- 0:03Speaker 1: Smell us now, Lady, Welcome to Meet Eater Trivia mea podcast.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Welcome to Meet Eater Radio Live. We're coming to you
- 0:29Speaker 2: from met Eater hqan Bozeman, Montana, but we're not live today.
- 0:33Speaker 2: I'm your host, Spencer Newhart, joined by Ryan Callahan, Giannis Putelus,
- 0:37Speaker 2: Randall Williams, and Corey Culkins. This is a pre recorded
- 0:40Speaker 2: episode because we're on Christmas Break. On today's episode, we're
- 0:44Speaker 2: answering your questions from how to pick the perfect puppy
- 0:48Speaker 2: to unique ways to prepare ground meat. This entire show
- 0:52Speaker 2: is Q and A the boys. It is dang near
- 0:54Speaker 2: twenty twenty five. You got any New Year's resolutions?
- 0:57Speaker 3: Henna be working?
- 0:58Speaker 1: I think we should tackle the fact that us adult
- 1:02Speaker 1: man all in this rumor on Christmas break much like
- 1:05Speaker 1: your children.
- 1:07Speaker 2: Uh huh, and well.
- 1:10Speaker 1: I think it's important to note that in order to
- 1:12Speaker 1: go on Christmas break, you have to do three times
- 1:16Speaker 1: the amount of work ahead of time in order to
- 1:19Speaker 1: then have the break.
- 1:20Speaker 4: Which is fine.
- 1:20Speaker 5: The past two weeks have convinced me that I don't
- 1:22Speaker 5: really want a Christmas break moving forward. Just too much stuff, plus,
- 1:29Speaker 5: you know, less time at home with the family.
- 1:33Speaker 6: Yeah, well, you two without the kids obviously don't understand it.
- 1:38Speaker 6: Kids get about sixteen days off coming up here. Oh,
- 1:41Speaker 6: we're in the midst of it, right, hmm as we're live.
- 1:43Speaker 5: Here, am I right? Phil?
- 1:45Speaker 4: Oh? Yeah, appreciate the choir bud. All right.
- 1:48Speaker 2: The question was does anybody have any New Year's resolutions?
- 1:51Speaker 2: It's January tewond when the show comes out.
- 1:53Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm gonna start drinking at.
- 1:54Speaker 2: Work, okay, Cal has an Edmund Fitzgerald logger.
- 1:59Speaker 1: Yeah, eight Lake's Brewing Company. It's a porter. Okay, very
- 2:05Speaker 1: tasty six percent.
- 2:07Speaker 4: She's a doozy thirty seven. It's pretty tough for me
- 2:10Speaker 4: these days.
- 2:11Speaker 2: He's going to start talking like Michigan you're here soon.
- 2:15Speaker 4: I don't know if it's a resolution, but I did
- 2:18Speaker 4: get lucky enough to sign up and get onto the
- 2:21Speaker 4: roster to run the Crazy Mountain one hundred and so
- 2:26Speaker 4: it's pretty exciting.
- 2:27Speaker 2: When is it.
- 2:27Speaker 4: It's July twenty fifth, Okay, so I have roughly six
- 2:32Speaker 4: months of heavy duty training and that started by now.
- 2:36Speaker 5: Yes, we should backpack in there and just set up
- 2:39Speaker 5: a checkpoint.
- 2:40Speaker 4: That is a great, great idea. We did my family
- 2:42Speaker 4: and I did that last year. At Sunlight Lake and
- 2:46Speaker 4: watched all the runners come through. We stay up until
- 2:48Speaker 4: like midnight.
- 2:49Speaker 5: Is that what lit the fire for you? No, like
- 2:53Speaker 5: I should be out there.
- 2:55Speaker 4: I paced the year prior to that, and that got me.
- 3:00Speaker 4: I'm pretty excited to do it.
- 3:01Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 3:02Speaker 1: I feel like I could pack in there with the
- 3:04Speaker 1: old steel chainsaws and help out a lot of the
- 3:09Speaker 1: runners there, because there's a lot of blowdown in that race. Really, Yeah,
- 3:16Speaker 1: miles through that country.
- 3:18Speaker 4: Oh, I think they have it. Well, I haven't heard that,
- 3:21Speaker 4: but it might be a thing. Well.
- 3:23Speaker 1: Randall's brother he did a pre run and.
- 3:27Speaker 5: He did like sixty miles like a couple of weeks
- 3:31Speaker 5: before the race to just check out part of the course.
- 3:33Speaker 4: And because he was running it.
- 3:35Speaker 5: Yeah, but then he got into a horrific bicycle accident
- 3:38Speaker 5: and destroyed his arm. But he did run into a
- 3:42Speaker 5: lot of blowdown on that shakeout run, So I can't
- 3:47Speaker 5: say if he was officially on the course at that
- 3:49Speaker 5: point in time. The navigation skills are questionable at best,
- 3:53Speaker 5: but he did encounter blowdowns on that run.
- 3:56Speaker 1: I did sit with him on the couch while he
- 3:57Speaker 1: just destroyed like four pizzas by himself.
- 4:01Speaker 4: Yeah, which was cool. To see.
- 4:03Speaker 5: Yeah, we just got back from the rodeo.
- 4:05Speaker 1: Yeah he was being I mean, yeah, he was having
- 4:07Speaker 1: a great time.
- 4:08Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:08Speaker 2: Any other resolutions in the room besides Yanni's making a
- 4:11Speaker 2: big old run up a mountain Corey.
- 4:15Speaker 6: I mean, I'm hoping to help deplete the predator population
- 4:18Speaker 6: in Region one of Montana. Hopefully when this podcast comes
- 4:24Speaker 6: out on the second, I'll have a couple down, a
- 4:26Speaker 6: couple of wolves down.
- 4:29Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm not reaching.
- 4:29Speaker 2: Too far into twenty twenty five.
- 4:31Speaker 6: Hopefully by the first week I have my first.
- 4:33Speaker 5: Wolf in the back of the truck.
- 4:35Speaker 2: Yeah. I want to start creating a history with a
- 4:38Speaker 2: place that I hunt. Ever since I moved to Montana,
- 4:41Speaker 2: I don't have a place that I've went back to
- 4:43Speaker 2: more than two consecutive years, and that kind of disappoints
- 4:47Speaker 2: me that looking back at like when I'd hunt the
- 4:49Speaker 2: same property when I lived in South Dakota, like for
- 4:52Speaker 2: five or six straight years, sometimes a decade in some cases.
- 4:55Speaker 2: You'd like it to know bucks and spots, and you'd
- 4:59Speaker 2: like really create relationship with the place, and I haven't
- 5:01Speaker 2: had that since I moved out here, So I need
- 5:03Speaker 2: to start finding a place. It's like that's my spot.
- 5:06Speaker 2: That's a spot I go to every year and I
- 5:09Speaker 2: think next year it begins. Is like when I find
- 5:11Speaker 2: the place that I go to for the third consecutive
- 5:14Speaker 2: year and then that all of a sudden becomes a
- 5:17Speaker 2: place in a decade from now that I'm still going
- 5:19Speaker 2: to to haunt.
- 5:20Speaker 5: So to clarify, are you still looking for that spot
- 5:22Speaker 5: or might you go back to one of the spots.
- 5:25Speaker 2: I have some spots in mind, but I'd also like
- 5:27Speaker 2: love to start, you know, a new spot, and find
- 5:30Speaker 2: a place this coming year that I think could be
- 5:32Speaker 2: that kind of spot. So I'm just like missing missing
- 5:36Speaker 2: a thing in my fall where I really deeply know
- 5:40Speaker 2: a place and I want that back.
- 5:42Speaker 4: It's lovely, I hear you. I hear it because it's
- 5:45Speaker 4: good to have both, because I think there's a lot
- 5:48Speaker 4: of credit to give to someone that doesn't hunt more
- 5:51Speaker 4: than a year or two in the same spot, because
- 5:54Speaker 4: you're forced to learn new places and be successful in
- 5:58Speaker 4: new places. But you can have both, Yeah, you can
- 6:02Speaker 4: definitely have both. And I love going back to a
- 6:04Speaker 4: spot you know that I've been to, and I know
- 6:07Speaker 4: it's it's more casual. It takes away some of the
- 6:10Speaker 4: stress for me.
- 6:11Speaker 1: No, that's true. But it is a crutch though too.
- 6:14Speaker 1: So like if you're the person who's like, well, our
- 6:18Speaker 1: family hunting camp is this and that's my week of hunting,
- 6:22Speaker 1: there's there's It puts some limitations on your effectiveness as
- 6:26Speaker 1: a hunter because, like you just you got to be
- 6:30Speaker 1: challenged with you know, the figuring stuff out as you go.
- 6:35Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, listen, I think it made me a better hunter.
- 6:38Speaker 2: But I want a spot. That's my spot now and
- 6:40Speaker 2: I haven't had that living in Montana yet. Next year
- 6:42Speaker 2: it starts, Randall, call any resolutions before we start tackling
- 6:46Speaker 2: these questions.
- 6:49Speaker 1: Well, you want to jump back to the Edmund Fitzgerald
- 6:51Speaker 1: porter here.
- 6:54Speaker 5: There's a tremendous amount of oxidation around the well.
- 6:57Speaker 1: I would I want to know, like, oh, I think
- 6:59Speaker 1: this be like the best gimmick in the world. So
- 7:02Speaker 1: for folks who don't know, the Edmund Fitzgerald sunk okay,
- 7:07Speaker 1: and it's a big rusty hulk and the cap on
- 7:11Speaker 1: the beer bottle rusted all the way around. That was
- 7:15Speaker 1: like part of the flavor profile. We got those beers
- 7:19Speaker 1: a couple of years ago. I think I'm real sitting Yeah,
- 7:21Speaker 1: oh yeah.
- 7:22Speaker 5: They came into a freighter from the Great Lakes.
- 7:24Speaker 1: Yeah, they have to spend a year underwater in order
- 7:27Speaker 1: to be sold.
- 7:28Speaker 4: Like I'm in, I'm in.
- 7:32Speaker 1: So like hunting related things, I need to kind of
- 7:39Speaker 1: came to the conclusion this year that my Montana mule
- 7:42Speaker 1: deer spot is just like it needs to be burned.
- 7:46Speaker 1: The habitat is wrong at this point to where it
- 7:51Speaker 1: used to be. You know, it was hard to intercept
- 7:54Speaker 1: Muldier in there, but when you did, they were big.
- 7:56Speaker 1: Now it's like kind of like, oh, oh my god,
- 8:00Speaker 1: there's a deer in here, and it's a it's a
- 8:04Speaker 1: hard place. So I need to start expanding and doing
- 8:08Speaker 1: some some summertime exploration of some other spots, which I just.
- 8:15Speaker 7: When you're gonna say you'd burn it, appreciate habitat management there,
- 8:26Speaker 7: so that that would be one thing.
- 8:27Speaker 1: And he did go find know a new good mule
- 8:32Speaker 1: deer zone and then uh man.
- 8:35Speaker 2: Just.
- 8:37Speaker 1: Going through cases of shells on the shotgun side of
- 8:40Speaker 1: things over the summer, just shooting more in general center
- 8:47Speaker 1: fire as well. But that's just got to be a
- 8:50Speaker 1: part of the program. And you know, schedules get so
- 8:52Speaker 1: jacked up it's hard to prioritize this stuff, but man,
- 8:56Speaker 1: does it pay dividends. So and then getting back on
- 9:00Speaker 1: just like a really consistent dog training schedule. These dogs
- 9:05Speaker 1: benefit so much from that consistency. And that's a hard
- 9:09Speaker 1: thing to pull off with the type of travel that
- 9:12Speaker 1: we do too.
