- 0:16Hi and welcome to the Curve Weekly, the podcast that keeps you up to date with all the
- 0:20money, business and stock market tea.
- 0:23And they're exactly what I needed to do, but it would take money to get there.
- 0:26Show me the money!
- 0:28For the record, feminism by definition is the belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities.
- 0:35Everyone should experience for us at least once in their lives, and Annie shouldn't miss out
- 0:39just because she can't afford it.
- 0:41Help me, I'm poor.
- 0:43I'm the most mumsy, mumsy, mumsy weekend.
- 0:47I did my washing and I went for walks and I made food for the week.
- 0:53Like I've got absolutely no exciting news for you.
- 0:56I'm kind of jealous.
- 0:57I had the complete opposite.
- 0:59I had a wild...
- 1:02That was an hour late for a podcast record.
- 1:05I've just been sitting in the house.
- 1:07I, yeah.
- 1:08Almost kind of...
- 1:09Tell me some highlights.
- 1:10Where did you go?
- 1:11It's just not podcast.
- 1:12Really?
- 1:13Friendly.
- 1:14Worthy.
- 1:15It's definitely podcast.
- 1:16Worthy.
- 1:17Just maybe not podcast friendly.
- 1:18No, yes.
- 1:19You just have to beep out the whole episode.
- 1:21Oh my god.
- 1:22Now I want to know.
- 1:25Tell me off like...
- 1:26Yep.
- 1:27Okay, great.
- 1:28Sorry, listeners.
- 1:29I think we're going to have to...
- 1:31Yeah.
- 1:32It's so awkward, isn't it?
- 1:33Oh, we're not on a date last weekend into the bush.
- 1:35Like full bush vibes.
- 1:36On to Great Barrier.
- 1:37And when I was there, the guy that I was there with was like,
- 1:40Oh, my brothers...
- 1:41Um, girlfriend listens to the podcast and I was like,
- 1:43Shit.
- 1:44Shit.
- 1:45Note to sound.
- 1:47And then she walked on and I was having sex.
- 1:50What?
- 1:51I don't get the joke.
- 1:52No, I just made up.
- 1:53Oh, okay.
- 1:54You know they didn't have it in time.
- 1:55Oh.
- 1:56Um, you've just...
- 1:58It's sort of a reminder that you sort of talk into these microphones
- 2:02thinking no one's listening.
- 2:03I know.
- 2:04And then someone's like, Hey.
- 2:05Oh my god.
- 2:06It's so great to learn about finance and your sex life.
- 2:09And you're like...
- 2:10Oh.
- 2:11And then I was at a party in the weekend and the boys were like,
- 2:15Oh my god, are we going to make it on the podcast?
- 2:17Are we going to be conning you going to say how much of a fun party you're here?
- 2:20Oh, I was like, Oh my god.
- 2:23I was like, Do you think people are going to start not wanting to hang out of us
- 2:26because they're worried that they're going to end up?
- 2:28I think we're going to be like, Oh my god, can we hang out with you
- 2:30so that we can be on the podcast?
- 2:31No, I was meaning like, people don't want their shit.
- 2:34Dirty laundry again.
- 2:35It on, you know, as I say, National Radio, which is absolutely...
- 2:39But do you know what I mean?
- 2:41Like, surely there's people that are really like, Oh, fuck, don't touch soap
- 2:43or the tin, but we'll be in there.
- 2:44It's like a Taylor Swift.
- 2:45Yeah.
- 2:46Oh my god.
- 2:47Do you know how the weed Taylor Swift?
- 2:48Oh my god.
- 2:49No wonder I'm not getting any action.
- 2:52Okay, so the S&P 500 was up, had a good week last week.
- 2:56Up 2.1%.
- 2:57So this is the top 500 companies in the US.
- 3:01Hey, don't talk to people like this silly.
- 3:03Sorry, no, I thought you were going to say it with me
- 3:05and we were going to say it in unison, but you didn't pick up on that.
- 3:09So...
- 3:10And the NASDAQ actually had a really fantastic week.
- 3:13It's up 6.5% for one week, which is quite amazing.
- 3:166.5%?
- 3:17Yes.
- 3:18Yeah, it's going.
- 3:19Yeah, it's going to be something.
- 3:20Yeah.
- 3:21Sorry.
- 3:22The ASCX was down 2% and good old New Zealand was flat.
- 3:27That's all right.
- 3:28That's fine.
- 3:29We're fine.
- 3:30We're not dipping.
- 3:31That's the main thing.
- 3:32We're not going up and not going down.
- 3:33We're just flatlining.
- 3:34But the big news this week and kind of the end of last week as well
- 3:37was all around.
