- 0:04Speaker 1: shall deliver you out of the hand of all your enemies.
- 0:08Speaker 1: 2 Kings 17.39 Lord, because you have created me to
- 0:15Speaker 1: live in freedom, I will not hand the keys of
- 0:18Speaker 1: my life over to ungodly relationships and traditions, so that
- 0:23Speaker 1: I remain captive to their harmful and manipulative tactics. I
- 0:28Speaker 1: will not be immersed in evil, like the children of Israel.
- 0:33Speaker 1: I will not go into a cycle of unfaithfulness because
- 0:36Speaker 1: of a false promise of abundance. Even if I fall,
- 0:41Speaker 1: I will be quick to call on your name to
- 0:44Speaker 1: deliver me and bring me to a place of rest
- 0:47Speaker 1: and restoration. No matter what the situation looks like, I
- 0:53Speaker 1: will remind myself that you are never too far. I

- 1:01Speaker 1: to forget my shortcomings. When others seek to take advantage
- 1:07Speaker 1: of my vulnerable moments and mistakes, I thank you, Lord,
- 1:11Speaker 1: for sending people in my life like the lions of
- 1:14Speaker 1: 2 Kings 17, who will roar and fight on my behalf. Today,
- 1:21Speaker 1: I confess that the hooks of the enemy are being
- 1:25Speaker 1: removed from my mouth. and that I will speak your

- 1:59Speaker 2: Israel's Sin and Punishment In our last story, we learned
- 2:04Speaker 2: about the wicked king Ahaz. He ruled Judah with idolatry
- 2:09Speaker 2: and evil. His twisted practices and unstable mind made Judah
- 2:13Speaker 2: vulnerable to attack. Now we learn about the tragedy of Israel.
- 2:17Speaker 2: Its walls would crumble, its cities would burn, and its
- 2:20Speaker 2: people would suffer. We witness the downfall of Israel as
- 2:24Speaker 2: people are carted away like cattle to the slaughter. Naked, afflicted,
- 2:29Speaker 2: and alone, Israel still clings to its idolatry, inspired by
- 2:33Speaker 2: the book of 2 Kings.
- 2:38Speaker 3: We're so glad you joined us on the Bible in
- 2:40Speaker 3: a Year podcast today. The Bible in a Year podcast
- 2:43Speaker 3: is an outreach of PowerPoint Ministries and can only come
- 2:47Speaker 3: to you each week through the support of listeners just
- 2:49Speaker 3: like you. Your support today is so important that we
- 2:53Speaker 3: want to thank you for your gift by giving you
- 2:55Speaker 3: a copy of my book called The Jesus Book. It
- 2:58Speaker 3: is a powerful guide that shows how every book of
- 3:01Speaker 3: the Bible points to Jesus and how his living word,
- 3:04Speaker 3: the truth of God's word, will transform your life. So
- 3:08Speaker 3: to get a copy of The Jesus Book, simply go
- 3:11Speaker 3: to jackgram.org slash Jesus. That's jackgram.org slash Jesus. And thank
- 3:18Speaker 3: you for your support. In our previous episode, we heard
- 3:23Speaker 3: about King Ahaz and his complete rebellion against God. He
- 3:28Speaker 3: did despicable things, killing his own children to sacrifice to
- 3:32Speaker 3: pagan gods. Ahaz suffered God's judgment as Syria and Israel
- 3:36Speaker 3: both went to war against Judah and took land, devastated
- 3:40Speaker 3: Judah's army, and plundered its cities. Still, Ahaz refused to
- 3:45Speaker 3: humble himself and turned to God. He bowed to more
- 3:48Speaker 3: and more foreign idols until he finally died never experiencing
- 3:52Speaker 3: peace or salvation. Today, we'll turn north once again to
- 3:57Speaker 3: the kingdom of Israel. They too are plunged into deep
- 4:01Speaker 3: darkness and God's anger will burn against them, leaving devastated cities,
- 4:05Speaker 3: suffering people, and citizens taken as slaves of the enemy. Yet,
- 4:10Speaker 3: just as Ahaz did, they will not release their idols
- 4:14Speaker 3: or turn from their evil because these foreign gods gripped
- 4:17Speaker 3: their hearts. Let's listen now to today's reading of God's Word.
