- 0:32I'm your host silly creature Johannes.
- 0:35Today, we're talking about episode 11, Deep dive in which
- 0:39the fraggle Pond is full of pink goo, the myrtles have the
- 0:42hiccups and everyone just needs to chill out.
- 0:45Our guest today is a puppeteer who's worked the Henson company
- 0:48on dozens of projects, including puppet up, Sid the Science Kid,
- 0:51or to Ned and as aughra on The Dark, Crystal age of resistance,
- 0:55outside of Henson, you seen our work on community Angel, h.r.,
- 0:58pufnstuf and Gia. He was even one of Doc, ock's
- 1:01arms and Spider-Man 2. That's pretty cool.
- 1:04I'm back to the Rock. She stars, as cotterpin doozer,
- 1:06the Storyteller and the one and only Mochi.
- 1:09We are extremely pleased to welcome, Donna, Kimball to the
- 1:12podcast. Hi, Donna.
- 1:14Hello, hello, how are you, Joe? I'm great.
- 1:17It's great to have you here. It's lovely being here.
- 1:21I'm so glad. Well, we obviously a lot to talk
- 1:24about because Mochi is a pretty big part of the show.
- 1:28So number, One question, how did you get started with Mochi?
- 1:32I know that this is not your first foray into into Mochi
- 1:35performance. So how did you get started with
- 1:38her? Yeah, that's right.
- 1:41Years ago, Lisa asked me to cover Mochi in the bed Folds 5
- 1:46video, I don't remember what year that was.
- 1:50Two thousand thirteen to Fifteen, but that was, when I
- 1:55first met Karen, and because she came to And it was wonderful.
- 2:02You know and Karen was so great and helpful and giving me notes
- 2:06when I would be to remember mokey's movements or more smooth
- 2:10and you know, lyrical and okay. Great, great great.
- 2:14So she was just so helpful in, you know, that first inhabiting
- 2:18of Mochi that I did because you know I was pretty nervous taking
- 2:21on a and iconic beloved character.
- 2:25So that was fun. That was a fun, couple of days
- 2:28and wonderful. In her and she's so I'm just
- 2:32going to start by singing care and Pearls Praises it's rare.
- 2:37It's rare to work with a performer who is so connected to
- 2:42that character that she plays. I mean, she's been read most of
- 2:46her life really is. She was so young and telling
- 2:49those stories that she told us about the original series.
- 2:53It was just, you know, we sat at her feet with giant eyeballs
- 2:57metaphorically just to here. All of her wonderful stories.
- 3:02And she's, you know, such a generous generous performer and
- 3:08just so Pro and so prepared. And I just can't say enough good
- 3:12things. So, you know, meeting her right
- 3:15away. On that, that first Mochi thing,
- 3:18was was wonderful. And then, we did the puppets for
- 3:21puppetry benefit at Henson for the center for puppetry arts and
- 3:27I got to do Mochi live and actually speak as her.
- 3:29So, Had you know, study a little bit think I had like one or two
- 3:32lines and then we sang, follow me which was great scary.
- 3:37Wonderful. And then and then rock on came
- 3:41along and yeah, I was asked to do that and wow.
- 3:49Okay. Yes please.
- 3:50And then it was picked up as a series so so that I've off we
- 3:54went so. So yeah.
- 3:55It's like I said it. You never had to.
- 3:58It's like doing audition for mochi.
- 3:59He you just you were just asked and, and like thrown into the
- 4:03fold, that is correct. I feel super lucky to have had
- 4:09that. I mean, that's a lot of trust
- 4:11that they place in you to to do that.
- 4:15And, you know, you feel that the Gratitude and the, the weight
- 4:19and the responsibility of it together at the same time.
- 4:22So yeah, it was wonderful. Eternally grateful.
- 4:27Well, lucky for you, for sure, but definitely lucky for them.
- 4:30And Company because not only, I mean, I think obviously they
- 4:32chose you because you are a talented performer, everyone
- 4:35knows that because we could just look at your work, but the fact
- 4:37that you can also take a character like Mochi who as
- 4:41Karen probably mentioned to you is a very specific character to
- 4:45get right in the way. She speaks The Way She Moves,
- 4:48she's very Zen until she's not, you know, she's very you'll
- 4:52smooth and it can be a very large presence and the fact that
- 4:57you were able to kind of get into that, so So easily,
- 5:00although I don't know how easy it was but how you could get
- 5:02into it so easily and mimic care a excuse me, Kathy Mullins
- 5:07voice. So well, it was very lucky that
- 5:11you just have all those qualities already.
- 5:13Well, thanks I, I did do a whole lot of homework, of course, you
- 5:20know, and all I done, auger in the middle of these things, of
- 5:23course. So I think that was I ended up
- 5:29using the same System of trying to voice match because I'm
- 5:33fairly new to voice matching but for Agra and from okey to I,
- 5:39well I recorded all of Agra onto an MP3 with just a very basic
- 5:43system. A microphone, two laptops and a
- 5:46you know, a speaker just a little, You Know, MP3 that I
- 5:49would keep on my phone and listen to and I did the same
- 5:52thing for a Mochi but the trick was that mokey's voice evolved
- 5:57quite a bit between season 1 and season.
- 5:59Five, sure. So in the course of my MP3 that
- 6:03I made, I thought wow, they're these are very different voices.
- 6:06So I had to make a choice as a performer, so I chose season 1
- 6:12mokey's voice which is airier little more of a lilt up and
- 6:18down a little more of a head voice.
- 6:20I kind of liked that for the character for the look of her
- 6:24and also I felt that separated me vocally from what Karen was
- 6:28doing as read. So um, so it was, it was very
- 6:33deliberate to choose the, you know, the season one that I have
- 6:35my always have my little sentence from the from the OG
- 6:38material and this was like, you know, them do this,
- 6:41reconstructions dear, diary, know what's the deal with?
- 6:46I'm paraphrasing doozer constructions, but I knew my
- 6:48calls was just, you know, from that's from one of the first few
- 6:53episodes that was like, oh yeah, I love this little monkey.
- 6:57So, so that's that's the one Ayah.
- 6:59Yeah, that's the monkeys voice that I chose I love it.
- 7:03So obviously Kathy Mullen performed this character
- 7:06originally you must have got a lot of influence and inspiration
- 7:10from her and from her performances you know I have to
- 7:13say I think she is one of the most brilliant puppeteers that
- 7:18I've ever seen. I think her work is exquisite
- 7:23and detailed. I think her she's just got it
- 7:26all man, her the voices. She does her acting ability how
- 7:32great she is technically as a puppeteer, she can sing.
- 7:36I mean, she's such a, she's such a giant in my eyes, such as
- 7:40Shiro. That I met her in person, one
- 7:45time at the, the, the red carpet or purple carpet premiere of
- 7:50Dark Crystal. And we had a lovely chat, and we
- 7:53have a had, a photo taken together that her grandson took.
- 7:55And I had asked her head, she met Louis leterrier yet.
- 7:59And she said, no and I knew what a huge fan he was.
- 8:02So I literally took her by the hand and walked her all the way
- 8:05across the party through all these people and said, Lilly
- 8:07this is, this is Kara, this is Kathy and I just stepped back
- 8:12and, you know, all of it to Titans meet.
- 8:18But just, I mean her work is exquisite.
- 8:22I hope that she's happy with without with what I did with
- 8:27Mochi, but she's just An amazing amazing performer.
- 8:32She is she's a wonderful human being and I'm sure she's happy
- 8:35because you really are doing Justice Beyond Justice to these
- 8:40characters. Thank you.
- 8:42But your Mochi is it is a little bit different from Kathy's and I
- 8:48can't exactly put my finger on why maybe you can you can
- 8:51elaborate a little bit but it's maybe she's a little bit more
- 8:54high energy or it's that she's more open to Things like it
- 9:00because Kathy's Mochi was almost like, blind to everyone else
- 9:03like she was in her own world and your monkey doesn't have
- 9:06that as much. Would you agree with that?
- 9:09Or is there something else that you kind of put your own spin on
- 9:11to, with the character? I think a lot of it was informed
- 9:15by the writing of course. But I think that it's a bit of
- 9:18both, she's kind of like certain that everything, you know,
- 9:21certain that her way is correct. She sees, I think it's both.
- 9:26I think that she does have a bit of a blind spot here and Are
- 9:30particularly in this episode and I think I just really love that
- 9:36the aspect of my version of Mochi.
- 9:39And that, I think she she sees her.
- 9:45It's a bit Grandeur. She's a bit Grandeur and sees
- 9:48more than she actually does. She thinks she sees more than
- 9:51she actually does and I find out how their it's about.
- 9:53Yes. And very, it's a flaw that she
- 9:57has and therefore, superhuman. And Ball and funny.
- 10:01So I always dig for the flaws and the characters because they
- 10:05make them super interesting and it's a comedic gold mine.
- 10:11Yes, especially on this show. Yeah.
- 10:14So there is another big change in Mochi.
- 10:18Since her previous appearance, which is actually her
- 10:21appearance, she is a bit of a redesign.
- 10:24Were you at all involved with deciding how the new Mochi would
- 10:28look or move? Thing like that the producers
- 10:34make the decisions about how a character you know the
- 10:38appearance of a character changes, I can tell you that the
- 10:43producers are the biggest fans of the show that you will ever
- 10:46meet. And I believe that when a change
- 10:49like that is made, it's made with the greatest amount of care
- 10:52and love. So I had full trust in them so I
- 10:59was not Consulted. It's just that's decisions like
- 11:02that are made way of puppeteers. Pay grade at least a puppeteer
- 11:06who's not a producer and that was, that would be me.
- 11:08Sure. That being said, I loved, I love
- 11:12the new look of her eye. I think she fits into this world
- 11:17and, you know, sometimes a person needs a little makeover
- 11:20and like a, some Oak over, it was awful.
- 11:28It's just, it's, it only stands. Out because everyone else looks
- 11:32exactly the same, you know, with except of Maybe Junior gorg.
- 11:37Everyone looks exactly the same in some of our characters are
- 11:39even the same exact puppets. So, to have only one fraggle to,
- 11:45to go through a makeover or Moke over it.
