Latest / Scripture Central / Peter & Paul’s Paradoxical Passages on Women: New Testament with Lynne Wilson (Come, Follow Me)
Transcript
- 0:00Hello, my name is Lynn Hilton Wilson and I'm giving a special
- 0:03edition on a come, follow me example of Peter and Paul's
- 0:08paradoxical passages on women. I've mentioned most of these
- 0:14things throughout each of the different epistles in the
- 0:16Apostolic Church, but I thought it would be helpful to bring it
- 0:19together and to talk about the challenges that the early church
- 0:24had and why. Sometimes we interpret some of
- 0:28these statements as misogynist, or I've even heard it stated at
- 0:32at Society of Biblical Literature meetings that the
- 0:35reason why we have a problem with gender in the world is
- 0:38because of some of these traditions that came from the
- 0:41biblical text. And I totally disagree.
- 0:44And I would like to defend not misogyny, but to defend the
- 0:50prophets and to say, let's really look what they're saying,
- 0:53Let's try to understand. And if we misunderstand, let's
- 0:56just wait because it doesn't fit with our modern prophets,
- 0:59because we're blessed to have both the written word and our
- 1:03modern prophets. Earlier I've discussed many
- 1:05times in the Gospels and in Christ's emancipation of women
- 1:10how Christ changed dramatically the culture.
- 1:14But many people have said what happened.
- 1:16If Christ made all these changes, why didn't it carry
- 1:19through? Well, I believe that not only
- 1:22did does it take time to grow and nurture things, but seeds of
- 1:26truth have to sprout. And it was very difficult when
- 1:30before the printing press, before we already read
- 1:32information, before you're able to get the text of the Bible.
- 1:36And it was difficult and it took time for people to understand.
- 1:40It's interesting to me to notice that the most literate nation in
- 1:43the world was early Americana, whereby the mid 16, hundreds,
- 1:4898% of Massachusetts is literate because they wanted people
- 1:52reading the Bible. And once they started reading
- 1:54the Bible 200 years later, they're starting to say why
- 1:58don't we have more equality between the genders?
- 2:00Why don't we give vote to the women, you know?
- 2:02So I just see these things took time to nurture and grow.
- 2:05It wasn't until we got into the text that we realized that there
- 2:08was a problem. When I refer to the Apostolic
- 2:11Church, I refer to the time of our Lords death until the time
- 2:16of Trajan and that's about 100. Trajan actually works until 110
- 2:21and we have records that John was living in Ephesus and
- 2:24guiding the church from Ephesus during the time of Trajan.
- 2:27So I'm going to approximately 33 to 100 but give or take a few
- 2:32years on either side. That is known as the Apostolic
- 2:35Church when John is still running the church.
- 2:37I also want to remind you that it's the Apostolic Church that
- 2:41recorded the Gospels. So with Luke's account we have
- 2:44one story of a man, one story of woman.
- 2:46All these are being recorded by the Apostolic Church.
- 2:50And if the Apostolate church has so many examples of women, not
- 2:55just in the gospels but in the afterwards in the epistles, that
- 3:00let's remember that if they are writing them down, that they
- 3:03were important to them. There are 180 references to
- 3:08women, 45 of those are names, 94 of the women are unnamed, 14 of
- 3:13the women are fictional, and the other ones are just references
- 3:15to them. You know he, she, her.
- 3:17But of these 45 named women, there are thirty female
- 3:20disciples who are noble and upright, And half of those noble
- 3:27and upright women are after the death of the Lord.
- 3:30They're referred to as mothers and Co workers, and witnesses,
- 3:33and disciples and servants of God and sisters, and even a
- 3:36deaconess and a wife and a yoke fellow, 1 prominent among the
- 3:40apostles. You know, these are all
- 3:41different translations, but I just want to remind you that
- 3:45sometimes when I ask my students, was Paul misogynist,
- 3:50they immediately say yes, and Peter too.
- 3:52But I would like to say the majority of the writings of Paul
- 3:57and Peter are the antithesis of that.
- 3:59That was the culture they were coming out of.
- 4:02That was where they were coming from.
- 4:03And so perhaps we're misreading some of those texts.
- 4:05Because when we look for female witnesses, when we look for
- 4:08women's voices, most of them are coming after, not before
- 4:13Christ's death. First of all are these house
- 4:15churches. We have these wonderful women
- 4:18who have opened up their homes. They're very wealthy, so they've
- 4:20got large spaces. And before we have church
- 4:22buildings, we see churches being gathered together in people's
- 4:26homes. In Jerusalem, it's at Mary's
- 4:28house, Mary the mother of John, Mark.
