Speaker 1: Taking a Walk Nashville.
• 0:02
Speaker 2: Hey, it's Sarah Harrelson. You're host of the Taking a
• 0:04
Speaker 2: Walk Nashville podcast, and today I have not just one,
• 0:08
Speaker 2: but two artists joining me on today's episode. If you
• 0:13
Speaker 2: don't already know them, you need to know them, you
• 0:16
Speaker 2: need to check out their music. First up, I will
• 0:20
Speaker 2: have Red Faye on. She's from Oklahoma City, she's here
• 0:24
Speaker 2: now here in Nashville.
• 0:26
Speaker 3: She has a edge of rock, country, R and B voice.
• 0:31
Speaker 3: She's also the great niece of songwriter Stony Edwards. You
• 0:35
Speaker 3: may know his song She's My Rock that was cut
• 0:38
Speaker 3: by George Jones and Brenda Lee. I have a great
• 0:42
Speaker 3: conversation coming up with her, and stick around because after
• 0:46
Speaker 3: my conversation with Red Faye, we're going right into my
• 0:50
Speaker 3: conversation with country singer songwriter Drew Taylor. He's from Ontario, Canada.
• 0:57
Speaker 3: His father played along country legends like ge Straight and
• 1:01
Speaker 3: Kenny Rogers. Drew actually spent his early years fronting a
• 1:06
Speaker 3: screamo band and now he's embracing country music. It's a
• 1:11
Speaker 3: great story. I love chatting with these artists today. I
• 1:16
Speaker 3: hope you will join me as well.
• 1:22
Speaker 1: Welcome to Taking a Walk Nashville. With your hosts singer
• 1:25
  Speaker 1: songwriter Sarah Harrelson.
• 1:28
Speaker 2: Hi, everyone, this is Sarah Harrelson, your host taking a
• 1:32
Speaker 2: walk in Nashville and today our guest is a powerhouse
• 1:35
Speaker 2: talent who was rewriting.
• 1:37
Speaker 4: The rules of country music.
• 1:39
Speaker 2: Born in Oklahoma City and raised in Boulder, Colorado, she
• 1:42
Speaker 2: grew up in a home filled with thousands of vinyl records,
• 1:45
Speaker 2: a foundation that helped her develop a sound that captures
• 1:49
Speaker 2: the edge of rock, soul of R and B, and
• 1:51
Speaker 2: the heart of country. She is the great niece of
• 1:54
Speaker 2: songwriter Stony Edwards, who penned She's My Rock cut by.
• 1:58
Speaker 4: George Jones and Brenda Lee.
• 2:00
Speaker 2: Red Faye is stepping into the spotlight with her debut single,
• 2:03
Speaker 2: Everyone Button, and her voice has been described as a
• 2:07
Speaker 2: rare blend of Stevine X, Janis Joplin and Tina Turner.
• 2:11
Speaker 2: Red Faye, thank you so much for being oh my
• 2:13
  Speaker 2: God today.
• 2:13
Speaker 4: Thank you so much for having you today. I'm so excited.
• 2:17
Speaker 4: I see why you have this stop. You are good. Yeah,
• 2:20
  Speaker 4: thank you.
• 2:21
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 2:21
Speaker 2: We're here at country Radio Simon Arms today and your
• 2:25
Speaker 2: new single, Everyone Button is coming out soon on April seventeenth.
• 2:30
Speaker 2: You have been working on this song was producer hamsel Lee,
• 2:34
Speaker 2: who is an incredible R and B pedigree with hits
• 2:37
Speaker 2: per color me bad. How did his R and B
• 2:40
Speaker 2: background influence the sound on this song that you're bringing
• 2:44
Speaker 2: into the country space.
• 2:45
Speaker 5: What a fantastic and appropriate question.
• 2:49
  Speaker 4: Uh.
• 2:50
Speaker 5: Getting in the studio with this song really was a
• 2:52
Speaker 5: thinker for him, a scratcher, because I think when he
• 2:57
Speaker 5: comes to a producer listening to a singer from that
• 3:00
Speaker 5: he gets where the song really is, where the heart
• 3:03
Speaker 5: of it is. And I think when he heard this
• 3:05
Speaker 5: very earthy country tone that was coming from me, but
• 3:09
Speaker 5: also the song itself has a little bit of a cosmopolitan.