- 9:13Speaker 3: But I.
- 9:16Speaker 1: Can still do better.
- 9:17Speaker 3: What is going well in your life?
- 9:18Speaker 4: I wear.
- 9:21Speaker 2: It's gonna turn this thing around.
- 9:23Speaker 5: The dog training.
- 9:25Speaker 1: I wear the same clothing like three days a week.
- 9:29Speaker 1: I can make that four days a week and get
- 9:31Speaker 1: more dog training, you know, sacrifices. I'm getting to be
- 9:35Speaker 1: that way with age easy, Like, don't wash pants now
- 9:39Speaker 1: for weeks on end.
- 9:40Speaker 2: I'm like this, I supposed to wash jeans very often.
- 9:43Speaker 4: I don't know when the last time that shirt was washed.
- 9:45Speaker 1: Yeah, well I beat it up, throw on some pitstick. Yeah,
- 9:49Speaker 1: I swapped out the interior shirt here.
- 9:52Speaker 4: Yeah, that I do more often.
- 9:54Speaker 2: Random, What do you have to add?
- 9:57Speaker 3: I don't know. I just I need to stop lying
- 10:01Speaker 3: around me.
- 10:04Speaker 5: With that starts with myself. Actually, in all honesty, I
- 10:08Speaker 5: need to I need to shoot my rifle lot more.
- 10:10Speaker 5: I used to be in the habit of shooting, you know,
- 10:13Speaker 5: a couple of thousand rounds and the center fire in
- 10:17Speaker 5: a year, And this past year was probably the worst
- 10:20Speaker 5: year for shooting that I've had, just in terms of volume.
- 10:23Speaker 5: And you know, there's nothing like just good old practice
- 10:28Speaker 5: to make you feel like you're ready when the fall
- 10:30Speaker 5: rolls around twenty five.
- 10:32Speaker 4: Did the lack of practice affect your hunt? Did you
- 10:35Speaker 4: have a miss this year?
- 10:38Speaker 5: Uh?
- 10:39Speaker 3: Yes, but I don't know that practice would have.
- 10:41Speaker 5: It was a very bad situation just to rush. But yeah,
- 10:46Speaker 5: I just like I got into I was like getting
- 10:48Speaker 5: all my stuff ready and I you know, putting my
- 10:50Speaker 5: rifle in the truck, and I'm like, man, I I
- 10:54Speaker 5: should shoot more. I used to shoot a lot, like
- 10:58Speaker 5: literally burning out barrels and rebarreling rifles.
- 11:01Speaker 3: But you know, work just gets.
- 11:04Speaker 5: In the way. Family, all sorts, commitments. Yeah, the dogs,
- 11:10Speaker 5: they're just always trying to get my attention and they
- 11:12Speaker 5: don't like shooting rifles.
- 11:13Speaker 3: So it's tough.
- 11:14Speaker 5: But I'm gonna be more selfish this year, I guess.
- 11:17Speaker 3: Is what I'm saying.
- 11:17Speaker 4: Can you shoot at your house now?
- 11:20Speaker 3: Oh? Yes?
- 11:20Speaker 2: Oh nice shoots on his property, but not at his house.
- 11:25Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 11:25Speaker 6: It's gonna get awfully drafted if you shoot too often.
- 11:27Speaker 2: Cute, all right, we're gonna tackle some listener questions here.
- 11:31Speaker 2: We got about ten of these. First one is from James.
- 11:34Speaker 2: I'm in my forties, I live in Northeast, Ohio and
- 11:37Speaker 2: welcome by. I'm having a dad who hunted. I never
- 11:40Speaker 2: took an interest until recently. What would be your advice
- 11:44Speaker 2: for the first thing someone should do to take their
- 11:46Speaker 2: first step towards hunting white tail deer. I've shot guns
- 11:49Speaker 2: for many years as a hobby and recently took my
- 11:52Speaker 2: first archery lesson. I'm open to gun hunting or bow hunting.
- 11:56Speaker 2: To answer this question. First, here is Mark Kenyon.
- 12:00Speaker 4: Why Mark getting an all?
- 12:02Speaker 8: Right?
- 12:02Speaker 9: This is a great question and one that we hear
- 12:04Speaker 9: from folks frequently, people that are intrigued by white tailed
- 12:08Speaker 9: deer hunting but just don't know where to start. And
- 12:11Speaker 9: my number one piece of advice is to seek out
- 12:14Speaker 9: a mentor. There's so much to learn to get started
- 12:17Speaker 9: as a deer hunter. There are so many different things
- 12:19Speaker 9: about deer behavior, deer habitat, hunting strategy. You can get
- 12:24Speaker 9: some of that from podcasts and videos of which we
- 12:26Speaker 9: have plenty of metator you can read about these things
- 12:29Speaker 9: and magazines and web articles. But the single best way
- 12:33Speaker 9: you can learn is to actually find a real life
- 12:36Speaker 9: person who can answer your questions, who can maybe take
- 12:39Speaker 9: you out there in the field with them and show
- 12:41Speaker 9: you some of these things firsthand. And there is a
- 12:43Speaker 9: terrific program to help you find a mentor, and that
- 12:46Speaker 9: is called the Field to Fork program is put on
- 12:49Speaker 9: by the National Deer Association.
- 12:51Speaker 3: You can sign up.
- 12:52Speaker 9: To be connected with mentors like this through their program
- 12:56Speaker 9: and to possibly go through this incredible educational experience. If
- 12:59Speaker 9: you go to your association dot com slash field to
- 13:03Speaker 9: Fork that's f I E L D dash t O
- 13:07Speaker 9: dash fork. Go to that website, do the new hunter survey,
- 13:12Speaker 9: see who they connect you with. Be a part of
- 13:14Speaker 9: that program if you can. There's also a Deer Hunting
- 13:16Speaker 9: one oh one online course you can participate in through
- 13:19Speaker 9: that program that will definitely give you some of those
- 13:21Speaker 9: building blocks to get started.
- 13:23Speaker 3: Good luck.
- 13:24Speaker 2: That thorough answer is why Mark Kenyon got to go first, Yanni.
- 13:27Speaker 2: But what would you like to add?
- 13:28Speaker 4: It's pretty solid. It's pretty solid. Now that I heard it,
- 13:31Speaker 4: I might have to retract my earlier statement.
- 13:34Speaker 5: The seriousness of tone in that in that short clip,
- 13:37Speaker 5: I think, really is it odds with the mood in
- 13:40Speaker 5: this room right now. So I'm just feeling a little conflicted.
- 13:44Speaker 4: About Art doesn't want you to have fun when you're
- 13:45Speaker 4: out there. White tail.
- 13:48Speaker 1: Well, I tell this folk, I mean, Northeast Ohio is
- 13:51Speaker 1: a great play. I mean, you have a short it's
- 13:55Speaker 1: a short range weapon state, right, so it's a straight
- 13:59Speaker 1: wall car tread if you want to shoot center fire,
- 14:02Speaker 1: but you can. There's a shotgun, season, muzzleloader, season.
- 14:07Speaker 3: Man cross pos.
- 14:09Speaker 1: You want to own a shotgun, you got spring Turkey.
- 14:12Speaker 1: That's big Turkey state. Lots of grouse and you can
- 14:17Speaker 1: shoot a deer with with a shotgun there, so barrier
- 14:20Speaker 1: to entry is pretty low. Lots of lots of cool,
- 14:24Speaker 1: cool stuff in Northeast Ohio.
- 14:26Speaker 2: I got two piece of advice for James. First one
- 14:28Speaker 2: would be Randall Williams is from Ohio, so reach out
- 14:30Speaker 2: to him. He'll tell you all his spots, give you
- 14:33Speaker 2: all his connections.
- 14:35Speaker 3: Opposite corners of the state.
- 14:37Speaker 2: Though it doesn't matter salty Chile spaghetti.
- 14:40Speaker 5: I think. I think if you, if you want to
- 14:43Speaker 5: kill a deer in Ohio, find a place where you
- 14:46Speaker 5: are allowed to hunt. And at least when I was
- 14:49Speaker 5: growing up by a crossbow go buy a Barnett Rhino
- 14:53Speaker 5: or whatever the entry level crossbow is these days, and
- 14:57Speaker 5: that's how we figured things out.
- 15:00Speaker 3: It's a lot of deer in Ohio.
- 15:01Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I just saw a giant two hundred plus
- 15:05Speaker 1: inched buck just got whacked on public land in Ohio.
- 15:10Speaker 2: It's a good state. I'd like. I've never hunted Ohio.
- 15:12Speaker 2: I've always wanted to hunt Ohio, but the public land
- 15:15Speaker 2: in that part of the country hunts a lot bigger
- 15:17Speaker 2: than other places because you have these rolling hills that
- 15:20Speaker 2: are really timbered. So there's a lot of opportunities.
- 15:23Speaker 1: Oh, explain, hunts big. That's a great hunting phrase.
- 15:27Speaker 2: Hunting big would be like if you had two eighty
- 15:29Speaker 2: acre parcels, one of them was seventy acres of corn
- 15:33Speaker 2: with ten acres of timber and slew grass that are
- 15:37Speaker 2: flat that hunts small, Whereas if you had eighty acres
- 15:41Speaker 2: of rolling hills with creek bottoms, that would hunt big.
- 15:46Speaker 2: You feel like you don't see everything when you're hunting
- 15:49Speaker 2: that eighty acres versus if you're hunting the eighty acres
- 15:51Speaker 2: that's all cornfield and a little bit of slew and timber.
- 15:55Speaker 2: So Ohio I think a lot of the public land
- 15:58Speaker 2: there hunts bigger than other parts of the Midwest. Here's
- 16:02Speaker 2: the other thing I'd say to James. As someone who
- 16:03Speaker 2: picked up a new hobby during the pandemic, which was
- 16:06Speaker 2: rock counting, I learned so much of what I know now,
- 16:10Speaker 2: or like gained a foundational level of knowledge just through
- 16:13Speaker 2: watching YouTube videos a lot and a lot of YouTube videos,
- 16:16Speaker 2: and deer hunting is no different.
- 16:19Speaker 1: You're not going to be young because, like you couldn't
- 16:21Speaker 1: identify a rock before, you can find the Internet held
- 16:24Speaker 1: the tube as well.
- 16:26Speaker 2: I mean, it sure got a lot easier. The barrier
- 16:28Speaker 2: to entry is much.
- 16:30Speaker 1: Always run away from you. You couldn't figure out how
- 16:33Speaker 1: to where to find them.
- 16:34Speaker 2: Uh huh, So James, uh, YouTube is going to help
- 16:38Speaker 2: you out. It's probably not going to be the reason
- 16:39Speaker 2: you kill a deer, but you'll you'll find a lot
- 16:42Speaker 2: of relatable content there from meat Eater and others. Anybody
- 16:46Speaker 2: else have any advice for James?
- 16:49Speaker 6: I mean, finding a mentor is huge. But if you're
- 16:51Speaker 6: struggling to find a mentor or you know, schedules don't align,
- 16:55Speaker 6: just go out go hunting. You'll make mistakes, but you'll.
- 16:59Speaker 3: Got to put yourself out there.
- 17:01Speaker 5: That's right.
- 17:02Speaker 4: Just find a spot so that there's deer everywhere. Find
- 17:05Speaker 4: a spot you know you can hunt legally and learn it.
