Latest / Sri Aurobindo Studies / The Spiritual Aspirant Marches to the Beat of a Different Drummer Than Those Who Focus on the External Life
Transcript
- 0:00The spiritual aspirant necessarily has to change the
- 0:04way things have been historically and habitually done
- 0:06in the world if he is to make progress and move beyond the
- 0:11limitations imposed by the body, life, mind, complex and all the
- 0:16traditions, rituals, habits, fixed ideas and vital emotional
- 0:22responses that make up the current state of human life and
- 0:27society. While much of what he
- 0:29experiences, thinks and expresses may not seem
- 0:33threatening to others, there is no doubt that at some point the
- 0:37world will respond, and to the extent humanity tries to
- 0:41maintain the status quo, it will pass negative judgement on him.
- 0:46Thus we see the long history of visionary leaders around the
- 0:50world subjected to torture, death, crucifixion,
- 0:55excommunication, and ostracism. Rare are those individuals or
- 1:02those societies that embrace the vision and support the changes
- 1:06that are required. Many such visionaries are
- 1:09appreciated and honored only after they are long gone and the
- 1:13changes for which they were advocates have begun to seep
- 1:17into the wider mind and heart of humanity.
- 1:22On a more personal level, the spiritual aspirant frequently
- 1:26finds that his friends, family, peers simply do not understand
- 1:31the experience that is moving him in a direction other than
- 1:36their expected and anticipated. 1 He may shun the normal career
- 1:41paths, the normal relationship paths, as he follows the deeper
- 1:46aspiration that has awakened in him.
- 1:49They may treat him as psychologically unhinged and
- 1:52suggest he get counselling from a psychiatrist.
- 1:56They may try to exert peer pressure and let him know with
- 2:00all their tried and true arguments and emotional bonds
- 2:04that he is making a mistake, throwing away his life, wasting
- 2:08his time. It is said that day for those
- 2:13living the ordinary life is night for the Yogi and vice
- 2:17versa. Thus, those who are not actively
- 2:22pursuing spiritual practice do not have either the knowledge or
- 2:26the experience to judge or comment on the experience of the
- 2:30yogic aspirant. Uninformed opinion is generally
- 2:35not a reliable basis upon which to make decisions.
- 2:40It must also be noted that the goals and objectives of the
- 2:43ordinary external life are necessarily focused on short
- 2:47term results, success, fame, wealth, pleasure and enjoyment,
- 2:54while the goals and objectives of the spiritual secret
- 2:57transcend these short term aims. And thus the opinions of those
- 3:02who live for near term results are not likely to have much, if
- 3:06any relevance for the spiritual aspirant.
- 3:10The spiritual aspirant can see and understand, if he even
- 3:14chooses to attend to them, the ways of the world.
- 3:18He recognizes that these ways are based in a very limited
- 3:22understanding of the deeper significance of existence and
- 3:27are mainly developed through the habitual, vital and mental
- 3:30habits, instincts and native reactions that have created the
- 3:35current stage of development. He need not be too concerned
- 3:39about any particular set of circumstances or events as he
- 3:44sets his sights on the spiritual evolutionary movement that will
- 3:48inevitably carry himself and humanity beyond the limitations
- 3:53of the present mode of existence.
