- 0:03Speaker 1: All right man.
- 0:03Speaker 2: Boutlet Cap Podcast, bout Let Cap Show Jaminary five seven.
- 0:06Speaker 2: We in San Diego backstage at SeaWorld with my brother
- 0:09Speaker 2: Paul Wall Baby. Of course you've been doing a lot
- 0:15Speaker 2: of these, these SeaWorld shows, be going crazy, but.
- 0:18Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, many went viral.
- 0:21Speaker 2: People camping out on the on the island looking at
- 0:24Speaker 2: him from behind.
- 0:25Speaker 3: That's crazy, man, that's crazy. It's a dope experience. First
- 0:28Speaker 3: of all, you know, we've been in the game for
- 0:30Speaker 3: a long time, me and a lot of the other
- 0:32Speaker 3: artists for performing sea World. So when you come here,
- 0:35Speaker 3: it's a family a venue SeaWorld. You could bring your kids.
- 0:39Speaker 3: You know, it's not gonna be nothing crazy. You know,
- 0:42Speaker 3: it's gonna be a great show. And of course we're
- 0:44Speaker 3: on the water. The weather's great. You can make a
- 0:46Speaker 3: whole day.
- 0:47Speaker 1: Out of it. So it's really dark.
- 0:49Speaker 3: I wish, you know, I could have went to shows
- 0:51Speaker 3: like this when I was a kid. And it brings
- 0:53Speaker 3: me back to when we had Astra World. They had
- 0:55Speaker 3: Astra World Concerts series in Houston, like New Edition. People
- 0:58Speaker 3: like that will come perform at ash World and it's like, man,
- 1:01Speaker 3: you know, it's something that has been missing for a
- 1:03Speaker 3: while I'm glad they brought it back here one hundred percent.
- 1:05Speaker 2: You know, you are a part of like making a
- 1:09Speaker 2: lot of things mainstream and hip hop. Early on, obviously
- 1:13Speaker 2: grills would be the main thing, and it's something that's
- 1:15Speaker 2: kind of stood the test of time in terms of
- 1:19Speaker 2: just like I mean, people are not getting perms, you
- 1:21Speaker 2: know what I'm saying, Like, Yeah, did you ever is
- 1:24Speaker 2: your permanent?
- 1:24Speaker 1: No?
- 1:25Speaker 2: No, no, no, you pop them out.
- 1:27Speaker 1: I changed them out every day of the week, depending
- 1:28Speaker 1: on watch I'm wearing.
- 1:30Speaker 2: And even just like you know, obviously shout out to
- 1:33Speaker 2: DJ Screw, but like I think of like a whole
- 1:35Speaker 2: entire other generation that was like they came up on
- 1:37Speaker 2: the Michael five thousand watch tapes and it's the Chopping
- 1:40Speaker 2: Screw version of people's champ and all of those remnants.
- 1:44Speaker 2: You're still hearing people's albums, you know what I'm saying.
- 1:46Speaker 2: Do you feel like you get your flowers for the
- 1:49Speaker 2: influence you've had just on like hip hop culture, because you,
- 1:52Speaker 2: I mean, it's still there.
- 1:54Speaker 3: I mean I do definitely some, but not really. But
- 1:57Speaker 3: I mean I got allergies, so I ain't looking for
- 1:59Speaker 3: the flowers. Yeah, I'm saying I mean, you know, I
- 2:01Speaker 3: really don't do it for that, especially like when it
- 2:03Speaker 3: comes to the grills, I kind of get forgotten or
- 2:07Speaker 3: left out of the conversation.
- 2:08Speaker 1: But that's fine. I didn't do it for me.
- 2:10Speaker 3: It's for my partner, my boy Johnny, you know, and
- 2:13Speaker 3: he definitely get to shine.
- 2:14Speaker 1: And that's what it's all about. Man.
- 2:16Speaker 3: I think about, you know, me selling grills and all
- 2:18Speaker 3: the people I sold grills to it a different style
- 2:20Speaker 3: of grills.
- 2:21Speaker 1: Or how far we took it.
- 2:22Speaker 3: But it was a team effort of me and Johnny,
- 2:24Speaker 3: and that's part of why. Like you know, there were
- 2:26Speaker 3: occasions early on, like when I was in my prime,
- 2:29Speaker 3: first coming out, like well maybe we should change the
- 2:32Speaker 3: name of the store to this Johnny and Paul Paul
- 2:34Speaker 3: and Johnny's it should it be Paul Wall's Grills. And
- 2:37Speaker 3: I always felt like, you know, if it's too associated
- 2:40Speaker 3: with myself or any rapper, then with the ups and downs.
- 2:45Speaker 2: Ups and downs of the industry for his career, maybe
- 2:47Speaker 2: you're indo catching a beef with somebody, Like.
- 2:49Speaker 1: I don't want that. I don't want that to affect that,
- 2:51Speaker 1: you know.
- 2:52Speaker 3: Let let the grills be its own thing and just
- 2:55Speaker 3: to see Johnny's vision two for a lot of this.
- 2:58Speaker 3: You know, I kind of have a you know, certain visions,
- 3:01Speaker 3: but Johnny will see like a grandiose.
- 3:03Speaker 1: Thing, like even at the store how it is now.
- 3:06Speaker 3: I was absolutely cool having the kiowskin them all right,
- 3:09Speaker 3: or having you know, linoleum tile floors, and Johnny like, nah,
- 3:13Speaker 3: we need a Usati molding crown mode, you know, Johnny.
- 3:16Speaker 3: So Johnny will see a vision sometimes that maybe I
- 3:19Speaker 3: can't even see. So it's been awesome and amazing having
- 3:23Speaker 3: a partner and to see, you know, how far Johnny's
- 3:25Speaker 3: come to be his own personality where you know, in
- 3:29Speaker 3: his own you know, his own branding of who he
- 3:32Speaker 3: is for sure all reason as the Johnny.
- 3:33Speaker 1: Hey Johnny, I'm trying to link with this rapper. Oh yeah, yeah,
- 3:37Speaker 1: So it's been great.
- 3:38Speaker 2: You I feel like peak, you know, let's say two
- 3:43Speaker 2: thousand and seven, two thousand and eight, two thousand and six,
- 3:45Speaker 2: two thousand and five, that kind of era. What is
- 3:48Speaker 2: the craziest call you get where someone's in town? Is
- 3:51Speaker 2: there like a crazy like, Okay, I got to take
- 3:54Speaker 2: this person into the shop. It's two in the morning,
- 3:56Speaker 2: give me the crazy. The craziest grill shopping escapade you
- 4:01Speaker 2: had to go on because you were the guy back then.
- 4:04Speaker 2: Now people will call Johnny, Yeah, but back then they're
- 4:06Speaker 2: calling Paul. They're like, Yo, Paul, I'm in Houston. What
- 4:09Speaker 2: were we doing.
- 4:10Speaker 3: There's definitely a few, you know, Venus and Serena Williams,
- 4:13Speaker 3: those are I mean, when you have the icons who
- 4:16Speaker 3: aren't like the typical person, you would think if it's
- 4:18Speaker 3: a rapper, then you might associate them with wearing a grill.
- 4:21Speaker 3: But when you get some of these athletes, especially like
- 4:24Speaker 3: I said.
- 4:24Speaker 1: Serena Serena Williams all time.
- 4:27Speaker 3: You know, that's that's awesome to be able to facilitate that,
- 4:31Speaker 3: to make her a grill. Now she wants a grill.
- 4:33Speaker 3: She can get good from anybody in the world, but
- 4:35Speaker 3: to one for me, you know, it's like very huge honor.
- 4:40Speaker 3: But you know, I think maybe Kanye West. Kanye West
- 4:43Speaker 3: is definitely one of the grill escapades where it started
- 4:47Speaker 3: starting with Kanye West in New York.
- 4:49Speaker 2: Did you have to mold them?
- 4:51Speaker 3: I did his mold in New York at a King
- 4:52Speaker 3: magazine photo shoot when it was like maybe twenty or
- 4:55Speaker 3: thirty of us for the coming Kings of the year,
- 4:58Speaker 3: somebody who was a he was there as a good
- 5:01Speaker 3: music CEO king, and there's somebody there as an athlete king,
- 5:04Speaker 3: up and coming king, who's an author, up and coming king,
- 5:06Speaker 3: who's whatever this and that, the banker or whatever. So
- 5:10Speaker 3: it was a room full of who's who were people
- 5:12Speaker 3: who were just on the rise or just killing it.
