- 0:31Speaker 3: And A good one morning. Is It's good Wednesday morning
- 0:34Speaker 3: to you. Welcome to Ask the Experts. Dave Allen in
- 0:37Speaker 3: for the vacationing Dale Cooper this morning. Ryan Nicholson is
- 0:40Speaker 3: our Producer's a rainy Wednesday morning. It's going to be
- 0:44Speaker 3: like this all day. We're expecting heavy rain as a
- 0:46Speaker 3: matter of fact, And just was checking traffic. Well, you
- 0:49Speaker 3: just heard some of the traffic there, but I think
- 0:50Speaker 3: there's some updates even to that that there's an accident.
- 0:54Speaker 3: I think it was eastbound and just heard bits and
- 0:56Speaker 3: pieces of it. I'm the worst traffic reporter in the world,
- 0:58Speaker 3: but I think it was eastbound. I'm coming in on
- 1:01Speaker 3: Virginia Street on I sixty four. So that's you're going
- 1:03Speaker 3: to have that when you have rain. As I said
- 1:08Speaker 3: on my show yesterday, there's far more accidents in rainy
- 1:11Speaker 3: weather than normally there are in most snow situation. Larry
- 1:15Speaker 3: Dawson is here, Larry, good morning, Henry.
- 1:16Speaker 4: Good morning. And you are correct. You and I were
- 1:19Speaker 4: talking right before we came on and we both travel
- 1:21Speaker 4: off Putnam County and make the journey to Charleston, and
- 1:25Speaker 4: you're correct. It seems like when the snow hits, we
- 1:28Speaker 4: get very tentative to where we're at.
- 1:30Speaker 3: People well, and especially when you see it now ices.
- 1:33Speaker 3: If you have a sudden ice storm, it's another story.
- 1:35Speaker 3: But when you get snow, people look out their window
- 1:37Speaker 3: and they and they see it. Yes, but with rain.
- 1:40Speaker 3: I left my house this morning a little bit earlier
- 1:42Speaker 3: because I'm doing a lot of different things up here
- 1:44Speaker 3: today and so I left a little bit earlier than
- 1:46Speaker 3: I normally did. And when I came in, it wasn't raining.
- 1:48Speaker 3: But then where my office is upstairs, for some reason,
- 1:51Speaker 3: and I don't know why it is, I can I
- 1:54Speaker 3: don't have a window, but I can actually hear the rain,
- 1:57Speaker 3: and it about about twenty thirty minutes ago. It was
- 2:00Speaker 3: just pouring, and it's going to be that way, the
- 2:02Speaker 3: meteorologists tell us throughout the day here in the Kanaw Valley.
- 2:05Speaker 3: But it's part how are you man?
- 2:07Speaker 4: I'm going good? You ready for Christmas?
- 2:09Speaker 3: Always? What did you think of the game last night? Well,
- 2:12Speaker 3: you know, you and I also were talking about this
- 2:14Speaker 3: before I went on the air. I am a notoriously
- 2:18Speaker 3: early to bed type person, and so I did make
- 2:22Speaker 3: it to kickoff. I know this makes me a horrible
- 2:25Speaker 3: human being, a horrible West Virginia. I made it to kickoff,
- 2:28Speaker 3: but anything pretty much after that I had to read
- 2:31Speaker 3: about this morning because it was those nine o'clock kickoffs
- 2:35Speaker 3: are not very conducive to early risers like myself. But
- 2:39Speaker 3: from what I understand, it was the tale of two halves.
- 2:42Speaker 3: I mean, the story that we have posted a WV
- 2:45Speaker 3: metro news dot com says that the Mountaineers they called
- 2:48Speaker 3: them lethargic in the first half, and I think that's
- 2:50Speaker 3: based on what I've seen, a good way to describe it.
- 2:53Speaker 3: But they came around in the second half. I made
- 2:54Speaker 3: a game out of it.
- 2:55Speaker 2: They did.
- 2:56Speaker 3: They did.
- 2:56Speaker 4: I tell you that West Virginia's been well represented here
- 3:00Speaker 4: the last few days and the sports Marshall with a
- 3:02Speaker 4: soccer you know, that was unbelievable that us to go
- 3:06Speaker 4: to the Nationals. And I didn't understand, and I don't
- 3:10Speaker 4: watch soccer, but I'm, you know, anything from West Virginia.
- 3:13Speaker 3: I want to support him.
- 3:15Speaker 4: And Dell kind of explained Ron Hughes explaining to us
- 3:19Speaker 4: that you go into overtime and then sudden deaths. So
- 3:22Speaker 4: I guess they got into that sudden death And that's
- 3:25Speaker 4: a great representation of the state.
- 3:27Speaker 3: It is.
- 3:28Speaker 2: It is.
- 3:28Speaker 3: And of course that was the second time in four
- 3:30Speaker 3: years that Marshall's played for national championship, including winning one.
- 3:33Speaker 3: And and I've also been sitting in on hotline with
- 3:36Speaker 3: Weekly in the afternoons. And if you were not a
- 3:40Speaker 3: Marshall fan, you're not a West Virginia. That Vermont story
- 3:44Speaker 3: is a great, great story for some of they've ever
- 3:45Speaker 3: won a national championship and a men's sport in I think,
- 3:48Speaker 3: I think in anything, uh and and for them, and
- 3:51Speaker 3: they came out of nowhere. They were completely unseated and
- 3:54Speaker 3: Marshall was seated, but they came out of nowhere. And
- 3:57Speaker 3: it's a great story. It's a great story.
- 4:00Speaker 4: Sure seems to in. I'm gonna use the word reinvent,
- 4:05Speaker 4: you know, with Brad Smith coming down there, it is
- 4:08Speaker 4: I've with the football. I'm unfortunately Hypha's gone, but you
- 4:12Speaker 4: took that team and won the championship. We have two
- 4:15Speaker 4: two young men from Poka, Toby neatha Payne.
- 4:19Speaker 2: Yes.
