- 1:37with Thanksgiving, but there's a great Thanksgiving message that I thought appropriate to play
- 1:42this time of year. In Johnny's post episode remarks prior to giving details on
- 1:48next week's show. So this program is from November eighteenth, nineteen fifty six,
- 1:53and the title is the Mark Matter. You would it's time now for
- 2:01Dollar. This is in Porter. Mister Dollar, you called my office.
- 2:06Yes, I'd like to see you as soon as I can, mister Porter,
- 2:07Well, of course, how long have you been in town? About
- 2:10a half an hour? Are you all squared away? I've got a rum
- 2:14and I've had a band, that's what you mean. Well, then,
- 2:15I guess you're ready to go to work. I will be as soon as
- 2:17I put on some pants. You sounded a rush. I'm always in a
- 2:21rush when I think somebody might be chipping us out of one hundred thousand dollars.
- 2:32Bob Bailey in the Transcribed Adventures of the Man with the Action Packed Expencer
- 2:37Coud America's Fabulous Freelance Insurance Investigatory, It's truly Johnny Dollar. Expense account submitted
- 2:55by Special Investigator Johnny Dollar to Western Life and Trust Company, eight twenty six,
- 3:00Spear Boulevard, Hertford, Connecticut. The following is an account of expenses
- 3:05incurred during my investigation of the Markham Matter. Expense account adam one one hundred
- 3:12and forty three dollars and sixty nine cents air transportation from Hartford to San Francisco.
- 3:15I had him two seventeen dollars for incidentals along the way, including transportation
- 3:20from the airport at the Saint Francis Hotel. I walked the eight blocks to
- 3:23the Commodore Building, where Ed Porter had his office on the fourth floor.
- 3:28He was a short, thin insurance broker with a face like a tight drum.
- 3:31He apologized for the clammy weather as oh or his fault. He asked
- 3:35me how things were out on the East coast and invited me to sit down,
- 3:38and looked as uncomfortable as he was. I got the telegram you were
- 3:43coming last night, investigator. I've never met one in all my years in
- 3:46the business. Must be very interesting work. Yeah. Look, I don't
- 3:51want to take up too much of your time, mister Porter, but I
- 3:53would like to get some information from you. Oh, certainly, mister Dollars.
- 3:57What can you tell me about a man named Floyd Markham. Markham,
- 4:00Well, he's the husband of a client of mine. I've met him,
- 4:02but I really can't tell you too much about him. My dealings have always
- 4:05been with missus Markham. If she's my customer, then tell me about Missus
- 4:10Markham. Oh, certainly, I'm not going to ask why. I'm sure
- 4:15you have a good reason for coming all the way to San Francisco. The
- 4:17Home office thinks I have an excellent reason. He is Missus Markham. Well,
- 4:24I've known her for twenty years as a customer. She's wealthy, always
- 4:28has been, and she handles her money well, and she lives rather well.
- 4:31Missus Markhm is the one who has the money. Mister Markham is a
- 4:34salaried man and industrial engineer. Frankly, I think he depends on Missus Markham
- 4:40for his livelihood. These two checks were issuer to Missus Markham this year.
- 4:46Recognize him, Yes, yes, full payments on two endowment policies if fifty
- 4:53thousand dollars apiece and they've cleared the bank. Anything wrong with him? Nothing
- 4:58wrong with the checks on pay like this, I always take it in person.
- 5:01It's a custom, of course, to call and make an appointment and
- 5:04deliver the check to the client and try to sell a little more insurance in
- 5:09the bargain. Well, that's about the idea. Yes, anything strange about
- 5:13Missus Markham when you delivered either one of these checks. No, Before I
- 5:16left Hartford, I looked up for insurance records or premiums are always paid right
- 5:20on the button. Missus Markham doesn't have a business office or a business manager
- 5:25handling her affairs. The checks are always personal checks on her personal account.
- 5:30How can you explain why someone like that might forget a third indominant policy.
