- 0:06Speaker 1: You're listening to the sean o'connell show from the murdoch
- 0:09Speaker 1: hyundai studio of espn 792 1fm.
- 0:18Speaker 2: Welcome back to the sean o'connell show welcome in our
- 0:21Speaker 2: football expert our betting experts talk all things nfl and
- 0:25Speaker 2: college football my good friend Jeff Schwartz.
- 0:28Speaker 1: Welcome back to the show, Jeff Schwartz. How are you?
- 0:31Speaker 3: Good. How are you?
- 0:32Speaker 1: Doing all right. It's a big week. It was a
- 0:35Speaker 1: big weekend in football here in the state of Utah
- 0:37Speaker 1: college football. And obviously another big one coming is Utah
- 0:41Speaker 1: welcomes Houston for college game day, who was here in
- 0:45Speaker 1: Provo last week for BYU versus Notre Dame. I, I
- 0:50Speaker 1: don't know if I'm being superstitious or what my problem is.
- 0:53Speaker 1: I actually kind of hate that after their worst performance
- 0:56Speaker 1: of the year against Colorado, where Utah barely escaped with
- 0:59Speaker 1: the victory. Now you've got a ranked Houston team coming
- 1:02Speaker 1: in and they're, you know, all the fanfare of college
- 1:05Speaker 1: game day and stuff. Am I just, am I being
- 1:08Speaker 1: a baby about this?
- 1:09Speaker 3: You're, you're, you're just a little stitious.
- 1:11Speaker 1: Maybe not super, but just a little stitious.
- 1:14Speaker 3: Um, uh, I think I mean a baby, but you
- 1:17Speaker 3: mean a baby, um, oh, this is good for your program, right?
- 1:21Speaker 3: In this situation, I don't think you thought you would
- 1:23Speaker 3: be it, right? College game day, like for Houston game,
- 1:26Speaker 3: because as good as you thought maybe this year was go,
- 1:28Speaker 3: this feels like something that just, you know, you're pretty
- 1:31Speaker 3: excited to be in this spot where you're able to
- 1:33Speaker 3: celebrate your team and your program, and you're one of
- 1:36Speaker 3: Morgan Scali. I mean, I know the attention you might
- 1:39Speaker 3: not love in this situation, but, like, that's just good
- 1:42Speaker 3: for the program. It means you're going in the right direction,
- 1:44Speaker 3: and it's a good opportunity to sell The program to
- 1:47Speaker 3: the masses who might not be watching Utah football so far.
- 1:49Speaker 3: You have not had very few national TV games. They
- 1:53Speaker 3: have been. They've been late, right? Late in the East Coast,
- 1:55Speaker 3: this opportunity to sell your program to a wide audience.
- 1:59Speaker 1: When you have that stinker of a game, is that
- 2:02Speaker 1: kind of a necessary rite of passage for any team, good, bad, indifferent,
- 2:06Speaker 1: where you're going to have to have one? that you
- 2:10Speaker 1: just don't play well, you don't show up the way
- 2:11Speaker 1: you're supposed to show up, you're not as physical as
- 2:14Speaker 1: you're supposed to be, the coaches are off with their
- 2:16Speaker 1: play calling, whatever it is. And to survive that, it
- 2:20Speaker 1: means you're probably better off. Every team, it seems like,
- 2:24Speaker 1: has one or two of these, and Utah had one,
- 2:27Speaker 1: and they somehow came away without losing it.
- 2:30Speaker 3: Well, you'd rather win them than lose them.
- 2:31Speaker 1: Of course.
- 2:33Speaker 3: I'll tell you that. I mean, this felt like a
- 2:35Speaker 3: classic spot where Colorado's off a bye, right? And they've
- 2:39Speaker 3: heard for weeks now how bad they are and how
- 2:43Speaker 3: poorly they're playing. Utah has a big home game next week,
- 2:48Speaker 3: the week after you play Colorado. This had all the
- 2:52Speaker 3: fixings of a trap game, even though you guys got...
- 2:55Speaker 3: I think it was Europe 13-0, right?
- 2:58Speaker 1: Yes.
- 2:59Speaker 3: And I think this is two weeks in a row
- 3:00Speaker 3: the second half defense just wasn't as good as the
- 3:02Speaker 3: first half defense. I think that's something to look into
- 3:05Speaker 3: as you head into playing Houston here. But, I mean...
- 3:09Speaker 3: You know, stinkers are part of the sport. They tend
- 3:12Speaker 3: to happen before big games. So to me, it's not
- 3:15Speaker 3: like that big of a deal. It just feels like
- 3:17Speaker 3: a pretty normal thing to happen for college football is
- 3:20Speaker 3: you have the stinker right before the biggest game you've
- 3:23Speaker 3: played all season. And so you won. In the end,
- 3:27Speaker 3: you end up with a victory, which is the goal anyway.
- 3:29Speaker 3: So I wouldn't put much stock into it. If the
- 3:31Speaker 3: same things that sort of plagued you in that game
- 3:34Speaker 3: start happening in other games... maybe worry about it more,
- 3:37Speaker 3: but I wouldn't worry about it. Now, I mean, the
- 3:38Speaker 3: second half defense, I think, is two weeks in a
- 3:41Speaker 3: row now. It's a little concerning, right? The points and
- 3:44Speaker 3: yards given up, but you'll know much more about your
- 3:47Speaker 3: team when you play a good Houston team this weekend.
