- 0:32Speaker 2: locker room. I think we're going to hold off on the,
- 0:33Speaker 2: are we going to hold off on the, We'll let
- 0:36Speaker 2: Max do that next segment, the emergence of Optimus Prime,
- 0:41Speaker 2: because we have a special guest joining us in the
- 0:46Speaker 2: locker room. I don't want this to be in any
- 0:50Speaker 2: way telling you to go find the Colts broadcast on Sunday.
- 0:55Speaker 2: We want you to find the Steelers broadcast on Sunday.
- 0:57Speaker 2: But Matt Taylor is a play-by-play man for the really
- 1:00Speaker 2: excellent Colts broadcast and is joining us now. Um, Matt,
- 1:05Speaker 2: first of all, I want to say, thanks for being
- 1:07Speaker 2: with us. Secondly, I will be huddling with you to
- 1:09Speaker 2: make sure I have the myriad of interesting names in
- 1:12Speaker 2: your roster pronounced correctly for the game on Sunday.
- 1:16Speaker 3: Oh yeah.
- 1:17Speaker 4: Anytime the Colts have a couple of guys, it seems
- 1:20Speaker 4: like every, every roster nowadays as the game becomes more
- 1:24Speaker 4: international and more global, uh, the phonetics are, uh, even more, uh,
- 1:29Speaker 4: no pun intended, more, more pronounced and more important. And, uh, Yeah,
- 1:34Speaker 4: that's a big part of every pregame ritual now is
- 1:37Speaker 4: to make sure you get these names right because they're
- 1:39Speaker 4: coming from every part of the globe nowadays.
- 1:42Speaker 2: Yeah, the Bengals have the all-initial team. Like everybody in
- 1:45Speaker 2: their team is B-J or D-J or J-D or B-F
- 1:49Speaker 2: or whatever. And then the Colts have the pronunciations that
- 1:53Speaker 2: are interesting. We'll get to those. What about this? Matt,
- 1:56Speaker 2: tell me about this Colts team because when you guys
- 2:00Speaker 2: came to Pittsburgh last year, The team was really in
- 2:04Speaker 2: good shape. I think they were 7-1 at the time.
- 2:07Speaker 2: Lost to the Steelers, won the next week, then lost
- 2:10Speaker 2: seven in a row. Daniel Jones was hurt. Obviously, that
- 2:13Speaker 2: was a huge part of that. Lost the first two
- 2:16Speaker 2: games this year, so suddenly you're looking at a nine-game
- 2:18Speaker 2: losing streak, but have won the last two. So, where
- 2:22Speaker 2: does this team sit? You know, under Shane Steichen, it's
- 2:26Speaker 2: been 9-8, 8-9, 8-9. I think the Probably the tendency
- 2:30Speaker 2: is to look at them as kind of an average
- 2:32Speaker 2: football team, which is not a horrible thing, obviously. Two
- 2:36Speaker 2: and two this year. Where do they sit, Matt? What
- 2:38Speaker 2: do we expect to see here?
- 2:41Speaker 4: Well, you laid it out pretty well right there. There's
- 2:44Speaker 4: been a lot of highs. There's been some lows. It's
- 2:46Speaker 4: definitely been a roller coaster last 17 or 18 months
- 2:50Speaker 4: with this franchise. You mentioned it, you know, getting off
- 2:53Speaker 4: to that great start last year, seven and one. and
- 2:57Speaker 4: they were just beating the you-know-what out of teams. I mean,
- 2:59Speaker 4: their average margin of victory through the first 10 games
- 3:02Speaker 4: last year was 14.5, which, you know, I mean, you
- 3:06Speaker 4: just don't see that in the NFL. And then, unfortunately,
- 3:11Speaker 4: the reality was they lost some of their key players
- 3:14Speaker 4: on both sides of the ball at the most inopportune time.
- 3:19Speaker 4: You know, the schedule heated up on them down the
- 3:21Speaker 4: stretch of that season, and they played the biggest games
- 3:24Speaker 4: of the year, without Daniel Jones and DeForest Buckner and
- 3:28Speaker 4: Charverius Ward and Sauce Gardner and some other guys. And
- 3:32Speaker 4: so they lost their last nine games or seven games,
- 3:36Speaker 4: I should say, last year. And five of those games
- 3:39Speaker 4: were decided by one score. So they were right there.
- 3:43Speaker 4: But listen, coulda, woulda, shoulda, man. I mean, there's no
- 3:46Speaker 4: more victories in the NFL. So, I mean, it was
- 3:48Speaker 4: just a really disappointing way to end the year. The
- 3:52Speaker 4: Colts last year became... the first team in NFL history
- 3:56Speaker 4: to start eight and two or better and not make
- 4:00Speaker 4: the playoffs. So, I mean, it was just a really
- 4:02Speaker 4: dubious way to end the year. And then this year
- 4:05Speaker 4: they lose their first two games. And, you know, one
- 4:08Speaker 4: of those was a 33 to 30 overtime loss to
- 4:11Speaker 4: Kansas city, a game they probably should have won and
- 4:14Speaker 4: didn't make enough plays. And unfortunately the early part of
- 4:18Speaker 4: this year, you had some themes that, that came back up,
- 4:21Speaker 4: not being able to win close games, not being able
- 4:24Speaker 4: to close games out against the better competition in the
- 4:27Speaker 4: AFC and really league-wide. So they've won their last two,
- 4:32Speaker 4: which is good. But to be fair, those two teams
- 4:35Speaker 4: that they've beaten, the Texans and the Commanders combined one
- 4:39Speaker 4: and seven. Those offenses are terrible. The Colts played them.
- 4:43Speaker 4: They played Houston without Nico Collins. They played the Commanders
- 4:46Speaker 4: last week without Terry McLaurin. They were used a third
- 4:50Speaker 4: string quarterback for most of that game last week in London.
- 4:53Speaker 4: If you guys got up early to watch that game,
- 4:55Speaker 4: it wasn't pretty. So, you know, listen, two and two
- 4:59Speaker 4: is good, but this is a huge test for the
- 5:02Speaker 4: Colts to go on the road and play a good
- 5:04Speaker 4: Pittsburgh team. And like you said, go back to the
- 5:07Speaker 4: scene of the crime from last year where they were
- 5:11Speaker 4: riding high. And then after that Pittsburgh game, you know,
- 5:14Speaker 4: DeForest Buckner got banged up in that game, had the
- 5:16Speaker 4: neck injury and just, that game kind of like set
- 5:19Speaker 4: the tone in a bad way for the Colts. After
- 5:21Speaker 4: that game, things just slowly started to unravel in a
- 5:25Speaker 4: bad way down the stretch.
- 5:29Speaker 5: Yeah, and Matt, I think that's kind of, you know,
- 5:32Speaker 5: where we kind of leave it, right? It was a
- 5:34Speaker 5: tale of two teams kind of going in and separating
- 5:37Speaker 5: manners last year. But like you said, coming in this
- 5:40Speaker 5: year and looking at kind of where the team stands,
- 5:44Speaker 5: you know, I look at last week and, I think
- 5:47Speaker 5: having DeForest Buckner, Latu, and all those guys kind of rallying,
- 5:51Speaker 5: how do you think the team is adjusting to going on?
- 5:55Speaker 5: Because normally teams that go on the international trip usually
- 5:57Speaker 5: take the bye after that. And obviously the Colts forego
- 6:01Speaker 5: that in their scheduling. How do you think that's going
- 6:04Speaker 5: to affect them with that time change and coming back
- 6:08Speaker 5: onto these and then having to travel really again after
- 6:10Speaker 5: you get back home?
- 6:12Speaker 4: Yeah, it's interesting. I mean, both the Colts and the
- 6:15Speaker 4: Commanders last week, neither team elected to take their bye.
- 6:19Speaker 4: Neither team wanted to have an early bye week five
- 6:22Speaker 4: this early in the season, which you can understand. I mean,
- 6:24Speaker 4: it just makes for a long back half of the season,
- 6:27Speaker 4: if you will, if you want to put it that way.