- 5:33Why no, Well there is a third endowment policy, but dured this month.
- 5:39I have the check with me for fifty thousand dollars. Yes, but
- 5:44this business of forget Floyd Markham called Hartford and spoke to the head of the
- 5:46endowmentt division. He explained that Missus Markham was ill and didn't know whether or
- 5:51not a third policy existed. He said he was checking for her. Uh
- 5:56huh. Now you say you've known Missus Markham over a period of twenty years.
- 6:00Yes, well, is she the kind of person whould forget fifty thousand
- 6:02dollars. No one forgets fifty thousand dollars. Did you notice that both of
- 6:08those checks were deposited in the Markham's joint account. No, so they were
- 6:16Maybe Missus Markham's feeling generous these days. Why do you say that, Well,
- 6:20they have a rather strange relationship as far as I've been able to receive.
- 6:24I mean, what money he makes is his and what she has is
- 6:27hers. Ah. I always like to get out of that house because they
- 6:30never seemed to me to be a very close couple in any way. But
- 6:34this seems to make sense, now, how's that, mister Porter? Well,
- 6:38now I called up and made an appointment to deliver both of these checks.
- 6:41The first time I went over, Missus Markham was ill, and the
- 6:44second time she had just stepped out for a few minutes. Who accepted the
- 6:47checks? Mister Markham both times? Yes, As a matter of fact,
- 6:53now that I think of it, he made the appointment on the phone both
- 6:56times. When was the last time you saw Missus Markham? Last spring?
- 7:03A check with the bank revealed that Missus Markham had not personally made a deposit
- 7:06since June the eighteenth. The deposit slips were initialed by Floyd Markham. The
- 7:13checks were endorsed by Leslie Markham. There had been no unusual withdrawals. Expense
- 7:20account out of three thirty dollars. Stenographic and notary services for the attached statements.
- 7:26Missus Markham has been having her hair done here for nearly ten years now,
- 7:30once a week every Thursday morning. Then she just stopped. I called
- 7:34her home and mister Markham informed me that she was away on an extended trip.
- 7:41Mister Markham called us it was last June and informed us that Missus Markham
- 7:46was resigning her membership in the Bridge Club. I telephoned the house twice to
- 7:49see what was the matter. Mister Markham answered both times and said Missus Markham
- 7:54was out. Well. She used to come in here two or three times
- 7:58a month. Let us go over the car from top to bottom. She
- 8:01hasn't been around now for seven or eight months. I don't know who's taking
- 8:03care of the car. Expencer account had him four to thirty cents three phone
- 8:11calls to the Markham residence. I didn't state in any particular business. I
- 8:16simply asked to speak to Missus Markham. Each time I called, a male
- 8:20voice answered. Each time. The male voice told me Missus Markham was out,
- 8:24she was ill, and she was away on a short trip. Industrial
- 8:31Management Limited, Floyd B. Markham, President, has a three room office
- 8:33suite near the Embarcadero. Ten years ago. It had been sensationally new and
- 8:37glassy. When I got there, the carpet was a little too thin,
- 8:41and the varnish a little too thin too. The whole place smelled faintly of
- 8:46mildews. Yes, I'd like to see mister Markham. Please, do you
- 8:50have an appointment? No, no, not exactly. My name is Harris.
- 8:54I'm with the Cleveland Pump Company pump company. Yes, we're setting in
- 8:58thirty eight of our installations of the new plan Valparaiso. Did you get my
- 9:03letter? Well, I'm sorry, I'm afraid. May I ask your name
- 9:07again? Harris Stephen B. Harris, Cleveland Pump Company. Oh yes,
- 9:13Well, mister Harris, I'm afraid mister Markham never received your letter. When
- 9:16did you mail it thirty days ago? Maybe it was two weeks? Well,
- 9:22tell mister Markham, I'm here and I'm sorry, mister Harris. Mister
- 9:24Markham isn't in the office just now? Ah? Well, our wives?
