- 0:08the New York Mets faced the Baltimore Orioles
- 0:11in an interleague exhibition game at Lawrence
- 0:13Stadium in Portsmouth, Virginia. New York was
- 0:16managed by Casey Stengel, who was trying to avoid
- 0:18a third consecutive 100 -loss season for the
- 0:20Mets. The O's were managed by Hank Bauer in his
- 0:24first season with Baltimore after managing the
- 0:26Kansas City Athletics in 1961 and 62. This audio
- 0:30recording is from the radio broadcast featuring
- 0:32announcers Bob Murphy, Lindsay Nelson, and Ralph
- 0:35Kiner. From Portsmouth, Virginia, the New York
- 0:40Mets are on the air. Today the New York Mets

- 1:35Portsmouth, absolutely beautiful for the final
- 1:38exhibition game. Not a cloud in the sky, a brilliant
- 1:41blue sky, a sunny day and the temperature in
- 1:44the 60s. Right now, Casey Stengel and Hank Bauer
- 1:47at home plate getting together with the umpires
- 1:49to exchange the batting order slip. The lineups
- 1:53and batting orders for today's game. The New
- 1:56York Mets, the visiting team, will have Dick
- 1:58Smith at first base. He will lead off. Rod Keneal
- 2:01in center field hitting second. Ron Hunt flying
- 2:05third base, batting third. Jim Hickman, the left
- 2:09fielder, will be the cleanup hitter. Bob Taylor
- 2:11behind the plate hitting number five. Joe Christopher
- 2:15in right field hitting sixth. Sammy Samuel playing
- 2:19second base and hitting seventh. Al Moran will
- 2:22be at shortstop batting eighth and on the mound
- 2:24hitting ninth, Tracy Stoller. In front of field
- 2:27leading off for the birds will be fleet -footed
- 2:29Jackie Brandt. Louie Aparicio, the shortstop,
- 2:32hitting second. Big John Powell, the left fielder,
- 2:35hitting third. Norm Siebern, the first baseman
- 2:38to hit cleanup. John Orsino, behind the plate,
- 2:42he will hit number five. Willie Kirkland in right
- 2:45field hitting sixth. Brooks Robinson, the brilliant
- 2:48Orioles' third baseman, hitting seventh. Jerry
- 2:51Adair, the second baseman, batting eighth. And
- 2:54on the mound, hard -throwing left -hander and
- 2:5620 -game winner, Steve Barber. Barber pitching
- 2:59and hitting ninth. The batteries then for today's
- 3:03game. For the New York Mets, Tracy Stallard on
- 3:06the mound and Bob Taylor behind the plate. For
- 3:09the Baltimore Orioles, Steve Barber will handle
- 3:11the pitching and John Orsino working behind the
- 3:14plate. The umpires, Luther Muro of the American
- 3:17League behind the plate, Ed Sudol of the National
- 3:20League will be at first, and Paul Crawford of
- 3:22the Stanley League will call the plays around
- 3:24third. Following today's game, the New York Mets
- 3:28will be flying to New York. Tomorrow, they will
- 3:30be given a day off by Casey Stengel as they prep
- 3:34for the opening of the National League season
- 3:35against the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday
- 3:37night. And right now, ladies and gentlemen, here
- 3:40in Portsmouth, which is just across the river
- 3:41from Norfolk, Virginia, the Marine Corps Color
- 3:44Guard is coming on the field, and the fans here
- 3:47in Portsmouth are watching today's ballgame.
- 3:49We'll be standing in a moment for the playing
- 3:51of our national anthem and a moment of silence
- 3:54in respect of the memory of the General of the
- 3:57Army, Douglas McGrath, who went to his final
- 3:59resting place this morning in nearby Norfolk,
- 4:02Virginia. So we'll be waiting for a moment until
- 4:06the Marine Corps color guard reaches the flagpole
- 4:10for the ceremony. Over 300 ,000 people crowded
- 4:16the streets for the procession. The burial of
- 4:20General of the Army Douglas MacArthur, who, as
- 4:23everyone connected with sports realizes, was
- 4:25such a tremendous friend of sports throughout
- 4:27his entire life. Following the game, the Mets
- 4:33will fly back to New York. They are estimated
- 4:35to get back to Idlewild around 7 .30 this evening.
- 4:38They will have tomorrow off. They open the National
- 4:41League season on Tuesday night against the Phillies,
- 4:43and the pitchers in the Tuesday night opener
- 4:44will be Dennis Bennett for Philadelphia and Al
- 4:47Jackson for the New York Mets, a battle of left
- 4:50-handers. Bennett, an outstanding young left
- 4:52-hander, missed the first half of last year due
- 4:54to an automobile injury, but came back to pitch
- 4:57very well the second half of the season. Al Jackson
- 5:00has paced the Mets pitching staff in victories
- 5:02over their first two years of existence and has
- 5:05the honor of opening the season for the New York
- 5:07Mets on Tuesday night. The Mets and Phillies
- 5:10play again on Wednesday night. Next Thursday
- 5:12will be an off day. And then next Friday, the
- 5:15historic opening of beautiful new Shea Stadium,
- 5:18which will seat 55 ,300 with 96 % of the seats
- 5:22within the foul line and every seat an individual
- 5:26seat. Weather permitting, it should be a tremendous
- 5:29occasion when the Mets and the Pirates open the
- 5:32new stadium next Friday afternoon in Flushing.
- 5:35By the way, on Monday, the Jamaica Chamber of
- 5:39Commerce will honor the New York Mets ball club
- 5:42with a parade leading the Sadler's Motel at 10
- 5:44.15 in the morning, parading through Flushing
- 5:47and Jamaica, and then a luncheon in honor of
- 5:49the New York Mets at the Whitman Hotel in Jamaica
- 5:51on Monday noon. So a lot has been planned, and
- 5:55everything is just about set now for the opening
- 5:57of the National League season. We will have the
- 6:00traditional early openers on Monday. Houston
- 6:03will be opening in Cincinnati in the traditional
- 6:06early opening for the National League in Cincinnati.
- 6:11Right now, Steve Barber. has completed his pregame
- 6:17warm -up tosses, and everyone now here at the
- 6:19ballpark is waiting for the national anthem and
- 6:22a tribute to General MacArthur. Here, ladies
- 6:24and gentlemen, our national anthem. anthem and
- 8:36the tribute paid to General of the Army Douglas
- 8:39MacArthur, we approach game time here in Portsmouth,
- 8:42Virginia with Steve Barber on the mound for the
- 8:44Oilers. You know, back home in the most spectacular
- 8:47new Shea Stadium, everything is mighty impressive.
- 8:50Perhaps the most impressive piece of equipment
- 8:52is that big Ryan Gould scoreboard. You're going
- 8:54to really enjoy seeing it. You'll not only see
- 8:57the score, of course, exactly where the game
- 8:59stands, but a picture of the batter and where
- 9:00he stands, his average. And on this scoreboard,
- 9:03there's another reminder. It says... Rheingold
- 9:06is as good to your taste as it is to your thirst.
- 9:09And isn't that exactly what you want a beer to
- 9:11be? The secret of Rheingold is a very special
- 9:14way of brewing. Rheingold is brewed extra dry.
- 9:18Smoother, crisper, livelier. We hope you've got
- 9:21some Rheingold around right this minute, wherever
- 9:23you are along the Rheingold Beach. If you do,
- 9:26well, we don't have to tell you that Rheingold
- 9:29is as good to your taste as it is to your thirst.
- 9:33Rheingold after Rheingold. Now, hard -throwing
- 9:41Steve Barber, a 20 -game winner with the Birds
- 9:43a year ago, is all set to go, and leading off
- 9:45in the ballgame against the South Ball will be
- 9:47Dick Smith. Putting up the Orioles defensively,
- 9:51Norm Seaburn is at first, Jerry Adair at second,
- 9:54Louie Amparicio at short, and Brooks Robinson
- 9:56at third. Now, Barber out of his windup, the
- 10:00game's first delivery, a slow grounder right
- 10:02back to the mound, taken by Barber. He throws
- 10:04to first, one away. In the outfield for the Orioles,
- 10:11John Powell is the left fielder, Jack Brand in
- 10:13center, and around and right, Willie Kirkland.
- 10:15Barber pitching, and Orsino behind the plate.
- 10:18As the ballplayers say, when they have to go
- 10:21up and hit against Steve Barber, he'll put bees
- 10:23in your bat. He really throws hard, and he has
- 10:24a great sinker. Outfield, the Tacoma Park left
- 10:31-hander fires. Knee -high fastball for a call
- 10:34strike. Well, you can tell that the Mets' home
- 10:38opener in Shea Stadium is just around the corner.
- 10:41No finer or higher bigger could you hope to detect
- 10:43than a giant Mets banner up in the top of the
- 10:45center field bleachers here in Portsmouth. Inside
- 10:48and low, one ball and one strike. Yes, sir, it's
- 10:52just about banner time again, and a group of
- 10:54youngsters here in Portsmouth have a banner that
- 10:56stretches, oh, I'd say a good 40 feet long, saying,
- 10:59we love the Mets. On the coaching line for the
- 11:05New York Mets, Wes Westrom at first base and
- 11:07Don Hefner at third. Now, Keneal cocks the bat,
- 11:11leans in and takes. It's outside, 2 -1. Casey
- 11:16getting his ball club tomorrow off after the
- 11:18long spring training grind. Probable workout
- 11:22on Monday and then the opening game Tuesday night
- 11:25with Jackson pitching against Dennis Bennett.
- 11:292 -1 delivery. Ground ball bounced on the right
- 11:31side of the diamond. Jerry Adair is up with it,
- 11:33throws on to Sebring, two down. Anytime Barber
- 11:38has that good finger ball going, you can tell
- 11:40right off the bat because what comes off the
- 11:42bat are ground balls. Now two outs and nobody
- 11:47on. Well, we're delighted to have our statistician
- 11:49Matt Winnick in our broadcasting booth today.
- 11:52Matt again this year will be with us, game in
- 11:54and game out, home and away, night and day across
- 11:56the land, chronicling the facts and figures of
- 11:59the New York Mets. who has been shifted over
- 12:07to third base, batting third in the order, stepping
- 12:09in against Steve Barber. It's thrown outside
- 12:13and high, one ball and no strike. Actually, when
- 12:16the Braves first signed Ron Hunt to a pro contract,
- 12:19they signed him with the idea of his being a
- 12:21third baseman. And he played third that first
- 12:24season. Ron, aggressive tight hitter, right -hand
- 12:31batter who hit .272 last year. Line drive down
- 12:35the right field line. A face hit for Ron Hunt.
- 12:37It's going down into the corner. Being chased
- 12:39by Willie Kirkland. Ron's on his way to second.
- 12:42He'll go in standing up with a double down the
- 12:44right field line. Barber throws hard. A very
- 12:48difficult pitcher to pull. Ron Hunt's hand to
- 12:51swing just right. It hit the outside fastball.
- 12:53A hard line drive right down the right field
- 12:56line for a double. Now here is Jim Hickman. While
- 13:05the New York Mets will open the National League
- 13:07season Tuesday night against the Phillies, the
- 13:10Orioles will be opening their American League
- 13:11season against the White Sox in Chicago. Big
- 13:19banner out in the center of the field says, We
- 13:20love the Mets. Swing and a miss on a sinker,
- 13:23strike one. We love EA the Mets. Thank you for
- 13:32having that banner. We hope we'll see you around
- 13:34Jay Stadium all summer long. Banner Day last
- 13:39year in the polo grounds was an amazing sight.
- 13:43Now the pitch on the way by Barbara Lowe outside.
- 13:46Orsino has to dig it out. No one can ever accuse
- 13:50the Mets baseball fans of not being ingenious.
- 13:54They came up with more slogans, more poems to
- 13:58back their ball club. and probably helped the
- 14:01heat industry more than anybody else. Now Hickman
- 14:05was tied up, but it holds up, and the pitch is
- 14:07taken out of the strike zone. Two balls and a
- 14:10strike to Jim Hickman. Jim in left field, batting
- 14:12cleanup. One of my favorites of the programs
- 14:18last year among the banners was shortly after
- 14:20Carmel joined the ball club, Casey then had Duke
- 14:23Snyder and Duke Carmel. The banners simply said,
- 14:25Casey, put up your Duke. Ron Hunt is on second
- 14:34base, two men down. Now Barber off the stretch.
- 14:37Down comes the left arm, foul ball. He tried
- 14:40to hold up on the swing and fouled it away. So
- 14:42the count is even at two balls and two strikes.
- 14:45Next Friday at Shea Stadium, Guy Lombardo and
- 14:49his Royal Canadians will provide the pregame
- 14:51musical entertainment. When the time arrives
- 14:54for the singing of the national anthem, that
- 14:57magnificent Metropolitan Opera star Robert Merrill
- 15:00will sing the anthem. Now Barber up in pitching
- 15:08position deals two and two, a high fastball,
- 15:10and the string is out three and two. Nine Hall
- 15:15of Famers will be on hand for the opening of
- 15:17Shea Stadium on Friday, including the four new
- 15:19inductees. By the way, when the new members of
- 15:23the Hall are inducted in late July this season,
- 15:25the New York Mets will have the honor of playing
- 15:27the annual third rematch to the Hall of Fame
- 15:30against Washington that day. Swing and a miss,
- 15:32he's struck him out. Hickman goes down swinging
- 15:35on a high breaking ball. No runs, one hit, no
- 15:37errors, and one left on. Now the score in the
- 15:40middle of the first, the Mets nothing, and the
- 15:42Birds are coming to bat. Last half of the first
- 15:47inning here in Fort Smith on the mound for the
- 15:49New York Mets, Tracy Stallard, Bob Taylor behind
- 15:51the plate. Setting up New York defensively, Dick
- 15:54Smith will be at first. Sammy Samuel playing
- 15:57second, Al Moran at short, and playing at third,
- 16:00Ron Hunt. In the outfield, Jim Hickman is the
- 16:03left fielder. In center field for the New York
- 16:07Mets, Rod Keneal and around and right, Joe Christopher.
- 16:12On the coaching lines for the Orioles, Sherm
- 16:15Lawler on the lines at first and on the lines
- 16:17at third, Bill Hunter. Well, last year, both
- 16:20Dick Wurtz and Sherm Lawler were still playing
- 16:23Major League Baseball. Both retired at the end
- 16:25of last year. Now only one player remains active
- 16:29of the old St. Louis Browns. He'll be in action
- 16:31against the New York Mets in the opener on Tuesday
- 16:33night. Mr. Roy Seavers. Breaking ball on the
- 16:45outside corner. Don Larson would have to go into
- 16:48that category, beg your pardon. Larson still
- 16:49working as a bullpen pitcher for Alvin Dark and
- 16:52the San Francisco Giants. Here's the pitcher
- 16:56on the way. He holds up on a slow breaking ball
- 16:58that's outside. One ball and one strike. Brad
- 17:01having a good spring, batting at 316. He's an
- 17:05exciting ball player. He hits the ball through
- 17:08an infield about as fast as anybody in the majors.
- 17:10Foul ball off to the right, no play. Well, this
- 17:20is some kind of a day, I want to tell you, that
- 17:22you couldn't ask for a better one. We'd like
- 17:24to have it for the opener next Friday. We understand
- 17:26the weather in the New York area is just as good.
- 17:28A swing and a miss, he's struck him out. Tracy
- 17:31Stallard strikes out Jackie Brandt, one away.
- 17:38One of the most impressive things about Stallard
- 17:40this spring has been the psychological development,
- 17:43the mental improvement, so to speak, and the
- 17:45confidence that Stallard has gained. He has suddenly
- 17:49become more or less an elder statesman on the
- 17:51ball club, assured of a starting position, and
- 17:54it has given him a tremendous shot in the arm,
- 17:55a great deal more confidence, and you can see
- 17:57the way he pitches, he's pitching with more confidence.
- 17:59Fastball inside, one ball and no strike. Little
- 18:09Louie Aparicio, speedy right -hand hitter, wins.
- 18:12Strike on the outside corner, one ball and one
- 18:14strike. For the last eight years, Little Louie
- 18:16has led the American League in stolen bases.
- 18:18For the birds, he pilfered 40 a year ago. Ron
- 18:21Hunt plays him in close at third, even with the
- 18:24bag wide at the line. Shortening up the stride
- 18:27on the left side of the diamond is Al Morano.