- 3:39Thanks.
- 3:40Yay.
- 3:41So you got this one so you got this one.
- 3:43Yeah, it's all about banks.
- 3:45We had SVB, which is Silicon Valley Bank, which you spoke about last week on the podcast.
- 3:51And that collapse of that bank to small regional US bank, then the bigger news that's come out this week is Credit Swiss, which is massive.
- 4:00It's three times the size of SVB.
- 4:02It's a Swiss bank.
- 4:03It's got about 800 billion dollars of assets.
- 4:06So it's like huge.
- 4:08And it's been in trouble for a while.
- 4:10It's had a lot of scandals.
- 4:11It's had a lot of issues.
- 4:13Fraud.
- 4:14Like it's kind of...
- 4:16Yeah, it's been in the toilet for a while.
- 4:18The share price has not done very well.
- 4:20But last week it came into kind of more serious issues.
- 4:23And it's share price fell 24%.
- 4:25Ooh.
- 4:26So last week it was down 18% in one week.
- 4:31This is quite major.
- 4:32And I think the issue with this is it's a big global bank.
- 4:34Whereas SVB was pretty...
- 4:36Oh, isolated.
- 4:37Yeah, it was the US, which still affects a whole lot of businesses and reverberates around the world.
- 4:42But Credit Swiss...
- 4:43It's been around forever.
- 4:44It's a 160-year-old company.
- 4:46So it's been around forever.
- 4:47Anyway, it's got into troubles and it got announced just recently, actually, that UBS, which is another global investment bank in Switzerland.
- 4:56I hate all the stupid fucking ABCs, ESP, MAJs.
- 5:01It's just like...
- 5:02It has debt.
- 5:03Yeah, there's a lot of acronyms.
- 5:04I don't know that one.
- 5:05So there are another Swiss bank.
- 5:07They're the biggest Swiss bank.
- 5:08It's kind of Credit Swiss in UBS, they're like the two.
- 5:11And they've announced that they're going to buy out Credit Swiss.
- 5:16Is that a good thing for $3 billion?
- 5:18Whoa.
- 5:19But it's share price.
- 5:21Sorry, it's the market cap of the company.
- 5:22So the size of the company is $7 billion.
- 5:25So investors are getting...
- 5:28Oh.
- 5:29Like they're getting a really, really shit deal.
- 5:31But it's kind of like when companies on its knees, it's like, well...
- 5:35What alternative do you have?
- 5:37And the Swiss banks also helping UBS by kind of funding it as well
- 5:41and giving it liquidity and helping out with the transactions.
- 5:44So this is another example, though, of business that's taking a lot of risk
- 5:49and then it just gets bailed out by the government.
- 5:51And it's like, but...
- 5:52I don't love it.
- 5:53No.
- 5:54But the government's got to balance, okay, do we let this bank fail?
- 5:58And the...
- 6:00You know, fly on a fix that's going to have.
- 6:02Or do we save it and save the entire financial ecosystem?
- 6:08So...
- 6:09But, yeah, I think this will be a really big wake up call.
- 6:12Credit Swiss, NSVB, all around regulation in the industry and more regulation.
- 6:17Which is good for investors and good for just confidence and stability.
- 6:22Because if you're banking with a bank, if you're a company, if you're an individual,
- 6:26if you're, you know, anything, you want to have confidence that you're investing in a not risky place,
- 6:34you know, you're investing in a safe place and you can get your money out.
- 6:37So...
- 6:38I mean, there were some messages we got, like, people joking, being like,
- 6:41I'm going to put all my money under the mattress.
- 6:43Oh, yeah.
- 6:44But actually, I think why people would be freaked out?
- 6:48Because there are so many companies, there are so many countries around the world
- 6:53where they just don't trust their banking system.
- 6:55No, exactly.
- 6:56And that's why Bitcoins become so popular in kind of developing countries
- 7:02because they don't trust the banking system.
- 7:04They put the money in the bank and it's got a really unstable economic environment as well
- 7:09in their countries, which then leads itself to super high inflation.
- 7:12Or, you know, like, it's just, so your money just gets whittled away.
- 7:16Now, I know we're all sick of hearing others.
- 7:18It's the I word, isn't it?
- 7:19It's the I word.
- 7:20No, you know what?
- 7:22It's not the I word, but God, the I word could fit in there as well.
- 7:25Yeah, it's an inflation.
- 7:27If an inflation...
- 7:28Yes, we've had some more inflation data come out last week.
- 7:33It's not good news.
- 7:34Okay.
- 7:35Sorry, grab your tissues.
- 7:36No, I'm not going to cry over it, but I'd like to understand why.
