- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. And today we are continuing in
- 0:19Book 5 of Psalms. And specifically right now we're
- 0:21walking through some of the halal Psalms, that is psalms
- 0:26that would be sung during the time of Passover each year in
- 0:30the Jewish calendar, which also means that these were the songs
- 0:34that Jesus sang the week of his death.
- 0:37And so today in Psalm 114, this is a very short Psalm.
- 0:42It's only 8 verses here in English.
- 0:46And as we walk through this, you're going to see this would
- 0:49bring instantly back to mind Passover and the story.
- 0:53And so we're going to look today and, and see what the Lord has
- 0:56for us from this passage. It was, it's got some fun
- 1:01imagery, some fun pictures in it that hopefully as we reflect on
- 1:05these and on the stories that are being brought to mind, it
- 1:09will encourage our hearts even for today.
- 1:11So let's dive right in verse #1 When Israel came out of Egypt,
- 1:17the House of Jacob from a people who spoke a foreign language,
- 1:22Judah became his God's sanctuary, Israel his dominion.
- 1:27The sea looked and fled the the Jordan turned back, the
- 1:31mountains skipped like Rams, the hills like lambs.
- 1:36Why was it see, that you fled Jordan, that you turned back
- 1:40mountains, that you skipped like Rams, hills like lambs, like
- 1:45lambs, tremble earth at the presence of the Lord, at the
- 1:50presence of the God of Jacob, who turned the rock into a pool,
- 1:55the Flint into a spring? All right, you read through
- 2:00that. And probably like me, if you
- 2:03know the story of the Exodus, you might be going, yeah, OK.
- 2:06I remember some of these stories.
- 2:08If you haven't heard those stories before, you're probably
- 2:10like, what in the world is happening?
- 2:12So let's walk through. We'll give some of the
- 2:14historical details, and then we'll see some of what it has
- 2:17for us and what it means for us today.
- 2:20So verse #1 it says when Israel came out of Egypt, so the
- 2:24children of Israel, you, you might recall the stories of
- 2:28Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and Jacob's son Joseph was sold into
- 2:34slavery. He went down to Egypt and was
- 2:38sold to a a leader there, a man named Potiphar.
- 2:42And through a whole series of circumstances that I won't get
- 2:45into right now, Joseph ended up being the second most powerful
- 2:50man in Egypt. And as a result, when a great
- 2:54time, first of plenty came, Joseph was able to store food
- 2:59away for seven years of horrible famine.
- 3:03And when that famine came, Egypt was incredibly blessed.
- 3:08They were able to become enriched through selling lots of
- 3:13the extra food that they had collected during the years of
- 3:17plenty. And Jacob's other sons, Joseph's
- 3:21brothers or half brothers, they ended up coming down to Egypt
- 3:26from Canaan. They did not know that Joseph
- 3:29was still alive and they certainly didn't know that he
- 3:32was the one that was in charge of Egypt.
- 3:34And so the family ended up being reunited.
- 3:37There was forgiveness. Joseph encouraged all of his
- 3:41family to come down to Egypt so that they wouldn't have to
- 3:44suffer in the famine. And so they were there and they
- 3:47ended up being there for about 400 years.
- 3:50What ended up happening was a different clan came in and took
- 3:55over Egypt. And so as a result, though the
- 3:59Israelite people, the family of Joseph, though at one point they
- 4:03were fairly well loved by the Egyptian government of the time,
- 4:08at least when Joseph was there, there came a time when the
- 4:11rulers did not know and did not care about Joseph or his people.
- 4:16And so they subjugated them and they put them into slavery.
- 4:19And for 400 years Israel was down in Egypt and they cried out
- 4:24to the Lord in their slavery. The the Pharaoh there had such
- 4:30hatred and distrust of the Israelite people and how God was
- 4:35blessing them and and enlarging their families and enlarging
- 4:39their their crops and and children.
- 4:43And I'm trying to recall can't remember the animals, the herds
- 4:47flocks was the word I was trying to think of.
- 4:49Thank you. And so Pharaoh was so jealous
- 4:53and distrustful and fearful of the prosperity that God was
- 4:58bringing that he ordered for the midwives of Israel to kill the
- 5:04newborn males as soon as they were born.