- 18:28Line drives, stays fifth. Yep, down the left
- 18:30field line by Aparicio. Little Louie around first.
- 18:33He'll hold there as Hickman takes the ball back
- 18:35in. He's throwing that one. Hard line drive beyond
- 18:40the reach of Hunt and on into left field. That
- 18:44brings up Johnny Boog Powell. Powell has a six
- 18:48home runs this spring. As they say, he is big
- 18:53enough to go bear hunting with a buggy whip.
- 18:57He checked into spring camp weighing 251 pounds,
- 19:00but Hank Bauer has him melted down to about 234
- 19:03now. Now the stretch by Tracy, and he steps up.
- 19:11This fellow is just big and strong. Reminds you
- 19:15a great deal when he hits of Johnny Myers. Inside
- 19:18and low, one ball and no strike. Last year, at
- 19:25the age of 22, he led the Orioles in the power
- 19:28department, home runs, and runs batted in. One
- 19:36out and one on, no score, last half of inning
- 19:38number one. Game being sent to you with the best
- 19:41wishes of Ryan Gold Extra Drive. We hope you'll
- 19:44enjoy it. Now Tracy Ives, the runner, throws
- 19:48to first, not in time. Little Louie had to slide
- 19:51back. Anytime Aparicio's on, a pitcher really
- 19:53has to go to work. He has to throw over to first
- 19:56base four, five, maybe six times if he's going
- 19:59to keep him close. Throw to first, and he gets
- 20:02back. The main thing, you have to mix it up.
- 20:05You can't throw over there the same way every
- 20:07time. Sometimes a slow stretch, then you throw
- 20:09over, sometimes you wheel and throw. Way inside,
- 20:13and he goes behind on the count, two balls but
- 20:16no strikes. Norm Seaborn is the on -deck hitter,
- 20:23and then John Orsino. The Orioles in the spring
- 20:25have won 15, lost 11. 2 -0 delivery. An off -speed
- 20:34pitch that is fouled off to Pat Hamlin. The Cavs
- 20:362 -1. For the Orioles, they'll be opening Memorial
- 20:40Stadium in Baltimore after their opener in Chicago.
- 20:43They come back home to have a weekend series
- 20:45against the New York Yankees. Let's have the
- 20:56odds feel deep for Powell. This is quite a hitter's
- 20:58ballpark. If you can't hit him out of this park,
- 20:59you can't hit him out of any park. A throw to
- 21:01first. Close, but he's back. Down the right field
- 21:06line for the left -hand hitters is only 315 feet,
- 21:09and the ballpark really carries. The ball really
- 21:11carries in this park. Down the left field line,
- 21:13330. Flider on the inside corner of Goodwin -Bastala,
- 21:19two balls and two strikes. 365 feet to the center
- 21:23field bleachers, and it's not too difficult on
- 21:25a good day to hit them up in those bleachers.
- 21:29Last year when the Mets played here in Portsmouth,
- 21:31Eddie Crane, who already put the frosting on
- 21:33the cake of an outstanding spring and nailed
- 21:35down an opening day job by hitting free home
- 21:37runs. Two off Robin Roberts and one off Stu Miller.
- 21:41The 2 -2 delivery with the runner going is fouled
- 21:44off the end of the bat and no play. Hank Bauer,
- 21:52who of course played for Casey when Casey had
- 21:54the Yankees, the new Oriole manager. And he has
- 21:58as his coaches, Sean Waller. Billy Hunter, Gene
- 22:03Woodling, and his pitching coach is Harry the
- 22:05Cat for team. The Cat has been in Baltimore through
- 22:08the reigns of Paul Richards, Billy Hitchcock,
- 22:12and now Hank Bauer. Swing and a miss, he struck
- 22:14him out. Bauer strikes out foul. He got him with
- 22:18a high hard one. Now two outs and one on, Norm
- 22:22Seaborn coming on to hit. Norm hitting .276 for
- 22:28the spring. He came to the Orioles. In the swap
- 22:31with Kansas City for Jim Gentile. Well, a lot
- 22:40of interest in today's ball game here in Fort
- 22:42Smith. The public address system now asking if
- 22:44the fans would mind moving a little bit closer
- 22:47together so that those who are still outside
- 22:49trying to get in can get in to see the game.
- 22:52Breaking ball over at the knees. A call strike
- 22:54on Norm Seaver. Well, in one respect, we'll be
- 23:01driving back home following today's game. Our
- 23:03timing was a little bit off. They are building
- 23:07probably the world's largest, longest tunnel
- 23:10and bridge and causeway going across the Chesapeake
- 23:13Bay. A span of over 17 miles is going to open
- 23:17next Wednesday. We had thought we would be able
- 23:19to drive through going home tonight, but we'd
- 23:22have to hang around until Wednesday, and I don't
- 23:23want to miss that opener in Philadelphia. One
- 23:30and one to count on Norm's fever, but it's going
- 23:32to be one of the real engineering miracles of
- 23:34the times when it is completed and opened on
- 23:36Wednesday. Throw to first, not on time. We were
- 23:42always fascinated in spring training with that
- 23:44trip across the Sunshine Skyway across Tampa
- 23:46Bay. It was a little over 12 miles. This one
- 23:49will be over 17 miles. Hopped up off the first
- 23:53and foul ground. Bob Taylor is under it waiting,
- 23:55and the Hawk puts it away. The side is out. Strong
- 23:58pitching by Tracy Schaller. No runs, one hit,
- 24:01no errors, and one left on at the end of one
- 24:03inning. The score, the Mets nothing and the Orioles
- 24:06nothing. Well, if you're out for a leisurely
- 24:10drive today or you have some extra time on your
- 24:12hands, we suggest if you haven't done so that
- 24:15you take a drive and go by Chase Stadium. The
- 24:18ticket office is open. It also will be open for
- 24:20your convenience tomorrow to get your tickets
- 24:23for the big opening day game next Friday afternoon.
- 24:26Everything is just about in readiness. The stadium
- 24:29looks absolutely beautiful. The steel boxes,
- 24:32the loges, the mezzanine, the upper deck. The
- 24:36box seats are painted a little deeper shade than
- 24:39the reserved, and the reserved a little deeper
- 24:41than the unreserved. Burley and I are feeling
- 24:45the stadium the most modern sports plan in America,
- 24:47and you'll be a part of it. Only 55 ,300 people
- 24:51in this land of ours will be on hand for that
- 24:53very first game ever to be played in the stadium.
- 24:56Nine members of the Hall of Fame will be there,
- 24:58including the living ex -members of the Giants
- 25:01and Dodgers, plus the four new inductees, Luke
- 25:04Appling, Heine Mnuch, Red Faber, and Burley Grant.
- 25:08Robert Merrill sings the National Anthem. Guy
- 25:10Lombardo, musical entertainer before the game.
- 25:13Music for the National Anthem by the Department
- 25:15of Sanitation Band. All in all, one tremendous
- 25:18day. Next Friday at the Mets and the Pirates
- 25:21in Shea Stadium. Now with Barber on the mound,
- 25:33Hawk Taylor is up for the Mets as the game moves
- 25:35into the second inning. We're counting the youngsters
- 25:40up in the top of the center field bleachers that
- 25:42have that long banner. Pass ball over for a call
- 25:45strike. There are seven of them. They have a
- 25:47banner and they stretch it out. It goes maybe
- 25:5030 or 40 feet and we love the Mets. And a minute
- 25:53ago they had that familiar cry of the last two
- 25:55years, let's go Mets. Barber with a one -strike
- 26:03count, winds and pitches. Ground ball hit down
- 26:05to third, fielded by Brooks Robinson. He strides
- 26:08and throws, and they have him by a few running
- 26:09strides. One away, nobody on. On the hit now,
- 26:14the right fielder, Joe Christopher. Throughout
- 26:20spring training, with the exception of George
- 26:22Altman and Ron Hunt, Casey has been platooning
- 26:27elsewhere on his ball club and... This may be
- 26:30fairly close to the opening night lineup in Philadelphia
- 26:33since Gene Mock has already announced that he
- 26:35will open the National League season against
- 26:37the Mets with the left -hander Dennis Bennett.
- 26:42Here's the pitcher on the way. It's over at the
- 26:44knees for a called strike. It will be touch and
- 26:48go as to whether or not George Altman will be
- 26:50ready for the opening game on Tuesday night.
- 26:52Trainer Gus Mott is hopeful and feels that, since
- 26:55it is only a bruise despite the fact that it's
- 26:57quite sore today, but he still may be able to
- 27:00open on Tuesday. One ball and one strike. George
- 27:05did not come to the ballpark today. He was advised
- 27:07by Gus to remain back at the hotel and take heat
- 27:10treatments and rest as much as possible. Carl
- 27:14Willey and Frank Thomas are both back in New
- 27:16York. Now Barbarana is lined up. The pitch, swing,
- 27:20and a miss on a fastball thrown in tight. One
- 27:23ball and two strikes. Now Jack Fisher is starting
- 27:29to warm up easily in the bullpen. Casey wants
- 27:31to give Stallard, Fisher, and Bernard all some
- 27:34work. Final tune -up work in this ballgame today.
- 27:37Outside and high. For Hank Bauer, his pitching
- 27:40plans are quite different because he is not planning
- 27:43to use Barber until the opener at home in Baltimore
- 27:47against the Yankees next Friday. And since Barber
- 27:50will not be pitching then until next Friday,
- 27:52he may have him go as far as seven innings. Fisher
- 27:56and Stallard figure to work games two and three
- 27:58for the Mets. Line drive, base hit through the
- 28:00hole going to right field. That's base hit number
- 28:05two. Both have been to right field by right -hand
- 28:07hitters, and it brings up Sammy Thornwell. Game
- 28:32being held up just for a moment by Umpire Lou
- 28:36DeMuro, who noticed that they need a doctor in
- 28:38the right field bleacher. So someone obviously
- 28:43in need of attention in the right field bleachers,
- 28:45and the game is being held up. Very alert work
- 28:48on the part of Umpire Lou DeMuro, who detected
- 28:50that there was a disturbance over in the right
- 28:52field bleachers, and in a small ballpark such
- 28:54as this, he was able to tell that someone was
- 28:57in need of attention, and so they have asked
- 28:58for the doctor. Good crowd on a perfect day for
- 29:07a ball game. Every seat taken in the grandstand.
- 29:11The bleachers comparatively empty, but now we
- 29:13see a lot of the fans are headed toward the bleachers,
- 29:15unable to get a seat. Ground ball hit down to
- 29:17first, knocked down by Seaburn. He makes the
- 29:19unassisted play getting found well, and Christopher
- 29:21moves on to second. Now there are two away here
- 29:30on the top of the second. Al Moran comes up.
- 29:41Al Moran batting right -handed. Al has done quite
- 29:46a bit of experimenting during the spring, trying
- 29:48to improve his hitting. Bill Dickey worked with
- 29:50him quite a bit, trying more than anything to
- 29:52get him to hit down on the ball. Al Barber up
- 29:57in pitching position. Delivers outside and high.
- 30:01One of the great hitters in the history of the
- 30:02game, Paul Wainer. Big boys have always said
- 30:06that the... Top half of the ball belongs to the
- 30:09hitter. The bottom half of the ball belongs to
- 30:11the pitcher. If you hit under, you're going to
- 30:13pop up. If you hit down on it, you might come
- 30:15up with a base hit. Now Barber makes the stop,
- 30:22then delivers to Moran. Over on the outside corner
- 30:25of the knees for a strike. One ball and one strike.
- 30:40Joe Christopher on second, two men down, top
- 30:42of the second, no score. Foul tipped. Pops out
- 30:48of the middle of John Orsino, no damage done.
- 30:51One ball and two strikes. Mets with two night
- 30:56games in Philadelphia, Tuesday night and Wednesday
- 30:58night, Thursday the off day and the big opener
- 31:01on Friday. Monday will be a big day for the New
- 31:04York Mets. As we mentioned earlier, they will
- 31:06be honored with a parade starting at 10 .15 from
- 31:09the Travelers Motel, winding through Fletching
- 31:11and Jamaica, and winding up with a luncheon in
- 31:13the Whitman Hotel in Jamaica. Foul. Hit down
- 31:17the right field line. Out of play. Hard -throwing
- 31:31young right -hander that means so much to the
- 31:33Baltimore Orioles, Chuck Estrada made the catch
- 31:35on that one over the bullpen. Talking to Jack
- 31:40Fisher about Estrada, they were very close friends
- 31:42when Jack was with the Orioles, and he says that
- 31:44Estrada says he no longer, and for the first
- 31:47time in over a year, does not feel pain when
- 31:49he throws. He's been throwing hard. The one -two
- 31:52pitch, outside and high. Did you notice where
- 31:56the St. Louis Cardinals are leaving Ray Weinspern
- 31:58with their Jacksonville Fire Club in order that
- 32:00they can keep him out of the cold weather and
- 32:03not run the risk of him re -injuring that arm
- 32:05in the first couple of weeks of the season? Also
- 32:07give him a chance to strengthen his arm in the
- 32:09sunshine before coming up to join St. Louis.
- 32:13The 2 -2 delivery. Swing, and a Murphy struck
- 32:16him out with a sinker down around the ankle.
- 32:19Brad retired, no runs, one hit, no errors, and
- 32:21one left. At the end of an inning and a half,
- 32:23the score in Portsmouth... The New York Mets,
- 32:26nothing, and the Baltimore Orioles, nothing.
- 32:28And let's hear how a baseball fan makes up for
- 32:31an error in his choice of a cigarette. Oh, I
- 32:36don't believe it. Not another error. Boy, I sure
- 32:41made an error. Huh? Trying this new menthol cigarette.
- 32:45What do you mean? It just doesn't make it. Well,
- 32:49here's one that does. Try it cool. Cool? Okay.
- 33:00This is more like it. Your cigarette's not tasting
- 33:04cool enough till you come up to cool. With rich
- 33:08tobacco's pure white filter, extra coolness too.
- 33:12Feel extra coolness in your throat as cool comes
- 33:16through for you. You'll be smoking cool, cool
- 33:21all the time when you come up to cool. For the
- 33:27most refreshing coolness you can get. In any
- 33:30cigarette, smoke cool with the pure white filter.
- 33:38Last half of the second, John Orsino comes up
- 33:41against Tracy Stallard. After coming to the Orioles
- 33:44in the deal with San Francisco, last year Orsino
- 33:49knocked in 56 runs and batted 272. He did a good
- 33:52job for them. John Arfino, right -hand hitter
- 34:00out of Teaneck, New Jersey. Tracy Stallard on
- 34:07the mound for the New York Mets. Last half of
- 34:10the second, no scores. Tracy winds. The pitch
- 34:13breaks too far outside. One ball and no strike.
- 34:23The Orioles and Giants made a big deal during
- 34:26the winter before last season. Breaking ball,
- 34:29and he lays off. Two balls and no strikes. Sue
- 34:34Miller and Mike McCormick, along with John Orsino,
- 34:36came to the birds for Billy Heft, Jack Fisher,
- 34:39now with the Mets, and Jim Coker. All three of
- 34:42those players, Billy Heft, Jack Fisher, and Jim
- 34:44Coker, have now gone to other ball clubs. Inside.
- 34:48Ball 30, it's 3 -0. Coker has just gone in a
- 34:51deal involving the Los Angeles Dodgers. I'll
- 35:03check that involving the Philadelphia Bills,
- 35:04thank you, partner. Pitchers outside in Stallard,
- 35:07Watson, or Fino are in four pitches. Now the
- 35:22right fielder, Willie Kirkland, hitting for the
- 35:24first time. Willie during the spring, hitting
- 35:26.227. Now Tracy off the stretch. Delivers, bounce,
- 35:36foul. He barely got a piece of it. One strike
- 35:39count on Willie Kirkland. Outside and high. I
- 36:00remember he was playing tricks on me. Ralph was
- 36:01freaking me out on the trade. Gary Kolb and Jim
- 36:07Coker leaving the Cardinals for Bob Euchre and
- 36:11the Braves. Off -speed delivery that's over for
- 36:15a called strike. Good pitch by Stallard. One
- 36:17ball and two strikes. The deal involving the
- 36:19Dodgers was the Dodgers and the Detroit Tigers.
- 36:24Larry Sherry going to Detroit for Lou Johnson.
