- 0:56Speaker 1: episode in years of recording. But he's going on. He's
- 1:00Speaker 1: got it. He's got his own stuff. He does his
- 1:03Speaker 1: own show, runs his own program. Um. He is launching
- 1:07Speaker 1: a new podcast which is called which is our gear
- 1:09Speaker 1: Talk Podcast, Which is Yanni a collaborative project between our
- 1:13Speaker 1: very own Yanni pou tell Us and Jordan's budd What
- 1:18Speaker 1: We're gonna do on our gear Talk podcast where they
- 1:20Speaker 1: just talk about all things gear, arguments about gear, what's
- 1:24Speaker 1: coming out, what they like, how they packed is everything
- 1:27Speaker 1: from the Gear world, deep dives on certain gear items,
- 1:30Speaker 1: history on gear and how it came to be the
- 1:32Speaker 1: way it is. Uh, that's launching. We're gonna put the

- 2:03Speaker 1: subscribe to it and it will be served to you
- 2:04Speaker 1: on its own feed. But again, we're gonna launch it
- 2:07Speaker 1: here on this feed just to make everybody aware of
- 2:09Speaker 1: Yanni's new show is Gear Talk Podcast. Okay everybody, this
- 2:20Speaker 1: is a special report because you got the source Krins
- 2:22Speaker 1: like um who those fellers that who those feathers that
- 2:26Speaker 1: broke the Watergate story Woodward and Bob Woodward and Carl Yeah,
- 2:33Speaker 1: that's like karn Um because krint found Krinn found. Our
- 2:40Speaker 1: are are a phenomenal connection to the mystery of Montana's
- 2:43Speaker 1: toilet man. Uh, and so we we have a special report.
- 2:47Speaker 1: I think, uh, Phil should put in like a special
- 2:49Speaker 1: report sound. All initial opinions are, this is genuine. What
- 2:54Speaker 1: you're about to see may disturb you for those of
- 3:03Speaker 1: you not to where I'm gonna. I'm gonna back way
- 3:05Speaker 1: up here. We recently, uh, a bunch of people send
- 3:11Speaker 1: us a story from Vice dot com. But we've now
- 3:14Speaker 1: we've officially out journalist out journalistic, that's a verb. We
- 3:19Speaker 1: out journalisted Vice at this point. Now we're passing them up.
- 3:24Speaker 1: But we had got turned onto a story by reporting
- 3:28Speaker 1: on Vice about a Montana man stuck in a vault
- 3:33Speaker 1: a vault toilet at a fishing access site. That's the
- 3:36Speaker 1: connection to this show is because we like, we spent
- 3:38Speaker 1: a lot of time talking about the outdoors, hunting, fishing obviously,
- 3:40Speaker 1: and so since it was a fishing access site, it
- 3:42Speaker 1: was fair game if you had gotten stuck in I
- 3:44Speaker 1: don't know, like at a Monsters rock festival or something
- 3:49Speaker 1: like that. It had nothing to you know what I mean,
- 3:51Speaker 1: It just be I would never even read the article,
- 3:54Speaker 1: but it's it's a fishing story deep down. You with
- 3:57Speaker 1: that Hayden, you catalog it under fishing story catalog. Now
- 4:02Speaker 1: we so a man who had allegedly gone in to
- 4:08Speaker 1: retrieve his phone got stuck in a pit toilet at
- 4:13Speaker 1: a fishing access site and spent some hours down there. Uh.
- 4:17Speaker 1: We were talking about how we would love to get
- 4:19Speaker 1: that gentleman on the show to talk about his adventure. Um,
- 4:26Speaker 1: he has not come forward. However, today we will hear
- 4:29Speaker 1: from we have here live in the studio, the American hero.
- 4:36Speaker 1: We have in the studio, the man who just made
- 4:41Speaker 1: the discovery and and performed the rescue. We've also got
- 4:46Speaker 1: just there's one of those things like this thing about
- 4:50Speaker 1: falling into a pit toilet, falling into an outhouse toilet
- 4:52Speaker 1: or climbing into one. At first felt like such a
- 4:56Speaker 1: weird anomaly, but we have received so much fee back
- 5:00Speaker 1: from people um about similar escapades that it's like it's
- 5:05Speaker 1: like we tapped into one of the like the hidden world,
- 5:09Speaker 1: a hidden world of this. Right away we heard from
- 5:11Speaker 1: a woman we got a picture. It's on if you
- 5:13Speaker 1: go on my Instagram, like at Steven Ornell, you'll see
- 5:15Speaker 1: a picture of a young lady crim dozer. Yeah, we
- 5:19Speaker 1: should make it. This should be our third calendar. That's
- 5:21Speaker 1: all I wanted yea. So we have a picture of
- 5:24Speaker 1: a young lady um suspended through the i guess the
- 5:28Speaker 1: pedestal of a pit toilet, trying to use her feet
- 5:32Speaker 1: to fish out a phone that fell in. We just recovered.
- 5:36Speaker 1: We just reported on another story of from a firefighter
- 5:40Speaker 1: out in New Jersey whose crew had to recover a
- 5:44Speaker 1: man who was down in the vault of a pit
- 5:46Speaker 1: toilet at a at a boat launch. Again it turned
- 5:50Speaker 1: out he was a fetishist. Uh. We then got from
- 5:57Speaker 1: we had a long letter from another person involved the
- 6:00Speaker 1: law enforcement who talked about what a recurring issue it
- 6:04Speaker 1: is with fetishists, and he spent some time with the
- 6:07Speaker 1: Forest Service and had a lot of run ins with them,
- 6:09Speaker 1: and he said the National forests really are the land
- 6:12Speaker 1: of many uses. Even describes a harrowing story of later
- 6:18Speaker 1: padding down a person that he had found in the
- 6:20Speaker 1: vault toilet to find that he had had filled his
- 6:23Speaker 1: pockets with the excrement found in said toilet. Some lift
- 6:32Speaker 1: operators who had to rescue an owl out of a
- 6:35Speaker 1: pit toilet and they had to lower their colleague down
- 6:38Speaker 1: into the quote cesspool of ship and piss and he
- 6:42Speaker 1: rescued the owl. It goes on and on. One person
- 6:49Speaker 1: even rolled that they even changed the structure of their
- 6:52Speaker 1: pit toilet things in order that there's not a beam
- 6:58Speaker 1: with which people can more easily get themselves in there,
- 7:02Speaker 1: because they imagine they're going to get out easily, but
- 7:05Speaker 1: they wind up getting so slicked up they can't get
- 7:07Speaker 1: purchase on the beam. So to prevent them from lowering
- 7:11Speaker 1: themselves in, they removed this thing. Where is his beam?
- 7:17Speaker 1: He didn't get into a lot of details, but he
- 7:18Speaker 1: mentioned like a structural He mentioned making a structural adjustment
- 7:22Speaker 1: that it wouldn't be like such a simple matter to
- 7:24Speaker 1: get down in there. So it's like a thing man,
- 7:30Speaker 1: you know, like you peel back the layers of the onion.
- 7:34Speaker 1: And everybody listening, most people listen have been into one
- 7:37Speaker 1: of these structures. Oh, I've stared down many a hole.
- 7:41Speaker 1: And i've because I read the signs about like don't
- 7:44Speaker 1: put weird stuff down in here because it's hard to
- 7:46Speaker 1: get it out. Yeah, you know, who we should have
- 7:48Speaker 1: had looking, but I'll look, we should have had Miles
- 7:53Speaker 1: on to give us a little bit of insight. Yeah,
- 7:55Speaker 1: because he's the guy that when you put weird stuff in,
- 7:58Speaker 1: he's the guy that has to try to act going
- 8:00Speaker 1: to take care of it. Yeah, he manages a lot
- 8:02Speaker 1: of the fishing accessish toilet states in eastern Montana. He
- 8:06Speaker 1: would have been a great source. Yeah. Maybe what he'll
- 8:08Speaker 1: come on when we get the guy that actually was
- 8:10Speaker 1: in there, when he comes on, I don't know that
- 8:14Speaker 1: he's coming forward. Joe, can you introduced self? Yeah, my
- 8:20Speaker 1: name's Joe Murray, live in Helena, and I'm the lucky
- 8:23Speaker 1: guy that found the guy in the vault toilet. Give
- 8:26Speaker 1: everybody your professional background, because this is your professional background.
- 8:29Speaker 1: Just makes you sound like a straight shooter. I don't
- 8:32Speaker 1: know if you are, but it's like if I heard that,
- 8:33Speaker 1: I'm like, that guy's got your straight shoot. Yeah. Well,
- 8:36Speaker 1: uh retired two years ago. Uh as the Deputy Legislative
- 8:41Speaker 1: Auditor for the state of Montana. Yeah, guy like that.
- 8:45Speaker 1: The guy like that as a mess round. No, no, no,
- 8:48Speaker 1: I am a straight shooter. Tell it like it is.
- 8:52Speaker 1: And you have your your wife is joining you today? Yeah,
- 8:54Speaker 1: my my my wife Kristen is here with me. Who
- 8:58Speaker 1: were you weren't there for the adventure that's about this
- 9:04Speaker 1: phenomenal okay, okay, And then you have your friend Bruce
- 9:08Speaker 1: how you doing who we can thank for. We'll hear
- 9:11Speaker 1: the story about how we found you, guys, and then
- 9:13Speaker 1: Bruce's wife Dorothy Dorothy. Okay, al right, first off, before
- 9:19Speaker 1: we get into the before we get into that faithful,
- 9:21Speaker 1: faithful day, how did it wind up that? How did krinn?
- 9:25Speaker 1: How did it go that? We gotta hold you guys? Yeah,
- 9:29Speaker 1: that was that was me. I. Joe and I've known
- 9:32Speaker 1: each other forever, yes, high school, firefighting together, knowing each
- 9:39Speaker 1: other for five years. And Joe's got a history recently
- 9:42Speaker 1: of doing just terrible photoshop stuff and sending it to me.
- 9:45Speaker 1: And he had photoshop. I was convinced he had photoshop
- 9:48Speaker 1: this picture of him standing next to this ball toilet.
- 9:52Speaker 1: I mean, it was just it was so terrible. I
- 9:53Speaker 1: didn't even respond to it. So since retirement, this is
- 9:55Speaker 1: what he's been up. This is no longer I trade shooting. Yeah, yeah,
- 10:03Speaker 1: that kind of blows easily. Yeah, he's into making fake
- 10:07Speaker 1: stuff after straight a whole career straight shooting, after several
- 10:13Speaker 1: years of making stuff up? Why would I believe this?
