Speaker 1: Chapter nine, Powder and Arms. The Hispaniola lay some way out,
0:08
Speaker 1: and we went under the figureheads and around the sterns
0:10
Speaker 1: of many other ships, and their cables, sometimes grated beneath
0:14
Speaker 1: our keel, and sometimes swung above us. At last, however,
0:19
Speaker 1: we swung alongside and were met and saluted as we
0:22
Speaker 1: stepped aboard by the mate mister Arrow, a brown old
0:26
Speaker 1: sailor with ear rings in his ears and a squint.
0:29
Speaker 1: He and the squire were very thick and friendly, but
0:32
Speaker 1: I soon observed that things were not the same between
0:35
Speaker 1: mister Trelawney and the captain. This last was a sharp
0:40
Speaker 1: looking man who seemed angry with everything on board, and
0:44
Speaker 1: was soon to tell us why. For we had hardly
0:46
Speaker 1: got down into the cabin when a sailor followed us.
0:49
Speaker 1: Captain Smollett, sir, axing to speak with you, said he.
0:53
Speaker 1: I am always at the Captain's orders. Show him in,
0:57
Speaker 1: said the squire. The Captain, who was close behind his messenger,
1:02
Speaker 1: entered at once and shut the door behind him. Well,
1:05
Speaker 1: Captain Smollett, what have you to say all? Well, I
1:09
Speaker 1: hope all ship shape and seaworthy. Well, sir, said the captain,
1:14
Speaker 1: Better speak plain, I believe at the risk of a fence.
1:19
Speaker 1: I don't like this cruise. I don't like the men,
1:22
Speaker 1: and I don't like my officer. That's short and sweet. Perhaps, sir,
1:28
Speaker 1: you don't like the ship, inquired the squire, very angry
1:32
Speaker 1: as I could see. I can't speak to that, sir,
1:35
Speaker 1: not having seen her tried, said the captain. She seems
1:39
Speaker 1: a clever craft more I can't say. Possibly, sir, you
1:44
Speaker 1: may not like your employer either, said the squire. But
1:48
Speaker 1: here doctor Livesey cut in, stay a bit, said he
1:53
Speaker 1: stay a bit. No use of such questions as that,
1:56
Speaker 1: but to produce ill feeling. The Captain has said too
2:01
Speaker 1: much or he has said too little, and I am
2:04
Speaker 1: bound to say that I require an explanation of his words.
2:09
Speaker 1: You don't you say like this cruise? Now why I
2:13
Speaker 1: was engaged, sir, on what we call sealed orders to
2:18
Speaker 1: sail this ship for that gentleman where he should bid me,
2:23
Speaker 1: said the captain. So far, so good, But now I
2:28
Speaker 1: find that every man before the mast knows more than
2:32
Speaker 1: I do. I don't call that fear, now, do you now,
2:37
Speaker 1: said Doctor Livesey. I don't, next, said the Captain. I
2:43
Speaker 1: learn that we are going after treasure. Hear it from
2:47
Speaker 1: my own hands, mind you, now, treasure is ticklish work.
2:53
Speaker 1: I don't like treasure voyages on any account, and I
2:56
Speaker 1: don't like them above all when they are secret, and
3:00
Speaker 1: when begging your pardon, mister Trelawney, the secret has been
3:04
Speaker 1: told to the parrot. Silver's parrot, asked the squire. It's
3:10
Speaker 1: a way of speaking, said the captain, blabed. I mean,
3:15
Speaker 1: it's my belief. Neither of you, gentlemen, know what you
3:19
Speaker 1: are about. But I'll tell you my way of it.
3:22
Speaker 1: Life or death and a close run. That is all clear,
3:27
Speaker 1: And I dare say true enough, replied doctor Livesey. We
3:31
Speaker 1: take the risk, but we are not so ignorant as
3:34
Speaker 1: you believe us. Next, you say you don't like the crew.
3:39
Speaker 1: Are they not good seamen? I don't like them, sir,
3:43
Speaker 1: returned Captain Smollett. And I think I should have had
3:47
Speaker 1: the choosing of my own hands. If you go to that,
3:51
Speaker 1: perhaps you should, replied the doctor. My friend should perhaps
3:56
Speaker 1: have taken you along with him. But the slight, if
3:59
Speaker 1: there be one, was unintentional. And you don't like mister Arrow,
4:04
Speaker 1: I don't, sir, I believe he's a good seaman. But
4:09
Speaker 1: he's too free with the crew to be a good officer.
