Latest / Inside the Birds: A Philadelphia Eagles Podcast / ITB Contract Series: Can The Eagles Really Have Two Of The NFL's Highest Paid DTs?
Transcript
- 0:09Speaker 1: Inside the Birds is back. What's going on everybody? It's
- 0:15Speaker 1: Jeff Mosher and Adam Kaplan. We start a new week
- 0:18Speaker 1: in June. The Eagles are gone for several weeks, so
- 0:22Speaker 1: that leads us back to our podcast series about Eagles
- 0:26Speaker 1: contracts that we started last week. And what we did
- 0:29Speaker 1: was we started with the offense, broke it down to position,
- 0:32Speaker 1: and went through the major contracts at each position to see,
- 0:36Speaker 1: as we do this every year, we see what these
- 0:38Speaker 1: contracts mean for the players twenty twenty sixth season and
- 0:43Speaker 1: also for the future. Now, Adam, when we did offense,
- 0:46Speaker 1: the real standout ones we're talking about guys really third
- 0:50Speaker 1: contract guys like what Hurts has to do this year
- 0:53Speaker 1: to get to get a third an extension on his
- 0:56Speaker 1: second same thing with DeVante Smith we talked about should
- 0:59Speaker 1: get one immediately, say Kwon Barkley. As we transition to
- 1:02Speaker 1: defense and we start with this show will be about
- 1:05Speaker 1: interior defensive line, but most a lot of our conversations
- 1:09Speaker 1: are gonna be the opposite. They're gonna be about not
- 1:12Speaker 1: necessarily prove it guys, but guys who have been proven
- 1:14Speaker 1: it in their rookie deals and are need are gonna
- 1:17Speaker 1: get paid pretty soon, you know, within the next from
- 1:21Speaker 1: now till next year, and the Eagles are gonna have
- 1:24Speaker 1: to make some really tough decisions. I said this in
- 1:27Speaker 1: a recent pod. There's gonna be an unpopular decision that
- 1:30Speaker 1: has to be made because they have just way too
- 1:32Speaker 1: much good young defensive talent to keep it all.
- 1:35Speaker 2: Yeah. Frank brought that up in our Patreon livestream on Wednesday, yep,
- 1:40Speaker 2: and he said, you know, Jeff had that point about
- 1:43Speaker 2: you can't sign everybody. There's been like, you know, it's
- 1:45Speaker 2: a good problem to have. How he's mastered the draft
- 1:47Speaker 2: in recent years and they have and then plus with
- 1:50Speaker 2: the Zach Bonfin came out of nowhere who signed to
- 1:54Speaker 2: be a backup and who knew would be a stud,
- 1:56Speaker 2: but he is, and he keeps mastering the drafting. He's
- 1:59Speaker 2: kick answer the draft for the most part, and free agency,
- 2:04Speaker 2: trade all that stuff. So at some point you can't
- 2:08Speaker 2: pay everybody. There was a salary cap. There's also a
- 2:10Speaker 2: cash bend, which we've been talking about now for three years.
- 2:12Speaker 2: The Eagles are not spending as much, or at least
- 2:15Speaker 2: they're trying not to spend as much in cash. You know,
- 2:18Speaker 2: the big cash over CAF team. But at some point
- 2:22Speaker 2: your cash bend's going to come down. And they've done that,
- 2:25Speaker 2: and now you look at it, you're starting with the
- 2:28Speaker 2: interior defensive line of the d tackles or is Fandriw
- 2:32Speaker 2: calls them dts like they've got, right, Davis, the guys
- 2:36Speaker 2: contrac extended. We'll talk about that. Carter's up, they want
- 2:39Speaker 2: to get that done. Oh, Joemo's been a nice surprise.
- 2:44Speaker 2: He's quality starter. Welt Willams is a better player, but
- 2:47Speaker 2: he's a different type player. They're completely different the way
- 2:50Speaker 2: that they play. So you got those three guys. We'll
- 2:52Speaker 2: get into Byron Young Ty Robinson when we look at
- 2:54Speaker 2: their contracts. But it is fascinating because they're relatively young
- 3:00Speaker 2: and almost all the young players have shown that they
- 3:04Speaker 2: could play this league. Campbell will see. I mean he's
- 3:06Speaker 2: the first rounder, but he needs to play more, not
- 3:08Speaker 2: get hurt.