- 6:30Speaker 4: So yeah, that's a theme of this game. You've got
- 6:32Speaker 4: a team on long rest in those Steelers on nine days,
- 6:36Speaker 4: and then the Colts on, I don't know if it's
- 6:38Speaker 4: short rest, but shorter rest because of the eight or
- 6:42Speaker 4: nine hour flight home back from London and then, you know,
- 6:45Speaker 4: acclimating to a couple of different time zones. You know,
- 6:49Speaker 4: I'm not, I don't pretend to be a world-class professional
- 6:52Speaker 4: NFL athlete, but only speaking for myself, guys, you know,
- 6:56Speaker 4: I just got back to normal last night. You know,
- 7:00Speaker 4: I just now kind of slogged off the sluggishness of,
- 7:05Speaker 4: you know, a short week and, you know, being, displaced for,
- 7:09Speaker 4: for that short of time and then having to come
- 7:11Speaker 4: back on Eastern time zone. So, you know, I think
- 7:14Speaker 4: it's probably fair to say that guys are just now
- 7:16Speaker 4: kind of getting back into, you know, their normal routines
- 7:19Speaker 4: and feeling good about where they're at from a body
- 7:21Speaker 4: acclimation standpoint. So we'll see how it manifests itself. I mean,
- 7:25Speaker 4: I think now it's, it's a storyline, but I think
- 7:28Speaker 4: once you get to, you know, noon or one o'clock on,
- 7:31Speaker 4: on Sunday, I think all that kind of goes out
- 7:33Speaker 4: the window and then you got, you have guys just
- 7:35Speaker 4: playing football and then May the best team win, and
- 7:38Speaker 4: the team that makes the fewest mistakes is probably going
- 7:40Speaker 4: to be the winner. And then for the Colts in
- 7:43Speaker 4: that regard, you've got to clean up the turnovers. When
- 7:46Speaker 4: you talk about mistakes, the Colts have been so plagued
- 7:49Speaker 4: with giveaways the last couple of games. I mean, Daniel
- 7:52Speaker 4: Jones has five turnovers the last two games, and that's
- 7:55Speaker 4: not good going into that environment in that stadium with
- 7:58Speaker 4: the crowd and that defense, which already has eight takeaways,
- 8:02Speaker 4: number two in the NFL. So that's something that's got
- 8:05Speaker 4: to be cleaned up, especially last year. Colts had six giveaways,
- 8:09Speaker 4: five sacks on Daniel Jones. It was just a nightmare
- 8:12Speaker 4: trying to move the ball consistently against that defense.
- 8:16Speaker 6: One of the sore spots on the defense is there
- 8:19Speaker 6: at the safety position. Obviously, we're hoping we'll get back
- 8:23Speaker 6: to Sean Elliott soon. We know you guys have Ty Warren,
- 8:27Speaker 6: a big time tight end who I followed in college
- 8:29Speaker 6: and continue to follow. I think he's had a productive
- 8:31Speaker 6: career thus far. Do you feel like he needs to
- 8:34Speaker 6: be more utilized for the Colts to have a more stable,
- 8:38Speaker 6: I guess, a more opportunistic chance on winning Sunday?
- 8:44Speaker 4: Well, I mean, it's kind of a catch-22 so far
- 8:46Speaker 4: with Warren. He's got 23 catches already, which is, I think,
- 8:49Speaker 4: second most among tight ends league-wide in terms of grabs.
- 8:54Speaker 4: So he's been heavily utilized where you want to see
- 8:56Speaker 4: Tyler Warren be more impactful is just yards per catch.
- 9:00Speaker 4: He's got 23 grabs for less than 10 yards per
- 9:02Speaker 4: catch in terms of an average this year. So that's
- 9:06Speaker 4: the biggest problem for the Colts. I mean, Warren's kind
- 9:09Speaker 4: of a microcosm of that is, you know, Colts, they
- 9:12Speaker 4: lost Alec Pierce. You know, you guys know Pierce is
- 9:15Speaker 4: such a great dynamic receiver. He can really stretch the defense.
- 9:19Speaker 4: It's not just the plays that Pierce produces down the field.
- 9:22Speaker 4: It's the threat of Pierce because he's out there every play,
- 9:25Speaker 4: and the defense has to respect that. So they've lost
- 9:28Speaker 4: that component of their offense, which made them really special
- 9:32Speaker 4: last year in those first 10 games that we talked
- 9:34Speaker 4: about when everybody was healthy. And you're feeling the negative
- 9:38Speaker 4: effect of Pierce in his absence. I mean, the Colts
- 9:41Speaker 4: only have nine completions all year over 20 yards, and
- 9:47Speaker 4: Daniel Jones has yards per attempt number hovering. just under six.
- 9:52Speaker 4: I mean, last year he was at 8.1. I mean,
- 9:55Speaker 4: that's a drastic difference, as you guys know, in terms
- 9:57Speaker 4: of being able to move the ball. So, you know,
- 10:00Speaker 4: the Colts right now from a, I guess you would
- 10:04Speaker 4: call it from an identity standpoint on offense, they're a
- 10:08Speaker 4: very long drive, possession, you know, run the ball team.
- 10:12Speaker 4: You know, they want to score in 8, 9, 10 plays,
- 10:16Speaker 4: milk some clock. get some key third down conversions because
- 10:21Speaker 4: they're just not the explosive offense that they could have
- 10:25Speaker 4: been last year when Pierce was healthy, which means you
- 10:29Speaker 4: got to stay on schedule. You know, you got to
- 10:31Speaker 4: run the ball well on first and second down. And
- 10:34Speaker 4: anything that could disrupt you can really set you back.
- 10:37Speaker 4: You know, a tackle for loss, a sack, a penalty,
- 10:41Speaker 4: obviously a takeaway, which is so concerning when you play
- 10:44Speaker 4: the Steelers defense. So you can't get behind on the chains.
- 10:47Speaker 4: And you also can't get behind on the scoreboard from
- 10:50Speaker 4: a stylistic standpoint on who the Colts are right now
- 10:53Speaker 4: on offense without Alec Pierce.
- 10:56Speaker 2: Interesting offseason in that the Colts traded Michael Pittman to
- 11:01Speaker 2: the Steelers and signed Keenan Allen kind of to take
- 11:03Speaker 2: his place. Somewhat similar receivers, I think, big guys. You
- 11:08Speaker 2: expect him to make catches. You expect him to pick
- 11:10Speaker 2: up first downs. We haven't really seen, Matt, Michael Pittman
- 11:14Speaker 2: at his best. I was really– I was bullish on
- 11:18Speaker 2: that pickup for the Steelers because he's a big target.
- 11:21Speaker 2: We've seen him be an excellent blocker. He has a
- 11:25Speaker 2: reputation for having sure hands, although he's had a couple
- 11:28Speaker 2: of drops this year. Hasn't really quite caught hold, but
- 11:33Speaker 2: when he's playing well and when he's healthy and when
- 11:36Speaker 2: he's got a rapport with Aaron Rodgers at his best,
- 11:38Speaker 2: how would you describe Michael Pittman to Steelers fans?
- 11:42Speaker 4: Well, just backing up a little bit from a Colts standpoint,
- 11:47Speaker 4: You know, this was a weird offseason for the Colts
- 11:49Speaker 4: in free agency because, you know, it hasn't worked out
- 11:53Speaker 4: with Anthony Richardson. So the franchise quarterback, you know, from
- 11:58Speaker 4: a perfect world standpoint for the Colts, Anthony Richardson would
- 12:02Speaker 4: be this team's quarterback and he'd be on the last
- 12:04Speaker 4: year of a rookie contract. Well, Daniel Jones was on
- 12:07Speaker 4: a one-year deal last year and hit free agency again.
- 12:10Speaker 4: So the Colts had to pay that quarterback position back.
- 12:13Speaker 4: they had to pay that guy way more than they
- 12:16Speaker 4: wanted to much earlier than they wanted to because of
- 12:19Speaker 4: Anthony Richardson, not being the starter here. So when you
- 12:22Speaker 4: pay Daniel Jones or the quarterback spot, 40 plus million
- 12:26Speaker 4: dollars a year, and then you re-sign Alec Pierce, which
- 12:29Speaker 4: I thought was the right move to do for the Colts.
- 12:32Speaker 4: When you pay Pierce north of $ 25 million a year,
- 12:36Speaker 4: you got to have, you have to make some tough decisions.
- 12:38Speaker 4: and that's where Pittman kind of fell by the wayside
- 12:43Speaker 4: for the Colts because it was going to be tough
- 12:45Speaker 4: to pay the quarterback 40-plus, another receiver 25-plus, and Pittman
- 12:50Speaker 4: was under contract for, I believe, just over $ 21 million
- 12:53Speaker 4: a year. So had to make a tough call there,
- 12:57Speaker 4: and so it really wasn't because they wanted to rid
- 13:00Speaker 4: themselves of Michael Pittman or they didn't value him at all.
- 13:03Speaker 4: It was financials more so than anything else. But when
- 13:07Speaker 4: Pittman's playing well, I mean, Pittman's got the fifth most
- 13:10Speaker 4: targets and catches in Colts history. And this is going
- 13:13Speaker 4: to sound like I'm sliding him, but it's really a compliment.