4:12
Speaker 1: A mate should keep himself to himself, shouldn't drink with
4:16
Speaker 1: the men before the mast. Do you mean he drinks,
4:21
Speaker 1: cried the squire. No, sir, replied the captain, only that
4:26
Speaker 1: he's too familiar. Well, now and the short of the
4:30
Speaker 1: long of it, captain asked the doctor, tell us what
4:34
Speaker 1: you want? Well, gentlemen, are you determined to go on
4:39
Speaker 1: this cruise like iron? Answered the squire. Very good, said
4:45
Speaker 1: the captain. Then, as you've heard me very patiently saying
4:50
Speaker 1: things that I could not prove, hear me a few
4:53
Speaker 1: words more. They are putting the powder and arms in
4:57
Speaker 1: the forehold. Now you have a good place under the cabin.
5:02
Speaker 1: Why not put them there? First point? Then, you are
5:08
Speaker 1: bringing four of your own people with you, and they
5:12
Speaker 1: tell me some of them are to be berthed forward,
5:16
Speaker 1: why not give them the berths here besides the cabin?
5:20
Speaker 1: Second point? Any more, asked mister Trelawney. One more, said
5:27
Speaker 1: the Captain. There's been too much a blabbing already, far
5:32
Speaker 1: too much, agreed the doctor. I'll tell you what I
5:36
Speaker 1: have heard myself, continued Captain Smollett. That you have a
5:40
Speaker 1: map of an island. That there's crosses on the map
5:44
Speaker 1: to show where treasure is, and that the island lies.
5:49
Speaker 1: And then he named the latitude and longitude exactly. I
5:53
Speaker 1: never told that, cried the Squire. To a soul the
5:57
Speaker 1: hands know it, Sir, returned the Captain. Livesey. That must
6:04
Speaker 1: have been your Hawkins, cried the squire. It doesn't much
6:08
Speaker 1: matter who it was, replied the doctor. And I could
6:12
Speaker 1: see that neither he nor the Captain paid much regard
6:15
Speaker 1: to mister Trelawney's protestations. Neither did I to be sure
6:20
Speaker 1: he was so loose a talker. Yet in this case
6:23
Speaker 1: I believe he was really right, and that nobody had
6:26
Speaker 1: told the situation of the island. Well, gentlemen, continued the Captain.
6:32
Speaker 1: I don't know who has this map, but I make
6:35
Speaker 1: it a point it shall be kept secret, even from
6:38
Speaker 1: me and mister Arrow. Otherwise I would ask you to
6:43
Speaker 1: let me resign. I see, said the doctor. You wish
6:47
Speaker 1: us to keep this matter dark, and to make a
6:50
Speaker 1: garrison of the stern part of the ship, manned with
6:54
Speaker 1: my friend's own people, and provided with all the arms
6:58
Speaker 1: and powder on board. In other words, you'll fear a mutiny, Sir,
7:04
Speaker 1: said Captain Smollett, with no intention to take offence. I
7:09
Speaker 1: deny your right to put words into my mouth. No, Captain, Sir,
7:14
Speaker 1: would be justified in going to sea at all if
7:18
Speaker 1: he had ground enough to say that. As for mister Arrow,
7:23
Speaker 1: I believe him thoroughly honest. Some of the men are
7:27
Speaker 1: the same, or maybe for what I know. But I
7:31
Speaker 1: am responsible for the ship's safety and the life of
7:36
Speaker 1: every man jack aboard of her. I see things going
7:41
Speaker 1: as I think not quite right, and I ask you
7:45
Speaker 1: to take certain precautions, or let me resign my birth.
7:50
Speaker 1: And that's all, Captain Smollett began the doctor with a smile.
7:56
Speaker 1: Did you ever hear the feeble of the mountain and
7:59
Speaker 1: the mouse? You'll excuse me, I dare say, but you'll
8:02
Speaker 1: remind me of that fable when you came in here.
8:06
Speaker 1: I'll stake my wig. You meant more than this, doctor,
8:10
Speaker 1: said the Captain. You are smart. When I came in here,
8:15
Speaker 1: I meant to get discharged. I had no thought that
8:19
Speaker 1: mister Trelawney would hear a word. No more, I would
8:25
Speaker 1: cried the Squire. Had Livesey not been here, I should
8:28
Speaker 1: have seen you to the deuce. As it is I
8:31
Speaker 1: have heard you. I will do as you desire, but
8:35
Speaker 1: I think the worst of you. That's as you please, sir,
8:39
Speaker 1: said the captain. You'll find I do my duty, and
8:44
Speaker 1: with that he took his leave. Trelawny, said the doctor.