- 11:50I do just that it stands out, it's not a good or bad thing.
- 11:52It's just, it's just an interesting thing to notice.
- 11:55Mmm. II agree with you and I know
- 11:58that, you know, change can be hard for for fans, but I think
- 12:03ultimately, with seeing the show, I think most people, it
- 12:07seems to me have accepted it and seeing that, you know, I'm just
- 12:10looking at this shot right here on your on the tough pigs
- 12:15website. And to me to me she looks like
- 12:18she's part of this this world now and this iteration of the
- 12:21show. Yeah.
- 12:22So I can prevent. Yeah she's got this.
- 12:26Like so Described her as having this art teacher look, which I
- 12:29think fits her very well and without like, aging her up too
- 12:33much because I understand that was one of the reasons why they
- 12:36wanted to update. Her design was.
- 12:38So she didn't feel like the adult of the group quite as much
- 12:41as before. Yeah.
- 12:44And I'm glad for that because to play the, to play the mom
- 12:49character, when you're not, the mom is not fun.
- 12:52I feel as an actor, it's the least fun aspect.
- 12:56Of a character to play it. I am a mom so I'm not doing down
- 12:59the moms but I think it's just not fun to for the audience or
- 13:04it's not fun for certainly for me as a performer.
- 13:07So I love that. She is.
- 13:09She's caring and nurturing but she's not, you know, it doesn't
- 13:13feel like she's in charge or she doesn't have to be the stick in
- 13:16the mud of the group. Exactly.
- 13:18She's exactly parental figure. Mmm, Yeah, right.
- 13:22And she's game for all the adventures, you know, as much as
- 13:25anyone else and You know, her body is the same.
- 13:28So her arms are super long when they don't have a cardigan on
- 13:32them and and of course, her arms are revealed, so, the option of
- 13:37live hands was went away. So I had the Fantastic Kira
- 13:43Hall, who was my designated assist to and Kira was with me,
- 13:46pretty much in every shot doing mokey's other arm, because it
- 13:51was a lot to handle because her arms are twice as long as Jordan
- 13:56block. A car pulled out with these arms
- 13:57for me and I compared mokey's up Kira.
- 14:02Your puppets like half the way half the size, the huh?
- 14:06So Kathy, and she said, she's big and she's heavy.
- 14:08And she is, yeah, she needs those those hugging arms.
- 14:11You know, she needs people to get to everyone in the hug of
- 14:14the same. Tread I can toggle for my
- 14:16friends. That's right.
- 14:17And then some throw in a couple of spots do, but that's
- 14:21interesting that you say that about the life hands is
- 14:23something. I've been wondering since the
- 14:24beginning of the series that she's she's no longer alive hand
- 14:27character or like you say doesn't have the option of
- 14:29becoming a live hand character. And I don't know, there was
- 14:32nothing special about there. Being only one fraggle, who
- 14:36could manipulate or could, you know, the old Mochi was very big
- 14:41on grabbing other characters and holding them clothes in an
- 14:44Embrace, which I think is probably harder for you with the
- 14:47rod hands. I don't have a question in that,
- 14:50it's just an interesting observation, right?
- 14:53And it's, I tried to be, as touchy as the original as Kathy
- 14:57was, is the original Mochi. And she heard her say that she
- 15:01is touchy by Nature, and I think I am too.
- 15:04So. So yes, we did a lot of whenever
- 15:07I was next to a character that it was in trouble.
- 15:09I would always try to at least put a hand on them, or their
- 15:12back, grab them, hug them, ya think, but it's yeah, it's fun.
- 15:16So, but puppeteering wise, it's no, it's no more difficult
- 15:21technically to hug with rods, or with with life, let's get to
- 15:25know, really? Yeah, one thing I've been
- 15:28wondering about her outfits, she's got that great necklace.
- 15:31That has all the Little doodads, hanging off of it.
- 15:34We're any of those anything that you had, either a connection to
- 15:39or something that maybe you've created some kind of head Canon
- 15:43as to like why she has this thing dangling around her neck?
- 15:45Or is it just like random shiny things that she likes?
- 15:49I wish I was in on the the email chain that the EPS had in
- 15:55designing and to choosing each of those pendants.
- 15:59I just would just study them in between takes oh Paper clip.
- 16:03Oh, little little little bamboo thingies.
- 16:06So, no one. Ever wonder, why they chose that
- 16:09one. Is more like, why did they
- 16:11choose these wonderful? Right?
- 16:13But I thought why did Mochi choosing up.
- 16:15Exactly little things that find their way down, you know, down
- 16:20into the into the cave. Yeah, little bell.
- 16:23Hmm. How about without the Belles
- 16:25thing in it? Silent Bell?
- 16:27What does that mean? Hmm, it is kind of interesting
- 16:29that she sort of has Artifacts from outer space around her
- 16:35neck. Maybe doesn't even realize it
- 16:37right. Well, interesting, something
- 16:40unpack and season two, maybe exactly.
- 16:43Yes, Moki is not the only fraggle that you perform on the
- 16:48series. You also perform the Storyteller
- 16:51who unfortunately does not appear in this episode, but we
- 16:53got to talk about her anyway. So how did you get that?
- 16:56How did you get assigned as the Storyteller?
- 17:00Well, we had internal auditions. Once the main cast was cast, we
- 17:06had internal auditions for these secondary role so I read for
- 17:10trash Heap. I see Joe and Storyteller so
- 17:15they asked us to submit two or three versions of each character
- 17:18and I submitted for Storyteller and yeah I mean I wanted each
- 17:24one of them like, ooh, which one do I want?
- 17:27Ooh, I kind of want to be trashy because She's iconic but who oh
- 17:31I see Joe is new and it's an opportunity to put your own
- 17:34stamp on a character and then whoo storytellers got that great
- 17:37song. Gosh who would be happy with any
- 17:40one of them? And then Johnny told me shortly
- 17:43after we started production and I got Storyteller I'm like great
- 17:46which version he said a version to I was like really my my
- 17:52landlady character this is a character and a voice that I've
- 17:58pitched so many Times and no one ever has taken it.
- 18:02So I was like, yeah, apple they selected this particular voice.
- 18:07So I was like, okay. And so I would I had to go into
- 18:11rehearsal room one day where I wasn't on set and I brought a
- 18:15lie Eisner with me to assist me because they were available and
- 18:20then we were working with the producers assistant Caroline and
- 18:24then Chris a PA and we just started, you know, recording
- 18:28just recording What I had my with the character doing
- 18:30dialogue and just so the producer because could say, you
- 18:33know, yay nay little more this L'Amour that and we just kind of
- 18:37went crazy and I really just wanted to make Ali laughs
- 18:41because Ali has the best laughs Ali was usually Karen's and
- 18:47Red's designated assist but he was with me this day and we just
- 18:52went nuttier and nuttier and I don't like Grant just making her
- 18:57move all around swallowing. Words and just, you know, like I
- 19:02I'm not drunk. I just, I'll a gross motor
- 19:05skills. And so her first time I asked
- 19:13Johnny, is it okay? So I didn't hear anything back
- 19:15was. Do I get the thumbs up for this
- 19:17version of Storyteller? He says I didn't hear anything
- 19:18either so I guess so I'm like sweet.
- 19:21So I just went for it man. I just kind of went a little
- 19:25bonkers and so her first day on set was in In actually episode
- 19:301, with j.j. directors, she had no dialogue.
- 19:32It's when there's a crowd of fraggles, listening raptly to
- 19:36Uncle traveling Matt and you know, it's early in the Chute
- 19:38and everyone's behaving and everyone's kind of, you know,
- 19:41being still and attentive. And I'm Storyteller down in the
- 19:43front and I just turned everyone go guys.
- 19:45Quiet JJ was directing. Jae Suk Hoon.
- 19:52Who is that? I would Storyteller.
- 19:54That's Donna. Oh okay, so she would just say
- 19:58anything do Anything and never walked in a straight line and I
- 20:02just, I just had a blast and she called every director JJ.
- 20:06Yeah. Okay, Georgia.
- 20:08Where are you saying? I love that.
- 20:13There's a character who can literally just do anything
- 20:15though, like that. There's, there's so much value
- 20:17in that. And, you know, we are main
- 20:19characters have a lot of flexibility, but there's really
- 20:22only like two or three fraggles who can literally just get away
- 20:25with anything and your version. The Storyteller is one of those
- 20:28which is fantastic. It's so much fun.
- 20:31Thank you, thank you. I did have a blast.
- 20:34You know she's in, she's an older lady with a comfy clothes
- 20:37and a statement necklace with nothing to lose.
- 20:40That's right. My kind of gal, and I love her
- 20:43collection of glasses. I love, I love the way that her
- 20:46eyes work, wear it with the glasses with the eyelid that
- 20:48lift up if she needs to, you know, show surprise or whatever
- 20:51it is. That's gotten so much fun for
- 20:54you or I worked that. Yeah, I realized if I could, I
- 20:58could flip my head up really quickly and they would, they
- 21:00would stay great Polly. I had a little too much fun
- 21:05with, uh, with uh, that's great. I also have to call out the
- 21:09like, the Soul Train Line dance in a previous episode where all
- 21:12the fraggles are dancing and she's doing this like hip
- 21:14thrusting thing that I can't figure out.
- 21:17I'm not a puppeteer. So I don't know what you're
- 21:19doing down there to make her move.
- 21:21That way. My arm doesn't do that.
- 21:23So it was hysterical. Do you want me to tell you?
- 21:26Yeah, you go for it. Yeah, I have the body, I had the
- 21:29body and here I had the hands. And so, you know, I'm doing the
- 21:34head in the body and opposite direction and then what I wanted
- 21:37to do was have her backing up directly into camera, great.
- 21:40You know, sort of doing this back up thing.
- 21:42Yeah, but it wasn't working and so Kira suggested.
- 21:45Can you make a pun about sideways booties lab?
- 21:47I was like, okay. I just again, waiting for
- 21:50someone to say, yeah, that's too much.
- 21:52That's just too much, you gotta back off easy.
- 21:53This is you wrote that line perfectly.