- 10:17Speaker 1: And he just so happened in a few weeks after
- 10:19Speaker 1: the year. What was the photo he sent you of
- 10:21Speaker 1: him standing at the at the toilet with the individual
- 10:25Speaker 1: stuck up to his neck and Joe standing there with
- 10:28Speaker 1: these I was convinced it was like Mickey Mouse rubber
- 10:31Speaker 1: gloves on that he had he had mocked up and
- 10:34Speaker 1: and I just looked at it, and it's like looking
- 10:36Speaker 1: at one of those glory pictures of Sasquatch. You just like,
- 10:39Speaker 1: who had snapped the photo? Did you snap? No? It
- 10:42Speaker 1: was it's the picture that was on Facebook. So there
- 10:45Speaker 1: was another couple that he'll talk about that were there,
- 10:48Speaker 1: and she's the one who took the picture. Yes, yeah,
- 10:52Speaker 1: so she she just kind of casually walked over and
- 10:56Speaker 1: clicked it real quick. And social media. Yeah, so you
- 11:00Speaker 1: don't know if she posted it or she sent it
- 11:04Speaker 1: to somebody and then they posted it. So we have
- 11:07Speaker 1: no idea how that got on Facebook. And when Joe
- 11:11Speaker 1: was after I realized after a night of sitting on
- 11:14Speaker 1: our deck and having a couple of beers, and Joe
- 11:16Speaker 1: starts telling the story, and I realized, my god, this
- 11:19Speaker 1: thing is true. So you were originally just dismissed it.
- 11:22Speaker 1: Oh yeah, I didn't give it two seconds worth of thought,
- 11:27Speaker 1: just just because I knew Joe and anyway, as he's
- 11:30Speaker 1: getting into this story, and I'm realizing, my god, this
- 11:33Speaker 1: is a true story, atly some parts of it. The
- 11:35Speaker 1: other couple that was sitting there with us, she bring
- 11:39Speaker 1: quietly brings up a little bit of your podcast earlier on,
- 11:43Speaker 1: and I'm starting to kind of like, oh my god, Joe,
- 11:46Speaker 1: you gotta you gotta finish the rest of the story.
- 11:48Speaker 1: I mean, this thing is out there and nobody knows
- 11:49Speaker 1: really quite what happened. You got to tell this story,
- 11:52Speaker 1: and Joe felt that the reporting that we did was
- 11:54Speaker 1: a little off. It was it was by far the
- 11:58Speaker 1: most accurate, but it was still a little bit off.
- 12:01Speaker 1: And Uh, Joe tells me, well, yeah, you know, I
- 12:03Speaker 1: sent a message to you know, Steve on Instagram. I
- 12:06Speaker 1: don't know why he hasn't gotten back to me. And
- 12:10Speaker 1: I never have. I just never. I an't I alre'tven
- 12:14Speaker 1: know how to go about getting in there and looking
- 12:16Speaker 1: at This was on a Saturday of Labor Day weekend,
- 12:19Speaker 1: So Sunday morning, Joe and uh Christian and their friends
- 12:23Speaker 1: Dan and Cathy, they all head back to Helena and Uh,
- 12:27Speaker 1: the dust hadn't cleared my driveway, and I went flying
- 12:31Speaker 1: inside and I just went right to you know, like
- 12:33Speaker 1: meat eater dot com. And I just started finding places
- 12:35Speaker 1: to actually send an email, not just an Instagram post,
- 12:39Speaker 1: and uh, send something off. It's Labor Day weekend, Sunday morning.
- 12:44Speaker 1: You know, of course, nothing's happening on that day. Monday's
- 12:47Speaker 1: a holiday, nothing's happening. By the time Tuesday comes around,
- 12:51Speaker 1: I've kind of forgotten the whole thing. And I go
- 12:53Speaker 1: downtown and do something. I come home and geez, my
- 12:59Speaker 1: phone's lit up. I've got I've got a couple of
- 13:02Speaker 1: phone calls I've missed from a number that I doesn't
- 13:04Speaker 1: I don't recognize. It's Karin's number. Followed up with a
- 13:08Speaker 1: text message and it's a good thing you you texted,
- 13:11Speaker 1: because I wouldn't have paid any attention. And I play
- 13:14Speaker 1: the voicemail and as karinn and she's laughing so hard.
- 13:16Speaker 1: I can hardly get the I can hardly get the message.
- 13:20Speaker 1: And she's like, oh my god, Bruce, you've got to
- 13:23Speaker 1: call me. You've got to call me now. And she
- 13:26Speaker 1: had the text message to boot and so I called
- 13:28Speaker 1: her and she just starts laughing and she says, yes,
- 13:31Speaker 1: we want to we want to meet the guy Joe,
- 13:34Speaker 1: And uh, she says do a do an introduction via text,
- 13:38Speaker 1: you know, text Joe and Karin at the same time.
- 13:42Speaker 1: And so I did that and I literally sent the
- 13:45Speaker 1: text and I could just do a countdown three, two, one,
- 13:49Speaker 1: queue the phone, and Joe calls me. He's like, what
- 13:55Speaker 1: the hell. Well, you know what's funny about this is
- 14:00Speaker 1: since you didn't respond and you just ignored me. I
- 14:05Speaker 1: went on to Karin's uh Instagram, uh site or whatever
- 14:11Speaker 1: you call it, and I sent her a message and
- 14:13Speaker 1: I didn't. I mean, it literally wasn't ten seconds after
- 14:17Speaker 1: I sent this, I got that text from Bruce coincidence. Yeah,
- 14:22Speaker 1: it was weird. And so I was like, so that's
- 14:25Speaker 1: when I called him, and I said, I started to
- 14:28Speaker 1: respond via text, and I saw there was another number
- 14:30Speaker 1: on there who I obviously didn't know who it was,
- 14:32Speaker 1: and I thought, no, I better not because it wasn't
- 14:35Speaker 1: a very nice text, you know. But so I called
- 14:39Speaker 1: him and I said, what the hell, come on? He
- 14:42Speaker 1: goes nope, and he told me this story and he said,
- 14:45Speaker 1: you know, you need to call her. So I get
- 14:48Speaker 1: I after I phone said okay, I'll give her a call.
- 14:50Speaker 1: So I called and I started to leave a message
- 14:53Speaker 1: and then I heard the phone peeping through and then
- 14:55Speaker 1: made connection with Karin and we chatted for a while.
- 14:58Speaker 1: She goes, ahead, you want to do a video call
- 15:00Speaker 1: tomorrow and you know, I'd love to hear the story
- 15:02Speaker 1: and this and that and so yeah, so we set
- 15:04Speaker 1: one up and did a video call the next the
- 15:06Speaker 1: next day to excellent tell the story. And this is
- 15:10Speaker 1: a good little insight on how Korean conducts her business. Yeah, yeah,
- 15:14Speaker 1: she's really good this kind of stuff. She's really good.
- 15:18Speaker 1: But uh, you know, we had a great conversation, you know,
- 15:22Speaker 1: and then she hears, you know, my professional background, perus
- 15:26Speaker 1: professional background, and it's like, oh, this makes it even better.
- 15:29Speaker 1: And I said, well, I'll just walk you through the story.
- 15:34Speaker 1: And so I did, and here we are, you know,
- 15:38Speaker 1: doing a doing your podcast. So let's get into the day.
- 15:43Speaker 1: You what are you out doing the day of coming
- 15:48Speaker 1: back from uh, we had runted a vr I runted
- 15:52Speaker 1: a VR v O up just out of Sula. Uh
- 15:55Speaker 1: for our anniversary. Oh that's real man, Yeah, a little trip.
- 16:00Speaker 1: Loved that well, anniversary thirty two years gratulations. Yeah, and
- 16:06Speaker 1: uh so we always tried to do something and uh,
- 16:09Speaker 1: we used to spend a lot of time in that
- 16:11Speaker 1: area when we were dating, because back then I was
- 16:14Speaker 1: actually in banking. I was started Boise and then got
- 16:18Speaker 1: transferred to Salmon, Idaho, and that's where I met my wife.
- 16:22Speaker 1: Her dad was the forest supervisor over there, and and
- 16:26Speaker 1: so you know the Combs family over there, there's a
- 16:29Speaker 1: few of them. Actually, yeah, yeah, So I thought, you know,
- 16:34Speaker 1: it would be fun to go over there because we
- 16:35Speaker 1: used to go over there and spend time, you know,
- 16:38Speaker 1: messing around that country and were dating. So I thought
- 16:40Speaker 1: I'll do that. So we booked this v R. B O,
- 16:42Speaker 1: great little place over on the east fork of the
- 16:44Speaker 1: of the Bitter Ut, and we I don't know, We're
- 16:47Speaker 1: there three four days and fishing. Yeah, we fished a
- 16:50Speaker 1: little bit, did did some uh really nice hike back
- 16:54Speaker 1: into a place called Star Falls. Beautiful country. Um, and
- 17:00Speaker 1: we were on our way back from a nice romantic
- 17:05Speaker 1: anniversary weekend. Oh I'm hearing that sounds like a great trip.
- 17:12Speaker 1: And uh, you know, so when we went there, we
- 17:15Speaker 1: went through Missoula, said we'll just do a big loop.
- 17:17Speaker 1: So we stopped at a brewery and had some lunch
- 17:20Speaker 1: and stuff, then off to Sula and said, well, when
- 17:22Speaker 1: we go back, let's let's go back through the Big
- 17:25Speaker 1: Hole and so, um, you know, we got coffee and
- 17:30Speaker 1: water and we got out of Wisdom. Um, I don't
- 17:33Speaker 1: know ten miles or so, and I told Chris Esse God,
- 17:36Speaker 1: I gotta pee. And you're driving along the Big Hole River,
- 17:39Speaker 1: driving along the Big Hole River, and I said, I
- 17:43Speaker 1: have to pee And asked her do you have to go?
- 17:46Speaker 1: Which is always a yes, but this since and it
- 17:49Speaker 1: was a no. One she goes, can't you can just
- 17:51Speaker 1: wait till the rest area around the interstate and no, no. So,
- 17:55Speaker 1: you know a couple of usually I'll just pull over
- 17:57Speaker 1: on the side of the road, you know, sure, go
- 18:00Speaker 1: and I I started tune and I went, now, you know, Kristen,
- 18:03Speaker 1: if I stopped, she's she's gonna go. And uh so,
- 18:07Speaker 1: I thought, well, let's just pull into fish Trap. This
- 18:09Speaker 1: is this is the intimacy you get after you know,
- 18:14Speaker 1: you dial, You're like you're playing in ahead. What they
- 18:17Speaker 1: don't you don't you know more than they know about
- 18:19Speaker 1: when they're gonna want to be Yeah, I mean, well,
- 18:23Speaker 1: and I know my wife well enough that I could
- 18:25Speaker 1: stop literally every ten miles since she could pee, so
- 18:29Speaker 1: that we're moving on. But uh so, I said, well,
- 18:34Speaker 1: I'm just let's just stop at fish trap because my
- 18:36Speaker 1: wife actually likes that. When she's was heading back to
- 18:38Speaker 1: salmon and stuff, she'd always she stopped there because it
- 18:41Speaker 1: was kind of a easy stop and quick and go.
