- 0:07Speaker 1: This Mead Podcast. Welcome to media to Trivia, the only
- 0:12Speaker 1: game show where conservation always wins. I am your host,
- 0:15Speaker 1: Spencer new Art, and I have some good news and
- 0:17Speaker 1: bad news. The bad news is we don't have Steve
- 0:20Speaker 1: Rinella or Brodie Henderson here today. But the good news
- 0:23Speaker 1: is we have Clay Newcomb here. Clay, welcome to the show.
- 0:26Speaker 1: Thanks man, who lazy to fill the whole those time left?
- 0:30Speaker 1: Why is it bad news that they're not here? Yeah? Yeah,
- 0:33Speaker 1: it feels like general this room is energy is better. Yeah,
- 0:37Speaker 1: like yeah, this positive. I feel like we can speak.
- 0:43Speaker 1: It's definitely a younger crowd. Yeah, a lot younger. Now
- 0:47Speaker 1: Clay is the only person who is undefeated at Trivia.
- 0:51Speaker 1: He has played once and he's won once. How does
- 0:53Speaker 1: that feel? Man? It feels great to be on top
- 0:55Speaker 1: of the mountain man. Now, Clay, I tell you secret,
- 0:59Speaker 1: keep between us. Don't tell Steve or Cal and Mark.
- 1:02Speaker 1: But I think Bear Grease is the best podcast Meat
- 1:05Speaker 1: Eater has. Yes, thank you it is. I mean thank you,
- 1:10Speaker 1: that's right. You were. You were giving me a preview
- 1:12Speaker 1: before the show of what's to come on Bear Grease
- 1:14Speaker 1: next few months. Tell these listeners what they can expect dah,
- 1:17Speaker 1: you you want me to go into the details, not
- 1:20Speaker 1: that amount of detail. I podcast right now, jas not
- 1:24Speaker 1: here I can talk. So we're doing a We're gonna
- 1:29Speaker 1: do a series on some of Arkansas's most notorious turkey
- 1:34Speaker 1: poachers of all time. The guys that I they were
- 1:37Speaker 1: much older than me. They were my father's age, but
- 1:40Speaker 1: I grew up with them and they they just in
- 1:43Speaker 1: the last year, the last brother. It was two brothers.
- 1:45Speaker 1: One of them passed away and it's pretty incredible story.
- 1:50Speaker 1: Interviewed the game wardens that chase them, interviewed their family.
- 1:54Speaker 1: And the wild part is Janest Hotelus is You're going
- 1:58Speaker 1: to have a hard time being endeared to these men.
- 2:02Speaker 1: I'm gonna leave it right there. That's a good tease.
- 2:04Speaker 1: Now we are also joined by Gabby Wilson. This is
- 2:07Speaker 1: her first time in the show. Gabby, tell folks what
- 2:09Speaker 1: you do here at Meat Eater. I am the social
- 2:11Speaker 1: media coordinator. What does that mean? I coordinate the social
- 2:16Speaker 1: media schedule posts. I actually worked pretty closely with Misty
- 2:19Speaker 1: Newcome in the Wild and whole team and schedule posts
- 2:21Speaker 1: for them and work with the content over there. So yep, Gabby,
- 2:26Speaker 1: welcome to the show now. If you're not familiar, this
- 2:28Speaker 1: is a ten round quiz show with questions or out
- 2:31Speaker 1: of meat eaters for verticals, what are they? Yanni, hunting, fishing, eating,
- 2:37Speaker 1: and conservation. That's right, and there is a prize. Meat
- 2:40Speaker 1: eater will donate five hundred dollars to the conservation organization
- 2:43Speaker 1: of the winners choosing. So far we've had Steve win
- 2:46Speaker 1: five times, Brody win four, and Clay, Seth, Jannis and
- 2:49Speaker 1: Karin each win once. So you're gonna have a first
- 2:53Speaker 1: time winner or a second time winner today. No Steve
- 2:55Speaker 1: or Brody eat. But do you have the stats as
- 2:58Speaker 1: to like what their race from wins to how many
- 3:02Speaker 1: times they've played? By far in first place? If we're
- 3:05Speaker 1: taking ratio because Steve, so you're saying Steve's played a
- 3:08Speaker 1: lot more, well, ratio would be Clay Nukam who's played
- 3:11Speaker 1: on Yeah, I know, so where where then does that?
