- 0:45SPEAKER_00: All right, everyone, welcome to this week's episode of Epic Entrepreneurs.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: I am Cliff McCrae with Action Coach Business Growth Partners, where we work with local business owners to turn big ideas into real scalable growth.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: Today I'm excited to be joined by Ryan and Bob Parrish.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: Guys, how are you guys doing today?
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: I'm doing fantastic.
- 1:05SPEAKER_02: It is another wonderful day.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: Wonderful, wonderful.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: And you guys own uh is it RestoPros of Cotabba uh Valley, correct?
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: Correct.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: Catawba Valley.
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: Cotabba Valley, okay.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: Yep, sorry about that.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah, perfect, perfect.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: So, you know, kind of tell me a little bit about what you guys got going on.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: I mean, what are you guys providing for the community with Resta Pros of Cotabba Valley?
- 1:28SPEAKER_01: Well, we uh we try to be a one-stop shop for the most part.
- 1:32SPEAKER_01: If you have a situation where you have like a water heater blow up or toilet uh the the toilet flange or the wax ring go bad and and it starts uh leaking all over the floor and down into the basement, or if you've got an upstairs bathroom and it ends up in the the kitchen or the living room, then we pretty much try to get in there and uh do everything we can to get it cleaned up.
- 1:59SPEAKER_01: We work with all insurance companies.
- 2:02SPEAKER_01: We partner with contractors as far as plumbers, electricians, H VAC, uh, rebuild specialists, flooring guys.
- 2:12SPEAKER_01: Uh so we we are uh in essence a one-stop shop.
- 2:16SPEAKER_01: If you have a problem, we can we can get it fixed and we can put you in touch with the the the people that have the licenses to do the stuff that that we can't do.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: Perfect, perfect.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: Now uh and and who is who are Bob and Ryan Parrish?
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: It kind of lets you guys get into that.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: What do you guys got going on personally outside of work?
- 2:38SPEAKER_02: So uh I'll start.
- 2:39SPEAKER_02: I just got married this past weekend.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: So oh, congratulations.
- 2:43SPEAKER_02: Thank you, thank you.
- 2:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so I just got married.
- 2:47SPEAKER_02: That's kind of everything I got going on right now, honestly.
- 2:51SPEAKER_02: Haven't had time for much anything else.
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: No hobbies or anything like that?
- 2:56SPEAKER_02: I play a little bit of golf here and there.
- 2:57SPEAKER_02: I used to work at City Rock Country Club before I started working with dad.
- 3:04SPEAKER_02: And that's kind of how I started playing golf.
- 3:07SPEAKER_02: Before that, it was baseball.
- 3:09SPEAKER_02: But I was very fortunate enough I got to play college baseball for three years until uh injuries kind of took over, and that was the end of that road.
- 3:17SPEAKER_02: So that's that's kind of how I got started working for dad also.
- 3:22SPEAKER_02: I just received the news that I tore my labrum and have a partial tear of my rotator cuff.
- 3:28SPEAKER_02: And funny enough, I was sitting on the couch one day and dad just got home from a job, and he said, Well, you're not just gonna sit on the couch, you're gonna go to work because you're since you can't play baseball no more.
- 3:39SPEAKER_02: And he said, Why don't you just come work for me?
- 3:42SPEAKER_02: And we haven't looked back since.
- 3:46SPEAKER_01: Yep, and I've I've been told by several uh people my age and and other rest of pro franchises that I'm the luckiest man in the world because they would give their left arm to be able to have their son work with them doing this doing this kind of work.
- 4:06SPEAKER_01: And I I can honestly say I agree with them.
- 4:08SPEAKER_01: I I enjoy it heavily.
- 4:10SPEAKER_01: It's nice to uh have him alongside, somebody that I I I know that I can trust.
- 4:16SPEAKER_01: I know that they've they've got the same mindset that I've got and helping us to build this business into what we can build it into.
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: Nice.
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's cool, man.
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: That's and you guys get to spend some some time with each other too, so that's also good, you know, time that you guys can can look back on years from now and it's like, man, all that time we spent on work, laughing and having a good time, so that's pretty cool.
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: I know my dad would love to work with me.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: I know he would love that because it would it would mean more more time together.
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: And and he loves spending time with me.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: So he would love that.
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: So I'm sure that's a good thing for your for your dad, I'm sure.
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: But Bob, what made you leave your prior career path and choose restoration as the business where you wanted to build your next chapter?
- 4:59SPEAKER_01: So I was actually a vice president of operations for US1 Logistics Short Haul Division.
- 5:06SPEAKER_01: And after some time with there, I I decided to leave.
- 5:11SPEAKER_01: My mother-in-law that was sick, she had had some issues, and my daughter was graduating college, we were building a house, we we had a lot of things going on, and uh I traveled quite a bit with that with that position previously and decided, well, let's let's do something different.
- 5:31SPEAKER_01: So my mother-in-law had a stroke in in 2020, and then later on in that year, she she fell and broke her knee, and uh her health was declining just rapidly.
- 5:45SPEAKER_01: No idea why.
- 5:47SPEAKER_01: Just she went from uh being able to, you know, go take care of herself and and get in the car and and drive places and and uh go visit friends, things like that, run errands without any issues, to uh she had to have oxygen all the time.
- 6:03SPEAKER_01: And at that point in time, I was still I was I was still working with US 1 Logistics and I just got a situation where after she fell and she broke her knee, and my kids were having to stay with her alternating nights, and her her oldest son would would rotate in there as well.
- 6:28SPEAKER_01: Then we decided it was it was best for her to move in with us.
- 6:32SPEAKER_01: And at that same time, my then my daughter's boyfriend at that point, I don't they ended up getting engaged and married now, but at that point in time they were they were still dating.