- 3:10Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, i mean they've got they got a lot
- 3:13Speaker 1: of guys, you know, and we'll start up front, like
- 3:14Speaker 1: you said, and they already have. Let's talk about Jill
- 3:17Speaker 1: and Carter because he's the one who could he's eligible
- 3:22Speaker 1: right now, being three years in to a technically five
- 3:26Speaker 1: year deal because you pick up the fifth year option
- 3:29Speaker 1: on him. He's the one that is most likely to
- 3:32Speaker 1: get an extension if it's going to happen, and it's
- 3:35Speaker 1: going to be really, really lucrative, And why don't we
- 3:39Speaker 1: look at what he's supposed to make now and kind
- 3:43Speaker 1: of figure out what that might inflate to if he
- 3:47Speaker 1: winds up getting re agreed to an extension.
- 3:50Speaker 2: Right, So he got his fifth year option, as you said,
- 3:52Speaker 2: for this season. Okay, this season, which is year number four,
- 3:57Speaker 2: he's going to make just over three point seven million.
- 4:00Speaker 2: So if you're Drew Rosenhaus's agent and your Carter, you're
- 4:02Speaker 2: not gonna want to play on this deal. It's just
- 4:04Speaker 2: you're not. So you're going to want to least get
- 4:09Speaker 2: security for the future, which makes total sense. He should
- 4:13Speaker 2: and would not surprise me if this deal gets done,
- 4:17Speaker 2: an extension gets done by the start of training camp.
- 4:19Speaker 2: You know they it's funny because Jordan Davis got his,
- 4:23Speaker 2: But they're completely different players the way that they play.
- 4:25Speaker 2: They're just complete ones with run stopper, incredible movement for
- 4:29Speaker 2: his size, and we'll get to Davis in a minute,
- 4:32Speaker 2: but Jalen Carter, it's going to be well over thirty million.
- 4:36Speaker 2: I mean it could be in the middle of it
- 4:37Speaker 2: could be thirty three to thirty five million. That's where
- 4:39Speaker 2: the money's going. Like when Lee McNeil's more of a
- 4:42Speaker 2: nose tackle, athletic nose tackle, got twenty five million a
- 4:44Speaker 2: year and the guarantee structure is great.
- 4:46Speaker 1: I couldn't believe it.
- 4:47Speaker 2: Contract the unfortunately towards ACL that was a great contract.
- 4:51Speaker 2: Heaves beat it by a little bit, but he he
- 4:53Speaker 2: did it, you know, a year later and Carter's Davis
- 4:57Speaker 2: getting twenty six million season. We'll talk later about that
- 4:59Speaker 2: structure of it. But Carter is so dominant and so talented,
- 5:04Speaker 2: yougles kind of know where this is going. I mean,
- 5:06Speaker 2: it's it's this is he's just a very unique player
- 5:11Speaker 2: and he's a guy that you know, they they got
- 5:15Speaker 2: it right to this point. By the way, fifth year
- 5:17Speaker 2: option the cat you know, the the fifth year option.
- 5:20Speaker 2: The base salary is is his cap number. It can't
- 5:24Speaker 2: be massaged. It's twenty seven point one two seven million.
- 5:28Speaker 2: It's called twenty seven point two, right, you love to
- 5:31Speaker 2: because that's the first extension. You'll love them to get
- 5:33Speaker 2: off that. No, Now, if you extend it, then you
- 5:35Speaker 2: could cut the fifth year option goes away, and you
- 5:37Speaker 2: cut the number down, right, you know, so it's you're
- 5:40Speaker 2: gonna want to You're gonna want to get that him
- 5:42Speaker 2: off that number. It's like when it to my teams,
- 5:44Speaker 2: like Eagles don't like doing tags. You can't massage a tag.
- 5:46Speaker 2: It's the number. The cash number is the cap number.
- 5:49Speaker 2: It can't be it can't be touched, right unless you extend.
- 5:52Speaker 2: So that's the way to work.
- 5:54Speaker 1: So then he's probably if he gets this contract extension,
- 5:57Speaker 1: especially if it's soon, it's probably going to be he'll
- 6:02Speaker 1: probably be the highest paid defensive tackle in the league.
