- 0:39SPEAKER_06: Welcome in, everybody, to the Talk and Tech Podcast powered by Guns Up Nation, part of the Guns Up Nation Podcast Network.
- 0:45SPEAKER_06: I am your host, Steven Rodriguez, my co-host Tristan McGonagall.
- 0:48SPEAKER_06: And Tristan, if you aren't invested in cryptocurrency after watching that Super Bowl, I don't know what else to tell you, dude.
- 0:56SPEAKER_03: I invested in every commercial I saw.
- 0:58SPEAKER_03: It's my duty as a uh as a super consumer, I must consume every ad I see.
- 1:05SPEAKER_03: So you consider me a crypto investor.
- 1:09SPEAKER_06: There was at least five crypto related commercials that lasted a minute and a half.
- 1:15SPEAKER_06: I was like, no, no, like these people are just grabbing so many of us idiots and investing our hard-earned money.
- 1:25SPEAKER_04: And that's why we're proud to announce that we are launching Texas Tech Coin.
- 1:31SPEAKER_04: Don't fall for anything else.
- 1:34SPEAKER_04: Invest in only our Texas Tech Coin.
- 1:37SPEAKER_06: Yeah, we'll invest it for you.
- 1:39SPEAKER_06: Just send us your money and we'll get it done.
- 1:42SPEAKER_06: We'll send you some coins.
- 1:44SPEAKER_06: Who knows what you'll get, but you'll get some.
- 1:46SPEAKER_06: Our first sponsors, talking tech podcast, sponsored by Texas Tech Coin.
- 1:54SPEAKER_06: It's fantastic.
- 1:55SPEAKER_06: But no, we're out here.
- 1:57SPEAKER_06: We're talking about basketball this episode.
- 2:00SPEAKER_06: We are back, by the way.
- 2:01SPEAKER_06: It's been a hot minute since we've uh hopped in the studio here to discuss all things Texas Tech Sports.
- 2:06SPEAKER_06: Uh, but yeah, big week of basketball, man.
- 2:08SPEAKER_06: Uh, we had some highs and lows last week.
- 2:11SPEAKER_06: We have a couple massive games ahead of us.
- 2:14SPEAKER_06: We're also going to talk a little baseball coming up, big time, uh, big time Texas Tech Sport coming up, starting up this weekend.
- 2:21SPEAKER_06: Uh, football recruiting news.
- 2:22SPEAKER_06: We got some softball stuff, and then as always, song of the week.
- 2:26SPEAKER_06: Uh, but dude, we got to start with these uh these past two games for the Texas Tech basketball team.
- 2:32SPEAKER_06: Uh, dropped one in Norman and then uh kind of got our stuff back and and got back together at home against TCU.
- 2:39SPEAKER_06: But dude, we gotta start with Oklahoma because a uh a tough game to drop in Norman.
- 2:43SPEAKER_06: Uh shots weren't falling, and uh Emoja Gibson just went crazy.
- 2:48SPEAKER_03: I mean, this has to be like the one the worst game of the year we played.
- 2:52SPEAKER_03: I mean, our team just seemed completely out of it.
- 2:54SPEAKER_03: We seemed flat the entire game, the energy just wasn't there, and the reason why it hurts extra bad is because this had to have been the softest environment we played in all conference, like that arena was empty.
- 3:07SPEAKER_03: You could hear a pin drop and you could hear loud and proud raider powers coming from the crowd.
- 3:12SPEAKER_03: Yet we still got our butts pummeled, and we went in the half winning, like it just that second half was just a mystery.
- 3:19SPEAKER_06: Yeah, it was an uncharacteristic loss for tech, especially on the defensive side of the floor.
- 3:24SPEAKER_06: Um, you know, but to your environment point, I have a theory here, and you look at the two worst games that Texas Tech basketball has played this season, and it was at Kansas State and at Oklahoma, both environments, not you know, very quiet, very mild, not a lot going on.
- 3:43SPEAKER_06: And for Texas Tech, which is a school that uh our home games are nuts.
- 3:49SPEAKER_06: I mean, there's a loud, insane environment.
- 3:52SPEAKER_06: And then when we're not playing at home, we play at Ames, we play in Lawrence, we play at Morgantown.
- 3:59SPEAKER_06: These are still wild environments we're going through.
- 4:02SPEAKER_06: And I think this team really builds off energy well.
- 4:05SPEAKER_06: And even if it is negative energy, if it's just noise and loud, it gets you going.
- 4:10SPEAKER_06: And our team is you've seen big runs happen from Kansas and Baylor, and it almost energizes our team to get back into the game.
- 4:18SPEAKER_06: But when there's not really much happening in the environment the whole time, it's kind of a low energy crowd.
- 4:24SPEAKER_06: I mean, it it could lead to Texas Tech just not getting up for it.
- 4:28SPEAKER_03: You know, I think that's that's a valid point, you know, these these non-tangible things that happen in sports, and I think uh obviously the environment is a big one of them.
- 4:36SPEAKER_03: Um, but it just it just stinks so much because if if you're gonna go down, I want to go down in front of a a rambunctious crowd, you know.
- 4:45SPEAKER_03: At least at least let the fans feel like they contributed.
- 4:48SPEAKER_03: It just it just sucks to lose to one of your like quasi-rivals in the Oklahoma Sooner Sooners, and it just be just so boring in there because it just it truly just feels like a football-only school there that night.
- 5:01SPEAKER_03: And man, I I don't I'm I'm just being salty with that, but it just again, I I I was just disappointed with our effort and just well, because we weren't even getting shut out all from the noise level.
- 5:11SPEAKER_06: No, yeah, it was just a bad game offensively.
- 5:14SPEAKER_06: We were not flowing.
- 5:15SPEAKER_06: I mean, we had 13 turnovers, we were two of 17 and three.
- 5:18SPEAKER_06: You're not gonna win a lot of games doing that.
- 5:20SPEAKER_06: Um, and Oklahoma kind of exploited what is probably our one weak point on this defense, and that is you know, driving kick to out to the perimeter for an open shooter, or you know, making that skip pass when you're just moving the ball around the perimeter, and then eventually you find a skip pass over there for another wide open shooter.
- 5:41SPEAKER_06: I mean, Oklahoma 60 of their shots were three pointers in this game, so obviously they had a game plan going in.
- 5:48SPEAKER_06: Uh, you know, if you follow us on Twitter, you'll know that I'm a big Porter Mosher guy.
- 5:52SPEAKER_06: I think he's uh really good head coach, and I think he had a really, really good game plan going into this and knew what they needed to do to beat Texas Tech, and that was knock down their threes and you know, hold tech uh to shooting well from the perimeter, you know, closing out because we're not a good shooting team.
- 6:09SPEAKER_06: Yeah, so I think uh I think they just had a really good game plan and we just had an off day.
- 6:14SPEAKER_06: And you know, I wasn't looking too far into it, but uh yeah, sometimes you just have a bad night.
- 6:19SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's what I was about to say.
- 6:20SPEAKER_03: It just kind of seems like it was just one of those games that you're destined to have every once in a while.
- 6:24SPEAKER_03: And obviously, it's more likely to happen on the road.
- 6:26SPEAKER_03: I'm glad it was on the road.
- 6:27SPEAKER_03: You don't want to do it at home, uh, drop a game like that, especially to a lesser team.
- 6:31SPEAKER_03: Oh, he's not as good as we are.
- 6:32SPEAKER_03: I mean, I think that's obvious.
- 6:34SPEAKER_03: Uh, but like you said, they they just they didn't lose their heads, you know.
- 6:36SPEAKER_03: They went to halftime and uh losing and came out just firing up on our firing up on us like it was nothing, man.
- 6:42SPEAKER_03: And they just annihilated us from the three-point line, and no three-point line uh shot was going in for us, only two went in.
- 6:50SPEAKER_03: It was terrible.
- 6:51SPEAKER_03: I mean, you cringed every time they pulled up from that that far.
- 6:54SPEAKER_03: It was just it was rough to watch us play offensively offensive offensively the whole time, yeah.
- 6:59SPEAKER_06: And I mean, emoja Gibson was a man that came that dude didn't miss.
- 7:03SPEAKER_06: He was eight of eleven from three 30 points for this guy.
- 7:07SPEAKER_06: I mean, this he's he scores, he can he can score, but I mean, this was just a nightmare game for us against him.
- 7:15SPEAKER_06: He was making everything, yeah.
- 7:18SPEAKER_03: I mean, it it kind of just seems like he stepped up and it became our nightmare, and it definitely hurts.
- 7:23SPEAKER_03: He scored 30 whole points.
- 7:25SPEAKER_03: I mean, what are you gonna do whenever he's shooting automatic like that?
- 7:28SPEAKER_03: And most of it didn't come from free throws, he only got four points from free throws.
- 7:31SPEAKER_06: So he no, yeah, no, he was just knocking down he made eight three pointers this game.
- 7:36SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he had the ball, it was going in.
- 7:38SPEAKER_03: I mean, what can he do about that except for just trying to lock him down on defense?
- 7:41SPEAKER_03: Whatever a man is that hot, it's just if he's making those shots, what the heck are you supposed to do?
- 7:46SPEAKER_06: Yeah, so uh tough showing from that game, but you know, we did bounce back.
- 7:50SPEAKER_06: Um, we played a really, really strong end to the first half and whole entire second half against TCU uh back in Lubbock.
- 7:58SPEAKER_06: We win that one 82 to 69, and dude, a lot happened this game.
- 8:04SPEAKER_06: We'll get into everything, but but I wanted to start off by saying Terrence Shannon was a man amongst boys this game that we saw what Tarren Shannon can do.
- 8:14SPEAKER_06: And you and me posed this question just uh I don't know, a week or two ago, and we were asking, you know, do we have a Taryn Shannon Jr.
- 8:21SPEAKER_06: problem on this team?
- 8:22SPEAKER_06: Is he uh you know a right a right fit?
- 8:26SPEAKER_06: Is he flowing well with this offense?
- 8:28SPEAKER_06: Is he gonna be an issue moving forward?
- 8:31SPEAKER_06: And you know, he's he's kind of proven that you know Terrence Shannon's still Taryn Shannon, he just needs to get healthy and he needed to get back into the swing of things.
- 8:40SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he's definitely proven that you know he's the NBA talent on this team, like without question.
- 8:45SPEAKER_03: Uh, he really stepped up when we needed it.
- 8:46SPEAKER_03: We needed really needed a spark plug there at the end of the first half.
- 8:49SPEAKER_03: Like the first half was slow.
- 8:50SPEAKER_03: I mean, it it kind of seems like starting out slow is kind of our thing, and we kind of build up speed as the game goes.
- 8:55SPEAKER_03: But I'm just so glad he got out there and got it, got that ball moving forward because it was an uncharacteristic half in the first half.
- 9:02SPEAKER_03: We let TC score 40 points.
- 9:04SPEAKER_03: Have we done that all season?
- 9:05SPEAKER_03: Have we let us a team score 40 points on us all season in the first half?
- 9:09SPEAKER_06: I don't think so, but also they made their like season average number of three pointers in the first 10 minutes of this game.
- 9:16SPEAKER_06: So they were just it was it was like the Oklahoma game all over again in that first 10 minutes, and it was just kind of the game plan right now, isn't it?
- 9:24SPEAKER_03: What's that?
- 9:25SPEAKER_03: For like it's kind of like the game plan for the other teams right now, right?
- 9:28SPEAKER_03: Trying to eviscerate us from the three if they can.
- 9:30SPEAKER_06: Yeah, I mean, uh Oklahoma proved that you can win a game by doing that, and and TCU was knocking them down early.
- 9:35SPEAKER_06: They got up, I think they had like a 14-point lead or something at one point.
- 9:39SPEAKER_06: So uh, but we you know calmed calmed the fire a little bit, uh, you know, played our game, started locking down and closing out a little quicker, and uh, you know, got some turnovers that led to some easy transition buckets, and uh Texas Tech ended up taking this one pretty easily.