- 6:46SPEAKER_01: He he was getting ready to graduate from NC State, and he uh ended up buying my mother-in-law's house, and he decided he was going to just basically remodel it while he lived there, which is uh it's painful enough, but was you know, single man on his own, you know, nobody else living with him.
- 7:05SPEAKER_01: He could go stay with his parents if it was a situation where he needed to.
- 7:09SPEAKER_01: And so as I was helping him one weekend, we tore out the kitchen, and there was it was not just mold, but if you think back to the, and you may not be old enough, and but you think back to the 70s where there used to be shag rug that was a really loose pile.
- 7:29SPEAKER_01: It was really tall.
- 7:30SPEAKER_01: And I remember my mother and my my grandmother always would would vacuum in a certain direction and they had permanent lines in the in the carpet.
- 7:41SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 7:42SPEAKER_01: And it it looked like that, except it was black.
- 7:45SPEAKER_01: And uh we dropped a screwdriver down on top of it and it went straight through the floor.
- 7:51SPEAKER_01: And I was like, that's not good.
- 7:53SPEAKER_01: We need to get some masks and we need to get out of here and then come back and tear the rest of this out.
- 7:59SPEAKER_01: And so we ended up tearing it all out.
- 8:01SPEAKER_01: Well, in the meantime, while my mother-in-law, as she lived with us for you know, several months, her health started improving.
- 8:10SPEAKER_01: So long story short, we found out real quick what what mold does to elderly people's health who may not be in the best uh physical condition or best medically, and it's it's it deteriorates the lungs, it deteriorates kidneys, the heart, all that stuff is all tied together.
- 8:34SPEAKER_01: And as she stayed with us, we noticed improvements and to the point where she went from six liters of oxygen 24-7 down to about three liters of oxygen 24-7.
- 8:46SPEAKER_01: And basically, we traced it all back to a dishwasher when it installed improperly.
- 8:54SPEAKER_01: Another water mitigation company previously came out and did the work improperly and left a bunch of moisture under the cabinets and under the floor, and that's what caused it.
- 9:08SPEAKER_01: That's what you know, we were able to isolate his back as to what the problem was.
- 9:13SPEAKER_01: And I decided at that point in time, I I I don't want anybody else to have to deal with the same stuff that that we've had to deal with because of that.
- 9:23SPEAKER_01: And that was what got me thinking into trying to get into a a water mitigation company.
- 9:31SPEAKER_01: And it just so by chance ended up getting into Restoprose.
- 9:36SPEAKER_01: And they're out of based out of Charlotte and Northern South Carolina, they're in Fort Mill.
- 9:43SPEAKER_01: And uh I liked the idea of having corporate close by if I needed help or needed any kind of backup or whatever, they were right there.
- 9:54SPEAKER_01: So it it it just went hand in hand, everything worked out, and I'm blessed to be where I am today because of because of past events, I guess the best way to put it.
- 10:04SPEAKER_01: But yeah, I I I hated the trail, but I wouldn't change it for the world.
- 10:09SPEAKER_00: Now, why did you choose the the the kind of a franchise, the RestaPros franchise model instead of building a restoration brand from scratch?
- 10:18SPEAKER_01: That's a very good question.
- 10:19SPEAKER_01: I've thought about that.
- 10:21SPEAKER_01: And I as I'm sitting here going through estimates and stuff at night and doing things, you know, that that thought runs through my head, but then I stand back and I I look at it.
- 10:31SPEAKER_01: At that point, when I when I first got into it, I'd had somewhat of a construction background.
- 10:37SPEAKER_01: We've built two houses through, I mean, obviously we had contractors, general contractors actually put the name on it, but we actually did a lot of the building ourselves.
- 10:46SPEAKER_01: I've finished off our basement at our old house.
- 10:50SPEAKER_01: We I've always been the kind of person, uh I grew up on a farm.
- 10:53SPEAKER_01: I've always been the kind of person that we can put it together.
- 10:57SPEAKER_01: It's it's not brain surgery, and I typically over-engineer things anyway, so we there's no danger of structural failures most of the time.
- 11:05SPEAKER_01: But I got to thinking about it, and the the best answer for that is there's so much you have to learn.
- 11:13SPEAKER_01: It's not just get in there and dry it.
- 11:16SPEAKER_01: The II CRC is is full of classes, and you can learn the classes, and you can learn the certifications, and you can you can figure out the rest, but nowhere does it say you need to have X amount of air movers, you need to have this many dehumidifiers, and you need this many types of dehumidifiers, and you need specific air scrubbers, and how often do you change the filters and the chemicals that work the best and all the special tools and the the guidance and the leadership, the all the way down to the programs with the CRM and the different estimating tools.
- 11:59SPEAKER_01: If I had just struck out and said, I'm gonna start a water mitigation company, probably could have muddled through the tools, I could have figured out how to get it done, I would have lacked with getting the correct CRM, and I would have really fallen short with the estimating tools.
- 12:16SPEAKER_01: And that's honestly, that's the uh that's the long and the short of it.
- 12:20SPEAKER_01: There's there's so much involved in it that you have to have guidance.
- 12:24SPEAKER_01: You can't just jump in.
- 12:26SPEAKER_00: That's definitely true.
- 12:27SPEAKER_00: Now, I know the business opened in late 2023, is that right?
- 12:31SPEAKER_01: That is correct.
- 12:32SPEAKER_01: We started up in October of 2023 and hit the ground running first thing in January and hadn't looked back since in 2024.
- 12:42SPEAKER_00: Okay, okay.
- 12:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so it looks like you're coming up on three years here.
- 12:45SPEAKER_00: So what did those first six months look like?
- 12:47SPEAKER_00: And what was harder than either of you expected?
- 12:50SPEAKER_01: Oh gosh, the first six months were a lot of filled with a lot of self-doubt.
- 12:56SPEAKER_01: Am I am I doing the right thing?
