- 0:01Speaker 1: Jeff Legwald is our Broncos insider Altitude Sports Radio ninety
- 0:05Speaker 1: two five Pro Football.
- 0:07Speaker 2: The insider I've covered while.
- 0:09Speaker 3: Jeff Legwall he's the balloon popper.
- 0:12Speaker 4: He doesn't blow it up.
- 0:13Speaker 3: Brought to you by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers
- 0:16Speaker 3: IBDW Local sixty eight. Start with the jomp and with
- 0:19Speaker 3: the career. It's Leggy on Altitude Sports Radio five.
- 0:29Speaker 1: Yeah, Jeff Legwalld, time here on a Monday afternoon, Leggy.
- 0:32Speaker 1: There's a lot of ways to lose a football game.
- 0:36Speaker 1: Sometimes you lose because you didn't play well enough. Other
- 0:39Speaker 1: times you lose just because the other team was better.
- 0:43Speaker 1: As you've had a chance to digest the entirety of
- 0:46Speaker 1: the Broncos visit to Kansas City. Was that an execution
- 0:49Speaker 1: loss or a talent loss for the Broncos? Uh?
- 0:53Speaker 2: Yesterday it was an execution loss.
- 0:55Speaker 4: I mean that's, you know, other than the Ravens game,
- 0:59Speaker 4: which is you know, is what it was. We all
- 1:04Speaker 4: saw it. But other than the Ravens game, they have
- 1:07Speaker 4: played playoff worthy defense. They sacked Mahomes more times than
- 1:13Speaker 4: they've sacked him in any any game they've faced him.
- 1:17Speaker 4: You know, they you know, Ja Kwon McMillan fell down
- 1:21Speaker 4: in the end zone, but they largely handled Kelsey. They
- 1:24Speaker 4: kept Hopkins from He had one big play when Sir
- 1:27Speaker 4: Tam wasn't on him, and even that was an eighteen
- 1:30Speaker 4: yard or wasn't like a you know, a bomb or something.
- 1:33Speaker 4: So they've played well enough on defense. Sixteen is you
- 1:38Speaker 4: know that that should put you in the ballpark of winning.
- 1:42Speaker 4: It's just you know, they have a penalty that makes
- 1:45Speaker 4: it a sixty yard field goal.
- 1:46Speaker 2: At the end of the half.
- 1:48Speaker 4: They you know, I think at one point in the
- 1:51Speaker 4: third quarter they had ten yards of offense and then
- 1:54Speaker 4: the block kicked the end the game. So I mean,
- 1:56Speaker 4: that's it's an execution thing on offense right now.
- 2:00Speaker 2: And they they had two really good drives.
- 2:02Speaker 4: I thought the one long touchdown drive was as good
- 2:05Speaker 4: of a play calling sequence as Peyton has had with
- 2:09Speaker 4: the Broncos. But then in the second half they again
- 2:13Speaker 4: go away from some of the things they did when
- 2:16Speaker 4: it was going okay, and you know, it's they're still
- 2:19Speaker 4: kind of baffling on offense. And I think in the
- 2:23Speaker 4: end it was an execution on offense. They could have
- 2:27Speaker 4: put the game away with you know, one more better
- 2:30Speaker 4: red zone trip.
- 2:33Speaker 3: All right, Jeff, what what does happen in the second half?
- 2:36Speaker 3: Is it is it self inflicted as maybe you suggested there,
- 2:39Speaker 3: because you quit calling those same plays and running out
- 2:42Speaker 3: those same personnel groups, or is it adjustments made by
- 2:46Speaker 3: the other team that forces them to go into some
- 2:48Speaker 3: of these stallouts offensively.
- 2:52Speaker 2: Well, it's a little of both.
- 2:53Speaker 4: And I mean, you're never in the NFL, if you're
- 2:55Speaker 4: playing anybody good, you're not going to keep you know,
- 2:58Speaker 4: sort of being able to bang the drum the same
- 3:01Speaker 4: way over and over again. I'm just saying in the
- 3:04Speaker 4: first half, they were slightly more diversified.
- 3:07Speaker 2: We saw some more tight ends, you know, we saw.