- 36:33I trace the up and pitching position, the 1 -2
- 36:35delivery. I drive and the air sinking rapidly
- 36:37in short center field at the base hit, played
- 36:39on the hop by Rod Caneo. And now the birds have
- 36:42runners on first and second, nobody out. Right
- 36:44here we pause for station identification. This
- 36:48is the New York Mets baseball network. WGY and
- 36:51WGF fans connect today. The beautiful... And
- 36:58New York, 10 -5. Bob Murphy with Ralph Kiner
- 37:03and Lindsey Nelson from Fort Smith, Virginia.
- 37:06Now Brooks Robinson is up with runners on first
- 37:09and second, nobody out. The Mets here will be
- 37:11defensing against the possibility of a bunt.
- 37:13Jerry Adaris, the on -deck batter, and then Steve
- 37:16Barber. Now Tracy off the stretch. Delivers.
- 37:21Just inside. One ball and no strike. Brooks has
- 37:35not hit for a high average during the spring
- 37:37games, but he has been hitting with power. He's
- 37:39hit four home runs, and he leads the Orioles
- 37:41in RBIs for the spring. Runners on first and
- 37:47second, nobody out. Pitch to Robinson. Full swing
- 37:50and a foul ball back into the screen. One ball
- 37:52and one strike. Hank Bauer has Robinson swinging
- 37:56away with a dare of the number eight hitter on
- 37:59deck to be followed by the pitcher, Steve Barber.
- 38:13Tracy slowing himself down a little bit, trying
- 38:15to pitch out of a jam here in the second. The
- 38:17birds have the table set, two on and nobody out.
- 38:21Here's the pitch underway. Inside and high, two
- 38:24balls and a strike. Baltimore a year ago got
- 38:32off to a flying start. They were really winging.
- 38:36But they fell victims to a June swoon. They had
- 38:39a stress during June when the roof really fell
- 38:41in on them and knocked them right out of the
- 38:42front of race. 2 -1 on Brooks Robinson. The lead
- 38:55runner on second is John Orsino. Willie Kirkland
- 38:57is on first. Now the pitch thrown. Line drive
- 39:02hit hard down the left field line at phase fifth.
- 39:05Hickman racing over to the line to play at around
- 39:07third heading in. The score is John Orsino and
- 39:10the birds lead 1 -0 on the run scoring single
- 39:12to left by Brooks Robinson. Willie Kirkland goes
- 39:15from first to third. Jerry Adair, the second
- 39:33baseman. Two years ago, Jerry had a real good
- 39:36year. Last season, he fell off at the plate.
- 39:38He was tampered several times during the season
- 39:41with minor hurts that had him in and out of the
- 39:43lineup. Mets set up, hoping for a shot at the
- 39:48double play. A line drive to right field, a base
- 39:50hit by Adair. Kirkland comes in to score. Robinson
- 39:53will hold his second. and the Mets nothing on
- 40:07the single to right by Jerry Adair. Now Steve
- 40:10Barber comes up. With Barber hitting, runners
- 40:13on first and second, nobody out. Now the Mets
- 40:15will be defending against the Bucs. Barber batting
- 40:20left -handed. First four men up have reached
- 40:25safely against Ballard here in the last half
- 40:27of the second. Fisher still cranking up down
- 40:33in the bullpen. He's around to Brunt. Brunt,
- 40:35fair ball. Stallard coming off the mound. The
- 40:37play goes to third. Out at third. They get Robinson.
- 40:41Close play at third, but Stallard threw just
- 40:43in time to Ron Hunt. To fourth, Brooks Robinson.
- 40:56Now runners on first and second, one man down.
- 40:59Top of the batting order for the center fielder,
- 41:01Jackie Brandt. Pratt was struck out in the first
- 41:04inning by Stallard. Baltimore 2, New York nothing,
- 41:15last half of the second. Tracy walked the first
- 41:19man up, John Orsino. Willie Kirkland singled
- 41:23a center with a sinker off the end of the bat.
- 41:27Now the pitcher on the way. Leiter on the outside
- 41:29corner of strike. Last year, Jackie hit .248
- 41:47as the bird's center fielder. Ground ball left
- 41:50to shortstop. Moran to Fomwell. There's one on
- 41:53the first. Double play on the side is out. Baltimore,
- 42:00two runs on three hits, no errors, and one left
- 42:03in the last of the second. Now at the end of
- 42:05two innings, the score of the Orioles 2 and the
- 42:07New York Mets, nothing. Well, for those of you
- 42:12who are making your ticket plans now, not only
- 42:14for opening day, but all the home games of the
- 42:16New York Mets and beautiful new Shea Stadium,

- 42:51too, you may order your tickets by mail. Simply

- 42:56The New York Mets, Shea Stadium, Flushing, New
- 42:58York. We'll be waiting for you on Friday for
- 43:02the opener of the beautiful stadium. Right here
- 43:06we go along to the third inning with Steve Barber
- 43:08pitching for the Orioles against the New York
- 43:10Mets. And all set now to follow the action for
- 43:13you, Ralph Kainer. Thank you, Bob. And once again,
- 43:16hello, everybody. Steve Barber going for the
- 43:18Orioles has worked through two innings. He has
- 43:20given up no runs, allowed two hits, struck out
- 43:23two, and walked none. Steve will pitch against
- 43:25here in the top of the third. The pitcher, Tracy
- 43:31Stallard. who is scheduled up, but we'll have
- 43:33a pinch hitter for him, and then Dick Smith and
- 43:36Rod Knievel, assigned to be Larry Elliott, pinch
- 43:40hitting for Tracy Stollard. That'll mean that
- 43:48Jack Fisher, who has been warming up, will come
- 43:50in the ballgame to pitch in the bottom half of
- 43:53the third. Stollard going out, giving up two
- 43:56runs and four hits, striking out two and walking
- 43:58one. First pitch to Larry Elliott, a left -hand
- 44:01batter, is taken low, ball one. Larry started
- 44:04the season as more or less a player on the Buffalo
- 44:10roster. He has more or less earned himself a
- 44:12job in the regular roster in center field. Next
- 44:16pitch back to the plate, a fastball in the outside
- 44:17corner. Got one ball, one strike. Larry has been
- 44:23used in center field against right -hand pitching
- 44:26throughout the latter part of spring training.
- 44:30He makes his home in San Diego, California. And
- 44:35now Steve Barber into the windup and back again,
- 44:38and he moves Elliott away from the plate and
- 44:39on down to the ground with a fastball inside.
- 44:42So they count two balls, one strike. Barber wearing
- 44:51number 13 in his uniform, one of the few pitchers
- 44:54in baseball to do so, and that is the number
- 44:56of losses he had last year. And his pitch came
- 44:58back, and it was hit slowly on a check swing
- 45:01down the third. Robinson picks it up, flips quickly
- 45:03to first base for the out. One man out here in
- 45:06the top of the third. Score is 2 -0 in favor
- 45:09of the Baltimore Orioles, and the batter will
- 45:12be Dick Smith. Dick's the leadoff batter for
- 45:16the Mets. Up for the second time. His first time
- 45:18up, he bounced back to the mound on the very
- 45:20first pitch of the ballgame. Smith, the right
- 45:27-hand batter, playing at first base. And now
- 45:33the left -hander to work against Smith with a
- 45:35breaking pitch, a fast slider that's in on the
- 45:37inside corner, strike one. Barber is scheduled
- 45:43to go against the New York Yankees when they
- 45:45open the season against the Baltimore Oil in
- 45:48New York. Next pitch back is a fastball moving
- 45:53outside. One ball, one strike. That game will
- 46:00be in Baltimore. Orioles open the season against
- 46:07the White Sox in Chicago. Now the 1 -1 pitch.
- 46:12Foul down the right field line. No chance for
- 46:14a play. It goes as a long strike. Mets, of course,
- 46:17open their season against the Philadelphia Phillies
- 46:20the 14th on Tuesday night. They play on Wednesday
- 46:22night also. Open at home on Friday afternoon
- 46:26at Chase Idiom. All of us very interested to
- 46:36hear how the stadium is coming along as quite
- 46:38a few of the people came down from New York for
- 46:40this game, and the reports are great. It's back
- 46:43as low. Two balls, two strikes. Flying field
- 46:52condition, supposedly in perfect shape, and that's
- 46:57understandable as the Mets have the top groundskeeper
- 46:59in baseball. Johnny McCarthy doing a good job
- 47:06there again. Barber comes back and bounces the
- 47:09pitch in the dirt. It bounces over the shoulder
- 47:11of the catcher Johnny Orsino. And the count fills
- 47:14to three and two. Conference at the mound by
- 47:25Steve Barber and Johnny Orsino. Orsino, if you
- 47:29remember, had something happen to him last year
- 47:31that should happen to every hitter. He had five
- 47:33consecutive home runs in spring training. It
- 47:37didn't come all in one game, but he still had
- 47:39five in a row. That's something that's rather
- 47:41unusual, to say the least. This spring, he hasn't
- 47:49been quite that fortunate. Now 3 -2, it's Barber
- 47:52back again, and he misses outside ball four.
- 47:55So Steve walks his first man here in the top
- 47:57of the third. Orioles lead 2 -0, one out. That'll
- 48:01bring up Rod Kinneal, who bounced to second base
- 48:03his first time up. Rod playing in center field,
- 48:06batting from the right -hand side. Rod has been
- 48:17used in the outfield also at second and third
- 48:20base this spring. He's been filling the same
- 48:23role he filled last year as utility ball player.
- 48:28And his first pitch is hit off the handle and
- 48:30foul into the stands along the right field side.
- 48:33Strike one. Norm Sebring coming over to talk
- 48:40to Steve Barber at the mound now. Norm has sort
- 48:48of followed Hank Bauer, the manager of the Baltimore
- 48:50Orioles, around. He went from the Yankees' whip
- 48:52bar to Kansas City on a trade. And when Bauer
- 48:55moved from Kansas City to the Orioles as a coach
- 48:57and then later on became manager, he got Seaburn
- 49:00right over with him. One strike down to Rod Keneal.
- 49:06The score, 2 -0 Orioles lead with one out in
- 49:08the top of the third. Runner at first base and
- 49:10the pitch is swung on. A slider, a hard swing
- 49:13by Rod Keneal. He didn't get it. Strike two.
- 49:17Barber has a very, very good slider and a very
- 49:20good fastball. The fastball sinks and moves away
- 49:22from a right -hand batter. The slider, of course,
- 49:26moving right into the hand. He likes to work
- 49:27the slider inside. The fastball outside, the
- 49:29right -hander. Now two strikes. He comes in again
- 49:35with the slider, down low around the knees, and
- 49:37Keneal strikes out. That is the third strikeout
- 49:41for Steve Barber. He now has two out here in
- 49:43the third. And it brings up Ron Hunt, who doubled
- 49:46down the right field line his first time up.
- 49:49Ron and Joe Christopher with the two hits in
- 49:52the ballgame by the Mets. Ron has been playing
- 50:00at third base in the last few ballgames, and
- 50:02he's been doing better there all the time. He
- 50:04played there his first year in ball and has played
- 50:06there before. And he has shown a very good arm
- 50:10throwing from third, and he also has shown a
- 50:13very good like for the position. He's been very
- 50:16impressive at the plate this spring. First pitch
- 50:20to him is high, a fastball. One ball, no strike.
- 50:28One thing about Ron, at third base, he might
- 50:30live a little longer. At second base, he gets
- 50:32hit quite often on double plays because he just
- 50:34likes to stay in there. Now the 1 -0 delivery
- 50:41with the runner going is taken inside. The throw
- 50:44down to second, not in time, and a stolen base
- 50:46for Dick Smith, and he stole it all away. It
- 50:49wasn't even close. Mitch was inside. Osino had
- 50:52to move to his left, and by the time he came
- 50:54out throwing, it was no contest. So the Mets
- 50:58now have their second runner at second base with
- 50:59two out here in the top of the third, and the
- 51:02count on Ron Hunt is 2 -0. big man Smith can
- 51:12fly down the line. Hunt stepping out of the batter's
- 51:18box. Time called by home plate umpire Lou DeNiro.
- 51:27Now time is in. Barber back to work in the pitch.
- 51:31Bounce foul. Flatter in tight. Bounce down in
- 51:34the dirt. Count now two balls and one strike.
- 51:42Final game of the spring for the Mets. Their
- 51:4728th of the spring training season. It's been
- 51:52a good spring. The Mets were not rained out once.
- 51:54In fact, they never did have a bad day. Two balls,
- 51:59one strike. The pitch by Barber back to Hunt.
- 52:01Haken high and outside. Ball three. So Ron has
- 52:05the count in his favor. Three balls and one strike
- 52:07with Jim Hickman on deck. Hasn't been a good
- 52:13spring for the Mets as far as injuries. They've
- 52:15had three players receive broken bones, Al Jackson,
- 52:18Juju Coleman, and Carl Willey. Then they've had
- 52:21injuries to Altman, Hickman, Thomas, and Powell.
- 52:25Next pitch is low and inside ball four, and Barber
- 52:28walks his second man. Dick Smith on at second
- 52:32base as a result of a walk in a stolen base,
- 52:35and now Ron Hunt at first. Bob Murphy just informed
- 52:47me one other player the Mets had had a broken
- 52:49bone, and that's right. Craig Anderson had his
- 52:51hand broken. So they've had four players that
- 52:53came up with broken bones this spring. That's
- 52:56way over par. Runners now at first and second
- 52:59with two out and Jim Hickman in. Jim struck out
- 53:04swinging his first time up, and he hits the first
- 53:06pitch right back to the mound. A comebacker on
- 53:08one hop to throw to first base, and that does
- 53:10it. For the Mets, no runs. There were no hits.
- 53:15No errors. Two walks, two men left on base. And
- 53:18the score at the end of two and a half innings.
- 53:20The Orioles two to match nothing. Well, it's
- 53:24almost over as far as spring training is concerned,
- 53:27and it's been quite a spring, as we mentioned
- 53:29before. And spring training has become quite
- 53:32a tradition. In fact, it goes all the way back
- 53:35to 1884 when the Boston Nationals limbered up
- 53:37with a few games in New Orleans. And to a fan,
- 53:40why, beer is a baseball tradition, too. Yes,
- 53:44sir? There's no better way to enjoy a ball game
- 53:47than with a cool, refreshing glass of beer. And
- 53:49there's no better beer to have than Rheingold
- 53:52Extra Dry. Rheingold is as good to your taste
- 53:55as it is to your thirst because it's brewed extra
- 53:58dry. Brewed very specially with a smooth, crisp
- 54:01liveliness that, well, it just can't be matched.
- 54:05That's why when you enjoy the ball game with
- 54:07a refreshing Rheingold Extra Dry, you're sharing
- 54:10a great tradition with the millions along the
- 54:12Rheingold B2K. Rheingold is as good to your taste
- 54:15as it is to your thirst. Rheingold after Rheingold.
- 54:20New pitcher in the ballgame for the Mets, Jack
- 54:22Fisher, now replacing Tracy Stallard. Stallard
- 54:25worked the first two innings in his tune -up
- 54:27for the Major League opener. Not necessarily
- 54:30the first game of the season. It's scheduled
- 54:32to be Al Jackson to be the first pitcher against
- 54:34the Phillies, but this will be the last chance
- 54:36Tracy will have to work until he starts in the
- 54:39official 1964 season. He went two hands, gave
- 54:43up two runs, allowed four hits, struck out two
- 54:45and walked one. Now Jack Fisher, right -hander,
- 54:49formerly with the Baltimore Orioles. Jack has
- 54:52had a good spring, and he'll be working to Louie
- 54:54Aparicio, John Powell, and Norm Seaborn here
- 54:56in the third. And Fisher's first pitch, a slider
- 54:59outside ball one. Louie had a base hit to left
- 55:02field his first time up, hitting a slider on
- 55:05the line to left. Fisher, right -hander, back
- 55:15to Aparicio, and there's one popped up in foul
- 55:17territory on the first base side. Mitch is running
- 55:20down after it, and he can't get through it. He
- 55:23was fighting the front all the way and had trouble
- 55:24finding the ball in spite of the fact that he
- 55:26had his glasses down. Pretty tough chance for
- 55:30first baseman Dick Smith. No error on the play.
- 55:34And Aparicio now with a count of one ball and
- 55:37one strike. Fisher acquired from San Francisco.