- 18:45Speaker 1: So I pulled in there. And when we pulled in,
- 18:50Speaker 1: which was really surprising, there was not another soul. They're
- 18:55Speaker 1: usually there'll be a camper camp there. Uh, you know,
- 18:58Speaker 1: maybe somebody weighed fish and boat launch and I you know,
- 19:01Speaker 1: I think it was really hot. I mean it was
- 19:04Speaker 1: ninety degrees at least, and and and I think the
- 19:07Speaker 1: big hole was on hood owl restrictions at this point,
- 19:11Speaker 1: so there wasn't anybody tell people that means just well, basically,
- 19:15Speaker 1: whod all the restrictions are? You gotta stop fishing on
- 19:19Speaker 1: the river at two two o'clock in the afternoon, and
- 19:21Speaker 1: so you can't fish from two to seven in the
- 19:25Speaker 1: morning or six in the morning or something like that
- 19:27Speaker 1: because the water temperatures like it's like it's too too
- 19:32Speaker 1: hard on fish. Yeah. Yeah, the water temperature gets over
- 19:34Speaker 1: and it's sixty eight degrees or something at seventy degrees,
- 19:37Speaker 1: and then if you catch them and let them go,
- 19:39Speaker 1: mortality mortality goes. Yeah. So I pulled in there and
- 19:44Speaker 1: there was nobody there, and and you know, I'm sitting
- 19:47Speaker 1: there thinking to myself, I'll watch the I'll turn around
- 19:49Speaker 1: the corner to the vault toilet and there'll be one
- 19:52Speaker 1: car there. And I turned around and there was a
- 19:55Speaker 1: pick up there, and I was just like, nice pickup. Oh,
- 20:00Speaker 1: it looks like a work truck. Um, any particular company
- 20:03Speaker 1: written on it. Not that I noticed plate number. I
- 20:14Speaker 1: I don't have the plate number memorized. Um, but I
- 20:19Speaker 1: thought crap. So I just parked and I thought, well,
- 20:23Speaker 1: I'll just walk over. I was actually just gonna walk
- 20:26Speaker 1: over to the bushes just yonder. Yeah. Uh. I thought no,
- 20:31Speaker 1: My luck is there's a couple of trails. And I thought,
- 20:34Speaker 1: as soon as I do that, whoever's in that truck
- 20:37Speaker 1: is gonna come walking out. Now I'm just exact. I
- 20:40Speaker 1: thought I'll just go use the the vault toilet. So,
- 20:44Speaker 1: but did you call the vault toilet prior? I probably
- 20:50Speaker 1: called it an outhouse. After this, after this whole thing,
- 20:55Speaker 1: for sure, Yeah, yeah, it's gonna for sure I'm gonna
- 21:00Speaker 1: like start really differentiating. Uh yeah, I'm becoming you know.
- 21:06Speaker 1: It made me more professional and how I call, Oh, yeah,
- 21:09Speaker 1: something out the guy that really knows what's going on,
- 21:11Speaker 1: that's right. Yeah. So anyway, I walked up to the door,
- 21:15Speaker 1: grabbed the handle. It's locked, and I'm like, so I thought, well,
- 21:20Speaker 1: I'll just go back to the bush. Yeah. I started
- 21:23Speaker 1: walking away and I hear a guy go hello, and
- 21:30Speaker 1: I go, you know, just kind of hello, you know,
- 21:34Speaker 1: you like into myself. Yeah, I know you're in the
- 21:36Speaker 1: doors locked and uh. So I started to keep walking
- 21:40Speaker 1: and night Christen, where are you right now? So I
- 21:42Speaker 1: was in the truck then, just waiting for him to
- 21:45Speaker 1: get out, because actually I did have to go after that. Yeah,
- 21:52Speaker 1: is that all ending? It's true? You do? You learn
- 21:56Speaker 1: there after thirty two years. So I was waiting my turn.
- 22:01Speaker 1: So here's the hello and I hello, and uh and
- 22:08Speaker 1: so uh, all of a sudden, he goes, I need help,
- 22:13Speaker 1: and I said, you need help? What's what's going on?
- 22:17Speaker 1: It was I dropped my phone in the toilet and
- 22:22Speaker 1: I went in after it and I'm stuck. And I went,
- 22:26Speaker 1: you're stuck and he goes, yeah, I'm stuck. I said,
- 22:30Speaker 1: is your head down in the toilet? Because I you know,
- 22:33Speaker 1: I envisioned he crawled in head first and trying to
- 22:37Speaker 1: fish it out. He goes, no, my head's above the toilet.
- 22:41Speaker 1: I'm like, oh, okay, all right, well I know you
- 22:45Speaker 1: can at least your heads above you know, water, and
- 22:52Speaker 1: and so I said, hang on a minute, I've got
- 22:55Speaker 1: I'm gonna go to my truck and pull out a
- 22:57Speaker 1: couple of screwdrivers tools, just to see if I can
- 23:00Speaker 1: get this door open somehow. And he goes, okay, he's calm,
- 23:05Speaker 1: he's calm, pretty calm. And I said, how long have
- 23:07Speaker 1: you been in there? And he goes, I've been in
- 23:10Speaker 1: here for three hours, and you're the first person to stop.
- 23:14Speaker 1: And I went three hours and he goes, yeah, three hours.
- 23:18Speaker 1: And he goes, I've been trying to crawl out of this,
- 23:20Speaker 1: and I'm all scraped up and I'm I'm just beat.
- 23:23Speaker 1: I'm absolutely whipped. I can't get I can't get myself out.
- 23:27Speaker 1: And I said, okay, all right, And I'm still in
- 23:30Speaker 1: my mind trying to process how somebody would crawl down into,
- 23:35Speaker 1: you know, the pedestal toilet, you know, I just you know.
- 23:39Speaker 1: So I walked back to my truck and I opened
- 23:42Speaker 1: my back door to lifted my seat up and get
- 23:45Speaker 1: a couple of screw drivers. UM and I. Kristen looked
- 23:51Speaker 1: at me, and she goes, what's wrong, because I had
- 23:57Speaker 1: to look on his face like, holy sh it, something
- 24:00Speaker 1: just happening, and and I said, I just looked at
- 24:05Speaker 1: her and I went, uh, there's a guy. The doors
- 24:10Speaker 1: locked and the guys in there stuck in the toilet.
- 24:14Speaker 1: He's in the toilet. And she goes, what the hell,
- 24:18Speaker 1: what you can't I said, that's what he told me.
- 24:21Speaker 1: Needs help. I got to try to get him out.
- 24:23Speaker 1: And she's like, oh God. So she gets out. So
- 24:27Speaker 1: I walked over and from the reason I grabbed screw drivers.
- 24:31Speaker 1: You know, of course, that particular vault toilet you know,
- 24:34Speaker 1: doesn't just have the button lock on the handle, it's
- 24:38Speaker 1: got a bolt, got dead bolt lock. I thought, well,
- 24:43Speaker 1: I don't think I don't know if I can get
- 24:44Speaker 1: that get in there with you know, through with that.
- 24:47Speaker 1: So I told the guy, said, hey, I'm gonna there's
- 24:49Speaker 1: a vent on the bottom of the door for at
- 24:52Speaker 1: least most of the FWP sites, just for ventilation. So
- 24:57Speaker 1: I told the guy said, hey, I'm going to take
- 24:59Speaker 1: the this vent door off and I'm gonna see if
- 25:03Speaker 1: I can get down, just kick the the vent out
- 25:06Speaker 1: on your side. And he goes, well, it's it's screwed
- 25:08Speaker 1: in over here, and I said, yeah, I realized that,
- 25:10Speaker 1: but if I can just kick it hard enough, I
- 25:12Speaker 1: might be able to They're not screwed in very far.
- 25:13Speaker 1: I might be able to break through. And he goes, okay.
- 25:16Speaker 1: So I took the screws off the vent and except
- 25:21Speaker 1: one didn't come out, so I had to bend it
- 25:22Speaker 1: back and I sat down and I just started kicking
- 25:26Speaker 1: the screen. I kicked it, I don't know, probably a
- 25:29Speaker 1: dozen times. And I told him, I said, well, you're right,
- 25:32Speaker 1: I can't. I can't get through this. I can't break
- 25:36Speaker 1: it down. They're they're screwed in better than I thought.
- 25:39Speaker 1: He goes okay, and I said, well, just hanking tough.
- 25:41Speaker 1: I'm gonna see if I can jim me this lock somehow.
- 25:46Speaker 1: So um, so I took a flathead screw driver and
- 25:50Speaker 1: I stuck it into the dead bolt and just started
- 25:54Speaker 1: reefing on it, you know, just you know, thinking I'm
- 25:57Speaker 1: never going to get this open, and and uh, you know,
- 26:01Speaker 1: lo and behold. After about the sixth three pulled jim
- 26:06Speaker 1: In did enough and it's the door popped open. Oh yeah,
- 26:18Speaker 1: when that popped open, it was you know again, I'm
- 26:23Speaker 1: talking it's ninety degrees by this time, and you know,
- 26:28Speaker 1: it a wall of stench. Just it just about knocked
- 26:33Speaker 1: me over, absolutely worse than normal. There's a reason they
- 26:39Speaker 1: tell you to keep the lids closer, to keep the
- 26:41Speaker 1: lids closed. But um so, once I kind of got
- 26:46Speaker 1: through the whole, man, that's that's that's awful. I I
- 26:50Speaker 1: looked expecting to see a guy stuck in the pedestal,
- 26:55Speaker 1: but the pedestal toilet is laying on the floor and
- 27:00Speaker 1: he's in the hole and as I can see is
- 27:02Speaker 1: his head and you know, he's kind of resting with
- 27:06Speaker 1: his arms up on the on the floor. So he
- 27:08Speaker 1: had taken those toilets, that toilet often. I didn't know
- 27:12Speaker 1: you could do it. And then as soon as I
- 27:13Speaker 1: saw that, I went, oh, that's how they clean those out,
- 27:21Speaker 1: you know, because I was sure I was wondering, you know, God,
- 27:24Speaker 1: that's gotta be a pain in the butt. You know,
- 27:25Speaker 1: go get the septic truck or who whatever, pumps him
- 27:29Speaker 1: out and stick it down that and you know, never,
- 27:32Speaker 1: you know, it's not like I lay awake at night
- 27:33Speaker 1: wondering how they clean bolt toilets. But how how wide
- 27:37Speaker 1: is that? What's the aperture on that whole? Um? Oh? Three?