- 6:04Speaker 1: I mean right now, oh history history, of course, Well
- 6:06Speaker 1: every time you were the high Yeah, it becomes that
- 6:08Speaker 1: way for five minutes, yeah, yeah, Chris Jones, Yeah, right,
- 6:11Speaker 1: for five minutes. Chris Jones is about thirty one to seven, So,
- 6:15Speaker 1: I mean you're looking at thirty somewhere between thirty two
- 6:18Speaker 1: and thirty five for sure.
- 6:19Speaker 2: Thirty one seven to five is exactly right, Chris Jones. Yeah,
- 6:22Speaker 2: And that was a It's interesting because the one before that,
- 6:27Speaker 2: if you remember, they couldn't get him done on time,
- 6:29Speaker 2: and and Jones missed the first game of the season.
- 6:31Speaker 2: I think that that one year m hm, and then
- 6:35Speaker 2: he then they finally took care of it. You know,
- 6:36Speaker 2: the chiefs are this has been going for years. They're
- 6:39Speaker 2: they're a moderate to low cash bend team. This is
- 6:42Speaker 2: just the way that they've done. Of course, then they
- 6:44Speaker 2: break the bank. They finally gave Mahomes a market deal. Finally, finally,
- 6:50Speaker 2: But getting back to detecl Yeah, Chris Jones is the
- 6:52Speaker 2: deal to be Obviously he was much older. Yep, who
- 6:55Speaker 2: turns thirty two in a couple of weeks. But yeah,
- 6:59Speaker 2: it's should go somewhere the thirty five million dollar range.
- 7:02Speaker 2: Just you got to go where the market's going. This
- 7:05Speaker 2: is where the market's going. Uh. And if for those
- 7:10Speaker 2: people think Jordan David should have got more, you got
- 7:12Speaker 2: to understand he's not a sacka He's just not a
- 7:13Speaker 2: sack production guy. Just get hurt, you just get pressures.
- 7:16Speaker 2: But he's not a sack guy. But he's a special
- 7:20Speaker 2: nose tackle. No one's really played like him, you know.
- 7:22Speaker 1: Right, He's become a very big key to their base defense.
- 7:27Speaker 1: Now he still doesn't play a ton in the nickel.
- 7:30Speaker 1: When they rush four, it's still usually Carter and more
- 7:33Speaker 1: of a Joemo more than he was though I was
- 7:36Speaker 1: about to say, but it is more than usual. And
- 7:38Speaker 1: by this time next year, depending we'll talk to a
- 7:41Speaker 1: Jomo whether he's here or not. I mean, he may
- 7:44Speaker 1: have to continue to play a bigger role in the
- 7:46Speaker 1: four man rush as an interior rusher. But if this happens, man,
- 7:50Speaker 1: you're gonna have two guys making top five DT money
- 7:54Speaker 1: and that just creates a situation where again we get
- 7:57Speaker 1: into the well, then who's not gonna get paid because
- 7:59Speaker 1: those guys are getting paid. But this is where it
- 8:02Speaker 1: starts for the Eagles defense. So this is where they prioritize.
- 8:06Speaker 1: These are two first round picks to top half of
- 8:09Speaker 1: the draft picks. And you know that Eagles are always
- 8:12Speaker 1: have always prioritized paying their interior defensive linemen. It is
- 8:15Speaker 1: their pocket push that helps the edges out quite a bit.
- 8:19Speaker 1: So that's why they are important, even if the sack
- 8:22Speaker 1: numbers aren't as big and what would happen. Let's let's
- 8:26Speaker 1: look at the alternative, because the Eagles have some leverage
- 8:29Speaker 1: and that you said that you're right that Joe and
- 8:32Speaker 1: Carter doesn't want to play this year under his number,
- 8:35Speaker 1: his current He wants to get paid, but the penalties
- 8:38Speaker 1: for holding out would be very stiff. I mean, he
- 8:40Speaker 1: would lose a lot of money, so it wouldn't make
- 8:42Speaker 1: sense for him to hold out either and start missing
- 8:46Speaker 1: time and having.
- 8:48Speaker 2: That holden is my favorite charges camp, the first one
- 8:53Speaker 2: I had ever seen Darwin James in the club. The
- 8:56Speaker 2: charges weren't. They agreed to it, so he would be
- 8:59Speaker 2: on adjacent field working out with a trainer like he
- 9:01Speaker 2: was rehabbing an injury, but they wouldn't let he wouldn't practice.