- 3:49Speaker 1: When you're not getting, and Morgan Scali has been kind
- 3:54Speaker 1: of trying to talk us off this ledge, and Colton Swan,
- 3:56Speaker 1: the defensive coordinator, has been trying to talk us off
- 3:58Speaker 1: this ledge, but it seems like, and you just mentioned
- 4:01Speaker 1: the third quarter defense, and it's been every third quarter,
- 4:05Speaker 1: and it's been is plagued the second half a couple
- 4:07Speaker 1: of times, the whole second half a couple of times,
- 4:10Speaker 1: there is a seeming disconnect between the quality of the
- 4:15Speaker 1: man coverage and the pass rush that makes it so
- 4:18Speaker 1: they only have to cover their man for three and
- 4:20Speaker 1: a half seconds. And there was, you know, Morgan Scali
- 4:23Speaker 1: and his press conference yesterday said it's not as simple
- 4:26Speaker 1: as you guys think. Quarterbacks are getting the ball out quickly,
- 4:29Speaker 1: and that's part of what the problem is here. Our
- 4:31Speaker 1: pass rush is fine. It doesn't look like it's fine.
- 4:35Speaker 1: You got no sacks from the defensive end. You had
- 4:37Speaker 1: no real pressure against Colorado last week. Mobile quarterbacks are
- 4:41Speaker 1: obviously able to extend it even longer. And then you're
- 4:43Speaker 1: just not able to cover even really great DBS can't
- 4:46Speaker 1: cover for five and a half seconds. Do you have
- 4:49Speaker 1: to change things up? If you're, if you're not getting
- 4:52Speaker 1: the right amount of pressure, do you have to then
- 4:54Speaker 1: start to change your defensive scheme and go away from
- 4:57Speaker 1: some of that man?
- 4:58Speaker 3: Yes. So, look, the pairing of these together basically is
- 5:04Speaker 3: that if you play man coverage, you're a little stickier
- 5:08Speaker 3: to start the down, right? And if you're a little
- 5:11Speaker 3: stickier to start the down, that allows your pass rush
- 5:14Speaker 3: potentially to get home, right? That's sort of like the
- 5:18Speaker 3: genesis of that together, right? And then the longer that
- 5:22Speaker 3: you're in man coverage without getting the quarterback, the tougher
- 5:25Speaker 3: it is to continue to play man coverage, right? So,
- 5:28Speaker 3: you sort of tie those two together. And so, yes,
- 5:30Speaker 3: if you're not getting quick pressure, Sean, then it really
- 5:33Speaker 3: negates the point of playing man coverage, right? And so
- 5:37Speaker 3: you would think you would have to change things up
- 5:40Speaker 3: and sort of maybe play some zone coverage if you
- 5:43Speaker 3: can't get home on the quarterback. But the thing that
- 5:46Speaker 3: I always struggle with with these guys, because Oregon's over
- 5:48Speaker 3: the years played a ton of man coverage, and they've
- 5:50Speaker 3: gone away from that a little bit as they've been
- 5:51Speaker 3: gassed over the years playing so much man coverage, is
- 5:55Speaker 3: that if you... coach man coverage all year and that's
- 6:00Speaker 3: like actually never mind we're playing zone now yeah like
- 6:05Speaker 3: that's hard to just play zone like but they always
- 6:08Speaker 3: play man what do you want them to do like
- 6:11Speaker 3: that's not what they do um so i think it's
- 6:14Speaker 3: like easier said than done like it's easy to just
- 6:17Speaker 3: do something that different but if that's all what you
- 6:19Speaker 3: do and organ over the years has moved to play
- 6:22Speaker 3: more too high um it's it's helped out the defense
- 6:25Speaker 3: a lot but That took two years to do, right?
- 6:29Speaker 3: And so if you're a man coverage team, you're probably
- 6:32Speaker 3: going to play man the entire year, and then you'll
- 6:35Speaker 3: switch over in the offseason. Or maybe you can make
- 6:37Speaker 3: the mix over by a couple weeks and whatnot. You
- 6:39Speaker 3: mix it in. But you also don't want to end
- 6:41Speaker 3: up with blown coverages, right? You do hope your pass
- 6:43Speaker 3: rush does get home eventually, right? So you don't want
- 6:45Speaker 3: to give up on that altogether. But it's just hard
- 6:48Speaker 3: to decide to wholesale scheme change things in the middle
- 6:51Speaker 3: of the season. Yeah.
- 6:53Speaker 1: It's going to be interesting to see how they– handle it.
- 6:55Speaker 1: There's also, right, where you just manufacture the pressure. You
- 7:00Speaker 1: bring blitzes.
- 7:01Speaker 3: A lot of times when you blitz, you play zone
- 7:03Speaker 3: behind it, though, so again, if you're not doing a
- 7:06Speaker 3: ton of zone coverage, you're not often going to man
- 7:09Speaker 3: pressure unless it's like a zero pressure.
- 7:12Speaker 1: We'll see how they adjust because you've got to find
- 7:15Speaker 1: a way to make it harder on Connor Wegman than
- 7:17Speaker 1: you made it on Isaac Wilson.
- 7:19Speaker 3: Houston's good on offense. Their defense is not great, but
- 7:21Speaker 3: their offense is, you know, I think he had You know,
- 7:25Speaker 3: five touchdown passes and added like 50 yards rushing too.
- 7:28Speaker 1: Yeah, he's a good player. he's going to be able
- 7:32Speaker 1: to adjust to, you know, whatever you're trying to hide
- 7:35Speaker 1: and whatever you're showing and all that kind of stuff.
- 7:37Speaker 3: So how do you feel about the game?
- 7:41Speaker 1: I'm nervous for this game. Not because I think what
- 7:44Speaker 1: we saw from Utah against Colorado is who they really are,
- 7:47Speaker 1: but they haven't played a winning team yet. Right. And now,
- 7:50Speaker 1: so I think that the step up is very significant
- 7:54Speaker 1: and you do it on a national stage where, you know,
- 7:58Speaker 1: your highlighted game, although they still kept it late at night,
- 8:00Speaker 1: which is somewhat laughable.