- 27:43Speaker 1: You know it's it's kind of it's just round dish,
- 27:47Speaker 1: maybe ovalish, three feet, you know. So he must have
- 27:53Speaker 1: had limited upper body strength because if you can get
- 27:56Speaker 1: your elbows up through a hole, well, he was so
- 28:04Speaker 1: so when I got when I saw him, you know,
- 28:08Speaker 1: when I when I saw his head, I didn't think much.
- 28:13Speaker 1: I just kind of thought, oh, this is weird. How old?
- 28:16Speaker 1: How old is he? Oh? I suppose he's in his
- 28:20Speaker 1: you know, early forties, only forties, younger than yeah, yeah,
- 28:25Speaker 1: are you older than young forties? Okay, so yeah, younger,
- 28:29Speaker 1: probably younger than you. Certainly younger than me. Like I
- 28:33Speaker 1: somehow I like to picture older than me. Yeah, well
- 28:36Speaker 1: we can do that. So I I I when I
- 28:45Speaker 1: got through and I walked up to him, I just
- 28:47Speaker 1: kind of went, hey, how you doing? And he goes, well,
- 28:53Speaker 1: I've been fucking better. So anyway, I said, yeah, I'm
- 28:58Speaker 1: sure you have. I'm sure you have. So I walked
- 29:00Speaker 1: up to him and I looked in. He pretty much
- 29:03Speaker 1: fills up the whole hole. I mean, he's a big
- 29:06Speaker 1: he's a big man. Um. But I looked. I went, oh,
- 29:12Speaker 1: he's naked. He doesn't have any clothes on. I turned
- 29:15Speaker 1: and I looked at the door, and I went, yeah,
- 29:16Speaker 1: he is naked. All his clothes are hanging on the
- 29:18Speaker 1: hook in the door. And I said, so you took
- 29:21Speaker 1: all your clothes off, and goes, Yeah. I didn't want
- 29:23Speaker 1: to get him dirty. So I hung him up and
- 29:25Speaker 1: crawl down in here and get it, get the phone,
- 29:27Speaker 1: and and and you know, and I was just gonna
- 29:31Speaker 1: crawl out, He goes, I just can't get myself out.
- 29:34Speaker 1: I just don't have the strength. And I keep getting
- 29:38Speaker 1: my body keeps getting stuck on the whole because he's he's,
- 29:42Speaker 1: he's he was a mountain of a man. Like, what's
- 29:47Speaker 1: what's the volume of waste down in the vault? Uh? Well,
- 29:55Speaker 1: I I I'll get into that little later. I can't
- 29:59Speaker 1: say exactly, only based on sound like the level of
- 30:02Speaker 1: commitment to get down in there from him. Yeah, Well
- 30:07Speaker 1: it would be a matter. It's simply have just taken
- 30:09Speaker 1: the vault toilet off or you're going in You going,
- 30:14Speaker 1: oh yeah, I would say he's probably knee deep in there. Okay,
- 30:20Speaker 1: I don't know if it had been just so recently
- 30:22Speaker 1: cleaned that he felt like he could stand over in
- 30:25Speaker 1: the corner and be on pavement. No, no, no, you
- 30:28Speaker 1: were down. You were not going to avoid anything that
- 30:31Speaker 1: was down in that hole. Knee, Yeah, that would be
- 30:34Speaker 1: my guess. And and so um So when I walked in,
- 30:40Speaker 1: I the first thing I saw actually was his phone.
- 30:44Speaker 1: He got his phone. He reached down in there and
- 30:48Speaker 1: dug around and got and the phone was, you know,
- 30:50Speaker 1: just laying there on the on the on the floor
- 30:52Speaker 1: and lit up. It was still working, So he was successful.
- 30:56Speaker 1: Why why hadn't he called there? There is no cell
- 30:59Speaker 1: service there. It's absolutely that entire big hole valley is
- 31:03Speaker 1: completely void of cell service. That sounds like a good placed.
- 31:10Speaker 1: Three hours no one shows up, But can't you call
- 31:12Speaker 1: like one without yeah, soul service. I have no idea.
- 31:18Speaker 1: Uh did you ever find out what he was doing
- 31:21Speaker 1: or how the phone got in there? All's he said
- 31:27Speaker 1: was he was he stopped there to do some fishing,
- 31:31Speaker 1: and he said, well, I had some business to take
- 31:33Speaker 1: care of and before and he went in there and
- 31:38Speaker 1: he said, he just dropped his phone into the toilet.
- 31:42Speaker 1: Mm hmm uh. You know it sounds like you know,
- 31:47Speaker 1: something everybody's done. I don't usually take my phone in
- 31:51Speaker 1: anywhere that has no cell service, in a vault, even
- 31:55Speaker 1: if it does, I don't take my phone in there
- 31:57Speaker 1: just because you know, how many times have you taken
- 31:59Speaker 1: a you know, something in with you and it's slipped
- 32:03Speaker 1: out and went in there. It's like, oh crap, but no,
- 32:06Speaker 1: that's down there, but it's going to stay there. But
- 32:08Speaker 1: I just think he walked in and I don't know
- 32:10Speaker 1: if he slipped or went to turn and the phone slip,
- 32:13Speaker 1: but it dropped down in there, and and he was
- 32:17Speaker 1: adamant he was going to get it, you know, I
- 32:20Speaker 1: can't tell you why. And the phone on the floor
- 32:23Speaker 1: was soiled. Yeah, well it was, Yeah, no doubt it
- 32:28Speaker 1: was soiled. But it was still working, you know. I mean,
- 32:33Speaker 1: you know, you know, like I dropped my phone in
- 32:36Speaker 1: our hot tub at home a week or so ago
- 32:38Speaker 1: and pulled it out, you know, within about thirty seconds,
- 32:40Speaker 1: and it still works. So yeah, you know, so liquid solids,
- 32:45Speaker 1: if you know, I think it was an iPhone. I
- 32:47Speaker 1: think they're you know, they're pretty solid, pretty solid products.
- 32:56Speaker 1: So um So anyway, so I told the guy, I said, well,
- 33:01Speaker 1: and he was all scraped up. He had scrapes everywhere
- 33:05Speaker 1: on his body from trying to get out because edges
- 33:08Speaker 1: are pretty sharp on those on those holes. I mean,
- 33:11Speaker 1: they're just completely square. And I was just like, uh yeah, man,
- 33:15Speaker 1: the poor guy. And so I said, well, we're going
- 33:20Speaker 1: to try the easiest thing first, and I said, I'm
- 33:22Speaker 1: just gonna come. I said, I'm gonna go get some gloves,
- 33:26Speaker 1: and I said he was okay, And so as I
- 33:30Speaker 1: was walking, I turned around trying to make a joke,
- 33:33Speaker 1: and he didn't think it was very funny. But I
- 33:34Speaker 1: turned around and said, don't go anywhere. I'll be right back,
- 33:41Speaker 1: and he goes, I'm not gonna go anywhere. Okay, Well
- 33:45Speaker 1: that's not so I went and got my gloves and
- 33:50Speaker 1: I came back in and I said, all right, I'm
- 33:53Speaker 1: gonna grab your hand and under your elbow arm armpit area,
- 34:00Speaker 1: and I said, you just push with your other hand.
- 34:03Speaker 1: Let's just see if I can pull you up. I said,
- 34:06Speaker 1: it's gonna be hard, but maybe it's our first, you know,
- 34:09Speaker 1: the first thing we gotta do. He was okay, So
- 34:12Speaker 1: you know, I said, I'm gonna say one, two, three,
- 34:14Speaker 1: go and on go, just start working. I said, okay.
- 34:16Speaker 1: So I grabbed his hands, his hand as you know,
- 34:20Speaker 1: there's arm pit, and I went one, two, three, go,
- 34:22Speaker 1: and I went to lift. I I didn't move them
- 34:25Speaker 1: an eighth of an inch. I mean, it was just
- 34:28Speaker 1: I just went, hell, this is not gonna work, and
- 34:32Speaker 1: he goes, yeah, plus I'm tired. I just can't. I
- 34:34Speaker 1: can't push myself up. I went, okay. So, uh you know,
- 34:39Speaker 1: he did say, he goes, if I could get just
- 34:42Speaker 1: a little elevation something to stand on, it might help,
- 34:48Speaker 1: you know, help push myself out as your lift. And
- 34:51Speaker 1: I said, okay. I said, well, I don't have anything
- 34:53Speaker 1: in my in my truck. Uh you know, I I
- 34:57Speaker 1: did think, well, I could put you know, Kristen down
- 34:59Speaker 1: in the hole and stand on her shoulders, but I don't.
- 35:04Speaker 1: I don't think she would have gone for that. So
- 35:06Speaker 1: so I went, you know, I just did not have
- 35:09Speaker 1: anything in my truck. I had a couple of fly
- 35:12Speaker 1: rods and uh, you know a little travel bag, and
- 35:15Speaker 1: that wasn't gonna work. So I went to his pickup
- 35:18Speaker 1: and I looked in the back and he had two
- 35:21Speaker 1: pieces of would basically you know, quarter sections like firewood
- 35:27Speaker 1: that were um, we're chopped that he had back there.
- 35:31Speaker 1: So so I grabbed one of those and uh, I
- 35:35Speaker 1: took that in and I said, let's try this. He goes, well,
- 35:40Speaker 1: it might be pretty wobbly. I don't know if it's
- 35:43Speaker 1: gonna work. I said, well, we really don't have a
- 35:45Speaker 1: whole lot of options right now. I mean, we got
- 35:47Speaker 1: to give this a try. And he goes, yeah, you're right.
- 35:50Speaker 1: I said, so can you get that down there? Because
- 35:53Speaker 1: I'm looking at him, I'm looking at the whole and
- 35:56Speaker 1: I'm going there isn't a quarter inch or how bench
- 36:00Speaker 1: of room between his body and it's a tight fit
- 36:05Speaker 1: even when he duck away from the hole. Yeah, yeah,
- 36:08Speaker 1: he could. I mean, you know, like I said, he was,
- 36:10Speaker 1: he was. He was a big man. And I I
- 36:13Speaker 1: just just like, I don't know how we can get
- 36:15Speaker 1: this in there. But you'll see, you know, I'll let
- 36:18Speaker 1: him do what he needs to do and to see
- 36:20Speaker 1: if he can, you know, squase it between his So
- 36:24Speaker 1: I said, okay, take this and let's give this a try.
- 36:27Speaker 1: Give this a shot. He goes, I said, yeah, can
- 36:30Speaker 1: you get that in there? And he goes, oh, yeah,
- 36:32Speaker 1: I can get it. I can get it there. And
- 36:33Speaker 1: I said okay. So I gave him a block of
- 36:35Speaker 1: wood and he dropped in the hole and I just went,
- 36:39Speaker 1: holy shit. I was like, oh my god, he's gone.