- 4:31And then we have Lydia and Chloe and Priscilla.
- 4:34We have women of faith like Tabitha and Eunice and Lois and
- 4:39Phoebe and Junia. And of these 94 unnamed women,
- 4:43we have some of those significant women in the entire
- 4:47New Testament. Do you remember in the book of
- 4:49Philippians it says these, those women's which labored with me in
- 4:54the gospel? We've got unnamed women who were
- 4:57missionaries and I love that. I mentioned this when we
- 5:01discussed Philippians already, that Paul refers to a very close
- 5:05female companion as a yoke fellow.
- 5:08Is it his wife? I don't know, but it's someone
- 5:10who is leading the women in that part of the church in Philippi.
- 5:17And in fact, in the book of Acts, we read that Phillips had
- 5:20four daughters. These are unnamed women, but
- 5:22with significant roles. These four daughters were
- 5:24virgins, which did prophecy. Yeah, by the fact that they're
- 5:28calling them virgins, that just mean they're not married yet.
- 5:29They're young. That means they're probably
- 5:31under, you know, they're in their ten, 11/12/13, maybe 14
- 5:36years old, but they're very, very young.
- 5:37And they already have the gift of of the spirit they're
- 5:40testifying. They're bearing their
- 5:42testimonies. That's Acts 21, verse eight and
- 5:44nine. Also in First Corinthians
- 5:47chapter 12, all on the gifts of the Spirit in the NIV.
- 5:50It reads now about the gifts of the spirit brothers and sisters
- 5:54and I'll skip down a little bit here, eagerly desire the gifts
- 5:58of the spirit, especially prophecy.
- 6:00And remember prophecy is defined in in by John the Revelator in.
- 6:04I think it's chapter 19, verse 10 as of Revelation as the
- 6:10testimony of Christ, the knowledge of Christ.
- 6:12And so he's saying I want you women to seek a strong testimony
- 6:16and to bear it. And if you are doing so, you
- 6:19have the gift of prophecy. This is powerful.
- 6:22However, most of you are saying by now, but what about those
- 6:25challenging verses? Because there are a few that are
- 6:28attributed to Peter and Paul that are terrible.
- 6:31They talk about spousal suggestion, they talk about
- 6:33women's hair and dress, and they talk about being silent.
- 6:36In the church, we have several different family codes of
- 6:40conduct, both in the Pauline corpus and in Peter's corpus.
- 6:43And Peter, It's first Peter, chapter 3, verse one through 9.
- 6:46And then in Ephesians it's chapter 5, verse 22 through
- 6:49chapter 6 through 9. And in Colossians it's chapter
- 6:533, verse 18 to chapter 4, verse one.
- 6:56And then in Titus it's chapter 2, verses one through 10.
- 7:00So let's look at some of those. They overlap so I only have the
- 7:02time now to look through one, but I've already gone through
- 7:04all of them. Let's just talk about this.
- 7:06The topic of marriage. Romans, Chapter 7, Corinthians
- 7:10Chapter 7, Timothy, chapter four and five.
- 7:13Ephesians 5, Hebrews 13. They are all and also First
- 7:17Peter chapter three. They all talk about marriage in
- 7:21positive light. Let's start looking at some of
- 7:23these family codes of conduct through the eyes of First Peter
- 7:26chapter 3, verse one. Likewise, ye wives being
- 7:29subjected to your own husbands, and if any obey not the word,
- 7:33They also may without the word be one with conversations of
- 7:38their wives. Now that's the King James.
- 7:40I appreciate John W Welch's book called Charting the New
- 7:44Testament, which is in our archives.
- 7:46If you want to go to Book of Mormon Central, you can look at
- 7:48it for free under the archives. It's He says a wife's obedience
- 7:55to her unchristian husband may influence the husband.
- 7:58Well, that's exactly what Peter's talking about there.
- 8:01He says wives, if you're married to someone who's not a member of
- 8:03the church, cooperate with him, Cooperate with him.
- 8:05And maybe because you're so kind, it'll help.
- 8:08I also like the New English Bible.
- 8:10Here it says in the same way you women must accept the authority
- 8:13of your husband's so that if there be any of them who
- 8:16disbelieve the gospel, they may be won over without a word being
- 8:20said. But I also want to go back to
- 8:23this word subjugation. I mentioned this many times
- 8:26throughout the year. It's.