- 8:02Speaker 3: Oh, it's the late game again. Yeah. Like 10, 15, 10, 15,
- 8:08Speaker 3: your time. Yeah, dude. This weekend, Oregon played 11. Right.
- 8:13Speaker 3: And I did not stay awake, but I woke up
- 8:16Speaker 3: to pee at like two 30. And I looked at
- 8:19Speaker 3: my phone. It was 14. I like two minutes less.
- 8:21Speaker 3: I sat in my bed and wants a phone. I
- 8:23Speaker 3: watched my, the game. I saw like the best part
- 8:25Speaker 3: of our game. I, All the Oregon fans were jealous
- 8:27Speaker 3: of me that I skipped the terrible part of the
- 8:29Speaker 3: football game and watched the last two minutes, which was
- 8:31Speaker 3: the only good part. We played the whole game. I
- 8:33Speaker 3: got lucky.
- 8:34Speaker 1: I think I fell asleep right before we actually got
- 8:37Speaker 1: a resolution on that game.
- 8:39Speaker 3: It was late. It didn't end until 2.45 Eastern.
- 8:46Speaker 1: That's insane. It's pretty ridiculous, honestly.
- 8:53Speaker 3: It's not. I mean, And I saw Oregon got like, no,
- 8:57Speaker 3: it was not ranked the top 25. I'm not sure
- 8:59Speaker 3: we totally deserve it. But how many voters were awake
- 9:02Speaker 3: at 2.45 watching the end of the game before they
- 9:04Speaker 3: submitted their ballots for the week?
- 9:05Speaker 1: Yeah, nobody. Nobody. BYU was able to beat Notre Dame.
- 9:11Speaker 3: Yeah, shocking. I was shocked.
- 9:13Speaker 1: Okay. What is the correct football outcome for that final
- 9:19Speaker 1: play where there was an extra second, but they didn't
- 9:22Speaker 1: realize that until after the fact? Uh, there was a
- 9:26Speaker 1: lot of contact on the coverage. A lot of folks
- 9:29Speaker 1: thought the, you know, the rules officials and the rules
- 9:32Speaker 1: expert were just like, yeah, that's past interference. Kirk herb street.
- 9:35Speaker 1: It's out on the broadcast. That's past interference. Or of
- 9:38Speaker 1: course the third option is no, like you let them
- 9:40Speaker 1: play it out down at that end of the field
- 9:43Speaker 1: and Notre Dame didn't deserve an extra play and they
- 9:46Speaker 1: didn't make the play they needed to. So BYU wins.
- 9:49Speaker 1: What is the objective correct football outcome for that scenario?
- 9:54Speaker 3: Well, use something that I think is kind of silly, though.
- 9:56Speaker 3: You just said that Notre Dame has deserved one second. No,
- 10:00Speaker 3: there was one second left on the clock. We can
- 10:03Speaker 3: debate pass interference holding some of these calls that are
- 10:09Speaker 3: just subjective, right? Human opinion, right? Did it happen? Did
- 10:12Speaker 3: it not happen? I saw with my eyes this. We
- 10:15Speaker 3: can debate those all day, Sean. Was it pass interference?
- 10:17Speaker 3: Probably not. Do they call a lot of times that
- 10:19Speaker 3: situation at a game? No, but I think if they
- 10:22Speaker 3: would have called it, you would have been like, okay,
- 10:24Speaker 3: I see the pass favorites. You can't mess up the clock, man.
- 10:27Speaker 3: There was one second left. If you have to call
- 10:32Speaker 3: a national guard to take the people off the field,
- 10:35Speaker 3: take the people off the field. I saw someone claim
- 10:39Speaker 3: that they think Steve Young ran the field first because
- 10:42Speaker 3: he knew there was a second left. He wanted there
- 10:43Speaker 3: to be like a big mob on the field. to
- 10:45Speaker 3: not have that happen. But like, there was a second left.
- 10:49Speaker 3: You have to administer that correctly. As a, we cannot
- 10:54Speaker 3: have procedural issues. We've talked about this for years with
- 10:59Speaker 3: the Pac-12. I had the same take for years now.
- 11:02Speaker 3: You cannot have procedural issues like this in college football. Again,
- 11:08Speaker 3: opinions on holding pass interference, fine. I think it's a holding, whatever, man.
- 11:13Speaker 3: But you can't mess this up, man. You just can't
- 11:15Speaker 3: mess this up. There was a second left. No one's
- 11:17Speaker 3: even arguing there wasn't. Everyone's like, yeah, there was a
- 11:19Speaker 3: second left. We just did. The game ended. To me,
- 11:23Speaker 3: you just can't make those errors, Sean. That's not acceptable.
- 11:26Speaker 1: The argument from the bluest of bluebloods down here in
- 11:30Speaker 1: Provo is that they delayed the start of the clock
- 11:34Speaker 1: to favor Notre Dame, and so it actually, when you
- 11:38Speaker 1: When you play out... Oh, boy. When you let the
- 11:42Speaker 1: game play, it actually took the full four seconds or
- 11:45Speaker 1: whatever when you put a stopwatch next to it. But
- 11:50Speaker 1: the thing is, right, we could debate it, and there's
- 11:52Speaker 1: no reason to. BYU won. The result in the record
- 11:56Speaker 1: book is that BYU won.
- 11:58Speaker 3: They played better than Notre Dame. They deserve to win,
- 12:00Speaker 3: but the fact is Notre Dame should have won second left.
- 12:02Speaker 3: It doesn't mean that they scored that play, but there
- 12:05Speaker 3: was a second left on the clock, and it wasn't
- 12:07Speaker 3: administered correctly, and that's unfortunate because you don't want games
- 12:09Speaker 3: to end with situations like this where you're like, hey,
- 12:14Speaker 3: there's one second left. What happened here?