- 5:15Speaker 3: And you know, he walks in and it's a very
- 5:17Speaker 3: industry type event where there's music playing in the lounge before,
- 5:22Speaker 3: before this, before drive slow, this is my first time
- 5:24Speaker 3: ever meeting. And he walks in and he you know it,
- 5:26Speaker 3: He's like, man, it's supposed to be a hip hop event, man, and.
- 5:29Speaker 1: Where's the where's the ciphers at with a hip hop?
- 5:32Speaker 1: There's a hip hop?
- 5:32Speaker 2: And where's a hip hop?
- 5:33Speaker 1: Hip hop?
- 5:34Speaker 3: He busts out with a freestyle, and of course he's
- 5:37Speaker 3: he's still Kanye West before his second album, so he
- 5:40Speaker 3: still is themand but he's not definitely.
- 5:42Speaker 2: Not after between the two years.
- 5:45Speaker 1: Yes, yes, so he definitely was the man.
- 5:47Speaker 3: But it's not like where he is now that the
- 5:48Speaker 3: Kanye we know now. And he busts out a freestyle
- 5:51Speaker 3: and then that's it. Everybody is just in awe and
- 5:54Speaker 3: He's like, man, I'm trying to kick a cipher off. Man,
- 5:56Speaker 3: nobody gonna back door.
- 5:57Speaker 1: Man. I'm you know, of course, I'm.
- 6:00Speaker 3: I come out with my freestyle and like, okay, you know,
- 6:02Speaker 3: of course there's a little camaraderie there, the hip hop camaraderie,
- 6:05Speaker 3: and then you know, we're go and have a little
- 6:07Speaker 3: side conversation about the grills and a few other things,
- 6:10Speaker 3: and he's like, hey, you know, I like your grills,
- 6:12Speaker 3: this and that him as well as don see a
- 6:14Speaker 3: few of the other people that are with him. And
- 6:16Speaker 3: I'm like, hey, look, I got the grill modes right
- 6:18Speaker 3: now in my bank.
- 6:18Speaker 1: We can do this right here. Now, come on, let
- 6:20Speaker 1: me get your mold. And I was on the way
- 6:24Speaker 1: out to the airport, so I did his mold real quick.
- 6:26Speaker 1: You know.
- 6:27Speaker 3: It came back to Houston and he said, you know, hey,
- 6:29Speaker 3: I'm coming to Houston soon to perform with the Scarface
- 6:33Speaker 3: at the Texas Beach Party, which is the Capple Beach Party,
- 6:36Speaker 3: but they changed the name and this actually was the
- 6:38Speaker 3: last Capple Beach Party there ever was in Galveston, and
- 6:42Speaker 3: you know, he was coming down there in a few
- 6:44Speaker 3: weeks to perform at that. So we made his grills,
- 6:48Speaker 3: and you know, after he performs at the beach party,
- 6:51Speaker 3: he's at Mike Dean's house in Houston. Is big shout
- 6:54Speaker 3: out Mike Dean and he's like, Okay, you know, bring
- 6:58Speaker 3: bring the grills over here.
- 6:59Speaker 1: It's like three in the morning, four in the morning.
- 7:00Speaker 3: They're mixing Diamonds off Forever Diamonds from Cleon And now,
- 7:06Speaker 3: I've been in a lot of studio sessions with a
- 7:07Speaker 3: lot of different type of musicians, but this was very unique,
- 7:11Speaker 3: extremely unique, and I've never been in a situation like
- 7:13Speaker 3: this where you know, you got Mike Dean, perhaps the
- 7:16Speaker 3: greatest engineer mixer.
- 7:18Speaker 1: Of all time.
- 7:19Speaker 2: He's in the combo.
- 7:20Speaker 1: Yeah, and he's in.
- 7:21Speaker 3: There like doing changing this and that, and Kanye West
- 7:25Speaker 3: will be like, no, turn you know such and such down,
- 7:28Speaker 3: and it'll you know, say, the song is, you know,
- 7:30Speaker 3: four minutes long. He's turning something down. It's at the
- 7:32Speaker 3: three minute forty five second mark. Okay, well they're listening
- 7:35Speaker 3: to the whole song start to end again again, start
- 7:39Speaker 3: to end again again.
- 7:42Speaker 1: I personally we heard it about one hundred times that night,
- 7:46Speaker 1: and we were at the end of the mixing session.
- 7:49Speaker 3: So just seeing them do all of that, like, and
- 7:51Speaker 3: just seeing how dedicated he was to his craft. And
- 7:54Speaker 3: he wasn't like overwhelmed or like, you know, it wasn't
- 7:59Speaker 3: like too much. It was just like he was involved
- 8:03Speaker 3: in every part of Now, me, I couldn't from the
- 8:06Speaker 3: first time I walked in. So when you hear the
- 8:07Speaker 3: song now, it all sounds the same to me. But
- 8:11Speaker 3: sonically he could tell every difference. And he's like, no,
- 8:14Speaker 3: you know, I need to change this. No whatever, you know,
- 8:16Speaker 3: whatever jargon or engineer talk they were talking. He knew
- 8:19Speaker 3: all of that, and they were having their own conversation.
- 8:21Speaker 3: And I'm just like me and good were like, man,
- 8:23Speaker 3: I don't know what they talking about, but I need
- 8:25Speaker 3: to learn that language. And you know, just being able to,
- 8:27Speaker 3: you know, get him hiss grills, and then that turned
- 8:29Speaker 3: into you know, eventually slow.
- 8:32Speaker 2: All right, another podcast brought to you by odd Socks.

- 10:03Speaker 2: And one of my things, I was going to say,
- 10:04Speaker 2: the drive slow, Like, at what point in time do
- 10:07Speaker 2: you get sent that record? Are you in the studio
- 10:09Speaker 2: with him? Is it something to get sent over email?
- 10:11Speaker 1: Like playing Pat? Shout out playing Pat?
- 10:14Speaker 3: He you know, he managed kick cutting a bunch of artists,
- 10:16Speaker 3: but he was He tried to sign me to Death Jam.
- 10:18Speaker 3: It didn't work out, but he still kind of mentored
- 10:20Speaker 3: me and gave me a lot of advice, especially when
- 10:23Speaker 3: it came to you know, moving and wiggling in the industry,
- 10:26Speaker 3: and you know, so he would give me a lot
- 10:28Speaker 3: of big bro advice.
- 10:29Speaker 1: And you know, eventually he's like, hey, I seen.
- 10:31Speaker 3: You met Kanye. I seen you man. Whatever you got
- 10:34Speaker 3: him some girls, that's what's up.
- 10:35Speaker 2: You know.
- 10:36Speaker 3: He said he like your flow and this and that,
- 10:38Speaker 3: you know, you down to do a verse on one
- 10:40Speaker 3: of his albums. And it's like, of course, yeah, of course, wow,
- 10:43Speaker 3: who would.
- 10:43Speaker 1: Say no to that? But you know, and he's like,
- 10:45Speaker 1: you know, hey man, he might take it off, he
- 10:48Speaker 1: might not use it.
- 10:49Speaker 3: He's very, very very particular about what he uses and
- 10:52Speaker 3: what he doesn't use, he might use just a portion
- 10:55Speaker 3: of what you say, you know, he kind of he's
- 10:57Speaker 3: kind of setting me up for.
- 10:58Speaker 1: If I do the verses he donna I can. He
- 11:00Speaker 1: don't use it. I'm not mad, but I wouldn't be
- 11:02Speaker 1: mad either way.
- 11:03Speaker 3: It goes because I just appreciate the opportunity, you know
- 11:05Speaker 3: that he would give me. I mean from Houston people
- 11:07Speaker 3: at that time, people like me don't get a shot
- 11:10Speaker 3: to do a song on Kanye West or artist of
- 11:12Speaker 3: that caliber, you know, unless your scarface.
- 11:14Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying.
- 11:14Speaker 3: So to be able to do that, he send me
- 11:17Speaker 3: playing past, send me to beat. I did my verse,
- 11:19Speaker 3: which actually was I had wrote the verse already for
- 11:23Speaker 3: Sitting Sideways.