- 12:58SPEAKER_01: Am I am I going to be able to sustain the the issue is there's so many companies out here doing this, and some of them are not doing it correctly.
- 13:12SPEAKER_01: So for a company that's going to do it the right way and and not take advantage of customers and not try to gouge insurance companies and try to maintain everybody looks at you like you've got three heads.
- 13:27SPEAKER_01: And it's it's difficult to it's it's difficult to to get business until they start realizing that hey, he's he's not just another snake oil salesman, he's he's out here doing doing what he says he's doing.
- 13:43SPEAKER_02: So water tech before or not a water tech.
- 13:46SPEAKER_02: I was a water helper at the time.
- 13:49SPEAKER_02: And the the biggest struggle for me was and not to not to be a little gross, but was dealing with the raw sewage of people, the the raw sewage that would have that we would have to go clean up in the beginning.
- 14:02SPEAKER_02: It that was my biggest hurdle.
- 14:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 14:06SPEAKER_00: Okay, okay.
- 14:08SPEAKER_00: Now, when a homeowner calls with water or fire damage, what does a great first hour look like from your side?
- 14:16SPEAKER_01: So with water damage, it customer usually calls, or if if the plumber's there first, a lot of times the the plumbers that we partner with will tell them, hey, you you really need to you really need to call somebody and you need to call somebody reputable that's gonna that's not going to take advantage of you.
- 14:35SPEAKER_01: And so we get that phone call, we show up, it's a situation where after several, after a couple of years, I can look at it and say, yeah, this is going to typically be a an insurance claim.
- 14:52SPEAKER_01: Not that I'm looking for it to be an insurance claim, but we're out there to try to guide the homeowner into the right decision.
- 14:59SPEAKER_01: So if it's a if it's a small something, I I usually tell, yeah, it's it's it's not going to be enough for an insurance claim.
- 15:06SPEAKER_01: You're you're gonna want to do this out of pocket.
- 15:09SPEAKER_01: If it's large, nobody right now has disposable incomes of, you know,$10,000,$15,000 to do a full-on remodel and and rebuild of a most or part of a house.
- 15:22SPEAKER_01: So we try to we try to guide them in the way that they need to go.
- 15:27SPEAKER_01: And the the perfect setup for me is we get in there and I can say, yes, it's going to be either this or this, but either which way we need to get started.
- 15:37SPEAKER_01: If it's if it's a category three, which is a sewage leak, then you know, explain to the homeowner.
- 15:44SPEAKER_01: There's viruses and diseases and bacteria in this.
- 15:49SPEAKER_01: It may, it may dry out by itself, but those bacteria, the viruses are going to stay there.
- 15:54SPEAKER_01: They're going to live until they get until they get cleaned away.
- 15:58SPEAKER_01: So get a homeowner that I can educate and explain to them.
- 16:03SPEAKER_01: I don't just, I don't just talk to them or just talk at them.
- 16:08SPEAKER_01: I give them references.
- 16:09SPEAKER_01: I I go in there, I show them the water meter, I show them how it works, tell them here's here's how this works, here's how this situation runs.
- 16:18SPEAKER_01: If you don't believe me, go to the internet, type in IICRC S500, the standard for all water cleanup.
- 16:29SPEAKER_01: Verify it.
- 16:30SPEAKER_01: Don't don't just take my word for it.
- 16:31SPEAKER_01: Verify.
- 16:33SPEAKER_01: And that in itself helps out a lot.
- 16:36SPEAKER_01: People do it.
- 16:37SPEAKER_01: Then I get it, I typically get a call back saying, okay, yeah, we we saw everything you said, let's let's get started.
- 16:44SPEAKER_01: And that's that's honestly the the best case scenario that that goes through.
- 16:50SPEAKER_00: Okay, okay.
- 16:52SPEAKER_00: Now, what has been the biggest win since launching?
- 16:55SPEAKER_00: Has it been a job, a referral relationship, a team milestone, or has it been a moment when you knew the business was gaining traction?
- 17:04SPEAKER_01: Biggest win is honestly the fact that we have we've earned the trust of many of the insurance adjusters and the agents.
- 17:16SPEAKER_01: The fact that we've been able to beat our our totals from last year, this year, we're we're growing.
- 17:25SPEAKER_01: I can see it, I can see the the the growth lines and the the all the bar graphs and everything.
- 17:31SPEAKER_01: But the honestly, for me, it's the the knowledge that hey, I've got I'm not just relying on one demographic to give me jobs.
- 17:41SPEAKER_01: Uh I've got adjusters, I've got agents, I've got other contractors.
- 17:46SPEAKER_01: They know what we're doing, they know the kind of work we put out, they trust us with the people that that mean the most to them.
- 17:55SPEAKER_01: And so that in itself, to me, is the biggest win is getting over that hurdle, being one of the trusted few to handle things like this.
- 18:06SPEAKER_00: Now, how was work how has working together kind of, you know, you as and and your son, how has working together kind of strengthened the business?
- 18:13SPEAKER_00: And where do you deliberately keep your responsibilities separate so you do not step on each other?
- 18:19SPEAKER_01: So I was going through a I was going through a tough time.
- 18:23SPEAKER_01: I hired originally I hired a business development manager that it didn't work out, decided I was gonna do it myself can't do it.
- 18:33SPEAKER_01: I'll just put it out there.
- 18:35SPEAKER_01: Anybody that's that's an entrepreneur that wants to be their their salesman, their bookkeeper, their accounting department, and one of their workers, you're you're not gonna make it.
- 18:47SPEAKER_01: It's it's there's too much.
- 18:49SPEAKER_01: There's not enough men, there's not enough days uh in the week and not enough hours in the day to to to have that happen.
- 18:57SPEAKER_01: So I had to make a quick decision.
- 19:01SPEAKER_01: My office is out of my hump, out of my house.
- 19:04SPEAKER_01: And not that I don't trust my guys, I I absolutely trust them.