- 12:18Speaker 1: Weird deal. Did that win get BYU into the college
- 12:23Speaker 1: football playoff? Even if they lose to Utah, even if
- 12:26Speaker 1: they don't play in the Big 12 championship game, or
- 12:28Speaker 1: they do and they lose the Big 12 championship game,
- 12:30Speaker 1: was that enough to get BYU in, most likely?
- 12:34Speaker 3: So we're saying 11-1... No Big Ten Championship, no Big
- 12:38Speaker 3: 12 Championship game, right? Yeah. Or like 10-2, no Big
- 12:42Speaker 3: 12 Championship, or obviously they play in the game at 11-1,
- 12:45Speaker 3: I think they're in no matter what.
- 12:48Speaker 1: Yeah, like 11-1 or 11-2, like you somehow play in
- 12:52Speaker 1: the Big 12 Championship game, but you lose it, yeah.
- 12:58Speaker 3: Yes, because who else is going to be in the
- 13:01Speaker 3: playoff right now? Like... You have Ohio State, maybe, right?
- 13:07Speaker 3: But now they have a quarterback injury, right? So that's
- 13:10Speaker 3: a maybe, right? You have, I think Indiana's probably in. Oregon,
- 13:15Speaker 3: unlikely unless they win out. It's kind of a bummer
- 13:18Speaker 3: because our defense is playing so good right now. USC,
- 13:21Speaker 3: I guess, but USC's got to sort of navigate Ohio State,
- 13:25Speaker 3: Indiana still. plus they have a couple other, you know,
- 13:29Speaker 3: they got the Bruins still. Dude, the Bruins are only
- 13:32Speaker 3: a three-point, I mean, a three-point favorite, excuse me, USC's
- 13:35Speaker 3: only a three-point favorite on the road to Wisconsin this weekend. Like,
- 13:38Speaker 3: there's no gimme this weekend for USC. ACC's got one team.
- 13:42Speaker 3: SEC's got Georgia, Bama probably, Ole Miss maybe. Like, there's
- 13:47Speaker 3: not a lot of teams, man. Like, who's going to
- 13:49Speaker 3: be in the, who's in? I don't know. I think
- 13:53Speaker 3: the Big 12 is, have three possible spots in the
- 13:59Speaker 3: playoff at the moment.
- 14:02Speaker 1: Yeah, I saw someone write an article making the case
- 14:05Speaker 1: for that, that you have BYU missing the game by
- 14:09Speaker 1: losing to Utah, Utah being in the game and losing it,
- 14:14Speaker 1: and then whoever wins the game being in it.
- 14:17Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah.
- 14:18Speaker 1: Yeah, maybe.
- 14:19Speaker 3: Right? That's certainly possible.
- 14:21Speaker 1: Yeah, looks like this is the last year we have
- 14:23Speaker 1: to make a 12-team debate to the pleasure of absolutely
- 14:27Speaker 1: nobody around college football. This came out like Wednesday night,
- 14:32Speaker 1: and I didn't do a Thursday or Friday show last
- 14:34Speaker 1: week because I was in Chicago for the PFL, and
- 14:37Speaker 1: I was just yelling at the clouds about how dumb
- 14:39Speaker 1: this is.
- 14:40Speaker 3: Just taking days off, I'm not surprised.
- 14:43Speaker 1: Yes, that's right. But I know you don't like it.
- 14:48Speaker 1: Articulate for me why this is not in the best
- 14:50Speaker 1: interest of college football.
- 14:51Speaker 3: I just think that the goal of any tournament like
- 14:57Speaker 3: this is to pick a champion, right? To find a champion.
- 14:59Speaker 3: And I think that we have enough space available to
- 15:02Speaker 3: find a champion. And this just, to me, turns into
- 15:05Speaker 3: a participation tournament, right? Where we have eight and four
- 15:07Speaker 3: teams making... Making a championship. And to me, that's just
- 15:11Speaker 3: a playoff, which is, oh, the FCS does it. Okay,
- 15:15Speaker 3: who cares? But they also, the FCS also schedules around this, right? Like,
- 15:18Speaker 3: no one's going to change their scheduling. And it's going
- 15:21Speaker 3: to guarantee that we're going to have teams that just
- 15:26Speaker 3: don't schedule hard, that know they're better than the rest
- 15:29Speaker 3: of the teams in their conference. And even if they
- 15:31Speaker 3: lose two games in the conference, they go 10-2 or
- 15:33Speaker 3: 9-3 even, they're going to be a playoff team, Sean, right? Like,
- 15:35Speaker 3: I don't know how this... really makes the sport that
- 15:37Speaker 3: much better. You could argue, well, a team like Oregon, right?
- 15:40Speaker 3: Like let's say we lost to Oklahoma state. We lose
- 15:43Speaker 3: to UCLA playing a third string quarterback. And, you know,
- 15:46Speaker 3: let's say we finished nine and three. Okay. Well, Oregon,
- 15:50Speaker 3: you know, should they be a playoff team nine and three?
- 15:52Speaker 3: Like that doesn't feel like a season that we should
- 15:54Speaker 3: be a playoff team with. Right. I just don't see
- 15:56Speaker 3: the value in this. And then also too, what frustrates
- 16:00Speaker 3: me is, so we decided to be greedy, right. And
- 16:04Speaker 3: do this, which is for the money. So why don't
- 16:07Speaker 3: we be all the way greedy and just make as
- 16:09Speaker 3: much money as possible and bid this out to all
- 16:11Speaker 3: the networks? They give it to ESPN. Just be greedy.
