- 1:10[SPEAKER_04]: Yes.
- 1:10[SPEAKER_04]: Yes.
- 1:11[SPEAKER_01]: We are still joined in studio by Garth Lisbon, the SEC associate commissioner a good question so far from the breakers for six four five six eight five.
- 1:21[SPEAKER_01]: We talked during the break a little bit about how the schedule going forward.
- 1:25[SPEAKER_01]: If the playoff is to expand a 16 24 teams,
- 1:29[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, you don't want this season going to late January or early February.
- 1:33[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, how earlier can you go in the month of August to actually play games to make this work?
- 1:39[SPEAKER_01]: So you're not playing games until late January, early February.
- 1:42[SPEAKER_01]: What's feasible?
- 1:44[SPEAKER_03]: Got to ask Coach Bush, you know, how would you like playing multiple games and Baton Rouge and August?
- 1:51[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, it would be rough.
- 1:53[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, it is, I mean, almost like unhealthy.
- 1:56[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, it's a health risk.
- 1:58[SPEAKER_04]: It really is.
- 1:59[SPEAKER_04]: The level of humidity and heat is, it's so, I mean, we would always, always practice outside.
- 2:06[SPEAKER_04]: We actually did our pre-practice in our stretch indoors.
- 2:10[SPEAKER_04]: because of just the amount of time that you could be outside in that and you would be squishy as a coach leaving the field and so you wore your shoes where that that's how much you lost as far as as far as a body weight.
- 2:25[SPEAKER_04]: But it would be really tough to do so I don't how much you could move it.
- 2:28[SPEAKER_04]: I really don't you can if we're going to do on when it's 110 120 on the turf.
- 2:32[SPEAKER_00]: So what what gets discussed?
- 2:34[SPEAKER_00]: I mean what at your level
- 2:40[SPEAKER_03]: the calendar provides some natural constraints and because there is so much tradition in college athletics you have to think about it what is realistic and two in terms of moving certain key dates.
- 2:53[SPEAKER_03]: Right.
- 2:54[SPEAKER_03]: So
- 2:55[SPEAKER_03]: playing on Thanksgiving weekend and the brask is case black Friday.
- 2:59[SPEAKER_03]: Right.
- 3:00[SPEAKER_03]: That means a lot time on it.
- 3:02[SPEAKER_03]: So I would ask a question of you and your listeners, how would you feel about giving up that date because it's going to instead be a new playoff date.
- 3:13[SPEAKER_03]: Playoff date.
- 3:14[SPEAKER_03]: So not this season can end sooner.
- 3:16[SPEAKER_03]: I think we all we understand that.
- 3:17[SPEAKER_03]: That's a nonstarter.
- 3:19[SPEAKER_03]: That's a nonstarter.
- 3:20[SPEAKER_03]: So that
- 3:22[SPEAKER_03]: also relates to the size of the field, because the larger the field, the just by definition, the longer it takes to whittle it down, you're not gonna play a game more than once a week.
- 3:33[SPEAKER_03]: What role, if any, does, you know, do conference championship games play in the future of college football, you have the constraint on the front end with respect to the heat and,
- 3:44[SPEAKER_03]: how much of August is really realistic to play couch football game.
- 3:48[SPEAKER_03]: So there's some real calendar lead constraints.
- 3:52[SPEAKER_03]: And that's why we're landing in a place now where the college football national champion, this year will be crowned on January 25th.
- 4:02[SPEAKER_03]: And there was a beauty to crowning a national champion on January 1st or if January 2nd was a weekend, you know, that makes, yes, sense to there was a beauty to that and there was
- 4:16[SPEAKER_03]: just natural kind of rhythm of the calendar and allowed fans to really make college football that the center of the sporting universe.
- 4:27[SPEAKER_03]: And I do think that college football loses some of that, the longer it goes into January.
- 4:32[SPEAKER_00]: Hold on, now, do you, I don't gasp at January 20th?
- 4:35[SPEAKER_04]: Like, oh, that's too, I'm all the same way.
- 4:39[SPEAKER_04]: It does not bother me.
- 4:40[SPEAKER_04]: Gasp, I don't think they can do that.
- 4:46[SPEAKER_03]: If, if January, all, would you agree that, I mean, January 1st was a perfect time.