- 8:27It's mentioned over and over in in the Gospels, 6 times in Peter
- 8:33and even more in Paul. You know, almost 30 times in the
- 8:36Pauline corpus. It comes from the Greek word
- 8:39Submit yourselves to every ordinance.
- 8:42Peter uses it in chapter 2 and also in chapter 5 Peter uses it.
- 8:46Likewise. You younger submit yourselves to
- 8:48the elder. You know, no one's very upset
- 8:51about those two, but for some reason we get upset when it's in
- 8:56the context of marriage. But let's just go back to the
- 8:59original meaning and we talked about this whenever it's been
- 9:02mentioned, but I'll just review it quickly.
- 9:04It was first a military to arrange in fashion under the
- 9:07command of the leader, but in a non military fashion.
- 9:11It had become a different definition and meant a voluntary
- 9:15attitude of giving in, cooperating, assuming
- 9:18responsibility and carrying the burden.
- 9:20So anytime you read the word subjugation or submission,
- 9:25remember it means to carry the burden to share, cooperate,
- 9:30assume responsibility. And so when we go to First Peter
- 9:33chapter 3 and read about this commandment for a wife to submit
- 9:37to her husband, just add in that word, cooperate with your
- 9:41husband, work together, share responsibility.
- 9:44But what we're also saying is in First Peter, Chapter 3, it says
- 9:48husbands love your wives. This is a radical change from
- 9:53the day and age, especially in the Greco Roman world where
- 9:55marriages are made for economic and social and familial
- 9:59convenience. And we even have Greek and Roman
- 10:03dramas about keep your keep your girlfriend beside you as a
- 10:06concubine and just marry your wife so that we can get the the
- 10:10will taken care of and the money can be taken care of.
- 10:12But keep your sweetheart as your concubine.
- 10:14You know, there's all these comedies that talk about this
- 10:17marriage was not for love. And yet Christian marriage,
- 10:20we're told to learn, learn to love each other.
- 10:23I'll read in commentary on this. This requirement was the new
- 10:27radical idea that Christian husbands who were to love and
- 10:32submit to their wives rather than to control them.
- 10:35That means love and cooperate with their wives rather than
- 10:38control them. It's very interesting, isn't it?
- 10:41I also appreciate our prophets writings on this, Russell M
- 10:44Nelson said. A husband and wife's stewardship
- 10:46is equally sacred and important, Do not involve any false ideas
- 10:51about domination or subordination, and earlier than
- 10:56that, Elder Packer said. In the church there is a
- 10:59distinct line of authority, but in the home it is a partnership
- 11:04with husband and wife equally yoked together, sharing
- 11:08indecisions, always working together, an earlier apostle
- 11:13said in 2004 Elder L Tom Perry In marriage, there is not a
- 11:17president or a vice president. The couple works together.
- 11:20They are on equal footing. I could keep going and going and
- 11:24going. Every new conference, I hear it
- 11:26again. Elder Bednar has said it
- 11:27recently. Elder Oaks has said it recently,
- 11:30but let's move on to Peter Chapter 3, verse 2.
- 11:34So he's talking about these unbelieving husbands while they
- 11:36behold your chaste conversation. That's that's meaning in King
- 11:40James. That means your lifestyle
- 11:41coupled with fear. Now fear just means respect.
- 11:44It's it's hard in King James. No wonder we have such a hard
- 11:47time with these words. Let's read other translations in
- 11:49the New Jerusalem Bible. It reads the same verses when
- 11:52they see the reverence and purity of your way of life.
- 11:55Now that is not offensive. And here's the Nas as they
- 11:59observe your chaste and respectful behavior.
- 12:02So if you're offended by the way some of these words are stated
- 12:06in the King James, just step out of the 16th century into the
- 12:1023rd century and go read another translation.
- 12:13My favorite ones are the BYU New Testament Commentary
- 12:17translations that they refer to as the new rendition.
- 12:21Continuing on now back in First Peter Chapter 3 now gives an
- 12:24example of Sarah as a good example to her to these sisters.
- 12:28And in the NIV it reads you are her daughters if you do what is
- 12:31right and do not give way to fear.
- 12:34So we say we don't want you to be fearing in in a in a
- 12:36beautiful Christian marriage we don't want you to have fear and
- 12:41and anxiety. No, we want you to have respect
- 12:44and love and compassion. I love the NAB.