- 16:15Speaker 3: Just make as much money as possible. I know people
- 16:21Speaker 3: make the argument that the Warriors won't matter as much.
- 16:26Speaker 3: That's probably true. It won't matter as much. It's still
- 16:29Speaker 3: going to matter. You won't feel the sting as a fan.
- 16:32Speaker 3: When we lost Oklahoma State, I was like, here we go.
- 16:34Speaker 3: The season's over. And now I probably won't feel that
- 16:38Speaker 3: way where I'll just be like, Oh, well we lost one.
- 16:42Speaker 3: We'll be fine.
- 16:43Speaker 1: Which I don't love. I mean, I don't think that's
- 16:48Speaker 1: good for college football to, to not, I mean, part
- 16:52Speaker 1: of the unique nature of college football, part of the
- 16:54Speaker 1: thing that separates it from the NFL is that you,
- 16:57Speaker 1: you have to care about that week four matchup against
- 17:00Speaker 1: a team you never thought was going to be able
- 17:02Speaker 1: to beat you. And, you know, in the NFL, you
- 17:04Speaker 1: can skip those because you, you got four built-in losses
- 17:07Speaker 1: every year before you have to worry about it. And
- 17:09Speaker 1: now like, if you're a big time program, if you're
- 17:13Speaker 1: a famous program, you have three built-in losses a year, probably.
- 17:18Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah. Probably. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, just is that,
- 17:23Speaker 3: is that what, is that what you want? I mean,
- 17:25Speaker 3: it's fine if that's what you want, but like, I
- 17:27Speaker 3: don't think the sport needs it. The sport. So you
- 17:29Speaker 3: need to, you know, what makes this sport so unique
- 17:31Speaker 3: is obviously that, you know, the urgency, right. The sense
- 17:33Speaker 3: of urgency and, and how important every game feels. And
- 17:37Speaker 3: while teams are going to win every game, of course,
- 17:39Speaker 3: it's not going to feel every loss won't feel. It'll
- 17:42Speaker 3: feel like the NFL. If every team loses, you're like, okay, well,
- 17:46Speaker 3: get them next week. We're allowed six losses, basically, right?
- 17:49Speaker 3: If you want to be a playoff team, most of
- 17:50Speaker 3: the time you can lose six games and be a
- 17:51Speaker 3: playoff team, or seven games now with a 17-game schedule.
- 17:56Speaker 3: And you lose seven games, and you're just like, okay, well,
- 17:58Speaker 3: all right, we lost again. We'll be fine. College football,
- 18:03Speaker 3: you know, clearly has never felt that way. Now it's
- 18:05Speaker 3: going to feel that way. And again, we're not going
- 18:06Speaker 3: to get any new champions. We're not going to get a,
- 18:09Speaker 3: you know, a dark horse winning a championship because they're
- 18:13Speaker 3: the 23 seed now. You know, it's not going to happen.
- 18:16Speaker 3: And then two, I see these things when we have
- 18:19Speaker 3: these new playoff seedings. People put out a list of like,
- 18:22Speaker 3: here's who would have made the playoff in 2022, right?
- 18:26Speaker 3: Let's just say random year. Guys, we do realize that
- 18:31Speaker 3: the committee is going to rank the teams differently knowing
- 18:33Speaker 3: that all 24 are in. We get that. They're going
- 18:37Speaker 3: to put a little more care into who ranks 20th
- 18:39Speaker 3: versus when you have a 12-team playoff and it probably
- 18:41Speaker 3: doesn't matter as much who ranks 20th or 22nd or 25th.
- 18:43Speaker 3: They're not going to let so many group of six
- 18:46Speaker 3: teams in. The ranks will be different. Why do we
- 18:50Speaker 3: not get that? I don't get why people make this argument. See,
- 18:52Speaker 3: in 2021, there would have been five teams in. No,
- 18:55Speaker 3: they'd rank them differently.
- 19:02Speaker 1: Uh, there was a bunch of top 10 teams, a
- 19:04Speaker 1: bunch of top 25 teams that lost this last weekend. Who,
- 19:09Speaker 1: whose loss hurt them the most? Whose loss took them
- 19:11Speaker 1: out of the college football playoff? Cause even with 12 teams, there's, there's,
- 19:15Speaker 1: you know, several of those squads, like George is not
- 19:17Speaker 1: out of it because they lost one game. So who,
- 19:20Speaker 1: who eliminated themselves mid season with that loss in week seven?
- 19:24Speaker 3: Um, I mean, Texas feels like they're circling the drain.
- 19:27Speaker 3: Don't they? They do with their schedule still. Um, So
- 19:32Speaker 3: I would probably say they did. I mean, Indiana should
- 19:37Speaker 3: be fine. Ohio State won but lost their quarterback. That's
- 19:41Speaker 3: not a great spot for them. So I would probably
- 19:44Speaker 3: say Texas is probably the one who's in the most trouble.
- 19:48Speaker 1: I saw someone put up a big graphic about Texas
- 19:52Speaker 1: and the fact that Arch Manning was paid all this
- 19:55Speaker 1: money and he was the number one overall recruit and
- 19:58Speaker 1: so was Quinn Ewers. In both cases, they maybe didn't
- 20:01Speaker 1: get what they should have out of either of those guys.
- 20:05Speaker 1: I don't know if Arch Manning ever should have been
- 20:07Speaker 1: the number one overall recruit. I don't I don't do
- 20:10Speaker 1: the recruiting stuff. I don't do high school player evaluations,
- 20:13Speaker 1: but you know, he, he's been good, not great. And
- 20:17Speaker 1: obviously that's different when you're at Texas and it's a
- 20:19Speaker 1: heck of a lot different when there's Manning on the
- 20:21Speaker 1: back of your Jersey.