• 3:13
Speaker 4: Side to it, so I think he put that polish
• 3:15
Speaker 4: in there. But it is also such a very.
• 3:18
Speaker 5: Staunch, ritualistic country sound, and so that's why we just
• 3:24
Speaker 5: love it, because it brings some dimension.
• 3:27
Speaker 4: To a song, sort of like something that Pertina.
• 3:30
Speaker 5: Mcgride might have done, you know, and it's it comes
• 3:34
Speaker 5: out when you hear it and you want to hear
• 3:36
Speaker 5: it again because you're like, I want to experience what
• 3:38
Speaker 5: that is really trying to tell me, because it does
• 3:41
Speaker 5: go a main path and then it has some other
• 3:43
  Speaker 5: surprises too, So I think it's a definitely a collaboration
• 3:47
Speaker 5: between the producer and myself and the writer of the song,
• 3:51
Speaker 5: which was Trish Goldberg.
• 3:52
Speaker 2: Wow, Yeah, I'm so excited to hear it. That's your
• 3:55
Speaker 2: new single coming out. Everyone but me, and as I
• 3:59
Speaker 2: mentioned earlier, are your great uncles Tony Edwards.
• 4:02
Speaker 4: He was a true.
• 4:02
Speaker 2: Pioneer as one of the first black musicians to make
• 4:06
Speaker 2: a massive impact on country music, and he explicitly advised
• 4:10
Speaker 2: you to keep the torch blazing. So how does that
• 4:13
Speaker 2: responsibility weigh on you as you navigate the industry today.
• 4:17
Speaker 5: Well, for sure, when I wasn't and I kind of
• 4:21
Speaker 5: left the country scene for a bit, it stayed in
• 4:24
Speaker 5: my head. I think now that I'm back, if I
• 4:27
Speaker 5: certainly feel him walking beside me at the giant that
• 4:30
Speaker 5: he is, and his spirit absolutely sores inside of this
• 4:36
Speaker 5: whole family legacy that we're bringing, you know, want to
• 4:39
Speaker 5: bring to small center focus again. I would love one
• 4:42
Speaker 5: day to be able to do a tribute to uncle,
• 4:44
Speaker 5: because there's so many people that absolutely remember She's my
• 4:48
Speaker 5: rock and Rose cuind of Glasses and so many beautiful
• 4:51
Speaker 5: songs that he brought to the palette with his energy,
• 4:54
Speaker 5: and that that was something that he instilled in me
• 4:56
Speaker 5: is that you know, you're here to bring forth who
• 4:59
Speaker 5: you are, entertain people in a way and a spirit
• 5:01
Speaker 5: that brings some closeness to the music, some intimacy to
• 5:06
Speaker 5: what you're doing. And he was a class act for sure.
• 5:09
Speaker 5: So I'm grateful for so many things him included.
• 5:14
  Speaker 4: That's so special.
• 5:15
Speaker 2: I would love to hear your take on some of
• 5:17
Speaker 2: those songs and your child at Home and Boulder it
• 5:21
Speaker 2: was filled with a vinyl collection of nearly seven thousand albums, Wow,
• 5:26
Speaker 2: ranging from Miles Davis to Dan Fogelberg. How did that
• 5:30
Speaker 2: damn it of great self? He develop a sound that
• 5:33
Speaker 2: critics are already comparing to iconic voices like Stevie Nix
• 5:38
  Speaker 2: and Tina Turner.
• 5:40
  Speaker 4: That's a big question.
• 5:41
Speaker 5: But certainly, growing up in Bolder, you had so many
• 5:46
Speaker 5: influences outside of them too, which were a lot of
• 5:49
Speaker 5: soft rock and rock and even hard acid, you know,
• 5:53
Speaker 5: I just and country too.
• 5:55
Speaker 4: I mean, John Denver was something you pretty much woke
• 5:57
  Speaker 4: up to.
• 5:58
Speaker 5: That was the national Yeah, But for a certain my
• 6:03
Speaker 5: father made it evident that music is such a part
• 6:06
Speaker 5: of the soul and such a part of who you
• 6:08
Speaker 5: are and helping you develop even a personality of yourself really,
• 6:13
Speaker 5: you know, discerning what you like. You might like what
• 6:17
Speaker 5: it sounds like, but what do you sing in your soul?
• 6:20
Speaker 5: And so I think that helped define that part of me.