- 12:47It says fear no intimidation. Or in the RSV let nothing
- 12:53terrify you. The Jerusalem Bible.
- 12:56Don't worry now. This is the way Christian
- 12:59marriages are to be. Nothing is supposed to cause
- 13:02anxiety. We're supposed to work together
- 13:04to become joint heirs. And that's where Peter goes next
- 13:07in verse 7. Likewise he husbands dwell with
- 13:11them according to knowledge, giving Otter honor unto the wife
- 13:16as unto the weaker vessel. We talked about that when I
- 13:19talked about Peter. That word it means not weaker
- 13:23vessel as it's translated. It means a special vessel, a
- 13:27special body, a unique and wonderful prized element.
- 13:32Look at how it's used all through the New Testament in the
- 13:34Greek, and you'll get a better feel for that word.
- 13:36Don't be offended by it as being heirs together of the grace of
- 13:41your ark of life. So Peter is saying women are not
- 13:46inferior in any way, they are going to be heirs together.
- 13:49And we continue reading in verse 7 and verse ten of Second Peter
- 13:54and Romans 8 and Titus and the Doctrine Covenants.
- 13:58All this idea of becoming a joint heir, of working together
- 14:02in cooperation to make a unified marriage where both the husband
- 14:06and the wife share the responsibility and the burden of
- 14:10bringing forth a family. First Peter chapter set 3 verse
- 14:14seven also gives a warning. He's saying you have to do this
- 14:17so that your prayers are not hindered.
- 14:19And then in verse 8 to 9 I'll continue on in the NIV.
- 14:22Finally, all of you be like minded, be sympathetic 1 to
- 14:26another, be compassionate and humble.
- 14:29Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult.
- 14:32On the contrary, repay evil with blessing.
- 14:36Because to this, you are called that you may inherit a blessing.
- 14:42You know, when we look at the King James Version, one reason
- 14:44why I quote so many other translations is because I feel
- 14:47like we miss we we we're giving our prophets a bad rap.
- 14:51They were, they are, they are encouraging mutuality and
- 14:55marriage. They are encouraging compassion
- 14:58and understanding and softness and gentleness and meekness and
- 15:02love unfeigned. So go to another translation and
- 15:05realize how many times we are talking about a wonderful
- 15:10relationship. It's no longer an eye for an
- 15:13eye. It's no longer a subordination
- 15:16and a strong patriarchy. You know, we are told again in
- 15:20another General Authority there's no patriarchy in
- 15:22matriarchy in the church. I also want to say that I
- 15:25believe Peter really did follow Christ as we read that Paul
- 15:31tried to follow the best he could too.
- 15:33Now remember, Paul is a Pharisee.
- 15:35He comes from a very different tradition, and he's a dynamic
- 15:39new convert. But sometimes it's hard to
- 15:41separate out some of those ideas that he was so entrenched in.
- 15:45So now let's look at some of the epistles.
- 15:47Remember, he only has half the story because it's only the
- 15:50writings. So let's start in First
- 15:52Corinthians. There are several challenging
- 15:54areas in First Corinthians. The first one is usually thought
- 15:58of as a Pharisaic dress code Chapter 11, and I completely
- 16:04disagree. I don't think it's talking about
- 16:06that at all. But in the Pharisaic thought, a
- 16:08man goes out bareheaded while a woman goes out with her head
- 16:13covered. And it's not just her head.
- 16:15The woman, if she was going to go outside, had to be completely
- 16:17covered head to toe, not even her ankles being seen and nor
- 16:22her eyes or her face. Everything is completely covered
- 16:25if she were a the Pharisaic tradition living in a place like
- 16:29Jerusalem. Now our artists always have the
- 16:32men covering their heads, but that tradition does not start
- 16:35until after the destruction of the Jerusalem Temple in 70 AD.
- 16:40So when Paul is writing this letter, the women were only
- 16:44allowed out of the house covered and the men did not cover their
- 16:47heads. If you want to go back and look
- 16:49at my First Corinthians Chapter 11, I talked a lot about it, but
- 16:52I just want to remind you that in the Pharisaic tradition, the
- 16:56women were veiled as a sign of subordination, as a sign we
- 17:00don't want you to be seen or heard if you're in the public.
- 17:03We'd rather you never be in the public, but in the Greco Roman
- 17:07world, which is most of the Corinthian converts, it was a
- 17:10fashion statement. We find coins where the wives of
- 17:14the Caesars had beautiful silks coming from their heads and we
- 17:19see a tradition on the sarcophaguses where women would
- 17:24often have a little veil on the back of their hair.