- 4:23Speaker 2: Violence and bloodshed marked the beginning of King Hoshea's reign.
- 4:28Speaker 2: He led a coup against King Pekah of Israel and
- 4:31Speaker 2: seized the throne. Pekah's blood cried out in condemnation against Hoshea.
- 4:36Speaker 2: He was a cowardly and evil man, although not an
- 4:39Speaker 2: idol worshiper like his forefathers. Rather than degrade the God
- 4:43Speaker 2: of Israel, idolatry, and false sacrifice, Hoshea sinned politically. He
- 4:49Speaker 2: compromised the safety and integrity of Israel by pledging allegiance
- 4:53Speaker 2: to Shalmaneser, king of Assyria. Every year, Hoshea would give
- 4:58Speaker 2: a tribute to Shalmaneser in exchange for safety and favor.
- 5:02Speaker 2: To Hoshea, it seemed like he was protecting his people.
- 5:05Speaker 2: In actuality, he was sending them into their doom. One night,
- 5:09Speaker 2: Hoshea sent his servants with an important message. The message
- 5:13Speaker 2: was for So, king of Egypt. In it was a
- 5:16Speaker 2: lengthy plea to wage war against Syria in exchange for
- 5:19Speaker 2: Israel's loyalty. After hundreds of years of freedom, Hoshea was
- 5:23Speaker 2: about to make Israel slaves to Egypt once again. The
- 5:27Speaker 2: messengers rode fast under the cover of midnight. Their horses
- 5:30Speaker 2: huffed under the darkness, and only the moon lit their way.
- 5:34Speaker 2: As the riders drew closer to Egypt, they were interrupted
- 5:37Speaker 2: by a band of Assyrian spies. It surrounded the messengers.
- 5:41Speaker 2: Inch by inch, they drew closer. Then, with one scoop
- 5:45Speaker 2: of their spear, they killed them. The message was received
- 5:48Speaker 2: by Shalamein Seir. Livid, he mounted his chariot and began
- 5:52Speaker 2: his journey to Israel. Hosea was walking in his gardens.
- 5:57Speaker 2: He paced among the rose bushes, hoping to hear word
- 6:00Speaker 2: back from the king of Egypt. He could hear footsteps
- 6:03Speaker 2: behind him. Perhaps his messengers had returned. Hosea turned around
- 6:08Speaker 2: to the blunt side of a blade against his temple.
- 6:11Speaker 2: Hosea fell to the ground unconscious. When he awoke, he
- 6:16Speaker 2: was in an Assyrian prison. Chains choked at his throat,
- 6:19Speaker 2: and the darkness of the cell was broken by only
- 6:22Speaker 2: one torchlight. Hosea would never see his kingdom again. The
- 6:27Speaker 2: king of Assyria unleashed a tidal wave of hate and
- 6:30Speaker 2: fury onto Samaria. The people of Israel were taken captive.
- 6:34Speaker 2: They were stripped of their clothes, beaten, and then taken
- 6:37Speaker 2: away towards Assyria. Thousands of Israelites winced in pain as
- 6:41Speaker 2: the Assyrians put fishhooks through their lower lips and tied
- 6:44Speaker 2: them to strings attached to the horses. Tied by fishhooks,
- 6:49Speaker 2: the Israelites marched through the wilderness, naked and helpless. They
- 6:53Speaker 2: were dispersed around Assyria to Halal, Habor, Gozan, and Medes.
- 6:59Speaker 2: In all their suffering, so many people refused to cry
- 7:03Speaker 2: out to God. Their idolatry was impeded deep in their hearts.
