Vox Liturgica: The propers of the day according to the Roman Missal before 1955. The dedication of Our Lady of the Snow, August 5 in the year of our Lord 2026.

Of today's feast, Dom Prosper Guerrenger writes the following. Rome, delivered from slavery by Peter on the first of this month, offers to the world a wonderful spectacle. She who formerly imposed her iron yoke on all nations now sees them at her feet adoring the name of the Lord.

The false gods who had shared with her the empire of the world are now in their turn under her feet while she herself is the servant of the true God. Hast thou entered, says the Lord to Job, into the storehouses of the snow, or hast thou beheld the treasures of the hail which I have prepared for the time of the enemy against the day of battle and war? On the August 5 then, at God's command, the treasures were opened and the snow was scattered like birds alighting upon the earth. And its coming was the signal for the lightnings of his judgment upon the gods of the nations. The deserted pantheon awaited the day when it was to receive the noble and magnificent name of Saint Mary Agmartires.

What a preparation for thy glorious assumption is the series of earthly triumphs which this day inaugurates. The Basilica Of Saint Mary Of The Snow called also of Liberius from its founder, and also of Sixtus after Sixtus the third who restored it, owed to this last the honor of becoming the monument of divine maternity proclaimed at Ephesus. The name of Saint Mary mother, which it received on that occasion, became under Theodore the first who enriched it with the most precious relic, Saint Mary of the crib. All these noble titles were afterwards gathered into that of Saint Mary major, which is amply justified by the facts we have related by universal devotion, and by the preeminence always assigned to it by the sovereign pontiffs. According to the ancient account, on the knowns of August, August 5, usually the hottest time of the year in Rome, a part of the Esquiline Hill was covered with snow during the night.

That same night, the mother of God appeared in a dream to John the patrician and his wife separately and told them to build a church on the spot they should find covered with snow and to dedicate it to the Virgin Mary for it was in this manner that she wished to become their heiress. John brought the news to Pope Liberius who affirmed that he experienced the same dream. In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost. Amen. The introit.

Hail, holy parent, that did spring forth the king who ruleth heaven and earth for ever and ever. My heart hath uttered a good word. I speak of my works to the king. Glory be to the father, and to the son, and to the Holy Ghost, as it was in the beginning is now and will be through all ages of ages. Amen.
• 4:32
Hail holy parent that did spring forth the king who ruleth heaven and earth for ever and ever. The Collect. Let us pray. Grant to us thy servants, we beseech Thee, O Lord, that we may enjoy perpetual health of mind and body, and through the intercession of blessed Mary, ever Virgin, may be delivered from present sorrow and possess eternal joy through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen.

A lesson from the wisdom of Sirach. At the beginning of time, before the world was, I was created and to all eternity I shall not cease to be, mine to minister before him in his holy dwelling. So according to his word, I made Zion my stronghold, the holy city my resting place, Jerusalem my throne. My roots spread out among the people that enjoy his favor. My God has granted me a share in his own domain where his faithful servants are gathered there I love to linger.
• 6:18
The gradual, blessed and venerable art thou, O Virgin Mary, who without loss of purity, wert found to be the mother of our Savior, Virgin Mother of God, he whom the whole world cannot hold, enclosed himself in thy womb and became man. Alleluia. Alleluia. After his birth, a virgin entire thou didst remain. O Mother of God, intercede for us.
• 6:56
Alleluia. A continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Luke. At that time Jesus was speaking to the crowd. A woman in the multitude said to him aloud, Blessed is the womb that bore thee, the breast which thou hast sucked. And he said, shall we not say, blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it?
• 7:30
The offertory. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. The secret. By thy gracious mercy, O Lord, in the intercession of blessed Mary ever Virgin, may this offering be of avail to us for welfare and peace now and forevermore through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages.
• 8:19
Amen. The Preface of Our Lady. It is truly meet and just, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto thee, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, everlasting God, and that we should praise and bless and proclaim thee in the festivity of blessed Mary ever Virgin, who also conceived thine only begotten Son by the overshadowing of the Holy Ghost in the glory of her virginity still abiding, gave forth to the world the everlasting light, Jesus Christ, our Lord, through whom the angels praise thy majesty, the dominions worship it, the powers stand in awe. The heavens and the heavenly hosts, together with the blessed Seraphim, in triumphant chorus, unite to celebrate it. Together with them we entreat thee that thou mayest bid our voices also to be admitted while we say with humble praise.
• 9:38
Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts. The heavens and the earth are full of thy glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.
• 10:02
The Communion. Blessed is the womb of the Virgin Mary which bore the Son of the Eternal Father. The post communion. Let us pray. Having received, O Lord, these aids unto salvation, Grant we beseech thee that we may be everywhere protected by the intercession of blessed Mary ever Virgin, in whose honor we have offered this sacrifice to thy majesty through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages.
• 10:53
Amen. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen. Remember, oh most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thine intercession was left unaided. Inspired with this confidence, we fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, our mother.
• 11:28
To thee do we come, before thee we kneel, sinful and sorrowful. O mother of the word incarnate, despise not our petitions, but in thy clemency, hear and answer them. Amen. Our Lady of the Snows, pray for us.