- 4:52[SPEAKER_03]: That was a, Yeah, was brown a national champion.
- 4:54[SPEAKER_04]: Or just have people vote for a national champion.
- 4:57[SPEAKER_04]: We mean, so, we're still okay with that one.
- 4:59[SPEAKER_04]: We know, and no time to vote.
- 5:01[SPEAKER_04]: This vote, whoever we think is best.
- 5:03[SPEAKER_03]: All I'm suggesting is the further you get into January, it just gets harder to keep fans attention.
- 5:10[SPEAKER_03]: And then also, as we were talking off air, college football is a game that's played on Saturdays, up until you get to the playoffs.
- 5:19[SPEAKER_03]: And by virtue of the NFL calendar, the games that play off games that are occurring in January are not happening on Saturdays.
- 5:27[SPEAKER_03]: So they're happening in these non-traditional windows
- 5:33[SPEAKER_00]: Now, Bill is uncomfortable with that notion.
- 5:35[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm playing the championships on Monday and college football and college basketball.
- 5:41[SPEAKER_00]: That's just a fun, that's just simply NFL, right?
- 5:45[SPEAKER_03]: Basketball is a different set of considerations.
- 5:47[SPEAKER_03]: So basketball, the final four Saturday is the biggest day of the sport.
- 5:55[SPEAKER_03]: And so that you have
- 5:58[SPEAKER_03]: two games that day that occupy kind of huge day, yeah, and it's on the Saturday and scape and it's on a Saturday and so you're almost willing to to kind of pay the price of a Monday night championship game in order to have that Saturday mega Saturday.
- 6:16[SPEAKER_03]: So basketball, I think it makes sense, okay?
- 6:19[SPEAKER_03]: And the instability tournament leading up to that is exclusively a weekend endeavor.
- 6:24[SPEAKER_03]: You've got Thursday, Friday,
- 6:27[SPEAKER_03]: So I think the basketball calendar makes some sense.
- 6:31[SPEAKER_03]: Football is largely a product of trying to avoid direct competition with the NFL.
- 6:37[SPEAKER_00]: It's nothing real.
- 6:39[SPEAKER_00]: There's no real other explanation.
- 6:41[SPEAKER_04]: It's just odd that Super Bowl Sunday, because they play on Sundays, and college football has been known to own Saturdays, but you have to get bumped to a Monday.
- 6:51[SPEAKER_00]: Because of the NFL.
- 6:52[SPEAKER_04]: I know I know why, but I just I don't like it.
- 6:54[SPEAKER_04]: And I can say people watching that game.
- 6:57[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, it's like the games all return it off in you and you go.
- 7:00[SPEAKER_03]: I stayed up.
- 7:01[SPEAKER_04]: No, I stayed up until like three in the morning because it was Indiana.
- 7:04[SPEAKER_04]: And so watch it six.
- 7:05[SPEAKER_04]: I want to hear all the interviews, but that with another question.
- 7:09[SPEAKER_04]: What do you guys talk about?
- 7:11[SPEAKER_04]: ball games.
- 7:13[SPEAKER_04]: What is talked about in the SEC?
- 7:15[SPEAKER_04]: Okay, guys, got some guys that didn't make did not make it.
- 7:18[SPEAKER_04]: And then now, if you get a quote, just like a say, it's an Alabama George whoever doesn't make the playoffs.
- 7:24[SPEAKER_04]: And all of a sudden, they, any of these teams, and then they go to a ball game.
- 7:27[SPEAKER_04]: There's no one playing.
- 7:28[SPEAKER_04]: All of a sudden they're getting this logo, but it's not the team that all of a sudden they're going to the Alamo Bowl and it's like they're playing whoever and there's like no interest in it.
- 7:37[SPEAKER_04]: What is discussed amongst the Big 10, Big 12, SEC, ACC?
- 7:43[SPEAKER_04]: How do we preserve some of these other games?
- 7:46[SPEAKER_00]: full game.
- 7:46[SPEAKER_03]: We talked about unintended consequences of playoff format, scheduling, and so forth.
- 7:53[SPEAKER_03]: So the reality is the larger you expand the playoff field, the less significance of full games.
