says Yale, show don't tell.
- 1:04:33SPEAKER_05: Show don't tell, thank you.
- 1:04:35SPEAKER_05: And so the house is so big.
- 1:04:37SPEAKER_05: Uh, okay, so they show like lots of cute little moments.
- 1:04:40SPEAKER_05: They show like she pees and he like leaves because she's gonna pee, and he's like, way! And then you see him come back, and she has to talk to him while she's in the toilet.
- 1:04:48SPEAKER_05: And I simply love that, and that's great.
- 1:04:51SPEAKER_05: Um, what are the other moments they show?
- 1:04:54SPEAKER_00: I don't remember.
- 1:04:55SPEAKER_00: I don't either.
- 1:04:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, there's like it's not a montage that is needed, really.
- 1:05:00SPEAKER_05: It's not totally needed, but we do like it.
- 1:05:03SPEAKER_05: Um, and then do we do the scene with the brothers and shit?
- 1:05:08SPEAKER_00: Or okay.
- 1:05:10SPEAKER_00: She goes, he goes with her brothers and uh she goes, she meets she runs into K Case You.
- 1:05:16SPEAKER_05: Yes, she's at lunch at the same time.
- 1:05:18SPEAKER_05: Okay, so let's let me say.
- 1:05:20SPEAKER_05: So, okay, so while he's like shooting rattlesnakes, I don't know what the purpose of their adventure was.
- 1:05:25SPEAKER_05: Uh basically like Matthew Perry lands in a pile of rattlesnakes and the brothers shoot him and he lands in a cactus.
- 1:05:31SPEAKER_05: But while while that's happening, um Isabel is at lunch with her best friend.
- 1:05:36SPEAKER_05: Here we have a subversion of a trope.
- 1:05:39SPEAKER_05: We have a white best friend who only cares about her Latin ex friend's life, as opposed to the like black best friend or Latinx best friend that's like sassy and only cares about the white protagonist's life.
- 1:05:51SPEAKER_05: This woman is barely sassy, she barely speaks.
- 1:05:54SPEAKER_05: She is a little sassy, but she's like not like this crazy like, you need to dump him, bitch, blah blah blah.
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_00: She just looks sad the whole time.
- 1:06:01SPEAKER_05: She looks really depressed, and she has been stated to be Isabel's roommate.
- 1:06:05SPEAKER_05: She's sort of a uh Debbie Downer Dower person.
- 1:06:09SPEAKER_00: Oh, I missed that she's her roommate.
- 1:06:10SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 1:06:11SPEAKER_05: In the beginning, um, Matthew Perry is like, Did you tell anyone?
- 1:06:14SPEAKER_05: She's like, I only told my roommate.
- 1:06:15unknown: Oh.
- 1:06:16SPEAKER_05: And she has some sort of generic like tandy or tally or something.
- 1:06:20SPEAKER_00: I mean, yeah, like the the best friends have no.
- 1:06:24SPEAKER_00: I don't know what his best friend's name is.
- 1:06:27SPEAKER_05: Exactly.
- 1:06:28SPEAKER_05: I'm like, honestly, I love that because that is the shoe is on the other foot bench.
- 1:06:32SPEAKER_05: This woman only cares about Isabel's life, and I'm fucking here for it.
- 1:06:35SPEAKER_05: So they're sitting at the table and they're talking about Isabel's life, and I love this, and they're eating their weird salads, and Keisu is right behind, and she goes, I'm sorry, did you say Alex Whitman of New Canaan, Connecticut?
- 1:06:49SPEAKER_05: And she's like, I don't know.
- 1:06:53SPEAKER_00: Fucking no, like I'm in Vegas.
- 1:06:56SPEAKER_05: What?
- 1:06:57SPEAKER_05: And basically, Isabel reveals that they're married and having a baby, and Case Sue is upset.
- 1:07:03SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:07:05SPEAKER_05: And then Matthew Perry returns home um drunk.
- 1:07:10SPEAKER_00: Oh, and then says the worst thing.
- 1:07:12SPEAKER_05: What does he say?
- 1:07:14SPEAKER_00: He goes, Lucy, you got some splaining to do.
- 1:07:17SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:07:18SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, why have you done that?
- 1:07:20SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that's a weird joke because one, it feels weird because Ricky Ricardo, another interracial couple, shall we say?
- 1:07:31SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 1:07:32SPEAKER_05: Um so we're using Spanish, something something.
- 1:07:36SPEAKER_05: Also, it doesn't make one bit of sense.
- 1:07:42SPEAKER_05: Because like the the Ricky would say that.
- 1:07:46SPEAKER_05: I would almost say that she could say that to him.
- 1:07:51SPEAKER_05: It wouldn't, it would be weird.
- 1:07:53SPEAKER_00: She's done nothing.
- 1:07:54SPEAKER_05: He didn't do anything.
- 1:07:56SPEAKER_05: He's the one that so that sentence didn't make any sense.
- 1:07:59SPEAKER_05: You're right.
- 1:07:59SPEAKER_05: And then he collapses onto the floor with like a bunch of cactus spikes in his so much.
- 1:08:05SPEAKER_02: So much.
- 1:08:06SPEAKER_05: And he's been drinking.
- 1:08:07SPEAKER_05: And I do think funny visual.
- 1:08:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:08:10SPEAKER_05: You know, okay, does Matthew Perry drink out of the bottle and that's funny?
- 1:08:13SPEAKER_05: No.
- 1:08:14SPEAKER_00: No.
- 1:08:15SPEAKER_05: The bottle is so empty, he pours it on the carpet and licks it off the carpet.
- 1:08:19SPEAKER_05: And that's fun.
- 1:08:20SPEAKER_05: And that's a joke, and I like that.
- 1:08:22SPEAKER_00: That was funny.
- 1:08:23SPEAKER_05: That was funny.
- 1:08:24SPEAKER_05: That's good.
- 1:08:26SPEAKER_00: Uh yeah, and then his parents show up at this point.
- 1:08:29SPEAKER_05: Yes, his parents.
- 1:08:30SPEAKER_00: Because Pastew has told her told her them about everything.
- 1:08:34SPEAKER_00: No, she hasn't told them she said, go see him or something like that.
- 1:08:37SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 1:08:37SPEAKER_05: And I will say, okay, in between this, okay.
- 1:08:40SPEAKER_05: So Isabella's cleaning, and um Matthew Perry just wants to sit down because his butt is hurting.
- 1:08:46SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah.
- 1:08:47SPEAKER_05: And she's like, oh, well, I'll have to take a look at your butt.
