  was a really simple, simple answer.

  So, as we said, we'd like to welcome, welcome Nolan to the

  that you sent our way. You know it's really easy to

  like you know kind of lean towards all the main events that

  we've grown up watching all the things have been influential
• 3:34
  throughout our wrestle fandom but I wanted to go a little more
• 3:37
  meta, as much as mad as things within XT during the Triple H,
• 3:41
  you know, generation can be. But to me one of my favorite
• 3:46
  matches because of the storytelling, the build the
• 3:50
  overall Arch Arc of the entire story.

  I had to go with Johnny Gargano facing off in an unsanctioned
• 3:59
  match against tommaso, Champa at NXT takeover.

  New Orleans, love it. What a, what a choice, like Jim

  said before we hit record, this is our first NXT match.

  I mean, if you weren't like you, anybody had to been in the thick
• 4:15
  of things at this point, like knee-deep, in all things.

  NXT, at this point, I was hooked this young black old nostalgic
• 4:24
  for what you're about, to say, the black and gold, right?

  Like I'm like, what it, what a time and place in.

  Like, I don't even think we fully unpacked how incredible
• 4:33
  that whole era was so like to pick.
• 4:36
  This match which really, like almost gets to the heart.
• 4:38
  This this rivalry, which lasted for quite some time.

  Obviously, from them being Partners DIY, it just it's
• 4:46
  amazing to go back and revisit it and it was such a treat.

  So thanks and this is 2018. This is the weekend of

  WrestleMania in New Orleans, five years ago, it's pretty

  incredible. It's an incredible match.

  It's the solid like 45 minutes. Like you said, it's unsanctioned

  I love Look of, you know, there's no referee in there.

  He's basically just there to count one, two, three, men.

  Any other reasons you pick this match and you know, the I'm very

  partial to Johnny Gargano because he's a fellow.

  Ohioan represent baby. All right, daddy, he's

  Cleveland. But I've always enjoyed their
• 5:29
  body of work, you know, when I was watching NXT during its
• 5:32
  Heyday and I hate to say that term but let's be honest.

  That was it. Yeah, the tape.

  The Takeover has really brought me in because of the
• 5:42
  storytelling. Obviously, the technical
• 5:45
  wrestling and all that was amazing on its own.

  But we're being introduced to all these new characters that
• 5:51
  you're not really going to see during the PG era of Raw and
• 5:55
  SmackDown for guys like us that are in our, you know, 30s 40s.

  Unfortunately for me, no 44. 30s.

  I mean, it was kind of like our that was our go-to, you know,
• 6:10
  without a doubt. This more friend, Jose more
• 6:13
  adult-oriented. I mean, did you guys hear the
• 6:15
  chants during the match? You're not going to hear that.

  A wrong are spectacular? No, not at all.

  Not at all. He's all right.

  I was gonna say, they subvert the chance to get like, you

  deserve this like to, you know, Chapel getting dropped.

  It's amazing. It's like, it's absolutely

  incredible and And I think that this is, in my opinion, you

  know, taking out the championship match that should

  have happened between the two. I feel that this was the

  absolute peak of Triple H has an x t.

  So it felt really nostalgic which is weird to say because

  it's only 5 years old, right to watch the match and just see how

  dial it in everything was back, then.

  It was just really kind of refreshing to see any kind of

  see shades That now you know yes with with Triple H's Raw and

  SmackDown. It's kind of like okay he's

  starting to introduce those elements and roll them out.

  Just he has to do it in a different way because of the

  audience, there's different like things that pop up in like we

  keep saying it's only 5 years old but there's little things

  that you forget about like I completely forgot about Champa,

  coming out to know music and just the being the booze.

  And I'm like, this is so good. Just him walking out in that
• 7:35
  ring gear. Here and just booze pouring all
• 7:38
  over him. The most nostalgic.

  Yeah, there you go. The most nostalgic part for me,

  though. Moreover, that low 100% hearing
• 7:47
  his voice on the call. I was like immediately
• 7:50
  transported back about how incredible this dude is.

  And man, he it was a true man. Just listen to.

  Yeah, I did. I don't even think he dropped

  them off. Yeah, there's something.

  It was so crazy because in my brain, I'm so used to like

  And all the Gargano signs on, like the eight and a half by

  and gold. The crowd itself is so in on the

  gimmick right there, like, so in on the stick that you couldn't

  pull off no music for an entrance in WWE.

  Now, Smackdown bra probably even NXT now, but like, it just the

  crowd itself is just another character in the whole story
• 8:54
  arc. And it's it's beautiful.