- 7:07Speaker 2: They feared other gods and had forgotten the God that
- 7:10Speaker 2: saved them from the fist of Pharaoh in Egypt. In
- 7:14Speaker 2: the last 200 years since King Solomon, they had erected
- 7:17Speaker 2: pillars for other gods. They had condoned human sacrifice. They
- 7:21Speaker 2: even gave their own children as burnt offerings. They had
- 7:25Speaker 2: forsaken charity, kindness towards foreigners, and humility. They served idols
- 7:31Speaker 2: and themselves. The Lord had sent countless prophets to warn them.
- 7:35Speaker 2: He warned them of how unstable they were becoming. He
- 7:38Speaker 2: warned them that their might as a nation was only
- 7:41Speaker 2: as strong as their relationship with Him. But they would
- 7:44Speaker 2: not listen. They were stiff-necked. They hated the law of
- 7:48Speaker 2: the Lord. They adopted the practices of other nations. As
- 7:52Speaker 2: a result, they were captured like other nations. So the
- 7:55Speaker 2: Israelites were given to their own desires— Now they were
- 7:59Speaker 2: truly like other nations. They faced the demise and humiliation
- 8:03Speaker 2: of kingdoms that lived in a chaotic world. All but
- 8:07Speaker 2: Judah were carted off like cattle to Assyria. Their pain-filled
- 8:11Speaker 2: moans echoed across the canyons, as did the screams of
- 8:15Speaker 2: fishhooks being ripped off of children's lips. The sight filled
- 8:19Speaker 2: God with sorrow, and he waited for them to cry
- 8:22Speaker 2: out to him, but they did not. As the people
- 8:25Speaker 2: were being taken away, the city of Samaria was destroyed.
- 8:29Speaker 2: Its walls were crushed and its homes were burnt. All
- 8:32Speaker 2: that remained were palaces and buildings that the Assyrian people occupied. However,
- 8:37Speaker 2: the Assyrians were unaware that the city belonged to God.
- 8:41Speaker 2: As they drunkenly laughed in the temple halls, a roar
- 8:44Speaker 2: could be heard from the city streets. God sent a
- 8:48Speaker 2: pride of lions from the wilderness to drive out the Assyrians.
- 8:51Speaker 2: King Shalaman Seir was a brutal man, But wise and inquisitive,
- 8:56Speaker 2: he appointed some priests to teach him and his men
- 9:00Speaker 2: about the ways of God. Yet this did not sway him.
- 9:08Speaker 3: We open today's passage to find a bloody coup as
- 9:11Speaker 3: Hosea overthrew Israel's king, Pekah. Hosea was a faithless king,
- 9:17Speaker 3: though as we learned his idols were not carved images
- 9:20Speaker 3: like so many of the kings worshipped before him. No,
- 9:23Speaker 3: King Hoshea worshipped at a different altar, that of political
- 9:28Speaker 3: alliance with a foreign nation. Rather than trust God for
- 9:32Speaker 3: provision and protection, Hoshea turned to the king of Assyria,
- 9:36Speaker 3: submitting himself and his nation's security to him. To Hoshea,
- 9:41Speaker 3: this seemed like a wise choice. Assyria was, after all,
- 9:45Speaker 3: a mighty nation. But as Shalmaneser, king of Assyria, soon discovered,
- 9:50Speaker 3: Hosea's loyalty was not to him but to his own interest.
- 9:55Speaker 3: But even as he pledged loyalty to Assyria, Hosea engaged
- 10:00Speaker 3: in treachery. He sent messengers to the king of Egypt,
- 10:03Speaker 3: pledging loyalty to Egypt if they would attack and conquer Assyria.
- 10:07Speaker 3: As you might imagine, Shalmanesher was not too pleased when
- 10:11Speaker 3: he discovered this plan. For this, Hosea and all of
- 10:15Speaker 3: Israel paid dearly. Hosea was bound in chains and thrown
- 10:19Speaker 3: into prison, and for three years Israel was besieged by Assyria.