- 3:12Speaker 4: You know, just some different or some route combinations they
- 3:16Speaker 4: haven't used a lot of this year, and I think
- 3:20Speaker 4: it was helpful, you know.
- 3:23Speaker 2: And they really.
- 3:24Speaker 4: Can't seem to find a way to fit a sort
- 3:29Speaker 4: of traditional running game. You know, they're trying to create
- 3:32Speaker 4: a running game with memes in the backfield and some
- 3:36Speaker 4: fly sweeps and you know, all of these things to
- 3:40Speaker 4: the perimeter, and you know, will that avoid some three
- 3:45Speaker 4: and outs if they if they pound on the run
- 3:47Speaker 4: game a little bit, I don't know that for sure.
- 3:50Speaker 2: I just know that.
- 3:52Speaker 4: When they get away from at least having the threat
- 3:56Speaker 4: of Nicks under center a little bit or some play
- 4:01Speaker 4: that defenses have an easier time. And that's what defensive
- 4:04Speaker 4: coaches are telling me.
- 4:07Speaker 1: Jeff Lagwall brought to you by the International Brotherhood of
- 4:10Speaker 1: Electrical Workers IBW Local sixty eight. You start with the job,
- 4:14Speaker 1: you end with a career, Jeff. The blockfield goal at
- 4:17Speaker 1: the end, Leoshanal gets through, Forsyth put on his back,
- 4:22Speaker 1: Matt Peart kind of a stab step to the outside,
- 4:25Speaker 1: and the entire left side of the line just absolutely crumbled.
- 4:30Speaker 1: You go back and watch the pat after the Courtland
- 4:33Speaker 1: Sutton touchdown, it looked like that was already the case.
- 4:38Speaker 1: How would you grade this out? And it's always tough
- 4:40Speaker 1: to make these adjustments in game, But was there a
- 4:43Speaker 1: coaching staff failure that led to that final play going
- 4:48Speaker 1: Kansas City's way?
- 4:50Speaker 4: Well, I mean, you're always gonna say yes because of
- 4:54Speaker 4: the way it turned out, and that's you know, it's
- 4:57Speaker 4: a bottom line business. Even coaches would tell you that.
- 5:01Speaker 4: But I mean the Chiefs were pretty I know some
- 5:04Speaker 4: folks with the Chiefs, and they said that Chanel had
- 5:11Speaker 4: come to the sidelines or the other players had come
- 5:14Speaker 4: to the sideline after the pat and said, this is
- 5:18Speaker 4: something we could come back to, and they did. And
- 5:23Speaker 4: you know, the Broncos have created some plays on special
- 5:26Speaker 4: teams when they find a weakness or a crack.
- 5:29Speaker 2: That's just good scouting. That's gonna happen sometimes.
- 5:33Speaker 4: I don't think, you know, you can just say, oh,
- 5:37Speaker 4: it's for size fault and you know that's it. Uh,
- 5:42Speaker 4: you know, he had some help there in terms of
- 5:44Speaker 4: you know, the outside edge cave two.
- 5:47Speaker 2: And you know, I thought the kick was a little low.
- 5:50Speaker 2: I don't you know, I don't have.
- 5:51Speaker 4: My pro tractor out to measure it, but in real time,
- 5:56Speaker 4: in real time, it looked a slightly low to me,
- 5:59Speaker 4: and I thought, even looking at it on video, uh,
- 6:03Speaker 4: it may have because he got it with his wrist.
- 6:05Speaker 4: He didn't even need to get it with his with
- 6:07Speaker 4: his hands or his fingertips or whatever. So I think
- 6:11Speaker 4: there's a lot of things going on there. And yeah,
- 6:13Speaker 4: some of it is is coaching that you don't know.
- 6:16Speaker 4: Maybe they did notice and thought we can get away
- 6:18Speaker 4: with it. You know, we'll we'll get it next week.
- 6:21Speaker 4: Because it's hard to switch personnel on special teams when
- 6:27Speaker 4: when guys, you know, Matt Perk has a role in
- 6:30Speaker 4: the offense. It's hard to switch guys around without injuries
- 6:34Speaker 4: or anything on special teams sometimes during games.