• 6:24
Speaker 5: And I think the rest of those other things that
• 6:26
  Speaker 5: was that's a that's a gift.
• 6:28
Speaker 4: I don't have anything to do with that.
• 6:29
Speaker 5: And I'm so grateful that people think that it does
• 6:33
Speaker 5: resemble this or that, because I know those are people
• 6:35
  Speaker 5: that I truly.
• 6:36
  Speaker 4: Adore in music.
• 6:38
Speaker 2: There are some of your country influences growing up, So
• 6:41
Speaker 2: let's just start with Patsy Klein.
• 6:42
Speaker 5: Yeah, and my uncle for sure. Sometimes when I sing,
• 6:46
Speaker 5: I'm definitely like, what are you.
• 6:47
Speaker 4: Doing in a studio with me? Uncle? You know, it's
• 6:49
Speaker 4: thinking I hear coming through me.
• 6:50
Speaker 5: But I love Patsy because of the smoothness of her
• 6:53
Speaker 5: elegant voice and the same time she could get rough
• 6:56
Speaker 5: and down into it.
• 6:58
Speaker 4: And I love even Tanya Tucker. I loved the Juds.
• 7:03
  Speaker 5: I loved Garth's things and Reva's things. I loved how
• 7:08
Speaker 5: Riba always made it her own no matter what it was.
• 7:12
Speaker 4: So these are all people that resonate with me until today.
• 7:16
Speaker 2: Yeah, you grew up around so much music and subgenres.
• 7:20
Speaker 2: What initially brought you from Colorado to Nashville.
• 7:24
Speaker 5: Honestly the people that I'm with, you know, there's such
• 7:28
Speaker 5: a big help, and I'm so grateful to be a
• 7:31
Speaker 5: part of what they are doing. And this is the time,
• 7:35
Speaker 5: and so we are here, and I'm just so blessed
• 7:38
Speaker 5: to be here and happy to be here with my
• 7:40
Speaker 5: first single that's getting ready to drop everyone but me
• 7:43
Speaker 5: on April seventeenth, and so it was just time.
• 7:48
Speaker 2: You know, we are very excited that you're here in
• 7:51
Speaker 2: Nashville and you're also releasing a debut album this year.
• 7:54
  Speaker 4: Correct.
• 7:55
Speaker 2: Yes, yes, we're very excited to hear that. Did you
• 7:59
Speaker 2: record all of Itshville?
• 8:01
Speaker 5: I didn't record all of it in Nashville, but for
• 8:04
Speaker 5: certainly we will be recording some more of the songs
• 8:06
Speaker 5: that we're doing in Nashville.
• 8:07
Speaker 4: For sure. It's an iconic place to record.
• 8:11
Speaker 5: Recording here definitely makes you feel like you're part of
• 8:14
Speaker 5: the Nashville family that's all always growing and never expanding,
• 8:18
Speaker 5: and we want to be part of that growth and.
• 8:20
Speaker 4: Expansion for Nashville, for sure. Said what was.
• 8:24
Speaker 2: It like recording your debut album?
• 8:28
Speaker 4: It was you got to do it till you know
• 8:31
Speaker 4: that it's right. And so it was work.
• 8:34
Speaker 5: It wasn't just going in and you know it's it's
• 8:36
Speaker 5: a thinking thing every time you get ready to record
• 8:39
Speaker 5: a song and really present it to people, because it
• 8:43
Speaker 5: is something more than a song once it's you're out
• 8:46
Speaker 5: there performing it, it's a connection and so being in
• 8:49
Speaker 5: the studio you really need to think about what you're
• 8:52
  Speaker 5: trying to convey.
• 8:53
Speaker 2: For me, so absolutely, I'm excited to hear all the
• 8:56
Speaker 2: upcoming details about so Mild. Do you have a upcoming
• 9:00
Speaker 2: shows this year people can look forward to?
• 9:02
  Speaker 4: I do?
• 9:03
Speaker 5: I have something coming up in a couple of days.
• 9:05
Speaker 5: We're going to be at the Live Oak, which I
• 9:08
Speaker 5: know a lot of people have been there before, so
• 9:09
Speaker 5: it's a kind of iconic place to be.
• 9:12
Speaker 4: Looking very forward to that on Thursday.
• 9:14
Speaker 5: And then we have a big concert coming up in
• 9:16
Speaker 5: Jersey on April thirtieth, and that's going to be the
• 9:20
Speaker 5: first really initial big concert that we're opening with, and
• 9:23
Speaker 5: we'll start there nice.