- 9:04Speaker 2: Both sides agreed that he'll continue to work out with
- 9:07Speaker 2: the trainer until he gets an extension. And he got
- 9:10Speaker 2: his first extension off his rookie contract. So the hold
- 9:13Speaker 2: ins are sort of commonplace now where, and if they're
- 9:18Speaker 2: not happy, the agent will tell the player to act
- 9:19Speaker 2: like he's sick, you know, to It's truly, it's comical,
- 9:25Speaker 2: but it does happen. The club's got Look, the Eagles
- 9:29Speaker 2: just don't have a history of not extending a guy's contract.
- 9:32Speaker 2: I remember Michael Lewis, the safety turned down their extension.
- 9:35Speaker 2: It was like you could have you could have feigned. Wait,
- 9:37Speaker 2: a player turned on an Eagles extension. Yeah, he sounded
- 9:41Speaker 2: he sounded a deal with the forty nine ers. I
- 9:43Speaker 2: did so long, a couple of decades ago. I don't
- 9:45Speaker 2: remember why he decided not to take it, but that
- 9:47Speaker 2: was a stunner.
- 9:48Speaker 1: Well it was. I remember it was below top safety
- 9:51Speaker 1: market and he was a pro bowler because he, you know,
- 9:54Speaker 1: played in that great secondary with Sheldon and Lido and
- 9:56Speaker 1: of course b Dog. And I think the Eagles were
- 9:59Speaker 1: actually proved to be right in not trying to reset
- 10:01Speaker 1: the market for him because he didn't play that long
- 10:04Speaker 1: in San Francisco. He sort of got exposed more as
- 10:07Speaker 1: a box safety in a time when things were starting
- 10:10Speaker 1: to shift to the passing game. And if I'm correct,
- 10:13Speaker 1: he did not play all that well in San Francisco
- 10:17Speaker 1: and wasn't with them for a long time.
- 10:19Speaker 2: Yeah, Michael Lewis signed a I think a six year
- 10:22Speaker 2: deal with thirty million is five million a year yep,
- 10:24Speaker 2: in O seven. It started free agency in O seven.
- 10:29Speaker 2: You might be right, I don't know what the market
- 10:31Speaker 2: so long ago, I don't know what the market was,
- 10:32Speaker 2: but I just remember, like it's just it's a situation
- 10:38Speaker 2: where the Eagles don't not get guys back on extension
- 10:41Speaker 2: when they wanted him to don't let them fool you.
- 10:43Speaker 2: They wanted him Bailey back, he said no, and it
- 10:47Speaker 2: it just did. It was just unheard about. Could you
- 10:50Speaker 2: think of anyone who turned extension off the rookie contract
- 10:54Speaker 2: here who played well that you could remember? Think of anyone, well.
- 10:58Speaker 1: I mean, I'm sure they offered Milton Williams extension, right,
- 11:01Speaker 1: he just knew he.
- 11:02Speaker 2: Was that would be with that. Well technically he did.
- 11:07Speaker 2: They they My understanding was in season they were they
- 11:10Speaker 2: were trying to get that done. Yeah, I was. I
- 11:16Speaker 2: wouldn't say, Lewis is this it's so long ago, I
- 11:19Speaker 2: don't remember. Did he flat to say I don't want
- 11:21Speaker 2: to come back. But the thing with the Williams, it's
- 11:25Speaker 2: just different is that the money they were talking was
- 11:27Speaker 2: really not what the market. My understanding was with Milton
- 11:30Speaker 2: Williams from a couple of years ago was he knew
- 11:34Speaker 2: that that market was going up and up and up,
- 11:36Speaker 2: and the Eagles they just they talked money. I don't
- 11:40Speaker 2: even know if they made an offer. I know they
- 11:42Speaker 2: talked money in season, but it never it never got
- 11:45Speaker 2: to the point where it became real and he was
- 11:47Speaker 2: smart to turn everything down and he got an absolute
- 11:51Speaker 2: monster deal. Played very well. He had a high Engle
- 11:53Speaker 2: Spring last season, but he played pretty well. I know
- 11:55Speaker 2: they're very happy with him, right, And it's just it's
- 11:58Speaker 2: as you said, it's a cause of doing like he's
- 12:01Speaker 2: signed by the way dtackle. His deal was twenty six
- 12:04Speaker 2: million and no offense to Milton Williams. He's not nearly
- 12:06Speaker 2: standin's jailing Carter, right.