- 17:10Speaker 4: Learn that landscape, learn that property, whatever it is. Maybe
- 17:14Speaker 4: go knock on some doors. You can get yourself a
- 17:16Speaker 4: spot where you don't have to have any competition. But yeah,
- 17:20Speaker 4: I think learning the landscape really helps people be successful.
- 17:25Speaker 1: And don't think that you need to dedicate whole days.
- 17:28Speaker 1: Like whole days and multiple days in a row are fantastic,
- 17:33Speaker 1: but those are hard to come by. So if you
- 17:35Speaker 1: can find a spot that's close to you where you
- 17:38Speaker 1: can kind of eliminate that like, oh, it's not worth
- 17:41Speaker 1: going out type of mentality. Man, you can learn so
- 17:46Speaker 1: much by those fifteen minute, twenty minute hour long sessions
- 17:52Speaker 1: where you know it's like, sure you got to you know,
- 17:55Speaker 1: it could be home washing clothes or something.
- 17:57Speaker 5: But we know you don't need to do that very often.
- 18:00Speaker 1: Yeah, we already covered that.
- 18:01Speaker 2: All right, James is gonna kill a big old buck
- 18:03Speaker 2: in twenty twenty five. Here's the next question. This is
- 18:06Speaker 2: from Joe. For those with kids, what are your go
- 18:09Speaker 2: to places to getting quality youth hunting base layers and
- 18:13Speaker 2: outerwear for cold weather hunts. We put our two fathers
- 18:17Speaker 2: on this side of the table. They even dressed the
- 18:19Speaker 2: same today.
- 18:20Speaker 1: They just got back from an audition to be the
- 18:22Speaker 1: next Brownie paper towel man.
- 18:25Speaker 4: Some great dad jokes too.
- 18:27Speaker 2: We go, Yanni, Corey, how do you outfit your kids
- 18:31Speaker 2: when you're going out hunting or just doing anything.
- 18:33Speaker 3: In cold letthers?
- 18:34Speaker 4: You know, I'll be honest and that, you know, I
- 18:38Speaker 4: get a pretty steep discount with the old first light.
- 18:42Speaker 4: And even one of my girls were they make an
- 18:46Speaker 4: extra extra small in women two x small I believe so.
- 18:50Speaker 4: Oh and so even when they were super small, we
- 18:53Speaker 4: could fit them into that, you know, and then we
- 18:56Speaker 4: just did the hand me down thing as we grew
- 18:58Speaker 4: up into them. So that's one way to do it.
- 19:01Speaker 4: I mean, obviously you're getting the highest quality of youth,
- 19:05Speaker 4: but that's you know, it can be expensive. I think
- 19:08Speaker 4: you can do uh an ari I I mean these
- 19:14Speaker 4: days synthetic bass layers. I mean, let's be honest, like
- 19:18Speaker 4: it's if it's polyester's polyester, right, you can go get
- 19:21Speaker 4: some knockoff stuff at Target. Probably if it's not cotton,
- 19:26Speaker 4: you're probably gonna get pretty close to similar benefits from
- 19:29Speaker 4: buying super expensive synthetic bass layers, and it's gonna get
- 19:32Speaker 4: the job done for you. Then when your kids trash
- 19:34Speaker 4: it or grow out of it, you're not out a
- 19:36Speaker 4: bunch of money.
- 19:37Speaker 2: Yeah, Corey, I don't know if Marshall's been on too
- 19:39Speaker 2: many haunts yet, but I assume he's done some skiing
- 19:42Speaker 2: with you. How do you get him dressed for those?
- 19:45Speaker 6: Yeah, you kind of took the answer right out of
- 19:47Speaker 6: my mouth.
- 19:47Speaker 1: That was a weird way of saying skiing. What wash?
- 19:50Speaker 1: Do you not like skiing?
- 19:51Speaker 2: What's your deal like skiing? I didn't think I said
- 19:53Speaker 2: it weird skiing along with you? Yeah?
- 19:57Speaker 6: No, ski anyway?
- 19:59Speaker 2: I competent, I'm not. I don't feel like I'm gonna
- 20:01Speaker 2: go out there and do a green and break my arm.
- 20:03Speaker 2: So that's that's the sweet spot for me.
- 20:06Speaker 6: I mean, my kid's only six. We've gone on one
- 20:09Speaker 6: spring turkey hunting, multiple fall and winter squirrel hunts, so actually, yeah,
- 20:14Speaker 6: wearing ski gear is what we've been doing. I mean,
- 20:17Speaker 6: just staying warm is so crucial, and then having two,
- 20:22Speaker 6: if not three, backup pairs of clothes because inevitably they're
- 20:25Speaker 6: getting wet and uncomfortable, so having backup boots, socks, gloves,
- 20:30Speaker 6: just to keep them out there as long as you
- 20:32Speaker 6: can is what I do. And then for like bass layers, man,
- 20:36Speaker 6: we just go to Costco and get the good, solid
- 20:39Speaker 6: synthetic stuff for nine dollars.
- 20:42Speaker 2: I've ran into Corey twice at Costco. If I was
- 20:44Speaker 2: trying to pattern him, to assassinate him, I just go
- 20:49Speaker 2: to Costco and then Winco because I know he goes
- 20:52Speaker 2: to Winco as well.
- 20:53Speaker 6: Meet me in the food court line at about eleven
- 20:56Speaker 6: ond Yeah, and I assume with ski gear they make
- 20:59Speaker 6: that for kids of like all sizes, just like little tykes,
- 21:03Speaker 6: oh yeah, to teens yep, little guys. Yeah, so warm
- 21:06Speaker 6: and comfy.
- 21:07Speaker 2: Anything else to add from the fatherless people in the room, goodwill, Well,
- 21:13Speaker 2: I have a father, Thank you very much. I'm sorry
- 21:16Speaker 2: the childless the childless people. Of course, you have a father.
- 21:20Speaker 5: What do you think cal if you're gonna dress up
- 21:22Speaker 5: a little kid?
- 21:23Speaker 4: Well, remember the question is where, where where do you
- 21:27Speaker 4: find them? Well? Good?
- 21:28Speaker 1: Yeah, thank you randall. So a ton of my hunting
- 21:32Speaker 1: stuff came from the Saint Vincent to Paul Church thrift store,
- 21:38Speaker 1: and my grandma worked at and so you know, should
- 21:42Speaker 1: cherry pick the fifty wool items for us? I mean yeah,
- 21:50Speaker 1: I mean that's that's the stuff to grab, especially if
- 21:53Speaker 1: folks are gonna if they're really hard on stuff, or
- 21:57Speaker 1: if they're going to grow out of it, right, I
- 21:59Speaker 1: mean go recycled.
- 22:01Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 22:01Speaker 5: I just say, find a well to do family with
- 22:05Speaker 5: kids slightly older than yours and get their hand me
- 22:08Speaker 5: downs and pattern kids are always getting made, you know,
- 22:12Speaker 5: and it's just like you find an age class slightly
- 22:14Speaker 5: about yours and position yourself to benefit from.
- 22:18Speaker 4: That that work. We've gotten a lot of hand me
- 22:21Speaker 4: downs from families.
- 22:22Speaker 3: That for some.
- 22:25Speaker 5: Advice from the childless side of the room here, or.
- 22:27Speaker 2: Just don't have kids like me, callan Randall. Here's the
- 22:33Speaker 2: next question. This is from Adam What qualities should I
- 22:38Speaker 2: look for when picking boots to hunt elk? And Wyoming?
- 22:41Speaker 2: What are your go to boots for a western elk hunt?
- 22:45Speaker 2: To answer this question here is Jason Phelps.
- 22:48Speaker 8: He's probably should I look for when picking boots to
- 22:51Speaker 8: elk hunt Wyoming? And then what are my go to
- 22:53Speaker 8: boots on a western elk hunt? So the qualities I'm
- 22:56Speaker 8: looking for, it really depends on where you're hunting, what
- 22:57Speaker 8: type of hunt you've gotten, and really how tough your
- 22:59Speaker 8: feet are. Everybody's a little bit different and everybody's foot
- 23:02Speaker 8: shapes a little bit different. So a boot that may
- 23:04Speaker 8: work perfect for me, may not work for you, may
- 23:07Speaker 8: not work for somebody else. So you need to try
- 23:09Speaker 8: all these boots on number one, they need to fit.
- 23:11Speaker 8: So that's one quality you need to have. You need
- 23:14Speaker 8: to fit your heel pocket based on what insoles you have.
- 23:17Speaker 8: You need to make sure you don't get hotspots on
- 23:19Speaker 8: steep stuff down and uphill. But then as far as
- 23:23Speaker 8: where are you hunting, If you're above tree line and
- 23:25Speaker 8: the steep stuff, you know, hunting above the you know
- 23:27Speaker 8: the goats and you know mountain goats and sheep, then
- 23:30Speaker 8: you're gonna want a booth that's typically stiffer. You're gonna
- 23:33Speaker 8: want a boot that's typically taller. Is you put more
- 23:36Speaker 8: stress on your feet, you're gonna And then if I'm
- 23:38Speaker 8: hunting the sage brush maybe flatter stuff in Wyoming, I'm
- 23:41Speaker 8: gonna go for a boot that's more flexible, something that
- 23:44Speaker 8: you know my foot won't fatigue is quickly. And even
- 23:46Speaker 8: though I'm in a more flexible boot, versus if you
- 23:48Speaker 8: take that flexible boot up high and the steep stuff
- 23:52Speaker 8: at your foot may fatigue throughout the hunt. And then
- 23:54Speaker 8: as far as what are my specific go to boots
- 23:56Speaker 8: on a western el cut, I found that the Crispy
- 23:59Speaker 8: bricks All line of boots works best. So they've got
- 24:03Speaker 8: like a four flex rating uninsulated boot I wear on
- 24:06Speaker 8: a lot of my September hunts. You know, went on
- 24:08Speaker 8: a sheep hunt this year. I chose their Pro which
- 24:12Speaker 8: is two inches taller and a stiffer you know sol
- 24:16Speaker 8: on that boot, so I didn't flex as much for
- 24:18Speaker 8: the steep stuff. So for me, Krispy Brickstall and all
- 24:21Speaker 8: those boots work really well. But really, you got to
- 24:23Speaker 8: go try boots on, make sure they fit your foot,
- 24:26Speaker 8: make sure they're comfortable, and uh, that's my recommendation on
- 24:29Speaker 8: western elk cutting boots.
- 24:31Speaker 2: Johanni, you tackle this one after Jason. What do you
- 24:34Speaker 2: have to add about finding the right boots for an
- 24:36Speaker 2: elk hunt?
- 24:38Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean Jason covered it very well there. They
- 24:43Speaker 4: I would add is oftentimes, like an archery season, when
- 24:48Speaker 4: I know I'm gonna have to be sneaky because I
- 24:50Speaker 4: want to get in close for an archery shot is
- 24:54Speaker 4: that the boots need to perform both in hiking, you know,
- 24:58Speaker 4: climb aircross mountains, then also in those last fifty yards
- 25:01Speaker 4: when you're getting in closed and so I'll have to
- 25:03Speaker 4: go with a boot that is kind of under not undersize,
- 25:08Speaker 4: but it's not what you consider like a mount big
- 25:11Speaker 4: mountain boot, right because I need it to be soft
- 25:14Speaker 4: enough so that at the end when it's go time,
- 25:17Speaker 4: I can maybe run a little bit very comfortably. I
- 25:20Speaker 4: can be very sneaky and quiet. Usually the bigger the
- 25:23Speaker 4: boots get, the burlier they get, the soul gets stiffer.