- 3:16Speaker 1: I think? Then I think we'd have Brodie Henderson next.
- 3:18Speaker 1: So even though Steve's got one more win, Brody's done
- 3:21Speaker 1: it in less tribes. That's right now today in the room.
- 3:24Speaker 1: Besides Clay and Gabby, we also have be honest Boutellis
- 3:27Speaker 1: Ryan Callahan, Seth Morris, Crin Schneider, and Rick Hutton. I'm
- 3:30Speaker 1: thinking with this crew, it's gonna take like six correct
- 3:32Speaker 1: answers to win. So it's gonna be the bar. Now
- 3:35Speaker 1: we have some housekeeping. Is that a dig? No? No, no,
- 3:39Speaker 1: not a dig at all? Not? How do you go
- 3:41Speaker 1: about that, Gabby? It's gonna take six to win with
- 3:44Speaker 1: this crews and interpret that. For me, it as much
- 3:51Speaker 1: about the questions as it is about the group answering them. Now,
- 3:57Speaker 1: how do you how are you forming these questions? Do
- 3:59Speaker 1: you do you take to account the people that are
- 4:01Speaker 1: in the room. Sometimes if we have a guest, I will,
- 4:04Speaker 1: but no one in this room counts as guest. So
- 4:07Speaker 1: these are just straight up meat eater. Four vertical questions.
- 4:10Speaker 1: Now we have some house community, get you. We previously
- 4:12Speaker 1: talked about who sings to Dirty Point Buck? While many
- 4:15Speaker 1: believe it's to Upers, it's actually Bananas at Large. The
- 4:18Speaker 1: Wisconsin band released that song in nineteen eighty nine. Also
- 4:22Speaker 1: on a previous show, we had a question about what
- 4:24Speaker 1: are the only states with a flathead catfish record over
- 4:27Speaker 1: one hundred pounds. I was only looking at hook and
- 4:29Speaker 1: Line records, which would make the answer Nebraska, Kansas, and Missouri.
- 4:33Speaker 1: But if you factor in trotline records, then Oklahoma and
- 4:35Speaker 1: Texas would be added to the list. Brodie nor Steve
- 4:39Speaker 1: answered Oklahoma or Texas there so it wouldn't affect the
- 4:42Speaker 1: outcome of the game. And with that we are now
- 4:44Speaker 1: onto meat Eater Trivia. Play the drop, Phil, Look, I
- 4:49Speaker 1: need to know what I stand to win everything? How's
- 4:53Speaker 1: that had just tend to win everything? Game on Suckers.
- 5:05Speaker 1: Question one, as always, will be multiple choice. The topic
- 5:09Speaker 1: is fishing. Which of these is not a crank bait
- 5:13Speaker 1: color sold by Rappola? Is it pink squirrel, bleeding clown,
- 5:19Speaker 1: root beer, Crawdad or patriotic Shad? Again, which of these
- 5:24Speaker 1: is not a crank bait color sold by Rappola? Pink squirrel,
- 5:28Speaker 1: bleeding clown, root beer Crawdad or patriotic shad? Seth? How
- 5:35Speaker 1: you feeling about this? MM? Actually not confident. And I
- 5:41Speaker 1: spent a lot of time looking at I know I
- 5:45Speaker 1: was after my little trip down the Yellowstone recently, I
- 5:48Speaker 1: was buying and looking at crank baits and uh I
- 5:52Speaker 1: didn't see half of those. Uh answers, does everybody have
- 5:56Speaker 1: an answer? There's a lot of custom colors these days,
- 5:58Speaker 1: so there's too many very as. It's like a horrible
- 6:02Speaker 1: math problem. Clay, I know you've only played once, but
- 6:04Speaker 1: you're supposed to hide your answer, all right, go ahead
- 6:08Speaker 1: and reveal your answers. We have Cow saying bleeding clown,
- 6:12Speaker 1: Gabby saying bleeding clown, Clay saying bleeding clown, Crant saying
- 6:16Speaker 1: bleeding clown, Rick saying bleeding clown, Seth saying pink squirrel,
- 6:21Speaker 1: and Janna saying patriotic shad. Nobody said rup your crawdad.