- 55:54Basically a breaking ball pitcher. He likes to
- 55:56work the spot. Not exceptionally fast. Uses a
- 56:00slider quite often. Also throws the slip pitch.
- 56:03Now he sets and the 1 -1 pitch is the slip pitch.
- 56:06It's low on the dirt. Two balls, one strike.
- 56:12The Orioles with two runs in the second inning.
- 56:15A walk to John Orsino. A single by Willie Kirkland,
- 56:18a single by Brooks Robinson to drive and a run,
- 56:20and a single by Jerry Adair to drive and a run,
- 56:23leading the ball game 2 -0. Fisher back again,
- 56:31and a check on the swing in time by Aparicio,
- 56:34and the count goes to three balls and one strike.
- 56:37Lurie checking with Billy Hunter, the third base
- 56:39coach, as to whether or not he'll be hitting
- 56:41the wave. Coaching at first base, Sherm Lawler.
- 56:47Now 3 -1. The pitch is swung on. A slider and
- 56:50miss. Full count now as Louie Aparicio leads
- 56:54off here in the third. Pitcher into the windup
- 57:05and here's the pitch. And a check swing foul
- 57:08ball. Ball going over the top of the roof and
- 57:10out of play. Aparicio tried to hold off that
- 57:12ball. It was out of the strike zone. Couldn't
- 57:14keep the bat off the ball and he gets... They
- 57:17count to remain at 3 -2. Louie last year led
- 57:23the American League in total bases with 40. That's
- 57:27at him with Maury Wills for the Major League
- 57:29League. Now again at 3 -2. And the pitch is bounced
- 57:35in the hole, dug out by Ron Hunt. He goes across
- 57:37with a good throw. Out number one. That'll bring
- 57:44up... John Boog Powell, big, strong left fielder.
- 57:51And this part's got to be built to order for
- 57:53him. It's 315 down the right field line, 365
- 57:55in center field. He looks like a very menacing
- 58:00batter in the batter's box with that big size.
- 58:02He weighs about 230. Struck out swinging his
- 58:06first time up. Tracy Stallard got him on a fastball,
- 58:09and he takes the fastball high, ball one. Tracy
- 58:17had two strikeouts in the first inning, hitting
- 58:20Jackie Brandt and John Powell. But now Jack Fisher
- 58:24has replaced him, and there's a ball hit softly
- 58:26down the short right off the handle. Picked up
- 58:28by Al Moran, and the throw to first base to Dick
- 58:30Smith brings about out number two. Powell is
- 58:33jammed with a flyer right on the fifth. So with
- 58:37two down, Norm Seaborn will give it a try. Norm
- 58:40fouled out his first time. Up he is 0 for 1,
- 58:42left -hand batting first baseman. Don't forget
- 58:52to visit Langlois' little old New York at the
- 58:54World's Fair opening April 22nd. Enjoy this authentic
- 58:57corner of New York City as it was back in 1904.
- 59:01First pitch to the first baseman is fouled down
- 59:04in the dirt. Strike one. Jack Fisher with a slider
- 59:07in tight, right on the hands of the left -hand
- 59:10batter. Now Fisher into the lineup and back again.
- 59:18And he misses low with a slip pitch. Change of
- 59:21pace. One ball, one strike. Well, Casey did it
- 59:28again last night. He was on, and he was really
- 59:30on. Now the 1 -1 pitch. A swing and a change
- 59:34of pace. A good slip pitch. Strike two. Casey
- 59:37said no speeches now as he went to a banquet
- 59:40that was staged by the Portsmouth Ball Club here.
- 59:43Then he got up and talked for about 29 minutes,
- 59:46and he had everybody in the aisle. The 1 -2 pitch
- 59:54to Seaburn has taken high ball, too. He was really
- 59:57putting it on for his former teammate and very
- 1:00:00close friend, Al Lopez, who was there, the manager
- 1:00:03of the Chicago White Sox, also Tony Cuccinella,
- 1:00:06who coaches for the White Sox, and also a player
- 1:00:09who had played for him. And he was funny. Now
- 1:00:142 -2. The pitchers had fouled on the line. That
- 1:00:20holds with two balls and two strikes with two
- 1:00:22outs in the bottom half of the third. The Orioles
- 1:00:25lead 2 -0. Time. call for a moment as Seaburn
- 1:00:41backed out of the batter's box. Now time is in,
- 1:00:43and Fisher comes back to the plate. And it gets
- 1:00:46him looking on the inside corner with a slider.
- 1:00:48First strikeout for Jack Fisher, and that retires
- 1:00:51the side. No runs, no hits. No errors. No one
- 1:00:55left on base, and the score at the end of three,
- 1:00:58the Orioles two, the Mets nothing. Well, I don't
- 1:01:02want to tell you this, but I guess I should.
- 1:01:04It's only four more days left to... April 15th,
- 1:01:07and you know what that means. That's income tax
- 1:01:09return time. One of ours showed, while he came
- 1:01:14across a news story that really might amuse you,
- 1:01:16talking about it before, but you might not have
- 1:01:18heard it. It seems that there was a sheep rancher
- 1:01:20who recently listed his nine -year -old monkey
- 1:01:22as a tax deduction. And this monkey herds sheep
- 1:01:26and actually drives a tractor. Since a rancher
- 1:01:29provides free room and board for the monkey,
- 1:01:31the government allowed a tax deduction. but it
- 1:01:34didn't happen here in the United States. It happened
- 1:01:36in Australia, so I don't think you can get away
- 1:01:39with it. Don't be jealous, though, because there's
- 1:01:42plenty of benefits right here along the Rheingold
- 1:01:43Beach, like the new tax cuts, the Mets, the World's
- 1:01:47Fair, and the best of beers. That's Rheingold
- 1:01:50Extra Dry. Rheingold is as good to your taste
- 1:01:53as it is to your thirst because it's brewed extra
- 1:01:56dry, smooth and crisp, and completely quenching.
- 1:02:00Yes, it's the wide world, and you won't find
- 1:02:02a better beer. Rheingold is as good to your taste
- 1:02:05as it is to your thirst. Rheingold after Rheingold.
- 1:02:10You got your tax on made out, Mr. Murphy? I didn't
- 1:02:14have any problem making it out, Ralph. The problem
- 1:02:15was getting the money to pay him with. It sort
- 1:02:18of does create some sort of a problem every now
- 1:02:20and then, doesn't it? I haven't even finished
- 1:02:22mine. I'm going to spend all day Monday on it.
- 1:02:27Now we're all set to go here in the top of the
- 1:02:29fourth. As Steve Barber continues to work on
- 1:02:32the mound, the first pitch is a strike call.
- 1:02:35Bob Taylor the batter and Taylor taking as a
- 1:02:39curveball broke over at the knee. Bob bounced
- 1:02:41the third his first time up. He'll be followed
- 1:02:43by Joe Christopher and Sammy Samwell. Score 2
- 1:02:47-0 Baltimore. And the next pitch back is hit
- 1:02:51to deep right field. Moving back. Waiting now
- 1:02:54is the right fielder, Willie Kirkman, and he
- 1:02:56makes the catch. And while we wait for the next
- 1:02:57batter to come to that, we'll pause for station
- 1:02:59identification. This is the New York Mets Baseball
- 1:03:02Network. You're listening to WGY and WGFM, your
- 1:03:08New York Mets stations connected. along with
- 1:03:18Bob Murphy and Lindsey Nelson from Portsmouth,
- 1:03:21Virginia. The Mets playing their last game of
- 1:03:23the season, the spring training season. And now
- 1:03:26with one man out here in the fourth as the Mets
- 1:03:28trail 2 -0, the batter will be Joe Christopher.
- 1:03:30Joe has one of the two hits off Steve Barber.
- 1:03:35He's single to right field, a right -hand batter.
- 1:03:37There's one in the center field, a ball hanging
- 1:03:39up in the air, coming strong as brand. He can't
- 1:03:41get to it. It bounces off his glove. Christopher
- 1:03:43holds his first base, and the throw comes in,
- 1:03:45gets away from the second baseman. But no error
- 1:03:49on the play as Christopher saves it first. A
- 1:03:51looping line drive into center field, and Jackie
- 1:03:55Brandt tried to shoestring it, and the ball hit
- 1:03:57right in front of his glove and bounced off the
- 1:03:59top of it, but held close enough so Brandt could
- 1:04:02make the play back in. A base hit for Joe Christopher,
- 1:04:04his second in the ballgame, the third by the
- 1:04:06Mets off Steve Barber, and it will bring up Sammy
- 1:04:09Samwell. Sammy hit a hard ground ball down the
- 1:04:13first and was retired in a good play by Norm
- 1:04:15Siebern his first time up. Right -hand batter
- 1:04:22playing at second base, and the first pitch is
- 1:04:24taken outside, a fastball. One ball, no strike.
- 1:04:31Larry Bernice warming up in the bullpen for the
- 1:04:33Mets. Casey, on the bench today, said there's
- 1:04:38a good chance that Bernice might become a starting
- 1:04:40pitcher. And the next pitch set is thrown to
- 1:04:44Zamora's foul out of play. One ball, one strike.
- 1:04:49He said it was some reservation, though, because
- 1:04:51he said, now what happens if he starts in the
- 1:04:53ballgame and I need somebody to come in to relieve
- 1:04:55him that I got nobody to go to? That means that
- 1:04:58he likes Bernard as his number one relief pitcher,
- 1:05:00too. 2 -0 game, Baltimore. Here's the pitch to
- 1:05:07Sam Wallace. Bounce back through the mound. Backhanded
- 1:05:10by Adair. He goes over to the bag. Then throws
- 1:05:12the first base and... The play at first base
- 1:05:15is in time. Also, Adair did step on at second
- 1:05:18base, so it's a double play. We hesitated on
- 1:05:21the play at second base because it didn't appear
- 1:05:24as though Adair got to the bag. The umpire gave
- 1:05:27a late call, and then the throw to first base
- 1:05:29was not in time, and Samwell is now safe at first.
- 1:05:33So they get the fourth play and a good play by
- 1:05:35Adair at second base as he backhanded that ball
- 1:05:37right near the bag in back of it, and the throw
- 1:05:39to first base was not in time. Two men out, the
- 1:05:46batter now is Al Moran. Say, now's a good time
- 1:05:49to light up a cool Thriller King. Get the most
- 1:05:51refreshing coolness in cigarette smoking today.
- 1:06:01First pitch to Moran is low for Paul Watson.
- 1:06:13Next pitch back is Luke in the center field.
- 1:06:15Brad is moving to his left, and he makes the
- 1:06:17catch to retire to side. In the inning for the
- 1:06:21Mets, no runs. They had one hit. Oils made no
- 1:06:24errors. One man was left on base. The score at
- 1:06:27the end of three and a half. The Mets trail by
- 1:06:33a two -nothing score. The Oils out in front.
- 1:06:36Let's listen while a baseball fan learns about
- 1:06:38a cigarette that makes a hit every time. Another
- 1:06:45pop -up. We haven't had a hit all day. Here.
- 1:06:48Let this cigarette know it was me. What's the
- 1:06:51matter? Oh, lost their taste lately. Well, here,
- 1:06:54Joe. Have a cool. Cool? I think you'll like them.
- 1:07:02See what I mean? Yeah. Not bad. Not bad at all.
- 1:07:08Your cigarette's not tasting good. For the most
- 1:07:34refreshing coolness you can get in any cigarette,
- 1:07:38smoke cool with the Pure White Filter. It's the
- 1:07:47bottom half of the fourth with the Orioles in
- 1:07:49front 2 -0 as they come to bat against Jack Fisher.
- 1:07:52Fisher is in the game in the third, and he fits
- 1:07:55perfect ball to his first three batters. He'll
- 1:07:58now work to John Orsino, Willie Kirkland, and
- 1:08:00then Brooks Robinson. Orsino, the catcher in
- 1:08:03the ballgame, walks his first time up and scored
- 1:08:05the first run. He's a right -hand batter. And
- 1:08:09the first pitch to Orsino is looped into right
- 1:08:11center field off of the handle, a broken bat.
- 1:08:13It drops in for a base hit, and Sam Wild couldn't
- 1:08:15get back to it. The Orsino with a broken bat
- 1:08:18base hit. The first hit given up by Fisher, and
- 1:08:21the Orioles now have a runner at first base with
- 1:08:23no one out. The Orioles scored their two runs.
- 1:08:28They had four men up without an out against Tracy
- 1:08:31Schaller. Tracy worked the first two innings,
- 1:08:33gave up the two runs. Now the batter is Willie
- 1:08:36Kirkland, left -hand batting right fielder. He
- 1:08:38singled the center field his first time up. And
- 1:08:45the first pitch is lined down the line. It is
- 1:08:47a foul ball. Ball fouled by about a foot. Right
- 1:08:51over the top of the first baseman's head and
- 1:08:53curving into foul territory. That ball was well
- 1:08:55hit. Orioles now have a total of five base hits
- 1:09:03off the combined pitching of Tracy Saladin and
- 1:09:05Jack Fisher. Willie Kirkland back. In the batter's
- 1:09:15box. He started his career with the Giants. And
- 1:09:21now the next pitch is a fastball. It's high.
- 1:09:25One ball, one strike. For the Mets, they have
- 1:09:28Dick Smith at first base, Sammy Samwell at second,
- 1:09:31Al Moran at short, and Ron Hunt at third base.
- 1:09:36This could be their starting infield on opening
- 1:09:38night, Tuesday night against Philadelphia. Next
- 1:09:42pitch back by Fisher, a changeup. It's outside
- 1:09:45ball two. In the outfield, it's Jim Hickman in
- 1:09:48left field, Rod Camille in center field, and
- 1:09:51Joe Christopher in right. George Altman was not
- 1:09:54even brought up to the ballpark. He has an injured
- 1:09:58muscle in his shoulder, and he has remained back
- 1:10:00at the hotel to get heat treatment in order to
- 1:10:03get him ready for opening day. Pitch back is
- 1:10:07his foul. Ball going out of play. Count now,
- 1:10:11one ball, two strikes. As we mentioned earlier,
- 1:10:14the Mets have had a real tough spring in the
- 1:10:17casualty department. Altman has an injured shoulder.
- 1:10:20Hickman was out for a while with a sprained ankle.
- 1:10:23Thomas is out at the moment with a bad arm, and
- 1:10:26Grover Powell was sent to the minors because
- 1:10:28of an arm, and they want him to throw as much
- 1:10:30as he can, and they hope to get him back. Now
- 1:10:36Fisher sets and is picked back to Kirkland. Bounce
- 1:10:38back to the mound. A chance for two. The throw
- 1:10:40to the shortstop at second base is in time. The
- 1:10:42throw to first base is in the dirt. It's backhanded
- 1:10:45and dug up by Smith. So the Mets have turned
- 1:10:47in their second double play. And that one, the
- 1:10:49quick one, 1 -6 -3 is destroyed. And now with
- 1:10:54two out, the batter will be Brooks Robinson.
- 1:11:04Brooks singled the left fielder his first time
- 1:11:05up and drove in the first run of the ballgame.
- 1:11:07The Orioles lead 2 -0 with two out here in the
- 1:11:10bottom half of the fourth. And the first pitch
- 1:11:13to the right -hand batter is inside. A fastball.
- 1:11:16Robinson takes the pitch inside by about four
- 1:11:18inches. At 1 -0, the right -hander comes back
- 1:11:29with a changeup inside. Ball two. Two balls,
- 1:11:31no strike. Hawk Taylor, the catcher for the Mets.
- 1:11:40With a slight argument on that last call by Lou
- 1:11:43DeMiro. American League umpire. Now it's Fisher
- 1:11:49at 2 -0. And he misses for ball three. Three
- 1:11:53balls, no strikes. Beyond egg batter is Jerry
- 1:11:57Adair. 3 -0 pitch. A called strike, a fastball
- 1:12:07in the outside corner. Fisher back again, this
- 1:12:18time at 3 -1. And the pitch is fouled away, strike
- 1:12:22two. Fisher with a fastball actually had the
- 1:12:25ball by Brooks Robinson. So after falling behind
- 1:12:293 -0, the cat now is full of three balls and
- 1:12:31two strikes. Baltimore two, the Mets nothing.
- 1:12:38Two out, bottom half, the fourth. And the pitch,
- 1:12:41it off the hands into center field. Moving in
- 1:12:44is the center fielder, Rod Caneel. And he makes
- 1:12:47the catch every time at the side. No runs, one
- 1:12:50hit, the hit erased by the double play. No errors
- 1:12:53and no one left on base. And the score at the
- 1:12:56end of four, the Orioles two, the Mets nothing.