- 5:08But the midwives did not listen to Pharaoh and they lied to him.
- 5:12And they said, listen, you know, we we would do what you're
- 5:14asking. But turns out, you know, by the
- 5:17time we get there, the women are already done.
- 5:20And so we can't, you know, do this kind of underhanded murder
- 5:23that you're asking us to do. And so then Pharaoh switched
- 5:26tactics and he instructed his soldiers just to murder the
- 5:31infant boys of Israel. But there was one family and 1
- 5:35mother named Jochebed. And she had a son named Moses.
- 5:39And he was precious to her. She cared about him.
- 5:42She protected him and through a whole long series of of
- 5:47circumstances that you can read about an exodus.
- 5:50Moses ended up being raised in Pharaoh's house by his daughter
- 5:55or granddaughter. The the exact relation is an
- 5:59entirely defined for us in scripture.
- 6:02He was raised there. He was raised as an Egyptian.
- 6:05At about 40 years of age, he actually killed an Egyptian who
- 6:10was abusing a Hebrew slave, and as a result, he ran into the
- 6:14wilderness. He was in the wilderness of
- 6:16Midian for about 40 years. He got married.
- 6:19He had a couple kids, and then God appeared to him in a burning
- 6:22Bush and said, I want you to go back to Egypt and release my
- 6:26people. And so Moses went back at 80
- 6:28years old. I, I know there's probably a
- 6:31couple of people that are maybe around that age even right now
- 6:34listening to the podcast. And can you think about
- 6:37beginning your exodus out of Egypt at 80 years old?
- 6:43Well, that's what Moses was doing.
- 6:45And so he went down to Egypt. You can remember the 10 plagues
- 6:49and all of that. And so Moses LED Israel out of
- 6:52Egypt. And the last thing they did
- 6:53before leaving was they held the Passover that there was the 10th
- 6:57plague, the death Angel that came through.
- 7:00And there was going to be a passing of every first born male
- 7:05that did not have the blood of the lamb on the doorposts of the
- 7:10houses, both for Israel and for Egypt.
- 7:13And whoever did place the blood of a spotless lamb on the
- 7:17doorpost, they would experience, if you will, Passover that the
- 7:22death Angel would pass over that house and he would not take the
- 7:25life of the first born boy in that house.
- 7:29And so as they were doing that, they that night they ate some
- 7:35unleavened bread and they drank some of the juice.
- 7:39This would be the Last Supper that Jesus and his disciples
- 7:43partook of before Jesus's death. And so we have to have that
- 7:49story in mind as we look at Psalm 114.
- 7:51So Israel's coming out of out of Egypt, the House of Jacob from a
- 7:55people who spoke a foreign language, that the Egyptian
- 7:59language was different than the Hebrew language and verse #2 it
- 8:04says when Israel came out of Egypt, Judah became his God's
- 8:08sanctuary, Israel, God's dominion that God made his, if
- 8:13you will, He made his dwelling with men that in the ark of the
- 8:19covenant in his presence, the the pillar of fire by day or
- 8:24sorry, the, the cloud, pillar of cloud by day, pillar of fire by
- 8:28night, sorry. I had to make sure I had that
- 8:30correctly. He was with the children of
- 8:33Israel and you can think about as they went to Mount Sinai and
- 8:36received the law, the commands of God, even the 10 commandments
- 8:41that Moses received on the tablets of stone carved into by
- 8:46the hand of God, as Moses received that God had made
- 8:53Israel the place that he now lived.
- 8:56Want to pause here real quick? You and I, if we have accepted
- 9:01Christ Jesus as our Lord and our Savior, we have now become the
- 9:05dwelling place of God. We are, if you will, His
- 9:08sanctuary, His temple, the place where He has set up His home.
- 9:13If our life is the abode of our God, may we live in a holy way.
- 9:20May we think holy thoughts, may we say holy things.
- 9:24Let us not profane or dirty. The temple that God has, He has
- 9:32ennobled us with. I apologize this evening.
- 9:36I have a whole bunch of words that my brain says, Oh yes, this
- 9:39is the word that means He has honored you.