- 6:25Speaker 1: The correct answer is patriotic shad. No correct. Jannis got
- 6:32Speaker 1: it right, Jannie got it right. Other you. I guessed that,
- 6:37Speaker 1: like I said, there was a couple that I hadn't
- 6:39Speaker 1: heard recently being on there. That's a gutsy gas. I mean,
- 6:43Speaker 1: you're attacking something patriotic mostly, but I figured it just
- 6:53Speaker 1: depends on who I'm hanging out with. Actually, but uh no,
- 6:58Speaker 1: because I figured that was like everybody would figure. Of
- 7:02Speaker 1: course Rapala would have a patriotic shad. I bet you're
- 7:09Speaker 1: good at paper rock scissors. I bet you're good at
- 7:11Speaker 1: paper rock scissors because scissors, yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, because
- 7:16Speaker 1: rock paper scissors, rock paper scissors. That's the way you play. No.
- 7:22Speaker 1: But when you know what the guy's gonna do, so
- 7:24Speaker 1: you calculate what he knows you're gonna do and you
- 7:26Speaker 1: do something different. That's what Jones did. You see what
- 7:29Speaker 1: I'm saying, the double cross. You threw me off with thee.
- 7:34Speaker 1: There goes six I needed to win. Other unique games
- 7:37Speaker 1: from Apola include Hot Mustard, Caribbean Shad, Black Wonderbread, Green Tiger, Voodoo, Hayes, Demon, Juicy, Lucy,
- 7:44Speaker 1: Blue Ghost, and my personal favorite, Moldy Fruit. You see
- 7:49Speaker 1: some of those are the new custom colors, aren't they?
- 7:52Speaker 1: A couple of them are new. Yeah, but the bleeding
- 7:53Speaker 1: clown has been went round for a while. The biggest
- 7:56Speaker 1: Walleye like clown I'm very familiar with, always like clown something.
- 8:01Speaker 1: Here's what Ropaula liked to do about six years ago.
- 8:04Speaker 1: They took all of their classic colors and then they
- 8:06Speaker 1: put a red bill on them and then called them
- 8:07Speaker 1: bleeding blank. So that's where you get the bleeding Clown.
- 8:11Speaker 1: We are now on the question too. The topic is conservation.
- 8:14Speaker 1: This next great question comes to us via Brandon Heart.
- 8:17Speaker 1: If you have a question you think is right for
- 8:18Speaker 1: meat Eater trivia. You can send it to trivia at
- 8:21Speaker 1: the meat eater dot com. America's last legally killed jaguar
- 8:26Speaker 1: was shot by a deer hunter in what state? America's
- 8:31Speaker 1: last legally killed jaguar was shot by a deer hunter
- 8:35Speaker 1: in what state? Some quick answers in the room, some
- 8:41Speaker 1: meracing by Seth. I just erased my small answer made
- 8:46Speaker 1: it bigger, so it's easier for you. There we go.
- 8:47Speaker 1: That's how confident. That's courtesy. Right there is. Everybody have
- 8:52Speaker 1: an answer. Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have
- 8:56Speaker 1: cal saying Arizona, Gabby saying Florida, Clay saying Arizona, Corin
- 9:00Speaker 1: saying Florida, Rick saying Texas, Seth saying Arizona, and Yannis
- 9:05Speaker 1: saying in Arizona. Jannis is two for two. The correct
- 9:07Speaker 1: answer is Arizona. Right. This jaguar was a male killed
- 9:12Speaker 1: in nineteen sixty five in Arizona's Patagonia Mountains. Although their
- 9:16Speaker 1: distribution used to go as far east as Louisiana, as
- 9:19Speaker 1: far west as California, and as far north as Colorado,
- 9:23Speaker 1: it's believed the only ones left in America are in
- 9:25Speaker 1: very southern Arizona. Hey, Hey, I'm gonna I'm gonna fill
- 9:30Speaker 1: you in on the so I don't write in to
- 9:32Speaker 1: correct you, Okay. Warrener Glenn in nineteen ninety six bade
- 9:37Speaker 1: with his Mountain Lion Dogs in New Mexico, the first
- 9:42Speaker 1: live documented jaguar. Like all the other jaguars they had
- 9:45Speaker 1: brought in dead up until that point. Call the Mountain
- 9:49Speaker 1: Lion Dogs now, canty, they're jaguar dogs. Well they twice
- 9:52Speaker 1: they have. He's bade two, but it was in New Mexico.
