- 0:07On Sunday, October 9th, 1977, the New York Yankees faced the Kansas City Royals at Royal Stadium for Game 5 of the 1977 ALCS.
- 0:18The series was tied at two games apiece. The Royals had stolen Game 2 in New York, and the Yankees counteracted with a big win in Kansas City facing elimination in Game 4.
- 0:27For this fifth and final game, Royals manager Whitey Herzog sent Game 1 winner Paul Splittorf back to the mound.
- 0:33Billy Martin counteracted with starter Ron Guidry, who was the winning pitcher in Game 2.
- 0:37This audio recording is from the New York WMCA radio broadcast featuring announcers Phil Rizzuto, Frank Messer, Bill White, Mel Allen, and Bert Knapp.
- 0:47WMCA, Real People Radio.
- 0:55The Mel Allen-John Sterling pre-game show is brought to you by Cart Blanche. Since no credit card is accepted everywhere, you should have Cart Blanche.
- 1:04The credit card, you need no matter what other credit card you have. And by Emory, the Air Force and Air Freight.
- 1:15Well, good evening everyone. For those of you who were up at about 11.30 on Friday night, heard me talking to myself here at WMCA and trying to get a clear line through to Miami, Florida where Mel Allen was.
- 1:33We signed off that if the Yankees didn't win tomorrow, Saturday, I told Mel I was seeing all the old familiar places, wherever that is, wherever they are.
- 1:45And he said, yeah, he said that the Yankees are going to have to find the winning recipe in Kansas City so that they had not done with any regularity the past few years.
- 1:59And I allowed as to how I thought that, figure O had a little bit edge of agor and Mel agreed. And anyway, as you know, the Yankees did win and this is it.
- 2:09This is the fifth and final game. It is the same. Two teams in the fifth and final game as last year. History repeats itself last year at Yankee Stadium.
- 2:20Chris Chambliss, homeward in the last of the ninth and the Yankees beat Kansas City. I don't know what's going to happen tonight.
- 2:26Mel, we have a lot of things to talk about. Usually I come in and do these shows with you and I say, you know, we're going to have to analyze.
- 2:32How can you ever analyze? But tonight there really are a lot of things to do. And one thing I'm going to do tonight, which I'll tell you at the very top of the show, is I'm going to second guess.
- 2:44I'm going to have a chance to second guess. I really am. Hey, did we say, let me ask you a question, Miss Engineer. Did we say that the John Sterling Bell Allen pregame show was brought to you by, we did.
- 3:04Okay. So we've taken care of that. And it is 717. I could have answered that question because I was in there involved in reading some news reports about the weather, believe it or not, because I couldn't find anything else to read.
- 3:17And I suddenly heard that and I came running into the studio.
- 3:20I'm glad you did. Tonight it's Paul Splittoff of Kansas City and Ron Guidry for the Yanks. And I guess Mel, that maybe you ought to begin by perhaps allaying some fears of Yankee fans about Guidry, because he's pitching with two days rest.
- 3:41This is not abnormal at all for playoff or World Series competition. You'll be able to perhaps speak a little more since you were on the scene. In some of the instances I'm going to bring about, one occurs in 1957 when Milwaukee Braves were in unknown quantity.
- 4:03And they started three pitchers. But as the series got down, they found that Lou Bredet was pitching best form. So they came to the seventh game and Bredet had pitched the fifth game and shut out the Yankees one to nothing.
- 4:19He had won an earlier game in the series and so they came back with Lou Bredet with two days rest. And I slept outside the stadium. As a matter of fact, to get into the bleachers.
- 4:30I think Bredet did too. Unfortunately, at the time, unfortunately for you, you were broadcasting the game on television. And Bredet finished his shutout again. But the point I'm making is that it's not abnormal and it wasn't in Bredet's case.
- 4:49So he won three games that year. Of course, he wasn't the first pitcher to win three games in a World Series. It hasn't happened too often. I wasn't around this time either, John, just to go back to a previous generation or so.
- 5:04But it just cost my mind, believe it or not, this summer at Cooperstown. I went up to see the induction of the Hall of Famers, one of whom was from my university. He joined the Cleveland Indians in 1920.
- 5:22I'm talking about Joe Sewell. His last three years in the Major League were spent with the Yankees. They traded him over to New York from Cleveland. And the interesting story about that. He was voted in by the Veterans Committee of the Hall of Fame.
- 5:38But a Yankee pitcher named, he was a submarine pitcher, Carl Mays, inadvertently threw a pitch that beamed Cleveland shortstop Ray Chapman and killed him.
- 5:54And of course, that's one of the historic things in baseball. And so they hurriedly called up this young University of Alabama graduate named Joe Sewell, who was getting some minor league experience down in New Orleans, called him up, played shortstop.
- 6:08They won the penalty on a trist speaker. He was the shortstop when Bill Wamsgans made the only unassisted triple play in the history of a World Series.
- 6:17To hear him tell about, he was standing around when that happened. He was in the 1932 World Series of the Yankees when Babe Ruth, allegedly pointed against Charlie Root to the center field, beaches and hit the home run.
- 6:30Although that's rather apocryphal, according to Joe McCarthy, who was managing the Yankees then after having managed the Cubs.
- 6:37He's asking an answer, a question, and he gets way off in the left field, but I'm coming back. Stanley Kovalevsky, anyway, won three games for the Indians in that World Series.
- 6:47I wasn't going to accuse you of being there either.
- 6:49No.
- 6:50It has happened before Harry Burkine did it, of course. But I'm just talking about people coming back with two days of rest.
- 6:56That's done often in a series because you do it within, say, a week. Sometimes you don't have a day off with traveling. Sometimes you do. Speck Shays a rookie started the seventh game in 1947.
- 7:08He volunteered because of the Yankee pitching short, so he didn't last long. But still, he made a third start.
- 7:16In 1965, Sandy Kovacs pitched the last day of the season against Philadelphia in the second game of Doubleheader. The Dodgers didn't want to use them, but they lost the first game.
- 7:27They went a race with the Giants and with the Pirates down the last day of the season. So they had to start Kovacs in the second game of the Doubleheader.
- 7:37Then the first day of the World Series fell on a Jewish holiday, and Kovacs was a very religious person, would not pitch on that Jewish holiday.
- 7:48So they started Drivesdale. For those who are baseball fans, they know this anyway, so we should explain from the non-basable fans,
- 7:55World Series falls with the regularity so that you can, with a day off, a travel pitch, one, four, and seven. You can pitch those games.
- 8:03They came down to the seventh game, and Alston had a decision. Does he pitch a guy named Don Drivesdale with three days rest or Kovacs with two?
- 8:14I was doing a show in Baltimore, Mel, and you know this writer who's rather a surpic individual. I asked him this question. His name is Neil Eskridge, the writer.
- 8:23He said, well, you know, he said about whether or not they're going to pitch Kovacs. He said, you know, the other guy doesn't exactly have a broken arm.
- 8:30But Alston did pitch Kovacs with two days rest rather than Drivesdale and Kovacs went on and beat Minnesota.
- 8:38And that is going to, you're going to love this night, because I was standing on the platform in Baltimore trying to get a train today.
- 8:46You obviously stood in a runway trying to get a plane out of Miami in the ring. And I thought to myself, you know, I haven't second-guessed all year,
- 8:54fans second-guessed all the time, leads to arguments on the talk show. This time tonight, I'm going to second-guess, I'm going to second-guess both managers,
- 9:01because I think they really need second-guessing. Now, we're going to get back with some of Mel's thoughts on the issues I'm going to bring up.
- 9:08Remember the Yanks and Royals, it's the final game of the year for one team. One team is going home losing...
- 9:14It's like a one-game World Series.
- 9:16Absolutely. And boy, let me tell you something, there's much more pressure tonight than there will be in the World Series.
- 9:22Because if you lose this game, no one knows you are there. If you lose the World Series, you get paid very well and you've got that natural national spotlight.
- 9:32And believe me, it's much tougher to lose the championship series than lose the play of the World Series. No one will know you're there.
- 9:38Anyway, it's 24 after 7, we'll be going to Kansas City at 8 o'clock and Mel and I'll be back right after this.
- 9:44Coarse recorder, oxygen masks, you're listening to the sound of one of the world's great air forces.
- 9:52An air force with more planes at its disposal than Russia or even America.
- 9:58Ground equipment, clear.
- 10:00An air force that flies more often and to more places than any airline in the world. It's Emory, the air force in air freight.
- 10:08At Emory, we have more than just a fleet of planes at our command. We have a fleet of airlines where we reserve space on key flights of practically every airline carrying packages.
- 10:18And we use hundreds of offline commuter and charter planes, even planes of our own where airline service is weak.
- 10:24We also have thousands of people, thousands of trucks and hundreds of offices waiting for us on the ground.
- 10:30Control this as TWA 463, ready for takeoff.
- 10:33The next time you have a package to ship, don't just ship it with an air freight company or even a package only airline, ship it with an air force.
- 10:42Emory, the air force in air freight.
- 10:46It's 25 minutes after 7, what am I going to second guess about?
- 10:50Well, you'll find out right after this word about carte blanche from Mel Allen.
- 10:54Friends, the next time you have an appetite for fine French food, go directly to Bea Pierre at Duncoe, Long Island.
- 11:02Right here in the area of New York.
- 11:06And carte blanche it.
- 11:08Bea Pierre is one of many fine restaurants in New York where your carte blanche card will allow you to spoil, indulge and treat yourself to the kind of food nobody can make at home.
- 11:19Dinner somehow always tastes a little better when you have it with style, you know.
- 11:24Not that you don't have it with style at home, but you know how it is when you go out and you're more in style with your carte blanche card because people know carte blanche denotes more than an average measure of distinction and taste.
- 11:38With a carte blanche card, you can travel with style too.
- 11:42You can carte blanche your airline tickets, for example, carte blanche your rented car, carte blanche your hotel bill, and even carte blanche a vacation tour through Cart & Tour's.
- 11:53Keep your carte bill wherever you go, and carte blanche your way through over 250,000 doors all across the country, including Bea Pierre.
- 12:03carte blanche it. You know you're going first class and so will everyone else.
- 12:08Okay, now anyway, I'm standing on this railroad station and waiting for the train to come in.
- 12:13It was raining like crazy in Baltimore as I guess it did just about everywhere else in the east.
- 12:18I thought about the game today, Bell, and I thought about the show that we're going to do, both shows we're going to do.
- 12:22It's kind of exciting. A final game, one game.
- 12:26And here are my second guesses. First, let me second guess why they're Herzog, okay?
- 12:31I got a story to tell you. I can almost read your mind.
- 12:35You see, I can look at you now. Like you said, when you were in New York, Baltimore, and I was in Florida getting each of us getting ready to do football games,
- 12:44it's hard to talk to one another or to anyone in conversation without being able to see each other's faces.
- 12:51But I do have a story to tell you. Go ahead.
- 12:54I'm not going to go into the long traditions or histories of this because everything in baseball is history and tradition.
- 13:01Also, not only do fans second guess as they do on my show all the time, but players second guess their manager.
- 13:07I've never been associated with a manager or coach, including some of the best. Al Arbor and hockey, Gene Shoe and Red Holzman,
- 13:15Kevin Lockery and basketball, Earl Weaver and baseball, down Shule in football without that guy being second guessed by his players behind his back.
- 13:23And, however, I think this is a first guess and not a second guess.
- 13:28Kansas City Royals, Whitey Herzog decided to pitch two left-handers in Yankee Stadium against the Yankees.
- 13:34One of them, Paul Spodoff, pitched great. The other one, Andy Haslop, pitched very, very good.
- 13:39But it isn't that they didn't pitch well. Mel, it's that Dennis Leonard didn't pitch till game three, so he can come back on one day's rest.
- 13:50And he is their number one best pitcher. And the only thing I can think of is Casey Stengel in 1960, and I talked about it Friday night.
- 13:59You remember it. He had it in his mind because Ford had only pitched half a year and he hadn't had his greatest year not to pitch him till the third game in New York,
- 14:09even though Pittsburgh's four of his field was just as big as Yankee Stadium. And it cost him dearly because he had four pitched three and six.
- 14:17And then in the World Series, your top pitcher pitches one, four and seven, your second pitcher, two and five, your next pitcher, three and six.
- 14:25And Stengel's line was, we won't win the seventh game unless they're three days of rain. Of course, they scored nine runs, but lost it 10-9.
- 14:34And I really believe.
- 14:35The year of Manus Rasky.
- 14:36That's right. Here is a blatant second guess. But I really thought at the time that I would have started Dennis Leonard, not that Spodoff didn't pitch well,
- 14:44and not that Haslop didn't pitch well. Gour did not pitch well, and the White pitched him.
- 14:48But just so Leonard could pitch, if you pitch one, you can pitch five. Now, what are your thoughts on that? I'm going to get to Gidry in a moment.
- 14:57Well, quite obviously, everybody's been riding here, and most of us, you and I, in fact, talked about it.
- 15:06Everybody who was able to, particularly the first third of the season, threw left-handers against the Yankees because the Yankees' long ball power was all left-handed.
- 15:20Left-handed hitters, Jackson and Nettles, Chambliss. And of course, while not in the category of a long ball hitter, still a guy that you want to keep off the bases,
- 15:32Mickey Rivers, a left-hand batter, they haven't been able to keep him off the bases too well up until now.
- 15:39But whatever happens tonight is, of course, a different night. But that was the reason most people throw left-handers against the Yankees to neutralize their power.
- 15:53And they have been a team, somewhat like some of the old Yankee teams, who went to the beginnings this year, instead of playing like they did last year.
- 16:03Getting Rivers on, let us say, as an example, sacrificing him or moving him over, playing hit-and-run, stealing the bases, doing everything.
- 16:12For example, Kansas City has been doing this year, utilizing their speed, making contact. And although I don't have my statistics with me for the year,
- 16:26yet the teams were fairly even in total strikeouts. And I was surprised when I happened to check on that since I saw you last.
- 16:36They're not too far off from one another in that department. Yet your long ball hitters do strike out more often than the fellows who are spray hitters,
- 16:45or go for the doubles and triples. And this is something that Kansas City specialized in.
- 16:50But I think that's, Whitey Herzog is a gambler, so is Belly Martin.
- 16:54And Whitey Herzog decided he'd go along with the left-handers who seemed to have done so well against New York, particularly over the first third of the season.
- 17:03It wasn't until after they got Johnson and then started putting Penala in there that they started turning the figures around and began to win against left-handers rather consistently.
- 17:16But I'm sure that's what was in his mind. But I don't know why he hasn't pitched Coburn for now.
- 17:26Well, honestly, I would have pitched a split-off in Leonard in the stadium, but Leonard in game one, he's my best pitcher.
- 17:32And I certainly would have pitched Coburn. Just bring up to mind a great line, get out of the 1960 series, I remember.
- 17:39And you, I know, were there. It was a spring training game in 1961, the Anks and Pirates.
- 17:45And I don't know if it was in Fort Myers or St. Petersburg.
- 17:48But as you remember in the World Series, the Anki started Dittmore twice and he got clubbed.
- 17:52Pirates started Bob Fren twice. He got murdered.
- 17:55And that day they both pitched in this exhibition game after the game, not too well. And Pirates said, I don't know why they keep pitching Dittmore against us.
- 18:03He's, what are they going to learn? He said, then again, when are we going to learn not to pitch a friend against them?
- 18:08I thought of that because Nettles is second guessing Herzog saying, why are they keep pitching Gura against us, you know?
- 18:14Well, last year they knocked Gura out in a couple of ball games in the playoffs. He hasn't had success against them.
- 18:22They keep bringing up the fact he wants revenge against Martin because Martin didn't treat him right.
- 18:27A ball player is a professional. He's out to make a living and this revenge bit to me, I don't go for it in particular.
- 18:35Sure, it could be a little something that might make the adrenaline flow a little bit better.
- 18:40But a man has personal pride in performance. And whether you like a guy, whether you don't like him, you've got to play golf with him.
- 18:49I remember a rizzuto played golf of win one afternoon, which is typical.
- 18:54Let's say the next night, Phil comes up bleeding off and wins first pitch, almost took his head off.
- 18:59Phil said, hey, what's the matter? Well, I can't say over there, but when you yelled at him, but anyway, wound up, we're not playing golf now.
- 19:05The quick story I wanted to tell you, the fellas did color with me on the game Saturday, Miami against Kansas.
- 19:12Instead of paying attention, talking about, you know, before we went on the air getting things ready, you know how you do before you hit the air, especially in the football game.
- 19:22He happened to be a graduate of Kansas. And right next door to us at the Orange Bowl was the staff that broadcast the University of Kansas football games out of Kansas City.
- 19:37And this is a fellow has been broadcasting a few years. It was doing a color with me. He leans out. He knows all the people, you know, from Kansas City.
- 19:50He said, gee, can you beat that? That hurts. I guess because he played with the Yankees started that year just because you want to see the Yankees win.
- 20:01I thought I'd fall out of the booth about the man was, you know, kidding. Honestly, this is exactly what he said.
- 20:07And the answer he got, of course, the fellas sort of agreed with him at, but in the sense of second guessing, Herzog, they didn't go that far as if to say Herzog deliberately did it so the Yankees could win.
- 20:21I just, I looked at him and said, you got to be kidding. He said, no, he said, what other reason could there be for him in starting the Euro?
- 20:29Well, I'll tell you what, if a guy really feels that he has to be put away in a home. I mean, that's, I'd say that's the height of irrational thinking.
- 20:38I just didn't believe it was on my mind for about the whole first half.
- 20:41Now, let me second guess, Billy Martin. First of all, let me get back. You mentioned the thing that's written up in newspapers, but that's a newspaper thing.
- 20:51It's written to fill all, you know, we know this Mel, usually during the season, whether it's hockey, basketball or baseball, not football, since that's once a week, but the other sports.
- 21:01One writer is assigned by the newspaper and he writes a story of the game. It is a game story.
- 21:08Now running.
- 21:09Right. Now, running account.
- 21:11During, during big games, big series or do or in World Series or playoff, they then assign one or two other writers and one covers the other teams clubhouse.
- 21:23The other writes a gossip notes and quotes thing and they have to fill up their columns. That's how these, these are the other stories, the feature stories.
- 21:32One guy does the game story. The other guy does the feature story or two feature stories.
- 21:37And that's a feature story by Gore and Martin. He played it. Well, they've all been around. Everybody's played with everyone else.
- 21:44And if Gura to win the fourth game of a best of five championship series to propel his team into the playoffs needed the revenge motive, then, then he's, he's in a lot of trouble.
- 21:56He's got big, he's got big problems. You go out to win cause you go out to win.