- 25:26Speaker 4: The stiffer boot is, the noisier the boot is. There's
- 25:30Speaker 4: nothing like sneaking through the woods and a pair of
- 25:32Speaker 4: running shoes like the elk cannot hear you coming. So
- 25:36Speaker 4: that's something to consider. But otherwise I think Jason covered
- 25:39Speaker 4: it pretty good.
- 25:41Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean it's not even mountain like even like
- 25:44Speaker 1: right now or yesterday. Now with our current warming trend
- 25:48Speaker 1: to what we're going through, which is so annoying. Walking
- 25:52Speaker 1: through fields that are frozen with a full shank stiff
- 25:57Speaker 1: mountain boot is very unpleasant because there's just no flex
- 26:01Speaker 1: in that boot. But you take that boot onto steep terrain,
- 26:06Speaker 1: shale rock and it's the best it's your it's your
- 26:09Speaker 1: best friend. So you do having a little bit of
- 26:13Speaker 1: a quiver some options throughout your season is great. And yeah,
- 26:20Speaker 1: I would say it'd be don't automatically assume that you
- 26:27Speaker 1: need like a fully lined boot, like a gore Tex liner,
- 26:33Speaker 1: because that's going to be a more expensive boot, or
- 26:36Speaker 1: an insulated boot is gonna you know, it's going to
- 26:42Speaker 1: perform well only in a specific range of temperatures. So
- 26:48Speaker 1: if you're hunting in a warm day, then you're gonna
- 26:51Speaker 1: sweat that boot out from the inside and it's it's
- 26:54Speaker 1: not going to perform well for you. So I would
- 26:59Speaker 1: really cause folks to really analyze their season before they
- 27:05Speaker 1: go into an insulated boot.
- 27:08Speaker 4: I sure do. And then.
- 27:13Speaker 1: Yeah, the you know, there's a everybody's like what is
- 27:16Speaker 1: the boot? And people have very different feet, just like
- 27:20Speaker 1: your fingerprints. So there's a gajillion boot companies out there
- 27:25Speaker 1: for a reason. They all have different lasts, which is
- 27:29Speaker 1: like the footbed form of the boot, and and that's
- 27:34Speaker 1: because people have different feet. So don't think that just
- 27:39Speaker 1: because you need a hunting boot, you need to look
- 27:42Speaker 1: at hunting boot companies. If you're not finding success in
- 27:45Speaker 1: hunting boot companies, you know, go look at the Loas
- 27:48Speaker 1: and the Scarpas and and that mountaineering world too. You know,
- 27:55Speaker 1: these companies exist for a reason.
- 27:57Speaker 6: So Randall Corey, anything to add footbeds, I mean, yeah,
- 28:03Speaker 6: gets you a good boot, but do not skimp on
- 28:05Speaker 6: solid footbeds.
- 28:07Speaker 3: That you get.
- 28:08Speaker 2: That's not very that's not a real expensive upgrade either.
- 28:11Speaker 6: No. I mean you could spend fifty to one hundred
- 28:14Speaker 6: bucks easily with some over the counter stuff, or just
- 28:17Speaker 6: go to your local ARII or whatever, or you could
- 28:19Speaker 6: get some custom ones that might run you a couple
- 28:21Speaker 6: hundred dollars. But anything is going to be better than
- 28:23Speaker 6: what you buy. It's pretty sad you spend five hundred
- 28:26Speaker 6: bucks on a boot and the footbed is garbage. So
- 28:29Speaker 6: make sure you get a better footbed.
- 28:31Speaker 5: I would only add that, Uh, I think the more
- 28:37Speaker 5: I I guess like over time, I've come to prefer
- 28:42Speaker 5: a lighter and lighter boot, just because heavy boots wear
- 28:45Speaker 5: you out and you like can't wait to get them off.
- 28:50Speaker 5: So if you don't need something like super high and
- 28:52Speaker 5: super stiff, I think like things in the lighter end
- 28:56Speaker 5: of you know, there's I have like a spectrum of boots,
- 29:01Speaker 5: but I often find myself if I can get away
- 29:03Speaker 5: from it, going with like a lighter option, just because
- 29:06Speaker 5: it's more comfortable and.
- 29:09Speaker 3: You never want to take them off.
- 29:11Speaker 2: The only thing I'd add to this is I've had
- 29:13Speaker 2: really bad luck ordering hunting boots online. As far as
- 29:16Speaker 2: sizing goes, it seems that more than casual footwear or
- 29:20Speaker 2: tennis shoes or dress shoes, hunting shoes or bass slides, yeah,
- 29:26Speaker 2: any of that, the sizing is much more variable. And
- 29:30Speaker 2: so if you can find a boot that you can
- 29:32Speaker 2: go try on in person, it'll make your life easier
- 29:35Speaker 2: than having to order something online and be prepared to
- 29:39Speaker 2: then make a couple returns.
- 29:41Speaker 4: You ha to piggyback on Randall's point there, and Jason
- 29:44Speaker 4: even mentioned it, like if you're hunting elk above the
- 29:46Speaker 4: mountain goats, that happens to like zero point five percent
- 29:50Speaker 4: of the elk hunters in our country annually. It's just
- 29:53Speaker 4: not a thing usually where you're hunting above the mountain goats,
- 29:57Speaker 4: so you don't need boots that are made for that
- 30:00Speaker 4: alpine shale, super rocky landscape. Because you're just not there
- 30:06Speaker 4: that much. The elk are usually in the timber.
- 30:09Speaker 2: Moving on, next question is from Christa. My family eats
- 30:13Speaker 2: a lot of ground venison, with burgers, tacos, and chili
- 30:16Speaker 2: firmly in our rotation. What are some other weaknight meals
- 30:20Speaker 2: with ground meat that are easy, tasty and outside of
- 30:23Speaker 2: the norm cal. What could you recommend to Christa?
- 30:27Speaker 4: Larb?
- 30:29Speaker 1: Hmmm, that's good stuff.
- 30:31Speaker 2: What larb is really outside of the norm carry?
- 30:35Speaker 1: I mean it's it's just finely chopped or ground meat.
- 30:39Speaker 4: And what is it title?
- 30:41Speaker 1: Yeah, so you know, make like let us wrap tacos,
- 30:44Speaker 1: make a little sauce that's totally a winter and it's
- 30:49Speaker 1: you know, it's a little sweet ginger garlicky, little red
- 30:56Speaker 1: chili in there.
- 30:58Speaker 4: That's to do some larb tomorrow ground pulled out. I
- 31:02Speaker 4: needed an idea. There we go.
- 31:03Speaker 2: Okay, someone else makes some recommendations for Christa and Yanni.
- 31:07Speaker 5: We we have a delightful uh North African meatball recipe.
- 31:13Speaker 3: From the New York Times. Oh and we just had
- 31:15Speaker 3: it last night.
- 31:17Speaker 5: Little couscous but they're like these little meatballs and kind
- 31:20Speaker 5: of a it's almost like a I don't know, it's
- 31:22Speaker 5: almost like a you've had those, haven't you.
- 31:24Speaker 4: No.
- 31:26Speaker 2: I put a lot of trust into the New York
- 31:27Speaker 2: Times recipes. I haven't been left solid.
- 31:30Speaker 5: The New York Times recipes will not they will not
- 31:33Speaker 5: lead you astray. But yeah, this this North African meatball thing.
- 31:36Speaker 2: Uh. And to be clear, if you're new to cooking
- 31:40Speaker 2: wild game, if you find a recipe from The New
- 31:42Speaker 2: York Times, you can just you know, use venison place
- 31:45Speaker 2: of ground beef. Yeah, and and basically anything.
- 31:48Speaker 5: We'll make like whole sheet like cookie sheets of these
- 31:51Speaker 5: meatballs and then make the sauce and then Phillip gallon
- 31:55Speaker 5: baggies with meatballs and sauce and freeze them.
- 31:57Speaker 4: Yeah, and so royal the meatballs to cook them.
- 32:00Speaker 5: Yes, yeah, but yeah, it's like last night we had
- 32:05Speaker 5: people over for dinner, and we didn't tell them that
- 32:07Speaker 5: would pull these out of the freezer and just simply
- 32:09Speaker 5: reheated them, But we did and they loved it.
- 32:11Speaker 2: In a similar not, we make a lot of pot
- 32:13Speaker 2: stickers at my house. A few times a year. We'll
- 32:16Speaker 2: set aside a Saturday, we'll just get the Wanton wrappers
- 32:19Speaker 2: that we get from Elbertsons. But I think they sell
- 32:21Speaker 2: the same exact ones at Walmart and high V whatever
- 32:24Speaker 2: your grocery store is, and that makes ground venicson go
- 32:27Speaker 2: a really long ways. We'll do a one to one
- 32:29Speaker 2: ratio of ground meat and vegetables slash mushrooms. And I
- 32:33Speaker 2: think this last time we made three hundred potstickers in
- 32:37Speaker 2: one going. And then that's a super easy freezer meal
- 32:41Speaker 2: to get out. You freeze them in whatever portion makes
- 32:43Speaker 2: sense for your family size. You get those out and
- 32:46Speaker 2: you can be serving them within fifteen fifteen minutes. And
- 32:49Speaker 2: they're just really easy to make, both like prepping them
- 32:53Speaker 2: for the freezer and coming out of the freezer. So
- 32:55Speaker 2: potstickers highly recommend YEP, and you can make them to
- 32:59Speaker 2: your liking. There's like a certain vegetable or flavor profile
- 33:02Speaker 2: that you really like or really dislike. Your potstickers can
- 33:06Speaker 2: be unique to your taste.
- 33:08Speaker 1: Basically every culture has a pot sticker too, so like
- 33:11Speaker 1: if you want to put like marinara sauce and mozzarella
- 33:14Speaker 1: in there, like, shoot, it's not that crazy.
- 33:17Speaker 2: Wantan rappers are a great vessel for just like any
- 33:20Speaker 2: meats and veggie.
- 33:22Speaker 1: We filmed a standin sticker with chef Linda here in town.
- 33:28Speaker 2: Is that hummingbird?
- 33:29Speaker 1: Yeah, kitchen.
- 33:30Speaker 2: Yeah, I've been looking to go to some of her meals.
- 33:32Speaker 4: You should do it.
- 33:33Speaker 1: It's super super cool and Linda's who she's, She's super fun.
- 33:38Speaker 1: But that should be on the media YouTube channel. And
- 33:40Speaker 1: we do do we do do Wanton's January fourteenth.
- 33:46Speaker 6: That should be on the.
- 33:47Speaker 4: Oh son of a Gun.
- 33:48Speaker 2: There this guy here, Yanni Cory unique ground venison meals
- 33:53Speaker 2: besides burgers, tacos, and chili.
- 33:56Speaker 6: Man, it's not unique, but y'all ever had hamburger helper?
- 34:01Speaker 4: I do it without the box grew.
- 34:02Speaker 6: I made help meat, little can of like cream, a mushroom,
- 34:10Speaker 6: and then your favorite vegetable, can of corn, can of
- 34:13Speaker 6: green beans, peas, whatever, and then some noodles on top
- 34:16Speaker 6: of that.
- 34:18Speaker 4: You can call it a goulash.
- 34:21Speaker 6: Turns out yep, one pot meal.