- 20:21Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 20:23Speaker 1: And you know, Steve Sarkeesian in the span of one
- 20:25Speaker 1: week said, if his name was Joe Smith, you'd be
- 20:29Speaker 1: praising him. And then he, this, this week he said, yeah, we're,
- 20:33Speaker 1: we're going to give the freshmen some more reps. So like,
- 20:37Speaker 1: where do we actually stand on, Arch Manning.
- 20:41Speaker 3: Just feels very mismanaged, doesn't it?
- 20:43Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 20:45Speaker 3: And, you know, the thing about Arch is, like, I've
- 20:49Speaker 3: said this for a while, you never just see, like,
- 20:52Speaker 3: a 60-minute game. Like, when's the last game you're like, man,
- 20:54Speaker 3: that's the Arch Manning game. Like, that's the game where
- 20:59Speaker 3: he showed he's in the top of the draft. Now,
- 21:02Speaker 3: a draft pick is different, you know, than where, is
- 21:06Speaker 3: a college quarterback because you have the draft. They, they,
- 21:08Speaker 3: they do a lot of trait and traits drafting, right? Sean.
- 21:10Speaker 3: So I don't know what his NFL future is going
- 21:12Speaker 3: to be. I just know that Texas is not working. Um,
- 21:16Speaker 3: they're not, you know, they're not completing enough passes down
- 21:18Speaker 3: the field. They're not using the weapons. They have the
- 21:20Speaker 3: offense cries out way too much of its line. It's
- 21:22Speaker 3: not really gone better. There's just not a lot of
- 21:24Speaker 3: those wild moments or the arch has, and the turnovers
- 21:27Speaker 3: are brutal.
- 21:27Speaker 1: So I don't know.
- 21:29Speaker 3: I mean, the look, the freshmen getting reps, not a
- 21:31Speaker 3: good sign for arch. Um, it does feel like they're,
- 21:33Speaker 3: you know, start to have to make quarterback change, which
- 21:35Speaker 3: is crazy. Sooner or later, it feels like, right?
- 21:39Speaker 1: I think, but who knows? Jeff Schwartz is our guest
- 21:43Speaker 1: here on the Sean O'Connell Show, talking all things college football.
- 21:47Speaker 1: Six undefeated teams left, as we have already talked about
- 21:51Speaker 1: this week. One of those is UCLA, who lost their
- 21:55Speaker 1: starting quarterback. How sustainable is it for UCLA? They've got
- 22:00Speaker 1: a decent, when I say decent, I mean a relatively
- 22:03Speaker 1: easy schedule ahead of them, but is is this one
- 22:06Speaker 1: going to drop off a cliff because Nico's out?
- 22:10Speaker 3: I don't think the Bruins are that good, man. I,
- 22:12Speaker 3: I just, they're, they're a good team. Um, you know,
- 22:16Speaker 3: they beat Oregon who had the worst EPA. I mean,
- 22:19Speaker 3: the Oregon tournament over six times, right. And they beat
- 22:21Speaker 3: them by two and they beat Wisconsin in a game
- 22:24Speaker 3: that just was horrendously officiated. And Wisconsin just, I mean,
- 22:28Speaker 3: there's just, everything went, went used to his way. And
- 22:30Speaker 3: maybe it's going to probably go their way this weekend
- 22:32Speaker 3: against Michigan state. Um, And they're probably going to be
- 22:35Speaker 3: a playoff team, but they're going to lose a playoff
- 22:37Speaker 3: game by multiple touchdowns. Chelsea's doing a really good job.
- 22:40Speaker 3: It's just they sort of have had things break their
- 22:43Speaker 3: way so far this year, which you need in a
- 22:45Speaker 3: given year. But I don't view them as a threat, really.
- 22:48Speaker 3: They scored 17 points two straight weeks and won games,
- 22:51Speaker 3: which is how often does that happen in college football?
- 22:56Speaker 3: I don't know. I argue not a lot.
- 23:01Speaker 1: Miami, BYU... UCLA, Texas Tech, Utah.
- 23:06Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 23:08Speaker 1: All undefeated still. Which one of those teams finishes with
- 23:11Speaker 1: the worst record?
- 23:13Speaker 3: Say them again.
- 23:15Speaker 1: Miami, BYU, Texas Tech, UCLA, Utah.
- 23:23Speaker 3: The problem is UCLA's schedule is so easy. They're going
- 23:28Speaker 3: to be a favorite to win nearly every game down
- 23:29Speaker 3: the stretch.
- 23:31Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 23:32Speaker 3: Texas tech schedule super easy too right they don't get
- 23:34Speaker 3: they don't get they don't get byu or utah.
- 23:38Speaker 1: Right texas techs texas tech schedule they now arizona's ranked
- 23:43Speaker 1: so they have uh ranked arizona on halloween and then
- 23:47Speaker 1: they've got a road game against oklahoma state a road
- 23:50Speaker 1: game against baylor and they finished the year with tcu
- 23:53Speaker 1: baylor's decent i.
- 23:54Speaker 3: Mean how many games are you guys losing geez um
- 23:59Speaker 3: I'll say BYU just to make your Utah fans happy.
- 24:04Speaker 1: All right.
- 24:05Speaker 3: Fair. BYU. Fair enough. Yeah. BYU it is. All right.
- 24:12Speaker 1: In the NFL, my San Francisco 49ers remain undefeated and
- 24:16Speaker 1: are the very obvious Super Bowl champions. Can we shut
- 24:19Speaker 1: down the season now?
- 24:24Speaker 3: I don't know how to keep doing this, Sean. They're
- 24:27Speaker 3: so injured. Mike Evans has an Achilles problem now, which
- 24:30Speaker 3: sounds like it's one wrong move away from Achilles injury, right?