- 11:25Speaker 2: Y'alls about to say, it's super you did you on that?
- 11:27Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 11:28Speaker 3: Yeah, that actually when I when I wrote Sitting Sideways,
- 11:30Speaker 3: this was the first verse I wrote to Sitting Sideways,
- 11:33Speaker 3: but I didn't really write it to the tempo of
- 11:35Speaker 3: the beat of Sitting Sideways.
- 11:37Speaker 2: So the verse that ended up on Drive Slow was
- 11:39Speaker 2: the original first verse you wrote for Sitting Side.
- 11:41Speaker 3: Yes, I used to, man, I used to. This is
- 11:43Speaker 3: before I was like a heavy smoker. So my brain
- 11:45Speaker 3: would be moving like a thousand miles a minute.
- 11:48Speaker 1: And I would get so distracted by anything.
- 11:51Speaker 3: I might get distracted by the tie or you know,
- 11:53Speaker 3: the door knob of a sound and the beat.
- 11:55Speaker 1: Anything.
- 11:55Speaker 3: I would just get so distracted. So I would just
- 11:57Speaker 3: get the tempo, go sit in my car and write verse.
- 12:00Speaker 3: That's what I did. I wrote the verse that you
- 12:01Speaker 3: hear on dry slow. I wrote that for sitting sideways.
- 12:04Speaker 3: When I go in and lay it the sitting Sideways beat,
- 12:07Speaker 3: it's a little fast, so when I delivering.
- 12:10Speaker 1: Later, the vocals don't exactly look off. Yeah.
- 12:13Speaker 3: And my boy Tim Ferris was like, hey, the verse hard,
- 12:17Speaker 3: but it don't really go.
- 12:18Speaker 1: To the temple. Man. I think he should write a
- 12:20Speaker 1: new verse.
- 12:20Speaker 3: So I wrote it to verses for sitting sideways, and
- 12:23Speaker 3: I kept it in my pocket for just in occasions
- 12:26Speaker 3: such as they came yeah man, and I sent it.
- 12:28Speaker 3: I did the verse, send it in playing patterns like yeah,
- 12:30Speaker 3: he like it, you know, but he wants you to
- 12:32Speaker 3: come out here and lay it in La.
- 12:34Speaker 1: I come to La laid.
- 12:36Speaker 3: And the whole time I'm thinking I'm getting punked, like
- 12:39Speaker 3: NTV punked with Ashton Kutcher. You know, I'm we get
- 12:42Speaker 3: off the plane, we come down to escalators. It's two
- 12:44Speaker 3: LA sheriffs that pulled me to side and go to
- 12:47Speaker 3: the side. They think we're like smuggling drugs or something,
- 12:49Speaker 3: and I'm like, I knew I was getting I knew
- 12:51Speaker 3: this was too good to.
- 12:52Speaker 2: Be tru Yeah, yeah, man.
- 12:55Speaker 3: And then I'm I'm talking crazy to the to the
- 12:57Speaker 3: police and Goud's like, what are you doing? You're about
- 12:59Speaker 3: to get a beat up? And I'm like where asked
- 13:02Speaker 3: the cuts at? And then you know, next thing, you know,
- 13:04Speaker 3: I'm not getting punk, but yeah, yeah, I apologize. I
- 13:09Speaker 3: don't want no smoke. Iologize, and then you know, from
- 13:12Speaker 3: there we go. You know, I'm in a limo going
- 13:14Speaker 3: to the local car service going to the UH to
- 13:18Speaker 3: the studio, and we ended up getting pulled over and
- 13:21Speaker 3: I'm like they couldn't give me the first time, so
- 13:23Speaker 3: this is the plan B. And but we're right in
- 13:26Speaker 3: front of the studio and I asked the hey, man,
- 13:28Speaker 3: can I get out because it was like a traffic ticket?
- 13:31Speaker 1: Can I get out?
- 13:31Speaker 3: Can I go to the studio? This is where I'm
- 13:33Speaker 3: trying to go. He lets me out. He's like, yeah,
- 13:35Speaker 3: I'm not giving you the ticket. I'm giving human ticket.
- 13:36Speaker 3: So I'm like, I'm out. And then I go in
- 13:39Speaker 3: the studio. It's a little for asking cutcher and you
- 13:41Speaker 3: know it's.
- 13:43Speaker 1: Yeah, he's in there. He was downstairs recording the song
- 13:46Speaker 1: he had with NAS.
- 13:47Speaker 2: Yeah, major, we major. It was the one with the game.
- 13:51Speaker 2: But what was the name of the one on? But
- 13:52Speaker 2: it's yeah, same album, we major the song with us.
- 13:57Speaker 1: Yeah, man, I don't even remember. It's all like a
- 13:59Speaker 1: blu but it's all clear, you know what I'm saying.
- 14:02Speaker 3: And then I go upstairs lay my verse and he's like,
- 14:04Speaker 3: I want you to do some other stuff. So I
- 14:06Speaker 3: do whatever you tell me to do. And I'm still
- 14:09Speaker 3: just I'm prepared for the album to come out.
- 14:12Speaker 1: And yeah, and I'll never forget.
- 14:15Speaker 3: DJ Drama called me and this was the night before
- 14:18Speaker 3: the album comes out. This is when albums came out
- 14:20Speaker 3: on Tuesdays. He's called on Monday night and he's like, hey,
- 14:23Speaker 3: he's at the list official listening party. He's like, yo,
- 14:26Speaker 3: you kind of album and I'm like, I don't know.
- 14:28Speaker 1: That I mean out yet. I ain't seen one name
- 14:30Speaker 1: on the credits. I don't know. And also I know
- 14:34Speaker 1: from just being on Swish House tapes.
- 14:36Speaker 3: Sometimes people will get on Swish House mixtapes back in
- 14:38Speaker 3: the day, then they go tell the whole.
- 14:40Speaker 2: Hood and then they.
- 14:42Speaker 3: Get taken off, and then you look like a fool
- 14:45Speaker 3: because you you know, man, you ain't on there, you know.
- 14:47Speaker 3: So I don't want to just be too excited about
- 14:49Speaker 3: being on there. Internally I'm excited, but I don't want
- 14:51Speaker 3: to be album pubby. Yeah, I'm I'm on, I'm on it,
- 14:54Speaker 3: and then he takes me off for whatever reason.
- 14:57Speaker 2: So you guys do the video and then the video
- 14:58Speaker 2: versions different than the version of came out on the album.
- 15:00Speaker 1: Yes a little bit.
- 15:01Speaker 2: I'm super mad that that's not on a CD somewhere,
- 15:05Speaker 2: but the video version was different. Crazy, crazy man, such
- 15:10Speaker 2: a this is my favorite Kanye late registration is my
- 15:13Speaker 2: that's my one. But yeah, that's crazy. Talk to me.
- 15:17Speaker 1: This year? Was it?
- 15:18Speaker 2: Earlier? This year we lost Michael Watts, who obviously a legend,
- 15:23Speaker 2: somebody who you know, the founder of Swisher House, somebody
- 15:27Speaker 2: who you had such a strong relationship with. He had
- 15:29Speaker 2: a lot to do with.
- 15:29Speaker 1: Your career since I was fourteen years old, thirteen years old.
- 15:33Speaker 2: Yeah, man, can you just speak to Michael Wats because
- 15:37Speaker 2: I feel like when we think about these legendary labels,
- 15:41Speaker 2: will always hear the rap A lots will always hear
- 15:43Speaker 2: no limit cash money. But you know, a lot of
- 15:45Speaker 2: times I think Swisher House kind of falls through the cracks.
- 15:47Speaker 2: And I think a lot of textas stuff for whatever reason,
- 15:50Speaker 2: when we think about the historical contexts of hip hop
- 15:52Speaker 2: will fall through the cracks with Swisher House, you want
- 15:54Speaker 2: to talk about a powerhouse, man man.
- 15:56Speaker 3: Part of it is because I think Switsher House as
- 15:59Speaker 3: a label was mostly just me and Mike Jones.
- 16:02Speaker 1: And I don't want to say just.
- 16:03Speaker 2: Me and Mike Jones right moment.