- 34:23Speaker 5: Depending on how runny it turns out, you can lunch correct.
- 34:30Speaker 4: You know. We do a lot of meatballs too, usually
- 34:33Speaker 4: Italian flavor profile. But we do the same thing that
- 34:37Speaker 4: Randall does, is and we make hundreds and then freeze
- 34:41Speaker 4: them and usually around twenty it's is what you can
- 34:44Speaker 4: get into a leader uh vacuum seal bag. But those
- 34:48Speaker 4: are great, and so do you put sauce in there? No? No, no,
- 34:52Speaker 4: no no.
- 34:53Speaker 5: Did did we cover meat loaf?
- 34:55Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 34:55Speaker 1: I mean I assume part of this is part of this.
- 35:00Speaker 5: If I mean, if I just if it wasn't explicitly
- 35:02Speaker 5: mentioned in there, I think we should just point out
- 35:04Speaker 5: meat loaf should be celebrated.
- 35:06Speaker 4: Stuff to move and different styles of burger. You know,
- 35:09Speaker 4: oftentimes my kids like we don't like burgers anymore. I'll
- 35:12Speaker 4: be like, what about smash burgers? Oh yeah, you know,
- 35:16Speaker 4: so like okay, I'm gonna make them real thin.
- 35:20Speaker 2: On the topic of meat loaf, though, I think when
- 35:23Speaker 2: I think a meat loaf, there's like the meat loaf
- 35:24Speaker 2: my mom made, which I don't like, and then there's
- 35:28Speaker 2: like like an elevated version of meat loaf recipes you
- 35:31Speaker 2: can find online and.
- 35:32Speaker 1: Yeah, which is just using more bacon.
- 35:34Speaker 2: Yeah, it's like, you know, using some cheese and sauteed
- 35:39Speaker 2: spinach and just some other herbs and spices and and
- 35:42Speaker 2: that's like that's a unique weaknight meal.
- 35:46Speaker 3: Anybody could make it home great liftovers.
- 35:49Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I mean there's there's no end like pocket food, right, Like,
- 35:54Speaker 1: so like we're talking, so Wanton's pirogis, pasties empenadas.
- 36:02Speaker 4: I mean.
- 36:06Speaker 2: Yes, yes, in the media dot com post new recipes
- 36:11Speaker 2: every week. I bet the most common protein in those
- 36:14Speaker 2: recipes is probably ground meat. So the mediator dot com
- 36:17Speaker 2: backslash recipes you'll get all kinds of good recommendations there.
- 36:23Speaker 2: Next question, this is from Coal. I was wondering what
- 36:27Speaker 2: you think the most doable DIY big game hunt would
- 36:30Speaker 2: be out west. Some considerations would be tag attainment and
- 36:34Speaker 2: public land access. I imagine you guys are gonna have
- 36:38Speaker 2: the same answer, but I would say an analttle punt.
- 36:40Speaker 2: It takes like the least amount of gear, least amount
- 36:43Speaker 2: of time, the least amount of physical fitness. If you're
- 36:46Speaker 2: coming from the Midwest or the east of the South
- 36:49Speaker 2: and this is your first Western hunt. The tags are
- 36:52Speaker 2: like the same price or cheaper than deer tags in
- 36:55Speaker 2: a lot of these states. Public land access like these days.
- 36:59Speaker 4: I mean it used to be a thing where you
- 37:01Speaker 4: could get a bunch of prong horned tags, and now
- 37:05Speaker 4: it's like there obtainable. I mean unless you have some
- 37:10Speaker 4: private access.
- 37:11Speaker 2: What I would say to Cole is this is a
- 37:13Speaker 2: hunt you could plan for twenty twenty seven or twenty
- 37:15Speaker 2: twenty eight, but you're probably not doing a good rifle
- 37:19Speaker 2: analope hunt this coming fall.
- 37:21Speaker 5: I'm going to go with another big game option that
- 37:24Speaker 5: starts with the letter A, and that is antlerless.
- 37:27Speaker 4: Mm hmmm.
- 37:29Speaker 5: Find a cow tag, find a dough tag, often cheaper.
- 37:32Speaker 5: You're gonna have the same experience you're gonna take home there.
- 37:36Speaker 3: Yeah, you're gonna take home meat.
- 37:39Speaker 5: You're not going to feel like things are as competitive
- 37:41Speaker 5: as if you're gunning for a big Bucker Bowl. So yeah,
- 37:45Speaker 5: if you just want to go make some memories and
- 37:48Speaker 5: check out a new part of the country, I'd look
- 37:50Speaker 5: into those options. And oftentimes those tags are cheaper as well,
- 37:53Speaker 5: in addition to being more available.
- 37:56Speaker 2: And anelope and analysts have a lot higher success rate
- 38:00Speaker 2: for hunters out there. What do you guys have got
- 38:02Speaker 2: to add to.
- 38:02Speaker 4: This black bear?
- 38:05Speaker 2: Oh over the counter at a different time of year.
- 38:08Speaker 4: Yep, just made a face.
- 38:11Speaker 6: Yes, some of us don't know how to kill him,
- 38:14Speaker 6: or at least have a curse and are somehow allowed
- 38:18Speaker 6: to kill him.
- 38:18Speaker 5: Yeah, there's more of a learning curve to it, though,
- 38:20Speaker 5: I would say coming out for the first time.
- 38:23Speaker 6: A lot of states have two seasons for him. Some
- 38:25Speaker 6: regions have overabundant numbers of black bears, So save a
- 38:30Speaker 6: couple deer, go.
- 38:31Speaker 4: Shoot a black bear. Be honest, Yeah, I was gonna
- 38:35Speaker 4: go on what Randall said. I was going to just say,
- 38:38Speaker 4: go get a dough tag. You know, very doable, very attainable.
- 38:44Speaker 4: You can just drive around looking for a dough but
- 38:47Speaker 4: you can.
- 38:48Speaker 1: You can hunt your butt off too if you want
- 38:50Speaker 1: to do it. Yeah, so there's a bunch of ways
- 38:52Speaker 1: to go back country.
- 38:53Speaker 2: Call any other advice for Coal on how to plan
- 38:57Speaker 2: his first doable di y big game hunt out West.
- 39:02Speaker 1: Boy, the biggest limitation people put on themselves is time.
- 39:07Speaker 1: Give yourself time, and that's the hardest thing to acquire
- 39:12Speaker 1: in my opinion. But boy, give yourself like a full
- 39:17Speaker 1: week no matter what you do. Or more like, if
- 39:22Speaker 1: you want to do your first big game hunt and
- 39:24Speaker 1: you're like, I'm gonna take a long weekend, you're just
- 39:27Speaker 1: setting yourself up for not having a great experience. You
- 39:33Speaker 1: you can have a surprisingly good experience, but it's just
- 39:35Speaker 1: gonna be you're gonna have that clock ticking in the
- 39:39Speaker 1: back of your brain the whole time.
- 39:40Speaker 2: It seems like when you're short on time, you end
- 39:42Speaker 2: up thinking about like work or family stuff that's going on.
- 39:46Speaker 2: If you've got a full week, you'll have some extra
- 39:49Speaker 2: time built in on the beginning and end of that yep.
- 39:51Speaker 5: And if the trip starts out poorly, you can just
- 39:54Speaker 5: totally reset and you still have another three day hunt
- 39:57Speaker 5: on the back half.
- 39:58Speaker 3: Yep.
- 39:59Speaker 2: Next question from Kevin, This is a short one. What's
- 40:02Speaker 2: your go to hunting and fishing snack? To answer this one,
- 40:05Speaker 2: here is Brent Reeves.
- 40:08Speaker 5: My go to hunting snack.
- 40:10Speaker 2: I usually keep it in my side beside, and I keep.
- 40:12Speaker 10: It in an army can like this tragic and here
- 40:15Speaker 10: it is potted meat Beannie Waeney's some cheese crackers.
- 40:24Speaker 11: Now, if you won't get bold and make a meal
- 40:26Speaker 11: out of it, this is what I do. Also like vienies,
- 40:29Speaker 11: but I don't eat the when it's cold, because get
- 40:31Speaker 11: a little sav on them when that jail kind of
- 40:34Speaker 11: sticks to the weens.
- 40:35Speaker 10: But it's right here, potted meat, the cheese crackers. My
- 40:44Speaker 10: brother Stem and I ate this. Just the other day
- 40:48Speaker 10: we was running the nuts on the river.
- 40:50Speaker 11: We needed a little snack with all them finishes sapping
- 40:55Speaker 11: all the wind out there.
- 40:56Speaker 10: That's while we was out there pulling in here. It
- 40:58Speaker 10: is right here, these tras potted meat.
- 41:05Speaker 2: It's good. It's good, I believe, what a treat. You
- 41:10Speaker 2: should go watch this on YouTube because you'd get to
- 41:13Speaker 2: see Brent preparing his little lunch there. And this is
- 41:16Speaker 2: how organic that was for brand I sent an email
- 41:18Speaker 2: last night at like nine pm asking everyone to make
- 41:21Speaker 2: these videos by noon. So that was just what Brent
- 41:23Speaker 2: had on hand. This is that's truly like his favorite
- 41:26Speaker 2: hunting fish and snack. He didn't go out and then,
- 41:29Speaker 2: you know, produce this content.
- 41:31Speaker 5: We just had to go to the old army can.
- 41:33Speaker 2: That's right, Randa favorite hunting and fishing.
- 41:36Speaker 4: First, I want to know if anybody in this room
- 41:39Speaker 4: has had that meat that he just pulled out, well,
- 41:43Speaker 4: potted meat, Like there's a wide variety of can meats, okay,
- 41:46Speaker 4: because that almost looked like.
- 41:47Speaker 2: A pat ta, looked like cat food.
- 41:51Speaker 4: I don't know what that was. I mean, I enjoyed
- 41:54Speaker 4: pat a right, but I don't really know what that
- 41:57Speaker 4: what he know.
- 41:58Speaker 2: I think the other thing he was referencing with Vienna sausages, yeah, which.
- 42:02Speaker 4: I thought that was the go to in that part
- 42:04Speaker 4: of the country was uh they say, enis.
- 42:10Speaker 2: Randall go to hunting and fish and snack.
- 42:13Speaker 5: Man. Uh. This past year, I just ate a lot
- 42:16Speaker 5: of peanut butter and jellies. Like a lot of times.
- 42:19Speaker 5: A lot of times I I like, get a gallon
- 42:22Speaker 5: zip lock bag and fill it up. Oh, I'll have
- 42:24Speaker 5: some nuts, I'll have some jerky, I'll have some like
- 42:27Speaker 5: a power bar. I'll have this and that, and then
- 42:30Speaker 5: I like, just don't eat it. And I just this
- 42:32Speaker 5: year is like, I'm gonna make four peanut butter and
- 42:34Speaker 5: jellies and at any point in the day if I
- 42:37Speaker 5: get hungry, I have one and it's perfectly satiating, and
- 42:40Speaker 5: I will I'll consume all the calories I need and
- 42:43Speaker 5: I won't have to think about what I'm picking out
- 42:45Speaker 5: of the bag and whether or not I'll want to
- 42:47Speaker 5: eat it, because I always want.
- 42:48Speaker 3: To eat peanut butter and jelly.
- 42:50Speaker 2: How about you, cal.