- 17:27We also see religious cults where women would sometimes
- 17:31cover their hair coming out of the Egyptian traditions and in
- 17:35the Arama Assyrian traditions this is going way back.
- 17:41A woman veiled her head because of a social status.
- 17:44It was used to show who was the wife.
- 17:46So the concubines did not get to veil their head.
- 17:49But the wife got to wear a veil so that everyone would know that
- 17:52she was the woman of status. But when we look at Paul's
- 17:55discussions on the veil, it means none of that.
- 17:58It doesn't have social status. It doesn't have subordination.
- 18:02The Christian veil, according to Paul's text in First
- 18:05Corinthians, is a veil of empowerment.
- 18:08Let's look at verse 2. Paul begins by saying keep the
- 18:11ordinances as I delivered them unto you.
- 18:14And then he skipping down a little bit, he says, I have
- 18:17received of the Lord that which I also delivered unto you.
- 18:21Now the word ordinance in modern translation is often changed to
- 18:24be teachings. So I wanted to see how does Paul
- 18:28use this word. Specifically, how does Paul use
- 18:30this word in this epistle? So I look it over and it's
- 18:35parodieses to hand over, to transmit, to deliver it up.
- 18:38And he uses it all the time, not only here in First Corinthians,
- 18:41but also in Second Thessalonians and in Galatians and in
- 18:44Colossians. It's used in mark, and
- 18:46consistently they are used to represent teachings from God
- 18:50that were given to the apostles. Joseph Smith also taught us that
- 18:55Paul and he later said the other early church members too knew
- 18:59all the ordinances and blessings that were in the church.
- 19:03You can see that on the Joseph Smith papers translation.
- 19:05So when Paul says I'm proud of you for keeping the ordinances,
- 19:09he then follows it up by saying, But I would have, you know,
- 19:12that's verse 3. And whenever he says that, it's
- 19:15sort of like turning around saying you're keeping the
- 19:17ordinances but you're not doing it right.
- 19:19And so he lines up this order of creation and he and in King
- 19:24James they use the word head. But that is a little bit tricky
- 19:27because the word in Greek, just like in English, there's two
- 19:30meanings. It means head and it means the
- 19:33source or the origin, like the head of the Nile or the origins
- 19:37of the of the river Jordan, you know, So when we read this, he
- 19:41organizes like the creation, this order of creation in a
- 19:45linear fashion. And he says, you know, God is
- 19:49the source of the Son of God, who is the source of Adam as his
- 19:53creator and who is the source of Eve as this rib tradition.
- 19:59But don't think that this word head in the King James refers to
- 20:04Archon, that means ruler or chief.
- 20:07And Paul uses that word elsewhere when he wants to talk
- 20:10about a ruler or chief. But when Paul uses the word
- 20:13cafal or what we translate as head in King James, he is
- 20:17talking about the source or the origin.
- 20:19And you can look up the other times he uses it too.
- 20:21He uses it for both the cranium and for the cafal.
- 20:25So he has this beautiful ordification, and in verse four
- 20:28he says every man praying or prophesying, having his head
- 20:33covered, dishonoureth his head. So just use it.
- 20:37Every man who covers his his crate, his skull, is
- 20:42dishonouring his source or his origin.
- 20:46Do you remember back to Genesis where we're told that God said
- 20:51let us make man in our image. Now in the NRV it says let us
- 20:54make mankind in our image because the next verse says male
- 20:57and female created he them, you know, so it it refers to both.
- 21:01But in Paul he doesn't want the female here, he wants a line.
- 21:05He wants Adam or man. Man is Adam in in Hebrew and it
- 21:10also means humanity. So it's tricky.
- 21:12But he wants them to represent their creator and he wants Eve
- 21:18to represent something different.
- 21:19So he says in verse five it's just fine for women to go around
- 21:23without their head covering most of the time in the Christian
- 21:26tradition. But in verse five, he says if
- 21:29you're in this ordinance, every woman that is praying and
- 21:33prophesying. So there's some kind of special
- 21:35ordinance that he's referring to where a woman is praying and
- 21:40testifying. Because remember, prophecy is
- 21:43testify where her head needs to be covered.
- 21:46So if she's in this prayer and she's speaking out of
- 21:50inspiration, it she needs to cover her head.