- 1:08:50SPEAKER_05: And she pulls down his somewhat fitted pants.
- 1:08:52SPEAKER_05: This is his bit of his best outfit of the movie.
- 1:08:55SPEAKER_05: Pulls down his somewhat fitted pants and um is like, I guess they're gonna do some butt play.
- 1:09:01SPEAKER_05: And then the doorbell rings.
- 1:09:02SPEAKER_05: And he uh he's like, oh, and he's like pulling up his pants, and you see his nasty underwear, and then he opens the door and it's his parents, and they see Isabel and they're like, oh, the help.
- 1:09:13SPEAKER_00: And it's like and oh fuck you, I hate you.
- 1:09:18SPEAKER_05: And this is where Matthew Perry does a no-no where he like kind of implies she is the help.
- 1:09:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:09:23SPEAKER_05: And uh that's a no-no, but then Isabel comes to the door and she's like, Oh my god, you're his parents.
- 1:09:28SPEAKER_05: Hi, please come in.
- 1:09:29SPEAKER_05: I look like a mess.
- 1:09:30SPEAKER_05: I'm so sorry.
- 1:09:32SPEAKER_05: And then we get the reveal, you know, he reveals to her he hasn't told them.
- 1:09:37SPEAKER_00: I'm sorry, but he's they say something first.
- 1:09:39SPEAKER_00: They haven't been yes, they say the worst thing first, which is oh, I'm sure you must get good help being so close to Mexico.
- 1:09:46SPEAKER_05: Yep, yep.
- 1:09:47SPEAKER_05: And then and then you go, ew, we hate you.
- 1:09:50SPEAKER_05: And then you find out that they weren't on a trip in Europe.
- 1:09:54SPEAKER_05: Uh uh also.
- 1:09:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they weren't.
- 1:09:56SPEAKER_05: Yes, even though he still could have called them in Europe, Europe has friends.
- 1:09:59SPEAKER_05: But um, yes.
- 1:10:00SPEAKER_00: Um generic Europe as well.
- 1:10:02SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I know.
- 1:10:03SPEAKER_05: How was Europe?
- 1:10:04SPEAKER_05: Did you tour the east, the east of Europe, East Europe, North Europe?
- 1:10:10SPEAKER_00: We saw it all.
- 1:10:11SPEAKER_05: Yeah, we saw it.
- 1:10:12SPEAKER_05: We backpacked through Europe, kind of just hit one end and then hit the other.
- 1:10:16SPEAKER_00: Um it's not that big.
- 1:10:18SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:10:19SPEAKER_05: But uh then Isabel is furious.
- 1:10:22SPEAKER_05: She's like, I and I think that I really liked this, you know.
- 1:10:24SPEAKER_05: She's like, I told my dad, who doesn't even speak to me, because I do think that sometimes telling telling immigrant parents that you're dating a white person is really hard.
- 1:10:36SPEAKER_05: Um, and I guess if you're from a really racist family, that's hard for your family too, if you're a white person.
- 1:10:43SPEAKER_05: But like immigrant parents are like, why do you hate the family?
- 1:10:47SPEAKER_05: Why do you hate the culture?
- 1:10:48SPEAKER_05: You're gonna be the reason our culture dies.
- 1:10:50SPEAKER_05: And you're like, It's so much worse.
- 1:10:52SPEAKER_00: I feel like it's so much worse for immigrant families.
- 1:10:54SPEAKER_05: It's so hard, yes.
- 1:10:57SPEAKER_05: Um, and so he's like, I'm a coward, and she's like, Well, go do it now.
- 1:11:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but now's your chance.
- 1:11:03SPEAKER_05: Yep.
- 1:11:04SPEAKER_05: Yep.
- 1:11:04SPEAKER_00: And and he does, and he does, and he does, and then they go to a Cinco de Mayo party.
- 1:11:10SPEAKER_05: Yes, they go to a Cinco de party.
- 1:11:11SPEAKER_00: Celebration.
- 1:11:13SPEAKER_00: And I hope I'm saying that correctly with my English accent.
- 1:11:17SPEAKER_05: Uh I I I've been told it's not really a holiday uh that people celebrate in Mexico anyway.
- 1:11:24SPEAKER_00: No, I'm I'm I fully think I yeah, I kind of guessed that.
- 1:11:28SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:11:29SPEAKER_00: It just seems like they've gone to gone on a boat somewhere.
- 1:11:32SPEAKER_05: That's all it's they went on a boat, and um Tomas and I don't know the mother's name as well as mother's name, are kind of arguing.
- 1:11:41SPEAKER_05: They're like, these white people, and then I do appreciate they make a bit of a sunscreen joke.
- 1:11:47SPEAKER_05: Um but I will say as a tan-skinned person, my parents don't know what sunscreen is and never told me what it was.
- 1:11:56SPEAKER_05: I never we never bought sunscreen, never had it.
- 1:12:00SPEAKER_05: When I moved to my suburb of Philly, all my neighbors wore sunscreen and they smelled like sunscreen all the time.
- 1:12:05SPEAKER_05: And I was like, oh, what is that?
- 1:12:06SPEAKER_05: I thought sunscreen and suntan lotion were the same thing.
- 1:12:09SPEAKER_00: And they were like, oh, you should just wait, are they not?
- 1:12:12SPEAKER_05: I think suntan lotion, isn't it to get is it not or is it?
- 1:12:16SPEAKER_00: Okay, I thought I don't know.
- 1:12:18SPEAKER_05: I thought suntan lotion was lotion that like protects you from the sun, but also specifically tries to like get you tanner.
- 1:12:24SPEAKER_05: Whereas sunscreen is just like protective and like you're not gonna get tanner from it.
- 1:12:28SPEAKER_00: Got you.
- 1:12:29SPEAKER_05: Someone please correct me.
- 1:12:30SPEAKER_05: I literally I don't know myself.
- 1:12:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I don't know myself.
- 1:12:32SPEAKER_00: I do.
- 1:12:33SPEAKER_00: I think that's proving like how I used all I know is that I use suntan lotion if I go somewhere and I and it's really hot and I use factor 15, and then I know friends that use like factor 50.
- 1:12:44SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that's the Yeah, so like I I didn't know any better, so I would just wear it sometimes, but I was like, I I didn't know what sunburn was either.
- 1:12:52SPEAKER_00: And they were I've never been sunburned.
- 1:12:54SPEAKER_05: Me either.
- 1:12:54SPEAKER_05: They were like, oh, your skin kills off.
