- 1:13Speaker 2: Hi Catherine, Hi Chelsea. How's it going well.
- 1:17Speaker 1: I'm still recovering from Vegas. I had a real quick turnaround.
- 1:20Speaker 1: I did one of my shows this weekend for my residency.
- 1:23Speaker 1: I had a lot of people come, a lot of friends.
- 1:26Speaker 1: We went to dinner, then we went to my show.
- 1:29Speaker 1: Really fun, working on all my new material for my
- 1:31Speaker 1: new tour, and then we went and gambled. I won
- 1:35Speaker 1: thirty five hundred dollars. I mean, I'm unstoppable, basically. I've
- 1:39Speaker 1: also I'm betting on the super Bowl, so that's good.
- 1:42Speaker 2: Oh, she's a sports betting girly. Yeah, I'm bored. I'm
- 1:44Speaker 2: betting with sports. Yeah. Me and my new friend are
- 1:46Speaker 2: betting a lot.
- 1:47Speaker 1: He's a gambler, so I've just decided to join his
- 1:49Speaker 1: gambling addiction.
- 1:50Speaker 2: And I'm into it. As long as you keep winning,
- 1:53Speaker 2: it's great.
- 1:53Speaker 1: But I had a six am flight out of Vegas,
- 1:57Speaker 1: so I got home at one point thirty and then
- 1:59Speaker 1: at four I was like, guys, I don't know that
- 2:01Speaker 1: I'm gonna make this flight. I said to my assistance,
- 2:04Speaker 1: I'm like you guys, so you know have a backup one,
- 2:06Speaker 1: but I don't like spending the day in Vegas, and
- 2:08Speaker 1: the next direct flight back to Vancouver was at four
- 2:10Speaker 1: forty five, so I went to bed at one thirty,
- 2:13Speaker 1: woke up at four point thirty to make my six
- 2:15Speaker 1: thirty flight, six fifteen flight out of Vegas to Vancouver.
- 2:18Speaker 1: I was drunk at the airport. I was a mess.
- 2:22Speaker 1: I got to Vancouver. I spent the entire time looking
- 2:24Speaker 1: at ridiculous videos of the people that trend where people
- 2:28Speaker 1: call their parents and say the police are coming following
- 2:31Speaker 1: them back to their house because they told them their
- 2:33Speaker 1: parents had fallen, so that when they get home to
- 2:35Speaker 1: their house, their parents have to be on the ground
- 2:37Speaker 1: acting like they felt down the stairs. I mean, I
- 2:40Speaker 1: was laughing so hard on the flight. I was so delirious.
- 2:44Speaker 1: I finally sobered up. I got to Vancouver. I get
- 2:47Speaker 1: off the plane and I forget I had a tote
- 2:50Speaker 1: bag because Carlos brings all my stuff from LA so
- 2:52Speaker 1: I don't have to travel with a lot. But I
- 2:54Speaker 1: forgot my tote bag, which had my computer, like all
- 2:56Speaker 1: my stuff.
- 2:57Speaker 2: I left it in the overhead. Been just completely forgot.
- 3:00Speaker 1: I hadn't even had bags yeah, walked all the way
- 3:02Speaker 1: to customs and this woman is like.
- 3:04Speaker 2: Miss miss you left your bag in the overhead been
- 3:08Speaker 2: and she was another passenger. Oh my god, who ever
- 3:11Speaker 2: pays attention? And she didn't recognize me because she didn't
- 3:14Speaker 2: say miss handler. Yes, yeah she didn't. She was just like,
- 3:17Speaker 2: miss I brought this for you, you left me.
- 3:19Speaker 1: And I'm like, oh my god, I'm like, who pays
- 3:21Speaker 1: attention to other people's luggage? Like I don't pay attention
- 3:25Speaker 1: to who's putting what in the overhead bit it was
- 3:28Speaker 1: real nice.
- 3:28Speaker 2: I'm like, thank you so much. I mean it was Yeah,
- 3:31Speaker 2: that was stories of faith in humanity. I know, I know,
- 3:34Speaker 2: I know. I'm a lucky girl.
- 3:36Speaker 3: Yeah, okay, I do have to ask you, what do
- 3:38Speaker 3: you think about all this Beckham drama?
- 3:39Speaker 2: Are you keeping up on this a little bit about
- 3:42Speaker 2: Victoria Beckham and the kids?
- 3:45Speaker 1: I mean, I don't really know anything about them, but
- 3:47Speaker 1: it tracks from what I do know, it does.
- 3:49Speaker 2: It sounds plausible.
- 3:52Speaker 3: I feel like there's probably bad behavior on both sides.
- 3:54Speaker 3: But I feel like the big red flag is that
- 3:57Speaker 3: the like son and daughter in law just had like
- 3:59Speaker 3: they renew their vows already, like they had a vow renewal.
- 4:02Speaker 3: I'm like, when you have to do that a year
- 4:03Speaker 3: or two in, Yeah, I think it's curtains. Yeah, it's
- 4:06Speaker 3: a bad sign. I think, yeah, you're probably right about that. Yeah,
- 4:10Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 4:11Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 4:11Speaker 1: I don't find that much interest in the and that
- 4:13Speaker 1: and that story. But I mean, yeah, it's kind of.
- 4:16Speaker 2: I just like people airing their dirty laundry that I
- 4:18Speaker 2: find out.
- 4:18Speaker 1: What about the Blake Lively and Taylor Swift messages and
- 4:21Speaker 1: all the what not? Even first of all, Taylor Swift
- 4:24Speaker 1: comes out looking awesome once again. Of course, Blake Lively
- 4:28Speaker 1: and Ryan Rednells like, oh my god, so embarrassing to
- 4:33Speaker 1: have all of those texts and voice memos released.
- 4:36Speaker 2: It's so embarrassing.
- 4:38Speaker 3: Can you imagine every random thing you texted your front
- 4:41Speaker 3: no way, no way.
- 4:42Speaker 1: God is just like stop it. Those two must be
- 4:45Speaker 1: like under a curtain somewhere and like stop, make this
- 4:48Speaker 1: go away.
- 4:49Speaker 3: They didn't get the Oprah advice of like imagine it
- 4:52Speaker 3: on the front page of the New York Times, like
- 4:54Speaker 3: whatever you're.
- 4:54Speaker 1: Sending it a text or you think about that when
- 4:56Speaker 1: I text people anything, I'm like, does you imagine this
- 4:58Speaker 1: is going to be public at some point, because it
- 5:00Speaker 1: probably will well.
- 5:02Speaker 2: Our guest today is going to the Olympics.
- 5:05Speaker 1: I know, yes, you guys, the Olympics are happening. Today's
- 5:08Speaker 1: guest is a world champion and Olympic he's so funny too,
- 5:11Speaker 1: and an Olympic snowboarder, entrepreneur, philanthropists. He's won two Olympic medals,
- 5:16Speaker 1: ten X game medals, five World half Pipe Championship gold medals,
- 5:21Speaker 1: and he's headed to try and snag the gold this
- 5:23Speaker 1: month at the Olympics in Milan Courtina. His new documentary
- 5:28Speaker 1: is called pipe Dream. It's on Netflix now, so please
- 5:31Speaker 1: welcome Scottie James. Scottie James, Welcome to Dear Chelsea.
- 5:36Speaker 4: Hi, Hi, thank you for having me.
- 5:38Speaker 1: Thanks for taking the time to catch up during your
- 5:41Speaker 1: season with the Olympics about to happen.
- 5:44Speaker 2: You're having an incredible season.
- 5:45Speaker 1: I know you just won again in Switzerland, so congrats
- 5:48Speaker 1: on that.
- 5:50Speaker 4: How are you feeling, I'm feeling good. Look, we needed
- 5:53Speaker 4: to catch up Chelsea before the Olympics. We know we're
- 5:56Speaker 4: approaching closely, so I just needed your inside before we
- 6:00Speaker 4: head over to Italy. But so far the season's been
- 6:04Speaker 4: been great. But now I'm feeling really good and yeah,
- 6:07Speaker 4: and naturally, obviously getting and went under the belt this
- 6:09Speaker 4: time of year is a good confidence boost. So yeah,
- 6:12Speaker 4: looking forward to the rest of the season.
- 6:14Speaker 2: I want to know all of it.
- 6:15Speaker 1: I want to know how what your process is, how
- 6:18Speaker 1: you maintain what you do before you race. I mean, listen,
- 6:23Speaker 1: your favorite to win gold at the Olympics this year,
- 6:25Speaker 1: so no pressure. You are a snowboarder, so I take
- 6:28Speaker 1: issue with that because we're going to have to discuss
- 6:30Speaker 1: that etiquette as well. The only two times I've been
- 6:32Speaker 1: hit on a ski mountain are by snowboarders, two snowboarders,
- 6:36Speaker 1: and one happened the other day too. But first of all, okay,
- 6:39Speaker 1: let's talk gold at the Olympics and Milan Courtina. So
- 6:43Speaker 1: tell me how you're feeling about it, How you look
- 6:45Speaker 1: at things like this, What do you do with the
- 6:47Speaker 1: pressure that is put upon you by being so good.
- 6:50Speaker 4: At what you do? Yeah, I mean, naturally, coming into
- 6:53Speaker 4: this games, it's you know, you feel that pressure. I
- 6:56Speaker 4: think there's always the pressure you put on yourself, but
- 6:59Speaker 4: then you know, there's all this exterior pressure that people
- 7:02Speaker 4: put on you to want to they want you to
- 7:04Speaker 4: show up and deliver maybe the result that they expect,
- 7:07Speaker 4: and that's from the fans to your country that you're representing,
- 7:10Speaker 4: and I think most importantly more so myself. I think
- 7:14Speaker 4: I do go into every event with the intent to
- 7:17Speaker 4: want to do my best and put my best foot
- 7:19Speaker 4: forward to win, and that's the approach with the Games.
- 7:23Speaker 4: But yeah, I mean when you're out there wearing your
- 7:25Speaker 4: country colors and you're flat flying the flag and there's
- 7:28Speaker 4: obviously a lot more attention, you know, you feel that
- 7:32Speaker 4: pressure a bit more. But I mean it's my fifth
- 7:35Speaker 4: go around now, so from the pressure perspective, but also experience,
- 7:39Speaker 4: I feel a little bit more vintage, which is a
- 7:42Speaker 4: good thing I think in this case. So I'm no
- 7:46Speaker 4: to be honest, I'm really excited. I feel like I've
- 7:48Speaker 4: had a great preparation and the leadup's been awesome. So
- 7:52Speaker 4: I just have to focus on the important things like
- 7:55Speaker 4: fundamentals and making sure that I'm prepared from a practical
- 7:59Speaker 4: stamp point snowboarding and the rest will we'll do what
- 8:03Speaker 4: it will do.