- 22:00And by the way, if Gura was pitching for the WMCA, no star softball team was out of the mound, wouldn't he try to win? We mean he's going to go out there to look lousy.
- 22:08No one ever goes out to embarrass himself.
- 22:10I always put it this way. Take the manager or the coach of a football team or any other sport. Take him alone.
- 22:20He is selfish enough just as you and I want to make a living or anyone listening in. He wants to win.
- 22:26Right.
- 22:27He's going to throw what he thinks is the very best under the circumstances that might help him win. There are certain little refinements that do exist.
- 22:38Now he might not have thrown Gura against a nuthaball club that didn't have the same balance as the Yankees.
- 22:47But against the Yankees, he thought that was his thing. He thought the left hander would be the type of pitcher to throw against him.
- 22:53And I think it's a good second guess and I have. Now, Billy Martin, I haven't second guessed all year long and the answer is not when you second guess a manager or a coach.
- 23:04The answer isn't that they somehow don't even know this or don't want to win as much as you do. The answer lies in simply what they perceive to be the right strategy.
- 23:16I think there's a question I have to ask Mel, which I will. And depending on your answer, we'll find out how good a second guess mine is.
- 23:23But mine is really a first guess. If those who listen to my show avidly will remember that I raised this before the playoff series began.
- 23:31By the way, Pablo Guzman is here tonight. We interrupted his program and he had a question on Mel.
- 23:38They want to answer about who holds the record for home runs. Some guy called him and said my friend wasn't sure if it was the Reds or the Giants.
- 23:46You mean team home run?
- 23:48Team home run. Giants and Reggie to 221. And in what had to be your most fun year, I would think it was your most fun year.
- 23:55Maybe 49 was the most fun year, but 1961 had to be maybe your most fun year, was it?
- 24:00You mean the M&M boys?
- 24:01Yeah, was it? Was that the great year?
- 24:03Remember the play on Broadway, Dial M for Murder? It was a perfect thing for an answer to grab to use as we came with Clashay.
- 24:13Dial M for Murder, Manlyne Maris. No, it wasn't the greatest fun. Of course, I don't want to get into that now because we have other things to talk about.
- 24:26I think 49 had to be because the Yankees were one game behind. Well, in a sense, it's relevant because here they were one game behind Kansas City with two to play.
- 24:41And that was the situation in 1949 for the penalty. Only they were at home and against the Red Sox behind two games, two to go.
- 24:50They were behind 4-0-0 on Saturday, which was Joe DiMaggio's day, I remember, and a little sidebar.
- 24:57His mother was here. He had lost his father. She was wearing black. Playing the Red Sox, Joe McCarthy managing the Red Sox.
- 25:05Dom is in the dugout. I was MCing at home plate. This was not in the script guidelines, so I got an idea and I said, well, if I get fired for this, I'll just get fired for it.
- 25:16It seemed like such a natural. Here is Joe out at home plate to commit and all that. They were going to give his mother flowers.
- 25:23And I just decided what a perfect setup. And I called Joe McCarthy out to home plate. I called Dom DiMaggio out to home plate.
- 25:34They weren't aware of it. Now, what needed all of a sudden, you know, I would wing something, I'd live it.
- 25:39I'm going to make a beautiful picture, a historic picture, actually, and it was as it turned out. Sometimes you do something's right.
- 25:48They were standing there. Joe had played under McCarthy. Here was Dom DiMaggio's brother who had robbed him of many a base hit.
- 25:56They'd fought one another on the field of play. And I called his mother out.
- 26:04I had one of the attendants bring her out to home plate. And Joe always tells this story even to the day.
- 26:10She came up to home plate accompanied by the attendant and then she pulled away from him as she approached home plate and walked right by Joe,
- 26:18whose day it was, and walked over and kissed Dominic. Because she'd already seen Joe, you see, but Joe loves to tell the stories.
- 26:26Here it is my day. Yankee Stadium fell. She walks right by me and hugs Dom. But anyway, the game starts and the Yankees fall behind,
- 26:34four to nothing. They battled back, tied the score at four all.
- 26:38Then Dell hits a homer in the eighth inning. The Yankees win at five-four. They go into Sunday and, of course, they win the ball game.
- 26:45Five to three. Rizzotto got a triple in the first inning. Henrik got him home with a ground ball. And that was the only run.
- 26:53Ellis Kinder pitching against Big Ration to the last of the eighth inning. The Yankees got four and the Red Sox got three in the ninth.
- 27:02But it was a team that just refused to give up. And we did, you and I did talk about this.
- 27:11While the Yankees are thin in pitching, we said, are they going to come back and at least go to the fifth game?
- 27:18If you remember, we said, well, they're a team that does have tradition behind them.
- 27:23Though they, most of them, weren't part of that tradition I speak of. Yet, by being on the team, they naturally are exposed to it
- 27:32and have had it drilled into them by Billy Martin and George Steinbrenner.
- 27:39And I knew that they wouldn't quit and they would try as hard as they could. But here we are on the last day of the regular season
- 27:50because the playoff is part of that. And so it's a similar situation.
- 27:54But do you remember what happened in 1948, just the year before, talking about second guessing?
- 28:01When the Red Sox tied Cleveland on the last day after knocking the Yankees out of the penalty on Saturday, and they had the only playoff in the history of the American League on Monday,
- 28:11and Lou Boudreau starts the left-hander at Fenway Park. Do you remember whom the Red Sox started?
- 28:17I can't. I remember the background after all that. It started with a G.
- 28:21Jenny Galehouse.
- 28:22Jenny Galehouse. And everybody in the world jumped on Joe McCarthy.
- 28:26By the way, in case people are wondering, my Nana told me about that.
- 28:30Jenny Galehouse is an old right-hander, but it worked for Connie Mack with Howard Emke going back when my nanny told me about that one.
- 28:39But that was against the Cubs, I think, in 1929.
- 28:44Actually, Bearden really was probably the great... You know, these stories are remembered by baseball fans.
- 28:50That's why they are recited by Rote, people say to me, too.
- 28:55And we're not talking about Kyle, Rote.
- 28:57I'll walk out of the studio now. I'll walk out now.
- 29:00How do you know that? What a memory it is in that at all. Any great baseball fan, someone who loves baseball, could recite those things.
- 29:05Because Bearden was a rookie and was a left-hander.
- 29:08And with the Yankees.
- 29:09Yes, way back.
- 29:11And when Boudreau made that announcement, the Cleveland Clubhouse, the story goes that he said,
- 29:17if any of you people want to argue with me, looking to his older players, because he had a lot of older players,
- 29:22he was like the same age as his players, Keltoner and Gordon and such, he said,
- 29:27argue with me, is anyone think is wrong to start Bearden, a left-hander in Fenway Park?
- 29:33And they said, hey, you know, you got into the playoff after 154 games, we'll stick with you.
- 29:38Well, Boudreau also had two home runs to help win.
- 29:40Right, and one of them was in a very first inning.
- 29:43Well, it goes along with pitching.
- 29:46You know, again, that was 49, you're talking about 48, nothing has changed.
- 29:50That's why baseball is so great.
- 29:52Here it is 77.
- 29:54It's just the names of change, the same arguments, the same fights, the same jealousies,
- 29:59the same problems, again, paid a lot more money, but the same complaining,
- 30:03the same second guessing behind the manager's back, and it will always go on.
- 30:07And by the way, you know, you talk about 49, Joe McCarthy had managed the Yankees,
- 30:11and it got acrimonious at the very end.
- 30:13You would return from the service and were announced, and again, I don't know if you were there then,
- 30:17were you there when it got very bitter at the very end?
- 30:1946.
- 30:20Okay, and now when he came back a couple years...
- 30:23Larry's failing, he...
- 30:25But when he came back a couple years later in 49, you think he wanted to beat the Yankees?
- 30:28Of course he did.
- 30:30Of course he did. So it hasn't changed anyway.
- 30:32My second guess of Martin and what has to do with tonight's coming up right after this.
- 30:37Have you ever gone to the airport to get your package on a plane?
- 30:41Taxi, the airport, please.
- 30:44I don't know what it is about this cab, but it just refuses to go to the airport at rush hour.
- 30:48Probably afraid of planes.
- 30:50Taxi!
- 30:52When you finally get there, you're almost sorry you did.
- 30:54Could either of you gentlemen tell me where the World International counter is?
- 30:58Sure, it's right over that way.
- 31:00No, Charlie, it's over that way.
- 31:02And when you get to where you're going, you have to be lucky to get your package to where it's going.
- 31:06Hi, I'd like to get this package on your next plane to Fargo, North Dakota, please.
- 31:10Why are you shaking your head?
- 31:12See that plane taking off?
- 31:14Yeah.
- 31:15That was our next plane to Fargo, North Dakota.
- 31:17There's an easier way. Call Emory.
- 31:20We'll pick your package up and rush it to the airport.
- 31:23And instead of your package waiting for a plane, chances are you'll find a plane waiting for your package.
- 31:28You'll also find that Emory goes to more places both here and abroad than any other air freight company.
- 31:33Hello, Emory. Help!
- 31:36Emory, the Air Force in Air Freight.
- 31:3915 minutes before 8 and we'll get back up right after this word for Carp Walsh from Mel Allen.
- 31:49By the way, friends, next time you have an appetite for anything in the eating line and flying around and about,
- 32:01sometimes you don't always eat on schedule.
- 32:03And so John and I both have been traveling and we haven't had our dinner and I'm sure you're not concerned about that.
- 32:09I hope you enjoyed. Yours will have ours in a little while.
- 32:11But next time you have an appetite for fine-selling food, go directly to Horn of Plenty at 91 Charles Street in New York and Cart Blanchett.
- 32:21Horn of Plenty is one of many fine restaurants in New York where your Cart Blanch card will allow you to spoil and dodge
- 32:29and treat yourself to the kind of food nobody can make at home.
- 32:33Oh, I know some of you say I can cook better at home than some of these restaurants.
- 32:37Probably certain dishes, as they say, is nothing like home cooking, but it's nice to get out once in a while,
- 32:44especially to a very nice place like Horn of Plenty.
- 32:47Dinner somewhere always tastes a little bit better when you eat out every now and then,
- 32:52especially when you have it with style with your Cart Blanch card because people know Cart Blanch denotes more than an average measure of distinction and taste.
- 33:01With a Cart Blanch card, you can travel with style, too.
- 33:04You can Cart Blanch your airline tickets, your rented car, your hotel bill, and even Cart Blanch a vacation tour through Cartan Tours.
- 33:13So keep your card with you wherever you go and Cart Blanch your way through over 250,000 doors across the country,
- 33:20including Horn of Plenty, that good old Southern cookin'.
- 33:24Cart Blanch it! You'll know you're going first class and so will everyone else.
- 33:28Now, before the playoff series began, and Martin announced that Gullit and Gidry would be his first two pitches in that automail,
- 33:38we talked about it on the show, the talk show with some of the callers, and I made this point,
- 33:44and so that's why I don't think it's really a second guess. I think this really is a first guess.
- 33:48I said the only reason that you should start Gullit is that you want him to pitch two games, Game 1 and Game 5,
- 33:57because the Game 1 pitcher in a 3 out of 5 series with no day off is the only pitcher who's able to come back with his normal allotment of rest,
- 34:05and Gullit has had arm trouble every year he's been in the big leagues since 1970 with the Reds,
- 34:10when he broken his an 18-year-old, and he's had serious arm trouble during the year.
- 34:16And Gidry, I felt, was the number one pitcher, although Gullit had been down the stretch and was pitching great in September,
- 34:22which probably influenced Martin more than anything else. Your best pitcher, Gullit, let him get you out to 1-0 lead, then come back with Gidry.
- 34:29But I have to admit, I'll second guess, because I think Gidry was the number one pitcher during the year,
- 34:35and I don't know if Gullit could have come back even with three days rest, such were the problems that he had with his arm,
- 34:41and anyway, it's gotten to the point now where Gidry pitched as well as he did, and by the way, I think there's more pressure on Game 2 pitcher if you don't win Game 1.
- 34:49Sure there is.
- 34:50Now, now, if you want to talk pressure, this is the season in one game and you pitch Gidry,
- 34:57and I think that's a worthwhile second guess. What I'm saying is that they should have started Gidry in the first game so they'd have him rested for Game 5.
- 35:05Well, after you had said that, I thought about that for a little while. As a matter of fact, on my way home, and by the time, long before I'd gotten home,
- 35:15I certainly came around to your way of thinking. Gidry had been physically sound all year, and Gullit had not, and as you just pointed out,
- 35:27he's had a history of getting hurt, and we never know how deeply a fellow may be injured, the extent of his injury, or his ailment.
- 35:39All of a sudden, we thought that Hunter was going to be completely out of the picture, but here he is suddenly warming up a little bit,
- 35:45and then we got another report on what the trouble with him actually was. It was a different report than the original one.
- 35:52So, you know what managers and coaches do? They sometimes try to play, either play down or play up an injury to get the psychological edge on somebody else,
- 36:02and even being with a ball club, you sometimes would be given sort of a wrong answer and a matter of degree.
- 36:08But, didn't Gullit start for Cincinnati in 75? I believe he started a second game, didn't he? First or second game, but I could check that in a hurry.
- 36:21But in any case, I agree with you. Picture sound this picture first, in case you have to keep coming back with him, and certainly when you add to the physical soundness,
- 36:34the fact that he has become your best picture.
- 36:37Okay, that's really what I'm saying. Really what I'm saying is, Herzog should have started with Leonard in game one so he could have pitched him twice,
- 36:45and the same goes for Billy Martin and Ron Guidry. And by the way, here's nothing to contemplate if you will.
- 36:53You know, a lot has been made in the newspapers that New York has lost Tom Siever and Joe Namath and Julia Serving and now Walt Frazier.
- 37:05But, you know, the names remain the same, but the abilities change, Mel.
- 37:10And at the beginning of this year, if I had said to you, or anyone else, any baseball fan, you, Bob Fischel, Marty Appel, anyone we know, okay, Joe Reichler, anyone we know, okay,
- 37:25it's six months from now, it's game five in Kansas City. Who's going to be your picture? Someone has said Hunter, Hulsman, Doc Ellis, Figueroa, Don Gullit,
- 37:39and then after the deal was made, Mike Torres. And the picture is Ron Guidry. A couple years ago, Catfish signed that contract,
- 37:50and he was interviewed by everyone in the world. I mean, there wasn't anyone who didn't interview him, including Network News commentators and Network News anchorman, okay.
- 38:05And he was the Catfish, and now he's another guy. And that's how people are in life. People don't recognize.
- 38:12Just another guy shagging flies, pepper, playing pepper, shagging flies during batting practice, and Ron Guidry, people would have known Ron Guidry from that wall over there, and he is the...
- 38:23Except his parents and relatives.
- 38:24And he is the last game pitcher, and that's some honor. That is an unbelievable honor. One thing we said Friday, he worked.
- 38:32You know, we said that there's the terrible cliché, there's no tomorrow. You've got to bring all your people in. Tidra will come in early. Lyle will come in early.
- 38:41And Billy Martin did that, and Lyle came through the... I did not see the game, I won't lie about it. I was doing a football game, but he had a bit of a fag with this game.
- 38:49He did. My game happened to be Saturday night, so I watched the game. He pitched one of his... It was one of his strongest efforts.
- 38:57He went over five innings, I think five and two-thirds innings, and his control was excellent. And of course, his big pitch is that slider.
- 39:09It's one of those situations. You can know what's coming, whether it be baseball or football or whatever. So long as you execute your play, perfectly, there's nothing much the other team can do about it.
- 39:19And he was throwing his pitches where he wanted. Great location. The ball was snapping off, and when he threw his fastball, he had that extra on it.
- 39:29And everything was just great, but you've seen Lyle here and there. Any great pitcher, have a day when nothing works. The ball flattens out. It doesn't move.
- 39:38And this is the chance you take.
- 39:41Sure. And a lot of people going into tonight's game who worry about the acts, I don't know who's going to win, and there isn't anyone in the world who knows who's going to win, including people like Billy Martin and Whitey Herzog.
- 39:54They hope for the best. Gidry may go out and pitch fabulously. He may not. The same is true of Splitoff. One thing, though, that I kind of laugh a little about, because there hasn't been this kind of a game in the series.
- 40:06There hasn't been a 10-9 game where eight pitchers are used. A lot of people say, well, but Kansas City will have in the bullpen and ready to go. Jim Colborne, Marty Patton, Steve Mngoury, Markle-Tale, Doug Byrd.
- 40:19Well, they fortified their chances with all those pitches, but it won't help them because this series has proved that if your starting pitcher doesn't do it, it doesn't matter who you bring in.
- 40:31Yesterday was a good example. Marty Patton pitched well, but the game was already gone by the time Goury came in, and the same goes for Lyle the other night. The game was out of Torres hands by the time that Lyle came in, et cetera.
- 40:44Well, we'll get some final thoughts on this when we return to our...
- 40:50Just before you do that, I remember Gullet started his first game last year. Here I'm trying to think of two years ago. He started opener last year and the second game here before last.
- 40:58Go ahead. I just want to get it straight.
- 41:02Yeah, but he's never come back. And remember in the series a couple of years ago, and they had all the rain, and Anderson kept saying, well, I don't think I'll bring him back. I don't want to hurt his career.
- 41:12And what he was really saying was that he doesn't have the kind of arm that comes back that responds. And does Gidry? No one knows because he's never pitched for two days' rest before.
- 41:22In fact, most times he's pitched with four days' rest, but he only has to pitch well for five innings or so. And you know that Lyle and Tidjo and Torres will come in.
- 41:31So the Yankees have four pretty good pitchers tonight. And Kansas City has six, seven good pitches, but if Spodoff doesn't do the job, even a three-to-one lead could be enough for the Yankees to have and to win this game.
- 41:46And of course, the winner goes to the World Series.
- 41:48In case anybody comes out about a space, John, got it open last year for Cincinnati against New York. We'll get back with more right after this.
- 41:57Herman, go to sleep. It's late.
- 42:00I can't.
- 42:01It's two o'clock in the morning. Your factory in Fresno should have just received that package you sent, that package that was holding up a production line of who knows how many people costing you who knows how much money. So you can't sleep.
- 42:14I wonder if they got it.
- 42:15Got what, Herman? Who are you talking to at two o'clock in the morning?
- 42:19Nothing. Forget it.
- 42:21And when you try to count sheep, you wind up counting dollars and cents instead.
- 42:25Maybe I should call them.
- 42:26Maybe you should call them, Herman, but call them in the other room.
- 42:30So you decide to call your air freight company just for a little assurance. But nobody's home. Maybe you've got the wrong number or maybe what's worse, you've got the wrong air freight company because at Emory air freight, no matter what hour of the day or night you call us, we'll not only answer the phone, we'll answer your questions.
- 42:49So the next time you want an air freight company that's in when you call, call us in the first place. Emory, the Air Force in Air Freight.