- 21:56It was right there. I figured, you know, older kids
- 22:00will just think she's funny and, you know, pushing it a little
- 22:02bit and see exactly. Yeah.
- 22:04That was that was that was a that was a sweaty day.
- 22:07That was a fun day. I bet it was.
- 22:08Yeah. Well, as we mentioned a couple
- 22:11times, you also played all Grand age resistance, which was
- 22:14fantastic. Did an amazing job?
- 22:17Your, your version of Agra was so spot-on.
- 22:22I honestly thought that, of course, I don't remember her
- 22:25name. The original performer of the of
- 22:27the character Billie Whitelaw, thank you, Billie.
- 22:29Whitelaw was, was who, you know, we know now she has passed, but
- 22:33I thought she was still doing the character because the voice
- 22:35was just perfect. Thank you.
- 22:38Can you tell me your couple of the, the main similarities or
- 22:42differences between working on the age of resistance, set
- 22:45versus the back to the rock set aside, of course, from the
- 22:49country of origin, Well, you know, I didn't work on the set
- 22:55of Dark Crystal. Oh, I didn't know that.
- 22:57I assumed that you were there. No.
- 23:00Kevin Clash performed her and did scratch dialogue.
- 23:03But I did, I did scratch track for Kevin to perform with, and
- 23:08to shoot with, on the day. And then he would record new
- 23:10dialogue. And then that would bounce back
- 23:13to me in a TR, you know, months later.
- 23:16So, I visited the set, which was amazing.
- 23:18I mean, you know, it's just wonderful.
- 23:21When a puppet show has a big budget, that was the two main
- 23:25similarities and and that I was gifted with recreating an iconic
- 23:30character. But so yeah I so wasn't on set
- 23:36but it looked awesome. I certainly wanted to be it
- 23:38wasn't I'm sure ryung. Hey I wanted to be there to I
- 23:41get it Rita. Yeah as Rita if she could just
- 23:45put me in your suitcase and throw in one more Americans.
- 23:48Nope. Yeah.
- 23:51I'm sorry about that but you got to play in Calgary with the rest
- 23:55of the Fraggle Rock crew and you got to be in this episode number
- 23:5911 which was deep dive. As we've said, let's talk about
- 24:03it. How about that?
- 24:04Let's do it. So this episode begins in red
- 24:08and mokey's Cave where the roommates I love.
- 24:11Always when we get to see fraggles wearing pajamas and
- 24:14specifically with these two characters with their hair down
- 24:17like the guys and that's that's mokey's original row.
- 24:20By the way. That's The original series.
- 24:22Well that's cool. I love that.
- 24:23That's and just saved everything.
- 24:24That's so cool. There's so much to do and read
- 24:29can't decide. But first before she does
- 24:31anything, she has to take a dip in the fraggle Pond, which is
- 24:33how she starts every single day wouldn't you?
- 24:36If you have been Fraggle Rock we get this cool scene of her at
- 24:41the top of the diving Rock and she's full body.
- 24:45She's stretching, she looks real.
- 24:47I love stuff like that. It's so cool.
- 24:50Just I assume we've you've chroma keyed out.
- 24:55Karen prowl for that shot and before she can jump, pogie is
- 25:01there. He blows his whistle and tells
- 25:02her that she can't dive because the fraggle Pond is filled with
- 25:06this pink. Goo and more importantly, pogie
- 25:11has a whistle and he's going to use it throughout this episode.
- 25:14Right? So good for poke.
- 25:16Don't we love pogie? We love poke.
- 25:19Poke was was Fraggle, Pond, really filled with that that
- 25:23pink goo, because I know that you guys are usually use real
- 25:26water on sets, but was there really a senior Taliban that it?
- 25:30In fact was, oh, I seem to recall that, yes, because I
- 25:34remember that shooting the, the GU being sucked up by the vine
- 25:41was, is it reverse? Its gue coming out of the vine
- 25:44is truly about in Reverse. So yeah, I do believe there was,
- 25:48there was going that there. Pond, I seem to recall that
- 25:53seems really hard to clean her away from it, but kept the
- 25:56puppets far as far away from it as possible because we could be
- 26:00a little acts that are pro, right?
- 26:02But yes, I believe there was there was good in that pond.
- 26:05That's pretty cool. More.
- 26:06Practical effects wish I could say it smells like peppermint
- 26:10because doesn't it look like it should smell?
- 26:12Yeah that or yeah. I was thinking either some kind
- 26:15of berry or like Pepto-Bismol you know like kind of Miss
- 26:19medicinal. What did it smell?
- 26:21Yeah. I don't recall I don't think it
- 26:26had a smell that was bit of a miracle on our department.
- 26:29Okay. Cars better that than like
- 26:31rotting milk. You know what I mean, right?
- 26:33Yeah, I've been a bad bad day at work.
- 26:37We were checking in with the myrtles.
- 26:40The since the pinku is continue to the water, the myrtles are
- 26:42all have all been relegated to boobers, laundry buckets and
- 26:47they all have the hiccups We already knew all this
- 26:51information, but buber wanted to see it again while wearing his
- 26:53doctor clothes, which I think is adorable.
- 26:56And also a great way to get some plot, Exposition into a new
- 27:00episode Gobo suggest that we can scare the myrtles to have them,
- 27:09get rid of their hiccups. So boober when we have to
- 27:12brainstorm and this is actually something that we've seen in the
- 27:15original Fraggle, Rock series. That's boober is an expert in
- 27:19scares. There was an episode called
- 27:21scared silly, where he scares Wembley over and over and again
- 27:24to test his belubius So it's a little bit of hidden commentary.
- 27:29Excuse me continuity wouldn't be surprised if Johnny tartaglia
- 27:33made that cable'. He looks like he's a fraggle
- 27:36database are Johnny he is yeah something that's been referenced
- 27:41many times on this podcast of the fact that Johnny knows
- 27:45everything and remembers everything from the series and
- 27:48in Sisson including everything from the old series.
- 27:52Which I as a man, I'm so grateful for not saying that to
- 27:55make fun. I love it.
- 27:55Yeah. Oh yeah, I know.
- 27:58Red wants to help with the situation but she can't focus
- 28:01until she's had her first dive of the day but she can't dive
- 28:03until they fix the water situation and she is stuck in
- 28:05this endless loop. But Mochi is there to tell her
- 28:09that the universe is telling read that she needs to relax.
- 28:14Read is not exactly the relaxing type, of course, hmm.
- 28:18Is that something that you have in common with with Mochi?
- 28:21That's oh gosh. Yes.
- 28:23I am. If I am your friend, I'm the
- 28:25friend who is full of unsold. Sedate advice, most of it's a
- 28:30great, but it's good advice. No.
- 28:33But, but yeah, I'm definitely, you know.
- 28:37Yeah, I think I am a little bit of.
- 28:38Okay, this means something, this means something sure.
- 28:42This has significance. What does it mean?
- 28:44Well yeah I'm definitely both of those aspects of Mochi for a
- 28:49sure. Yeah.
- 28:51Yeah. The universe is telling you that
- 28:54you know XYZ. Yeah.
- 28:56Also this is something Not like my father does.
- 28:59And I sometimes catch myself doing of like giving someone
- 29:01advice and going, why don't you take my advice, I told you the
- 29:04answer, just do it. Yeah.
- 29:05Like why don't you just go? Yeah I told you to tell why
- 29:08aren't you telling ya? My sister is the same way she
- 29:11and I will say, you know, I I told him I don't know if people
- 29:15would just listen to me. That's right.
- 29:17To be so much easier. I have all the answers and it's
- 29:20so arrogant. I mean, admittedly is.
- 29:23So I love I just love not to jump ahead but I Of mokey's Arc
- 29:28in this episode. And it's this this episode is
- 29:32the biggest lesson for me personally, that that I don't
- 29:37want to get ahead. Go, you do you think do you?
- 29:39Okay? We'll get there.
- 29:39Alright, well, stay tuned folks. Okay, so this is the part where
- 29:44we get to see traveling Matt's post card.
- 29:46He's got some great advice for red, he's frolicking in a flower
- 29:50bed, he discovers the puff Epistles, which are clouds in
- 29:54the sky, which made me think at first, I was like, oh, makes
- 29:57sense. Fraggles don't know what clouds
- 29:58are because they live in a cave. Then it made me think well,
- 30:01they've been in the gorgs garden to the quarks not have caves.
- 30:06Excuse me, a clouds over their heads or well.
- 30:09Maybe the fraggles are a little more concerned with not getting
- 30:12thumped by a gorg and they haven't, you know, they're all,
- 30:15that's where they need to have their eyes, right?
- 30:18Yeah. I'll accept that as an answer
- 30:19that makes sense. Yeah, you gotta keep your head
- 30:21forward and not guess. Want to make sense Hugh.
- 30:23Glad I passed that one. Who Matt wants to relax with
- 30:30those puffy pickles. So he's going to go up there
- 30:33and, you know, be among them as a skydiver and we get a classic
- 30:38traveling Matt freak out as he skydives.
- 30:41And I love whenever there's a moment where traveling Matt is
- 30:45explaining in the narration, like it was so relaxing and I
- 30:48wasn't scared at all. And of course we're seeing on
- 30:50screen, like his eyes are popping out of his head.
- 30:52He's, you know, screaming his head off and it's terrible, so
- 30:55funny. So funny, you know, I have to
- 30:57say that those were all done on locations.
- 30:59So Uncle traveling Matt days were separate from set, but
- 31:03seeing it all put together with Uncle traveling Matt's.
- 31:07So, flippin funny with Frank mesh polite and Kevin Clash
- 31:11tag-teaming as Uncle traveling, Matt just, so, so funny.
- 31:16Those are some of my favorite scenes.
- 31:18I just think they're hilarious. They are hysterical.
- 31:21So you never got to work on any of the Travelling Matt segments
- 31:23for this. No, sadly, but when Uncle
- 31:26traveling, Matt was on the. Rock it was like Yay Uncle
- 31:29traveling Matt's back. I know I love that guy.