- 4:20Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:20Speaker 4: Their father is a friend of mine. He's done some
- 4:22Speaker 4: plumbing work for me. And Brent is one of the
- 4:24Speaker 4: nicest fellows you ever met. He's just I can see
- 4:27Speaker 4: why he's got good children because he's a good man
- 4:29Speaker 4: and you'll see that. But hometown, Poka Sports, it's uh,
- 4:34Speaker 4: you know, near and dear to my heart. I'm one
- 4:36Speaker 4: of the other side of the river. Do you have
- 4:38Speaker 4: you have children? Winfield?
- 4:40Speaker 2: By chance? No?
- 4:40Speaker 3: No, do not have children anywhere?
- 4:42Speaker 4: Okay, nothing wandering around? Well, stay wavering in general ology
- 4:46Speaker 4: test and all that.
- 4:47Speaker 3: I'm too old at this point him, but.
- 4:49Speaker 4: That's a good representation through there. You know what time
- 4:53Speaker 4: we were entering into. We spoke briefly last time I
- 4:55Speaker 4: was on here, and it always comes down to car
- 4:59Speaker 4: buying time and we're in the crunch time. All the
- 5:02Speaker 4: dealers will put the red carpet out and invite you
- 5:05Speaker 4: in and I've had callers over the years to ask me,
- 5:09Speaker 4: when's really the best time, you know, And I've always
- 5:12Speaker 4: said the best time to I cars right now.
- 5:14Speaker 3: When you need it, when you need one and you've
- 5:16Speaker 3: got the money, exactly, you know, right now, at least
- 5:19Speaker 3: that's what I did when I had my selling shoes,
- 5:21Speaker 3: or what I'd say, right now, let's do it.
- 5:24Speaker 4: But Christmas, between Christmas and New Year's and you have
- 5:29Speaker 4: pushed the and you've advertised for the auto dealers and
- 5:32Speaker 4: spoke of them, that is the big push.
- 5:34Speaker 3: Yeah, oh it is. It is that I can tell
- 5:36Speaker 3: you having done radio for as long as I have,
- 5:40Speaker 3: and then it's going to be the same next week,
- 5:42Speaker 3: myself and several of the others, we're going to be
- 5:44Speaker 3: out and about doing live broadcast after Christmas from various
- 5:48Speaker 3: car dealerships. There was a time that I remember back
- 5:52Speaker 3: when I was doing radio and logan and we had
- 5:54Speaker 3: some of our advertisers at that time where folks like
- 5:57Speaker 3: Steven's Auto Center and Thornhill and the old Low in
- 6:00Speaker 3: motor sales, and we dealt a lot with the more
- 6:02Speaker 3: group out of out of Williams and South Williams and Kentucky.
- 6:06Speaker 3: I can remember one year, and I think Christmas may
- 6:09Speaker 3: have fallen on a weekend that between Monday and this
- 6:14Speaker 3: would have been twenty six, twenty seventh, whatever. Between Monday
- 6:17Speaker 3: and that Saturday, I did seven different live broadcast in
- 6:22Speaker 3: five days from different car dealerships. And I mean we
- 6:26Speaker 3: were I was the guy, and you know, I mean
- 6:28Speaker 3: they sent us out and I'd be at one in
- 6:30Speaker 3: the morning, take a couple hours off, and be in
- 6:32Speaker 3: another one in the afternoon, and which in the world
- 6:34Speaker 3: of advertising is kind of strange because you have to explain,
- 6:38Speaker 3: you know, when I'm at I'm at deal, I'm at
- 6:40Speaker 3: I'm at Larry's Auto Sales in the morning, I'm saying
- 6:43Speaker 3: this is absolutely the best deals. And then three hours
- 6:46Speaker 3: later I'm on the air going, well, now I'm at
- 6:48Speaker 3: Dawson's Auto Sales and these are absolutely the best deals
- 6:51Speaker 3: out there. But it's just part of the game.
- 6:53Speaker 4: How I met Randy Daniels and a few other people
- 6:56Speaker 4: at the station. Oh years ago, I was a sales
- 6:59Speaker 4: bancher at White Dodge. C. E. White had just bought
- 7:01Speaker 4: the Dodge store to Patrick Street and digital. You know,
- 7:05Speaker 4: we didn't have there was no such things, did you
- 7:07Speaker 4: You either did radio, television or newspaper, and I've got
- 7:12Speaker 4: to know the people from all three. But the big
- 7:15Speaker 4: push was having people like yourself come in and do
- 7:19Speaker 4: the radio spots, and you are the area and where
- 7:22Speaker 4: from ninety day or excuse me, ninety minutes to a
- 7:24Speaker 4: couple of hours. The dealership that kind of led to
- 7:29Speaker 4: Christmas theme in earlier days was Cino Motors. Cino Motors
- 7:34Speaker 4: is now the Moses Group in Saint Alban's and mister
- 7:39Speaker 4: Love had the Chevrolet and Oldsmoville franchise when he started
- 7:43Speaker 4: in the early early days of advertising between Christmas and
- 7:47Speaker 4: New Year's he made a carnival out of it. I
- 7:50Speaker 4: mean it started very early in rain late and trade
- 7:53Speaker 4: to pizza for the car. He created a carnival atmosphere
- 7:57Speaker 4: that drew lots of lots of people into Saint Albans,
- 8:00Speaker 4: West Virginia. And I think by what he had, what
- 8:04Speaker 4: he did during those years multiple years that he owned
- 8:07Speaker 4: that store, about three decades, maybe maybe nearing four, he
- 8:11Speaker 4: created that activity that I think at the time all
- 8:15Speaker 4: the other dealers followed. Now that's not true today because
- 8:18Speaker 4: there is no Cino Motors and everybody today is multi franchised.
