- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome to the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show. The Huskies
- 0:03Speaker 1: on a major role. We talked to Dan Hurley on
- 0:06Speaker 1: Mike Crispino coach MAUI must seem like a way way
- 0:10Speaker 1: back memory, something you want to forget about, obviously, But
- 0:13Speaker 1: the Huskies have ripped off seven in a row now,
- 0:16Speaker 1: and they're starting to look like Yukon basketball pretty much
- 0:20Speaker 1: every night, the stuff we have seen over the last
- 0:22Speaker 1: couple of years with this squad. So tell us about
- 0:25Speaker 1: the turnaround, because it feels good to go out there
- 0:28Speaker 1: and start to look I think like what you would
- 0:31Speaker 1: like to see here in January and February and March.
- 0:35Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, we're just really just focusing on the
- 0:39Speaker 2: obvious positives here and Maoi was like a month ago
- 0:43Speaker 2: or more so. Obviously the team is. It's a younger team,
- 0:48Speaker 2: you know, it's especially for a high major team. I
- 0:51Speaker 2: think in almost every game that we've gone into, especially
- 0:55Speaker 2: against the high major opponents Big East and our conference
- 1:00Speaker 2: teams and Gonzaga, you know, we've got way more freshmen
- 1:04Speaker 2: and sophomores playing key roles for us, and it's just
- 1:09Speaker 2: one of those things where you know we've improved I
- 1:11Speaker 2: think although our defensive numbers, you know, overall still linger
- 1:18Speaker 2: in the mid nineties, since we've been back playing stateside here,
- 1:23Speaker 2: you know, we've played more to a top fifty, top
- 1:27Speaker 2: sixty defense, you know, with an offense that's obviously ranked
- 1:31Speaker 2: really high in.
- 1:32Speaker 3: Terms of efficiency.
- 1:34Speaker 2: And then you know, you get you know, players that
- 1:37Speaker 2: are just really developed and are becoming better two way
- 1:42Speaker 2: players like Liam. You know, Liam in prison proved so
- 1:46Speaker 2: much in terms of impacting winning. You know, is rebounding.
- 1:51Speaker 2: You know, it's ability to get to the paint, get
- 1:53Speaker 2: to the free throw line, create shots for others, make
- 1:57Speaker 2: big shots in the second half a game. You know,
- 2:00Speaker 2: Hassan has obviously, you know, stabilized you know, the point
- 2:04Speaker 2: guard position, which was in flux in November, at least
- 2:09Speaker 2: from a starting perspective. And you know, he's taken really
- 2:13Speaker 2: good care of the basketball. He's run our offense, he's
- 2:17Speaker 2: been opportunistic to go and playoff script some. You know,
- 2:21Speaker 2: we've gotten offensively, I think, really really good production out
- 2:26Speaker 2: of the center position. The productions there. You know, we
- 2:29Speaker 2: need to improve even more that way. I think, you know,
- 2:32Speaker 2: we need both Sampson and Taris to continue to get
- 2:35Speaker 2: better but you know, and then Caraban has played, uh
- 2:38Speaker 2: you know, when Caraban plays like a Big East Player
- 2:41Speaker 2: of the Year type or an All American type of player,
- 2:44Speaker 2: especially down the stretch of games. The way he's closed
- 2:47Speaker 2: some of these games, you know, it's made us. It
- 2:49Speaker 2: made us tough to beat. And in the seven game
- 2:51Speaker 2: win streak, only you know, one of those games was
- 2:54Speaker 2: against a low major. So you know, we've won seven
- 2:57Speaker 2: in a row, but six of those games have been
- 3:00Speaker 2: you know, three of them have been Big East games,
- 3:02Speaker 2: two on the road, and three of the others were
- 3:05Speaker 2: high major games, one.
- 3:06Speaker 3: On the road at Texas.
- 3:07Speaker 2: So to be able to win six straight games versus
- 3:10Speaker 2: high major opponents is not something that we should you
- 3:16Speaker 2: should feel proud of that.
- 3:17Speaker 3: I'm proud of the team.
- 3:18Speaker 1: And to your point, the last three opponents, when you
- 3:21Speaker 1: look at their rosters, were loaded with newbies, guys that
- 3:25Speaker 1: came from other places. Even as Sean Miller with Xavier
- 3:28Speaker 1: was talking about wanting to recruit guys who had been
- 3:30Speaker 1: to two other schools, he wanted that much maturity on
- 3:33Speaker 1: his roster, and Butler the same with that mana and
- 3:36Speaker 1: then to Paul Chris Holtman trying to put things back together,
- 3:39Speaker 1: there had thirteen new faces. I don't know if this
- 3:43Speaker 1: is you know, something you would be able to answer.