- 9:56SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean TCU lobbed up 27 threes, so that shows that that was the game plan, and they weren't gonna veer away from that.
- 10:03SPEAKER_03: And you you compare that to ours.
- 10:05SPEAKER_03: We shot nine, we shot nine three-point shots.
- 10:08SPEAKER_03: So I'm glad we went back to working the paint, though.
- 10:10SPEAKER_03: You know, I'm glad we did what we do best and getting and shooting down low.
- 10:13SPEAKER_03: Um, that's where we're gonna definitely win any game we can if we get that going.
- 10:17SPEAKER_03: If that often starts really moving forward, and uh, you know, like you said, we gotta thank that to TJ Shannon and uh Bryson Williams obviously had a great game again.
- 10:24SPEAKER_03: Um, so it was a good time for our guys to step up, but and it I'm just glad we we blew them out of the house because I know a lot of fans, you know, it happens whenever you're a successful team.
- 10:34SPEAKER_03: You lose one game to a bad team, you're like, Oh crap, what's going on?
- 10:37SPEAKER_03: We gotta figure this out.
- 10:38SPEAKER_03: We we figured it out, y'all.
- 10:40SPEAKER_06: Yeah, we figured it out a little bit.
- 10:42SPEAKER_06: Yeah, Bryson was great this game.
- 10:43SPEAKER_06: He had 16 points in 20 minutes.
- 10:45SPEAKER_06: He also was five of five from the free throw line, so that's always great to see.
- 10:49SPEAKER_06: Uh TJ Shannon, 20 points, uh, seven of nine shooting.
- 10:53SPEAKER_06: You know, you can't get much much better than that.
- 10:55SPEAKER_06: Uh, got to the free throw line.
- 10:56SPEAKER_06: He made just big plays when you needed them.
- 10:59SPEAKER_06: At the end of the half, there, where we're kind of making our comeback, he got that steal and that big, you know, Terrence Shannon dunk.
- 11:05SPEAKER_06: He does the same dunk every time, but it's always fantastic.
- 11:09SPEAKER_06: And I can't get enough of it when he just cocks it back there and yams it on everybody.
- 11:14SPEAKER_06: But um, yeah, and I thought Adonis Arms played well too.
- 11:17SPEAKER_06: He kind of had a sneaky good game, 10 points, five, uh, five rebounds, four assists, and two steals.
- 11:22SPEAKER_06: So uh a good good team performance there.
- 11:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah, a good balanced game, right?
- 11:27SPEAKER_03: I mean, even I mean, Kevin O'Banner didn't get any points, but still, everyone else, it was just nice and spread out.
- 11:33SPEAKER_03: You the the roster here is long, like it seemed like everybody saw the court, as he should in a game like this when you're up that much.
- 11:39SPEAKER_03: I mean, the final score probably doesn't really reflect the domination that we really put on him in the second half.
- 11:44SPEAKER_03: Once we got rolling, it was done.
- 11:45SPEAKER_03: The game was sealed, and obviously, thank you.
- 11:47SPEAKER_03: Thank you to that amazing home crowd we have as always wasn't giving up on the game at all.
- 11:51SPEAKER_03: Uh, still at least 14,000 people there making TCU hear us.
- 11:55SPEAKER_03: So, I mean, we got to secure the home we have, man.
- 11:58SPEAKER_03: I'm so glad we uh we're hosting uh the Baylor Bears next.
- 12:02SPEAKER_03: So we gotta just keep that energy rolling rolling forward.
- 12:05SPEAKER_06: Yeah, no doubt.
- 12:06SPEAKER_06: But we did we did have a bad thing happen in the TCU game.
- 12:08SPEAKER_06: Uh Kevin McCullough went down with uh what looked at the time to be a really, really serious injury.
- 12:14SPEAKER_06: I mean, the dude was writhing in pain.
- 12:16SPEAKER_06: Um, he was uh he stepped back, shoot a three-pointer, and then he was running back to the other side.
- 12:22SPEAKER_06: And uh, you know, he he put his foot back to get ready to go run to the other end of the court.
- 12:27SPEAKER_06: And uh he happened to step on Jamie Dixon, who is the TCU head coach's foot.
- 12:32SPEAKER_06: And uh, you know, a lot of Red Raider fans were all up in arms about that, uh, you know, saying Dixon needs to watch out, Dixon needs to do this.
- 12:40SPEAKER_06: And uh for me, you know, it was an unfortunate situation.
- 12:45SPEAKER_06: I hated it for Kevin because it really looked like a really bad injury at the time.
- 12:50SPEAKER_06: Thank goodness it seems that it's it's not as serious as we all thought it would be.
- 12:54SPEAKER_06: Um, but you know, for for our fan base was after Jamie Dixon, man.
- 12:59SPEAKER_06: They were they were thinking that you know there was something intentional about this, and I just can't really agree with that.
- 13:06SPEAKER_06: I don't I I just thought it was a bad accident.
- 13:09SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I was supposed to say accidents happen.
- 13:11SPEAKER_03: I didn't think that either.
- 13:12SPEAKER_03: I wasn't thinking it was some malicious attack on him or anything like that.
- 13:15SPEAKER_03: I mean, I didn't even really even notice that he he tripped over the head coach's uh the foot like that.
- 13:19SPEAKER_03: I thought he just landed on it funny or ran on it funny.
- 13:22SPEAKER_03: Um, so but but like you said, I mean you thought it was way more serious than it was.
- 13:26SPEAKER_03: But it turns out right now, I think it's just the general consensus is it was just like a sprain.
- 13:31SPEAKER_03: So and he's actually a full coin flip of whether or not he's gonna play in the Baylor game.
- 13:34SPEAKER_03: So it sounds like it wasn't nearly as bad as what it could have been.
- 13:37SPEAKER_06: Yeah, after seeing the way he reacted to it, you thought, man, I mean, that he and he was you know, he was grabbing his Achilles, and you're like, Yeah, I mean he he was really struggling, and uh what Mark Adams described it as a high ankle sprain.
- 13:52SPEAKER_06: Um, but what I will say on it is I didn't like I didn't like what Jamie Dixon said.
- 13:56SPEAKER_06: I don't know if you saw that clip of what he said in the press conference after the game, but you know, he kind of played it off and he just he just didn't play it the right way.
- 14:05SPEAKER_06: Like when you when that sort of situation happens, you you had to have known that he stepped on your foot and that you know that was when he was injured.
- 14:15SPEAKER_06: The game stops, everything this kid's freaking writhing in pain in front of your face, and you kind of play it off like, oh you know, hope hope the kid's okay.
- 14:24SPEAKER_06: And then the first thing he asked the reporter was, Well, I was in the coach's box, right?
- 14:29SPEAKER_06: It's like okay, so you clearly knew what happened, and you clearly knew you were in the coach's box, and that's how you like uh that kind of stuff just gets at me a little bit.
- 14:40SPEAKER_06: Um, but you know, I again I don't think he did it on purpose or anything, but uh you know, for for him to act that way in the press conference kind of leaves a bad taste in your mouth.
- 14:49SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean to me, whenever a coach is acting like that, he sounds like he's still aggravated about the game.
- 14:55SPEAKER_03: He just he's just frustrated with the situation, he's frustrated that he got his ass beat.
- 14:59SPEAKER_03: Like they got we it was pretty much a blowout.
- 15:01SPEAKER_03: Um, and you know, obviously it's that's never fun to sit in a press conference after that, especially whenever you're leading at half.
- 15:07SPEAKER_03: I think it was just it's just he's just frustrated and he just wanted to blow it off like it wasn't a big deal.
- 15:11SPEAKER_03: Like, uh, you know, it's just whatever.
- 15:13SPEAKER_03: This it's just he should have been watching out kind of thing.
- 15:15SPEAKER_03: But it's I I get the frustration with the fan base.
- 15:18SPEAKER_06: Yeah, no doubt.
- 15:19SPEAKER_06: He doesn't he doesn't do any favors for himself or so um also Micah PV refri revenge game.
- 15:27SPEAKER_06: What do you think?
- 15:27SPEAKER_06: Revenge game, revenge not very good revenge game, um five points, four assists, two turnovers, and uh five fouls.
- 15:38SPEAKER_06: He fouled out of this game.
- 15:40SPEAKER_06: Um I don't know.
- 15:42SPEAKER_06: There was like some quote that came out from a TCU reporter before the game, and it wasn't even Micah, it was one of his teammates, and he was like, We want to get this one for Micah, you know, we really want to win this one for PV because he was wronged.
- 15:56SPEAKER_06: And what no, he didn't say like he didn't say he was wronged or anything, but he but for him to say, like, we want to get this one for Micah, like, why he left what do you what do you what did we do?
- 16:07SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I mean, I don't know.
- 16:11SPEAKER_04: I mean, what do you think he's we'll just be like all right, Micah bye?
- 16:14SPEAKER_06: Like, yeah, no, him and Adams were very friendly in the handshake line.
- 16:18SPEAKER_06: I don't like I don't think it was anything really with somebody individually at tech, I think it was just his overall experience, and you know, that's kind of that's kind of on old Chris Beard for uh not learning how to use PV properly.
- 16:31SPEAKER_06: And um, I think he actually developed nicely.
- 16:34SPEAKER_06: He's still a really good defender, um, even though TJ Shannon kind of uh let him have it this game.
- 16:39SPEAKER_06: But overall, he's a good team defender.
- 16:41SPEAKER_06: I think he's a he's a solid player, he's uh you know, not the offensive player that we probably wanted him to be, um, even though he made that early three-pointer in this game, and we're like, What?
- 16:51SPEAKER_05: Are you kidding me?
- 16:52SPEAKER_05: Micah PV's gonna go out here and make a three-pointer in the first minute of this game.
- 16:57SPEAKER_03: All right, so uh I had to do chores.
- 16:59SPEAKER_03: I was uh I had to clean the carpets because we're hosting guests this coming weekend for a certain game, and so I couldn't really hear the TV.
- 17:08SPEAKER_03: Well, how was the reception whenever Micah went out there?
- 17:11SPEAKER_03: Well, where are the weeks?
- 17:12SPEAKER_03: He was boo, he was boot, okay.
- 17:13SPEAKER_06: Uh yeah, it was mostly coming from the student section.
- 17:16SPEAKER_06: Um, you know, like you're gonna get some of that when you transfer out of tech, no matter what kind of dude, like you know, I uh nobody blames Micah Peavy for leaving, nobody blames Kyler Edwards.
- 17:27SPEAKER_06: Now, the way he left, I don't know, it's maybe a little different conversation, but uh, you know, Tyreek Smith and those type of players, like we don't blame them for leaving after a coaching change, you know, and trying to find something different elsewhere, but um, you know, you're gonna get some echoing when you come back, especially when you transfer in conference for sure, and and and to a rival.
- 17:47SPEAKER_03: Uh, but it wasn't quite, you know, what Avery Benson did.
- 17:50SPEAKER_03: I like I do not have the same feelings towards like Kyler Edwards and Michael P V, especially Kyler.
- 17:54SPEAKER_03: You know, he transferred out of the conference and everything.
- 17:56SPEAKER_03: So I mean, hey, yeah, there's they were still good dudes.
- 17:59SPEAKER_03: I'm not that mad about it.
- 18:00SPEAKER_06: Oh, yeah, uh come on.
- 18:02SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I like it.
- 18:03SPEAKER_06: There wasn't there wasn't like a crazy boo fest or anything for him, but there was definitely he definitely heard it for a few possessions that he got the ball, but um, and I think he airballed the shot and then they really just let him have it right there.
- 18:16SPEAKER_06: Airball, chance, all that kind of all that kind of good stuff.
- 18:19SPEAKER_06: As they should, yeah, as they should.
