Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: So to the White House we go. This is sitting
- 0:02Speaker 1: on the sofa Zelensky and Trump to get so far,
- 0:05Speaker 1: all smiles, no shouting. Trump sees he will call Puttin
- 0:08Speaker 1: after the meeting. The European leaders will join later joining us.
- 0:12Speaker 1: Nick harp A ficture story news correspondent in Washington, Good morning, Good.
- 0:17Speaker 2: Morning, Ryan.
- 0:17Speaker 1: So what's so far so good?
- 0:20Speaker 2: Well, yeah, so far so good. I mean, the wheels
- 0:22Speaker 2: didn't come off in the way they certainly did in
- 0:23Speaker 2: that February meeting where they were shouting at each other
- 0:26Speaker 2: where the Ukrainian delegation was ejected from the White House early.
- 0:30Speaker 2: They managed to get through that meeting in Theory. They
- 0:33Speaker 2: go behind closed doors. There could be some tension there,
- 0:37Speaker 2: but so far it all seems to be going quite well.
- 0:40Speaker 1: What's he said about if they mentioned territory? Have they
- 0:43Speaker 1: mentioned another meeting?
- 0:45Speaker 2: Well, I think that is what's going to get hashed
- 0:47Speaker 2: out later on, first of all between Donald Trump and
- 0:50Speaker 2: President Zelenski, and then that multilateral meeting in Theory in
- 0:54Speaker 2: about an hour and ten minutes time with the Europeans.
- 0:57Speaker 2: At one point, Zelenski was asked to readily in the
- 0:59Speaker 2: Oval Office just a moment ago by a reporter, are
- 1:02Speaker 2: you going to redraw the map? He dodged that question.
- 1:06Speaker 2: He said, we need to stop the war instead, and
- 1:07Speaker 2: he said he hoped that American and EU partners could
- 1:10Speaker 2: help with that. But I think territory is going to
- 1:12Speaker 2: be a very important part of today. Donald Trump now
- 1:15Speaker 2: seems to be pushing President Putin's idea that Ukraine, as
- 1:19Speaker 2: well as giving up Crimea that was annexed back in
- 1:22Speaker 2: twenty fourteen by Moscow, also gives up the entirety of
- 1:26Speaker 2: the Dnetsk region, even though Russia hasn't captured all of
- 1:31Speaker 2: that during this three and a half year conflict.
- 1:33Speaker 1: What about a security guarantee from America? Did Trump give
- 1:36Speaker 1: an any hence.
- 1:39Speaker 2: Yeah, this is a big one. Because Ukraine wants to
- 1:42Speaker 2: join NATO. Trump and Putin say quite simply he can't.
- 1:45Speaker 2: That's not something that's going to happen. But there is
- 1:48Speaker 2: this suggestion, both from Donald Trump and the Europeans that
- 1:51Speaker 2: he might get security guarantees like the same thing that
- 1:54Speaker 2: NATO members get Article five. So if Ukraine were to
- 1:58Speaker 2: be attacked in the future, the other native members would
- 2:00Speaker 2: be standing by ready to defend. But also we heard
- 2:04Speaker 2: in that meeting just now, Donald Trump said that he
- 2:07Speaker 2: did want to be a part of future security guarantees.
- 2:11Speaker 2: Unclear what that might mean, would the US troops stationed
- 2:14Speaker 2: in Ukraine, for example. So far obviously that is a
- 2:17Speaker 2: redline for President Putin, but Donald Trump saying that he
- 2:20Speaker 2: wants to be involved. I guess that's another thing they're
- 2:22Speaker 2: just going to have to hash out today.
- 2:24Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely all right, Nick, We'll wait and saying Nick Harp,
- 2:27Speaker 1: a Future Story news correspondent in Washington for US This Morning.
