- 0:24light on. Welcome to the Slippery Slope
- 0:28podcast. I'm Jay Fallon.
- 0:29So today I want to, I want to dive into a topic that it might
- 0:33be uncomfortable for some. It certainly is was a little
- 0:36uncomfortable when I first started thinking about it and
- 0:39how I want to talk about it. So even though it might be
- 0:42uncomfortable, I think it's absolutely necessary if we're
- 0:45going to understand the world honestly, look at the world
- 0:49honestly. So the topic that I want to look
- 0:52at is why do so many Islamic majority economies fail even
- 0:58though they sit on top of enormous natural wealth?
- 1:02So a recent video titled Why All Islamic Economies are a Total
- 1:06Disaster lays out some striking statistics and patterns.
- 1:11According to the video, the Islamic world controls 70% of
- 1:15the planet's proven oil reserves and roughly 1/4 of the world's
- 1:20population, yet contributes 9%, 9% of global GDP.
- 1:28Now I'll put the links up to any videos and that that I'll put,
- 1:31I'll have the links in the description.
- 1:33So I'll repeat what I just said. It says the Islamic world
- 1:36controls 70% of the planets proven oil reserves and roughly
- 1:411/4 of the world's population, yet contributes less than 9% of
- 1:48global GDP. That's not a small discrepancy,
- 1:52that's a civilization pattern. But I want to go deeper than
- 1:58just this video because this isn't just about economics, it's
- 2:03about world views. It's about what a culture
- 2:05believes about God, about law, about work and human nature.
- 2:10So today I want to I want to compare 3 systems.
- 2:13The first one would be Islamic culture, the second one would be
- 2:16Western secular culture, and the third would be the biblical
- 2:21worldview. And what I'm asking is which
- 2:24worldview actually produces human flourishing and why?
- 2:30So the first one, the paradox of Islamic economies.
- 2:35Let's start with the facts presented in the video.
- 2:37The Islamic world is one of the richest regions on earth in
- 2:42resources, yet one of the poorest in outcomes.
- 2:46The The video highlights several key issues.
- 2:49Oil wealth creates an illusion of prosperity.
- 2:54Many governments rely on oil rents instead of building real,
- 2:59diversified economies. You've got state control and
- 3:04cronyism dominate industries often are often owned by the
- 3:09ruling class or military elites. Then you got low workplace or
- 3:16workforce participation. In some Gulf states, citizens
- 3:21receive stipends for existing. As one commentator put it, they
- 3:25don't teach their people to work, they give them money,
- 3:29which is very important because we Western society are talking
- 3:33about going down the same Rd. Then you've got youth
- 3:36unemployment, which is massive, millions of young people with no
- 3:41productive outlet. You got the brain drain which is
- 3:44the best and the brightest leave for the West.
- 3:49And then the last point you've got is Sharia based financial
- 3:52restrictions. So Islamic banking bans
- 3:56interest, but often replaces it with complex, inefficient
- 4:01workarounds. So these are real structural
- 4:05issues, but they're symptoms of something deeper.
- 4:09So the second thing I want to look at is the worldview behind
- 4:13the economics. So the first point is Islamic
- 4:17worldview, law over liberty. Islamic culture is built on
- 4:23submission. That's literally what Islam
- 4:26means. The system fuses religion, state
- 4:30law, and economics into one unified authority structure.
- 4:36This creates centralized control, limited personal
- 4:40freedom, fear based compliance, and discouraged innovation.
- 4:48When the state and religion are fused, dissent becomes
- 4:52blasphemy, creativity becomes rebellion and entrepreneurship
- 4:59becomes a threat. But let's look at Western
- 5:04secular worldview, which is freedom without foundation.
- 5:08So the West on the other hand has swung to the opposite, the
- 5:12opposite extreme. Where Islamic systems are over
- 5:16controlled, the modern West is under anchored.
- 5:21So we have replaced. We've replaced God with the
- 5:24self, the market, the state, the ideology of progress.
- 5:31This produces innovation, yeah, sure, but also greed, a debt
- 5:38culture, collapsing families, moral confusion, and a society
- 5:45that no longer knows what truth is.