• 9:25
  Speaker 4: That's so exciting.
• 9:26
Speaker 2: Where can people find you on social media and your
• 9:29
  Speaker 2: upcoming shows?
• 9:29
Speaker 4: I'm glad that you asked. You're so professional.
• 9:32
Speaker 5: I know you wouldn't forget you can find me at

• 10:00
Speaker 2: I have one last question for you. We are on
• 10:03
Speaker 2: Taking a Walk Nashville. So if you could take a
• 10:06
Speaker 2: walk through Music Row with your great uncle Stony today,
• 10:10
Speaker 2: what is one question you would most want to ask
• 10:14
Speaker 2: him on that walk?
• 10:15
Speaker 5: I would say, Uncle, what was a link performing at
• 10:19
Speaker 5: the Grand Old Operate?
• 10:22
Speaker 4: And when can we do that together? Yeah? It's beautiful.
• 10:26
Speaker 2: Well that's a wonderful answer to close out on red.
• 10:29
Speaker 2: Thank you so much for being on Taking a Walk
• 10:31
  Speaker 2: Nashville today.
• 10:32
Speaker 4: I appreciate it. Thank you for having me.
• 10:35
Speaker 1: We'll be right back with more of the Taking a
• 10:38
Speaker 1: Walk Nashville podcast. Welcome back to Taking a Walk Nashville.
• 10:46
Speaker 2: Our guest has a story that is anything but conventional.
• 10:50
Speaker 2: Hailing from Waterloo, Ontario, he grew up with a father
• 10:53
Speaker 2: who played alongside country legends like George Strait and Kenny Rogers.
• 10:58
Speaker 2: Yet he spent his early years fronting a scream oh
• 11:01
Speaker 2: band and sharing bills with heavy hitters like Under Oath
• 11:05
Speaker 2: and a Tray You, and he eventually balanced to life
• 11:08
Speaker 2: as a fireman and entrepreneur before realizing that music was
• 11:12
Speaker 2: the one thing he can no longer keep as a
• 11:14
Speaker 2: side hustle. Drew Taylor, thank you so much.
• 11:18
Speaker 4: For being here on taking a walk Nashville today.
• 11:20
Speaker 6: How are you thanks for having me? I'm great.
• 11:22
Speaker 2: Yeah, Well, you recently released a reimagined version of Favor
• 11:28
Speaker 2: drives You and I tonight, and your country version actually
• 11:32
Speaker 2: features Dave Favor. How did this remake and collaboration come about?
• 11:38
Speaker 7: Well, it was it was a song I listened to
• 11:42
Speaker 7: in high school and it's like everybody our age.
• 11:45
Speaker 6: Listened to and everybody knew it.
• 11:47
Speaker 7: It went platinum up there, and Dave's a good friend
• 11:49
Speaker 7: of mine, so I just gave him a call. I'm like,
• 11:52
Speaker 7: what do you think about countryfying this song? Because it
• 11:55
Speaker 7: was originally like an email song, kind of alternative rock
• 12:00
Speaker 7: and in the countryfided and it turned.
• 12:03
Speaker 2: Out really well, yeah, it's really fun listening to your
• 12:06
Speaker 2: version of it and you know, making a little bit
• 12:09
Speaker 2: more country. Speaking of how did you go from fronting
• 12:14
Speaker 2: a scream o band to country music? Did your father
• 12:18
Speaker 2: influence that decision or did you kind of find the
• 12:20
Speaker 2: path on your own?
• 12:21
Speaker 6: I kind of like kind of grew into it.
• 12:23
Speaker 7: You know, as you grow as an artist and as
• 12:26
Speaker 7: you grow as a man, you kind of I kind
• 12:28
Speaker 7: of pulled away from the the emo music and in
• 12:32
Speaker 7: the scream out and just country really resonated with me.
• 12:36
Speaker 6: And I still think I throw a little bit.
• 12:38
Speaker 7: Of that of that kind of emo vibe onto my music,
• 12:42
Speaker 7: so it still comes with me.
• 12:44
Speaker 2: Yeah, there's definitely a lot of rock influences in your
• 12:47
Speaker 2: country music still. Lately, you are going on the road
• 12:52
Speaker 2: with Corey March this May and Ontario for the Sorry
• 12:56
Speaker 2: for Nothing Tour. Are you excited to be performing back
• 12:59
  Speaker 2: in Canon Yeah?