- 12:08Speaker 1: This is why, Yeah, this is why this money for
- 12:10Speaker 1: Carter has got to be. It's got to be between
- 12:12Speaker 1: thirty two and thirty five.
- 12:13Speaker 2: I mean, I think out of the question, he doesn't
- 12:18Speaker 2: cause the fuss and the side shows that he used
- 12:22Speaker 2: to back fifteen twenty years ago. He's kind of changed. Yeah,
- 12:26Speaker 2: the club's luck. I could tell you talking to GM's
- 12:28Speaker 2: and contract negotiators, they love dealing with them. It's very
- 12:31Speaker 2: clear what he wants. He's very direct and they just
- 12:35Speaker 2: like dealing with them because he's a deal maker. He's
- 12:38Speaker 2: a deal maker.
- 12:39Speaker 1: Yeah. I think he also realized. I think he liked
- 12:42Speaker 1: his bad boy image early on when he was on
- 12:44Speaker 1: the cover of Sports Illustrated and driving GM's crazy. But
- 12:47Speaker 1: that started that worked against him a little bit. It
- 12:49Speaker 1: certainly didn't help him out with the Eagles and four
- 12:52Speaker 1: oh five, and then things got better. He also wound
- 12:55Speaker 1: up amassing a really good client tele and making a
- 12:58Speaker 1: lot of money, So I'm sure that that aid it
- 13:00Speaker 1: in as well. But yeah, but getting back, so getting
- 13:03Speaker 1: back to the Eagles and their defensive front, those two
- 13:06Speaker 1: guys top five market money. Hold in is a good
- 13:09Speaker 1: point because you may and I'm just listen, We're just
- 13:13Speaker 1: we're just telling you what we saw and our experience.
- 13:17Speaker 1: He obviously in mandatory camp, was there, but when they
- 13:20Speaker 1: went to team drills, I believe you did not participate, right,
- 13:23Speaker 1: you watched that he did not participate.
- 13:24Speaker 2: Yeah, now I understand he's coming after with two bad shoulders,
- 13:27Speaker 2: Like why would you expose him to any not that
- 13:30Speaker 2: you're in OTAs, which I call flag football. There's like
- 13:33Speaker 2: no physical contact. It was very little. It look the
- 13:37Speaker 2: the detackles and tackles very limited engagement, like they're really
- 13:42Speaker 2: not pushing and I supposed to. It's sort of like
- 13:45Speaker 2: a line dance, but god forbid, he throws his shoulder out.
- 13:49Speaker 1: It's right.
- 13:51Speaker 2: It becomes an issue if he is not practicing, like
- 13:53Speaker 2: now last year, you correct me if I'm wrong. He
- 13:57Speaker 2: and this is strictly because of the shoulders. He didn't
- 14:01Speaker 2: work that. I think he was on their injury report
- 14:02Speaker 2: to start training camp. I remember we were alarmed by that,
- 14:04Speaker 2: like what why is it the shoulder the problem?
- 14:06Speaker 1: You're right, I think you're right, and they want a
- 14:08Speaker 1: big deal, but it wound up being you know.
- 14:10Speaker 2: It was, Yeah, it's I'll be interesting to see if
- 14:15Speaker 2: the deal gets done, you know, early in training camp
- 14:17Speaker 2: or by the start training camp, what the structure looks like.
- 14:19Speaker 2: When could they get out of it? Because if his
- 14:20Speaker 2: shoulders are a problem again, like dealt the field stuff
- 14:24Speaker 2: coming out of Georgia's under control from what we understand,
- 14:26Speaker 2: but shoulders, man, you worry about that. And by the way,
- 14:30Speaker 2: real quick, on Jordan Davis's contract, they're pretty much by
- 14:38Speaker 2: structure locked in through twenty eight because his okay good.
- 14:41Speaker 2: His total cash in twenty eight becomes fully guaranteed this March.
- 14:49Speaker 2: He's got an advanced guarantee on his contract, so they
- 14:51Speaker 2: can walk away after twenty eight if he's not playing well.
- 14:56Speaker 2: They're going to be locked into twenty six million and
- 14:57Speaker 2: twenty for Jordan Davis's contract, but after that he's got
- 15:00Speaker 2: twenty six million due in twenty nine. None of it's guaranteed.