- 19:09SPEAKER_01: But at the same time, I'm not sure that I want somebody just having in full access to my house all the time, in and out, you know, without me being there or or whatever.
- 19:21SPEAKER_01: It's just it's just a a thing.
- 19:24SPEAKER_01: You know, if if they were to come in and work on the house, that's one thing, but to to just come in and and work behind the computer all day, I'd rather them just work from home if they were going to do that.
- 19:35SPEAKER_01: But I needed somebody that I could put in the in the sales position.
- 19:41SPEAKER_01: And my wife and I were like, well, you know what?
- 19:47SPEAKER_01: My son not only does he already have full access to the house access to the house, he's very charismatic.
- 19:55SPEAKER_01: He's uh trustworthy, he knows how to talk to people, he knows how to hold a conversation, he's got a wide variety of topics he can talk about from golf to college football to anything else that's under the sun.
- 20:09SPEAKER_01: That that he's he's into everything, it seems like.
- 20:13SPEAKER_01: And I was like, well, let's let's try him out.
- 20:18SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna tell you, he he met up with a couple of the plumbing companies and uh they're friends.
- 20:26SPEAKER_01: He he they call him, he calls them, they talk on the phone independent of doing stuff at work.
- 20:32SPEAKER_01: Uh it's he's he's actually done the job better than anybody else that I've ever I've ever had working for me in that position, including myself.
- 20:42SPEAKER_01: So uh that was that's the that's his job is the sales job.
- 20:47SPEAKER_01: His job is go out, get us more business.
- 20:51SPEAKER_01: He he's very organized and he's he's very thoughtful.
- 20:56SPEAKER_01: And as he's sitting there watching TV at night, him and his new wife, I I I know he's thinking about work because I'll get a text or I'll get a phone call.
- 21:08SPEAKER_01: Hey, I just thought of this.
- 21:10SPEAKER_01: Okay, great, run with it.
- 21:12SPEAKER_01: Let's let's see where it goes.
- 21:14SPEAKER_01: And he's he's been great.
- 21:16SPEAKER_01: He's he has been he's been the biggest part of the success of this company is getting out and getting the name out there and getting in front of people, different groups, different clubs, different organizations, Chamber of Commerce, all that stuff.
- 21:31SPEAKER_01: He he's the one that's actually pushed us into the next that that next marketing tier.
- 21:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I'll uh I'll kind of piggyback on that a little bit.
- 21:41SPEAKER_02: He gives me a dad gives me a lot of freedom to, I'm very creative.
- 21:45SPEAKER_02: I like to think outside the box.
- 21:47SPEAKER_02: He gives me a lot of freedom to just kind of explore and trial a lot of trial and error.
- 21:53SPEAKER_02: And of course I keep him updated.
- 21:56SPEAKER_02: Hey, I'm gonna try this.
- 21:57SPEAKER_02: And he's like, okay, if it you have this many days to s to to show something, and we if it doesn't work within that many days, then we don't we kind of drop it and go the next idea that we have together.
- 22:13SPEAKER_02: There is a lot of late night conversations about hey, where can where can this go?
- 22:19SPEAKER_02: What what are you what are we thinking about trying to get into?
- 22:22SPEAKER_02: What what all what all can we do is
- 22:36SPEAKER_00: Now, what mistake or hard lesson has made you all better owners and operators, would you say?
- 22:44SPEAKER_01: Biggest mistake.
- 22:45SPEAKER_01: Biggest mistakes is there's there's so many.
- 22:50SPEAKER_01: Put the right personnel in the right place.
- 22:52SPEAKER_01: That's huge.
- 22:54SPEAKER_01: We went we went for a little bit with the wrong personnel in the wrong places, and ended up ended up cost us quite a bit of money.
- 23:04SPEAKER_01: Uh we figured it out, made changes, rearranged some things, adjusted schedules, moved it right out.
- 23:14SPEAKER_01: I'm an operations guy.
- 23:16SPEAKER_01: It doesn't matter if it's running a warehouse, running a a yard at a distribution center, or or running a water mitigation company.
- 23:26SPEAKER_01: Operations is is all about uh getting the customer happy.
- 23:35SPEAKER_01: In some old terms, I think out of a uh Six Sigma experience, and it's the delighters.
- 23:51SPEAKER_01: That was awesome.
- 23:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it best case scenario, I got a hold of you guys.
- 24:03SPEAKER_01: And we we hit and miss.
- 24:06SPEAKER_01: Every customer's different.
- 24:07SPEAKER_01: And so we we hit and miss on some things.
- 24:09SPEAKER_01: We we've got a lot of things that we do that that actually makes a lot of customers happy.
- 24:15SPEAKER_01: And and of course you can't make everybody happy, and but we do the best we can.
- 24:21SPEAKER_00: Now, how you know let's kind of get into this a little bit more, kind of hypothetical, but let's say if you could wave a magic wand, right?
- 24:28SPEAKER_00: If you could make a wave a magic wand and fix one part of your franchise business, what would it be and why?
- 24:35SPEAKER_00: Oh wow.
- 24:37SPEAKER_01: Ryan, you have any thoughts on that?
- 24:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we have a we have a pretty large subset of of people you know that listen to the podcast every week that are small entrepreneurs.
- 24:47SPEAKER_00: So this is this is what they really want to hear.
- 24:51SPEAKER_02: Honestly, I would say if we could wave a magic wand.
- 24:55SPEAKER_02: Oh my goodness.
- 24:57SPEAKER_02: I wish there was a magic wand.
- 24:59SPEAKER_02: I would say honestly, focusing on the back half of business.
- 25:04SPEAKER_02: So for that, I would say not that I not that it's a issue, but just how long our estimates take because of how detailed and thorough the guys are.
- 25:16SPEAKER_02: Getting those out faster to the insurance company because they they want them.