- 8:23Speaker 4: You know the Stephens Auto Group. They have a store
- 8:25Speaker 4: in Princeton's them. It's a bushy store. They had to
- 8:27Speaker 4: for Chrystler store that you know well. And Danville they
- 8:31Speaker 4: have a Chevrolet store they recently purchased. It's the King
- 8:35Speaker 4: Cole Chevrolet, which is now Stephens Chevrolet and o'kill and
- 8:38Speaker 4: they have a couple of supercenters and they have the
- 8:40Speaker 4: one that I've previously had for thirty seven years. They're
- 8:43Speaker 4: a Nitro and that seems to be the way. That
- 8:47Speaker 4: is the way of the future. But prior to that,
- 8:50Speaker 4: you had to stand on your own two feet and
- 8:54Speaker 4: advertise your goods. And he would create by doing once
- 8:57Speaker 4: again a car. He had multiple radio stations there at
- 9:01Speaker 4: all time. Oh yeah, I've done that before too, and
- 9:03Speaker 4: full page collar newspaper ads. And that's how the Christmas
- 9:09Speaker 4: to New Year's I think activity started in the automobile
- 9:13Speaker 4: business in this area. When I say this area, probably
- 9:15Speaker 4: Huntington to Charleston, Saint Ovans being in between. Mister Love
- 9:20Speaker 4: created that atmosphere of multiple advertising. Well, here we are
- 9:28Speaker 4: in twenty twenty four, getting ready to go in twenty
- 9:30Speaker 4: twenty five, it's changed. You have about three or four
- 9:33Speaker 4: different families. It kind of owns the majority of the dealerships.
- 9:37Speaker 4: You have the Joe Pwell that owns several, you have
- 9:39Speaker 4: Stevens that's want to grow. You have Dutch Miller, and
- 9:42Speaker 4: you have the Moses and they own predominantly the majority
- 9:46Speaker 4: of the dealerships around. Joey has multiple franchisers in South Charleston,
- 9:51Speaker 4: there's very few standalones.
- 9:53Speaker 3: And you had what was the the Ball Brothers. Oh yeah,
- 9:56Speaker 3: and they have now Sean and David have now changed
- 10:00Speaker 3: to Victory Victory Automotive and that's actually a national group
- 10:05Speaker 3: and they've rebranded uh those dealerships in Barbersville and Charleston
- 10:10Speaker 3: as Victory as well. So so that's that's kind of
- 10:12Speaker 3: a change and something that you and I have talked about,
- 10:15Speaker 3: and you and Coop have talked about it as well
- 10:16Speaker 3: when you do the show. Not only has the car
- 10:19Speaker 3: business changed, the car buyer has changed, yes, because you know,
- 10:23Speaker 3: because of the Internet that you mentioned earlier, they can
- 10:26Speaker 3: do they can do research not only on the type
- 10:29Speaker 3: of truck or car that they want, but they can
- 10:33Speaker 3: also do research on their own on that particular car.
- 10:38Speaker 3: If you have a car on the lot and I
- 10:41Speaker 3: was looking around at the stevens Ato Group of Nitro
- 10:43Speaker 3: facebook page just before I went on here, by the way,
- 10:45Speaker 3: there's a sweet Cadillac on there, really really sweet Cadillac.
- 10:49Speaker 3: Ron Ron Hughes, our sales weasel is one of ours,
- 10:52Speaker 3: is a big Cadillac guy. He and Tim Morris uh
- 10:55Speaker 3: and and I talked to I was talking to Ron
- 10:58Speaker 3: about it earlier. But anyway, you now you have the
- 11:01Speaker 3: ability for a buyer to pick out a specific vehicle,
- 11:06Speaker 3: and if it's a used vehicle pre owned, you can say, well,
- 11:11Speaker 3: you can look it up for yourself. There's Carfax, There's
- 11:13Speaker 3: all these other different tools that you can use that
- 11:15Speaker 3: they can say, okay, I want this twenty twenty two Silverado.
- 11:21Speaker 3: I know where it came from. So it's like there's
- 11:24Speaker 3: a lot of knowledge on behalf of the buyer now
- 11:25Speaker 3: as well.
- 11:26Speaker 4: There's a tremendous amount. And you just mentioned the red Cadillac.
- 11:30Speaker 4: It's Jody. I have an office next door to I mean,
- 11:36Speaker 4: though I'm not the owner, I still have a great
- 11:39Speaker 4: relationship with all the personnel over there. But I saw
- 11:42Speaker 4: Jody chairman emeritis.
- 11:44Speaker 3: There you go, emeritis, but the one of us can
- 11:46Speaker 3: spell emeritis. We put it on a business card for you.
- 11:48Speaker 4: We go ahead that he was taking pictures of that,
- 11:51Speaker 4: and you know, in fifteen minutes later you're going to
- 11:53Speaker 4: see it pop up for your phone if you you know,
- 11:54Speaker 4: if you look at Facebook or you look at the
- 11:57Speaker 4: Steven's Auto website, that is that started. It seemed like
- 12:02Speaker 4: to me the switchover came maybe around right after the
- 12:06Speaker 4: eight nine I called the nuclear winner. It's when when
- 12:11Speaker 4: the automobile business or when we thought the world was
- 12:13Speaker 4: going to end, when they had the meltdown, when we
- 12:16Speaker 4: come out of that, it seems like that was the
- 12:19Speaker 4: march toward digital advertising. When I say digital, it's the
- 12:21Speaker 4: word I use that if you're going through someone's phone
- 12:25Speaker 4: and Facebook, you know, seems like it goes hand in
- 12:27Speaker 4: hand their web page, their Facebook page, and it's you
- 12:32Speaker 4: can't not see it. I guess there's there's some things
- 12:36Speaker 4: that you hear people say, well, I can't unsee that.
- 12:39Speaker 4: You can't unsee these things, and so you might as
- 12:42Speaker 4: well take advantage of it. And when I was in
- 12:44Speaker 4: the retail business and I used to tell my I
- 12:46Speaker 4: had a very small staff, is that it's basically free
- 12:51Speaker 4: in the entry level if you go to basically just
- 12:55Speaker 4: the Facebook. I call it fake book sometimes, but if
- 13:00Speaker 4: you pitch your goods out there, that is the elementary
- 13:03Speaker 4: level to start showing your product. Well, you know, I'm
- 13:06Speaker 4: a little older than you, and when you start in radio,
- 13:09Speaker 4: you had your way. When I started selling automobiles, I
- 13:12Speaker 4: had my way and we didn't have these phones walking
- 13:15Speaker 4: around to bring all this information, you know, right, like
- 13:18Speaker 4: you said, you can sit on a couch that you
- 13:22Speaker 4: you enjoy that couch and you can you can sit
- 13:24Speaker 4: there and explore many many items.