- 8:04Speaker 1: And what happens the day of what happens the day
- 8:06Speaker 1: of a big competition, Like are you superstitious?
- 8:09Speaker 2: What is your regimen? What is your ritual.
- 8:12Speaker 4: I don't have too many rituals. I necessarily do before
- 8:16Speaker 4: the event, but I always wear my red gloves in
- 8:18Speaker 4: the events, Like I guess that's a ritual. It's something
- 8:21Speaker 4: that I always have. I listened to a lot of
- 8:23Speaker 4: music actually when I'm training and competing as well, No
- 8:26Speaker 4: specific artists, just depends how I'm feeling on.
- 8:29Speaker 2: The day, elevator music. Wait, what's with the red gloves?
- 8:32Speaker 2: Where did those come from? Is that to remind people
- 8:34Speaker 2: that you're a redhead?
- 8:35Speaker 4: Exactly? Yeah, yeah, just because you know, I got so
- 8:38Speaker 4: much equipment on and you know, it's hard to see
- 8:40Speaker 4: the red hair sometimes. But now, in two thousand and seventeen,
- 8:45Speaker 4: I want to say, I won my first X Games
- 8:47Speaker 4: gold medal and I'd come from another event in Switzerland
- 8:51Speaker 4: and I saw these red gloves, which a brand at
- 8:54Speaker 4: the time had sent me in. Anyway, I put the
- 8:56Speaker 4: gloves on, and I felt like I was coming out
- 8:59Speaker 4: to fight a bit that week, a bit of strength
- 9:01Speaker 4: and adversity, and I won the event and it was
- 9:04Speaker 4: obviously a huge market event for us, and ever since
- 9:07Speaker 4: then it's been my thing. I always wear my red gloves,
- 9:10Speaker 4: so it's been a fun little narrative.
- 9:13Speaker 2: Oh, I like that.
- 9:14Speaker 1: There was just a gambling movie that I watched with
- 9:16Speaker 1: Colin Farrell where he wore gloves while he gambled, but
- 9:20Speaker 1: he lost all the time. And I'm like, how does
- 9:22Speaker 1: superstitions maintain when they don't work.
- 9:24Speaker 2: A lot of the time, you know what I mean?
- 9:25Speaker 1: When people are like, I've got to do it this way,
- 9:27Speaker 1: I've got to do it, and it's like it's not
- 9:28Speaker 1: working for you, so stop doing that.
- 9:30Speaker 4: He doesn't have the right gloves on your calling some
- 9:33Speaker 4: of the red.
- 9:33Speaker 2: Onesah, how many pairs of red gloves do you have?
- 9:36Speaker 4: By the way, many many? Well, we make our own gloves,
- 9:40Speaker 4: we sell them. But you know I also have I
- 9:43Speaker 4: mean through a season, I actually don't use that many.
- 9:46Speaker 4: Like one pair. They're pretty durable and good. But yeah,
- 9:50Speaker 4: in a season, I try and keep one pair because
- 9:52Speaker 4: when I wear one pair, it's a bit superstitious. Like
- 9:56Speaker 4: I'm like, I got to keep wearing them, particularly if
- 9:59Speaker 4: it's a good season.
- 10:00Speaker 1: So yeah, And so I know you're friends with Sean Waite.
- 10:03Speaker 1: You guys are buddies, right, You competed a lot together
- 10:06Speaker 1: and now you've you've surpassed him. I mean you're the
- 10:08Speaker 1: greatest snowboarder of all time as we sit here today.
- 10:11Speaker 1: So how does that impact your relationship? Because I know
- 10:14Speaker 1: how insecure he is.
- 10:15Speaker 4: I'm just kidding.
- 10:16Speaker 2: I do know how insecure he is.
- 10:18Speaker 4: So but we all are, We all are, That's very true. Well,
- 10:22Speaker 4: if you look hard enough, everyone's got one, that's right.
- 10:25Speaker 4: I think we have a good relationship. Actually, I think
- 10:28Speaker 4: naturally evolved over time because you know, I was a
- 10:31Speaker 4: little kid, put him on a pedestal and you know,
- 10:34Speaker 4: as a hero, and yeah, naturally, you know, with respect
- 10:37Speaker 4: the Shawn, he's one of the greats in my discipline.
- 10:40Speaker 4: So always looked up to him, and from when I
- 10:43Speaker 4: was a kid to watching to I guess to try
- 10:47Speaker 4: and emulate the kind of success he had in the career,
- 10:50Speaker 4: and then being able to do that in my own way,
- 10:52Speaker 4: and then us building a relationship on the mountain. Obviously competitors.
- 10:57Speaker 4: We both wore our heart on our sleeves at times.
- 10:59Speaker 4: There's ten to them, him retiring and now you know,
- 11:02Speaker 4: we text and we have a good relationship. So yeah,
- 11:05Speaker 4: it's been a fun journey, I guess, to say the least.
- 11:08Speaker 4: But yeah, I have a lot of respect for him.
- 11:10Speaker 4: I think he's been amazing on the hill.
- 11:12Speaker 1: I want to know more about what you guys do
- 11:14Speaker 1: when you What do you do when you when when
- 11:16Speaker 1: you win?
- 11:16Speaker 2: How do you celebrate?
- 11:17Speaker 1: Because I was talking to Mikaela Schiffrin and she just
- 11:20Speaker 1: like found out about Champagne a year ago, and I'm like, sister,
- 11:23Speaker 1: what is the point of winning all of these and
- 11:25Speaker 1: being on all these podiums and winning all of these
- 11:28Speaker 1: races if you don't know how to celebrate. She's like,
- 11:31Speaker 1: it just never occurred to us. She's like, I didn't
- 11:33Speaker 1: even know. And then once I think she celebrated once,
- 11:36Speaker 1: she's like, oh wait, wait, wait, this is actually a
- 11:37Speaker 1: really good time.
- 11:38Speaker 2: We should do this more often.
- 11:40Speaker 4: Well, unlike Mikayla Shifferin and Chelsea, you be very proud
- 11:44Speaker 4: of me. I discovered the Champagne celebrations a little while ago.
- 11:48Speaker 2: So you're Australian, so I do believe you. I do
- 11:50Speaker 2: believe you. The only people who drink more than Americans
- 11:53Speaker 2: are Australians, so I get it. Exactly where did you
- 11:56Speaker 2: grow up in Australia.
- 11:57Speaker 4: I grew up in a little town about forty five.
- 12:00Speaker 4: I mean it's out of Melbourne. The city called Warrem Knighte.
- 12:04Speaker 4: So it's a tongue twister that you can try and
- 12:06Speaker 4: say it Warren Knight.
- 12:07Speaker 2: Warren Date. Okay, I tried it and it worked. So
- 12:11Speaker 2: it's a huge six. Get a bottle of champagne.
- 12:13Speaker 4: Hold on one second, You're allowed to enter our local pub.
- 12:16Speaker 4: It's like, you know, it's the right of passage if
- 12:18Speaker 4: you can say Warren Ntte. So yeah, no, little town
- 12:21Speaker 4: and my family still live there and I've got a
- 12:24Speaker 4: house not far from there.
- 12:25Speaker 1: So yeah, and so how does one get into snowboarding?
- 12:28Speaker 1: I know a lot of skiing happens in Australia. People
- 12:31Speaker 1: come over here.
- 12:32Speaker 2: I love.
- 12:33Speaker 1: I'm in Whistler, Canada right now and where this mountain
- 12:35Speaker 1: is filled with ausie.
- 12:36Speaker 2: So how did you start in? Like what age? You're
- 12:39Speaker 2: like three years old?
- 12:40Speaker 4: Right? Yeah, I was really young when I started. I
- 12:43Speaker 4: don't even remember the first day, the first day I
- 12:46Speaker 4: went on the hill first time. I kind of remember snowboarding.
- 12:49Speaker 4: I would have been probably seven or eight years old,
- 12:51Speaker 4: maybe ten, but i'd started. Yeah, when I was three.
- 12:55Speaker 4: At least I was on skis I think for a
- 12:57Speaker 4: little bit, which is a bit controversial, but transferred over
- 13:01Speaker 4: to snowboarding. Yeah we I mean in Australia, we do
- 13:05Speaker 4: have mountains, we have snowy mountains.
- 13:07Speaker 5: You know.
- 13:08Speaker 4: My local resort in Australia's Threadbos. So we we just
- 13:12Speaker 4: don't have a long season, so we were always having
- 13:15Speaker 4: to travel overseas. I actually spent a lot of time
- 13:17Speaker 4: in Canada and BC. We just got a mountain called
- 13:19Speaker 4: Big White. I went to Whistler. Yeah, yeah, we loved
- 13:22Speaker 4: it over there. So my family weren't your typical Aussie
- 13:26Speaker 4: family playing tennis, to going to the beach or doing
- 13:29Speaker 4: you know those summer sports that most Australians do. We
- 13:33Speaker 4: were chasing the winter so it's fun.
- 13:36Speaker 1: And so at what age did you go okay, this
- 13:38Speaker 1: is going to be I want to know how something
- 13:40Speaker 1: like this happens when you start so early, Like what
- 13:42Speaker 1: percentage of your parents' encouragement was it, what percentage passion
- 13:46Speaker 1: was it? Like what's the ratio of how things started
- 13:49Speaker 1: to get serious for.
- 13:51Speaker 4: You in this sport. I would say I think others
- 13:54Speaker 4: made that decision for me, because you know, so young,
- 13:57Speaker 4: you don't really snowboarding. Such a young demograph we have.
- 14:01Speaker 4: You know, I'm now thirty one and I'm competing against
- 14:03Speaker 4: eighteen year olds, and even before that, if you're you know,
- 14:06Speaker 4: extraordinary talent, you're sixteen and you know you're competing with
- 14:10Speaker 4: the men. So it's you do have to start young
- 14:13Speaker 4: and get good young so you can start to repel
- 14:17Speaker 4: yourself into the career. So I really don't think I
- 14:20Speaker 4: realized that it was a professional career or something that
- 14:24Speaker 4: I would comprehend until I was about thirteen or twelve
- 14:28Speaker 4: or thirteen years old. But before that, you know, even
- 14:32Speaker 4: now speaking to my parents, they had to kind of
- 14:34Speaker 4: realize that dream for me. It is something that I
- 14:37Speaker 4: obviously wanted to do, but they had to create the
- 14:40Speaker 4: pathway for me from when I was, you know, seven
- 14:43Speaker 4: or eight years old. I obviously had no awareness of that.