- 25:21SPEAKER_02: We pick up the equipment on Thursday, they want it by Friday.
- 25:25SPEAKER_02: If we could get those out faster, that is 100% where I would 100% wave that magic wand.
- 25:34SPEAKER_02: Because as we have grown and gotten bigger, I have kind of helped Dad with the estimates.
- 25:41SPEAKER_02: And um sometimes it does take a little bit longer than what we would like and what the insurance company likes, but that is the honest truth, in my opinion.
- 25:50SPEAKER_02: Dad, do you have anything?
- 25:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah, on my side of it, if I could go back and and wave that magic wand and and undo some things, the the biggest thing I would look at is everybody wants to talk about internet marketing.
- 26:07SPEAKER_01: Yes, it's important.
- 26:08SPEAKER_01: Yes, you gotta have a Google page, yes, you gotta have all this.
- 26:11SPEAKER_01: There's a there's a right way and a wrong way.
- 26:16SPEAKER_01: Uh I I did not know a lot of what I know now.
- 26:22SPEAKER_01: I wish I had, so one of my son-in-laws, he is an an IT manager uh at Western Carolina University.
- 26:31SPEAKER_01: I wish I had more conversations with him prior to reaching out to some of these places to money.
- 26:39SPEAKER_00: So how many hours are each of you working in a typical typical week in an on the business right now?
- 26:44SPEAKER_02: Typically, so I work, oh my gosh, for the sales side.
- 26:50SPEAKER_02: So sales is typically done by about I would say four or five o'clock.
- 26:56SPEAKER_02: And then I'm working on estimates till about seven or eight.
- 27:00SPEAKER_02: So I I'm probably doing at least sixty hours a week, and I know dad's doing more than that.
- 27:08SPEAKER_02: I don't know how how long.
- 27:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I get a lot of I get a lot of long work days and short weekends.
- 27:14SPEAKER_00: Okay, okay.
- 27:16SPEAKER_00: Now, Ryan, would what would Bob say is your strongest leadership quality?
- 27:21SPEAKER_00: And Bob, what would Ryan say is yours?
- 27:25SPEAKER_01: No, that's what we refer to.
- 27:26SPEAKER_01: Ryan's strongest, strongest leadership quality is the fact that he is he's been on the the boots on the ground teams working in the water, working in other areas.
- 27:40SPEAKER_01: So he can he can empathize with those guys as they're overworked, and and you know, we get a call at you know 15 minutes to five, and I send everybody home at 4 30 and call on them back, hey, uh we just got another call.
- 27:55SPEAKER_01: We got to go out, we got to go out and get it.
- 27:57SPEAKER_01: So Ryan being able to empathize with those people and uh being able to say, hey, I'm gonna meet you out there and we're gonna do this.
- 28:08SPEAKER_01: It's not just gonna be you guys going out there.
- 28:09SPEAKER_01: I'm I'm gonna meet you out there and and we're gonna work this together.
- 28:13SPEAKER_01: That's his that that's his strongest dude, I would believe.
- 28:18SPEAKER_02: For for dad, it'd honestly just be his faith because he 100% believes that our guys are the best there is.
- 28:26SPEAKER_02: He puts he puts 100% faith in every single one of our guys to go in there and do the job and get it done correctly in a timely manner, take care of the homeowner, and just just be the amazing guys that they are.
- 28:40SPEAKER_02: And honestly, we will we wouldn't be where we're at without the guys that we have.
- 28:47SPEAKER_02: They are amazing.
- 28:49SPEAKER_02: And honestly, dad just puts a lot of faith in them, and that that right there just it it shows the guys just how much we care about he cares about them.
- 29:01SPEAKER_02: So we take care of them, they take care of us.
- 29:05SPEAKER_00: Okay, okay, I like that.
- 29:06SPEAKER_00: Now, you know, let's look at the opposite end of that.
- 29:09SPEAKER_00: This is gonna be this is gonna be a good one here.
- 29:12SPEAKER_00: So yeah, we're gonna look at the opposite end of that.
- 29:15SPEAKER_00: No, what is one business or leadership leadership skill each of you still need to want?
- 29:20SPEAKER_01: On me, it's procrastination.
- 29:21SPEAKER_01: I get so busy with some of the estimates, they'll take four or five hours just to do one estimate.
- 29:30SPEAKER_01: So I by the time you're done with that, you're you're spent.
- 29:34SPEAKER_01: And it's like, I'll just read the email tomorrow.
- 29:36SPEAKER_01: I'll go through my emails tomorrow.
- 29:38SPEAKER_01: And then tomorrow something else comes up.
- 29:40SPEAKER_01: Well, I've got to do this.
- 29:41SPEAKER_01: Well, I'll get to this later.
- 29:45SPEAKER_01: It just seems there's there's the the procrastination side of it.
- 29:50SPEAKER_01: If I just get in there and do it while I'm there, I know it's gonna take another 15 minutes, but I'm exhausted.
- 29:55SPEAKER_01: Well, let's just go ahead and get it done now.
- 29:57SPEAKER_01: I wish there was I I I need to work on more of that than the well, I'll get I'll get it tomorrow kind of thing.
- 30:06SPEAKER_02: I I would piggyback on that because my my biggest issue is procrastination, but I also I would also say delegation as well.
- 30:18SPEAKER_02: I like to do everything, I like to try to do everything myself, and I know I need I know that I need help doing it, and that's that's my biggest issue, is making that phone call to dad at four o'clock in the afternoon.
- 30:33SPEAKER_02: Hey, I need your help doing this estimate.
- 30:36SPEAKER_02: I gotta get it in, but I I need your help doing it.
- 30:39SPEAKER_02: And it's it's a lot, it's it's hard for me for to just just to make that phone call because I want to be able to do it myself.
- 30:48SPEAKER_00: Okay, I like that.
- 30:50SPEAKER_00: Now, I I know a 24-7 restoration business cannot predict when the next loss will happen.