- 36:42Speaker 1: He fell in, he sunk. He's just you know, and
- 36:47Speaker 1: I didn't know what, you know. I was just kind
- 36:48Speaker 1: of freaked out about it. And I hear him down
- 36:52Speaker 1: in the hole just walking around. Knowledge you can hear,
- 36:55Speaker 1: you know, it's the sound you can of all this
- 37:00Speaker 1: here stuff coming up between his toes, like walking through
- 37:04Speaker 1: the marsh. Yeah. Yeah. And so the you know, the
- 37:09Speaker 1: block of wood is you know, maybe twelve inches tall,
- 37:14Speaker 1: you know, maybe maybe sixteen inches, and you can hear
- 37:20Speaker 1: him down there, you know, pushing it down and getting
- 37:22Speaker 1: his studies. He guys down, his head pops back up.
- 37:27Speaker 1: I said, did you get it in there? And he goes, yeah,
- 37:29Speaker 1: it's kind of wobbly, but you know it might work.
- 37:31Speaker 1: And I went, okay, okay, And now I'm looking at thinking,
- 37:35Speaker 1: I don't know which hand he used to do that,
- 37:41Speaker 1: but I had a long sleeve shirt and gloves. I that, okay, well,
- 37:44Speaker 1: we just got to get this poor guy out of here.
- 37:46Speaker 1: And had had had you at this point, has you
- 37:49Speaker 1: thought I'm gonna leave this to the professionals, or were
- 37:52Speaker 1: you just like committed to making at this point, I
- 37:56Speaker 1: was a d percent committed to get him out, uh,
- 38:00Speaker 1: you know, just to see if we could get him out,
- 38:03Speaker 1: because you know, he'd been in there for three hours.
- 38:05Speaker 1: And it's like, you know, so i'd call you a
- 38:08Speaker 1: good Smaritan. But my understanding of a Smaritan is they
- 38:11Speaker 1: were generally bad people. Yeah, some people say someone's a
- 38:16Speaker 1: good smart and they're messing it up. It's like a
- 38:18Speaker 1: good Smaritan was, these are like bad people, but here
- 38:22Speaker 1: one did a good turn. That was my understanding. A
- 38:26Speaker 1: little known fact about being a good Smarit. No, I
- 38:28Speaker 1: don't know. I don't throw that around because you might
- 38:30Speaker 1: be like, well, what's wrong with me? Well, no, I
- 38:32Speaker 1: actually was kind of thinking about that. Technically probably fits.
- 38:36Speaker 1: So you're really good at being a bad person, really
- 38:40Speaker 1: good at being a bad person, that's right. So so anyway,
- 38:43Speaker 1: you're just a nice guy. Next time you go into
- 38:47Speaker 1: the coffee shot, you can when and you can be like, hey,
- 38:49Speaker 1: can you give me the nice guy deal? And'd be like, really, bro, listen,
- 38:53Speaker 1: pull the dude out of a well. But you know,
- 38:57Speaker 1: and really, where I was thinking is you know, when
- 39:00Speaker 1: I go inside of all toilet, hopefully somebody will do
- 39:03Speaker 1: the same. So anyway, so we got he's got the
- 39:10Speaker 1: block of wood down there, and he comes up and
- 39:13Speaker 1: goes that giving you a little more elevation. He goes, yeah,
- 39:15Speaker 1: a little bit, but pretty wobbily. He said, well, let's
- 39:17Speaker 1: give it a try, and so he stood up on
- 39:19Speaker 1: it and TELL lifted him up a little bit, but
- 39:22Speaker 1: not a lot. That might be enough. And I said,
- 39:25Speaker 1: just keep your knee bent, and when I say go,
- 39:28Speaker 1: just push yourself and even if it falls over, it
- 39:31Speaker 1: might give you enough momentum to get up. Because okay,
- 39:33Speaker 1: So then one, two, three go, I went left block
- 39:36Speaker 1: of wood fell over, and we got no further than
- 39:38Speaker 1: we did the other way. I said, okay, let me
- 39:41Speaker 1: go get that other block of wood. I said, let's
- 39:43Speaker 1: we can make at least a half a block half around, yeah,
- 39:48Speaker 1: or a half around, And so I I went and
- 39:50Speaker 1: got the other one, handed it to him. He went
- 39:53Speaker 1: back in the hole, um squished around in there. Now
- 39:57Speaker 1: that didn't bother me at all. So we had you
- 40:00Speaker 1: guys introduced yourselves to each other, yet, like were you
- 40:02Speaker 1: on a first name basis? Well, we did, he I
- 40:05Speaker 1: asked him what his name was, and I was so
- 40:08Speaker 1: freaked out. I didn't really pay attention to what his
- 40:10Speaker 1: name was. But but we'll say his name was Steve
- 40:16Speaker 1: Chris And are you getting in there and helping him?
- 40:18Speaker 1: Was kind of hanging around? No, I was just kind
- 40:21Speaker 1: of hanging out because there's nothing I could have done. Um.
- 40:24Speaker 1: But one thing I do have to say about Joe
- 40:27Speaker 1: is that he always he was so calm with him.
- 40:30Speaker 1: He never like freaked out, never, and he would talk
- 40:33Speaker 1: to him just trying to keep him calm right because
- 40:37Speaker 1: he's been in there for three hours already, And so
- 40:41Speaker 1: I was really impressed with that, is because he just
- 40:45Speaker 1: kept him calm, going, you know, but we're going to
- 40:47Speaker 1: do this, We're going to get you out, you know,
- 40:49Speaker 1: just hang tight kind of thing. So you picked the
- 40:52Speaker 1: right guy all those thirty two years ago, I did. Yes, Yes,
- 40:56Speaker 1: for sure, Yes, the guy getting tan could you could
- 41:00Speaker 1: you sense there was like a little bit of like anxiety. Yeah,
- 41:05Speaker 1: he was, you know, um you know, and and obviously
- 41:09Speaker 1: the thing is just heating up and when you take
- 41:11Speaker 1: that's just now it's just a hole. The it's hot,
- 41:17Speaker 1: the gases are much worse. I mean it's just because
- 41:21Speaker 1: it starts to the gate that it starts to the
- 41:23Speaker 1: gate that vent pipe. That vent pipe is not getting
- 41:26Speaker 1: it's not drawn a draft. Yeah, and it's it was,
- 41:30Speaker 1: and it was bad. So so I put the other
- 41:33Speaker 1: block of wood down and basically got the same result.
- 41:36Speaker 1: It just wasn't gonna work. So this is where I went, Okay, well,
- 41:42Speaker 1: in my truck, I've got rope and I've got a
- 41:46Speaker 1: toe strap. So I was kind of looking and I thought, well,
- 41:49Speaker 1: you know, they've got the the bar in there for um,
- 41:53Speaker 1: you know, then the handicap bar. I thought that's not
- 41:57Speaker 1: gonna work, and I don't want to rip that off
- 42:00Speaker 1: the wall. And I thought, well, I could pull my
- 42:02Speaker 1: truck up, and I thought, ropes out, that's just not
- 42:06Speaker 1: gonna work. But the toast drop, you know whatever, four
- 42:09Speaker 1: inches wide, and I thought, well, I could hook it
- 42:11Speaker 1: to my truck and have him wrap it around maybe
- 42:14Speaker 1: pull him out. Went no, that's not gonna work. I
- 42:18Speaker 1: thought well, I could drop it down and maybe he
- 42:20Speaker 1: could use it to try to climb up. And I
- 42:23Speaker 1: thought he's not gonna be able to do that either.
- 42:25Speaker 1: And this at this points when I thought, well, you know,
- 42:31Speaker 1: I never actually thought about calling nine one one, but
- 42:33Speaker 1: I did think about I thought I might have to
- 42:36Speaker 1: drive over to there's a couple of ranch houses. I thought,
- 42:41Speaker 1: maybe drive over there, and they probably have a landline
- 42:43Speaker 1: we can call and then we can get you know,
- 42:47Speaker 1: professional rescue crew there. And so I was sitting here
- 42:53Speaker 1: and I was trying to say, how what am I
- 42:55Speaker 1: going to do here? And maybe I'll maybe I'll just
- 42:57Speaker 1: drive to the ranch house. And I'm still talk into
- 43:00Speaker 1: the guy, but I'm thinking about what I want to do.
- 43:02Speaker 1: And I hear another vehicle drive up, and and so
- 43:07Speaker 1: I I thought, oh, it's fantastic. I said, hey, I
- 43:11Speaker 1: just heard a vehicle drive up. I'm gonna see if
- 43:14Speaker 1: somebody's in there that might be able to give us
- 43:16Speaker 1: a hand. He goes okay, and sort of being in
- 43:20Speaker 1: a in a bit of a smartass move, I started
- 43:23Speaker 1: walking out. You turn around, and I went, don't go anywhere,
- 43:26Speaker 1: just stay right there. And he thought it was about
- 43:28Speaker 1: as funny as he did the first. So so I
- 43:34Speaker 1: went out and Kristen had waved him down and stopped him,
- 43:39Speaker 1: and uh, and so I walked up and and and
- 43:42Speaker 1: when you when you stop them, what did you say? Well?
- 43:44Speaker 1: I just kind of flagged him down, because sometimes when
- 43:48Speaker 1: you go to a place like that, it's like, oh
- 43:49Speaker 1: or else, somebody's already there. We're just gonna leave, right,
- 43:52Speaker 1: So I didn't want him to leave, so I was
- 43:54Speaker 1: just flagging him down. Then they pull up and um,
- 43:58Speaker 1: husband and wife for boy for girlfriend. So he was driving.
- 44:01Speaker 1: She was on the passenger side, of course, so she
- 44:03Speaker 1: rolled down the window. About that time Joe came out.
- 44:06Speaker 1: So you're you're able to introduce the subject, yes, So
- 44:11Speaker 1: so I walked up and she rolled down the window,
- 44:13Speaker 1: and you know, the guy they were actually coming there.
- 44:18Speaker 1: They wanted to do a little bit of fishing, and
- 44:21Speaker 1: and so I walked up to the window and I
- 44:25Speaker 1: kind of leaned up under the passenger window and kind
- 44:28Speaker 1: of stuck my head in because just so the guy
- 44:31Speaker 1: at the vault toilet wouldn't hear the conversation. And I said,
- 44:35Speaker 1: I could use I need I need a hand, I
- 44:37Speaker 1: need some help. And the guy goes, well, what's going on?