- 15:03Speaker 1: Oh wait, but in twenty twenty eight if they release
- 15:08Speaker 1: him or yeah, let's hypothetically say he's terrible in two thousand,
- 15:12Speaker 1: this year and next year. You said that, when does
- 15:15Speaker 1: the when does the money kick in and guarantee he.
- 15:18Speaker 2: Can't cut him? Yeah? It let me see his cash.
- 15:23Speaker 2: If twenty six million do in twenty eight, all of
- 15:27Speaker 2: it becomes fully guaranteed. That looks like, by my the
- 15:32Speaker 2: stuff that was sent to me, it looks like this March.
- 15:37Speaker 2: This March the fifth day free agency.
- 15:39Speaker 1: Okay, So if he's terrible for two years, why couldn't
- 15:41Speaker 1: they cut him in after, like in February of twenty
- 15:45Speaker 1: twenty eight.
- 15:45Speaker 2: Oh no, no can't. Oh yeah, I'm just saying. I'm just saying,
- 15:48Speaker 2: so no, no, no, twenty eight. You don't understand. Twenty
- 15:52Speaker 2: eight money is fully guaranteed. His his cash for twenty
- 15:56Speaker 2: twenty eight. Remember it's it's guaranteed in advance. This is
- 16:00Speaker 2: the new thing. I get what you're saying now, and
- 16:02Speaker 2: I'm going to tell you why these Yeah, these I
- 16:05Speaker 2: mentioned before bus Cook started doing this. Who's Brett Far's
- 16:09Speaker 2: agent and also j Cutler's. No team would do this
- 16:11Speaker 2: this is when he was with the Bears, right, and
- 16:14Speaker 2: uh it. You know, when you get fully guaranteed money,
- 16:19Speaker 2: it's got to go in to escrow. That's a we
- 16:21Speaker 2: like never talk about this, but that's yeah, a lot
- 16:24Speaker 2: some cap managers, by the way, they've they've never had
- 16:26Speaker 2: they they don't deal with that part of it. They don't.
- 16:29Speaker 2: They're not you know, they're not dealing with like cash transactions.
- 16:32Speaker 1: Yeah, they're not bankers.
- 16:34Speaker 2: Yeah right, right, But it's funny. I've asked guys over
- 16:37Speaker 2: the years and they're not super familiar with it. But
- 16:39Speaker 2: the only thing they don't know, but you have to
- 16:41Speaker 2: it's fully guaranteed its signing. You have to move it
- 16:43Speaker 2: in there. Right, So clubs are not doing that, like
- 16:46Speaker 2: it's called the funding rule. Yep. So it should really
- 16:49Speaker 2: go away. It's embarrassing, right, I.
- 16:51Speaker 1: Gotcha, you're yeah. So as long as on the roster
- 16:53Speaker 1: by a certain time in two twenty seven, then the
- 16:55Speaker 1: twenty twenty money kicks.
- 16:57Speaker 2: Y a free agency. Yeah. So even if he plays
- 17:00Speaker 2: terribly the season doesn't matter, he's coming back to twenty
- 17:02Speaker 2: eight because it's already guaranteed.
- 17:03Speaker 1: This march, gotcha, all right, So that's important to know,
- 17:06Speaker 1: because that's a lot of money for the next three years.
- 17:07Speaker 1: And they got other guys coming up, and I'm sure
- 17:10Speaker 1: that that's factory also into their discussions with Jalen Carter
- 17:14Speaker 1: as well. So we've got Carter right, We've got Davis here.
- 17:19Speaker 1: Let's go to morow with Jomo. He's an interesting one.
- 17:22Speaker 2: Boy.
- 17:22Speaker 1: It is the last year of his rookie deal.
- 17:25Speaker 2: Correct, Yeah, he's gonna make three point six million right now.
- 17:29Speaker 2: He changed agencies. Okay, this it'll be fascinating because you
- 17:36Speaker 2: mentioned all these players that Eagles are gonna next year
- 17:39Speaker 2: after the season, Degene Mitchell, Eagles are gonna you know,
- 17:42Speaker 2: they're gonna aggressive trying to get this extended. This is
- 17:44Speaker 2: the way they do business. They're gonna have so many
- 17:48Speaker 2: defensive players under long term contracts bonds. Will be interesting
- 17:52Speaker 2: to see what they do with him because he has
- 17:53Speaker 2: not slowed down at all. Remember they just extended Grenard's contract.
