- 0:00Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, this is Phil Campbell from Phil Campbell and
- 0:04Speaker 1: the Bastard Sons, also ex Motorhead, and we're coming down
- 0:10Speaker 1: to Australia in September to rock the house. As we say,
- 0:16Speaker 1: fantastic Phil, thanks for joining us today. You're welcome, as you.
- 0:21Speaker 2: Say, Ray, Phil Campbell and the Bastard Son's hit Australia
- 0:23Speaker 2: for the first time ever this September, starting in Perth
- 0:26Speaker 2: on September sixteenth, before going to Adelaide, Brisbane, Sydney and
- 0:30Speaker 2: finishing in Melbourne on September twenty first mate, like how
- 0:33Speaker 2: you feel and conting new countries.
- 0:36Speaker 1: Yeah, it'd be really good. The boys are really stoked
- 0:39Speaker 1: to be down there for the first time. I think
- 0:43Speaker 1: it'd been like my fourth time down in your country,
- 0:47Speaker 1: and it's always been a blast down there, so we're
- 0:51Speaker 1: really looking forward to it. Yeah, we can't wait to
- 0:54Speaker 1: get stuck in.
- 0:55Speaker 2: No, as in the Big News brothers that not only
- 0:57Speaker 2: will you be playing songs from Phil Campbell in the
- 0:59Speaker 2: bast and Sons, but you're also performing as stacking Motorhead songs.
- 1:03Speaker 2: So is it going to be about a fifty fifty
- 1:05Speaker 2: ratio or are you going to favor one over the other.
- 1:08Speaker 1: Yeah, I'll be about fifty to fifty. We'll mix them
- 1:10Speaker 1: all in so nobody should go away disappointed. It'll be
- 1:15Speaker 1: something for everyone there.
- 1:18Speaker 2: Nice you were on sixteen Motorhead albums, bro, and there's
- 1:21Speaker 2: been heaps more. But how the fuck do you choose
- 1:24Speaker 2: a set list. It's going to appease as many people
- 1:26Speaker 2: as possible, and it'll be hard, wouldn't it.
- 1:30Speaker 1: It did? It did get harder over the over the years. Like, yeah,
- 1:35Speaker 1: we kind of we kind of knew after a while,
- 1:39Speaker 1: we kind of knew which songs really worked. But we
- 1:43Speaker 1: could have played for four hours if we were physically
- 1:46Speaker 1: capable really with the songs that people wanted us to play.
- 1:50Speaker 1: But you've got to you've got to play like Aces
- 1:53Speaker 1: of Speeds and things like that, you know, and a
- 1:56Speaker 1: few of the other ones. But we're going to try
- 1:59Speaker 1: and slip in some lesser known ones as well as
- 2:02Speaker 1: the classics on when we come Down as well, and
- 2:07Speaker 1: a bunch of songs original songs from from the Bostard
- 2:11Speaker 1: Sounds as well. So it should work out great.
- 2:15Speaker 2: Now you've obviously been playing the might Head songs with
- 2:18Speaker 2: the Bastard Sounds from war mate, but when you first
- 2:21Speaker 2: started playing them after Letting passed away, Like, how long
- 2:23Speaker 2: did it take you to be fully comfortable playing those
- 2:26Speaker 2: songs on stage?
- 2:27Speaker 1: I guess without him there, well, you just get on
- 2:31Speaker 1: and do it. I mean even to this day, you know,
- 2:35Speaker 1: sometimes on stage will be playing then you know, you
- 2:40Speaker 1: have the feeling that Lemmo's around or one of the
- 2:43Speaker 1: other band members are around. But you know, you you
- 2:49Speaker 1: see the joyant people got on their faces in the crowd,
- 2:52Speaker 1: and you just get on and give it your best shot,
- 2:57Speaker 1: like you know, but we do, we do play them,
- 3:00Speaker 1: We do play them well, we do do them justice.
- 3:02Speaker 1: It's never going to be Motorhead obviously without them, but
- 3:06Speaker 1: we give it a we give it a good shot,
- 3:08Speaker 1: you know, and it's be the only chance for you know,
- 3:13Speaker 1: especially younger Australians to viewered some of the motor Read
- 3:17Speaker 1: stuff with a with a band member playing them like
- 3:21Speaker 1: you know, so we get a lot of youngsters come
- 3:24Speaker 1: to our shows anyway, if we're playing Motorhead stuff all
- 3:27Speaker 1: our own stuff, you know, we get like older Modorread
- 3:33Speaker 1: fans bringing a young children to the shows. You know,
- 3:37Speaker 1: they just basically they're just turning them onto the good
- 3:40Speaker 1: live music because there's so much crap about these days
- 3:43Speaker 1: with the auto tuned voices and all that, and you know,
- 3:48Speaker 1: people miming and stuff. You know, so we're the real deal,
- 3:53Speaker 1: which is the way it should be.