- 44:41Speaker 1: I said, And he had a hat on, had has
- 44:44Speaker 1: a ponytail coming out the back and and I go, well, uh,
- 44:50Speaker 1: there's a guy stuck in the vault toilet. I mean
- 44:53Speaker 1: like stuck neck deep in the hole, and I had
- 44:57Speaker 1: to break in, and the door was locked, and I
- 44:59Speaker 1: had to break in and and I found him. He's
- 45:01Speaker 1: been in there for three hours and closer to four
- 45:03Speaker 1: hours now. And the guy just took his hat off,
- 45:07Speaker 1: kind of pulled his ponytail out, rubbed his head, put
- 45:10Speaker 1: his hat back on, put his ponytail back in his hat.
- 45:14Speaker 1: He looked out. It was just just cracked me up.
- 45:17Speaker 1: And looked out, you know, stared off out the windshield
- 45:20Speaker 1: for about five seconds. He kind of had this look
- 45:24Speaker 1: on his face. Then he just turned and looked at
- 45:26Speaker 1: me and goes, well, there's something I didn't expect to
- 45:29Speaker 1: hear today. I said, well, that makes two of us.
- 45:33Speaker 1: I didn't expect to find this either. And I said,
- 45:36Speaker 1: I said, I just can't get the guy out. I
- 45:39Speaker 1: can't get him out by myself. I said, between the
- 45:41Speaker 1: two of us, we might be able to lift lift
- 45:44Speaker 1: him out. And he goes, yeah, okay, I'd be happy
- 45:47Speaker 1: to give you a hand. So he pulled up and yeah,
- 45:51Speaker 1: I said, get gloves. He goes, oh, yeah, he got gloves.
- 45:54Speaker 1: And so we go walking in and I said, hey,
- 45:58Speaker 1: I gotta I've got an extra body here. I give
- 46:00Speaker 1: me a hand. He goes all good good, and the
- 46:03Speaker 1: guy walks in. He goes, hey, how you doing. He goes, well,
- 46:09Speaker 1: like I told the other guy, but fucking better. He goes, well,
- 46:14Speaker 1: we'll get you out of here. We'll get this all
- 46:16Speaker 1: figured out. So the guy goes, hey, hang on a minute,
- 46:20Speaker 1: I just I'm gonna go out and check something. So
- 46:25Speaker 1: the guy walks out. Kristan and his wife or his
- 46:28Speaker 1: girlfriend were just kind of standing over by the vehicle,
- 46:31Speaker 1: and he walks out with his hands on on his
- 46:34Speaker 1: hips and he just goes what the fuck it was?
- 46:45Speaker 1: And she and I under standing there, I'm like, I know,
- 46:48Speaker 1: I know. So he just he just had to get
- 46:53Speaker 1: that off his chest, and he just kind of looked
- 46:57Speaker 1: at him. I was like, yeah right. I mean, so
- 47:01Speaker 1: we walked in and we said, well, let's just do
- 47:04Speaker 1: the simple thing first, let's give up the old and
- 47:10Speaker 1: so we get down there and do the same thing.
- 47:13Speaker 1: I grab an arm, hand, he grabs the other hand.
- 47:16Speaker 1: We okay, one to three, and we this time you
- 47:20Speaker 1: know where I didn't really budge them before. We maybe
- 47:22Speaker 1: lifted him, you know, half an inch. It just it
- 47:25Speaker 1: just wasn't gonna work. And so I told the guy said,
- 47:29Speaker 1: you know what we need is just something he can
- 47:32Speaker 1: stand on that we can put down there. I said,
- 47:33Speaker 1: we put a couple of blocks of wood down there
- 47:35Speaker 1: that they just weren't steady enough, maybe not talking. He goes,
- 47:38Speaker 1: I said, do you have anything in your truck? I said,
- 47:40Speaker 1: I don't have anything, and he goes, well, he goes,
- 47:42Speaker 1: maybe let me let me go look. And so at
- 47:46Speaker 1: some point in time when this was going on, he
- 47:49Speaker 1: told his wife, you've got to get a picture or
- 47:51Speaker 1: his girlfriend whatever it was, And that's where that picture
- 47:53Speaker 1: came from. So she just kind of watched. They reported
- 47:57Speaker 1: it to the they sent it into the well. I
- 48:01Speaker 1: don't know how it got on Facebook. I have no idea. Well,
- 48:04Speaker 1: and I'll get to that. The first time I saw
- 48:07Speaker 1: that picture kind of here at the end of this
- 48:09Speaker 1: kind of this story, because I didn't know she took pictures.
- 48:12Speaker 1: I didn't know any pictures existed. Let's slot. So the guy,
- 48:24Speaker 1: we walk over his truck and he's kind of looking
- 48:28Speaker 1: and he's pulling things up. Finally he goes pulls out
- 48:31Speaker 1: a lawn chair. It's one of those lawn chairs that
- 48:34Speaker 1: you know, you can fold up, slip into a bag,
- 48:38Speaker 1: and uh so he pulls that out. He goes, well,
- 48:44Speaker 1: I'll dedicate this to the cause, you know, and I'm
- 48:51Speaker 1: kind of bummed out because we introduced ourselves to each other.
- 48:54Speaker 1: They were great people apparent I think apparently they're from Ennis,
- 48:58Speaker 1: and you know, just they were really really nice folks
- 49:03Speaker 1: and good sense of humor. You know, we had pretty
- 49:07Speaker 1: some good chuckles while we're doing this because it's just
- 49:09Speaker 1: so unbelievable. And and so he grabbed the lawn chair
- 49:14Speaker 1: and he also grabbed a towel um because he thought,
- 49:17Speaker 1: you know, if we get him out, you know, I'll
- 49:20Speaker 1: put it on the edge of the hole because it's
- 49:21Speaker 1: just a cement floor. You know, he's sweaty, sticky. He
- 49:25Speaker 1: had a really good idea, get him on the towel
- 49:27Speaker 1: and then we can kind of slide him, slide him out.
- 49:30Speaker 1: And so so he laid the towel down. It's like
- 49:33Speaker 1: a mill, right job. Yeah, yeah, engineering involved in this thing.
- 49:39Speaker 1: The guy has lawn chair and he's going, I don't
- 49:41Speaker 1: know how he's going to get this down that hole. Yeah.
- 49:44Speaker 1: I just kind of went, oh, I'm sure he'll figure
- 49:46Speaker 1: out way. And so he's because he's he's filling the
- 49:53Speaker 1: whole hole, and I said, well, he'll get it down there.
- 49:56Speaker 1: So the guy goes, okay, we're gonna use this lawn chair.
- 50:01Speaker 1: It should be steadier if you can get it opened
- 50:03Speaker 1: up and all four ft. He goes, if you can
- 50:06Speaker 1: get it down there, and guy goes, yeah, I can
- 50:08Speaker 1: get it down here. So he hands the guy the
- 50:11Speaker 1: lawn chair and he's having the same thought I am
- 50:13Speaker 1: at this point the guy that had gave him a
- 50:15Speaker 1: lawn chair, Um, and how is he gonna get in there?
- 50:18Speaker 1: And so he gives him the lawnchair. The guy drops
- 50:21Speaker 1: into the hole, and the guy's going holy, he just
- 50:24Speaker 1: went fell into I just looked at me, said, oh
- 50:26Speaker 1: it's okay, it's all good. I've seen that before. He'll
- 50:29Speaker 1: pop back up and he's like, oh my god. You
- 50:35Speaker 1: can hear the guy down and there slashing around, and
- 50:38Speaker 1: you know you hear the lawn chair open up and
- 50:41Speaker 1: you can hear it hit the ground. He's kind of
- 50:43Speaker 1: squeezing and that down into the bottom to get it steady.
- 50:46Speaker 1: And and the guy pops up and we go, you
- 50:50Speaker 1: got that lawn chair steady? And goes, yeah, it's pretty steady,
- 50:53Speaker 1: and he said okay, Um, we're gonna say one to
- 50:58Speaker 1: three and on go push yourself up, you know. And
- 51:02Speaker 1: and I didn't know if the lawn chair would really
- 51:04Speaker 1: hold with the you know, hold him and stuff. And
- 51:07Speaker 1: he's standing up on yeah, at this point he standing
- 51:11Speaker 1: and we looked and we went, this gives us, this
- 51:14Speaker 1: gives us some some height that a lot better, you know.
- 51:18Speaker 1: It lifted him up, you know whatever, probably you know,
- 51:23Speaker 1: so we got more leverage. So he's sitting were on
- 51:25Speaker 1: his on his torso as the edge of the hole.
- 51:30Speaker 1: After with the lawn chair, uh can so before he
- 51:35Speaker 1: was only able to go armpit, you know, just resting
- 51:39Speaker 1: his arms. Now he lifted up about the bottom of
- 51:45Speaker 1: the sternum. So I mean he went from from basically
- 51:49Speaker 1: here there so his neck neck up to um. Yeah,
- 51:55Speaker 1: and and he had he had something he could push
- 51:58Speaker 1: on to help lift himself a fun So we told
- 52:02Speaker 1: the guy, we said, okay, we need you to push up,
- 52:08Speaker 1: but you need to do something for us because otherwise
- 52:11Speaker 1: we're not going to get you out of this hole.
- 52:13Speaker 1: And he goes, well, what's that. We said, as soon
- 52:15Speaker 1: as we start lifting, you gotta suck in your your gut.
- 52:19Speaker 1: You gotta suck that gut in so we can get
- 52:21Speaker 1: you up over the hole. He said, but as soon
- 52:25Speaker 1: as that your gut starts coming out, you need to
- 52:29Speaker 1: thrust your ass otherwise it's gonna get stuck on that whole.
- 52:33Speaker 1: So it's suck and thrust and he's okay, okay, yeah,
- 52:41Speaker 1: its life lesson. So so anyway, so one, two three go,
- 52:46Speaker 1: we grab him, you know, and he forgot to suck
- 52:49Speaker 1: it first, and so we put him back down and said, okay,
- 52:51Speaker 1: remember to sucking. You're gotting all right, one two three,
- 52:54Speaker 1: go and pull him. We said, suck sucking, you gotta suck,
- 52:57Speaker 1: suck it in, and we got him lifted up and
- 53:00Speaker 1: then we had, you know, but got stuck on the
- 53:04Speaker 1: other side of the hole, and it said thrust, so
- 53:07Speaker 1: he thrust. So then he thrust it and up he came,
- 53:11Speaker 1: and we got him on the towel and kind of
- 53:12Speaker 1: slid him across, and we're just like, you know, so
- 53:15Speaker 1: now we have this naked guy laying on the towel,
- 53:18Speaker 1: and we just went, okay, you're out. We're gonna go out.