- 42:55Speaker 1: Obviously like it's it's all dependent on situation. But Randall
- 42:59Speaker 1: got to experienced a little bit of hunting camp with
- 43:02Speaker 1: some of the crew that I grew up horse packing
- 43:06Speaker 1: with this year, and no matter what's happening, there's at
- 43:10Speaker 1: some point the little smokies that we scaled in a
- 43:19Speaker 1: pan and eat little little smokey's out of a pan
- 43:22Speaker 1: and that was always like an awesome deal.
- 43:26Speaker 4: Is that just a miniature hot dog?
- 43:28Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, exactly. You know they're cocktail weenies.
- 43:31Speaker 3: Yeah, like for making pigs in a blanket.
- 43:32Speaker 1: Yeah. And then smoked oysters. He I mean, there were
- 43:41Speaker 1: just like a thing when I was grown up, and
- 43:43Speaker 1: I still love them and occasionally I'll just have that
- 43:48Speaker 1: for dinner by myself here and you know, in a home,
- 43:52Speaker 1: in an actual.
- 43:53Speaker 4: A smoked oyster. But man, in the woods, it's just
- 43:55Speaker 4: such a mess maker. And then you got that greasy
- 43:58Speaker 4: can left over. You almost need a vessel to get
- 44:01Speaker 4: the cant and you're backpacking out of the woods.
- 44:04Speaker 1: I don't do it backpacking anymore because of that. And
- 44:08Speaker 1: it's just like, you know, you end up like packing
- 44:11Speaker 1: dirt in there to try to like soak it up,
- 44:13Speaker 1: and then you're like, well then I dumped the dirt
- 44:14Speaker 1: out and it's all a mask. You're you're correct, But yeah,
- 44:18Speaker 1: so I do. Pro bars is like a staple and
- 44:25Speaker 1: it's not something that like I really enjoy at all.
- 44:29Speaker 1: And the refrigerator bars, the what are those ones? The
- 44:35Speaker 1: they're supposed to be refrigerated, Yeah, there's a few of
- 44:38Speaker 1: them out there.
- 44:39Speaker 4: There's a Bozeman local company, is that the one you're
- 44:41Speaker 4: thinking of? They make that product. It's like called Jack
- 44:45Speaker 4: and Jane.
- 44:46Speaker 5: Or maybe I should know because I picked up those
- 44:48Speaker 5: packages from your front door and put them in your refrigerator.
- 44:50Speaker 1: Yeah, but it's like almond butter or whatever, like in
- 44:53Speaker 1: a bar, peanut butter in a bar, and those are
- 44:57Speaker 1: a big deal. And then yeah, at this point, I
- 44:59Speaker 1: just don't even mess around with like trail mixes and
- 45:04Speaker 1: stuff like that.
- 45:06Speaker 4: I'll actually gone back towards trail mix a little bit more,
- 45:10Speaker 4: but custom making it. Yeah, like going to Costco, I
- 45:13Speaker 4: get the big bag of cashew's, the big bag of cranberries,
- 45:17Speaker 4: some mango slices and that way. When I go in there,
- 45:19Speaker 4: I'm like, oh, this is all stuff that I like
- 45:21Speaker 4: that I want to consume because there's nothing worse than
- 45:23Speaker 4: looking at that trail mixing like, yeah, you're like white chocolate. Yeah,
- 45:28Speaker 4: a few.
- 45:30Speaker 2: My favorite hunting fish and snack always has been, I
- 45:33Speaker 2: think always will be our apples because it's good at
- 45:35Speaker 2: any temperature, whether it's eighty degrees or twenty degrees, and
- 45:39Speaker 2: it also keeps me regular when you're like, you know,
- 45:42Speaker 2: on a five day hunt or something like that. That's
- 45:45Speaker 2: an awful feeling when you just can't go to the bathroom.
- 45:48Speaker 2: And if you're eating apples, that's never the case. It's
- 45:50Speaker 2: a natural diuretic at least for me, so apples or
- 45:55Speaker 2: go to And then also this year, this is the
- 45:57Speaker 2: first time I had honey stinger stuff and we had
- 46:00Speaker 2: to have a bad product from honey stick. Their waffles
- 46:03Speaker 2: they're they're like energy gels. Some of them have caffeine
- 46:07Speaker 2: in them. I'm a really big fan of those, so
- 46:10Speaker 2: apples honeystinger stuff.
- 46:12Speaker 4: I sing to add to some apples too, as you
- 46:14Speaker 4: can get those Justin's peanut butter packets or hazelnut butter
- 46:18Speaker 4: packets if you need just a little more protein or something.
- 46:21Speaker 2: Yeah, it's good like at five am, and it's good
- 46:24Speaker 2: at five pm in Apple and they keep that's right,
- 46:28Speaker 2: like I said, eighty degrees or twenty degrees.
- 46:30Speaker 5: All this stuff applies to peanut butter and jelly's too.
- 46:33Speaker 1: Well, like the dark chocolate Justin's peanut butter cups. Oh yeah,
- 46:38Speaker 1: you know, I'll like.
- 46:39Speaker 4: It's an expensive item, but they are good. It is.
- 46:41Speaker 4: But like when I'm.
- 46:42Speaker 1: At night, I'm heating up my meal or whatever. I
- 46:47Speaker 1: always boil enough water for my meal, and like a
- 46:50Speaker 1: cup of tea, which could just be you know, like
- 46:54Speaker 1: one of those salt packet meals or liquid iv or
- 47:00Speaker 1: something thrown in water, but it's you know, hot flavored drink.
- 47:03Speaker 1: And then we'll have my like dark chocolate peanut butter
- 47:08Speaker 1: cup and that's like my whole whole backpacking dinner right there.
- 47:13Speaker 2: Of course, is there a universal snack you could bring
- 47:16Speaker 2: guiding that anybody would eat and enjoy?
- 47:19Speaker 5: Jerky?
- 47:21Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 47:21Speaker 6: And it also every bite reminds you while you're out
- 47:24Speaker 6: there there's a home major and I don't know the
- 47:28Speaker 6: store bought stuff's okay, Man, it's expensive these days though,
- 47:31Speaker 6: so some homemade venison jerky.
- 47:34Speaker 1: It's all these damn diet trends getting into the jerky.
- 47:37Speaker 4: World, the whole carnivor. Yes, I've been souping up the
- 47:41Speaker 4: PBNJ a little bit the last few years. And uh,
- 47:44Speaker 4: Jess Johnson, you know, from Artemis down there in Wyom,
- 47:47Speaker 4: and she turned me onto it and just do it
- 47:50Speaker 4: on a tortilla instead. Yeah, maybe you need a little
- 47:54Speaker 4: less bread in your life. Maybe not. Maybe just a
- 47:56Speaker 4: different flavor. But then I also have been putting in
- 47:59Speaker 4: like a slice of two a bacon and then peanut
- 48:02Speaker 4: butter jelly bacon.
- 48:04Speaker 2: It's real canvas that'll set you free.
- 48:06Speaker 4: Brother.
- 48:07Speaker 2: I'll buy jack Links every now and then, just hoping
- 48:09Speaker 2: that there's gonna be like a little note and sign
- 48:12Speaker 2: saying I can come hunt their property like I want
- 48:14Speaker 2: an award. They own like twenty thousand acres of badass
- 48:18Speaker 2: ground in western South Dakota where they raise the cattle
- 48:21Speaker 2: that turned into the beef that you eat. So someday,
- 48:25Speaker 2: some day I'm gonna open up that package and it's
- 48:27Speaker 2: gonna say, congratulations, you want a mule deer hunt.
- 48:32Speaker 4: I think you're very sneakily right now, just like throwing.
- 48:36Speaker 2: What I'm doing.
- 48:37Speaker 4: Absolutely, it's not.
- 48:42Speaker 5: Even sneaky's into the world.
- 48:45Speaker 2: Yeah, it's not even sneaky. And their names are the Lynx.
- 48:48Speaker 2: Oh the way you're kidding, No, it's l I n K.
- 48:51Speaker 2: The Lynx make their own sausage too.
- 48:53Speaker 3: That's amazing, all right.
- 48:56Speaker 2: Their next question is from side. My family has always
- 49:01Speaker 2: owned dogs, but now we're ready to own the dog.
- 49:04Speaker 2: The was all capitalized a dog that hunts and is
- 49:08Speaker 2: a great with the family, the kind of dog you
- 49:11Speaker 2: remember long after they're gone. Does the crew have any
- 49:13Speaker 2: recommendations for how to pick the right breeder or pup
- 49:18Speaker 2: And to answer this question here is Tony Peterson.
- 49:21Speaker 12: We should always be looking for the dog that's like
- 49:23Speaker 12: the best dog ever I think anyway. But you know
- 49:27Speaker 12: a lot of people focus on the off switch, which
- 49:30Speaker 12: is sort of a minor thing, even though it doesn't
- 49:32Speaker 12: seem like it. You just train that in like any
- 49:34Speaker 12: you can train any dog to be a good dog
- 49:35Speaker 12: in your house. You can't train a dog to have
- 49:39Speaker 12: extra drive out in the field. So for me, that's
- 49:41Speaker 12: my focus when I'm picking a pup or I have
- 49:44Speaker 12: somebody looking for, you know, a litter for me, and
- 49:47Speaker 12: so I forget about the individual dog and look at
- 49:49Speaker 12: the blood like you want to check out the pedigrees.
- 49:52Speaker 12: And for me to get a lot of drive, I
- 49:55Speaker 12: like to have some hunt test and some field trial
- 49:59Speaker 12: you know, competitors, champions in the mix somewhere in there.
- 50:03Speaker 12: At the very least, you know you're going to get
- 50:04Speaker 12: a dog that really likes to work, is intelligent, it's
- 50:08Speaker 12: going to be an athlete, and there's gonna be a
- 50:10Speaker 12: lot of good health checks that come along with that,
- 50:14Speaker 12: and that's the way you're going to get the drive
- 50:15Speaker 12: that you're gonna have to work with. And then you're
- 50:17Speaker 12: gonna to take that pup home and just train that
- 50:19Speaker 12: off switch.
- 50:21Speaker 2: Cal how did you select Snort?
- 50:24Speaker 4: What the hell?
- 50:25Speaker 9: Well?
- 50:26Speaker 1: I liked a lot of what Tony just said, because yeah,
- 50:30Speaker 1: the drive is is what you need, and it's hard
- 50:35Speaker 1: to like encourage more drive if that's what you're looking for.
- 50:41Speaker 1: It's it's way better to try to train for the
- 50:43Speaker 1: off switch so folks can't see it.
- 50:45Speaker 4: But smart here here, come on.
- 50:50Speaker 1: Snort's been here the whole time, and this dog's got
- 50:56Speaker 1: an incredible amount of drive and runs bad out of
- 51:00Speaker 1: hell and and has all the things, sometimes too much
- 51:05Speaker 1: of them in the field. But she's just been crashed
- 51:08Speaker 1: here on the floor for I mean hours, and she's four,
- 51:14Speaker 1: which you know is plenty old for some folks. But
- 51:17Speaker 1: I know a lot of people listening probably have that dog.
- 51:19Speaker 1: You're like, you know, that dog's eight and everybody still
- 51:21Speaker 1: thinks it's a puppy. And I think hunting is is
- 51:26Speaker 1: a great way to take dogs that have a ton
- 51:30Speaker 1: of drive. And these dogs understand they're like, Oh, here's
- 51:36Speaker 1: where all my energy and neuroticism go into this thing
- 51:41Speaker 1: that like really clicks with with that little doggy soul.
- 51:45Speaker 1: And I think there's a lot of knucklehead Labrador retrievers
- 51:51Speaker 1: out there.