Valarie is one of the many fine restaurants in New York where your car Blanche card will allow you to spoil, indulge and treat yourself to the kind of food that nobody can make at home.
- 44:12Dinner always tastes a little bit better when you have it with style with your car Blanche card because people know that car Blanche denotes more than an average measure of distinction and taste.
- 44:21With a car Blanche card, you can travel with style too. You can cart Blanche your airline tickets and cart Blanche your rented car. Car Blanche your hotel bill.
- 44:29Even cart Blanche your vacation tour through cartin tours. Keep your card with you wherever you go and cart Blanche your way through over 250,000 doors across the country including Valarie.
- 44:41Car Blanche, you'll know you're going first class and so will everyone else. Well Mel Allen, will they be champions when we get back on the air or will there be more bitter problems in a very, very unpleasant finish to a weird season?
- 44:56I just hope that the guys get out there and play baseball. Don't fight and they both have covered themselves with enough glory.
- 45:06We'll see you right after the game when we find out whether the Yanks are going on to the World Series or to a divorce court and we'll see you then.
- 45:14The Mel Allen John Sterling pregame show is brought to you by Cart Blanche. Since no credit card is accepted everywhere, you should have Cart Blanche.
- 45:23The credit card, you need no matter what other credit card you have and by Emery, the Air Force and Air Freight.