- 18:21SPEAKER_06: And so um, old Micah, you know, uh wish him the best when he's not playing tech, but uh, but when he is, you know, we're we're gonna boo you, pal.
- 18:30SPEAKER_03: I think the most important story about this was that Mark Adams won this in front of his mother.
- 18:34SPEAKER_03: I think I think all of Red Raider Nation would defend the both of them to the to the death.
- 18:40SPEAKER_06: Oh my god, I didn't even know Mark Adams' mom was still alive.
- 18:42SPEAKER_06: And she was at the uh the announcement thing.
- 18:45SPEAKER_06: She was oh, that's right, she was.
- 18:48SPEAKER_06: She, but you know, you think a 65-year-old guy, you think I don't know, maybe his parents probably aren't alive, but uh no, I'm that was the sweetest couple pictures that they posted on Twitter afterwards.
- 18:58SPEAKER_06: Mark Adams rocks.
- 19:01SPEAKER_06: Mama Adams is the best.
- 19:03SPEAKER_06: Um, so yeah, we got back on track.
- 19:06SPEAKER_06: Um, you know, Texas Tech back in the win column, and uh we have we have a couple difficult games ahead of us, my man.
- 19:13SPEAKER_03: Yeah, these might be the two biggest games of the season, like the two, like the two biggest stretches of the season.
- 19:17SPEAKER_03: Like, uh, you know what I'm trying to say.
- 19:19SPEAKER_03: Like, this might be the biggest stretch of the whole season.
- 19:22SPEAKER_03: You know, you have your two biggest rivals on the slate here, two top 25 teams, two teams that are looking for the Big 12 championship in postseason hopes, and we are too.
- 19:30SPEAKER_03: Like, these these are great teams we're going up against.
- 19:32SPEAKER_03: It's gonna be tough.
- 19:33SPEAKER_06: Yeah, yeah.
- 19:34SPEAKER_06: Baylor, Baylor tomorrow on Wednesday, uh, as we're recording this podcast.
- 19:39SPEAKER_06: By the time you're listening, it'll probably be the day of dip.
- 19:42SPEAKER_06: The day of, and uh, we have Baylor and Lubbock.
- 19:45SPEAKER_06: That one's gonna be at 8 p.m.
- 19:47SPEAKER_06: on ESPN2 at the USA in Lubbock.
- 19:50SPEAKER_06: Uh, and then Saturday, man, Saturday, round two against uh old bearding tech live.
- 19:56SPEAKER_06: We are going to be there.
- 19:58SPEAKER_06: Um, we'll get into that in a second.
- 20:00SPEAKER_06: We'll talk all things UT in Austin.
- 20:03SPEAKER_06: Uh, but we got to talk about Baylor because Baylor is the next opponent and they're the number seven team in the country right now.
- 20:09SPEAKER_03: Obviously, I have to preface this with uh too bad we couldn't have Joe Goodman on this time.
- 20:13SPEAKER_03: I mean, to hear what he has to say and and and hear what he had to say about that that L we handed to them and and Waco.
- 20:19SPEAKER_03: And now we must do it once more at home because winning at home is what we do.
- 20:24SPEAKER_03: Um, best home accord advantage of the country.
- 20:27SPEAKER_03: And I gotta say, it's already showing.
- 20:28SPEAKER_03: We already got tents coming out of the entrance, man.
- 20:30SPEAKER_03: It's happening again.
- 20:32SPEAKER_03: Tent the tent trail is already happening again.
- 20:35SPEAKER_06: Just in case you needed another reminder that we have the best fan base in the nation.
- 20:40SPEAKER_06: The people are camping out again.
- 20:42SPEAKER_06: They were camping out, I think yesterday, I think on Monday, uh, for the Wednesday game.
- 20:47SPEAKER_06: And man, our our student section, it rocks.
- 20:50SPEAKER_06: It's just constant, uh, a constant reminder that we have the best student section, best fan base in the nation.
- 20:56SPEAKER_03: And they're the best and the brightest.
- 20:57SPEAKER_03: They understand now if you're not there, man, you're not gonna get a good seat.
- 21:00SPEAKER_03: You if you want to be front and center, you you gotta you gotta work for front and center.
- 21:07SPEAKER_06: Yeah, no doubt.
- 21:08SPEAKER_06: I mean, if you I'm sure a lot of people didn't get into that UT game that you know, we wish we could put the entire student population in there, but yeah, uh, you know, unfortunately, uh they gotta sell some tickets too.
- 21:20SPEAKER_06: So um they're doing that, but uh, but yeah, let's talk a little Baylor because they're coming off a 17-point win uh against the Longhorns.
- 21:28SPEAKER_06: It was lovely to watch uh before the TCU game.
- 21:31SPEAKER_06: Great game.
- 21:32SPEAKER_06: Yes, indeed.
- 21:34SPEAKER_06: Uh they they have some injuries.
- 21:35SPEAKER_06: Uh LJ Cryer, who missed the Longhorn game.
- 21:38SPEAKER_06: Uh, he's a game time decision according to Scott Drew.
- 21:41SPEAKER_06: Uh he's I think their leading scorer this season.
- 21:43SPEAKER_06: So, you know, he's another one of those explosive guards that can knock down a lot of shots.
- 21:48SPEAKER_06: He he definitely did that in our uh first game in Waco this year.
- 21:52SPEAKER_06: Um, and then Jonathan Chama Chachua is out for the year with that horrible knee injury he suffered during the longhorn game.
- 21:59SPEAKER_06: Uh, dude.
- 22:00SPEAKER_06: Yeah, it was that was brutal.
- 22:01SPEAKER_06: Uh the seeing the replay of that thing.
- 22:03SPEAKER_06: I mean, man, you never want to see a player get hurt like that.
- 22:06SPEAKER_06: I don't care what team you play, what team you root for, uh, what team you root against.
- 22:10SPEAKER_06: That's a that's a horrible injury.
- 22:11SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 22:12SPEAKER_03: No, nobody deserves that, especially the young men at this age who have like their whole future ahead of them, maybe even big league uh aspirations.
- 22:17SPEAKER_03: Like that kind of stuff can cut all that off.
- 22:20SPEAKER_03: And I I just obviously nothing but prayers and thoughts going to that kid.
- 22:23SPEAKER_03: So hopefully he gets back on the court and balls again someday.
- 22:25SPEAKER_03: Uh and hopefully it's soon.
- 22:27SPEAKER_06: Yeah, no doubt.
- 22:28SPEAKER_06: So, you know, wishing him the best.
- 22:30SPEAKER_06: But uh, this team's still really good, even without these two guys.
- 22:32SPEAKER_06: I mean, we saw it in that Texas game.
- 22:34SPEAKER_06: They were they were dominant, and it starts with uh it starts with James Lakinjo, their their point guard, the Arizona transfer.
- 22:41SPEAKER_06: He is really, really good.
- 22:44SPEAKER_06: And he made it, he made it known.
- 22:46SPEAKER_06: He made his presence known there against the Longhorns.
- 22:49SPEAKER_06: Um, he he's just a floor general, dude.
- 22:51SPEAKER_06: He makes it, he makes the offense flow, he's a great defender, uh, and he's a true point guard.
- 22:57SPEAKER_06: And that's something we haven't really had this year at tech.
- 23:00SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean that's that's definitely the position group they have us absolutely beat in, is is the guard.
- 23:04SPEAKER_03: We that was our same discussion with Joe Goodman over he came on as you know, they have uh elite guards, and they do.
- 23:08SPEAKER_03: I mean, they have an elite team in general, but the guards really help them put them over the hump.
- 23:13SPEAKER_03: Um, I gotta say that I I'm actually pretty happy.
- 23:15SPEAKER_03: I mean, there's multiple reasons why.
- 23:16SPEAKER_03: I'm happy they beat the Longhorns in Waco the other night.
- 23:20SPEAKER_03: Um, but what one of them is definitely I don't want to come up against an angry Baylor, a Baylor who just lost a like a game they shouldn't have against against a UT.
- 23:29SPEAKER_03: So I'm glad we got that team coming to love again.
- 23:31SPEAKER_03: And secondly, I'm glad we've already split the series with this Baylor team.
- 23:35SPEAKER_03: You know, winning in Waco, obviously incredibly difficult to do just for the sheer power this team brings.
- 23:40SPEAKER_03: But you know, I would have taken one and one with this team at the beginning of the year, no matter how it went down.
- 23:45SPEAKER_03: So I obviously I'm not just banking, I don't I'm not banking on this just flat out being a win.
- 23:49SPEAKER_03: We're barely favored, thankfully.
- 23:51SPEAKER_03: I mean, I think our home court advantage speaks for itself, and obviously we're a fantastic team as well.
- 23:55SPEAKER_03: But this is obviously this might be the toughest game for the rest of the year here.
- 24:00SPEAKER_06: Yeah, it's kind of nice knowing that we even if we lose both of these next two games, which I hope we don't because you know that hurts seating and everything like that.
- 24:08SPEAKER_06: But uh, even if we lose to Baylor and UT, it's we split the series, and you know, that's kind of a a nice uh you know back of the head sort of thing to to have on your mind.
- 24:17SPEAKER_06: But um, there is a difference with this first uh Baylor game and this game, and that's uh a guy named Jeremy Sohan, who is who didn't play in the first game in Waco.
- 24:27SPEAKER_06: Uh he was injured for that one.
- 24:29SPEAKER_06: But I there's something about this dude, and he's a he's a true freshman.
- 24:33SPEAKER_06: Um, he's about 6'8, and he just every time I watch Baylor and I see him on the floor, he's always doing something, and that's something they didn't have in the first meeting against tech.
- 24:45SPEAKER_06: And um, you know, whether it's blocking a shot, drawing a charge, making a big three-pointer, getting a tap out rebound.
- 24:53SPEAKER_06: I mean, he does a lot of stuff good, and it's it's uh, you know, we missed him in the first game, which was really nice, but you know, getting getting him back will be a uh a tough one for tech.
- 25:03SPEAKER_03: So it's gonna be interesting to see then.
- 25:05SPEAKER_03: I mean, if you're bringing in a hustle grinder like this guy that goes up against the the grinding, you know, buzzsaw that is our team, you know, we're always we're always bumping and grinding as well.
- 25:14SPEAKER_03: It's probably gonna be a very physical game, then it's probably gonna be a lot of contact.
- 25:17SPEAKER_06: Oh, yeah, yeah, no doubt.
- 25:19SPEAKER_06: And it's gonna be it's gonna be a lot of contact down low, too.
- 25:22SPEAKER_06: You know, without uh Chama Chachua, Flo Thamba's gonna play a lot of minutes this game.
- 25:26SPEAKER_06: Uh, and then they're also gonna share minutes there with Kendall Brown, Sohan.
- 25:30SPEAKER_06: I'm sure Matthew Mayer will get in there for a little bit, uh, just banging down low, trying to get rebounds.
- 25:36SPEAKER_06: All those guys are like six foot eight and up.
- 25:38SPEAKER_06: So, you know, the length is the same when it comes to you know, Texas Tech and Baylor, even without Chama Chachua.
- 25:44SPEAKER_06: But um, you know, in terms of they're just not they're not true bids, you know, they're forwards or or even Mayor's kind of considered a guard a little bit, but um just uh banging down low with the Marcus Sanos Silva, I don't think it's gonna be so easy, you know.
- 26:01SPEAKER_03: No, absolutely not, man.
- 26:02SPEAKER_03: I definitely put um the money on us whenever it's a battle down in the paint.
- 26:05SPEAKER_03: Um, but so whenever you're comparing a roster like theirs to ours with health-wise, so are we only expecting Kevin McCullough to be out right now?
- 26:14SPEAKER_03: He's a game time decision.
- 26:15SPEAKER_03: 50-50 with him right now, yeah.
- 26:16SPEAKER_06: Yeah, he's a game time decision, so really no.