8:48
Speaker 1: Contrary to all my notions, I believe you have managed
8:53
Speaker 1: to get two honest men on board with you, that
8:56
Speaker 1: man and John Silver Silver if you like, cried the squire.
9:02
Speaker 1: But as for that intolerable humbug, I declare I think
9:06
Speaker 1: his conduct unmanly, unsailorly and downright un English. Well, said
9:13
Speaker 1: the doctor. We shall see when we came on deck.
9:17
Speaker 1: The men had begun all ready to take out the
9:19
Speaker 1: arms and powder yohoeing at their work, while the captain
9:23
Speaker 1: and mister Arrow stood by superintending. The new arrangement was
9:28
Speaker 1: quite to my liking. The whole schooner had been overhauled.
9:32
Speaker 1: Six berths had been made astern out of what had
9:34
Speaker 1: been the after part of the main hold, and this
9:37
Speaker 1: set of cabins was only joined to the galley and
9:40
Speaker 1: forecastle by a sparred passage on the port side. It
9:43
Speaker 1: had been originally meant that the captain mister Arrow Hunter Joyce,
9:48
Speaker 1: the doctor and the Squire were to occupy these six berths.
9:51
Speaker 1: Now Red Ruth and I were to get two of them,
9:54
Speaker 1: and mister Arrow and the Captain were to sleep on
9:57
Speaker 1: deck in the companion, which had been in love on
10:00
Speaker 1: either side till you might almost have called it a roundhouse.
10:04
Speaker 1: Very low it was, still, of course, but there was
10:07
Speaker 1: room to swing to hammocks, and even the mate seemed
10:10
Speaker 1: pleased with the arrangement. Even he perhaps had been doubtful
10:14
Speaker 1: as to the crew, but that is only guess, for
10:17
Speaker 1: as you shall hear, we had not long the benefit
10:21
Speaker 1: of his opinion. We were all hard at work changing
10:24
Speaker 1: the powder and the berths when the last man or two,
10:27
Speaker 1: and Long John along with them, came off in a
10:31
Speaker 1: shore boat. The cook came up the side like a
10:34
Speaker 1: monkey for cleverness, and as soon as he saw what
10:37
Speaker 1: was doing so home mates said he, what's this? We're
10:42
Speaker 1: a change in the powder? Jack answers one. Why by
10:46
Speaker 1: the powers, cried Long John. If we do, we'll miss
10:50
Speaker 1: the mourning tide. My orders, said the Captain. Shortly you
10:56
Speaker 1: may go below. My manner hands will want supper. Aye aye, sir,
11:02
Speaker 1: answered the cook, and touching his forelock. He disappeared at
11:05
Speaker 1: once in the direction of his galley. That's a good man,
11:09
Speaker 1: a captain, said the doctor. Very likely, Sir, replied Captain Smollett.
11:15
Speaker 1: Easy with that men, easy. He ran on to the
11:20
Speaker 1: fellows who were shifting the powder, and then, suddenly observing
11:23
Speaker 1: me examining the swivel, we carried amidships a long brass. Nine.
11:27
Speaker 1: Hear you, ship's boy, he cried out, Are that off
11:32
Speaker 1: with you to the cook and get some work. And
11:36
Speaker 1: then as I was hurrying off, I heard him say,
11:38
Speaker 1: quite loudly to the doctor, I'll have no favorites on
11:42
Speaker 1: my ship, I assure you. I was quite of the
11:45
Speaker 1: Squire's way of thinking, and hated the captain deeply. End
11:50
Speaker 1: of Chapter nine, Chapter ten the voyage. All that night
11:56
Speaker 1: we were in a great bustle, getting things stowed in
11:58
Speaker 1: their place, and boatfuls of the Squire's friends, mister Blandly
12:02
Speaker 1: and the like, coming off to wish him a good
12:05
Speaker 1: voyage and a safe return. We never had a night
12:08
Speaker 1: at the admiral Benbow when I had half the work
12:11
Speaker 1: and I was dog tired. When a little before dawn
12:14
Speaker 1: the bowsn sounded his pipe, and the crew began to
12:17
Speaker 1: man the capstan bars. I might have been twice as weary,
12:22
Speaker 1: yet I would not have left the deck, or was
12:25
Speaker 1: so new and interesting to me the brief commands, the
12:29
Speaker 1: shrill notes of the whistle, the men bustling to their
12:32
Speaker 1: places in the glimmer of the ship's lanterns now, barbecue,
12:36
Speaker 1: tip us, a stave, cried one voice, the old one
12:41
Speaker 1: cried another. Aye aye, mates, said long John, who was
12:45
Speaker 1: standing by with his crutch under his arm, and at
12:48
Speaker 1: once broke out in the air and words I knew
12:51
Speaker 1: so well. Fifteen men on a dead man's chest. And
12:56
Speaker 1: then the whole crew bore chorus, yoho ho, and a
13:01
Speaker 1: bottle of rum, and at the third hoe drove the
13:06
Speaker 1: bars before them with a will. Even at that exciting moment,
13:10
Speaker 1: it carried me back to the old admiral benbow in
13:13
Speaker 1: a second, and I seemed to hear the voice of
13:15
Speaker 1: the captain piping in the chorus. But soon the anchor
13:19
Speaker 1: was short up. Soon it was hanging, dripping at the bows.