- 31:34We interrupt this podcast for a special postcard from our uncle
- 31:38traveling. John's Heart A glia and A
- 31:40fraggle fast fact. Today's fraggle fast.
- 31:43Fact is choreographing puppets is hard.
- 31:46Yes. Choreographing puppets is hard
- 31:48especially because for the most part, you only see from the
- 31:50waist up on a puppet. But what you have to remember is
- 31:53for everything, the puppets doing on-camera, there's a human
- 31:55being, a very large human being attached to that.
- 31:57A puppet right below frame. So we have to fit sometimes 25
- 32:01puppets into frame and we had to figure out where those 25 human
- 32:04performers can stand so that they can all see a monitor so
- 32:08that everyone can move safely, so that we're not tripping over
- 32:11each other, so that the camera doesn't get in the way.
- 32:13So it's a lot of logistics. And oftentimes, what we would do
- 32:16is on the directors, rehearsal days, every time we get a new
- 32:19director, we would have a rehearsal day to figure out
- 32:21difficult sequences including musical numbers, we would figure
- 32:24out the choreography on that day.
- 32:26So when the actual day, It came to shoot the song.
- 32:29We kind of already knew what we were going to do.
- 32:31One of my favorite musical moments to stage on Fraggle Rock
- 32:33was Kragle Lagoon, which is Reds.
- 32:35Big kind of fantasy vacation number in episode 8.
- 32:39And we did, we had so much fun doing Conga lines and circles
- 32:42around red and red was doing this.
- 32:44Awesome dance with her Maracas. It was a lot of fun, took a lot
- 32:47of work and there's a lot of bodies getting in the way and
- 32:50twisting and contorting to make it look good.
- 32:52But that's the fun of puppetry and I hope we hope you enjoyed
- 32:54it. All right, back to the podcast.
- 33:00So read decides, if she can't dive, she needs a new extreme
- 33:04activity. She is going to zipline through,
- 33:07the Great Hall but Mochi is telling her no, no, universe is
- 33:11telling you, you need to slow down and read says, I am red, I
- 33:15move. I jump sometimes I lunged, but I
- 33:17do not sit still, which is accurate.
- 33:22I don't need to tell you that. That's very red.
- 33:24She can't stand still, stand still at all.
- 33:27Which sounds exhausting for Karen.
- 33:29The Karen always has to be on the Move.
- 33:31Yes. Karen is a very active person.
- 33:34She you know, she's a very sporty person.
- 33:37She always has gear the proper Gear with her.
- 33:40She's a Johnny always said that Karen is the person you want
- 33:44with you in the zombie apocalypse because she has.
- 33:48She has everything last March we.
- 33:51We took a gondola up to some snowy peak in Calgary.
- 33:56A bunch of us went. It was my birthday.
- 33:58And so bunch of us went and Karen had their, we get off the
- 34:02gondola and Karen reaches into her bag and Shobha, Shobha.
- 34:06She had this like collapsible poles like to hike with the snow
- 34:11is like, amazing. It's what those out that's
- 34:16totally prepared, totally active but yeah, she she canoes she
- 34:21bikes, she hikes. She's a, she's a, she's a go-go
- 34:24goer. Wow, so she would zipline over
- 34:28the Great. If she could Karen probably
- 34:30would. Yeah yeah we would I'm leaving.
- 34:35Meanwhile we're going to check in with the Doozers there.
- 34:37They have a support group circle because they have been able to
- 34:40build lately and I love this shot of them sitting around the
- 34:44circle and they're all kind of in mid Panic or mid.
- 34:47I don't know depression depressive episode I love that.
- 34:52Some of them are wearing knitted clothing.
- 34:54I think one of them is actually knitting and that seems to be a
- 34:57call back to the original series episode.
- 34:58Great radish famine, when they are not able to build because
- 35:03they don't have enough radishes and the Doozers shift from
- 35:05construction to knitting. So is it is part of their their
- 35:10blood that they love to knit gotta stay busy.
- 35:13Exactly. Idle Hands.
- 35:15Idle tiny, these are hands. Doctor level is the leader of
- 35:18this group. He has a tiny little clipboard
- 35:21and it one point we see the clipboard.
- 35:23Like he kind of shows it to the camera.
- 35:25I pause it to see what he's been writing and he had been
- 35:28doodling. There's a little picture of a
- 35:30dog. There's a little island.
- 35:31There's a picture of a drill. He is probably not very good at
- 35:35his job. He's not taking accurate notes.
- 35:36At all. No no.
- 35:39But he did have some good advice.
- 35:40Sometimes you gotta walk away and come back with fresh screws.
- 35:44That's true. Right.
- 35:45That's true. Yeah, we're going to see that
- 35:48especially with cotter pin who check in with because she is
- 35:54still trying to figure out what's going on with this pink
- 35:55goo and how to clean it. And even No, the other teachers
- 35:59are telling her it's you know, to walk away.
- 36:02She's like a can't. I'm in the middle of this
- 36:04project. Had a focus on it and hey, you
- 36:07are cotter pin. Yeah, that's pretty neat.
- 36:11I was, I agree. Was that a guy like a gimme that
- 36:15because you were playing Kathy Mullins characters that you
- 36:18would also be cotter pin or was at an audition process as well.
- 36:21Nope no it was just, it was a bundle.
- 36:25I was given the bundle of Mochi and cotter pin both and Yeah,
- 36:30what a great character cotter pin is and I want I can just so
- 36:36relate. She's hard on herself, she
- 36:38pushes herself, she's pretty you know, Relentless she uses that
- 36:44word Relentless but gosh I just I just love how busy she is.
- 36:49Did she just takes things on and she's pretty selfless.
- 36:52Yeah. So heard architect together.
- 36:57My gosh Johnny and I We just caught up in.
- 37:01Did I ever tell you about the time?
- 37:02I was Loni Anderson's Pool boy, because just yesterday, sir.
- 37:09So we said, we were going to come up with like a spinning
- 37:11wheel of like some celebrity in some weird occupation and spin
- 37:16it. So Johnny gets, could I tell you
- 37:17about the time? I was Eric, Estrada's
- 37:20pedicurist, that's right, are not the manicures, just the
- 37:24pedicurist. We can't reach his fingers, he's
- 37:28so tiny me, I know, right? Anyway.
- 37:32Yes, as if I love it, that's, that's got to be such a blast.
- 37:36And one of the great thing about Cotter pin, in my opinion is,
- 37:39she's one of the few characters from the original series, who
- 37:42had like, a really full story arc because she starts isn't
- 37:46this this newbie, but she has ideas and then she gets, she
- 37:50graduates to becoming, you know, like a cyst, an architect.
- 37:54And she's the one who ends up having these relationships with
- 37:58the fraggles. And kind of bringing them into
- 38:00her world and she's not the same doozer that she was, you know,
- 38:05if between the first episode middle of the series in the end
- 38:07of the series. So I love seeing some of those
- 38:11characteristics carry through to the new series which you know,
- 38:14as we know is is like this soft reboot where she's the same
- 38:18doozer as she was before but also not really yeah, yeah, I
- 38:24love that she's just, you know, this the same but but different
- 38:28and I just love that she, you know, she kind of helps to save
- 38:32the day and, and, you know, subsequent episodes, but she
- 38:36just kind of just doesn't stop. And she just wants to keep
- 38:40growing learning and it's not about ego for her.
- 38:43And, you know, she's very much a doozer and it's, you know, it's
- 38:46all about work, work work. But yeah, her spirit her, you
- 38:52know, her cool little vehicle that she drives.
- 38:55I mean, come on the all the vehicles, getting an upgrade
- 38:59Made. Yes, just the doozer Dome days
- 39:02where, you know extremely bit claustrophobic days but gosh it
- 39:06was it was fun playing with all these dudes are some it looked
- 39:09so good that doozer. Joey did we first walked in and
- 39:13saw that we were all like, ah, what this play set?
- 39:18Yeah, yeah. Yeah.
- 39:20Someone get Henson licensing on the phone.
- 39:22We need a yeah. Need to do is replace that were
- 39:24there. Any interesting challenges to
- 39:27performing a doozer as Opposed to like a hand.
- 39:29Puppet, like a fraggle? Yeah, very much.
- 39:32So we had two different versions of each one.
- 39:35We had the the remote control version and then the rod puppet
- 39:40version. I think we ended up using the
- 39:43remote controls mostly but there was a big learning curve with
- 39:46the Doozers on this show because they're all mechanical and you
- 39:52know wires and you know things they are prone to to you know a
- 39:58little snack. Who's here and there, but an
- 40:01amazing team who would were always at the ready flying in.
- 40:05And just going to the doozer part of the Creature Shop in
- 40:09Calgary and seeing all the little tiny props, the tiny
- 40:12drills, the little tiny hands that would change out and tiny
- 40:17little accessories that they would wear.
- 40:20I mean, such detail. I mean, you just and I Remember
- 40:24Loving, just loving the Doozers. I love the Doozers.
- 40:34And yeah, like I said once once we got over that learning curve
- 40:40it was it was great. Such fun with with so many radio
- 40:44control Parts. Something must have gone wrong
- 40:48at some point, are there any interesting stories about
- 40:52something with the Doozers, just completely not working or
- 40:54falling apart, or disaster striking Cutter pin did catch
- 40:59fire one time, what? Yeah, there was a day where you
- 41:04know, Kira was a holding cotter pin, the rod version and she was
- 41:09oh this is getting warm and then 0 and then we saw a little bit
- 41:13of smoke and little Flames. Jason was right there just roof
- 41:17and so it was, you know, just a couple of seconds but you know,
- 41:20these things, these things can happen.
- 41:22But yeah, people are right there, taking care of it.
- 41:25So it was a it was a Dramatic event.
- 41:29But it literally lasted two seconds.
- 41:31But we talked about it all day long.
- 41:33Oh my gosh. Yeah, horse.
- 41:35I mean, also lets terrifying for a number of reasons.
- 41:37Yes. And not the actual puppet, the
- 41:40the battery part that was on the handle.
- 41:43So yeah, right. Gotcha.
- 41:44Yeah, I've heard some battery and then right.