- 9:42He has blessed your life with his own presence, and so you
- 9:47ought to treat your life as something important, as
- 9:51something sacred and holy. You don't belong to you, you
- 9:54belong to God, as Paul would tell us in Second Corinthians,
- 9:59and I think First Corinthians 5 or 6 as well, that our body is
- 10:04the temple of the Holy Spirit, which we have from God who is in
- 10:07us, and we are not our own. Therefore glorify God in your
- 10:10body and in your spirit, which are gods.
- 10:16So Judah became God's sanctuary, Israel his dominion.
- 10:20He chose the children of Israel as his people, that he would
- 10:25bring the Messianic line through, that David would come
- 10:29through that line, and then Jesus from the line of David,
- 10:31from the line of Judah and Jacob and Isaac and Abraham.
- 10:37So that happens in verse 2 #3 verse 3.
- 10:42The sea looked and fled. The Jordan turned back.
- 10:45So here's we look at the exodus. You have kind of the beginning
- 10:48with the parting of the Red Sea, and then you have the end of the
- 10:52exodus with the parting of the Jordan separated by 40 years.
- 10:58But we remember this, that even nature itself had to obey our
- 11:03God. And this is something when we
- 11:05think about Jesus, that his greatness came not even because
- 11:12the sea split for him. He didn't need to walk on dry
- 11:15ground. Jesus could walk on water.
- 11:18So as the children of Israel and Moses, in this great show of
- 11:22God's power, they walked through these bodies of water on dry
- 11:26ground. What a miracle that is from our
- 11:29God. Jesus is even better.
- 11:31Jesus went through an even greater exodus that he walked on
- 11:35the waters. He doesn't need dry ground in
- 11:37order to take a, you know, mid river or mid lake hike.
- 11:43And I just think that's so amazing thinking about what
- 11:46Jesus has done. You can also think that the
- 11:48Jordan was the last step in the journey of the Exodus for the
- 11:53children of Israel, but it was almost the first step in the
- 11:56journey for Jesus that certainly he went down to Egypt as a child
- 12:01there in fulfillment of prophecy, even as we know from
- 12:04Hosea 11, where the prophet would say out of Egypt, have I
- 12:09called my son? And then in the New Testament,
- 12:12we're told This is why Jesus ended up, why the circumstances
- 12:16of his life led him down to Egypt, that he would come from
- 12:19Egypt to the Promised Land, just as his ancestors had done.
- 12:23He is the true and better Israel.
- 12:25He is the true and better Moses. He's the true and better Joshua.
- 12:29He's the best everything. Everyone that came before him
- 12:33was an incomplete and imperfect picture of who Jesus would
- 12:37perfectly be. So Jesus, yes, goes down to
- 12:41Egypt, but then as he's beginning his earthly ministry,
- 12:44he gets baptized by John in the Jordan.
- 12:48And then instead of coming from the wilderness into Canaan, he
- 12:52goes from Canaan into the Jordan, into the wilderness
- 12:55where he is tempted. Not for 40 years like the
- 12:58Israelites for their sin and their refusal to follow God, but
- 13:02he's tempted by Satan for 40 days in the wilderness.
- 13:06And Jesus succeeds where the children of Israel failed and
- 13:10where they doubted God and where they didn't follow him, and
- 13:13where they worshipped false gods and false idols of their own
- 13:17creation. And they rebelled against God's
- 13:21leaders and said, Jesus submitted to God's leadership
- 13:24and Jesus trusted God to provide for him.
- 13:28He trusted him for the food that Israel didn't trust God for it,
- 13:33even though he gave them the manna and he gave them the quail
- 13:36and he gave them the water from the rock.
- 13:38But Jesus, when he was tempted by Satan to take matters into
- 13:41his own hands and command the stones to be made bread, Jesus
- 13:45didn't do that and said he said, no, I don't live by bread alone.
- 13:49I live by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.
- 13:52I'm going to listen to the voice of my father.
- 13:55So verse 3, the sea looked and fled, the Jordan turned back.
- 13:58We can think about Jesus and what he accomplished.
- 14:01And also the fact that God is so amazing that he does these
- 14:04miracles and that the same miracle working God that worked
- 14:08thousands of years ago for the children of Israel is the same
- 14:11wonder working God that works on our behalf.
- 14:14And I've seen time and time again, God answer prayers.
- 14:17God come through in ways that I could never have orchestrated or
- 14:21imagined. God is the wonder worker.
