- 0:00Hello, hello, here we are again.
- 0:04Hello, hello, here we are again. Today, we are talking about confidence.
- 0:14Today, we are talking about belief. And this is one of those episodes,
- 0:19it's going to get a little weird up in here.
- 0:22I love that. I love it. So we're going to get a little weird,
- 0:27we're going to talk about belief.
- 0:28Life and the reason I want to do it is
- 0:31because as business owners or if you're
- 0:33a freelancer this episode is not
- 0:36necessarily for employees although you might find nuggets but
- 0:40if you're a business owner there's this thing that happens
- 0:43and it's normal right our businesses go through ups and downs period if you're
- 0:50into running your own business or entrepreneurship because you think there's
- 0:56going to be stability or no changes,
- 1:01or you're going to be able to just make a plan and that plan is just going to
- 1:06100% happen exactly to the T.
- 1:09You're in the wrong business. Go work for a corporation if you want the stability
- 1:15and for nothing to change.
- 1:18Don't be an entrepreneur. So if you're an entrepreneur and you already know this,
- 1:22when it's in that down phase right it's up and it's down and when it's in that
- 1:29down phase it's really easy to just go right into those two feeling states of worry and fear.
- 1:40Worry and fear. We just immediately go into these two places and neither of
- 1:49these places, neither of these feelings propel our business forward.
- 1:54But we just go right into it. And it's interesting because worry,
- 1:59more than fear, because sometimes fear can propel you, sometimes fear is beneficial to forward momentum.
- 2:09But worry is a recipe for procrastination.
- 2:15And it literally does nothing to help you.
- 2:20And I'll give you a personal example, which I don't know, it shouldn't make
- 2:25me laugh, but it really does make me laugh.
- 2:27So recently my daughter lost a
- 2:31ring and it wasn't an
- 2:35expensive ring but it was a ring that
- 2:37meant a lot to her and her aunt great aunt had bought it for her at the beach
- 2:45a few years ago and we tend to spend summer times at the beach with our italian
- 2:52relatives i know it's as amazing as it sounds.
- 2:56But so this great aunt had bought her this ring as a gift on the beach,
- 3:01you know, not expensive, but it meant, you know, it meant a great deal to her
- 3:06and it was a gift and she lost it.
- 3:08And she had a meltdown.
- 3:11As we do. She lost a ring. She didn't know where she lost it.
- 3:16It felt like it was gone forever.
- 3:18And she went straight into worry and fear and shame and guilt.
- 3:24I think we're mixed up in that too and she just was inconsolable.
- 3:30And as a coach, sometimes I have to remember not to try to coach my daughter through every emotion.
- 3:39But I tried to remind her that worrying about it wasn't going to fix anything.
- 3:44It wasn't going to change the situation.
- 3:47It was out of her control at this point. And she needed to just wait and be
- 3:52patient and see if the situation was going to change.
- 3:58Was someone going to find it was it
- 4:01yeah i mean basically the only two things
- 4:04that could happen were someone would find it or it would be gone
- 4:07forever and worrying about
- 4:11either outcome when we don't know for sure what the outcome will be there was
- 4:15still time she had just lost it so there was still time for the situation to
- 4:20reverse itself but that worry and i and there's sadness in there and that's fine.
- 4:29I'm not saying don't feel all the feelings, but this feeling of worry just really
- 4:34got in there and grabbed hold of her and worried about, will I ever find it again?
- 4:43So as I suspected, because she had told me what had happened,
- 4:48it was at her friend's house. It was just sitting on the table.
- 4:52They were playing with clay.
- 4:53She took off her ring. She put it on the table. Her friend found it the next day.
- 4:57The amount of emotion that transpired between day one and day two was a phenomenal amount of emotion.
- 5:07And this is what we do as business owners.
- 5:11We know the down is coming. And yet when it comes, we go straight into worry.
- 5:18We go straight into emotions, we go straight into self-pity,
- 5:23we go into shame, we go into guilt, we go into scarcity, we go into fear.
- 5:28And a lot of times we just shut down. That's it.
- 5:31It just stops us in our tracks and we stop working on our business because we
- 5:37feel so bad about ourselves.
- 5:38We're in so much shame that we don't want, we're embarrassed to go out and talk
- 5:43about what we're doing because we feel so unsuccessful.
- 5:47And let me tell you, people, it doesn't matter if you run a small business,
- 5:54or you're a solopreneur, or you're a medium-sized business, or you're a big
- 5:59business. I'm not going to say corporate.
