- 0:00Speaker 1: It's time for the UConn football coaches show. Jason Candle,
- 0:03Speaker 1: of course, with us weekly to rehash what the Huskies
- 0:06Speaker 1: are up to. They come in at two and two
- 0:09Speaker 1: and coach a lot to digest after that tight game
- 0:12Speaker 1: at Miami, Ohio over the weekend. I mean, Huskies couldn't
- 0:17Speaker 1: get off to a better start. I mean, the opening eight,
- 0:19Speaker 1: nine minutes, you were dominant there. And I think when
- 0:24Speaker 1: you get off to start like that, That had to
- 0:26Speaker 1: be a good feeling for your club because you just
- 0:30Speaker 1: never know when you come on the road. Are you
- 0:32Speaker 1: going to play your best to begin with? Are you
- 0:34Speaker 1: going to fall in a hole? Are you going to
- 0:36Speaker 1: get a lead? You did the latter, and that's always
- 0:40Speaker 1: a good thing.
- 0:42Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that's two weeks in a row where
- 0:43Speaker 2: we've got off to great starts. Unfortunately, you're there in
- 0:48Speaker 2: the second quarter after playing a really good first quarter
- 0:51Speaker 2: in all three phases. You got the ball. you know,
- 0:55Speaker 2: in the plus territory at the 40-some yard line with
- 0:57Speaker 2: 12 minutes to go in the quarter. And, you know,
- 1:00Speaker 2: you got first and 10 there and you go into
- 1:02Speaker 2: halftime tied 14-14. So, you know, we hit the wall
- 1:06Speaker 2: in the second quarter. We didn't play very good complementary
- 1:08Speaker 2: football there. And I thought, you know, for, you know,
- 1:12Speaker 2: at times we let one play linger and, you know,
- 1:15Speaker 2: it turned into, you know, a negative one for the next,
- 1:18Speaker 2: you know, two or three plays in some individual cases. So,
- 1:22Speaker 2: We've got to do a better job of flushing the moment,
- 1:24Speaker 2: whether it's a hot start or whether it's not, and
- 1:27Speaker 2: really handling, you know, and having that next play mentality because,
- 1:31Speaker 2: you know, whatever side of the football you're on, you're
- 1:33Speaker 2: in for 70 or 80 snaps of, you know, three
- 1:37Speaker 2: and three and a half hours are really just hard moments.
- 1:39Speaker 2: So getting a young team to consistently buy into that
- 1:43Speaker 2: and to understand that is more of an art than
- 1:47Speaker 2: a science. And that's something we're hard at work trying
- 1:49Speaker 2: to do.
- 1:50Speaker 1: Yeah, and you said this a week or two ago,
- 1:52Speaker 1: a new team is what you got. And a lot
- 1:55Speaker 1: of coaches like you have the same thing all around
- 1:57Speaker 1: the country. It is a little more difficult, I'm going
- 2:00Speaker 1: to guess here, and I'm going to ask you that question,
- 2:03Speaker 1: to kind of mold a new team with players who
- 2:07Speaker 1: haven't played with each other together to deal with adversity.
- 2:11Speaker 1: Is that an accurate statement?
- 2:14Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that, you know, we're, The team we
- 2:17Speaker 2: just played, you know, is a great example of, you know,
- 2:20Speaker 2: what continuity and a head coach being at a place
- 2:22Speaker 2: for over a decade can look like when it gets
- 2:24Speaker 2: to tough moments. Yeah, sure, they have guys in the
- 2:27Speaker 2: transfer portal, too, that came to their program. But at
- 2:31Speaker 2: the end of the day, there's still a– when it
- 2:32Speaker 2: gets really, really hard and those margins are so small,
- 2:35Speaker 2: as you know, you have to really rely on one
- 2:37Speaker 2: another and you've got to hang in there and you've
- 2:40Speaker 2: got to just keep swinging. And credit to them. In
- 2:43Speaker 2: those moments, they made the plays and we didn't. But
- 2:47Speaker 2: I would say this. I do credit our team for,
- 2:49Speaker 2: you know, we had a hot start. We had a
- 2:51Speaker 2: really bad second quarter, and we were just kind of
- 2:54Speaker 2: even in the second half. And, you know, we're in
- 2:56Speaker 2: position at the end of the game where we wanted
- 2:58Speaker 2: to be. We had a chance to win the game
- 2:59Speaker 2: with the ball in our hand, and we just came
- 3:00Speaker 2: up short and didn't execute the plays that we needed
- 3:02Speaker 2: to make in the fourth quarter there in the last drive.
- 3:05Speaker 1: Yeah, two early drives for eight play drives, 175 yards
- 3:09Speaker 1: and 184 yards, ended up with touchdowns. one, a key
- 3:12Speaker 1: on two guys there, Javon Brown, who hadn't caught a
- 3:15Speaker 1: lot of balls this year, but had a nice start
- 3:17Speaker 1: to the season was all over the place. Six catches. Uh,
- 3:21Speaker 1: suddenly he was finding himself with some space and making plays.
- 3:25Speaker 1: That was good to see. Yeah.