- 14:47Speaker 4: I was just up on the mountain enjoying what I
- 14:49Speaker 4: was doing and having fun and I still do that,
- 14:51Speaker 4: but they were, you know, creating that avenue for me
- 14:54Speaker 4: if it's something that I really wanted to do down
- 14:57Speaker 4: the line. So that point would have been, I would
- 15:00Speaker 4: say twelve eleven or twelve years old was when I
- 15:02Speaker 4: was like, okay, I want to take that leap into
- 15:05Speaker 4: realizing this as a potential profession.
- 15:08Speaker 1: Because you're one of you're the youngest of four kids. Yeah, yeah,
- 15:11Speaker 1: and so are you. Were you the only one in
- 15:13Speaker 1: your family that got that passionate about sport?
- 15:16Speaker 4: Yeah, youngest in my family of four, the most spoilt one.
- 15:20Speaker 4: Apparently in the midst too.
- 15:21Speaker 1: I'm the youngest of sex and it's the best position
- 15:23Speaker 1: to be in.
- 15:24Speaker 2: The youngest is the best.
- 15:25Speaker 4: I mean, Chelsea, look at us, we're the best. I mean,
- 15:28Speaker 4: it just is what it is, you know, but not
- 15:30Speaker 4: I think it was ten or eleven. I propelled myself
- 15:34Speaker 4: into it.
- 15:34Speaker 3: I have a question about like, as your body is
- 15:37Speaker 3: changing when you're starting that young. I know, you're pretty
- 15:40Speaker 3: tall for a snowboarder, Like you're starting with one center
- 15:43Speaker 3: of gravity, and you know, growing into a very different
- 15:47Speaker 3: shaped human.
- 15:48Speaker 2: What was that like and were there struggles with that?
- 15:51Speaker 4: Absolutely? Yeah, I would. I would say I'm a very
- 15:54Speaker 4: differently shaped human up there on the mountain.
- 15:57Speaker 1: Did you try to stunt your growth so it could
- 15:59Speaker 1: be a little bit more operational for you? I guess
- 16:01Speaker 1: it's not really having that much of an impact for you.
- 16:04Speaker 1: So if you were shorter, who knows if you'd be
- 16:05Speaker 1: able to accomplish all.
- 16:06Speaker 2: Of these things.
- 16:08Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean it might have helped, and maybe my
- 16:11Speaker 4: parents looked into that They're like, oh boy, how are
- 16:13Speaker 4: we going to stop this growth thing from happening? But no,
- 16:16Speaker 4: it's yeah. I mean a lot of my competitors are
- 16:18Speaker 4: five four five three six foot two, so it's a
- 16:22Speaker 4: it's a significant difference, And where that can be challenging is,
- 16:26Speaker 4: without getting into too much snowboarding lingo, the half pipe,
- 16:31Speaker 4: the walls twenty two foot high, and typically when you're
- 16:33Speaker 4: riding up the wall, you're hitting a lot of g force.
- 16:35Speaker 4: So when you have a lower center of gravity, you
- 16:37Speaker 4: naturally don't have as much force pulling you down into
- 16:40Speaker 4: the ground, and you can kind of just you're just
- 16:43Speaker 4: a little bit more in control. You have a bit
- 16:45Speaker 4: more awareness of your your surroundings. And for me, sometimes
- 16:49Speaker 4: I feel a little bit like Bamby, like my limbs
- 16:51Speaker 4: are flying every direction and I'm trying to pull them
- 16:54Speaker 4: back in. So I'm compact like the other guys, but
- 16:57Speaker 4: you know, naturally I also have some benefits whereas I'm
- 17:01Speaker 4: a bit heavier. So when it's snowing, we know we're
- 17:03Speaker 4: in an unpredictable profession where it snows, when there's a
- 17:07Speaker 4: lot of variables in those conditions, I'm a bit heavier,
- 17:11Speaker 4: so I can carry more speed. Amplitude is a big
- 17:13Speaker 4: criteria in our sport, so it can be also beneficial,
- 17:17Speaker 4: So I like to focus on the positives, I guess,
- 17:20Speaker 4: but it is a very big difference.
- 17:23Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 17:23Speaker 1: Yeah, And you're married to your wife, says she's your
- 17:26Speaker 1: Your wife name is Chloe, she says, she's the CEO
- 17:28Speaker 1: of your life. She's an heiress to the Aston Martin fortune.
- 17:31Speaker 1: So you're basically a kept man by your wife. So
- 17:34Speaker 1: how does that feel as a professional athlete?
- 17:37Speaker 4: Yep, she's the CEO of Scutty James, as she says,
- 17:41Speaker 4: and she keeps the trains on the tracks.
- 17:43Speaker 2: Yeah, how did you lock that down? Scudy?
- 17:46Speaker 4: Well, I mean, should we go down the whole the
- 17:48Speaker 4: whole story? She always says, I don't tell the story
- 17:51Speaker 4: in detail, but today I can make the exception of
- 17:53Speaker 4: doing that.
- 17:54Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 17:55Speaker 1: We have a lot of female listeners, so they definitely
- 17:57Speaker 1: want the details.
- 17:58Speaker 4: So yeah, gotcha. Okay, Well, I explained it in my
- 18:02Speaker 4: wedding speeches, me being Carrie Bradshaw from Sex and the City,
- 18:05Speaker 4: and I was in New York City walking down one
- 18:09Speaker 4: of the streets in New York and I was thinking,
- 18:11Speaker 4: you know, maybe tonight's the night my love story is
- 18:13Speaker 4: about to begin. And I was playing that that audio
- 18:16Speaker 4: in my head. Walked to a restaurant called Motel Morris
- 18:20Speaker 4: in New York City. It's on the corner of I
- 18:22Speaker 4: wan't say seventh and eighteenth, but I could be wrong.
- 18:25Speaker 4: We got to the restaurant, I met Chloe. I knew
- 18:28Speaker 4: her brother actually before I met Chloe connected us and
- 18:32Speaker 4: sure enough here we are married with a little little
- 18:35Speaker 4: guy as well, and I'm still friends with her brother.
- 18:38Speaker 1: So so what was your move? What did you say
- 18:41Speaker 1: to her? When did you know that you liked her?
- 18:43Speaker 1: And then how did you follow up on it?
- 18:45Speaker 4: M I mean, I think initially she was probably a
- 18:50Speaker 4: bit skeptical, had a very similar experience as yourself with snowboarders.
- 18:56Speaker 4: Her dad frankly didn't like the idea of a snowboarder.
- 19:00Speaker 4: Apparently when she was younger, she was also run over
- 19:03Speaker 4: by a snowboarder, so off to a bad start before
- 19:06Speaker 4: I even walked into the restaurant, so approval from dad
- 19:09Speaker 4: was like big no, no, snowboarder. Naturally, over time, the
- 19:14Speaker 4: accent played a bit of a role and you know,
- 19:17Speaker 4: we both shared a couple of bottles of wine and
- 19:20Speaker 4: that helps.
- 19:22Speaker 1: Yes, yes, yes, okay, that does help. The accent also helps.
- 19:26Speaker 1: For some reason, Americans are just like, she's American, right, Canadian? Canadian?
- 19:31Speaker 1: Was same thing? Well actually not now, but usually it's
- 19:33Speaker 1: the same thing. But yes, yes, and we're suckers for accents.
- 19:37Speaker 1: It doesn't really matter which one any will do. We
- 19:41Speaker 1: just love an accent. So that gets you, That gets
- 19:45Speaker 1: you further for.
- 19:46Speaker 4: Sure, hopefully in some cases. Yes, yeah, yeah.
- 19:49Speaker 2: And now you guys have a kid. You have a
- 19:50Speaker 2: one year old?
- 19:51Speaker 4: Yeah, little Leo. He's one in a few months now.
- 19:55Speaker 4: I'm told myself, I'm not going to be the dad
- 19:57Speaker 4: that says like says it by the months. I'm like,
- 20:00Speaker 4: he's won in three months. I'm I'm not going to
- 20:02Speaker 4: be like a he's a twenty month No, I would
- 20:05Speaker 4: do it too confusing. Just he's one year and a bit.
- 20:08Speaker 4: That's where that's where he's at that moment.
- 20:10Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly exactly. The people who talk in months.
- 20:13Speaker 1: I once had somebody talk to me and said, Tommy
- 20:16Speaker 1: that her child was seventy two months.
- 20:18Speaker 2: I was like, what, I was like, is that five?
- 20:20Speaker 2: What are you talking about do you mean five?
- 20:23Speaker 1: I mean, I don't even know what seventy two months is,
- 20:25Speaker 1: but it's long and I don't have time for that.
- 20:27Speaker 1: Has your son hit the slopes yet? Have you put
- 20:30Speaker 1: him on a snowboard yet?
- 20:32Speaker 4: Not yet? No? No. I went up on the hill
- 20:34Speaker 4: and I put him in the backpack and we went riding,
- 20:37Speaker 4: which was really fun. But I haven't got him on
- 20:39Speaker 4: the board yet. A lot of people ask me that question.
- 20:42Speaker 4: But we'll see when the time's right he can give
- 20:45Speaker 4: it a go.
- 20:46Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 20:46Speaker 1: Okay, let's move on to snowboarding and why it's what
- 20:49Speaker 1: is the what is the problem? What when you are
- 20:54Speaker 1: not a professional athlete like yourself. I want to know,
- 20:58Speaker 1: and I don't want to shame snow borders. I'm dating
- 21:00Speaker 1: as somebody who's snowboards right now. I'm trying to transition
- 21:03Speaker 1: him to skiing, but I don't know that could be
- 21:04Speaker 1: a bigger commitment.
- 21:05Speaker 2: But what is the issue.
- 21:08Speaker 1: Between skiers and snowboarders and where does it come from?
- 21:11Speaker 1: And are there different two different sets of etiquette or
- 21:14Speaker 1: one set of etiquette?
- 21:15Speaker 4: I mean, I think I think it's more so the
- 21:18Speaker 4: skiers have the problem with the snowboarders, not the other
- 21:20Speaker 4: way around. I mean, it's just it's the history.
- 21:24Speaker 2: And but why is there such tension. Why why it's
- 21:28Speaker 2: like England and Ireland.
- 21:29Speaker 1: Why you don't think snowboarders care about skiers. They don't
- 21:34Speaker 1: have a problem, They wouldn't want a snowboard only mountain.
- 21:37Speaker 4: Yeah. I don't know what the gripe is between the two.
- 21:41Speaker 4: I don't have an agenda. I'm like, if you like
- 21:43Speaker 4: the mountains and you have as much fun as I do,
- 21:46Speaker 4: go ahead. But you know, maybe snowboarders in this case
- 21:49Speaker 4: where you're getting run over and you know, Chloe's been
- 21:52Speaker 4: run over in the past, is just not building a
- 21:55Speaker 4: great strong case for us. There's also mountains still in
- 21:58Speaker 4: the US where you're not allowed to snowboard. So yeah.