- 13:16Speaker 4: You know, Pittman historically, you know, around here, we used
- 13:19Speaker 4: to say Pittman is like a tight end and a
- 13:22Speaker 4: wide receiver's body. because he's big, he's strong. Like you said,
- 13:26Speaker 4: he's bought into the running game. He's a really physical
- 13:30Speaker 4: and willing blocker on the outside. So he's good, you know,
- 13:33Speaker 4: just for the mentality of the offense. But he makes
- 13:36Speaker 4: a lot of his catches historically between the numbers and
- 13:40Speaker 4: 15 to 20 yards down the field and his yards
- 13:43Speaker 4: per catch number they're they're kind of in line with
- 13:46Speaker 4: a tight end you know somewhere between 10 and 15
- 13:49Speaker 4: yards not like a number one wide receiver so it
- 13:52Speaker 4: was kind of a polarizing guy in that regard around
- 13:55Speaker 4: here for the Colts because as far as the Colts
- 13:57Speaker 4: offense was concerned he was the number one target but
- 14:01Speaker 4: a lot of fantasy football owners looked at him and
- 14:03Speaker 4: say well he's not truly a number one guy because
- 14:06Speaker 4: of the yardage the yards per catch and you know,
- 14:09Speaker 4: the run after the catch stuff, the big plays, that's
- 14:12Speaker 4: just not who Pittman, that's not who he is in
- 14:15Speaker 4: terms of production. So I think if Steelers fans know
- 14:19Speaker 4: that now going forward, that might change your perspective on
- 14:23Speaker 4: what to expect out of Pittman. But I mean, he's
- 14:25Speaker 4: one of the best leaders or was one of the
- 14:27Speaker 4: best leaders here for the Colts, completely bought into the
- 14:30Speaker 4: running game and just a really down and dirty physical
- 14:33Speaker 4: receiver that can do a lot of different things.
- 14:37Speaker 7: No, love that insight.
- 14:39Speaker 5: And I think for our listeners out there and Steelers Nation,
- 14:42Speaker 5: I think that's a very key thing to understand because
- 14:44Speaker 5: I think.
- 14:45Speaker 7: People look at it and you see big, tall, fast receiver.
- 14:48Speaker 5: He's got to be the stretch the field guy and
- 14:51Speaker 5: he's the one that's going to run away and burn
- 14:53Speaker 5: with you.
- 14:54Speaker 7: But I think that was a great insight.
- 14:55Speaker 5: So we really appreciate that from someone who's covered him
- 14:59Speaker 5: for multiple years and us just getting.
- 15:01Speaker 7: To know him indeed. And, you know, I want to look,
- 15:04Speaker 7: I want.
- 15:04Speaker 5: To turn to the defensive side of the ball and
- 15:06Speaker 5: just kind of, where you see the progression of this
- 15:09Speaker 5: defense and, and kind of, kind of what's your kind
- 15:13Speaker 5: of expectation is for this group. I know, you know,
- 15:16Speaker 5: dealing with some injuries, but you know, how do you
- 15:18Speaker 5: see this group kind of progressing and, and, and how
- 15:21Speaker 5: they've done so far this season?
- 15:23Speaker 4: Well, it's been a tale of two, two different sets
- 15:26Speaker 4: of games. You know, the first two games, they play
- 15:28Speaker 4: the chiefs and the Ravens, and you've got two great
- 15:31Speaker 4: quarterbacks there and Lamar Jackson and Patrick Mahomes. And unfortunately
- 15:35Speaker 4: those two guys feasted, you know, the, The Chiefs and
- 15:37Speaker 4: Ravens combined for over 1,000 yards against the Colts. The
- 15:41Speaker 4: Colts gave up a lot of big plays in the
- 15:43Speaker 4: passing game, and there was some miscommunication. They had some
- 15:47Speaker 4: green dot communication errors between the linebacker. It seems like
- 15:52Speaker 4: forever ago for NFL standards, but Colts week one, they
- 15:57Speaker 4: were having their green dot communicator be the safety cam
- 16:00Speaker 4: bind them, and it was a disaster. Colts couldn't get
- 16:03Speaker 4: lined up in time, couldn't get lined up right. They
- 16:06Speaker 4: were giving up big plays. So they changed that really
- 16:09Speaker 4: quick and pivoted, and now it's the linebacker, Akeem Davis-Gaither,
- 16:13Speaker 4: taking on that role. That seems to have smoothed out
- 16:17Speaker 4: a little bit. The big plays have been, they're still
- 16:19Speaker 4: showing up, but they're not nearly as prevalent as they
- 16:22Speaker 4: were the first two games. But like I said, the
- 16:24Speaker 4: last two games, you're playing two-bet offenses. And to the
- 16:27Speaker 4: Colts credit, they're holding those teams down. Colts have given
- 16:30Speaker 4: up just a hair over 500 yards combined the last
- 16:34Speaker 4: two games after giving up over a thousand yards the
- 16:37Speaker 4: first two games. So, you know, it's one of those
- 16:40Speaker 4: things where I don't really feel like we know who
- 16:43Speaker 4: the Colts are yet because they've either played, you know,
- 16:46Speaker 4: future Hall of Fame quarterbacks or they've played, you know,
- 16:49Speaker 4: two bad offenses that can't get out of their own
- 16:52Speaker 4: way a little bit. So, We'll find out more on Sunday,
- 16:55Speaker 4: but I think the strength of that unit so far
- 16:58Speaker 4: is their interior pass rush and their defensive tackles. I mean,
- 17:03Speaker 4: across the board, those guys are balling out. DeForest Buckner
- 17:06Speaker 4: is back coming off the neck surgery, and he looks
- 17:09Speaker 4: like he did four or five years ago. Heck, maybe
- 17:12Speaker 4: even better based on the way he's playing, and they
- 17:14Speaker 4: really have good depth this year for the first time
- 17:16Speaker 4: in a long time on the inside. They've got Adetamu Adebare,
- 17:20Speaker 4: who's really, really quality. Jerry Tillery, who they picked up
- 17:24Speaker 4: in the offseason in free agency, he's given them some
- 17:26Speaker 4: nice run. What they need to find is consistency on
- 17:30Speaker 4: the outside because I think they only have 10 sacks
- 17:33Speaker 4: on the year, and one and a half of that
- 17:35Speaker 4: total is coming from the outside. You know, the defensive ends,
- 17:38Speaker 4: you know, Layatu, Latu, and Arden Key, and Key's out.
- 17:42Speaker 4: Key's going to miss some time with a hamstring injury.
- 17:45Speaker 4: He's not going to play on Sunday. So the Colts
- 17:47Speaker 4: have got to figure that part of the defense out.
- 17:51Speaker 6: Let's talk about the secondary. Sauce Gardner was supposed to
- 17:54Speaker 6: be one of your bright spots, obviously coming off the
- 17:57Speaker 6: trade from the Jets. How would you assess his time
- 18:00Speaker 6: thus far as a Colt?
- 18:03Speaker 4: Well, it's been up and down. I mean, the Colts,
- 18:06Speaker 4: they picked him up at the trade deadline last year
- 18:08Speaker 4: and gave up two first-round picks to do so, which
- 18:12Speaker 4: I personally loved it. I love going bold like that
- 18:14Speaker 4: to get what I always call a premium player playing
- 18:18Speaker 4: a premium position. But Early dividends, they didn't pay off
- 18:22Speaker 4: last year because he got hurt, so he missed the
- 18:24Speaker 4: last couple of games of the season last year with
- 18:27Speaker 4: a calf injury. And this year, he's been either not
- 18:32Speaker 4: tested or has given up some big plays. Last week
- 18:35Speaker 4: in Washington, he had maybe, at least statistically anyways, one
- 18:40Speaker 4: of the worst games of his career. He allowed five
- 18:43Speaker 4: completions for 117 yards and a touchdown of 47 yards. And,
- 18:48Speaker 4: you know, what kind of raised some red flags there is, again,
- 18:51Speaker 4: it's Washington. You know, you gave up two big plays
- 18:54Speaker 4: to guys like Traylon Burks and Deami Brown. No disrespect
- 18:58Speaker 4: to those guys, but it's not like giving up over
- 19:00Speaker 4: 100 yards and a touchdown to, you know, Jamar Chase
- 19:04Speaker 4: or Justin Jefferson, right? I mean, all due respect to
- 19:06Speaker 4: those guys. So, you know, he knew he didn't play
- 19:09Speaker 4: very well last week, and he owned it a little
- 19:13Speaker 4: bit and actually used the word embarrassed multiple times, said
- 19:16Speaker 4: he was embarrassed about that production. So I think in
- 19:19Speaker 4: theory on paper, the Colts have two elite shutdown corners
- 19:24Speaker 4: on opposite sides of the field and, and Charverius Ward
- 19:28Speaker 4: and sauce Gardner. And I think for the most part,
- 19:30Speaker 4: those two guys have played well this year. What's hurt
- 19:33Speaker 4: the Colts is the middle of the field, given a
- 19:35Speaker 4: big plays on long developing routes because the pass rush
- 19:40Speaker 4: has given time for those routes to develop. You know,
- 19:42Speaker 4: the long crossers or the deep overs in the middle
- 19:46Speaker 4: of the field have really hurt the Colts when it
- 19:48Speaker 4: comes to trying to cover for a long time late
- 19:51Speaker 4: in the down you know speedy receivers who can get
- 19:53Speaker 4: open for guys that can get them to football like
- 19:56Speaker 4: in the first two games with Lamar Jackson and Patrick Mahomes.