- 13:26Speaker 3: Oh yeah, and social media in general and the algorithms
- 13:29Speaker 3: they know what you're looking at. And I have been,
- 13:33Speaker 3: and I don't care to tell you, I have been
- 13:35Speaker 3: on this big Cadillac thing. Hey, as I don't own
- 13:37Speaker 3: a Cadillac, I've never owned a Cadillac, but I am
- 13:39Speaker 3: quite fond of the Cadillac models. And I was I've
- 13:45Speaker 3: been looking around a lot just to different Cadillacs and whatever.
- 13:49Speaker 3: The one I built online, by the way, was one
- 13:51Speaker 3: hundred and twenty four thousand dollars. Now my wife wasn't
- 13:56Speaker 3: quite as excited. I said, Hey, I just built this
- 13:58Speaker 3: black what do they call the black wing?
- 14:00Speaker 2: Think?
- 14:00Speaker 3: Yes, I just built this online. It's one hundred and
- 14:03Speaker 3: twenty four thousand dollars. I will not be driving that
- 14:05Speaker 3: anytime soon. But because of that, I have been getting
- 14:08Speaker 3: a lot of ads and whatever pop ups and on
- 14:11Speaker 3: on on social media for Cadillacs. But this particular car
- 14:15Speaker 3: you need to talk to I think chasing the folks
- 14:18Speaker 3: there because they need to get make this a demo
- 14:20Speaker 3: car for me, you know, and they can put their
- 14:23Speaker 3: logo on the side of it. This used to be
- 14:26Speaker 3: a thing where all the car you know, the salesman
- 14:29Speaker 3: at the various dealerships used to all have demos. And
- 14:32Speaker 3: they don't do that as much anymore. Now. My man
- 14:35Speaker 3: Woody from the Beat has got a deal worked out
- 14:38Speaker 3: with a local dealer where he gets a car. So
- 14:41Speaker 3: needs you to talk to chasing those folks about that
- 14:43Speaker 3: and say and not just I need that Cadillac. That's
- 14:46Speaker 3: what I need. I need that it's it's a radiant
- 14:48Speaker 3: red Cadillac. It's they've made it the cover picture on
- 14:52Speaker 3: the Stevens Auto Group of Nitro Facebook page. I need
- 14:56Speaker 3: that car.
- 14:57Speaker 2: Make that happen.
- 14:57Speaker 4: If we had thought about this weeker earlier, we could
- 15:00Speaker 4: have roded that into Hurricane parade yeah, think about that.
- 15:03Speaker 3: So to me driving the Mountain truck in the American
- 15:05Speaker 3: Parade that.
- 15:06Speaker 4: We had the red Cadillac with Stevens Auto and Nitro
- 15:10Speaker 4: on it, you could I could drive you stood up
- 15:12Speaker 4: through the people. Wait, throw candy.
- 15:15Speaker 3: Yeah, I probably had the things thrown at me. It
- 15:16Speaker 3: would probably be more like it. But it is a
- 15:19Speaker 3: great vehicle. And and and again Larry is now with Stevens.
- 15:22Speaker 3: Well he's talking. We're talking about Stevens Audigre with Nitro.
- 15:27Speaker 3: A great selection of vehicles there, not only there, but
- 15:30Speaker 3: at all the all of the location.
- 15:32Speaker 4: Chase does an excellent job of moving that inventory from
- 15:36Speaker 4: store to store. And that is that is something also
- 15:40Speaker 4: that I have witnessed over the last of ten years,
- 15:43Speaker 4: as as the the groups started to grow the dealerships,
- 15:48Speaker 4: is to be able to transfer that inventory just because
- 15:51Speaker 4: it might be setting on Stevens Auto in Summersville, that
- 15:58Speaker 4: customer might be a Nitro. And yes, you could see
- 16:00Speaker 4: it via a computer or via laptop or via your phone.
- 16:04Speaker 4: When they move that vehicle, then it's in your face.
- 16:07Speaker 4: I was always a big promoter and in my old staff,
- 16:13Speaker 4: you know, they still kid me about it. I'd call
- 16:15Speaker 4: it a lot party. You know, I might have thirty
- 16:18Speaker 4: five to forty cars, but any given time, we've got
- 16:21Speaker 4: your and move them completely around, rearrange them because you know,
- 16:25Speaker 4: when we're Oute twenty five, you're coming through Nitro and
- 16:28Speaker 4: how the sun sets, you're either in a hurry going
- 16:30Speaker 4: to work or hurry getting home. But if you move
- 16:34Speaker 4: that inventory, what was on the right hand side and
- 16:36Speaker 4: you moved to the left hand side might for all
- 16:39Speaker 4: of a sudden be seen. But that's the early days
- 16:43Speaker 4: of how I was taught was to move.
- 16:45Speaker 3: But there was something to be said for that, for
- 16:46Speaker 3: shaking it up. No matter what the business is, I mean,
- 16:49Speaker 3: even in the retail business, clothing, whatever, you can't leave
- 16:51Speaker 3: things sitting in the same spot every time, especially though
- 16:55Speaker 3: in the car business, where as you said, people are,
- 16:58Speaker 3: you know, five six days a week. They're going to
- 16:59Speaker 3: drive by that dealership. They need to see a different
- 17:02Speaker 3: vehicle out on And I know the Stevens folks were
- 17:04Speaker 3: one of the first ones that I saw that did
- 17:06Speaker 3: this at the downs the location in Danville in Boone County.
- 17:09Speaker 3: They were first one of the first ones when showing
- 17:11Speaker 3: off the jeeps, it would put it up on the
- 17:13Speaker 3: rocks and that was the you're talking about a heck
- 17:15Speaker 3: of a marketing employee, that was.