- 22:03Speaker 4: I actually, funnily enough, when I stayed at the hotel
- 22:05Speaker 4: at one of those mountains before, and it's quite a
- 22:08Speaker 4: strange experience, fighting with not going out on the hill
- 22:11Speaker 4: but staying in the hotels, felt like I was really
- 22:14Speaker 4: in the wrong territory.
- 22:16Speaker 2: Where were you at Deer Valley? Are you talking about
- 22:17Speaker 2: Deer Valley?
- 22:18Speaker 4: Yeah? I was there, Yeah, Yeah, I know.
- 22:21Speaker 2: I love it there because there are no snowboarders. I mean,
- 22:24Speaker 2: I want us to get along. I do. I just
- 22:26Speaker 2: don't understand that. It's like it's like a different ilk.
- 22:28Speaker 1: It's like they just come and it's so rough, and
- 22:31Speaker 1: then you hear them and you can't see them, and
- 22:33Speaker 1: and but it's not it's not the behavior of the
- 22:35Speaker 1: snowboard obviously, it's the behavior of the snowboarder. There's just
- 22:39Speaker 1: a more of all you.
- 22:42Speaker 2: Guys think.
- 22:45Speaker 4: No, then we don't think it. It's just that we
- 22:47Speaker 4: can talk about facts. I mean, it's it's important to
- 22:50Speaker 4: get back to the show. You know. We we're more comfortable.
- 22:54Speaker 4: We walk around like in shoes. You know, we could
- 22:56Speaker 4: wake up, roll out of our bed. It's like slippers
- 22:59Speaker 4: and I could wear those until I go to bed
- 23:01Speaker 4: at night. I just also think that skiers are a
- 23:03Speaker 4: little bit upset and they're just like they're just angry
- 23:07Speaker 4: that they can't do that.
- 23:08Speaker 1: Here we go, here it comes. I don't think we
- 23:11Speaker 1: have a problem with skiers. And now he unleashes, unleashes
- 23:15Speaker 1: this vitriol. How old were you when you went to
- 23:18Speaker 1: your first Olympics?
- 23:19Speaker 4: First Olympics, I was fifteen.
- 23:22Speaker 2: Okay, so that's crazy, and how old were you when
- 23:24Speaker 2: you left home.
- 23:25Speaker 4: I left home when I was sort of pursue it
- 23:28Speaker 4: when my parents decided, well and myself, it was all
- 23:33Speaker 4: of us and my family collectively decided I wanted to
- 23:36Speaker 4: pursue it professionally. I was twelve. I was really young,
- 23:39Speaker 4: so it was a massive commitment from my parents to
- 23:42Speaker 4: have the trust in my coach at the time and
- 23:45Speaker 4: his sister to look after me not only on the mountain,
- 23:48Speaker 4: but off the mountain as well. And through that time
- 23:51Speaker 4: from twelve, I was able to realize a professional career
- 23:55Speaker 4: in the sport. And then by fourteen I was offered
- 23:58Speaker 4: the opportunity to go on wrappers in Australia, which was
- 24:01Speaker 4: a unique special experience and you know, fortunately making it there.
- 24:06Speaker 4: I was fifteen at the time and taking full adventage
- 24:09Speaker 4: of all the free McDonald's in Vancouver.
- 24:12Speaker 1: That's nice that you could take you McDonald's while you're
- 24:14Speaker 1: a teenager growing up and.
- 24:17Speaker 4: The case anymore, No, no, you can't.
- 24:19Speaker 2: As soon as you're an adult. You have to stop that.
- 24:22Speaker 1: But what was it like leaving your family at twelve
- 24:24Speaker 1: years old? I mean that must have been emotional and
- 24:28Speaker 1: for all of you guys, for your siblings, for your parents,
- 24:31Speaker 1: for you.
- 24:32Speaker 4: Yeah, it was hugely emotional. And recently we just made
- 24:37Speaker 4: a documentary and for the first time in a long time,
- 24:41Speaker 4: you know, it was kind of the first time that
- 24:44Speaker 4: I'd really heard everyone else's experience about that. I mean,
- 24:47Speaker 4: it's almost been twenty years since since that moment when
- 24:51Speaker 4: I left Melbourne and going away overseas on my own.
- 24:54Speaker 4: I remember being at the airport and it was just
- 24:57Speaker 4: the floodgates are open. Everyone was very emotional, myself included.
- 25:01Speaker 4: All the way through the flight from Melbourne to Sydney,
- 25:04Speaker 4: I was crying, and then all the way over to Europe.
- 25:07Speaker 4: And yeah, I think that my parents didn't even realize
- 25:10Speaker 4: how emotional I was until we watched the film recently.
- 25:14Speaker 4: And then I didn't realize out their side of the
- 25:17Speaker 4: story until we watched it recently as well. And my
- 25:21Speaker 4: mum said to me the other day, She's like, you know,
- 25:23Speaker 4: if we had have known how upset you were, we
- 25:25Speaker 4: never would have sent you. And I said to Mum,
- 25:27Speaker 4: I was like, yeah, but look what we've realized, Like
- 25:30Speaker 4: as much as much as it was so hard in
- 25:32Speaker 4: the moment, and you know, I do think that all
- 25:35Speaker 4: extraordinary things that you want to try and accomplish takes hardship,
- 25:40Speaker 4: and you know that was mine. But I was able
- 25:42Speaker 4: to travel with great people and I was in a
- 25:46Speaker 4: good and safe environment. It was a challenging time. But
- 25:49Speaker 4: it's nice to reflect on now.
- 25:51Speaker 2: Yeah, I would imagine it just gives you so much. A.
- 25:54Speaker 1: You grew up real quick, right, and B you just
- 25:58Speaker 1: become really independent and self sufficient at a young age,
- 26:01Speaker 1: even if you do have people helping you.
- 26:03Speaker 4: Yeah, definitely. And I think you know even more so
- 26:07Speaker 4: is you know the stigma. It's snowboarding, it's smarking, it's drinking,
- 26:11Speaker 4: it's partying, it's you know, it's it's a wild same
- 26:14Speaker 4: still today as.
- 26:15Speaker 1: I love all things I love and start snowboarding exactly,
- 26:20Speaker 1: you can do that while you ski.
- 26:21Speaker 2: Also, by the way, just.
- 26:25Speaker 4: So my parents isn't there naturally, I mean now I'm
- 26:28Speaker 4: a data would be thinking about that. The environment and
- 26:31Speaker 4: the and the world you got into. It's evolved a
- 26:33Speaker 4: lot since then, but yeah, a lot of factors for
- 26:35Speaker 4: them to think about, which I'm sure and I lost
- 26:37Speaker 4: sleep over.
- 26:38Speaker 1: Yeah, and also I'm sure, and also it's such a
- 26:41Speaker 1: and you're the baby on top of it.
- 26:43Speaker 2: But it's also such a solitary sport.
- 26:45Speaker 5: You know.
- 26:46Speaker 1: It's like, I mean, I guess all these kind of
- 26:48Speaker 1: mountain sports are very solitary unless you're doing you know,
- 26:51Speaker 1: like you know, you're working together. But like, how does
- 26:54Speaker 1: how does that impact your relationship with other athletes, and
- 26:58Speaker 1: how does it impact your relationship with your coaches like
- 27:01Speaker 1: you become is it like would you compare it to
- 27:04Speaker 1: maybe like a tennis player or do you feel more
- 27:06Speaker 1: like you're on more of a team.
- 27:08Speaker 4: Yeah? Sure, so I think the unique thing about snowboarding
- 27:11Speaker 4: or our world, which is very cool, is everyone does
- 27:15Speaker 4: have a good relationship. So you're up there at the
- 27:16Speaker 4: top of the pipe, for example, you know, some might
- 27:20Speaker 4: wish each other luck, like it's a little bit more
- 27:23Speaker 4: call it happy go lucky in the sense of being
- 27:26Speaker 4: a little bit less cutthroat. I'm probably more so on
- 27:29Speaker 4: the other side where I'm up there, I have intention,
- 27:32Speaker 4: I'm not necessarily focused on making friends in that exact moment.
- 27:36Speaker 4: But yeah, I would say that there is a sense
- 27:40Speaker 4: of solitude that you have to be okay with being alone,
- 27:44Speaker 4: be okay with being extremely selfish about what your endeavors are.
- 27:49Speaker 4: You're you're not doing it for anyone. You have to
- 27:51Speaker 4: be so I guess obsessed with the craft to want
- 27:54Speaker 4: to do it for yourself. I've always found my team
- 27:57Speaker 4: is more so you know, my family, other people that
- 27:59Speaker 4: have helped me in my journey. Like that's the kind
- 28:02Speaker 4: of weight that I ride with. Is. I'm doing it
- 28:05Speaker 4: because it wouldn't be satisfying enough for me if I
- 28:07Speaker 4: was just up there with my own intent every week
- 28:09Speaker 4: to just do it for myself. I think my team
- 28:12Speaker 4: is I want to do well for them. But yeah,
- 28:15Speaker 4: you're right, there is. It's a little bit more like
- 28:17Speaker 4: a tennis player rather than a football team for sure.
- 28:21Speaker 2: M Yeah, that's interesting.
- 28:23Speaker 1: Well, I mean you get to travel all over to
- 28:25Speaker 1: the world to train in different places.
- 28:28Speaker 2: What is there anywhere you prefer never to go back to?
- 28:32Speaker 4: Uh? We did World Championships in Georgia a couple of
- 28:39Speaker 4: years ago.
- 28:39Speaker 2: Georgia the country the country?
- 28:41Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, yeah, the country in Georgia. I forget the
- 28:45Speaker 4: name of the mountain. We were very far from anywhere
- 28:48Speaker 4: more so it's actually the country was cool, but this
- 28:51Speaker 4: where we were, the weather conditions it was out there,
- 28:55Speaker 4: so probably there.
- 28:57Speaker 1: I think Georgia is the country where I saw that
- 28:59Speaker 1: video that viral one year with like the gondola where
- 29:03Speaker 1: the gondola chairs were put on backwards and then they
- 29:05Speaker 1: started turning. They they've flipped it and reversed it, and
- 29:08Speaker 1: then people were just flying off of the gondola because
- 29:11Speaker 1: it was coming around like sixteen kilometers an hour.
- 29:15Speaker 4: It was like flippingly sounds like sounds like something I
- 29:19Speaker 4: would have seen when I was there, So it probably was.