- 9:28Oh well, well, he won't be in today. As a matter of
- 9:35fact, he won't be in the rest of the week. Where can I
- 9:37call him? Well, I'm afraid that's impossible. Can I call him at
- 9:41home? No? Now, look, is he in business. Or isn't
- 9:45he, mister Harris, Mister Markham hasn't been in the office for six months
- 9:50or more. He's he's tied up on a rather long range project. What's
- 9:54your name? I'm miss Bidler. Why didn't you say that in the first
- 9:56place? Miss Bidler? Well? Who else can I talk to you?
- 10:01No one, I'm afraid you mean. That's all there is in this office,
- 10:05just you and him. When he feels like coming in, I'll tell
- 10:09mister Markham you were here. The Markham House was on fear Adellas Street,
- 10:16about six blocks from the Fairmont Hotel, stone walls, iron grill work,
- 10:20tangling ivy, an old house that had been built by rich people for rich
- 10:24people to live in the kind of shabby looking place that only New Yorkers and
- 10:28San Franciscans can get by with and still be called wealthy. I used dead
- 10:33Port's car with a Western Life and Trust company im on the door, parked
- 10:35it in the driveway as close as I could to the entrance. It was
- 10:41exactly one o'clock when the door opened. He was tall and pretty, with
- 10:46black hair and broad shoulders. Yes, is it I'd like to see missus
- 10:52Markham, please I'm mister Markham. Can I help you. My name's Dollar.
- 10:56I'm with Western Life and Trust Company. Mister Porter called you. No,
- 11:00he didn't. Oh, and I must have slept his mind. He
- 11:03said he was going to call. What's it about. I brought a check
- 11:05from missus Markham on her third endowment policy. Oh, well, i'll give
- 11:11it to her. She isn't in right now. Well, I'm supposed to
- 11:13deliver it to her. I'll come back another time. When she said,
- 11:18now, you can give it to me, I will see that she gets.
- 11:20I'm sorry, mister Markham, but I have a guy. I know
- 11:22you want to give her the check and try to sell her some more insurance.
- 11:26She's just not in the market, and you can say your little spiel
- 11:28where it'll do some good. Oh you must understand me, mister Markham.
- 11:31I have to deliver this to her in person. What's your name again,
- 11:35Dollar, Johnny Dollar, Come in. I'll wait till she comes back and
- 11:41make an appointment. Mister Porter told me he made it for three to Day's
- 11:45here, she's here, Come in. Why the run around there? Missus
- 11:48Markham is desperately ill. I don't want to disturb her with things like like
- 11:54this. I'm sorry to hear that. What's the trouble? Are you serious?
- 11:56Anemia? So if if you'll give me I have a report to make
- 12:01out when I delivered this. I just only took a minute to handle the
- 12:03check, and it'll be off my mind and off your mind. Oh look
- 12:07here, missus, didn't you call the company's home office about this check?
- 12:09I called because Missus Markham requested me to call. Oh yes, just wait
- 12:18here. In the little swirl of his exit, I smelled shaving lotion.
- 12:22I guessed at the brand name. I also guessed that his suit costs three
- 12:28hundred dollars, even if I didn't know what San Francisco Taylor had made it.
- 12:31The shirt to tie the shoes were expensive too. Yeah, mister Floyd
- 12:35Markham liked expensive things. I wondered if he dyed his hair to keep it
- 12:41all black. I wondered if he was forty five or fifty. I also
- 12:46wondered why, in a house of that size on that kind of street of
- 12:48servant hadn't answered the door. This way, mister beller. He led me
- 12:52up a flight of stairs and finally into a high ceiling room with a fireplace
- 12:56at one end. A gray haired woman with a sharp anger face was seated
- 13:00near the window, looking out of at the city in the bay. She
- 13:03didn't turn her head when we came into the room, but I could see
- 13:07that her eyes were watering and slightly glazed. Preaze. Don't take too long
- 13:11and don't upset her, Leslie, Leslie, dear, Yes, this is
- 13:20mister Dollar from the insurance company. He has something for you. Be a
- 13:24good girl, Leslie. Speak to mister Dollar. How do you do?