- 3:27Speaker 2: Javon's a guy that continues to improve. Um, you know,
- 3:30Speaker 2: he dealt with a little, you've been dealing with a
- 3:32Speaker 2: little bit of an ankle there for the last, you know,
- 3:35Speaker 2: a couple of weeks here. So, you know, just getting
- 3:38Speaker 2: him to, you know, healthy and getting him feeling great. Um,
- 3:41Speaker 2: you know, getting him out there. He's a massive target
- 3:44Speaker 2: for Caleb and does a really good job making sure
- 3:47Speaker 2: that he's really strong at reception point. I mean, you know,
- 3:49Speaker 2: I thought he had the one at the end there
- 3:51Speaker 2: in the last drive, you know, at the goal line area,
- 3:53Speaker 2: the guy kind of grabbed his arm and held onto
- 3:55Speaker 2: him a little bit. You know, I think he probably
- 3:56Speaker 2: would like to fight through contact there a little bit too.
- 3:58Speaker 2: And I'd like to see a flag there, but didn't
- 4:01Speaker 2: get it. And, you know, he should, you know, he
- 4:03Speaker 2: wants to catch the ball. We want to make that play,
- 4:05Speaker 2: but he's going to continue to get those opportunities because
- 4:07Speaker 2: he's earned them. And, He's done a really good job
- 4:10Speaker 2: having a good camp and a good start to the season.
- 4:13Speaker 1: Yeah, you got to step ahead of me on that
- 4:15Speaker 1: last play. I was lamenting that and I was upset
- 4:18Speaker 1: about it for the next couple hours because I saw
- 4:21Speaker 1: the replay and I just kept saying to myself, if
- 4:25Speaker 1: you're going to be an official and you're getting paid
- 4:28Speaker 1: to do that job, that's part of your job. Identify
- 4:33Speaker 1: what happened there. And what happened is his arm, he's
- 4:37Speaker 1: got two of them, but the one that would help
- 4:39Speaker 1: him catch a ball was held up. That's a penalty
- 4:42Speaker 1: nine out of 10 times, is it not?
- 4:46Speaker 2: Well, I mean, you know, look, there's human error in
- 4:49Speaker 2: all of this. I mean, I'm the guy that hates
- 4:52Speaker 2: the digital strike zone in baseball. So I think that,
- 4:56Speaker 2: you know, that's part of the game. But, you know,
- 4:58Speaker 2: we ask young people and young players to tighten up
- 5:01Speaker 2: in tight moments and then you know, be the best
- 5:03Speaker 2: version of themselves. I don't think that's unfair for the adults,
- 5:05Speaker 2: whether they're coaches, officials, or anybody else in the arena
- 5:08Speaker 2: to do the same thing.
- 5:09Speaker 1: Yeah. I think the problem in college, maybe in pro
- 5:12Speaker 1: officiating is the guys are weekend warriors. They're not full-time guys.
- 5:16Speaker 1: They got regular jobs. Then they come to work on
- 5:18Speaker 1: Saturday and they do that job once a week. I mean,
- 5:22Speaker 1: that's tough when, you know, guys livelihoods like you and players,
- 5:26Speaker 1: potential livelihoods are kind of on the line. Yeah.
- 5:30Speaker 2: It's a hard job. It's hard to ask, um, you know,
- 5:32Speaker 2: and like I said, they're not always going to go
- 5:34Speaker 2: your way. You know, you're going to get some that
- 5:36Speaker 2: shouldn't go your way as well. That's part of the game.
- 5:39Speaker 2: And I totally understand that. And I get that. And,
- 5:42Speaker 2: you know, what I'm looking for is just clear communication
- 5:44Speaker 2: on maybe what, what was, what was seen and what wasn't,
- 5:48Speaker 2: you know, I mean, we go back to the Maryland game.
- 5:50Speaker 2: I mean, we get a, we get a face mask
- 5:52Speaker 2: caught on us on the minus two on a two
- 5:55Speaker 2: yard line going into score and they're left the right tackle,
- 5:58Speaker 2: ripped our helmet, the helmet off of our defensive end.
- 6:00Speaker 2: And then the center judge comes over and, you know,
- 6:02Speaker 2: next drive and says, Hey coach, I missed that one.
- 6:06Speaker 2: I've announced it wrong. I didn't, you know, I didn't
- 6:08Speaker 2: have it right. I can respect that. I can live
- 6:10Speaker 2: with it.
- 6:10Speaker 1: I mean, you know what I mean?
- 6:11Speaker 2: I mean, I get the honesty. It's part of it.
- 6:13Speaker 2: You know, I call some bad plays and I'm the
- 6:16Speaker 2: first guy that admits that. So, you know, you, you
- 6:19Speaker 2: got to take the accountability for it and it is
- 6:21Speaker 2: what it is. You move on. But in that situation,
- 6:24Speaker 2: that's first down. We still got to, we got to
- 6:26Speaker 2: get ahead of the sticks. We got to put our position,
- 6:28Speaker 2: our solvent position. We're at minimum, we have a game
- 6:31Speaker 2: time field goal and, we didn't do that, you know,
- 6:34Speaker 2: and we failed to get the first down and fourth
- 6:36Speaker 2: and 10.
- 6:37Speaker 1: Yeah. I just look back and I say, Javon Brown
- 6:39Speaker 1: with two hands makes that catch. That's all I got
- 6:41Speaker 1: for you. Two hands. He makes the catch. We win.
- 6:45Speaker 2: All right.
- 6:46Speaker 1: We're going to talk about Caleb Osborne and his game.
- 6:48Speaker 1: We come back, Jason candle with us, the Yukon football
- 6:51Speaker 1: coaches show on Learfield.