- 47:54My guest tonight on the New York Yankee pregame show is a man who has appeared now in six championship series, four World Series Yankee outfielder Paul Blair and Paul before we go any further I make note of the fact that you are starting tonight out in right field.
- 48:12Yes, I am Frank. It's a surprise to me and you know I just hope I can do the job tonight and help us win a ball game.
- 48:19Paul Blair, let's talk about the first four games of this series. They've all donated Kansas City one and the Yankees then Kansas City then the Yankees.
- 48:27So, so far in the two years of playoffs between the Yankees and Kansas City Royals no team has won two games in a row.
- 48:35Well, that's you know something I've never even paid any attention to but so far this series it seems to me like we have won the games that we had to win.
- 48:44That second game in New York we had to win yesterday and you know I like to think to hear again we have to win and I think we're going to go out and do the job because everybody knows what's at stake.
- 48:54You know there's no more tomorrow so I think everybody's ready and I hope we can put together a real consistent ball game today and win this thing and go into the World Series.
- 49:02Paul Blair, what about the first four games? Any pivotal plays in the games, the Yankees have won? Anything that's any one or two things that have happened to sort of turn this club around?
- 49:11Well, I would like to think that the incident with Hal McCrae and Willie Randolph kind of lit a fire in us and I noticed after he did that to Willie the team got a little more inspiration.
- 49:23They got a little bitter about you know the chief shot that he did take. You know I don't mind good hard aggressive plan but that was a chief shot because you know he threw a body block at Willie and you know you can slide hard without trying to hurt somebody as you know McCrae did.
- 49:37But I think that lit a fire in us and you know now we're back here and we want to win just to show them that we are a better ball club.
- 49:44My guest on the Yankee Pre Game Show tonight is outfielder Paul Blair starting tonight in right field in place of Reggie Jackson and I'll be back with Paul in just two minutes.
- 49:52Say you important beer drinkers, if you've tried spot and beer and liked it we've still got another great taste experience for you.
- 49:59Every year during the last week of September the Lord Mayor of Munich, Germany walks over to a certain keg of beer in Tampson.
- 50:05When he drinks the first glass that's the signal Munich's famous Oktoberfest has begun.
- 50:10You know what that first keg of beer Tampson is? Spot and Oktoberfest beer. That's right.
- 50:14It's specially brewed in March. Soak and age properly and be ready for the wonderful fall festival held in the city so famous for beer.
- 50:21Spot and Oktoberfest. What a celebration and great beer taste.
- 50:25Spot and the original Oktoberfest beer is between light and dark in color with a delightful aroma of malt and hops.
- 50:32This crisp brown brew has a taste so right for the autumn season.
- 50:36Spot and quality you can trust in 1397.
- 50:40Spot and probably the world's most expensive beer to brew.
- 50:44Spot and Oktoberfest. Imported for your pleasure every fall by SEAB Distributors Brooklyn, New York.
- 50:50It's that time of year again. Time to see and compare all the new 78 cars and Pontiac is ready with the finest lineup in their history.
- 50:58No wonder they're calling 78 their best year yet. Your Pontiac dealer has a real winner in every size from the sporty subcompact sunbird all the way up to the super luxurious Bonneville.
- 51:08The biggest news is the new mid-sized Pontiacs, Grand Prix and Le Mans. Both these long time superstars have been completely redesigned for today's driving.
- 51:16They're trimmer than last year but there's more headroom, legroom and usable trunk space.
- 51:21And for sheer looks inside and out, Grand Prix and Le Mans live up to their legendary reputations.
- 51:26So stop in at your Pontiac dealer and let him show you the newest looks on the road. It's his best year yet and he wants to deal.
- 51:34Remember if you haven't talked to your Pontiac dealer, you haven't shopped for a car.
- 51:39Bob Blair would seem to me that the Yankee right hand hitters have been carrying the ball club in the games.
- 51:45They have won Thurman Munson with some key RBIs and from the lower part of the batting order, Bucky Nett and Willie Randolph not to leave out Cliff Johnson and Lupinella.
- 51:55Well this is the thing, because they've thrown and this will be the fourth left hand in this whole series and if the right hand hitters didn't come through we would have been in a lot of trouble.
- 52:03Because it is a little tougher for a left hand to hit a right hand pitcher even though Chris and Nettles they did it all year.
- 52:08But you know in a situation like this I'm sure that they're trying, this is hard, maybe as hard as anybody else.
- 52:13Even Nettles have came through with a couple of key base hits to help us win ball games.
- 52:18But right now if the right hand didn't come through we were going to be in a lot of trouble but we still need those left handed bats. We need that power.
- 52:25And right now if Mickey, you know when he gets thrown I think the club really goes and both games we won.
- 52:32He's been a pivotal part and as long as he does his job and the rest of us can chip in a little bit here and there I think we can beat this ball club.
- 52:40Alright Paul Blair what about the pitching tonight? Paul split off a left hander making his second start of the series against the Yankees.
- 52:46He won the first game and he's sort of been a jinx pitcher against the Yankees.
- 52:50Well that's been true too but here again I think we might can overcome this today because we're going to put a couple more right handers in there.
- 52:58So far in my career I've hit a split off pretty well. I'm not saying that I'll hit him tonight but I will be swinging at him.
- 53:04I just hope to think if we don't make mistakes I think we can beat this ball club.
- 53:08If we can play good sound defense I think we'll beat him easy because so far the two games that they won we made little mental mistakes
- 53:15and a couple errors that threw us right out of the ball game and if we don't do that I think we'll beat him.
- 53:21Alright let's look at the Yankee pitcher Ron Gittery's coming back up to two days rest pitching an excellent ball game to win game number two of this series.
- 53:28Well I think Gittery even though it's just two days rest he's going to be pumped up.
- 53:32You know it's time for him. You know you hate to say he's going out for personal glory but I don't think this is the thing.
- 53:38I think that he knows the job he has to do and he's got so much confidence in himself and I think this year has really proven and made Ron Gittery
- 53:46an established pitcher on this ball club and he feels that he can win and he's confident he can win and I think he's going to do the job regardless of the two days rest.
- 53:54I think that emotions may run a little bit higher with a youngster like Gittery out there on the mound.
- 53:59He's 27 years old but you almost think of him as a rookie. He is not but this is the first big year he's had.
- 54:04How much will emotions play in the ball game tonight?
- 54:07Well if it doesn't get carried too far I think emotions are going to be a big factor in this.
- 54:12Whoever is going to want it the most and I think right now this ball club really wants it the most.
- 54:17I'm sure Gittery wants it because it will really establish himself as a clutch pitcher and this is what everybody wants to feel.
- 54:23They can do the job in the clutch and Gittery is going to be out there and I'm sure he's going to be pumped up and I'm sure everybody else on the ball club is going to be pumped up.
- 54:31I do believe we're going to give them a good game. I certainly hope we run them out of the ball park and don't give them any kind of shot but it will probably be a tight game but I think we're going to win it.
- 54:39And if everybody on the ball club feels the way Paul Blair does I'm sure the Yankees will win it.
- 54:44For appearing as a guest on our pregame show Paul you'll receive Son of a Gun, Clare Aul's new 1200 watt prototype lightweight hair dryer.

- 55:34There is a law on the books in Nassau County. It requires perishable items on supermarket shelves be clearly marked with an expiration date beyond which that item cannot be sold.
- 55:45It is the law and violators are subject to stiff fines.
- 55:49The man who made that law a reality is Hempstead Town Supervisor Al D'Amato.
- 55:54The computer price code in supermarkets was confusing and misleading so D'Amato sponsored legislation which requires a legible price on each item.
- 56:03Consumers have a right to know what the price is. That's why Supervisor D'Amato wrote that law.
- 56:08D'Amato along with Councilman Gene Weisbren, Jim Bennett and Marty Bernstein are working together for consumers and the residents of Hempstead Town.
- 56:16Both to make Al D'Amato presiding supervisor. Then both the entire D'Amato Bennett team on election day.

- 1:00:08Sure, that's the Bill White system. Everybody knows I'm crazy about Butterfingers. All those crispy layers of peanut butter, crunchy candy, chocolatey coating.

- 1:01:03The New York Yankee batting order, Nicky Rivers will lead off and play center field, Willie Randolph will be at second base in bat second, seven months in catches and hits third, Lou Panella will be the clean up header and play left field, Cliff Johnson the designated header will bat fifth,
- 1:01:19Greg Metals will be at third base in bat sixth, Chris Chambliss at first base batting seventh, in right field and batting eighth, Paul Blair and at shot stop batting ninth, Bucky Dent, pitching for the Yankees, Ron Guidry, one and oh in the championship series, 16 and seven on the regular season.
- 1:01:38For the Kansas City Royals, Fred Pontek will be in the lead off spot at shot stop, Hal McCray will play left field in bat second, George Brett at third base hitting third, Al Cowins is the clean up header playing right field, batting fifth and playing center field, Amos Otis, John Wathen will be at first base and bat sixth, the designated header batting seventh, Cookie Rojas,
- 1:02:03batting eighth and catching, Darrell Porter and at second base batting ninth, Frank White. The Royals have only two left hand hitters in the lineup, George Brett at third base and Darrell Porter the catcher.
- 1:02:16The surprises of course, Paul Blair in right field in place of Reggie Jackson who will not start tonight's ball game. And for the Royals the big surprise, the designated hitter, the veteran Cookie Rojas who may be playing his last game as a baseball player.
- 1:02:34Mickey Rivers is set to lead off against Paul Splitar. Splitar on the year one sixteen and lost six, Dar left hand, rid of a wind up and here we go, the first pitch of the ball game is bounced foul past third base coach Dick Hauser.
- 1:02:48No balls and a strike on Mickey Rivers as he tried to slap the ball past the third baseman, George Brett and slapped it foul.
- 1:02:55Pontiac and White at shot and second play him straight up the middle, the outfield is spread out shadow and left, the wind to kick the pitch he bumps out at misses, the drippers strike two.
- 1:03:06Mickey Drive the running bump did not make contact, no balls and two strikes.
- 1:03:12The left field of the Royals is Hal McCray, the center fielder Amosotus and the right fielder Al Collins. John Wathen replacing John Mayberry as the first baseman.
- 1:03:22Darrell Porter gives Split off the side, the left hand a rocks over the slab, kicks and deals, Rivers takes high and tight, one ball two strikes.
- 1:03:30Rivers in the playoffs has seven hits at eighteen at bats, one run batted in.
- 1:03:36Left hand hitter moves up toward the front part of the batter's box, the wind up by Split off the one two pitch, he swings and misses.
- 1:03:44What a blue run by him and there's one away. And now Woody Randolph, the Yankee second baseman.
- 1:03:55Randolph a right hand hitter, four for fifteen in the series with one run batted in.
- 1:04:05Woody straight away in the batter's box and Split off's first pitch to him, breaking ball misses.
- 1:04:11Again Pottack and White are straight up the middle, the outfield is spread with the left fielder McCray, shaded a couple of steps more towards center than he was for Mickey Rivers.
- 1:04:20Brett is backed off at third, the pitch coming, taken for a strike over the inside corner one and one.
- 1:04:27Thurman Munson is the on deck hitter and this is it, this game winds up the regular season of 1977.
- 1:04:34From here it's either next year or the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. One one delivery, foul back and out of play on the right side into the crowd and talk about a crowd.
- 1:04:46This appears to be the largest crowd of the three games out here in Kansas City. Not a vacant seat anywhere in this ballpark.
- 1:04:56It's been a beautiful day in KC, the night is no different, one two pitch, breaking ball a bit low, Porter thought that might have been a strike.
- 1:05:04Two balls and two strikes on Woody Randolph. Split off rocks back, two two delivery, bouncing ball towards short, Pottack has it, the throw to first base in time.
- 1:05:19Randolph is out two down. Now Yankee catcher and captain Thurman Munson. Munson has had a good playoff series, five hits in 16 drips and four runs butted in.
- 1:05:34One of Munson's five hits, a two run homer. Accounting for the Yankees only runs in the opening game of the championship series.
- 1:05:45Well the pattern held last year and so far this year, neither of these teams has ever won two games in a row in the championship series.
- 1:05:53The Yankees will have to break that pattern tonight if they want to win the penalty.
- 1:05:58Thurman Munson on the season batted three oh eight, drove in a hundred runs. The pitch swung on and fouled over toward the Yankee dugout off the hand of Billy Martin on the top steps.
- 1:06:07He knocks it down, picks it up, crosses it over the dugout roof to a youngster. No balls and a strike on Thurman Munson.
- 1:06:15Lou Penella is on deck. The umpires tonight, Nick Bremigan calling balls and strikes. Bill Deegan at first base, Jerry Newdecker at second, Marty Springstead at third.
- 1:06:26The oh and one pitch to Munson. Get on the ground to deep short. Pottec back ends at long draw to first base and he's out at first base. An excellent play by Pottec. A good strong throw by the five foot four inch shot stop.
- 1:06:40And the Yankees are required in order. At the end of one half inning, the Yankees nothing under Royals are coming to back.
- 1:06:45Using a time you knew you who you who chocolate drink yourself a favor and try the super flavor of America's David and chocolate drink. It's got real goodness, protein goodness and refreshing taste.