- 41:48And then back away where we've heard similar stories, like we
- 41:52obviously know the story about you know the fire that broke out
- 41:54on the age of resistance set and I Was present.
- 41:58This I won't go into too much detail on this but I was present
- 42:00for a minor similar fire where, you know, like the spark in the
- 42:06smoke but not the real fire on a Sesame Street thing that.
- 42:12Yeah, it was, it was like they had a new thing, a new Gizmo and
- 42:16and they were testing it out and, you know, it was one of
- 42:18those like two seconds later and Elmo would have caught fire and
- 42:21then you lose an Elmo, you know, thankfully, that didn't happen.
- 42:25Everyone's okay. But Papa, His day is dangerous
- 42:28business. You know, tell you what, I think
- 42:32can happen. My, um, it's true.
- 42:35So later on in the episode, what we can, we can put a bow on the
- 42:39little, the doozer story line here.
- 42:41Cutter pin does agree that she needs to take a break.
- 42:44Come back with fresh eyes, fresh perspective.
- 42:47And she drops one of those vines into the water and it see that
- 42:51it sucks up the the pink goop. That'll be something that
- 42:54carries through to the next episode.
- 42:56But I love that you told us that That they shot that in reverse
- 42:59because I genuinely didn't know. I didn't think about it.
- 43:01I just assumed it was actually sucking up the pink goo, the
- 43:06magic of Cinema. They're really that's Hollywood.
- 43:12A mysterious Sky bucket is dropping into the fraggle Pond
- 43:16and it is from Junior gorg who is getting some water for junior
- 43:20jr. His plant junior is worried
- 43:24because like he was not expecting this pink goo but it
- 43:26seems that Mom paw Gorg love it because they're using it as mud
- 43:30masks. Mom's chin.
- 43:32Fur has never been softer. I will take her word for it
- 43:38later on, in the episode Junior, realizes the pinku is actually
- 43:41hurting jr. Jr.
- 43:43And he makes the realization that what's good for the gorgs?
- 43:45May not be good for the plants and he douses Junior journalism
- 43:49water to clean and clean them up.
- 43:51Were you at all involved with the the the gorg segments of the
- 43:55show? Very little, I got to be junior
- 43:58jr. In one of the later episodes
- 44:04forget which one wasn't this one?
- 44:06Where do you know, Juniors pot is sitting on on the bank of
- 44:13next to where the fraggles come out.
- 44:15So there was one time where I was the I was free.
- 44:17I was the person and ran underneath figured out this
- 44:21does. This Is Us Okay and like I've
- 44:23done Spider-Man. I know how technical things.
- 44:26Work, you lift, you initiate the movement from the base.
- 44:28I got this side, so, um, I popped that in for a couple I
- 44:33think it was gosh, was it the, it may have been during the, the
- 44:39cutaways for the song, the big one heart song or than the final
- 44:46episode. Yeah, I may be mistaken, but it
- 44:50was definitely one where where jr.
- 44:52Jr. Revives.
- 44:54But yeah, I actually had a couple days off when it was gorg
- 44:57time because I just was not needed or there was, there was
- 45:02always a blue cube set up either on stage 3 where the gorgs
- 45:05garden was or on stage one or both.
- 45:09So anytime there was a ton of extra footage that would be
- 45:13second unit or even third unit. I think on some days where
- 45:17anything full body with a fraggle or you know some doozer
- 45:22stuff to was shot in a blue cube so we were always rotating
- 45:26Between sets. So you yeah, usually on gorg
- 45:28stuff it was generally in the blue cube doing something right.
- 45:32Well there's a great shot. I think it's in the first
- 45:34episode where Junior gorg picks up Mochi and mochi does be the
- 45:39noodle and slides out of his hand.
- 45:40And we were told that was done live for the shot Juniors hand
- 45:45and they shot. Obviously you in that blue cube
- 45:47as Mochi. Yeah, that's cool.
- 45:50I was so fun to shoot in layers. I don't know that I've ever done
- 45:54that. It was it was just super
- 45:57exciting to do that. So I would sort of shape her to
- 46:01to be in his hand and and my favorite part was, of course was
- 46:06Kira's. Help was sliding out and sliding
- 46:10over and making a weird noise. I think be the noodle, who play
- 46:14all that? He can barely hear it.
- 46:17He's a noodle just sort of making, of course.
- 46:22Yeah. When you're when you sort of
- 46:25forget that you have bone For a second and just think it sounds
- 46:28dumb that sound is in their final version.
- 46:32But yeah, shooting with layers like that.
- 46:34It was really oh, that was the the one in the in the first
- 46:38episode where you're shooting the you see the fraggles from
- 46:41behind and they're running and they do the big leap, they fall
- 46:45down to the trash and that's where they first meet trash Heap
- 46:47in this iteration that was we're sitting in place on little rolly
- 46:54stools under the Frame making these frogs run, but we're
- 46:58watching our puppets on this moving shot and I don't remember
- 47:02if they were doing it live on the gorg set simultaneously with
- 47:06us or if it was pre-recorded but it was like a video game.
- 47:10So like on the side monkeys got a little rock and I think I went
- 47:13around it for a second and then did a quick glance back and then
- 47:16we all just wow jump that is like this is like puppeteering
- 47:19in a video game. This is so cool.
- 47:22Yeah, yeah that like kind of like a new love that a new
- 47:25muscle. Too kind of exercise there
- 47:27because yeah, yeah. Usually you can least like I'm
- 47:30sure you're always looking your mom and Bruce anyway, but like
- 47:32if you need to you can glance up and see.
- 47:34Okay there's a rock there you know, I can get around that.
- 47:37Yeah yeah such helpful also because it just orient's you and
- 47:40lets, you know, you know where you are.
- 47:43What you're looking at, where junior is all of that stuff.
- 47:47So it was and I think the one of the first times whether when you
- 47:51first see them coming into the gorgs garden and there's a ramp
- 47:54of blue Ramp. And you see like Johnny you're
- 47:58walking down that was done on Blues.
- 48:01I think you only see full body Gobo, full body, red and that
- 48:04one in the rest of us are just kind of peeking behind.
- 48:07But yeah, they built a blue ramp and everything and they layered
- 48:09in the the actual fraggle whole. So you know, we could see what
- 48:14was going on. Oh, it's just so fascinating and
- 48:17it's super helpful as a performer in the kind of thing
- 48:20that like they could easily add in post if they wanted to and
- 48:24they make it It much easier for you.
- 48:27You can have such a more natural performance when you can see
- 48:30live. Exactly what's going to be
- 48:32seeing on screen. Yeah, it's you can tell you
- 48:36could see that professionalism, you know, as a viewer good.
- 48:39Yeah. Yeah, definitely.
- 48:41Okay. Next up, we check in with Doc
- 48:43and sprocket sprocket has fleas and he's wearing a cone that
- 48:48makes him look like a cute lamp Doc, is trying to give him his
- 48:52flea pills, but he just won't have a he spit it out.
- 48:55She Tries with putting it in with a cookie and a block of
- 49:00cheese while tickling him with some of these.
- 49:02We get a really cool shot with the as if the camera is inside
- 49:06sprockets mouth, as we she's fun.
- 49:09Yeah. Do you know how they did that?
- 49:12Oh, I I wasn't there that day, but I would guess that they
- 49:16built a special, you know, sprocket rig for that, and
- 49:20framed up on Lily through that. And I imagine it's larger than
- 49:24the actual sprocket, right? But, but yeah, yeah, that was
- 49:28those fun POV shots. Just I just love.
- 49:31Am I thought that added so much? But yeah, that's my guess is
- 49:35that they built a big interior. Interior of sprockets math.
- 49:39Yeah. Did you scam right?
- 49:42Yeah. Did you ever get to play on the
- 49:44the dock Workshop? Set with those folks?
- 49:47Yeah, just a little. I assisted Frank mesh light on
- 49:50Uncle traveling Matt. When he comes back in the last
- 49:55Odd or two when he comes back and you know that was I think
- 50:00that was my first day on set back in January because you
- 50:02know, we shot all the dock and sprocket stuff at the very
- 50:05beginning of the shoot. So all of that was done in
- 50:08January and then we moved to the fraggle to the Great Hall.
- 50:12So yeah, and we shot in of a so 12, where cotter pin comes in
- 50:19climbs, climbs up the furry Mountain, Harry Mojo, and then
- 50:23climbs up on the desk we ended up reshoot.
- 50:25It at the end because like I said there was this learning
- 50:28curve with Doozers and so yeah we reshot all that which I was
- 50:33glad about because I think that was also my first day who you
- 50:38want to nail your first day and it was a little it was a little
- 50:41challenging so I feel like that's benefit.
- 50:43Yeah. Everyone's first day is
- 50:45something extremely challenged everyone is just like thrown in
- 50:48feet. First to something that like
- 50:50it's not just like getting your puppet on screen and seeing a
- 50:52few lines. It's not an hour.
- 50:54We're going to have your doozer. Climbing on a dog up the up the
- 50:57thing. And, you know, here you go duck,
- 51:01right? Yeah.
- 51:03And you just do your best and sometimes you get to reshoot,
- 51:05sometimes you don't. But yeah, are you just got to
- 51:09get out of rally and leave the ego behind and get in there and
- 51:14do the thing. Exactly.
- 51:16Get the shot. That's good advice for all of
- 51:18us. Just get in there and do the
- 51:19thing. Do the thing, get in the air.
- 51:22Check that ego at the door. Exactly.
- 51:26Back in Fraggle, Rock boober Wembley have come up with
- 51:29something pretty scary to help the mughals break out of their
- 51:31pickups. The scary thing is basically
- 51:34Wembley covering his eyes, you know, putting his arms up and
- 51:37going raaah, it doesn't work. It was terrifying but it did not
- 51:41work but Mochi has a great response.
- 51:44This like dead Pam. Like your you guys were gone
- 51:46quite a while. That's what you came up with.
- 51:51Yeah, so great loves it when I love what she does when she's
- 51:55got a little Fast. Yeah, yeah, that's fun.
- 51:59Later on in the episode Gobo boober Wembley, you're going to
- 52:02try a couple more times to scare the myrtles that cover the sums
- 52:05of cover themselves in blankets and throw them off and Shout.