- 53:22Speaker 1: Just take the towel, wrap it around you and walk
- 53:27Speaker 1: to the river and go clean yourself. And so we
- 53:32Speaker 1: just went out and we just went, Holy crap. I
- 53:35Speaker 1: cannot believe that we just had to do this, But
- 53:38Speaker 1: we got him out. The guy's good, you know, he was.
- 53:41Speaker 1: He kind of laid there for a minute just to
- 53:43Speaker 1: catch his breath. And so we went over and we
- 53:48Speaker 1: were standing by our vehicles and talking. You know, I
- 53:51Speaker 1: was thanking him for the help, and you're thanking the
- 53:54Speaker 1: ponytail guy. Yeah, yeah, yeah, And I wish, yeah, we
- 53:57Speaker 1: introduced ourselves. I wish I could remember for their their names,
- 54:01Speaker 1: like you'd go fishing with him. Yeah, oh yeah, he
- 54:04Speaker 1: was a good yea And they said they're from Ennis,
- 54:09Speaker 1: and Chris and I talked at some point in time,
- 54:12Speaker 1: we're gonna go to Ennis. We're gonna go to the
- 54:14Speaker 1: distillery or the brewery or something. And I'm gonna tell
- 54:16Speaker 1: this story because I'm sure it's floating around and somebody's
- 54:22Speaker 1: going to go. There's no way that guy hasn't gone.
- 54:24Speaker 1: And yeah, and somebody because I bet you he's from Bozeman.
- 54:28Speaker 1: And just didn't want to admit. I want to buy
- 54:35Speaker 1: the guy a bottle of Whiskyers beers or so I
- 54:39Speaker 1: just yeah, but it's not your But he helped, but
- 54:43Speaker 1: he helped. Yeah, oh yeah, I mean I just want
- 54:45Speaker 1: to thank him for the for the help. I mean,
- 54:46Speaker 1: I thanked him, but I want to, you know, thank
- 54:48Speaker 1: them but a toast or something, you know, because he
- 54:52Speaker 1: didn't have to he didn't have to stay, but he
- 54:54Speaker 1: and it was his idea for you should both be honored.
- 54:57Speaker 1: You know those one you're driving along and you see
- 54:59Speaker 1: those things like historical marker up ahead, yeah, historical marker. Yeah.
- 55:07Speaker 1: So so anyway, so we're standing there talking and and
- 55:10Speaker 1: the guy comes walking out. He's got the towel wrapped
- 55:13Speaker 1: around him, and he's like, oh God, thank you guys.
- 55:15Speaker 1: I can't tell you how much I appreciate that. We're like,
- 55:18Speaker 1: no problem, you know, jeez, I'm glad we could help.
- 55:20Speaker 1: And and he comes why and he tells the guy
- 55:22Speaker 1: He goes, I'm gonna buy you a new lawn chair.
- 55:24Speaker 1: And he goes, no, no, don't worry about it. I
- 55:26Speaker 1: can get another one of those pretty pretty easily. Don't
- 55:28Speaker 1: don't worry about that. And so we just said you
- 55:31Speaker 1: just keep walking, just keep walking to the to the river,
- 55:35Speaker 1: go take a bath, and he goes, yep, yea, And
- 55:39Speaker 1: so he's got his uh clothes kind of I think
- 55:42Speaker 1: dangling off his arm or something. He's holding the towel
- 55:45Speaker 1: and he went walking by and and the towel, let's
- 55:49Speaker 1: just say the towel didn't quite go around around, you know,
- 55:53Speaker 1: he went. He was fine in the front, but we
- 55:55Speaker 1: just watched back. The back half just walshed towards the river.
- 56:01Speaker 1: And so we were just sitting there and we were
- 56:04Speaker 1: kind of talking a little bit, and I said, well,
- 56:07Speaker 1: we're we were actually going to stop and the distiller
- 56:12Speaker 1: impute and have a Caesar on the way home, and
- 56:16Speaker 1: and so we were running a little late. But I
- 56:17Speaker 1: went to my truck and I have hand sanitizer in there,
- 56:19Speaker 1: and I took some and I cleaned myself up, and
- 56:23Speaker 1: I asked, you want some of this. He's like, oh,
- 56:25Speaker 1: hell yes, So I you know, she said, oh no,
- 56:28Speaker 1: give me more. So I just emptied my bottle that
- 56:29Speaker 1: you know, it's just a little bottle, gave him. And
- 56:31Speaker 1: we were just like, you know, and so I said, well,
- 56:35Speaker 1: he goes, well, we're here to fish. And I said,
- 56:38Speaker 1: I'm just guess we're gonna pull our rods out and
- 56:40Speaker 1: we're gonna Because it wasn't two o'clock yet, it was
- 56:43Speaker 1: you know, I don't know. It was like eleven, you know, noon,
- 56:47Speaker 1: and so he goes, I'm we're gonna go fish for
- 56:48Speaker 1: a little bit. Said, yeah, we're gonna We're gonna head
- 56:51Speaker 1: off to Umpute. You already knew what you were going
- 56:55Speaker 1: to order. Al yeah, Well we actually talked about it
- 56:59Speaker 1: when we left the VR. And I guess you know
- 57:03Speaker 1: that because head Frame Distillery is a fantastic distillery. And
- 57:07Speaker 1: you got a good Caesar and if you can't Caesar
- 57:11Speaker 1: or a Caesar salad, drink, drink the drink. Also get
- 57:15Speaker 1: your fixing to go get a Caesar. And it's actually
- 57:19Speaker 1: a gin Caesar, which is the way they makes fantastic.
- 57:23Speaker 1: So well, there must be a Montana thing because I
- 57:25Speaker 1: was recently in White Sulfur and someone's like, oh, we
- 57:28Speaker 1: should go get a Caesar over here. They have good ones.
- 57:31Speaker 1: I'm like, what, yeahin Bloody Mary with clam juice. Yeah,
- 57:41Speaker 1: clamato clamato yeah yeah, but it's just not Tomato with
- 57:49Speaker 1: juice is just thick and gross tomato juice. It's yeah,
- 57:55Speaker 1: you're like, I've had enough of the thick, gross stuff.
- 58:01Speaker 1: So but anyway, so so we said our goodbyes and
- 58:04Speaker 1: it's so dumbast you know, you didn't exchange phone numbers
- 58:07Speaker 1: with these folks that you know, we were just I
- 58:09Speaker 1: was still, you know, we were just kind of I
- 58:11Speaker 1: just wanted to get out there, but you didn't know
- 58:13Speaker 1: you're a part of a national news I figured this
- 58:16Speaker 1: was the end of So so we went and I
- 58:18Speaker 1: told Chris and I said, I gotta stop at the
- 58:20Speaker 1: bar wise River. I could literally drink a six pack,
- 58:22Speaker 1: but I just need to stop in there and wash
- 58:24Speaker 1: my hands in the bathroom and I'll get a diet
- 58:26Speaker 1: pepsi or something until we get to bawt. So we
- 58:29Speaker 1: walked in and then you know, I went I said, hey, no,
- 58:32Speaker 1: no one's in there except that there's an older lady.
- 58:34Speaker 1: And the younger guy behind the bar said, I just
- 58:35Speaker 1: got to use your bathroom and I'll take it. Just
- 58:38Speaker 1: how about diet pepsi. You haven't had one of those
- 58:39Speaker 1: for ten years? Because okay, So I went in there
- 58:42Speaker 1: and I washed about four times, and well they obviously
- 58:45Speaker 1: Christen had said that my husband's got a story. You know,
- 58:47Speaker 1: he said, hey, we got to hear this. So I
- 58:50Speaker 1: went through the story, and you know, this is what's funny,
- 58:52Speaker 1: isn't the band woman Venus Mars thing. You know she's
- 58:58Speaker 1: she's going just like your hero. God, Thank God for
- 59:02Speaker 1: people like you. And you know that guy could have died.
- 59:05Speaker 1: And I'm saying, the young guy behind the bar was going,
- 59:09Speaker 1: how stupid was this guy? It's like, no, you know,
- 59:14Speaker 1: the guy made a bad arab and judgment and blah
- 59:16Speaker 1: blah blah blah. So anyway, we went off and had
- 59:19Speaker 1: our our Caesar. I told that the guy that helped me.
- 59:21Speaker 1: I said, Hey, one thing I'm gonna do is I'm
- 59:23Speaker 1: going to call at WP on Monday. This was a Saturday.
- 59:27Speaker 1: The story makes me want to get retired so bad.
- 59:31Speaker 1: I just like this whole, groovy guy, phenomenal man. So
- 59:35Speaker 1: I said, I know, I know who I have to
- 59:37Speaker 1: call over there. I said, I'm not going to call
- 59:39Speaker 1: the regional office because they have a new division over
- 59:42Speaker 1: I can't remember exactly what it's called that the outdoor
- 59:44Speaker 1: Recreation and something, but I knew they uh that they
- 59:48Speaker 1: oversee the access sits now and and uh. And it
- 59:52Speaker 1: turns out the division ministrators somebody used to walk work
- 59:54Speaker 1: down the hall from me, uh in the Capitol building,
- 59:58Speaker 1: And so I called her and left a message and
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: just uh said, hey, I got something I need to
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: talk to you about it. But the fish Trap fishing
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: access site. Um, if you can give me a call back,
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: you appreciate it, you know, I don't know a half
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: hour later, so she calls me and she goes, hey, Joe,
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: let's go and how's the retirement? Said's great? I love it,
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: you know, doing a lot of fish in the skiing
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: and you know, traveling and hunting and all that stuff
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: and stuff. And I said, hey, congratulations on the new job.
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: You like it. Yeah, she goes, oh, I love It's
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: my dream job. And yad yad yda. So we got
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: done with the small talk. She goes, what's going on
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: fish Trap? And I went, well, uh, so I told
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: her the story and she's, you know, going kind of
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: laughing and going, oh my god. I did not know
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: I was gonna start my monday like this. And uh
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: and so I told her, I said, oh, look, I
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: just want you to know. I told her about the
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: event and I had to pry the lock h and
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: I said, I just want you to realize no, that
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: it wasn't vandalism, that it was you know, this is
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: what happened yeah, and oh. She goes, why apreciate that?
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: I said, oh, by the way, I because I just
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: told her we got him. And I said, by the way, um,
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: I do need you to apologize for the maintenance staff
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: for me when they go there, like, who doesn't want
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: stuff down? The vaul's got a chair? I said. She goes, well,
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: what do you mean? I said, well, because they're going
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: to find two blocks of wood in a lawn chair
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: inside and she just what I said, Well, we had
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: to use these as part of the extraction, and and
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: she goes okay, okay. So I said just let them know.
