- 0:00Speaker 1: This is Kiss Breakfast.
- 0:02Speaker 2: Yeah, our 7U Spotlight's going to present a very special
- 0:05Speaker 2: 70 years of Channel 7 this Sunday, 8pm on 7. Now,
- 0:11Speaker 2: she hasn't been there for that long.
- 0:13Speaker 3: No.
- 0:14Speaker 2: Sonia Kruger, 20 years though? 20 years, Sonia?
- 0:18Speaker 1: Mikey, yeah, yeah, pretty much close to that. Isn't it funny,
- 0:22Speaker 1: you know, when you think about it, 70 years. ago
- 0:26Speaker 1: we had three channels and now we've got i don't
- 0:30Speaker 1: know 47 streamers and we're still going we've got nothing
- 0:34Speaker 1: to watch.
- 0:35Speaker 2: I know i still remember when foxtel came out right
- 0:37Speaker 2: because we just grew up having what did you have
- 0:39Speaker 2: abc 7 9 10 yes on sbs yes right but
- 0:43Speaker 2: five in total yeah yeah and then fuck i remember
- 0:46Speaker 2: when we got just channel after channel after channel.
- 0:49Speaker 1: Yeah, I remember.
- 0:51Speaker 3: And you're so right, Sonia. I feel like we are
- 0:53Speaker 3: so inundated with shows and streaming services that sometimes it
- 0:58Speaker 3: just gets so overwhelming. I sat down on the couch
- 1:00Speaker 3: yesterday to watch something and then I just flicked for
- 1:03Speaker 3: like 40 minutes.
- 1:04Speaker 2: It couldn't land on anything and then I just went
- 1:06Speaker 2: to bed.
- 1:07Speaker 1: It's too overwhelming.
- 1:08Speaker 3: That's it.
- 1:09Speaker 1: We spend 45 minutes just looking for something to watch
- 1:11Speaker 1: and we don't watch anything. Whereas I think the thing
- 1:14Speaker 1: about when you look back at TV and it is
- 1:16Speaker 1: quite nostalgic, you know, the TV used to be the
- 1:20Speaker 1: central point of the room, this giant box. And people
- 1:23Speaker 1: used to have TV rooms and everybody would sit around
- 1:27Speaker 1: and watch the same thing and then talk about it
- 1:29Speaker 1: the next day. And when television was live, it was
- 1:32Speaker 1: great because, you know, the best thing about live television
- 1:34Speaker 1: is anything can happen. And the worst thing is anything
- 1:36Speaker 1: can happen. So, you know, um, Yeah, there's a lot
- 1:41Speaker 1: that's covered in the special, that's for sure. When you
- 1:44Speaker 1: think about things like royal weddings and huge news events,
- 1:49Speaker 1: to when reality TV first started. And somebody brought up
- 1:53Speaker 1: the other day Sylvania Waters. Oh, yeah.
- 1:56Speaker 3: What?
- 1:57Speaker 1: Sylvania Waters? Do you remember Sylvania Waters? Was that a
- 1:59Speaker 1: reality show? It was literally... It was. It was like
- 2:03Speaker 1: literally one of the first reality proper kind of fly
- 2:08Speaker 1: on the wall reality type shows around.
- 2:12Speaker 2: Yeah, it was on ABC, I think, and they were
- 2:14Speaker 2: like these Bogan family that lived in Sylvania waters in Sydney.
- 2:18Speaker 3: Was it as bad as The Shire?
- 2:20Speaker 2: Yeah, it was similar. Sonia, tell us for you, how
- 2:24Speaker 2: did you get started in telly? Because you were in
- 2:27Speaker 2: a movie, right? I'm not just making that up. You
- 2:30Speaker 2: were in Strictly Ballroom.
- 2:31Speaker 1: Yes. Yeah, I was. And then after Strictly Ballroom, I
- 2:35Speaker 1: realized I really wasn't probably a great dramatic actor, but
- 2:42Speaker 1: I loved the whole world of showbiz. And so Wonderworld,
- 2:45Speaker 1: which was this kids' magazine show, they used to advertise
- 2:48Speaker 1: in the paper and say, do you want to be
- 2:50Speaker 1: a TV star? So I sent them a ransom note
- 2:53Speaker 1: and I said, we've got Tina Sparkle, which was the
- 2:56Speaker 1: character I played in Strictly Ballroom. And if you want
- 2:58Speaker 1: to see her alive, call this number. So I ended
- 3:01Speaker 1: up getting that job and that was my first job
- 3:03Speaker 1: in TV. And then from there I went to work
- 3:06Speaker 1: on 11am, which was a, which was a morning kind
- 3:10Speaker 1: of news program on Channel 7, and we were regularly
- 3:13Speaker 1: outrated by Concepts in Mathematics on the ABC. So, look,
- 3:17Speaker 1: it wasn't a huge success, but it was my very
- 3:20Speaker 1: first job there. And I remember the guy who gave
- 3:22Speaker 1: it to me, Grant Rule, I'm forever sort of indebted
- 3:24Speaker 1: to him for giving me a start. Yeah, that's so.
- 3:28Speaker 2: It's so impressive.