- 29:23Speaker 2: Yeah, tell us about your documentary. I want to hear
- 29:26Speaker 2: about that.
- 29:27Speaker 4: Yeah, it was. It's been really fun. I mean, as
- 29:29Speaker 4: the we made the documentary called pipe Dream and came
- 29:34Speaker 4: out on Netflix and December nineteen, so it's still early
- 29:37Speaker 4: days fun, which is yeah, it has been awesome, and yeah,
- 29:42Speaker 4: I think overall it's obviously incredibly rewarding to have been
- 29:46Speaker 4: able to go on such an amazing platform for myself,
- 29:49Speaker 4: but also just for snowbarding. Is really exciting just to
- 29:53Speaker 4: get more people, hopefully more viewers and eyes and everyone
- 29:58Speaker 4: engaged in and what we're doing here in the mountains.
- 30:01Speaker 4: And it was a pretty emotional like process getting it
- 30:05Speaker 4: all together and obviously hearing from my family and other
- 30:09Speaker 4: peers and hearing from other you know, snowboarding competitors present
- 30:13Speaker 4: in the past, and so it's quite cool to hear
- 30:16Speaker 4: a lot of people's perspective which I actually haven't heard before.
- 30:20Speaker 4: So yeah, it was a rewarding process, long process, but
- 30:23Speaker 4: really really cool. And I've never told my story like
- 30:26Speaker 4: that before, which was which was fun to do.
- 30:28Speaker 2: Yeah, I can't wait to see it.
- 30:30Speaker 1: That's that's that must be really interesting to see all
- 30:33Speaker 1: these people talk about you, because I think in life,
- 30:35Speaker 1: you know, we talk about this a lot on this podcast,
- 30:37Speaker 1: like you don't really have time necessarily to reflect on
- 30:41Speaker 1: things like especially when you're going, like you're an athlete,
- 30:43Speaker 1: like you're training all year long.
- 30:45Speaker 2: Literally what you have like a month off a year
- 30:47Speaker 2: or something? Is that right? A month off?
- 30:50Speaker 4: Yeah? Yeah, it's probably say three months because you go
- 30:54Speaker 4: Northern Hemisphere season which starts in October, goes through to
- 30:59Speaker 4: April week of May, then you have June off, then
- 31:02Speaker 4: you you know, then the Southern Hemisphere win to start,
- 31:06Speaker 4: so you're kind of obviously is always constantly chasing winter,
- 31:09Speaker 4: so you get a few months off a year.
- 31:12Speaker 1: Okay, So if you had to describe before we move
- 31:13Speaker 1: on to the next part of that, I just want
- 31:15Speaker 1: to I want to know what you when you are
- 31:18Speaker 1: starting and you're competing, and you're listening to music to
- 31:21Speaker 1: get ready once it starts. What is in your head
- 31:24Speaker 1: if you fall behind by a fraction of a second
- 31:27Speaker 1: or you don't hit the same there's something that you
- 31:29Speaker 1: want to hit. What do you say to yourself in
- 31:31Speaker 1: that moment when something doesn't land like it's supposed to
- 31:34Speaker 1: land one hundred percent?
- 31:36Speaker 4: Honestly, I reflect on in that exact moment, I'd just say,
- 31:43Speaker 4: fuck it, let's just go get it done, because you
- 31:46Speaker 4: can spend so much time thinking about, Oh, I should
- 31:48Speaker 4: have done this better, did I prepare well enough? What's
- 31:51Speaker 4: he going to do? You know, everyone's watching, everyone's expecting.
- 31:55Speaker 4: It's like, that's what I do. I just say effort,
- 31:58Speaker 4: And I think there is this really amazing piece in
- 32:03Speaker 4: being able to say that confidently, because that's like the
- 32:08Speaker 4: best part about what I do is when you can
- 32:11Speaker 4: drop in and just be so present in the moment
- 32:13Speaker 4: with every trick and enjoying the environment. That's what That's
- 32:18Speaker 4: what I try and focus on. It would be in
- 32:19Speaker 4: the case. I'm sure it's similar for you. If you're
- 32:22Speaker 4: going out for a big gig or doing stand up,
- 32:24Speaker 4: it's like, you've prepared so much, you have ten more seconds.
- 32:28Speaker 4: What else can you do other than just be like, like,
- 32:31Speaker 4: let's just get after it and see how we go
- 32:33Speaker 4: and if things happen, it happens, and you're going to
- 32:36Speaker 4: learn from it. And that's what I do. Embrace that
- 32:40Speaker 4: a lot. I think that, you know, you do spend
- 32:41Speaker 4: a lot of time preparing, and you can become way
- 32:44Speaker 4: too meticulous and overthinking and over over everything that you
- 32:48Speaker 4: end up actually giving yourself. You have no satisfaction because
- 32:52Speaker 4: you're like, well, what was all the work for if
- 32:54Speaker 4: I can't just embrace the moment?
- 32:56Speaker 1: So I do focus on that, yeah, yeah, And do
- 32:59Speaker 1: you find that that's different now as you've gotten older,
- 33:01Speaker 1: that you're more in the present moment than you were
- 33:03Speaker 1: when you were competing as a younger person.
- 33:06Speaker 4: Definitely, one hundred percent, I think naturally, you know, still young,
- 33:10Speaker 4: but going through you know time when you're younger, you
- 33:15Speaker 4: do spend and waste so much time thinking about things
- 33:18Speaker 4: that just do not matter at all, whether that's on
- 33:21Speaker 4: the mountain or off the mountain. You know, I did that,
- 33:23Speaker 4: went through that, whereas now I'm very much yeah, very present,
- 33:27Speaker 4: you know, I know what I want to accomplish. I
- 33:30Speaker 4: know who I am as a person. My two feet
- 33:32Speaker 4: are on the ground, and I do lean into that.
- 33:35Speaker 1: Like if you had one weakness that you would that
- 33:38Speaker 1: you would like to work on, or that you were
- 33:39Speaker 1: working on, what would that be.
- 33:41Speaker 4: It's a good question. I My weakness would probably.
- 33:45Speaker 2: Be besides being a snowboarder.
- 33:49Speaker 4: Besides being a snowboater, it would be, to be honest,
- 33:54Speaker 4: It's still it's funny like even after having found such
- 33:57Speaker 4: a groove in you know, maybe whatever you do find
- 34:00Speaker 4: success as in my case, being able to compete really
- 34:03Speaker 4: well and do well in advance, is still belief. Like you,
- 34:08Speaker 4: I still have moments where you know you prepare so
- 34:11Speaker 4: well and you're like, all I have to do is
- 34:16Speaker 4: show up and put my best foot forward and land
- 34:17Speaker 4: a really amazing run and it all you know, it'll
- 34:20Speaker 4: go my way where well enough and in tune enough
- 34:23Speaker 4: that we know when we have the tools to win.
- 34:24Speaker 4: If you don't, you know where you're kind of at.
- 34:27Speaker 4: And I still sometimes I battle with that belief of
- 34:32Speaker 4: can I actually realize now what I'm trying to accomplish
- 34:36Speaker 4: and have I taken the right steps to get there?
- 34:39Speaker 4: So I would say that that's something that I continue
- 34:42Speaker 4: to work on. But because as much as I still
- 34:46Speaker 4: I am working on, I also think it's kind of
- 34:48Speaker 4: my blessing because then I don't take advantage of any
- 34:51Speaker 4: day every opportunity is an opportunity. I try and squeeze
- 34:55Speaker 4: every opportunity that I can training, And maybe that's that
- 34:59Speaker 4: lack of belief that it makes me go overboard in
- 35:02Speaker 4: term with my preparation my training. So I don't know,
- 35:05Speaker 4: it's probably whether it's a weakness or maybe it could
- 35:08Speaker 4: might not be, but that would be right, Yeah.
- 35:10Speaker 1: I mean circling back to this subject or the like
- 35:12Speaker 1: the topic of reflection, like I always think, you know,
- 35:15Speaker 1: if there's something big, high stakes in my life which
- 35:18Speaker 1: is obviously very different than yours, but like I always think, okay,
- 35:21Speaker 1: think about all the things that led to you being here, Like,
- 35:23Speaker 1: think about all of where you came from. So like
- 35:26Speaker 1: when I talk about reflection, like I know, as an athlete,
- 35:28Speaker 1: you're you know, you're moving so fast, you're training so much,
- 35:31Speaker 1: you have limited time off or limited off season, and
- 35:35Speaker 1: it's like you you really have to take note of
- 35:37Speaker 1: where you began and where you've come, how far you've
- 35:40Speaker 1: come you know, as a reminder for anyone really in
- 35:43Speaker 1: any situation, it's like, oh, I'm the one who got
- 35:46Speaker 1: myself all the way here, obviously with help of coaches
- 35:48Speaker 1: and support from your family, et cetera, but to and
- 35:52Speaker 1: your wife, but also.
- 35:53Speaker 2: To really remember, like how you know how far you've come?
- 35:57Speaker 4: Yeah, definitely. And I think that the one I always
- 36:02Speaker 4: sit on a lot is the courage. I think everyone
- 36:05Speaker 4: we all have passions, we all have something that we
- 36:08Speaker 4: want to realize in our lives. And I feel very
- 36:12Speaker 4: fortunate that I'm one of the ones that was had
- 36:14Speaker 4: the courage to actually continue and go for it, particularly
- 36:18Speaker 4: with you know, the setbacks that you have when you're young.
- 36:21Speaker 4: And I think that's across a lot of people always
- 36:24Speaker 4: ask me like, oh, who do you look up to?
- 36:26Speaker 4: Who do you know admire in your life? And to
- 36:28Speaker 4: be honest, I don't have one person. It's always people
- 36:32Speaker 4: that I look at and I hear their story and
- 36:34Speaker 4: I hear about their adversity and their courage who actually
- 36:37Speaker 4: pursue what they want to do in their life. And
- 36:39Speaker 4: that's hard. So I do focus on that too. Is
- 36:43Speaker 4: the courage. Takes a lot of courage to actually commit
- 36:46Speaker 4: to your passion in life. And I've done that, which
- 36:49Speaker 4: has been rewarding and fortunately worked out. But yeah, yeah.
- 36:54Speaker 2: People always say that to me. Who do you look
- 36:56Speaker 2: up to?
- 36:56Speaker 4: Like?
- 36:56Speaker 2: Who is your favorite?
- 36:58Speaker 1: I was like, well, Bill Cosby, but that didn't really
- 37:00Speaker 1: work out for me, So I have to stop mentioning it.
- 37:02Speaker 2: That's not it's not a hero anymore.
- 37:04Speaker 1: Anyway, We're gonna take a break and we're gonna be
- 37:06Speaker 1: right back with Scottie James. Okay, And we're back with
- 37:14Speaker 1: Scotty James.