- 52:08These are all very like cheap low-key voice to scare them.
- 52:12I noticed, like there's no real, like interesting puppetry
- 52:15effects or computer, animated assistant, whatever new props
- 52:21and characters to build. It's like now we're just gonna
- 52:24peek a boo and scare them. Real, real low Tech.
- 52:27Those guys had so much fun shooting those scenes.
- 52:29I have to say, they just, there are also silly for rank Jordan
- 52:33and Johnny Gosch, they had a lot of fun.
- 52:36The the scene where they're there, they have the graphic was
- 52:41like first going to do this? That's later though, isn't it?
- 52:43That's a little bit later about the last.
- 52:45Yeah. Okay.
- 52:45You talk about gladly no go ahead go for it.
- 52:48Yeah we shot that like first thing in the morning so I was
- 52:50kind of still working. It's like all three of those
- 52:54guys had had like 17 shots of espresso before because they're
- 52:57all like weird. But as performers and all that
- 53:00energy is in the show which is just so exciting.
- 53:03I remember thinking, okay? They're like flying high with
- 53:07all this adrenaline and monkeys not monkeys.
- 53:09Just kind of like oh my gosh. Okay, so they walk past and I
- 53:13just had her staring at these giant white eyes and I just kept
- 53:16her, kept her there for much longer than they ended up using
- 53:21in the tank but it was, it was really hilarious.
- 53:24Yeah. They the boys.
- 53:25A blast with this episode, for sure.
- 53:28Yeah. And honestly Mochi does Mochi.
- 53:32Does look real great, you know, opposite them like you're right.
- 53:37They have this high energy and they're being very silly and
- 53:39funny but Mochi being so far back reserved and so deadpan
- 53:44with like no like that. Yeah, that's not a thing.
- 53:48Like it makes it doubly hysterical.
- 53:51I think it's I think it's great. I think it's mokey's really
- 53:53funny in those scenes. Red is ziplining through the
- 54:00Great Hall and she smacks right into a giant doozer.
- 54:03Construction and Falls. Her tail is all zigzaggy bent.
- 54:08We later, find out that it's sprained.
- 54:11I like that she says, like please don't tell me that was my
- 54:13belubius and pogi runs in blows his whistle.
- 54:17That was your belubius. We are spared, the get smart
- 54:20joke of I asked you not to tell me that but we got it.
- 54:25We knew it. This is where we get our first
- 54:29song of the episode Red sings. Once upon a time, I knew my name
- 54:33which came from the original series, the episode gobos
- 54:36discovery. That one was sung by Gobo.
- 54:41He's questioning whether or not he wants to continue being an
- 54:43Explorer. So I guess both of these
- 54:45episodes are about fraggles, having these identity crises.
- 54:48Mmm, red is backed up by two interesting-looking puppets,
- 54:54which I recently learned And are called the sneels do that.
- 55:00Yeah. Like these colorful rat carrot
- 55:02creatures. The only made a couple of like
- 55:05blink and you'll miss it appearances on Fraggle Rock.
- 55:08Like the only time I've ever seen them as like they're
- 55:11literally just passing through the screen.
- 55:14They were mostly used as one of those deals.
- 55:17Where are you? Yeah, I did the snails in that
- 55:19number. So it myself an end Hayward were
- 55:22worse kneeling in there and I think there's a giant clam back
- 55:25there too. That's also singing backup.
- 55:27I think that was Dan Garza. Yeah.
- 55:30It was, it was so wonderful to participate in that, that
- 55:35beautiful song and I know Karen had told us that she got choked
- 55:41up quite a few times, reporting that song, thinking of Jerry and
- 55:46their special friendship and how wonderful he was.
- 55:48And yeah, he was part of the stories that, you know, she
- 55:54would tell us You know, I think their bond was very special and
- 55:58that was very evident. So yeah, gorgeous song, I loved
- 56:02everything about that. Let the background vocals, I
- 56:04thought were the arrangement was beautiful.
- 56:09The lighting I thought was great and you know it's really for
- 56:13this iteration of the song that that moment of, if I'm not this,
- 56:18who am? I is so powerful and I think we
- 56:22can all relate to that. I think we've all had moments
- 56:24like that in our lives. So yeah.
- 56:27Beautiful song, beautiful. And Karen really does sing the
- 56:31heck out of it. Smells really a terrific
- 56:34performance. And yet as you say, you know,
- 56:37the question of, if I'm not this, who am I?
- 56:38That's pretty deep for a kids show.
- 56:40Yes, it is. Yeah, we're I think Fraggle Rock
- 56:44is always gone there, you know, in the original show and this
- 56:47one too. But in a more in a more modern
- 56:51and updated way. Yeah.
- 56:55The song ends Mochi enters to console.
- 56:58Red, red. Ask sir, how do you help when
- 57:01you feel helpless which man that breaks my heart.
- 57:04Mmm. And then she blows her nose on
- 57:06Mochi shirt, which doesn't exactly break my heart, but it's
- 57:10a little sad. And again, you got a great
- 57:14deadpan response from okey, just like, okay, this is happening.
- 57:17All right, let it all out. Oh yeah, it was fun mokey.
- 57:23Takes her to the mood ring which He's a cool-looking cave with
- 57:27these reflective cracks in the walls.
- 57:30That's got to be real, right? Like that's a real case that
- 57:33they built it. Absolutely is we we joked around
- 57:37that it looked like the inside of large.
- 57:40Marvin stomach. We'll see if that makes the
- 57:45final version, but I kept saying that and finally, you're going
- 57:50to our Wrangler extraordinary was like, please stop saying
- 57:54that please. Now I can't unsee that.
- 57:56We can't unsee. It's kind of a little more fiber
- 58:03awful. I just love all these so you
- 58:06cannot see it right? You think it's right?
- 58:09Yeah, percent. But all of these cave seeds are
- 58:12just gorgeous. The set design on the show.
- 58:14I can't get over it. Well, beautiful, and I love the
- 58:18way this cave looks particular with those.
- 58:20I don't know how else to say that those like opaque cracks in
- 58:23the walls, that like the kind of shiny.
- 58:26Their kind of reflective really gives it a different look than
- 58:29the other case that we've seen on the show.
- 58:31Yeah. There they have a like their
- 58:35holes with lights behind and then different color gels over
- 58:39them. And the lights were a little
- 58:40warm when they're in the islands because you know there's modular
- 58:44pieces Is that that move around that puppeteers can get into, or
- 58:48behind or something like that? So yeah, those lights were a
- 58:51little toasty that was a toast that was great and bit tricky,
- 58:57because they're so scratchy though, a lot of the rocks of
- 59:01Fraggle Rock that the fraggles could get stuck to them.
- 59:05Oh, it's like like velcro almost.
- 59:07So we would have to be really careful when we were actually on
- 59:10the rocks and it wasn't clothing between, you know, so You didn't
- 59:15want to Spill the fabric of the of the fraggles.
- 59:20So, yeah, it was when monkeys sitting with her hands on the
- 59:22Rocco's employee to get that hand off of the rock.
- 59:27So it was a bit of a trick that we owned navigate throughout.
- 59:32Yeah. Yeah.
- 59:32Like sitting on the other cars in summer, you know?
- 59:35Yes right. Yeah.
- 59:40Mokey is going to teach read how to meditate, which does not seem
- 59:44Scooby up Reds alley, mokey shows her how it's done and
- 59:48there's cool lighting change in the cave, which read takes note
- 59:52of these colorful blobs. Start to float around mokey.
- 59:58It makes it look like she has. She has control over the
- 1:00:01Infinity Stones or something. They are thought bulbs and
- 1:00:06things like worry, stress, happiness, and fear and mochi
- 1:00:09can acknowledge them and let them pass.
- 1:00:12And that's what gives her this feeling.
- 1:00:14Of peacefulness. Yes, I thought what a great
- 1:00:19description of what meditation is for kids?
- 1:00:23Yeah, that was tremendous because, you know, if you've
- 1:00:26ever met if you've ever meditated, Joe you'll know that
- 1:00:29thoughts will fly by like like like like clouds and you and you
- 1:00:34supposed to say, like okay that's a thought, it's just, you
- 1:00:37know, I'm a release it, let it go and get back to being
- 1:00:39centered in the here and now and trying to keep your mind as free
- 1:00:42as possible. But yeah, that I thought Comes
- 1:00:44in and you're supposed to let it go.
- 1:00:46But but to have a bit of visual there, I thought was just really
- 1:00:50cool and just a great way to to show kids what medication
- 1:00:53actually is absolutely for a good or not good.
- 1:00:57But right, it wasn't good for read.
- 1:01:00Well and I am very much like red in this situation where like I
- 1:01:04can't like you told me to close my eyes.
- 1:01:05I got a million thoughts that are that are flying through my
- 1:01:07head, there's no identifying them and letting them pass.
- 1:01:10It's just like, I can't shut it off.
- 1:01:13So I need something like red. Where I'm gonna do this.
- 1:01:16Other thing that will help me Focus.
- 1:01:19Like it's an actual active activity and that's how I can
- 1:01:23kind of get myself back on track.
- 1:01:25So I very much related to read in these scenes and it's true
- 1:01:31because she is already bored, like, she just sitting there and
- 1:01:36so fun. This team is so fun to do.
- 1:01:38I thought on paper, it was just hilarious and I to get to have
- 1:01:44mochi. Get a little more agitated as it
- 1:01:46goes because you're trying to know, you can really benefit is
- 1:01:48to just throw rocks at the end again just, you know, better
- 1:01:54this time right? Just don't mess it up.
- 1:01:57It's also funny. And just just such perfect
- 1:02:01capsulation encapsulation of this friendship.
- 1:02:04This relationships between these two, right, and the right
- 1:02:07shoulder to the juxtaposition between these two, very
- 1:02:10different characters, who love each other very much.
- 1:02:12But, but yes, but their energy level Our are not exactly on the
- 1:02:16same, the same place. Yeah, so fun.