- 51:52Speaker 4: They are that way because they.
- 51:56Speaker 1: Don't they don't get a hunt. I picked Snort exactly
- 52:01Speaker 1: like Tony said, So I said, hey, I want a
- 52:04Speaker 1: dog that is a little hard headed and has some independence.
- 52:14Speaker 1: And when I went and picked her up, I still
- 52:17Speaker 1: have a video of it. She had a pink collar.
- 52:19Speaker 1: A lot of these breeders, they're like, yeah, they tie
- 52:21Speaker 1: ribbons around them or color code them somehow, some way,
- 52:25Speaker 1: And she was the only puppy that was not like
- 52:30Speaker 1: up at the gate paying attention to what's going on.
- 52:34Speaker 1: But when I walked in, all the puppies got up
- 52:37Speaker 1: on the gate and they were like, oh, something interesting's happening.
- 52:40Speaker 1: And then the pink collar girl turned around and all
- 52:43Speaker 1: the puppies just spread out of the way, and Snort
- 52:48Speaker 1: came up to the fence and was like hmm. And
- 52:51Speaker 1: at that point I was like, oh, man, maybe I
- 52:53Speaker 1: shouldn't have done this.
- 52:54Speaker 2: The spiritual at that point.
- 52:56Speaker 4: Well, I was.
- 52:58Speaker 1: I interpreted it more as like, oh, that's the alpha
- 53:00Speaker 1: female in this thing, and she's like all the puppy
- 53:03Speaker 1: litter was like, get out.
- 53:05Speaker 4: Of her way.
- 53:06Speaker 1: She's picking you're picking her. I don't think she was
- 53:10Speaker 1: picking me. I think she's just like sizing things up.
- 53:14Speaker 1: So but the plane ride home and everything, she was like, oh,
- 53:20Speaker 1: I am I need I need a friend here because
- 53:23Speaker 1: this is scary scary stuff and uh and that's where
- 53:27Speaker 1: the bond was was formed initially. So but yeah, I
- 53:32Speaker 1: like I like that. I like higher drive, more competitiveness,
- 53:37Speaker 1: stuff like that. You know, you can train out some
- 53:39Speaker 1: bad behaviors, it's just hard to build them in.
- 53:42Speaker 4: I feel bad.
- 53:43Speaker 2: You can hear Tony talk about more of those things
- 53:45Speaker 2: on Foundations right now, on which.
- 53:48Speaker 1: I think is a very unique dog podcast in the
- 53:52Speaker 1: world of dog podcasts out there. I think this is
- 53:55Speaker 1: a unique take. So Tony's doing an awesome job.
- 53:59Speaker 4: Yeah, I feel bad for all of the dogs that
- 54:02Speaker 4: this family has had prior to this moment because they're
- 54:07Speaker 4: not remembered. They're just like cast off, forgotten, and you know,
- 54:13Speaker 4: I don't even know if they got a proper burial.
- 54:15Speaker 1: But deep down, when those they said, time is quit
- 54:18Speaker 1: messing around.
- 54:18Speaker 5: When those dogs look in the mirror, they know what
- 54:20Speaker 5: they're looking at. Do you think they're really a dog?
- 54:24Speaker 2: Not the dog?
- 54:25Speaker 4: Not the dog?
- 54:26Speaker 2: Yeah? How many trips did you make to the pound
- 54:28Speaker 2: before you found mingus?
- 54:30Speaker 4: I only made one.
- 54:33Speaker 2: Could you have an inside source there?
- 54:35Speaker 4: No? No, because at the time what had happened is
- 54:39Speaker 4: I had been researching dogs way too long, like over
- 54:44Speaker 4: a year. Maybeing coming on too, and it got to
- 54:46Speaker 4: the point where my family said, f this. We're just
- 54:50Speaker 4: ready for anything with fur and at least a couple
- 54:52Speaker 4: of legs and we'll be good, you know, we just
- 54:54Speaker 4: need something to rub on. And so I just got
- 54:57Speaker 4: a phone call that said, hey, we're heading down to
- 55:00Speaker 4: the Stafford Shelter and Livingston. They've got a bunch of
- 55:03Speaker 4: blue tick coon hounds. You know, if you want any
- 55:07Speaker 4: input on this, you better come down too. So on
- 55:11Speaker 4: the way there, I'm like, call my buddy Jake, who
- 55:14Speaker 4: runs hounds. I'm like, hey, what do you know about
- 55:16Speaker 4: blue tick coon hounds? You know, because looks like we
- 55:19Speaker 4: got a chance. So the way we picked out a
- 55:21Speaker 4: dog is that basically by the time I got there,
- 55:23Speaker 4: I got there just in time to see the guy
- 55:25Speaker 4: from the shelter, basically shoving my kids into the cage
- 55:29Speaker 4: with the puppies and locking the lash behind him, and
- 55:32Speaker 4: then they just had a ball in there. And yeah,
- 55:36Speaker 4: they picked out the mild mannered one.
- 55:38Speaker 2: Oh so there you had other options there besides Mingus.
- 55:42Speaker 4: Yeah, there were two others that were definitely at that
- 55:46Speaker 4: moment in time. It's hard to tell because Mingus looked
- 55:50Speaker 4: emaciated and I think that he probably, if I had
- 55:54Speaker 4: to guess, the other two males were just stronger, tougher
- 55:58Speaker 4: and when there was any food around, Mingus was not
- 56:01Speaker 4: getting a bite, right because the other two were pushing
- 56:04Speaker 4: him out of the way. Maybe he was literally a
- 56:07Speaker 4: bag of bones. And so yes, we could have picked
- 56:12Speaker 4: what was seemed to be more you know, aggressive, more energetic,
- 56:16Speaker 4: definitely healthier looking in the moment dogs, but we went
- 56:20Speaker 4: with the mellow one. Mingus was.
- 56:23Speaker 1: Mingus is huge, right, I mean he's not as he's
- 56:26Speaker 1: probably not as big as.
- 56:27Speaker 2: He let him.
- 56:28Speaker 4: He will easily hit one hundred pounds, big boy.
- 56:31Speaker 1: And I brought Snort home, you know, at like seven
- 56:35Speaker 1: and a half weeks, little tiny puppy, and Mingus is
- 56:39Speaker 1: the first dog. Because we were watching Mingus at the time.
- 56:45Speaker 1: So I got brought a snort home and put her
- 56:48Speaker 1: down in her kennel and just opened the door and
- 56:51Speaker 1: was like, don't drag her out of there, let her
- 56:53Speaker 1: have her space. And then eventually she crept out and
- 56:56Speaker 1: crawled into bed with Mingus. I mean he wanted to.
- 57:00Speaker 4: I mean they're good to cute Randal.
- 57:03Speaker 1: Mingus is giant dog, like real hunting dog, like gentle
- 57:09Speaker 1: old soul man, good good dog.
- 57:12Speaker 2: Randall. You think you own as many dogs as everyone
- 57:14Speaker 2: else in here combined? Yes, how did you pick those?
- 57:18Speaker 4: Well?
- 57:19Speaker 5: Our most recent dog was a rescue from a breeding operation,
- 57:25Speaker 5: so we got her when she was six and a
- 57:27Speaker 5: half and just a delightful animal, terrified of everything, people mostly,
- 57:36Speaker 5: But we didn't really have choices there. We saw this
- 57:39Speaker 5: Facebook post that they were trying to find a new
- 57:42Speaker 5: home for this dog, and so that's how we got
- 57:45Speaker 5: Lil Dolly. We this was like the day or like
- 57:51Speaker 5: the we're going to go to New Orleans for a wedding.
- 57:53Speaker 5: The wedding got canceled because of COVID, so we're like, well,
- 57:56Speaker 5: we're going to be home for a little while. It
- 57:58Speaker 5: seems it seems like a good time to get a puppy,
- 58:01Speaker 5: So we called around and tried to find a litter
- 58:03Speaker 5: that was available within a five hour drive, and sure enough,
- 58:07Speaker 5: we drove down to Saint Anthony, Idaho, and there were
- 58:12Speaker 5: two puppies left in this litter and the one was
- 58:15Speaker 5: like this, and then the other one was like this
- 58:17Speaker 5: on top of it. And I can't remember if dollar. Yeah,
- 58:21Speaker 5: I can't remember if Dolly was on the top or
- 58:23Speaker 5: the bottom. But we were like, how bad. I mean,
- 58:25Speaker 5: they're both doing cute things. Plus there aren't any other options,
- 58:28Speaker 5: so we grabbed Dolly and drove home and then the
- 58:31Speaker 5: lockdown order went into effect. Rosie. I don't know what
- 58:36Speaker 5: we did to get so lucky to have Rosie, but yeah,
- 58:40Speaker 5: none of our dog buying experiences. I probably if I
- 58:43Speaker 5: just started from scratch and sketched out the playbook they
- 58:47Speaker 5: it would in no way resemble how we got our dogs.
- 58:50Speaker 5: But not applicable, Nope, nope. I mean asking how to
- 58:53Speaker 5: buy a dog. Uh, that's a good hunting dog and
- 58:57Speaker 5: that was going to make you proud in the field
- 58:59Speaker 5: and it's going to be well behaved at home. Asking
- 59:01Speaker 5: me that question is like, I don't know, asking someone
- 59:05Speaker 5: who's never been in a serious relationship with their marriage
- 59:08Speaker 5: advice is or something to that effect. I just I
- 59:12Speaker 5: don't know. I have dogs, but they don't fit that profile,
- 59:16Speaker 5: so it just exists. Yeah, yeah, like Dolly doesn't have
- 59:19Speaker 5: an off switch. She just carries the tennis ball around
- 59:22Speaker 5: and puts it in your lap.
- 59:23Speaker 3: But we love her.
- 59:24Speaker 6: Still, Corey, anything to add, Man, I don't really have
- 59:26Speaker 6: a dog in this fight.
- 59:28Speaker 2: Oh good one, All right, that's the next question is
- 59:31Speaker 2: to our final question. This is from Nancy. What would
- 59:34Speaker 2: y'all be doing if you didn't work at meat Eater?
- 59:37Speaker 2: What's your dream job? And to answer this here is
- 59:40Speaker 2: Clay Newcombe.
- 59:41Speaker 4: I'm very interested to hear this, Spencer.
- 59:44Speaker 13: You asked me what I would do if I didn't
- 59:47Speaker 13: work for meat Eater and I was doing my dream job. Man,
- 59:51Speaker 13: I'm really ambitious, and that would just shoot for the stars.
- 59:56Speaker 3: I would like.
- 59:57Speaker 13: To raise and train young mules and about every two
- 1:00:01Speaker 13: years sell a crop of really high dollar finished mules.
- 1:00:06Speaker 13: That would be part one of my entrepreneurial business because
- 1:00:11Speaker 13: I've always valued independence over finances.
- 1:00:14Speaker 5: So part one would be mules.
- 1:00:16Speaker 13: Part two would be I would raise a few squirrel
- 1:00:19Speaker 13: dogs every year. Now there's not a big there's not
- 1:00:22Speaker 13: big money in squirrel dogs. Don't get the wrong idea,
- 1:00:24Speaker 13: but you know, it'd be just enough to make it
- 1:00:26Speaker 13: worth it. I'd probably have to supplement it with some
- 1:00:28Speaker 13: manual labor. I've got a college degree. I mean, like,
- 1:00:31Speaker 13: I could go work in the business sector or something
- 1:00:34Speaker 13: maybe I don't know, and but that would just be ridiculous.
