- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Thursday, it's the 12th of
- 0:15June and as we get closer to the end of the week we have got a
- 0:20moment to reflect upon a bit of history.
- 0:22Do you know the 12th of June, 90 years ago?
- 0:26That's right, it was 1935 when the very first drive in movie
- 0:32theatre opened. Do you remember going to the
- 0:34drive in? I don't even know if there are
- 0:36any drive insurance around my part of the world anymore.
- 0:38Boy, they were so good. Do you remember sitting in there
- 0:41making a mess inside the car with popcorn everywhere, tuning
- 0:44into the radio frequency so you could hear the sound of the
- 0:47movie? So good.
- 0:49We used to even set up a little porta cot beside the bed and put
- 0:52the babies and toddlers to sleep in there and then stay for the
- 0:55second half of the double bill, which were generally not kid
- 0:58friendly movies. Those were the days.
- 1:00Anyway, there you go. 90 years ago it all started in drive
- 1:04insurance. I wonder when the last drive in
- 1:06will close. Thank you Netflix, you've been
- 1:09good for many things, but you kind of kill drive insurance at
- 1:12the same time. Well, putting drive insurance
- 1:15aside, today we will continue hearing Moses instructions to
- 1:19God's chosen nation as they enter that long awaited and
- 1:22promised land, as He gives them a call to remember and obey.
- 1:28Let's read it together, shall we?
- 1:29Deuteronomy chapter 8. Be careful to obey all the
- 1:43commands I'm giving you today. Then you will live and multiply,
- 1:48and you will enter and occupy the land the Lord swore to give
- 1:51your ancestors. Remember how the Lord your God
- 1:54LED you through the wilderness for these 40 years, humbling you
- 1:59and testing you to prove your character and to find out
- 2:03whether or not you would obey His commands?
- 2:05Yes, He humbled you by letting you go hungry and then feeding
- 2:10you with manner a food previously unknown to you and
- 2:13your ancestors. He did it to teach you that
- 2:17people do not live by bread alone, rather we live by every
- 2:21word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.
- 2:24For all these 40 years, your clothes didn't wear out and your
- 2:29feet didn't blister A swell. Think about it.
- 2:32Just as a parent disciplines a child, the Lord your God
- 2:36disciplines you for your own good.
- 2:39So obey the commands of the Lord your God by walking in his ways
- 2:44and fearing Him. For the Lord your God is
- 2:47bringing you into a good land of flowing streams and pools of
- 2:52water, with fountains and springs that gush out in the
- 2:56valleys and hills. It is a land of wheat and
- 3:00barley, of grapevines, fig trees and pomegranates, of olive oil
- 3:05and honey. It is a land where food is
- 3:08plentiful and nothing is lacking.
- 3:11It is a land where iron is as common as stone and copper is
- 3:15abundant in the hills. When you have eaten your fill,
- 3:19be sure to praise the Lord your God for the good land He has
- 3:23given you. But that is the time to be
- 3:26careful. Beware that in your plenty you
- 3:30do not forget the Lord your God and disobey His commands,
- 3:33regulations and decrees that I'm giving you today.
- 3:38For when you have become full and prosperous and have built
- 3:41fine homes to live in, and when your flocks and herds have
- 3:45become very large and your silver and gold have multiplied,
- 3:48along with everything else, be careful.
- 3:52Do not become proud at that time and forget the Lord your God,
- 3:56who rescued you from slavery in the land of Egypt.
- 4:00Do not forget that He LED you through the great and terrifying
- 4:03wilderness with its poisonous snakes and scorpions, where it
- 4:08was so hot and dry. He gave you water from the rock.
- 4:13He fed you with manner in the wilderness, a food unknown to
- 4:16your ancestors. He did this to humble you and
- 4:20test you for your own good. He did all this so you would
- 4:24never say to yourself, I have achieved this wealth with my own
- 4:28strength and energy. Remember the Lord your God.
- 4:34He is the one who gives you power to be successful in order
- 4:38to fulfil the covenant. He confirmed to your ancestors
- 4:41with an oath. But I assure you of this, if you
- 4:46ever forget the Lord your God and follow other gods,
- 4:49worshipping and bowing down to them, you will certainly be
- 4:53destroyed. Just as the Lord has destroyed
- 4:56other nations in your path, you also will be destroyed if you
- 5:00refuse to obey the Lord your God,
- 5:13our Lord. In this reading we hear with
- 5:15such clarity that to love you is to listen to you and obey you,
- 5:23to set you above all others. It's to hear your instructions
- 5:29and follow them, forsaking all others.
- 5:34And Lord, Moses warns these people that it's in the moments
- 5:38when we are doing well, when we are well fed and successful,
- 5:43when we sit back and think life is good.
- 5:48Lord, in these moments, drive us to praise you.
- 5:52Drive us to have hearts filled with gratitude that we can
- 5:59reflect on your good gifts to us.
- 6:03Lord, help us always, every day, continually live following your
- 6:09teaching. And thank you that you've given
- 6:12us Jesus and your Spirit, to both save us from ourselves and
- 6:18also to work in US, transforming us, working on our broken human
- 6:24nature, to continually realign ourselves in gratitude to you.
- 6:31So we praise you, and we ask all of these things in the precious
- 6:34name of your Son Jesus. Amen.