13:22
Speaker 1: Soon the sails began to draw, and the land and
13:25
Speaker 1: shipping to flit by on either side. And before I
13:28
Speaker 1: could lie down to snatch an hour of slumber, the
13:31
Speaker 1: Hispaniola began her voyage to the Isle of Treasure. I
13:35
Speaker 1: am not going to relate the voyage in detail. It
13:39
Speaker 1: was fairly prosperous. The ship proved to be a good ship,
13:43
Speaker 1: and the crew were capable seamen, and the captain thoroughly
13:46
Speaker 1: understood his business. But before we came the length of
13:49
Speaker 1: Treasure Island, two or three things had happened which require
13:52
Speaker 1: to be known. Mister Arrow, first of all, turned out
13:56
Speaker 1: even worse than the captain had feared. He had no
13:59
Speaker 1: command among the men, and people did what they pleased
14:02
Speaker 1: with him. But that was by no means the worst
14:05
Speaker 1: of it. For after a day or two at sea,
14:07
Speaker 1: he began to appear on deck with hazy eye, red cheeks,
14:11
Speaker 1: stuttering tongue, and other marks of drunkenness. Time after time
14:16
Speaker 1: he was ordered below in disgrace. Sometimes he fell and
14:20
Speaker 1: cut himself. Sometimes he lay all day long in his
14:23
Speaker 1: little bunk at one side of the companion. Sometimes for
14:27
Speaker 1: a day or two he would be almost sober and
14:29
Speaker 1: attend to his work at least passably. In the meantime,
14:34
Speaker 1: we could never make out where he got the drink.
14:37
Speaker 1: That was the ship's mystery. Watch him as we pleased,
14:40
Speaker 1: we could do nothing to solve it, And when we
14:43
Speaker 1: asked him to his face, he would only laugh if
14:46
Speaker 1: he were drunk, and if he were sober, deny solemnly
14:49
Speaker 1: that he ever tasted anything but water. He was not
14:53
Speaker 1: only useless as an officer, and a bad influence among
14:56
Speaker 1: the men, but it was plain that at this rate
14:59
Speaker 1: he must soon kill himself outright. So nobody was much
15:02
Speaker 1: surprised nor very sorry when one dark night, with a
15:06
Speaker 1: head sea, he disappeared entirely and was seen no more
15:11
Speaker 1: Overbold said the captain, Well, gentlemen, that saves the trouble
15:16
Speaker 1: of putting him in irons. And there we were without
15:20
Speaker 1: a mate, and it was necessary, of course to advance
15:23
Speaker 1: one of the men the bo'sun job Anderson was the
15:27
Speaker 1: likeliest man aboard, and though he kept his old title,
15:30
Speaker 1: he served in a way as mate. Mister Trelawney had
15:34
Speaker 1: followed the sea, and his knowledge made him very useful,
15:37
Speaker 1: for often he took a watch himself in easy weather,
15:40
Speaker 1: and the Coxs and israel Hands was a careful, wily,
15:44
Speaker 1: old experienced seaman who could be trusted at a pinch
15:48
Speaker 1: with almost anything. He was a great confidante of Long
15:51
Speaker 1: John Silver, And so the mention of his name leads
15:55
Speaker 1: me on to speak of our ship's cook, Barbecue, as
15:58
Speaker 1: the men called him. Aboard ship, he carried his crutch
16:02
Speaker 1: by a lanyard around his neck to have both hands
16:05
Speaker 1: as free as possible. It was something to see him
16:08
Speaker 1: wedge the foot of the crutch against the bulkhead and
16:11
Speaker 1: propped against it, yielding to every movement of the ship,
16:15
Speaker 1: get on with his cooking like some one safe ashore.