- 1:13:08On opening day next Friday when the New York
- 1:13:11Mets meet the Pittsburgh Pirates, nine members
- 1:13:16of the Hall of Fame will be on hand. The four
- 1:13:19new members of the Baseball Hall of Fame will
- 1:13:21be inducted in late July at Cooperstown, Red
- 1:13:23Faber and Burley Grimes, O 'Reason Payne, the
- 1:13:27great White Sox shortstop Luke Appling, and one
- 1:13:29of the great hitters of our time, Heine Mnuch.
- 1:13:32Also to be there at Shea Stadium on Friday will
- 1:13:35be the old Flash, Frankie Frisch, Zach Wheat
- 1:13:38and Max Carey, King Carl Hubble, and Bill Terry.
- 1:13:42400 hitters, a real oddity in the history of
- 1:13:45baseball, and of course one of the great ones,
- 1:13:47Hall of Famer Bill Terry. So we'll all be looking
- 1:13:50forward to seeing all nine of them on opening
- 1:13:52day next Friday at Chase Stadium. Now Jack Fisher
- 1:14:10is due to lead off in the fifth inning, but Jack
- 1:14:12has worked his two innings since. Johnny Stevenson
- 1:14:15is coming out to hit for him. This is the final
- 1:14:21exhibition ballgame in case he wants to give
- 1:14:23the pitchers that will be going early in the
- 1:14:25National League finish line for the Mets a final
- 1:14:28tune -up. So here is young Johnny Stevenson who's
- 1:14:32had less than one full year of baseball on his
- 1:14:34way north with the New York Mets. Pitch is over
- 1:14:38for a call strike. He's quite a handyman. He's
- 1:14:40a catcher by trade. But when he got hurt last
- 1:14:43year when he broke a finger, then he went to
- 1:14:45the outfielder. He developed into quite a defensive
- 1:14:47outfielder, and now the Mets are working him
- 1:14:48out at third base. The left -hand hitter swings,
- 1:14:51and Mets are strength, too. Casey and the coaches
- 1:14:57have really liked what they have seen of young
- 1:14:59John Stevenson. Last year, his first year in
- 1:15:04baseball, and actually only a half year, he was
- 1:15:06at Auburn where he hit .261. A foul ball, it
- 1:15:10wafted back upstairs and out of play. But actually,
- 1:15:13Johnny Stephenson, I should say, beg your pardon,
- 1:15:16was hitting .342 when he suffered the broken
- 1:15:18finger behind the bat. In order to help the ball
- 1:15:21club, as soon as he could with his hand on his
- 1:15:23flinter, he went to the outfield. He attended
- 1:15:28William Carey College in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.
- 1:15:35Stevenson, 5 '11", weighs 180, bats out of an
- 1:15:39open stance, looks it over, and the fastball
- 1:15:41by Barber is low, one ball and two strikes. Last
- 1:15:47winter, he worked as an assistant basketball
- 1:15:49coach at William Carey College. Pitched by Barber,
- 1:15:54outside and low in the count, even, two balls
- 1:15:56and two strikes. So John Stevenson, starting
- 1:16:07his second, or rather actually his first full
- 1:16:10year in pro ball, his second year, is on his
- 1:16:13way north with the Mets. A ground ball lands
- 1:16:15on the right side of the diamond, fielded by
- 1:16:16Jerry Adair. Adair across to Norm Seaburn, one
- 1:16:19away in the fifth inning. One away and nobody
- 1:16:25on top of the fifth. Now the leadoff hitter,
- 1:16:28Dick Smith. Dick has drowned it out, drawn a
- 1:16:31walk, and stolen a base. Dick right -hand hitter
- 1:16:45with fine running speed has been used throughout
- 1:16:48the spring against the left -handers. Originally
- 1:16:51an outfielder, now being plated first. Round
- 1:16:53ball bounced to short. Up with his Louis Aparicio.
- 1:16:56He strides and throws two men down. Barber has
- 1:17:02that good sinking fastball working for him, and
- 1:17:05the Mets are hitting the ball on the ground.
- 1:17:09He turns that sinker over, and it sinks so much
- 1:17:11that when you see it from up in the stands, it
- 1:17:13looks more like a curveball than a fastball.
- 1:17:16Rod can heal the hitter. Rod has drowned it out
- 1:17:18and struck out. Rod is 0 for 2. Inside at the
- 1:17:25knees. One ball and no strike. Larry Bernard
- 1:17:33warming up down on the sidelines. Larry comes
- 1:17:35in to pitch. The last of the first inning. Swing
- 1:17:40and a miss. Farber took something off on that
- 1:17:42one. One ball and one strike. With Carl Willey
- 1:17:47sidelined with a fractured jaw, it puts Casey
- 1:17:49in quite a dilemma as to whether to leave Larry
- 1:17:51Banas in the bullpen or make a starter out of
- 1:17:54him. Larry is the number one release pitcher
- 1:17:57in how important they are. Pass ball over for
- 1:18:00a call strike. Still, you have to have four solid
- 1:18:03starters. Mets are hoping that Grover Powell's
- 1:18:08arm will respond and that he can join the ball
- 1:18:10club before too long. Casey does not want to
- 1:18:14have to open the season with only one left -hander.
- 1:18:16Low and outside. Count even now at 2 -2. The
- 1:18:24only other left -hander on the staff has now
- 1:18:26been sent to Buffalo. Actually, for a further
- 1:18:30assignment, he'll be working out with the Buffalo
- 1:18:32Club, a waiting assignment, and that's young
- 1:18:33Ron Locke. Locke is the designated player by
- 1:18:37the New York Mets. Now Barber with a 2 -2 delivery.
- 1:18:42Low inside, down around the shoot top, 3 -2.
- 1:18:53Johnny Stevenson, a first -year player, but he's
- 1:18:55coming north with the ball club. Now the pitch
- 1:18:59underway. Ground ball hit down to first baseline.
- 1:19:02Foul, no play. And so, too, is hard -throwing
- 1:19:05young right -hander Jerry Hensley. Although Jerry
- 1:19:08didn't get in a ball game as a pitcher last year,
- 1:19:10nonetheless, he was on the roster of the Kingston
- 1:19:13Barclays and the Pirates system. Three and two
- 1:19:22on hot rod, two outs, and nobody on top of the
- 1:19:25fifth inning. Barber the flamethrower from Tacoma
- 1:19:30Park winds and pitches. Lofted foul off to the
- 1:19:33right. No play. Count remains 3 -2. Steve Barber,
- 1:19:38one of the few pitchers in the history of this
- 1:19:40game to make the jump from Class D to the Major
- 1:19:42League. From a losing season in Class D, he jumped
- 1:19:48all the way to the American League and made his
- 1:19:50first year a winning year. He won 10 and lost
- 1:19:527. Now Barber over the head. Down comes the arm.
- 1:20:00And it's popped up towards short right field.
- 1:20:02Maybe tough to reach Kirkland going for it. So
- 1:20:04is Seaburn. And it's Seaburn who makes the catch
- 1:20:06and foul round to retire the side. Good play
- 1:20:09by Norm Seaburn. He had to take that one over
- 1:20:11his shoulder. Side retired. No runs, no hits,
- 1:20:14no errors, and none left on. Throw has come halfway
- 1:20:17at the end of four and a half to score here in
- 1:20:19Portsmouth. The Baltimore Orioles, too, and the
- 1:20:21New York Mets, nothing. Last of the fifth inning,
- 1:20:30Larry Benares now moves out for his two -inning
- 1:20:32spin. Jack Fisher, in two innings, allowed no
- 1:20:36runs, gave up one hit, walked none, struck out
- 1:20:38one. Jerry Adair, or Casper the Friendly Ghost,
- 1:20:42as his teammates call him, will be leading off
- 1:20:44in the last half of the fifth inning. It'll be
- 1:20:46Jerry Adair, Steve Barber, and then the top of
- 1:20:48the batting order for Jack Brandt. Well, it's
- 1:20:52a tremendous day here in the Norfolk -Portsmouth
- 1:20:55area. You couldn't ask for a more beautiful day
- 1:20:57for this time of the year. And the baseball fans
- 1:21:00of the area certainly are turning out in wonderful
- 1:21:02numbers for today's exhibition game. The ballpark
- 1:21:05is jammed. The only vacant seats are out in the
- 1:21:09center field bleachers. The grandstand proper
- 1:21:10itself is a complete sellout. One ball and no
- 1:21:14strikes on Jerry Adair. Now, but not into his
- 1:21:19windup. Here's the pitch. Final tip. One ball,
- 1:21:23one strike. Larry has a real good sinker, which
- 1:21:26makes him a fine relief pitcher. This year, he
- 1:21:30has added to his repertoire a slider that he
- 1:21:32now has confidence in, and it's become a very
- 1:21:34important pitch to him. So picking up the extra
- 1:21:37pitch should help him even that much more. Good
- 1:21:39slider on the outside corner, one ball and two
- 1:21:42strikes. Larry, a very intelligent young man,
- 1:21:48and he takes coaching extremely well. The one
- 1:21:53-two delivery reached for and fouled back of
- 1:21:56stairs and out of play. Last year, starting his
- 1:21:59first full year in pro ball, he made the Mets,
- 1:22:01came north, and was with them all year long.
- 1:22:04The early part of spring training, Roger Craig,
- 1:22:06a real veteran with one of the great pickoff
- 1:22:08moves in baseball, worked with Larry Banas showing
- 1:22:10him how to hold a runner and how to try to pick
- 1:22:12a runner off, and Banas picked it up in a hurry.
- 1:22:16Line drive hits the right. This will be a base
- 1:22:18hit. Racing toward the line, Joe Christopher,
- 1:22:20and Adair takes the turn and holds with a single
- 1:22:22to right field. He hit a curve ball. Hit the
- 1:22:25ball right where it was pitched and into right
- 1:22:27field. Now Barber coming up in the infield now
- 1:22:32will be looking for the bunt. The birds two and
- 1:22:35the Mets nothing, bottom half of the fifth inning.
- 1:22:43Now Ron Hunt comes in close at third. Dick Smith
- 1:22:46holding against the runner Jerry Adair. Adair
- 1:22:48runs very well. He was a real backcourt star
- 1:22:53during his college days. for Henry Iver, the
- 1:22:55man who will be coaching the Olympic basketball
- 1:22:57squad for America. Butting down the first baseline,
- 1:23:01Smith up with it, throws to second. He's out
- 1:23:03at a close play at second base. Fast fielding
- 1:23:06by Dick Smith and a strong throw to Al Moran
- 1:23:08covering, and Adair has taken off the line. Now
- 1:23:24Russ Snyder is coming after it for Jackie Brant.
- 1:23:33Russ Snyder had a good year for the Orioles last
- 1:23:39season. A real speedster and one of the outstanding
- 1:23:42runners in the game today. Well, now take over
- 1:23:45the last half of the ball game in center field
- 1:23:47for Jackie Brant. Snyder, a left -hand hitter.
- 1:23:50Pitch is over at the knees for a call strike.
- 1:23:52His first year out in baseball in the Yankee
- 1:23:54farm system, playing in McAllister, Oklahoma.
- 1:23:57He hit something like 432. That's a bunch of
- 1:24:03hitting. Now the pitcher on the way, just off
- 1:24:07the outside corner. He likes to bunt down the
- 1:24:16third baseline. He tries to pin it close to the
- 1:24:18line. Probably four out of six times you'll bump
- 1:24:21the ball foul, but the two times it goes safe,
- 1:24:23there's nothing you can do. It's a base hit.
- 1:24:26Fly ball into the air to short left field. Coming
- 1:24:28in is Jim Hickman. Now Jim slows up and he puts
- 1:24:31it away for the out. You're a McAllister when
- 1:24:36he hit 432. It was no fluke. He went to bat 556
- 1:24:40times. He had 240 base hits. Last year, we were
- 1:24:48talking about that bunting. Last year, he beat
- 1:24:49out 16 bunts for base hits. By trying to catch
- 1:24:54a puff of smoke. Now, Louie Aparicio is the hitter.
- 1:24:58Two outs and one on. Barber is the base runner.
- 1:25:01Birds two, Mets nothing. Bottom half of inning
- 1:25:03number five. Larry Bernard pitching for the New
- 1:25:10York Mets. The blonde right -hander comes over
- 1:25:14the top of the fastball inside and high, one
- 1:25:16ball and no strike. Barbara and Larry Benares,
- 1:25:22during the winter, bought a new home out in Huntington.
- 1:25:26And during the off -season, Larry worked as a
- 1:25:28substitute school teacher in the Huntington system.
- 1:25:35Next pitcher on the way goes through a curve
- 1:25:38that bends too far away. Two balls and no strikes
- 1:25:41on little Louie. Aparicio, right -hand hitter,
- 1:25:51standing well back from the plate. Rod Caneel
- 1:25:54striding toward left center against him. Slider
- 1:25:57over for a strike, 2 -1. While the New York Mets
- 1:26:05will have tomorrow up and be spending the off
- 1:26:07day in New York, the Orioles have an exhibition
- 1:26:10game, their final exhibition game, against the
- 1:26:12Philadelphia Phillies in Philadelphia. A let
- 1:26:16-up hit on the ground down a third baseline foul.
- 1:26:21Change -up fouled off, 2 -2 to Aparicio. Tuesday
- 1:26:30night, opening night for the New York Mets in
- 1:26:32Philadelphia. The left -handers going, Dennis
- 1:26:34Bennett and Al Jackson. Dennis Bennett's younger
- 1:26:38brother was down at Clearwater in camp this year
- 1:26:40with the Philadelphia Phillies. They feel he
- 1:26:42has a chance to develop and perhaps make the
- 1:26:44Major League. Low outside, 3 -2. One of the most
- 1:26:51promising youngsters in the entire Philly camp
- 1:26:54was a pitcher by the name of Dwight Sutherland.
- 1:26:57The reason was about two weeks ago, Gene Mock
- 1:27:00was very seriously considering keeping him with
- 1:27:02the big ball club in order that he could be protected
- 1:27:04from the first -year player draft. Now the pitcher
- 1:27:07on the way, just off the outside corner, ball
- 1:27:10four. But the Phillies decided that since they
- 1:27:14are a pennant contender, they could ill afford
- 1:27:15to have too many players sitting around in the
- 1:27:18dugout. So they tried to get waivers on him,
- 1:27:21and Dwight Sutherland was claimed by the New
- 1:27:23York Mets. Runners on first and second, Barber
- 1:27:29moving over to second on the walk by Benarth.
- 1:27:31The hitter now is Boog Powell. Out of stretch,
- 1:27:38picked by Benarth. Gets away from Hawk Taylor,
- 1:27:40no advance. He recovers in a hurry. Inside and
- 1:27:43low, one ball and no strike. Last half of any
- 1:28:00number five 2 -0 ball game. Right after the game,
- 1:28:04the New York Mets will be packing up and flying
- 1:28:06to New York. Next pitch on the way, breaking
- 1:28:17ball down low 2 -0. It's been a long spring training
- 1:28:20for a number of people with the ball club. Several
- 1:28:24of the players you'll remember came down to the
- 1:28:26early camp. So they left after the first week
- 1:28:29of February. They've been gone about 67 days.
- 1:28:34People who are so important to the ball club
- 1:28:37like Herb Norman, the equipment manager and the
- 1:28:38trainer, just watch. A long drive, it beats the
- 1:28:42right field, but it's still being gone. A three
- 1:28:45-run homer for Goodfell. Home run this spring
- 1:29:01for John Boog Powell, the massive young left
- 1:29:04fielder of the Baltimore Orioles. He pulled that
- 1:29:07one and easily hit it over the right field fence.
- 1:29:11Five to nothing, birds in front. That brings
- 1:29:16up the spectacle's Norm Siebert. One swing of
- 1:29:22the bat by Boog Powell and three runs can end.
- 1:29:28Pitch is over for a call strike. Baltimore, five
- 1:29:39runs on seven hits. Now Banas with a full windup.