- 8:02[SPEAKER_03]: Because by definition, you're moving the cutoff line down.
- 8:07[SPEAKER_03]: So you think of the BCS.
- 8:11[SPEAKER_03]: That's, you know, obviously we're going away as back there.
- 8:13[SPEAKER_03]: But
- 8:14[SPEAKER_03]: If you don't make that game, but you're the third or fourth best team, and you get a chance to go play a bull game against another top 5 team, like that's still a great game.
- 8:22[SPEAKER_04]: So it was a deal, it was absolutely a deal.
- 8:25[SPEAKER_03]: Fans are going to watch that game, okay?
- 8:27[SPEAKER_03]: You shift the cup, cut off line to four.
- 8:31[SPEAKER_03]: So now you've got the best team, not in the playoff looking, you know, for competition the bull game, it's the fifth best team, but maybe they can play the sixth or seventh best team.
- 8:39[SPEAKER_03]: That's still a compelling game.
- 8:41[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, the bulls were more than the other.
- 8:42[SPEAKER_03]: But the further,
- 8:43[SPEAKER_03]: down the line you go, the less compelling the bold games become.
- 8:49[SPEAKER_03]: And
- 8:51[SPEAKER_03]: leads to opt-outs, either because players are preparing for the draft or maybe, increasingly, you know, the transfer portal, just preserving their value for another season of college competition, which is unhealthy, which is not healthy for the sport, but it's the reality of where we are, the players making self-interest at economic decisions.
- 9:15[SPEAKER_03]: So, I don't know,
- 9:19[SPEAKER_03]: If I would be long-term bullish on bowl games, just based on what we see happening in college football, but if I was a bowl executive, I would want the playoff to stay as small as I would.
- 9:32[SPEAKER_00]: So it's almost like another reason, too.
- 9:36[SPEAKER_00]: Why you wouldn't want an expanded playoff particularly to 24 if you if you're inclined to the bulls at all if you if you value that tradition of college football You probably you probably should think twice about a 24 team playoff, right?
- 9:50[SPEAKER_03]: It's just one of the reasons why I off would certainly come a larger playoff would come at the expense of bull games and Probably even more importantly for the average college football fan.
- 9:59[SPEAKER_03]: It would come at the expense of
- 10:01[SPEAKER_04]: the significance of the regular season and some of which I would be so crushed and not have two six and six teams playing into Detroit.
- 10:08[SPEAKER_04]: Western Michigan and Wyoming, I'm serious, or you know, I'm serious, you know, I want you to be gay too.
- 10:14[SPEAKER_04]: I love I'm with you on if those games disappeared, but also that's a Wednesday, December 23rd or 27th.
- 10:23[SPEAKER_04]: And there's no ball games to turn the TV on to watch because just play off games watching cornhole.
- 10:27[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I'm like what are we what are we doing that I loved watching San Diego state play whoever that was cool Don't take that away If you if that goes away and there's no bowl games at all, please tell Sandy this No, these those games please commissioner Sanky don't still generate considerable TV viewers They do because they have they're played around the holidays when people are
- 10:48[SPEAKER_03]: with family off work.
- 10:50[SPEAKER_03]: So I want to see some football.
- 10:52[SPEAKER_03]: That that's still both well for their future.
- 10:54[SPEAKER_03]: But you know, as it relates to the quality of teams in those games, obviously by definition, the larger the playoff, the less.
- 11:02[SPEAKER_03]: track of the pool of remaining teams to go play and bull games.
- 11:04[SPEAKER_03]: Hmm.
- 11:05[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 11:05[SPEAKER_04]: I just why more attracted by those games because the games where you see Florida State doesn't make it and then they get they get beat 62 to three in the bull game, you know, three, four years ago when they didn't make the final four and they just everyone ops out Florida did the same thing.
- 11:21[SPEAKER_04]: They got just absolutely crushed when they didn't make it and then the last nasty championship game.
- 11:26[SPEAKER_04]: Those games are the horrible ones and those are good games.
- 11:28[SPEAKER_04]: Those are like orange bull games.
- 11:30[SPEAKER_00]: I would just like to hear the op, the opposing viewpoint on that, that discussion.