16:18
Speaker 1: Still more strange was it to see him, in the
16:20
Speaker 1: heaviest of weather, crossed the deck. He had a line
16:23
Speaker 1: or two rigged up to help him across the widest spaces,
16:27
Speaker 1: long John's ear rings, they were called, and he would
16:30
Speaker 1: hand himself from one place to another, now using the crutch,
16:34
Speaker 1: now trailing it alongside by the lanyard, as quickly as
16:37
Speaker 1: another man could walk. Yet some of the men who
16:40
Speaker 1: had sailed with him before expressed their pity to see
16:43
Speaker 1: him so reduced. He's no common man, Barbecue, said the
16:48
Speaker 1: coxswain to me. He had a good schooling in his
16:51
Speaker 1: young days, and can speak like a book when he
16:54
Speaker 1: so minded and brave. A lion's nothin longside of Long John.
17:00
Speaker 1: I've seen him grapple four and knock their heads together
17:03
Speaker 1: him unarmed. All the crew respected and even obeyed him.
17:08
Speaker 1: He had a way of talking to each and doing
17:11
Speaker 1: everybody some particular service. To me. He was unweariedly kind,
17:16
Speaker 1: and always glad to see me in the galley, which
17:18
Speaker 1: he kept as clean as a new pin, the dishes
17:21
Speaker 1: hanging up burnished, and his parrot in a cage in
17:24
Speaker 1: the corner. Come away, young Hawkins, he would say, Come
17:29
Speaker 1: and have a yarn with John. Nobody more welcome than yourself,
17:34
Speaker 1: my son. Sit you down and hear the news. Here's
17:39
Speaker 1: cap'n Flint. I cause my parrot cap'n Flint, after the
17:44
Speaker 1: famous buccaneer, here's cap'n Flint, predicting success to our voyage,
17:50
Speaker 1: wasn't your cap'n? And the parrot would say, with great rapidity,
17:54
Speaker 1: pieces of eight, pieces of eight, pieces of eight, till
17:57
Speaker 1: you wondered that it was not out of breath, till
18:00
Speaker 1: John threw his handkerchief over the cage. Now that bird,
18:05
Speaker 1: he would say, is maybe two hundred years old, Hawkins.
18:10
Speaker 1: They live forever mostly, and if anybody see more wickedness,
18:15
Speaker 1: it must be the devil himself. She's sailed with England,
18:19
Speaker 1: the great cop in England the Pirate. She's been at Madagascar,
18:24
Speaker 1: and at Malabar, and Suriname, and Providence and Port of Bellow.
18:30
Speaker 1: She was at the fishing up of the wrecked plate ships.
18:34
Speaker 1: It's there she learned pieces of eight and Little Wonder
18:38
Speaker 1: three hundred and fifty thousand off of markins. She was
18:42
Speaker 1: at the boarding of the Voice roy of the Indies
18:45
Speaker 1: out of Goa. She was, And to look at her
18:48
Speaker 1: you would think she was a babby. But you smelt powder,
18:52
Speaker 1: didn't you, Captain stand by to go about. The parrot
18:56
Speaker 1: would scream, Ah, she's antsome craft she is, The cook
19:01
Speaker 1: would say, and give her sugar from his pocket, And
19:04
Speaker 1: then the bird would peck at the bars and swear
19:07
Speaker 1: straight on, passing belief for wickedness. There, John would add,
19:13
Speaker 1: you can't pitch a nut be mucked. Lad, here's the
19:17
Speaker 1: poor old, innocent bird of mine, swear in blue fire,
19:21
Speaker 1: and none the wiser you made. Later that she would
19:24
Speaker 1: swear the same in a manner a speaking before the chaplain,
19:28
Speaker 1: and John would touch his forelock with a solemn way
19:31
Speaker 1: he had that made me think he was the best
19:34
Speaker 1: of men. In the meantime, the Squire and Captain Smollett
19:37
Speaker 1: were still on pretty distant terms with one another. The
19:41
Speaker 1: Squire made no bones about the matter. He despised the captain.