- 1:07:33Isn't it time you knew you who America's favorite chocolate drink. It's Yogi Beres favorite to you who chocolate drink the action drink for action people you who is another fine product of Iroquois brand.
- 1:07:47Ripple helps you do it better do it better with the Ripple. Ripple has it all all the wall coverings hardware plumbing and paint all the linens and carpeting all the power tools building materials and accessories you need to do it yourself.
- 1:08:04All the energy savers to lower your home fuel bills come in to Ripple for quality value and selection they have it all.
- 1:08:11Ripple helps you do it better do it better with the Ripple.
- 1:08:21Now we go to the bottom half of the first inning and the question how well will Ron Goodry pitch in this ballgame.
- 1:08:27Today is rest from his last start. Ronnie is making his second start of the ALCS. He started the second game in New York and beat Andy Hasler 62. Goodry won nine innings in the ballgame gave up only three hits.
- 1:08:41A double the pot back singles to George Brett and Frank White. He walked three men and he struck out seven over the course of the season. Goodry won 16 and lost seven with an end run average of 2.82.
- 1:08:53Fred Patek leads off the Royals leading hitter in championship play and he hits the first pitch on the ground as short bucking net is up with it goes down to first base and Patek is out one away.
- 1:09:04And that is what Goodry needs in this ballgame. A lot of first ball hitting by the Royals to save the arm. Get as much out of it as possible.
- 1:09:15How McCrae the batter the left fielder for the Royals. The right hand hitter as was project McCrae is five for 14 with two runs batted in in the series.
- 1:09:28Goodry Wines slender youngster deals a strike letter high McCrae spins around it looks at playing umpire Nick Brumigan patrolling left field on the foul lines Russ gets and Jim McKean is the umpire out in right field.
- 1:09:44Goodry pops high kicks and deals in the dirt dug up by Munson one and one Yankees have Lou Penella in left field Mickey Rivers and center Paul Blair replacing Reggie Jackson in right.
- 1:09:57The story on that when we get a chance now the one one pitch with one out it is low ball to on the infield Greg nettles who played must have yesterday's ball game with a spell of dizziness after a collision at second base in the first inning.
- 1:10:13To one deal foul back got him in on the hands a good pitch from Goodry to and to lucky dad as it shuts off Willie Randolph is at second and Chris Chambliss at first German Munson catching.
- 1:10:27Two balls two strikes on right hand hitting McCrae George Brett is on deck. Goodry has the sign the wind up for the two to pitch at its foul back on the screen.
- 1:10:37Paul Blair in right field in place of Reggie Jackson for two reasons tonight. One the Kansas City Royals pitcher Paul Split off Reggie Jackson two for 15 against Paul Split off.
- 1:10:49The other reason defense Reggie having trouble defensively on the artificial surface to two pitch high. It is three and two on Hal McRae.
- 1:11:02That and Randolph playing up the middle metals is back down very deep at third base the outfield with rivers shaded toward right three to delivery powled out of play on the right side headed toward the upper deck.
- 1:11:14McCrae can hit it always he can pull the ball down the left field line he can punch the ball down the right field line with power. He had two ninety eight over the regular season twenty one homers ninety two runs better than fifty four to base it.
- 1:11:32Goodry kicks and offers McCrae fouls another one back in the crowd on the right side. We mentioned a beautiful day here in Kansas City bright sunshine not a cloud in the sky as the game started tonight the temperature was 60 degrees.
- 1:11:46The wind is out of the south at twelve miles per hour slanting toward the left field corner. It could be strong enough to be a factor in the ball game three and two pitch again to McCrae.
- 1:11:56Here it is at another foul out of play on the right side. All is back in the upper deck.
- 1:12:07Ron Goodry finished off the regular season winning eight of his last nine games. He lost his final start. The pitch line and played on a hop by Bucky that drove the first base is not in time.
- 1:12:22Now McCrae beats out an infield hit digging hard down the line. Now the Royals have their most aggressive base runner on at first base.
- 1:12:33McCrae involved in two incidents at second base one in which he knocked the ball out of the hands of shot stop Bucky that the other in which he put a rolling block on second baseman Willie Randolph both players protested by the Yankees to no avail McCrae is aboard Brett the batter the third
- 1:12:53baseman is five for seven in the series with a run batted in red hit three twelve twenty two homers eighty eight ribbies over the season left hand hitter deep in the batter's box feet fairly close together.
- 1:13:07Rivers is shortened up in straightaway center the pitch swung on and fouled off months and shin guards.
- 1:13:15Lou Pinella kicking around something out there in the artificial turf and left Lou pretty much straightaway and so is right fielder Paul Blair.
- 1:13:25Brett looks down a third base coach. Chuckler for a sign Steve Borel's coaches down at first base for the Royals. Chambliss holding McCrae on the look over there by Gidry and the old one pitch fast ball is low and the counters one and one to George Brett one ball one strike one out.
- 1:13:50Gidry comes back the pitch bouncing ball.
- 1:14:00The foul ball foul ball just foul signal given immediately by Bill Deegan the first base umpire no argument from coach Steve Borel George Brett little discredited very very close. Chambliss could not get to it. The ball was just foul by inches.
- 1:14:22Brett will come back and pick up a one ball two strike not the undecadre Al Collins.
- 1:14:35The Royals won the first game of the series seven to two the Yankees came back to win the second six to two the Royals won the third game six to two and the Yankees won yesterday six to four.
- 1:14:45So now we're down to the fifth and final game and everything rests on the outcome of this one the pitch to Brett. Just this must have been low months and held it there for a second look by played on by our Brennan and its two balls and two strikes.
- 1:15:04The ball is passed to the ball and he walks off a short lead at first now stretches it out a bit both people in the dirt part of the sliding bit at first to to the Brett lined up to a right center field.
- 1:15:17Mickey Rivers is after it can he get it and he cannot the ball is passed him all the way to the wall and one will score. The play is around 30 he's coming home.
- 1:15:24He's on his way to third Randolph's relay he's safe at third base George Brett and Greg Nettles got a fight at third Ron Getery is it on the fight. So is Chuck Hiller both benches empty.
- 1:15:35Everybody is on the field. Brett and Nettles Brett went in hard to nettles both bullpen crews are charging in the benches have emptied on May Lee down around third base.
- 1:15:45Now it has to all intents and purposes been broken up. And now the peacemaker Cliff Johnson the last man to go out from the Yankee bench.
- 1:15:55He is the man that could go out there and break it up single handedly cooler heads prevail and they get Ron Getery away from the gray Darrell Porter is being led away.
- 1:16:06Ron Getery had jumped right in and you don't want to see that happen. Your pitcher your number one pitcher must not be injured in something like this.
- 1:16:19The umpires are restoring order.
- 1:16:22Ron has scored Brett was safe at third base and what after Nettles he went in hard. He hit metals the punches started flying. And now cooler heads have prevailed Billy Martin in conference with one of the umpires.
- 1:16:46And now the players are being separated.
- 1:16:59Still a big huddle with the managers. Whitey hers off.
- 1:17:04The umpires all six umpires.
- 1:17:08Restoring order.
- 1:17:12And now the bullpen crews are back in the air.
- 1:17:17And we have had the first battle in American League championship play.
- 1:17:33The Yankee bench man walk back toward the Yankee dugout.
- 1:17:43Brett will be stationed at third.
- 1:17:48Lou Penella the Yankee left fielder now complaining about something to one of the umpires.
- 1:17:54Penella is told to get back into left field a free base hit for George Bratt a run driven in the Royals lead one to nothing.
- 1:18:04Brett drilled the ball to right center field. Mickey Rivers going to his left made a bid for the ball went over his head into the wall.
- 1:18:11Order has been restored. We'll pause right now for station identification on the New York Yankee home of champions radio network WMCA Strauss communications in New York.
- 1:18:22This is Mel Allen. If you think a Reggie Jackson home run travels far.
- 1:18:27Emery travels over 250,000 miles a day.
- 1:18:31Emery the Air Force and Air freight.
- 1:18:40Good read taking a few warm up throws now as Al Collins will step in bread at third only one out and one runners home for Kansas City. The Royals are leading by a score of one to nothing.
- 1:18:56George Brad went in hard to nettles.
- 1:19:11Right hand running right fielding. Collins is three for 15 with three runs better than in the series. The Yankees will pull the infield in and Collins wants the baseball exam and before he steps into the batter's box.
- 1:19:23Prennigin takes a look at it gives it back to Munson.
- 1:19:26Munson sends it back to Goodread.
- 1:19:28The outfield spreads out on Collins. Penella deep and left. The infield is in tight. Nettles is the deep man on the infield.
- 1:19:38Goodread will work from the stretch and set position. The left handers pitch breaking ball for a strike.
- 1:19:46No balls in the strike on Al Collins.
- 1:19:50Amos Otis is on deck.
- 1:19:59Collins over the course of the season hit 3 12. 23 runs better than or 23 homers. 112 RBS. He swings and he misses for strike two. No balls and two strikes.
- 1:20:21Goodread bends for the sign. Collins has stepped out. Time is being no point.
- 1:20:26Chuck Miller the third base coach has simply decided George breath the running and the own two picks bouncing ball to Nettles.
- 1:20:34The run will score. Nettles filled a first in time. Collins is out. Brett scores and the Royals lead to nothing.
- 1:20:41Five shuffle off the carpet. No chance for Nettles to make the play at the plate. The only play had was first base and it was close over there.
- 1:20:49So on RBI for Collins his fourth of the series. There are two outs. Nobody on the batter Amos Otis.
- 1:21:02Otis the center fielder right hand.
- 1:21:07He is one for 13 in the series that one base hit a two run pinch hit.
- 1:21:15The average 15 home runs 71 runs but it in and 29 stolen bases in eight seasons as a Royale.
- 1:21:24At an off year this season for average batting 251 he did hit 17 home runs and drove in 78 runs.
- 1:21:34Back off the outfield is bunched the pitch he wants foul off the third base side.
- 1:21:42Mala plays the alley in left center ball Blair in right center giving both foul lines to Amos Otis.
- 1:21:50Lucky Dan shades him over in the hole at shortstop while he ran off a couple of steps toward second base.
- 1:21:55Nettles is deep but not guarding the line. Jambles backed off and wide at first.
- 1:22:02Now Nettles takes a step toward the foul line as Goodry waits for Otis to step in.
- 1:22:08He's better John Waffin.
- 1:22:13There's the line by Goodry the 0 1 pitch. He bunch again this time down the third base line.
- 1:22:18Goodry up with the throws to first base hit.
- 1:22:27Amos Otis but it foul then but it fair this time. He got the ball in the dirt in front of home plate to take the back spin off of it.
- 1:22:36The third base line. Goodry fielded the ball cleanly through the first base but not in time.
- 1:22:43Base hit number three and the batter will be John Waffin who has replaced John Mayberry at first base.
- 1:22:50We learned after the ball game yesterday that John Mayberry was playing despite a spell of dizziness.
- 1:22:56We're told brought on by a pain reducing medicine.
- 1:23:01The pitch to Waffin is high. Ball one. Waffin a right hand hitter. Oh for four in the series.
- 1:23:06Over the season he batted three twenty eight. Two home runs. Twenty one runs batted in.
- 1:23:12Jambles holding on the base runner Amos Otis. Throw over there. No play.
- 1:23:20The Royals lead to nothing. You're in the bottom half of the first.
- 1:23:24Outfield is spread out for the right hand hitting Waffin. The infield up the middle.
- 1:23:29Goodry throws the first base a lob shot.
- 1:23:37Goodry over the season in two hundred eleven innings struck out a hundred seventy six men.
- 1:23:42Throwes again to first no play. He walked but sixty five.
- 1:23:53Otis again takes his lead. Right foot on the carpet left foot on the dirt.
- 1:23:57He bluffs going the pitches fouled out of play on the right side. One ball and one strike.
- 1:24:10Two outs. Otis at first a ball and a strike on right hand hitting John Waffin.
- 1:24:18And the pitch swing and a miss on a fastball strike two.
- 1:24:28One ball two strikes. Goodry takes the sign with the gloves hand on the right knee.
- 1:24:36Now straightens up drops the hands Otis goes the pitches swung on and missed strike three.
- 1:24:41The side is retired but the Royals pick up two runs on three hits. They leave a man at the end of one.
- 1:24:47Goody throw the Aggies nothing.
- 1:24:51They serve Italy in polio food products at Food Fair Pantry Fried or Hill Supermarket.

- 1:26:17Go get him champ. Reingold Burry New York.
- 1:26:24We move to the second inning. The Yankees are down by two loop and I will lead off to be followed by Cliff Johnson and Greg Nuttles.
- 1:26:31Ponella is five for sixteen with two runs better than in the series during the season he had three thirty twelve homers forty five RBI's right hand hitter and the first pitch to him from split off is inside ball one Bobby Cox the first base coach for the Yankees
- 1:26:51and the second pitch by the encouragement down to Ponella Dick House are coaching it's there split off one the left hander kicks and deals and gets a strike.
- 1:27:03That field spreads out for Ponella the infield plays him to Paul and Ponella wants the baseball exam and McRamegan looks at it leaves it in play one ball and one strike and the pitch to Ponella
- 1:27:26is going to the left center field that'll be in for the base that is going quickly to cut it off. Ponella is on his way to second throw the second base and he is safe at second base it as Ponella hustles it on down to second base
- 1:27:41and he's made a good play cutting the ball off in the gap in left center field but he's thrilled his second was not in time and Ponella is in with a double Yankees first hit of the ball game Ponella's sixth hit of the series
- 1:27:56and he's got a good one. Cliff Johnson the Yankees designated hitter Johnson five for 13 with two runs but it in Cliff Johnson went one for three against split off in the opening game of the series.
- 1:28:18And now it's time to get out request time. Now we're ready. Ponella leads at second base they play Johnson the pole and the pitch is low in ball one.
- 1:28:36He's got him behind the bag at third base pot that deep and well over in the hole at shot stop center field or other shades just a bit to it left a gap in right center field for Cliff Johnson split off one and no pitch to him.
- 1:28:52And now it is called breaking ball on the inside part of the plate one ball and one strike Johnson batted 296 during the season for the Yankees with 12 homers 31 runs batted in.
- 1:29:07And now it's time for the Yankees with 12 home runs for the Houston Astros before the Yankees obtained him on June 15 split off drops the hands below the belt the kick the pitch swing.
- 1:29:23And now it's time for the breaking ball one ball and two strikes on Cliff Johnson.
- 1:29:38Ponella turns around to check the outfield keeps his eye on Frank White who's trying to shorten up his lead at second base nothing pot take and do his way over in the hole one to pitch to Johnson.
- 1:29:53Coming forward Collins the right fielder he calls and makes the catch. Ponella makes him throw and ducks back to second base Johnson is out on a fly ball to the right fielder Collins one away and the batter is great.
- 1:30:07And now it's time for the Red Bulls three for 16 with one run batted in on the series he led the Yankees and home runs during the regular season with thirty seven he drove in 100 and seven runs
- 1:30:25The Yankee left hand hitters with the exception of Rivers have not had a good championship series.
- 1:30:36Spladoff's pitch, slain and missed that one.
- 1:30:46Rivers has had seven hits. Nettles has had three. Chris Chandlers has had the one. Reggie Jackson not playing tonight has had the one.
- 1:30:57The 0-1 delivery. Bouncing ball is hit towards second. Frank White is up with it. Makes his throw to Waffin at first in time, but on a move to third there were two out.
- 1:31:11And now for Chris Chandlers. At the end of the season, Chandlers was not swinging well and it's held over through the championship series so far.
- 1:31:22But he's the man who was the hero last year winning the deciding game, game number five with that dramatic ninth inning lead off home run.
- 1:31:32The Royals have to be thinking about that. They swing him well around on the right side defensively with a shortstop pot-tack almost behind second.
- 1:31:41Panela leads from third, the pitch to Chris low and outside a fast ball. One ball and no strikes.
- 1:31:55Panela really joined with the third base umpire. The pitch is cut on in this. One ball, one strike.
- 1:32:05Panela having words that appears with Marty Springstead. Umpiring at third.
- 1:32:13The pitch is cut by Split off the pitch. Sliced foul into the crowd down on the left field side. One ball, two strikes on Chris Chandlers.
- 1:32:28Panela walks off his lead in foul territory. The Royals are leading 2-0 here in the top half of the second.
- 1:32:34One, two, delivery. Bouncing ball through the shortstop pot-tack from near second base. He throws on the retired aside.
- 1:32:43The Yankees no runs, a base hit, a man left and out the end of one and a half the scores. Kansas City 2 and the Yankees nothing.