- 9:55Speaker 1: I like it, photo of it. There have been a
- 9:57Speaker 1: few killed since then in Arizona, but they were I
- 10:01Speaker 1: think one was poached by a couple like teenage duck hunters,
- 10:04Speaker 1: and then the other one was killed by a mountain
- 10:06Speaker 1: lion hunter. I don't think he knew what he was shooting. Spencer.
- 10:08Speaker 1: Do you know what the best movie of all time is? No?
- 10:10Speaker 1: What is it? Raising Arizona? There you go? Are you
- 10:13Speaker 1: big nit cage fan? How can you not be? Come on?
- 10:18Speaker 1: Bottomless talent? That's right? We are on your question three.
- 10:21Speaker 1: The topic is foraging. What does the colorful acronym l
- 10:25Speaker 1: b M stand for? In foraging? What does the colorful
- 10:31Speaker 1: acronym l B M stand for in foraging. A quick
- 10:39Speaker 1: answer from Ryan Callahan, But the rest of the room
- 10:42Speaker 1: looks fairly stumped. Stump, it's a good mushroom, pund s
- 10:48Speaker 1: l b M. Boy Korean gets start a fire with
- 10:56Speaker 1: that brain activity. Your cards hang now just a little bit.
- 11:00Speaker 1: You know, you're just trying to be got through. It's
- 11:06Speaker 1: not not a buddy's game around here. If you want
- 11:10Speaker 1: to copy, so you can, because it is not right,
- 11:12Speaker 1: Mine's not right. Does everybody have an answer? No, you're
- 11:18Speaker 1: still guessing. You don't. You don't have to. Yeah, I'm
- 11:20Speaker 1: just gonna take a pass you out, Ye, go ahead
- 11:24Speaker 1: and reveal your answers. We have Cow saying little brown mushrooms,
- 11:28Speaker 1: Gabby saying light bright, blank, Clay saying behind many that's good.
- 11:36Speaker 1: It's like CPR for mushroom. If that's not what it
- 11:39Speaker 1: should be. One Karin saying something blossoming something, Rick without
- 11:44Speaker 1: an answer, Seth saying little blue mushroom, and Jannie saying
- 11:48Speaker 1: little brown mushroom. Jannis is three for three. The correct
- 11:52Speaker 1: answer is little brown mushrooms. Really right there, right there?
- 11:59Speaker 1: Did your honest have ushroom's pluralized? I'm just I'm just
- 12:03Speaker 1: saying I took the time to write in the mass
- 12:04Speaker 1: thank you for filling in for Steve while he's not here. Now,
- 12:08Speaker 1: this isn't a scientific term, but it's popular in the
- 12:10Speaker 1: mushroom hunting community. LBMs are largely avoided by foragers because
- 12:15Speaker 1: the group doesn't contain many choice edibles. Some LBMs are
- 12:18Speaker 1: in the psychedelic category, while others can kill you. If
- 12:21Speaker 1: you're new to foraging, it's best to just avoid LBMs altogether.
- 12:26Speaker 1: You even said the word mushroom after the question was asked.
- 12:31Speaker 1: Steve would have chopped your head off. Oh yeah, that's
- 12:34Speaker 1: because he's horribly insecure. It's got nothing to do with
- 12:39Speaker 1: the game. That's just personal thing. We're onto question right.
- 12:44Speaker 1: The topic is hunting. This next great question meter trivia
- 12:48Speaker 1: with no Steve Vernilla aka roast step. You know what.
- 12:55Speaker 1: I was pretty sure that's what he would evolve into.
- 12:57Speaker 1: And here we are. How can we're not roast and
- 12:59Speaker 1: brody at all? It'd be over his head? Get it now?
- 13:10Speaker 1: The topic is haunting. This next great question comes to
- 13:12Speaker 1: us via Tom Marshall. If you have a question you
- 13:15Speaker 1: think is right for Meat Eater Trivia, you can send
- 13:16Speaker 1: it to trivia at the meat eater dot com. A
- 13:20Speaker 1: bench leg deer is a hybrid of what two animals?