- 3:46Speaker 1: But do you feel like in some ways you have
- 3:49Speaker 1: a bit of an advantage in that you know your guys,
- 3:52Speaker 1: You've been working with most of them for two three years,
- 3:56Speaker 1: maybe four years, and in that sense, you're you know,
- 4:00Speaker 1: cohesion with your roster is maybe further along than say
- 4:05Speaker 1: Chris Holtman's with his crew.
- 4:07Speaker 2: Yeah, well, you know the I guess the it's the
- 4:09Speaker 2: new world we're in. I don't know that anyone. I
- 4:13Speaker 2: think in a perfect world, we would have established culture
- 4:18Speaker 2: and player development and things would be like the like
- 4:21Speaker 2: the old days where people would come into your program,
- 4:24Speaker 2: be with you for years, develop have continuity, have chemistry. Yeah,
- 4:30Speaker 2: but between the portal and nil where it's so it's
- 4:33Speaker 2: gotten so crazy the sport, whereas like your main fear
- 4:37Speaker 2: would be early entry to the NBA draft, it would
- 4:41Speaker 2: be your mau man, I'm a how long am I
- 4:43Speaker 2: going to have this player?
- 4:45Speaker 3: That's probably the third.
- 4:46Speaker 2: Thing you think about now, you know, uh, you actually
- 4:50Speaker 2: hope that's your problem that you lose players early to
- 4:53Speaker 2: the NBA, and not that you know you don't have
- 4:57Speaker 2: enough money to retain or recruit, or you know, players
- 5:02Speaker 2: just leave you via free agency because there's no restrictions
- 5:07Speaker 2: whatsoever in our sport and it's just a total wild
- 5:10Speaker 2: wild West out there. So I mean, you know, for us,
- 5:13Speaker 2: we were an interesting case study on I guess for
- 5:18Speaker 2: this year's team on should we have gone out and
- 5:21Speaker 2: gotten more older players based on how much that we
- 5:25Speaker 2: lost and or is it better for you to, you know,
- 5:30Speaker 2: hold on to younger players, freshmen to sophomores and retain
- 5:36Speaker 2: and keep continuity. I think at the end of our season,
- 5:39Speaker 2: you know, when it's all said and done, it's going
- 5:42Speaker 2: to impact the decisions that we make moving forward how
- 5:45Speaker 2: this year plays out for us.
- 5:46Speaker 3: But if you're in Chris Holtman's.
- 5:49Speaker 2: Situation where you're taken over for a team that was
- 5:52Speaker 2: really bad, you can go from really bad to a
- 5:55Speaker 2: top one hundred type of team really quickly, which is
- 6:00Speaker 2: the way he put that roster together, because there's so much,
- 6:04Speaker 2: so much better and mature and that you could see
- 6:07Speaker 2: the culture, you know, developing there. And then you had
- 6:10Speaker 2: somebody like like Sean Miller, who I think just went
- 6:15Speaker 2: out and got a lot of firepower on the perimeter
- 6:19Speaker 2: because he was missing it last year, and then you know,
- 6:24Speaker 2: was really hoping that he'd have better luck with front
- 6:27Speaker 2: court health, and unfortunately for him, he got bit, you know,
- 6:31Speaker 2: by that same injury bug in the front court. Hopefully
- 6:34Speaker 2: they get Fremantle back, but I don't know what the
- 6:37Speaker 2: best way to do it is going to be moving forward.
- 6:40Speaker 2: There's literally no rules in our sport. You know, from
- 6:43Speaker 2: reading Coach morris tweets, he's obviously been very active on Twitter,
- 6:48Speaker 2: you know, since the ballgame in particular, there's so much
- 6:51Speaker 2: chaos right now. It's tough tough to figure the best way.
- 6:55Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 6:56Speaker 1: Coach more also talking about, you know, the thing about
- 6:59Speaker 1: not Tampa with his players before they even go into
- 7:01Speaker 1: portal and even have to recruit your own players, which
- 7:05Speaker 1: maybe we'll get into that a little bit later on
- 7:07Speaker 1: Coach Hurley with us. This is the Yukon Men's Basketball