- 7:39Yes.
- 7:40Well, have I got news for you?
- 7:43No, so we had European data, inflation data is nearly 9%.
- 7:49So it's pretty, pretty stubborn over there.
- 7:52And in the US, it's at 6%.
- 7:54So it's not as bad.
- 7:55It's a European is the worst.
- 7:57Yep.
- 7:58Why on earth would we go over to London, babe?
- 8:00I know.
- 8:01So can I even think of doing a stint over there in like winter New Zealand?
- 8:04But, shit.
- 8:05I know.
- 8:06Does that mean life's going to be like outrageous expense for us?
- 8:08It's going to be 8% more expensive than last year.
- 8:11So when you were there last year, it's going to be 8%.
- 8:13Oh, I'm going to have serious budget because I was just...
- 8:16Oh, we've got one of those.
- 8:18Shit, that's actually quite scary to think about though.
- 8:20Yeah.
- 8:21And because the optimal inflation range is 2% to 3%.
- 8:24So that's kind of the sign of a healthy economy it's growing,
- 8:27but not too fast.
- 8:28Whereas 8%.
- 8:308%, 10%.
- 8:32Because I remember reading in the Curve Weekly the email
- 8:34that you send out every Friday.
- 8:36If you're not getting it due, because it's so good.
- 8:38But you said basically the way to think about inflation
- 8:41is whatever it is to say, for example, it's 8% now in the UK.
- 8:45It means that this time last year everything is 8% more expensive now
- 8:50than it was a year ago.
- 8:52So if you've got money sitting in the bank,
- 8:54don't earning nothing, then you can now afford 8% less
- 8:58because your money is not growing.
- 9:00But the price of everything you're buying is...
- 9:03So if a healthy inflation rate is 2% to 3%,
- 9:06does that mean that everything is going to continue to grow
- 9:09in terms of it's going to be more expensive every year
- 9:12but just by small increments?
- 9:14Is that just the way that the economy works?
- 9:16It's not going to stay the same in terms of what money is worth now.
- 9:20It won't be the worth the same in 10 years.
- 9:22And because of that 2%, 3%, that helps people spend,
- 9:26but not too much.
- 9:27You're like, oh, well, everything's kind of increasing at inflation.
- 9:32So my salary is increasing therefore I can afford more things.
- 9:35Whereas if state inflation was going backwards,
- 9:38then people would be like, well, why would I buy it today?
- 9:40Because it's going to be cheaper.
- 9:42Next month or next year.
- 9:44So therefore nobody spends anything, nobody consumes anything,
- 9:49businesses don't grow, businesses aren't selling anything.
- 9:51So 2 to 3% is that kind of natural.
- 9:54You know, let's move forward, but let's not sprint.
- 9:57Let's keep chugging along, but let's not get out of control.
- 10:00Yeah, that makes sense.
- 10:01So it's kind of like if you haven't had a pay rise this year,
- 10:05then you've effectively kind of had,
- 10:08if you're in Europe, an 8% paid cut.
- 10:10So should you be basically asking,
- 10:12should you be going to your boss every year and saying,
- 10:15hey, inflation's at this.
- 10:16So I want to keep, I want my salary to increase to this
- 10:19just so it can stay in line with inflation.
- 10:21But then I also want to 5 grand pay rise because I'm a legend.
- 10:24Because of that, this is, you should be asking for pay rise
- 10:27or at least a pay review.
- 10:29You know, some people might be really shitter their jobs.
- 10:32That's not really really good.
- 10:34But you should be having a pay review.
- 10:38What?
- 10:39Just laughing at you saying people might really shitter their jobs.
- 10:41Do you think someone knows if they should at their job?
- 10:44Well, surely.
- 10:47Probably.
- 10:48What do you think, sir?
- 10:49But that's why it's good to have these yearly reviews
- 10:51or pay discussion at least so that your boss can be like,
- 10:55well, you're not doing this, this, this.
- 10:56So go and do that and then come back to me and we'll have a talk about it.
- 10:59Whereas if you go in and you're like, look,
- 11:01I've done this, this.
- 11:02And inflation is up 8%.
- 11:06Can I get a 10% pay rise?
- 11:08Please.
- 11:09You know, it's a much easier conversation than just going in there
- 11:11being a shit employee and saying, but my life's got way more expensive.
- 11:14So pay me more.
- 11:17The other thing with inflation is it's really important to realise
- 11:20and I don't think many people know this is what makes up inflation.
- 11:23So it is the increasing price of goods.
- 11:27But goods is everything from products and services.
- 11:31What we're seeing and why inflation isn't coming down,
- 11:35because the way that you reduce inflation is by increasing interest rates.