- 30:56SPEAKER_00: So, what systems kind of keep dispatch documentation, equipment, and customer communication under control, even when you guys are sleeping at night?
- 31:07SPEAKER_02: So I'll just be honest, and dad hasn't touched on it yet, but dad was in the Navy for a while.
- 31:14SPEAKER_02: He can wake up to just about any sound.
- 31:16SPEAKER_02: So if it's past our quote unquote normal hours, all phone calls get directed to him and he can wake up at the drop of a hat.
- 31:25SPEAKER_02: So you call it, say you call us at midnight, you call dad directly, and he will answer the phone, and our guys are our guys are great.
- 31:37SPEAKER_02: I I know I touched on that a little bit, but the guys, we can call our lead tech and he'll answer the phone.
- 31:43SPEAKER_02: He'll be here in 15 minutes, and you guys will just they'll just take off.
- 31:50SPEAKER_01: We uh Ryan is right about that.
- 31:53SPEAKER_01: I I sleep with with one ear open, so to speak.
- 31:57SPEAKER_01: I I I can hear the the phone ring, I can hear I can I can hear a car pull up in the driveway and it'll wake me up.
- 32:07SPEAKER_01: So the phone rings, it'll wake me up.
- 32:10SPEAKER_01: I go in the other room, answer the phone call.
- 32:12SPEAKER_01: I can be dressed and out the door in 15 minutes and to wherever wherever I need to go in an emergency.
- 32:19SPEAKER_01: I can call any of the guys and they will come and join me.
- 32:25SPEAKER_01: So it's it's one of those situations where I've got a good crew, I've got a good team, and it's a 24-7 business.
- 32:33SPEAKER_01: So somebody's got to do it.
- 32:36SPEAKER_00: Now, where do your best jobs come from right now?
- 32:39SPEAKER_00: Is it from kind of plumbers, insurance agents, Google, referrals?
- 32:43SPEAKER_00: I mean, and it's something I'm not listing here.
- 32:46SPEAKER_00: Where are your most good jobs coming from right now?
- 32:49SPEAKER_01: Um we get a lot of internet traffic.
- 32:51SPEAKER_01: Plumbers call us.
- 32:52SPEAKER_01: We've got a we've got three or four good plumbing companies that that use us specifically, and we pass work back and forth with them.
- 33:01SPEAKER_01: So it's it's a give and take.
- 33:02SPEAKER_01: It's not just a one-way, one-way deal for us.
- 33:05SPEAKER_01: We've got insurance adjusters that trust us, we've got insurance agents that trust us, and we go out, we help them.
- 33:13SPEAKER_01: They understand that we're we're out there trying to help the people in the I mean, we're not we're not trying to take advantage of the insurance company, but we're out to help the people get back into a healthy spot.
- 33:23SPEAKER_01: And just because of that, we're we get a lot of we get a lot of phone calls.
- 33:29SPEAKER_01: We get some from you know, the truck has the phone number on the side of the on the side of it.
- 33:35SPEAKER_01: And every once in a while, hey, I saw your truck over at my neighbor's house.
- 33:39SPEAKER_01: I got this issue.
- 33:40SPEAKER_01: Can you come over and take a look at it?
- 33:43SPEAKER_01: We get calls from insurance agents, or not, excuse me, not insurance agents, but real estate agents who call and and they've got a customer or that's that's trying to buy a house, and they just need to find out if the the black spots on the on the wall are are mold or if they're dirt.
- 34:04SPEAKER_01: We don't do the testing for it because it's it's a conflict of interest to do the testing and the cleanup.
- 34:11SPEAKER_01: But we go in there with some antimicrobial and we do a a light treatment.
- 34:16SPEAKER_01: If it if it cleans and goes away or or foams up, then we can tell them it's it's this this is at least clean.
- 34:24SPEAKER_01: It's not fixed.
- 34:26SPEAKER_01: It's you know, can't tell you for sure it's dirt or if it's if it's mold, but it's it's clean and there's nothing gonna be growing on that spot for a while.
- 34:36SPEAKER_00: So now how closely are you kind of tracking lead source and estimates?
- 34:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah, or CRM tracking that pretty good.
- 34:44SPEAKER_01: Whenever whenever we're filling everything out, we it tells us uh or there's a a line item that we have to put in there for where the lead came from and and uh make sure that it's documented uh and the outcome and all that stuff.
- 34:57SPEAKER_01: So it's all it's all tracked on our uh on our programs.
- 35:02unknown: Okay.
- 35:02SPEAKER_02: I would say though our best our our our best jobs are honestly coming from our our our plumbers a lot of times because they're they're in it.
- 35:15SPEAKER_02: They they know the ones that we work very heavily with, they know exactly what they they know they know exactly what we're looking for, and they give us a call and uh they'll say, say if they call me, they go, hey Ryan, uh I got you one, I need you here today.
- 35:31SPEAKER_02: Can you get here in 15 minutes?
- 35:33SPEAKER_02: Sure, I'll be there.
- 35:34SPEAKER_02: Send me the address.
- 35:36SPEAKER_02: And we we get out there, and that's that's honestly where the best our best leads are coming from.
- 35:43SPEAKER_00: Okay, okay.
- 35:44SPEAKER_00: Now, you know, I want to get into your competition a little bit here.
- 35:48SPEAKER_00: You know, let's say if I'm speaking to another restoration place across town, I'm speaking to Carlos here, I'm speaking uh to John over here.
- 35:55SPEAKER_00: Why why do customers and referral partners choose Catawa Valley team instead of another restoration?
- 36:01SPEAKER_00: So that's you better than you can competitive.
- 36:02SPEAKER_01: That's kind of a double-edged sword.
- 36:04SPEAKER_01: We Ryan touched on a little bit earlier.
- 36:07SPEAKER_01: We do it, our our guys work the best.