- 6:37Speaker 1: Wait a minute, Ley, you just made me realize something. Okay,
- 6:39Speaker 1: So every every player in the league with the next
- 6:42Speaker 1: gen stats, they all they all have it chips, so
- 6:44Speaker 1: you can you can put this pedometer on guys find
- 6:47Speaker 1: out whatever their top speed was on a on a breakaway,
- 6:50Speaker 1: I mean launch angle and VLO like we have it
- 6:53Speaker 1: in baseball, like exit vlo and launch angle. When are
- 6:57Speaker 1: we going to get it on field goal and attempts?
- 7:01Speaker 1: This feels to me like the next most logical step.
- 7:03Speaker 1: Now for the networks, you would think the.
- 7:06Speaker 2: Chip and the ball would help you with that kind
- 7:08Speaker 2: of stuff.
- 7:08Speaker 4: But the first downs too, I still don't understand the
- 7:13Speaker 4: reluctance to ditch.
- 7:15Speaker 1: What are we doing?
- 7:16Speaker 4: Yeah, but anyway, you know, it's it's I think it.
- 7:21Speaker 2: It's just exacerbated by that they were so close.
- 7:24Speaker 4: I mean, they did everything right for most of that game,
- 7:28Speaker 4: especially defensively. I'm not sure Mahomes has been under that
- 7:32Speaker 4: kind of consistent four man pressures. I mean, they had
- 7:36Speaker 4: a three man pressure that got home. I mean they
- 7:39Speaker 4: they were on a heater yesterday. Everything they called on defense,
- 7:44Speaker 4: for the most part, was a win.
- 7:46Speaker 2: You know, they the Loan.
- 7:47Speaker 4: Touchdown, they give up jay Con McMillan, who slipped a
- 7:50Speaker 4: couple times this year, and coverage just slipped coming out
- 7:54Speaker 4: of his back pedal, you know, when he tried to
- 7:57Speaker 4: move to the ball. And you know, again, you would
- 8:00Speaker 4: think giving up one touchdown against the Chiefs would put
- 8:03Speaker 4: you in the ballpark, and it did put them in
- 8:05Speaker 4: the ballpark. And they handled the last drive. You know,
- 8:08Speaker 4: everything except the kick is perfect. They used up the clock.
- 8:12Speaker 4: I mean, there's nothing left there but the game winner.
- 8:16Speaker 3: All right, we're at the midway point of the season, right,
- 8:18Speaker 3: nine games now officially, or what was it the whole uh.
- 8:22Speaker 1: Half of halftime of the Baltimore's.
- 8:23Speaker 3: Right, I guess it's ten games sits now, they're.
- 8:25Speaker 2: Five and five.
- 8:27Speaker 3: Look, Lakey, here's my reason for asking this. From my
- 8:30Speaker 3: side of things. You know, there's still some stuff I
- 8:33Speaker 3: want to see Bownicks do better. Obviously, there's still some
- 8:37Speaker 3: accuracy stuff. I'd like to see her, some downfield stuff.
- 8:40Speaker 3: But man, that throw on third down to pick up
- 8:43Speaker 3: a first down. Guys have Wilton in that situation, I
- 8:46Speaker 3: thought he maybe had his best ball of the year
- 8:48Speaker 3: to Cortland Sutton on the touchdown. Where are you at
- 8:51Speaker 3: midpoint grade? If you will, probably should ask you a
- 8:53Speaker 3: week ago, but whatever our show midpoint grade?
- 8:56Speaker 2: What do you like?
- 8:57Speaker 3: What do you want to see fixed?
- 8:58Speaker 1: A little bit?
- 9:00Speaker 4: Think I think they've put so much on his plate
- 9:02Speaker 4: as footwork's just gonna have to wait now. They're probably not.
- 9:08Speaker 4: They probably think I make too big a deal of it.
- 9:10Speaker 4: But it's just my training over the years from coaches
- 9:14Speaker 4: and scouts who've helped me, you know, digest film and
- 9:18Speaker 4: evaluate players. But his footwork needs some need some addressing.