- 26:19SPEAKER_06: I wouldn't expect McCullough to play, uh, to be honest.
- 26:22SPEAKER_06: Meaning with uh, you know, he Mark Adams said it was a high ankle sprain.
- 26:25SPEAKER_06: High ankle sprains are not good.
- 26:26SPEAKER_06: Uh they're they're better than a torn Achilles and they're better than a broken ankle, but high ankle sprain's debatable.
- 26:33SPEAKER_06: High ankle sprains are much worse than a low ankle sprain.
- 26:37SPEAKER_06: And so if Kevin McCullough comes back and plays this game, I would be astounded.
- 26:42SPEAKER_06: Uh, but you know, that I wouldn't all I also wouldn't be surprised because he's Kevin McCullough and he's a fighter, but right um, you know, I I the thing with this is I would expect a lot of smaller lineups for Baylor.
- 26:54SPEAKER_06: Uh, and you know, we mostly play two bigs all the time here at tech, whether it's San Josilva and Bacho or Williams and O'Banner or whatever.
- 27:02SPEAKER_06: Um, so we may have to, you know, switch it up a little bit if they're just too fast for us and uh playing four guards.
- 27:09SPEAKER_06: And I could see Baylor doing a lot of different lineups and a lot of stuff uh that could throw us off.
- 27:13SPEAKER_06: But uh this is gonna be an interesting one.
- 27:17SPEAKER_03: Absolutely, man.
- 27:18SPEAKER_03: I definitely a 50-50 battle.
- 27:20SPEAKER_03: I don't I don't feel super confident either way.
- 27:22SPEAKER_03: Uh what I put my faith in is obviously, you know, I do believe in Mark Adams and I I believe in this home court.
- 27:27SPEAKER_03: So I I want to finish the season out completely undefeated in the USA.
- 27:31SPEAKER_03: I mean, just I what an absolute statement that sends to the future with Mark Adams, the environment we provide, and recruits coming in.
- 27:38SPEAKER_03: You know, winning at home is just it's probably the most important thing you can do in any college sport.
- 27:42SPEAKER_03: And I'm glad that we have it down here in Texas Tech basketball.
- 27:45SPEAKER_03: So I'm I really hope we bring it for the Baylor Bears, uh, both on the court and around them.
- 27:50SPEAKER_06: Yeah, and another guy I really believe in is Bryson Williams.
- 27:53SPEAKER_06: And I think he with with Chama Chachua out, I think uh Bryson is gonna have a a pretty good time, you know, offensively.
- 28:00SPEAKER_06: I think we need to find a way to get him the ball um and let him do his thing because uh you know we've seen Bryson at his best, and he's when he's playing good, the team's usually playing good.
- 28:11SPEAKER_03: And obviously, let's have uh TJ have a pop at it too, man.
- 28:14SPEAKER_03: I I forget, did he he didn't play in the baylor game, right?
- 28:17SPEAKER_06: Uh no, yeah.
- 28:18SPEAKER_06: TJ didn't play.
- 28:19SPEAKER_06: I don't think McCullough played in the Baylor game either.
- 28:21SPEAKER_06: I think or was it was it McCullough played in one of the Kansas and Baylor games earlier this season?
- 28:28SPEAKER_06: I think we didn't do our research.
- 28:30SPEAKER_06: We didn't, we didn't do our research, but we beat one of those two teams without both of them, and we beat one of them without TJ Shannon.
- 28:37SPEAKER_06: But uh, yeah, so now we gotta now we gotta play Baylor again, probably without Kevin McCullough.
- 28:43SPEAKER_06: So it's just been fun.
- 28:45SPEAKER_03: Absolutely, man.
- 28:46SPEAKER_03: All right, anything else about the Bears, about the the Goodman Bears.
- 28:50SPEAKER_06: No, it just uh just would be huge.
- 28:52SPEAKER_06: It would be another top 10 win if we get this one.
- 28:54SPEAKER_06: So, you know, all those are always welcome.
- 28:56SPEAKER_06: But um, let's talk Texas, let's talk it.
- 28:59SPEAKER_06: It's big big time game coming up here on Saturday.
- 29:02SPEAKER_06: Uh, our first game, we are gonna be there, we are gonna be in person.
- 29:07SPEAKER_06: First game of the season, both you and me are gonna be watching Mark Adams and Texas Tech Live.
- 29:11SPEAKER_03: Man, I I am so excited for this.
- 29:13SPEAKER_03: I mean, it's not quite the same hype as it was over the coming home to Lubbock because it's uh first time Chris Beard comes to Lubbock, Texas.
- 29:19SPEAKER_03: But dude, I I am so excited to see the crowd that shows up to the Irwin Center.
- 29:24SPEAKER_03: I mean, the UT office has been so weird about all this, you know.
- 29:27SPEAKER_03: They they they're doing their best to keep us from buying tickets, it's truly bizarre.
- 29:31SPEAKER_03: Um, and I just really want to show out and make uh make us hurt anyway.
- 29:35SPEAKER_03: I want to see a boatload of red.
- 29:38SPEAKER_06: Yeah, so I mean, we kind of lucked out when it came to attending this game because uh we originally got tickets for the game last year at Texas.
- 29:48SPEAKER_06: And I, you know, I was gonna drive up and we were gonna go to the game, and it was it ended up being the game that Mac McClung made the clutch shot there at the end to beat the Longhorns.
- 29:56SPEAKER_06: But last minute last year, they canceled, they said no fans because of COVID stuff, and we were pissed.
- 30:03SPEAKER_06: We were like, Oh my god, what the heck?
- 30:05SPEAKER_06: You know, we were gonna go to this and it was gonna be great, limited capacity, but it was still gonna be fun.
- 30:10SPEAKER_06: So we got our refund from the the ticket site that we bought it, bought those tickets from, and we used that money to uh to buy tickets for this game this year.
- 30:21SPEAKER_06: And luckily we did it early, so you know, before all the ticket office nonsense that that CDC is pulling over there uh at UT.
- 30:29SPEAKER_06: So we managed to get uh five tickets for uh us and my dad, my sister, and and our buddy Clay.
- 30:36SPEAKER_06: So we're gonna have a hoot, dude.
- 30:37SPEAKER_03: Absolutely, man.
- 30:38SPEAKER_03: I hope we see any of y'all there and obviously grabbing beers before and after as well.
- 30:42SPEAKER_03: Um the all this, all this like sketchy, you know, cut the ticket sales off, you know, more students in rather than ticket sales than normal.
- 30:52SPEAKER_03: It all just screams to me that they're scared, they are so scared to show that we are the much better fan base, and it's just it's so blatantly obvious, man.
- 31:01SPEAKER_03: And it's so funny that UT will just sit here and act like all day long that the TechStech Red Raiders don't matter.
- 31:06SPEAKER_03: And man, I really feel like I don't matter, that's for sure.
- 31:11SPEAKER_06: No, I mean they're they should be scared.
- 31:14SPEAKER_06: I mean, if you're an athletic director, this is your worst nightmare having an opposing team in your state who you technically don't consider a rival, but it's a rivalry guy.
- 31:26SPEAKER_03: So, you know, you hate seeing yourself as a superior program, exactly, exactly.
- 31:31SPEAKER_06: And you hate seeing a another fan base in state come and take over your arena.
- 31:35SPEAKER_06: So, you know, this is this is Del Conti's nightmare, and I'm sure Beard was uh not having it either because of the whole situation with us, and so uh, you know, they probably pulled a little sketchy stuff, but all I know is that uh there's gonna be a good amount of red raiders there.
- 31:51SPEAKER_06: Um, whether it's gonna be 75, I'm not so sure.
- 31:55SPEAKER_06: Uh, what are you thinking the splits gonna be there uh between fan bases?
- 31:59SPEAKER_03: I I think from a general ticket sales, I still think it's gonna be at least 50-50.
- 32:05SPEAKER_03: Um, but the thing, I think what the difference is gonna be is they're just making all these statements that they're not gonna reject a single student at the door.
- 32:12SPEAKER_03: So I think they're they they said that so I think they're gonna make this huge section uh that they blocked off for the students bigger than they've ever had, probably in the Irwin ever.
- 32:22SPEAKER_03: So I think there's gonna be a boatload of tech Texas students there, and so I think I think it's gonna be a pretty rowdy atmosphere because I think they're gonna have the rowdiness that just comes that follows a tech crowd combined with a bunch of with this crowd that you know cares much more than than they would normally at home.
- 32:37SPEAKER_03: You know, this is a home crowd that usually doesn't care that much, but now they're gonna they're gonna be they're gonna want it really bad.
- 32:43SPEAKER_03: I mean, obviously, they might want it just as bad as we do that that night, like from a from a fan's point of view.
- 32:48SPEAKER_06: Yeah, well, I mean, you know, what Texas did was they blocked off seating, they jacked up the prices on those seats and realized that you know not not everybody can pay$750 for a seat, and they don't care if that seat's not sold because they can just give it to a student.
- 33:06SPEAKER_06: That's their whole ideology here.
- 33:08SPEAKER_06: But um, you know, it's kind of a BS way to go at it, but uh, you know, plenty of tech fans got in on it early and got their seats, and we're gonna be loud as crap in that arena, and uh, you know, it's it's gonna be a crazy environment.
- 33:22SPEAKER_06: I think it's gonna be probably 60, 40 uh Texas fans in there because I think this whole ticket sale nonsense kind of you know kind of got us a little bit.
- 33:32SPEAKER_06: And if they were if they just sold them straight up, like you know, just on the open market, it would definitely be majority Texas Tech fans.
- 33:38SPEAKER_06: But I think from the stuff they pulled, they probably got a little bit of what they wished for.
- 33:42SPEAKER_03: Hey, we we were asking for it though.
- 33:44SPEAKER_03: I mean, we we we did everything in our power to be as obnoxious about it as possible.
- 33:49SPEAKER_03: No, which I appreciate.
- 33:51SPEAKER_03: Don't do not get me wrong, yeah.
- 33:53SPEAKER_03: You know, going to their to their automated, you know, receptionists and everything saying we're ticked, we're tech, we're tech tickets, where point three tech tickets, buy now, no to hook them.
- 34:04SPEAKER_03: You know, it's just like I love it, don't get me wrong, but like they they they saw how much traffic they were we we were giving them online for the game.
- 34:11SPEAKER_03: They're like, Oh, we we gotta do something.
- 34:13SPEAKER_03: So, um, but I like you said, man, I I agree with you.
- 34:16SPEAKER_03: I think the tech students are, I mean, the Texas students are gonna put us put them over in the majority, but like I said, in general sense, I think it's gonna be pretty 50-50.
- 34:22SPEAKER_06: Yeah, no, in terms of noise, I imagine it's gonna be probably pretty 50-50.
- 34:27SPEAKER_06: We're gonna hear some, and even if it is 60-40 or even lower, the Texas Tech fans are gonna be loud as crap.
- 34:33SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you're gonna you're gonna hear from definitely us degenerates over there, that's for sure.
- 34:37SPEAKER_06: Oh, yeah, we'll we'll be up there and we'll be screaming, we'll be wearing red.
- 34:40SPEAKER_06: No doubt.
- 34:41SPEAKER_06: Wear red to this game.
- 34:43SPEAKER_06: Um I I wanted to ask you something else.
- 34:45SPEAKER_06: What what do you think a sweep of this longhorn team would mean to Texas Tech?
- 34:50SPEAKER_03: Oh, I I think it would just be sweet, sweet retribution.
- 34:53SPEAKER_03: And I think it just just absolute gives us the absolute confidence moving forward and what we are and what we have in Mark Adams.
- 35:00SPEAKER_03: And I think it makes a statement to the whole college basketball world.
- 35:03SPEAKER_03: You know, we were laughed at saying that you know, Mark Adams was really the architect of how a Texas Tech basketball team worked, you know.
- 35:09SPEAKER_03: Mark Chris Beard was more the marketer and the face of the team more so than the actual um engineer.