- 16:05Speaker 3: The movement is and I mean, I don't know any
- 16:09Speaker 3: other time in hip hop, you know. And I don't
- 16:11Speaker 3: mean any disrespect or discredit to anybody else, but I
- 16:14Speaker 3: just want to give my guy his respect and his
- 16:16Speaker 3: proper due honor. I don't know any other time in
- 16:19Speaker 3: hip hop where a DJ found and discovered four artists,
- 16:24Speaker 3: at least four artists, and took them from the absolute
- 16:28Speaker 3: very beginning. I don't mean four established artists who are
- 16:31Speaker 3: already platinum, but four artists who had never put out
- 16:35Speaker 3: anything commercially ever molded them, helped them build their fan
- 16:39Speaker 3: base to become four platinum artists. Myself, Mike Jones, Slim
- 16:44Speaker 3: Thug could be in there. And then also you know
- 16:46Speaker 3: with Little Kiki come into the Swish House as an
- 16:49Speaker 3: artist too, and you know it helped give him another
- 16:53Speaker 3: around era to keep him going. Of course he's still going,
- 16:56Speaker 3: you know. And then there's all the other people that
- 16:58Speaker 3: were there as well who had amazing underground careers or
- 17:02Speaker 3: independent careers like Jade.
- 17:03Speaker 1: Dog or Archie Lee or.
- 17:06Speaker 3: Little Mario or there's there's a lot of man a
- 17:09Speaker 3: lot of artists. Man in the Swiss House really facilitated
- 17:12Speaker 3: something for us and a lot of.
- 17:14Speaker 1: Texts music did Man, he definitely deserves a lot of credits.
- 17:17Speaker 2: Were by surprise for his passing or did he have
- 17:19Speaker 2: his health?
- 17:20Speaker 1: Absolutely? I know he was, you know before he passed away.
- 17:23Speaker 3: You know, there were definitely signs because he was in
- 17:26Speaker 3: the hospital for something else, but you know, they wouldn't say, oh,
- 17:29Speaker 3: you know, he's about to be about to pass away,
- 17:31Speaker 3: or is this serious? You know, And I don't know
- 17:32Speaker 3: if they didn't know or they just didn't want to
- 17:34Speaker 3: share that. Also, you know, with you know, when the
- 17:36Speaker 3: words gets around, it just spreads some time. Yeah, yeah,
- 17:42Speaker 3: so man, but it definitely it definitely hit me like
- 17:45Speaker 3: a ton of bricks out of nowhere where it's like, wow,
- 17:48Speaker 3: we had no idea, but you know it's we had
- 17:51Speaker 3: a lot of great times together man, and just everything
- 17:54Speaker 3: he did for me. I mean, I can't imagine how
- 17:57Speaker 3: my life would be without Michael five thousand wats Man.
- 18:00Speaker 2: Yeah, man, rest in peace. Such a legend. When you
- 18:02Speaker 2: think back to that era, that five oh four oh
- 18:06Speaker 2: six eras, it was such a it was like, I
- 18:10Speaker 2: just remember, like everybody an album from Phoenix. So I
- 18:14Speaker 2: remember every record store, everybody would have the Screwed and
- 18:17Speaker 2: chop tapes. There would be the chop Not slot that
- 18:20Speaker 2: everybody was doing their own version of them.
- 18:22Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 18:23Speaker 2: And I just remember like the Mike Jones album and
- 18:26Speaker 2: your album the Posters being everywhere.
- 18:29Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 18:30Speaker 2: But when you think about that class, like you said earlier,
- 18:32Speaker 2: make a millionaire yourself, slim thug Mike Jones, When you're
- 18:38Speaker 2: in the middle of that and you kind of you know,
- 18:40Speaker 2: the Source magazine cover happens, and there's so much, so
- 18:43Speaker 2: much commercial crossover happens, do you kind of feel like
- 18:45Speaker 2: you're you're do you know that you're in the middle
- 18:47Speaker 2: of like a historical run for your city, like cause
- 18:49Speaker 2: it or because sometimes we're living this shit so we
- 18:52Speaker 2: don't have to take time to kind of breathe.
- 18:55Speaker 3: And kind of I remember when we performed still Tipping
- 18:58Speaker 3: on one O six in part and we're walking to
- 19:01Speaker 3: the stage, and this is like a key moment where
- 19:04Speaker 3: it like it's like notched in my mind of Slimp
- 19:08Speaker 3: the you know, saying, hey man, we on one O
- 19:12Speaker 3: six in Park Bro, we made it. Now I remember
- 19:15Speaker 3: all the other times I thought I made it. The
- 19:17Speaker 3: first time I ever heard myself on the radio, which
- 19:20Speaker 3: is me and come in or did a freestyle with
- 19:23Speaker 3: Michael Michael Wats was actually rapping. This is the first
- 19:25Speaker 3: time he ever wrapped on the mixtape.
- 19:27Speaker 1: We we did.
- 19:28Speaker 3: We did an intro for his radio show and he
- 19:31Speaker 3: would play it before his mix when he would mixed.
- 19:34Speaker 3: But Mad had her track to the box, Yeah, shout
- 19:38Speaker 3: out to the box. Mad had he had the after
- 19:40Speaker 3: Michael Wats would do the nighttime. Now Mad had her
- 19:43Speaker 3: did the afternoon so at.
- 19:45Speaker 2: So he played he did? Did he play that version
- 19:47Speaker 2: of his sound different?
- 19:49Speaker 1: Now Man had her played it? Because Wats was on
- 19:53Speaker 1: there rapping.
- 19:54Speaker 3: But still I remember taking my god sister Nina and
- 19:57Speaker 3: she went to Prayerview and we were in the car
- 19:59Speaker 3: and antoin on in wes Lily, York, and I was
- 20:01Speaker 3: We're on the way to Prayer of You and I
- 20:04Speaker 3: remember hearing it on the radio, like, man, that's that's me.
- 20:08Speaker 2: I'm on the radio.
- 20:10Speaker 3: This is crazy, uh, you know, and I remember feeling
- 20:13Speaker 3: like I made it, but it was so fleeting, because
- 20:15Speaker 3: you know, the feeling went away, and then it's like
- 20:17Speaker 3: I called here You're a man the radio.
- 20:19Speaker 1: Nope, ain't here. You're a man. Readio, Nope, ain't here.
- 20:21Speaker 1: You lying, you ain't on.
- 20:22Speaker 3: It's like, man, I was on the radio, but nobody knows,
- 20:25Speaker 3: you know. So I remember thinking how that when is
- 20:28Speaker 3: this gonna happen again? And uh and then you know,
- 20:31Speaker 3: I remember when we signed a deal with mad had
- 20:33Speaker 3: it later on and our song and Love with My Money.
- 20:36Speaker 2: Became b Yeah, that's a big record.
- 20:40Speaker 3: They played the hell out of that on the radio,
- 20:42Speaker 3: and that was another time where it's like, Okay, we
- 20:44Speaker 3: made it, you know. And then I mean, even through
- 20:46Speaker 3: all this time, we do sold our shows. We'd have
- 20:49Speaker 3: you know, meet and grease where the lines are out
- 20:51Speaker 3: the door. That there, crazy bud.
- 20:52Speaker 2: You guys are wearing those headbands.
- 20:54Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, we should have had all We should have
- 20:58Speaker 3: had some brandy ones and we were at a time.
- 21:00Speaker 2: Shout out to our brothers at hard Dean man OTTs family.
- 21:03Speaker 2: Of course, they've been sponsoring the podcast for years now.
- 21:06Speaker 2: You've been seeing the mic flag for years now. Want
- 21:08Speaker 2: to give a shout out to our brothers. I just
- 21:10Speaker 2: was in Vegas. I had to pull up all right. Look,
- 21:12Speaker 2: it's the number one dispensary in the world. When I
- 21:15Speaker 2: tell you, you walk in that thing and the bud tenders
- 21:18Speaker 2: are great. They take care of you immediately. The selection
- 21:21Speaker 2: is great. So when you go to Vegas, you get
- 21:23Speaker 2: into that cab, you get into that uber immediately, say
- 21:25Speaker 2: take me to Hardean. Don't know what they're doing, all right?
- 21:27Speaker 2: They go get you right, all right, the number one
- 21:29Speaker 2: premium cannabis dispensary in the world. They just got me right.