- 37:15Speaker 2: Okay.
- 37:16Speaker 1: Scotty James is on his way to the Olympics. So
- 37:18Speaker 1: and this is not his first time at the Olympics.
- 37:20Speaker 1: This is your fifth time.
- 37:21Speaker 2: At the Olympics.
- 37:22Speaker 4: Fifth Yes, vintage.
- 37:24Speaker 1: Yeah, vintage, fifth time, my gosh. Okay, So we now
- 37:28Speaker 1: we take questions from caller Scotty.
- 37:30Speaker 2: Are you ready?
- 37:31Speaker 1: I'm ready, You seem ready, You seem ready, yes, Catherine, what.
- 37:34Speaker 2: Do we got?
- 37:35Speaker 5: All? Right?
- 37:35Speaker 3: Well, we're gonna start with a couple skiing snowboarding questions,
- 37:38Speaker 3: but then move on to some interpersonal, juicy stuff.
- 37:41Speaker 1: So then we're gonna move on to some guynecology questions
- 37:44Speaker 1: just to keep you comfortable exactly right in your Wheelhouse.
- 37:47Speaker 3: So we're gonna start with a brand news segment, which
- 37:49Speaker 3: is our one drink question. And this is just a
- 37:52Speaker 3: little quickie. So our listener says, Dear Chelsea, this is
- 37:56Speaker 3: not an incredibly deep question.
- 37:58Speaker 2: It is about skiing.
- 38:00Speaker 3: I grew up snowboarding and decided I wanted to switch
- 38:02Speaker 3: to skiing after college. For longevity purposes. I visualize a
- 38:06Speaker 3: fifty year old version of myself who is a badass
- 38:08Speaker 3: gear and spends a third of my year and tell
- 38:10Speaker 3: you're ride.
- 38:11Speaker 2: Here are my questions.
- 38:12Speaker 3: One what age did you start spending serious time skiing?
- 38:16Speaker 2: Do you think thirty one is too late now?
- 38:18Speaker 4: Two?
- 38:19Speaker 3: How long did it take you to feel confident on blacks?
- 38:22Speaker 3: With age, my fearlessness has faded and I'm frustrated with
- 38:25Speaker 3: how much hesitation I have going down the mountain. How
- 38:27Speaker 3: many lessons did you have before you felt really capable
- 38:30Speaker 3: and confident to handle all terrain?
- 38:33Speaker 2: Great questions. I love it. First of all, I didn't
- 38:35Speaker 2: start getting.
- 38:36Speaker 1: Into skiing like seriously, seriously until I was like thirty nine.
- 38:40Speaker 1: I mean, I skied for in my thirties, but I
- 38:42Speaker 1: didn't start like taking like actual private instruction which are
- 38:46Speaker 1: pretty expensive.
- 38:47Speaker 2: So if you can afford that, great, But.
- 38:49Speaker 1: If not, your fearlessness gets replaced by competency. I would say,
- 38:54Speaker 1: you know, what you lose in fearlessness, you gain incompetency
- 38:57Speaker 1: and capability. So the more time you spend and on
- 39:00Speaker 1: the mountain, and the more runs you do in bad conditions,
- 39:03Speaker 1: in good conditions, in powder and groomers, all of it,
- 39:07Speaker 1: you become a better skier. And I like, I'm a
- 39:10Speaker 1: really good skier now. I could ski down pretty much anything.
- 39:13Speaker 1: My friends took me down something like two days ago
- 39:15Speaker 1: that I was like, if I had done that ten
- 39:17Speaker 1: years ago, I would never have taken I would never
- 39:19Speaker 1: have made it right. I would have been like, no way,
- 39:21Speaker 1: So that would have felt really good. But you know,
- 39:24Speaker 1: thirty one, Yeah, you're down. You could do whatever it takes,
- 39:27Speaker 1: like I think it takes a good one hundred days
- 39:29Speaker 1: on a mount but you want to get instruction from
- 39:31Speaker 1: someone who knows what they're doing so you don't create
- 39:34Speaker 1: really bad habits and then beat up your body, right Scotty.
- 39:38Speaker 4: Whoever asked the question lost me it. I transferred to skiing.
- 39:42Speaker 1: So my comment, first of all, and also to our
- 39:46Speaker 1: writer in you're doing the right thing by leaving snowboarding
- 39:50Speaker 1: and transferring to skiing. Scotty and I are from two
- 39:53Speaker 1: different schools of thought obviously, and I support you one
- 39:56Speaker 1: hundred percent.
- 39:57Speaker 2: And that's it. Problem solved, all right? It cheers.
- 40:01Speaker 4: Is that our one trick? Yes, Scotty and I can
- 40:05Speaker 4: confirm Chelsea is actually looking at potentially you told me
- 40:09Speaker 4: earlier you're looking at doing some instructing at a local resort.
- 40:12Speaker 4: So maybe, right, maybe you could take that on.
- 40:15Speaker 2: I got to get my level ones first. I gotta
- 40:17Speaker 2: get my level three and four.
- 40:19Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 40:19Speaker 1: Double blacks, Yeah, it takes a while to get down there.
- 40:22Speaker 1: But by the way, once you get good at skiing
- 40:23Speaker 1: and double black you don't even look at whether it's
- 40:25Speaker 1: black or blue or it doesn't matter. You're fine.
- 40:29Speaker 4: It's true now that to second you, you're right. I
- 40:32Speaker 4: think the more consistency you have and the more often
- 40:35Speaker 4: you do it and your curiosity is the way you
- 40:39Speaker 4: will win. So go for it. But you should stand
- 40:41Speaker 4: on board.
- 40:42Speaker 2: Yeah all right.
- 40:44Speaker 3: Well, our first caller today is Jess, and she is
- 40:47Speaker 3: calling in from Vancouver. So she says, dear Chelsea, I've
- 40:53Speaker 3: fallen up. This is another skiing question, but it will
- 40:56Speaker 3: make sense to you, Scottie. So I've fallen out of
- 40:59Speaker 3: love with skiing. Growing up, some of my best memories
- 41:02Speaker 3: were spent on the slopes, and I chose a grad
- 41:04Speaker 3: school partly based on proximity to a hill. Post COVID,
- 41:08Speaker 3: I took a break from my studies and moved to Queenstown,
- 41:10Speaker 3: New Zealand to work on the ski field. I got
- 41:12Speaker 3: paid to ski every day and loved it. Wanting to improve,
- 41:16Speaker 3: I signed up for a ski instructor exam. I really
- 41:18Speaker 3: enjoyed developing my technique, and Chelsea, I too, ended up
- 41:22Speaker 3: sleeping with my ski instructor.
- 41:23Speaker 2: We're now married.
- 41:25Speaker 3: My husband is a highly skilled now sports professional and
- 41:27Speaker 3: skiing is central to his world. But within that world
- 41:30Speaker 3: I often don't feel welcome. When we're with his friends,
- 41:33Speaker 3: conversation revolves almost exclusively around ski technique and criticism of
- 41:38Speaker 3: the industry, and I largely feel excluded. Being surrounded by
- 41:42Speaker 3: constant evaluation has made me wonder what he thinks about
- 41:45Speaker 3: my skiing, what his peers think too. It's such a
- 41:48Speaker 3: visible sport, and I've seen the ego driven underside of it.
- 41:51Speaker 3: Over time, I've come to associate skiing with feeling inferior
- 41:54Speaker 3: when my husband and I do ski together, the days
- 41:56Speaker 3: have slowly morphed into being about filming him for YouTube
- 41:59Speaker 3: and marketing his way business. I've become the cliche. I've
- 42:02Speaker 3: become the cliche Instagram girlfriend. We moved to BC a
- 42:06Speaker 3: couple of years ago and have incredible skiing available to us.
- 42:10Speaker 3: We've had conversations about this, but I find myself sabotaging
- 42:14Speaker 3: ski days by offering just a film without being asked,
- 42:16Speaker 3: just to avoid skiing myself.
- 42:18Speaker 2: Honestly, I'd rather be in the lodge with a margarita. Chelsea.
- 42:21Speaker 3: How can I build my ski self esteem and fall
- 42:23Speaker 3: back in love with the mountains again?
- 42:25Speaker 2: Thanks so much, Jess.
- 42:27Speaker 1: Well, Jess, it feels like you got to find a
- 42:29Speaker 1: group of like women to ski with so that you
- 42:31Speaker 1: don't feel like that you got a new I mean,
- 42:33Speaker 1: it doesn't even have to be women. It just has
- 42:34Speaker 1: to be people that aren't that judgy or so psychotically
- 42:37Speaker 1: talking about skiing all the time.
- 42:40Speaker 2: That's not fun either.
- 42:40Speaker 1: Nobody wants to talk about technique all the time unless
- 42:43Speaker 1: you're Scotty and you're on your way to the Olympics
- 42:45Speaker 1: and that's all you have.
- 42:46Speaker 2: To talk about.
- 42:47Speaker 4: Even I don't do that, I promise.
- 42:50Speaker 1: Yeah, actually go back and tell them Scotty James doesn't
- 42:52Speaker 1: even talk about it as much as you guys do,
- 42:54Speaker 1: and he's competing in the Olympics.
- 42:57Speaker 5: Yeah. When I was in New Zealand, we had worked
- 43:00Speaker 5: in the industry a little bit and I found some
- 43:02Speaker 5: group of women that were a little bit less intense
- 43:04Speaker 5: about it, so it was really fun. But I haven't
- 43:07Speaker 5: quite found that yere in BC and Canada. But yeah,
- 43:10Speaker 5: I think that's a great idea.
- 43:11Speaker 2: But you know what, you could find ski groups online.
- 43:14Speaker 1: You know there's like I'm in a ski group on Saturdays,
- 43:16Speaker 1: like Club Link at Whistler Black Home where I ski.
- 43:19Speaker 1: You know, we have a guy that just cuts the
- 43:21Speaker 1: lines for us, you know when it's busy and like
- 43:23Speaker 1: takes us.
- 43:23Speaker 2: It's fun. You can do that.
- 43:25Speaker 1: You can join and then Cyprus and Grouse are in Vancouver.
- 43:29Speaker 2: I mean that's so much fun night skiing. I love that.
- 43:32Speaker 2: But yeah, I would just change the channel. Like, first
- 43:34Speaker 2: of all, stop.
- 43:35Speaker 1: Going and recording your boyfriend husband whatever he is, Like,
- 43:38Speaker 1: why what are.
- 43:39Speaker 2: You as assistant? I mean that's not fun for anyone.
- 43:44Speaker 2: I mean, do you have children, No, not yet exactly but.