- 11:36[SPEAKER_00]: Someone who is in favor of a 2014 playoff, what would they, I just wonder what they would say to that, that you're cutting into the bull game, that do they just not, that's not a factor in their mind, is I would, I just be interested to hear what they do.
- 11:48[SPEAKER_00]: You're, you're out there part of the big
- 11:59[SPEAKER_03]: and the notion that more than 12 teams can legitimately compete for an national championship.
- 12:08[SPEAKER_00]: And so the bulls just just take a big back seat in that conversation.
- 12:12[SPEAKER_00]: That's it.
- 12:13[SPEAKER_00]: There's no other way around.
- 12:14[SPEAKER_04]: Just imagine being in Nebraska and you don't make the 24 team in your seasons over.
- 12:18[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 12:18[SPEAKER_04]: Just imagine not.
- 12:19[SPEAKER_00]: Or you're playing in a, a, a, a, a, a, a severely diminished bull with a lot of optouts.
- 12:26[SPEAKER_00]: you know, that's what you're looking at.
- 12:28[SPEAKER_00]: Probably.
- 12:29[SPEAKER_03]: Bull games still have value.
- 12:31[SPEAKER_03]: They certainly have value to the TV networks.
- 12:33[SPEAKER_03]: They have value to fans like you right now coach Bush who like like to watch football around the holidays.
- 12:39[SPEAKER_03]: They have value to the the communities.
- 12:41[SPEAKER_03]: There's certainly some more than others, but they generate.
- 12:45[SPEAKER_03]: You know, economic activity in their area, and historically, you know, was seen as a reward for the student athletes, and I remember when I was a walk on 2004 chance to go to a bowl game, well, we didn't make a bowl game that year, but it was, you know, as a young person, you get to take a trip, you get to go somewhere that you wouldn't 100% otherwise go.
- 13:09[SPEAKER_03]: that part of the bowl game experience is probably not as compelling of an argument anymore because so many of these athletes are highly compensated, right?
- 13:18[SPEAKER_03]: And so if they want to go take a trip on their own, they can.
- 13:20[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 13:21[SPEAKER_03]: So that's another example of this.
- 13:27[SPEAKER_04]: I was a student athlete.
- 13:28[SPEAKER_04]: Hey, you get to go to, I was excited to go to Streetport, Louisiana.
- 13:31[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I was too.
- 13:33[SPEAKER_04]: All those, they are awesome.
- 13:34[SPEAKER_04]: Now, Garth, you're the smartest guy in the room.
- 13:36[SPEAKER_04]: We all know that.
- 13:37[SPEAKER_04]: Help us with something easy.
- 13:39[SPEAKER_04]: We, he is.
- 13:40[SPEAKER_04]: I don't agree to that.
- 13:41[SPEAKER_04]: There's something going on here.
- 13:42[SPEAKER_04]: Garth, I think you can weigh in on.
- 13:44[SPEAKER_04]: Steve Sipple's considering getting back together with his ex-wife.
- 13:49[SPEAKER_04]: Oh, I see.
- 13:50[SPEAKER_04]: And what would you, what kind of advice would you give him on this?
- 13:53[SPEAKER_04]: There's a, there's a, if you listen, this is all in good fun.
- 13:57[SPEAKER_04]: They're thinking about getting back together.
- 13:59[SPEAKER_04]: And what would you take beyond that?
- 14:01[SPEAKER_04]: Ballsy, Ballsy.
- 14:02[SPEAKER_04]: That Jason Peter said, Ballsy.
- 14:05[SPEAKER_04]: And when I went from, from a lawyer standpoint, what would you look at?
- 14:08[SPEAKER_04]: Let's see how the lawyer handles this one.
- 14:10[SPEAKER_04]: Yes.
- 14:11[SPEAKER_03]: My wife and I are going to celebrate our 10th anniversary.
- 14:14[SPEAKER_03]: Not you guys.
- 14:15[SPEAKER_04]: Congratulations.
- 14:16[SPEAKER_04]: Yes.
- 14:17[SPEAKER_03]: And we just try to keep life simple.
- 14:21[SPEAKER_03]: So whatever that means for you.
- 14:23[SPEAKER_03]: They'll keep it simple.
- 14:24[SPEAKER_03]: Just keep it simple.