- 17:57Speaker 2: They fully guaranteed two years. We'll get to him on
- 17:59Speaker 2: the next show. You got hunt. Who's up boy? If
- 18:03Speaker 2: he breaks out, he was coming on last year. M hm.
- 18:06Speaker 2: See about Nolan Smith's they picked up a fifth year option.
- 18:11Speaker 2: They have so many guys that could be here a
- 18:13Speaker 2: long time. You can't pay everybody on your point that
- 18:15Speaker 2: you made earlier. Yeah, I don't know who would go though,
- 18:19Speaker 2: I don't know. It's people want to say, oh well,
- 18:22Speaker 2: they'll just trot UNI could take Bond's I know, trot Junior.
- 18:26Speaker 2: People excited about him. That's great. Bond is a Bond
- 18:29Speaker 2: as an inside backers top three or top four. This
- 18:32Speaker 2: is going from strictly tape study talking to people of
- 18:34Speaker 2: people's tap. He's a phenomenal football player. Who the hell know?
- 18:37Speaker 2: But he's great.
- 18:38Speaker 1: Sure, but you're gonna wind up talking yourself into every
- 18:42Speaker 1: someone's going to hell.
- 18:43Speaker 2: I know, but I don't know. Who could let me
- 18:44Speaker 2: ask you this? Who could go? Who would you trade?
- 18:47Speaker 1: Dude? I really I don't I don't know. I mean,
- 18:49Speaker 1: it may just be a case where you let Bond walk.
- 18:52Speaker 1: I really don't know. You may have to let both walk.
- 18:57Speaker 1: I mean it maybe somebody on offense. That's why I
- 18:59Speaker 1: don't want to get too far down the rabbit hole.
- 19:01Speaker 1: But we got to see how this year plays out.
- 19:03Speaker 1: But a Jomo, to me is a tough case for
- 19:08Speaker 1: resigning because if he's just paying attention to what his
- 19:11Speaker 1: teammates have made on the free agent market, and he
- 19:14Speaker 1: expects himself to be put in a really good position
- 19:17Speaker 1: this year, just like Milton Williams was two years ago.
- 19:20Speaker 1: You know, to be surrounded by great pass rushers to
- 19:22Speaker 1: be able to get big sack numbers and pressure numbers
- 19:25Speaker 1: and win rate numbers, and he's a good player, then
- 19:27Speaker 1: he's probably going to put himself in line to get
- 19:31Speaker 1: a real top of the market type of deal next offseason,
- 19:34Speaker 1: even if it's like not twenty six million a year,
- 19:37Speaker 1: like even if it's like eighteen to twenty five, that's
- 19:40Speaker 1: really good and it's hard to then. I'm sure the
- 19:44Speaker 1: Eagles would love to have him on their terms. I'm
- 19:47Speaker 1: sure his terms are gonna be if his agent's good,
- 19:50Speaker 1: they're gonna be really expensive terms. Though Here's here's the
- 19:53Speaker 1: thing with.
- 19:55Speaker 2: I know Milt Williams steel was last year. But if
- 19:59Speaker 2: they don't extend this before the start of the season
- 20:01Speaker 2: and he does walk and he has a really good year,
- 20:04Speaker 2: I just don't see any way you can bring him
- 20:06Speaker 2: back because they have so many guys have to extend, right,
- 20:10Speaker 2: you can't. This is this is a great problem to
- 20:13Speaker 2: have in terms of you so many guys who want
- 20:15Speaker 2: to keep but you can't. You just can't. It's uh,
- 20:19Speaker 2: it's fascinating. I don't even know how how he does
- 20:21Speaker 2: it like it's It took him forever, but he finally
- 20:24Speaker 2: mastered the draft for the most part, a really good
- 20:26Speaker 2: drafter yep. And with he got a good they got
- 20:30Speaker 2: a good deal on Grenard. They did well in that
- 20:33Speaker 2: structures as I looked at it. Talk about the next show,
- 20:37Speaker 2: but that's it. That's pretty much Ty Robinson's second year
- 20:41Speaker 2: of its four year deal. Barron Young is on the
- 20:43Speaker 2: final year of his rookie deal. Remember they claimed him
- 20:45Speaker 2: off waivers. He's been a it's been a good story. Look,
- 20:47Speaker 2: they could always look to bring him back on a
- 20:49Speaker 2: low end deal. He he's I don't have to do it.