- 24:33Speaker 3: You know, just I think I was doing my pockets earlier.
- 24:38Speaker 3: I think this is 23 of 29 targets. I've gone
- 24:41Speaker 3: last night with the three guys, right? McCaffrey, Kittle, and
- 24:44Speaker 3: Mike Evans. They're rushing the passer somehow, which they haven't
- 24:49Speaker 3: done for years now. I don't know how they keep
- 24:52Speaker 3: it going, but they certainly are, and they're playing good football.
- 24:55Speaker 3: I mean, let's just go show you Shanahan, right, man? Like, Shanahan...
- 24:58Speaker 3: He's an incredible coach. This team is prepared to play
- 25:00Speaker 3: each and every week. It's striking when they play teams
- 25:03Speaker 3: like Washington last night, who just isn't coached as well
- 25:06Speaker 3: as Shanahan and Shanahan team. It's, it's pretty remarkable to
- 25:09Speaker 3: see the difference in those.
- 25:11Speaker 1: Where is Jim Harbaugh coaching next year?
- 25:15Speaker 3: He's a special assistant for the New York giants or
- 25:18Speaker 3: this brother. He can't go college football. I would have
- 25:22Speaker 3: said USC, but he can't coach USC and USC might
- 25:24Speaker 3: be a playoff game. So funny. USC's like 123rd in
- 25:29Speaker 3: the country in points per drive on defense. It's just
- 25:34Speaker 3: insanely bad. Did you know, by the way, the NBA
- 25:36Speaker 3: is on right now? The first game of the regular
- 25:38Speaker 3: season started at 3 p.m. Eastern on Tuesday.
- 25:41Speaker 1: I'm watching it right now. 21-18 Detroit on top of
- 25:45Speaker 1: Boston with two and a half minutes left in the first.
- 25:51Speaker 3: That's insane. I don't know why they did that.
- 25:58Speaker 1: James is telling me in my ear that they gave
- 26:00Speaker 1: all the tip-off day games to NBC, so they had
- 26:04Speaker 1: to all be, you know, they've got three games they've
- 26:06Speaker 1: got to play today, so they had.
- 26:08Speaker 3: To put one early. Okay. Interesting.
- 26:14Speaker 1: Utah's on, this is like the fourth straight night game. Blackout.
- 26:19Speaker 3: As a fan, as an East Coast person, I hate the,
- 26:21Speaker 3: I can never watch you guys, you're so late at night.
- 26:24Speaker 3: I did watch your film, obviously, last week, but like.
- 26:26Speaker 3: So late at night.
- 26:27Speaker 1: The fan base is starting to get a little restless
- 26:29Speaker 1: about it. I like the night games because I can
- 26:32Speaker 1: kind of, like, be with the kids all day, put
- 26:34Speaker 1: them to bed-ish.
- 26:35Speaker 3: Yeah, but it's 9 o'clock, though. It's not 11.
- 26:39Speaker 1: Right. But, like, you know, not everyone has little kids
- 26:42Speaker 1: that are going to bed at 7.30 either. So they're like,
- 26:47Speaker 1: there's a lot of people who are bothered by the
- 26:49Speaker 1: idea that they've got to stay out until 1 a.m.
- 26:52Speaker 1: in order to see a Utah football game.
- 26:54Speaker 3: I think my son goes to bed after us some nights.
- 26:56Speaker 3: I think last night was one of them. I went
- 26:57Speaker 3: to bed at halftime last night. I think he was
- 26:58Speaker 3: still awake. He just walked in our room, and he's like,
- 27:01Speaker 3: good night. I was like, oh, good night. Norman's on
- 27:04Speaker 3: the bed now at 10.30 on a school night.
- 27:06Speaker 1: That a boy.
- 27:07Speaker 3: He just is up.
- 27:08Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 27:08Speaker 3: What are you going to do about it?
- 27:10Speaker 1: His season's over, right?
- 27:12Speaker 3: Alex?
- 27:13Speaker 1: His baseball season?
- 27:14Speaker 3: No, he's got two more games. Okay. Thunderbats, 8-1 Thunderbats.
- 27:18Speaker 3: We're going to be the second place out of 28 teams,
- 27:20Speaker 3: I think.
- 27:21Speaker 1: Nice.
- 27:21Speaker 3: Softball.
- 27:22Speaker 1: Do they have playoffs?
- 27:23Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 27:24Speaker 1: All right.
- 27:24Speaker 3: We're going to buy.
- 27:25Speaker 1: Let's go. Let's go.
- 27:27Speaker 3: Dude, I'm Emmy this week, buddy. Holy heck. She went
- 27:32Speaker 3: to the tournament Sunday. Close to the softball. How's Utah's program?
- 27:38Speaker 3: Can you guys recruit her?
- 27:41Speaker 1: Yes, we'll make a phone call. She wants to play Oregon.
- 27:43Speaker 1: I was like, that's too far away. Yeah, Utah's a
- 27:46Speaker 1: lot closer.
- 27:48Speaker 3: Certainly is. Perfect.
- 27:51Speaker 1: Last thing before we let you go, there's a There's
- 27:54Speaker 1: a problem. We were talking betting in the last segment.
- 27:58Speaker 1: There's a potential problem for all the BYU fans that
- 28:01Speaker 1: maybe put money on their team before the season started.
- 28:04Speaker 3: Oh, what's the problem?
- 28:05Speaker 1: Well, in the most recent general conference, the leadership of
- 28:14Speaker 1: the actual religion said, hey, we don't want you betting anymore,
- 28:17Speaker 1: so people have to back off the betting stuff. But
- 28:22Speaker 1: Now maybe they can't cash their bets. So I brought
- 28:25Speaker 1: up the tradition that exists with sometimes the goy, the
- 28:31Speaker 1: Shabbos goy, helping out an Orthodox Jewish family by turning
- 28:36Speaker 1: on the stove or the lights or whatever. And we
- 28:40Speaker 1: could serve that role for the BYU fans.