- 1:12:56SPEAKER_05: It's like it peels off, yeah.
- 1:12:59SPEAKER_05: And they're like, and your skin feels hot.
- 1:13:01SPEAKER_05: I was like, wow, I really don't know what you're talking about.
- 1:13:03SPEAKER_05: And I told my parents, it was like, oh, you should get sunscreen, and they're like, no, okay.
- 1:13:10SPEAKER_00: Don't spend money on that.
- 1:13:11SPEAKER_05: Yeah, okay, fine, okay.
- 1:13:14SPEAKER_05: So, like, to this day, I have sunscreen now because we can still get skin cancer, but like, like, I I I try I try explaining that to my family, like, no, it's fine.
- 1:13:22SPEAKER_05: It's okay, whatever.
- 1:13:23SPEAKER_05: Um, so I I think the sunscreen joke worked almost in the reverse direction, but whatever, they made one.
- 1:13:28SPEAKER_05: And then they're like, We can just stay in the shade.
- 1:13:30SPEAKER_05: And then you get that the dads are like against this marriage, and the moms are like, it's cute.
- 1:13:36SPEAKER_05: And I love it.
- 1:13:37SPEAKER_00: Like, oh, it's it's lovely.
- 1:13:38SPEAKER_00: They've fallen in love.
- 1:13:40SPEAKER_00: Don't you remember when we fell in love?
- 1:13:41SPEAKER_05: Yes, and I love that.
- 1:13:43SPEAKER_05: Because that feels like a really realistic that does feel like the push and pull of when you fall in love with someone quickly.
- 1:13:50SPEAKER_05: You're like, is it too quick?
- 1:13:52SPEAKER_05: Uh, or am I being unreasonable, or like whatever.
- 1:13:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:13:56SPEAKER_00: But I also kind of like the um, I don't know, it's it's I feel like it's quite a common thing with like uh with those related with like the in the past it was quite a what more of a common thing to fall in love that quickly and get married soon.
- 1:14:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:14:10SPEAKER_00: And I think it's nice that they kept that as a thing of like, oh remember, this this is a thing and it's a normal thing.
- 1:14:16SPEAKER_02: Yes, exactly.
- 1:14:17SPEAKER_00: Because like it might not be as normal these days, but it was a normal thing back then.
- 1:14:22SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 1:14:22SPEAKER_05: It weirdly felt like a very undated conversation.
- 1:14:26SPEAKER_05: It felt like a conversation we're still having of like, oh, you kids got married too quickly and how to- I don't know, I guess it just felt right or whatever.
- 1:14:35SPEAKER_05: Um, so I liked that.
- 1:14:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:14:38SPEAKER_00: And then they uh they they uh there's a joke about like white people melting out here.
- 1:14:45SPEAKER_00: I can't remember what that is.
- 1:14:46SPEAKER_04: Oh, um, because they keep talking about how hot it is, uh, as to like break tension.
- 1:14:53SPEAKER_04: So I think does it the dad bring up uh he's just like god it is hot or something?
- 1:15:00SPEAKER_04: Uh uh and maybe that joke comes there or something.
- 1:15:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah, possibly.
- 1:15:04SPEAKER_00: I I just remember she gets uh Summer Height gets offended by it.
- 1:15:07SPEAKER_00: So I guess it's like I can't remember what it is, but yeah, I don't either.
- 1:15:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and then they argue over their faith and religion, basically.
- 1:15:15SPEAKER_01: Yes, yes, yes.
- 1:15:16SPEAKER_00: Which is uh because he doesn't seem to care about his faith and religion is a very interesting thing to see him get so angry about.
- 1:15:24SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 1:15:25SPEAKER_00: And so insistent that like it has to be Yes, which is an interesting thing.
- 1:15:31SPEAKER_05: It feels it feels, you know, that again feels like a not as dated conversation of like I think there's some agnostic people or atheist people that are like, I don't care, like, yeah, sure, we can raise our kid, however, but there are some that are like, no, I'm an atheist not by like passivity, I am an atheist by choice, and I adamantly do not wish our child to be raised with a religion or whatever.
- 1:15:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:15:56SPEAKER_00: Wait, does he is that why he's saying it?
- 1:15:58SPEAKER_00: Does he say it's because he's like doesn't no no, I'm just saying generally.
- 1:16:02SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:16:02SPEAKER_00: Right, right, right.
- 1:16:03SPEAKER_00: I thought it was to do with like because his parents want uh the baby to be uh what is it?
- 1:16:08SPEAKER_05: Protestant, I think that's oh Protestant, they're Protestant.
- 1:16:11SPEAKER_05: Sorry, this is where I stopped my rewatch, so I'm going off of my memories.
- 1:16:15SPEAKER_05: So I apologize if my memory becomes fuzzy.
- 1:16:18SPEAKER_00: Okay, got you.
- 1:16:19SPEAKER_00: So I'll I'll yeah, okay, I'll keep bringing things up then.
- 1:16:22SPEAKER_00: Okay, so then uh then they go, but then they go and have like the the baby scan, and they like which is really nice.
- 1:16:29SPEAKER_00: Yes, it's like a nice moment.
- 1:16:31SPEAKER_00: They just have a scan of the baby and stuff, and uh then so that's when he's like fully on board and you finally see him like fully embrace it, I guess.
- 1:16:40SPEAKER_00: Um and it's his birthday.
- 1:16:45SPEAKER_00: Yes, you know what I'm gonna talk about here.
- 1:16:48SPEAKER_05: Yes, go ahead.
- 1:16:51SPEAKER_00: Uh they they get sent in, she gets sent in by his parents, Grace papaya hot dogs from New York.
- 1:17:01SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:17:02SPEAKER_05: Which will travel well.
- 1:17:04SPEAKER_00: I was thinking that the entire time.
- 1:17:06SPEAKER_00: They're travel, but also they're fine.
- 1:17:10SPEAKER_00: They're not amazing.
- 1:17:11SPEAKER_05: I know I I so I've been a vegetarian for like uh 18 years or something, so I've never had one.
- 1:17:19SPEAKER_05: I I I've had really good I loved hot dogs when I ate meat.
- 1:17:23SPEAKER_05: I love hot dogs.
- 1:17:25SPEAKER_00: Are fine.
- 1:17:25SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I think I think all hot dogs are are probably pretty good, right?
- 1:17:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:17:33SPEAKER_00: I wouldn't have them sent in from New York to Vegas.
- 1:17:35SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I I I would I would if I was in New York and it was my birthday, sure.