19:45
Speaker 1: The captain, on his part, never spoke but when he
19:48
Speaker 1: was spoken to, and then sharp and short and dry,
19:52
Speaker 1: and not a word wasted. He owned, when driven into
19:55
Speaker 1: a corner, that he seemed to have been wrong about
19:57
Speaker 1: the crew, that some of them were as brick as
20:00
Speaker 1: he wanted to see, and all had behaved fairly well.
20:04
Speaker 1: As for the ship, he had taken a downright fancy
20:06
Speaker 1: to her. She'll lie a point nearer the wind than
20:10
Speaker 1: a man, as the right to expect of his own
20:13
Speaker 1: married wife, sir. But he would add, all I say
20:18
Speaker 1: is we're not home again, and I don't like the cruise.
20:23
Speaker 1: The Squire at this would turn away and march up
20:26
Speaker 1: and down the deck, chin in air. A trifle more
20:29
Speaker 1: of that man, he would say, and I should explode.
20:34
Speaker 1: We had some heavy weather, which only proved the qualities
20:37
Speaker 1: of the Hispaniola. Every man on board seemed well content,
20:41
Speaker 1: and he must have been hard to please if they
20:44
Speaker 1: had been otherwise. For it is my belief that there
20:47
Speaker 1: was never a ship's company so spoiled since Noah put
20:50
Speaker 1: to sea, double grog was going at the least excuse
20:55
Speaker 1: there was duff on odd days, as for instance, if
20:58
Speaker 1: the squire heard it was any man's birthday, and all
21:01
Speaker 1: was a barrel of apples standing broached in the waist
21:04
Speaker 1: for anyone to help himself that had a fancy never
21:08
Speaker 1: knew good to come of it. Yet the captain said
21:11
Speaker 1: to doctor livesey, spoil forecas or hands make devils. That's
21:16
Speaker 1: my belief. But good did come of the apple barrel,
21:20
Speaker 1: as you shall hear. For if it had not been
21:23
Speaker 1: for that, we should have had no note of warning,
21:26
Speaker 1: and might all have perished by the hand of treachery.
21:30
Speaker 1: This is how it came about. We had run up
21:34
Speaker 1: the trades to get wind of the island we were after.
21:37
Speaker 1: I am not allowed to be more plain, And now
21:40
Speaker 1: we were running down for it, with a bright lookout
21:43
Speaker 1: day and night. It was about the last day of
21:45
Speaker 1: her outward voyage. By the last computation, some time that night,
21:50
Speaker 1: or latest before noon of the morrow, we should sight
21:53
Speaker 1: the treasure island. We were heading southwest and had a
21:57
Speaker 1: steady breeze obleam and a quiet see the Hispaniola rolled steadily,
22:03
Speaker 1: dipping her bowsprit now and then with a whiff of spray.
22:07
Speaker 1: All was drawing a low and aloft. Everyone was in
22:11
Speaker 1: the bravest spirits because we were now so near an
22:13
Speaker 1: end of the first part of our adventure. Now just
22:17
Speaker 1: after sundown, when all my work was over and I
22:20
Speaker 1: was on my way to my berth, it occurred to
22:22
Speaker 1: me that I should like an apple. I ran on deck.
22:26
Speaker 1: The watch was all forehead, looking out for the island.
22:30
Speaker 1: The man at the helm was watching the luff of
22:32
Speaker 1: the sail and whistling away gently to himself, and that
22:36
Speaker 1: was the only sound, excepting the swish of the sea
22:38
Speaker 1: against the boughs and around the sides of the ship.
22:42
Speaker 1: In I got bodily into the apple barrel and found
22:45
Speaker 1: there was scarce an apple left. But sitting down there
22:48
Speaker 1: in the dark, what with the sound of the waters
22:50
Speaker 1: and the rocking movement of the ship, I had either
22:53
Speaker 1: fallen asleep or was on the point of doing so,
22:56
Speaker 1: when a heavy man sat down with rather a clash
22:59
Speaker 1: close by. The barrel shook as he leaned his shoulders
23:03
Speaker 1: against it, and I was just about to jump up
23:05
Speaker 1: when the man began to speak. It was Silver's voice,
23:09
Speaker 1: And before I had heard a dozen words, I would
23:12
Speaker 1: not have shown myself for all the world, but lay there,
23:15
Speaker 1: trembling and listening, in the extreme of fear and curiosity.
23:20
Speaker 1: For from these dozen words I understood that the lives
23:24
Speaker 1: of all the honest men aboard depended upon me alone.
23:31
Speaker 1: End of Chapter ten.
