- 0:11Hello, friends. It's Sean.
- 0:13Here it is Wednesday. It is the middle of the week.
- 0:17It's hump day. We're just coming over the hump,
- 0:20ready for the back end of the week.
- 0:22And today we are going to finish off both the month of July and
- 0:28the main book of John. Yeah, tomorrow we continue with
- 0:32the epilogue, but today is the last chapter before that said
- 0:36epilogue. This is the day of glorious,
- 0:40glorious resurrection. Christ is risen.
- 0:44He is risen indeed. Are we allowed to say that on
- 0:47not Easter? It seems only appropriate if we
- 0:49are reading the resurrection story.
- 0:51This is a story, friends. This is the story.
- 0:54This is the part of the story that changes everything, that
- 0:58makes our faith something which is life changing, world changing
- 1:04on the most cosmic of all scales.
- 1:07Incredible when life conquers death and the God of the
- 1:13universe brings his Son back to save creation.
- 1:17Yes, yes, yes. Let us read this together.
- 1:22Reading together John chapter 20.
- 1:36Early on Sunday morning, while it was still dark, Mary
- 1:39Magdalene came to the tomb and found that the stone had been
- 1:43rolled away from the entrance. She ran and found Simon Peter
- 1:47and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved.
- 1:51She said they've taken the Lord's body out of the tomb and
- 1:54we don't know where they've put him.
- 1:57Peter and the other disciple started out for the tomb.
- 2:00They were both running, but the other disciple outran Peter and
- 2:04reached the tomb first. He stooped and looked in and saw
- 2:09the linen wrappings lying there, but he didn't go in.
- 2:13Then Simon Peter arrived and went inside.
- 2:16He also noticed the linen wrappings lying there, while the
- 2:19cloth that had covered Jesus head was folded up and lying
- 2:23apart from the other wrappings. Then the disciple who had
- 2:27reached the tomb first also went in, and he saw and believed, for
- 2:31until then they still hadn't understood the scriptures that
- 2:35said Jesus must rise from the dead.
- 2:38Then they went home. Mary was standing outside the
- 2:43tomb crying, and as she wept she stooped and looked in.
- 2:49She saw two white robed angels, one sitting at the head and the
- 2:54other at the foot of the place where the body of Jesus had been
- 2:57lying. Dear woman, why are you crying?
- 3:00The angels asked her. Because they have taken away my
- 3:04Lord, she replied. And I don't know where they have
- 3:08put him. She turned to leave and saw
- 3:12someone standing there. It was Jesus, but she didn't
- 3:16recognise him. Dear woman, why are you crying?
- 3:21Jesus asked her, Who were you looking for?
- 3:25She thought he was the gardener, Sir, she said, if you have taken
- 3:30him away, tell me where you have put him and I will go and get
- 3:34him, Mary, Jesus said. She turned to him and cried out,
- 3:40Rabboni, which is Hebrew for teacher.
- 3:44Don't cling to me, Jesus said, for I haven't yet ascended to
- 3:48the Father, but go find my brothers and tell them I am
- 3:53ascending to my Father, and your father to my God and your God.
- 3:59Mary Magdalene found the disciples and told them I've
- 4:03seen the Lord, and she gave them his message.
- 4:09That Sunday evening, the disciples were meeting behind
- 4:11locked doors because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders.
- 4:15Suddenly Jesus was standing there among them.
- 4:19Peace be with you, He said. As he spoke, He showed them the
- 4:24wounds in his hands and his side.
- 4:26They were filled with joy when they saw the Lord again.
- 4:30He said, Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I
- 4:36am sending you. Then he breathed on them and
- 4:39said, Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive anyone's sins,
- 4:45they are forgiven. If you do not forgive them, they
- 4:50are not forgiven. One of the disciples Thomas
- 4:55nicknamed the Twin, was not with the others when Jesus came.
- 4:59They told him, we have seen the Lord, but he replied, I won't
- 5:04believe it unless I see the nail wounds in his hands, put my
- 5:08fingers into them and place my hand into the wound in his side.
- 5:14Eight days later, the disciples were together again, and this
- 5:17time Thomas was with them. The doors were locked, but
- 5:21suddenly, as before, Jesus was standing among them.
- 5:25Peace be with you, he said. Then he said to Thomas, Put your
- 5:30finger here and look at my hands.
- 5:35Put your hand into the wound in my sight.
- 5:38Don't be faithless any longer. Believe my Lord and my God,
- 5:45Thomas exclaimed. Then Jesus told him, You believe
- 5:50because you have seen me. Blessed are those who believe
- 5:54without seeing me. The disciples saw Jesus do many
- 5:59other miraculous signs in addition to the ones recorded in
- 6:02this book, but these are written so that you may continue to
- 6:07believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and
- 6:13that by believing in Him you will have life by the power of
- 6:19His name. We love you, Jesus.
- 6:32We are so grateful for you. And John could not have made it
- 6:37any simpler. This is what you did.
- 6:41You came here, you lived your life, your perfect life.
- 6:45You showed us the nature of God and then you saved us and that
- 6:50all we are to do is believe in you and that you give us life in
- 6:58your name. Oh Jesus, your name is holy.
- 7:03Your name above every other names.
- 7:06We just worship you. We place you at the highest
- 7:10point in our lives, Lord. Whatever it is that would
- 7:13threaten to to feel more important than you, Lord, strip
- 7:17that away from us. Leave that throne bare so that
- 7:21you you can ascend and sit upon that throne in our hearts and in
- 7:27our lives, because that is where you ought to be and that is
- 7:31where we want you. Day after day, Lord, ascend to
- 7:36the throne of our hearts, so that you can rule our lives and
- 7:41we can serve no one but you, our incredible Saviour, in whose
- 7:48name we have life. And so we pray in that very
- 7:54name, Amen.