- 1:29:45In comes the pitch. Breaking the ball inside
- 1:29:47and low. One ball and one strike. A two -out,
- 1:29:51three -run homer. Next pitch on the way. That's
- 1:30:00over for a called strike. Steve Barber, the Oriole
- 1:30:06pitcher in today's game, is without a doubt one
- 1:30:08of the toughest pitchers in all of the major
- 1:30:11leagues to hit a home run. He rarely gives up
- 1:30:16many home runs in the course of a year. Strangely
- 1:30:18enough, if he gives up about 10 a year, it seems
- 1:30:20like Detroit gets about 8 out of the 10. 1 -2
- 1:30:26delivery, it's fast foul. Well, they say every
- 1:30:28pitcher has a voodoo club, a club he can just
- 1:30:30do nothing with. and every hitter has circumstances
- 1:30:33he has trouble with. Detroit's been a voodoo
- 1:30:35club for the Mets this year. Four broken bones,
- 1:30:40four different injuries for the Mets this year,
- 1:30:42and three against Detroit, three of the four.
- 1:30:47The 1 -2 delivery, hip foul high in the air,
- 1:30:50deep down the left field line, out of play. 2
- 1:30:59-2 Coleman, Craig Anderson. Carl Willey all hurt
- 1:31:04against Detroit. But now for the 1 -2 delivery,
- 1:31:10it's over, strength recall. Siebernitz called
- 1:31:12looking. Three runs, there were two hits. No
- 1:31:17errors, none left on. Now five innings complete.
- 1:31:22Baltimore, five runs, seven hits. They've had
- 1:31:24two left. For the New York Mets, no runs, three
- 1:31:28hits. They've had five left on. And on Friday,
- 1:31:32when the Mets open the beautiful new Shea Stadium,
- 1:31:34which seats 55 ,300, they'll be opening a seven
- 1:31:38-game homestand. Seven consecutive day games,
- 1:31:42the weekend series of Pittsburgh, the big opener
- 1:31:44Friday, the ladies' day game Saturday, and a
- 1:31:47Sunday afternoon game on the 19th of April. Then
- 1:31:50the Philadelphia Phillies come to New York and
- 1:31:52the Shea Stadium for a two -game series, both
- 1:31:54day games on Monday and Tuesday, the 20th and
- 1:31:5821st. After the Phillies leave town, Bob Kennedy
- 1:32:02and the Chicago Cubs come in. It'll be the first
- 1:32:04time we've seen them since they trained in Arizona.
- 1:32:06The Cubs will be in on Wednesday and Thursday,
- 1:32:09April 22nd and April 23rd. Tickets are on sale
- 1:32:13for the seven -game homestand at all the 81 home
- 1:32:15games of the New York Mets. At the ticket office
- 1:32:18at Shea Stadium, also Midtown Manhattan at Grand
- 1:32:22Central Station near the 42nd Vanderbilt Ramp,
- 1:32:25along on in the waiting room of the Penn Station,
- 1:32:27and in... Suffolk County at Macy's and the Walt
- 1:32:31Whitman Shopping Center in Huntington. Now for
- 1:32:38the Orioles, Sam Bowens is going to right field,
- 1:32:40and Dick Brown takes over behind the plate. Russ
- 1:32:45Snyder goes to center field. So those are the
- 1:32:47three changes for the Orioles. For those of you
- 1:32:50scoring along with us, Russ Snyder is in center
- 1:32:52field, Sam Bowens replaces Willie Kirkland in
- 1:32:54right field, and Dick Brown takes over behind
- 1:32:57the plate. Replacing John Orsino. Ron Hunt leading
- 1:33:14off against Barber in the sixth inning. Birds
- 1:33:16now with a 5 -0 lead after a three -run homer
- 1:33:19by John Powell. Ron doubled to right and has
- 1:33:22drawn a walk so far. Outside and high, one ball
- 1:33:26and no strike. Nobody warming up as yet. Hank
- 1:33:30Bauer planning to go at least seven innings with
- 1:33:32Steve Barber. Now Galen Sisco starts to warm
- 1:33:38up for the New York Mets. Foul pop -up behind
- 1:33:41the plate. Back comes Dick Brown. He hopes he
- 1:33:44has a play. Up against the screen. It's out of
- 1:33:46his reach. And just barely out of his reach.
- 1:33:56No workout tomorrow for the Mets. Casey giving
- 1:33:58the ball club the day off after some 65 days
- 1:34:01of a spring training grind. It'll give them a
- 1:34:02chance to get unpacked and send their laundry
- 1:34:05out. Fabby Durkin, our engineer, is heading north,
- 1:34:12but he's got this thing all beat because he sent
- 1:34:14his laundry out the day before we left. Of course,
- 1:34:17his laundry's still in Florida. Now the pitcher
- 1:34:19on the way, a ground ball banged towards short.
- 1:34:21Backhand play by Aparicio, the long peg not in
- 1:34:23time, and Hunt beats it out for a base hit. Throw
- 1:34:26around is two for two and a walk and three -fifths
- 1:34:29to the plate. Right here, we pause for station
- 1:34:32identification. This is the New York Mets baseball
- 1:34:35network. WGY -WGFN is connected. Weather time
- 1:34:39is eight minutes past seven, and the temperature
- 1:34:42is 49 degrees. Bob Murphy with Lindsey Nelson
- 1:34:49and Ralph Kanner. We're in the sixth inning here
- 1:34:51in Fort Smith. Baltimore 5 and New York nothing.
- 1:34:54Ron Hunt has just led off here in the sixth inning
- 1:34:56with a base hit to deep short. That is the fourth
- 1:35:00hit given up by Steve Barber. Ground ball slowly
- 1:35:05hit towards second. Adair charges in, flips the
- 1:35:07ball to second one. On to first, not in time,
- 1:35:10but what a flashy fielding play. Jerry Adair
- 1:35:13with a backhand flip got rid of the ball lightning
- 1:35:15fast to Aparicio. Louie came racing across the
- 1:35:18bank and flew on to Seaburn, but not in time
- 1:35:21to get Jim Hickman. Quite a play by Jerry Adair
- 1:35:26and Louie Aparicio. Now one out and one on, the
- 1:35:32batter is Bob Taylor. The Hawks have grounded
- 1:35:34out and fly to right, nothing for two. When he
- 1:35:42came out of high school, Milwaukee gave him one
- 1:35:44of the biggest bonuses ever offered to a youngster.
- 1:35:50He received over $100 ,000 to sign. He is a hard
- 1:35:55-working, very determined young athlete. The
- 1:36:011 -1 delivery bounced foul back towards the screen,
- 1:36:04no play. Marcus had his share of bad breaks and
- 1:36:08now figures that everything is straightening
- 1:36:09out for him. Last year in the spring, he broke
- 1:36:12his collarbone. Two years prior to that, he was
- 1:36:15on the service. And in the last three years,
- 1:36:18has played less than 60 ballgames. So he played
- 1:36:22this winter in Latin America and played every
- 1:36:24day and had a real good year. The 1 -1 pitch
- 1:36:29by Barber, taken under the knees, two balls and
- 1:36:31a strike. 2 -1 the count, the pitch thrown by
- 1:36:49Barber. Hit off the end of the bat, a foul ball.
- 1:36:52Steve Barber's story has not been unlike that
- 1:36:55of Bob Taylor. Barber also had a couple of stretches
- 1:36:58in the service. As a matter of fact, he pitched
- 1:37:02on weekends on leave from the Army the year before
- 1:37:04last. When he came out of the service, he had
- 1:37:07mononucleosis that weakened him and sent him
- 1:37:10to the sidelines and put him on the disabled
- 1:37:12list. And then bounced back to become a 20 -game
- 1:37:15winner last year. Pitching 2 -2. Foul ball, no
- 1:37:22play. Barber has always defied baseball superstition
- 1:37:30by wearing number 13. Nothing spectacularly new
- 1:37:36over the years, the number of ballplayers in
- 1:37:38the big leagues have worn 13. How many hotels
- 1:37:41have you ever been in that had a 13th floor?
- 1:37:472 -2 delivery. Foul ball back, no play. Count
- 1:37:59even now, two and two on Bob Taylor. One out
- 1:38:02and one on in the top of the sixth inning. Now,
- 1:38:11Bobber slowing himself up a little bit. Galen
- 1:38:13Frisco warming up for the New York Mets. Last
- 1:38:16exhibition ball game for New York in case he
- 1:38:18wants all the pitchers that will be working in
- 1:38:20that first week to get a little bit of tune -up.
- 1:38:26Now the pitcher on the way. A smash back through
- 1:38:29the box. The base hit for Bob Taylor. Jim Hickman
- 1:38:32turning his second. He'll hold there as Snyder
- 1:38:34plays the ball back in. So this is the first
- 1:38:37time that Barber has given up more than one hit
- 1:38:39in any inning. Mets now have runners on first
- 1:38:42and second, one out, and Joe Christopher coming
- 1:38:44up. Two for two. Must now have a total of five
- 1:38:54hits off Barber. Ron Hunt and Joe Christopher
- 1:38:56have picked up four of the five. Now the Orioles
- 1:39:14with the infield at double play depth straight
- 1:39:15away and the outfield just about straight away.
- 1:39:19And the enthusiasm from the top of the wagers
- 1:39:21now starts with a cry, let's go Mets. Here's
- 1:39:26the pitcher on the way. Sends it right in for
- 1:39:29a call strike one. For the Orioles, in all probability,
- 1:39:36at Comiskey Park in Chicago, Milt Pappas will
- 1:39:38pitch their opener, followed by Rob and Robert.
- 1:39:41Then the Orioles come back to Baltimore for the
- 1:39:43home opener, where they'll have Steve Barber
- 1:39:45going against the Yankees. Al Barber in the prep
- 1:39:57position delivers to Christopher and his pals
- 1:39:59back toward the press box, no play. Mentioning
- 1:40:04the press box, you can well imagine how happy
- 1:40:06the baseball writers following the message throughout
- 1:40:08spring training will be to get back home. They
- 1:40:10have been gone for over two months. Gus Mott
- 1:40:24and his assistant, Joe Deere, Herb Norman, the
- 1:40:26home equipment manager, and Nick Trauman, who
- 1:40:28will handle the visiting clubhouse, they've all
- 1:40:30been in spring training since the first day.
- 1:40:33Swing and a miss. Barber strikes out Joe Christopher.
- 1:40:38Two men down now in the sixth inning, and Sammy
- 1:40:40Samwell comes up. That is the fourth strikeout
- 1:40:48by Steve Barber. Brown -Well has drowned it out
- 1:40:53to first, reached on a fourth play, nothing for
- 1:40:55two. Sammy, a right -hand hitter. Now Barber
- 1:41:08with two outs and two on. Fires a swing and a
- 1:41:10miss on a letter -half fastball, strike one.
- 1:41:18Anytime Barber is around the plate, he's a tough
- 1:41:20pitcher to hit. Actually, while winning 20 last
- 1:41:24year, he gave up more hits per inning since than
- 1:41:26any previous year, and he says he's bound and
- 1:41:30determined this year not to give up as many hits
- 1:41:32as he did last year. It was the first year he'd
- 1:41:34ever given up very many hits. Final ball hit
- 1:41:37back toward the crowd and out of play. So it
- 1:41:38was a very successful year for him. Here's the
- 1:42:04pitcher on the way by Barbara. A slow roller
- 1:42:06hits his shortstop. Aparicio digs it out of the
- 1:42:08dirt. Throws to Adair in time to get the fourth
- 1:42:11play to erase the side. Tried to retire to the
- 1:42:14sixth. A miss threatened but failed to get a
- 1:42:16run home. No runs, two hits, no errors, two left.
- 1:42:19Now at the end of five and a half, the score,
- 1:42:21the Baltimore Orioles five and the New York Mets
- 1:42:23nothing. And here's music to think of Ryan Gold
- 1:42:26in any language by. In any language, it's easy
- 1:42:49to understand why Rheingold is as good to your
- 1:42:52taste as it is to your thirst. Extra dry brewing
- 1:42:55makes the difference. Makes each Rheingold so
- 1:42:58smooth, so crisp, so satisfying. Rheingold after
- 1:43:03Rheingold. It's as good to your taste as it is
- 1:43:06to your thirst. of the sixth inning, right fielder
- 1:43:36Sam Bowens will lead off for the Orioles. A check
- 1:43:40that is going to be catcher Dick Brown, followed
- 1:43:43by Sam Bowens. Brown took over for John Orsino.
- 1:43:48Orsino drew a walk and singled a right center
- 1:43:50in two times left. Dick Brown leading off for
- 1:43:55the Orioles, last of the sixth inning, Larry
- 1:43:57Bernard on the mound. Tracy Stallard worked the
- 1:43:59first two, Jack Fisher then worked two, and now
- 1:44:02Bernard starts his second inning. Galen Frisco
- 1:44:04is getting warm, and he'll take over for a couple.
- 1:44:08Foul tip, strike one. Well, tomorrow the Mets
- 1:44:15are back in New York enjoying an off day. Monday
- 1:44:19they will be attended to parade by the Jamaica
- 1:44:22Chamber of Commerce. Our next broadcast will
- 1:44:25be on Tuesday night, the National League opener
- 1:44:27from Connie Mack Stadium in Philadelphia. Brown
- 1:44:33standing straight up. Now Cox is about high behind
- 1:44:35his ear. Looks at a sneaky fastball over for
- 1:44:39a call strike, but I heard he sneaked that one
- 1:44:41in on him. Now a two -strike count on Dick Brown.
- 1:44:47Well, Dick's old high school buddy who broke
- 1:44:49in so sensationally and then suffered a tragic
- 1:44:51accident is now a baseball broadcaster. Off the
- 1:44:55outside corner, Herb's score this year will be
- 1:44:57helping on the broadcast of the Cleveland game.
- 1:45:01During the high school days, the battery was
- 1:45:03score pitching and Brown catching. One ball and
- 1:45:17two strikes to Dick Brown. Now Larry Menard is
- 1:45:25over the head. The pitch fouled off. He went
- 1:45:27for an inside delivery. Folded foul back over
- 1:45:29toward the... Mets dugout. Perfect day, a marvelous
- 1:45:35crowd. Final exhibition game for New York. Mets
- 1:45:37flying back home after the game today. Pitching
- 1:45:48one and two. Ground ball hit right back to the
- 1:45:51mound. Taken by Benares. He flips the first one
- 1:45:53down. One away and nobody on. Up to hit now will
- 1:45:59be the right fielder, Sam Bowen. Last year at
- 1:46:07Rochester, Sam Bowen's at 285 with 70 RBIs. He
- 1:46:13has good size. He packs about 195 pounds on a
- 1:46:166 '2 inch frame. Right hand hitter with an overly
- 1:46:19closed set. Foul ball off the bat handle, slithering
- 1:46:23on the ground straight back. Outfield, a fan
- 1:46:35to round toward left, figuring Bowens as a full
- 1:46:37hitter with good power. The infield, a way around
- 1:46:42to the left. Apatow tries to pitch away from
- 1:46:46him. That's outside. One ball and one strike.
- 1:46:571 -1 delivery. Changeup inside and low. Two balls
- 1:47:01and a strike. Ron Hunt flying at third, protecting
- 1:47:14the line against Sam Bowens. Final tip, into
- 1:47:17the glove of Hawk Taylor, and the count is even
- 1:47:19now, two balls and two strikes. Fans remember
- 1:47:27that Guy Lombardo provides the musical entertainment
- 1:47:29preceding the opening game on Friday at Shea
- 1:47:32Stadium. The national anthem will be sung by
- 1:47:35that great Metropolitan Opera star, Robert Merrill.
- 1:47:38The 2 -2 delivery. Outside and high, it's ball
- 1:47:41three. Full count now, three and two. So the
- 1:47:50string is out, three and two on Sam Bowens. One
- 1:47:52out and nobody on. Now the pitch underway. An
- 1:47:55inside delivery, full foul. Down past the television
- 1:47:58camera and out of play. Our next broadcast will
- 1:48:03be on Tuesday night out of Philadelphia. Game
- 1:48:05will be both broadcast and televised back to
- 1:48:07New York. 3 -2. Fouled again. Soap and Art having
- 1:48:17quite a duo here with Sam Bowen. Larry came on
- 1:48:24to pitch in the fifth inning with two outs and
- 1:48:26two uns. John Powell hit a home run over the
- 1:48:29right field fence to drive in three. 3 -2 delivery.
