- 0:00One hundred fourteen dollars and eighty nine cents.
- 0:03That is where European Brent crude settled, right on the screen from the Saint Louis
- 0:07Fed database, while prompt WTI is holding firm north of ninety three dollars.
- 0:13And you know, if you look at the paper market, it just looks like wild,
- 0:16runaway momentum, but the plumbing underneath is screaming.
- 0:20The International Energy Agency put out their numbers showing that,
- 0:24well, as more than 10 mb/d of Gulf output remained shut in amid heightened security
- 0:30risks, the world has burned through five hundred seven million barrels of observed
- 0:34oil inventories since February.
- 0:37Think about that volume.
- 0:40That is nearly three million barrels every single day pulled out of storage tanks
- 0:45just to keep the lights on and refineries fed.
- 0:48Because that sweet barrel deficit in the Atlantic Basin is so violent,
- 0:52European buyers are pulling every uncommitted physical molecule eastward across the
- 0:56water.
- 0:57But then you look north across our border, and the picture flips on its head.
- 1:02Western Canadian Select up at Hardisty just blew out thirty five cents wider in the
- 1:06last twenty four hours.
- 1:07It is trading at sixteen dollars under WTI.
- 1:11Why?
- 1:12Because Enbridge Mainline is choking under heavy apportionment,
- 1:15and our Midwest refiners are stepping into scheduled fall turnarounds.
- 1:19They do not want the heavy barrel right now.
- 1:22And down south, Mexico's Pemex keeps squeezing waterborne Maya crude exports out of
- 1:26the market to run test batches through their Dos Bocas Olmeca plant.
- 1:30So if you are a complex coking refinery on the Gulf Coast, you are starving for
- 1:35heavy sour feed, but you cannot easily get the Canadian crude down there without
- 1:39paying through the nose for pipe space.
- 1:41Meanwhile, the Energy Information Administration dropped their Short Term Energy
- 1:45Outlook, and they are explicitly warning that, as they put it,
- 1:48We forecast U.S.
- 1:50distillate fuel oil inventories will drop below 100 million barrels in September.
- 1:55Below one hundred million barrels!
- 1:57We are heading into harvest season and home heating demand with diesel stocks
- 2:00scraping multiyear lows, just as domestic refinery utilization drops toward ninety
- 2:05one percent for maintenance.
- 2:07And the epicenter, Cushing, Oklahoma, is sitting pinned at twenty two million
- 2:12barrels.
- 2:14If you have ever worked near a tank farm, twenty two million barrels does not mean
- 2:18plenty of oil.
- 2:19That is essentially operational tank bottoms.
- 2:23I remember years ago on a physical scheduling desk, watching the terminal gauge drop
- 2:28toward dead storage.
- 2:30When the liquid level falls too low, the suction head vanishes,
- 2:34the massive centrifugal pumps begin to cavitate, rattling like a coffee can full of
- 2:39bolts, and the pipeline operators literally cut you off at the manifold.
- 2:44If you are holding paper barrels without firm physical outlet right now,
- 2:48Cushing is not a refuge, it is a trap.
- 2:51Now, let us trace those physical barrels upstream into the Rockies,
- 2:55because the logistical squeeze out here is turning into an absolute clinic on basis
- 3:00risk.
- 3:01Take Utah's Uinta Basin.
- 3:02The yellow wax crude coming out of the ground there is prized by Gulf Coast fluid
- 3:06catalytic crackers, commanding a three dollar and twenty cent premium over WTI.
- 3:11Refiners love it.
- 3:13But getting it out?
- 3:14That is another story entirely.
- 3:16The local Salt Lake City refineries have trimmed their crude runs below eighty
- 3:20thousand barrels per day for seasonal overhauls.
- 3:22And that eighty five mile rail project, the Uinta Basin Railway,
- 3:26is still tangled up in federal appellate court proceedings.
- 3:29So producers like Ovintiv, SM Energy, and XCL Resources cannot just turn a valve.
- 3:35Yellow wax solidifies at room temperature, it turns into something resembling a
- 3:38candle.
- 3:39So they are biting the bullet, coughing up sixteen to eighteen dollars a barrel in
- 3:43rail tariffs for specialized, steam coiled, insulated railcars just to bypass the
- 3:48Wasatch Front and roll those barrels south.
- 3:50It sounds extreme, but when the spread pays, the crude moves on rails.
- 3:55Further north in North Dakota, the Williston Basin is holding steady at one point
- 3:58nineteen million barrels per day.
- 4:00The state reported gas capture compliance reached ninety five point eight percent,
- 4:04which is remarkable discipline.
- 4:06But pipeline takeaway is essentially tapped out.
- 4:09Dakota Access is humming near nameplate capacity, so incremental volumes are also
- 4:13jumping onto railcars to catch strong pricing in the Pacific Northwest refineries.
- 4:18Over in Wyoming's Powder River Basin, operators like Anschutz,
- 4:21EOG, and Continental are pushing fresh light sweet crude straight into the Belle
- 4:25Fourche system.
- 4:26They have to hurry because, as RBN Energy pointed out in their analysis,
- 4:31The Double H pipeline is slated for conversion to NGL service by Q1 2026.
- 4:37Once that eighty eight thousand barrel per day line flips to natural gas liquids,
- 4:42Guernsey becomes an even bigger bottleneck.
- 4:44And Guernsey sweet crude shows it.
- 4:47In the last twenty four hours, Guernsey spiked another ten cents,
- 4:51trading at an eighty five cent premium over Cushing and two dollars and ten cents
- 4:55over Clearbrook.
- 4:57Clearbrook itself sank to one dollar and twenty five cents under WTI.
- 5:02Why is Guernsey commanding such a massive local premium?
- 5:06Because Tallgrass Energy's system data confirms that Current capacity out of
- 5:10Guernsey is 230,000 barrels per day on the Pony Express Pipeline,
- 5:14and it is in heavy proration.
- 5:17Add in Plains All American's Cowboy Pipeline connector to Saddlehorn,
- 5:21which is locked up with a twenty five thousand barrel per day pinch point,
- 5:25and suddenly shippers cannot push barrels south to the hub.
- 5:29If you do not own firm pipe space, your crude gets stranded in Guernsey tanks,
- 5:34racking up terminal storage fees or forcing you onto expensive rail.
- 5:38The barrel may be worth ninety three dollars in Cushing, but if it cannot get past
- 5:42the manifold in Wyoming, that paper price is just a mirage.
- 5:46Catch you next time.