- 17:16Speaker 4: It's a head turner. And that's what it's I think
- 17:20Speaker 4: in the car with since they call it flash, you know,
- 17:23Speaker 4: just gets you to turn your head to see, you
- 17:25Speaker 4: know what you're trying to market. And the race will
- 17:29Speaker 4: never end of that. Everybody is always looking for the
- 17:31Speaker 4: new creative idea to bring people into your store. And
- 17:38Speaker 4: it does not matter what you're selling, it's it just
- 17:42Speaker 4: picked any kind of widgets, you know, any kind of commodity.
- 17:45Speaker 4: I went to for the first time in many years.
- 17:49Speaker 4: I just don't go to malls and the town Center
- 17:52Speaker 4: is all but going. So Kim enticed me last week
- 17:56Speaker 4: to go to the Huntington mall. We took the twelve
- 17:59Speaker 4: year old and we said, we're going to take you
- 18:01Speaker 4: Christmas shop in myles because it's hard to buy for
- 18:03Speaker 4: a twelve year old. Let's just give you money. Let's
- 18:05Speaker 4: go to the mall and let's walk. I hadn't been
- 18:08Speaker 4: in there in twenty years, and finally I just looked
- 18:11Speaker 4: around and I said, look, you all go on and
- 18:13Speaker 4: I'm going to set right here. I run into a
- 18:14Speaker 4: car person, so I had to talk to her for
- 18:17Speaker 4: a little bit. But if you've not been in the mall,
- 18:20Speaker 4: there was a lot of activity, a lot of activity,
- 18:23Speaker 4: much more than what I realized, especially being a person
- 18:28Speaker 4: I can easily go to Amazon, I can just easily
- 18:30Speaker 4: buy at home. So this is the first time I
- 18:33Speaker 4: ventured out into a large mall area. You know, I
- 18:36Speaker 4: guess maybe I've gotten older of whatever reason, but dere
- 18:40Speaker 4: was a lot, a lot of people moving.
- 18:42Speaker 3: People that think that shopping malls are dead. There is
- 18:46Speaker 3: always going to be a place because like in your situation, Larry,
- 18:49Speaker 3: people occasionally like to go and just look at things.
- 18:53Speaker 3: Shopping malls are not dead and there and I don't
- 18:55Speaker 3: want to get off on a tangent here talking about
- 18:57Speaker 3: the troubles of the Charleston Town Center. They've been well documented,
- 19:00Speaker 3: we talked about on my show several times. But the
- 19:03Speaker 3: Huntington Mall is thriving. Yes, you go down to Ashland,
- 19:07Speaker 3: you go, you know, to some other malls around and
- 19:09Speaker 3: now you know around the country, they're they're doing quite well.
- 19:13Speaker 3: They're actually adding to the Huntington Mall. So yeah, there's
- 19:15Speaker 3: a place for people shopping at home and with Amazon
- 19:17Speaker 3: and the various services and whatever. But malls are not
- 19:21Speaker 3: are are not dead, and neither is actually going will
- 19:24Speaker 3: transition this way before we take a break. Neither is
- 19:27Speaker 3: actually going to a car dealership because there are still
- 19:31Speaker 3: those people, albeit maybe some older folks, that still like
- 19:34Speaker 3: to go in and they like to have that one
- 19:36Speaker 3: on one relationship, uh, with their with their particular car salesman,
- 19:40Speaker 3: with the staff that's there, with the service department. And
- 19:42Speaker 3: that's one of the things that I have witnessed with
- 19:44Speaker 3: the folks at Steven's and you did with Larry Dawson's
- 19:47Speaker 3: auto sales too. Is you build those relationships, man.
- 19:50Speaker 4: Yeah, those relationships are very very important. Speaking of malls,
- 19:56Speaker 4: I saw someone posted this is before where you came
- 20:00Speaker 4: up to this area where the Kroger's is in Saint Albans.
- 20:04Speaker 4: What we know is that shopping center where the kmart
- 20:06Speaker 4: used to be that was built this mall. I don't
- 20:09Speaker 4: know if you knew that or not. And there was
- 20:12Speaker 4: a post of nineteen seventy five and I started my
- 20:15Speaker 4: career at Harvey Street, Ford of Vehicles, being inside that
- 20:19Speaker 4: mall in front of Henry's Men's shop, and there was
- 20:22Speaker 4: a shoe store and I had forgotten how nice that was. Now,
- 20:25Speaker 4: it was not a large mall, but and I do
- 20:28Speaker 4: not know the reason that Saint Albans Mall was changed
- 20:31Speaker 4: over to what it is now. But it was a big,
- 20:34Speaker 4: big thing in St. Alban's, West Virginia. And I believe
- 20:37Speaker 4: it was around seventy five when it opened up.
- 20:39Speaker 3: And people still, I mean, were the malls that are
- 20:41Speaker 3: still around. People still take vehicles in the malls you got.
- 20:44Speaker 3: It's one a lot since I've been to the Huntington mall.
- 20:46Speaker 3: But there's there's only vehicles.
- 20:47Speaker 4: There's a Nikra something something. It was very pretty car.
- 20:52Speaker 4: I walked over and I guess I got a little
- 20:53Speaker 4: sticker shocked.
- 20:55Speaker 3: But there was that mad when the car man it's
- 20:58Speaker 3: a little sticker shock.
- 20:59Speaker 4: I got kind of got a whole lot of shocked.
- 21:02Speaker 4: I didn't realize they made one that expensive, but they do.
- 21:04Speaker 4: You was talking about the cad like I believe this
- 21:07Speaker 4: aker was seventy ninety thousand. It was pretty vihckle. There
- 21:11Speaker 4: was side besides, there were.
- 21:14Speaker 3: Boat boats are a big thing too. A lot of
- 21:16Speaker 3: folks will put boats in them all.
- 21:18Speaker 4: What's the three wheeler Polaris that slingshots. There was a
- 21:21Speaker 4: couple of sling shots in there, and how many people
- 21:24Speaker 4: walk past that? I mean, like I said, I was
- 21:26Speaker 4: taken back.
- 21:28Speaker 3: I was at the.
- 21:28Speaker 4: Greenbrier last weekend. Now get this, last Friday, Friday week ago.
- 21:33Speaker 4: They checked in nine hundred people Friday. That's how busy
- 21:38Speaker 4: the Greenbriar is. We The arcade was full, the bowling
- 21:41Speaker 4: alleys full, the restaurants. There was wall to wall people
- 21:45Speaker 4: as you went down that shopping So people's out, they're moving.