- 1:48:35And he pops it up on the right side towards shallow
- 1:48:38right field, trailing out of Samwell. He's there,
- 1:48:40and he makes the catch two men down. Now two
- 1:48:45outs and nobody on, Brooks Robinson coming on
- 1:48:48to hit. Brooks single to left, driving in the
- 1:48:51first run of the afternoon, and then fly to center,
- 1:48:54one hit and two times up. Brooks has led the
- 1:48:57Orioles in RBIs during the spring game. He covers
- 1:49:05third base like a vacuum cleaner. Little bit
- 1:49:11of high, one ball and no strike. and the Mets
- 1:49:25nothing. We're in the last half of the sixth
- 1:49:26inning. Now Bernard out of his windup delivers
- 1:49:36a little bit high with it. Two balls and no strike.
- 1:49:542 -0 delivery. This was over and Robbie was taking
- 1:49:56all away. The pitch is a strike on the outside
- 1:49:59corner. Two balls and one strike. Inside, Brooks
- 1:50:09had to jump back and the count goes to 3 -1.
- 1:50:12Two outs and nobody on here in the last of the
- 1:50:15sixth inning. Baltimore five runs on seven hits.
- 1:50:18New York no runs on five hits. Barber has kept
- 1:50:21the hits scattered in only one inning as he's
- 1:50:23given up more than one hit. Ground ball hammered
- 1:50:25towards short. Fielded by Al Moran. He hurries
- 1:50:28to peg across, and Smith on the side is out.
- 1:50:31No runs, no hits, no errors, and none left on.
- 1:50:34Now six innings complete, and Fort Smith, Virginia,
- 1:50:36the score. The Baltimore Orioles 5 and the New
- 1:50:39York Mets. We're going now to the top half of
- 1:50:42the seventh inning, and shortstop Al Moran is
- 1:50:44up to lead off for the New York Mets, facing
- 1:50:46Steve Barber, who started and he's come all the
- 1:50:48way. The Orioles leading by a score of 5 -0 in
- 1:50:53this, the last exhibition game for the Mets.
- 1:50:56The Orioles have one more. They go to Philadelphia
- 1:50:58tomorrow. A left -hander with the pitch and it's
- 1:51:02low for ball one. They've seen the first Mets
- 1:51:11banner of the season here in Portsmouth, Virginia,
- 1:51:13so the season has indeed begun. By the pitch
- 1:51:18and it's in there for a called strike. 1 -1.
- 1:51:24The banner saying, we love the Mets, has been
- 1:51:27sung across the top of the center field bleachers.
- 1:51:31And a group there from Connecticut, Yonkers,
- 1:51:34and Brooklyn. Here's a pitch swung on. It's a
- 1:51:36ground ball to second base. Gilead there over.
- 1:51:39Underhand's on to first in time. And Al Moran
- 1:51:41has grounded out second to first. There's one
- 1:51:43away. Larry Benares is due up at Chris Cannizzaro.
- 1:51:47It's going to bet for Larry Benares. Chris. Camisero.
- 1:51:54The North has completed his two -inning stint,
- 1:51:57during which he gave up three runs on two hits.
- 1:52:02Struck out one and walked none. Jalen Sisco will
- 1:52:13be the next pitcher. for the New York Mets next
- 1:52:16inning. He has just now completed his warm -ups
- 1:52:18and is walking on in toward the dugout area.
- 1:52:23Canizaro is a catcher by trade, a right -hand
- 1:52:25batter, left -hander. Steve Barber fish -mitches
- 1:52:27everybody, including Dick Brown, and bangs up
- 1:52:30against the screen behind the plate. So it is
- 1:52:34ball one to Canizaro. The Mets right now are
- 1:52:37carrying four catchers. They figure to platoon
- 1:52:41Jesse Gonder and Hawk Taylor. Now they have Canazaro
- 1:52:45and John Stevenson. Stevenson can be used in
- 1:52:48the outfield or at theory base. Has been the
- 1:52:51worst out both places. Played part of one exhibition
- 1:52:55game in left field. Bring the ground ball to
- 1:52:57short. Taken by Aparicio and the throw on the
- 1:53:00first in time and he's out. Two men down. And
- 1:53:05that will bring up Dick Smith, the first baseman.
- 1:53:09Let's have three first basemen. Ed Crane Poole,
- 1:53:12Tim Harkness, Dick Smith. Last year, here at
- 1:53:17this ballpark, Frank D. Lawrence Stadium in Portsmouth,
- 1:53:19Crane fool hit three home runs. Of course, he
- 1:53:22did not get into the lineup today, hasn't been
- 1:53:24in, because of the fact that he is a left -hand
- 1:53:26batter, and Casey Singer wanted to keep his right
- 1:53:29hand hitting first baseman, Dick Smith, in the
- 1:53:31lineup. Fronted foul. Smith trying to use his
- 1:53:38speed as he found Brooks Robinson playing a deep
- 1:53:40third base. but just tipped it off, and it's
- 1:53:43a strike. Dick Hall is now loosening up in the
- 1:53:51bullpen for the Orioles. Barber again with the
- 1:53:59pitch, and it is swing on and miss. Two strikeouts.
- 1:54:03Steve Barber's schedule to go seven innings,
- 1:54:05and we're in the top half of the seventh here
- 1:54:07now, with the Orioles leading by a score of 5
- 1:54:09-0. Previously this spring, the Mets and the
- 1:54:12Orioles played a two -game set in Miami, both
- 1:54:14night games and split the two games. Swing and
- 1:54:19a miss, and Barber finishes up with a strikeout.
- 1:54:21As he got Smith, he set the side down in order
- 1:54:23in the top of the seventh with no runs, no hits,
- 1:54:26no errors, none left. And the score at the end
- 1:54:27of six and one half innings is the Orioles five
- 1:54:30and the Mets nothing. It'll be Jerry Adair coming
- 1:54:35up now to lead off for the Orioles in the bottom
- 1:54:38half of the seventh inning. And Lou Jackson is
- 1:54:40swinging a bat in the on -deck circle, preparatory
- 1:54:43to batting for Steve Farber, due up second in
- 1:54:45this inning. Galen Sisko is the pitcher in the
- 1:54:47ballgame for the Mets, and Jerry Hensley has
- 1:54:49gone down to the bullpen now. Right -hand batter,
- 1:54:54Jerry Adair, two for two this afternoon. In and
- 1:54:57waiting is Sisko, winds and fires, and the pitch
- 1:54:59is swung. It's a ground ball toward the hole,
- 1:55:01backhanded off the glove of Moran, all out in
- 1:55:03the left field for a base hit. Retrieved by Hickman
- 1:55:06and fired back in. It is three straight base
- 1:55:09hits for Jerry Adair as he opens up the bottom
- 1:55:11of the seventh with a single at left. Now Lou
- 1:55:16Jackson is batting for Steve Farber. Last year
- 1:55:29at Toronto, Jackson hit 315, including 31 home
- 1:55:34runs. We're getting a pinch runner now. Now Savarin
- 1:55:45is running for Jerry Adair at first base. Savarin
- 1:55:49an infielder by trade. There is nobody out. The
- 1:55:59Orioles lead 5 -0. Bottom half of the seventh.
- 1:56:05Jalen Sisko up and set now. Savarin leads it
- 1:56:08first. And if it's Lou Jackson, if it's deep
- 1:56:11to the right field corner, it's going to carry
- 1:56:13four and out. Stays in, and it is a home run
- 1:56:16for Lou Jackson. Way out of the ballpark and
- 1:56:20beyond. Over the fence and on the rooftop of
- 1:56:23a house beyond. Casey Stengel talks about ballplay
- 1:56:27that hit him over buildings, and that's what
- 1:56:28Lou Jackson did. A two -run homer. Savarene scores
- 1:56:31ahead of Lou Jackson as he swung on the first
- 1:56:33pitch that he got from Galen Fisco and gave it
- 1:56:36the long ride. Second home run for the Orioles.
- 1:56:39Boots on a three -run homer earlier, and the
- 1:56:41Orioles are out in front by a score of seven
- 1:56:43to nothing. Still nobody out, and Russ Snyder
- 1:56:51is the batter. Left -hand batter. And the pitch
- 1:57:00is high for a ball. Anytime Snyder is up there,
- 1:57:02you have to protect against the possibility of
- 1:57:04the butt. For that reason, Ron Hunt is on the
- 1:57:07edge of the grass at third. Disco again winds
- 1:57:13and fires, and the pitch is low for a ball. 2
- 1:57:17-0 to the Orioles' center fielder. Young Jerry
- 1:57:21Hensley continues to warm up in the net bullpen.
- 1:57:33Disco with the pitch. And it's low for a ball.
- 1:57:38So it has run out 3 -0 now to Snyder. 3 -0 pitch,
- 1:57:51and it's in there for a call strike. He was taking
- 1:57:53all the way, and it's 3 -1. Now the 3 -1 delivery.
- 1:58:04Hit on the ground. And it is taken by Samuel.
- 1:58:07He plays to Fisco, and he got him in time. A
- 1:58:10six -minute made a run at the ball in step and
- 1:58:12went on over in front of Samuel. Made the backhand
- 1:58:14step, didn't come up with it. Samuel did, and
- 1:58:16Fisco got over the cover in time. So if you're
- 1:58:20scoring, the play goes 4 -1. One away, and that
- 1:58:22brings up Lou Aparicio. He is one for two in
- 1:58:26a walk, and he has scored one run. Let's go.
- 1:58:39Wines and fires. And it's outside for a ball.
- 1:58:44One man out, nobody on base. Orioles 7, the Mets
- 1:58:47nothing. Right after this game, the Mets will
- 1:58:53be flying into New York. Here's a pitch in there
- 1:58:56for a call strike. It's 1 -1. The Mets are expected
- 1:59:00to arrive at John F. Kennedy International Airport
- 1:59:02approximately three and a half hours after the
- 1:59:05conclusion of this game. The 1 -1 pitch, and
- 1:59:09it's low for a ball. Luis Separicio. Drew Powell
- 1:59:17is waiting around on deck. Disco looks for the
- 1:59:28sign. And the pitch is high and away. Try to
- 1:59:37slip pitch. It's Aparicio at play. We'll be on
- 1:59:46the air Tuesday night at 8 p .m. New York time
- 1:59:48from Connie Mack Stadium in Philadelphia. Pitch
- 1:59:53is in there. He's starting to go held up. Call
- 1:59:55strike. This ballpark is the home of the Tidewater
- 2:00:06Tides of the Carolina League. They have a working
- 2:00:08agreement with the Chicago White Sox, who played
- 2:00:10here yesterday against the Reds. And here's a
- 2:00:15drive down the right field line. A Tommy Hawk
- 2:00:18swinging a fair ball. It'll go for extra bases
- 2:00:20as it is being run down in the right field corner
- 2:00:22by Joe Christopher. And Aparicio's on his way
- 2:00:24to third. As the throw comes in, he holds up
- 2:00:26with a triple right down the right field line.
- 2:00:29He Tommy Hawks it and kept it in fair territory
- 2:00:31so that... The ball scams in, off in the foul
- 2:00:34down back of the right field corner, and Christopher
- 2:00:36had to run it down while the speedy Luis Aparicio
- 2:00:39pulled up his period with a triple. And that's
- 2:00:46going to bring up Boog Powell, who is one for
- 2:00:49three, but the one was a big one, a home run
- 2:00:51over the right field fence. We're in the bottom
- 2:01:01of the seventh. You're in Portsmouth, Virginia.
- 2:01:09This coach pitch is whipped into center field
- 2:01:12for a base hit. That's George Aparicio. Can he
- 2:01:14lift with the ball? Plays it back in. Boog Powell
- 2:01:16is on it first with a single to right and a run
- 2:01:19batted in. It is the Orioles' eighth and the
- 2:01:21Mets' nothing. And right now, we pause for station
- 2:01:24identification. This is the New York Mets Baseball
- 2:01:27Network. This is Lindsey Nelson with Ralph Kiner
- 2:01:32and Bob Murphy at Frank D. Lawrence Stadium in
- 2:01:35Fort Smith, Virginia. The final exhibition game
- 2:01:38of this spring for the New York Mets against
- 2:01:40the Baltimore Orioles. The Orioles are leading
- 2:01:42by a score of 8 -0. Norm Seaborn is coming up
- 2:01:46with a runner at first and one man out. Seaborn
- 2:01:50is nothing for three. Pitch is inside for a ball.
- 2:02:00Sebring came into this afternoon's game with
- 2:02:02an average of 276 for the spring, but it's a
- 2:02:04little deceptive because he has had only one
- 2:02:07extra base hit all spring. One double. Throw
- 2:02:14over and not in time. Powell takes a short lead.
- 2:02:23Pitches in there for a call strike to Sebring.
- 2:02:28Sebring obtained. From the Kansas City A's in
- 2:02:31exchange for first baseman Jim Gentile, Steven
- 2:02:36played with the Yankees as a teammate of Hank
- 2:02:39Bauer, his first manager, and then, of course,
- 2:02:41Bauer managed him in Kansas City. This goes,
- 2:02:50checks and deals, swung out and missed. The Orioles
- 2:03:05have three runs in this inning. Cisco's pitch,
- 2:03:14a little tight. Popped out of the glove of Hawk
- 2:03:16Taylor, he retrieved and returned it. Leading
- 2:03:22hitter for the Orioles during their exhibition
- 2:03:25season in Florida was utility infielder Bob Johnson,
- 2:03:29who hit .370, followed closely by catcher Dick
- 2:03:31Brown, who hit .362. 2 -2 pitch. Hit on the ground
- 2:03:38toward second. Samwell over to Moran. He can't
- 2:03:42find the handle and steps on the bag himself.
- 2:03:44Apparently he got a finger cut in the webbing
- 2:03:46of his own glove. And they got the force at second,
- 2:03:48but no other play. So there is no error charge.
- 2:03:52But it looked like an easy double play ball.
- 2:03:54Samwell started to scoop and somehow got mixed
- 2:03:56up and the ball dropped out of the glove. And
- 2:03:58he's looking at the index finger of his right
- 2:03:59hand. Looks as though he got it caught in the
- 2:04:01webbing. And he finally picked up the ball and
- 2:04:03steps on the bag at second himself. So, Steven
- 2:04:08is on, two men out, and Dick Brown is coming
- 2:04:12up. He's been up one time, down to .60 to first.
- 2:04:18But a .362 batting average for the stay in Florida
- 2:04:21of the Orioles. Right -hand batter. Here's a
- 2:04:25swing and a miss for a strike. The Orioles 8
- 2:04:30and the Mets nothing. You're in the bottom half
- 2:04:32of the seventh inning. Galen Fisker steps off
- 2:04:45the rubber. And as he does, Dick Brown steps
- 2:04:47out of the batter's box. Again, we're set. The
- 2:04:54seaman leaves it first. Pitch to Brown is high
- 2:04:56for a ball. Galen Fisker, one -time captain and
- 2:05:02linebacker of Ohio State football team. Cisco
- 2:05:16checked. And the pitch is outside for a ball.
- 2:05:23Galen Cisco and Frank Howard were baseball teammates
- 2:05:27at Ohio State. And as undergraduates, they took
- 2:05:32a trip to Japan under the sponsorship of the
- 2:05:36State Department. Pitch is low, blocked by Taylor.
- 2:05:42Rolls a two -peat out in front of the plate.
- 2:05:43There is no advance by Steven at first base.
- 2:05:50Two men out. Gun, Cisco, check and deal. Pitch
- 2:06:05is swung on and pulled foul. On the ground, back
- 2:06:07of Therese. Continuing on down the left field
- 2:06:10line in foul territory. Billy Hunter coaching
- 2:06:14there at third. Sherm Lawler is coaching at first.
- 2:06:18As Gene Woodling was given the day off. Throughout
- 2:06:22the season, he will be stationed at first for
- 2:06:25the Orioles. Now the pitch to Brown. swung on
- 2:06:34and fouled off right off the protector of umpire
- 2:06:37Lou DeMuro. So Big Brown is still alive. Disco
- 2:06:54looks under Taylor. And the pitch swung on and
- 2:06:58fouled off off the screen this time. Mets arrived
- 2:07:10last night. Having worked out yesterday, then
- 2:07:15they left, actually, the Tampa airport about
- 2:07:184 p .m., arrived here around 7. Here's a pitch
- 2:07:22from on top of the foul, coming back now to play.
- 2:07:25Taylor starts to give it a run and gives up.