- 13:30And ask him? Yes, how is mister Porter? Oh, he's so
- 13:37fine, Missus mar confine. He'll be sorry to hear that you've been ill.
- 13:43I really would rather that you didn't tell mister Porter. I'm satisfied to
- 13:52make my own slow recovery and not worry any of my friends. He likes
- 14:01some sherry Floyd. Now you know what the doctor said, Leslie. Mister
- 14:05Doller, you'd like some cherry, wouldn't you? Why? Yes, I'd
- 14:09like that very much. I'm sorry, mister Dollar. It's absolutely forbidden,
- 14:13and you know that, dear. Do you have the check, mister Dollar,
- 14:20Yes, right here you are, missus wakhm, thank you. Is
- 14:28there anything else mister well, Leslie? Yes, what is it? Missus
- 14:35Markham, I'm very tired. Excuse me if I've seen him? Light?
- 14:46Good day, Good day, Missus Markham. Expense account at and five ten
- 14:54cents phone called a wet porter in his office. Yes, mister Dollar,
- 14:58look missus malcoms five to five, about one to twenty, black hair,
- 15:01gray streak to the right of the part, blue eyes, looks about forty
- 15:05years old and good forty. Why yes, that sounds like her. You
- 15:09mean you've seen her. I've seen what's left of him, mister Porter.
- 15:11Who good launch, He's not dead almost he's killing her, mister Porter.
- 15:15My guess is he's been at it for about six months. Act two of
- 15:33yours, truly, Johnny Dollar, in just a moment, nobody will take
- 15:39a frown at face value anymore. Now that the word has gotten around about
- 15:43Jack Benny's return to the air with Mary Livingston, Dennis Day Rochester, Don
- 15:48Wilson, Mel Blank, Frank Nelson, and mister Kitzel, nothing less than
- 15:50your very best smile will do for the occasion. Tonight and every Sunday night
- 15:56here CBS Radio's Jack Benny Show, and give yourself of humor a real workout.
- 16:02Now at two of yours truly, Johnny Dollar and the Markham matter.
- 16:17Take a rich old house on a ritual street in San Francisco, walk in
- 16:21with a legitimate insurance check for fifty thousand dollars, and tell a man named
- 16:23Floyd Markham you want to deliver to his wife. Tell him this when you
- 16:27know that no one has seen or heard from his wife in six months.
- 16:32Just tell him you want to see her. Insists that you see her.
- 16:36Then stand around and listen to him lie a couple of times. Then let
- 16:40him take you to her, give her the check, say goodbye. Twenty
- 16:45minutes after I walked out of the Markham's house and picked up at Porter.
- 16:49We drove back to the house and parked a hundred threet from the MSS.
- 16:53This is the darndest thing I ever heard of, mister Dollar. I'm not
- 16:56sure it's all clear to me. What's opposition? Oh, I wouldn't know
- 17:00that, mister Porter. That's up to the legal department. This much I'm
- 17:03sure of. Right now, Malcolm's already deposited one hundred thousand dollars of her
- 17:07insurance money into a joint account. If I'm not mistaken this last check,
- 17:11I'll go into that account too. Right now, while we're sitting here,
- 17:14she's probably endorsing that check. Well, then, I don't see where it's
- 17:17any about it. He he's making her endorse the check. He's making her
- 17:18stay in that house, in that room, away from everybody. How what
- 17:22way he said she was ill? You said she appeared ill. I don't
- 17:26know how he's doing it, but I'm going to find out. Are you
- 17:29sure this isn't all surmise on your part. You weren't in the room when
- 17:33she said, let's have some sherry. Please, let's have some sherry.