- 20:00Speaker 2: Well that is Matt Taylor outstanding play-by-play man for the
- 20:03Speaker 2: Indianapolis Colts Matt I look forward to seeing you on
- 20:06Speaker 2: Sunday Thanks very much for your time and insight, man.
- 20:09Speaker 2: Really appreciate it.
- 20:11Speaker 4: Yeah, likewise, guys. Good to be with you and looking
- 20:13Speaker 4: forward to it.
- 20:14Speaker 2: All right, that is Matt Taylor, Indianapolis Colts. Big, big
- 20:17Speaker 2: game for these two teams. Every game, of course, is
- 20:20Speaker 2: a big game in the AFC North. We're going to
- 20:22Speaker 2: dive into this weekend's action within the division when we
- 20:26Speaker 2: continue here in the locker room on the Steelers Audio Network.
- 20:33Speaker 1: This is In the Locker Room with Rob King, Max Starks,
- 20:37Speaker 1: and Willie Colon on Steelers Nation Radio. Brought to you
- 20:40Speaker 1: in part by the Steelers Pro Shop. Get it direct
- 20:44Speaker 1: from the team at the Steelers Pro Shop at shop.steelers.com.
- 20:48Speaker 1: And by your neighborhood Ford store. The F-150 is the
- 20:52Speaker 1: official truck of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
- 21:02Speaker 7: Oh, you know what time it is. I mean, obviously
- 21:04Speaker 7: we had a guest.
- 21:05Speaker 5: We had the great play-by-play for the Indianapolis Colts, Matt
- 21:08Speaker 5: Taylor joining us. So Optimus, you know, gives us a
- 21:13Speaker 5: opportunity for the greatest 45 minutes. Not necessarily the power hour,
- 21:18Speaker 5: but the power three-quarter hour. So with that, we now
- 21:23Speaker 5: say adieu to hour number two, a.k.a.
- 21:26Speaker 7: The power three-quarter hour.
- 21:29Speaker 2: Yeah, the first 15 minutes in the books. Time for
- 21:32Speaker 2: our AFC North preview as we look forward to the
- 21:34Speaker 2: games in the division that are big ones brought to
- 21:37Speaker 2: you by your neighborhood fortune. The F-150 is the official
- 21:40Speaker 2: truck of the Pittsburgh Steelers. So we know about the
- 21:44Speaker 2: Steelers coach. We're going to be talking a lot about that.
- 21:46Speaker 2: It is a big game when you think about positioning
- 21:50Speaker 2: in the AFC. You go down the standings. Buffalo is
- 21:55Speaker 2: at 3-1, but in the AFC East, you have one
- 21:58Speaker 2: 2-2 team. That's New England. Of course, the Steelers have
- 22:00Speaker 2: already lost to them. I know we're a long way
- 22:03Speaker 2: away from looking at playoffs. Still, we're doing that now.
- 22:07Speaker 2: Pittsburgh and Cincinnati are 2-2. Indianapolis is 2-2. Denver's 2-2.
- 22:13Speaker 2: There's a lot of.
- 22:15Speaker 3: Teams.
- 22:16Speaker 2: There's some 0-4 teams maybe separating themselves in the wrong direction.
- 22:19Speaker 2: But at 2-2, you want to begin to separate yourselves.
- 22:23Speaker 2: If you're the Steelers, you already have one non-conference AFC loss.
- 22:26Speaker 2: You definitely... you don't want to make it two non-division losses.
- 22:32Speaker 2: I mean, you have two conference losses already. So it's
- 22:36Speaker 2: a big game for the Steelers. We know that. But
- 22:38Speaker 2: as we look at the other games around the division, Max,
- 22:42Speaker 2: beginning with the Bengals and the Dolphins, this one would
- 22:46Speaker 2: seem to me, with the Bengals being six-and-a-half-point favorites, to
- 22:51Speaker 2: be one you can almost automatically chalk up in the
- 22:54Speaker 2: win column. They get Miami because of where the team's
- 22:58Speaker 2: finished in their respective divisions a year ago. So the
- 23:01Speaker 2: Steelers have a first-place schedule. The Bengals get a team.
- 23:04Speaker 2: So the Steelers get the Eagles and the Broncos and
- 23:08Speaker 2: the top-flight teams because of that first-place finish. The Bengals
- 23:14Speaker 2: get the Dolphins. And I would think this is– you
- 23:18Speaker 2: can't chalk up anything in the win column yet, but
- 23:20Speaker 2: I've got my pen hovered over another W here for
- 23:23Speaker 2: the Bengals.
- 23:25Speaker 5: Yeah, I think you have to just go ahead and
- 23:28Speaker 5: say this is going to be a street fight for
- 23:29Speaker 5: the rest of the division for the rest of the year. And,
- 23:32Speaker 5: you know, the Bengals are sitting in the catbird seat.
- 23:35Speaker 5: But the good thing is at least we have a
- 23:36Speaker 5: victory over them right now. I think that's the biggest
- 23:39Speaker 5: thing that we can look forward to is that, hey,
- 23:43Speaker 5: you know, we're going to have to climb our way
- 23:45Speaker 5: out of it because of the first place Cleveland Browns.
- 23:48Speaker 7: Does that seem.
- 23:50Speaker 2: Weird for everybody to say? It's hard to say.
- 23:52Speaker 5: It does not roll off the tongue very easily. So
- 23:57Speaker 5: I get it, but at the same time, I mean,
- 24:00Speaker 5: this is one where, you know, when you win a
- 24:03Speaker 5: division comes a first-place schedule, and that's what we have
- 24:07Speaker 5: to kind of get ourselves resigned to the fact that
- 24:09Speaker 5: it's going to be tough sledding, especially the second half
- 24:11Speaker 5: of the year. It's going to be a challenge, and
- 24:14Speaker 5: we're going to have to make sure that we're on
- 24:16Speaker 5: top of our P's and Q's And you've got to
- 24:18Speaker 5: win the games that you can because it's going to
- 24:20Speaker 5: come some games, like you said, later in the year
- 24:23Speaker 5: that this division race and a playoff spot is going
- 24:26Speaker 5: to matter that we have to be in position to
- 24:29Speaker 5: be successful.
- 24:31Speaker 2: You know, Willie, I probably would have chalked this– I
- 24:34Speaker 2: probably would have just scratched this off without any further
- 24:37Speaker 2: conversation at all. But we were talking about belief yesterday,
- 24:42Speaker 2: the power of belief in your own football team. And
- 24:45Speaker 2: I believe you said you think– that the Dolphins are
- 24:48Speaker 2: showing some belief in what they're doing as they try
- 24:51Speaker 2: to rebuild. It's clearly a rebuild season for them. I
- 24:56Speaker 2: think I've categorized that correctly, your comments from yesterday. And
- 24:59Speaker 2: if so, does that make them a little bit of
- 25:02Speaker 2: a dangerous team at home where the Bengals better make
- 25:06Speaker 2: sure they're ready to go?
- 25:08Speaker 6: Yeah, because Jeff Halfley, who was the defensive coordinator for
- 25:12Speaker 6: the Green Bay Packers, is now the head coach of
- 25:13Speaker 6: the Miami Dolphins. he has been able to show his
- 25:16Speaker 6: superpower and allowing that defense to come into fruition. And
- 25:20Speaker 6: now they're playing not only scrappy but tough and valid.
- 25:23Speaker 6: The scoreboard normally doesn't show because the offense is behind.
- 25:25Speaker 6: They don't really have a lot of pieces. And they're
- 25:28Speaker 6: deficient in a lot of areas. Nevertheless, man, when he
- 25:33Speaker 6: took the job as head coach of the Miami Dolphins,
- 25:35Speaker 6: he said he wasn't worried about the naysayers. He wasn't
- 25:39Speaker 6: worried about everybody talking about what they didn't have. They
- 25:42Speaker 6: just wanted to focus on what they do have. And
- 25:44Speaker 6: what they do have is Malik Willis, that quarterback who
- 25:46Speaker 6: they brought in from the Green Bay Packers, who they
- 25:49Speaker 6: feel has the ability to be the future for them.