- 36:11SPEAKER_01: In my mind, they're they are the best priests out there.
- 36:14SPEAKER_01: They handle the customers, they deal with the customers, we we deal with all the insurance stuff.
- 36:20SPEAKER_01: And we do it in a manner that that the customer is educated as we're as we're working through it and not just sold.
- 36:29SPEAKER_01: And yeah, I I mean other companies do the same thing.
- 36:32SPEAKER_01: We handle our billing a little different than than some of the other guys do.
- 36:37SPEAKER_01: I don't want to give away too many trade secrets, but we we're not out trying to to to gouge anybody, whether it be the customer or the or the insurance insurance company at the same time.
- 36:50SPEAKER_01: If there's a uh and I and I I can give you this for instance, we had a job not too long ago, get a call, it was a Saturday morning, I go out there and just to do the inspection on it, and as I'm standing there with a plumber, we we force open a bathroom, or excuse me, we open force open a uh a basement door and sewage comes rolling out.
- 37:17SPEAKER_01: Um somewhere in the in the sewer line for the city, they had a block and the blockage closed her valve that that keeps things from her backflow valve, keeps things from flowing from the city side to her side.
- 37:34SPEAKER_01: But at the same time, with that valve closed, nothing from her side can get out.
- 37:39SPEAKER_01: So not sure how long it had been going on, but the basement had about an inch deep of water that came through the toilet, whether it be it came from washing machine and dishwasher and and washing dishes and using the restroom, taking showers, all that stuff, it it all backflowed into her fully finished, fully furnished basement.
- 38:03SPEAKER_01: And we get we go out there, first thing we do, I call the guys, they show up, they they start getting all the pictures.
- 38:12SPEAKER_01: Obviously, there's no reason for some of the moisture readings because it was all wet.
- 38:16SPEAKER_01: You could see it was all wet.
- 38:17SPEAKER_01: Water was, you know, coming up the top of your shoes.
- 38:20SPEAKER_01: They took pictures of everything, documented everything, cleaned everything up, and I go upstairs to talk to the lady and talk to her about her insurance and how she's gonna file the claim and all that, and then try to walk her through it, find out she's got a uh a cap on her policy, and which means insurance company is only gonna pay X amount of dollars on that on that policy for the damage that we're cleaning up.
- 38:45SPEAKER_01: And we just in the couple hours we were there, we exceeded that that amount.
- 38:52SPEAKER_01: The insurance adjuster met with me the next day after we had everything cleaned up and we had all the equipment running, we had everything cleaned up, pulled out, ripped out, thrown away, dealt with the way it was supposed to be dealt with.
- 39:05SPEAKER_01: And he looks at me and he goes, So now what are you gonna do?
- 39:09SPEAKER_01: And I was like, I I don't understand the question.
- 39:13SPEAKER_01: He goes, What are you gonna do?
- 39:14SPEAKER_01: And I was like, about what?
- 39:17SPEAKER_01: He goes, uh the the customer, she her husband had passed away or uh a couple of months prior to that, and she's on a walker and she's in medical bed in her dining room because it's closest to the the bathroom and the and the kitchen where she doesn't have to run the length of the house.
- 39:39SPEAKER_01: She's obviously on a fixed income.
- 39:42SPEAKER_01: What are you going to do?
- 39:43SPEAKER_01: I know what your bill is, I know what her cap is.
- 39:46SPEAKER_01: What are you gonna do?
- 39:47SPEAKER_01: And I said, I've already sent her my bill, and as soon as you pay her what you're gonna pay her, then my bill will be settled.
- 39:55SPEAKER_01: And he goes, You're not gonna chase her for the money?
- 39:58SPEAKER_01: No.
- 39:58SPEAKER_01: Uh there's no point in beating a woman to death who doesn't have the ability to pay, and and she's got her own health issues, and she's got dealing with with the loss of of her husband just a few months before.
- 40:14SPEAKER_01: I'm I'm not going to add to this woman's pain by by chasing her for the the leftover money.
- 40:22SPEAKER_01: She paid what what the insurance paid her.
- 40:25SPEAKER_01: We had an agreement.
- 40:26SPEAKER_01: If the city pays her some more, she'll add to that payment.
- 40:30SPEAKER_01: But if they don't, then they don't.
- 40:33SPEAKER_01: And everything's marked bill paid.
- 40:36SPEAKER_01: So that's what makes us different.
- 40:39SPEAKER_01: We we we work with the customer, we help the customer, we do everything we possibly can to to get the customer in a in a a better place.
- 40:49SPEAKER_01: And if if I can do anything to to make that process better, make that process easier, then we do it.
- 40:56SPEAKER_00: Okay, okay.
- 40:57SPEAKER_00: Now, what does the team look like today?
- 41:00SPEAKER_00: But you know, you talked about your guys.
- 41:01SPEAKER_00: How how many how many people uh I've got uh three crews.
- 41:07SPEAKER_01: They uh vary in experience and scope of work that they can do.
- 41:16SPEAKER_01: And I've got, you know, like I said, all all uh they're interchangeable.
- 41:22SPEAKER_01: So if I if I've got a sewage, a sewage link in a in a crawl space, which happens a lot, I know there's a couple of guys that I can call and call on and say, hey, you guys are working together today, you go tackle this problem.
- 41:37SPEAKER_01: And they get it taken care of.
- 41:39SPEAKER_01: If it's you know, if cabinets have got to come out and you know, we're trying to protect a stone top because stone tops are expensive and most people really like their stone tops.
- 41:51SPEAKER_01: We I've got a couple of guys that are are really good at at removing them without breaking them.
- 41:56SPEAKER_01: And we we we store them and put them at set them up in a position where they're they're not gonna break or they're not gonna be in the way or or whatever, and and uh those guys are are suited for that.