  It's also it's like no one said it's So Meta.

  It's like, it's just like wrestling inside of wrestling in

  Psych. Yeah, picture that keeps going.

  You know, it's just like you said for ra Group it's yet I

  don't know. It's something it just hits so

  write that. Yeah, it's hard to describe even

  know so in the match like it's just, it's the storytelling is

  excellent. Like Gargano gets the shit beat

  out of him very early on in this match and you just see the

  direction that it's going, like the crutches.

  Get involved at some point. They do they just sell the fact
• 9:30
  that it's unsanctioned to me though to not to jump the gun.

  It's A wild and maybe I'm just conditioned to the current state
• 9:39
  of aw and what's happening and what just happened in Puerto

  Rico with Brock. Like the fact that there was no
• 9:45
  blood in this match was almost surprising looking back on it.

  That there was no blood involved because I feel like in 2020 to
• 9:52
  2023, you would have seen But blood in that match.

  I don't think it's for lack of. I mean, I think it was a

  deliberate decision to do that. Agreed were all conscientious

  that. This was the beginning of yes or

  Arc. Without a deal, went full-on

  with blood and Crimson masks. You know?

  them, the project Champa the backstabber off the top made me

  cringe towards the end of the match to like the exposed

  concrete. Like, just Jesus Christ, man.

  Like, it's, so it's so cool and it was, it's got that little

  busted I right to like, well, yeah, you know what do you hat

  Jump In The Fray? Like you can't even tell like

  But anyway, yeah, I thought it was when Johnny d.

  Delivers the DIY kick, you know, he got there little thing in the

  corner and then hits him with the with the superkick.

  It looked like it could have been a glancing Blow from there.

  But you see the mouse building on the side.

  Oh my gosh. Chomp has, I it was just perfect

  for the ending of the entire match and just setting the

  stage. The emotion that is coming

  through. These two guys through the

  screen, morrow in the background, delivering it even

  further to it tomorrow. They don't.

  not trying to speak for you guys, but a lot of what got me

  into wrestling was the fact that it's was, like, real life comic

  books almost seeing. Yes, you know, these people kind

  of portray the drama and story telling and the, the colors and

  the Paw penis of a comic book. So, when Gargano started doing a

  lot of the Marvel themed, a tire, which were this He had a

  Thor Ragnarok, which was pretty sick, everyone.

  Everyone thinks about the Carnage, or The Punisher or Iron
• 13:40
  Man, or the Wolverine he did, but that, that, that Ragnarok
• 13:45
  gear was pretty slick. I've actually, I'm so I do DM's
• 13:49
  with Gargano and I might suggest for him.

  If he ever has like a high-profile Mania match, I want
• 13:56
  him to do Clone Wars or the spider-verse.

  Okay? That doesn't like you said, the

  reason why I ask is because this gear is probably one of my

  favorite of Gargano skiers. And like you said, he's noted

  for what he puts out there. You know, you kind of look at

  the colors, you see what he's wearing on the entrance jacket

  and this one hits for me. Yeah, I interesting story and

  not trying to toot my own horn. I'll toot a little bit.

  Okay, but the gear they had for take over after WrestleMania or

  before Russell. Many 37 was no sweet inspired by

  a drawing. I did for the ice a few months

  prior. That's awesome.

  like little transition and then show the wrestler with with the

  get off of this match for a little bit, the, when you had

  your artwork on was at NXT correct, when they had it for

  the way. That's one of my favorite

  pieces. I remember watching that live

  and I wasn't like a dedicated like, you know, start it right

  on time. It's usually when my wife goes

  to bed, I flick on whatever live wrestling there is.

  I've put it on and I remember being like, Oh my gosh, that's

  know. Nolan's artwork in the middle of

  the Ring. That's that's incredible.

  Like what does that feel? Like it was a bit of a bit of a

  whirlwind because Johnny deemed me, the night of my birthday and

  said, dude I have this amazing idea of something I want you to

  do and we're going to put it on TV and of course, what do you

  say to that? Yeah, don't say no right.

  But my wife was like, babe. I love you so much, but I have

  to do an all-nighter. I think I'd plug On it till

  about 5:00 in the morning. Oh my God I got started on it

  about 11 worked on until about 5:00 as much as I could write

  and then I send it off and then you know with a couple edits and

  then I was in contact with a producer that was that and and
• 16:50
  then I'm like the next day it was on TV because NXT why is

  days? Whoa.

  So um and then yeah so and so it was kind of wild but Johnny

  Johnny had this great idea in his mind he wanted If her son,

  if I each member of the way as a member of The Avengers, Johnny

  obviously Iron Man, right, you know, Candace was Thor.