- 25:52Speaker 6: They feel like they have an offensive line that's starting
- 25:54Speaker 6: to grow. They have Caden Proctor, who they brought in
- 25:56Speaker 6: from Alabama.
- 25:57Speaker 3: The big fella can move.
- 25:59Speaker 6: He's playing left tackle for them. And overall, man, they'll
- 26:02Speaker 6: continue to make way with what they have. Defensively, I
- 26:05Speaker 6: talked about Jacob Rodriguez, the linebacker they drafted out of
- 26:09Speaker 6: Texas Tech.
- 26:10Speaker 3: He had 18.
- 26:10Speaker 6: I think he had– the stat could be wrong, so
- 26:13Speaker 6: excuse me. But I think he had, damn near, 15
- 26:16Speaker 6: or 16 tackles Sunday. And their defensive line is playing better.
- 26:21Speaker 6: Charles Robinson continues to be a factor for them.
- 26:24Speaker 3: So they feel like they have a defense.
- 26:25Speaker 6: They're building– they have pieces, and there's a foundation there.
- 26:30Speaker 6: If you're the Dolphins, sure, nobody's looking for you, right?
- 26:34Speaker 6: Let's just be honest. But you have to feel optimistic
- 26:37Speaker 6: about what you have right now, especially going into this draft.
- 26:40Speaker 6: about what you can continue to build upon and hopefully
- 26:43Speaker 6: get some free agents in the building that can help
- 26:46Speaker 6: you kind of trend upwards. But nevertheless, it's always going
- 26:48Speaker 6: to be a scrap against the Bengals because we know
- 26:50Speaker 6: what the offense can do, led by Joe Burr. But
- 26:53Speaker 6: this won't be an easy game for the Bengals. I
- 26:55Speaker 6: expect this game to be a lot more tougher than expected,
- 27:00Speaker 6: especially with the injury to Jamar Chase.
- 27:02Speaker 2: Yeah, Rodriguez, by the way, 14 tackles a week ago.
- 27:05Speaker 2: And so, yeah, and again, The Dolphins, you know, playing
- 27:09Speaker 2: teams a little bit better and a little bit tighter
- 27:11Speaker 2: over the last couple of weeks. Listen, love to see
- 27:14Speaker 2: them spring an upset on the Bengals. That would be fantastic. Willie,
- 27:18Speaker 2: one you're going to have a close eye on, obviously,
- 27:20Speaker 2: is the 3-1 Browns visiting the 1-3 New York Jets. And,
- 27:27Speaker 2: you know, I'm a little surprised, but the Jets are
- 27:30Speaker 2: slight favorites in this game over the Browns.
- 27:37Speaker 3: I'm sorry, Rob. Go ahead again. I apologize. You're coming
- 27:39Speaker 3: in and out.
- 27:40Speaker 2: Oh, not at all. I was just going to say,
- 27:41Speaker 2: I'm surprised as we take a look at our second
- 27:43Speaker 2: AFC North matchup with the Browns on the road at
- 27:46Speaker 2: the Jets that the Jets are slight favorites over the Browns.
- 27:50Speaker 3: Man, it's... This game is for the Jets. This is...
- 27:58Speaker 3: This is a big game.
- 27:59Speaker 6: And I don't know how to... I'm trying to be...
- 28:00Speaker 6: I'm trying to compact this a little bit. This is
- 28:03Speaker 6: a big game for the organization.
- 28:05Speaker 2: Um.
- 28:06Speaker 6: Up until the game against the Bears, the team, the
- 28:09Speaker 6: front office, and everybody felt like, yeah, the Jets may
- 28:13Speaker 6: have lost some games against the Packers and obviously the
- 28:17Speaker 6: Bears and in Detroit. But there was a consensus coming
- 28:20Speaker 6: out of the Detroit game that they were the type
- 28:22Speaker 6: of team that was trending in the right direction. They
- 28:25Speaker 6: were able to take the Packers into overtime. They lost
- 28:29Speaker 6: that one, unfortunately. They go on the road to Detroit.
- 28:32Speaker 6: They hold up strong, actually get back in that game
- 28:35Speaker 6: and rally strong in the fourth quarter. They end up
- 28:37Speaker 6: losing that game, too. There's a better offense in the
- 28:40Speaker 6: Detroit Lions. And then they go to Buffalo, and they
- 28:44Speaker 6: get absolutely floored.
- 28:46Speaker 3: I mean, they get run over. They get beat up.
- 28:49Speaker 6: It was an ugly game. It was probably one of
- 28:51Speaker 6: the worst games, historically, the Jets have ever played, I think,
- 28:55Speaker 6: in NFL history. It was really, really bad. So you
- 28:58Speaker 6: talk about all the optimism they walked into that Chicago
- 29:02Speaker 6: game with.
- 29:03Speaker 3: People are now.
- 29:04Speaker 6: Questioning what this team is, who are they, what they
- 29:07Speaker 6: can do. And even if Aaron Glenn is capable of
- 29:11Speaker 6: being the head coach for the New York Jets next year.
- 29:13Speaker 6: So going into the game against the Browns, people want
- 29:17Speaker 6: to see how this team will respond. Because one of
- 29:19Speaker 6: the things the Jets did in the offseason was bring
- 29:21Speaker 6: in a lot of veteran leadership led by Demario Davis.
- 29:25Speaker 6: You're talking about Minkah Fitzpatrick, X Steeler. Joseph Asai, who
- 29:30Speaker 6: once was a Bengals, who's now playing for the Jets.
- 29:32Speaker 6: They brought in a lot of veteran leadership, and they
- 29:34Speaker 6: wanted to see this veteran group kind of help stabilize
- 29:38Speaker 6: this young locker room because it's just, dude, still have
- 29:40Speaker 6: a young locker room. But there's now at the point
- 29:42Speaker 6: where we talk, you know, we like to throw out
- 29:44Speaker 6: the word middle class. They have a lot of the
- 29:46Speaker 6: nucleus of the Jets is the middle class. A lot
- 29:49Speaker 6: of guys who have played three to four or five
- 29:50Speaker 6: years who are kind of moving into the prime of
- 29:53Speaker 6: their career. They have a lot of guys who are
- 29:55Speaker 6: a little bit on the back nine of their career
- 29:56Speaker 6: but still can play at a high level like a
- 29:58Speaker 6: DeMario Davis. And so there's a lot of eyes on
- 30:03Speaker 6: this game. People know who the Browns are. They put
- 30:05Speaker 6: up a great fight, a great show on Thursday night.
- 30:07Speaker 6: This isn't about the Browns. This is about the Jets
- 30:10Speaker 6: and how they respond to the Browns because we know
- 30:13Speaker 6: what the Browns can do.
- 30:13Speaker 3: We know how they're built.
- 30:15Speaker 6: But there's a lot of questions going into this game
- 30:18Speaker 6: and a lot of people looking for answers because if
- 30:20Speaker 6: the Jets look anything like they look like or played
- 30:24Speaker 6: anything like the way they played against Chicago, man, heads
- 30:26Speaker 6: will roll. It was not a good game for the
- 30:28Speaker 6: New York Jets. It was a regression, and it was
- 30:32Speaker 6: honestly sad to see because I think a lot of
- 30:34Speaker 6: people were looking at this Jets team and saying, hey, yeah,
- 30:39Speaker 6: this is what their record is, but this is not
- 30:41Speaker 6: how they're playing. Well, they went into Chicago, and they
- 30:44Speaker 6: were erased off the field, so this is going to
- 30:46Speaker 6: be an intense one for the Jets.
- 30:48Speaker 2: Yeah, and there was no Caleb Williams in that game.
- 30:51Speaker 2: You know, look, so the total yardage was 492 to 157.
- 30:54Speaker 2: That is super lopsided, but We mentioned this earlier in
- 30:59Speaker 2: the week, Willie. I don't know if I can ever
- 31:02Speaker 2: remember seeing a game, and I'm sure it's happened. Some
- 31:07Speaker 2: of these stats are being parsed up more, so snap
- 31:10Speaker 2: count is one of these things that people talk about.
- 31:12Speaker 2: How are the players getting a snap count? What are
- 31:14Speaker 2: the team snap counts? How many plays are you running?
- 31:16Speaker 2: That sort of stuff. The Bears ran 89 plays, and
- 31:22Speaker 2: the Jets ran 32. I can't ever remember. I'm sure
- 31:27Speaker 2: it's happened. It's not a stat I've kept that close
- 31:31Speaker 2: to track of until recently, but that is just, whoa, man.
- 31:35Speaker 2: That is a beatdown.
- 31:38Speaker 6: They went 0-7 on third down and couldn't run the ball.
- 31:41Speaker 3: They didn't have Brees Hall.