- 21:32Speaker 2: I was just in town for Raffi's birthday. Had to
- 21:35Speaker 2: pull up, get right, this nice little one to one
- 21:38Speaker 2: Hardean jersey. These are not available, all right. Shout out
- 21:42Speaker 2: to them, man, all right, salute to the family. Follow
- 21:44Speaker 2: him on Instagram. Hardean Underscore Las Vegas. All right, let's
- 21:47Speaker 2: get back to the podcast. Do you look back at
- 21:50Speaker 2: do you ever think about like the kind of the
- 21:52Speaker 2: what if about you and Chamellionaire and like what like
- 21:54Speaker 2: I mean, obviously everybody ended up doing really well. Yeah, everybody.
- 21:58Speaker 2: I mean, he's man, bro.
- 22:00Speaker 3: At the time I was, I was more than happy.
- 22:03Speaker 3: I never saw a vision from my own success. I
- 22:06Speaker 3: never saw that. It really honestly took T Ferris telling
- 22:10Speaker 3: me when me and come in go on separate ways.
- 22:12Speaker 3: T Fairs telling me, hey, Bro, I feel it in
- 22:14Speaker 3: my heart. Your best days are in front of you.
- 22:16Speaker 3: They're not behind you. You got a ceilings up here.
- 22:20Speaker 3: You think you're ceiling here. Your ceiling is up here.
- 22:23Speaker 3: You just got to keep going. And him giving He's
- 22:25Speaker 3: a T. Fairs, the first person ever in my life
- 22:27Speaker 3: that believed in me.
- 22:28Speaker 1: They really gave.
- 22:29Speaker 2: Me Megan for sore.
- 22:32Speaker 3: But you know, with come in there, I was more
- 22:34Speaker 3: than happy being in a duo where on the sidekick
- 22:38Speaker 3: or I'm getting pressures on you guys right absolutely, and
- 22:42Speaker 3: you know what I'm saying. And it was amazing to
- 22:45Speaker 3: have that run with somebody that I grew up with
- 22:48Speaker 3: my whole life. I grew up with him, you know,
- 22:49Speaker 3: So my first time in the studio, first time on stage,
- 22:52Speaker 3: first time freestyling at school lunch table and on the
- 22:56Speaker 3: bus was all with command there, So you know, to
- 22:59Speaker 3: be able to see the ascension and rise with him
- 23:02Speaker 3: was something that was like, for sure, a dream come true.
- 23:04Speaker 3: And I never saw beyond that, but Comedian saw beyond that,
- 23:08Speaker 3: and other people saw beyond that. And so when we
- 23:10Speaker 3: you know, and I also think about how it is
- 23:12Speaker 3: like what we were.
- 23:13Speaker 1: Coman has always been business minded, like.
- 23:18Speaker 3: Yeah, and for me, I always felt like I wasn't
- 23:23Speaker 3: worthy enough to belong, so I didn't expect it and
- 23:26Speaker 3: I didn't think that I was old any of this
- 23:28Speaker 3: or so, you know, whenever I got a check, I
- 23:30Speaker 3: always felt like I was scamming somebody to get to check,
- 23:33Speaker 3: because it was like, yeah, are you sure it's supposed
- 23:36Speaker 3: to be my check? I don't know that.
- 23:37Speaker 1: I'm just happy with whatever I would get.
- 23:39Speaker 3: I was more than happy with that, but Comean was like, nah,
- 23:42Speaker 3: no matter what we're getting, they still screwing us over.
- 23:45Speaker 3: And no matter how, no matter how much you know,
- 23:48Speaker 3: if like macaolm me saying, somebody put the knife in
- 23:52Speaker 3: your nine inches and they pull it out too, you know.
- 23:56Speaker 1: So that's command mind frame was like, nah, I don't matter.
- 23:58Speaker 3: It don't matter if they're paying us more crumbs than
- 24:02Speaker 3: the next artist. We're still getting crumbs and this is
- 24:04Speaker 3: not how it should be. And he's always had that vision,
- 24:07Speaker 3: so you know it it really honestly, it took us
- 24:10Speaker 3: going our separate ways for me to be able to,
- 24:13Speaker 3: you know, become the written Paul Wall, you know, as
- 24:17Speaker 3: much as I have been.
- 24:18Speaker 2: You know, you remember the first time you guys were
- 24:20Speaker 2: able to kind of have like the years later convo
- 24:23Speaker 2: and like.
- 24:24Speaker 1: Just oh yeah, absolutely, like man.
- 24:26Speaker 2: Yeah, you know you was right. You know, A.
- 24:30Speaker 1: Big shout out to Pemse and E forty.
- 24:33Speaker 3: Those are the only two people the period were like
- 24:37Speaker 3: from start to finish. They were like, y'all tripping, y'all tripping, y'all,
- 24:42Speaker 3: y'all not seeing a big picture, y'all not seeing a
- 24:44Speaker 3: big picture with the money that you're missing that you
- 24:47Speaker 3: could be making right now that you're not gonna be
- 24:49Speaker 3: able to make tomorrow. You can make it today, you
- 24:50Speaker 3: can't make it tomorrow, right and your mind you're thinking
- 24:52Speaker 3: you can always get back together and it's gonna pick
- 24:54Speaker 3: up where it left off. That's not how it worked, right.
- 24:57Speaker 3: Sometimes it can work like that, but it's not. It's
- 24:59Speaker 3: not guaranteed. And they also saw what we represented for
- 25:03Speaker 3: who we represented for.
- 25:04Speaker 1: You know, the city. That's also why when we had
- 25:06Speaker 1: our problems, our beefs, it never went too far because.
- 25:10Speaker 2: We got ugly. Sometimes the Houston beef in general can get.
- 25:14Speaker 3: Like yeah yeah, but with me and him both, we didn't.
- 25:17Speaker 3: You know, we grew up with each other, We know
- 25:19Speaker 3: each other's families. We didn't want to like, I'm not
- 25:21Speaker 3: putting all that whatever, he's not putting all that out there.
- 25:24Speaker 1: And we also see who we're doing this for. If
- 25:27Speaker 1: we get.
- 25:27Speaker 3: Ugly like that, it's just gonna make us all look bad.
- 25:30Speaker 3: And we just didn't want to do that, you know
- 25:32Speaker 3: what I'm saying. So that that helped, you know, us
- 25:34Speaker 3: not get too crazy out of there.
- 25:36Speaker 1: But PEMC when he.
- 25:37Speaker 3: When PEMC put us on the song, and while in
- 25:40Speaker 3: that Cooper still ain't talking, you know, and that that's
- 25:43Speaker 3: when people already were like, man, we all gonna get
- 25:45Speaker 3: back together this and that he says and it's the
- 25:49Speaker 3: number one song on the radio everybody and you're in
- 25:51Speaker 3: the club and you hearing it there, it's like, oh
- 25:53Speaker 3: my god, you know. And then of course when Pemcy passed,
- 25:56Speaker 3: that really put it in the perspective where we felt like,
- 26:00Speaker 3: this is something we owe to him, and we owe
- 26:02Speaker 3: it to ourselves, you know, because we we at the
- 26:04Speaker 3: end of the day, we we grew up, we're brothers,
- 26:06Speaker 3: we're friends, so we we owed it to ourselves as well,
- 26:08Speaker 3: but we owed it to him. And again, like I said,
- 26:11Speaker 3: forty two, E forty was from day one, was like
- 26:14Speaker 3: y'all tripping man, is that.
- 26:15Speaker 2: A phone call thing? Or are you guys in person? Both?
- 26:18Speaker 1: Yeah? Both? You know. E forty was a big bro
- 26:20Speaker 1: to us.
- 26:20Speaker 3: For a long time, from the very beginning. My bro
- 26:25Speaker 3: Sea Dog and Dallas was good friends still, you know
- 26:28Speaker 3: with E forty, so he would always you know, hey, man,
- 26:31Speaker 3: I'm gonna i'a plug you E forty many gonna get
- 26:33Speaker 3: some game and the forty being an independent pioneer that
- 26:36Speaker 3: he is, and he would just give us so much
- 26:38Speaker 3: game advice, whatever. And then you know, same with PIMC
- 26:42Speaker 3: and I. You know, there was times where you know,
- 26:43Speaker 3: I used to write PEMC when he was in jail
- 26:46Speaker 3: and h you know, but when he's out of jail
- 26:47Speaker 3: and I remember bumping into him at the airport one
- 26:50Speaker 3: time and we.