  Austin was the Hulk and then Indy was like, black widow.

  So, just kind of fudge. Yeah, with stuff and made it

  happen. Incredible.

  You gotta love it. Like, when someone comes to you

  with an idea like that, you get that done, you do you usually,

  like you said, you pull an all-nighter?

  Yeah. And Johnny Johnny's kind of

  like, Seen as like the God for at the time he was seen as like,

  The Godfather and XT like he was very involved in the on the back

  end. So yeah, being able to do that

  was pretty special. And obviously now the Ohio

  connection is really cool to. That's so awesome.

  Yeah, you know I forgot you know because they had so many

  different matches just that piece of the knee brace getting

  involved to end. The match was incredible.

  Like you see the knee brace off in the middle of the Ring at one

  point and you're like oh yes now I remember what's going to

  happen and like I said it gets involved to finish the match and

  to me this is like a so we give our matches cans in the cooler.

  We follow Uncle Dave, meltzer's 5-star rating but we do at
• 18:24
  Cannes in the cooler. So for me personally, I give
• 18:28
  this 5 cans in the cooler. Typically not drawn to longer
• 18:31
  matches but the young thing Actioned and reminiscing about
• 18:35
  the storyline was incredible. So, thank you for bringing this
• 18:38
  but I'll let you go. I mean, I'm going to go 5
• 18:43
  because I mean yeah, it did have length but it had a great build
• 18:47
  up. You had mean almost like a year
• 18:49
  and a half long build-up. The audience was freaking insane
• 18:54
  and then just for like the last like six minutes of the match
• 18:58
  alone, just all the storytelling, they crammed into

  that, it just brought it all to this amazing Crescendo so yeah,

  five cans. Yeah, I'm right there with you.

  I'm sticking with the five, just the way I talk about the An

  earlier that just kind of came through the screen and when

  Champa sits there at the end and he's just shaking his head of

  like, how did we get here? Why did we get here?

  Johnny Goes to like, sit down next to him and then he takes

  that tommaso. Takes the swing at him with the

  with the leg brace. I was like holy shit, I forgot

  all about this. I'm completely engaged in this

  match. Yeah it was completely just

  captivating to me and you know, Johnny locks in the stf the The

  step-over told FaceLock, which we learned about last week

  fellas. But no, he locks that in.

  With the, with the knee brace over is over, Tomaso's face, and
• 19:50
  it's over and Candice running down was just that chefs.

  Kiss at the very end of just capping off the emotional
• 19:57
  emotionally draining match and Feud and where this was going.

  And man, thank you again for bringing this one out because it

  was awesome to go revisit. Wow, thanks guys. 350 make me be

  This is still an incredible match, the storylines crazy.

  Even just the promo. If you watch like before the

  match, like it gets you. So, back right back into it.

  Yep, it's amazing. And, you know, this thing's

  going on to it has not even reaches Crescendo yet.

  Like I said, as a wrestling fan and as an artist so are you, are

  you traditionally trained as an artist?
• 22:03
  Did you go to art school? Or are you more self-taught?

  It's I mean, I feel like most artists are self-taught.
• 22:12
  Yeah, I know. But they have school to kind of
• 22:14
  guide them and give them a lot. A lot of the professional tools
• 22:17
  to kind of cultivate over over the remainder of their careers.
• 22:21
  Yeah, I started drawing at the young age of three or four, you
• 22:25
  know, big Transformers and He Man Fan.
• 22:27
  All right. I then I you know graduated
• 22:30
  comic books You know, I was drawing Superman, Spidey all
• 22:36
  that stuff and then I was I became a wrestling fan around
• 22:39
  1990. I had a buddy that I was going
• 22:44
  to school with that was a huge hulkamaniac and he was telling
• 22:48
  me that earthquake broke Hulk Hogan's, read that the hulkster
• 22:53
  was in the hospital and he sent him a letter and he showed me
• 22:56
  the postcard with the, you know, the printed on.

  Yeah. Anyways, to make a long story
• 23:03
  Story short became a huge wrestling fan WrestleMania. 6 is
• 23:07
  the one that got me hooked, the ultimate Challenge from there, I
• 23:12
  kind of watched from afar but what brought me back was

  WrestleMania, 13 stone cold, Shawn Michaels Iron Mike Tyson
• 23:19
  or no wrestling 14:14. And then and then after that, I
• 23:24
  was just like hooked. Like I was obsessed.

  I was in art school doing. Backyard wrestling matches with
• 23:30
  my buddies. Yep, sounds like Jim and I Yeah,