- 14:25Verse #4 the mountains skipped like Rams, the hills like lambs.
- 14:29This is saying like in in fear, they are trying to get away, if
- 14:33you will, from the Lord, and that's what it says in verses 5
- 14:36and 6. Why was it, see, that you fled
- 14:38Jordan, that you turned back mountains, that you skipped like
- 14:40Rams, hills like lambs? And this is probably talking to
- 14:45the shaking of Mount Sinai that was experienced by the children
- 14:48of Israel. When they got to the mountain,
- 14:50God's presence was there. And in the Exodus 1916, it says
- 14:53on the third day when morning came, there was Thunder and
- 14:56lightning, a thick cloud on the mountain and a very loud blast
- 15:00from a trumpet so that all the people in the camp shuttered.
- 15:05And this is what it's like to interact with our God, that
- 15:08there is might and power and so much incredible awe inspiring
- 15:15action that is taken by our God. So then verses 7 and 8 says, OK,
- 15:21we remember what God has done, and so now here is what we need
- 15:25to be doing. Verse 7, tremble earth at the
- 15:28presence of the Lord, at the presence of the God of Jacob,
- 15:32who turned the rock into a pool, the Flint into a spring.
- 15:36There was a time when the children of Israel needed water
- 15:39and so the Lord instructed Moses to speak to the rock and water
- 15:42would come out of it. Moses got angry at the people.
- 15:45He hit the rock instead of speaking to it, but water still
- 15:48came out because God was good even when people were not.
- 15:52And I think, oh man, verse verse 8, as we think about Jesus and
- 15:57his death that mankind could have asked for Jesus to forgive
- 16:04them. He he would have.
- 16:06You can think of his words on the cross.
- 16:08Father, forgive them for they know not what they do.
- 16:10They could have spoken to God, but we hurt Him, we beat Him, we
- 16:17made him bloody, we put the crown of thorns onto his head.
- 16:20We crucified Him. And though we struck the Rock of
- 16:24Ages and his bleeding out for us, you can think that the blood
- 16:29and water that poured from his side as he was pierced, that we
- 16:33received a life that God was good.
- 16:36God was good to provide salvation.
- 16:38God was good to provide resurrection.
- 16:39God was good to provide everlasting life, even though
- 16:44people did not earn it. And I think about this God here
- 16:47as he's mentioned the God of Jacob for all of those that have
- 16:49been traveling with us through in our sermon podcast, walking
- 16:54through the life of Jacob in our family Family Feud series in
- 16:59Genesis 25 through 36. You know, Jacob's not a great
- 17:03person. Like when you hear the God of
- 17:05Jacob, you're not hearing like this great, laudable person.
- 17:10You're thinking about a very broken person.
- 17:13He is the God who is faithful to the unfaithful.
- 17:16He is the holy God of the unholy.
- 17:19And so here God is good to us. He's forgiving, He's patient,
- 17:23and He gives us grace and life and forgiveness, though we have
- 17:28not earned it with Him, and instead the we have treated him
- 17:32and others poorly. He has lavished his good grace
- 17:37on us. So let's tremble at his
- 17:39presence. Let us have fear and adoration
- 17:42and worship for this God who forgives, who restores, who
- 17:46heals, who works miracles, who has set up his home inside of
- 17:50our hearts and our lives. The one who can make wonders
- 17:53happen. The God who gave his own life
- 17:56for us, the one who struck for us that we might receive
- 18:00forgiveness of sin and a restored permanent relationship
- 18:05with our God. This is the God who is worthy to
- 18:08be praised in every way. Well, I hope that this Psalm was
- 18:12an encouragement to you, and I loved getting you a look at
- 18:15this. Psalm 115 is our Psalm for next
- 18:19week. I'm really looking forward to
- 18:21that one. And then Psalm 116 is in two
- 18:23weeks from now. That is one of my favorite
- 18:26Psalms of the entire book, and there's 150 of them.
- 18:29So for me to say that's one of my favorites that that's a big
- 18:32statement. And we are almost to the end of
- 18:37our weekly schedule and we'll be going back to a weekday schedule
- 18:41once we hit Psalm 119 in just a few short weeks.
- 18:45Thanks for tuning into Tabernacle Talk.
- 18:47Have a wonderful day.