- 35:15SPEAKER_03: And I think we're gonna prove to if winning both games proves to the whole country that we were right this whole time that Mark Adams was truly the engineer while while Chris Beard was just the salesman with the with the pretty face on the front of it.
- 35:26SPEAKER_06: Yeah, no, I think you said it beautifully.
- 35:29SPEAKER_06: Um, yeah, I think it would mean a ton to just this fan base and what we can do as a team, as a university.
- 35:37SPEAKER_06: And you know, it's not just one singular dude.
- 35:39SPEAKER_06: It's not even, you know, it's as much as I love Mark Adams, it's not even just Mark Adams, it's it's everybody that goes into this.
- 35:45SPEAKER_06: You know, it's it's the fans that make our home environment so freaking nuts and so hard to win at.
- 35:51SPEAKER_06: It's our uh athletic department that puts in the money and the time and the effort to you know bring up this program.
- 35:58SPEAKER_06: And it's um it's just everybody, it's all the fans that buy stuff and and you know, buy tickets and you know, try to take over away team stadiums.
- 36:07SPEAKER_03: It's it's not just one man, and it has never been just one man, but that one man has done a great job being the leader of that movement, and you know, no doubt.
- 36:17SPEAKER_03: The difference difference between him and and Chris Beard is it's it's truly genuine this time.
- 36:21SPEAKER_03: I mean, you have a West Texan native, an alumnus who really truly believes with every ounce of his being in Texas Tech University in West Texas, it was never just a promotion and a stepping stone to where he wanted to go.
- 36:35SPEAKER_03: That that this was the final product, and he couldn't be more proud to represent us.
- 36:40SPEAKER_03: And that's why I'm so proud that he is our coach and I can call him our coach.
- 36:44SPEAKER_03: I know I know that it's not more than just one guy, and he would be the first to tell you that, but I just want to make sure that it's also his moment as well.
- 36:50SPEAKER_03: So, you know, because it's you know he feels the pressure as well, being the second guy, you know, being the guy that that was recruited out of circumstance, not so much uh we went and got him.
- 37:02SPEAKER_03: You know, get what I'm saying?
- 37:03SPEAKER_06: Yeah, he's he's a hell of a coach, and you know, he it that doesn't need to be that doesn't need to be said.
- 37:08SPEAKER_06: We've said it multiple times.
- 37:10SPEAKER_06: He's just he's fantastic, he's done a great job with this team bringing in an almost completely new roster with transfers, and he's made it work.
- 37:17SPEAKER_06: And uh, you know, we we have a tough stretch ahead of us.
- 37:20SPEAKER_06: But if we get these next two, dude, we're looking at a uh a really nice seeding, potentially a two seed.
- 37:26SPEAKER_03: That would be huge, man.
- 37:28SPEAKER_03: And I can't wait to see where these seedings kind of uh project us to be physically in the tournament.
- 37:33SPEAKER_03: I know we're all hoping and praying for Fort Worth.
- 37:36SPEAKER_03: I don't know how that happens.
- 37:37SPEAKER_03: Like, I'm not I haven't really studied the bracketology this year yet.
- 37:41SPEAKER_03: Um, but obviously that would be the ideal situation.
- 37:43SPEAKER_03: So we could once again invade a quotation marks away stadium.
- 37:48SPEAKER_06: Yeah, and I know there's another uh set of games going on in San Antonio too.
- 37:53SPEAKER_06: So I don't know if that's later.
- 37:55SPEAKER_06: I don't know.
- 37:55SPEAKER_06: I haven't looked at it much either, but um yeah, anytime you get a home court advantage like that, and and tech travels well, you know.
- 38:01SPEAKER_06: We traveled to uh to Boston pretty well, even when we were on that uh final four run there.
- 38:07SPEAKER_06: And uh I think we had some games in California that we even made it to, but yeah, obviously MSG.
- 38:12SPEAKER_06: Yeah, obviously, if you get to Fort Worth or you you get San Antonio, you'll get that much more uh Texas Tech fans at the game.
- 38:20SPEAKER_06: So um it'll be cool, it'll be crazy.
- 38:22SPEAKER_06: Um, send us your bar recommendations, send us where y'all are gonna be at, uh Twitter or just anything.
- 38:29SPEAKER_06: If y'all, if there's like a party set up or uh just let us know because we're gonna be in Austin.
- 38:34SPEAKER_06: It's an it's an 11:30 game.
- 38:36SPEAKER_06: So, you know, we're gonna be let out by two or two thirty, and you know, we get the rest of the day to party and hopefully celebrate a Texas Tech win.
- 38:43SPEAKER_06: Um, the game, by the way, 11:30 a.m.
- 38:46SPEAKER_06: on ABC, I believe.
- 38:48SPEAKER_06: But um yeah, it's it's it's gonna be fun.
- 38:52SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, Steve and I are just as lame in real life as we sound over the mics, but we do really enjoy beer.
- 38:58SPEAKER_03: So, I mean, if if if if if you're drinking beer, we'll come and join you and drink said beer.
- 39:02SPEAKER_03: We just have to unfortunately bring our ugly friend Clay.
- 39:05SPEAKER_03: Please, please don't kick us out due to that.
- 39:08SPEAKER_06: He's been kicked out of a few bars before, but that's uh story for another time.
- 39:13SPEAKER_06: But uh, yeah, no, it's gonna be a fun weekend no matter what.
- 39:16SPEAKER_06: Just uh being able to see Texas Tech basketball live, dude.
- 39:19SPEAKER_06: It's been it's been so long.
- 39:21SPEAKER_06: The last game I think you and me were at together was the Buffalo game in the tournament in 2019, right?
- 39:27SPEAKER_06: Yeah, in Tulsa.
- 39:29SPEAKER_06: Uh that was a good one.
- 39:30SPEAKER_06: That was a good one.
- 39:31SPEAKER_06: That was a long time ago.
- 39:32SPEAKER_03: I know, man.
- 39:33SPEAKER_03: And uh the last time I saw Texas Tech play live was in Minneapolis.
- 39:37SPEAKER_03: So uh we keep saying that we need to make a trip to Levic, and we unfortunately just have been bad fans about it, but I'm just so happy we get to finally.
- 39:44SPEAKER_03: I mean, COVID didn't help either, but I'm glad we finally get to go and see us.
- 39:48SPEAKER_06: Yes, I'm I'm just excited to see some live basketball.
- 39:52SPEAKER_06: Same, it's been a long time since I've been to a uh you know professional or college basketball game.
- 39:57SPEAKER_06: So I'm hyped about it.
- 39:59SPEAKER_06: Yeah, no doubt, man.
- 40:00SPEAKER_06: I love basketball.
- 40:01SPEAKER_06: So uh, but yeah, obviously big game coming up uh tomorrow on Wednesday and uh and on Saturday.
- 40:07SPEAKER_06: So, you know, obviously tune in as as Texas Tech fans do.
- 40:11SPEAKER_03: Before we move on from the Texas game, I mean I know we've already previewed these two teams together, and it's pretty much the same story as it was then, except a UT player just uh announced that he's taking a leave of absence.
- 40:22SPEAKER_06: You're right, you're right.
- 40:23SPEAKER_06: Breaking news we got right before we started recording.
- 40:26SPEAKER_06: Uh, it looks like Trey Mitchell's taking a personal leave from the uh Longhorns.
- 40:31SPEAKER_06: Um, you know, he was a highly, highly regarded transfer coming out of UMass and uh has started a good amount of games for Texas this year.
- 40:39SPEAKER_06: I think he's most recently come off the bench, but uh they didn't explain why, they just called it a personal leave.
- 40:45SPEAKER_06: Uh, it could mean uh a ton of things, but uh you know, if he's taking it right now, the Longhorns are playing OU currently.
- 40:53SPEAKER_06: Um, I I don't imagine he's back for the Texas game, and that's uh that's a big loss for them.
- 40:57SPEAKER_03: It is, it's huge.
- 40:59SPEAKER_03: And um also another thing is apparently Brock Cunningham said he's gonna be the F out of town when the Red Raiders show up.
- 41:07SPEAKER_03: So that's a that's another huge loss to that team, a true contributor.
- 41:11SPEAKER_03: Blue guy, um, culture man is unfortunately said he's going to avoid said game.
- 41:17SPEAKER_06: Chris Beard is crying in the corner because he can't play Brock Cunningham more.
- 41:21SPEAKER_06: Uh, but the good news is the good news is he can still play Avery Benson and he can still play the manager that got in there at the end of the Baylor game.
- 41:30SPEAKER_06: That dude, I couldn't stay like I like Fran Faschilla.
- 41:34SPEAKER_06: I do.
- 41:34SPEAKER_06: I think Fran's uh uh he's uh pro Big 12, he likes Texas Tech a lot.
- 41:41SPEAKER_06: He is, but he's really been on the beard train uh since he went to Texas, and all throughout that game, he's saying stuff like uh, like he's like, just wait, Texas gonna make a run, Texas gonna make a run.
- 41:55SPEAKER_06: And he's one of those guys who's like loves Brock Cunningham and loves the effort, and he's a culture guy, and he just said it constantly.
- 42:03SPEAKER_06: And at the end of the game, when they're down by 20, uh, and and and Beard throws in the the D2 manager guy or whatever, the the number, I don't know, number 16 or something, but uh Fran's over here, like Beard's trying to send a message to his players by throwing in the the white kid from the the division two athlete who wanted to be the manager.
- 42:28SPEAKER_06: It's like no Fran, they're just down by 20.
- 42:32SPEAKER_04: Fran, please.
- 42:34SPEAKER_06: Fran, they're down by 20.
- 42:36SPEAKER_06: Beard's like he may be trying to prove a message, but uh maybe they're just down by 20 and they're throwing in the bench.
- 42:44SPEAKER_03: Uh well, I mean, like it's hard to go hard to lean into it too much.
- 42:48SPEAKER_03: He's always been kind of a good edict egg with the big 12 at the Texas Tech, but that is pretty hilarious.
- 42:53SPEAKER_06: I'm pro-Fram, but he's tough to watch during a Texas game.
- 42:56SPEAKER_06: That's all I'll say.
- 42:57SPEAKER_06: Uh, but but yeah, yeah, that's uh Trey Mitchell's a big loss.
- 43:01SPEAKER_06: Uh that's gonna be that's gonna be tough to replace there, obviously.
- 43:04SPEAKER_06: Um probably leads to a few more minutes for Dylan Dissou, who is the Vanderbilt transfer, who's kind of fallen in the rotation a little bit, but uh Christian Bishop has kind of taken over that that starting big man role for them.
- 43:16SPEAKER_06: So um, you know, Texas's problem, a big problem with them has been foul trouble.
- 43:20SPEAKER_06: And so now they don't even they have another depth piece they lost just in case, you know, our boy Brock Cunningham goes and gets three fouls in three minutes like he usually does.
- 43:30SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's it's it's gonna be interesting to see how they they adjust with it.
- 43:33SPEAKER_03: And it's kind of funny, it'll be kind of funny to see.
- 43:35SPEAKER_03: Um if if if Trey Mitchell does indeed leave the program, and just kind of seems like we were seeing a more once again a trend with Chris Beard.
- 43:44SPEAKER_03: Like, can he hold the team together?
- 43:46SPEAKER_03: We've seen this before.
- 43:47SPEAKER_03: This would be the second player to leave, and it's not like these are bad players, like it's not like these are bench, just absolute bench warmers heading out, like these are talented players.
- 43:55SPEAKER_03: I mean, obviously, there's there he it could just be a family thing, um, and he's coming right back.
- 44:00SPEAKER_03: It just it's gonna be interesting to see, man.
- 44:02SPEAKER_03: I maybe it's gonna be just a recurring issue every single year with Chris Beard.
- 44:07SPEAKER_03: I don't know yet.