- 5:49So the third world, the third world view, the biblical world
- 5:52view, which is ordered freedom, the Bible presents a third way,
- 5:59not and authoritarian control, not secular chaos, but ordered
- 6:06liberty, some key biblical principles.
- 6:12Humans are made in God's image and they're capable of
- 6:16creativity and stewardship. It says this in Genesis chapter
- 6:21127 to 28. Also work is a calling and not a
- 6:27curse. Genesis 2 verse 15.
- 6:31Wealth is a stewardship and not entitlement.
- 6:37You're not entitled to be wealthy.
- 6:39Talks about that in Deuteronomy 8.
- 6:43Rulers are limited. They exist to punish evil, not
- 6:49control life. That's Romans.
- 6:53Romans 13 another point is justice requires honest weights
- 7:00and measures talks about that in Leviticus 1930 verse 35 to 36
- 7:07and the last point is a society collapses when the wicked rule
- 7:13says that in Proverbs 29 verse 2.
- 7:16This worldview produced the rule of law, property rights, the
- 7:22dignity of work, the concept of an individual, the idea of
- 7:28limited government, the Protestant work ethic, the
- 7:34foundations of modern science, the most prosperous societies in
- 7:39history history. Not because Christians are
- 7:45better people, but because God's design for human life actually
- 7:52works. So let's look at why Islamic
- 7:57economies struggle. Islam underestimates human sin.
- 8:04Islam teaches that people can be righteous through obedience to
- 8:09law. But the Bible says the heart is
- 8:13deceitful above all things. Jeremiah 17/9 When you give
- 8:18rulers enormous religious and political power, corruption is
- 8:24inevitable. The second point, Islam
- 8:28overestimates the power of law, Sharia.
- 8:33Sharia law tries to regulate every detail of life, including
- 8:39economics. But law cannot create virtue, it
- 8:44can only restrain evil. The Third Point is fear
- 8:48suppresses creativity. A culture built on fear of
- 8:53punishment or fear of dishonouring the group does not
- 8:59produce innovation. The 4th point, tribalism
- 9:04destroys trust. The Sunni you've got in Islam,
- 9:08Sunni versus Shia, clan versus clan, family versus family.
- 9:14Trust is the foundation of economic growth.
- 9:18And without trust you cannot build institutions.
- 9:22And the fifth point is that grace is missing.
- 9:26Islam is a system of works. The gospel is a system of grace.
- 9:34Grace produces generosity, humility, creativity,
- 9:40forgiveness, long term thinking. Fear produces stagnation,
- 9:47corruption, dependency, and resentment.
- 9:53Now here's the twist. The West is losing its biblical
- 9:58foundations. The West is not thriving because
- 10:02it's secular. It's thriving despite being
- 10:06secular because it still lives off the moral capital of its
- 10:11Christian past, of its judeo-christian history.
- 10:15But that capital is running out. We're seeing collapsing birth
- 10:20rates, collapsing families, exploding debt, government
- 10:27overreach, Mr. Albanese, moral confusion, a loss of work ethic,
- 10:35loss of truth and loss of meaning.
- 10:39The West is becoming post Christian and therefore pre
- 10:44collapse. Islamic economies show what
- 10:48happens when a culture builds on the wrong foundation.
- 10:52The West is showing what happens when a culture abandons the
- 10:57right foundation. So what?
- 11:03What do we learn? Islamic economies struggle
- 11:07because their worldview suppresses the very things that
- 11:12create prosperity. Western economies are declining
- 11:16because they've abandoned, abandoned the biblical worldview
- 11:22that once made them strong. The biblical worldview remains
- 11:27the only foundation, the only foundation that produces human
- 11:33flourishing economically, morally, and spiritually.
- 11:40The issue isn't Islam versus the West, it's false gods.
- 11:47Little G versus the true God. That's the real issue.
- 11:53False God versus the true God. False world views versus the
- 11:59truth of scripture. And until nations return to the
- 12:04God who made them, the decline will continue.
- 12:10Course this is all my opinion. My name is Jay Fallon.