- 1:17:40SPEAKER_05: Um, the New York to Vegas flight uh the for shipping, it seems like it would be disgusting.
- 1:17:48SPEAKER_00: I'm not even sure.
- 1:17:50SPEAKER_00: Here's the other thing.
- 1:17:51SPEAKER_00: I'm not even sure I would have them delivered from like to my apartment in New York.
- 1:17:58SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:18:00SPEAKER_00: By the time they get to my apartment, they're gonna be gross.
- 1:18:03SPEAKER_05: Yeah, because does he get them delivered as whole units or as just like frozen links that he can make?
- 1:18:10SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 1:18:11SPEAKER_00: It looks like oh oh, so in the movie it's they're like fully made and they he opens the box and it's like all made.
- 1:18:17SPEAKER_05: No, that makes sense.
- 1:18:18SPEAKER_00: Because they they eat them at the Hoover Dam.
- 1:18:20SPEAKER_05: That bread is soggy.
- 1:18:22SPEAKER_05: But I do okay, I appreciate the sentiment of combining two things that are important to them.
- 1:18:28SPEAKER_05: That is a lot of what a partnership is.
- 1:18:29SPEAKER_05: It's like, hey, the Hoover Dam has no importance to me, but it is important to you.
- 1:18:33SPEAKER_05: Hey, grace papayas have no importance to me, but they're important to you.
- 1:18:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:18:37SPEAKER_00: So then uh he finds out that it the the midtown club is so then he finds out that he's got to open early and he's and there's a midtown club in New York that's gonna open July 1st.
- 1:18:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:18:50SPEAKER_00: Because they they say, like, she says, if we stay here till October and have the baby here, it's fine, we'll move to New York.
- 1:18:56SPEAKER_00: It turns out he's got to move to uh New York on July 1st to open a midtown one.
- 1:19:00SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:19:01SPEAKER_05: I do think that's a weird stipulation.
- 1:19:03SPEAKER_05: Like, we just stay here till I don't know.
- 1:19:06SPEAKER_05: That seems a little forced.
- 1:19:08SPEAKER_05: Uh, but yes, there's this whole like where are they going to live argument in this.
- 1:19:12SPEAKER_00: And it's also like, okay, just go to New York and then come back to have the baby in Vegas, I guess.
- 1:19:17SPEAKER_00: I know, I know, yeah.
- 1:19:19SPEAKER_00: Uh it's it's that it looks like they're trying to find something and they can't really find something to add to like the Yes, the conflict.
- 1:19:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:19:27SPEAKER_00: So they uh yeah, then the club open his his club in the club finally opens in Vegas.
- 1:19:33SPEAKER_00: Which is also not a long time to have it open.
- 1:19:35SPEAKER_00: It's like it's been nine months.
- 1:19:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah to have a club open from like start to finish in nine months is very fast.
- 1:19:40SPEAKER_04: Yes, yes.
- 1:19:41SPEAKER_04: But he's good, he's good.
- 1:19:43SPEAKER_00: He's good, he's he's the best in the business, and that's why he gets New York and Vegas.
- 1:19:47SPEAKER_04: That's why he gets to big b build big buildings.
- 1:19:51SPEAKER_00: She finds out about New York through his boss who like brings it up immediately.
- 1:19:55SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 1:19:57SPEAKER_00: And then they they fight, she leaves, she ends up in the hospital, and this is where the worst part of it happens, where she says, There's no baby, get out.
- 1:20:08SPEAKER_04: I do remember this.
- 1:20:10SPEAKER_04: Yeah, there's no baby.
- 1:20:12SPEAKER_04: The baby.
- 1:20:13SPEAKER_04: She says that's the phrasing, right?
- 1:20:15SPEAKER_04: There's no baby.
- 1:20:16SPEAKER_00: I wrote it down, there is no baby, get out.
- 1:20:20SPEAKER_04: Okay, yeah, I see where the threads fall apart a bit.
- 1:20:24SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:20:27SPEAKER_00: I think that's the worst part of the movie.
- 1:20:29SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I I think um yeah, I think the phrasing of that is strange because even if you're trying to pretend like the baby it's a miscarriage.
- 1:20:42unknown: Yeah.
- 1:20:42SPEAKER_05: Saying that is really impactful and very like, whoa, she hates his god so much that she's willing to say the baby died.
- 1:20:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:20:50SPEAKER_05: Saying, I don't want you involved in the baby's life.
- 1:20:52SPEAKER_05: Okay, whoa, you're admitting you have the baby.
- 1:20:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:20:55SPEAKER_05: But this is a weird in-between.
- 1:20:57SPEAKER_05: I've never been pregnant.
- 1:21:02SPEAKER_04: Which could be true.
- 1:21:03SPEAKER_04: She never grew.
- 1:21:04SPEAKER_00: Um yeah, that is true.
- 1:21:07SPEAKER_00: She does never grow.
- 1:21:08SPEAKER_00: And and at this point, she would have been what, seven months pregnant?
- 1:21:13SPEAKER_00: I guess so.
- 1:21:13SPEAKER_04: So it's a premature baby.
- 1:21:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:21:16SPEAKER_00: That's what it makes it look like.
- 1:21:18SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 1:21:18SPEAKER_00: And it looks like she's miscarried.
- 1:21:20SPEAKER_00: But I think the the I think the implication is that uh that she's miscarried here.
- 1:21:24SPEAKER_00: I do too.
- 1:21:24SPEAKER_05: I do think you should change.
- 1:21:26SPEAKER_00: But the phrasing is not good.
- 1:21:28SPEAKER_04: The baby doesn't exist.
- 1:21:30SPEAKER_04: The baby has disappeared, it has vanished.
- 1:21:36SPEAKER_00: I don't know where the baby is.
- 1:21:38SPEAKER_04: Oh yeah, yeah.
- 1:21:40SPEAKER_04: I'm just using medical jargon here.
- 1:21:41SPEAKER_04: I don't know where the baby is.
- 1:21:44SPEAKER_04: I it's absorbed into my stomach.
- 1:21:50SPEAKER_00: So he goes back to New York, she goes back to Mexico.
- 1:21:53SPEAKER_00: She goes to Mexico to stay with her like great-grandmother.
- 1:21:56unknown: Yeah.
- 1:21:57SPEAKER_00: And she sends him divorce papers.
- 1:21:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:22:00SPEAKER_00: But then you find out she's still pregnant.
- 1:22:03SPEAKER_00: Because she this is when you finally see that she's got like a little bit of a bump.
- 1:22:06SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 1:22:06SPEAKER_00: But it's not enough to like be like this far along.