- 13:26Speaker 1: A bench leg deer is a hybrid of what two animals?
- 13:30Speaker 1: Bench bench, bench, b E N c H A bench
- 13:35Speaker 1: leg I've never heard of it? Nah, if me and
- 13:38Speaker 1: Seth hadn't heard of it at A hybrid of a
- 13:46Speaker 1: bench leg deer is a hybrid of what two animals.
- 13:51Speaker 1: Nobody knew this one off the bat gonna be a
- 13:55Speaker 1: lot of educated guesses in the room. M that doesn't
- 14:01Speaker 1: make any sense. Damn, mine doesn't make sense either. I
- 14:06Speaker 1: don't think mine's even possible. Game. I think about it
- 14:10Speaker 1: a bench leg deer. I'm going off of regional colloquialism.
- 14:14Speaker 1: Does everybody have an answer? Ricky's furiously writing, Yeah, but
- 14:21Speaker 1: you just write down two animals, but climent of abstract
- 14:28Speaker 1: to the paper paper she's about to put out about
- 14:31Speaker 1: these two drawing a picture of a bench bench leg deer.
- 14:41Speaker 1: Is this possible? I don't know. We'll find out. Go
- 14:43Speaker 1: ahead and reveal your answers. We have Cal saying a
- 14:46Speaker 1: mule deer and a white tail, Gabby saying a coyote
- 14:49Speaker 1: and a deer. Clay saying a mule deer and a blacktail,
- 14:52Speaker 1: Karns saying a moose and a deer, Rick saying a
- 14:56Speaker 1: fallow deer and a mule deer, Said saying a white
- 14:59Speaker 1: tail in a ka and Yannis saying a blacktail and
- 15:03Speaker 1: a mule deer. Jannis is on fire, it is a
- 15:07Speaker 1: black tail. And but that they're like, there's such a
- 15:16Speaker 1: debate on in areas of whether it is a mule
- 15:19Speaker 1: deer or a blacktail anyway that I said, Oh, that
- 15:22Speaker 1: doesn't make any sense or too close most bench leg
- 15:25Speaker 1: I even heard of, you know, mating, So oh really
- 15:29Speaker 1: not why they call them? Sorry, huh why do they
- 15:33Speaker 1: call them? You know, I couldn't get to the bottom
- 15:35Speaker 1: of why they call them that. Um I found I
- 15:39Speaker 1: found a theory and a forum online. So you're going
- 15:42Speaker 1: to accept all answers on those that there's something like
- 15:45Speaker 1: a bench leg horse. Is that right? There's something like
- 15:49Speaker 1: a bench leg horse that has like shorter legs and
- 15:52Speaker 1: like more of a barrel like body. So that's where
- 15:55Speaker 1: this comes from. I don't know, but I couldn't find
- 15:57Speaker 1: anywhere else. Now, most bench legs appear like furniture. Let's
- 16:01Speaker 1: make most bench legs appear in the Pacific Northwest. While
- 16:05Speaker 1: Boone and Crockett doesn't track bench leg records, Washington and
- 16:08Speaker 1: Oregon kind of do. Both states have records for cascade blacktails,
- 16:12Speaker 1: which are deer killed in an area where blacktail and
- 16:15Speaker 1: mule deer herds overlap. We're onto question five. We'll get
- 16:20Speaker 1: a scoreboard update after this build the engineer. It's like
- 16:23Speaker 1: in California, it's always like they really want it to
- 16:26Speaker 1: be a blacktail, even though it looks very much like
- 16:29Speaker 1: a mule deer, right, because it's going to score away
- 16:31Speaker 1: more as a blacktail. Yeah. Yeah, it's either a kind
- 16:34Speaker 1: of a small, okay mule deer or a giant exactly.