- 21:53It says every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head,
- 21:57that's this physical head uncovered dishonoreth her
- 22:02source. And that source is Adam, Jesus
- 22:07and the Father. So he's just gone through this
- 22:11order of creation so that we can understand where we're coming
- 22:13from. Now in the ancient world, having
- 22:16the female attached to God was a empowering stance, but he goes
- 22:23on to explain more about this. He says the man was created in
- 22:27the image of God and so he needs to represent the glory of God.
- 22:31But the woman is the glory of man.
- 22:35What does he mean by that? Well, I'll tell you right away.
- 22:39He does not mean woman was created to glorify man.
- 22:42We already know that from from, from Genesis.
- 22:45Woman was created to be a partner, to be a companion.
- 22:49My favorite translation, The TEB says he was created, she was
- 22:54created as his one from before. It is bone of his bones.
- 23:00So how then is woman the glory of man?
- 23:03Well, remember the word man is humanity.
- 23:07How is woman the glory of humanity?
- 23:09The only way humanity could come is through woman.
- 23:13So in this ordinance the female is representing the glorious
- 23:18nature of all of humanity, and the man is standing in the place
- 23:23of the Son of Man or of his head.
- 23:26So in this prayer we have symbolic roles of Adam and Eve,
- 23:31and Adam is representing His Creator, and Eve is representing
- 23:35all of mankind. And so as Eve comes before God
- 23:40in prayer, as if we were before our Creator our source, she is
- 23:45to humbly veil her glorious nature.
- 23:49It says in verse 10, For this cause ought the woman to have
- 23:52power on her head because of the angels.
- 23:55So we not only are veiling because we are respecting our
- 24:00source, our God we are and humbly coming before him, but we
- 24:05are veiling because it shows power.
- 24:08Now in the King James it says you have to have power on your
- 24:11head to join in this ordinance. But in the NIV it reads, a woman
- 24:15ought to have a sign of authority on her head because of
- 24:19the angels. So to enter this ordinance the
- 24:22women need to have a sign of authority.
- 24:25But what is the angels now? Joseph Smith only made one
- 24:28change to this entire chapter or this entire section on the veil.
- 24:33And this is very early. You know, he's doing this in
- 24:361832, way before any of the ordinances for the temple are
- 24:41restored. And so he changes that covering
- 24:45the head to a covering. He has to have a covering on her
- 24:49head because of the angels. Well, that is beautiful because
- 24:51the word atone in Hebrew is covering.
- 24:55But remember at the dedication of the temple of the Salt Lake
- 25:00Temple, Brigham Young Todd, that we needed to have angels to
- 25:07teach us the signs in order to return back to the presence of
- 25:09God. And so by just applying that
- 25:12statement that Brigham said at the dedication of the
- 25:15cornerstone of the Salt Lake Temple, women are in a place
- 25:20where they're having administration of angels and
- 25:22they need to be empowered with authority to pass by these
- 25:26angels in order to return to their creator.
- 25:29Continuing on in verse 11, it says neither is the man without
- 25:34the woman, neither the woman without the man in the Lord.
- 25:37This is such a beautiful reciprocal relationship.
- 25:41Adam was created 1st and Eve came from Adam.
- 25:44You know they needed the stem cells from the XY to get The xx
- 25:48but or whatever way the Lord did it.
- 25:51But the next generation, the man comes out of the woman, they are
- 25:56completely interdependent. If we are doing things in the
- 25:59Lord it only works if we work together.
- 26:03And I like another translation as well as verse verse 12.
- 26:06For as the woman is of the man, Even so is the man also by the
- 26:10woman, but all things of the Lord.
- 26:14Then we have two whole chapters on the gifts of the Spirit, 1st
- 26:17Corinthians 12 and 14. And remember, every time it says
- 26:20brethren, it refers to men and women, and the whole thing is
- 26:24encouraging. All the Saints, men, women,
- 26:27children, old, young join in the gifts of the Spirit.
- 26:31Interestingly, in these gifts the Spirit, five times from
- 26:36Chapter 11 and 12 and 14 it is referenced that women are to be
- 26:41preaching and prophesying and sharing in the worship service.
- 26:46If we look at all of the Pauline corpus, starting with Romans and
- 26:50including Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians,
- 26:52Philippians, Timothy, Titus and also the book of Acts.
- 26:54So everything that had Paul's influence.
- 26:57Remember, Acts is written by Luke and Lucas, Paul's
- 27:00companion. So if we look at all those 12
- 27:03times, we seek counsel for women to participate in church
- 27:06services, to be speaking and prophesying.