- 28:43Speaker 3: So we go in their account and cash their money
- 28:45Speaker 3: for them?
- 28:45Speaker 1: Yes, yes.
- 28:47Speaker 3: Or they can sell their ticket to somebody.
- 28:51Speaker 1: Well, there you go. You just solved the problem for us.
- 28:53Speaker 3: There's websites that you can put your ticket on there
- 28:55Speaker 3: and people will buy it for you.
- 28:56Speaker 1: You can sell your winning ticket on there and someone
- 28:57Speaker 1: can buy it at a discount, I imagine?
- 28:58Speaker 3: No, no, no. So let's say you took BYU to
- 29:02Speaker 3: win the Big 12 whenever it was 10 to 1
- 29:04Speaker 3: before the season.
- 29:05Speaker 1: Right.
- 29:06Speaker 3: You put $ 100 on it. It's probably worth, I don't know,
- 29:09Speaker 3: $ 300 now. Nice. So you sell it for like $ 300. Okay.
- 29:12Speaker 3: So you get a profit.
- 29:13Speaker 1: I didn't know about that. See?
- 29:14Speaker 3: And then they take your ticket over.
- 29:16Speaker 1: Perfect. We solved the problem.
- 29:18Speaker 3: That'd be great. What? The church was like, no more gambling?
- 29:24Speaker 1: I think that there's a recognition that everyone's losing money
- 29:28Speaker 1: doing these prediction markets and stuff. Do you have prediction
- 29:32Speaker 1: markets in Utah? Yeah, they do have prediction markets here.
- 29:36Speaker 1: It's strictly not legal, but how do you enforce it?
- 29:39Speaker 1: Because it's just on PSA. phones.
- 29:40Speaker 3: I love how PMs, they're absolutely gambling, but they somehow
- 29:44Speaker 3: get to avoid the regulation of gambling because of prediction markets.
- 29:47Speaker 1: 100%.
- 29:48Speaker 3: It's insane.
- 29:51Speaker 1: My wife showed me on the Robinhood stock trading app,
- 29:54Speaker 1: they have a prediction market section there. So you're just like,
- 29:58Speaker 1: It's just in your palm. I love it.
- 30:01Speaker 3: I haven't heard Robinhood in six years since we were
- 30:03Speaker 3: trading AMC stocks and COVID. Your wife is checking Robinhood often?
- 30:11Speaker 1: Dude, my wife is a shark on the Robinhood app.
- 30:15Speaker 1: She bets. Yeah, we went to fights the other night,
- 30:19Speaker 1: and then she went to the BYU game with her family,
- 30:23Speaker 1: and she called me celebrating not because BYU had won.
- 30:28Speaker 1: But because she had placed a bet on BYU, she
- 30:31Speaker 1: took them like... No, yeah, she did a... It was
- 30:35Speaker 1: like money line, like five to one on the prediction
- 30:38Speaker 1: market money line. So she's like, we're in the money.
- 30:40Speaker 1: I was like, what is wrong with you, degenerate?
- 30:43Speaker 3: So is she... I'm sure she's giving that money to you.
- 30:47Speaker 1: Oh, for sure. Yes.
- 30:50Speaker 3: I have so many Meredith stories. I know we don't
- 30:52Speaker 3: have time for Meredith stories. But she actually came to
- 30:54Speaker 3: Emmy Softball this weekend, and it was... An emeritus experience.
- 31:01Speaker 1: Did she, uh, was she playing the ponies at the.
- 31:03Speaker 3: No, but her cousin, her cousin might've been asked to
- 31:06Speaker 3: leave by the umpire for, for young umpire. So fun times,
- 31:10Speaker 3: sports household.
- 31:11Speaker 1: I love it so much.
- 31:13Speaker 3: The umpire to be fair was a little bit sensitive.
- 31:15Speaker 3: He missed a very bad call and people were, everyone
- 31:17Speaker 3: was yelling at him there. He was like, someone's got
- 31:19Speaker 3: to leave from the fans. And Charity was like, I
- 31:22Speaker 3: didn't want to leave anyway. There was about time to
- 31:24Speaker 3: leave anyways. They're like, fine, I'll just go. I think
- 31:26Speaker 3: a lot of parents said something to the umpire. It
- 31:28Speaker 3: was one of those where it was an easy rule
- 31:31Speaker 3: thing and he just didn't see it. And he actually
- 31:33Speaker 3: said to our coach, I didn't see it. It's probably
- 31:36Speaker 3: a bad answer.
- 31:37Speaker 1: I'm bothered that you deprived us of her on Real
- 31:39Speaker 1: Housewives of Charlotte.
- 31:42Speaker 3: Oh, I'm not. She's a good job. Let's hope she
- 31:44Speaker 3: keeps it.
- 31:46Speaker 1: All right. Thanks for joining me. Talk to you next week.
- 31:48Speaker 3: Take care, buddy. Talk to you. Enjoy staying up this weekend. Yes.
- 31:51Speaker 1: That's Jeff Schwartz. And we will be staying up this weekend,
- 31:55Speaker 1: by the way.
- 31:55Speaker 3: It is a.
- 31:56Speaker 1: Blackout game at Rice-Eccles Stadium. 8-15 kickoff, which really is
- 32:00Speaker 1: more like an 8-30 kickoff because they wait a little
- 32:04Speaker 1: bit to see if the game before is going to
- 32:06Speaker 1: end so you don't have to start on ESPN News.
- 32:09Speaker 1: They push it until about 8-30, and then you've got
- 32:11Speaker 1: to kick off.