- 44:08SPEAKER_06: Yeah, I mean we've seen it with Texas Tack and Beard.
- 44:11SPEAKER_06: I mean, he's lost guys mid-season, so uh, you know, sometimes you just get too many people, and you think you can tell everybody to buy into the culture, and it just doesn't work out for you.
- 44:22SPEAKER_06: But you know, obviously we don't know how long Trey Mitchell's gonna be out if he's uh you know if he's returning to the team, if he's not.
- 44:28SPEAKER_06: So we're you know purely speculation, yeah, purely speculation.
- 44:31SPEAKER_06: But um, yeah, we did get Jalen Tyson back.
- 44:33SPEAKER_06: We can brag about that.
- 44:35SPEAKER_06: Yeah, yeah.
- 44:38SPEAKER_06: But yeah, no, huge game on Saturday.
- 44:40SPEAKER_06: You got any more on Texas?
- 44:43SPEAKER_03: Other than a wreck 'em, baby.
- 44:45SPEAKER_03: See y'all there.
- 44:46SPEAKER_06: Yeah, let's do it.
- 44:46SPEAKER_06: Hopefully, we see a bunch of y'all.
- 44:48SPEAKER_06: Um let's move on.
- 44:50SPEAKER_06: Baseball, baseball season is starting this weekend, Friday.
- 44:55SPEAKER_06: It's coming, it's right right around the corner, dude.
- 44:58SPEAKER_03: Heck yeah, man.
- 44:59SPEAKER_03: And uh, I don't think we can watch it, right?
- 45:01SPEAKER_03: Isn't it on some bogus TV network again?
- 45:04SPEAKER_03: Oh, is it?
- 45:04SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 45:05SPEAKER_03: I didn't I didn't think it's like one of those like flow TV crap, really to buy a little subscription.
- 45:11SPEAKER_03: I think so.
- 45:12SPEAKER_03: I don't think it's on ESBN Plus, so it might be a radio thing.
- 45:15SPEAKER_06: They're gonna work on their broadcasting stuff.
- 45:18SPEAKER_06: Uh not not a very highly broadcast, just put it on ESPN Plus.
- 45:22SPEAKER_03: Why not?
- 45:22SPEAKER_03: I know, man.
- 45:23SPEAKER_03: I mean, I think it's mostly gonna be on ESPN Plus, but a weird ass network like what I just said, it wants to buy the rights to a tournament or an event.
- 45:31SPEAKER_03: I mean, look, what is ESPN gonna do?
- 45:32SPEAKER_03: Be like, oh no, here's war money for this thing we're gonna have for the rest of the year.
- 45:37SPEAKER_03: Yeesh.
- 45:39SPEAKER_06: Uh yeah, that I mean that would suck if we can't watch it.
- 45:42SPEAKER_06: I didn't I didn't realize that, but uh nonetheless, it's gonna be a uh really tough opening weekend like it was last year.
- 45:48SPEAKER_06: Um, we're opening up in the uh uh this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday gonna be the 2022 State Farm College Baseball Showdown at Globe Life Field.
- 45:58SPEAKER_06: So um I don't know if we were in this exact tournament last year, but we definitely played at Globe Life, I think, uh to open the season.
- 46:06SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 46:06SPEAKER_03: Was it was a Globe Life or was it a Minute Made that we opened up with?
- 46:11SPEAKER_06: Oh, now I'm now I'm stumbling over everything.
- 46:14SPEAKER_06: I don't know what the heck happened.
- 46:15SPEAKER_06: I don't remember either, but I don't know what happened to the minutes.
- 46:20SPEAKER_06: Yeah, no, it was it was tough.
- 46:21SPEAKER_06: And we started off the season 0-3 last year and then ended up having a having a pretty good year.
- 46:25SPEAKER_06: So um I like opening up against really good teams.
- 46:28SPEAKER_06: Uh, we're opening up Friday against Michigan, uh, Saturday against Auburn, and Sunday against Arizona.
- 46:34SPEAKER_06: So uh all three squads.
- 46:36SPEAKER_06: Yeah, all three of these squads are really good, and um, you know, I'm excited.
- 46:40SPEAKER_06: I'm excited to get get it going, see some baseball.
- 46:43SPEAKER_03: Me too, dude.
- 46:44SPEAKER_03: I mean I'm excited for a second sport to come in.
- 46:46SPEAKER_03: It's you know, I love basketball, but it's nice to have two to balance between.
- 46:49SPEAKER_03: You know, we're in that part of the year where it's like, all right, I'm kind of ready for baseball to come around.
- 46:53SPEAKER_06: So I'm really excited about it, man.
- 46:55SPEAKER_06: Yeah, for sure.
- 46:56SPEAKER_06: Um, we're not gonna preview much baseball stuff on this podcast, but what we did do is me and Tristan both hopped on the No Doubter podcast uh about a week ago at this point.
- 47:05SPEAKER_06: But the episode I think is going to be released this Thursday.
- 47:08SPEAKER_06: So uh hopped on uh with our guys Travis and Barrett and uh had a had a blast talking some Texas Tech baseball.
- 47:15SPEAKER_06: So uh, you know, when that episode drops, uh make sure to go give it a listen.
- 47:19SPEAKER_03: Yeah, absolutely.
- 47:20SPEAKER_03: Steve and I do our best to throw on our baseball caps, no pun intended.
- 47:24SPEAKER_03: And uh they they they know their stuff, and they're a couple of Red Raider alums.
- 47:27SPEAKER_03: So be sure to use that as our preview episode for the season.
- 47:31SPEAKER_06: Yeah, no doubt.
- 47:32SPEAKER_06: And we'll keep you all updated, obviously, as the season goes on with some wins, losses, all that kind of good stuff.
- 47:38SPEAKER_06: Uh, hopefully not a lot of losses there, but um none.
- 47:41SPEAKER_06: Yeah, hopefully none.
- 47:42SPEAKER_06: How about that?
- 47:43SPEAKER_06: Undefeated season, Texas Tech Baseball, calling your shot.
- 47:46SPEAKER_06: I'm calling it now.
- 47:50SPEAKER_03: We did a lot of that on the episode.
- 47:51SPEAKER_03: We did a lot of it calling it now.
- 47:54SPEAKER_03: Texas Tech has gone too blank.
- 47:58SPEAKER_06: No spoilers, but uh we were spoilers, we were definitely confident in Texas Tech Baseball.
- 48:03SPEAKER_06: So that's all we'll say.
- 48:04SPEAKER_06: All hail Tim Tadlock was what that episode was.
- 48:07SPEAKER_06: Yes, yes.
- 48:08SPEAKER_06: It was just a giant hour and a half episode of just praising Tim Tadlock.
- 48:12SPEAKER_06: So uh yeah, but but let's move on.
- 48:15SPEAKER_06: Um, football recruiting.
- 48:17SPEAKER_06: Uh some big news this past week.
- 48:19SPEAKER_06: Joey McGuire continues to kill it in the class of 2023.
- 48:24SPEAKER_06: We are now ranked, and this is not I'm not lying here.
- 48:29SPEAKER_06: We're ranked number six in the nation in the class of 2023 by 247 and number five in the nation by rivals in in the nation.
- 48:42SPEAKER_03: Hashtag let's go.
- 48:45SPEAKER_03: And uh with a Ric Flair voice, of course.
- 48:48SPEAKER_03: Dude, freaking incredible.
- 48:50SPEAKER_03: This is this is absolutely on base to being our the best Texas Tech recruiting class and the age of these sort of star uh systems.
- 48:59SPEAKER_03: And I'm so I'm I'm floored.
- 49:01SPEAKER_03: We haven't played a single football game, and he's already bringing in the literally the best recruits we've ever gotten.
- 49:05SPEAKER_03: It's it's it's it's incredible.
- 49:07SPEAKER_03: Him and Jamie, him, him and Blanchard have just gone off.
- 49:11SPEAKER_06: Yeah, it's been it's been a sight to see.
- 49:13SPEAKER_06: Uh, and definitely a really, really different change of pace from the past two head coaches that we've had.
- 49:20SPEAKER_06: Uh, just getting these talented kids on the team.
- 49:23SPEAKER_06: And and obviously Joey hasn't coached a game yet.
- 49:25SPEAKER_06: You know, we we we still need to see that type, but uh the fact that he's getting this type of class, uh, and he hasn't even coached yet, uh, to Texas Tech, who, by the way, has not been very good at football this past decade.
- 49:41SPEAKER_06: Uh, is is that recruiting either?
- 49:44SPEAKER_06: Yeah, absolutely impressive.
- 49:45SPEAKER_06: Everything from from this staff has been insane.
- 49:49SPEAKER_03: I I think that's this is exactly what we needed.
- 49:51SPEAKER_03: I mean, obviously, everyone's gonna say, well, obviously, need good good recruits to win, but I mean, some coaches are recruiters, and I think that Joey McGuire is a recruiter, and I think that's what you need at a place like Texas Tech.
- 50:03SPEAKER_03: I mean, you don't really have a brand to just sit there and rely on to get good players, you can't just hire a good coach and hope that the talent fills in.
- 50:09SPEAKER_03: No, you need to go find the good talent to fit into what you want to do with it.
- 50:12SPEAKER_03: So I'm glad that I think we finally have that.
- 50:15SPEAKER_03: I don't think that Matt Wells was that.
- 50:17SPEAKER_03: I think Matt Wells tried to ride the transfer system a little too hard.
- 50:21SPEAKER_03: Um, but I'm just glad that we have a guy that's so dedicated to the high school scene.
- 50:24SPEAKER_03: I think what's cool about this class is that all every single kid's from Texas right now.
- 50:29SPEAKER_03: So we are re-establishing ourselves as a Texas recruiting power, not so much as a a pick and pull from transfers here and there across the country that no, we're we're we're we're we're ready to be a force again in Texas.
- 50:41SPEAKER_03: It's the best football state in the country, and we're one of the biggest brands in said state.
- 50:45SPEAKER_03: We have no excuse not to be getting out here doing that, and they're showing that it's not a it's no, it's no big deal, you know.
- 50:50SPEAKER_03: It's a Lubbock is a great place, and kids want to come play here.
- 50:53SPEAKER_03: You just gotta sell it, you just gotta let them know that they do want to do it, you know.
- 50:57SPEAKER_06: Yeah, no doubt.
- 50:58SPEAKER_06: Um, three big time recruits this past week that we got, um, including two four stars.
- 51:05SPEAKER_03: Um one uh yeah, you know, just two four stars in two days, yeah.
- 51:10SPEAKER_06: Just uh your your normal Texas Tech recruiting going on over here.
- 51:14SPEAKER_06: Oh, another four star.
- 51:18SPEAKER_06: Here we go.
- 51:19SPEAKER_06: But no, we're now up to 13 total recruits in the class of 2023.
- 51:23SPEAKER_06: Um, that's I think that's the most that might be the most in all the nation right now, in terms of just pure numbers.
- 51:29SPEAKER_06: But um, you know, uh we get a four-star in Brendan Jordan uh safety out of Mansfield.
- 51:35SPEAKER_06: Uh he's the 17th ranked positionally uh according to 247.
- 51:40SPEAKER_06: Um I mean, just a massive pickup there.
- 51:43SPEAKER_06: Uh uh getting a four-star safety.
- 51:45SPEAKER_06: Obviously, we've seen Joey McGuire uh trying to build up this defense and really get our defense as a as a main focus for you know rebuilding this program and and getting a strong team going.
- 51:57SPEAKER_06: So uh this was a huge pickup.
- 51:59SPEAKER_03: If you're looking at 24-7, we have two four stars, and they're very stingy with their stars.
- 52:04SPEAKER_03: And if I sat here and told you that the only two four stars are defensive players at Texas Tech right now in this class, would you have believed me two years ago?
- 52:14SPEAKER_03: No chance.
- 52:15SPEAKER_03: You would have thought, like, oh, is it like a really good receiver?