- 14:25[SPEAKER_04]: If you guys do get that together.
- 14:27[SPEAKER_04]: But if you do, you guys keep life simple.
- 14:30[SPEAKER_04]: They're, thank you.
- 14:31[SPEAKER_04]: All right.
- 14:32[SPEAKER_00]: Well, no, I've had a lot of trouble with that.
- 14:35[SPEAKER_00]: keeping lines simple at any rate.
- 14:38[SPEAKER_00]: This was amazing.
- 14:39[SPEAKER_02]: Yes.
- 14:39[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know what to even say about this.
- 14:41[SPEAKER_03]: But you have information with two kind.
- 14:44[SPEAKER_03]: No, we're not.
- 14:45[SPEAKER_03]: I want to again thank you for taking the show on the road to Penderner Brass.
- 14:49[SPEAKER_03]: Absolutely.
- 14:50[SPEAKER_03]: And I also want to, I've known both of you for over 20 years, Jake haven't known you for a little years, but buddy, you've gotten to know you by following the show.
- 15:00[SPEAKER_03]: And I want to congratulate all of you on the incredible success that is your radio show.
- 15:05[SPEAKER_03]: It's clear you guys have found a certain magic together.
- 15:08[SPEAKER_03]: Wow.
- 15:09[SPEAKER_03]: Nebraska fans have, you know, the name Steven
- 15:19[SPEAKER_03]: That you really can still have some real magic and it's clear that you have an enormous following.
- 15:27[SPEAKER_03]: And so thank you for the opportunity to be on with you today.
- 15:29[SPEAKER_03]: God, it was great.
- 15:30[SPEAKER_03]: It's so much.
- 15:31[SPEAKER_00]: So a lot of knowledge.
- 15:32[SPEAKER_00]: I had to, you know, miss the truth, Greg, text, and here's what this text said, no need to respond.
- 15:37[SPEAKER_00]: Wow.
- 15:38[SPEAKER_00]: Just wow.
- 15:39[SPEAKER_04]: So if we showed up at the down at the in Birmingham, could we get in the office?
- 15:46[SPEAKER_04]: So there a chance could you show the free of us?
- 15:49[SPEAKER_04]: I was good.
- 15:49[SPEAKER_03]: Well, first of all, I would be honored to give you a tour.
- 15:52[SPEAKER_03]: That'd be sweet.
- 15:54[SPEAKER_03]: That'd be great.
- 15:55[SPEAKER_03]: I'd be bragging you up coach Bush because I know you love your Nebraska ties.
- 16:02[SPEAKER_03]: But
- 16:03[SPEAKER_03]: You will always go down in college football history as a coach on arguably one of the greatest teams in the history in the worst sense.
- 16:11[SPEAKER_03]: You know, we as Nebraska, you know, we talk about the 94 and 95, 97 teams.
- 16:17[SPEAKER_03]: But that 2019 LSU team deserves similar recognition.
- 16:22[SPEAKER_03]: And that part of the country, that's the team that people are still talking about.
- 16:26[SPEAKER_03]: And so.
- 16:27[SPEAKER_03]: your journey has taken you different places, uh, but you'll always have that chapter and you'll always have that tie to the SEC.
- 16:34[SPEAKER_03]: So anytime then I would get a chance to give a tour to a national champion, ship coach in our office, it would be my honor.
- 16:40[SPEAKER_03]: And me, jiggle right now.
- 16:45[SPEAKER_04]: That would be incredible.
- 16:49[SPEAKER_00]: I will gladly buy a build.
- 16:51[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that would be great.
- 16:53[SPEAKER_04]: Ryan's a coffee room of the SEC.
- 16:55[SPEAKER_04]: Imagine getting coffee and Stanky rolls in.
- 16:57[SPEAKER_04]: That's it.
- 17:00[SPEAKER_04]: He is.
- 17:01[SPEAKER_01]: Garth, let's spend the SEC associate commissioner.
- 17:03[SPEAKER_01]: Garth takes much of the time.
- 17:05[SPEAKER_01]: Appreciate you.
- 17:05[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you.
- 17:06[SPEAKER_01]: Wow.
- 17:07[SPEAKER_01]: Not we back on early break in the ticket.