- 21:48Speaker 3: They're out talking to Larry Dawson's of Steven Zonder group

- 24:34Speaker 3: get a fixed for in the next couple of hours.
- 24:35Speaker 3: I want to get your take on a story that
- 24:39Speaker 3: that broke I think first, I first saw it on
- 24:41Speaker 3: CNBC yesterday. There are talks of a merger between Honda
- 24:46Speaker 3: and Nissan. Yes, that really really surprised me. I didn't
- 24:51Speaker 3: get a chance really to delve into it. Perhaps you
- 24:53Speaker 3: have h Is there anything to this?
- 24:56Speaker 4: I believe there he is. I was actually reading in
- 24:58Speaker 4: a green room and I got the post yesterday evening.
- 25:02Speaker 4: US car guys. We gossip, you know, we send information.
- 25:06Speaker 4: About two weeks ago, I read an article where Nissan
- 25:09Speaker 4: the Exacts kind of had a board meeting and said
- 25:12Speaker 4: we're in trouble.
- 25:14Speaker 3: And it surprises me. It does in a way.
- 25:18Speaker 4: It does. But technology is driving so fast that it's
- 25:23Speaker 4: burning so much cash in these manufacturers trying to say ahead,
- 25:28Speaker 4: and if you make a mistaken out, this isn't political,
- 25:32Speaker 4: so please don't take this way. But there's been a
- 25:34Speaker 4: big push toward electric. Well, you just don't flip the
- 25:37Speaker 4: switch overnight to do that. You started three and four
- 25:41Speaker 4: and five years ago investing millions and millions of dollars
- 25:45Speaker 4: in technology, and looks like they're taking the foot off
- 25:49Speaker 4: the throttle a little bit on this on electric conversion.
- 25:53Speaker 4: And if you put all your money and technology into
- 25:58Speaker 4: that and the market and go that way, that looked
- 26:02Speaker 4: like it was headed that way. I think Ford experienced
- 26:04Speaker 4: this as well, that you've burned through a lot of cash,
- 26:09Speaker 4: a lot of cash. Well, probably Nissan did. And what
- 26:16Speaker 4: I read a couple of weeks ago, actually Chase called
- 26:19Speaker 4: me I think two weeks ago, and I brought that
- 26:22Speaker 4: subject up and we talked about that. Then there was
- 26:25Speaker 4: a little hint that maybe Honda was looking at him. Well,
- 26:30Speaker 4: it makes sense. You know, Honda is a very strong manufacturer.
- 26:35Speaker 4: They've been around a long time. That would give them
- 26:38Speaker 4: a platform maybe in the truck industry into you know,
- 26:43Speaker 4: because Nissan has the mid sized truck and.
- 26:47Speaker 3: When Honda's got the ridge line, but it's I don't
- 26:51Speaker 3: I mean, it's it's been around a long time, so obviously,
- 26:54Speaker 3: but they don't have anything else as far as I know,
- 26:56Speaker 3: as far as correct.
- 26:56Speaker 4: That is correct, So you could look at that. I
- 26:59Speaker 4: don't think you would see doule it being under one name.
- 27:05Speaker 4: I believe you will have Nissan and you will have Honda,
- 27:08Speaker 4: but there might be some co ownership. If you remember
- 27:11Speaker 4: about twenty five years ago, Mercedes in chryslerhood and Nissan
- 27:16Speaker 4: is hooked up with Poujio right now, that's and christ
- 27:20Speaker 4: jumped from when they went through the nine bankruptcy. They
- 27:25Speaker 4: got hooked up with the Fiat family. So there's more
- 27:28Speaker 4: of this going on than what one. You know, we
- 27:31Speaker 4: think of Nissan, we think of Nissan, we think it's
- 27:34Speaker 4: all on Nissan. Well, if you peel the layers back
- 27:37Speaker 4: just a couple of levels, there is a lot of
- 27:39Speaker 4: interactions between the two. You know, General Motors has been,
- 27:44Speaker 4: it has been in the past, hooked up with other
- 27:47Speaker 4: manufacturers and they badged them differently. Remember there was a
- 27:52Speaker 4: car called a Geo in the g Joe Storm Jo Jack, Yes,
- 27:57Speaker 4: and so things coming. But it would not surprise me
- 28:02Speaker 4: that if Nissan is weak by what I read, and
- 28:05Speaker 4: Honda is very as strong as strong can be, that
- 28:09Speaker 4: that probably might be a good marriage or a good
- 28:13Speaker 4: reunion between the two where they can share technology. And
- 28:16Speaker 4: I was also reading before I came on to show
- 28:20Speaker 4: that if this works, they'll bring Mitsubishi into the fold
- 28:24Speaker 4: as well, because mits Abishi probably is being propped up
- 28:28Speaker 4: by Nissan. Mists Abishi got very weak there a few
- 28:32Speaker 4: years ago. There was rumors that they probably would exit
- 28:35Speaker 4: the country right after Suzuki.
- 28:38Speaker 3: Did okay, and I remember that very well.
- 28:41Speaker 4: And Suzuki did not exit the country because of a
- 28:44Speaker 4: bad vehicle. This what was explained to me when Nissan
- 28:49Speaker 4: came Excuse me, when Suzuki came into the United States
- 28:53Speaker 4: and wanted to build a dealer a dealerships throughout the
- 28:59Speaker 4: United States, they probably signed up people or they allowed
- 29:05Speaker 4: franchise to be in buildings that they probably wished they
- 29:08Speaker 4: had of such as me. In other words, I could
- 29:12Speaker 4: have been become a Suzuki dealer one day. I think
- 29:15Speaker 4: I had a state of art independent building, But as
- 29:19Speaker 4: far as a franchise, I would have been on the
- 29:22Speaker 4: weekend of it. And when I say weekend, I didn't
- 29:24Speaker 4: have multiple bays. I had four bays. I had a
- 29:27Speaker 4: small showroom. And as Suzuki grasp and took off in
- 29:31Speaker 4: the United States, their agreements was with people that maybe
- 29:35Speaker 4: they wanted larger, better, bigger buildings, but they had an agreement. Well,
- 29:40Speaker 4: you can't go along and break these agreements. Now, Gentleal
- 29:43Speaker 4: Motors was able to break their agreement because they filed bankruptcy.