- 9:23Speaker 4: And that's, you know, perfectly natural when you go from
- 9:28Speaker 4: doing whatever you want as one of the best athletes
- 9:31Speaker 4: on the field in high school and college and then
- 9:33Speaker 4: you get to the NFL and you gotta you gotta.
- 9:36Speaker 2: Dial it in a little more. That's just the way
- 9:38Speaker 2: it is.
- 9:39Speaker 4: But I do you know, I like talking to bow about,
- 9:43Speaker 4: you know, his approach to things. I think he's got
- 9:46Speaker 4: a good perspective on where he is as a player,
- 9:49Speaker 4: and I do like that, and that is that's a
- 9:53Speaker 4: big deal in a in a developmental you know in
- 9:57Speaker 4: a developmental way, like he is honest with himself. He
- 10:01Speaker 4: knows what needs to happen moving forward. And even yesterday,
- 10:06Speaker 4: you know, he was one of the real you know,
- 10:10Speaker 4: as a young guy, he was one of the real
- 10:12Speaker 4: players to sort of stand up after that game and
- 10:15Speaker 4: just say, hey, you know, we want to be the team,
- 10:19Speaker 4: you know, making that last play to win.
- 10:21Speaker 2: And and you can't.
- 10:23Speaker 4: Stop until you are that team making that last play.
- 10:26Speaker 4: And I thought that was an important thing. And and
- 10:30Speaker 4: you know, I know it's a loss, and everybody's mad,
- 10:32Speaker 4: and you know, I see the stuff when when you
- 10:36Speaker 4: know the the prop bes don't work out for people.
- 10:40Speaker 2: Uh, there's a lot of angst with that.
- 10:42Speaker 4: I did it, but I thought I've been in a
- 10:45Speaker 4: lot of locker rooms over the years. I thought that
- 10:48Speaker 4: one handled a crushing loss just about as as well
- 10:53Speaker 4: as you can. I mean, they they understood what it was,
- 10:58Speaker 4: but they also understood their still sort of the number
- 11:01Speaker 4: seven seed in the AFC, you know, as they wake
- 11:05Speaker 4: up this morning and they play the two teams behind
- 11:07Speaker 4: them in the weeks ahead.
- 11:10Speaker 1: Jeff, we got one minute here. But earlier this season,
- 11:13Speaker 1: Sean Payton lamented the challenge of getting three different backs carries.
- 11:18Speaker 1: Now he's using four different backs with Estimate up and
- 11:22Speaker 1: Marvin Mims now being used in the backfield. What gives
- 11:24Speaker 1: with the run game?
- 11:26Speaker 4: I think Estimay is gonna get more work moving forward.
- 11:29Speaker 4: That's just my gut. I mean, that's that's the way
- 11:32Speaker 4: they're now. He said that today again, he said today
- 11:35Speaker 4: he's gonna Estimate is gonna get more touches.
- 11:38Speaker 2: Now, we'll see.
- 11:38Speaker 4: He said that before and it hasn't come to fruition
- 11:42Speaker 4: for some guys, but they have practiced that way last week.
- 11:47Speaker 2: We'll see what this week looks like. But I think
- 11:50Speaker 2: they like Estimate's decisiveness.
- 11:53Speaker 4: You know, I think the stat line looks a lot
- 11:55Speaker 4: different if that seventeen yard carry holds up when Ben
- 11:59Speaker 4: pos was called for a whole So yeah, I think
- 12:03Speaker 4: they like his decisiveness between the hash marks, and that's
- 12:06Speaker 4: where they can if they can get a run game
- 12:09Speaker 4: in there. You watch the kind of room that creates
- 12:12Speaker 4: for bon Nicks and that they need something in between
- 12:16Speaker 4: the hash marks in the run game. And then suddenly
- 12:20Speaker 4: the quarterback to the perimeter is going to be a
- 12:22Speaker 4: big deal.
- 12:24Speaker 1: Yeah, es to me, it looks like a fresher, younger
- 12:26Speaker 1: version of Javonte Williams. Jeff Legwald everyone ESPN, go to