- 3:55Speaker 2: Nice. I guess playing them with your boys that had
- 3:58Speaker 2: even more feeling for you. Like I've got one of
- 4:00Speaker 2: my best mates is in the band and he's a
- 4:02Speaker 2: singer and he's got his three sons playing with him too,
- 4:04Speaker 2: like they only do covers, but just the look on
- 4:07Speaker 2: his face so that it's pure enjoyment. Just being able
- 4:10Speaker 2: to share that experience with your kids like that must
- 4:12Speaker 2: be magnified.
- 4:13Speaker 1: For you, bro. Yeah, it was just great. I spend
- 4:17Speaker 1: a lot of a lot of the boy's formative views
- 4:21Speaker 1: away from him when I was so busy with Motorhead,
- 4:25Speaker 1: So it's great to be able to give something back,
- 4:28Speaker 1: you know, and spend time with them and still go
- 4:31Speaker 1: underworld in another kick ass rock and roll band. You know,
- 4:34Speaker 1: they deserve it. They're great players. The band is as
- 4:38Speaker 1: tight as hell that we have now, so they deserve it,
- 4:43Speaker 1: you know. They deserve to tread the boards and it's
- 4:47Speaker 1: a lot of fun. Yeah, I enjoy it.
- 4:49Speaker 2: Yeah, they would have grown up listening to my Thehead
- 4:52Speaker 2: team mates. So it's you're sitting their blood, so to speak.
- 4:54Speaker 2: But do you find that they digesting music differently being
- 4:58Speaker 2: from a different generation.
- 5:01Speaker 1: Well, well yeah they are. I grew up with the
- 5:07Speaker 1: stuff that I listened to and they grew up listening
- 5:10Speaker 1: to some of the stuff I listened to and like
- 5:13Speaker 1: the new waiver of bands that were coming along end.
- 5:15Speaker 1: So so one wee kind of write material now it's
- 5:21Speaker 1: it's it's like you've got the influence of like two
- 5:25Speaker 1: two generations at least, you know, with a material, you know,
- 5:30Speaker 1: so it all helps the more influences you've got. You know,
- 5:35Speaker 1: if you can, you can draw off it. And you know,
- 5:40Speaker 1: no no I'm not saying copy stuff. We don't do
- 5:43Speaker 1: that like you know, but to get it, there's nothing
- 5:45Speaker 1: wrong with being influenced by you know, good people.
- 5:50Speaker 2: Straight bro. And of course my head was a three
- 5:53Speaker 2: piece and Phil Camp when the Bastard Sounds are five piece, say,
- 5:56Speaker 2: how different is it playing those songs with a full
- 5:59Speaker 2: of band.
- 6:01Speaker 1: It's great, It's just still it's still really powerful. You know.
- 6:07Speaker 1: It takes a lot of pressure off me. I don't
- 6:09Speaker 1: have to do so many solos all the time. You know,
- 6:13Speaker 1: and with the writing process with the Bastard Sounds as well,
- 6:19Speaker 1: you know, there's five people contribute him instead of write three,
- 6:23Speaker 1: so I don't have to come up like a motred.
- 6:26Speaker 1: I used to have to come up with nearly all
- 6:28Speaker 1: the riffs and everything, you know, before we could before
- 6:33Speaker 1: we could start stuff. I mean, them came up with
- 6:36Speaker 1: every album. He came up with at least like two
- 6:39Speaker 1: two of his own songs more or less finished, you know,
- 6:43Speaker 1: and the majority of it was down to riffs and
- 6:48Speaker 1: ideas that I had. And the year after year, it
- 6:52Speaker 1: does it does get tough to come up with some
- 6:55Speaker 1: cool stuff like so, I mean, now in the Bastard Sons,
- 6:59Speaker 1: Todd comes up with some completed songs basically and different
- 7:05Speaker 1: riffs and so and I do the same. So it's
- 7:09Speaker 1: a bit easier for me unless solos. But I'm happy
- 7:14Speaker 1: about that.
- 7:17Speaker 2: Did you follow the order?
- 7:18Speaker 1: You get bright?
- 7:19Speaker 2: Like the more you sit back and let the hids
- 7:21Speaker 2: write the music and come up with a lot of it,
- 7:23Speaker 2: do you sort of hit back and play it or
- 7:25Speaker 2: do you still hands on?