- 1:22:09SPEAKER_05: I know.
- 1:22:10SPEAKER_05: It's dumb, yes.
- 1:22:12SPEAKER_00: And she says to her great-grandmother, if he if I didn't leave him, he would have left me, which is so sad.
- 1:22:17SPEAKER_05: That's really sad.
- 1:22:18SPEAKER_05: I do think that, yeah, you get trapped, and honestly, that that spoke to me as someone that did not feel represented on screen.
- 1:22:26SPEAKER_05: It's like, yeah, I guess he would have left me, right?
- 1:22:28SPEAKER_05: And it's so sad.
- 1:22:30SPEAKER_00: It's like, oh, that that's what you think is inevitable that he would have left you.
- 1:22:34SPEAKER_04: But you're song the hike, she's not gonna leave you.
- 1:22:39SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 1:22:40SPEAKER_00: So then like Kester invites him sailing on the f uh and he's like, yeah, sure, I'll go.
- 1:22:45SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:22:46SPEAKER_00: Because he just got the divorce papers.
- 1:22:48SPEAKER_00: Uh and then he walks past a priest who says there's signs everywhere.
- 1:22:52SPEAKER_00: And then he starts seeing the signs.
- 1:22:54SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 1:22:54SPEAKER_00: You see Grace Papier, because he's like right outside the right outside where he lives.
- 1:22:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:22:58SPEAKER_00: Then he sees a little dog that looks like the dog that they had.
- 1:23:00SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 1:23:01SPEAKER_00: He sees he says a sign for Caesar's Palace, and he sees the Grand Canyon.
- 1:23:05SPEAKER_05: Why does he see the Grand Canyon?
- 1:23:07SPEAKER_05: Is it on like a tourism, like Yeah.
- 1:23:10SPEAKER_05: Yeah, okay.
- 1:23:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's it's most of it is on tourism thing.
- 1:23:13SPEAKER_00: And then he sees a little girl.
- 1:23:15SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 1:23:16SPEAKER_00: In the helicopter place.
- 1:23:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:23:18SPEAKER_00: He goes to get on the helicopter.
- 1:23:19SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah, by the way, they're gonna get a helicopter to go to the sailing.
- 1:23:22SPEAKER_01: Yes, okay, perfect.
- 1:23:24SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 1:23:24SPEAKER_00: Because they're bridge.
- 1:23:25SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 1:23:27SPEAKER_00: Um and he's a he sees a little Latina child and she's she's called Isabella.
- 1:23:33SPEAKER_05: Wow, and that could be his little Latina child named Isabella.
- 1:23:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:23:38SPEAKER_05: Okay, those are quite a few sides.
- 1:23:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and it's all on the way to the helicopter.
- 1:23:43SPEAKER_05: Oh god.
- 1:23:44SPEAKER_00: So then he goes, and then he goes to Mexico and he says, like, oh, how can I uh how do I get to uh this place?
- 1:23:51SPEAKER_00: And then the this guy says Trambaya, and he's like, What's Trambaya?
- 1:23:57SPEAKER_00: And he's like, Trambaya, Trambaya, and he keeps saying it, and he goes, What's Tramba?
- 1:24:00SPEAKER_00: And he goes, Trambaya's the bus over there.
- 1:24:03SPEAKER_02: Oh.
- 1:24:05SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:24:06SPEAKER_00: So, okay, you understood the entire time.
- 1:24:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yes.
- 1:24:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, interesting.
- 1:24:11SPEAKER_00: Um then he gets on a and then he gets on the bus and then he gets a donkey.
- 1:24:15SPEAKER_00: Because of course he gets a donkey.
- 1:24:16SPEAKER_05: A donkey, yeah.
- 1:24:17SPEAKER_05: Sorry, there's just no sort of way to get to Mexico, unfortunately.
- 1:24:20SPEAKER_05: The way Isabel went is actually blocked off now.
- 1:24:23SPEAKER_00: He's riding the donkey, and a little kid is dragging the donkey along.
- 1:24:26SPEAKER_00: So the two the kid's walking alongside it, so he could have walked alongside.
- 1:24:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he could, yeah, that's kind of crazy.
- 1:24:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:24:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:24:32SPEAKER_01: Okay, I get it.
- 1:24:33SPEAKER_01: This movie falls apart a little.
- 1:24:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah, this is where it falls starts.
- 1:24:37SPEAKER_00: This is really where it falls apart.
- 1:24:38SPEAKER_00: Um, he goes back to uh she's gone back to Vegas, he finds out.
- 1:24:43SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:24:43SPEAKER_00: So and then he goes, like, waits at the border for her, like at the border of Vegas, uh of uh Arizona and uh Nevada.
- 1:24:51SPEAKER_00: Nevada, yeah.
- 1:24:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:24:53SPEAKER_00: And it starts pouring down with rain.
- 1:24:55SPEAKER_00: She almost cracked it.
- 1:24:57SPEAKER_05: This is the other scene I remember.
- 1:24:59SPEAKER_05: So it's the crashing through the construction site, and this where she uh goes into labor on the Hoover Dam in the rain, and he she's she starts yelling at him when he arrives.
- 1:25:09SPEAKER_05: She starts yelling at him, go away, shut up, whatever.
- 1:25:11SPEAKER_05: Because that's I was like, whoa, pregnant women get mad.
- 1:25:14SPEAKER_05: Okay, cool.
- 1:25:15SPEAKER_05: That's where I got that implication.
- 1:25:18SPEAKER_00: That is a stereotype of pregnant women like getting mad in a movie or a TV show.
- 1:25:22SPEAKER_05: Yes, mad and nauseous, that's the two.
- 1:25:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah, well, she does get nauseous at the beginning of the movie.
- 1:25:27SPEAKER_05: She does, and she has to eat saltines at his house.
- 1:25:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:25:31SPEAKER_00: Uh yeah, she almost crashes, her water breaks, they have the baby on the highway.
- 1:25:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:25:36SPEAKER_00: For some reason, instead of going into the ambulance, they have the baby on the highway, like literally on the highway.
- 1:25:41SPEAKER_00: Like they could have gone in because instantly they're inside the ambulance afterwards.
- 1:25:45SPEAKER_05: She's lying on the ground, right?
- 1:25:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:25:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:25:47SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it's crazy.
- 1:25:49SPEAKER_05: And then doesn't he say, like, you look so beautiful, or like does it do something?
- 1:25:52SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 1:25:53SPEAKER_05: I think whatever he does, it's implied, because I did think that's hot.