- 20:51Speaker 2: NI con do it anytime they want. He's eligible now
- 20:53Speaker 2: to get extended. But he's a guy's a good backup.
- 20:56Speaker 1: How does the Byron Young contract work in terms of
- 21:00Speaker 1: when he was cut from the Raiders?
- 21:02Speaker 2: Right? So he was claimed off waivers, right, So the
- 21:06Speaker 2: Eagles took his contract, which was a rookie contract.
- 21:09Speaker 1: Yeah in the yeah, okay, but did he not make
- 21:13Speaker 1: the team though? When? Because didn't he wasn't on the
- 21:16Speaker 1: practice squad for his first year.
- 21:17Speaker 2: With the Eagles. Let me look, let me double check.
- 21:20Speaker 1: I think that contract got terminated once they they waived him.
- 21:25Speaker 2: No, he was waved and Eagles claimed it. No, he's
- 21:29Speaker 2: never been cut. He no, here's what happened. He went
- 21:31Speaker 2: on i R twice.
- 21:33Speaker 1: Ah, that's right.
- 21:34Speaker 2: Okay, that's he didn't do anything in the year one, and.
- 21:37Speaker 1: He's never been on the practice squad for the Okay, Okay,
- 21:41Speaker 1: that makes sense. Now, all right. I think I was
- 21:43Speaker 1: thinking of Gabe Hall. Actually he's been on.
- 21:45Speaker 2: Yeah, he's been on and off.
- 21:46Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, yeah, okay, So this would be then the
- 21:49Speaker 1: fourth year of his four year deal.
- 21:51Speaker 2: Yeah, so year for him a.
- 21:54Speaker 1: Player, and if the Eagles have some injuries again and
- 21:57Speaker 1: he steps in, he can kind of revive his career
- 22:00Speaker 1: a little bit.
- 22:02Speaker 2: Yeah. Good player, man. He to this day, I'll never
- 22:04Speaker 2: understand what the Raiders were thinking. It's I understand he
- 22:10Speaker 2: was cut by you know, they kept having turnover in
- 22:12Speaker 2: the front office, so he was cut, but and Eagles
- 22:16Speaker 2: claimed him. He's gonna make one point five to two
- 22:19Speaker 2: million this season, not guaranteed, but obvious. He's not going
- 22:21Speaker 2: Anywhere's he was their top backup last season.
- 22:24Speaker 1: Good player, Yeah, yeah, No, I agree with you. I mean,
- 22:26Speaker 1: there's just not enough defensive tackle depth in this league,
- 22:29Speaker 1: good defensive tackle depth to just give up on a
- 22:32Speaker 1: guy that, even if it was a different regime. I mean,
- 22:35Speaker 1: he went to Alabama, who was a productive player there.
- 22:39Speaker 1: I mean, maybe he was overdrafted a little bit by
- 22:40Speaker 1: the Raiders, but he was certainly an employable player. I
- 22:44Speaker 1: don't think that he was somebody that was like, oh man,
- 22:46Speaker 1: I can't believe they drafted this guy. He's a priority
- 22:49Speaker 1: free agent. No, I mean to give up on him
- 22:52Speaker 1: like that, well, you know what they say, right, One
- 22:54Speaker 1: team's junk is another team's treasure. So smart on the
- 22:57Speaker 1: Eagles to jump on that. And if he has a
- 23:00Speaker 1: good year, he can maybe find himself, you know, vying
- 23:03Speaker 1: somewhere next year. But he'll be he'll be an important
- 23:06Speaker 1: backup for the Eagles this year. And that's that's a
- 23:09Speaker 1: that's a look at our interior defensive line situation. The
- 23:13Speaker 1: real big takeaway is once if Jalen Carter gets his
- 23:16Speaker 1: deal done before the start of the season, and I
- 23:18Speaker 1: think that there's more than a good chance of that happening,
- 23:21Speaker 1: the Eagles are gonna have two top five paid defensive
- 23:24Speaker 1: lineman interior defensive linemen in the league, and that's gonna
- 23:28Speaker 1: make our conversations about edge, linebacker, corner and safety really
- 23:33Speaker 1: interesting in our future pods.
- 23:36Speaker 2: I agree.