- 26:50Speaker 1: Have a crazy conversation.
- 26:52Speaker 3: Crazy, I mean crazy in terms of long, a long
- 26:54Speaker 3: conversation just about me and come in here, like, man,
- 26:57Speaker 3: it was up this bullshit even come in you know, man,
- 26:59Speaker 3: y'all tripping.
- 27:00Speaker 1: I told him the same thing. I'm telling him to
- 27:01Speaker 1: tell you the same thing I told him.
- 27:02Speaker 3: Y'all tripping. And you know, there's definitely fun conversation. But
- 27:05Speaker 3: when you in person looking you know, the person you
- 27:07Speaker 3: looked up to, admired, you know, your whole rap career
- 27:11Speaker 3: or as a child.
- 27:11Speaker 1: This is somebody I looked at to my.
- 27:13Speaker 2: Whole When when you and him have that first congo,
- 27:16Speaker 2: is it in person?
- 27:16Speaker 3: It's in person, and you know, of course this is
- 27:19Speaker 3: like nah, you don't get it. You don't know, you know,
- 27:22Speaker 3: And he was just like, man, you think me and
- 27:23Speaker 3: bunn ain't never had no problems. You think what you
- 27:25Speaker 3: know whatever, like man, you tripping? Man, you tripping paw
- 27:28Speaker 3: awhile and he telling coman or the same thing. But
- 27:31Speaker 3: it's just not you know, sometimes you gotta plan to
- 27:33Speaker 3: seed and let grow. So you gotta put the cookies.
- 27:35Speaker 1: In the oven and let it bake, you know what
- 27:37Speaker 1: I'm saying.
- 27:37Speaker 3: So we just we let the cookies bake a little
- 27:39Speaker 3: bit and then when it's when it's time, you know.
- 27:42Speaker 3: And I think that the major catalyst was Pency passing
- 27:44Speaker 3: because we definitely felt like we owed that to him
- 27:47Speaker 3: and we felt like he would be proud of us
- 27:49Speaker 3: that we buried the hatch.
- 27:50Speaker 2: It there's this legendary source cover with everybody from Houston
- 27:54Speaker 2: on it. I mean it was it was special. Yeah,
- 27:57Speaker 2: that was But could you kind of walk me through
- 27:59Speaker 2: what was that shoot?
- 28:00Speaker 1: Like?
- 28:00Speaker 2: Was there any any funk? I mean, there are some
- 28:03Speaker 2: people on that cover that did not function with you.
- 28:05Speaker 1: There definitely was.
- 28:06Speaker 2: I wasn't on the cover, man, you were? How you well,
- 28:11Speaker 2: you know, how did you not end up on that cover?
- 28:13Speaker 1: Well?
- 28:14Speaker 3: A few reasons, I'm you know, honestly, at that time,
- 28:18Speaker 3: I had something already planned going on with Double XL
- 28:22Speaker 3: same day, same time everything where they're like, hey, we're coming.
- 28:24Speaker 1: It was like the All Star the super Bowl something.
- 28:27Speaker 2: Everything was in Houston.
- 28:28Speaker 1: Yeah, someone's going on in Houston and.
- 28:30Speaker 2: They actually had to ask you to be on the cover.
- 28:32Speaker 3: Well they did, but they're like, hey, we're doing it,
- 28:34Speaker 3: you know, Tuesday at five, Well Tuesday five, I'm already
- 28:38Speaker 3: doing something with Double XL And I just felt like
- 28:41Speaker 3: I can't tell them no.
- 28:42Speaker 2: And youl by yourself, right, Man?
- 28:44Speaker 1: I was the only cover ever was on was Murder
- 28:49Speaker 1: Dog and Ozone.
- 28:50Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying.
- 28:51Speaker 3: So I don't know if maybe I should have Maybe
- 28:54Speaker 3: I should have said he double, I ain't gonna make it.
- 28:57Speaker 1: I'm gonna go.
- 28:57Speaker 2: I remember the Double XCEL article. I think you had
- 28:59Speaker 2: a red on. If I'm not tripping, I have a
- 29:02Speaker 2: bunch of vintage double sales in the studio.
- 29:07Speaker 1: I mean that's what Atlantic Records was definitely pissed at me.
- 29:10Speaker 1: They were like, man, you're gonna be on the cover.
- 29:11Speaker 3: But I also you know, I mean honestly, I felt
- 29:15Speaker 3: a little disrespected. If it was any other region, if
- 29:18Speaker 3: it was New York, would you say, hey, we're gonna
- 29:21Speaker 3: do a New York cover. We're gonna do a New
- 29:22Speaker 3: York cover with everybody. No, they're gonna give each one
- 29:25Speaker 3: of those artists their own cover. I mean, you look
- 29:28Speaker 3: at all of us, the only time any of us
- 29:30Speaker 3: were on the cover other than like Squarat Face in
- 29:33Speaker 3: the group Come In There was definitely worthy of being
- 29:36Speaker 3: on his own stone cover. Slim Tub was worthy of
- 29:38Speaker 3: his own cover, same as Mike Jones, as Little Flip,
- 29:42Speaker 3: as Zero, anybody else that was on the cover. And
- 29:45Speaker 3: I just felt like, man, this is their way to
- 29:47Speaker 3: do us all at once, right, And it's like and
- 29:49Speaker 3: I also felt like, you know, I mean, we got
- 29:52Speaker 3: problems with each other, and the way it was told
- 29:54Speaker 3: to me was, man, I know there's some people that
- 29:57Speaker 3: we don't get along, but we're just gonna go We're
- 29:59Speaker 3: gonna just go.
- 30:00Speaker 1: Do the We're gonna do the picture and leave. We
- 30:02Speaker 1: ain't gotta speak to each other and leave it. And
- 30:03Speaker 1: I'm like, well, nah, I got an issue.
- 30:05Speaker 3: I want to I want to talk this out, you know,
- 30:07Speaker 3: like and then sometimes it'll be like, well, you know,
- 30:10Speaker 3: Jake Prince got the boxing ring, and I'm like, well,
- 30:12Speaker 3: well what if I mean, look, I definitely could box,
- 30:14Speaker 3: but what if I came box, well and I just
- 30:16Speaker 3: got to get bullied.
- 30:17Speaker 1: But I could get my ass whoop and.
- 30:19Speaker 3: I could get messed up, you know, Like, so you know,
- 30:21Speaker 3: I just I just felt like that for me, that
- 30:23Speaker 3: wasn't for me. And you know, I'm very happy and
- 30:26Speaker 3: proud that they did because Slim Thug and Zero at
- 30:29Speaker 3: the time they had huge issues.
- 30:32Speaker 1: They both had.
- 30:33Speaker 2: Said some I think helped squash that too.
- 30:36Speaker 3: He did squashed a lot of the big squash did
- 30:40Speaker 3: the Big squashy. But but at that at that you know,
- 30:44Speaker 3: I wasn't there, but as it was told to me,
- 30:45Speaker 3: was at that photo shoot. Zero and Slim they talked
- 30:49Speaker 3: it out and they buried their hatchet, you know, as
- 30:50Speaker 3: well as some other people that were there.
- 30:52Speaker 1: They buried their hatchet. You know. So a lot of
- 30:54Speaker 1: positivity came from that photo shoot.
- 30:56Speaker 3: But you know, and I do think back because it
- 30:59Speaker 3: was so iconic as like, damn, man, what would have been?
- 31:01Speaker 3: And you know, they told me how you know, people
- 31:03Speaker 3: that were there were like, okay, you know, I'm standing here,
- 31:06Speaker 3: they're standing there.
- 31:07Speaker 1: Then you see the cover they put them next to
- 31:08Speaker 1: each other. Anybody, this is beefing. They got them right.
- 31:10Speaker 3: Next to each other, and it's like, man, I don't know, man,
- 31:13Speaker 3: they like kind of photoshopped it together.
- 31:15Speaker 1: But you it is what it is, man.
- 31:17Speaker 3: And even though I didn't, you know, I didn't get
- 31:20Speaker 3: on the double xl Okay, it wasn't for that, it was.