- 3:29Speaker 3: You've been with The Seven Network for, obviously, two decades now,
- 3:32Speaker 3: and I think you even came back after leaving. And so, obviously,
- 3:37Speaker 3: you must have... You must have seen so much good stuff,
- 3:41Speaker 3: good news, so many exciting events. Has there been a
- 3:45Speaker 3: moment in television that has really stuck with you?
- 3:51Speaker 1: Oh, my goodness. Do you know, that's such a hard...
- 3:54Speaker 1: It's a great question, Amy, but it's such a hard
- 3:57Speaker 1: question to answer. I think the thing that has stuck
- 4:00Speaker 1: with me are the friendships that I've made. And what
- 4:05Speaker 1: we've done in the 70 Years Special on 7 is
- 4:08Speaker 1: we've got seven people who've been there, you know, for
- 4:11Speaker 1: a very long time. So we've got Bruce McIverney, Joe Criggs,
- 4:15Speaker 1: Michael Usher is hosting it, Georgie Parker, Larry Emder. Yeah. Effie,
- 4:21Speaker 1: you know, Mary Costas. Yeah. And they're all people, Natalie Barr,
- 4:27Speaker 1: they're all people that we are all actually really good
- 4:30Speaker 1: buddies and great friends. And I think people assume that
- 4:34Speaker 1: television is very dog-eat-dog and it's cutthroat and all of that.
- 4:38Speaker 1: But you actually, well, I can only speak for myself.
- 4:42Speaker 1: I have made some really amazing friends along the way.
- 4:46Speaker 1: And the fact that we all got to sit around
- 4:48Speaker 1: and kind of talk about those memories of television as kids,
- 4:52Speaker 1: when we were kids growing up and watching it. It's really–
- 4:56Speaker 1: it was a great, fun special to make. And it's
- 4:59Speaker 1: very warm and quite funny. I mean, we did talk
- 5:03Speaker 1: about a couple of highlights. For me, Dancing with the Stars,
- 5:06Speaker 1: when Tom Williams took his shirt off, right?
- 5:09Speaker 3: Yep.
- 5:09Speaker 1: Okay. How could we forget? Yep. And normally for me
- 5:13Speaker 1: to get a tradie to take their shirt off, I
- 5:15Speaker 1: have to pay cash up front. Yeah. You know, I–
- 5:19Speaker 1: I do quite a bit of unnecessary renovation at my place.
- 5:22Speaker 2: Yeah, for that reason.
- 5:23Speaker 1: Look, Tom was always on time. Unusual for a trader
- 5:27Speaker 1: to be on time for a job. But, you know,
- 5:29Speaker 1: Terry was. He'd turn up for rehearsal. But, you know,
- 5:31Speaker 1: memories like that. Working with Daryl on Dancing with the Stars.
- 5:35Speaker 1: I watched him on Hey Hey as a kid. So, yeah,
- 5:38Speaker 1: I mean, it was... quite amazing.
- 5:41Speaker 2: Hey, before we let you go, I think you could
- 5:43Speaker 2: help us settle this debate. Yesterday, Amy was saying she
- 5:46Speaker 2: wants to put up a Christmas tree now, on the
- 5:50Speaker 2: 8th of October.
- 5:51Speaker 3: No, I said I want to put it up sometime
- 5:54Speaker 3: in October. I don't normally do this, but I figured
- 5:58Speaker 3: I love my Christmas tree. I paid a lot of
- 6:00Speaker 3: money for it, and I've got to get more cost
- 6:02Speaker 3: per use out of it.
- 6:04Speaker 2: Now, I know you love Christmas, Sonia. When should it
- 6:07Speaker 2: go up? I say 1st of December.
- 6:08Speaker 3: Plus, I love Christmas.
- 6:10Speaker 1: Oh, no. December's too late. No, no, no. You've got
- 6:13Speaker 1: to get into the Christmas spirit much, much earlier than that.
- 6:16Speaker 1: That's right. I'm a November person. Yes. I like November
- 6:19Speaker 1: because it's like Thursday. You know how you get Thursday
- 6:22Speaker 1: night fever and you sort of start celebrating the weekend
- 6:25Speaker 1: on a Thursday night?
- 6:26Speaker 2: I'm going to do that tonight.
- 6:27Speaker 1: For me, that's... That's what November is. November is let's
- 6:30Speaker 1: start celebrating Christmas now. Yeah.
- 6:32Speaker 2: All right. All right. Well, there we go.
- 6:34Speaker 3: You're outnumbered.
- 6:35Speaker 2: Well, if you go and look at our socials, our
- 6:36Speaker 2: Kiss socials, by the way, most people are agreeing with you.
- 6:39Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 6:40Speaker 2: Or women.
- 6:41Speaker 3: Yeah, of course, because women bring the cheer and the
- 6:43Speaker 3: Christmas spirit.
- 6:45Speaker 2: Hey, Sonia, we'll be checking it out. Seven News Spotlight
- 6:47Speaker 2: presenting a very special 70 Years of Seven episode. TV event,
- 6:52Speaker 2: Sunday night, 8pm on Channel 7. She's been there for
- 6:55Speaker 2: 20 of the 70. We'll be watching, Sonia.
- 7:02Speaker 1: Thanks, guys. Thanks, Sonia.