- 1:25:59SPEAKER_00: And it's it's a girl, and uh then they find out that at that moment it's gone past 12, so they're divorced because the divorce papers have gone through.
- 1:26:09SPEAKER_00: And then it cuts to a nice big wedding at the Grand Canyon.
- 1:26:13SPEAKER_05: Yes, gorgeous.
- 1:26:16SPEAKER_00: And then it flies, and then a helicopter shot pans away.
- 1:26:20SPEAKER_05: Wow.
- 1:26:20SPEAKER_05: And that is the movie!
- 1:26:23SPEAKER_00: That's the movie.
- 1:26:24SPEAKER_05: Oh my god.
- 1:26:26SPEAKER_00: What is it that you love about it?
- 1:26:29SPEAKER_05: I think I told you.
- 1:26:31SPEAKER_05: I love that it's an interracial couple, I love that it subverts a lot of things.
- 1:26:35SPEAKER_05: I uh I love that he's not an asshole.
- 1:26:37SPEAKER_05: I think those are all really great assets to the movie.
- 1:26:40SPEAKER_05: And I think it's like a totally typical rom-com.
- 1:26:43SPEAKER_05: I think it's like I loved it because I saw representation.
- 1:26:47SPEAKER_05: Um and if someone were like, that's not my favorite movie, I'd go, okay, yeah, I get it.
- 1:26:51SPEAKER_05: But to see it get a 32%, I was like, no, you are wrong.
- 1:26:57SPEAKER_05: You are rating this at a different level than you're rating other.
- 1:27:00SPEAKER_05: It is way too low.
- 1:27:01SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:27:01SPEAKER_00: It's at least 50% because it's like it's got good moments, but it's got it's got bad moments, but it's like it's perfectly fine.
- 1:27:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's a serviceable rom-com.
- 1:27:10SPEAKER_05: Yes, exactly.
- 1:27:12SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 1:27:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so I think you pretty much you did pretty much cover it throughout.
- 1:27:16SPEAKER_00: So I guess we don't need to go into too much detail.
- 1:27:18SPEAKER_00: Let's go over like I want to read the bad reviews that I was telling you about before.
- 1:27:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:27:23SPEAKER_05: Tell me.
- 1:27:24SPEAKER_00: Okay, so there are 28 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes here.
- 1:27:29SPEAKER_00: Most of them say, quote, not available.
- 1:27:32SPEAKER_01: Yes, I'm seeing that now.
- 1:27:33SPEAKER_01: That's so stupid.
- 1:27:34SPEAKER_01: I'm not gonna wait for you to read them.
- 1:27:36SPEAKER_00: So I want to read uh the USA Today review, which says, take away the ethnic and pregnancy angles, and we've seen this premise countless times.
- 1:27:47SPEAKER_05: Okay, so this is something that pisses me off because Hollywood will simultaneously be like, let's make this but black, this but Latinx, or whatever, of some remade property, but then they also come back.
- 1:28:00SPEAKER_05: And give you a criticism like that.
- 1:28:01SPEAKER_05: It's like, okay, dumbasses, what the fuck do you want?
- 1:28:04SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it's a rom-com with a Latin X uh lead and a pregnancy.
- 1:28:09SPEAKER_05: Those make it different.
- 1:28:10SPEAKER_05: Isn't every fucking rom-com the same as fucking when Harry met Sally when you know sleepless in Seattle?
- 1:28:17SPEAKER_05: Whatever, every fucking thing is the same.
- 1:28:19SPEAKER_05: Are you stupid?
- 1:28:20SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:28:21SPEAKER_00: And this this came up also with uh I did the movie uh oh what is it?
- 1:28:29SPEAKER_05: I bet it's something I like or haven't seen.
- 1:28:32SPEAKER_00: It is.
- 1:28:34SPEAKER_00: Uh hold on.
- 1:28:36SPEAKER_00: The wedding planner.
- 1:28:37SPEAKER_00: This came up with the wedding planner.
- 1:28:39SPEAKER_00: This came up with the wedding planner as well.
- 1:28:41SPEAKER_05: I also I criticized it.
- 1:28:43SPEAKER_00: I criticized it for that.
- 1:28:44SPEAKER_05: I've rewatched that movie many times for the same reason I've rewatched this movie.
- 1:28:51SPEAKER_04: I'm like, yes, it's a Latina lead, I love it.
- 1:28:54SPEAKER_04: Of course, it's also Jennifer Lopez.
- 1:28:56SPEAKER_04: You're like, okay.
- 1:28:57SPEAKER_00: I know.
- 1:28:58SPEAKER_01: Jennifer Lopez and Samahaya, because just your typical average-looking women.
- 1:29:06SPEAKER_00: Um but yeah, this came this came up with those.
- 1:29:09SPEAKER_00: So like like you're saying, yeah, it that they criticize it if it's one thing, and then they try and do it that way, and then they criticize it for that.
- 1:29:16SPEAKER_05: Like it's so unfair, and it's also like, listen, there are so many, even though this movie does not have perfect cultural specificity whatsoever, it is different.
- 1:29:26SPEAKER_05: Yeah, a what?
- 1:29:27SPEAKER_05: Surprising.
- 1:29:28SPEAKER_05: It is there is so much like I don't a family doesn't get involved in the same way in like a you've got male or like a sleepist in Seattle or whatever.
- 1:29:39SPEAKER_05: That is a cultural specific, like it's annoying as a stereotype, but if there's a South Asian movie, their family is always involved, and you know, like from communal cultures, that's just like a thing, I guess, in movies.
- 1:29:49SPEAKER_05: And so, like, I don't know, fuck off USA today.
- 1:29:52SPEAKER_05: Eat my ass.
- 1:29:53SPEAKER_00: Like, yeah.
- 1:29:55SPEAKER_00: But you know who did give it a good review?
- 1:29:57SPEAKER_05: Who?
- 1:29:57SPEAKER_00: Roger Ebert.
- 1:29:59SPEAKER_05: Thank you.
- 1:30:00SPEAKER_05: What do you say?
- 1:30:00SPEAKER_00: Roger Ebert gave it, he said, Fool's Russian is a sweet, entertaining retrade of an ancient formula in which opposites attract despite all the forces arrayed to push them apart.
- 1:30:09SPEAKER_05: Okay, see, that I like because they're not even that opposite.
- 1:30:13SPEAKER_05: And I again I'll say it's you've got Mill, which is a movie I love, they make them so opposite that they hate each other.
- 1:30:20SPEAKER_05: These two are never so opposite that they hate each other.