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: And she goes, okay, well, maybe a game ward might
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: want to call you just to file report. I said
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: it's fine, and one never did. But I said, I
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: also wanted to make sure you had it on records
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: what happened, because you know, I said, certainly in my career,
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: you know, you see various frivolous lawsuits somebody tries to
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: soothe the state for something. I said, I just wanted
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: to know if that happened, you know where you need
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: to come. She goes, okay, great, well I gotta text
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: the next day from her and she goes, does this
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: look familiar and it was that picture and I went
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: in Vice. No, no, this is before anything happened. This
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: is two days after the whole extraction. And I looked
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: at it. I went, where did you get that? And
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: she said, well, the maintenance guys. Why so I can
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: only imagine she called the maintenance people and they were like, wow,
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: oh my god, what And he probably told his wife
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: somehow she found it on Facebook and found this picture
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: and you know, and send it the picture that was snapped. Yeah,
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: the picture that you see on Vice. And I looked
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: at I said, where did you get that? And she said, well,
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: the maintenance guy's wife found it on Facebook. I was like,
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: and I asked it, do you have any idea who
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: posted that? And um, she didn't. But that was the
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: first time I saw the picture, and quite us, I
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: showed Kristen. We had a chuckle. I sent it to
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: my my boys and said, oh, yeah, here's here's a picture.
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: And that's where I thought it was pretty much gonna end.
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: And then um, I Kristen, I'm not on Facebook on
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: my Instagram, but she started seeing all these Facebook posts
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: and then people she knows started reposting it and you know,
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: re sharing it, and pretty soon you're like solely that
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: guy that landed that plan, and I'm just like I
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: started reading things. I'm like, oh jeez, that's you know,
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: it's just things are sort of getting out of you know,
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: because the people are making assumptions of this and that.
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: So uh, I just sort of went, well, it is
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: what it is, and we'll just not worry about. And
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: then somebody sent me that I think it was the
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: Cowboy Daily or whatever, it was Cowboy State Daily. And
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: then Karn sent me the Vice article and I was like, oh, yeah,
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: well no, I told her. I said, it's yeah, it's
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: on something called Vice. It's you know, I assume it's
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: some little sort of online rag. She goes, well, no, actually,
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: there it's a big it's a big online news organization.
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: She and then what clarified it for me was she does,
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: like HBO Max or you know some of the streaming
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: smart TVs, you'll see an app called Vice, and yeah,
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: I've never paid attention to it. Just well, that's that's it.
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: I went, oh, okay. So then I went in and
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: read the article. I'm like, well, they did some they
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: did some work. They didn't did someone else's They actually
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: tracked down finally got to f w P and you
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: know that's where they found out when somebody you know,
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: but the hand found you. Well they did because I
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: called them. They just didn't share my name, which which
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: you know, I guess I appreciate it. But long story short,
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: I just you know, we're coming back from a long
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: road trip. And Chris was like, oh my god, that
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: somebody's a son of somebody of a friend of hers
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: reposted it, and so she had to text him and say,
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: you know that's Joe in the picture. He's like, what
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: the hell and she's yeah, A long story, blah blah
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: blah blah. And I was just sort of trying to
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: let this go. And and then it was about maybe
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: a week or two later that my son sent me
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: a text and link to the podcast said, hey, Steve
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: and Rella just talked about the ship house extraction on
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: his podcast. I went, what And then then now here
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: we are, man, then because of my buddy Bruce getting
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: ahold of her in and yeah, and now you know
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: the whole story. And I don't know, I mean, I
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: just kind of blabbed about the story. But if you
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: have questions or and you asked some but I just
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: was trying to let this thing just sort of fade
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: away into the sunset. Yeah, but it's it's just it's
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: such an interesting um scenario and there's some and uh
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: and I appreciate your efforts on his behalf. Yeah, well
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: I sure he probably appreciates it more and you um.
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: And I also appreciate that you're you don't you're not
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: going out of your way to uh to reveal his identity.
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: And I respect his desire for a nononymity. Um. But
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: are you guys in touch? No? No, no, no. Two
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: ships in the night. It was a one night stand.
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: We went we went camping just this last week and
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: Joe and Christian Dorothy and I and another couple. We
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: were over in Lincoln and let's get around. Yeah. Yeah,
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: we just went over the camp and there's a vault
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: toilet there. There's a little campground and so I I
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: go walking into the vault toilet and I thought, hey, Joe,
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: come here and show me how this how this thing works.
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: I mean, because I didn't know you could take the
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: pedestal off. Yeah, the sick and so he goes, he goes, well,
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: this is a four service one. He says, I'm not
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: sure it's the same thing he says, but he walks in.
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: Joe walks in and just kind of bear hugs and
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: pedestal puffs right off, so you don't even need to no,
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: it just it just slides off. And I looked at that,
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: and he said, Dorothy, go get my camp chair. I said,
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: I looked at that, and I and so two pieces
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: of Joe looks Joe, Joe standing there, I'm standing there,
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: a little standing there, and we both look kind of
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: down this cement oval hole, which, like Joe said, about
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: two ft by three ft give or taken, and we
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: both just kind of glanced in there. It's like peering
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: into a volcano. And we both just kind of stood
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: back and went, oh God. Then then the whole campfire
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: conversation at night was what would it take for you
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: to go down into a vault toilet? Yeah, that's my question?
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: Can I do it for your fan? And I'm thinking
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: to myself, Okay, so a smartphone is a high end
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: a thousand dollars. If somebody said I'll give you a
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: thousand dollars to crawled down in there, I'd be like, Nope.
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: But I think that there's there's issues of um, it's
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: really inconvenient to lose your phone. I dropped mind this winter,
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: not down a vault toilet, but I dropped mind down
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: an ice fish and hole. And you know it's like,
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: you're not the thing occurs you isn't well there goes
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: a thousand bucks. What occurs to you as like oh yeah,
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: like all the things that has lost the inconvenience, they
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: can't transfer it now. I can't call my wife now,
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: do you. I mean like it's it's not it's not money.
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: It's just like, oh really, so I feel that I would. Honestly,
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: there's plenty of people that and I've had I raised
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: three kids. You get to where your relationship to excrement
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: having babies just changes a lot. Manly. It's not you know,
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: general general public. Yeah, no, it's it's very different. Don't
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: mean I don't mean to draw like a total parallel
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: between what's in that hole and raising kids, just saying,
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: you know, just that that everything kind of changes over time.
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: And if I had dropped rather than going down ice
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: fishing hole, um, if I had dropped it in the
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: vault to that, I don't know that I I would get
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: in there and when pressed. I'm pretty crafty about stuff
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: like that. I feel like I would have fashioned up. Um.
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: I would have gotten some para cord and a couple
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: of willow limbs and fashioned up with tongue or make
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: like a little fishnet thing, big salad tongue fishing net.
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: I don't know, but I wouldn't have been like that,
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: goes my phone. Yeah, yeah, I mean I would have
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: been in there figuring it out. I'd have had Yanni
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: hang ankles down in there. I think I would have
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: been hanging. I was like, I can't, you're slipping. Yeah,
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: it's crazy. Yeah, so you know, I did you know
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: I could do that with her, you know, because she's tiny.
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: Drop down in there. You guys could have a little service. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: contract ourselves out to you know, different government agencies stop
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: for specialty cocktails. We could use that for a retirement.
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: Many start started saving up money for the thirty third anniversary.
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: That's that's right, well on behalf of Americans on behalf
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: of Montana's thanks for fishing that guy out of the toilet. Yeah,
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: you're welcome. And I hope the guy never does that.
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: I can and I'm pretty sure he won't. But if
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: he does, I can't guarantee I'll be there, but to
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: step up with no derision, no condescension, and step up
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: and help man out of the toilet. That's American elbow grease. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: thanks for coming to tell the story. That's good, Gunny.
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: Final thoughts on that one, Ni, No, I bet he's
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: got one of those fancy lanyards now on his phone
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: hanging around his neck, or like those old chain drive
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: wall let's just get one to hold your phone on there. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: the belt. I appreciate. I appreciate you guys coming in.
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: I hope you enjoy your retirement. How Bruce, how long
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: you and Dorothy you guys been married? How long we've
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: been married? Twenty five years? Years? All right? Yeah? I
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: love it, yep, yep, and I've been still get along
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: we do. We do as long as I listen to
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: everything she tells me. That's good. You know what, I
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: got one last favorite? Hit us with your best piece
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: of marriage vice best each couple, I would say for
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: Dorothy and I what works the best is, uh, we
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: allow each other to do the things that interest each other,
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: so we allow each other to be individuals. I mean,
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: you participate in or you let them give them room
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: to go do what they want to do, exactly both,
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: to be honest with you, Okay, Dorothy hit it was
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: he does a lot of fishing and a lot of
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: hunting that doesn't include me. And I have some of
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: the things I like to do that I don't include him.
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: But we also do a lot of things together as well.
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: So what's your what's your number one marriage advice? Allowing
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: each other space? Oh you guys have you guys kind
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: of have the same philosophy. Absolutely, Yeah, Okay, Joe, well
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: he took my thunder. Yeah. Really, it's just like a
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: really important component of a long marriage. Well, yeah, I
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: think it's important to have time away, um, you know,
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: and go do the things you're interested in. And you know,
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: I can I do what we call guy trips, you know, hunting, fishing,
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: you know whatever, and she does girl trips. You know,
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: it takes off and goes somewhere and might be a weekend,
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: might be a week or whatever however long. But I
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: you know, the old absence makes the heart grow fonder yonder.
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: So it's you know, I as soon as you said that,
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: I went, yeah, it's this and uh, I just think
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: it's really really important, you know, to do that. Christ
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: and hits with your marriage. Boys, Yeah, I would say, yeah,
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: so my girls trips that I do are very important
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: to me, and so are his guide trips. And then
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: we do stuff together just the two of us, and
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: then we have a group you know of couples that
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: we do things with that is also really fun. And
- 1:13:15Speaker 1: then our kids. So I I was brought up like that.
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: My parents worked there. They were married sixty some years,
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: so they kind of did the same thing. So I
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: had that to go off of. So hopefully we have
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: to emboy, So hopefully they you know, I think they
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: see how we interact and everything, and I think it
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: just flows down, right, It just everything flows down to
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: your kids and how they watch and everything like that.
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: So enjoy your time together. Yeah, go find time to
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: do your own thing, pursue your own interests, which I'm
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: sure you guys will do, right, Yeah, a little bit,
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: I'm kind of thinking I'm kind of thinking that. Yeah, yes,
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: thanks so much for coming on. I think this is
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: the final definitive word unless the individual emerges, but at
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: this point we got the full story. Yeah. Yeah, so well,
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: thanks for thanks for having us, and thanks for having us.
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: I'm glad to be, glad to finally share the story.
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: At least put it off your chest. You get it
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: off my chest. Put it behind you. Thanks, Thanks guys,