- 31:22Speaker 1: I'm already doing something. Yeah, it's all good man.
- 31:28Speaker 2: Shout out to Raffi Law Group our family. Yes, it's
- 31:31Speaker 2: been so dope to partner with, you know, such a
- 31:33Speaker 2: name and brand and somebody who I actually am a
- 31:36Speaker 2: customer of. Shout out to Raffi Law Group, man Arizona's
- 31:40Speaker 2: premier personal injury law firm. And I don't just put
- 31:43Speaker 2: my name on anybody when we do this stuff on
- 31:46Speaker 2: the Bootleg cap podcast and you see it's partnering with brands.
- 31:49Speaker 2: We're very selective about who we connect with. And Raffi
- 31:52Speaker 2: is someone who's actually helped my family, helped my wife
- 31:55Speaker 2: get a settlement, all right, has helped over seventy thousand
- 31:59Speaker 2: people in Arizona. No matter what happens, Man, car accident, crash, injury,
- 32:05Speaker 2: you maybe get bit by a dog, I don't know,
- 32:07Speaker 2: whatever it is, Raffi Law Group makes the process less stressful.
- 32:11Speaker 2: They put money in your pocket. Yes, the name you
- 32:14Speaker 2: can trust, you already know, man, Raffi Law Group. Save
- 32:17Speaker 2: the number just in case, because hey, you get into
- 32:20Speaker 2: a car accident tomorrow, you gotta call Raffi six two
- 32:23Speaker 2: three three eight eight four three three three and want
- 32:26Speaker 2: to wish a big happy birthday to Raffi's just celebrated
- 32:29Speaker 2: his fortieth birthday. We had a good time in Vegas.
- 32:32Speaker 2: Fifty cent was there, pauly D was there, mad Rich
- 32:35Speaker 2: was there. E c Rock was there. It was a movie,
- 32:38Speaker 2: all right, Secretary of State was there. We were just
- 32:40Speaker 2: hanging out, Man show. Look shout out to Brandon Raffi.
- 32:43Speaker 2: Don't forget Raffi Law Group. The only calling you to
- 32:45Speaker 2: make if you're an AZ and you get into an
- 32:47Speaker 2: accident or you get into any sort of injury situation,
- 32:51Speaker 2: they'll take care you immediately call Raffi. Baby. Let's get
- 32:54Speaker 2: back to the podcast. It's been twenty years, twenty one
- 32:57Speaker 2: years since people shit, wow, twenty one years. Crazy crazy.
- 33:03Speaker 2: How often do you I mean, obviously you have to
- 33:05Speaker 2: perform some of the albums. Yeah, would you ever just
- 33:07Speaker 2: revisit and just throw it on it? Just not the
- 33:09Speaker 2: time machine.
- 33:10Speaker 1: I actually don't.
- 33:11Speaker 3: I really don't listen to any of my music because
- 33:13Speaker 3: I'm always working on new music.
- 33:15Speaker 1: I only listen.
- 33:16Speaker 3: You are very very active, yes, yes, on the indies,
- 33:19Speaker 3: multiple albums a year, absolutely.
- 33:21Speaker 1: A lot of them are under the radar.
- 33:25Speaker 3: With Static Yeah, yes, man, big shoutout real Static, Yes,
- 33:29Speaker 3: big shoutout bum Bee, all the stuff I got with Terminology,
- 33:32Speaker 3: the stuff I got with Baby Bash, stuff I got
- 33:34Speaker 3: with Little Kiki, all my solo albums, the stuff I
- 33:37Speaker 3: got with.
- 33:37Speaker 1: New artists like The Delivery Boy or whoever. Like Man,
- 33:40Speaker 1: it's definitely a lot.
- 33:41Speaker 3: But the only time I listened to my own music
- 33:43Speaker 3: is one about to shoot the video and then I
- 33:45Speaker 3: remember you just to learn my lyrics.
- 33:47Speaker 1: But we People's champ though. It's crazy because there's so
- 33:50Speaker 1: many songs from.
- 33:51Speaker 3: That album that I perform, Like if I got twenty songs,
- 33:55Speaker 3: I performed five of them People's So you know, it
- 33:58Speaker 3: definitely is those are the that's when I listen to
- 34:00Speaker 3: the people tent when I'm performing.
- 34:02Speaker 2: What is because a lot of people who are in
- 34:04Speaker 2: your position might just depend on show money, It might
- 34:09Speaker 2: not be too active when it comes to putting out
- 34:11Speaker 2: these joint albums and running up the end of catalog
- 34:14Speaker 2: or tapping in with the younger artists. What would you
- 34:17Speaker 2: kind of say is your main motivation that keeps you
- 34:20Speaker 2: hungry to still be in the studio?
- 34:23Speaker 1: Man, Man, just my love, my passion for it, you
- 34:26Speaker 1: know that.
- 34:26Speaker 3: And definitely, you know, dealing with the bs of industry politics,
- 34:30Speaker 3: or when you think you're supposed to get paid and
- 34:33Speaker 3: then you don't and you don't know who's supposed to
- 34:35Speaker 3: pay you, but regardless, you don't get to check right
- 34:38Speaker 3: And you know, you.
- 34:39Speaker 1: Put your trust in faith in people that will break
- 34:41Speaker 1: your heart.
- 34:42Speaker 3: The game will just completely break your heart, you know.
- 34:45Speaker 1: So I've definitely lost my love a few times.
- 34:48Speaker 3: But you know, I think back to my perspective, this
- 34:50Speaker 3: is still my childhood dream that I pray for every
- 34:53Speaker 3: day of my life today included you know, to be
- 34:56Speaker 3: able to do this and to you work so hard
- 34:58Speaker 3: to get in a position to do what you want
- 35:00Speaker 3: to do how you want to do it, to just
- 35:02Speaker 3: say no, I ain't doing it no more because I
- 35:03Speaker 3: don't feel like it.
- 35:04Speaker 1: It's just a waste to me. And I feel like
- 35:07Speaker 1: I got a lot of bars. Well I got more
- 35:08Speaker 1: bars in.
- 35:09Speaker 3: The criminal justice system, and I just man, you know, Definitely,
- 35:13Speaker 3: my main source of income for a long time was
- 35:16Speaker 3: selling grills. Yeah, and outside of you know, if I
- 35:19Speaker 3: was doing it only for the money, definitely I would
- 35:21Speaker 3: never make music again. It would only be grills because
- 35:23Speaker 3: that's there's a lot of money with that, but that
- 35:26Speaker 3: you know, having that secondary source of income, you know,
- 35:30Speaker 3: allow me to make the kind of music I want
- 35:32Speaker 3: to make, not just me chasing trends or everybody sounded
- 35:36Speaker 3: like this, So I got to sound like this.
- 35:38Speaker 1: Everybody sounded like that. I gotta sound like that.
- 35:39Speaker 3: I can make the kind of music I want to
- 35:41Speaker 3: make and for the people I want to make it for.
- 35:43Speaker 3: And I'll hear people that'll be like, man, y'all need
- 35:46Speaker 3: to bring.
- 35:46Speaker 1: Back this sound. Y'all need to do this. No more.
- 35:48Speaker 1: Ain't nobody doing this. No, y'all need to do that.
- 35:49Speaker 1: And I really take it to heart, and it'll make
- 35:51Speaker 1: me encourage me to all right, I want to make
- 35:53Speaker 1: music like that. That's the same music I like to
- 35:55Speaker 1: listen to.
- 35:56Speaker 2: You have so many, like I guess, like versions of
- 35:59Speaker 2: your career, Like I think back to when there's a
- 36:01Speaker 2: lot of errors. Listen when you get into the pocket
- 36:03Speaker 2: with Travis Skinhead, Robb you do expensive taste, man, like
- 36:08Speaker 2: that was a whole thing.
- 36:10Speaker 1: Bro.
- 36:10Speaker 3: I'll look back at this as as like my hair
- 36:14Speaker 3: and my beard changes. It's almost like ushering in a
- 36:18Speaker 3: new era of the powwall sound, and I'll look back
- 36:20Speaker 3: at all the different errors.
- 36:22Speaker 1: When I had the tape of fade, the little patch.