- 1:34:26We'll lead off the bottom half of the second for Kansas City. Rohan has announced his retirement as a player as of the end of the 1977 season and he gets a standing ovation from many of the fans here in Kansas City.
- 1:34:41He's been an outstanding player.
- 1:34:46Over his career, he will continue in baseball in a coaching capacity but not with the Royals. Gidry's first pitch to the right hand hitter is high, ball one.
- 1:34:56Rohan is making his first appearance in this year's championship series. Over the season he batted 250, no home runs, 10 RBIs.
- 1:35:05Fastball is over and the strike is called one-on-one on Rohan.
- 1:35:15And the next pitch just missed the outside part of the plate. And again, Munson thought that might have been a strike.
- 1:35:25A lot of conversations going on. Steve Bors and the first base umpire Bill Deegan.
- 1:35:31Two-one pitch to Rohan. Hit in the air toward left center field. Panella going hard and he makes the catch and holds on. Panella made a diving catch, hit the ground and held on as that ball was sinking.
- 1:35:46He got there and Rohas is retired on a good play by Lufanella. That brings up left hand hitting Darrell Porter, the catcher, 4 for 11 in the series, no runs batted in.
- 1:36:06He batted 275, he had 16 homers and had 60 runs batted in. Over the regular season for Kansas City, quite an acquisition. For the Royals the first pitch join.
- 1:36:17Checks swing, pitches low for a ball.
- 1:36:27The left handers box, feet close together. Idry Wines, the left handers pitch, breaking ball is up high. Two balls and no strikes. The Royals are leading two to nothing.
- 1:36:38In field hit by Hal McCrae at triple by George Brett and the ground out by Cowan is getting the two runs in. Porter takes a rip and fouls it down. Two balls and a strike.
- 1:36:52He weren't with us in the first inning as Brett tripled over Rivers Head in right center field. He went in hard to third base, hit nettles and the fight broke out. It did not last long.
- 1:37:04He was in the first run. Ball three. Had to play for low, three and one on Porter. Idry pumps, three-one offering. Line one hop off the glove. A grand off out of the right center field.
- 1:37:23Porter is on, makes his turn, stops and comes back as the thrill comes in from Paul Blair. That is a basic. Sinking line drive came up on a hard hop, kicked away from what he ran off.
- 1:37:36And Porter is on with the Royals fourth hit of the game. One on, one on and Frank White the batter.
- 1:37:50Right hand hitting second baseman batting ninth in the order. Four for 14 in this series with two runs batted in. White batted 245. He had five home runs, drove in 50 during the season.
- 1:38:05And he takes a strike as he left the bunch. Frank White was the top fielding second baseman in the American League this year. Fielding 989.
- 1:38:24Darrell Porter with his fifth hit of the series down at first base. Short lead. Idry looks at him and the pitch. White hits a fly ball to the left. That is deep. But back goes Penella. Backpedaling makes a one hand catch on the wanting track.
- 1:38:38Penella fires back in towards second base as Porter retreats to first. White is out. Two down. It brings up the shot stop. Fred Pate. Pate routed out to Bucky Depp in the first inning. Right hand hitter.
- 1:38:57He is now seven for 14 in the series with five runs batted in. Idry deals on the outside corner strike one. Mickey Rivers has shaded a stepper two toward left field.
- 1:39:18Penella straight away in left ball Blair guarding the alley and right center on the right hand hitting Patek. The old one pitch join. Bowl back on the screen strike two.
- 1:39:41Patek had a good year average wise. He batted 262. He led the American League and stolen bases with 53. He's had an excellent championship series.
- 1:39:54Idry off the set position checks Porter the pitch to Patek. Popped up on the behind the plate. Back comes Munson may have a play and does near the screen to retire to side. No runs at base at the man is left and at the end of two the score is Kansas City two the Yankees nothing.

- 1:41:47Paul Blair will lead off with the Yankees. He's been to bat just one time in the series and he has one base hit. Over the season he batted 262 four home runs 25 runs batted in. Blair a veteran of six championship series now and four World Series.
- 1:42:07Right hand hitter feet close fairly deep in the batter's box. He has always hit split off well in his career the pitch to him is lying but foul into the seats down in left field. Blair really got around on it folded foul.
- 1:42:23Blair starting in place of Reggie Jackson. Jackson has never hit split off well. Blair has always been a good hitter against the Lattanner.
- 1:42:32The old one pitch. He has it on the ground sharply the third dug up though by Brett the throw to first is high. He is out.
- 1:42:42But he came down on the back ahead of Blair. One way. With a good play there handling a bad throw from the third baseman Brett. Now shots got bucky down. Bucky is 2 4 11 in this series with two runs batted in the right hand hitter.
- 1:43:08Brett shortens up at third on him,
- 1:43:09plays him even with the bag.
- 1:43:12Lucky takes a breaking ball low.
- 1:43:15Then batted 247 during the regular campaign,
- 1:43:18eight homers, 49 runs batted in.
- 1:43:23Split off next pitch.
- 1:43:24Last ball fouled back.
- 1:43:26One and one.

- 1:43:31We're in the top half of the third inning.
- 1:43:36Jan Pack crowd here at Royal Stadium.
- 1:43:39At the hotel where those of us in the Yankee party stay,
- 1:43:43people around the lobby all day asking if tickets were available.
- 1:43:46They were not.

- 1:43:49Strike two.
- 1:44:01Split off into the line.
- 1:44:03Big kick.
- 1:44:04And the pitch hits his bat.
- 1:44:06Power ball.
- 1:44:07Pitch was high and inside.
- 1:44:09Bucky Dent tried to get out of the way of it.
- 1:44:11It hit his bat.
- 1:44:12Power straight down behind the plate.
- 1:44:15Cattle to the ball and two strikes.

- 1:44:28Fast ball is low.
- 1:44:30And the count is two and two.

- 1:46:58Frank White took the throw a high throw from the catcher Darrell Porter Rivers had it beaten anyway and almost over slid Frank White double tagging.
- 1:47:05But Rivers kept his foot on the bag.
- 1:47:08The other third out is two balls and a strike on what he ran off.
- 1:47:20That is the Yankees second stolen base of the series.
- 1:47:23They have not had a man thrown out.

- 1:48:55Patek went deep in the hole back into the ball and got Munson in a close play at first.
- 1:49:02Patek will play Munson deep.
- 1:49:04Brett is backed off at third.
- 1:49:06The outfield stays spread out.
- 1:49:12Now Munson wants the baseball looked at and Brummington calls for it.
- 1:49:16The Empire crosses it back to Splilloff.
- 1:49:26Splilloff beat the Yankees seven to two in the opening game of this championship series.

- 1:52:37And the one one pitch line foul into the seats on the right side.
- 1:52:45Two ball and two strikes on Lupinala.
- 1:52:57Johnson is in the on deck circle.
- 1:53:04Split off looks for his son.

- 2:11:15In fact Cowans has two runs batted in in this ballgame and a total of five in the series he protect and Mutson all have five runs batted in.

- 2:13:10Here's a two to pitch to Johnson.
- 2:13:12Swung on and line fouled into the seats out left field.
- 2:13:17John Mayberry by the way was bothered by a sore tooth yesterday.
- 2:13:21Took a couple of pain killing pills and had a bad day and today he had that tooth extracted.
- 2:13:27He's not in the ball game.
- 2:13:29Just rolling jaw.

- 2:14:19Here's a payoff pitch to Johnson.
- 2:14:21Curve ball line fouled into the seats left side and Johnson might have broken his back.

- 2:15:32Swung on it to left field McCray going back into the corner still back up against the wall and it's up against the wall and bounces back in and Johnson goes in the second base.
- 2:15:43That ball hit that reigning on top of the wall between the fence and the wall and stayed up there then bounced back in.
- 2:15:49And when it got to look like it might have been a home run but it hit the railing and bounced back in and Johnson seemed in the second base with a double.
- 2:16:00I think that wind really helped the ball then McCray went back like he thought he had a chance.
- 2:16:04He kept back pedaling finally got up against the wall there.
- 2:16:07The ball hit off the top of the wall.
- 2:16:09There's a railing running around the wall from the 3 30 mark down the line to the Yankee bullpen.
- 2:16:16And the same thing is down the right field corner.

- 2:31:54Splitdoor set the belt and the old one pitched to Rivers.
- 2:31:58Swung on a high bouncer toward first base.
- 2:32:00Splitdoor has it underhand.
- 2:32:02Woffin and they just get Rivers at first base.
- 2:32:06Black Rivers might have stepped on Woffin's foot.
- 2:32:10Moving into second base is Bucky Dent.
- 2:32:13He put out one to three. One away Dent now down at second base and the batter is Willie Randolph.
- 2:32:23Randolph has bounced a short walk in the ball game so far he's over one.
- 2:32:27Splitdoor has been throwing Randolph a lot of curve balls.
- 2:32:33Paul's breaking down and in on Willie Randolph.
- 2:32:37Wynn still blowing toward left here at Royal Stadium. Not hard.
- 2:32:44Not like it blew out toward right yesterday.
- 2:32:47Pitch to Randolph.
- 2:32:49Curve ball is low ball one.
- 2:32:53Royals have three runs on seven base hits.
- 2:32:55The Yankees one run on five base hits playing the fifth inning.
- 2:33:01Splitdoor sets the 1-0 to Randolph.
- 2:33:05Curve ball bounced a short. Potec is there.
- 2:33:08Gobbles it up throws on the first.
- 2:33:10They've got Randolph.
- 2:33:12Dent had to hold at second base.
- 2:33:18Two outs.
- 2:33:21And the batter is Thurman Mutson.
- 2:33:27And this is going to be a conference between home plate and the pitchers mound between Paul Splitdoor
- 2:33:32and his catcher Darrell Porter. Mutson drove in the Yankee round the only run scored by the Yankees
- 2:33:37in this ball game in the third inning with a single to right field.
- 2:33:43Thurman's fifth run batted into the series and his sixth base hit.
- 2:33:47He's six for 18.
- 2:33:50And as usual Mutson wants to look at the baseball.
- 2:33:58On the air Thurman batted 308 for the Yankees at 18 home runs and drove in 100 runs.
- 2:34:09Two outs. Dent down at second.
- 2:34:19Mutson taking plenty of time getting set in the batter's box.
- 2:34:24Now he's ready. And Splitdoor sets the pitch to Mutson.
- 2:34:31He checks his wing takes it down low ball one.
- 2:34:35The umpires for this ball game Nick Brimigan is behind the plate.
- 2:34:38Bill Deegan at first Jerry Newdecker at second and Marty Spring said a third base.
- 2:34:43Russ gets down the left field foul line and Jim McKean down the right field foul line.
- 2:34:52Dent with a short lead off second base.
- 2:34:55Now he takes another step. The one over to Mutson.
- 2:34:58Thurman hit on the ground the second base. Frank White digs it out.
- 2:35:01Thurman's on the first to get Mutson and the side is retired.
- 2:35:05The run's on one base hit and a man left on base.
- 2:35:09At the end of four and a half innings of play. The Royals three, the Yankees one.
- 2:35:14If you were to rate the importance of athletes put on a scale of one to ten what would you give it?
- 2:35:19How about a two? Let's face it's a dumb disease.
- 2:35:22Well we make Desinex and what do we mean when we say don't blame Desinex? Simple.

- 2:35:30Desinex has helped millions get rid of it fast.
- 2:35:33So if you're doing sneakers and socks instead of running the sand through your toes then maybe this message is very important.
- 2:35:40Athletes foot, don't blame Desinex. A product of Penwald Corporation.
- 2:35:45The guys out on the field aren't the only ones that get Jock Itch. Any guy can get it.
- 2:35:50Even a popcorn vendor like me. But I don't put up with it. I use Crux Medicated Powder.
- 2:35:58Crux goes to work immediately to help relieve the itching, chafing and rash.
- 2:36:03And its special medication helps fight the causes of Jock Itch.
- 2:36:06Don't put up with Jock Itch. Get Crux.
- 2:36:10C-R-U-E-X. It made a fan out of me.
- 2:36:16Say Frank, what's another word for action?
- 2:36:18Yoo-hoo. Yoo-hoo?

- 2:36:42I'll drink to that.
- 2:36:43Drink Yoo-hoo. Another fine product from Iroquois Brands.
- 2:36:47Bottom of the fifth and the Royals will send in Hal McRae, George Breton and then Al Cowan against Mike Torres.
- 2:36:57Torres has pitched strong baseball so far.
- 2:37:00He's faced six men, struck out three of them.
- 2:37:16McRae is two for two in the ballgame, a single and a double and he scored two runs.
- 2:37:20He now has seven base hits and 16 times at bat against the Yankees in the series.
- 2:37:26Torres deals high ball one.
- 2:37:35Mike right back, fastball lined and grabbed by Willi Randolph.
- 2:37:40Well even when they get McRae out he hits the ball hard.
- 2:37:44McRae lining the Yankees second base with Willi Randolph for the first down in the bottom of the fifth.
- 2:37:51The batter now is George Breton, the third base. He's tripled in a run, scored a run and also bounced the first.
- 2:37:57Breton's one for two in the ballgame.
- 2:38:03Left-handed hitter takes high and away, ball one.
- 2:38:12Torres winds and the 1-0 pitch. High and away again, two balls, no strikes.
- 2:38:17Torres gone a pitch, Bret away and high to try to get the fly ball.
- 2:38:24Two-0 pitch, a pen and back to him out of there, three balls and no strikes.
- 2:38:30Standing on deck is Al Cowan, the right fielder.
- 2:38:37Three-0 pitch to Bret. He backs away from fastball up and in, ball four.
- 2:38:45So Bret walks on four pitches and that'll bring on Al Cowan.
- 2:38:53Cowan's has driven in two runs in this ballgame with a bounce out and a single.
- 2:38:59He has a total of five in the series.
- 2:39:03Four base hits, 17 times that bad against the Yankees.
- 2:39:11Yankees straighten up for Cowan, claims straight away and field back looking for two.
- 2:39:17There goes Bret, pitches high, throw the second and he put it on Bret for the out.
- 2:39:22Willie Rand putting the tag on George Bret, good throw from Munson.
- 2:39:27So Bret has cut down two to four, two outs.
- 2:39:32The pitch was a strike on Al Cowan.
- 2:39:40The Royals have now stolen four bases and they've been caught three times in the series.
- 2:39:47Yankees are two for two against Royal Catching and that's of course Darrell Porter.
- 2:39:54The one strike pitch to Cowan, breaking ball outside, one and one.
- 2:39:58Missed with a slider high.
- 2:40:05Torres Wines and the one-one pitch, fastball is high two and one.
- 2:40:10Yankees in the sixth inning will have Finella, Cliff Johnson and Greg Nettles against Paul Splittor.
- 2:40:18Royals ahead three to one, fifth inning.
- 2:40:26Here's a two-one pitch to Cowan.
- 2:40:28Swung on, foul tipped held by Munson it's two and two.
- 2:40:34The Royals pushing Al Cowan for the most valuable player award.
- 2:40:39Of course the writers have already voted on that award so whatever Cowan's or Rivers or Munson or Jackson or Nettles doing this series doesn't count.
- 2:40:51Foul back.
- 2:40:53The writers supposedly have already made their decision.
- 2:41:03Two and two on Cowan's.
- 2:41:09Royce Rod-Carrou's name has been mentioned also in the most valuable player award.
- 2:41:14Goating.
- 2:41:19Jim Rice from the Boston Red Sox, Butch Hopson.
- 2:41:24Two-two pitch.
- 2:41:26Slow bouncer, pass and knocked down Victor Pone and save at first base.
- 2:41:32Paul was just out over the head of Torres.
- 2:41:34Willie Randolph went in and grabbed the ball, threw it to Chambliss and Cowan's is called safe at first base.
- 2:41:41Billy Martin now out arguing.
- 2:41:46Al Cowan picks up his second infield hit.
- 2:41:52Paul just got over the glove of Mike Torres going toward Randolph at second base.
- 2:41:58Willie scooped the ball, threw it the same motion and Cowan's was called safe.
- 2:42:04Martin still arguing with first base umpire Bill Deegan.
- 2:42:08Chambliss had bumped Deegan a bit and so had Mike Torres.
- 2:42:16So Cowan's on at first base, two outs.
- 2:42:22And when Martin finishes arguing with Bill Deegan, Amos Otis will be the batter.
- 2:42:41So Martin jogs back to the Yankee dugout and on the way as a few words for the home plate umpire Nick Premigan.
- 2:42:49And the first inning struck out in the third.
- 2:43:07Two men out.
- 2:43:10Royals leading three to one.
- 2:43:15Yankees play Otis straight away.
- 2:43:18Mike Torres at the belt and the pitch swung on and missed.
- 2:43:22No balls in one strike.
- 2:43:26Whitey Herzog does not normally use Amos Otis against Mike Torres or against Bert Bleilever or Nolan Ryan.
- 2:43:37One strike pitch, swung on, bounced up the middle.
- 2:43:39It might go through the Randolph is there, throw the first, scooped up by Chambliss and have got Otis.
- 2:43:45Played by Chris Chambliss. No runs, one head, no errors.
- 2:43:49One man left on base.
- 2:43:51At the end of five, the score.
- 2:43:53The Royals three, the Yankees one.
- 2:43:56In 1915, the owner of Nicarbaca beer bought the Yankees.
- 2:44:00He opened Yankee Stadium, foot roof, Garreg, DiMaggio and pinstripes and Yankee history was made.
- 2:44:06This was a man with a natural instinct for the best.
- 2:44:08You can taste it in Nicarbaca natural beer.
- 2:44:11We say Nicarbaca natural.
- 2:44:16Nothing should come between you and your beer.
- 2:44:20Two great traditions, the Yankees and Nicarbaca from one great man, Jacob Rupert, ain't Orange, New Jersey.
- 2:44:26Fill her up, fill her up, fill her up with Chambliss.
- 2:44:42In case you haven't looked at a calendar lately,
- 2:44:46Witte's going to be honest before you know it for once.
- 2:44:49And the colder it gets, the hotter it gets via car to start up every morning.
- 2:44:53That's where a fresh set of Champion Squawk Floods comes in.
- 2:44:56Because the fresher your club, the shirrier your stars.
- 2:44:59So this winter, don't let your old Squawk Floods leave you in the cold.
- 2:45:03Fill her up with Chambliss, World's number one seller.
- 2:45:08Fill her up, fill her up, fill her up with Chambliss.
- 2:45:16Pull off the old, plug in the new.
- 2:45:20Fill her up with Chambliss.
- 2:45:26Now, Lou Pinello will lead off the Yankees in the sixth inning.
- 2:45:29Royals lead three to one.
- 2:45:31Royals have three runs on eight bases.
- 2:45:33The Yankees one run on five.
- 2:45:39Waiting off the Yankees, the last spieler.
- 2:45:42Lou Pinello's had a fine series, not only with the bat but with the glove.
- 2:45:46He's really done a pretty good job.
- 2:45:48Doubled in the second inning but was left stranded.
- 2:45:51Bounced the third in the third.
- 2:45:53So Pinello's one for two in this ball game.
- 2:45:56Six for 18 in the series with two runs bad at it.
- 2:46:00It'll be Lou Pinello, Cliff Johnson and then Greg Nettles against Paul Splittor in the sixth inning.
- 2:46:19Here's Splittor's first pitch to Pinello.
- 2:46:21Swung on and fouled back.
- 2:46:29The Yankees and the Royals fighting for the right to face the Los Angeles Dodgers.
- 2:46:35And the World Championship.
- 2:46:37It will start on Tuesday in the American League City.
- 2:46:41Two games in the American League City then back out to the nice league city Los Angeles for three.
- 2:46:53And the final two if necessary.
- 2:46:55Back at the American League City.
- 2:46:57Two strike pitch now.
- 2:46:59Swung on and fouled back.
- 2:47:030-2.
- 2:47:06Pinello uncharacteristically trying to hit a home run.
- 2:47:15Here's a two strike pitch to Pinello.
- 2:47:17Inside.
- 2:47:18Splittor one ball two strikes.
- 2:47:23And the Yankees are going to be a little bit more aggressive.
- 2:47:28Here's a one two to Pinello.
- 2:47:31Swung on it in the air to right field.
- 2:47:33Cowan's going back.
- 2:47:34He's got plenty of time.
- 2:47:35Back fiddling.
- 2:47:36And he makes the catch.
- 2:47:42One away.
- 2:47:46That'll bring on the designated hitter for the Yankees.
- 2:47:48Cliff Johnson.
- 2:47:50Johnson has applied to right field and double.
- 2:47:54Double on top of the wall in left field.
- 2:47:56The ball hit on top of the wall.
- 2:47:57Bounced up against a mesh railing.
- 2:47:59And came back on the field.
- 2:48:03Johnson one for two in the ball game.
- 2:48:06Six for fifteen in the series.
- 2:48:10Pitch to Johnson outside ball one.
- 2:48:21Splittor winds and the one oh pitch.
- 2:48:25Inside a curveball two balls and no strikes.
- 2:48:29Red playing deep at third base and pot tag playing Johnson to pull a shortstop and.
- 2:48:35Way deep.
- 2:48:37Got a step or two on what would be the outfield grass.
- 2:48:41White to second baseman shading Johnson over near the bad and deep.
- 2:48:46Two oh pitch curveball is high ball three on deck is Greg Nettles.
- 2:48:56No action in the Royal Bullpen.
- 2:48:59The Royals lead three to one in the sixth inning.
- 2:49:05Splittor rocks and the three oh pitch.
- 2:49:08Low ball for Johnson walks on four pitches.
- 2:49:12We'll take 15 seconds for station identification on the New York Yankee home of champions radio network.
- 2:49:18W. M. C. A. Strauss communications in New York.
- 2:49:22This is my Alan.