- 29:47Speaker 4: That's why ninety five percent of your chevallet stores all
- 29:50Speaker 4: looked the same. When you signed a new franchise agreement,
- 29:53Speaker 4: you agreed to monetize or build a new facility. Christ
- 29:58Speaker 4: Or did the same thing.
- 29:59Speaker 3: They filed bank Toyota is very big on that too.
- 30:03Speaker 4: Exactly. Well, Suzuki, you know, they were strong financially, but
- 30:07Speaker 4: they had these old agreements. So in order to get
- 30:11Speaker 4: out of the agreements, they if they got out one,
- 30:13Speaker 4: they had to get them out all of them. So
- 30:16Speaker 4: they elected to pull out of the United States that way.
- 30:20Speaker 3: Was that about ten years ago? Well, I think maybe
- 30:23Speaker 3: a little bit more, because I can tell you I
- 30:25Speaker 3: was doing a lot of advertising for Wally at that time,
- 30:28Speaker 3: and I had a deal with Thornhill worked out that
- 30:31Speaker 3: they they gave me a vehicle what much like Chase
- 30:34Speaker 3: is gonna do with the cattle I had. I had
- 30:37Speaker 3: a deal with them when I was working at another
- 30:40Speaker 3: radio station at the time. And they gave me a
- 30:43Speaker 3: I don't know if you remember this car, not a
- 30:45Speaker 3: Suzuki kazashah, yeah, which was put you in mind maybe
- 30:50Speaker 3: of a Chevy Cruise. You know, it's a very small
- 30:53Speaker 3: It was an olive drive for a nice little car.
- 30:55Speaker 3: And then and then they switched me from that into
- 30:57Speaker 3: the truck, which was called the Equator. And then around
- 31:00Speaker 3: that time I got a call from those folks saying, hey,
- 31:03Speaker 3: we need you to bring which was not uncommon because
- 31:06Speaker 3: people say, hey, somebody wants your truck. We got to
- 31:08Speaker 3: your vehicle, you got to bring it back, and I
- 31:10Speaker 3: would bring it back. But then they at that particular
- 31:13Speaker 3: dealership they made that transition to Mitsubishi, and they explained
- 31:16Speaker 3: to me, they said, you know, we're not Suzuki's completely
- 31:19Speaker 3: pulling out. My wife and I had a Suzuki Sidekick.
- 31:23Speaker 3: It was probably ninety four ninety five model because she
- 31:27Speaker 3: was in a job at the time that required that
- 31:29Speaker 3: she needed a full wheel drive because she had to
- 31:31Speaker 3: go to a lot of people's homes doing various things
- 31:37Speaker 3: compensation kind of stuff, a rehabilitation, I guess, and we
- 31:41Speaker 3: need to do an inexpensive four wheel drive, and they're
- 31:43Speaker 3: not they weren't as common back in nineteen ninety four
- 31:46Speaker 3: ninety five as what they are now, when pretty much
- 31:48Speaker 3: almost almost anything can be an all well drive these days.
- 31:51Speaker 3: And we bought a Suzuki Sidekick and it was a
- 31:55Speaker 3: good vehicle, except for we had an issue with spark
- 31:59Speaker 3: plug wire. And I don't know the first thing about
- 32:02Speaker 3: automobiles to be able. She knows more about cars, I
- 32:05Speaker 3: know what I like, she knows how to talk to
- 32:07Speaker 3: the mechanic wind of it. But we had that. We
- 32:11Speaker 3: had that vehicle back to the dealership several times replacing
- 32:14Speaker 3: spark plug wires, and eventually we ended up getting.
- 32:17Speaker 4: Rindt of it back from Mike Ratz.
- 32:19Speaker 2: No.
- 32:20Speaker 3: That came from Jeff Morris.
- 32:22Speaker 4: Okay, yes, we was Suzuki. When they pulled out of
- 32:25Speaker 4: the United States. He gave mits Abiti an opportunity to
- 32:29Speaker 4: come in, and they awarded franchises because the buildings was
- 32:33Speaker 4: already built. A lot of them, like Wally had a Suzuki.
- 32:39Speaker 4: The store that Chasing Richard owns in Princeton was originally
- 32:43Speaker 4: a Suzuki franchise. When Suzuki pulled out, Bill Pinelli, I
- 32:48Speaker 4: believe I'm pronouncing it right. He was awarded the Mitsubishi franchise.
- 32:53Speaker 4: So that's why in the you know, in the last
- 32:56Speaker 4: ten years there's been a lot of Mitsubishi stores popped up.
- 33:00Speaker 4: Well they were previously Suzuki dealers. I do not know,
- 33:04Speaker 4: and I drive by it about every day. If the
- 33:06Speaker 4: capital of mits Abishi, Joe Howell owns that in Jefferson.
- 33:10Speaker 4: For the longest time, the Suzuki, the big gas was
- 33:13Speaker 4: still there because they did warranty work. Do you know,
- 33:16Speaker 4: Charles Ellis it works for Wally very well? Well, Charles
- 33:19Speaker 4: and I have been friends forever.
- 33:21Speaker 3: Very few people in the car business later that I
- 33:22Speaker 3: don't know. Charles and I go way way back to
- 33:25Speaker 3: his more automotive group days.
- 33:27Speaker 4: Okay, Well, Charles and I was talking one day and
- 33:30Speaker 4: we were talking about Mince Abisian Suzuki, and he said,
- 33:32Speaker 4: Larry Suzuki was a very good car. Now he didn't
- 33:36Speaker 4: go so far to say it was better than Mitsubishi,
- 33:38Speaker 4: but if I had to pick his brain a little bit,
- 33:41Speaker 4: I think he was trying to say, hey, it was
- 33:43Speaker 4: a very very good car. I was trying to trade for.