- 42:10SPEAKER_01: So there's m multiple different uh ways that things shake out, and I can mix and match any of the any of the guys to do what needs to be done, and they they get out there and take care of it.
- 42:23SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 42:25SPEAKER_00: Now, what is the hardest part about recruiting and developing technicians who can handle technical restoration work and also communicate with distressed homeowners?
- 42:33SPEAKER_00: Is that tougher than you see?
- 42:35SPEAKER_00: Because I talk to a lot of entrepreneurs on here, obviously, and I've heard a lot of things about it it's easy to put a tech into place, but it's hard to find good employees who give a damn about their work.
- 42:46SPEAKER_00: What have you talked about?
- 42:47SPEAKER_02: Oh my gosh, it's it's very difficult.
- 42:52SPEAKER_02: Not only do you have to deal with the the homeowner being very the whenever we walk in, it's unfortunately it's one of the worst days of their lives.
- 43:03SPEAKER_02: We're telling them everything we have to rip out, we're telling them all the all bad news, but finding that guy that can deliver the really bad news and still be able to put a smile on their face after they tell them all this terrible news, it's they're a dime a dozen.
- 43:20SPEAKER_02: And not to also put on top of that, they've got to be able to deal with the smell of the raw sewage.
- 43:27SPEAKER_02: They've got to be able to be smart enough to how to dismantle something without absolutely tearing it up and tearing up the customer the the customers' house, floors, anything.
- 43:43SPEAKER_02: It's very difficult.
- 43:46SPEAKER_02: Honestly, the way we do it is trial by fire.
- 43:50SPEAKER_02: Honestly.
- 43:51SPEAKER_02: We set him with one of our we set him with our lead tech and who's been with us now for almost since we opened, who can do just about anything.
- 44:03SPEAKER_02: We set him with him, and by the end of the day, we ask him, all right, how do you do?
- 44:07SPEAKER_02: And he he he tells us he it'll be good or he's gonna need a lot of work.
- 44:13SPEAKER_01: And kind of figure back on what Brian's saying.
- 44:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you you can find somebody that can deal with uh handle the customer and work with them, or you can find somebody that can do really well with the cleanup and Yeah, take care of that portion of it.
- 44:29SPEAKER_01: It's really difficult to find somebody that can that can take care of both sides of it at the same time.
- 44:33SPEAKER_01: And my guys, if if you talk to the customer and you can't get in there and do what needs to be done, then there's some training involved.
- 44:49SPEAKER_01: But we we do the best we can with getting everybody on on board.
- 44:55SPEAKER_00: Totally agree.
- 44:56SPEAKER_00: Now, do you think it's a generational thing?
- 44:59SPEAKER_00: I mean, what do you think is what do you think it's happening here?
- 45:01SPEAKER_01: Honestly, it is a generational thing.
- 45:03SPEAKER_01: The younger, the the younger guys, and not all of them, because uh my lead tech, he's still one of the younger guys, but he's he does handling the customers.
- 45:14SPEAKER_01: But the the really younger guys that we have, they they get tongue-tied real easy.
- 45:20SPEAKER_01: They don't they don't talk to the customer well.
- 45:22SPEAKER_01: They don't they don't handle the the situation as as gracefully as they should.
- 45:28SPEAKER_01: The older guys, they're better at the at handling the customers and making sure everything's taken care of.
- 45:35SPEAKER_00: Okay, okay.
- 45:37SPEAKER_00: Now what uh let's see here.
- 45:39SPEAKER_00: How do I ask this?
- 45:41SPEAKER_00: Which growth lever is kind of strongest right now?
- 45:43SPEAKER_00: Is it more referral partners?
- 45:45SPEAKER_00: Is it commercial work, more technicians, reconstruction, geographic reach, or simply more aware of the case?
- 45:56SPEAKER_01: Um Yeah, we're trying to break into some commercial stuff, and we we get commercial calls here and there.
- 46:04SPEAKER_01: Uh we're we're trying to break into some other areas that that we haven't been in before with certifications and things that that we're working on.
- 46:12SPEAKER_01: But the biggest thing is the brand awareness.
- 46:15SPEAKER_01: Uh I think the rest of it will come if if they know that they can call us for multiple different things, not just, hey, you know, my water heater blew up.
- 46:26SPEAKER_01: I need it, I need somebody to come clean up the water.
- 46:30SPEAKER_00: Okay, okay.
- 46:32SPEAKER_00: Now, if we had you back, let's say in two years from now, right?
- 46:37SPEAKER_00: Let's say by let's say 2029, right?
- 46:39SPEAKER_00: What would what would need to be true for both of you to say the business has become what you envisioned when you started?
- 46:46SPEAKER_01: Uh on my side, I've I've said from the beginning, I've got a I've got a 10-year plan and and currently we're about two and a half years into it.
- 46:55SPEAKER_01: So we're on track from what I've what I'm seeing right now with what I want to have happen.
- 47:02SPEAKER_01: So if in order for me to say we're we're successful, is that that 10-year plan is is actually still two years closer than what it is now when you when you have us on.
- 47:15SPEAKER_01: So yeah, that's that's that would be a success for me.
- 47:20SPEAKER_02: For me, for for to be in a for me to say it's a success, I would say landing a very large contract with a very national brand property manager that we get to manage uh, well not manage, but be their primary water mitigation experts, they call us for anything and everything from a sales standpoint.
- 47:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that'd be awesome.
- 47:48SPEAKER_00: All right, perfect.
- 47:49SPEAKER_00: And now that's the short term.
- 47:50SPEAKER_00: Now, if there were one meaningful thing, you know, you guys could change in the next 90 days, you know, we're recording this around Labor Day, so that would put us right right at the start of Christmas kickoff season.
- 47:59SPEAKER_00: So if you could change one meaningful thing in the business in the next 90 days, what would it be and why would that matter personally to you?
- 48:06SPEAKER_01: That's a very good question.
