Transcript
- 0:25Good morning. Day 16. Back on the path. Weather.
- 0:30Iffy. It is a bit iffy, the weather, this morning.
- 0:34Cheryl and the weather deer. At this stage, it's holding off,
- 0:42but there's plenty of dark clouds around us. Not as long today, but 48 kilometres.
- 0:48Yesterday it was 23 kilometres in cold, wet, muddy conditions.
- 0:53Today is 14 in cold, muddy conditions, but net-braining at this stage, so fingers crossed.
- 1:01Started out this morning in Bellarado, headed to Villafranca Montes de Oca.
- 1:08We were in a hostel albergue last night, but had a dry room.
- 1:13But you can. There's definitely a difference.
- 1:17Noise is wonderful. I can't actually like the noise of the other guests.
- 1:24The Albergue hostels, you know, they'll be partying.
- 1:29There might be people in the smaller area, despite us having the private room.
- 1:35It was fine. It was lovely and lovely.
- 1:37Instead of feeling our legs this morning, if I feel heavy, When I say day 16
- 1:43today, our last rest day was in the emblem.
- 1:47We're due for another one soon. In fact, we sat down last night and tried to
- 1:52arrange our accommodation and have factored in one in the next few days. So today's 14.
- 1:58Tomorrow is 19 Ks. The day after is 19 Ks.
- 2:03Have a rest day in Virgos, and we've booked a nice apartment for the two nights in Virgos.
- 2:11Sherilyn seems to think that we're going to come through the cereal country
- 2:14soon, wheat fields, etc.
- 2:16I don't think we've seen a vineyard for about a day now, so there is a change in the agriculture.
- 2:25Walked through about three or four towns today before we get to our town,
- 2:30and our town's only 14 kilometres away, so that gives you an indication of how
- 2:36close these towns are at the moment,
- 2:39where other times, you know, you can span closer to the 20 kilometre mark before you hit a town.
- 2:47Now, the weather this morning when we got up was 2 degrees.
- 2:51I stuck my head out the window. It was 2 degrees and raining,
- 2:55so it is cold, but I must say two degrees and it not raining at the moment seems
- 3:01to be warmer than the four degrees yesterday and raining, you forget it.
- 3:05Probably has warmed up a little bit but really the rain could start at any moment now.
- 3:11So we're about a bit over two weeks in and I estimate that we've got about a
- 3:18bit under four weeks to go.
- 3:20So we're coming sort of not, We should be really well and truly into the swing
- 3:27of things and the routine of getting up and the fitness and all those sorts of things required,
- 3:33which I suppose we wanted to get to that stage where you see the kilometres
- 3:39and you think, yep, that's fine, we can get that done.
- 3:42Still really enjoying the challenge and the journey.
- 3:47Breakfast this morning was at a local cafe. Actually, the further we walk it,
- 3:52the cheaper it's getting, which is nice.
- 3:53Because everything's in euro,
- 3:55so, you know, the Australian dollar to euro pretty much double the price.
- 4:00Cheryl and I had the tortilla. Jan had a croissant.
- 4:04We each had a hot drink. And that came in at 11 euro something. think.
- 4:10So about the $20, $22 mark in Australian dollars. So that's not too bad for a breakfast.
- 4:19We're just sitting on a park bench in a town called Villa Villam Bistia.
- 4:28Our town starts with a villa. So hopefully it means we're getting closer to
- 4:32our town. Villa, Villa, Villa.
- 4:35It's cold, isn't it? And the cold weather really seizes up my right hip.
- 4:41It's not warming up so far, so the hip's in a bit of pain.
- 4:46But just sitting down and looking at the back of my long pants,
- 4:51my tracksuit pants that I'm walking in, athletic tracksuit pants, I'm covered in mud.
- 4:56Yesterday I had my rain pants on protecting them,
- 5:00but today I've elected not to have them on, So I have got a fair amount of mud
- 5:07up the back of my pants, like a bicycle riding through mud that doesn't have a mud protector on.
- 5:12That's what the back of my pants looks like.
- 5:15But anyway, seat on this park bench is helping out.
- 5:21I have not fallen over yet, I have not slipped over yet, and I think in the
- 5:26fallen over slipped over tally, Sherrilyn, what do you want?
- 5:32One. One. One fall over, but no injuries from it.
- 5:36Just a bit of a slip going down a concrete hill with a bit of loose gravel underneath.
- 5:40No way. Big loose stones. Big loose stones. And Chan?
- 5:44Six. You think you're at six? Fall in the shower, no, fall in the bathroom and
- 5:51two falling into a big ditch.
- 5:54What about the fallovers on day one? Oh, plus that one. So that's seven altogether.
- 6:00I think it's more than that. So anyway, under 10, aren't we? You're under 10.
- 6:06Have you fallen over four times in the bathroom?
- 6:09Maybe that's something not for the podcast. Anyway, hopefully we all stay on
- 6:15our feet today and hopefully this villa town that we're getting to is just over this next hill.
- 6:21Well, we arrived in Villafranca, Montes de Orca, just after midday, so we made good time.
- 6:29It was only 14 kilometres, but it is very cold here. We've checked in.
- 6:34It's a bit of a ghost town. It's Sunday.
- 6:38The only thing that was open when we arrived was a bakery. Lady was very kind
- 6:43in there. I was able to get a coffee.
- 6:46We're able to buy a couple of things there, a focaccia.
- 6:51A sweet biscuit and some salty
- 6:55corn things as well but that looks like
- 6:58it's all the food that we're going to have until we leave this town tomorrow
- 7:02at some stage in the morning but it is cold it's it's less than five degrees
- 7:07we've been able to warm up our room a little bit with a the old style oil heater
- 7:12but as soon as you step foot outside our room and you've got to go out to go to the bathroom.
- 7:18It's absolutely freezing cold, so I think we're going to bunker down in our
- 7:22room for the night, get some rest, try and stay warm, and then move on to our next town tomorrow.