- 31:44Speaker 6: They did have Garrett Wilson and Kenyon Sadiq, who looks
- 31:47Speaker 6: to be a superstar, a future superstar in the league,
- 31:52Speaker 6: and for the New York Jets. Just overall, defensively, they just,
- 31:54Speaker 6: I mean, it was bad. They owned them in the
- 31:57Speaker 6: town possession. It was bad from the first quarter to
- 32:00Speaker 6: the fourth quarter, and it's nothing to Jets. They just
- 32:03Speaker 6: look like the varsity playing the freshman team.
- 32:08Speaker 3: It was just rough. It was just a bad day
- 32:10Speaker 3: for the Jets overall.
- 32:12Speaker 2: Max, any thoughts on that Browns-Jets game?
- 32:15Speaker 5: Listen, can they just show something? I think that's the
- 32:21Speaker 5: biggest thing, Will, and I know it's tough when you're thinking.
- 32:24Speaker 2: About your guys and and what all they have.
- 32:29Speaker 5: To prove, and you have to look at year two
- 32:34Speaker 5: of Aaron Glenn.
- 32:35Speaker 7: Is this the right project? Is this the right experiment?
- 32:37Speaker 5: But I think also not having Brees Hall once again,
- 32:39Speaker 5: I think already puts kind of you guys in a
- 32:42Speaker 5: position where you're turning to other options. How good can
- 32:47Speaker 5: Garrett Wilson be, and how good can he be that guy?
- 32:51Speaker 2: But you're right.
- 32:51Speaker 5: Kenyon Sadiq, Mason Taylor, you're now dealing with a team
- 32:55Speaker 5: that has– all of the tight end properties to be good,
- 33:00Speaker 5: but you need that field stretcher to be competent and
- 33:04Speaker 5: be a guy who can help take some of that
- 33:07Speaker 5: relief off of the intermediate game so you have more options.
- 33:10Speaker 5: And I think, you know, with this Cleveland team, the
- 33:12Speaker 5: way that they blitz, I think is what the biggest
- 33:15Speaker 5: issue is going to be, right, is how do you
- 33:17Speaker 5: protect against a team that can play man and can
- 33:21Speaker 5: send four and five, and can the offensive line really
- 33:23Speaker 5: hold up to what they're doing in this game? Because
- 33:27Speaker 5: we just saw it on Thursday night, and now they've
- 33:28Speaker 5: had nine days to kind of chew on it and
- 33:31Speaker 5: get even healthier before this game. So I think it's
- 33:35Speaker 5: tough sledding for the Jets and for the Browns who
- 33:40Speaker 5: finish fourth. You know, they're getting a complimentary schedule that's
- 33:43Speaker 5: going to help them kind of ease them into the
- 33:45Speaker 5: rest of the season.
- 33:46Speaker 2: Well, when you think about, look, we know how, Fans go, right?
- 33:49Speaker 2: So the minute the Steelers beat the Bengals, now everyone's posting, hey,
- 33:54Speaker 2: look at all the injuries that have happened to the
- 33:56Speaker 2: other teams. Look at the quarterbacks the Steelers are facing
- 33:58Speaker 2: over the next four or five weeks and, you know, blah, blah.
- 34:02Speaker 2: We always do that as fans, right? Hey, look at this.
- 34:03Speaker 2: You're always looking at things through, you know, if you're
- 34:06Speaker 2: a Steelers fan, black and gold colored glasses. If you're
- 34:09Speaker 2: a Cleveland Browns fan, what are they, brown and orange?
- 34:12Speaker 2: I don't even know what those colors are.
- 34:14Speaker 7: Yeah, brown and orange.
- 34:15Speaker 2: Brown and orange colored glasses. So if you're them, you're thinking, okay, look,
- 34:20Speaker 2: we got smoked by Jacksonville week one. I get it.
- 34:23Speaker 2: But Deshaun Watson's playing better. You beat Tampa Bay. Okay,
- 34:26Speaker 2: they were kind of a middle-class team. You beat Carolina. Okay,
- 34:30Speaker 2: they're kind of a middle-class team. You beat the Steelers
- 34:32Speaker 2: at home. That's always a big victory. You had the Jets. Boy,
- 34:36Speaker 2: you'd love to be 4-1 against the Jets coming home
- 34:39Speaker 2: to face Baltimore with Tennessee on the horizon. You know
- 34:42Speaker 2: that's what fans are thinking right now, right? So... The
- 34:46Speaker 2: team better not think that because Willie, you think the
- 34:49Speaker 2: Jets might give him some trouble this week. And Willie's
- 34:53Speaker 2: not alone. They're favored. The Jets are favored in this game.
- 34:55Speaker 2: I know they're at home, but I have to say
- 34:57Speaker 2: that kind of surprises me a little bit. Not that
- 35:00Speaker 2: I pay much attention to that. That just means what
- 35:03Speaker 2: people think about it, you know?
- 35:05Speaker 6: Well, I think one– a couple things. One– I think
- 35:09Speaker 6: the books expect the jets to play the Browns. I
- 35:11Speaker 6: guess it's a super bowl because of what they did
- 35:13Speaker 6: in Chicago too. It's supposed to be really bad weather.
- 35:16Speaker 2: In New York.
- 35:17Speaker 3: It's supposed to be rainy and messy.
- 35:19Speaker 6: Um, and three on top of that, you know, the
- 35:23Speaker 6: jets right now, when you talk about what they do
- 35:26Speaker 6: really well, well, it's the ability to.
- 35:28Speaker 3: Run the ball. Yeah.
- 35:29Speaker 6: They, I mean, they were stagnant against the bears, but
- 35:31Speaker 6: the expectation is what the two running backs to have
- 35:34Speaker 6: and Breland Allen and Isaiah Davis, uh, that they can make, Hey, um,
- 35:38Speaker 6: And I think they just feel like, listen, if the
- 35:41Speaker 6: Jets don't do anything, it may be over for them.
- 35:45Speaker 6: And so this is a situation where I think the
- 35:47Speaker 6: books know that the Jets are going to probably come
- 35:49Speaker 6: out and have to, without a doubt, put their best
- 35:52Speaker 6: foot forward.
- 35:53Speaker 2: So the last game is the Ravens, and they're at
- 35:57Speaker 2: Atlanta on Sunday night. Atlanta looks completely different with Michael
- 36:02Speaker 2: Penix on board, Max, and also– It looks like Lamar
- 36:08Speaker 2: Jackson is probably not going to play. Trending in the
- 36:12Speaker 2: direction of not playing. Those factors have Atlanta and Atlanta
- 36:16Speaker 2: being at home and they're playing better, a three-point favorite
- 36:18Speaker 2: in the game. And then, you know, this is an
- 36:21Speaker 2: interesting stretch for the Ravens because back-to-back AFC North games
- 36:26Speaker 2: at Cleveland, home against Cincinnati. Then you're at Buffalo, and
- 36:30Speaker 2: then you're taking on Jacksonville on Sunday night. So you're
- 36:33Speaker 2: 3-1 heading into this very interesting stretch of of five
- 36:37Speaker 2: games and probably, you know, they, they, they would, you know,
- 36:44Speaker 2: this is a big game for them, but they, they,
- 36:46Speaker 2: you know, I think Ravens fans would probably without Lamar
- 36:49Speaker 2: for at least a week, probably be happy to go
- 36:52Speaker 2: three and two in that five game stretch. And, and
- 36:55Speaker 2: a victory over the Falcons would go a long way
- 36:58Speaker 2: to doing that for them.
- 37:00Speaker 5: It, it, it absolutely would. Especially when you see how,
- 37:04Speaker 5: they're playing right now, right? I mean, I think that's
- 37:06Speaker 5: the other thing that you look at and you say, man,
- 37:08Speaker 5: this Atlanta team, you know, we're feeling very, very good
- 37:11Speaker 5: that we got them week one, right? Because then it
- 37:14Speaker 5: looks like a better victory later in the year because
- 37:18Speaker 5: of the fact that we've just had, you know, kind
- 37:22Speaker 5: of some mediocre play at times and we're kind of
- 37:24Speaker 5: up and down. So it's like, well, when all things
- 37:26Speaker 5: are equal, we'd rather have gotten this team. So if
- 37:29Speaker 5: you can get advantage of taking it on a team
- 37:32Speaker 5: full strength like that, that, that, that's, that's an even
- 37:34Speaker 5: better look. But I think, you know, this Falcon squad has,
- 37:38Speaker 5: has the weapons. We knew they had the weapons coming
- 37:40Speaker 5: into this game. They just didn't show them against us
- 37:42Speaker 5: because he had a third string quarterback that's trying to
- 37:44Speaker 5: figure out his way and trying to figure out, you know, what, what,
- 37:47Speaker 5: what the offense is because you find out that Tua
- 37:50Speaker 5: can't go.