- 52:18SPEAKER_03: You know, that's that's it.
- 52:19SPEAKER_03: I probably would have they probably would have stopped there, maybe a quarterback, but no, no, we we got we got defensive players here for four stars, just incredible stuff, man.
- 52:28SPEAKER_06: Yeah, and I think I saw a stat from uh Austin Massey that said that uh Brendan Jordan was like the 11th highest all-time recruit at tech in Texas tech history.
- 52:37SPEAKER_06: And for for us to get him in Joey Maguire again hasn't coached a game yet here, not a single one.
- 52:45SPEAKER_03: I this is nuts.
- 52:47SPEAKER_03: The the package deal we got from Waco with Joey Maguire, James Blanchard just can't be overstated.
- 52:52SPEAKER_03: I mean, James Blanchard, I don't think I've ever been watched so closely, a just a director of personnel at Texas Tech like this.
- 52:58SPEAKER_03: Like, and he makes his presence so known.
- 53:00SPEAKER_03: I love how active he is on Twitter.
- 53:01SPEAKER_03: I mean, obviously, he's a young man, and he so he kind of gets how that works.
- 53:05SPEAKER_03: So just seeing him light it up.
- 53:07SPEAKER_03: I love all this tweets saying, like, oh, they told me it was gonna be hard to recruit the love.
- 53:11SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 53:11SPEAKER_03: I love that kind of stuff, man.
- 53:13SPEAKER_03: And I'm sure the players do too.
- 53:15SPEAKER_03: So I'm just I I am so impressed, especially getting these West Texas guys like Isaiah Crawford, man, from post.
- 53:21SPEAKER_03: We gotta have those dudes.
- 53:22SPEAKER_06: Yeah, when you get it, when you get a really talented guy out of West Texas, he needs to go to Texas Tech.
- 53:27SPEAKER_06: That's and that's what this staff is focused on is getting West Texas and just getting Texas in general.
- 53:33SPEAKER_06: So right.
- 53:33SPEAKER_06: Um, the next one we got was uh Jamari Davis.
- 53:36SPEAKER_06: Uh he's a four-star athlete out of Clarendon.
- 53:39SPEAKER_06: Uh, according to Rivals, he's a four-star.
- 53:41SPEAKER_06: He's not ranked yet in 247.
- 53:43SPEAKER_06: Uh, but by rival standards, he was ranked the number 51 prospect in the state, uh, according to rivals.
- 53:49SPEAKER_06: So uh yeah, this is another big time pickup.
- 53:52SPEAKER_06: He's an athlete, he plays a multitude of positions.
- 53:54SPEAKER_06: We'll see what he plays when he gets to tech, but uh just getting this kind of talent is nuts.
- 53:59SPEAKER_03: Absolutely, man.
- 54:00SPEAKER_03: It happens when we play at these smaller schools, you know.
- 54:03SPEAKER_03: If you're a really good player, they're just gonna throw you all around, they fill in the space.
- 54:06SPEAKER_03: So uh again, another awesome lockup.
- 54:09SPEAKER_03: Um, the class looks way more impressive.
- 54:11SPEAKER_03: I mean, it looks impressive on 24-7, but we go to rivals, just like, oh man, yeah.
- 54:15SPEAKER_06: Rivals, I think we have like five four stars at this point.
- 54:18SPEAKER_06: Yeah, right.
- 54:19SPEAKER_06: Rivals is the real recruiting base to look at, guys.
- 54:22SPEAKER_06: Yeah, okay.
- 54:23SPEAKER_06: We all know that.
- 54:24SPEAKER_03: The real recruiting database to look at is the one that's biased towards my team.
- 54:30SPEAKER_03: Okay, let's get that straight.
- 54:32SPEAKER_03: We're big rivals guys here on this on this podcast right now.
- 54:36SPEAKER_06: Well, and we're saying this 247 could still rank some of these players, they haven't even gotten to them.
- 54:41SPEAKER_06: So, you know, with this class could be even better by the time those guys actually get looked at by 247.
- 54:47SPEAKER_06: So we'll see.
- 54:48SPEAKER_06: Uh, we also got a third recruit in Marcus uh Raymond Edwards.
- 54:52SPEAKER_06: He's a uh three-star athlete, uh, another athlete out of um Lubbock, Texas, uh a place that should be pretty well known, you know, in the Texas tech sphere.
- 55:02SPEAKER_03: Once more, the good players in Lubbock, you put the double T on him.
- 55:06SPEAKER_03: There's no excuse.
- 55:07SPEAKER_03: I mean, obviously, some will slip through the cracks, some of them are just ready to get the heck out of Lubbock, whatever.
- 55:12SPEAKER_03: But the ones that do want to play for the school they probably grew up cheering for, you have to get them.
- 55:17SPEAKER_06: Yeah, yeah, no doubt.
- 55:18SPEAKER_06: And uh apparently this guy just kind of does it all.
- 55:21SPEAKER_06: He's played a lot of different positions, he's tall, he's like 6'4, like 230 already.
- 55:27SPEAKER_06: Um, and apparently he's gonna play a defensive back position from from what we've heard, kind of playing corner safety or uh something.
- 55:34SPEAKER_06: But again, he's just an athlete and he's just a guy who he plays a uh a few different sports.
- 55:40SPEAKER_06: I think he's a really good basketball player as well.
- 55:42SPEAKER_06: So um, just out here retaining the love of kids.
- 55:45SPEAKER_06: That's what we need to do.
- 55:46SPEAKER_06: Defense, yes, thank you, defense always, and also I don't know, just keep an eye out, just rumors.
- 55:54SPEAKER_06: Uh, right before we start recording, uh, we got some news that uh Kari Coleman has entered the transfer portal.
- 56:00SPEAKER_06: This is a defensive end/slash linebacker for TCU last season.
- 56:05SPEAKER_06: Uh, he has entered his name in the transfer portal, and you know, we kind of have a guy who coached him last year in Zarnell Fitch.
- 56:11SPEAKER_06: So uh just keep an eye out for that.
- 56:14SPEAKER_03: We also stand Zarnell Fitch.
- 56:16SPEAKER_03: I love that dude's energy on Twitter, man.
- 56:18SPEAKER_03: I I love how he's already embraced Lubbock and Tech Tech and coming from a rival program, he just immediately just sucked up the community and and has embraced it and wears it on his sleeve.
- 56:27SPEAKER_03: My favorite tweet from him was like, they lied to you about Lubbock, Texas.
- 56:31SPEAKER_03: I loved that, man.
- 56:32SPEAKER_03: I just I love this coaching staff just putting their not even probably not even putting their salesman caps on, but just speaking the truth, you know, just like Lubbock gets way too much crap.
- 56:41SPEAKER_03: Even Jeff Goodman would agree to it now.
- 56:43SPEAKER_03: You know, I he defended it Lubbock today, you know.
- 56:45SPEAKER_03: So it's just it's a great place, and I'm glad people are finally realizing it.
- 56:50SPEAKER_06: Again, we've seen it from these past two coaching hires.
- 56:52SPEAKER_06: I mean, Mark Adams uh says everything good he can about West Texas and Lubbock and Texas Tech.
- 56:57SPEAKER_06: And uh, we got a we got a West Coast guy in Barrett Peary who came in here and uh you know really got into the culture and uh was great on social media, hyping up the fan base and everything, and that's what exactly what this football staff is doing.
- 57:12SPEAKER_06: Uh guys that aren't necessarily from West Texas, but uh they're coming in and they're embracing the culture of West Texas.
- 57:18SPEAKER_03: Let's just hope that the the the coach recruiting hand that Kirby Hook has got going right now has hit with Texas Tech football right uh, you know, too.
- 57:26SPEAKER_03: Because I mean they they're dude, they're winning the offseason, and I can't wait to see them on the field in the season.
- 57:32SPEAKER_03: I mean, obviously, year one, I'm not expecting any championships or anything like that, but I'm just excited to see some excitement again.
- 57:37SPEAKER_03: I love what I'm seeing on off the field, so I'm excited to see what happens on the field as well.
- 57:41SPEAKER_06: For sure, for sure.
- 57:43SPEAKER_06: So, but with everything good comes at least something bad.
- 57:46SPEAKER_06: Um, coach, running back coach DeAndre Smith has decided to take a uh job with the New York Giants in the NFL.
- 57:55SPEAKER_06: So we are in uh on the lookout for a new running backs coach at Texas Tech.
- 58:00SPEAKER_03: What a lateral move, man.
- 58:08SPEAKER_03: No, uh no, not a lateral move.
- 58:12SPEAKER_03: Not a lot, not a lateral move.
- 58:13SPEAKER_03: But seriously, though, I mean, I he was the one coach we retained from the last step that showed how much Joe McGuire liked him and believed in him, and he's done a great job with our running back.
- 58:22SPEAKER_03: So running back core has been phenomenal.
- 58:23SPEAKER_03: It's not been the reason why Matt Wells failed, that's for sure.
- 58:26SPEAKER_03: So um all props to him, man.
- 58:29SPEAKER_03: Chasing those NFL dreams.
- 58:30SPEAKER_03: I mean, I'm sure a lot of coaches do dream of that, and I mean it's the premiere, you know.
- 58:34SPEAKER_03: You it's it's it's the top level of football, and I can't blame him for taking that chance.
- 58:38SPEAKER_06: Yeah, I mean, he's taking the exact same position, but with an NFL team, so you can't blame him for that.
- 58:43SPEAKER_06: Uh obviously, you know, uh, I I you know everybody can calm down a little bit.
- 58:48SPEAKER_06: Donovan Smith is not going to be transferring to the New York Giants.
- 58:52SPEAKER_06: Uh, I can be able to confirm though.
- 58:54SPEAKER_06: It's okay, 99% sure he's not gonna transfer to the New York Giants, so everybody can kind of cool it on that.
- 59:03SPEAKER_03: Well, I mean that kind of does adjust the dynamic with Donovan Smith at Tex Tech, don't you think?
- 59:07SPEAKER_03: Like not having that on the staff.
- 59:10SPEAKER_06: No, I don't really think so.
- 59:11SPEAKER_06: I think you know, it obviously stinks because he has a really tight relationship with him, and you know, you love seeing him on the sidelines and seeing him every day and all that kind of stuff.
- 59:18SPEAKER_06: But um, no, I don't think this has anything to do with like anything towards Donovan potentially leaving or trying to get closer to the family or whatever.
- 59:27SPEAKER_06: You know, I I think Donovan's here to stay, and he proved himself a good amount last season.
- 59:31SPEAKER_06: So uh this will be fun.
- 59:33SPEAKER_06: I uh Donovan is gonna be fighting against Tyler Shuck and Barron Morton for that spot, and I think he's he's here for it.
- 59:39SPEAKER_03: That's a good point.
- 59:40SPEAKER_03: I I don't think I don't think dad makes that move if Donovan isn't like 100% ready to to move, just take hold of what he has and move forward, you know.
- 59:48SPEAKER_03: So it's kind of it's kind of like a growing up thing, you know.
- 59:50SPEAKER_03: It's just like and it's just here he is, he's got his position, he's just gonna byport on his own now.
- 59:55SPEAKER_03: So I'm not saying that dad had an influence in that, but you get what I'm saying.
- 59:58SPEAKER_06: Yeah, no, he definitely had an influence on going to tech, I'm sure.
- 1:00:02SPEAKER_06: Oh, for sure.
- 1:00:02SPEAKER_06: But I mean, like, I mean, yeah, like playing time, yeah.
- 1:00:04SPEAKER_06: Oh, yeah, but now that he's proved himself, he had those really solid games and then you know won the Mississippi State, the bull game.
- 1:00:10SPEAKER_06: He's he's riding high on that.
- 1:00:12SPEAKER_06: So uh, you know, Donovan's gonna be very much in the running for starting next season.