- 7:28Speaker 1: No, I let them. I'm pretty lazy now, like you know,
- 7:33Speaker 1: I'll let them come up with some stuff, you know,
- 7:35Speaker 1: and I'll say what I think about it, and and
- 7:39Speaker 1: I'll come up with some stuff and they'll tell me
- 7:41Speaker 1: what you think about my stuff, and we just we
- 7:45Speaker 1: just work it in, blended in, and if something's not working,
- 7:48Speaker 1: we throw it out and something works. Or we could
- 7:51Speaker 1: have two ideas for two completely different songs and then
- 7:54Speaker 1: you find out they work together, like this could be
- 7:57Speaker 1: a verse or this bit could be a chorus in
- 7:59Speaker 1: the same songs. There's no rules, That's what That's what's
- 8:03Speaker 1: the fun with music, you know, there's no hard and
- 8:06Speaker 1: fast rules, basically telling you well you can't and what
- 8:10Speaker 1: you can't do. If it sounds good to you, then
- 8:12Speaker 1: it's faint.
- 8:15Speaker 2: And there's three of them and one of you. Though, bro, Like,
- 8:17Speaker 2: did they have a gang up on you and say Dad,
- 8:19Speaker 2: we're winning this argument?
- 8:21Speaker 1: A uh, well, they trade to they don't get very far. Well.
- 8:30Speaker 2: Much of the attention around Phil came when the basketd
- 8:32Speaker 2: Son centers around the family connection. You also, you got
- 8:35Speaker 2: Joe Peters out of the front mate. So he's only
- 8:38Speaker 2: been there for the one album, so tell us a
- 8:39Speaker 2: bit more about him.
- 8:42Speaker 1: Cool. Yeah, he's not far away from us. It's in
- 8:47Speaker 1: Bristol and he came along, he sent us some tapes
- 8:53Speaker 1: and uh, and then we got him down for a
- 8:56Speaker 1: rehearsal and ad and it sounds great. You know. It's
- 8:59Speaker 1: just the voice I really wanted for this band, and
- 9:06Speaker 1: it was fantastic on stage. Like, so it's working great.
- 9:12Speaker 2: Actually, just had another listen back three things that you
- 9:14Speaker 2: solid before the interview made and he can fucking sing
- 9:17Speaker 2: that like it's pretty good.
- 9:19Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I really. I mean, I like all our albums,
- 9:23Speaker 1: but the last one I think was more or less
- 9:29Speaker 1: of our defining sound what it should be in the band.
- 9:33Speaker 1: You know. Todd Todd produced this album again and it
- 9:36Speaker 1: was a really big, fat production sound on it, you know,
- 9:41Speaker 1: without being over produced, you know when yes, it's a
- 9:46Speaker 1: really good album. I think we should have another one
- 9:49Speaker 1: coming out next year. We've written we've got about eight
- 9:52Speaker 1: songs written and just recorded very roughly, so we don't
- 9:56Speaker 1: forget the damn things. But hopefully maybe the tail end
- 10:03Speaker 1: of this year or early next year we'll start to
- 10:06Speaker 1: record them in earnest so sometime next year, by the
- 10:12Speaker 1: end of the year at least, we should have a
- 10:14Speaker 1: new album out, hopefully.
- 10:17Speaker 2: And you find like when when you write down and
- 10:19Speaker 2: the creative process for new albums, like do you try
- 10:21Speaker 2: to experiment a little bit these days or you finding
- 10:24Speaker 2: more stuck in your ways now and you know what
- 10:26Speaker 2: works and that's what you're coming out with.
- 10:30Speaker 1: Yeah, we always we always try the experiment, like you know,
- 10:34Speaker 1: sometimes we just do the best we can at the time.
- 10:38Speaker 1: You know, as I said, there's no rules if we
- 10:42Speaker 1: want to for wanting to put a saxophone on the
- 10:45Speaker 1: track or you know, and anything, you know, we we
- 10:49Speaker 1: we'll go for it. If it works, it works, if
- 10:51Speaker 1: it doesn't, we will we won't do it. But we're
- 10:57Speaker 1: not giving ourselves any boundaries or anything like that, you know.
- 11:03Speaker 2: Those without saying brall, you've been around the music scene
- 11:05Speaker 2: for a long time. Your contribution to music has been exemporary.
- 11:08Speaker 2: But one day when you do call it a daybreak,
- 11:11Speaker 2: like what would you hope the inscription would be on
- 11:13Speaker 2: your musical team? Stone?
- 11:18Speaker 1: He had fun, short and sweet.
- 11:22Speaker 2: Yeah, fantastic, Phil, Thanks very much for your time again, Bro,
- 11:26Speaker 2: it's been absolutely pleasure. Best of luck with everything, and
- 11:28Speaker 2: we'll see you out here in September.
- 11:30Speaker 1: Okay, my friend, nice talking to you all the best