- 37:50Speaker 7: And then, and then, you know, he's having back spasms.
- 37:54Speaker 7: Like there was so many things.
- 37:55Speaker 5: And now that kind of all things are equal and
- 37:56Speaker 5: they're kind of getting their footing in the NFC South,
- 37:58Speaker 5: that's very winnable.
- 38:00Speaker 7: You're like, okay, This is a big game.
- 38:03Speaker 5: So I would love to see how this plays out
- 38:07Speaker 5: on Sunday, but I think you're right.
- 38:08Speaker 7: It's going to be one that's going to be fun
- 38:09Speaker 7: to watch.
- 38:12Speaker 2: The Ravens are interesting to me also, Willie, because they're
- 38:16Speaker 2: 20th in the league in allowing 24 points per game. Yeah,
- 38:20Speaker 2: they beat the Colts, who the Steelers are going to see,
- 38:22Speaker 2: in Indy in Week 1. They lost to New Orleans.
- 38:26Speaker 2: They beat Dallas in a shootout 34-31. They beat Tennessee,
- 38:32Speaker 2: but it wasn't overly convincing. I mean, it was a
- 38:35Speaker 2: solid victory, and you lost Lamar in that game, so
- 38:37Speaker 2: I understand why maybe you played things close to the
- 38:40Speaker 2: vest a little bit, but I'm not sure where the
- 38:42Speaker 2: Ravens are right now as a team, and I'm sure
- 38:45Speaker 2: that they're trying to figure out where they are as well.
- 38:47Speaker 6: Well, they're struggling to get off the field on third down, honestly,
- 38:51Speaker 6: and the pass rush for them right now hasn't been awful,
- 38:54Speaker 6: but it's just been stagnant at times, and I think
- 38:56Speaker 6: there's an impression that, you know, that they want to
- 39:00Speaker 6: get back to being the defense where they not only
- 39:03Speaker 6: play complimentary football, but they want to get back to
- 39:06Speaker 6: being the bullies on the block.
- 39:08Speaker 3: And I'm not sure they have that type of personnel.
- 39:13Speaker 6: Right now we talked about Kyle Hamilton kind of being
- 39:15Speaker 6: the bright spot on their defense because his ability to
- 39:17Speaker 6: play not only over the top but in the box.
- 39:21Speaker 6: He's a havoc at the line of scrimmage, so he's
- 39:23Speaker 6: been able to have an impact in that regard. And
- 39:25Speaker 6: then at certain spots there, they're dealing with some injuries.
- 39:28Speaker 6: So overall, man, I think defensively, they're looking to find
- 39:35Speaker 6: their identity as well. Matt, a beak way has, you know,
- 39:38Speaker 6: he's been clear. He's been into the lineup back in
- 39:41Speaker 6: the lineup, but overall, man, it's, it's a situation where
- 39:45Speaker 6: I think they feel they are, They've got to get
- 39:47Speaker 6: healthier on that side of the ball, but they've also
- 39:50Speaker 6: got to find a way to get to the quarterback
- 39:54Speaker 6: without blitzing, and they haven't been able to do so.
- 39:57Speaker 2: Okay, so up next, that's our AFC North preview. Up next,
- 40:00Speaker 2: we are each going to pick one game that intrigues us.
- 40:04Speaker 2: We're going to let Willie go first because I think
- 40:05Speaker 2: his game and my game might be the same. You
- 40:08Speaker 2: know how I am. I'm intrigued by all the games,
- 40:11Speaker 2: as you guys let me know last week. Yes, you're
- 40:13Speaker 2: a super intriguing guy. I'll pick one. I promise I'll
- 40:16Speaker 2: only pick one. That's up next when we continue in
- 40:19Speaker 2: the locker room here on the Steelers Audio Network.
- 40:26Speaker 1: This is In the Locker Room with Rob King, Max Starks,
- 40:30Speaker 1: and Willie Colon on Steelers Nation Radio, brought to you
- 40:34Speaker 1: in part by the Steelers Pro Shop. Get it direct
- 40:37Speaker 1: from the team at the Steelers Pro Shop at shop.steelers.com.
- 40:42Speaker 1: And by your neighborhood Ford store. The F-150 is the
- 40:46Speaker 1: official truck of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
- 40:51Speaker 5: Final segment of the day, and we all know what
- 40:54Speaker 5: time it is.
- 40:55Speaker 2: Ring the trumpets. That's right.
- 41:00Speaker 5: Final segment here in the bell lap hour of our show.
- 41:06Speaker 7: And, of course, Rob, we finish off with a bang.
- 41:09Speaker 7: Had a great show. Two guests today, right?
- 41:12Speaker 6: Yes, sir.
- 41:13Speaker 5: Very big moment for us here, a double-segmented day with guests.
- 41:19Speaker 5: Talking about and previewing this Colts game we're going to
- 41:21Speaker 5: have this weekend. So excited about it. And, of course,
- 41:24Speaker 5: we'll get into the rest of our previews. Now I
- 41:28Speaker 5: turn it over to you, Rob.
- 41:29Speaker 2: Yeah, so we are looking at the games that intrigue
- 41:35Speaker 2: us most over the course of the weekend. What are
- 41:37Speaker 2: the games? And we each only get to choose one. Luckily,
- 41:41Speaker 2: my list is only six games long, this guy, not
- 41:44Speaker 2: including this team. Oh, that's good. Well, that's because there's
- 41:46Speaker 2: bye weeks, Rob. I've got room to take whatever you
- 41:49Speaker 2: guys don't want to take. So, Willie, we are going
- 41:52Speaker 2: to start with you. What game intrigues you the most
- 41:56Speaker 2: this weekend and why?
- 42:00Speaker 3: Well, I'm a stake assistant. I'm a stake assistant, and
- 42:03Speaker 3: I'm going to be honest. It is the Raiders and Patriots. Yeah.
- 42:07Speaker 2: I knew it.
- 42:08Speaker 3: I knew it. I knew it.
- 42:12Speaker 7: Can't let it go.
- 42:13Speaker 2: Can't let it go.
- 42:14Speaker 3: Yep. Well, I can't, man, because there was a.
- 42:19Speaker 6: Legit optimism that the Raiders were going to come back
- 42:22Speaker 6: and beat the Chiefs in that game. Obviously, it didn't happen,
- 42:24Speaker 6: but you still have to be– we don't like to
- 42:25Speaker 6: stack or count moral victories, but this was a moral
- 42:28Speaker 6: victory for the Raiders considering they were a team at
- 42:31Speaker 6: the beginning of the season where people were like, hey,
- 42:35Speaker 6: When is Mendoza going to play? How early does he play?
- 42:37Speaker 6: What do they look like? Nobody gave this team a chance,
- 42:40Speaker 6: and now we're saying, man, this is a whole different
- 42:43Speaker 6: narrative about this team because of the play of Kirk
- 42:45Speaker 6: Cousins and Clint Kubiak and how the defense is starting
- 42:47Speaker 6: to respond and how some of their depth, and that's
- 42:50Speaker 6: what's not talked about this team at all, their depth
- 42:53Speaker 6: has been good. Their depth has been able to step
- 42:56Speaker 6: up and fill holes and play well.
- 42:58Speaker 3: So now you're going.
- 42:59Speaker 6: Against a Patriots team who battled in the first half
- 43:02Speaker 6: Didn't play well, but Drake may wield that team to
- 43:05Speaker 6: victory against the Bills. And so we're looking at two
- 43:10Speaker 6: AFC teams that may be in the playoffs, two quarterbacks
- 43:13Speaker 6: that may be seeing each other in the playoffs.
- 43:15Speaker 3: So I'm just interested.
- 43:17Speaker 6: I think it just makes for, we always like to say,
- 43:19Speaker 6: styles make fights, man.
- 43:20Speaker 3: This should be a good fight.
- 43:22Speaker 2: And I got to tell you, every year there is,
- 43:24Speaker 2: last year, the Patriots were interesting, the Jaguars were interesting,
- 43:29Speaker 2: the Bears were interesting. New blood is always interesting. By
- 43:33Speaker 2: the way, I think it's one of the things that
- 43:34Speaker 2: works against the Steelers on a national stage is that it's,
- 43:38Speaker 2: you know, they're not the new blood. They've been around
- 43:40Speaker 2: for a while and that sort of thing. So I
- 43:43Speaker 2: do think that, you know, are the Raiders, who are
- 43:46Speaker 2: this year's teams that are going to emerge? Because two
- 43:49Speaker 2: or three teams will emerge. It happens every single year.
- 43:52Speaker 2: You can pretty much bet on it. And not that
- 43:55Speaker 2: I condone gambling, but you can pretty much say, hey,
- 43:58Speaker 2: there's going to be some teams that emerge. Willie, you
- 44:03Speaker 2: got me really interested in the Raiders.