- 1:02:20And it's funny because like I at first, I thought like there's no
- 1:02:22way Reds gonna get into this because she's got no eyelids,
- 1:02:25her eyes are on top of her head and she always looks shocked,
- 1:02:28but she grows eyelids for a minute.
- 1:02:30So she could try meditating and that did make me think.
- 1:02:35I'm something I want to ask you is mokey's, one of the few
- 1:02:37characters who has retractable eyelids.
- 1:02:40How do they work as a puppeteer? And Is it something that you
- 1:02:47particularly enjoy using? Or is it more of like an added
- 1:02:50challenge to to playing the character?
- 1:02:54I love an iMac. I had my first iMac on another
- 1:03:00Hanson. Coppage animals.
- 1:03:02It was very different. It was a cable one.
- 1:03:05So it didn't have a battery or any servos or moving Parts.
- 1:03:08Well, it was moving Parts, but it wasn't electronic.
- 1:03:11This version was a battery pack. So, The service you made a bit
- 1:03:15of noise. But boy, I just love it because,
- 1:03:19you know, you can get so much expression and I feel like it
- 1:03:23just adds to the to conveying the emotion to conveying humor,
- 1:03:29you know, all of that stuff and I Johnny said, she's got a
- 1:03:33really cool iMac that's like, okay, you're gonna give me a toy
- 1:03:38to using it. So, I'll just, I'm just gonna
- 1:03:40push until someone tells me to back off and no one ever did.
- 1:03:43So, So yeah, I I'll work and iMac because it's just another
- 1:03:49great tool to have as a puppeteer.
- 1:03:51And when you, when you can, you know, things like, you know,
- 1:03:56like in the moment where she is consoling, red mokey is
- 1:03:59consoling, red and then, and then read, you know, blows her
- 1:04:02nose in the dress. I can pop the eyes open to go.
- 1:04:04Okay. Yeah, no problem.
- 1:04:06And you know, but in the mouth a little bit said, yeah, you you
- 1:04:09little punk. So, just just all of those
- 1:04:13things. Just another toy to use to do
- 1:04:17what you need to do. I just love it but yeah, not
- 1:04:20every fraggle is so lucky. So we would of course, stop tape
- 1:04:24pop some eyelids on red or whomever and right.
- 1:04:27And then there was you, it's especially cool that mokey's
- 1:04:31iMac, doesn't only go up for surprise but they can close all
- 1:04:36the way all the way. Is that right?
- 1:04:38Yep. Yeah.
- 1:04:39That's pretty neat. Yeah, so the neutral is like if
- 1:04:42I like if I let go of the Mac, it's 75, 80 percent, that's her
- 1:04:47neutral of open and so that I can push it and it will go up to
- 1:04:51opening 100% And then pull it the opposite way.
- 1:04:54It's a wheel, a little wheel on a bike, a bike handle, and then
- 1:04:57go the opposite way. And you know, for set and
- 1:05:00anywhere in between for sadness or yeah, kind of place you and
- 1:05:04or you know anything so yeah, love it and it's like a wish all
- 1:05:09puppets had them the oh yeah, I'm sure.
- 1:05:12I assume it's attached to your arm rod.
- 1:05:14Add a her arm Rod. It is yes to her, left arm rod
- 1:05:18and it can detach. So there would be times where I
- 1:05:22would have the, just the I make in my hand.
- 1:05:25And Kira, having both of mokey's, hands.
- 1:05:27I think one of the promos that you see, I think the BTS was on
- 1:05:32social media and you see that it's that I think the theme song
- 1:05:37dedicated to a claw. So yeah.
- 1:05:39Yes, Akira has both and I just have the iMac.
- 1:05:42So so yeah, we would, we would shake things up.
- 1:05:44Very things that way. It's great.
- 1:05:47I love it. So red is not relaxing at all.
- 1:05:52This is not working unsurprisingly so she gives up
- 1:05:55she leaves. The cave will get back to them
- 1:05:58in a second, but Gobo Wembley and boober have one more plan to
- 1:06:01scare the mughals, as we said, it was this high energy scene
- 1:06:06where they've got this whole Illustrated plan that involves
- 1:06:10blue pie a smoke bomb giant Wembley claiming that He ate
- 1:06:15boober, it's foolproof. It's got to work.
- 1:06:19But of course, the The Fog he's the that they're using for smoke
- 1:06:22bombs, they they're actually grease berries when we drop some
- 1:06:26Global slips on them and he collides right into boober,
- 1:06:28boober takes a pie in the face, comedy classic, and it makes
- 1:06:33them were girls laugh, which actually cures them of their
- 1:06:35hiccups. This is basically Monsters, Inc,
- 1:06:39rules mokey, Takes note of this and she says, oh well, you tried
- 1:06:47to force your plan that didn't work.
- 1:06:49And that's what I've been doing to read, which is a an
- 1:06:51interesting observation for her. You can't push too hard.
- 1:06:56That's right. Again a great lesson for
- 1:06:59grown-ups, like me as well as is for kids that and then going
- 1:07:04into that great song and I love that, she gets this lightbulb
- 1:07:08moment and learns this lesson and then the song happens right
- 1:07:12up right after that so it's really a continuation of that
- 1:07:15thought. I thought that was very
- 1:07:16interesting and that's a great song to but just yeah it's just
- 1:07:22you need to Let other people figure they're out their own way
- 1:07:26out. If they ask for help great.
- 1:07:28Be sure to you know offer that help but you know we'll all get
- 1:07:32there in our own time. So great, great, great song, I
- 1:07:35love that song. Yeah.
- 1:07:37So the song is called no two paths and I think I'd have to
- 1:07:42revisit all the the songs from the show but this has got some
- 1:07:45of maybe my favorite choreography of any song that
- 1:07:48we've seen so far. Mainly because first of all the
- 1:07:52choreography is very simple. It's just The fraggles moving
- 1:07:56swaying like there's nothing really technically different
- 1:08:01about it but there's like a what's the word like a symmetry
- 1:08:07to it where you know, a character will pop up behind
- 1:08:09another one and then someone pop up on the other side and then
- 1:08:12there's, you know, five fraggles on either side that are all
- 1:08:15swing in different ways and passing by each other.
- 1:08:17And, you know, there's a point where Mochi and Gobo drop down
- 1:08:21and then pop up in the back behind the myrtles.
- 1:08:25I think it's just a cool. It's very like visually.
- 1:08:27It's just a really cool way to Showcase that song rather than
- 1:08:29just like having the character sit there and sing it and maybe
- 1:08:32sway a little bit. Yeah, yeah, I love that.
- 1:08:35That was a, that was a sweaty day.
- 1:08:37Also, it was later in the shoot. So it was a little warmer but
- 1:08:40Johnny said I'm going to really push the choreography on this
- 1:08:42number. I'm like bring it.
- 1:08:44I love puppy choreography. So I'm like the harder the
- 1:08:47better just bring it on and you know that puppets popping up in
- 1:08:51the front and back. That's that's a good old.
- 1:08:54Texas, which I think it was Andy Hayward and a meager.
- 1:08:58See, I think we're were also go and mochi and that seems.
- 1:09:03Yeah, that's cool. And yeah and stuff.
- 1:09:05That was a fun day. How many monkeys are there?
- 1:09:07How many monkey puppets? Did you have on set?
- 1:09:09Well, there's the water version of all the puppets.
- 1:09:13So I think there are 23 total of each of the fraggle five, so to
- 1:09:20Classic puppets, one water puppet, right.
- 1:09:24I think all that can also be a technically a stunt puppet.
- 1:09:27So right? I think so I'm not the official
- 1:09:30person to ask but from what I gather that's it.
- 1:09:33Yeah, so it's good to know. It's always interesting, the
- 1:09:36song ends and Wembley hiccups and everyone kind of gives them
- 1:09:40a look and he says, don't worry. It was just a one-er that's a
- 1:09:43nice little bit. Yeah, mokey apologizes to read
- 1:09:49for for trying to help her. I guess we're trying to teach
- 1:09:52her how to meditate She realizes that she just can't push read
- 1:09:57into meditation. It has to be her choice that she
- 1:09:59wants. This kind of help and you know,
- 1:10:01red explains like you know she's an action fraggle.
- 1:10:03This is how she clears her head and you know, she likes to dive
- 1:10:07headfirst yell will be hit the water and then just let
- 1:10:11everything disappear and mochi realizes like that.
- 1:10:14Actually does sound really peaceful.
- 1:10:16She didn't see it before and we get this great moment where read
- 1:10:21closes her eyes and she is pretending that she's swimming.
- 1:10:23You can Arms moving like, she's doing the brushstroke and they
- 1:10:28kind of do like a possible dream sharing that we've seen the
- 1:10:31fraggles do before. Or they can, you know, enter
- 1:10:34each other's dreams where Mochi and red are swimming underwater
- 1:10:38with the merkel's and it is very calm and peaceful, it's exactly
- 1:10:43what red describes and it's not something where suddenly red is
- 1:10:50basically doing a very quiet, peaceful meditation, it's still
- 1:10:52very active. But it's, you can also see how
- 1:10:57this could be her version of of a meditation and of a hard Focus
- 1:11:02for her. Absolutely, it is.
- 1:11:06And I love that the audience is seeing Reds version of
- 1:11:09meditation because they've already seen mokey's version,
- 1:11:12but this is what meditation is for.
- 1:11:14Read It Centers her it makes her calm and peaceful and and then
- 1:11:18you know Mochi comes into her world in in Reds point of view.
- 1:11:24You know, and that's why when you come back and you see them
- 1:11:27in their room, red is swimming, but monkey isn't because in
- 1:11:31mokey's version which we don't see, they are just, you know,
- 1:11:34possibly being still together. But yeah, I love that and that's
- 1:11:38just going back to the no two paths.
- 1:11:40This is this is Reds way of meditating and achieving that
- 1:11:44goal. If you will of being calm and
- 1:11:46peaceful and mokey's, version is a different path.
- 1:11:50So, yeah. That was beautiful.
- 1:11:52It's always tricky. Remember when we were shooting
- 1:11:54Underwater stuff. It's always tricky though.
- 1:11:56It's like, well, can you turn can Mochi turn around even more
- 1:11:59to see red like you can, but you're going to see this.