- 2:49:38Wings and doesn't get a fastball.
- 2:49:40No balls in the truck.
- 2:49:42Time is being called by the umpire coming in from right field Jim McKean.
- 2:49:48McKean cannot get anybody's attention.
- 2:49:51Now he sets the splittor fan the pitch outside it's one and one.
- 2:49:56Now McKean is yelling toward the second base umpire Jerry Newdecker trying to get his attention.
- 2:50:00And time is finally called.
- 2:50:05Object loose out in right field.
- 2:50:07Some kids glove it looks like.
- 2:50:10Throwing back in the seats.
- 2:50:12Count is one ball and one strike on that'll say that happened with Don money on a bases load at home in Milwaukee.
- 2:50:19I think it was Jim McKean with the umpire.
- 2:50:21Nettles takes low two and one McKean had called time.
- 2:50:25Money at a grand slam home run didn't count.
- 2:50:28Had to play it over Yankees won the ball game.
- 2:50:33Two balls one strike on that'll go through out.
- 2:50:36Johnson on at first base the Royals leading three to one in the sixth inning.
- 2:50:46Splittor sets.
- 2:50:48The pitch to Nettles.
- 2:50:50Swung on and missed.
- 2:50:52Breaking ball it's two and two.
- 2:51:04Woffin playing behind Johnson at first base two to pitch.
- 2:51:08Swung on and fouled.
- 2:51:10Nettles goes down swinging for the second out.
- 2:51:23Going to second strike out for Paul Splittor.
- 2:51:26That'll bring on Chris Chambliss.
- 2:51:28The Yankee first baseman.
- 2:51:30Chambliss has been up twice bounced out both times.
- 2:51:33Shortstop ready pot deck.
- 2:51:35Pot deck plays Chambliss will almost behind second base.
- 2:51:39A lot of formation because the second base and white plays him straight away.
- 2:51:44Chambliss takes the curve for a strike.
- 2:51:52Chambliss won for 15 in the series so far.
- 2:51:57Splittor sets.
- 2:51:59The one strike pitch outside a curve ball it's one and one.
- 2:52:07But the last 10 days of the season Chambliss started into a mini slump.
- 2:52:12Lost his timing and it's carried over into the series.
- 2:52:16The one one pitch.
- 2:52:18Swung on it on the ground the second Frank White digs it out he'll play at the first base.
- 2:52:22And the side is retired.
- 2:52:25No run. No hit to walk and a man left on base.

- 2:59:44The Yankees one run on five against Paul Splitor and here to see if we can't do something about that to scooter Phil Rizzuto.
- 2:59:51All right William Paul Blair bounce the third pops a second and at first Pete LaCotte who pinched
- 3:00:00for John Watton Splitor pitch right one call.
- 3:00:05I think Splitor is going harder now in the last two innings than he did through the first five innings.
- 3:00:14Three to one the Royals lead.
- 3:00:17Deep to left but it's going to curve foul that would have been plenty far enough to have been a home run.
- 3:00:23Look at Blair he knew he just missed it boy I said he got a slider just got a little bit out in front of it way back into the left field seats.
- 3:00:37Three beginnings to go for the Yankees only trail by two but they need some base runners and split off once another sign Blair steps out.
- 3:00:47It'll be Blair Dent and Rivers.
- 3:00:55The O2 pitch curve bounce the third Brett waits for the hop fires the first in time.
- 3:01:03Good gun by George Brett at third base one away.
- 3:01:09Now Bucky Dent fly the right single center.
- 3:01:28Split off kicks curve down low ball one. Split off is allowed five hits walk to struck out two and just one run.
- 3:01:43The pitch to Bucky that curve is in one on one.
- 3:01:58The low two and one left hand a wine fastball hit in the air to right field counts is right there.
- 3:02:19Now Mickey Rivers make a struck out single stolen a base and scored and bounced out.
- 3:02:32Richard at first base.
- 3:02:34That was a big play in the ballgame.
- 3:02:36Dent had let off with a single Mickey hit a Baltimore chop that almost got over split off head.
- 3:02:45To Mickey low ball one.
- 3:02:49The ball with the bag at first and Brett laying in as he normally does against Rivers.
- 3:03:16The one pitch foul down the left field line ball and two strikes.
- 3:03:30Beautiful day here and another beautiful night.
- 3:03:36The kick and the pitch ground ball at Frank White he's got it.
- 3:03:40The first in time to get Rivers and the Yankees are down in order at the end of six and a half or three Yankees one.
- 3:03:51I'm feeling good.

- 3:05:34All right, we're going to the bottom of the seven stands the city fans are going bananas.
- 3:05:42The ball game is not over yet.
- 3:05:44Right.
- 3:05:45White has played the left and struck out.
- 3:05:56I think a lot of people sound like me tomorrow where they've been yelling for the through these first seven innings.
- 3:06:05It's the white ground ball of third nettles knocked it down.
- 3:06:08They got him.
- 3:06:11Oh man, that nettles really hounded that ball.
- 3:06:13Beautiful play by Greg on a hard shot that bounced off his chest.
- 3:06:21One away his pot deck bounce the short foul of the catcher and thrown out on a fine play by Greg nettles.
- 3:06:31Pot deck has it in every game but this one in every playoff game he's participated in last year in this year ball one.
- 3:06:48No pitch strike call one on one.
- 3:07:04One one pitch line to right field deep player backing up and makes the catch.
- 3:07:12They've held the pot deck and toe and now Hal McRae and he has been a tough out in the last couple of games.
- 3:07:21He's single and scored in the first double and scored in the third and lined up to Willie Randolph.
- 3:07:31Two out nobody on three to one the Royal's lead.
- 3:07:34McRae tough man to defense against high ball one steps into the pitch and go to right.
- 3:07:43Pull the ball as he pulled that double down the left field line.
- 3:07:47Rounder in the hole base.
- 3:07:50His third base hit of the ball game.
- 3:07:52That'll go for a second and they got him.
- 3:07:55He is out McRae trying to look at Lou Penelope saying what do you think you're playing with kids.
- 3:08:01He had him up by 10 feet.
- 3:08:04Good play by Penelope is really hustling.
- 3:08:07He threw the ball a bucky dental was confused turned around still at plenty of time that's egg McRae.
- 3:08:13No runs ahead.
- 3:08:15No errors.
- 3:08:16Nobody left at the end of seven.
- 3:08:18It's the Royal's three and the Yankees one flavor of Venetian cuisine.

- 3:09:55All right Yankees got to get something going here they trailed three to one of the top of the eighth Willie Randolph bounce the short twice and walk.
- 3:10:04Split off pitch strike on the outside corner.
- 3:10:10It'll be Randolph Monson and Penella.
- 3:10:14They have had only five hits or split off.
- 3:10:18Curved as a base hit Willie Randolph starts off the top of the eighth with a single center.
- 3:10:24And now the Yankees have the men coming up that they want.
- 3:10:28Monson Penella and Johnson.
- 3:10:31German has driven in the one Yankee run with a clutch two out singles.
- 3:10:36Monson at his best under pressure.
- 3:10:39He's robbed of a base hit and a fine play by Patek in the first single right in the third and bounce the second and the fifth and here comes Whitey Herzog.
- 3:10:50Mingori and Bird Mingori the left hander and Bird the right hander are up in the bullpen.
- 3:10:59Normally when Whitey Herzog comes out he makes a change but let's see.
- 3:11:07The Yankees split off and Gidry were told to throw as hard as they could and go as long as they could.
- 3:11:13Everybody would be ready in the bullpen.
- 3:11:21And they want Doug Bird.
- 3:11:24I like that I said to the last time that Whitey Herzog took out a pitcher was pitching well it cost them.
- 3:11:32And now they're out and the Hasler, Warden Bird and the Yankees went on to win the ball game.
- 3:11:37So let's see if history repeats.
- 3:11:39Right now we'll take a quick break.
- 3:11:44WMCA Strauss Communications in New York.
- 3:11:48This is Mel Allen.
- 3:11:50Thanks to Emory's computer tracking system.
- 3:11:53No matter where your package is you can always touch base with it.
- 3:11:57Emory the Air Force in Air Prate.
- 3:12:06And win compliments on your cooking with the prize play of all Polio Italian food products now at Food Fair, Pantry Fry and Hill.
- 3:12:16Well Doug Bird has come in and I said it had split off but it's another beautiful ball game.
- 3:12:22He went seven innings plus one batter here in the eighth allowed six hits.
- 3:12:27He walked only two, he struck out only two and has allowed just the one run so far.
- 3:12:33Randolph is at first base with nobody out.
- 3:12:36He will be split off responsibility and Doug Bird comes on.
- 3:12:47Bird is making his third appearance of these playoffs.
- 3:12:52He's only worked in inning in two-thirds allowing two hits and no runs.
- 3:12:58And he'll be facing Munson, Vanilla and Johnson and we just might see Reggie Jackson is swinging a bat and a dugout come up and pinch hit for somebody.
- 3:13:10I tell you that would be a fitting ending to a very unusual season if Reggie would pinch hit and hit one out.
- 3:13:18That would be beautiful.
- 3:13:22All right, Thurman Munson getting ready outside the batter's box.
- 3:13:27Bird has completed his warm-up and as per usual Munson wants to look at that ball and Bremengan keeps it in play.
- 3:13:37So Munson got one ball thrown out out of four looks.
- 3:13:43Randolph at first, nobody out.
- 3:13:46Yankees trailing three to one in the top of the eighth.
- 3:13:52Stretched by Bird, pitched to Munson down low ball one.
- 3:14:06Thurman taking plenty of time.
- 3:14:10Bird to the belt, the pitch is winging in the midst.
- 3:14:16One-on-one.
- 3:14:22Wheatley-Cock holding first against Randolph.
- 3:14:26Outfield straight away in deep on Munson.
- 3:14:30Quick throw to First-Willie-Bach.
- 3:14:40Bird sets and the pitch is winging in the midst.
- 3:14:43Good slide of that time by Bird, one ball, two strikes.
- 3:14:47Every once in a while, Doug Bird will quick pitch your batter.
- 3:14:52He does not, he did it on that pitch.
- 3:14:55He does not come to a complete set.
- 3:14:59He struck him out.
- 3:15:01He jammed Munson with a fastball.
- 3:15:06Good strikeout for Doug Bird.
- 3:15:11And now Lou Penella.
- 3:15:15And coming out on deck is Reggie Jackson.
- 3:15:19Looks like he'll bat for Cliff Johnson.
- 3:15:23Penella has doubled, bounced the third and fly to right.
- 3:15:30One man out in the top of the eighth.
- 3:15:33Yankees trailing three to one.
- 3:15:48Willie Randolph let off the inning with a base hit at first base.
- 3:15:53Throw to First-Willie-Jumps-Bach.
- 3:16:03Bird sets and the pitch is a base hit to center field.
- 3:16:07Randolph's going to go to third base, yes he is.
- 3:16:10He kind of hesitated and then went it.
- 3:16:12Now the Yankees have run as at first and third.
- 3:16:14And now he's going out and Reggie Jackson is coming up to bat.
- 3:16:19Holy cow, wouldn't this be something?
- 3:16:25Reggie Jackson who did not start tonight and took it.
- 3:16:29Like a man, I said, he said he took a lot of guts by Billy Martin to make that kind of a call.
- 3:16:35Take him out.
- 3:16:36But he did it and he's resigned to it.
- 3:16:38Now he's up as a pinch hitter.
- 3:16:41Run as at first and third and the Royals leading three to one.
- 3:16:55The bird gets the sign.
- 3:16:59Here's the stretch and the pitch down low ball one on Dick Greg Nettles.
- 3:17:07The Nellad first, Randolph at third.
- 3:17:18Jackson now getting set in the box.
- 3:17:22Bird sets and the pitch.
- 3:17:24Power back, he had a good cut and found it back off the mask and onto the screen.
- 3:17:36The bird gets the sign.
- 3:17:44The pitch, power back, he had his pitch that time and just got under it.
- 3:17:52One ball, two strikes.
- 3:18:01Drop spot for Jackson.
- 3:18:06Run as lead at the corners.
- 3:18:09Bird sets.
- 3:18:11There's one hit to center field, it'll get a run in.
- 3:18:13Otis coming on, he can't get it.
- 3:18:15It's a base hit and a run score.
- 3:18:17Otis was fooled on that ball.
- 3:18:19Jackson comes through with a clutch single.
- 3:18:22Stopping at second pin, that was a sinking line drive that Jackson hit in.
- 3:18:26Here comes Whitey Herzog.
- 3:18:29I told you the last time that Herzog came out to take Andy Hesler out,
- 3:18:33who was pitching a beautiful ball game, it turned around and the Yankees won it.
- 3:18:38And now the Yankees right back in this ball game is three to two.
- 3:18:42Run as that first and second only one out.
- 3:18:46And it looks like the left hand of Mingori is coming on.
- 3:18:55I said what a tough spot for Reggie Jackson and he came through it.
- 3:19:00Beautiful, beautiful clutch base hit.
- 3:19:03All right, Bart Lucheev, I'll give you a station break.
- 3:19:06Right now, take it.
- 3:19:09WMCA Strauss Communications in New York.
- 3:19:12This is Mel Allen.
- 3:19:14Unlike other air freight carriers,
- 3:19:17Emery doesn't just go to the major cities, they also go to the minors.
- 3:19:24All right, Steve Mingori has come on.
- 3:19:34Greg Nettles is scheduled to be the batter.
- 3:19:38Now anything can happen in a short series.
- 3:19:41Billy Martin as you know, rested Reggie Jackson.
- 3:19:44And now with the left hand of Mingori coming up and Nettles having his problems in this series,
- 3:19:49we'll see what Billy Martin is going to do.
- 3:19:53No, no, no.
- 3:19:57Greg is coming out.
- 3:19:59In this game, Nettles has bounced the second, fouled the third and struck out.
- 3:20:05But Nettles has come through with so many clutch bases all year.
- 3:20:12Yankees have Penella at second, Jackson at first,
- 3:20:19and Greg Nettles will be the batter.
- 3:20:26Three to two, the Royals are leading only one out.
- 3:20:31Yankees have had three bases here in the eighth inning.
- 3:20:35One off split off, two off bird.
- 3:20:42And Nettles now will really have to guard that plate.
- 3:20:46Just dunk that ball, hit one off the end or break the bat,
- 3:20:50get one over the infield, who'll take anything.
- 3:20:54Or a home run, yeah, that wouldn't be bad.
- 3:20:58All right, Jackson off first, Penella off second.
- 3:21:02One man out of the Royals leading three to two in the top of the eighth.
- 3:21:08Stretch by Mingori.
- 3:21:10The curve almost hits Nettles.
- 3:21:12So Greg tried to get hit with that one, just missed his right shoulder.
- 3:21:17Mark Littel is up in the Royals bullpen and on deck is Chris Chambliss.
- 3:21:24That bring back memories.
- 3:21:26The kick and the pitch popped up, but it's going to go in the stands out of play.
- 3:21:31LeCocque looking at it, it goes back over the Royals, dug out, it's one-on-one.
- 3:21:41LeCocque goes to the Rosin bag.
- 3:21:48Jackson leads off first, Penella off second.
- 3:21:51Luth got to get a pretty good jump because they sit best and good throwing outfield,
- 3:21:57swing and a miss at a side-on curve.
- 3:22:00Greg really fooled with that pitch.
- 3:22:04It's one ball, two strikes.
- 3:22:15And I mean, Gori looks in for the sign, comes to the belt and the pitch.
- 3:22:22Deep to right field, but Cowan's is back there.
- 3:22:25Penella did not tag, now he goes back, it's too late.
- 3:22:29Penella put a tag and easily gone a third as that full-fault Cowan's center back to the
- 3:22:35warning track in front of the bullpen in deep right field.
- 3:22:42And now Chris Chambliss.
- 3:22:48Boy, I'd said if Nettles got under that another eighth of an inch,
- 3:22:52and that would have been way back in the bullpen.
- 3:22:56And now Chris Chambliss, Chris is really overdue.
- 3:23:02And I would just love to see him stroke one of the opposite field.
- 3:23:06He has had one hit in 16 at bats in his playoff series,
- 3:23:13looking for his first run batted in.
- 3:23:16And what a play by Frank White.
- 3:23:19He throws the second.
- 3:23:22He's toppled that ball.
- 3:23:25And the Jackson is arguing, Potsack has hurt as Jackson went into him hard.
- 3:23:31It looked like Potsack bobbled that ball, but a great play by Frank White as he dove to his right.
- 3:23:38Smothered the ball on a short hop and flipped to Potsack for the out.
- 3:23:44And Potsack is down as Jackson went into him hard.
- 3:23:50And it really looked like Potsack had bobbled the ball, but the umpire called him out.
- 3:23:55That has to be the clutch play of the series right there.
- 3:23:59Frank White, unbelievable diving backhand grab,
- 3:24:03and then flipped to Potsack for the fourth play on Jackson.
- 3:24:10Remenders play by Frank White.
- 3:24:13Chris Chambliss just can't believe it.
- 3:24:15He hit that ball as hard as he could hit it.
- 3:24:19Potsack now up, and he's being helped off the field.
- 3:24:23Yankees pick up a run, three hits, no errors, two men left.
- 3:24:29Big hand for Potsack, and now at the end of 7 1 1 1 1,
- 3:24:35innings is the Royal 3 and the Yankees 2.
- 3:24:38Next time you have an appetite for fine steak and seafood,
- 3:24:42go directly to Ponteys at Des Brasses and West Street, here in New York, and Cart Blanchett.
- 3:24:48Ponteys is one of many fine restaurants in New York,