- 17:37I must be she was really trying to say. She wanted him to leave
- 17:41the room so she could talk to me, so she could have one little
- 17:44minute to tell me what the matter is, what's going on. His next
- 17:48move is to deposit that check and one big withdrawal the whole one hundred and
- 17:52fifty thousand, and bye bye, Floyd Mark, mister dollar, I'm just
- 17:55an insurance Brokeride don't understand that. Well, how'd you like to be an
- 17:59investment to get her? For about ten minutes? Me? Yeah, you
- 18:02see that car that just pulled up the driveway, Yes, the girl driving
- 18:06it holds down that dummy office of Markham's. Her name's Bibler. She might
- 18:08be in on this with him. And that's mister Markham leaving the house.
- 18:11Good. Now, look, here's what you do. Follow them. I
- 18:14think I know where they're going, but you follow them and make sure where
- 18:15are they going to the bank to deposit that check? Well? Where are
- 18:21you going to have that glass of sherry? Mister Porter ed Porter pulled his
- 18:26hat down low over his face and put both hands on the wheel and took
- 18:30out. After that, fifty five catillaccidam. I crossed the street, went
- 18:33back up on the porch of the house and knocked. I didn't expect her
- 18:37to answer. I didn't expect anyone to answer, but I wanted to make
- 18:40sure. I went around to the garden. There wasn't a sound in the
- 18:45big old house. When I opened the garden door and went up the stairs
- 18:48again, the door to her room was closed. She wasn't by the window
- 18:56anymore. She was stretched out on the deman. I felt a wrist for
- 19:00a pulse. It was there, faint, but there about three inches up
- 19:04around there was a series of little marks. I left the one eyelet and
- 19:07fell her neck muscles. She was dope to the ears. Missus Markhamer,
- 19:14Missus Markham, can you hear me? Look, I've come to help you.
- 19:18Yeah me, yes, yes, I'm going to take you out of
- 19:23here. I don't be frightened. That's right, that's right, that's the
- 19:29ticket insurance company. Yes, I remember, Yes, that's right. Thank
- 19:36you for bringing my check. I don't want want what, Missus Markham,
- 19:45want any of my friends to worry. I'm proving, but I don't want
- 19:53them to know. I'm ill. Just say I'm out of down. Wow,
- 20:06he told you to say that, didn't he Yes, he told me
- 20:12exactly there, Sudah. Don't fool me. Please, don't fool me.
- 20:22What you will help me get out of here. You aren't fooling me,
- 20:27are you. I. I carried it downstairs and put her in my car
- 20:34and drove her to the Saint Regis Emergency Hospital. Expense ac countin of six
- 20:40one hundred dollars deposit with the hospital office. I explained as much as necessary
- 20:44to the intern, who promised to advise me when Missus Markat became rational.
- 20:48After that, I drove back to the house. Ed Porter's blue Coop was
- 20:52parked across the streets I didn't know what to do but come back here.
- 20:57And when I got back, I didn't know what to do. We listen
- 21:00to slow down, you're doing fun. Oh you were right, You were
- 21:03absolutely right. They went straight to the Bank of America to deposit that money.
- 21:06I kind of thought they might be back here by now. No.
- 21:07No, they're over at Angelo's having a drink and some dinner. I followed
- 21:11them there. You're getting to be quite a sleuth, mister Porter. Hell,
- 21:15try to do my best, use my head, mister Dolla. Did
- 21:18you talk to missus Mark as much as I could? She was doped.