- 1:30:22SPEAKER_05: You can kind of see like she finds him funny and charming, and he finds her like really uh uh like intuitive and caring.
- 1:30:31SPEAKER_05: And I like that.
- 1:30:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:30:34SPEAKER_00: Okay, great.
- 1:30:36SPEAKER_00: So like let's let's go over uh one final thing.
- 1:30:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:30:39SPEAKER_00: Uh I'll I won't keep you too much longer.
- 1:30:41SPEAKER_00: Um I wanna I want to know, and this is gonna be interesting from you who has seen no movies.
- 1:30:46SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 1:30:48SPEAKER_00: A movie that is well reviewed that you think is bad.
- 1:30:52SPEAKER_05: Another oh, like another suggestion for the list.
- 1:30:55SPEAKER_05: Oh, oh, oh, oh no, no, no.
- 1:30:56SPEAKER_05: Oh, oh well, sorry, the inverse.
- 1:30:58SPEAKER_00: So the reverse, yeah.
- 1:30:59SPEAKER_05: Oh, I've got one for you.
- 1:31:01SPEAKER_05: Don't think twice.
- 1:31:04SPEAKER_05: That improv movie directed by Ireglass.
- 1:31:08SPEAKER_05: That was one of the directed by Mike Babiglia.
- 1:31:10SPEAKER_05: It was directed by Mike, oh, but it was EP'd by Iraglass.
- 1:31:13SPEAKER_05: Yeah, sorry.
- 1:31:13SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:31:14SPEAKER_05: It was EP'd by Ireglass, directed by Mike Braviglia, starring Mike Barbiglia and Keaton Michael Key, and written by him.
- 1:31:21SPEAKER_05: I don't mind Mike Verbiglia.
- 1:31:23SPEAKER_05: I love Keaton Michael Key, I love Gillian Jacobs.
- 1:31:26SPEAKER_05: That movie was terrible.
- 1:31:28SPEAKER_05: And I think that's fine to have a terrible movie.
- 1:31:31SPEAKER_05: It was also uncomfortable as a comedian watching it, but I watch I watched it with one of my good friends who's not a comedian, and she was like, that was so uncomfortable to watch.
- 1:31:39SPEAKER_05: And that movie, at the time at least, I don't know what it has now, had like a 99% rotten tomato.
- 1:31:45SPEAKER_00: It's very high.
- 1:31:47SPEAKER_05: Unbelievable.
- 1:31:49SPEAKER_05: That movie has seven main characters, most of which that don't get addressed.
- 1:31:56SPEAKER_05: They everyone is such a psychotic asshole.
- 1:31:59SPEAKER_05: Like when um Chris Gathard's father dies and they all like make jokes.
- 1:32:03SPEAKER_05: I'm like, if someone did that, I'm a comedian.
- 1:32:06SPEAKER_05: I would throw them out of the car.
- 1:32:07SPEAKER_05: I would tuck it tuck and roll a bitch onto the highway.
- 1:32:11SPEAKER_05: That's not, I know they're trying to represent a certain type of comedian, but it's like so weird.
- 1:32:16SPEAKER_05: And like the jealousy thing is real, but it's played super stupidly.
- 1:32:19SPEAKER_05: Like, none of these people, I believe, are actually friends.
- 1:32:22SPEAKER_05: And I think that jealousy stuff comes in so much more when you aren't actually friends.
- 1:32:27SPEAKER_05: Watching improv scenes on film is actually a form of torture.
- 1:32:32SPEAKER_05: Um, it is so bad, it is terrible.
- 1:32:35SPEAKER_05: No improv should ever be filmed and watched.
- 1:32:39SPEAKER_05: Um they didn't talk, Kate Lakie's character got absolutely nothing to do, even though she's awesome.
- 1:32:46SPEAKER_05: Tammy Sager got nothing to do, even though she's like so deeply funny, and her angle would have been interesting too, because she she's a really rich character in that movie that doesn't need to work.
- 1:32:56SPEAKER_05: Um, Mike Robiglia's character is disgusting, and I didn't understand how he went from scumbag to I'll be a dad in three seconds.
- 1:33:03SPEAKER_05: Um, the building they live in, he sleeps with like all his 101 students, and it's like nasty.
- 1:33:08SPEAKER_00: There's like no gross qualities.
- 1:33:10SPEAKER_05: The building they live in was my friend's building, the exterior they should.
- 1:33:13SPEAKER_04: I'm like, oh that's where my friend lives.
- 1:33:16SPEAKER_04: They screen painted the address on.
- 1:33:18SPEAKER_04: It's like a really shitty old recording building.
- 1:33:20SPEAKER_00: Was it your friend an improviser as well?
- 1:33:22SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 1:33:23SPEAKER_05: Uh uh, it's a shitty recording studio that got converted into apartments.
- 1:33:27SPEAKER_05: So he lived in like an all-glass room that they all the guys had to put posters on, and then they fashioned two rooms on top of the recording studio rooms with ladders.
- 1:33:35SPEAKER_05: It was terrible.
- 1:33:36SPEAKER_05: And their kitchen table was a ping-pong table, it's disgusting.
- 1:33:39SPEAKER_05: And like, so that part's accurate, but I'm like, and they're all talking about like, what the fuck was Saturday Night Live called?
- 1:33:45SPEAKER_05: Like last night, today, or whatever the fuck.
- 1:33:47SPEAKER_05: It was just like and the idea that like Gillian Jacobs self-sabotages and doesn't show, I'm like, I don't know.
- 1:33:52SPEAKER_05: It was all so like unrealistic and stupid to me, and all the characters were undesirable and hated, like just so hateful, and I I I hated that movie so much.
- 1:34:02SPEAKER_05: And I think I maybe hated it more because it got such a good review.
- 1:34:05SPEAKER_05: I think if it didn't get such a good review, I'd be like, it was whatever, I didn't like it.
- 1:34:09SPEAKER_05: But that it got such good reviews.
- 1:34:11SPEAKER_05: Like, Bulls Rashad is a better movie than Don't Think Twice.
- 1:34:13SPEAKER_05: Get the fuck out of here.
- 1:34:16SPEAKER_00: I it doesn't I I haven't seen it in a while, but I saw it when it when when it first came out, I saw it, and that was like my first year of improv as well.
- 1:34:25SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:34:27SPEAKER_05: But I can imagine in that time it might hit differently too.
- 1:34:31SPEAKER_00: Thinking I it hit me differently, and it also like uh I was like really pursuing comedy at that point as well, and I I went to see it at um the London Film Festival, and uh Mike Babigbia came out and did a QA afterwards, and I asked him a question about it, uh, but I got like really in my feelings about it.