- 1:00:16SPEAKER_06: But uh yeah, sad to see sad to see DeAndre Smith go, but I'm sure Joey McGuire will find a good replacement.
- 1:00:23SPEAKER_03: Absolutely, man.
- 1:00:24SPEAKER_03: I'm excited to see what we bring in.
- 1:00:25SPEAKER_03: I mean, I've loved the dudes he's brought in.
- 1:00:27SPEAKER_03: I I've loved every single coach.
- 1:00:29SPEAKER_03: So I'm excited to see if he could bring another energetic dude that just loves West Texas and is ready to sell it as well.
- 1:00:34SPEAKER_06: Yep, no doubt.
- 1:00:35SPEAKER_06: So uh let's let's finish off before selling the week with some softball because softball season has already started for Texas Tech, and it's a good start.
- 1:00:43SPEAKER_06: Three and one uh to start off the year, uh, two wins over UTSA and then splitting a pair of games against U of H in the Houston Invitational.
- 1:00:53SPEAKER_06: So three and one start, you can't hate it.
- 1:00:55SPEAKER_03: No, absolutely not.
- 1:00:57SPEAKER_03: So, I mean, I like the way we're doing in the men's time, and let's see the women's hopefully pick up some speed here.
- 1:01:02SPEAKER_03: I think it's year two for our new coach.
- 1:01:04SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 1:01:05SPEAKER_03: So it'll be it'll be exciting to see how she evolves here in West Texas as well.
- 1:01:09SPEAKER_06: Yep, no doubt.
- 1:01:10SPEAKER_06: And uh we'll see what they're really made of in this next uh six-game stretch at the St.
- 1:01:16SPEAKER_06: Pete Clearwater Elite Invitational.
- 1:01:19SPEAKER_06: Uh, some names here that we're gonna play.
- 1:01:22SPEAKER_06: Um, playing Auburn, Clemson, Northwestern, UCF, Washington, and LSU.
- 1:01:28SPEAKER_06: So uh the ladies have a uh a really tough start to the season, but you know, if they're they're ready to prove themselves, I'm ready to watch some good Texas Tech softball.
- 1:01:37SPEAKER_03: I mean, like you just said, uh I like starting with the tough teams, man.
- 1:01:40SPEAKER_03: Let's see what we're made of immediately, see what we have to improve.
- 1:01:42SPEAKER_03: And uh, you know, there's nothing wrong with just testing your medal right out of the gate.
- 1:01:46SPEAKER_06: No doubt.
- 1:01:46SPEAKER_06: That's what baseball's doing too.
- 1:01:47SPEAKER_06: So love to see it.
- 1:01:48SPEAKER_06: But um, cheer on the ladies this season.
- 1:01:50SPEAKER_06: I'm sure most games are gonna be on ESPN Plus.
- 1:01:53SPEAKER_06: If not, you'll find them on you know whatever network that's on, but I'm sure most will be on ESPN Plus.
- 1:01:58SPEAKER_06: Um, should you have anything else?
- 1:02:01SPEAKER_03: No, man.
- 1:02:01SPEAKER_03: I think that'll that'll pull it for the week here, man.
- 1:02:03SPEAKER_03: I'm just excited to get uh get down to Austin with you.
- 1:02:06SPEAKER_03: Yes, yes, excited.
- 1:02:07SPEAKER_06: Uh leaving here on Thursday.
- 1:02:09SPEAKER_06: Uh, gonna have uh some good old fun this weekend, man.
- 1:02:12SPEAKER_06: It's gonna be it's gonna be good to be with the boys watching some Texas Tech basketball.
- 1:02:16SPEAKER_03: It'll be a bad day to be a beer.
- 1:02:19SPEAKER_06: Yes, it will.
- 1:02:20SPEAKER_06: That bad day, really bad.
- 1:02:23SPEAKER_03: Really bad day to be a to be a beer in Austin.
- 1:02:26SPEAKER_06: Yes, we are gonna take over Austin.
- 1:02:28SPEAKER_06: But uh let's finish her off here on this episode with Song of the Week, like we do every single episode.
- 1:02:36SPEAKER_06: Tristan, your song of the week.
- 1:02:39SPEAKER_03: All right, so my song of the week is kind of like a contradic contradiction of what I just said, but it's a great fun song that uh about a magical liquid that I'm sure many of us love.
- 1:02:49SPEAKER_03: And the song is called Topa Chico by Robert Ellis, the Texas Piano Man.
- 1:02:55SPEAKER_03: The album is called the Texas Piano Man, and uh I like his style, you know.
- 1:02:59SPEAKER_03: He's he's she's kind of got this like sort of honky tonky uh piano pianist thing going for him.
- 1:03:05SPEAKER_03: He's really fun.
- 1:03:05SPEAKER_03: And Topo Chico is just such a fun song, it's literally just a song about Topa Chico, and that's all it is.
- 1:03:11SPEAKER_03: So it's it's just a fun song, man.
- 1:03:14SPEAKER_03: And I'm sure all of y'all will get what I'm saying whenever you listen to it.
- 1:03:19SPEAKER_00: Topo Chico in lime, Topo Chico in lime.
- 1:03:33SPEAKER_06: You tried uh you tried the new Topo Chico seltzers, yeah, dude.
- 1:03:38SPEAKER_06: I like them.
- 1:03:38SPEAKER_06: They're probably my favorite seltzers.
- 1:03:40SPEAKER_06: They're up there.
- 1:03:41SPEAKER_06: Carbock makes a good seltzer, actually.
- 1:03:43SPEAKER_03: I have actually I think I've tried the ranch water.
- 1:03:45SPEAKER_03: Ranch water is really good.
- 1:03:47SPEAKER_06: Yeah, they have some some funky flavors that you don't normally get.
- 1:03:50SPEAKER_06: That's there's too many seltzers.
- 1:03:52SPEAKER_06: That's all I'll say.
- 1:03:52SPEAKER_06: There's too way too many.
- 1:03:54SPEAKER_03: I don't like that they're called I don't think they're I don't like that they're called ranch water when they're not ranch water.
- 1:03:58SPEAKER_03: Like you're kind of muddling whatever ranch water is by calling it ranch water, but uh, but no man, uh, I do like the topo seltzer.
- 1:04:06SPEAKER_06: The topo seltzer is pretty solid.
- 1:04:08SPEAKER_06: Uh that's a good choice for your song of the week.
- 1:04:11SPEAKER_06: Um, you know, everybody loves a good Topo Chico.
- 1:04:13SPEAKER_06: I've uh yeah, I know you love them.
- 1:04:16SPEAKER_03: I do.
- 1:04:17SPEAKER_03: Big Topo guy over here, um, especially with tequila in it, that's for sure.
- 1:04:22SPEAKER_06: There you go.
- 1:04:23SPEAKER_06: Spice it up a little bit.
- 1:04:24SPEAKER_06: Gotta love it.
- 1:04:25SPEAKER_06: Um, no, my song of the week.
- 1:04:27SPEAKER_06: If you watched the Super Bowl, like most people did, I'm sure.
- 1:04:30SPEAKER_06: Uh, you saw a really good halftime show.
- 1:04:32SPEAKER_06: I was really uh entertained by every artist out there.
- 1:04:36SPEAKER_06: Um, you know, 50 Cent coming flying in upside down.
- 1:04:40SPEAKER_06: Uh got a little lose yourself, mom spaghetti a little bit rolling.
- 1:04:44SPEAKER_03: Palms are sweaty.
- 1:04:46SPEAKER_06: Palms are sweaty indeed.
- 1:04:49SPEAKER_06: Um, no, but I thought uh, you know, what when there was an age, there was an age range there that just thoroughly, thoroughly enjoyed this halftime show.
- 1:05:00SPEAKER_06: And then, you know, another artist comes on, and that's when you start getting, well, well, who's that?
- 1:05:06SPEAKER_06: You know, I know Dr.
- 1:05:08SPEAKER_06: Dre, I know Snoop Dogg, I know 50 Cent, I know Eminem, I know Mary J.
- 1:05:13SPEAKER_06: Blige, but who's that other guy?
- 1:05:15SPEAKER_06: And it's Kendrick Lamar.
- 1:05:17SPEAKER_06: Kendrick Lamar's fantastic.
- 1:05:18SPEAKER_06: He was uh definitely an underrated part of that halftime show, I thought.
- 1:05:22SPEAKER_06: Obviously, you know, not really the same era as that other group, but I'm a big Kendrick guy, and my song of the week is Swimming Pools by Kendrick Lamar.
- 1:05:39SPEAKER_01: Some people want to kill their sorrows, some people want to fit in with the popular that was my pride.
- 1:05:45SPEAKER_03: Bro, I remember pretty much every day driving home from high school, or anytime he had the aux cord, you're gonna throw on Kendrick Lamar.
- 1:05:52SPEAKER_03: And and same in college for the most like, and especially at the beginning, you know.
- 1:05:55SPEAKER_03: So I remember TH Steven was obsessed with Kendrick Lamar.
- 1:05:58SPEAKER_03: So I like you bringing it back here.
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_06: Still obsessed, he's one of the all-timers, man.
- 1:06:02SPEAKER_06: I love Kendrick.
- 1:06:03SPEAKER_06: Um, I thought his performance was cool, uh, a couple good songs, but obviously the highlights are gonna be the old guys and you know coming back.
- 1:06:10SPEAKER_06: Sleep was great.
- 1:06:11SPEAKER_06: Everybody was great, it was a great halftime show.
- 1:06:13SPEAKER_03: Oh, it was a great halftime show, yeah.
- 1:06:15SPEAKER_06: No doubt.
- 1:06:16SPEAKER_06: So one of one of the better ones I've seen in the recent, recent past for sure.
- 1:06:20SPEAKER_06: Easily.
- 1:06:21SPEAKER_06: Um, but all right, dude, let's end it.
- 1:06:24SPEAKER_06: Uh, this is a great episode.
- 1:06:25SPEAKER_06: It was fun uh hopping back on with you uh again because it's been a hot minute since we've recorded.
- 1:06:31SPEAKER_06: So uh glad to talk some tech hoops and get ready for the week.
- 1:06:34SPEAKER_06: But uh let's end it off with some plugs, like we always do.
- 1:06:38SPEAKER_06: You can follow both me and Tristan on Twitter, Tristan's at Tristy Mick.
- 1:06:40SPEAKER_06: I'm at L underscore S underscore Rodriguez.
- 1:06:43SPEAKER_06: Follow the pod on Twitter at talking tech pod.
- 1:06:46SPEAKER_06: Follow the songs of the week playlist, they are on Spotify and Apple Music.
- 1:06:50SPEAKER_06: Um, and you can just, you know, rate, review, subscribe to the podcast, tell everybody you know about us.
- 1:06:56SPEAKER_06: And uh, you know, we really do appreciate everybody listening.
- 1:06:59SPEAKER_06: And uh let's end it always.
- 1:07:01SPEAKER_06: Wreck'em tech.
- 1:07:03SPEAKER_03: Wreck Chris Beard again and Wreck'em Tech.
- 1:07:06SPEAKER_03: Uh wow.
- 1:07:07SPEAKER_00: First of all, uh got a lot of respect for Steven and Tristan.
- 1:07:12SPEAKER_00: Uh their program, tough guys, just uh a lot of fun.
- 1:07:16SPEAKER_00: I love the game of basketball, but I also love West Texas, and I love Steven and Tristan.
- 1:07:22SPEAKER_00: So I'm extremely proud.
- 1:07:23SPEAKER_00: Well, I don't know where we go from here.
- 1:07:25SPEAKER_00: I'm I'm thinking I'm just gonna sit back down.
- 1:07:27SPEAKER_00: It's just not getting better than this.
- 1:07:29SPEAKER_02: I would like to thank uh Steven and Tristan.
- 1:07:32SPEAKER_02: This is incredible.
- 1:07:33SPEAKER_06: These guys have a passion and a love for this school.