- 1:00:39Speaker 13: I'm not gonna do that. So I would probably have
- 1:00:41Speaker 13: to do stonework.
- 1:00:45Speaker 5: That's kind of something that I do.
- 1:00:47Speaker 13: I do masonry work. And lastly, I had commercial fish
- 1:00:50Speaker 13: with Brent Reeds. Me and Brent Reeves would own the
- 1:00:54Speaker 13: Southern fish market. That's my dream, dream entrepreneurial package right there.
- 1:01:00Speaker 2: Be honest dream job raising mules and catching fish.
- 1:01:05Speaker 10: Mmmmm.
- 1:01:08Speaker 4: I think it'd be fun to learn how to how
- 1:01:09Speaker 4: to train a mule, but not my dream job. You know.
- 1:01:14Speaker 4: I have been thinking about that lately. I've been really
- 1:01:17Speaker 4: getting into the habitat management thing over there in Wisconsin,
- 1:01:21Speaker 4: and I could see it be.
- 1:01:24Speaker 6: That.
- 1:01:25Speaker 4: Sometimes I get jealous of those foresters and those people
- 1:01:28Speaker 4: there doing that work, so I look at them and go, man,
- 1:01:30Speaker 4: I think they might be spending more time outdoors than
- 1:01:33Speaker 4: I am. You know, because even in the off season, right,
- 1:01:36Speaker 4: they're just out in the woods working some way or another,
- 1:01:41Speaker 4: you know. And uh, I don't know. I've been I've
- 1:01:43Speaker 4: been digging, going into that rabbit hole and uh so
- 1:01:47Speaker 4: I could see doing that.
- 1:01:48Speaker 2: We had a trivia question before about the happiest profession
- 1:01:51Speaker 2: in America. Uh, and it's forestry. People who work in
- 1:01:55Speaker 2: forestry are the happiest, not just god like, not just
- 1:01:58Speaker 2: happiest of folks. And like the outdoor industry or people
- 1:02:02Speaker 2: who work outside, just the happiest in the entire country. Corey,
- 1:02:06Speaker 2: how about.
- 1:02:06Speaker 5: You a surf instructor in Costa Rica?
- 1:02:11Speaker 2: Do you know how to surf?
- 1:02:13Speaker 5: I can stand up on a surfboard.
- 1:02:14Speaker 6: You can, Oh, yeah, okay, but I don't know if
- 1:02:18Speaker 6: I'm technically zero Wayta Rica behind a boat on Whitefish
- 1:02:24Speaker 6: Lake growing up.
- 1:02:26Speaker 4: Oh, that don't count.
- 1:02:27Speaker 6: Oh no, but it does translate into the ocean. Have
- 1:02:29Speaker 6: you Have you gone in the ocean in Hawaii?
- 1:02:33Speaker 3: Wow?
- 1:02:33Speaker 6: But if I could, if I could afford it, I'd
- 1:02:35Speaker 6: drop everything and move my family to Costa Rica and
- 1:02:38Speaker 6: just live in a banana house on the beach.
- 1:02:40Speaker 5: Given your for your long term health, I think it's
- 1:02:44Speaker 5: a good thing that.
- 1:02:48Speaker 6: Yeah, or a professional golfer golf courses aside.
- 1:02:53Speaker 2: Corey is a great golfer.
- 1:02:54Speaker 5: Can I be a magician?
- 1:02:55Speaker 3: I mean, come on, what are we doing.
- 1:02:58Speaker 5: The golfer?
- 1:03:00Speaker 2: He is genuinely meat Eater's best golfer and he does
- 1:03:02Speaker 2: it like once a year, sometimes once every two years.
- 1:03:08Speaker 4: And I went out one days prior.
- 1:03:11Speaker 2: But it for most people, golf isn't like that. Were like,
- 1:03:15Speaker 2: you just don't play for a decade and then you
- 1:03:16Speaker 2: go play and you're still good. Corey it is like that.
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: Well, most people over think trip.
- 1:03:22Speaker 2: Golfing is a lot. I could work the rest of
- 1:03:26Speaker 2: my life to be as good as Corey and it
- 1:03:27Speaker 2: wouldn't happen. I don't think genuinely my dream job, I
- 1:03:32Speaker 2: would want to be a fantasy football commissioner for high rollers.
- 1:03:36Speaker 2: Imagine leagues that have like a million dollar perse where
- 1:03:39Speaker 2: I'm the commissioner for like Michael Jordan and Jerry Seinfeld
- 1:03:43Speaker 2: and Snoop Dogg and every single week I'm like writing
- 1:03:46Speaker 2: a newsletter for them. I'm hosting just an absolute banger
- 1:03:49Speaker 2: draft party at the beginning of the year.
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: I'll be honest with your Spencer. I can't imagine.
- 1:03:55Speaker 2: It'd be great. I would design logos for each team.
- 1:03:58Speaker 2: I'd have power rankings. I would be so good at
- 1:04:00Speaker 2: that job, and I would just be like the fantasy
- 1:04:03Speaker 2: football commissioner.
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: I can't even tell you that I want that for
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: you because I have no idea what you're talking about.
- 1:04:10Speaker 2: Yeah, well that's good. The other thing to be, you know,
- 1:04:13Speaker 2: like a hunting consultant. Maybe if like Jack Links, you
- 1:04:16Speaker 2: know they need hunt for property, tell me more. Yeah,
- 1:04:19Speaker 2: and then I'd go out there and be like, well,
- 1:04:21Speaker 2: here's how I'd do it, and then they would pay
- 1:04:23Speaker 2: me and I'd also get to hunt there. So I
- 1:04:26Speaker 2: think I think that's the other one.
- 1:04:27Speaker 4: They'd probably pay it enough that you just be able
- 1:04:29Speaker 4: to buy your own twenty thousand acres m.
- 1:04:32Speaker 2: Randall dream job. Oh besides playing meat eat to trivia,
- 1:04:37Speaker 2: I was.
- 1:04:37Speaker 5: Gonna say, playing professional basketball. I can shoot a basketball.
- 1:04:43Speaker 2: Yeah, and you're like, you're tall enough to be a
- 1:04:45Speaker 2: point guard.
- 1:04:45Speaker 3: Oh no, Yeah.
- 1:04:47Speaker 5: I thought if we were just doing our dream jobs,
- 1:04:48Speaker 5: we could arbitrarily change everything about ourselves. So i'd be
- 1:04:51Speaker 5: six or eight.
- 1:04:54Speaker 4: I don't think we've quite done that. I mean, Spencer
- 1:04:56Speaker 4: did just kind of.
- 1:04:58Speaker 2: That job does exist, though, one your dream job I
- 1:05:01Speaker 2: mean so the surf instructor in Costa Rica and forestry.
- 1:05:07Speaker 4: Jeez, six eight d.
- 1:05:09Speaker 2: I should have small forward.
- 1:05:11Speaker 5: Yeah, I should have thought about this more.
- 1:05:16Speaker 2: Cal dream job. We'll come back to Randal while he
- 1:05:18Speaker 2: thinks about it.
- 1:05:21Speaker 4: Food truck for part of the year, that'd be great.
- 1:05:25Speaker 5: Have you ever watched Gable?
- 1:05:27Speaker 2: Have you ever watched a great American food truck race? Nothing,
- 1:05:30Speaker 2: it's a lot of fun.
- 1:05:30Speaker 4: Tell me more about why that would be a dream
- 1:05:34Speaker 4: job for you.
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: I really like food. I really like people appreciating the
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: food that I cook. And here in bos Angelus, there's
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: just like this horrible void of the breakfast sandwich market
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: where it's like, man, you want to fork over fourteen
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: dollars for just a crappy breakfast for anything?
- 1:05:58Speaker 3: Yes?
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: I don't, Man, it's here in Bozeman.
- 1:06:01Speaker 4: It's very true.
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: Oh, just ridiculously over complicated crap. So yeah, good coffee,
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: breakfast sandwich, open until we're closed.
- 1:06:15Speaker 4: Do you already know the makeup of this breakfast sandwich home?
- 1:06:20Speaker 4: I want to hear.
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: Well, the sandwich is egg McMuffin, okay, just like a
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: nice solid egg McMuffin and American cheese.
- 1:06:33Speaker 5: Yeah, Canadian bacon.
- 1:06:34Speaker 4: No, God, butter with American bacon.
- 1:06:42Speaker 2: Leave at Randall, is it butter on the muffin? Or
- 1:06:44Speaker 2: what are we putting on the.
- 1:06:47Speaker 4: Yeah, that's what I do. But don't tell anybody because
- 1:06:52Speaker 4: they love it. Yeah. So that that's one part of it.
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: And then and yeah, I want like, you know, our
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: reasonably sized uh you know, farm and grazing operation. And
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: I want to live in the middle of it.
- 1:07:13Speaker 5: Okay, Randall, I want to be uh. I want to
- 1:07:20Speaker 5: be like a like a property manager. But like it's
- 1:07:23Speaker 5: not it's not actually like some of like, oh, he's
- 1:07:25Speaker 5: got a guy.
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: You want to be like magnum p I. Yeah, he
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: lives in that giant house and they're like.
- 1:07:31Speaker 5: They're like, I don't really know what he does, but
- 1:07:33Speaker 5: he seems to be comfortable and he has access to
- 1:07:35Speaker 5: all of this stuff that he didn't earn. I'd like
- 1:07:38Speaker 5: to be that he's got to get the boat. Oh
- 1:07:41Speaker 5: you know, so and so is coming in for for
- 1:07:43Speaker 5: a fishing trip. He's got to get the boats out,
- 1:07:46Speaker 5: make sure the boats are all running well.
- 1:07:47Speaker 2: And then you tell someone to get the boats.
- 1:07:49Speaker 5: Yeah, exactly. I have like a couple like local teenagers
- 1:07:52Speaker 5: that do most of the work for me.
- 1:07:54Speaker 4: Yeah, but and you just shower them and wisdom.
- 1:07:57Speaker 5: Yeah yeah, and uh but but I'm just sort of
- 1:08:00Speaker 5: grumpy all the time despite this.
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: You know where the name Evan Rude comes from.
- 1:08:04Speaker 5: Embarrassingly comfortable situation that I've stumbled into. I think that
- 1:08:09Speaker 5: would work well for me.
- 1:08:10Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:08:11Speaker 5: Yeah, I don't know about the food truck thing. It
- 1:08:13Speaker 5: just seems hot in there.
- 1:08:15Speaker 4: A lot of work do, Yeah, it's not like you're
- 1:08:18Speaker 4: in a regular schedule.
- 1:08:19Speaker 5: Yeah. Actually I was at a bar last year and
- 1:08:24Speaker 5: there's there are two women and uh, they're just well
- 1:08:28Speaker 5: and someone asked, no, what do you do?
- 1:08:29Speaker 3: And she said, uh, she said.
- 1:08:32Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm a I'm a I manage money. I'm a
- 1:08:36Speaker 5: financial manager. And her friend said her friend sort of
- 1:08:41Speaker 5: popped her balloon, and she's like, yeah, she just manages
- 1:08:43Speaker 5: our money. Oh, and so that's what I like to do.
- 1:08:46Speaker 2: Yeah. You know, I'd learned the first year in Bozeman
- 1:08:49Speaker 2: that the question of saying like what do you do
- 1:08:51Speaker 2: for a living can be a little indelicate sometimes, So
- 1:08:54Speaker 2: I've heard folks phrase it what what keeps you busy?