- 1:12:01You're going to see a blue bicep laughing, but a body soap.
- 1:12:05So that's when you see mokey's body.
- 1:12:08That's literally as far as I could turn without, huh?
- 1:12:11But I blocking her. But yeah, just one of the tricks
- 1:12:13about blue screen. Nothing blue can cross.
- 1:12:15The puppet. So already has to be behind so,
- 1:12:20but Jazz fun day with fans, making the making it look like
- 1:12:23water. Water cool.
- 1:12:25Yeah, but I thought it turned out beautifully.
- 1:12:27I was really really pleased with how it turned out when you film
- 1:12:31that scene. Was it done?
- 1:12:32Kind of the same way. It was we were talking about
- 1:12:34what the gorgs where you could see live the backgrounds and the
- 1:12:39water effects or was it just we're just shooting this on blue
- 1:12:42screen and someone's going to do the rest of it in post?
- 1:12:45Yeah that one was we did not to have the background so and that
- 1:12:50was a less complicated shot so I don't think we necessarily
- 1:12:53needed it. For what we had to do.
- 1:12:56So yeah, most of the time we did not have that it was really just
- 1:13:00for those super complicated ones where we needed to know where
- 1:13:04things were. Yeah.
- 1:13:06Yeah. Well that brings us to the end
- 1:13:08of this Fraggle. Rock episode.
- 1:13:10We're do you have any other memories from this one that you
- 1:13:12want to share or even something from another episode of back to
- 1:13:15the rock that we didn't get to? Oh gosh, I love those big
- 1:13:20question. Really, I mean, you know, I can
- 1:13:22just say that this Was the, I've been so lucky in my career but
- 1:13:28this is the show. That's just my absolute favorite
- 1:13:32where I think the reading the scripts and hearing those songs
- 1:13:36from Harvey, Alex. And Matt like the show is in
- 1:13:39such good hands, Johnny and Hallie just being dynamos and
- 1:13:44you know, making it happen and just the tone on set.
- 1:13:48The crew we had the cast, we had to me where everything was just
- 1:13:51great and you know, not 100% perfect.
- 1:13:54We're human and we have our our foibles and good days and bad
- 1:13:58days. But man, we just were just kind
- 1:14:00of annoyingly crazy about each other.
- 1:14:03So there was a whole lot of love under the frame.
- 1:14:06So I hope that that carries through.
- 1:14:09But we're all just so pleased with how it all turned out and
- 1:14:14loved the process. Love the product.
- 1:14:17Love the response and grateful to you guys, too, for for, for
- 1:14:22liking it, and promoting promoting, It?
- 1:14:24Well, you made it easy, you made a product that's very, very
- 1:14:28likable. Well you know it's a big few
- 1:14:31when when it the reviews are good and responses, good, so
- 1:14:36we're all yes super happy. Well, we are super happy that
- 1:14:41the show has really been as phenomenal as it is and as true
- 1:14:45to the original as it is, which was obviously very important to
- 1:14:48the the Diehard fans like us and we're really grateful for you.
- 1:14:54For being here, for being a part of this show for bringing so
- 1:14:57much life into Mochi and cotter pin and the rest of the cast,
- 1:15:01you're just doing a phenomenal job and we're going to keep our
- 1:15:04fingers crossed for more episodes and more fraggle stuff
- 1:15:08coming along but, but yes, but also thank you for being here on
- 1:15:11the podcast. It was just a treat to chat with
- 1:15:14you today. Well, thank you.
- 1:15:16It's my pleasure. Thank you.
- 1:15:19No good. Well that brings us to the end
- 1:15:22of another episode of Fraggle talk.
- 1:15:23But Stay tuned as tough pigs own.
- 1:15:26Beth cook talks more about the themes of this episode in our
- 1:15:29dive deeper segment coming up right now.
- 1:15:42Welcome to dig deeper. This is Beth cook and I am
- 1:15:45joined once again by executive producer and president
- 1:15:47television and the Jim Henson company Hallie Stanford.
- 1:15:50Wow, talking about Deep dive, Well we're going to do a deep
- 1:15:56dive into deep dive. Love this episode because really
- 1:16:00you know, one of the biggest tools and I think that we can
- 1:16:04all see it out there is meditation and for calming
- 1:16:10ourselves for connecting with ourselves.
- 1:16:13And what happens also, when we have to sit still and we don't
- 1:16:17want to sit still, I think actually I think that one so
- 1:16:21much harder and that's why this story is about red, having to
- 1:16:24sit still. And so I just love that what I
- 1:16:30Mochi has a lesson in this to but really what we're trying to
- 1:16:32teach here to kids and parents is different, people have
- 1:16:36different ways of relaxing and of finding their reset button.
- 1:16:45And so one way may not work for one person and another person,
- 1:16:51and they work a different way. So, I know that's true.
- 1:16:53Particularly for me, when it comes, Um's to meditation.
- 1:16:57I actually love medicham very Mochi in that sense, but then I
- 1:17:01have plenty of friends that they find great meditation.
- 1:17:05They cannot sit still, the thoughts are buzzing, they don't
- 1:17:08like it, but they feel it when they're playing sports when
- 1:17:11they're playing basketball there in a flow.
- 1:17:14Yes. And the stress is, you know,
- 1:17:17going, you know, going away when they do these things.
- 1:17:20So, yes, this is a story about red.
- 1:17:23You know, hurting herself and healing but Really at the heart
- 1:17:26of it, it's about how do we, how do we reset?
- 1:17:29How do we remove that? And this very, very anxious time
- 1:17:32that we live, you know, we all we all have like skinned her
- 1:17:36knee or, you know, have to slow down his per sec.
- 1:17:41But I also think we all need to recharge more than ever.
- 1:17:46It's a very anxious world. It's a lot of toxic stress
- 1:17:50globally and the workplace at home and so we all have to hit
- 1:17:54those reset buttons. And we may need to do it in a
- 1:17:56different way. Again, I love to hike, that
- 1:18:00really relaxes me. I think that my son thinks that
- 1:18:03hiking is is a punishment. He's like you're punishing me
- 1:18:07right now, like this is a punishment, how does he, how
- 1:18:11does he relaxed handball? And video games?
- 1:18:14That's it. He needs to go to his boy cave
- 1:18:16and just reset, and do that. And then, come on out and feel
- 1:18:19fresh. So we all have a different way
- 1:18:21of doing it. And that's really what this
- 1:18:23episode is about. Mmm, And I love that.
- 1:18:27It's so relatable that, both red and cotter.
- 1:18:30Pin are coming at this episode from a place of.
- 1:18:35I want to help there's so many problems and I just need to
- 1:18:39power through it, right? And it turns out at the end of
- 1:18:44the day that if you give yourself permission to rest that
- 1:18:50that can lead to New Perspectives, which can lead to
- 1:18:54new ideas and And you end up being more effective than if you
- 1:18:57had just kept trying to power through it.
- 1:18:59Yeah, I think that that conversation for her to take
- 1:19:02that, take that break, that came out of Jim Henson himself taking
- 1:19:08like walks when he needs to think and problem solve.
- 1:19:11I think we were like, yeah you know, everybody needs a
- 1:19:14different like break to come back and get that that light
- 1:19:17bulb and I'm I'm pretty sure that that's where that
- 1:19:20particular one came from. Like let's just like change what
- 1:19:22we're doing is change it up and come back.
- 1:19:25I think that was something that he did.
- 1:19:27So I'll have to confirm that with a fax, but I'm pretty sure
- 1:19:31I'm like accessing my memory when we were brainstorming
- 1:19:35different approaches to the same topic and I think that was some,
- 1:19:38I think that was a Lisa Henson share.
- 1:19:40Oh, I love that and wrench doozer.
- 1:19:43Gets this great line. Sometimes you got to put down
- 1:19:45your tools and come back later with fresh screws.
- 1:19:51It's amazing memory for lines. I have a memory for lives.
- 1:19:56I do it's all written down. This is in my notes.
- 1:19:59Oh my God. I love it.
- 1:20:00But it's so funny. It's so good.
- 1:20:02I'm telling you these writers are everything.
- 1:20:04They are everything. They're so great.
- 1:20:07Just wanted to say that. I love how the lesson in this
- 1:20:11episode goes. So many layers deep like red,
- 1:20:13learns it from mokey mokey learns it from Uber and Gobo and
- 1:20:17Wembley. They learn it by accident and
- 1:20:19cotter, pin learned it from wrench and it's just all
- 1:20:22connected in that great Fraggle Rock.
- 1:20:26I know I love it when I love the boys in that episode.
- 1:20:29They're very very funny in that episode very silly.
- 1:20:33You know some of the episodes had to be heavier than others.
- 1:20:36Right. Like this one was liked this.
- 1:20:39One was light and we had a lot of fun with that and you do have
- 1:20:44to have that balance. When you're mapping out show,
- 1:20:47you have your heavier episodes, like the Uber discovering his
- 1:20:51belubius close, and then you got to have your dirty dice.
- 1:20:57And I love that. We get to see visually both for
- 1:21:02Mochi and for read what relaxing looks like for them, we get
- 1:21:05these wonderful thought, bulbs for Mochi.
- 1:21:09And oh, here comes a thought and I acknowledge it and accept the
- 1:21:12message that it's bringing me and then it goes on its way, and
- 1:21:15Reggie's, can't do that. That's right.
- 1:21:18It's that it's that monkey mind, right?
- 1:21:19Like there's some kids and some people that are just like I
- 1:21:23can't I can't I don't know what to do with that and actually the
- 1:21:25real solution is just Just Let It Go.
- 1:21:27Like just it's here. You can see it.
- 1:21:30Let it have that chatter and then push it on but it's harder
- 1:21:34for her and it does smoking telling her just relax has the
- 1:21:37opposite effect and it has the opposite effect.
- 1:21:41I agree, I hate it. When people say that to me, who
- 1:21:43doesn't hate it? When somebody says, just come on
- 1:21:45and relax. You need to calm down.
- 1:21:47You need to calm down. Yeah, exactly.
- 1:21:51That doesn't work. Yep.
