- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Wednesday, it's the 25th of
- 0:17June. Great to have your company as we
- 0:19continue to read another chapter of God's Word today and on this
- 0:24day. Did you realise today, 25th of
- 0:27June, all those years ago, in 1903, that's literally 122 years
- 0:33ago, George Orwell was born. If you don't recognise the name,
- 0:37he's the guy that wrote Animal Farm who wrote 1984.
- 0:41These books that eerily looked into the future and reflected
- 0:46exactly what would be going wrong.
- 0:48I don't know if you've read any of his books recently, but they
- 0:51still continue to be just as unsettling in the way they shine
- 0:55a light on some truths of our time.
- 0:58Who knew all that time ago we would be so predictable and here
- 1:01we are. And as people are so
- 1:03predictable, Deuteronomy is Moses taking his time to say,
- 1:07guys, I know that you're going to go the wrong way.
- 1:10And I know it's going to be hard to just stick to the one thing
- 1:13that God's going to ask us to do.
- 1:15So this is how we're going to do it and lays out the game plan.
- 1:19And today he continues doing that as he unpacks the 4th
- 1:23commandment, which is about what we owe God.
- 1:27So let us continue to unpack this as we read together
- 1:31Deuteronomy chapter 15. At the end of every 7th year,
- 1:46you must cancel the debts of everyone who owes you money.
- 1:50This is how it must be done. Everyone must cancel the loans
- 1:54they have made to their fellow Israelites.
- 1:56They must not demand payment from their neighbour or
- 1:58relatives, for the Lord's time of release has arrived.
- 2:03This release from debt, however, applies only to your fellow
- 2:06Israelites, not to the foreigners living among you.
- 2:10There should be no pour among you, for the Lord your God will
- 2:13greatly bless you and the land He is giving you as a special
- 2:17possession. You will receive this blessing
- 2:20if you are careful to obey all the commands of the Lord your
- 2:24God that I'm giving you today. The Lord your God will bless you
- 2:28as He has promised. You will lend money to many
- 2:31nations, but will never need to borrow.
- 2:34You will rule many nations, but they will not rule over you.
- 2:39But if there are any poor Israelites in your towns, when
- 2:42you arrive in the land the Lord your God is giving you, do not
- 2:45be hard hearted or tight fisted toward them.
- 2:49Instead, be generous and lend them whatever they need.
- 2:52Do not be mean spirited and refuse someone alone because the
- 2:56year of cancelling debts is close at hand.
- 2:59If you refuse to make the loan and the needy person cries out
- 3:03to the Lord, you will be considered guilty of sin.
- 3:07Give generously to the poor, not grudgingly, for the Lord your
- 3:11God will bless you in everything you do.
- 3:15There will always be some in the land who are poor.
- 3:18That is why I am commanding you to share freely with the poor
- 3:22and with other Israelites in need.
- 3:25If a fellow Hebrew sells himself or herself to be your servant
- 3:29and serves you for six years, in the 7th year you must set that
- 3:34servant free. When you release the male
- 3:37servant, do not send him away empty handed.
- 3:40Give him a generous farewell gift from your flock, your
- 3:43threshing floor, and your wine press.
- 3:46Share with him some of the bounty with which the Lord your
- 3:49God has blessed you. Remember that you were once
- 3:53slaves in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God redeemed you.
- 3:57That is why I am giving you this command.
- 4:01But suppose your servant says I will not leave you because he
- 4:05loves you and your family and he has done well with you.
- 4:09In that case, take an all and push it through his earlobe into
- 4:14the door. After that, he will be your
- 4:17servant for life, and do the same for your female servants.
- 4:22You must not consider it a hardship when you release your
- 4:25servants. Remember that for six years they
- 4:28have given you service worth double the wage of hired
- 4:31workers, and the Lord your God will bless you in all you do.
- 4:38You must set aside for the Lord your God all first born males
- 4:41from your flocks and herds. Do not use the first born of
- 4:45your herds to work your fields, and do not shear the first born
- 4:49of your flocks. Instead, you and your family
- 4:52must eat these animals in the presence of the Lord your God
- 4:56each year at the place He chooses.
- 4:59But if this first born animal has any defect, such as lameness
- 5:03or blindness, or if anything else is wrong with it, you must
- 5:07not sacrifice it to the Lord your God.
- 5:10Instead, use it for food for your family in your hometown.
- 5:15Anyone, whether ceremonially clean or unclean, may eat it,
- 5:20just as anyone may eat a gazelle or deer.
- 5:23But you must not consume the blood.
- 5:25You must pour it out on the ground like water.
- 5:38Oh Jesus, thank you for this revolutionary way of looking at
- 5:42our possessions. Everything we have is yours and
- 5:46is a gift from You on the way that You encouraged your people
- 5:51to live as they move into this land, to be so free in sharing
- 5:57and giving generously with those in their community.
- 6:00Lord, I pray that that would rub off on us, that we would see the
- 6:05blessings you have given us as a way that we can bless our
- 6:08communities and that we won't hold so tightly onto our own
- 6:12possessions, but see them as Your gift to us that we can
- 6:17enjoy and share with others. Our Lord, crack open our hearts.
- 6:25Our hearts that a modern world can certainly make selfish so
- 6:29that we can truly be your generous people, generous in
- 6:33love, generous in our time, generous with our possessions.
- 6:39Because you were so generous with us, Father, you gave us
- 6:43your son, your most precious possession so that we could be
- 6:48with you. Oh, thank you.
- 6:51We just praise you and put you at the highest place of honour
- 6:55in our lives. And pray all of this in the name
- 6:59of your loving Son, Jesus, Amen.