- 11:39But the reason it's not coming back down to that two to three percent
- 11:43is the services part of inflation.
- 11:46So it's basically what you're saying that inflation isn't just a whole number.
- 11:50It's not just inflation's at 10% and that's the money, the value of a dollar.
- 11:55It's actually, if you look at that inflation number,
- 11:58it's made up of many different aspects of the economy.
- 12:01Of products, sorry, of goods and services.
- 12:04So what do you spend your money on?
- 12:06Food, fuel.
- 12:07Right.
- 12:08So all that.
- 12:09Anything that people spend money on.
- 12:10Anything that be insurance, books, shows, food, candles, houses, condoms.
- 12:15Condoms.
- 12:16So all of that is what makes up the...
- 12:20So it's the demand and the...
- 12:24I can't remember that.
- 12:26Why is it getting...
- 12:28Why is all of those things what makes...
- 12:30Because there's more people purchasing those goods,
- 12:35therefore the price increases, but the supply is still the same.
- 12:39And so you're saying that some of the things that people are buying are in more demand.
- 12:43So some parts of what people are spending money on are being more stubborn
- 12:47when it comes to the inflation number.
- 12:49Yes, and that's why the services group is, which makes up,
- 12:54which is made up of travel, entertainment, hospitality, all that kind of stuff,
- 13:00is driving.
- 13:02That's the main driver of why inflation is staying at these higher levels
- 13:05because we've all been locked up for three years.
- 13:08We're all demanding activities or we want to go traveling.
- 13:13Dinner is all that.
- 13:14Yeah.
- 13:15They actually want to spend money on fun stuff.
- 13:17Yes, and there's still the same amount of fun stuff,
- 13:20there's lots more people wanting to do it, all of a sudden.
- 13:23And so that's what is being...
- 13:25That's what is keeping inflation at higher levels.
- 13:28So can we do anything as consumers to bring it down?
- 13:31Just stay home.
- 13:32Really?
- 13:33I go into a self-imposed lockdown.
- 13:35Yeah.
- 13:36Which is probably going to be good for you.
- 13:38I kind of do that as well.
- 13:39So it's just a case of that kind of stuff will eventually come down.
- 13:44Travel, for example, with more planes come online,
- 13:47more pilots get hired, people got the travel bug out of their system
- 13:52and might delay that holiday till next year, rather than this year.
- 13:56But then that will ease that portion of the services portion
- 14:00of the overall inflation.
- 14:01So you just want all things to come down a little bit
- 14:05and that services category,
- 14:07and then that will have a positive impact on the overall inflation.
- 14:10So stop eating out everybody, stop buying things you like.
- 14:14Sit home, sit on your F-post card.
- 14:17And have a really boring life.
- 14:19Yes.
- 14:20Just talk to your cat.
- 14:21Yes.
- 14:22Watch TV.
- 14:23Be Taylor Swift with her cats.
- 14:24Mm-hmm.
- 14:25Yeah.
- 14:26It would probably be what it's like to be famous, you know,
- 14:28because you probably couldn't leave your house and go to a restaurant
- 14:30and I can't tell you.
- 14:31And in the palava of going to...
- 14:32I think it's palava.
- 14:33If anyone knows it's palava or palava.
- 14:35You know when you say word to me at home,
- 14:37it just sounds really weird out there.
- 14:38Yeah.
- 14:39Sorry, I'll stop.
- 14:40So it's basically not been a particularly positive week.
- 14:43No, it hasn't.
- 14:44I mean the market is up.
- 14:46But overall news, it's been, you know,
- 14:49pretty choppy out there, pretty volatile.
- 14:51So if we were a sailboat, we may be sinking.
- 14:54We would be...
- 14:56We would have waves crashing over.
- 14:58Yep.
- 14:59I was in a boat in the weekend.
- 15:01And yes, there's lots of waves crashing over.
- 15:04Was it choppy?
- 15:05Very dreamt.
- 15:06Very windy.
- 15:07Yeah, very windy.
- 15:08Okay, so it's windy as hell and it's quite a little bit wet.
- 15:11Yeah, but the calm waters are on the horizon.
- 15:14Do we need to just all put some rain jackets on?
- 15:16Yes.
- 15:17And brave the elements.
- 15:19No, the storm will pass.
- 15:21Yes.
- 15:22Gosh, we're great.
- 15:23That was a such a good analogy.
- 15:25Oh, and on that note, we're going to wrap that up.
- 15:28It's going to have a sleep recover from her 3-day vendor.
- 15:32I did not have a 3-day vendor.
- 15:34But we're really excited to have partnered with Audi