- 36:25Speaker 3: Patch, when I was fade, when I you know, started
- 36:29Speaker 3: dying my beard, I was getting a little older. When
- 36:32Speaker 3: I had the food beard, when I had the longs
- 36:34Speaker 3: easy top, when I grew my hair out, when I
- 36:37Speaker 3: left my grades show all of that. There's a lot
- 36:39Speaker 3: of different eras when I was the big power, when
- 36:42Speaker 3: I was the skinny pow wow.
- 36:43Speaker 1: You know some of that it makes.
- 36:45Speaker 3: Me think, you know about Luther Van Draws when they
- 36:47Speaker 3: be like, oh, when they used to argue.
- 36:49Speaker 1: You know, I like the fat Luthor. I like the
- 36:51Speaker 1: skinny Luthor. And it made me like, you know.
- 36:54Speaker 3: Coincide, you know my different errors, and you know, as
- 36:57Speaker 3: an artist, I get to grow.
- 36:59Speaker 1: But any era that ever was a power whow, I'm
- 37:02Speaker 1: still powerwaw.
- 37:02Speaker 3: And you're still gonna hear me if I'm rapping with
- 37:04Speaker 3: Travis Barker or if I'm rapping with Status selector or
- 37:07Speaker 3: if I'm with Jill Scott.
- 37:09Speaker 1: It's gonna always be pa while you here.
- 37:12Speaker 2: And then you catch a platinum song like Johnny Dang
- 37:15Speaker 2: that just opens you up to a bunch of new fans.
- 37:17Speaker 3: That grows absolutely, man. You know, and I think back
- 37:23Speaker 3: to we do a lot of shows. So even before
- 37:25Speaker 3: we did Johnny Dang with that Mexicano team with Drodi Man,
- 37:28Speaker 3: even before that, we were doing a lot of shows.
- 37:30Speaker 3: But you know, when you look in the crowd, it
- 37:32Speaker 3: looks a certain way, a little bit older, you know,
- 37:36Speaker 3: a certain you know, there's certain people in the crowd.
- 37:38Speaker 3: And after that song, now all of a sudden, the
- 37:41Speaker 3: crowd is extremely diverse.
- 37:44Speaker 1: It's younger.
- 37:46Speaker 3: Yes, you can see the you can see the effect
- 37:49Speaker 3: of that, which was crazy. It was a man and
- 37:52Speaker 3: ushered in a new fan base. To me, first of all,
- 37:55Speaker 3: it made me kind of more established. Oh he ain't
- 37:59Speaker 3: has been he he ain't fall off. Well, he still
- 38:01Speaker 3: got something in the tank. But at the same time,
- 38:03Speaker 3: it allowed me to be introduced to a much younger
- 38:07Speaker 3: fan base, you know, man, big salute to that Mexicano
- 38:10Speaker 3: te man for sure.
- 38:11Speaker 2: Okay, last two questions. Your favorite Houston album of all
- 38:16Speaker 2: time that isn't your own.
- 38:17Speaker 3: My favorite album of all time in Houston is Easy
- 38:20Speaker 3: Dea Screwed for Life, Dea Screwed, Yeah, man, And of
- 38:25Speaker 3: course my second is Little Kicky, don't mess with Texas,
- 38:27Speaker 3: but screw for lif Dea.
- 38:29Speaker 1: Oh man, I could listen to that front to back.
- 38:32Speaker 3: I actually, as a DJ, I chopped and screwed it
- 38:34Speaker 3: for Big Hawk before he passed away. Big Hawk, I
- 38:37Speaker 3: don't know exactly what he had to do with releasing
- 38:40Speaker 3: the album, but he had something to do with.
- 38:42Speaker 1: Releasing the album. And I remember asking him at the
- 38:44Speaker 1: studio one time, man, how come you ain't got no
- 38:47Speaker 1: chopping screwed version of that?
- 38:48Speaker 3: And he was like, well, because if DJ screw ain't
- 38:50Speaker 3: gonna do it, he ain't putting it out. And I
- 38:52Speaker 3: was like, hey, I already got a version that I
- 38:55Speaker 3: made for my own listening pleasure. If you want to
- 38:57Speaker 3: put it out, you can, and he released it. A man,
- 39:00Speaker 3: that was amazing to you know, to do that. I
- 39:03Speaker 3: love that album.
- 39:03Speaker 2: And then I want you to put together your mount
- 39:07Speaker 2: rushmore of let's say, oh four to seven of Houston rap.
- 39:13Speaker 2: That your era, your peak era, my era.
- 39:16Speaker 3: I mean, of course I wouldn't put myself. Exclude yourself, Yeah,
- 39:18Speaker 3: exclude myself all this. I mean, it's it's kind of easy.
- 39:21Speaker 1: It is pretty easy.
- 39:22Speaker 3: I slim thug, you know, come in there, Mike Jones
- 39:25Speaker 3: and then you know, Flip.
- 39:27Speaker 1: I would maybe put a zero.
- 39:28Speaker 2: Even though heroes around.
- 39:30Speaker 3: And you know, if you if you go back a
- 39:32Speaker 3: little further like a ninety eight ninety nine and then
- 39:35Speaker 3: not for sure it would include Flip, but you know if.
- 39:37Speaker 2: Zero going of those, Yeah, most city down is like
- 39:42Speaker 2: for people who have never partied in Houston. Yeah, it's
- 39:45Speaker 2: like coming to l A and here and YG's DPT
- 39:47Speaker 2: or like it's like 'all dreams and nightmare.
- 39:50Speaker 1: Yeah, yes, yes, it's like and nightmares. Now.
- 39:52Speaker 3: My my Mount Rushmore all time would be the Jacker
- 39:57Speaker 3: from the Bay Area would be Rich. The Factor would
- 40:01Speaker 3: be a little kicky, and Sean Price.
- 40:05Speaker 2: Hey man, I did not expect Sean Key.
- 40:08Speaker 1: And if there's a fifth, I put Hustler from the
- 40:10Speaker 1: Mob figures as well.
- 40:11Speaker 3: But big Guy, oh yeah, yeah, I love the baby
- 40:14Speaker 3: music man the Bait.
- 40:15Speaker 1: The Bay to me is like our twin city from Houston.
- 40:18Speaker 2: Very similar.
- 40:19Speaker 1: Yes we now we we do.
- 40:21Speaker 3: We're very different, but we're similar but big on a
- 40:24Speaker 3: car culture. We're big on our car culture where if
- 40:27Speaker 3: you don't like it, we don't care. We ain't doing
- 40:29Speaker 3: it for you, We're doing it for us. Big on
- 40:31Speaker 3: our local slang. We talk away, we talk and it's
- 40:34Speaker 3: not for you, it's for us.
- 40:36Speaker 1: You know.
- 40:36Speaker 3: We're big on our independent hustle. We're big on supporting
- 40:40Speaker 3: our own.
- 40:41Speaker 1: I love the baby man, definitely love the bait.
- 40:43Speaker 2: Well, listen, Paul, I appreciate you sitting down. You got
- 40:46Speaker 2: any new music on the wear.
- 40:47Speaker 3: Yes, just drop the album. It's called Fortune and Glorious
- 40:50Speaker 3: eighteen songs. I actually got a video for every.
- 40:53Speaker 1: Song on the album. Every song on the album has
- 40:55Speaker 1: a video.
- 40:56Speaker 3: And you know, stead of working on new music, to
- 40:58Speaker 3: me in terminology, have a new album, getting you come
- 41:00Speaker 3: out for the show, big big shout out, you know,
- 41:03Speaker 3: and definitely you know I'm playing on dropping until I'm eighty.
- 41:06Speaker 2: Man, God, how many albums you think?
- 41:08Speaker 3: It's like twenty over twenty maybe, you know. I mean,
- 41:11Speaker 3: it depends on what you consider an album. Some of
- 41:14Speaker 3: the albums like it's a mixtape or it's an EP.
- 41:16Speaker 1: Or definitely include the group albums.
- 41:19Speaker 3: I'm definitely over twenty five, you know. But you know,
- 41:21Speaker 3: it's it's a blessing to be able to do what
- 41:23Speaker 3: I love to do.
- 41:24Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying, Paul, my brother, appreciate your man, Yes, sir,
- 41:27Speaker 2: what p y'all were here at Ease you already know.