- 43:47Speaker 1: That's why you shouldn't been filming anybody, because he's an
- 43:50Speaker 1: adult man. I mean, you know, Scotty, what do you
- 43:54Speaker 1: have to say to this anything?
- 43:56Speaker 4: I would say. Firstly, you welcome over to our side
- 43:59Speaker 4: any day of the week. The snowboarding can get you
- 44:01Speaker 4: some snowboards, yeah we can. We can bring you in.
- 44:05Speaker 4: It'll be a warm welcome. Secondly, it's actually really interesting.
- 44:09Speaker 4: My ears pricked up when you said that you sometimes
- 44:12Speaker 4: don't feel like you fit in into conversation. It doesn't
- 44:15Speaker 4: matter your level. I have that same feeling in my world.
- 44:19Speaker 4: Sometimes there's maybe a certain type of person or a
- 44:23Speaker 4: certain type of you know, way that people perceive snowboarders
- 44:27Speaker 4: or skis in this case to be and if you
- 44:29Speaker 4: don't fit that mold, you don't really feel like you're
- 44:32Speaker 4: a part of what they're doing. And it's you know,
- 44:36Speaker 4: even for me, I always got a bit insecure about that.
- 44:39Speaker 4: But I think that the second that you realize, I
- 44:42Speaker 4: guess who you are and what you're doing and why
- 44:44Speaker 4: you're actually even out there. Like firstly, you're just wanting
- 44:47Speaker 4: to have fun, and that's what anyone should be up
- 44:49Speaker 4: there doing. If you're not pursuing it professionally, I think,
- 44:53Speaker 4: just find a bit of sanity and that you actually
- 44:56Speaker 4: enjoy it. And if people start to have a go
- 44:58Speaker 4: at you about not being on that level of knowledge,
- 45:01Speaker 4: like he gives a shit, it doesn't matter, like at all.
- 45:05Speaker 5: It is quite a made up sport, I suppose to,
- 45:09Speaker 5: you know, unless you're in a gate and you're trying
- 45:11Speaker 5: to get from A to B really quickly, or you're
- 45:13Speaker 5: being judged on specific criteria.
- 45:15Speaker 4: Is made up.
- 45:16Speaker 5: So I do try to tell myself that, like, it
- 45:17Speaker 5: doesn't really matter what I look like. I'm still having
- 45:20Speaker 5: fun and that's the point. But but yeah, there's definitely
- 45:22Speaker 5: a little bit of ego and I think that comparison
- 45:25Speaker 5: that yeah.
- 45:26Speaker 2: But that's men. I mean that's why, like don't sky
- 45:28Speaker 2: with a group of men, Like that's just not fun.
- 45:31Speaker 2: You know, you have solution.
- 45:32Speaker 4: Yeah, it's like one exceptions.
- 45:35Speaker 1: Yeah there are Scott, You're seem like a really nice guy,
- 45:38Speaker 1: but again, you know, still a snowboarder, a world champion,
- 45:41Speaker 1: but a snowboarder nonetheless, So you just got to get
- 45:44Speaker 1: you got to change the channel and decide who you're
- 45:46Speaker 1: skiing with and just be honest with your partner and
- 45:48Speaker 1: be like, listen, it's not fun. I don't feel like
- 45:50Speaker 1: I want to have fun on skis. I'm like losing
- 45:52Speaker 1: my love. Have you expressed that to him, by the way.
- 45:54Speaker 6: Yeah, we've We've talked about it a bit.
- 45:56Speaker 5: I think the worst season was last season, just I
- 45:59Speaker 5: didn't actually get as day to ski to myself, But
- 46:02Speaker 5: he knows how I feel. The issue is that he's
- 46:05Speaker 5: trying to make YouTube his business, and I'm kind of
- 46:09Speaker 5: tied into that as well, right, Like, he doesn't really
- 46:11Speaker 5: have anyone else to go out with him, so sometimes
- 46:14Speaker 5: sometimes I kind of get pulled into that. But I
- 46:17Speaker 5: guess trying to make that boundary or draw that line.
- 46:19Speaker 2: A college student, find a college student to do that.
- 46:22Speaker 6: Yeah, okay, that's a good idea.
- 46:23Speaker 1: Great idea, And I wasn't going to say that, but
- 46:25Speaker 1: I was going to say, you can also do you know,
- 46:26Speaker 1: you do something for him and then he does, you know,
- 46:29Speaker 1: and then okay, in exchange for that, you get to
- 46:31Speaker 1: go skiing alone, or you go skiing with a group
- 46:34Speaker 1: of people, or you go skiing and he's not allowed
- 46:35Speaker 1: to talk about skiing for the entire day. You know,
- 46:38Speaker 1: like figure out what the compromise is while you're skiing.
- 46:42Speaker 2: He's you're not allowed to talk about skiing. Wall we're skiing.
- 46:47Speaker 4: It's one margarite, I mean, come on, yeah, oh good negotiation.
- 46:51Speaker 1: What is your drink of choice on the mountain, Scotty,
- 46:53Speaker 1: When you can have a drink when you are celebrating,
- 46:56Speaker 1: what is it?
- 46:56Speaker 4: Good question after like an event? Probably champagne.
- 47:01Speaker 1: Actually yeah, I mean that's because they're spraying it all
- 47:03Speaker 1: over you so readily available.
- 47:06Speaker 4: Yeah yeah, I like.
- 47:07Speaker 1: A moscow mule on the mountain, or I like a
- 47:09Speaker 1: stiff margarita because I like to have a margarita juice
- 47:12Speaker 1: boost at around eleven. If I go out around nine,
- 47:14Speaker 1: I like to stop, have a little margarita at eleventh,
- 47:17Speaker 1: and then.
- 47:17Speaker 2: Go back out and have a little more bravery.
- 47:19Speaker 4: This is this is the Olympics of Skiing drinking knowledge
- 47:23Speaker 4: by Chelsea.
- 47:24Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 47:24Speaker 1: Yeah, so there you go, Jess, and hopefully I'll run
- 47:27Speaker 1: into you one of these mountains.
- 47:29Speaker 5: Yeah yeah, we're going to go into the interior in
- 47:31Speaker 5: a few weeks in February.
- 47:32Speaker 2: So fun.
- 47:33Speaker 1: But yeah, yeah, oh good, Okay, well yeah, but don't
- 47:36Speaker 1: lose your love, you know, if you love skiing, like
- 47:38Speaker 1: make sure you like you've got to like garden your passions,
- 47:41Speaker 1: you know what I mean, just like you have to
- 47:42Speaker 1: like garden your relationship. You have to like make sure
- 47:45Speaker 1: you do what you want to do and enjoy something
- 47:47Speaker 1: that you love that you like kind of got ruined
- 47:50Speaker 1: by somebody else.
- 47:50Speaker 2: Like don't let that, don't let them take that away.
- 47:53Speaker 1: You know, go and be like true to yourself and
- 47:57Speaker 1: get back out there.
- 47:58Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 47:58Speaker 5: I think the idea of finding women to ski with
- 48:00Speaker 5: is a good one.
- 48:01Speaker 1: Yeahs always if you're a woman. I like, you know,
- 48:04Speaker 1: skiing with women. I like women guides every I'm like,
- 48:06Speaker 1: if she could move her body like that, then I
- 48:08Speaker 1: can move my body like that. You know, it's easier
- 48:11Speaker 1: sometimes with a woman when you are a woman.
- 48:13Speaker 6: Yeah, that's a good point. Okay, thanks to think about it.
- 48:16Speaker 6: Thank you guys.
- 48:17Speaker 2: Okay, great, thanks for going. Take care.
- 48:19Speaker 6: Thanks.
- 48:20Speaker 2: Thanks.
- 48:20Speaker 1: I would love to do and like a thing where
- 48:22Speaker 1: they had to with spectators had to compete drinking while
- 48:25Speaker 1: at the Olympics and then interviewing the athletes after who
- 48:29Speaker 1: could do that the best?
- 48:30Speaker 2: And that would be me. I would now lose my shit.
- 48:33Speaker 1: The more alcohol in my system, the more clarity I get.
- 48:37Speaker 4: I mean, I think that's a fair pitch.
- 48:39Speaker 2: I do too. Actually, I don't know why I'm not
- 48:41Speaker 2: doing that. I don't know.
- 48:42Speaker 1: They must have hired somebody else, somebody more reliable. Okay, Catherine,
- 48:47Speaker 1: what else? What else do we got?
- 48:48Speaker 5: Well?
- 48:49Speaker 3: Our next caller is Rebecca. She says, you're Chelsea. I
- 48:52Speaker 3: am a forty two year old who moved to a
- 48:54Speaker 3: Greek island on my own just over a year ago.
- 48:57Speaker 3: After nannying and waiting tables my whole life, I decided
- 49:00Speaker 3: it was time to live my dream and stop waiting
- 49:02Speaker 3: for my person for my life to begin. So I
- 49:05Speaker 3: use my savings to do the Golden Visa and buy
- 49:07Speaker 3: property in Greece, while giving myself a few years to
- 49:10Speaker 3: really give my all to my business and gain clients.
- 49:13Speaker 3: I know it will take some time to support this
- 49:14Speaker 3: life financially. With a savvy budget, I can support myself
- 49:17Speaker 3: with savings for another year until my business picks up,
- 49:20Speaker 3: or I have to go back to the US and
- 49:22Speaker 3: find another nanny job. Recently, I got on a dating
- 49:25Speaker 3: app and found a really great guy who's also an expat.
- 49:28Speaker 3: Our relationship is quite new, but we're very compatible and
- 49:32Speaker 3: we're falling fast for each other. He's in a very
- 49:35Speaker 3: different financial situation. He recently retired. He's in his fifties,
- 49:39Speaker 3: with plenty of money, and is constantly taking lavish vacations
- 49:42Speaker 3: all over the world. At first, it sounds amazing, right,
- 49:45Speaker 3: But when I really think about it, I'm not in
- 49:46Speaker 3: a position to actually join him on these vacations. Even
- 49:49Speaker 3: though I can work from anywhere. Just paying for one
- 49:51Speaker 3: splurgey meal on a trip would cost the same as
- 49:53Speaker 3: my budget for two weeks here. So my question is
- 49:57Speaker 3: how and when do I approach this money conversation. I
- 50:00Speaker 3: just turned down trips with him. He's currently angling for
- 50:02Speaker 3: a getaway to the Maldives. We're only six weeks in,
- 50:05Speaker 3: so is it too soon to talk finances?
- 50:08Speaker 2: Rebecca Well, I mean, hi, Rebecca, how are you?
- 50:12Speaker 5: Hi?
- 50:13Speaker 2: Hi?