- 33:46Speaker 4: One didn't know much about him, called Charles and we
- 33:48Speaker 4: got talking about the Suzuki Land, you know, and he's
- 33:51Speaker 4: and he really shared with me. He said, Larry, it's
- 33:54Speaker 4: a very very good vehicle.
- 33:56Speaker 3: I know in my.
- 33:57Speaker 4: Days of buying and selling previously young cars for many years,
- 34:02Speaker 4: Suzuki didn't come across the table often because there wasn't
- 34:06Speaker 4: a lot of them. But I do not remember any problems.
- 34:10Speaker 3: Well, the first vehicles that came out there were Suzukis
- 34:12Speaker 3: in America with a Samurai and it was totally stripped down.
- 34:16Speaker 3: I don't think they were available in satomatic transasion. It
- 34:18Speaker 3: was basically a high end side by saying I want
- 34:21Speaker 3: to get your opinion before we close on this story.
- 34:24Speaker 3: I heard on the news this morning. Remember, and this
- 34:27Speaker 3: has to do with seat belts. Now, were you and
- 34:28Speaker 3: I were both of them? To remember when most people
- 34:31Speaker 3: didn't wear seat belts. My first new car I ever
- 34:35Speaker 3: had was an eighteen eighty eight and a half Ford Escort.
- 34:38Speaker 3: They called it the half because they redesigned it in
- 34:40Speaker 3: eighty eight. It had automatic seat belts, which they don't
- 34:43Speaker 3: do those anymore, I don't think. But literally you'd get
- 34:45Speaker 3: in the car and the seat belt would just go
- 34:47Speaker 3: around you, at least the breast belt. Did you had
- 34:49Speaker 3: to put the light belt on. There's a story this
- 34:52Speaker 3: morning Bloomberg's reporting that in twenty twenty seven, automobile manufacturers
- 34:59Speaker 3: are going to be rec to have that annoying ding
- 35:02Speaker 3: in the rear, in the rear, in the rear side.
- 35:04Speaker 3: And I know a lot of people that do not
- 35:07Speaker 3: wear seat belts in the back, but you're either going
- 35:10Speaker 3: to wear them or you're going to figure out how
- 35:13Speaker 3: to disable that feature, because in twenty starting in twenty
- 35:16Speaker 3: twenty seven, it's going to be required that the annoying
- 35:20Speaker 3: dinging that when you get in a car, maybe you're
- 35:23Speaker 3: just picking I'm picking you up and we're going to
- 35:24Speaker 3: go for lunch just down the block or something. You know,
- 35:27Speaker 3: you may not put the seatbelt on, and it just
- 35:29Speaker 3: you know that it starts out slow and it gets
- 35:31Speaker 3: faster and faster. That's gonna happen in backseat started in
- 35:33Speaker 3: twenty twenty seven.
- 35:35Speaker 4: I learned something this past week. I was in a
- 35:38Speaker 4: buick Encore that one of my coworkers was driving, and
- 35:43Speaker 4: it has the loudest chime. It just and I said
- 35:47Speaker 4: to him, I said, there's got to be a way
- 35:49Speaker 4: to turn this down. So what do I do? I
- 35:52Speaker 4: google it. Sure enough, there's a way to turn those
- 35:54Speaker 4: chimes down. You go through the radio and there's a process.
- 36:00Speaker 4: I had to go to YouTube, and I guess my
- 36:03Speaker 4: reaction is a little slower. I had to watch it
- 36:05Speaker 4: a couple of times. Yeah, because YouTube they go so
- 36:08Speaker 4: fast and it was pushing buttons. So I thought, well,
- 36:11Speaker 4: we've got to slow this down a little bit. But yes,
- 36:14Speaker 4: by HAF one fifty. If there's been something setting in
- 36:18Speaker 4: the back, whether an object with weight or a person,
- 36:23Speaker 4: when you get out, the screen will flash and it
- 36:26Speaker 4: will show a small carriage like a baby carriage, letting
- 36:31Speaker 4: to check your back seat.
- 36:32Speaker 3: Check your back seat. And my vehicles do that as well.
- 36:34Speaker 3: But I can remember, you know, when I first when
- 36:37Speaker 3: I was a kid growing up in the seventies, like
- 36:39Speaker 3: nobody wore seating oh and it was I mean, people
- 36:41Speaker 3: would cut them out of vehicles. And then it became
- 36:44Speaker 3: you know, the click of or ticket, and then eventually
- 36:45Speaker 3: it became a low and now it's just second nature
- 36:47Speaker 3: for people. Whether you don't even think about it anymore,
- 36:49Speaker 3: but starting twenty twenty seven, you're going to think about it.
- 36:52Speaker 3: If you've got a passenger in the back.
- 36:53Speaker 4: Seat, well you know seat belts. I mean they do
- 36:55Speaker 4: save lives. I have and have had for the last
- 36:59Speaker 4: twenty years sites and they have came a long ways.
- 37:02Speaker 4: I mean they have came. The primitive side to side
- 37:05Speaker 4: I had many years ago, no pia steering really, no nothing.
- 37:09Speaker 4: You just got it and had a steering wheel and
- 37:11Speaker 4: put it and drive and decide to climb the hill
- 37:13Speaker 4: or not. Well, the latest one that I have bought,
- 37:16Speaker 4: I guess I've owned six seven of them. I put
- 37:19Speaker 4: harnesses in them. In other words, they crisscrossing, like like
- 37:23Speaker 4: getting into the airplane that you criss crossed. And that's
- 37:26Speaker 4: that's quite a safety design, is And who knows? So
- 37:30Speaker 4: maybe I shouldn't say that because of one of those
- 37:32Speaker 4: car manufacturers. Hear me say that we may have harnesses,
- 37:35Speaker 4: all right, because they all listen to this show. There
- 37:38Speaker 4: you go, where on.
- 37:39Speaker 3: That catillite for me?
- 37:39Speaker 4: William?
- 37:40Speaker 3: Oh, well, day Dawson. I appreciate you being here, man.
- 37:42Speaker 3: Have a happy, happy Christmas season, Merry Christmas and the
- 37:45Speaker 3: happy New Year. We'll talk to you in the new year.