- 6:01I'm talking independently run. But even if you're on the larger side,
- 6:07this will affect you unless you have cleaned it up.
- 6:14It doesn't matter if you have a million bucks in the bank. It doesn't matter
- 6:19if you have three months of salary put aside.
- 6:22It doesn't matter if you have no money the feeling
- 6:26is the same isn't that interesting because somewhere
- 6:29in your brain if you don't have a million in the bank you're thinking well i
- 6:33wouldn't go into scarcity if i had a million bucks in the bank but guess what
- 6:36i had a client who had a million bucks in the bank and went into scarcity and
- 6:41fear when the business hit a dip it's so normal in a business for it to hit a dip that.
- 6:49It's really normal. And yes, you do want money in the bank to cover the dips.
- 6:55You want to be ready for them because they will always come.
- 6:58And if you've been in business for a while, you'll know precisely when they're going to come.
- 7:04You can see the patterns in your sales cycles of when those slowdowns typically hit.
- 7:11For some people, it's around the holidays, which could be summer or winter.
- 7:17Some businesses pick up, ironically, in the winter and the summer.
- 7:22I know my husband's business goes gangbusters at the end of the year because
- 7:27every client is trying to burn budget so they get that budget back the next year.
- 7:32And so it just feels like they're always on overtime the last couple weeks of the year.
- 7:39Whereas I, for instance, am always in a slow period at the end of the year.
- 7:45Okay, so that's where we're at. We know it's coming. We go into this worry.
- 7:50We can't help ourselves. It didn't matter how many pep talks I gave my daughter.
- 7:55It did not lessen the emotionality. It didn't lessen the fear.
- 8:01And I can speak for myself, too, that I've definitely been in that cycle of fear and worry.
- 8:07And we perpetuate it because there's something that
- 8:10feels a little comforting too about being
- 8:13there there's something it's a little bit like a
- 8:15warm blanket like oh here it is again here's my shame let me just pull it up
- 8:21over my my shoulders and let it just be there and because sometimes we need
- 8:28a forced slowdown for some people who have a hard time slowing down.
- 8:34Sometimes we go into this guilt and shame to force ourselves to stop which is
- 8:40kind of an ironic thing that we do but sometimes it's the only thing that will
- 8:44get us to slow down or stop because we go into this procrastination cycle because
- 8:49we feel like nothing's working so here's what i want to say.
- 8:54When those moments come okay here's where
- 8:56we're gonna get weird we need to practice belief
- 9:00and it's so hard because it feels
- 9:03so woo-woo and not connected to real life
- 9:06business but there's something about when you believe you have a different level
- 9:13of confidence when you believe that your services and your skills and your talents
- 9:21and your gifts are exactly what people need.
- 9:24And it doesn't matter if they're running through the door right now,
- 9:29but you believe so strongly that you can help people with whatever service you provide,
- 9:36with whatever product you've created if you
- 9:40believe in it so wholeheartedly it
- 9:45doesn't matter if people are banging down your door
- 9:48because you're going to keep showing up so in
- 9:51the slow time take a breath remember
- 9:56what you do remember how well
- 9:59you do it and go into that
- 10:02belief here's what's going to happen okay to
- 10:05reconnect it to real life things when you
- 10:09believe and you have confidence and you
- 10:14are very grounded in what
- 10:17you can do you do it it's as easy as that belief is an emotion which it doesn't
- 10:26seem like it but it's so much an emotion it's such a heart-led emotion when
- 10:31you really believe in yourself, when you really believe that.
- 10:35Whatever you want to believe that gets your heart pumping and excited,
- 10:39like the universe will provide.
- 10:41There will always be another client for me. My business is fine. It's always been fine.
- 10:47We've never not had clients. Whatever your mantra is, it can be anything.
- 10:53It can be aliens are connected to me.
- 10:57They believe they are going to like infuse cash into my business.
- 11:00It doesn't matter what the belief is, quite frankly.
- 11:04If it gets your blood pumping and the butterflies in your stomach and it gives
- 11:09you a feeling of excitement,
- 11:11that excitement is going to propel you to do the work that's going to be required
- 11:17to actually make those things happen.
- 11:20So I'm not going to give you the ingredients for bringing
- 11:23in new clients that's a different topic but it
- 11:26has to start from belief because if you're
- 11:29in worry or you're in scarcity or you're in.