- 16:38Speaker 1: You know, talking about mule deer. Every I think probably
- 16:42Speaker 1: every community in the East where there's only whitetails has
- 16:46Speaker 1: some story of mule deer being released back in the
- 16:49Speaker 1: forties and fifties. That sounds like an episode of bear Grease. Yeah,
- 16:52Speaker 1: I've never thought of it before, but like there's guys
- 16:55Speaker 1: that just swear to me that in the Ozarks they
- 16:57Speaker 1: release mule deer like in the sixties, and there's probably
- 17:00Speaker 1: you know, it's because somebody killed like a fourty G
- 17:02Speaker 1: two book I Like It coming in September of twenty
- 17:06Speaker 1: twenty two from the Bear Grease podcast. It'll be two
- 17:08Speaker 1: minutes long. There we go, it didn't happen. It'll be
- 17:11Speaker 1: my intro and then be saying this didn't happen. Roll
- 17:15Speaker 1: the ads and question five. The topic is gear. Nine
- 17:20Speaker 1: states have an official state firearm name one of them.
- 17:26Speaker 1: Nine states have an official state firearm name, one of
- 17:30Speaker 1: them the state or the firearm the state. It's good question, Clay,
- 17:35Speaker 1: name the state? Did you get it? You know this? No?
- 17:41Speaker 1: I don't either. Does everybody have an answer? Now? Confidence, Well,
- 17:46Speaker 1: there's fifty state, there's always there's always a state that
- 17:52Speaker 1: is gonna be pretty heavily involved in pro gun type stuff. California,
- 17:57Speaker 1: you mean, don't give my answer? Go ahead and reveal
- 18:01Speaker 1: your answers. We have cal saying New York, Gabby saying Wisconsin,
- 18:05Speaker 1: Clay saying Wyoming, Krin saying West Virginia, Rick saying Kentucky,
- 18:09Speaker 1: Seth saying Pennsylvania, in Yana saying Texas. The correct answer
- 18:14Speaker 1: is Alaska, Arizona, Indiana, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, and
- 18:20Speaker 1: West Virginia. That was your guest. As soon as you
- 18:25Speaker 1: have yes, do you know what they are? So the
- 18:30Speaker 1: first state to do this was a Utah in twenty eleven,
- 18:33Speaker 1: when it designated the M nineteen eleven pistol as its
- 18:36Speaker 1: official state gun. Other notable state firearms include Kentucky and
- 18:40Speaker 1: the Kentucky Long Rifle, Pennsylvania and the Pennsylvania Long Rifle,
- 18:44Speaker 1: West Virginia and the Hall Model eighteen nineteen flintlock, and
- 18:48Speaker 1: Alaska in the pre nineteen sixty four Winchester Model seventy.
- 18:52Speaker 1: Oh shit, that's cool. What that was? Texas on the list?
- 18:56Speaker 1: Texas was on there. I think there's was a cult.
- 18:58Speaker 1: Everyone certain is already five for five? What what I mean?
- 19:07Speaker 1: And in nineteen eleven idea John Moses Browning is that
- 19:13Speaker 1: it was from Utah. Yeah, definitely a Utah. There's the
- 19:17Speaker 1: Browning Museums in Augutah. Browning was from Utah and he's
- 19:22Speaker 1: burning firearms. That's why we got you here. You go, well,
- 19:25Speaker 1: why didn't you have that? As a damn question Spencer
- 19:27Speaker 1: and Utah again was the first day to do it
- 19:30Speaker 1: in two thousand and eleven, so expect more states to come.
- 19:32Speaker 1: That's a curveball too, like twenty eleven. You think that
- 19:36Speaker 1: would be older. But Phil hit us with a scoreboard update. Uh,
- 19:42Speaker 1: let's see yet to put herself on the board. Gabby
- 19:48Speaker 1: rounding up. Next, We got Corin and Rick with one.
- 19:52Speaker 1: Then Seth and Cow and Clay all have two points.
- 19:56Speaker 1: Good Gravy and man just just flying out there in
- 20:00Speaker 1: the lead. Beat down, beat down. We'll see if we
- 20:05Speaker 1: can trip them up. Question six. The topic is public lands.
- 20:18Speaker 1: How many acres are in a section of land? How
- 20:23Speaker 1: many acres are in a section of land? Some very
- 20:26Speaker 1: confident answers in the dream Cow, do you not know this?
- 20:32Speaker 1: I already wrote my my numbers down very very quick
- 20:35Speaker 1: answers again, how many acres in a section of land?