- 44:07Speaker 3: I'm telling you, Rob, get your popcorn ready. It's going
- 44:09Speaker 3: to be the show.
- 44:12Speaker 2: All right, Max, you're up. You're going to have your
- 44:14Speaker 2: number two.
- 44:16Speaker 5: You know what I'm going to go with? I'm going
- 44:18Speaker 5: to go with the Texans and the Titans. And I
- 44:23Speaker 5: say that because we're finally going to get a victory
- 44:29Speaker 5: for it.
- 44:30Speaker 2: I got six games on my list.
- 44:32Speaker 3: That's because you got six games.
- 44:34Speaker 7: I had to pick one that you weren't going to use.
- 44:36Speaker 2: Well, you had five others you could have taken.
- 44:39Speaker 3: You picked the Bumble.
- 44:41Speaker 2: Wow.
- 44:43Speaker 5: But my thing is, you always want to see what's
- 44:46Speaker 5: the catalyst for a team and what it could do.
- 44:49Speaker 5: getting a victory and how that can springboard the rest
- 44:52Speaker 5: of the season.
- 44:52Speaker 7: So, I mean, yes. Is it, is it not the sexes?
- 44:54Speaker 6: Yes.
- 44:55Speaker 5: We can go pick a Kansas city chiefs team, or
- 44:57Speaker 5: you can pick one of these top targets and say,
- 45:00Speaker 5: Oh yeah, the Eagles game. But I want to see,
- 45:02Speaker 5: you know, I like seeing these teams because I think
- 45:04Speaker 5: sometimes these are the springboards that they need to be successful.
- 45:07Speaker 5: And I want to see if they're actually going to respond.
- 45:10Speaker 5: So that's why I picked that game.
- 45:11Speaker 2: It's my game.
- 45:12Speaker 7: Let me pick my game.
- 45:13Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 45:13Speaker 2: Willie. I think I, I understand where Max is coming
- 45:17Speaker 2: from and, There are probably only about 14 or 15
- 45:21Speaker 2: other games I'm more interested in watching.
- 45:24Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 45:24Speaker 2: Well, first let me say this.
- 45:26Speaker 3: I apologize.
- 45:27Speaker 7: I don't think you can.
- 45:28Speaker 2: Have 15 other games.
- 45:28Speaker 3: I apologize on behalf of Max.
- 45:30Speaker 2: Thank you, Willie. All right. I didn't hear what Willie
- 45:32Speaker 2: was saying. I didn't hear what Max was saying. So
- 45:34Speaker 2: I will say this. From a professional standpoint, like my job,
- 45:39Speaker 2: I would watch that game because they're both opponents of
- 45:41Speaker 2: the Steelers coming up. So I would watch that game.
- 45:44Speaker 2: If I was at home and it was on, I'd
- 45:46Speaker 2: turn it on. Um, I'm not going to be home
- 45:49Speaker 2: and I'm not going to tape it. I'll watch him.
- 45:50Speaker 2: I'll watch him. We're getting ready to play him. Um,
- 45:53Speaker 2: so man, oh man.
- 45:55Speaker 3: So, uh, okay.
- 45:56Speaker 2: I'm going to sort of run down the games that
- 45:57Speaker 2: I'm not going to pick.
- 45:58Speaker 3: All right. Can I do that?
- 46:00Speaker 2: Am I allowed to do that? Run down the games.
- 46:02Speaker 2: I'm not going to name my game. I'm not going
- 46:04Speaker 2: to pick the bears and Packers. Although I find that
- 46:06Speaker 2: to be an interesting game. Um, I am not going
- 46:10Speaker 2: to pick the, uh, I'm not going to pick the
- 46:14Speaker 2: Ravens and Falcons, even though I think that's an interesting game.
- 46:17Speaker 2: I'm not going to pick the Bills and Rams on
- 46:20Speaker 2: Monday night, although I think that's also going to be
- 46:22Speaker 2: an interesting game. I am going to pick the 49ers
- 46:26Speaker 2: at 4-0, visiting the 3-1 Seattle Seahawks. It's the game
- 46:32Speaker 2: of the week, guys. Come on, seriously.
- 46:34Speaker 3: That's a really good game. That's a heavyweight fight.
- 46:37Speaker 2: Okay, that's the– I mean, I am taking– the chalk here, right?
- 46:42Speaker 2: I am taking the favorite, but that is I will
- 46:46Speaker 2: be getting home quickly, of course, obeying the speed limits
- 46:49Speaker 2: at all times to see as much of that game
- 46:51Speaker 2: as I possibly can on Sunday.
- 46:55Speaker 7: No, that'll be a good one.
- 46:56Speaker 2: No disagreement. Like that game doesn't need my, as Mike
- 46:59Speaker 2: Tomlin would say, that game needs no endorsement from me.
- 47:02Speaker 3: Or from anybody else.
- 47:04Speaker 6: If you're a fan of the league, you understand the importance,
- 47:07Speaker 6: not only of the division game, but two teams right now.
- 47:10Speaker 6: who are playing at a high level and talking about
- 47:12Speaker 6: Brock Purdy in that office and line who are absolutely
- 47:15Speaker 6: killing it. The emergence of George Kittle and Kyle Shanahan.
- 47:20Speaker 6: I mean, everything's working for the Niners right now. So,
- 47:24Speaker 6: Seattle continues to do Seattle type things. And so, yeah,
- 47:27Speaker 6: this is, this is the main event.
- 47:30Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 47:30Speaker 2: I think, you know, there's always, there's always a reason
- 47:33Speaker 2: to turn on a game, like even Sunday morning. I
- 47:36Speaker 2: won't be able to see that either. Cause I'll be
- 47:37Speaker 2: down at the stadium getting ready for the game. Like,
- 47:40Speaker 2: how are the Eagles going to respond to the news
- 47:41Speaker 2: that Lane Johnson retired and you just traded your two-time
- 47:44Speaker 2: Pro Bowl center to the Baltimore Ravens? Like, you know,
- 47:49Speaker 2: that interests me from afar, but that's a box score
- 47:52Speaker 2: interest to me. I'll look at the box score in
- 47:54Speaker 2: that one and be like, okay, what happened? Because I'm
- 47:56Speaker 2: really high on the Jaguars, and I think the Eagles
- 47:59Speaker 2: are really, really in an interesting spot after the moves
- 48:02Speaker 2: they just made.
- 48:05Speaker 6: Yeah, I don't know if they're in an interesting spot.
- 48:08Speaker 3: I think they're desperate, but.
- 48:10Speaker 6: I think there, if anything, this is an offense that
- 48:14Speaker 6: really needs some retooling, and there's a lot of distractions.
- 48:17Speaker 6: Not distractions, though. Let me be fair when I say this.
- 48:20Speaker 6: There's a lot of things that they're going through internally
- 48:23Speaker 6: that I think is affecting their product. And so if
- 48:27Speaker 6: you're the Eagles right now, you know right now you're
- 48:30Speaker 6: still struggling to get to the quarterback with your rush.
- 48:32Speaker 6: You have some guys playing out of position. And offensively,
- 48:35Speaker 6: you know, when you lose Saquon Barkley, and it was
- 48:38Speaker 6: a lot put on Tank Bisbee to kind of be
- 48:40Speaker 6: the stabilizer for that offense, and he did a fair
- 48:43Speaker 6: enough job. They just got to be more efficient between
- 48:46Speaker 6: the 20s, man. So much of their scoring happened last
- 48:50Speaker 6: week because the defense was able to get the ball,
- 48:53Speaker 6: turn over the ball, and get the offense back the
- 48:55Speaker 6: ball on short field. So we have to see Jalen
- 48:58Speaker 6: Hurst just play a lot better. I thought the game–
- 49:02Speaker 6: prior to this one, he looked frustrated. He was pressing,
- 49:05Speaker 6: trying to fit the ball into tight windows in the
- 49:08Speaker 6: middle of the field, and he didn't seem comfortable. And
- 49:10Speaker 6: I think he's been back-to-back weeks where he's looked frustrated.
- 49:13Speaker 6: And it's up to Nick Sirianni and Sean Manning, the
- 49:16Speaker 6: offensive coordinator, to really figure out what works best for
- 49:19Speaker 6: this offense right now. now, because you talk about the
- 49:21Speaker 6: injuries that's kind of depleted his team. No Goddard, no
- 49:23Speaker 6: Devontae Smith, Lane Johnson is no longer, it looks like
- 49:27Speaker 6: he's hanging it up. Cam Juergens is now with the Ravens.
- 49:31Speaker 6: Saquon being hurt. His team is dealing with a lot
- 49:34Speaker 6: in real time, so It's up to Nick Ceriani and