- 11:32Shame and you're running the circles to
- 11:36keep those emotions going to keep pushing
- 11:39them forward guess what happens it's like an
- 11:42anchor it just pulls you down it pulls
- 11:45you away from your path it pulls you
- 11:48out of motivation and it puts you
- 11:51into procrastination and that can look a variety of
- 11:54ways you can still be showing up at work looking busy
- 11:57but it doesn't mean you're doing the things that
- 12:01are going to propel your business forward we can all sit down
- 12:03and like work on spreadsheets until we're blue in the face
- 12:06and it feels so productive i am the queen of
- 12:09spreadsheets i love finance and so
- 12:13i get myself in there and i start cranking on some
- 12:15some formulas I feel like every business plan
- 12:18starts with a hundred formulas because for
- 12:23me it's busy work it feels so productive but if
- 12:25I take a step back those spreadsheets are not
- 12:28going to land me more business it's something but sometimes it's better not
- 12:33to do something right it's sometimes it's better to just sit in belief so that
- 12:39when I come back to the computer I'm actually doing things that are going to
- 12:42drive business instead of just doing math all day, which is great.
- 12:47And it's weird for me to even say that. I think it's fun because that was not my MO growing up.
- 12:54I never liked math, but I love it now because it's this very easy language to understand.
- 13:01Whereas sometimes the complexity of business strategy and growth strategy is
- 13:07a place where my brain isn't ready to accept how good I am at that either, right?
- 13:13I just shame myself. Like, I must not be good at that.
- 13:16I'm in a downturn in the business.
- 13:19I must be awful at what I do. Right?
- 13:22You're not awful. Okay, let me just be the first person to tell you,
- 13:26if you're running a business and it's making money, you're on fire.
- 13:31Okay, because there are a lot of people who start businesses and a lot of people
- 13:35who never make a dime in their business.
- 13:38So if you're making money in your business, just give yourself a huge pat on
- 13:43the back. I don't care how much money you're making.
- 13:45If you made any amount of money this year already in quarter one of 2025,
- 13:51give yourself a humongous pat on the back because every
- 13:54dime that you bring into your business you created
- 13:58that with your brain out of nowhere and you
- 14:01brought in money really
- 14:04like you just invented it from nowhere and that is a feat so if you've been
- 14:10doing this for a while and you've been driving revenue into your business just
- 14:15take a deep breath because that is a skill and yes we can up level it and yes
- 14:21we can tweak it. And yes, we can make it better.
- 14:23But you will always have a slow period. You will always have a downturn.
- 14:28You always have a client that leaves.
- 14:30You will always have a team member who leaves.
- 14:33Things will constantly, always change. That is the known. There are lots of unknowns.
- 14:41But then I'm laughing so much today. I don't know why I find this topic really funny,
- 14:46but because it seems so obvious right we know
- 14:49it's coming and yet it smashes over
- 14:52our heads every single time and i'm laughing
- 14:55because it just happens to me all the time where i'm like it always changes
- 15:00it always comes back like the wave you know dips down and then it goes back
- 15:05out it happens every single time but for some reason when that wave starts you
- 15:11know coming over my head I feel so overwhelmed and scared.
- 15:16And it's always okay. Okay, it's not always okay in the world and our lives,
- 15:24but we need to believe that we're going to be safe, that we're going to be fine.
- 15:30Because when you watch that wave coming overhead, you can either ride it and
- 15:35have fun and just feel like blissed out or you can let it smash on your head
- 15:42or you can let it push you to the bottom,
- 15:45and be scared trying to like eke your way back up.
- 15:49I've been in every one of those scenarios in real life. I grew up in California.
- 15:54I've been smashed by many waves and I have been standing in the middle of the
- 15:59water watching humongous waves come in and feel super scared and not sure how
- 16:04I was going to deal with it.
- 16:05And every time I remembered, I know how to do this.
- 16:09When the wave was coming, I'm like, I have three choices. I can ride it.
- 16:13I can plug my nose and go under it.
- 16:16Or I can let it smash me, but I know what to do. Why would I let it smash me? That part sucks.
- 16:23And when I was little, I got smashed a lot because I just didn't have my technique down.
- 16:29But I survived. I'm here. I'm talking to you. I'm an old lady.
- 16:34Okay, I'm middle-aged. But I'm here. And I've experienced this so many times.