- 10:24Speaker 3: In the ninth year of Hosea's reign, Samaria fell to
- 10:27Speaker 3: the Assyrians and the people were captured and enslaved. It's obvious,
- 10:32Speaker 3: isn't it? When a nation and its leaders turn from God,
- 10:37Speaker 3: there is judgment that follows, always, and people suffer. The
- 10:42Speaker 3: very idols that people turn to today can ultimately enslave
- 10:47Speaker 3: and torture us. Our idols are not made with stones
- 10:51Speaker 3: or political alliances, but often those things that we love
- 10:55Speaker 3: or serve or worship more than God. After so many
- 10:59Speaker 3: years of unfaithfulness and idolatry, Israel faced the consequences of
- 11:05Speaker 3: their great sin. This was not the result of one
- 11:08Speaker 3: sin or even one generation of evil. Since they had
- 11:12Speaker 3: left Egypt, Israel had lived in a pattern of rejecting God,
- 11:17Speaker 3: desiring to be like other nations, rather than being set
- 11:19Speaker 3: apart and holy as God's people were designed to be.
- 11:23Speaker 3: Time and time again, God had sent prophets and leaders
- 11:26Speaker 3: to warn them and call them back into a relationship
- 11:29Speaker 3: with Him. We see this in 2 Kings 17, verse 13.
- 11:34Speaker 3: Yet the Lord warned Israel and Judah by every prophet
- 11:38Speaker 3: and every seer, saying, Turn from your evil ways and
- 11:41Speaker 3: keep my commandments and my statutes, in accordance with my
- 11:44Speaker 3: law that I commanded your fathers and that I sent
- 11:47Speaker 3: to you by my servants the prophets. But rebellious people
- 11:52Speaker 3: continued to go further and further away from God, embracing
- 11:56Speaker 3: the cultures, the customs, and the carved enemies of the world.
- 12:02Speaker 3: So Israel's people were dispersed as slaves to cities throughout Assyria.
- 12:07Speaker 3: The very thing that Hosea had hoped to avoid with
- 12:09Speaker 3: his dishonest dealings and foolish allegiances was now a reality. Ultimately,
- 12:16Speaker 3: God gave his children what they wanted, to be just
- 12:18Speaker 3: like the other nations. They exchanged what was truly good,
- 12:22Speaker 3: a covenant relationship with their maker, for a lie. The
- 12:27Speaker 3: lie that they could have a better life apart from
- 12:30Speaker 3: God and his ways. In reality, it's the same lie
- 12:34Speaker 3: that the devil told Adam and Eve in the garden.
- 12:38Speaker 3: Questioning the word of God, and suggesting that God is
- 12:41Speaker 3: holding his perfect good away from his children. But even
- 12:45Speaker 3: in their rejection and in the midst of exile and humiliation,
- 12:50Speaker 3: God never stopped loving his own. He still had a
- 12:54Speaker 3: plan for Israel to one day break the chains, and
- 12:57Speaker 3: not only theirs, but the chains of all the world
- 13:00Speaker 3: and the terrible grip of sin. He would do this
- 13:04Speaker 3: through the Savior Messiah, the Lord Jesus Christ. Dear God,
- 13:08Speaker 3: thank you that The promise is still true that it
- 13:11Speaker 3: is always good to trust in you, to not rely
- 13:15Speaker 3: upon the way of this world, but to always trust
- 13:18Speaker 3: in your ways. Thank you that you never stop loving
- 13:21Speaker 3: us or giving us an opportunity to repent and return
- 13:25Speaker 3: to you. May we never exchange truth for lies. May
- 13:30Speaker 3: we never listen to the enemy, but always listen to you.
- 13:34Speaker 3: In Jesus' name, amen. Thank you for listening to today's