• 13:01
Speaker 7: I love going back to Canada, but it's a great
• 13:03
Speaker 7: place to play a lot of country fans, so yeah,
• 13:07
Speaker 7: we're just super excited.
• 13:09
Speaker 2: Are you in Nashville most time these days or just
• 13:12
  Speaker 2: your sign?
• 13:12
  Speaker 6: Yeah?
• 13:13
Speaker 7: Yeah, we moved here five years ago, so any chance
• 13:16
Speaker 7: to get time to go back home and play for
• 13:19
Speaker 7: my fans up there.
• 13:20
  Speaker 6: It's it's exciting.
• 13:21
  Speaker 7: Yeah.
• 13:22
Speaker 2: Yeah, listeners can find tickets to those shows on your website.
• 13:27
Speaker 4: Speaking of shows and music.
• 13:29
Speaker 2: Can we expect more music from you this year?
• 13:32
  Speaker 6: Tons? More.
• 13:33
Speaker 7: We have a pretty heavy release schedule this year, so
• 13:36
Speaker 7: almost a song a month, so yeah, tons of music.
• 13:40
  Speaker 4: Oh, very cool.
• 13:41
Speaker 2: Have you been recording the music here in Nashville?
• 13:43
Speaker 7: We have yeah, yeah, nice, Yeah, lots of great songs
• 13:47
Speaker 7: and I've been saving my best songs for this moment
• 13:50
Speaker 7: right now. So so the listeners, the fans you have,
• 13:54
Speaker 7: there be a lot more music.
• 13:55
  Speaker 5: Yeah.
• 13:56
Speaker 2: We'll have to stay up today on your social media
• 13:59
Speaker 2: to see what's next. As mentioned, we're currently at country
• 14:04
Speaker 2: radio seminar in Nashville. Your music has had a lot
• 14:07
Speaker 2: of success on country radio. Did you grow up listening
• 14:10
Speaker 2: to country radio and Waterloo?
• 14:12
  Speaker 6: I did? I did.
• 14:13
Speaker 7: I was a big fan of a lot of country
• 14:15
Speaker 7: artists up there, and it's kind of a full circle
• 14:18
Speaker 7: moment when you moved to Nashville and there through your friends.
• 14:21
Speaker 2: So yeah, yeah, You've had a lot of success with
• 14:24
Speaker 2: your single You and I. Tonight, it just debuted at
• 14:27
Speaker 2: number fifty on independent country radio. It's climbing.
• 14:31
Speaker 8: Congrats on that and then you won the Boots and
• 14:34
Speaker 8: Hearts Emerging Artists Showcase as a wild card to hitting
• 14:38
Speaker 8: you know, number one on Sirius XM with whish Idea.
• 14:42
Speaker 2: And what has it been like seeing your music take
• 14:44
Speaker 2: off on country radio?
• 14:46
Speaker 6: It's kind of surreal.
• 14:49
Speaker 7: But you know, we're just putting out better songs every time.
• 14:52
Speaker 6: And yeah, I haven't been more excited.
• 14:56
  Speaker 5: Yeah.
• 14:56
Speaker 2: Yeah, well, we can't wait to see what's coming next.
• 15:00
Speaker 2: And Drew, we're on taking a walk in Nashville. If
• 15:03
Speaker 2: you could take a walk with anyone in Nashville.
• 15:06
Speaker 4: Who would it be?
• 15:09
Speaker 6: Anyone in Nashville. I take a walk with Willie Willy Nelson.
• 15:14
Speaker 4: Oh that's a good one. Yeah, yeah, do you know
• 15:16
Speaker 4: where you would take that walk?
• 15:18
Speaker 6: Probably around Percy Priest.
• 15:20
Speaker 7: Okay, yeah, yeah, take a walk with Lily around Percy
• 15:24
Speaker 7: Priest and listen to all the stories he's got.
• 15:26
Speaker 6: You know, I'm a big story guys, So.
• 15:28
Speaker 7: When I can hear some some cool stories, I'm always.
• 15:32
  Speaker 6: Down for that.
• 15:33
Speaker 2: Yeah, that would be a great walk for sure. Is
• 15:37
Speaker 2: listeners are tuning in and they want to know where
• 15:39