- 27:09So now when we go to chapter 14, to this difficult section, just
- 27:14remember we have all these many, many, many statements
- 27:17encouraging women to speak and serve and and build the Kingdom
- 27:21of God. Chapter 14, verse 31.
- 27:25For ye all may prophecy one by one that all may learn and all
- 27:29may be comforted. Now remember this time they're
- 27:32having a real problem with people speaking at the same time
- 27:35and they're drinking all the the sacrament wine and drunk before
- 27:39the other show up and and you know he's really having a
- 27:42problem with order in the meetings and he's talking about
- 27:45this over and over in this letter.
- 27:47I call it the spanking letter because he's just giving them
- 27:49corrections. But in verse 32 it says the
- 27:53spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets.
- 27:56And in verse 33, for God is not the author of confusion but of
- 28:00peace, the churches of the Saints.
- 28:03So then we go on to now verse 34 and 35.
- 28:06Now these two really don't quite fit the context.
- 28:10We've just been talking about the gifts of the spirit.
- 28:12And then he says, let your women keep silent in the churches.
- 28:15For it is not permitted for them to speak that they are commanded
- 28:18to be under obedience, as also saith the law.
- 28:22And as they will learn anything, let them ask their husbands at
- 28:25home. For it is a shame for a woman to
- 28:28speak. You know this this really
- 28:30contradicts everything that he just said.
- 28:32I mean it's just within a few verses, verse 31, he just said
- 28:36all the women should be prophesying.
- 28:37This is really changing. So let's look at some other
- 28:40translations. The the other says the woman
- 28:45should be reverent. Another said the woman shouldn't
- 28:47be chattering. Another one says the woman
- 28:50should be under obedience rather than supportive.
- 28:53And Joseph Smith changes it and says the women were not
- 28:57permitted to rule in the church rather than speak in the church.
- 29:01And Joseph Smith takes it right back to authority, as I
- 29:03mentioned earlier. So what is the problem here?
- 29:07To me it looks like the Well, it's not just to me.
- 29:09The I've read this from the textual scholars.
- 29:11For thousands of years people have been studying the text in
- 29:14Greek and they say there's a disconnect here.
- 29:17You know these two verses don't belong.
- 29:20They they, they they were put in here so then they look, could
- 29:24this be a later edition? Well, it does sound like it's
- 29:27coming from the Gnostics. It sounds like the Judaizers
- 29:30ideas, it sounds like the false teachings, it sounds like
- 29:33leftover Pharisaic ideas. Well also then I took one of my
- 29:39favorite scholars and went back and said was this these two
- 29:43verses in the oldest text? So we went to the we don't know
- 29:47who was the oldest, but we know that the text from Ephesus was
- 29:51guarded over by John for a long time and these verses were not
- 29:56there. These verses also were added in
- 29:58different orders elsewhere because they didn't know where
- 30:00to put them. I think they're in addition, I
- 30:02don't think they're Pauline. So when you come across these
- 30:05difficult verses, ask yourself a few questions.
- 30:08Did the author mean this? Was there a specific problem?
- 30:12Is this message consistent in Scripture?
- 30:14What do other translations say? Did Joseph change this verse?
- 30:18What was this question that brought out this answer?
- 30:22And most importantly for me, is this in keeping with Lauder's
- 30:26revelation? Because if it's not part of our
- 30:28restored church, we don't have to worry about it.
- 30:31So let's now look at another challenging one.
- 30:33First Timothy, chapter 2, verse 9 through 14.
- 30:37This whole section is on replacing worldliness or self
- 30:41promotion with selfless service, so some of the vocabulary is
- 30:47tricky. So let's now go to a topic of
- 30:51prayer. First Timothy chapter 2, verse
- 30:53nine says when women pray, they should be shamefaced and have
- 30:57sobriety. We don't use that word very
- 31:00often. Shamefacedness.
- 31:01I haven't heard it ever on the last year outside of Scripture
- 31:05context. So let's look at some modern
- 31:07translations. The Jerusalem Bible.
- 31:10Women should pray quietly and modestly, or the Nas modestly
- 31:15and discreetly, or the RSV modestly and sensibly.
- 31:20I also appreciate John W Welch's translation here in good taste
- 31:25and in a manner that brings honor, honorable, respect.
- 31:29If this is very different, we want the women there in a in a
- 31:32way that will bless the church. Look at verse 11 of chapter 2.