- 16:42I've run three businesses in my life. and this happens. It's normal.
- 16:48It happens at every size. I work with big companies with lots of money in the
- 16:53bank and they still get surprised when the wave comes and they don't know what to do.
- 16:59You know what to do and it starts with belief.
- 17:03And if you're in a slow period, don't just grind yourself thinking.
- 17:08Okay, it's slow. I got to grind, grind, grind.
- 17:10That's not the answer. go and find
- 17:13a way to believe take a step back
- 17:16go do some self-care take a
- 17:19breath take a walk i know it doesn't feel like
- 17:22it should work i know it that's why it
- 17:25sounds so weird to even say it because i'm a math person
- 17:28i'm so grounded in reality but
- 17:32what i've learned time and time again is if
- 17:35i get scared and i start grinding and i start pushing
- 17:38and i start trying too hard nothing works
- 17:41when i step back and i
- 17:44remember how good i am at this and
- 17:47i get into belief and i start meditating and exercising and taking more walks
- 17:52and getting outside it all starts to work because when i sit down at my computer
- 17:58i'm doing the work i need to do I'm not desperate. I'm not grinding.
- 18:04I'm in my zone of genius.
- 18:08I'm in my comfort level. I'm in my confidence and I'm doing things to move my
- 18:14business forward from there.
- 18:17Now that sounds logical, right? That doesn't sound woo-woo at all.
- 18:22You can even hear it in my voice.
- 18:25The energy shifts when you take a step back.
- 18:29When you are the owner of a company, and you are used to being in the weeds
- 18:33and you are used to being there every day and you feel like you have to be an
- 18:37example to your team, remember.
- 18:40Being an example to your team also means sometimes we got to step back.
- 18:46Sometimes we have to take a break. Sometimes we have to take a breath.
- 18:50And trust me, being that kind of leader, being that kind of example is what
- 18:57we need more of in the world.
- 18:59We don't need to keep showing people grind and be proud of working 60, 70, 80 hour weeks.
- 19:06No, that is not what we are here to do.
- 19:08That is not what we're here to do we're here
- 19:11to believe in ourselves make impact
- 19:15find alignment with the way we want
- 19:17to work the way we want to make shifts in our
- 19:21own lives in other people's lives we have
- 19:25the power as business owners to shift
- 19:29ways of working so that it works
- 19:32better works better for us works better for
- 19:35our teams works better for our clients and it
- 19:38starts with recognizing when you're
- 19:41in worry recognizing when you're in shame or
- 19:44guilt or overdoing all these feelings that are not propelling you forward don't
- 19:52feel like riding the wave and having fun feels like you're just getting smashed
- 19:57over and over over the head take a step back go do a meditation.
- 20:04Trust me, trust me, trust me. After years and years and years of experience
- 20:09and after years of working with
- 20:12clients of all sizes, with all different amounts of money in the bank,
- 20:18it's not about the money in the bank.
- 20:21It's about you. It's about how you show up, what you're willing to do for yourself,
- 20:26how you're going to advocate for yourself.
- 20:28I don't want to say stand up for yourself because this is your own internal
- 20:32battle, right, of worry and shame versus excitement and confidence.
- 20:41So give yourself time to be in those feelings of shame and guilt and worry.
- 20:46We don't want to shove them down or buffer away from them or pretend like they're not there.
- 20:53Allow them for however much time you need to.
- 20:57But then remember, when you believe, when you have confidence in yourself, things will shift.
- 21:07Things will shift. I promise you.
- 21:11And if you've had this experience of thinking you should grind and then it not
- 21:17working, and then taking a step back and having more belief and confidence and
- 21:21then seeing it work, please share it.
- 21:24Because I think the more we realize that this does work, that it's not super woo-woo,
- 21:29that it is where we can grow our businesses and just have more grounding in
- 21:35our business and more understanding of the up and down cycles and just to be
- 21:40more comfortable with that process, please share.
- 21:46Share in, you know, wherever you're reading this podcast.
- 21:50Reading. If you're reading my blog, if you're listening to the podcast,
- 21:55just add a comment with your story.
- 21:58If you're on LinkedIn with me, just please share your story because I think
- 22:02we just need to see that this works, that it's a real tool, that it's a real
- 22:07skill, that if we get into this space just works better for our businesses.
- 22:12It's not a woo-woo bullshit thing, I promise you.
- 22:16All right, I'm going to leave it at that. I will talk to you next week.