- 21:21I took her out and put her in the hospital. Oh what should you
- 21:23have done that, mister Dollar. I could have left her up in that
- 21:26room to die. Mister Porter. Oh, yes, well, what's our
- 21:33next move? Ours? Certainly I can't quit now, mister Johnny, Well,
- 21:38let's go to Angelo's. Eddie head Porter settled the hat lower on his
- 21:47ears and gripped the wheel hider, and we took off for Angelo's on Stoka
- 21:49Street. When we got there, we didn't have to go inside to see
- 21:56if our people were still around. The Cadillacs. Nan was in the parking
- 21:59lot, so we took up a planet across the street. And why wait,
- 22:03why not go in and take them out of there and take them down
- 22:06to the police. That might blow the whole thing. Now we have to
- 22:08wait and see what missus Markham has to say when she's well enough to talk.
- 22:11Yeah, but I'm sure she'll have some charges to prefer. In the
- 22:15meantime, we wait and see. What's what? What do you think he'll
- 22:18do when he goes home and pines her gone? It'll be pretty interesting.
- 22:22What do you think he'll do? Will? I imagine he'll he'll think she
- 22:27got up and walked down. No, No, he knows better than that.
- 22:30He's had her doped up for six months. He knows he can go
- 22:33out of the house and she'll stay right where he left her while he's gone,
- 22:36that is. But then he'll know that she had help. That's more
- 22:40like it, mister Porter. I liked Eddie. It gives me kind of
- 22:45a feeling. Okay, Eddie, I'll answer the question, Oh, well,
- 22:48what'll he do? Well, he'll try to get out of town.
- 22:53That's it. He'll try to leave town. He'll know that he's headed.
- 22:56Come on, huh, they're pulling out. We followed them to a cocktail
- 23:03lounge near the Presidio. They waited around outside the place for two hours.
- 23:07Expense account adem seven twenty five cents. I called the Saint Regis Receiving Hospital.
- 23:12Missus Markham's condition was unchanged. I'd have eate two dollars to Habgar's,
- 23:17two cokes and cigarettes for mister Porter and myself. We had just finished eating
- 23:21when Floyd Markham's Cadillac turned out onto the street. We followed it for ten
- 23:25minutes. When Markham parked in a dark hill, we cut our lights and
- 23:27came to a stop. Mister dollar, Yeddie, can you see what they're
- 23:33doing? Yeah? What nicking? Huh? Nicking? You know I should
- 23:42have telephoned my wife. At twelve ten, Floyd Markham turned the car around
- 23:49and drove back into town. We followed once more. We saw him double
- 23:53park outside a four story apartment house on a steep hill. Let the woman
- 23:56out, then drive on. Yeah, Johnny, think you can handle something
- 24:02else a whole I'd love to Women sometimes talk a lot easier than men.
- 24:04You keep on him when he finds his wife absent. I want to know
- 24:07where he goes, wherever it is, I'll let you know, are you
- 24:11gonna shake her down? Something like that? Get going. I watched my
- 24:21new assistant investigator follow out after Markham's Cadillac. Then I went inside the apartment
- 24:26house. I Bidler was on the mailbox of apartment one oh four. I
- 24:30walked down the hall. Listen a minute and give it a try. Yes,
- 24:41Well, what on earth are you doing? I'm here to see you,

- 30:44Johnny Dollar, Roy Rowan speaking welcome back, well a classic commentary at the
- 32:00end. In fact, some of the old time radio sets I've seen out
- 32:06there have actually just included a clip from that for some Thanksgiving sets, So
- 32:16a great and very thought provoking commentary. Also, I love how Johnny works
- 32:28through this episode. Really, it's just about knowing your stuff, recognizing signs,
- 32:32and being able to take action, which he does. And I also
- 32:37like the twist of the girlfriend not actually being in on it, which is
- 32:45kind of a nice departure from the typical detective radio program. All right,
- 32:52Well, on to some listener comments and feedback. Actually got quite a few
- 32:55comments regarding episode fourteen eleven Truly Matter. Bobby Lee Walker says, I can't
- 33:05believe my buddy Johnny got carjacked twice in the same night, but he does
- 33:10say that he likes the recurring characters. Becky says this is one of my
- 33:15favorites. Christy says really enjoyed this one, and Elizabeth says, good story.