- 50:13Speaker 1: This is our special guest, Scottie James. He's heading to
- 50:16Speaker 1: the Olympics. He's the best snowboarder of all time. So
- 50:19Speaker 1: you came to the right place because he's got lots
- 50:21Speaker 1: of answers for you.
- 50:23Speaker 2: Has it come up yet? Have you guys been on
- 50:25Speaker 2: a vacation?
- 50:26Speaker 1: I mean, usually the person that wants to go on
- 50:28Speaker 1: the vacation that badly is happy to pay for it,
- 50:31Speaker 1: but have have you guys been on a vacation like
- 50:33Speaker 1: that together, like a nice vacation.
- 50:35Speaker 7: Yet Yeah, we went to Vienna for New Year's He
- 50:39Speaker 7: paid for most of it, but I had to pay
- 50:41Speaker 7: for my plane ticket, which wasn't that much, but it's
- 50:44Speaker 7: still significant for me. So I just kind of have
- 50:46Speaker 7: to measure, like how many times can I do that.
- 50:48Speaker 7: We're going to Santorini in a couple weeks, and again
- 50:51Speaker 7: he's paying for the trip, but I'm paying for my
- 50:53Speaker 7: plane ticket, and so yeah, it's you know, I'm not
- 50:58Speaker 7: really sure how to I'm not great at time talking
- 51:00Speaker 7: about it yet, and I'm not sure because it's so new,
- 51:03Speaker 7: what the best way to do it is.
- 51:04Speaker 1: Yeah, well I don't think for Yeah, I know it's
- 51:06Speaker 1: not a sexy conversation to talk about finances, especially when
- 51:09Speaker 1: they're like you're strapped for them, But I think you
- 51:11Speaker 1: should just have a very honest conversation and just let
- 51:14Speaker 1: him know, like what your situation is. Be like, I'm sorry,
- 51:17Speaker 1: I'm not as established like these vacations really, Like even
- 51:19Speaker 1: the plane ticket is a lot for me, that's like
- 51:21Speaker 1: my budget for however, I mean, plane tickets are fairly
- 51:24Speaker 1: if you're in Greece and you're going to Santorini.
- 51:26Speaker 2: Obviously that's a little bit more affordable.
- 51:29Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, that's true. That's true.
- 51:31Speaker 7: It's more that they that they add up and yeah,
- 51:35Speaker 7: and also just things like this summer, I don't like
- 51:37Speaker 7: to be here for August because it's too hot and
- 51:40Speaker 7: too crowded. So like, if I were single, I would
- 51:43Speaker 7: be looking for a house swap or looking to house
- 51:45Speaker 7: it like something free that I could do.
- 51:48Speaker 6: Like, he keeps talking.
- 51:48Speaker 7: About going to the Maldives, and he keeps like hinting,
- 51:51Speaker 7: like do you want to come or not? He has
- 51:53Speaker 7: actually directly said that, but he said, like, do you
- 51:55Speaker 7: like the Maldives?
- 51:56Speaker 6: Do you think you'd ever want to come? So it's
- 51:58Speaker 6: like we're not quite there.
- 51:59Speaker 7: Yet to like plan that, But then I need to
- 52:02Speaker 7: also be planning my my life just in case we
- 52:05Speaker 7: don't go.
- 52:06Speaker 1: But I think you should enter this card, Listen, Scott,
- 52:08Speaker 1: he's married to an heiress, so he's in the same
- 52:10Speaker 1: boat basically as you are. Okay, but I think you
- 52:18Speaker 1: should just bring a lightness to this conversation and be like, Listen,
- 52:21Speaker 1: I am excited about all of this potential, and I
- 52:24Speaker 1: know we're very new but I just really.
- 52:26Speaker 2: Want to be transparent.
- 52:27Speaker 1: This should be like an in person conversation about where
- 52:30Speaker 1: you are financially, what your plan is. Like everything you
- 52:33Speaker 1: just mentioned in your letter is worthwhile knowledge. Like you
- 52:36Speaker 1: move to Greece, you have a year to set up
- 52:37Speaker 1: your business, you know, or before you have to go
- 52:40Speaker 1: back to the States, which you definitely don't want to
- 52:41Speaker 1: do right now. So you, like, you know, just be
- 52:44Speaker 1: very transparent without asking or expecting, you know what I mean,
- 52:48Speaker 1: just saying like I want to figure this out together,
- 52:51Speaker 1: and I don't expect you to pay for everything. I
- 52:53Speaker 1: want to contribute, So what's the best way I can
- 52:56Speaker 1: do that. Maybe there's a different way that you can
- 52:58Speaker 1: contribute that isn't fiduciary, you.
- 53:00Speaker 2: Know, like, well maybe you can, you know, I don't know.
- 53:03Speaker 1: Maybe you can be involved in the planning more, or
- 53:05Speaker 1: you could pick up the restaurants or do some more
- 53:07Speaker 1: of the legwork, you know, figure out a way to
- 53:09Speaker 1: contribute if he's cool with it. But I think you
- 53:12Speaker 1: should just you know, don't make it dire, just say hey,
- 53:15Speaker 1: I want to just start talking about this. I know
- 53:17Speaker 1: it's not a sexy conversation, but I want to be transparent,
- 53:19Speaker 1: and I don't want to like take advantage of this situation,
- 53:22Speaker 1: you know what I mean, just be very honest. I
- 53:24Speaker 1: think that gets the ball rolling in the right kind
- 53:26Speaker 1: of candor and transparency. Especially at the beginning of a relationship.
- 53:31Speaker 1: It's important to say those things.
- 53:33Speaker 6: Yeah, okay, Yeah, that's really helpful.
- 53:36Speaker 3: Yeah, and then also giving him the option of, like,
- 53:39Speaker 3: if it doesn't work for you know, you to spring
- 53:41Speaker 3: for the vacation, like I'm totally cool to do a
- 53:43Speaker 3: house swap, and like I'll see in a month.
- 53:44Speaker 2: When you get back from the Mamaldi's.
- 53:47Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, threaten him.
- 53:51Speaker 2: Who knows who I might meet that time? Yeah, who
- 53:53Speaker 2: knows well to meet while you go to the Maldives.
- 53:58Speaker 2: That always.
- 53:58Speaker 4: Congrats on having the courage to move to try something different.
- 54:04Speaker 4: I think that I think that takes a lot of carage.
- 54:06Speaker 4: So respect for doing that.
- 54:08Speaker 2: Oh thank you. Yeah, it does.
- 54:10Speaker 1: It does to get up and move to someplace where
- 54:12Speaker 1: you don't know anyone and so far away, Like I
- 54:15Speaker 1: love that move and I think you'll you'll get rewarded.
- 54:17Speaker 1: I mean, there's Greece is always always a good place
- 54:20Speaker 1: to be.
- 54:22Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, I love it here so far.
- 54:24Speaker 1: Okay, well, good good luck and yeah, let us know
- 54:27Speaker 1: how that conversation goes.
- 54:28Speaker 2: We like follow up calls.
- 54:30Speaker 6: Okay, awesome, Yeah, thank you so much, Thanks Rebecca. Okay, bye,
- 54:35Speaker 6: bye bye.
- 54:36Speaker 1: We're gonna take a quick break and we're gonna be
- 54:38Speaker 1: right back to wrap up with Scotty James.
- 54:43Speaker 2: And we're back with Scotty James.
- 54:46Speaker 1: Scotty, do you spend a lot of time on the
- 54:47Speaker 1: mountain when you're not like, do you spend any time
- 54:49Speaker 1: on the mountain when you're not training?
- 54:51Speaker 4: Yeah? I would say when my family's around, yes, Like
- 54:55Speaker 4: my dad loves snowboarding, so he's always keen to be
- 54:59Speaker 4: on the hill. He's the guy that's up at the
- 55:02Speaker 4: lift line first and waiting for the chairlift to open.
- 55:05Speaker 4: So I definitely when he's around, I'm up there just
- 55:08Speaker 4: for fun and to go cruise around. But to be honest,
- 55:11Speaker 4: during a competition week, I'm not on the hill too
- 55:13Speaker 4: much other than competing and training.
- 55:16Speaker 2: What is your meal right before you compete?
- 55:19Speaker 4: I love spaghetti bolonnes. Yeah, I just I mean probably
- 55:24Speaker 4: the night before, because if I had it right before
- 55:26Speaker 4: I compete might be a little on the heavy side.
- 55:28Speaker 4: I'm already heavy as I explained earlier. So throwing around
- 55:33Speaker 4: spaghetti bolonnies in my stomach doing flips is not a
- 55:36Speaker 4: great outcome, but yeah, probably that I would say.
- 55:41Speaker 1: Yeah, it's nice to have to eat spaghetti bolonniers for
- 55:43Speaker 1: your profession, since you need to carbload and you need
- 55:46Speaker 1: to get your body stored up.
- 55:48Speaker 2: It's nice to have that kind of responsibility.
- 55:50Speaker 4: True, Yeah, this is true.
- 55:53Speaker 2: And will your family Your family's going to be at
- 55:55Speaker 2: the Olympics.
- 55:55Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, so the fan will be there, which will
- 55:58Speaker 4: be really nice. They I would see. With the last
- 56:01Speaker 4: Olympics was in China, the country was still closed, so
- 56:05Speaker 4: it was pretty interesting experience. It was like just us
- 56:09Speaker 4: and robots. Didn't really feel like an Olympics and robots
- 56:12Speaker 4: and it was strange. So it wasn't like I didn't
- 56:15Speaker 4: really feel that the energy last time. So it'd be
- 56:18Speaker 4: nice to have. You know, Italy will be great. Yeah,
- 56:21Speaker 4: Italy is a country spaghetti bowl and AI's on hand
- 56:25Speaker 4: obviously whenever, but it'll be massed out of family. That'll
- 56:29Speaker 4: be good.
- 56:30Speaker 1: Okay, Well, I cannot wait to see you win a
- 56:32Speaker 1: gold medal, so we will be watching. It was delightful
- 56:36Speaker 1: speaking with you. I hope I get to meet you
- 56:38Speaker 1: someday in person. Maybe i'll pop by the Olympics this year.
- 56:41Speaker 1: Who knows, anything's possible.
- 56:43Speaker 4: If I get the job done, We'll promise you one thing.
- 56:47Speaker 4: We're going snowboarding together. Let me shake on it. Well okay, yeah,
- 56:53Speaker 4: I'm going to take a photo of it and be
- 56:55Speaker 4: like she's transitioned.
- 56:58Speaker 1: Yes, transition more ways than one. Thank you, Scotti, thanks
- 57:03Speaker 1: for being here.
- 57:04Speaker 4: Thank you guys so much for having me appreciate gay.