- 2:07:27This one comes on back. When the Mets arrived
- 2:07:32at their hotel, their motor hotel, the Chicago
- 2:07:34White Sox still were there. And before either
- 2:07:38team left, the Baltimore Orioles came in. So
- 2:07:40there was one point last night, and we had three
- 2:07:41major league teams in one lobby in Norfolk. Let's
- 2:07:54go check Sebring. And the pitch is high. Ball
- 2:07:57four. Big Brown goes to first with the base on
- 2:08:00ball. Sebring moves to second. Sam Bowens is
- 2:08:03coming up. And up one time and he popped out
- 2:08:06to second base. Point to the right -hand batter.
- 2:08:24Close stance. Swing and a foul ball top down
- 2:08:30to third base coach Billy Hunter. He'll just...
- 2:08:33Fires it right on back out to Galen Sisco. Owen's
- 2:08:39moving around, exercising a leg as though he
- 2:08:41chopped that one right off his ankle. And just
- 2:08:52outside the batter's box. Now he's coming in.
- 2:08:55He pitches right in for a call strike. That was
- 2:08:58a slip pitch. This coach said he's had this pitch
- 2:09:02for a couple of years, but it's just now that
- 2:09:04it's begun to look like one. Inside football.
- 2:09:08Here's a one -two pitch, and it's inside. Two
- 2:09:12-two. Leave first and second. There's a pitch
- 2:09:15deep to left field, way back toward the corner.
- 2:09:18And it is a fair ball going over the fence for
- 2:09:22a homer on for Bowen as it went around the foul
- 2:09:26pole. It is being questioned by Moran, but umpire
- 2:09:29Paul Crawford down the line says it went around
- 2:09:31the foul pole, 330 feet away, and it is a three
- 2:09:35-run homer for Sam Bowen, and the Orioles lead
- 2:09:38by a score of 11 -0. The third Oriole home run
- 2:09:48of this ballgame. One by Bruce Powell, one by
- 2:09:52Lou Jackson, one by Sam Bowen. Nobody on base
- 2:09:55and Brooks Robinson up now with two men out.
- 2:09:59Probably one for three today. Started in one
- 2:10:01run. Pitch is in there for a tall strike. Stacey
- 2:10:12Stengel out in front of the Mets dugout. Rating
- 2:10:15up and down. And the pitch is high for a ball.
- 2:10:26in the home run. Swing and a ground ball deep
- 2:10:34to third. One -handed by Rana. Throws on to first.
- 2:10:37In time and he got him. The side is retired.
- 2:10:40The Orioles got six runs on five hits. No errors
- 2:10:45and none left. And the score is the end of seven.
- 2:10:47Full innings of play is the Orioles 11 and the
- 2:10:52Mets nothing. Opening day at Shea Stadium in
- 2:10:56New York, less than a week away now. It'll be
- 2:10:58next Friday afternoon, April 17th, the New York
- 2:11:01Mets and the Pittsburgh Pirates. So if you have
- 2:11:06not already obtained your ticket for opening
- 2:11:10day, be sure and do so. And keep in mind that
- 2:11:19the ticket office will be open tomorrow at Shea
- 2:11:22Stadium. It is open on Sunday. Of course, the
- 2:11:29ticket office at Shea Stadium will be open until
- 2:11:315 o 'clock this afternoon. Opening day, Friday
- 2:11:36afternoon, April 17th. Now Dick Hall has come
- 2:11:45in to pitch for the Orioles. come out swinging
- 2:12:02the bat. You'll recall last year, Ed Cranfield
- 2:12:04hit three home runs here. As I remember it, and
- 2:12:08this is only a recollection that I would not
- 2:12:10bet much on, I think he hit the first two off
- 2:12:12Robin Roberts and the last one off Sue Miller.
- 2:12:17Ed Cranfield is being announced now. The official
- 2:12:26attendance figures have been announced, 5 ,350.
- 2:12:315 ,350 paid here this afternoon. And the pitch
- 2:12:46is low for a ball. Bob Johnson is now playing
- 2:12:48first base for the Orioles. And the pitch is
- 2:13:01low to Cranepool. That's the plate. 2 -0. And
- 2:13:06Bob Savarin is playing second base. He came out
- 2:13:13as a pinch runner, stayed in. And the pitch is
- 2:13:15outside for Ball. Down 3 -0 now to Ed Cranepool.
- 2:13:29We're in the top half of the eighth inning, and
- 2:13:31the pitch is fired in. Payne pulls just a 3 -0
- 2:13:33pitch for a called strike one. Jen Hall's pitch,
- 2:13:43and it's swung on and fouled off to the left
- 2:13:45side and out of play, and the count is now full
- 2:13:47at 3 -2. Steve Barber with seven innings, which
- 2:13:56he allowed no runs on five, hit the strikeout
- 2:13:58four, and walked two. And the picture's low ball
- 2:14:04for Cranefool, has drawn a walk. Goes down to
- 2:14:11first base, and Ron Hunt is coming up. Hunt's
- 2:14:22two for two in a walk today, right -hand batter.
- 2:14:38Hot batting number three today in the Met batting
- 2:14:41order. Craneville leads it first, and the pitch
- 2:14:44is in there for a called strike. Jim Hickman
- 2:14:47is waiting on deck. The Orioles 11 and the Mets
- 2:15:24nothing here in Portsmouth, Virginia. Pitches
- 2:15:35in for a called strike to Jim Hickman. Dick Hall
- 2:15:44again, into the motion. There is a check swing,
- 2:15:48but it's in there for a strike. Two strike counts.
- 2:15:57Bob Taylor moves out to the on -deck circle.
- 2:16:00Here's a swing and a miss, and Hall chalks up
- 2:16:03a strikeout. His first as he gets Jim Hickman.
- 2:16:06For the Mets, no runs, no hits, no errors, none
- 2:16:09loves. And to score at the end of seven and a
- 2:16:11half innings is the Orioles 11 and the Mets nothing.
- 2:16:17Have you made any plans yet? For after the game,
- 2:16:21I mean. If you haven't thought, then give some
- 2:16:24thought to all the great things there are to
- 2:16:26see and to do and to enjoy wherever you are along
- 2:16:29the Rheingold Beach. For this is the place where
- 2:16:33it's easy to find the best fun, the best food,
- 2:16:36and the best beer. Rheingold Extra Dry. Take
- 2:16:41one taste and you'll know Rheingold is as good
- 2:16:44to your taste as it is to your taste. Rheingold
- 2:16:47is brewed by people who love beer for people
- 2:16:50who love beer. With a crisp liveliness no other
- 2:16:54beer can match. So tonight, have a big time.
- 2:16:57Have a good time. Have a Rheingold and have another.
- 2:17:02Rheingold is as good to your taste as it is to
- 2:17:05your thirst. Rheingold after Rheingold. Jerry
- 2:17:11Hensley is now in the ballgame as the pitcher
- 2:17:14for the New York Mets, and Ed Cranes, who stays
- 2:17:16in the game, in center field. He batted for Rod
- 2:17:21Kinneal, and he is staying in the game. Jerry
- 2:17:31Hensley is the young fellow who did not pitch
- 2:17:33an inning of baseball last year. As the property
- 2:17:37of the Pittsburgh Pirates, he and his twin brother
- 2:17:39and battery mate were at Kingsport. However,
- 2:17:44he was on the roster but simply worked out before
- 2:17:47games and did not appear in a single game. Red
- 2:17:50Murph, a Met scout, had seen him in high school,
- 2:17:53saw him warm up before a ball game there, and
- 2:17:55Hensley was drafted by the New York Mets. Bob
- 2:18:05Savareen is up now to lead off for the Orioles.
- 2:18:07And the first pitch is low for Ball. His track
- 2:18:10and trade is a blazing fastball. Lou Jackson
- 2:18:23is now on deck for the Orioles. Came out as a
- 2:18:27pinch hitter and saved in the game. This pitch
- 2:18:31is in for a called strike. Hensley getting a
- 2:18:48sign from Hawk Taylor who's been behind the plate
- 2:18:50all day. Here's the pitch in there. Went to the
- 2:18:53breaking ball for a called strike. One and two
- 2:18:56now to Savarin. Left hand at it. Ed Bowida is
- 2:19:06warming up now in the bullpen for the Mets. Ed
- 2:19:08Bowida. This pitch is fired high for a ball.
- 2:19:22Sisko worked only one inning, which he allowed
- 2:19:24six runs on five hits. Struck out none and walked
- 2:19:27one. Hensley with the pitch, and it's low. A
- 2:19:37full count of three and two to Bob Savarene.
- 2:19:51Hensley looks for the sign, and here's the payoff
- 2:19:53pitch. Swung on, and there's strike three. So
- 2:19:57young Jerry Hensley chalks up a strikeout, and
- 2:19:59this is Lou Jackson coming up. That is for Barb
- 2:20:03and Staten again. Pinch hit, home run. His only
- 2:20:10previous appearance. the pitch is low for ball
- 2:20:31one to Lou Jackson. The Orioles, 11, and the
- 2:20:41Mets, nothing. The Orioles, 11, and the Mets,
- 2:20:46nothing. In the bottom half of the eighth inning,
- 2:20:48Richmond, Virginia. The Orioles are the home
- 2:20:50team. Entry six swung on and foul back into the
- 2:21:00glove of Hawk Taylor. 1 -1 count. Now the pitch
- 2:21:20is high off the top of the glove of Taylor and
- 2:21:22continuing on back. It's 2 -1. Today, of course,
- 2:21:26without the services of George Altman, who was
- 2:21:28left back at the hotel where he could undergo
- 2:21:30further treatment for the shoulder injury he
- 2:21:33sustained on the final day in Florida. And I
- 2:21:37guess March 1st, there is a good possibility
- 2:21:39he may be able to play on Tuesday night, although
- 2:21:41it is not a certainty. Mike Thomas is in New
- 2:21:44York, where he was sent several days ago for
- 2:21:46treatment of tendinitis. There's a swing and
- 2:21:49a miss. All the way around for Lou Jackson's
- 2:21:522 -2 count. Tomorrow will be an off day for the
- 2:21:57New York Mets in which they will visit themselves
- 2:21:58with uniform fitting. Carl Willey, of course,
- 2:22:04is in New York. He went directly yesterday. Flying
- 2:22:07up from St. Pete with his jaw wired. With a swing
- 2:22:13and a foul ball. Back and out of play. Count
- 2:22:15holds at 2 -2. No man out. Nobody on base. On
- 2:22:27Monday, the Mets will participate in a 10 .15
- 2:22:29a .m. Flushing, Jamaica parade, followed by a
- 2:22:33luncheon. Then they'll work out on the Hofstra
- 2:22:35field. Swing and a foul ball off and out of play.
- 2:22:45Work continues, of course, on the field at Shea
- 2:22:48Stadium to get it in shape for opening day. Friday,
- 2:22:53April 17th, the Mets and the Pittsburgh Pirates.
- 2:22:582 -2 pitch to Lou Jackson. Breaking ball swung
- 2:23:00on, fouled off, got just enough of it to stay
- 2:23:02alive. There's Hock Taylor couldn't hold on,
- 2:23:04and the count continues at 2 -2. The Mets will
- 2:23:15go to Philadelphia Tuesday morning. Two, two
- 2:23:21pitches in there for a cold strike three. Suck
- 2:23:23him out. Sir Jerry Hensley has placed too many.
- 2:23:25Suck them both out. You know, people who like
- 2:23:28beer best like Rheingold best of all, and I'm
- 2:23:31one of them. Hope you are, too, because Rheingold
- 2:23:33is as good to your taste as it is to your spirit.
- 2:23:42Dress night has been up twice without a hit after
- 2:23:45having replaced Jackie Brandt, who started at
- 2:23:47center field. It is hit in the air to center
- 2:23:54field, and Ed Greenville is coming on for his
- 2:23:56first chance of the day, and he makes the catch.
- 2:23:59But Jerry Hensley gets the start out in order
- 2:24:01in the bottom of the eighth with no runs, no
- 2:24:02hits, no errors, none left, and the score at
- 2:24:04the end of eighth is the Orioles 11 and the Mets
- 2:24:08nothing. Well, the year of the Mets' move into
- 2:24:15Shea Stadium is upon us. Everything written about
- 2:24:19this development becomes a collector's item.
- 2:24:20A special dedication program has been prepared
- 2:24:23for the Mets and will be on sale at Shea Stadium
- 2:24:25when the season opens Friday. You can also order
- 2:24:29copies of that program by mail. This book contains
- 2:24:33pictures and a history of the New York National
- 2:24:35League teams, Apollo Grounds, Ebbets Field, Shea
- 2:24:37Stadium, and J .C. Stengel. The program will
- 2:24:40be available at the stadium only during the first
- 2:24:43homestand, so to get your copy in advance. and
- 2:24:46$1 to dedication program Shea Stadium, Flushing,
- 2:24:50New York. We're going now to the top half of
- 2:24:57the ninth inning with Dick Hall on the mound
- 2:25:01for the Orioles. Bob Taylor due up for the Mets.
- 2:25:14Duke Snyder has a bat at the corner of the bedrock.
- 2:25:20Taylor is there also. And Taylor is coming on
- 2:25:26up to bat. And Snyder is following him out to
- 2:25:29the on -deck circle. So apparently it's going
- 2:25:31to be Taylor batting and then Snyder batting
- 2:25:33statistically due up next. Mark Taylor is one
- 2:25:39for three this afternoon. You'll recall that
- 2:25:43last year, Duke's matter joined the Mets right
- 2:25:46here at this stadium. After he was purchased
- 2:25:51from the Dodgers, he flew in here and got here
- 2:25:54just about game time last year. They call at
- 2:26:01the pitch in the top of the ninth, and it's outside
- 2:26:03for a ball. A sturdy group of New Yorkers out
- 2:26:11in center field with the cry of, let's go Mets.
- 2:26:13Here's the pitch. Low for a ball. Oh, looks to
- 2:26:23dig Brown first time. And the pitch is swung
- 2:26:28on. It's due to left if it stays there, but it's
- 2:26:30curving on over and disappearing a foul ball.
- 2:26:40Bob Taylor. One and one out of Taylor. Snyder
- 2:26:53still there in the on -deck circle. This pitch
- 2:26:57is thrown out and popped up and the short center
- 2:26:59field. Bavarin is out there and Snyder is there
- 2:27:02and Russ Snyder makes the catch. So there's one
- 2:27:07away, and now here's Duke Snyder batting for
- 2:27:09Joe Christopher, and Snyder's getting a hand.
- 2:27:42Jesse Gundy is now around the back rack of the
- 2:27:44New York Mets. There's one away and nobody on
- 2:27:47here in the top half of the ninth. There's a
- 2:27:52swing and a miss. Two strikeouts for Duke Snyder.
- 2:28:12He's taken by Hall, and he plays on over to first
- 2:28:14in time to Johnson. Snyder goes out 50 to first,
- 2:28:19and now Jesse Gonder is coming up to bat for
- 2:28:21Sonny Tomwell. Gandhi's a left -hand batter facing
- 2:28:44right -hand pitcher Dick Hall, who is the second
- 2:28:48Oriole pitcher of the day. Pitcher's outside
- 2:28:52for a ball. Steve Barber pitched the first seven
- 2:28:54innings and is the pitcher of record. Tim Harkness
- 2:28:57has moved out to the on -deck circle now with
- 2:29:00the hope that Gandhi can keep it alive long enough
- 2:29:03for him to get a chance. This is a note of Gandhi.
- 2:29:17A swing and a miss. One and two is the count.
- 2:29:21Not a gander. The Orioles 11 and the Mets nothing.
- 2:29:36One -two delivery. Set up outside. Two -two.
- 2:29:45We'll be on the air Tuesday night from County
- 2:29:47Night Stadium in Philadelphia at 8 p .m. There
- 2:29:52is a swing and a miss and Gander has struck out
- 2:29:54and this ball game is over. Hall getting two
- 2:29:57strikeouts during his tenure as the Mets are
- 2:30:00out in the top of the ninth with no runs, no
- 2:30:02hits, no errors, none left. And the Orioles have
- 2:30:05won it by a score of 11 to nothing. We'll be
- 2:30:07back in a moment with a final summary and totals.
- 2:30:11Right now the final score of the game is the
- 2:30:13Orioles 11 and the Mets nothing. And now here's
- 2:30:17news about a cigarette that really scores with
- 2:30:19baseball fans.