- 1:34:53SPEAKER_00: And I was like I was just like, oh, it touched me so much.
- 1:34:59SPEAKER_05: That's great.
- 1:35:00SPEAKER_05: I have a lot of friends who said they were really touched by it.
- 1:35:03SPEAKER_05: So I totally get that.
- 1:35:04SPEAKER_00: But then he was like, Are you an improviser?
- 1:35:06SPEAKER_00: And I was like, Yeah, and he goes, Okay, that makes sense.
- 1:35:09SPEAKER_05: Ha! Oh, because I made this to be a piece of shit.
- 1:35:11SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I just don't like uh uh uh Okay.
- 1:35:16SPEAKER_05: Um yeah, I I guess I just I did not drive with that movie at all.
- 1:35:21SPEAKER_05: I totally I have people that like felt it resonated with them so much they loved the touching of jealousy, they loved like the realness of it, and I just didn't get that from it.
- 1:35:30SPEAKER_05: Um, and again, I don't think I would have so much negative to say if it didn't have like a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes or something crazy.
- 1:35:37SPEAKER_00: But do you think do you not think the jealousy part is like an accurate representation of a lot of improv?
- 1:35:43SPEAKER_05: I I think the jealousy part was maybe the most relatable part, but I did not find any of them to be friends.
- 1:35:50SPEAKER_05: They all seemed like weird acquaintances.
- 1:35:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that is that's the one thing.
- 1:35:54SPEAKER_05: And I do think that that exists.
- 1:35:56SPEAKER_05: There it and jealousy will pop up in those weird acquaintance situations.
- 1:35:59SPEAKER_05: But it's like, well, I don't want to see I get that.
- 1:36:02SPEAKER_05: The more deeper struggle is when you are jealous of your really good friend.
- 1:36:07SPEAKER_05: They all felt like they were only friends through comedy anyway.
- 1:36:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's true.
- 1:36:12SPEAKER_05: And that happens, and that in itself is really toxic because it does become a thing of like when you don't joke around with your friends.
- 1:36:18SPEAKER_05: Like, I've been on improv teams, and then the moment that team gets disbanded, you stop talking to those people.
- 1:36:22SPEAKER_05: And it's like, oh, we were only friends through circumstance, so that sucks.
- 1:36:25SPEAKER_05: That is a thing, but I guess I just don't I'd rather see people that are really, really good friends that came up together, that like love each other genuinely.
- 1:36:32SPEAKER_05: That formed a team together through their friendship and and then one of them gets something and they're like, Oh, cool, man, good job.
- 1:36:38SPEAKER_05: And you feel like shit because you feel bad that you don't support your friend.
- 1:36:42SPEAKER_05: That's true.
- 1:36:43SPEAKER_05: So that to me is the more interesting angle, and they just like it was too much.
- 1:36:46SPEAKER_05: I almost think they should have just reduced the characters to be just they only focused on Gillian, Keegan, and Mike anyway.
- 1:36:52SPEAKER_05: They should have just kept it at three because they just type diluted a lot of the time that could have been used building that.
- 1:36:58SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
- 1:37:00SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
- 1:37:01SPEAKER_00: I think they focused just because they're the three, they technically the three most famous, and that's why they're gonna focus on it.
- 1:37:06SPEAKER_05: Exactly.
- 1:37:07SPEAKER_05: And they knew they couldn't have like a three-pro group, I guess.
- 1:37:10SPEAKER_05: So they needed like Chris Gethard and Tammy and Kate.
- 1:37:13SPEAKER_05: Like Kate is so funny.
- 1:37:14SPEAKER_05: I wish and her thing was like she is like a sketch, she like drew illustrations or something.
- 1:37:20SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:37:21SPEAKER_00: They all have their individual thing, but yes.
- 1:37:23SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
- 1:37:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:37:24SPEAKER_00: No, I kind of agree with you thinking back on it.
- 1:37:26SPEAKER_00: Like, I I see why.
- 1:37:28SPEAKER_00: And I also agree that improv should not be filmed.
- 1:37:31SPEAKER_05: It watching those scenes was really painful.
- 1:37:35SPEAKER_05: And then watching them find meaning in the scenes as they were doing it.
- 1:37:39SPEAKER_05: I super hated that.
- 1:37:41SPEAKER_05: I really hated that.
- 1:37:44SPEAKER_00: Although I do like um uh what's it called at the moment?
- 1:37:47SPEAKER_00: Um Ben Schwartz and um Oh, uh Middle Digition Schwartz.
- 1:37:51SPEAKER_00: Middle Digition Schwartz, yeah.
- 1:37:52SPEAKER_00: I do enjoy that.
- 1:37:53SPEAKER_00: I have enjoyed that.
- 1:37:54SPEAKER_05: I think like a TJ, because that's like a TJ and Dave style thing, right?
- 1:37:57SPEAKER_05: Where it's like two people pretty long form.
- 1:38:01SPEAKER_05: I think the like edits and like that kind of stuff is like so like because they're doing like almost like a film that's improvised.
- 1:38:09SPEAKER_05: It's so long.
- 1:38:10SPEAKER_05: Um TJ and Dave, where it's like doing like, son, I know you're hungry, but stop hitting me in the face, or whatever, like kind of seems just like I don't know, very weird to watch.
- 1:38:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah, however, that's all how we're all doing it at the moment because we're all online.
- 1:38:27SPEAKER_05: I know.
- 1:38:27SPEAKER_05: So maybe, maybe egg on my face, but uh death twice had the right idea, film all improv.
- 1:38:35SPEAKER_00: It's not the same, yeah.
- 1:38:36SPEAKER_00: Not the same.
- 1:38:37SPEAKER_01: No, it's not.
- 1:38:39SPEAKER_00: It's so fun.
- 1:38:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah, right.
- 1:38:43SPEAKER_00: Okay, well, I'll I'll let you go now.
- 1:38:45SPEAKER_00: Uh this would be great.
- 1:38:47SPEAKER_00: Do you have Yeah, go ahead.

- 1:38:51SPEAKER_05: I'm sorry I ranted so much about this movie.
- 1:38:54SPEAKER_00: No, I want I bring people on to rant about the movie, so that's what I want.
- 1:39:00SPEAKER_00: And I don't think you ranted anyway.
- 1:39:01SPEAKER_00: I think you just talked about the movie.
- 1:39:03SPEAKER_01: Okay, great.