- 31:38Let the women learn in silence with all subjection.
- 31:41That's the KJV. Well, any of us who are learning
- 31:43in silence would know better. I I raised my kids in different
- 31:47countries and in France there was no talking in the schoolroom
- 31:53starting in second grade, no talking.
- 31:56The children sat down and did not speak again until they were
- 32:00called upon by the teacher. This is very different than and
- 32:04they learn so fast. We're talking about a quiet
- 32:08environment possibly here, I'm not sure.
- 32:10But let's just think about isn't it always easier to learn in a
- 32:13quiet environment? The Neb says a woman must be a
- 32:18learner listening quietly with do submission.
- 32:23The JB says during instruction. So the bottom line is all of
- 32:27these women are to be learning. All of these women are given
- 32:30guidelines on the best way to learn.
- 32:32Now this is a dramatic change. Remember, in the Judaic world,
- 32:35there are statements in the Mishnah.
- 32:37Now that's written a little bit later, but there are statements
- 32:39that say he who teaches her daughter the the law the same as
- 32:44taught her lechery. There are statements that say
- 32:47don't allow your women to become literate because they'll be a
- 32:50pain. We don't want them to learn to
- 32:52read and write. You know, we have all this stuff
- 32:54that that took women away from this, and now in Christianity we
- 32:58have a liberation. As I mentioned, the Christ was
- 33:01the first feminist, and I believe the early Apostolic
- 33:04Church is encouraging this. We want women learning the
- 33:07gospel, We want them learning, and we're going to now show you
- 33:11that it's best to learn in a quiet environment.
- 33:14However, in chapter two of First Timothy, verse 15, it sounds
- 33:19like Paul's giving some pretty misogynist advice here.
- 33:23You know your women shouldn't be talking, they shouldn't be
- 33:24invited. You know, it sounds like he's
- 33:26just punching him in the nose. I'd like to read from the NASB
- 33:29translation though from 2:15, but women will be preserved
- 33:36through bearing of children if they continue in faith and love
- 33:40and sanctity with self restraint.
- 33:43Well, that doesn't really sound too right because a lot of women
- 33:47can't bear children. Let's just talk about the great
- 33:49Sarah. How many years was she
- 33:51infertile? And how many women have never
- 33:54had the chance to bear a child? I mean, that doesn't make sense
- 33:57at all. Women are covered by the
- 33:59Atonement of Jesus Christ. Of course they will be saved.
- 34:03So I'm very grateful that Joseph Smith changed this first and he
- 34:07didn't say a woman will be saved through childbearing.
- 34:11He said, They, Adam and Eve, humanity, if we the purpose of
- 34:18this earth is to bring forth bodies for the spirit children
- 34:22of the sons of God, and to learn to control those bodies, and to
- 34:26come unto Christ by allowing those bodies to learn an adept
- 34:31line upon line. And so the Joseph translation
- 34:34changed that they shall be saved in childbearing.
- 34:38Does everyone bear children? No, of course not.
- 34:42But it is not a requirement for women.
- 34:44It is a requirement for men and women to marry and bear
- 34:49children. I also appreciate this another
- 34:53translation. This is the ISV, the
- 34:55international standard version, even though she will be saved
- 35:00through the birth of the child if they continue in faith, love,
- 35:05holiness along with good judgement.
- 35:08So he's saying the woman will be saved.
- 35:12And I would like to add the man everyone by the birth of the
- 35:17child, with a capital C referring to our savior,
- 35:21referring to our creator. It is he who will save us.
- 35:24To me, this fits doctrinally much better with what I
- 35:27understand. But I do believe that Christ's
- 35:32emphasis to cut down misogyny and to raise up women and to
- 35:36heal the family unit, It's horrific for a man who has to
- 35:40always be a a master working with a slave to ever develop
- 35:44charity. Whereas if he sees that they
- 35:48need to work together, that they need to be a unified family
- 35:52organization, that they can treat everyone with respect and
- 35:55dignity, whether a child or a slave or a wife.
- 35:58You know, let's treat everyone with love.
- 36:01I see the things that Christ taught us about servitude
- 36:06overlapping into the Apostolic Church.
- 36:08And I hope as you study this year, the New Testament, that
- 36:13you will step back and take take a pause at some of these very
- 36:17difficult verses as I've combined them here to realize
- 36:21that our Savior has tried to open the doorway for mutuality
- 36:25in all relationships, not just in marital relationships.
- 36:41But so that we can be kinder