- 3:25:34Cart Blanchet, you'll know you're going first class, and so will everyone else.
- 3:25:39Alright, we're going into the bottom of the eighth inning on a disputed call at second base.
- 3:25:48When it really looked like Potec had bobbled the ball as Jackson hit him hard,
- 3:25:53it's the Royals three, the Yankees two,
- 3:26:00and George Brett will lead it off.
- 3:26:03He has dribbled, driven in a run and scored, bounced the first and won.
- 3:26:09Mike Charest's first pitch is a curved low ball one.
- 3:26:15Look ahead to the top of the ninth schedule, batters, Blair, Dent,
- 3:26:20and Rivers is a foul out of play, one-on-one.
- 3:26:37Next pitch, a bouncing ball is shot, Dent has it, fires the first one away.
- 3:26:47That'll bring up Al Cowan, who has bounced the third single a left at an infield hit.
- 3:26:54He's driven in two runs tonight, going right down to the wire.
- 3:27:03This final game of the playoffs to see who gets in the World Series,
- 3:27:07and it's not over yet by a long shot.
- 3:27:12The Royals scored two in the first, with alert defensive play, they would not have scored any,
- 3:27:18they scored one in the third, Yankees picked up one in the third, one in the eighth.
- 3:27:24Pitch to Cowan's low ball one.
- 3:27:35The kick and the pitch strike call one-on-one, Cowan took it, but it hit the outside corner.
- 3:27:41And on deck, Amos Otis.
- 3:27:51Cowan's got three hits in the first game, then the Yankees held him hitless until his second time up tonight.
- 3:27:59Line drive left center, Rivers digging and makes the catch.
- 3:28:03Man was that ball tag, that looked like a base hit that just took off.
- 3:28:07Mickey Rivers made the play two out.
- 3:28:12And now Amos Otis.
- 3:28:14Otis had a bust single struck out and bounced out to second base.
- 3:28:37Two out, nobody on in the bottom of the eighth, there's nobody leaving this ball box.
- 3:28:42With a game like this, Pitch to Otis, high ball one.
- 3:28:57This crowd is yelling themselves hoarse tonight. The 1-0 delivery, strike call one-on-one.
- 3:29:15One ball, one strike, two out.
- 3:29:26Otis taking a long time getting ready.
- 3:29:33The kick and the pitch strike two call, one ball, two strikes.
- 3:29:47Ready for the 1-2 delivery. Here it is, low it's 2-2.
- 3:30:03Two balls, two strikes, two out. The kick, the pitch, oh, he just missed the outside corner.
- 3:30:113-2.
- 3:30:21Three balls, two strikes, two out, nobody on bottom of the eighth, Royals in front three to two.
- 3:30:32Pitch by Tauri, both four.
- 3:30:36And half the watch Otis. That's only the second wall given up by Tauris.
- 3:30:43Badapeep LaCocque will pinch it for John Wappen in the sixth and struck out.
- 3:30:49Billy Martin's coming out.
- 3:30:52And it looks like he's going to bring Sparky Lyle in.
- 3:30:57We're waiting to see he has not signaled as yet.
- 3:31:05Tauri's tying his shoelace out there.
- 3:31:13Billy has not made a move yet.
- 3:31:16And he's going to let Tauri stay in.
- 3:31:18I'd say the mic has really been thrown that ball tonight.
- 3:31:24So LaCocque steps in.
- 3:31:30Two out, Otis at first. Billy went out to remind Tauris
- 3:31:34who did not pay too much attention to Cookie Rojas back in the fourth
- 3:31:39and Cookie stole a base.
- 3:31:42Stretch by Tauris. There goes, they run a pitch out. Throw to second.
- 3:31:46And he stays.
- 3:31:48The throw was in the dirt. Randolph caught it, came up with the glove,
- 3:31:52and by the time he came down, it tagged him on a pitch out, Otis steals second base.
- 3:32:01Once the throw was a one hop at a Randolph, that was a ball to LaCocque.
- 3:32:09And they're moving the outfield around towards left and left center.
- 3:32:18Tauri is to the belt. The pitch foul and he's trying to hit to left field.
- 3:32:24Strike one on LaCocque, one on one.
- 3:32:39And the pitch down low, two and one.
- 3:32:55Two men are out.
- 3:32:57Stretch by Mike. Pitch low is three and one.
- 3:33:05Cookie Rojas.
- 3:33:16Royals leading three to two on the bottom of the eighth.
- 3:33:20Three one pitch. Strike ball.
- 3:33:23Three and two kind of a delayed strike ball by the plate umpire.
- 3:33:28Full count.
- 3:33:38Tauri is ready for big payoff pitch.
- 3:33:41Here it is and he's, holy cow, he must have just missed with that one.
- 3:33:46Here comes Billy Martin.
- 3:33:52And he wants pocky lyle.
- 3:33:59So that's going to be all for Mike Tauri and Mike pitched beautifully.
- 3:34:03He pitched one, two, three, four.
- 3:34:08In two thirds. Five and a third innings.
- 3:34:15He allowed just three bases.
- 3:34:22Walk three struck out four has not allowed any runs and pocky lyle will come on.
- 3:34:31And the batter is Cookie Rojas.
- 3:34:37Rojas has lined hard to left single, stole a base and then bounced a short.
- 3:34:47There it is. And he run.
- 3:34:49Gidry started this game.
- 3:34:51And in the first inning, the Royals picked up two runs on three hits.
- 3:34:55One of them a bunch single which didn't mean anything but ground ball to pocky dents.
- 3:35:01Pocky had trouble getting it out of his glove, getting a good grip.
- 3:35:04McRae beat it out and then Brett hit a line drive that Mickey Rivers kind of missed.
- 3:35:08George went for a triple and slid in the third.
- 3:35:11A big fight between Nettles and Brett.
- 3:35:14Both teams erupted and were out in the field scuffling around.
- 3:35:19And then Brett, when order was restored, scored on a high ball of more chop by Al Cowan.
- 3:35:26Royals picked up another run in the third inning on a double by McRae.
- 3:35:30A ground up by Brett that sent McRae to third where he scored on Al Cowan's single.
- 3:35:35That was all a scoring for the Royals.
- 3:35:37Yankees picked up a run in the third with two-out Rivers single, stole second.
- 3:35:41Randolph walked and Munson lined a single right to drive in Rivers.
- 3:35:45And they scored their second run in the eighth, a single by Randolph,
- 3:35:49single by Penelope and a single by Jackson Pinchettie.
- 3:35:52But then a great play by Frank White on the disputed call at second.
- 3:35:56And Reggie Jackson said Pottek bobbled a ball when Reggie slid on Omaha
- 3:36:01and Pottek had to be helped off the field.
- 3:36:05But the umpire didn't change his calls.
- 3:36:07Falkie's ready and Rojas will be stepping in.
- 3:36:32All right, Otis at second, LaCocque at first.
- 3:36:38And Cookie Rojas-Tabata, Falkie Lyall who was outstanding in last night's relief job.
- 3:36:48He kicks, delivers, swing and a foul, strike one.
- 3:37:00Falkie looking around at his defense, gets back on the rubber now, gets the sign from Munson.
- 3:37:11And the pitch to Rojas, high one-on-one.
- 3:37:24Ready for the one-one pitch.
- 3:37:29And here it is, foul back and out of play.
- 3:37:33Upstairs, one ball, two strikes.
- 3:37:37Falkie doesn't like the feel of that ball.
- 3:37:43Gets another one.
- 3:37:47Walks in back of the mound, get a little rise in.
- 3:37:53Big short a backer, looks the ball from his glove to his pitching hand, gets the sign from Munson.
- 3:38:06And the pitch, struck on Maud, how do you like that Falkie Lyall?
- 3:38:11He is unbelievable.
- 3:38:14No runs, no hits, no errors, two men left at the end of eight.
- 3:38:19It's the Royal 3 and the Yankees 2.
- 3:38:29Hey everybody, this is Mel Allen.
- 3:38:31You know I've spent a lot of years broadcasting baseball games, but man, what I wouldn't have given the broadcast a fight,
- 3:38:38a championship fight with heavy weights like Lewis, Alley, or middle weights like Graziano and Sugar Ray.
- 3:38:45Now I've finally got my chance to broadcast the champion, the lightweight beer champion, new Rhyme Gold Extra Light.
- 3:38:54Friends, you're going to hear a lot more about this premium beer because Extra Light got it all together.
- 3:39:01Less filling, round after round, only 87 calories a can, but the full body taste still goes the distance.
- 3:39:10Believe me, this is the one that'll set you beer fans' cheering, less filling, round after round.
- 3:39:17The new title holder, the lightweight beer champion, Rhyme Gold Extra Light.
- 3:39:24Go get them champ, Rhyme Gold Burry, New York.
- 3:39:30And you're going to like when we do things at Amco Transmission because if you take your car to Amco in the morning,
- 3:39:40chances are you'll have a very same evening.
- 3:39:43That's one day service, and that's just another reason we're the world's largest transmission specialist.
- 3:39:50You're going to like the way we do things at Amco because at Amco we get most cars done in one day.
- 3:40:00Amco AA MCO.
- 3:40:06Well, Dennis Lennon now who came on and beat the Yankees here at Royal Stadium in a starting role.
- 3:40:19He pitched the full nine innings allowing just four hits and two runs as Camargo to do the pitching.
- 3:40:26Whitey Herzog sending the right hander out there at the stadium.
- 3:40:32He pitched nine innings and that on can't rebound that quickly.
- 3:40:39He'll be working to Paul Blair and then Roy White is on deck as a pinch hitter for Bucky Dent.
- 3:40:47And then Mickey Ribbon.
- 3:40:55So Paul Blair has bounced the third twice and popped the second.
- 3:41:05Lennon the right hander.
- 3:41:07We're in the top of the ninth Yankees trail by a run. That's low ball one.
- 3:41:19Dennis Lennon winds.
- 3:41:23Blair went after a pitch out of the strike zone would have been two and all, but Paul was guessing and looking to hit one out of here.
- 3:41:30A little over anxious.
- 3:41:33And then the Yankee bench players getting up walking around.
- 3:41:39One one pitch fastball fouled back on the screen. Strike two.
- 3:41:50One ball two strikes.
- 3:41:56And then the third.
- 3:42:04Three Yankees two in the top of the ninth.
- 3:42:12will not be able to reach it.
- 3:42:16And it's still a ball and two
- 3:42:17strikes.
- 3:42:31Tension all the way through this
- 3:42:33ballgame has been unbelievable.
- 3:42:36Again the one to press he held
- 3:42:38it to and to.
- 3:42:45The job to hold up on that kind
- 3:42:47of a pitch to ball to strike
- 3:42:49nobody out nobody on top of the
- 3:42:51ninth.
- 3:42:52He's need to run the tie.
- 3:42:54The pitch fastball foul that'll
- 3:42:56be out of play back into the
- 3:42:57seats.
- 3:43:05When it doesn't like the feel of
- 3:43:07that ball gets a new one from Nick
- 3:43:09Bremigan.
- 3:43:10Roy White is on deck.
- 3:43:20All right the wind up by Linus
- 3:43:22pitch is lying to set a field
- 3:43:24and that ball is going to drop
- 3:43:25in for a base hit.
- 3:43:27Holy cow ball Blair hung in
- 3:43:29there as well as I've seen him
- 3:43:31hang in there all year off a
- 3:43:33tough right hand pitcher.
- 3:43:35And now Roy White's going to get
- 3:43:36down and talk to Dick Houser for
- 3:43:40these Yankees out there.
- 3:43:42Never say that.
- 3:43:45White has got his instructions
- 3:43:47from Houser who got him from
- 3:43:48Martin.
- 3:43:52Roy White has been about five
- 3:43:54times in the series with two base
- 3:43:56hits.
- 3:43:59And both of them have been
- 3:44:01doubled on deck Mickey Rivers
- 3:44:03with Willie Randolph to follow
- 3:44:05the ball.
- 3:44:06Brett is in a third.
- 3:44:09La Cac holding first against
- 3:44:12Paul Blair.
- 3:44:22Which throw to first base.
- 3:44:24Blair is back.
- 3:44:29There's a banner hanging over
- 3:44:31the fence near the bullpen they
- 3:44:32want to pull back.
- 3:44:33And they do.
- 3:44:36All right.
- 3:44:37Nobody out.
- 3:44:38Paul Blair with a big clutch
- 3:44:40single leading off the top of
- 3:44:41the ninth.
- 3:44:47White digging into the plate
- 3:44:48here's the stretch by Leonard
- 3:44:51pitch to White is outside ball
- 3:44:53one.
- 3:44:53Roy had not squared around a
- 3:44:55bunch.
- 3:45:00Mark Lutel and Larry Gora right
- 3:45:03hander and a left hander are up
- 3:45:04in the Royals bullpen Blair
- 3:45:07leading off first Leonard wheels
- 3:45:10and throws the first Blair is
- 3:45:11back.
- 3:45:18Nobody out another quick throw
- 3:45:20and Blair is back.
- 3:45:21Boy that was a good move that
- 3:45:22time by Leonard Blair getting a
- 3:45:28good lead in case of a ground
- 3:45:29ball he wants to break up a
- 3:45:30possible double play.
- 3:45:33It's the Roy outside drop by
- 3:45:34Porter no advances to a nothing
- 3:45:38and now Leonard wants still
- 3:45:39another baseball.
- 3:45:46Two balls no strikes nobody out
- 3:45:54Blair with a good lead at first
- 3:45:55but he's got to be careful.
- 3:45:56Leonard has that good move.
- 3:46:00He comes down to the belt a
- 3:46:02pitch to Roy high ball three
- 3:46:04three and nothing and now
- 3:46:07Porter called time and goes out
- 3:46:09to talk with Dennis Leonard.
- 3:46:17Anky players getting fidgety
- 3:46:18down in the dugout.
- 3:46:21Herman Munson loosening up his
- 3:46:23leg.
- 3:46:23Mickey Rivers goes down to
- 3:46:25change bats comes out on deck
- 3:46:28three balls no strikes on Roy
- 3:46:30White Leonard sets and the pitch
- 3:46:34strike ball three and one.
- 3:46:49The Yankees play a little hit
- 3:46:50and run here or something to
- 3:46:52stretch by Leonard.
- 3:46:54No Blair does not go swing.
- 3:47:10All right a full count on Roy
- 3:47:12White.
- 3:47:13Leonard had missed the plate with
- 3:47:15three straight pitches came in
- 3:47:16with two strikes.
- 3:47:18There goes Blair fouled back on
- 3:47:20the screen Blair had some jump
- 3:47:22I'd said it but of course Roy
- 3:47:24White with two strikes on him
- 3:47:25had to protect the plate.
- 3:47:30So Roy stays alive and the Yankees
- 3:47:34stay alive still nobody out and
- 3:47:37the Yankees trailing by a run.
- 3:47:44Leonard nods his head at the
- 3:47:45sign.
- 3:47:46Quick throw to first Blair jumps
- 3:47:58Leonard had stepped on the mound
- 3:47:59and stepped off almost stumbled
- 3:48:03he comes set.
- 3:48:06Blair is going fouled back and
- 3:48:08out of play.
- 3:48:11Boom man.
- 3:48:13Tension is unbelievable.
- 3:48:15Both teams battling to get in a
- 3:48:16world series.
- 3:48:19The biggest prize in baseball is
- 3:48:21to get in the series.
- 3:48:26Why so many times the playoffs
- 3:48:27are much more exciting than the
- 3:48:30world series.
- 3:48:32I player with a good lead again.
- 3:48:36Leonard said he's going again to
- 3:48:38pitch both four.
- 3:48:40Holy cow Roy White with a great
- 3:48:42eye.
- 3:48:42Runners that first and second
- 3:48:46nobody out here comes Whitey
- 3:48:48Herzog.
- 3:48:55While Whitey Herzog is walking
- 3:48:57out to the mound we'll pause for
- 3:48:59station identification.
- 3:49:02WMCA Strauss Communications in
- 3:49:04New York.
- 3:49:06This is Mel Allen.
- 3:49:08Emery goes to play in the
- 3:49:09places everyone else goes to as
- 3:49:13well as the places no one else
- 3:49:14goes to.
- 3:49:16Emery the Air Force and Air
- 3:49:18Prey.
- 3:49:27Well Whitey Herzog has really
- 3:49:30been over managing in this ball
- 3:49:32game.
- 3:49:34First he took split off out of
- 3:49:36his pitch.
- 3:49:37In a tremendous game put in Doug
- 3:49:39Bird.
- 3:49:40They cream bird for two bases
- 3:49:43and a run.
- 3:49:43Then he started this inning
- 3:49:45with Dennis Leonard who had
- 3:49:49pitched nine full innings just a
- 3:49:51couple of days ago.
- 3:49:53Leonard couldn't do it as Blair
- 3:49:54Singleton Whitewalk.
- 3:49:55Now he's bringing in Larry Goura
- 3:49:58and Goura was cream pretty hard
- 3:50:01by the Yankees in the game he
- 3:50:02started.
- 3:50:03Which was yesterday.
- 3:50:06Larry Goura.
- 3:50:08So Goura is out there and Mickey
- 3:50:10Rivers will be the batter and
- 3:50:12Mickey had four bases in
- 3:50:14yesterday's game he's one for
- 3:50:16four in this game with a stolen
- 3:50:17base and a run scored.
- 3:50:21And following Rivers is Rand
- 3:50:23off and Monson with the
- 3:50:26first base in the game.
- 3:50:28And then he's going to play
- 3:50:29Rivers is Rand off and Monson with
- 3:50:33the Royals leading three to two
- 3:50:36and the top of the ninth inning
- 3:50:43and everything riding on this
- 3:50:46last inning.
- 3:50:49162 game schedule about thirty
- 3:50:52five games in spring training.
- 3:50:53The fifth playoff game.
- 3:51:01And all for that pot of gold at
- 3:51:03the end of the rainbow the World
- 3:51:04Series.
- 3:51:08Goura still taking his warm up
- 3:51:09pitches.
- 3:51:16Yankees with an outstanding
- 3:51:18chance right here to other
- 3:51:20fastest men on base and their
- 3:51:23fastest men definitely at bat
- 3:51:25Mickey Rivers players at second
- 3:51:28white is at first.
- 3:51:31I've had more coffee tonight.
- 3:51:33This game goes in extra innings
- 3:51:35Gene Michael's going to have to
- 3:51:36finish on the air for me because
- 3:51:39my voice was shot when I got
- 3:51:41here.
- 3:51:43All right Mickey Rivers steps
- 3:51:45in with player had second and
- 3:51:49white at first LaCocca is in at
- 3:51:51third.
- 3:51:54Look at this weird defensive
- 3:51:56alignment.
- 3:51:56Holy cow pot tech is playing
- 3:51:59third base and Mickey Rivers
- 3:52:01started a bunch takes it high
- 3:52:03ball one.
- 3:52:04I tell you this is quite a
- 3:52:05defense and now how's this going
- 3:52:07to talk with River because on
- 3:52:09this play if Rivers Buster third
- 3:52:11Brett's going to grab a turn
- 3:52:12around throw to pot tech they'll
- 3:52:14force Blair white the second
- 3:52:17baseman is standing about two
- 3:52:18steps from second base.
- 3:52:20Pot Tech is closer to third than
- 3:52:21he is to second when they let
- 3:52:25Mickey swing away there's no
- 3:52:26way they're going to double
- 3:52:27Rivers up for sure.
- 3:52:31Three to two the Royals lead
- 3:52:32why never saw a defensive
- 3:52:34alignment like this.
- 3:52:35Here's a stretch.
- 3:52:36Mickey swings and misses he went
- 3:52:37after a bad pitch one on one.
- 3:52:47That's it.
- 3:52:47Herzog's got that infield so
- 3:52:50confused they don't know what
- 3:52:51they're doing out there.
- 3:52:53The clock looks in at the bench
- 3:52:54white looks in at the bench
- 3:52:56stretch by Gore and Mickey runs
- 3:52:59up the Bunt takes it low to him
- 3:53:01one.
- 3:53:02Oh I tell you you've got a bunch
- 3:53:05at first base if he wants the
- 3:53:07third they got a fourth easy at
- 3:53:09third base and now how's it
- 3:53:13yells Mickey Rivers out of the
- 3:53:15box and says.
- 3:53:16Swing away make don't but now
- 3:53:19that might be a decoy.
- 3:53:22We'll wait and see.
- 3:53:25Larry Gore comes to the belt and
- 3:53:27the pressure swings and files it
- 3:53:29back on the screen.
- 3:53:32And now Brett wants to know
- 3:53:33what to do.
- 3:53:34Pot Tech goes back to his normal
- 3:53:36position.
- 3:53:37I said you Mickey had a lot of
- 3:53:39things going for him there that
- 3:53:40weird defensive alignment.
- 3:53:43A ground ball anyplace but he
- 3:53:44had a ground ball anyplace but
- 3:53:46right at Brett Blair leads his
- 3:53:50second white leads at first two
- 3:53:53and two on Mickey Rivers.
- 3:53:55He's just got to get a piece of
- 3:53:56it at a slow ground ball the
- 3:53:58pitch and he gets a base at the
- 3:54:00right field.
- 3:54:02There's going to score.
- 3:54:03What's going to go to third only
- 3:54:05how Mickey Rivers come through
- 3:54:07with that clutch.
- 3:54:09Holy cow I got to say it again
- 3:54:11the ball game is tied three
- 3:54:12apper NIKE
- 3:54:42But Mickey Rivers comes through with a clutch single a right field driving in Paul Blair.
- 3:54:49That run is charged to Dennis Leonard who could be the losing pitcher in this game.
- 3:54:55The Yankees have runners at first and third and Willie Randolph will be the batter.
- 3:55:00And we got another pitcher coming on and we said that both clubs would have everybody in the bullpen
- 3:55:06and Whitey Herzog's going to try and use them all tonight.
- 3:55:09Let's see who's can anybody know who this is.
- 3:55:17Mark Littell.
- 3:55:21You know I don't even have room to put him down on my store.
- 3:55:25Mark Littell.
- 3:55:27One two three four this is the sixth royal pitcher of the night.
- 3:55:32Hey Bart Lutzi you got any music you can play back in the studio give me a minute rest.
- 3:55:40Well Gene Michael anything you'd like to say on the air.
- 3:55:44Well if you want to sing now forget that.
- 3:55:47This is unbelievable.
- 3:55:49I want to talk about a team that did not give up all year under the most adverse conditions.
- 3:55:57Press radio television.
- 3:56:01Ball players fighting.
- 3:56:05To come up win their divisional title to be the tough red sox and ballamore club.
- 3:56:12Battles royals down to the last game.
- 3:56:15Coming into the eighth inning trailing by two they picked up one in the eighth one of the
- 3:56:19ninth the scores tied and now they got one of that first and third with nobody out.
- 3:56:27We're not conceding the game to the Yankees but to be able to come back
- 3:56:32with a partisan crowd rooting on every pitch they are very quiet right now I can tell you that.
- 3:56:41And again the Yankees nothing but speed out there whiter third rivers that person ran off the
- 3:56:46batter and the infield is playing halfway which gives the Yankees another advantage.
- 3:56:53So Mark Luttrell comes to the belt checking the runners the pitch to Rolly Randolph high ball
- 3:57:03one on Dick Thurman Munson Reggie Jackson doing some cheerleading on the bench boarded he
- 3:57:13got a clutch pinch hit single Luttrell steps off the rubber Randolph steps out of the box.
- 3:57:28Stretched by Luttrell and the pitch low on a way almost a wild pitch it's doing nothing.
- 3:57:36Suddenly all the pressure is on the royals as the Yankees had nine innings of constant pressure
- 3:57:43on them three free the score stretch by Luttrell and the first ball is in their strike ball two months.
- 3:57:59All right rivers off first wide off third
- 3:58:16Luttrell checking them these steps back off the mound worried about Mickey Rivers over there.
- 3:58:21All right Willie Randolph back in the batter's box as Luttrell sets
- 3:58:34and the pitch outside and high three and one.
- 3:58:40Oh Billy Martin with a lot of options right now nobody out he could send rivers on a hit and run
- 3:58:47he could let Randolph take Randolph swing away
- 3:58:55three balls one strike nobody out Luttrell to the belt and the pitch and that'll get him in deep
- 3:59:04the center field Rivers is going to tag up and all way back on the warning track Otis catches
- 3:59:10it white scores easily Rivers easily in a second the Yankees lead four to three look at that Yankee bench
- 3:59:17going bananas Willie Randolph hit one four hundred feet that Otis had to go back to the track and catch
- 3:59:26and the Yankees are out in front and that run by the way is charged to Dennis Leonard so he is
- 3:59:33the pitcher of record right now and the batter is Thurman Munson Munson is one for four with a
- 3:59:41single and a run batted in and it looks like they're gonna are they gonna put them on wait a minute
- 3:59:46Porter is saying something to Luttrell with Rivers he's saying watch Rivers at second base that's
- 3:59:52what he's saying he'll pick your pockets you know keep an eye on him man he got the second before
- 3:59:57white cross on plate all right the stretch by Luttrell and the pitch to Munson bouncing ball
- 4:00:06a short Rivers goes what that's grow to first low but scooped up by LaTox Munson is out Rivers is
- 4:00:13at third there are two away and now Lou Pinella Lou has doubled single bounce the third fly to right
- 4:00:22one more run would look beautiful on my lineup card
- 4:00:31Mickey Rivers at third I don't believe I've ever seen Mickey try and steal home
- 4:00:38for Gail and Cisco is coming out now remember Reggie Jackson went in for clip Johnson so Jackson
- 4:00:46remained the designated hitter and Reggie is on deck Gail and Cisco talking with George Brett
- 4:01:01Darrell Porter and Mark Luttrell and now Dick has it comes in to talk with Lou Pinella
- 4:01:10modern meetings going on all over this ballpark Jerry Walker and Gene Michael
- 4:01:15having a big meeting at the bottom of the night everybody goes back
- 4:01:25and Lou Pinella throws his gum away as he usually does when he comes up to bat
- 4:01:34and Luttrell will pitch from a stretch position to keep an eye on Rivers
- 4:01:37is two out two runs in the Yankees late four to three
- 4:01:53stretch by Luttrell
- 4:01:57and the pitch to Pinella bouncing ball towards the hole Brett one handed to his left
- 4:02:01throw the first half and throw all he's down he threw it six feet over the Cogshead River scores
- 4:02:09and there's that run I wanted and the Yankees lead five to three and my voices come back I can't
- 4:02:15believe it an error by George Brett and going to second base is Lou Pinella and the Yankees are
- 4:02:24out I can't believe my voice is back the Yankees are out front five to three that run is charged to
- 4:02:32Larry Gore and suddenly a lot of silence here at Royal State Reggie Jackson who got one of the
- 4:02:43biggest hits of the year for him and the Yankees when he pinched it in the eighth to driving the
- 4:02:48runners up there and they'll add second which Sir Reggie swings and fouls it off strike one
- 4:03:04on deck Greg Nettles
- 4:03:09Yankees have scored three times here in the top of the ninth
- 4:03:13they lead five to three Luttrell kicks delivers a ground ball and white to his left pass it
- 4:03:21throws Jackson out Reggie hit the ball well but the Yankees pick up three runs on two bases
- 4:03:29one big error one man left at the end of eight and a half the Yankees five in the Royal Street
- 4:03:43all right we're going to the bottom of the ninth inning the scheduled batters are Darryl Porter
- 4:03:48Frank White and Freddie Patek and on the mound is Farky Lyles
- 4:03:53Farky has pitched to one man in this game and struck him out that was cookie Rojas
- 4:04:02Darryl Porter has singled
- 4:04:04by deep to center Micky Rivers made a great play on him and flying to left
- 4:04:23Farky Lyles
- 4:04:37I had left hand hitting Darryl Porter is in there Lyles in the wind up his pitch popped up on the
- 4:04:44left side Fred Stanley who took over for Bucky Dan is out and makes the catch and it's one out
- 4:04:51the chicken kind of sneaked in there lucky dent was pinch hit four and so Stanley went out to play
- 4:04:59short one out and there goes the helmet out of the dugout I think it's why the Hurzad helmet
- 4:05:06Frank White that's why the left struck out bounced the third
- 4:05:09the wind up by Lyles and the pitch is right in there strike one ball
- 4:05:23that whole Yankee benches up Lyles winds again
- 4:05:27and the swing in a miss like two Yankees five Royal scree we're in the bottom of the ninth inning
- 4:05:42White taking a little time now he's back in
- 4:05:48Farky Kits delivers lined up base hit the center field
- 4:05:51one Micky Rivers that was a tricky play by Micky it looked like he wanted White to think he had
- 4:05:59lost the ball fired it in so Farky Lyles had gotten two quick strikes on Frank White
- 4:06:09and you've got to slide her up a little bit ready protect bounces short foul to the catcher bounce
- 4:06:15the third fly to right time is called
- 4:06:28Yankees lead by two
- 4:06:34good drawing Gulliter up in the Yankee bullpen is a swing in a miss by pot thick strike one
- 4:06:40and that's where spark he's got to keep that slider he does it 95 percent of the time once in a while
- 4:06:45the old hand one is he did the white
- 4:06:57miles sets again the kick and the pitch swinging a miss strike two nothing in two on little freddy
- 4:07:04pot deck gambler's holding first against Frank White
- 4:07:19stretched by sparky the kick the pitch bouncing ball of third nettles goes to second one
- 4:07:25back to first double play and a full game is over and the Yankees are in the world series
- 4:07:31flip Johnson lost issue and they are all over sparky lyles you talked about a comeback this
- 4:07:38has got to be one of the greatest comebacks in all of baseball history and by the way for you
- 4:07:45Yankee fans reserve bleachers seats for games one and two of the world series will go on sale
- 4:07:51tomorrow morning at the Yankee stadium advanced ticket I'm not even on oh I'm on from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. four tickets each limit four per game perc
- 4:08:02person I mean this I'm in a state of shock here the Yankees came back from first a two nothing deficit then a three one deficit
- 4:08:13to win the ball game unbelievable finish the Yankees win it five to three and once again the Royals
- 4:08:25are beaten by the Yankees in the playoffs look at this Butterfield and Michael shaking hands
- 4:08:32oh I got a shake hands with the stick I wanted said that's one of the greatest thrill I've ever
- 4:08:39had in baseball really unbelievable what are we gonna do
- 4:08:54yeah let's go into a commercial going to the commercial back there while I regain my wits
- 4:09:00oh the score yes the final score the Yankees five and the Royals three
- 4:09:04well we are back here very very wide ballpark but in that Yankee clubhouse right now the ball players
- 4:09:20and deservedly so are going wild I'd say to this club you've got to give Billy Martin
- 4:09:27if he doesn't get manager of the year I'll be greatly surprised I know Earl Weaver's going to get a lot of votes
- 4:09:32but if they know what Billy Martin had to go through this year and these ball players who
- 4:09:37finally put it all together put aside all their differences all their petty bickering
- 4:09:44played as a team for that last month of the season and then this playoffs and a comeback in a game
- 4:09:49like this that meant so much three to one deficit scoring a run in the eighth and three in the ninth
- 4:09:56to win it five to three and really I got to say Whitey Herzog did a great job all year up till
- 4:10:03tonight when he over managed so break but they can only be one winner gotta be a loser in the
- 4:10:11Yankees of the winners so that's it I want to thank all you fans who've listened so faithfully
- 4:10:17all year long this might be the last time you hear the old scooter on the Yankee broadcast
